Solve : Will upgrading to windows 7 fix my windows vista registry problems??

Answer»

Most of my registry is either corrupted, or gone. I am posting this on a different computer, because I cannot get mine to boot up. Occasionally I can get it to the desktop, but then I get an error message saying "windows cannot find C:\Windows\System32\mrt.exe". I tried going to Run and then typed "msconfig", but got a message saying "windows cannot find C:\Windows\System32\msconfig.exe". Then it froze again.

I have just managed to boot it in safe mode, but it took about 10 minutes to load.

I don't have a backup disk, and I cannot get system restore to work.

Is there anywhere to download a copy of the registry files, burn them to a disk with this PC, and then upload them onto my laptop? Would upgrading the OS replace the registry for me? Is it safe to upgrade an OS onto a system with a broken registry?

This has been a nightmare, it hasn't been working for weeks. I really need help.

Thanks.Installing 7 will wipe out everything...not exactly a clean solution...

A) Vista Business 32 bit
B) I had some malware which I couldn't get rid of, which was constantly asking for admin permission. So I booted safe mode and then used the Stubborn Program Remover feature of Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to go into the registry remove the file (I believe it was labeled as "consent.exe" or something. I assumed allowing admin permission to a file called "consent" would be a poor choice). After that, the program stopped popping up, but the computer was constantly freezing.
C) I have a bunch of documents from uni that would be useful to KEEP, and some movies and tv shows that I wouldn't mind saving (as well as MICROSOFT office, which I need to do my work). So yeah, wiping the hard-drive to sort out the problem wouldn't be ideal. But if I run out of options, I don't mind upgrading the OS to sort it out. Better to have a working laptop than no laptop.

I have Sophos Anti-Virus, Ad-aware, and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware.OK...
Read This for info on saving the data you do not want to use...
In the meantime tou should beg or borrow both a Vista64bit and Office CD from whoever you can.
The system and all it's contents can be saved but only with those CD's.

I would still follow the above link in the meantime and backup your critical data.Quote from: alex.marshall0 on November 16, 2011, 10:04:00 AM

"consent.exe" is a critical COMPONENT of windows. it wasn't asking for permission, by the way. consent.exe is the surrogate process used by UAC for process elevation. You could try running sfc /scannow in safe mode (or normal mode, if it will allow it). Try to log in as administrator so it won't try to launch consent.exe for elevation. That's probably when it freezes.

Obviously the first step would be to restore the file. This ideally would be done using the windows CDs. however, to my understanding many critical files are backed up on the local system; an sfc /scannow command ought to fix the immediate problem if that is the case. on my Vista Virtual Machine, I found consent.exe in System32 (the one you deleted) as well as in "C:\Windows\winsxs\x86_microsoft-windows-lua_31bf3856ad364e35_6.0.6000.16386_none_a4139b365fe05aa4", which using sfc would "restore" if consent.exe was missing from system32.

In the future you may want to be more deliberate before you start deleting RANDOM files in the windows folder. Especially when the system you are fiddling with has critical data that hasn't been backed up...

No it won't. Windows 7 can be upgraded from Windows Vista, leaving installed programs and documents intact. Of course the installation instructions highly recommend backing up data, but then again that would have been a good idea before fiddling about with the advanced features of MBAM, too.

Solve : .lnk default set program?

Answer»

Hello there, i am here to seek help from you all, as i failed in fixing the problem myself. My girlfriend accidently put the default set program for .lnk files to google chrome, and most of her files are shortcuts (i sent her a shortcut to an IMAGE instead of the image with an accident, so she opened it in windows photo view or w.e it's called). Now she cannot use any of the programs due to this problem. She has win7, and a dell inspiron 1564 which requires everything to be located in the D:/ drive. This lead to her transferring all files in there, and leaving shortcuts all over the C:/ drive.

After she had set it to Windows Photo viewer, i set it to be opened in Google Chrome.

Here's a screenshot of the problem,

Any ideas on what i can do to set it back to the original programs? Go to Control Panel>Folder Options>File Types, and delete the .ink extension.
Or, if Delete is grayed out, click Restore (to set it back to the defaults), then Delete. Thanks for that. But i can't seem to find "Folder options" anywhere in the control panel..
----------------------------------
nvm, found it. But the file types aren't in it..

The above is how I do it on Windows XP. I messed up my .LNK shortcut extension just like yours and set it to open with google Chrome.
I deleted the wrong entry, and then created a new .LNK extension with the object "Shortcut."

I noticed you are using Windows 7, in which case there is no default menu for file TYPE management. There is no need to worry, though:
http://www.annoyances.org/exec/show/article02-500
http://www.thewindowsclub.com/how-to-dissociate-file-types-in-windows-7-and-vista
You can use EITHER of the third-party tools to delete and reassociate the .lnk file extension. Its LNK, not INK, as I just found out. Sorry for the above typo...

Normally the Mic and speakers are not on at the same time.

Doesn't the issue of feedback arise?

It's an HP/Compaq (during hp's acquisition of compaq) and I want the microphone to send its input to the speakers. Is there a PIECE of software that can do that? That works?Do you mean you wanna test your built-in microphone on ONBOARD speakers if its working?

It works on my computer perfectly.I'm also able to do it in the manner Transfusion DESCRIBES. My software panels look different from his but the general procedure for enabling the feature is the same.

Solve : Vista won't open my user manual CD but XP will??

Answer»

I bought a Fluke 77 IV MULTIMETER today to use at my job. A CD with USER manual ect. was included in the box that I inserted into my PC running Vista Business x64. It would not OPEN and the error messages are attached.
Adobe reader is up to date according to Secunia.
This CD opens fine on my XP machine.
What do I need to change on my Vista business x64 machine in order to open this document?
As always, thanks for the HELP!
Mike

[regaining space - attachment deleted by admin]Have you checked at the fluke website to see if they have a newer manual available for download? It apears from looking at your screenshots that this is not just a pdf, but a utility with a manual viewer. I'd try to track down the pdf through the manufacturer for the manual. Otherwise contact Fluke support and check with them to see if they know of any issues with their software and 64-bit OS. Maybe they have a 64-bit version available for download as a zip etc.

This link off the link you provided has lots of pdf's available: http://www.myflukestore.com/p1355/fluke_77-iv.php?tab=documents#tab_headerYes nixie, I found the download from Fluke and meant to mark this THREAD as solved but I forgot to do so.
Anyway, the download didn't really have much info I didn't already know but I did want to read it and have a copy on file.
So thanks for your help and now I'll now mark this thread as solved.

Thanks again,
Mike

Solve : JavaScript does not work on Windows 7 Machines?

Answer»

Status:

I have reregistered jscript and vbscript (successfully).

I ran MCPR.exe McAfee removel tool again. I scanned its log. It removed some McAfee modules and some registry links this time too. I find that puzzling. If fixed some registry links also. (Why are they still there?)

Net result -- JavaScript is still failing.

I thought about an infection. Because of the timing, I wonder if it wasnot somehing that was controlled by McAfee / Norton (on the laptop) until that brief moment when they were uninstalled.

If I can find a root kit checker, I will try that also. I hope I do not need JavaScript to navigate the Web Pages.

I will try your Chrome and Firefox links in the morning -- no, later this morning -- when I am fresher.

I think I am going to sleep on this. If you come up with any more ideas, I will try them tomorrow also.

Thanks for your continuing help.

Apparently others have had this issue.

How to Enable JavaScript in Windows 7
By Craig Witt, eHow Contributor
updated March 31, 2011
JavaScript is a browser-based scripting language used by millions of websites. It allows programmers to create Web pages capable of delivering dynamic functionality and in-page refreshing that can be interpreted by any modern browser. Because JavaScript has often been used to deploy pop-ups and other distracting page elements, some users opt to disable the technology. Fortunately, whether you use Internet Explorer, Firefox, Opera or Safari on your Windows 7 computer, you can re-enable JavaScript with only a few clicks. ...
http://www.ehow.com/how_8132036_enable-javascript-windows-7.html
I rarely suggest this but at this point you should consider a wipe and a clean install...to Geek:
That is the first thng I checked -- on both machines. Even though, if that had been true, I would have expected different behaviour on both machines.

to patio:
It may come to that. I would like to identify the problem first to ensure it does not happen again. Also I need to inventory and make sure I have all of my software keys saved so I can avoid a massive expense.

--------

I still have the test using Firefox and Chrome to try. I have had an interesting two days -- totally unrelated to these computer issues.
Quote
Then CHECK if all Java are properly installed.
Please disregard my advice on this. OK. I don't know the answer. Let me share a trick I have learned. The divide and conqur method. I have more that one PC amd more that one or two spare jard drives. When I get a tough problem, I try a new install on a spare drive or a spare PC. I have two or three OS to pick from This helps eliminate OS or hardware of freak install as the issue. This is really handy whne you suspect malware may be involved.
I have not seen that issue with javascript on Windows 7, but I don't spend a lot of my time on Windows 7. to Geek:
I have a third machine -- but it is unfortunately off limits. It is running WinXP and is gong to stay that way for a while because of other requirements. Unfortnately I have now run out. I cannot conceive how malware could have gotten in to either machine unless it could hafve been there but dormant under both McAfee and Norton. The laptop was a new machine with a free 90 subscription to Norton and the problem showed up when I uninstalled Norton (without a network connection).

------

As I said, I would like to identify the issue before blasting it with the equivalent of a 12 guage shotgun at 12 feet by nuking the two machines and reinstalling from scratch. I wish to make sure I never see the issue again.

------

I still have the test using Firefox and Chrome to try. I have had an interesting two days (and am still having them) -- totally unrelated to these computer issues. It may be a day or two before I can sit down and do these steps. They shoud be harmless and may tell something.

Wait a second...
you had TWO AV programs installed? That's bound to cause problems like this....

Did you run the Norton Removal tool as well?

No, no, no. Two machines.

Desktop had McAfee. Ran uninstaller to update. Problem occurred. Could not reinstall McAfee because JavaScript seems to be used for the install pages.

Laptop had Norton. Uninstalled Norton 90 day freebie to install previously paid McAfee suite. Problem occurred. Could not install McAfee because JavaScript seems to be used for the install pages.

This was in my first message. It is probably an IE addon. Try starting IE without addons by right-clicking it's shortcut and choosing "Start without addons"; or you can find the shortcut to do this in All Programs->Accessories->Internet Explorer (no addons)

My suspicion is that JS will suddenly WORK again, because whatever addon was installed is no longer hooking the JS engine. probably a remnant add-on from Norton and Mcaffee in each case. You can manage the addons in no-addons mode by going Tools->Internet Options, and on the Programs tab, you'll find the "manage Addons" button. Look for the related AV addons, and uninstall/disable them, and try starting the browser normally.to BC_Programmer
I thought I had looked at/done this. I will again -- later today (I hope). I have an extremely byusy schedule. I do not thinkk I have very many at all.I installed Firefox from link given above. I ran the Sunspider benchmark -- it was successful. I did not time it but it took less than 30 SECONDS to complete I loaded a web site that uses JavaScript for navigation -- it looked good.

I installed Chrome from link given above. I ran the Sunspider benchmark -- it was successful. I did not time it but it took less than 30 seconds to complete I loaded a web site that uses JavaScript for navigation -- it looked good.

I started IE without add-ons. I tried the Sunspider benchmark -- it still FAILS to run. I tried the same web site as above -- it still does not work.

Hmmm.

Should I try to reinstall IE 9 -- is it possible that would help?
Repair IE9...One down and one to go.

I used the Repair IE 9 link provided by patio, tried the fixes including reset IE 9 -- it still did not work. I finally un-installed IE 9 (it revereted back to IE and then reinstalled IE 9.
My desktop machine now works. The website looks good. I ran the sunspider benchmark -- it ran successfully (again in something less than 30 seconds. Something I thought was interesting -- I have heard over and over that IE is slow. the results of the Sunspider benchmark were:

Firefox: 272 ms
Chrome: 277 ms
IE 9: 245 ms

At least in this case, that appears not to be so.

Tomorrow I will tackle my laptop -- I am going straight to the un-install/re-install approach

Solve : Graphics Card problem?

Answer»

Hello guys.
I'm in a strange problem with my WINDOWS 7, I don't know why it's not compatible with my graphics card. A few months ago the card was working fine, then INSTALLED XP, now I have 7 again, the problem is that when I try to install the graphics card driver, after reboot the screen in black (it works fine in SAFE mode) and I have to uninstall it.
Windows 7 Ultimate with all updates, x86
Nvidia GT-440 1GB DDR3
The driver is compatible with windows 7, it says that even on the CD, so I don't know what's the problem
Forgot to mention, the screen goes black after the windows boots, at the logon screen, don't even see the mouse!
It's booting fine from XP and Ubuntu, only Seven failsIf it is a card then power down...
Remove the card and do a few cold boots...
Re-install the card and re-boot...have the Win7 Drivers READY when you re-boot.Solved, it was a setting in BIOS that was bugged, switched the primary monitor to onboard card and now the graphics card works fine.
Thank you for your suggestionNot sure i GET it ...if you switched to onboard graphics that means onboard chip is OK...
That doesn't fix the graphics card though...Quote from: alecsillidan on November 12, 2011, 10:42:21 AM

Solved, it was a setting in BIOS that was bugged, switched the primary monitor to onboard card and now the graphics card works fine.
Thank you for your suggestion
Yeah, but now you are going to use to onboard graphics card instead of the PCI-Express one. Do as you wish though.

Solve : HD Boot problems (tried them all)?

Answer»

I ran disk defrag last night and awoke this morning to find that my screen was black with the words : ZKDEW is Compressed. press Ctrl+alt+delete to restart. so i did and the load screen with windows came up with button options to run start-up and boot menus; the normal screen. then it went right back to that black screen. Ive tried running in safe-mode to no avail. booted from cd and ran the recovery and it couldn't find any problems with the boot at all. tried doing a command prompt restore, and a restore from the recovery cd to no avail. tried hitting and HOLDING f8 on start-up to attempt to get into safe-mode, or the Advanced Boot Options MENU. i cant think of anything else instead of a format, and that's the very last thing i want to do. does anyone have any ideas i may not have tried or forgot to type in here? my specs that i can recall off the top of my head are as follows:

intel core2 duo 2.2ghz T7500
windows 7
4gb of RAM
GeForce 8600M GT Quote

my screen was black with the words : ZKDEW is Compressed

That is really strange. I have never heard the word (or acronym) ZKDEW before and I googled it and found no information on it. I don't want to put you down, but you're not playing games are you?i was. TF2 and Fallout: New Vegas. and i had the chance to beta test Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic this WEEKEND. guess thats not going to happen.Quote from: Linux711 on November 10, 2011, 07:35:30 PM

Have you tried to do a repair install with your Windows 7 disc?
http://pcsupport.about.com/od/toolsofthetrade/ss/windows-7-startup-repair.htm

If you do manage to get your computer up and working, it would be smart to follow this piece of advice:
http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/2083-system-repair-disc-create.htmllol didnt notice that. i have tried a repair cd. didn't do anything. said it couldn't find any problemsi seem to have got passed the initial problem, somehow i compressed my disk. well i uncompressed it and now have another problem. it now loads to the starting windows splash screen where the windows logo SHOWS up, freezes there, flashes a BSOD for a 1/4 of a second, then restarts. tried running all recovery options again and they are not working. i started in safemode and it keeps stopping at classpnp.sys
not sure what that is. i tried running sfc /scannow in the windows recovery and it says: There is a system repair pending which requires reboot to complete. restart windows to and sfc again. i do this and it keeps saying the same thing.

thanks for the help so far.Boot to the Win7 DVD and run the startup repair...

Solve : Computer keep crashing for some odd reason?

Answer»

At first I had Window 7 home premium (I think that what you call it) and it started going SLOW and freezing a lot. So I decided to just install Window 7 professional on the computer to see if it would stop freezing and moving real slow. With the window 7 professional it really didn't install much on the computer the only thing I seen was a trash bin on the desktop and I had to add everything else. But every other minute the computer freeze and then turn blue. I can't remember what it says, but I think it said something like disable a hardware or update, and to put it in safe mode. Or call the manufacure to install a software or something I don't remember it all. But can someone help.I'd go to Device Manager by entering devmgmt.msc when you click on start and the search/command window that allows for typing of this instruction. Once your in Device Manager look for any devices with YELLOW or Red Alerts or Unknown Device type statements and report back any found. You can click on them and get more information most of the time.

Also what is make/model number of computer so we can help you find correct driver for the malfunctioning device.Quote

The only thing that have a yellow alert is the other devices. Under that it have the yellow alert which is unknown device.Download BlueScreenView http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/blue_screen_view.html
No installation required.
Double click on the BlueScreenView.exe file to run the program.
When scanning is done, go to Edit>Select All.
Go to File>Save Selected Items, and save the report as BSOD.txt.
Open BSOD.txt in Notepad, copy all content, and paste it into your next reply. Here you go:

It looks like this will be hard to diagnose. Here are some things I would try:

Download speedfan and check your temps

Download memtest86 (google it) and burn it to a CD. Then boot your computer from the CD. If you don't know how, google for "BIOS boot from CD"

while in Windows, go into your page file SETTINGS and turn it OFF. Then restart the PC, then turn it back on, and restart again. This will give you a new file and confirm your test.

Hope that helps. It will take a while to complete these; be patient.Ok, I will let you know how it goes, but for some reason the computer is now acting brand new lol. I don't know for how long but it dont usually move this fast.Changed my mind, try this before what I posted above:

Go to my computer
right click on C: drive
go to properties
tools
under error checking, check now
check both boxes
press start or ok (whatever it says)
press yes
reboot machine and it will take about an hour to check your disk

Solve : Operating system not found after enabling verifier.exe?

Answer»

My acer laptop has been having quite a bit of trouble recently. It has been BSOD'ing after log-in, usually with a IRQL Not Less or Equal Stop 0x0000000A error. It usually gets the blue screen in a matter of seconds following log-in, although OCCASIONALLY it takes up to 5-10 minutes. It does not blue screen in safe mode. After a bit of experimenting/scanning/cleaning I decided to turn to the driver verifier (oops).

Anyways, I enabled the driver verifier (verifier.exe) custom -> checked all the drivers outside of the Microsoft ones and then rebooted. The next BSOD did show a driver name but unfortunately I did not turn off the auto reboot upon BSOD (I thought I had) and it rebooted before I got the name of the driver down. I think I'd recognize it if I saw it again, but cannot post it here for further help.

Here's where it got worse. Now when I restart my laptop it just keeps displaying something very similar to this (I am away at school and it is kind of difficult to get the exact text but I will CERTAINLY try to add it to the thread later).

Broadcom -- some other info describing version # etc.
PXE-E61: Media Test failure, check cable
PXE-MOF: Exiting Broadcom PXE ROM.
Operating System not found.

I checked the BIOS boot order to no avail. I can't press f8 and get to safe mode, the operating system not found message is shown upon trying. Also, alt + f10 just results in the same message so I cannot try to find some sort of OS partition on my HDD. I'm about to go back to my laptop and just fiddle with the boot order a bit more, I'll report back and let you know if this has any effect.

In the mean time, any advice on what to do would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.Quote

PXE-MOF: Exiting Broadcom PXE ROM.
This refers to your Network card so if you have a BIOS option LAN or Network, disable this feature. Reseat the hard drive and all cables in your laptop. You could safely work with the bluescreen in safemode.I tried disabling the Network option. Everything works exactly the same except now the message skips the Broadcom version/check cable/ exiting message and just says "Operating system not found."

Although I have had to deal with hardware before (I assembled my desktop) laptops are a whole new monster for me. I tried TAKING the case off with little success, so INSTEAD I just took off the hard drive/memory cover. I reseated the hard drive but this changed nothing. I did the same for the memory. I don't know a whole lot about laptops and I'm confused on how to reconnect all the cables or even get to them, so I have not done that yet.

You said I could safely work with the blue screen in safe mode... I don't get a blue screen anymore, as I cannot even reach the f8 start up menu to try safe mode. Immediately after the first screen my laptop displays "Operating system not found," unless of course I go into BIOS. Thanks for the reply.Reinsert or replace also the CMOS battery. Do you see the hard drive recognized on your BIOS setup? The hard drive is recognized. I'm not entirely sure how to go about replacing the CMOS battery. Then again, I did find a pretty comprehensive guide to taking apart my exact laptop model here -> http://www.insidemylaptop.com/disassemble-acer-aspire-7551g-laptop/.

Maybe there was originally a hardware issue causing the BSODS, but I'm frustrated in trying to understand why activating the verifier would completely stop me from booting even in safe mode.

I read somewhere you can edit the registry offline to disable the driver verifier, do you know anything about this?Try booting with your original windows disk to use start up repair or make a system restore to an earlier point. http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/What-are-the-system-recovery-options-in-Windows-7try booting from cd and use bootsect /nt60 from command prompt utility

Solve : Operating system missing?

Answer»

I had a small virus on Dell XPS. Its about 8 months OLD with home edition. I did a system restore and a virus was HANGING AROUND about buying some virus scanner software...anyways. I did a restore and it was fine but the window kept popping up so I did another restore and I selected something different from the list. I was going FAST and I obviously wasnt paying attention. I hit cancel after it started restoring the files and I believe it was warning me that I would lose my stuff if I continued. I hit cancel now I have the missing operating system error. Dell didnt send me a windows 7 cd. I was suppose to let them backup my files OL but Im not letting anybody have access to my puter. So I bought an eternal HD and backed up everything there. I plugged into my laptop to check and everythings there. Heres the ? How the F do I restore from my external HD if missing my software?.......First of all, system restore does not eliminate the virus. Second, copying infected data is not a good idea. Last, I REALLY don't understand what you're trying to do.

If I were you, at this point I'd format the hd and start from scratch - and that's not a suggest I make often or lightly.another site wanted me to somehow get to advanced settings to restore......so far I cant

Solve : Start up problems.?

I have a toshiba Satelite L505D-GS6000 and this morning I was surfing the web and my laptop just shut off. So I thought that maybe it unplugged so I started it up. When it started up it was all normal but after it had the screen with the "Toshiba LEADING in Inovation" it went to a black screen with a blinking DASH to the top left and every time I click a button it beeps. When I click Ctrl alt Delete it goes back to the "toshiba leading inovation" screen. How do I fix it. And by the way I do have a RECOVERY disk but it wasnt working when I tried it. PLEASE HELP!!!!HARD Drive Crashes can cause this and for recovery disks to fail. If the HD is bad, the recovery disc's cant USE the drive to perform repair or clean install. I'd suspect the hard drive if it is not happy with bootable recovery CD/DVD.Disregard the above post.

Reboot. As soon as the system begins to boot start tapping the F8 Function Key. That should take you to the advanced boot options screen. From there, try "Last Known Good Configuration". If that doesn't work, try Safe Mode. Any luck with either?

Solve : Not sure this falls under software?

Answer»

In a previous post under hardware I tried to detail the problems I'm having GETTING a HD installed. Don't worry mister moderator I'm not making multiple posts on the same subject!! So I reseated the video card, changed the cables on the hd and it started to boot up. Said it was automatically configuring the IDE drive. Then it pops up that I need to go into setup to set date and TIME. Did that and checked boot sequence. Long story short it essentially went back to after the Dell loading window it's a black screen with a blinking cursor. Was getting two POST beeps, now none. Did a diagnostics test, hd passed. So I pretty much gave up on saving anything off the drive and went to install Windows 7 on it. Halfway through it says "windows cannot be installed to this hard disk space. Windows must be installed to a partition formatted as NTFS. Windows cannot be installed to this hard disk space. The partition is of an unrecognized type." It's a really old hd so I'm assuming it's FAT32 or whatever came before that.(if anything did). There's a section where I can load drivers but I have not clue where I would get those or if they would even help. I don't know how you're trying to install W7, but what you have to do is boot to the W7 DVD, choose the option to delete any existing partitions, then recreate the partition(s), format, and install. There are plenty of guides on the web that will walk you through a clean install of Windows 7.I was trying not to delete the partitions in hopes of saving the data but since I can't get the hd to boot up then I guess that's looking like it's not going to happen. It already had a version of windows on it so my assumption was it would boot up regardless and then I would update the OS. Guess notA) Slave Drive Tutorial...

To retrieve the data before the wipe...

B) Not a good idea to get testy with mister moderator as you called him...whoever that was...i already WIPED it and installed windows. works now. my friend didn't care too much about the data so wasn't a big deal. i will keep that link for later use. thanks.
as far as the moderator thing, i mentioned that from a another post. i posted something a week ago and wasn't getting much feedback on it. so i posted another one about the same topic hoping to elicit some help. i know that sort of thing is frowned upon and for the most part rightfully so. but what i had a problem with was that he deleted it, posted a reply on the original saying to not do it and that was it. ok you did your job as moderator. would it have been so hard to offer some advice on the problem i was having? his rank was "guru" so he obviously considers himself qualified in all things computer. i just don't get these sites sometimes. they are here to help people and yet it's like pulling teeth to actually get someone to help you. it's even worse for the people who have hardly any knowledge of computers. i know you are a moderator so this is probably falling on deaf ears. you have offered advice before and i appreciate it. it just seems like people who claim to want to share their knowledge and help OTHERS aren't being that sincere. guess i'll just keep posting problems or questions that arise in the future and hope some kind soul decides to take mercy on me.
thanks again for the linkIf duplicate posts were left up everytime we get them it would be a sloppy mess indeed...
The reason they are not prevelant which may leave the no big deal impression is that they are locked and/or cleaned out on a regular basis.

Keep in mind that all who assist here do so as Volunteers and on their own free time...they are not here 24/7....

As to there being no solution offered it may not have been their area of expertise...in that case it's best to not advise...rather than guess at solutions.

At any rate good to hear you resolved the ISSUE.

[regaining space - attachment deleted by admin]Disconnect the IDE HDD and run overnite...if no issues that's the culprit...
If no joy=joy from that method then 1 or more of the drivers installed on the new build are EITHER incorrect drivers...or corrupt.
Start replacing them 1 at a time with re-boots in between...MBoard chipset drivers 1st.Alright I'll try that out, thanks.

Just got a different blue screen though, image is attached.

Solve : desktop shows no display HP pavilion media ctr m8200nPC?

Answer»

When I turn on the desktop, both the POWER supply and the processor fans turn on. But thats it. There is no beep INDICATING successful boot, and there is no display on the monitor, not even the hp logo. What is going on? Do I need a new video card? Do I need to REINSTALL the operating system. Please help. I thought it was the graphics card, so I bought a XFX - Radeon HD 4550 Graphics Card from bestbuy and put it in the pcie slot. Then I fired up the computer, but still no display. Shouldnt I have some display? I checked the power supply. It DELIVERS a max of 300W. Could the power supply be too low in power? All the fans and leds and everything come on though.
What should I check next is the motherboard screen coming?no there is no display at all. What I noticed is there is no beep that indicates succesful POST, so that means the computer is not going successfully throu POST. Is that why there is no display
i think there is some problem in your motherboard. Quote

no there is no display at all. What I noticed is there is no beep that indicates succesful POST
Does your monitor turns on(green/blue) without display or just ORANGE?no it turns and says no signal on the screen. I think too that the motherboard is dead
Attache a PS/2 or USB keyboard before booting PC. About two minutes of pressing power button, Check numlock if it responds.

Solve : log on problem/no desktop?

Answer»

I have a Dell computer about 4 yrs old, Windows Vista OS. Several weeks ago I could not log on to my DESKTOP, I am the administrator of my computer. I can bring up the desktop of my daughter as user or as Guest as user. Their desk top comes up. I can go on the internet, etc but
I cannot get the computer to read a disc, nor, can I load a new printer software.

Can anyone GIVE me suggestions?

dontbilkme Sounds like you may have a corrupt profile for the administrator account (your acct), and the profiles that work are user accts vs ADMIN and thats why you cant install printer driver or install anything via Disc.

Last time I ran into this the computer was part of a corporate domain and so I was able to blow away their profile after GRABBING Favorites and My Documents, and create a new profile. But since this is a home computer and it had only 1 admin acct of which it is inaccessible, you may need to use a profile repair tool or perform a Windows Repair INSTALLATION.

If you have the system recovery disc's you could perform a Windows Repair Installation for Vista: http://www.top-windows-tutorials.com/reinstall-windows-vista.html

This will keep your data, favorites, etc, and correct for any corruption of system components including profiles. * Just be sure you are performing a Repair Install and not a Clean Install that will wipe all your data!!!

You have given us very little information to go on. Do you normally use webmail, i.e. access your email via web browser, or do you use an email client such as Outlook, Outlook Express, Windows Mail, Windows Live Mail, etc.? Exactly what happens when you try to attach a file and send it? How large are these FILES? Are you unable to send any attachment or only larger ones?

Solve : FTP connections?

Answer»

When I try to make an FTP connection, the COMPUTER WAITS for awhile and then GOES to an FTP prompt. However, it is not connected and there are no error messages. I have an FTP service running on a Windows XP box through IIS. I can CONNECT to it from the computer that is running the service. However, when I try to connect to it from another computer (I am running Windows 7 on the other box.) on the same NETWORK it fails. The two computers are sitting side by side and they are on the same segment.Did you already Google for:
FTP service on Windows XP IIS
Let me show you howIf you are running the Windows Firewall, you may need to go into the properties and allow it to accept FTP connections. For what it’s worth, FTP is extremely insecure as your user name and password are passed in plain-text. If you must run an FTP server and the resource is accessible to the internet, you should consider changing the default port (e.g. from 21 or 21000) so that a simple port scan from the internet does not detect it and identify the running service.

Ken
kenf916, good point.
SFTP is a better better (FTP over SSL). Don't bother trying this from the command prompt though - you'll need a decent FTP client like FileZilla.

Been getting this one for a really long while now, to produce it all i have to do is leave the COMPUTER unattended for ~20mins and it will generally blue screen, doesn't always happen though.

when i took a look at the dmp it noted that it was caused by ntoskrnl.exe or at least that was what was indicated.

Just wondering if anyone has had this problem before.

Solve : Dual Monitor/Projector not working with laptop?

Answer»

I have a Dell E6410 and I can't get a second display to work on it. When I got into the display options and try to DETECT a second monitor or projector hooked to it, it doesn't detect anything.
The drivers are all updated and I've tried using the function + F8 key to get it to work.
I noticed today that if I'm in the BIOS and I CLOSE the lid to the laptop it will display on the projector, but once Windows BOOTS it won't display on the projector no matter what I do.Have you already done this?
Google: E6410 running dual monitors
http://www.google.com/search?q=E6410+running+dual+monitors&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:en-GB:official&client=firefox-a

The Dell laptop does not WITCH to external monitor unless there is a monitor in place and you have the right drivers installed.

Solve : Cannot read files on usb HDD?

Answer»

Have new computer with windows 7. Removed HDD ("C" drive) from OLD computer (also WIN 7) and installed it as a USB drive. I cannot see ALL (only some) of the folders and virtually none of the files. I know that at least some of the files exist because I installed Picasa and it grabbed the PICTURES from the old drive. How can I see these files to copy to my new computer? You can't. The USB adapter has an issue.
Use a different method.
Does the old PC work? If so, do the transfer using the Ethernet connection. Or a Lap Link cable.
Did you read this?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_Easy_Transfer
The above ARTICLE has some issues, but gives the GENERAL idea of methods that might work.

The point is that obviously you can not use that USB adapter. Later, if you want, you can find out why. But for now, it just doesn't not work.

My warranty expired last month
Thank you starchefNormally you cant view these florescent lights for backlighting. Has your display lid cracked open to reveal them? Also I have never seen where you can see thru the display itself to see the backlighting bulbs? I have seen before where DAMAGED laptop displays look bleached out before as the result of a good drop or after being sat on by accident as one client presented to me. Display ACTS like it was delaminated causing everything to be bleached out and blury.

Is there a way you can take a PICTURE of what you are SEEING to attach here in a post, so we can observe exactly what you are seeing? Is this a FARCE ? ?

Solve : HELP!!! Monitor Problems.?

Answer»

Any suggestions on what is causing this and how to fix it?
Thanks.

[regaining space - attachment deleted by admin]I suspect this is not a monitor but a display CARD problem.
While Salmon Trout may be POINTING in the right direction tell us some more about what we/you are dealing with here. What is this monitor attached to? What if anything were you doing that was coincident to this PHENOMENON 1st occurring? Let us begin there for starters. truenorthThe monitor is connected to my tower via a cable.
The problem first occured when I switched to full screen whilst watching a DVD, since then it has been permanently like this.
My computer is a dell inspiron 530 intel core 2 duo.If its not a onboard video card pull it and reseat it.

If it's on-board video, then try a video card.I doubt that doing the following will do much to resolve your issue other than confirming that it is NOT the monitor. Take your monitor and connect it to another computer. If the situation is normal then the issue is not the monitor. What possibly could change your problem on the computer where the issue is occurring is if you were able to go to your "display" properties for you monitor and change the RESOLUTION parameters it might get you out of the situation you are in. However how you are going to be able to do that when you cannot properly see the display is problematic. You have as yet to tell us whether you video is from an on-board (integrated) card or is a standalone one. Depending on your use and needs video cards can be quite inexpensive (unless you need advanced technology for game playing or high end graphics) so installing a standalone graphics card WOULD more than likely get you up and running again. truenorth

Solve : Windows Freezing often with CMOS date/time reset?

Answer»

First, the issue happened once and then didn't happen again for weeks. Then it started happening more frequently until it now happens within minutes of windows starting.

The problem:

Windows boots normally. After reaching my desktop the PC will randomly freeze without warning. (Mouse doesn't move, program/browser stops suddenly, etc.) The screen APPEARS like a SCREENSHOT of whatever was happening when the freeze occurs.

After a HARD reset, the option appears to "Go to BIOS setup" or "Load Default Values". After choosing option 2, the date is set to 2005 and the usual "Windows did not shut down properly" message appears.

The computer:

HP Pavillion, 2009
windows vista
1 gig stick replaced last year
video card also replaced last year, everything else original parts.

I'm pretty competent on software things, not really that experienced with hardware outside of basic replacement (like a video card). I need help!
Replace the CMOS battery...Part # CR2032 AVAILABLE anywhere...
As always when working inside the PC remove all POWER sources and take anti-static precautions...

See how it goes overnite after this...if it is still freezing randomly DLoad and run SpeedFan and Post all your system temps here.I replaced the battery, started it up, and the same problem is occuring.OK...what about part 2 above ? ?
Post the temps reported by SpeedFan...The problem seems to have worked itself out. After a couple of days, the freezing has no longer happened. Strange result.

Thanks for the help!Good News...strange...but good nonetheless.

Solve : installer_msi_....msi keeps popping up every 30mins or so?

Solve : Toshiba Canvio Basics 320GB not accessible from other machines & drives?

Answer»

Patio...help!!!

I'm running Win7x64 Home Prem on a Lenovo G550 laptop, 4G, 2.3ghz, 320GB. Plugged a new Toshiba Canvio Basics 320GB usb ext HDD into it, worked great. SWAPPED HDD's out in the same laptop (to use my OEM Win7 Home Prem distro rather than Lenovo's). I plugged the Canvio in and I was locked out via ACL's. Okay, this IS an NTFS ext drive, so ... not surprising. Log in as Admin, took OWNERSHIP if the Canvio, formatted the drive and it worked fine. UNTIL I swapped back to the factory Lenovo HDD.

At this juncture the Canvio showed files, but they were from the time when the Canvio ACL's were the factory/original ACL's... not the one's I had "overwritten". THAT was weird. I was immediately concerned that a problem had just manifested itself and I swapped back to the non-factory HDD with the OEM Win7 on it and suddenly the OS could not access the Canvio - yet it had been doing so just ten minutes earlier.

The "error" message: "E:\ is not accessible. The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable".

Using - Start/Computer/manage/disk management; it shows the drive as E:\ 289GB healthy primary, RAW file system.

Using - My Computer/Properties; it shows the drive being 100% used/full.

I plugged the Canvio into my Dell Inspiron running XP Pro, it gave the same error message: "E:\ not accessible. The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable".

Thanks in advance!

UPDATE:

I just switched back to the factory Lenovo HDD, and now IT won't recognize the Canvio ext drive. The 1st error message: "F:\ not accessible. Incorrect parameter".

I unplugged it, re-plugged and from that point on the error message was: "F:\ Not accessible. The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable".

Was there any problems as why you started swapping drives in the first place?UPDATE #2:

SOLVED! I ran chkdsk E:/r overnight and when I woke up, windows Auto Play window was waiting for me to GIVE it instructions as to what I wanted to do with the drive. I clicked to open folders and a blank window appeared. What a tease!

But I remembered how I had to take ownership (set ACL's) in the past and so, in Computer, I right-clicked the ext drive icon, selected Security TAB. This showed that only SYSTEM and Administrators group were listed, but oddly none had any specific permissions assigned. I simply added full control to SYSTEM, deleted Admin group, added my personal Admin account and my "everyday user" account and voila!

All is right with the world that bytes.

Solve : hp625(windows7 ultimate) to debien os?

Answer»

i recently bougth a hp625 that runs on windows 7(utimate) however, i the hard disk developed a problem and i have to CHANGE it.the installation disk i used to load windows i believe is fake. can i download a linux os? which os should i download? is it as good as windows or better? I like Ubuntu Linux and its secure and free, but if you like to play video games that are written specifically for Windows systems, you can get some of them to work through WINE.

Other than that Linux is very secure and has tons of free software available. I use a few versions, but Ubuntu is probably the most home user friendly and popular.

I like MINT, Fedora, and Ubuntu, as well as the LIVE Distro Knoppix which is a version that can run directly from a CD or DVD disc and WITHOUT the need for a hard drive. Knoppix is mainly used by me for accessing NTFS file system when there is viral stuff on the drive, however I used it on some old systems at a prior workplace for non-infectable systems in break rooms for employees to be able to check their e-mail and the weather and news etc, and it couldnt be compromized to do evil on the corporate network. MOUNTED the CD Drive internal to the case, USB port and floppy drive disabled, and only the PS2 keyboard and mouse used for user interaction, so that no ONE could try to be smarter and insert any other bootable media into the CD drive.

Solve : Moving emails and contacts in Outlook to a new computer?

Answer»

I just purchased a new Dell laptop, Windows 7. How do i copy and INSTALL all my emails, and contacts, in Outlook, from my old Vista computer to my new one after I setup my Outlook email account???

thanks,
PeterYou need to look this over.
http://www.sevenforums.com/browsers-mail/35739-outlook-express-windows-live-mail.html

Another idea. You may wish to USE Thunderbird rather that Microsoft mail. Once Thunderbird is on your old MACHINE, it will IMPORT from Outlookl Express.
http://kb.mozillazine.org/Import_from_Outlook_Express

Also, there are some 'portable' e-mail clients that can run on a USB drive. To move to another machine you just TAKE the USB drive and plug it into another machine.

Solve : Problem with dll file?

Answer»

I cannot start any programs or applications in my pc. I am using Windows 7 OS
and starting this morning I got an error MESSAGE that said that the program could not start because WkWbl90.dll is missing from my computer. It said try reinstalling the program to fix this problem. This program is Microsoft WORKS.
Do I find the dll file and try to install this or find a copy of Microsoft works and install it? All help will be appreciated. I can operate my computer in the safe mode, so that is a big help, but no applications will run in the normal mode.
I installed a trial copy of Microsoft Office 2007 yesterday and upgraded my free copy of Avast antivirus this morning just before the problem started, so one of those might be the culprit or else something totally different.
You can try an uninstall and reinstall to correct for this. Most installers check for dependents and populate the necessary DLL's etc. If you can get the DLL from a known clean source you can of course just insert it into the correct library location. If you think the AV was the culprit look in its quarantine or history to see if it picked up on this as being a positive or false positive detection. I have seen false positive detections before, but its mainly with the networking tools I use that can be used for evil in the WRONG hands.Thank you for your RESPONSE. I assume that you are referring to uninstalling and reinstalling Microsoft Works. I did copy Microsoft works from my netbook to a flash DRIVE, but I am not sure that there is an installer in the program, so I don't know how to install the new copy of the Works program.

Solve : What does Performance Alert that Norton shows mean??

Answer»

Sometimes on my computer, something called "Performance Alert" pops up on my screen. Its from Norton and sometimes it says "Performance Alert shows high usage of Internet Explorer" or "Performance Alert shows high usuage of CPU". What does that mean? My computer sometimes FREEZES now and I have to download Windows Updates which are successfully installed. Does that mean I have to upgrade to Internet Explorer 9? I just upgraded to IE 8 less than a week ago. The Norton performance alert is generally meant to warn you of possible viruses and spyware taking a lot of memory, CPU, or bandwidth, and if it WARNS you about IE, you PROBABLY don't need to WORRY. Specs?

Solve : Zip File- Cannot save or print?

I am working with Windows 7 and downloaded a bid that was a zip file. I can open it to see 2 files, but I can't save it or print it. Tried to send a screen print but it comes as a .docx and cannot load it. Tried changing it but said it cannot be read as .doc.What file extension is on the files once they are decompressed?.jpgSo they are pictures. What PROGRAM are you USING to open and print the files? They are not pictures but the bidder saved them this way. When I right click the zip file I get a choice "Open With.." and when I click that it offers Windows Explorer as the only choice.

After I open the .jpg the only choice I have is to copy it and I tried that (copy to WORD) but it didn't work.Never mind I was able to copy and PASTE to a word doc.Glad to see you got it sorted out.

Solve : Anybody out there own a Zune? Anyone? The ship is going down....?

i don't even have the energy to explain this whole thing. essentially i built a new pc, tried to reinstall zune software, didn't work and have been in *censored* on earth ever since. i can't tell you how many things i've done to try to fix this problem to no avail. if any of you out there are experiencing this same problem or have in the past and have any helpful suggestions i would love to hear them. sad thing is i probably already have over at answers.microsoft.com and tried each ONE 20 times and none fixed the problem. SERIOUSLY. if there is any budding computer enthusiasts out there who are looking to hone their skills, particularly in the windows fields, then this is your white whale. Quick question .....
Is this all on the same PC the other issues you posted about...or another one ? ?all on the same one
Do you get an error message when you try to INSTALL the software? What happens exactly?

Have you tried right clicking the setup file and run as administrator?yep. first it was the "you already have the latest version of zune installed". after a install cleanup it has been "error code 00087643" or something like that. says it failed to install and had to quit. i just tried earlier to run as admin and didn't work. i seriously have done 10 different things to get it to install and didn't work. was on the live chat with microsoft for 2 HOURS and after trying to make me do everything i explained in the opening statement that i already did he said that i would have to reformat windows 7 and reinstall. no way is that going to work so that's not an option. you have any thoughts? you need more specific info i'll be glad to give itWhat version of 7 is installed ? ?ultimate 64-bit
Install the XP compatibility mode...Here...

Then re-install Zuneman i got excited when you gave me a solution that no one has mentioned. UNFORTUNATELY it didn't work. clicked on the link and downloaded the XP mode and virtual pc. went through the setup process and everything loaded correctly. tried to download zune from both microsoft's and zune's website and neither worked. so unless i'm supposed to be doing something different in regards to the xp mode then i'm back to square one. Finally found the solution. here's the link

Solve : Virus Protections?

Answer»

I just WANT to know if you NEED to use a spyware as well as a malware, can or should you run them bot at the same time. Also will they conflict if you do so.Any anti-virus software that RUNS in the background as your main client will conflict with any others you have. For e.g Norton and Microsoft security essentials. If you run something like malwarebytes or superantispyware as a one off scan your fine.

Just don't have two background anti VIRUSES running at the same time. Thank you!!!Your welcome. Malwarebytes is not antivirus software, as such, and can indeed be run alongside most antivirus systems.

From Malwarebytes: "MBAM is designed to work along side your existing antivirus software , not conflict or compete with it ."

A secured router, a fast antivirus system (Webroot/Kaspersky [not a suite]), an anti-malware program (Malwarebytes Pro), and some basic malware infection prevention knowledge does the trick for me, and my HOME user clients.

Best o' luck!Never run more than 1 scan at a time...no matter what the app is.

Solve : Trouble formatting?

Answer»

Working on a Toshiba laptop that came stock with Vista basic. I'm trying to format the thing, but it's at 1% after an hour of formatting. What could be causing this?Disk on the fritz, probably. How are you doing the format? Have you checked the hdd data and power cables?

Yeah, I was thinking there was a bad sector on the HDD so I was doing a full format, but it seemed to format okay using quick format so I guess everything is okay. Not NECESSARILY. A full format RUNS chkdsk /r before formatting. From what you've said, I think you should run chkdsk /r before going any further.I would agree, a quick format won’t tell you if the HDD has any bad sectors. I would RECOMMEND using a disk verifying utility like Spinrite (www.grc.com). It runs around $50.00 but it does a great job identify and fixing bad sectors. The utility takes about a day depending on the SIZE of the hhd to run and repair but once done, you should be able to get the whole disk back. Then you can run a full format and it should be ready for reuse.

Ken. I respectfully disagree with you. At one time SpinRite was a great too. Now for under $100 you can make a better investment buying a another HDD to verify the problem is in the drive and not the motherboard or anything other that the HDD. A GOOD refurbished HDD will do.
a aberration in drive geometry. Tine preferred method of hardware diagnostic is by substitution. Not paid software diagnostics. The free stuff from the drive makers are good enough.

Solve : Windows 7 persmissions?

Answer»

i'm running 7 ultimate 64-bit. i INSTALLED it on a new hdd i bought. added two older hdds for extra STORAGE. they still had quite a bit of stuff on them that i copied over to the new hdd. what i keep running into is permission problems. i keep getting errors saying i don't have permission for this or that and i'm the administrator. there is no other account on my computer. thing is it's not just on the old hdds. i've had it pop up on the new ONE. i'm just trying to find the best setting to stop making me have to change PERMISSIONS on everything and not ask me all the time if i do or don't want to do something. i know there has to be security and that's all well and good. this is just getting to be really really annoying.
while we are on the subject of microsoft, anyone out there own a zune? i can't even tell you the crap i'm going through trying to reinstall the software on my new pc If the new build has the same computer name, same user name, and same password... I believe you get pass thru authentication with your older drives secure folders. Problem you have is that they appear foreign to your new build, and data security is getting in the way. I did this way back for early NTFS, not sure if it will work for Win 7, but you can give it a try. All names and password have to be exact alphanumeric case sensitive.Take Ownership...

The info is for XP but the procedure is the same...Ok. I'll give it a try and see what happens. ThanksLooks like it's for individual folders. I knew how to do that. I just thought there might be a setting that could make it where I would have permission over everything instead of on a case by case basis. Kind of a set something and then NEVER have to do it again. Guess not. Oh well. Not that big of a deal really. Just a nuisance I'll have to deal with for a bit. If only I could say the same for my Zune software. I love the player but the software and the company's inability to troubleshoot it is an absolute nightmare. Anyways, thanks again guys. This is a permission issue related to NTFS. The Security Identifiers (SIDS) that are set for those file are from a different system. As a result, the SID your current system presents has no permissions.

Solution: You need to Take Ownership of the files and Folders on the drives.

Go to Computer | {Select one of the drives} | Right click on the Drive Icon | Left Click on Properties | Click the Security Tab | Click the Advanced Button | Click the Change Permission Button | set teh permission you need and make sure to check the Replace Child Object Permissions box.

This will take a while depending on the size of the drive. Repeat for each drive and you are done.

Solve : Number Keys will write symbols ONLY?

I am writing this on another computer instead of the one that has the problem:
On the computer with the problem typing the number keys e.g. 12345 preduces [emailprotected]#$% .......
This happens regardless of wheither or not the shift key is pressed.

ALSO, the : ; key and < , keys will produce ONLY the top characters. On a Desktop that means you have to get another keyboard.
On a laptop you can ATTEMPT to clean the keyboard. But may be the caps lock key is stuck. Thanks for replying. BUT the problem seems to be in the shift key. Lower case letters are produced REGARDLESS of whether or not the shift key is pressed. Numeric keys produce symbols regardless of whether or not the shift key is pressed. OK. The shift key is stuck down. Gently remove it and see if you can find the problem. It could be either shift key.

There is a ribbon cable on some laptops that can be BROKEN or LOOSE. It is possible that could be the cause. I saw that in another forum.Do you write with the AZERTY settings with a QWERTY keyboard?

Ex.:
Q=A
W=Z
Etc.here is a website that explains about the AZERTY keyboard which is the one they use in France. if that is your problem it tells you how to fix it.

hope this helps.

On a Desktop that means you have to get another keyboard.
On a laptop you can attempt to clean the keyboard.

You can buy NEW laptop keyboards too.

Not sure the question of if this is a laptop was answered. However, if so I see this a lot on Dell's. The number lock button seems to activate on boot causing the blue alternative number pad (see keyboard) to activate. Toggling the number lock off seems to resolve this issue.

Solve : BSOD on two computers on the same router?

Answer»

Hi everyone,

I recently purchased an HP DV6TSE and have had it for about a month. I have webroot anitvirus software.

My computer was acting glitchy so I rebooted and walked out of the room, upon returning there was a BSOD. That said: "DRIVER_STATE_POWER_FAILURE" (I attatched a picture of the SCREEN that I took with my phone, if any needed info is unclear, please let me know). The kicker is that a family members laptop has been showing the same BSOD for a long time (monthes, if not over a year).

The said computers share a wirless connection and some of the data on both of them are from an older family computer. Other than that, there are really no common factors that I can think of that could have incited this issue.

Do any of you know what could be causeing this or how to fix it?

Thanks in advance.

Ace. Immage the the screen

[regaining space - attachment deleted by admin]Let's work on one computer at a time, so we can avoid any confusion. Okay?

The one you want to work on first, do this:

Download BlueScreenView
No installation required.
Double click on the BlueScreenView.exe file to run the program.
When scanning is done, go to Edit>Select All.
Go to File>Save Selected Items, and save the report as BSOD.txt.
Open BSOD.txt in Notepad, copy all content, and paste it into your next reply.Heres what I got. Thank you for TAKING your time to help!

The potential causes for your issue can be varied. Here is a link to a video that explains many of them with solutions to some and sufficient info that if the most common causes does not solve it the ability to follow up on the others.

P.S. Enjoy the accent of the narrator.aceofspades991, Bluescreenview is showing only one crash. If this is the only one you have gotten, I wouldn't worry about it. The DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE means that one of your drivers didn't come out of or go into sleep mode properly. In this case it was the windows kernel driver. There could be many reasons for this, but like I said, if it happened only once I wouldn't worry.

Thanks for the info, I'll LOOK into the video when I have time to try the solutions.

The main reason that this alarmed me, is as I said a family members computer has been doing this on a nightly BASIS and we've spen hours talking to tech support with dell to no avail, I don't know much about viruses but to me it seemed suspicious that we both had identical screens. Does this sound like a coincidence? If s then I'll let it be and hope it doesnt happen again.Additional information for 0X0000009F BSOD code http://support.microsoft.com/kb/246243
