Solve : Windows 7 Home Premium - cannot type in administrator password?

Answer»

My daughter has a laptop with Windows 7 Home Premium OS. Whenever we try to download anything, we get a security pop-up that says:

Do you want to allow the following PROGRAM to make changes to this computer? To continue, type an administrtator password, then click yes.

There is no place to type a password and the "YES" box is grayed out. I am only able to click on "NO." I REALIZE this user account does not have administrator priveleges so I tried to go into user accounts to assign her account administtrator rights but I get the same pop-upTry lowering the notification slider on your UAC settings by CONTROL Panel/System Security/Action Center/Change UAC Settings, click Ok.

Try this settings. Its POSSIBLE that its on Always Notify.I am unable to make the change. There is a shield icon next to "Change UAC settings" that indicates I will get a security pop-up - which I do - in order to access the UAC settings: and then I'm unable to type in an admin password as the pop-up asks (I mentioned this in my first post). Why cannot I even type in the password if that's what's required?

FYI: There is a shield icon next to many differnet areas in Control Panel: add or remove user accounts, set up parental controls, change UAC control settings, device manager. All of these get the same pop-up.See if this works for you: http://www.tweak-uac.com/home/At this point, having read the article about the efficacy of UAC, I would love to just turn it off. Unfortunately, I cannot download anything because the pop-up asking me to allow the download is the same one I've been getting and I cannot type an Admin password into the pop-up. Try booting into safemode...try the download...and try turning UAC off as per the instructions...Interestingly, I booted up in Safe Mode and was GIVEN a choice of logging on as an Administrator account or a user account. I logged on as Admin (it was password protected and I know the password). I was then able to turn off the UAC without having to use the tweak tool. Thanks, Patio.

I still wonder why I was not allowed to type an Admin password into the UAC pop-up. I thought that was the whole point: to be able to choose to allow and action or not as long as the password is known.I'd bet that when you tried you were in a simple User account...where that option would be greyed out by design.Ah, yes I was. So the choice to allow an action or not only happens with the Admin account?Correct....otherwise Users would be able to make changes the Admin doesn't want.

Good to hear you're solved and Welcome to CH ! !

Solve : very strange crashign of game PLEASE READ?

Answer» HEY, so lately I have been having some issues with all my games. You see a few months ago my computer crashed while playing CRYSIS 2 and the screen never showed any PICTURE while the computer was on, so I went to my local computer shop to get it looked at and upgraded(I thought it was time for an upgrade anyway)I took it home thinking it was all good until I tried playing crysis 2 again. It crashed, well not the computer but the screen goes into POWER saving mode and I cant turn it back on until I restart the computer. The computer shop ran all the tests and everythings fine, its not overheating or anything they dont think, although the first time I took it back(yes I have had to take it back about 3 or 4 times, I even tried a different shop) there was a cord jammed in one of the fans, but they replaced that. I really need help here, its been like this for 5 months now. I really dont know. Its usually when I play some of my more “hardcore games” like crysis1&2, section 8, brink etc, it DOESNT have a specific time when it crashes(screen goes into power saving mode) its just random. I can play a game for days without anything happening and then BOOM!, CRASH!. I dont know if I have a faulty GPU, CPU, motherboard or whatever, what are the symptoms for that? Anyway really need help here, I am desperate so if any of you compiter gurus have any ideas of siggestion on what I can do please tell me!
Thanks

AMD phenom Iix4 965 processor 3.40 GHz

Windows 7 64-bit

Perhaps you could install a temperature monitoring utility; I have a Phenom 945 and I use a program called AMD Core Temp which shows the CPU temperature in the system tray and also can write readings to a log file. That way after a crash you can see how hot it was getting.

By the way, it is neither necessary nor polite to include "PLEASE READ" in the subject line. In fact many people ignore such threads.

Solve : Screen goes black after playing video games?

Answer»

Heya guys I've CAME here several times in regards to my HP Pavillion dv7 Laptop.

my problem is as follow...

when i play any video game on my laptop my screen goes black, but not black as if it's off, but black as if its still on, i just can't see, hear, or more anything. Its as if it freezes but going black with the lights on. And it only happens when i am connected to the wall plug/main/adapter... can anyone help me, please?

i have tried everything i can think of and what i've been advised to do; remove the battery and keep the main plugged in (it still goes black), bought a new adapter, it still goes black, took it to best buy and they have no idea whats up but everything seems to be working fine. Had a fan pointing to my screen the whole time (from the back)

Only time my screen does NOT go black is when i remove the adapter and play on battery life.

here's a video of how it looks like when it goes black: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=54FF11Qs2Tg

please help!
Try using an external monitor. Then plugged in adapter to check on whether the issue is the same. Is the blackscreen present when in safemode? Have you made any CHANGES or settings on Power options and refresh rate?Quote from: gamergirl305 on July 24, 2011, 12:54:38 AM

ok! give me a few to do so, does the monitor have to be PC or can it be my TV as well?

what do you mean by "blackscreen present when in safemode?" ?

i probably may have changed the power settings to make it save power...

what is a refresh rate?

i forgot to mention that i once connected my laptop to my TV for a school project back in Sept of 2010, i dont recall ever changing any settings or changing it back or anything... i just connected, waited, and it appeared from my laptop to my TV, when i FINISHED recording my project presentation I disconnected and nothing more, i dont recall changing any settings there or if any changes took place without me knowing? But i just remember doing a restore to factory settings after i did all that, sometime in January or later in 2011 I don't know if anything occured or if i did anything wrong or if the installing messed up somewhere... Could there be shorting out on the mobo or just a setting once the adapter is plugged in? Try booting in safemode w/out the AC adapter plug. Power up laptop then keep pressing F8. Under Advance Menu, choose SAFEMODE(only). When in desktop, try plugging your power plug. What happens? Another test would be to remove the battery pack and directly connecting laptop to adapter on first boot up. What is the RESULT on these two tests?

heya Jason2074!
for the first test, i did the safe mode thing and when i connected to my plug, on safe mode, on my desktop, nothing happened... i left it there for 20 mins and nothing happened
for the 2nd test, when removing the battery pack, i got the black screen, i calculated the time in case that does anything for you... i started playing at 1:15am and i got the black screen at 3:23am.

i notice something weird though! and im noticing i think it is the power settings... when i was playing (without the adapter) i had the battery setting to, I THINK, High performance and i got the black screen WITHOUT being connected to the main wall, plug, adapter, whatever its called. But just now, i finished playing my game and i had it in "power saver" and did NOT get the black screen and WAS NOT connected to the adapter....Quote from: jason2074 on July 28, 2011, 12:28:41 AM

when im in a page filled with animation, it happens. The games i play are; Farmville, Cityville, Farmtown, World of Warcraft, and Uno. Every now and then, Family Feud, and The Price is Right. any of those games i play, while connected to the adapter, my screen goes black =O(

when i am NOT playing, the screen doesn't go black, i can leave it connected to my adapter for years if i can and it wont go black. When i'm on battery life and play my games, everything is okay, i can play with no problems, until my battery dies. Let's try looking in the Laptop's Power options. Click Start and type Power options-Hit Enter. Under Power Plans(or similar description) look for Balance or Recommended settings and put a tick or checkmark. Look on you left panel(if available) for an option or similar to Choose when to turn off display, and when under that option, search for an option to Restore default settings for this plan or something that is related. The settings given are on a different brand of laptop, so you may want to use it as a guide on making certain changes. Alternately while on those options, you will be able to view Battery(On Battery) and AC adapter(Plugged in) set on specific time for display, sleep and brightness.

Can you play offline games with the adapter connected? Your issue requires more patience and effort as when not playing online(?)games, the screen does not go blank. Try looking for an Updated driver here for your current graphics driver and reinstall if available. Choose exact Pavilion model and operating system and type(64 or 32 bit). To check for your current version, go to your Device manager and expand display adapter. Right-click then Properties and go to Driver tab.

You should realize also that Laptops are not for heavy and long time gaming activities as compared to custom built gaming desktops. Try dusting the laptop from inside and out. If you are weary of opening the laptop, ask for assistance from someone who is more verse. A usb powered external fan will help dissipate thermal events. Make SURE the laptop's vents are not being blocked while in use.

current adware/spyware/virus programs being used on a regular basis; Microsoft Security Essentials
You need to identify these programs for you may have installed two that requires only one as they may also cause some issues. Go to program files folder or look for the icons shown on your desktop. The problem as I understand it is that you can play games fine on your laptop when it is not plugged into the wall, but the screen goes black freezing the games when it is plugged into the wall. I know your frustration as this exact issue plagued me recently. Like you I suspected the power supply was faulty at first because the apparent problem is overheating of the gpu. You figured out like me that the power supply cord wasn't faulty because a replacement didn't work.

This is how I fixed the problem for myself and I suspect how you will be able to fix it as well:
Power supply settings---> The way your computer uses and delegates the use of power when plugged in and not plugged in should be the only variable I can think of besides a faulty supply unit, which we have already excluded.

So, check your power options. Often there are simple options for power consumption, but you can typically adjust these to your custom settings including adjusting the amount of power going to your gpu (the most likely culprit). What you need to do first is find out exactly the power settings your laptop is using when not plugged in for every category in regular and advanced power settings. Then change your plugged-in settings to match your battery settings exactly.

After this, test and see if the computer is running your games fine. If this fixes the problem for you as it did for me, then go back though and re-adjust whatever power settings you desire while re-checking to isolate the specific settings which need to be left changed to play games. Like I said, the likely culprit is in the power being allocated to your gpu when plugged in versus using the battery.

EDIT: As an interesting note, I have the same gpu as you in my laptop. It seems possible that this is the cause? Did your laptop ever run games fine while plugged in?I'm having this exact issue, the only difference is that I have an HP pavilion dv6-2066dx, I did what ShnarftBaby suggested and the "culprit" was indeed the gpu, the only way for me to play games while plugged in is to switch my gpu energy settings to maximize battery life, which allows me to play games, but at a very low fps .

On the other hand, I can play games while the laptop is not plugged in with the gpu energy settings set to maximize performance.

So I only get the black screen if my computer is plugged in and the gpu energy settings are set to maximize performance... is there any way to fix this?

Solve : Java, batch error help?

Answer»

I have been getting a LOT of java and .BAT errors recently for files that are in their proper locations.

I dont know what caused this, but I recently had (and still have, to an extent) some malware problems.
If it is relevent to the issue, the errors I have been getting are
'java' is not recognized as an internal or external command. -fixed by adding the path
'find' is not recognized as an internal or external command. -fixed by adding the path

The system cannot find the batch label specified - binaryfind
The filename, directory name, or volume label syntax is incorrect. -not fixed.

My current error is in a .bat file where I have an almost identical version which runs normally. Do you need to see the code to explain what is going on here?
Actually I just reran the original file and it is also broken now. I have to assume that binaryfind is missing or used improperly.

It wasnt being called because the script only called it after it had already been completed once. I CHANGED the settings to show that I hadnt run it before and the problem was RESOLVED.

Solve : Massive problems?

Answer»

Where do I begin? How about on startup. I get beeps on the black screen until i press ESC which stops it after a bit. Then, my mousepad doesn't work anymore. It's not SENSITIVE to touch or SCROLL up and down, but I can still use it to move the cursor around.

Then, my recording programs both have problems. In FL Studio v9, I can't open any window whatsoever, that includes right clicking. As soon as I click on one, it closes immediately. Cubase 5 has the "Vst performance" meter flash on and off at the speed of light, not allowing me to do anything. Then it slows down and sometimes crashes.

Then as I PROCEED to open Google Chrome, it has a bar at the bottom of the screen also flash on and off very rapidly and I can't type or click on anything because the focus turns to that bar that POPS up. This also happens but worse on Internet explorer, because this F12 window flashes on and off also at the speed of light.

I have no idea what's going on. Please help. I've tried full SCANS with malwarebytes, MS security essentials, and advanced system care, with near to no results showing anything close to a virus.DLoad and run Stinger on that machine...
Do NOT interrupt it.
Let it fix what it finds then re-boot the PC.

It needs a PDF reader such as Adobe Acrobat. You must have set the file association to Notepad by mistake.

Clarification:

This is a PDF HEADER. It identifies an Adobe PDF file. If you enable viewing of file extensions you will see the filename ends in .pdf, unless the file has been (wrongly) renamed.

So should I download Acrobat reader or something like that?Or Foxit Reader...much smaller and lighter on resources...
Then right clik any .PDF file and select Open with...then choose Foxit or Adobe and select it to always open this file type...I tried downloading Adobe but I dont know if it WORKED. I downloaded the latest one they had. I thought it was working but I dont know. +1 for Foxit. Less bloat, more function.

Since you have Foxit INSTALLED now and it's working, you can safely uninstall Adobe Reader if you don't need it. No sense in having both.

Solve : An interesting problem?

Answer»

So I'm putting this up on this part of the forum because I am uncertain of the problem that I am having with a computer belonging to a friend. He owns an Acer aspire 4720z, and believe me he would like nothing more than to burn the thing because its a piece of junk, but money is tight. It has windows vista on it to make matters worse. The problem RIGHT now is that once you start up the computer and log in, all you get is a black screen and the mouse. I can't even get to task manager on this thing to try to run some programs. Safe mode is no different. I tried a system restore for two days AGO (which is as far as it would let me), but that did nothing. I ran a memory DISK scan, and it came up clean. That's really all I've been able to do with it. I'm afraid that it is a hardware problem, but i have no way of knowing because theres so little that i can do with this computer. Any suggestions?Try doing a fresh OS Install. Is there data on the hard drive that you absolutely NEED to salvage? If so in this case it would be best to take it out and slave it to a working computer to backup your data first.Good idea. I just don't know if my friend has his OS backup discs still. That and I can't access the hardrive at all, so how would I be able to pull any of the files? You can use this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817392032&nm_mc=OTC-Froogle&cm_mmc=OTC-Froogle-_-External+Enclosure-_-Vantec-_-17392032

Take the HDD out, put it into an enclosure, and then plug the enclosure into a working PC to salvage the files.hypothetically could i use my windows 7 os for his computer? mines a dell but i dont think that would matter in this case.A Dell Win7 DVD will not work on an Acer...
You would be asking for alot of headaches...

Go to the websites of the manufacturers of the devices in question. If you can't find drivers it's possible they don't support Windows 7. Did you run the W7 upgrade advisor before installing it?DOWNLOAD System Information for Windows: http://www.gtopala.com/siw-download.html to your Desktop.

Nice Hello. For the Multimedia Drivers, you can use the available setup on Dell website for windows xp. They work.

For the video, download de HP driver for Intel Video Card sp34749.exe

Run the setup so it unzips the driver to the regular HP path c:\swsetup\sp34749

The setup will tell you a fail message because it was designed for windows vista. Click OK.

Go to the device manager and do a manual driver update and go to this path: c:\swsetup\sp34749\graphics and it will successfully update your video card driver.

Solve : Operation Aborted?

Answer»

I was wondering why SOMETIMES I try to go into a website and it says "Internet Explorer cant open the website-Operation Aborted". This happens sometimes and it never happened before. What have you done recently to your PC?
Can you use another browser?
You can go to www.mywot.com and check to see if the web site you want is a bad site.
Don't go to bad sites. They really can mess with your PC in a bad way. If that was the PROBLEM, be glad you found out.

But if that is not the problem, come back here with a list of good sites you can not enter, and let others check them out.Hi,
The easiest way for you to fix the problem is to upgrade to Internet Explorer 8.
This problem no longer occurs in Internet Explorer 8.

I still get "Operation Aborted" on some of the websites I go to. What should I do next? Should I upgrade to IE 8 or 9? I wont lose my browsing history, will I? Im still getting "Operation Aborted" sometimes. If I upgrade to IE 8 or 9 will I lose my browsing history. I ask this because I will save my files and what not instead of upgrading and losing everything which I have done before. And you're sure it's not the site being down. . . . ?No, all the sites are ok. It just happens sometimes on good websites.I've never seen the operation aborted message visiting a website...
This leads me to belive it's something on your end.

Solve : Operating system not found and media test failure, Vista 7?

Answer»

I've tried trouble shooting with the various suggestions, and none have worked since I don't have a CD Rom any longer. When I check the BIOS settings, there isn't a hard disk listed (it says none). It won't let me highlight on the Hard Disk in the Phoenix Bios Setup Utility. My son got a hold of my computer today, and I am so worried I've lost all the date on this computer. These are the messages: PXE-E61 Media TEST failure, check cable, PXE-MOF, Exiting PXE Rom, Operating system not found. I am not sure how much sense I'm making; I'm new to this. HELP!!!Those messages could mostly mean that you need to reseat INTERNAL components on your mobo and making sure they are well connected. The last two messages I could recall were the RAM modules and the other one on a WIRELESS network card, both on LAPTOPS. But check also all cables loose or damaged. Since the Hard drive is not detected, it might be another issue as posting previous events that led to this state would help determine the problem.

Solve : Installing RealRead Viewer with Vista Business x64 (IE security warning)?

Answer»

I'm trying to view a document from NFPA (National Fire Prevention Association) in order to verify electrical standard codes for my wiring on an industrial machine installation I'm doing at work. But in order to view the document it prompts me to install RealRead Viewer. When I try to install the RealRead software I get the dialog box attached:
Is this an IE issue or Vista issue? Is RealRead a trustworthy installation (I would think it is)? What do I do to bypass this security block?
Seems like I've had to bypass this issue before with Vista but I can't remember what I did to make it work.

As always, thanks a ton for any help.

From the image security warning : Windows has blocked this software.... see this Link.
You should have the correct and install only one Java version which is on the latest version 7.

Thanks jason2074!
I got it working now. First I tried changing my IE security settings for Java per instructions in your link but still no joy. I still got the results shown in attachment 1 and 2.
When I clicked the link ("For JVM click here") in order to download the latest Java it displayed v6 update 29 (from the Java website).
When I investigated further I found that v7 is not yet available from the Java wesite, but it is available from the Oracle website.
Also, the Java v7 I had installed was X64 but my IE9 browser is x86.
So I uninstalled both v6 update 29, and v7 x64. Then installed v7 x86 from the Oracle website and presto! The RealRead document opens fine now. And I have only 1 Java installation.
Thanks again!

Uninstalling v6 update 29 really wasn't necessary, was it? You said you could read the documents fine after installing v6 update 29. These Java updates automatically come through for most users. Therefore, most users do not need to take manual action to go out and find the latest version; Java will automatically alert them to available updates and they can then download and install the updates to Java.

Also, installing an update to Java, it will normally automatically remove the older version. This has not always been the case; going back a few years ago, installing updates would CAUSE multiple instances of Java installed and the user had to remove the older version(s). But then, Oracle changed that so that installing an update automatically removes the previous version. Quote from: soybean on November 01, 2011, 08:00:22 AM
Uninstalling v6 update 29 really wasn't necessary, was it? You said you could read the documents fine after installing v6 update 29.

No it was not, although I did want to install the latest version while I was at it for security. The original problem was me installing Java v7 x64 because I was thinking of my 64 bit OS, rather than installing x86 to match my x86 IE browser - my bad.

But I have a new issue with the v7 installation related to your post:

With v6 u29, I had a Java Icon in the control panel. Now, with v7 installed I attempted to access Java through the control panel to be sure automatic updates is enabled but there is no Java icon there now. And I don't see how to access it via C\program files (x86)\java\jre7
When I open the jre7 file (shown in attachment) I don't know what to do next.

How do I access the Java information now?

[regaining space - attachment deleted by admin]My control panel

[regaining space - attachment deleted by admin]Never mind. I found it via clicking on the "View 32 bit control panel ITEMS" icon. I never noticed that before.

Solve : Windows 7 refuses to boot?

Answer»

My uncle has an acer aspire laptop which wont boot up normally, no logo no loading BAR, just "starting windows" text. And sometimes it would just show a black screen for like hours, showing no signs of booting. Tried safe mode, windows last successful boot (advanced), memory test, pretty much everything. When I tried safe mode, it would show the black screen loading the files from folder system32, but after like loading 5 or so files, it would stop and not do anything else, just showing that same screen. I just want to know if this is a hardware problem or not.Quote

I just want to know if this is a hardware problem or not.
Hard to say. You should have an install DVD for Windows 7. This is not always included by the maker of the computer. The install DVD can also FIX boot errors with Windows 7. It is not exactly a hardware problem, but hardware MIGHT be implicated. A hardware glitch corrupted a file and Windows tries to fix it and in not able to repair it 'on the fly', so to speak. So you boot from the DVD and do the repair work.
Read this:

System recovery options can help you repair Windows if a serious error occurs. To use system recovery options, you'll need a Windows installation disc or access to the recovery options provided by your computer manufacturer. If you don't have either of those choices, you can create a system repair disc to access system recovery options.

Solve : Terribly slow computer?

Answer»

Hi!
I have a problem with my HP a6230 computer (Windows Vista Home Edition SP 1).
I was installing updates a few days ago, and accidentally turned the PC off during the installation process.
Now it is really slow, I have to wait a couple of minutes just for icons to appear, the computer crashes whenever I try to open any program.
I cannot do anything. It works fine in Safe Mode, though.
Hard drive makes strange, repetitive noises.
I've scanned the PC - no malware was found.
I think my hard disk USES PIO mode, is there a way to change it to DMA? I can't do it in Safe Mode.

Thanks in advance,
ByteYou can try to do a 'SYSTEM restore'. That will revert back to the way the computer was before you started the UPDATE. Every time Vista starts an update it sets a restore point.

Type in 'System restore' in the search box and you should SEE it there. If in case no restore point or was turned off, try this http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/88009-advanced-boot-options.html
and choose Last known good configuration. Thanks for your replies, but neither System Restore nor last known good configuration solved my problem.
Any more ideas? The reason the PC is slow is directly related to PIO mode...
If Windows detects 4 or 5 (cant remember which ) read/write errors it drops the HDD down to PIO mode.
I would DLoad the Free diagnostics from the HDD manuf. site ASAP and run it to check the health of the drive...

Solve : Startup repair, new partitions??

Answer»

Hello,

I recently had an issue with booting windows due to a corrupted bootloader. I tried using fixboot and fixmbr, which were only partially sucsessful. The first failed, citing an error about "not a recognized FILESYSTEM" chkdsk also failed with the /f parameter, but worked fine without it (read only mode).

Basically, the file system was fine. I used the automatic repair option as a last resort, and it worked! Now, the only issue is, instead of having two partions, (a main and a system reserved) I have four. Two "mains" and two system reserved. I've never had these before, and I don't want them. Why were they created and how do I get rid of them while still retaining the ability to boot windows normally (before the issue that required the startup repair).

Thanks for READING,

I just dont want all these unnecesary partitions.. nevermind. I threw caution to the wind and just deleted them. It didnt seem like anything important was on there. Eh, who cares. Solve : Migrate windows install to new SSD??

Answer»

Hello!

I just PURCHASED a new SSD; because of the size (30 GB) I do not have room for anything other than the operating system itself.

Because I like to complicate things (), and I don't want to reinstall windows, I would like to migrate only the windows install itself to the new SSD!

I would like to leave all installed PROGRAMS, files, and Users folders (but not the desktop - that I want on the SSD) on the original Hard drive that windows was originally installed on.

Any help on accomplishing this would be greatly appreciated

Diatech

Edit: I do not want to have two separate windows installs; I don't want to install windows on the SSD and just run the installed programs from the original windows install on the HDD, rather I would like to move the windows install entirely as noted above.

Thanks!
Short answer...can't be done.Couldn't you do it by eliminating virtual memory file, system restore files & some programs to get below the 30GB? This would have to be done on the HD before cloning to the SSD. Virtual memory file shouldn't be kept on an SSD drive.

My Win7-64 is 50+GB, unoptimized, including most bloatware. I don't keep any data on that machine.Quote from: patio on September 18, 2011, 03:32:08 PM

Here is how to lose control of a name, and possibly corrupt wallet.dat:

The killer command was:

The Language Packs are only supported in Windows 7 Ultimate and Windows 7 Enterprise. They will be listed in the Windows Update screen. If you do not have Windows 7 Ultimate you can't use the Language packs.

You may follow this procedure to download and install a Windows 7 language pack:

1. Start Microsoft Update. To do this, click Start, type Microsoft Update in the Start Search box, and then click Microsoft Update in the Programs list.Collapse this imageExpand th

2. Click the optional update links for the language packs.

3. Under the Windows 7 Language Packs category, select the desired language pack.

Note If you install many additional language packs, the disk space and system performance are AFFECTED. In particular, disk space and system performance are affected during servicing operations, such as Service Pack installations. Therefore, we recommend that you only add a language pack to your computer if you will use the language pack.

4. Click OK, and then click Install updates to start the download and installation process.

For more information on how to install language pack, please refer to the article below:

Solve : Stuck between a rock and a hard place....?

Answer»

I have Windows Vista on a client's PC. I have cleared all the rubbish from it (including 10 or so anti-virus programs...) and gotten it up to speed again.
The problem I am facing is this:
When I go to shut down the computer it hangs on the 'Shutting down' screen. I figured it might be some of those c***y little programs that might be lingering. So to kill them properly (not unlike the undead) is to go into msconfig and remove them from from startup and services.
So you're thinking, that's probably it, right? Well, if I touch something in those menus (not sure which might be causing the problem) then the Start button CEASES to work completely. I have tried everything I could find on the INTERNET about it on Google and what have you, but to no avail, including re-enabling those previously disabled programs from msconfig (wierd, right?)
The only solution I could get to work was to do a RESTORE through typing 'rstrui' in command prompt. Then set it back to before I touched the msconfig.
So, you see, I am completely stumped.
I am about to run Malwarebytes and AVG to see if there any Gremlings in the system.
If anyone can shed some light on the subject, that would be great.
Thanks for reading,
LukeUpdate:

I have ran a Malwarebytes scan which found 107 problems. After removing these problems and restarting, the start button has died again. After restarting again, the computer does, eventually, shut down.
Thoughts, people?

In ADDITION, the computer looks like a self build from a shop or some kid. It is running Vista-64 bit with Service PACK 2.
I am debating a fresh windows install, but with it not being my computer I'm not comfortable with how that might go down, considering there is 4 user accounts which would probably take quite a bit of covering up. Can I be bothered? Not really.
I'll keep you posted if anything changes.
Thanks,

My computer was GIVEN to me, and it was from a school district. It has a group POLICY and i THINK its restricting a lot of access to things i am trying to DOWNLOAD and update on my PC. I am now using it at home and no longer want the group policy or all the restrictions on my PC. I am running windows 7 enterprise. I think that if i disable the group policy it might help but I'm not sure. if anyone could help, it would be greatly appreciated. Best thing and 1st thing to do with a used PC is a clean WIPE and a re-install...

Solve : My Computer is fixed....sort of?

Answer»

I was the person who posted about how Windows would freeze up all the time and I would have no sound coming out of Realplayer etc. Well, heres an update. I have sound but I have to start in Realplayer to get it, otherwise, there is no sound. Now as far as Windows goes, what I did was a couple of things. First, I disabled a few add-ons which helped me out. Second, I upgraded internet explorer from IE 8 to IE 9. When I did those two things, my computer was fixed or so I thought.

The real only problem now is that everyday Windows is telling me to install new updates and whether I should restart the computer in 10 mins, 1 hr. or 4 hrs. Well everytime I try to install new updates, it says that I failed. Windows couldnt install the updates. This happens EVERYDAY !!! Also the microsoft fix-it center which helped me with the computer problems I mentioned above doesnt open. What should I do?Also, I should point out that some of my history is gone from today as well and I dont know why. Its also freezing a little bit but not as bad as before. Post some of the error description/KB codes that were not able to update. Post ALL your current protections softwares installed(scanner, firewall, antivirus, malware/spyware). http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-vista/Troubleshoot-problems-with-installing-updatesI'll do my BEST because Im not a computer whiz. I have Malware Bytes Anti-Malware. I also have Norton Security Suite. I use the Norton Firewall to protect my computer. Theres a lot here but here are some of them:

Update for Windows Vista (KB2607712)
Security Update for Windows Vista (KB2536276)
Update ROLLUP for ActiveX Killbits for Windows Vista (KB2570791)
Update for Windows Vista (KB2570791)
Update for Windows Mail Junk E-Mail Filter (Aug.2011) (KB905866)
Update for Windows Vista (KB2563227)
Security Update for Microsoft.NET Framework 2.0 SP2
Security Update for Windows Vista (KB2556532)
Security Update for Windows Vista (KB2563894)

Those are some of the updates that when I try to install them, they dont work. It says to install, so I do. I restart the computer and it says the updates were not configured and windows couldnt install the updates. Have you tried disabling Norton Firewall protection and use Windows Firewall instead and then re-doing failed updates. You might wanna check if both firewalls are enabled at the same time when this error OCCURED or disabling any real-time protection/scanners from your antivirus first.I tried disabling Norton Firewall for 15 mins. and used Windows Firewall but it was no dice. The updates still are not installed RIGHT. Also, thanks to me, windows defender is gone. Everytime I try to open up Windows Defender it says "Application failed to initialize 0x80070006. The handle is invalid." What does that mean? Maybe thats the reason why the updates are not working?Check your startup services for Windows Update(Automatic) and Windows Installer(Manual)
1.Click Start and type services.msc, hit Enter on Search programs and files box
2.Look for Windows Update and Windows Installer startup services type as posted above.
3.If one or both are different from the default, double-click and change as suggested and hit Apply.
Now try again updating by Windows update. If the same error occured, try manually downloading the updates.

Ok, I did what you told me but I have a question. Heres what happened when I looked up Windows Update and Windows Installer. For Windows Update, I changed the startup type to manual. Solve : Lost pictures??

I was running windows vista on my computer when it crashed. I don't have a windows vista cd to fix it so all I can do is install a new system. I want to know if there is a way for me to get my pictures off of the computer before I install a new operating system. I have an older computer that I have an xp disc for so I was going to install windows xp on the one that has crashed but I want my pictures first. I have checked prices around here and everyone is wanting to charge me 200 plus dollars to get my pictures back for me. Is there a way I can don it at home myself? Please help they are all pictures of my ids growing up!!If you have access to a SECOND computer you simply need to slave the drive to that computer. Alternatively, you can install XP to a NEW location on the existing drive, grab the pictures, then FORMAT and reinstall from scratch.

Solve : displays running together?

I'm running Windows Vista 7 and today the print/text is running together and repeating endless times all on top of each other, almost to the point of solid blocks rather than print. Sometimes it SHOWS up that way when I click on an e-mail or web site, all of the time it happens when I scroll down. Sometimes it clears up by itself but not all the time.1. There is no such thing as Windows Vista 7. It's either Windows Vista or Windows 7.
2. Your EXPLANATION sounds like a graphics problem of some kind. If hardware related, could be graphics card or monitor, cause is unknown. If software related, could be graphics driver.

Dell Service Tag 7T21XG1

System Configuration

Looks like 2G of RAM with onboard video which uses some of the 2GB RAM for the video.

Things to check for:
1. Reinstall video driver. DOWNLOAD & install from 1st link provided.
2. Overheating. Get the right version for your OS (32 or 64) http://www.hwinfo.com/. Monitor the temps while using.
3. Best to open the case & look for dust build-up on the CPU FAN, etc.
4. If temps OK, test the RAM with MemTest. http://www.memtest.org/Thanks very much - will try all.You probably should read through the Dell™ XPS™ 210 Service Manual to see how to remove the cover. You can view it online or download and print it out.

BTW, Dell does not list the OS shipped. It was shipped 7/28/2008.
You will have to get the proper graphics driver for Win7, either 32 or 64. It won't be on the Dell link, will have to get it from Intel.

The control panel of the videocard ''says'' that the HDMI's sound is activated but it isn't! Yes, I'm sure.Connect the SPDIF to your onboard sound/soundcard as specified audio input for your HDMI.
http://nvidia.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/2593From jason's last link when i was doing the same type of connection i did this and it supplied good sound. But of course as is stated it INVOLVES an additional cable beyond the HDMI cable.
1) Passing audio directly from your analog onboard or add-in sound controller to your HDTV analog audio input. This method is fairly simple and involves using a 3.5mm to RCA stereo audio cable. The 3.5mm connection goes into your sound card while the other end goes to your HDTV's RCA input (some HDTVs may use a 3.5mm analog audio input instead of an RCA input in which case you would need a 3.5mm to 3.5mm cable instead). This method is recommended for NVIDIA GeForce FX, GeForce 6, GeForce 7 series or GeForce 8 series GPUs (i.e. GeForce 6600, GeForce 7900GT)
truenorthThanks for help guys Nice to see that apparently you have solved your sound issue. For the benefit of others that may read this thread what was it that solved your problem? truenorth

Edited by Allan to remove empty spaceYour VERSION of Outlook is old and I don't know how settings in it COMPARE to newer versions. I have Office 2003 on a Win XP SYSTEM. Where, exactly, in the Outlook 2000 menu structure is "Remote procedure Call" found?

You could try using the free email clients from Microsoft for Vista and 7. You already have the one with Vista. It's Windows Mail. Win 7 has no built-in email client but you can DOWNLOAD the free Windows Live Mail. I have Windows Live Mail on another computer and I could never get it to handle more than 1 email address. Remote procedure call is in services.msc and it is what allows passwords to be saved. I have ALWAYS used Outlook 2000 and it has always worked just fine. Now I have two computers that keep asking for a password. I keep my email on one computer and forward to myself important stuff. Now there is no sense in having two computers.

Why, because of the password issue? That makes no sense. You either have a need to get your email on two computers or you don't.

No, it is entirely and completely unrelated to your issue.

Solve : Canon IP 4700 fault?

Answer»

Hello,

I have used my Canon IP4700 printer satisfactorily for approx 2years in conjunction with Win7 (64 bit), IE9, Firefox7.

Yesterday I was printing a 5 page document and after 3 pages were printed it stopped and I have been unable to print any full pages since.

Only about half a page is printed of any document. Printer test page is OK. Preview shows all the document page.

Uninstalled and reinstalled the program. Printer indicates it is on line and ready to print. Ran the diagnosis and fault program all to no avail.

No ERROR messages.

Any suggestion appreciated.

Thanks - Woodie. It's an (as low as) $68 (online) printer that is a 2 years old model. The INK must cost nearly as much. Get another printer. I am not just saying this, I had an IP4200 and I ditched it when it was working fine! I bought a black and white laser printer (Canon) for less than the price of a SET of ink cartridges for the IP4200. I take my color shots on a pendrive to a photo store. I guess you could do an internal clean and check rollers etc for sticky stuff. When you say half a page do you mean half vertically or half horizontally or is it patchy? I don't recommend using power saving features on a desktop system. Except for the monitor at any rate. While hibernation and sleep work perfectly for some, they simply don't work properly for others. Believe it or not, Microsoft never really PERFECTED either for all systems. Instead of either I suggest setting your hd and display to power down after a defined period of inactivity. It will work well and you and your system will both be happy.

Solve : Win 7 Boot issues?

Answer»

Hi

I recently tried to recover my hard drive using a Norton Ghost disk image. Everything appears to go well during the recovery, but the hard drive won't boot, saying that the boot manager was missing. I have tried several different recovery configuration options within NG with the hope that it would fix the problem. No joy. I have also tried using the Microsoft DISKPART to select a partition, set it active, and assign a disk letter. No joy. Next i used Microsoft BOOTSECT with the /NT60 and /MBR switches to try and repair the boot FILES. Still no joy.

Now I'm trying to install a fresh copy of Win7 and it fails at the screen where you select the drive/partition to install the OS. The error message says there is no system partition for the OS. Nothing has worked. Before I tear out my last few hairs, is there someone who has run into this before and can provide some guidance?

My PC configuration:
MB - Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD3R
CPU - Intel i7 930
RAM - 6GB
VID - ATI 5770
HD - Western Digital 1TB black

Which version of Norton Ghost? -NG
Had you done a proof of performance test on NG?
Suppose you did not. I will assume you never verified NG with Windows 7ona a 1 TB drive. Then maybe NG is at fault. Maybe not. (I BELIEVE it is at fault, but I don't know which version you have.)

You might find one of your older smeller hard drives and use it to install Windows 7 64 bit. I

f that works, the proves your system is apparently OK. The problem MUST be Norton or the 1TB drive. Prove it.

Next try making a 'clone' using the Norton Ghost and a older smaller Hard Drive. If that works, then It must be NG does not do huge drives. If it does not work at all, then it could be NG can not even do Windows 7 any way.

Visit www.acronis.com and note they have a Windows 7 Clone utility Which implies that making a clone of Windows 7 is not always possible with older clone software. Was the original image of Ghost from a dual-boot setup ? ?
If not ignore that scenario...
Was it an OEM Ghost image from another PC.? ? If so that would explain why it was unsuccsessful...

At any rate since you are MOVING on to a clean Win7 install...boot to the Win7 DVD...Delete and re-create the C" partition...because it's looking at something it doesn't recognise...
Format the newly created partition NTFS and continue with the Win7 setup and you should be good to go...One of the most frustrating to happen on your computer is Windows Boot problems. These problems can range from receiving an error message that won't go away (usually a.dll or.exe related error) to problems that stop your computer from complete booting up at all. Solve : Start-up error?

Answer»

I installed an update for Steam and my computer crashed, since then I'm unable to restart outside of Safe-Mode. Trying to start normally gets me to the Windows logo screen but then the system restarts before I see the desktop.

I have no system restore points because I did a disk-cleanup a COUPLE of weeks ago (and Microsoft didn't think I'd need EVEN one of those restore files.)

I think the timing with the Steam update is quite coincidental since Steam runs fine from Safe Mode.

Just to confuse matters further (and probably get me zero help as a result) - I'm running Windows 7 through Bootcamp on a Mac (though I don't think it's a hardware ISSUE since OSX still loads fine)

How would I diagnose what's causing the crash (and FIX it)?An awful lot of variables here...
Steam...which can be dodgy at best...
BootCamp...see above
Safemode not working properly...

Think i'll take a pass on this one.

BTW ...Diskclean does not remove restore points unless you tell it to...so don't blame MS.

So, I'm getting the IMPRESSION I can't create a volume without a disk and I can't add a disk without a volume. If anyone can help me out with this I would be very grateful.Wait... the windows 7 install disc should have a partition tool...? why are you using diskpart?
http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/52291-partition-hard-drive-windows-7-install.htmlThanks for the quick reply.

During the installation of Windows 7, on the part where it's titled "Where do you want to install Windows?" there are no longer any drives (C: and D:, the ones I formatted) and the "New" option which I'd assume would create a new drive is greyed out and unclickable. Not sure where to go from here. You mean partitions-I highly doubt you have 2 separate hard drives in your laptop.
Your laptop isn't detecting your hard drive properly.... would it be possible to take the HDD out and pop it into another computer?
Have you tried other installation disks of other operating systems to see if they detect your HDD?
Can you go into your BIOS to see if your HDD is recognized?Yes, sorry for my terminology. I formatted my 'partitions' and now my entire hdd isn't showing up in the install. It appears not to be showing up in my BIOS either. I'm looking at the boot order and instead of a detailed description of my hdd, it simply says: Notebook Hard Drive. I suppose I could take it out but I'm not really sure how easy it would be since it's a laptop instead of desktop. Also, I find it odd that it suddenly happened when I formatted. The problem would imply my hdd got physically disconnected (which is unlikely considering the situation)

How should I proceed?A physical disconnection is unlikely.

Your computer is not recognizing the hard drive properly...
Try another installation disc (i.e. Windows XP, Ubuntu, etc) to see if it is the Windows 7 install disc causing the problem(unlikely, but give it a go.)

If all else fails I'd SAY you should take the hard drive out. Taking the HDD out should be very simple-laptop HDDs slide into a port on the motherboard-you don't have to take the entire motherboard out. Thanks so much for the help transfusion. I tried installing Ubuntu, which resulted in the same thing (in that there were no partitions) but after browsing the forums, the community SUGGESTED loading the Live CD so I could go into the OS and access the console, from there I was able to create the drive, partitions, and format them.

Appreciate it, mate.

Solve : I Got my Files Back!!!!!?

Answer»

Well, put this in believe it or not but I got my files back!!! I thought my files and videos and documents were gone forever. Then it hit me as I was talking to the Norton Security Virus people. See, I had called them because I thought I had saved my files on Norton. Well, that was no dice. But as I was looking for my files I noticed something. I kept seeing folders with backup files or backup zip files with dates on them. In other words, the folders would say "backup files 6-24-11" or something like that. Then I thought, why would there be folders created and nothing in them. So, I looked some more and found out that I did back the files after all. As a matter of fact, I backed the files up a lot!! The most important thing that there back. Now, I have to put my files in order and find all the documents etc. but I got them back. The browsing history is gone but I think if I like a webpage I will just add it to my favorites. I used to do that and just stopped for some reason.
But the main thing is that the files are back. Never heard of someone using Browsing History instead of Favorites. Now it EXPLAINS why it was important to you. As for the way you do backups, whatever works for you. Now, make sure you backup your Favorites. Don't know if Norton does that. Please forgive my ignorance on this subject but isn't the best way to back-up your PC via to disc? I use the Windows Vista 'Backup Status and Configuration' tool located in 'Accesories > System Tools' which has the options for "Backup Files" or "Complete PC Backup".
I have a disc burned with this but I have never had an occasion to need it.
Do I need to use a different backup source, such as Norton ect?

Jack Catalano, I don't mean to hijack your thread. I'm just asking in case this would be a better option for you rather than Norton ect?

What am I missing here?

MikeOop's, I found your other thread concerning this issue.
Now I understand this thread a little better. I didn't know you started a new thread on this same subject.

THIS is a problem.

Whenever you ADOPT a backup strategy, you need to know how to use it if the occasion ever arises, and you need to be sure it will work. The best way to do that is to actually proceed through a restore operation; make a backup, and then immediately restore from that backup, for example. That way you at least have gone through that process and don't have to nervously fumble through it when you need it. This is actually a common 'problem'... people will learn how to go through only half of the backup process; restoration is just as crucial to understand as the creation itself, and testing the backup is important because for all you know they could be faulty for some reason, and that would help you discover the problem while you still have that data and can remake the backup rather than after you've lost it and are trying to restore it.

Personally my "backup" strategy basically consists of a scheduled "Powerarchiver backup" which creates a .7z compressed file consisting of the folders that contain my irreplacable stuff. Programs can be reinstalled and settings can be changed to those programs. As far as I'm concerned I'd much rather spend a few hours reinstalling windows and my other software, and reconfiguring programs/options that spending several months rewriting the source to programs I lose (which has happened before, thus why I now backup).

And I can't use a image-based backup, (where you say restore a disk image) because my main drive is a 75% full 750GB drive and the largest external I have for storage is 500GB and is also full, so I'd have nowhere to put it. (I do have DVDs to burn through but that would be an awful lot of discs and losing a single one I wouldn't be able to restore.

So I just archive the various 7z files away on externals.Good point BC. I'll SCHEDULE the time to test my backup asap. It's a bit inconvenient to have to "spend a few hours reinstalling windows and my other software, and reconfiguring programs/options", but I agree it's better than loosing everything in the future due to faulty backup disc or proceedure.

I suppose I'll need $22.95. They don't have a free version available do they?

I do have a 320Gb usb external drive that my backup should fit on.

There is a free version, but it was back when the program was freeware (PowerArchiver 2001). Personally I didn't really buy it for the backup script ability, I bought it because I think it's the best archiving tool, and I cannot stand the way the built-in zip support for windows works.

my secondary internal drive is 80% full as well. It's 1.5TB LET me ask you guys one more thing. Should upgrade my internet explorer? When my computer came back from the eRecovery it went back to Internet Explorer 7. Should go back to where I was before which was IE 9? Im thinking I should because some of the websites that Ive gone on are not in the browsing history and sometimes a perfectly good website that I had no trouble getting on the website before, will now say that "Internet Explorer cant get into the site" or something like that and then it says "Operation Aborted". Im assuming that I should upgrade my Internet Explorer. Yes. Get all of your updates.

Yes. Get all of your updates.
Start > All Programs > Windows Update

Should I upgrade to IE 9? I say that because when do what you told me and go to Start, All Programs and Windows Update, some of the updates wont install. It keeps saying "Try Again". What should I do?IE8 is supported for WinXP, IE8 & IE9 is supported for WinVista & Win7.
You might want to try Firefox. Most that use it, like it. Firefox doesn't replace IE, but you have the option of deciding which you want as the Default browser. You still need IE for Microsoft Updates. You know, Ive tried Firefox before and I really didnt like it. I think I just might upgrade to IE 9. And, yes, I will sound like a broken record for saying this, and people might get mad at me, so I apologize in advance, but if I upgrade to IE9, will I lose my browsing history?Ok, your not going to believe this. You know why some of my browsing history is gone? Because it left to go to another computer!! In other words, Im logged in to 2 different computers!!! When I start up my computer, I now I can choose between two different log in names. I have one named Jack and another named Jack Catalano. The reason why my browsing history "disappeared" was because when I said that, I used the log in name Jack Catalano and those history files were not on there. But when I used the name Jack, like Im using now, my history files are there.

Dont even ask how I have two different log in names.Quote from: Jack Catalano on October 14, 2011, 08:43:14 PM

I'm not as knowledgable about computers as the OTHERS that have replied to you in this thread, but concerning your last post, I would maybe suggest looking in the 'user accounts' tab of your 'control panel' to see if you have multiple user accounts. This may not be related to your issue, but it wouldn't hurt to check it.
Did you ever get "Windows Update" to run as JJ 3000 suggested without that error: Quote from: Jack Catalano
"Try Again".
?Well, I think I do have 2 user accounts. I dont how that happened. But I dont want to start transferring files and losing my history again etc. Btw, lectrocrew, you said you were not as knowledgable? Believe me, compared to me, you are a genius!!

Also, I dont even know if I followed JJ 3000 but my computer hasnt said that it needs to install windows updates. I do have a question.

How come some websites say that "Windows Internet Explorer cant open the website, Operation Aborted"?
Also, twitter uses an https in its website, so it would be https://www.twitter.com. But I get into Twitter and the entire bar where the website is highlighted in light green and its sometimes slow trying to read the tweets.
