Solve : Mp3 player and windows media player?

Answer»

I have a sansa clip mp3 which keeps all my music on it. I don't want to put the music onto my computer hard drive because I don't want to USE up the space. So when I listen to music whilst I'm on my laptop I plug in the mp3 player via usb and play the songs through windows media player.

This works but not how I would like it to.

If I open up windows media player with the device connected, I can view the device is connected on the left hand pane where it says Library, music, videos, pictures it also says Sansa clip. I can click on the device and it opens up and I can browse through the music as if it was an ordinary library on wmp but I can't play any of the songs. I can see the songs but when I click to play them, nothing happens.

Up until know, I've been opening the mp3 USING autoplay and play using windows media player. In this case I get all the songs in the right pane under the play tab of the play/burn/sync categories and I can browse the songs under this playlist but this is not ideal for searching songs. I want the songs to be playable in the main middle pane.

I hope I have been CLEAR.
Thanks. After years of using Windows, I have given up on Windows Media Player.
My choice is classic WINAMP. Free, and it asks if you want to do the library. Just say no. You can play all the songs on your MP3 player with WinAmp.
http://www.winamp.com/
Do not buy anything. Do not use the add-ons. Ignore the free other stuff. Just download the free WinAmp player. Works good .
Quote

. I want the songs to be playable in the main middle pane.
There is a folder location for saving or copy/pasting music files to achieve this task. Usually it is in the Users folder/Public/Sample Music. No removable device of music files contents is automatically ADDED to the library or playlist. They should be residing in the Hard drive specified location on WMP. Even if you use Winamp and create a playlist, the location should not be removed as Windows looks for the path of the saved items when using the saved contents.

Solve : Missing 75gb on Windows 7 with RAID0?

Answer»

So I've never posted on here before, but my dad has spoke highly of these forums so I thought I'd toss an interesting problem at you. First of all my computer info as detailed as I can get is as followed:

I'm running Windows 7 Professional with files on two 74.5gb WD Raptor drives, but the boot sector is actually on a 500gb Toshiba drive. I'm using an ASUS Striker II Extreme motherboard with an e8400+ core 2 duo processor and 8gb of ram (so yes, it's 64-bit windows). I assume the video card and the power supply etc aren't going to be useful, but they're sufficient. I run RAID0 between the Raptors through the BIOS for a quicker gaming drive to put the more speed intensive data on, while storing the more general stuff on the larger 500gb spindisk.

The problem: Ever since I got Windows 7 64-bit installed on the Raptors there have been space problems. It seems like Windows is really confused and treats it more like a RAID1 configuration, but yet says that I've got 138.5gb instead of 74.5gb. It's hard to explain, but the more information I get on the drive, the more information is "HIDDEN" from me. I can go into my folder settings and set to show everything including things like the virtual memory file and hibernation etc, but selecting everything on the Raptors will only show 74.5gb of data, yet when i right click on it and go to properties it shows that almost the full 138.5 has been used. It wasn't such a problem until I ran into the space limitation, now I'm looking to cash in my other 74.5gb.

Can anyone explain to me why Windows seems to be confusing the size of my RAID configuration? Everything before windows seems to be set up correct, and it SEEMS correct until looking closely. When I go to disk manager under Windows there's only one drive listed for the RAIDs, so it seems to be keeping windows in the dark about there even being a RAID, which is what I prefer, but for some reason all of these problems are emerging. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks in advance for any leads!Quote

but the boot sector is actually on a 500gb Toshiba drive

Why?

Quote
yet when i right click on it and go to properties it shows that almost the full 138.5 has been used.

Download TreeSize
http://www.jam-software.com/freeware/
See if that can tell you what's eating up all that space. The reason I've got the boot sector off of the RAID is because for some reason the boot sector doesn't work on them. I've tried it quite a few times and it never works without keeping the windows disk inside constantly. I decided after over 5 installs to just go with the easier alternative, which is to install it on the RAID and then MOVE the boot sector to the Hitachi (forgot it's Hitachi not Toshiba, but it's just a minor detail) drive.

Alright, after running TreeSize it comes as saying that 92,144.7 MB is used for "System Volume Information", 26,320 for Windows, the rest are divided with games, users and such.I'm starting to find a lot of help sites on this now that I know it's from system volume information, thanks for the help! I'm still searching, but I'll let you know when I've found the solution with a link. Feel free to drop in some of your own ADVICE if you think it'll help.Well I looked around and my problem didn't seem to match up with others. What I narrowed it down to is over-archiving. Most likely what happened is that I searched my entire computer for some file that I forgot where I put and clicked the little thing that came up "make future searches quicker." I'm not positive about this, but that's the only explaination for "archive folder and subfolders for quicker searching" being checked on EVERYTHING. Right now the problem I'm running into is that when I apply the settings to remove the archiving I get admin warnings on every single file. I guess on 64-bit 7 it's not enough to be an administrator. It's kind of annoying. Any CLUE how to force these settings to take hold?Click start and type

cleanmgr

into the search box and press enter.

Select your drive's letter from the list and click OK.
Click on clean up system files. This will run the cleanup with elevated privileges. Click the More Options tab. Now click on Clean up under system restore and shadow copies and click OK.

See if that gets some of your drive space back.I went ahead and did that. Usually I use CCleaner instead of the windows utility, but neither of them get more than a few MB. I've already tried the shadow-copy thing and setting it to use a maximum of 5% of the hard drive, but still I'm left with only 80mb of space. I removed the archive thing from as many files as i could and it's still huge, perhaps the shadowcopy thing really is the problem, but nothing I do seems to eliminate it, even the direct commands under an elevated cmd prompt.

Even after going over the instructions with a fine-tooth comb nothing seems to raise my free space to anything over 100mb.You deleted all but the most recent restore point and the System Volume Information is still taking up 92,144.7 MB?Well the restore points were already disabled so I was trying to find space where there was none. I thought indexing would eliminate some of the clutter, but it remains at 92,144.7 as reported by treesize free. Even after a restart. I'm honestly not sure what to even try at this point. I've gone through System restores, Eliminating Indexes and ARCHIVES, and clearing everything that windows cleanup utility will allow me to. I'm starting to think it's a problem with one of my installed programs leaking, but the files are of the windows variety. I'll get you an example of one of them:

The biggest one is called {8417858a-f9b3-11df-8701-001fc63e3bd6}{3808876b-c176-4e48-b7ae-04046e6cc752} and it's described as a system file. 3.53gb. The rest are smaller, but there's 284 of them. It's pretty ridiculous in general. The system volume information alone is taking up 63% of my hard drive. I wish it could have at least affected a less important hard drive I've got 830gb to spare and it's taking up the most valuable space.Bump!

Hoping to get some fresh help please.

Solve : how to zip and mailing large files?

Answer»

Just like the ad says "you got this nice camcorder but you find out you can't send anything over 25mb." Can you zip it and send that way? and if so I don't see how to zip a file. I see there are several programs for sending large files but they want money. I'm using Win 7. Thx!Sending large files can be done for free with file hosting sites such as http://www.sendspace.com.

You can also use HFS(HttpFileServer) to use your computer to share files, so when you give your friends the link, they will be downloading the file straight off your hard drive.
http://www.rejetto.com/hfs/
How large is the file you are trying to send? zipping a file will not make large size decreases...zip compression on vid files will not make them MUCH smaller...
Use a hosting site as suggested above...or there are file-splitter apps...but both people would have to have them installed. You can use zip or rar archivers to make split archives where each portion can be less than a size limit. They can be sent one at a time and the file extracted once they have all arrived.

The problem in trying to zip a video file is that most are already compressed (unless it is in RAW format) so you are trying to compressed an already compressed file.Quote from: rthompson80819 on October 10, 2011, 03:19:24 PM

The problem in trying to zip a video file is that most are already compressed (unless it is in RAW format) so you are trying to compressed an already compressed file.

You are missing the point. When SPLITTING a large video file using a zip or rar archiver application, whether it is WinZip, WinRAR, 7-zip, or whatever, you are not SEEKING to reduce the total data size, because as you say, practical video files are compressed already. You want the file to be split. You choose a compression setting of zero. With WinRAR and 7-zip this is called "store". WinZip calls it "no compression". The archiver app does not have to bust a gut and waste cpu cycles and take a very long time trying (and failing) to compress the video, but you get the data split into chunks. MANY videos e.g. DVD rips are split this way for distribution on Usenet.

You are missing the point.

No ST, you missed my point. The OP wanted to zip video files. Everyone else either said it can't be done or offered work arounds. I told the OP why you couldn't zip video files.Quote from: rthompson80819 on October 10, 2011, 04:29:51 PM
The OP wanted to zip video files.

because...

Quote from: The OP
you find out you can't send anything over 25mb." Can you zip it and send that way?

The OP asked if using zip would get around a problem they described. Send... over 25 mb... From these words I believe the OP has hit some kind of email attachment maximum size ISSUE, and that the OP has heard of using a ZIP archiver to get around that, in which case it is you who have missed the point.
yousendit.comI have heard this misconception before, that zipping will reduce file size. Well, not in all cases. Specially video that is already in compressed format like mp4 etc. I would recommend either setup your own HFS [like the other user mentioned] or use commercial tools [such as Binfer, Yousenit] designed to solve these kind of problems. And do not forget the good old postal mail. It has served humanity for quite some time :-)

Some food for thought: I understand that you are looking for free. But free is relative to how you value your time. If you value your hour at $10 and you waste 2 hours searching for something free when you could have bought something for $10 and get the job done then, is the free thing really free?

I won't make you unable to use those, it will just make it so that there is LESS **** to SLOW down your browser. Also do a speed test as someone mentioned earlier. So if I disable yahoo toolbar and yahoo toolbar helper, I can still use yahoo for a search engine?

Also, enable all the other add-ons like Symantec and Norton because I use Norton. RealPlayer is ok though? I dont have to disable that, right?Quote from: Jack Catalano on October 26, 2011, 02:32:48 PM

Yes, you could make Yahoo your default search engine. Here's a reference on how to make such a change: http://www.intowindows.com/how-to-set-google-as-default-search-engine-in-internet-explorer-9/ The reference talks about changing to Google, so just substitute Yahoo for Google in your case.

Do need RealPlayer? I've lived without it for a few YEARS now. I rarely encounter a website with content requiring RealPlayer. Quote from: soybean on October 26, 2011, 03:18:42 PM

I may just do that. Actually it says disable the toolbar not yahoo search engine in general. I should have realized that.

b]Well RealPlayer makes me able to download and play videos. I KIND of need it and Im not sure how to install Windows Media Player. [/b]
You already have Windows Media Player. It's on all Windows systems. Unless you actually like and use them in general Toolbars will use system resources that could be elsewhere...
And i NOTICE you have more than one...if you don't use them regularly get rid of all of them.

Solve : Cannot connect to Internet?

Answer»

Hi all, really hoping you guys can shine some light and lead me out of this dark tunnel.
Basically I cannot get my desktop to connect to internet using WIRED connection.
Here are specifics and steps I have already taken. (Apologize now for LENGTH but been trying for a WHILE now)

Specs:
Intel Core 2 duo
Asus P5n-E SLI mother board
4GB Ram
80GB SATA HD
Windows 7 Home Premium
NiC Card Realteck TRL8139

Problem:
A few weeks ago could go on line no problem, then a day later couldn't connect. (got no connectivity warning)
Figured it might have been an update that caused an issue, but first I reset modem (Verizon FIOS) and switched Cat5 cables and ports, no avail.
Tried a system restore... no good
Tried installing new drivers for NiC card... no good
Disabled NiC card (as it was onboard MB) and installed a new PCI one.. also no good
Tried ipconfig /release /renew received error, I did not have a valid IP address
Finally decided to just wipe computer since I wanted to go to 64bit Win7 anyways hoping a new install would help.
Got new OS loaded. Still no connection
I tried a static IP,... no good
I unchecked the TCP/IV6 protocol (since I read on another forum that had been causing problems)
I reset the TCP/IPv4 back to automatic
I reset the WINSOCK and TCP/IP stack and still no connection
I do however now have a IP address, but still cannot connect to internet.

Any help or suggestions would be great, as I am on the verge of shooting this thing with a sh** gun

Thanks all
Hi I'll try and help here.

For one thing, you always have an IP address no matter what. .

For second, is there a reason why your warning is saying (no connectivity)?

Also try this:

1. try resetting the modem, disconnect the cables, let it sit for 2 mins, then retry. Tried unplugging everything. Even took it from my dads to my house (both of us have fios.
And when I hit ipconfig it didn't show anything for an ip address. Now it does after doing all the THINGS I've listed. no connection warning was down on task bar, and when I open the network sharing center it shows and says no connection.
Did I answer question or just made more confusion? Anything you want me to try our specs want me to post I will.
Thank you very much for taking time
Dear All Here solution of this error.
BROADBAND connection uses dialer to connect to the Internet. This dialer uses Authentication when connection, either by post paid or prepaid. You need username and password when connection using Windows 7. Good thing about Windows 7, it has it's own driver to detect broadband modem when it's plugged in.
When connecting to the Internet and an error 651 pop-up, then there is something wrong with the network. The driver for RAS PPOE file "rasppoe.sys" located on c:\windowssystem32drivers folder is the cause of the problem.

For more information go there site.(remove the star)

OK this is just weird and frustrating. I decided to try and reinstalling the MOBO drivers. So I SHUT down computer and rebooted and entered the BIOS to re enable the onboard LAN card (the one that originally didn't work) since I was going to reinstall the drivers. But before I could reinstall drivers, after the computer rebooted shazam it connect to internet using the original onboard LAN card?!?!?!

At this point am just happy it is working, but really am not sure how or why it is.

Thanks all for the help and suggestions. Will let know if it continues to work or if it goes out again.

Solve : Notebook slows with Internet?

Answer»

First of all sorry for my English I'm not an English native speaker but I will give it try to explain myself. Second Thanks for this forum and Third I hope you can help me...
Problem: for about a month my laptop started to get slow by watching videos on-line (like in youtube)
I also use lovefilm (paid movie website to order DVDs an also watch on-line movies) that was not a problem before but now I can't watch anything
I used to use grooveshark also without any problem but to this point it also takes a lot of time to hear music on-line
Then I realize to open websites was also slower than what it used to be and now it seems my computer is also slowing.
I open the Program files an realize I had something I didn't install (I know I should have written the name but did not, sorry for that) and search a bit it was a malware and people in other forums recommended to remove it with antimalware free tool (which is also already uninstall and no I was to silly and don't have the name). But my laptop keeps running slowly and slower. I got to the internet options a erased all the cache content, that didn't help.
Second Problem is I have no antivirus. I used to have norton but that expired since a good while. I would like to buy the new norton but not really know if that is gonna Help or make it worse, I used to like norton and would like to use again but if you really think it is not good enough I guess I will have to think about it.
I am not very good at technology, I I live in Germany (Laptop is all in German) and my native language is Spanish and hope you help me or say me I should be CALLING a professional and pay for it.
I already thank you.

Here some facts about my laptop:
Windows - Edition
Windows 7 Home Premium
Copyright 2009 Microsoft Corporation
Service PACK 1

System:
Manufacturer: Hewlett Packard
Model: Presario CQ56 Notebook PC
Processor: AMD Athlon(tm) II P320 Dual-Core Processor 2.10GHz.
RAM: 4,00GB (3,47 GB useable)
Systemtype: 64 Bit Operating System
Harddrives: (2): Local Storage (C:) 160 GB free of 215 GB; Recovery (D:) 2,43 GB free of 16,8 GB

I have not any P2P program but before I started using lovefilm watched movies on-line in different sites (but do not used it since 10 months I believe and also not on a regular basis) and my boyfriend used watch the "Bundesliga" on-line on those sites where a lot of poker advertisements is shown but also not on any regular basis I can count with my two hands still.
Sorry if I write too much...
In hope we can solve this,
Luzpaola

!st thing you should do is get an anti-virus app on there...
Avast and AVG are both free downloads...choose Avast.

Then update it and run a full scan...this may take some time since it's been awhile so be patient and do NOT interrupt the scan.
Let it fix all it finds and re-boot.

Next you need to DLoad and install Service Pack 3 for XP...this will also be time consuming so again be patient.
It may need to re-boot itself a few times...this is normal.

After all this is done run diskclean and defrag from the Syaty/Accessories/Tools menu...
Again be patient.

Let us know when this is completed how the system is now...hi thanxs for your answer
I will download de antivirus you said
But I don't have XP so I cannot download the SP 3
My notebooks has Windows 7 system and there is only the SP 1 which I already have.
What else can I do thanksSorry...i misread your Post...disregard the Service Pack ADVICE...but follow the other steps thru to conclusion and let us know...

patio.OK I downloaded the Avast Free Antivirus install it and made a full system scan, after one hour it said: Scan Complete No Threat Found, but the Internet is even slower than before so I will do the next steps and keep informed.
The only thing I didn't really understand was the defrag or what specifically do I have to do, but I guess it is going to take a while until I come there, Thanks!Start/Accessories/Syatem Tools/Defrag ...
And the same for Disk Cleanup.

In the meantime visit SpeedTest.net...it may be your connection.

At least you have an A/V app now...Sorry I didn't have much time yesterday to post. So I did Disk cleanup and free 355 MB and then did Defrag and yesterday the laptop was slow on the internet and on opening programs, BUT today is much better and I gave it a try to watch videos and movies and IT WORKS. And also did the speed test and everything was accordding to what I pay....Thanks a lot for your Help and your Time... should I change the antivirus or that's OK now? and should I do the Disk cleanup and defrag periodically in order to avoid that this problem HAPPENS again? Thanks a lot! That A/V is fine and will serve you well...
Run the checks reglarly depending on how often you use the PC...i defrag weekly but others may say thats overkill.

You may also want to add MBAM and SuperantiSpyware to your protection arsenal....both Free.

Good Luck down the road...

the same reason that drinking drano would harm your digestive system.

That's got to be the best analogy I've every heard for explaining a registry cleaner.

But yes, GIULIANO, registry cleaners are nothing but trouble and really quite unnecessary. They break more than they fix. It's impossible for a registry cleaner to know and understand every single possible registry entry and they often make suggestions of things to delete that you actually need (or delete them without asking).

The only time you should touch the registry is to fix a specific problem and it should only be done if you really know what you're doing. Otherwise you could do as much damage as the registry cleaner does.

Best thing to do is just stay away from them. Thanks for the help guys. I will never use registry cleaners. These days’ people are buying registry cleaner and registry boosters or optimizers, simply because they prevent system crashes and optimize the Windows registry and enhance the PC performance.
If your PC is SHOWING symptoms like slow performance, a long STARTING time, it is freezing frequently or it is crashing without any apparent reason. Then it may be having some issues with the Windows registry.
As for Window registry, it is a place on the hard drive where Windows keeps the record of information it might need in the future like the changes made to system settings, applications opened etc. It is the place where you'll find things like user profiles, information REGARDING the file types, hardware and software installed or deleted.

So now you may have a query as to why to have a registry cleaner, the answer is with use this windows registry gradually becomes out-of-date and gets loaded with obsolete information. This may happen because of many reasons like when an application is removed just by deleting the folder, changing drive letters or simply moving the file without updating its record in the registry.

Whatever may be the situation these incorrect records accumulate inside the registry and they corrupt it. As a result computer slows down, shows errors, system alerts and even crashes. It also becomes evident that you've got problems with your registry when your computer boots slower than before.
To prevent a situation like this where the window registry does not function properly and also to optimize i tried WinZip Registry Optimizer and it really drastically improves the overall performance of my PC.

I downloaded from latest WinZip updated version at SPAM link removed...
Hope it might help you.

And your info is higly innacurate at best...Quote from: richardwilly on September 22, 2011, 09:53:11 AM

This is just nonsense. Sensible people will DISREGARD it. On a humorous note, I wonder if people realise what "willy" means in UK (British) slang? Somehow very appropriate.

Although i couldn't get hold of the nonsense Police....their servers are overloaded. Before you do anting to the registry, do this simple test.

It sounds as if you may need to reinstall the printer driver. When you do so click "change my update preferences" on the window that pops up while trying to load the printer. When you do that, you will SEE options to change it to 'automatic', or to 'download only if'.

Set it to automatic, remove my failed INSTALL from the printer control SCREEN and replug it. It will take about 2-3 minutes but it will search and find a bunch more STUFF and install them. Printed a page to test it.

If you still have trouble go here for a more detailed explanation.

I am trying in vain to access my restore partition on the above machine. I have followed the mfrs directions explicitly first f2 then f9 etc. but when i get to the part were I am supposed to reinstall windows, my regular version just boots up instead.
Some background:
I am not sure of the HISTORY of this computer. It has Win 7 home premium on it and I see that on the store ads, it is listed with win7 starter. So does this mean that it was upgraded and did that goof something up to the recovery partition?
Also the boot booster does not show in the BIOS.
I would like to create a boot usb or something to save all the driver data and the OS in case of disaster, such as a complete HD crash, as the ASUS does not come with a recovery disc. Then what? what if it is already corrupted or infected? would I copy the hidden partition also? and could I restore it bare metal with a brand new hard drive installed? Remember, I have no DVD on this commputer, It is a netbook.
You didn't say it was corrupted or infected. You asked: "...to save all the driver data and the OS in case of disaster, such as a complete HD crash..." Macrium will image to external USB drive. It also allows creating USB boot drive. Thanks for the reply. I did not know Macrium would do this. The USB thing is huge, because then I could get to my backups. Why I am suggesting that POSSIBLY there is some corruption, is because the f9 factory restore does not work as well as the boot booster function in the bios. From what I read, there is a hidden place on the HD that the bios reads to help Win7 to load faster which is a bios controlled function. So with these not working, I am just thinking that there must already be something wrong.
I will check out your suggestion unless I get some other ideas.

...From what I read, there is a hidden place on the HD that the bios reads to help Win7 to load faster which is a bios controlled function. ...
No, not true. Win7 has a System partition to control boot functions. Has nothing to do with BIOS. The manufacturer's Recovery partition is BIOS "controlled", i.e. restored from BIOS menu. If something is wrong with partition table, "F" keys won't work. You should be able to get Recovery CD's from Asus. You can get a USB CD/DVD drive. I've got one from a laptop that died. I never use it anymore. Thanks for setting me straight. My computer illiteracy shows. Seems I know just enough to get myself in trouble. :-)
Anyways, what you are saying is most likely correct. The special bios activated partition must be corrupt. I will contact ASUS today and try to get/download the restore disc. What my concern is though is that If I have to use it I will lose the Home Premuim advantage if it downgrades me to the Starter Version. Is there no way to recreate that restore partition with the current configuration? I have no disc for the Home Premium but it DOES show it is registered and legit. If you use the factory restore method...whether by hidden partition or with a CD they provide you lose all your data and apps and it takes the PC nack to Day One status...
So if it shipped with Starter then thats what you'll wind up with.
Home Premium will be gone.Quote from: Frazzled on September 19, 2011, 06:47:50 AM
...I have no disc for the Home Premium but it DOES show it is registered and legit...
Are you the original owner of the netbook? It either shipped with Starter or Home Premium? BTW,you probably don't use the added features of Home Premium.
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/products/compareHello, In response to your question, unfortunately I am not the original owner. I called them and they had others work on it and do not know what exactly was done if anything. OK, after perusing the different editions, you are probably correct that the starter editions would most likely SATISFY most if not all of my requirements. I AM having a bit of a problem in getting a separate restore disc. I will try ASUS again with hopefully better results. I will keep you informed.Best of LUCK...
Normally the manuf. are pretty decent to deal with...Well maybe NORMALLY the mfgrs are good to deal with, but NOT in this case.
After I finally reached a live person who was pleasant on the phone, but not helpful in this case. They said I have to contact by either internet or phone, the ASUS E-Store whereby I would be helped further. I was encouraged by this but upon further calling, The rep at the E-Store said that for my particular model that there are no recovery disks that can be made, shipped, or purchased. If there is a recovery problem you need to send the netbook in to them for service. I told them this was unacceptable and that I would factor this in when purchasing a new computer as well as telling my associates.
So here I am, back at square one.Solution seems clear: sell it & find something else. Thanks for your helpI'd bet the latest version of Ubuntu would run just fine on that machine...

Solve : how to rename a sheet in an excell workbook.?

Hello, can somebody please tell me how to rename a sheet in an EXCEL workbook. Are there MANY ways to rename them , what are they? THANK youhttp://www.ehow.com/how_11798_rename-excel-worksheet.html
This MIGHT help.Double-click the sheet name (at the bottom).Anyone smell homework or is it just me?Yes. SOUND like a homework question to me.
The clue is how the question is worded, i.e. "...Are there many ways to rename them , what are they?..."
Sounds like an instructor's, not a user's question.

Solve : dell laptop and external monitor issues?

Answer»

I have a dell inspiron running windows 7. I have it connected to an external monitor and wireless keyboard and mouse. What I want to change is the fact that when I don't use the laptop for a short while the external screen turns off. I know I can change this setting in power management but I want the DISPLAY to stay on when it is showing on the external monitor but have it TURN off after a short while when I am using the laptops own screen.

So basically I don't want the display to turn off when the display is on the external monitor, but when I am using the laptops own display, without an external monitor then the display can turn off to save battery. Is this possible?

Thanks. You will need to adjust the time of turning display off whenever you switch display from your Power options. When on external, the option for turn off the display(on battery and plugged in) should be Never. While on the laptop screen is specify the time to turn off display and then save changes. In short, there is only one setting for both and then changing that option manually when switching display. Thanks for your help. I was hoping there would be some sort of automatic solution, where the laptop KNOWS that there is an external monitor connected and it stays on. But thank you.If you only use the external monitor at times when the laptop is on AC power, you could specify that there is no screen BLANKING when on AC power, and your previous blanking setting when on battery power.

Solve : HP desktop will not start?

Answer»

hi,
I have an HP pavilion a6040n. It has Vista. This morning it worked fine, I left it on for a few hours. When I came back it was frozen. The mouse arrow would not move. Tried CTRL/ALT/DEL and nothing happened so I shut it down with the power BUTTON. When I tried to turn it back on it keeps getting stuck on the very first screen which is black and lists the video card info (I think) it says VERTO GEforce...etc. Nothing I do will start it.

I tried running my RECOVERY disc and my "bootable system HARDWARE disc" but nothing. I think it is that windows will not start right? What can I do?

THANKS for any ideas
MicheleClear the CMOS - Small silver battery inside on the MOBO, remove it for a min or so. Then replace and turn on the machine. Any difference?I took out and replaced the only thing that resembled a battery and then when I turned it on it went to blue HP screen and system recovery was at the bottom=f11 so I pressed that and now it is running some kind of test. OK it finished...and it passed
after the test it ASKED for the recovery disc and it restarted, it says "windows is loading files" FIXED!! Do you know what happened in the first place?
thank you so much!Just a slight problem in the BIOS, I get it with my old Sony VAIO all the time.

Solve : Need help in removing a rougue email account that has taken control of my Hotmai?

This MAY sound silly but I can not seem to find the answear for this question.

I have an hotmail account that a significant other(no longer significant) had access to for sharing information. This person has now taken control of this account that is registered with my email address and has blocked me from taking control back. I have very important contacts in this email account that I do not wish to LOSE by closing the account.

Can someone give me suggestions of how to regain control and removing this individual from my account? All help is greatly appreciated.

There is a good reason for this. Think about it. You might be genuine but equally you could be a person trying to hack someone else's account, and even if we believed you, and we knew how to do what you want, we wouldn't tell you how to do it because this is a public web site and anyone could Google for "hack Hotmail" and surf right in here and read it, doing our reputation no good at all. You were foolish not to change the password before making that other non-significant. You were also foolish not to back up those contacts.

Exactly. With a webmail account all you NEED to do is share the password. Security is your responsibility. Regarding BANKS, if you are careless about securing your bank card PIN e.g. if you share it with someone and your account gets emptied the bank is unlikely to help you.

Solve : Boot from cd doesn't work for Windows, but does for Ubuntu??

Answer»

Hey all, new guy here.

I have a four year old machine that I built. Originally had XP sp3 but I obtained a Vista Business x86 SP1 disc from work (Dell OEM disc that came with a new computer, we still use XP at work). Replaced XP with Vista ~ eight months to 1 year ago, no problems. However, earlier this week Vista suddenly wouldn't boot up (guessing because my son has recently discovered that you can download crap from the internet), so I wanted to do a clean install.

I downloaded Ubuntu 11.04 to use as a live cd to transfer some files out of my Windows partition, which went well. I booted Vista from the CD, re-formatted the partition, and installed. Something appeared to go wrong with the install as afterwards Vista would boot from my HDD showing the splashscreen and then hang on a dark screen. I tried to reinstall, but now I get a "press any key to boot from cd" and I mash my keyboard without any response, and it continues to boot the inoperative Vista on HDD. I should note that when I have booted from discs in the past, it hasn't prompted me to "push any key...", it will just auto-boot from that device. I have a USB keyboard but I have it attached to a PS2 adaptor and I've tried it both as a USB and PS2 device. I set my boot sequence to either of my DVD drives, disabling all other devices, and that doesn't help. I unplugged my HDD and it just errors looking for Windows startup after going through the same procedure. I have thrown in the old XP disc and a ACER OEM Windows 7 disc that came with my older kid's laptop, still the same. I inserted the motherboard utility disc and it recognizes that it is a different disc ("press any key to boot Xpressrecovery tools" or something similar) but the result is the same. Finally, I threw in the Ubuntu disc and...it boots Ubuntu without a prompt to press any key?!?

I used Ubuntu again as a live cd to reformat the partion that I want to install Vista, hoping that would delete whatever's causing my problem (bad MBR?), but it's still the same when I try to boot from the Vista or other Windows discs. I've reached my knowledge limit, can anyone OFFER me some advise?

Thx in advance. If the machine is not the Dell from the CD it ain't gonna work...it'll be blocked.

You can borrow any MS CD to re-install as long as you have a valid activation # to facilitate an install...as long as the versions match. It already worked when I originally installed it ~ 1 yr ago. I do have the activation # from the computer it came from as my work reinstalls their own build of XP on our work machines, therefore the activation code is not used.

Whether it would work or not, it should still boot from CD, which is my problem.Using a Vista OEM disk from your employer (and as far as I can see, an OEM activation code) to install Vista on a home computer owned by you would be a clear breach of the OEM licence under which your employer obtained the Vista disk which is tied (legally if not digitally) to one workstation at your employer's premises. OEM disks are only sold and licensed to accompany a piece of hardware (in this case, a Dell PC.) Using Acer OEM install disks likewise. You can call this nit-picking if you like, but in regard to breaching license terms and EULAs, we pick nits. Therefore, I feel our advice must be "pay for a valid license".

You may be wrongly blaming your son. I suspect a hardware failure - CD/DVD-ROM drive, hard drive, or something on the motherboard. I would be interested to know if the boot order in the BIOS is set to boot first from the CD-ROM device.

OK, I obviously haven't expalined this clearly (and in reviewing my original post, I can see that I didn't). I bought the computer which the disc is tied from my work (when we do upgrades, we give employees the chance to buy our older machines). The OEM disk was still in plastic. I used the computer for parts to upgrade some aspects on my existing build and the remainder lies in my basement. As such, I owned the computer and the OEM disc. Sorry for the confusion.

How would a hardware failure allow BOOTING of a linux disc and nothing ELSE? As explained in my first post, boot order was set to the DVD drive (the actual manufacturer's name appears in the boot sequence) and second and third devices were disabled.Quote

How would a hardware failure allow booting of a linux disc and nothing else?

It won't...as i stated the CD is probably not tied to the machine...even though you may think so.Quote

I can imagine a gradually deteriorating read laser in the CD/DVD drive could be causing problems with some disks and not others, but you wrote "either of my DVD drives" - you get the same set of symptoms with each one? Do the problem disks work OK in another computer?

Quote from: patio

As I said, it installed perfectly fine ~ 1 year ago and was used extensively since that TIME until this week. How would the CD not being tied to the machine prevent booting other Windows discs (for the record, I was not going to install Windows 7 from the son's ACER laptop, I just wanted to make sure that it wasn't a faulty Vista disc)?Quote from: Salmon TROUT on September 23, 2011, 01:16:04 PM

Yes, 2 DVD drives (ROM and RW). Both the same. Haven't tried the discs in another computer but will do so tonight. How would the disc reading capabilities affect the BIOS asking me to "press any key.." when normally it directly auto-boots without required input and my keyboard not being responsive during that time? Not quite sure why we're even entertaining the idea here.

The disc you have is for a Dell computer. It's only licensed for that machine and no other.

Solve : My Laptop Won Start?

Answer»

My Laptop wont start due to registry corruption. when I turn it on the loading bar comes up and then just before it comes up to the login screen it just stops and wont go any further and I can leave it for hours and still wont do anything. I have tried the system restore and it says that there is no restore points when I know for a fact there was restore points before I had this problem. I have tried a recovery disc and it says that a file is missing and wont continue. I have tried a full system restore and it still says that there is a file missing.

P.S. I am using windows vista

Please Help

Jmdutchy1) What do you mean it won't start due to registry corruption?

2) What is new or different since the last time everything worked properly (ie, new hw, new sw, virus, error, etc)?

3) How did you try system restore?

4) How did you try a "full system restore"?when I mean it wont start due to registry corruption I get an error message that when I Google-ed it it said that it was a registry corruption preventing it from starting.

well I don't know what has changed as I just turned it off and the next day that I WENT to use it it just wouldn't start.

I started the computer then continuously tapped the F key that you press for system repair and then tried to restore it to a previous time and it said there was no restore points.

I then tried to restore using the same method as above but with the factory restore setting. What is the EXACT error message you get and when do you get it?0X80071126

and

0x7385764a

and also

0x80000003I don't know what those numbers are. I asked for the EXACT error MESSAGES ( COMPLETE MESSAGE ) and when you get it. I want to know if there are any FILES mentioned. 0X80071126 when I tried to factory reset my laptop also the error 0x7385764a came after I clicked ok

then the 0x80000003 when I tried the recovery discQuote

You have a recovery partition and a created recovery disk, is that what you mean here? What laptop model do you have?
Can you still boot to safemode on that condition? No I have a recovery disc on a CD and no it does not boot in safe mode and it is an ACER.Exact model number is like "dell dimension 3500"

Acer is not enough. What Operating System is this as well?1. Is the boot sequence in BIOS set to boot from CD or DVD, if not I would suggest you to go to BIOS and change the boot sequence to boot from CD and try to boot from the CD

2. Is the computer custom built or OEM built?

3. What is the model number and who is the manufacturer of the computer?

4. Have you made any changes to the computer by installing any new software or hardware?

5. Since when are you unable to boot the computer normally?

6. You need to get Windows Vista DVD to perform further troubleshooting either to scan the computer or to perform repair install, I would suggest you to contact the computer manufacturer to obtain vista DVD.reinstall the op systemQuote from: gord99 on October 10, 2011, 09:52:38 AM

3) Is there anyway I can get rid of my Acer Tool? Everytime I get on the computer, automatically, my Acer Tool pops up and its very annoying. I have to get a better description of what the Acer Tool is but its very annoying.

4) I think this is the question I wanted to ask and its a minor one. Is there anyway I can get my thumbnails back? Would I have to upgrade from IE 7, which I have now, to IE 9? I don't believe you've stated your version of Windows. Is it Vista or 7? Oh, Im sorry about that. I have Windows Vista. I hate the Adobe PDF reader. There are many alternatives. And Foxit...as suggested would be the best choice...

Thanks, though.Try RESETTING Internet Explorer http://support.microsoft.com/kb/923737I haven't done it yet, but have bookmarked the page. Thanks much. The last time I had this problem occuring RECENTLY on my IE8 browser was not resolved by any Windows checking solution. However without any changes or reinstalling/resetting IE, the stop error did not appear as of this time. The PC was on the same time installing critical or recommended updates which were installed successfully and now fully patch. I was also making a weekly clearing of cache or junk files by using Ccleaner and scanning with an updated Superantispyware for tracking cookies. Frequently do I scan by MALWAREBYTES but I update it ANYWAY.

Solve : Kids Lenovo Died BOOTMGR Missing??

Answer»

Thank you for having a LOOK at my problem today.

I have a friend (yeah I know, very unlikely isn't it) who's Lenovo "S10e" ideapad, notebook, was working fine for the past 2 years, however, now it comes up with "BOOTMGR" is missing?? and will not start at all.

I dont know much of the history, other than to say, I am told it that it has Windows Vista? or 7 as the O/S. Although LOOKING at the labels I think it may be XP.

His school tech said, the best thing to do with it, is to wipe it and start again.

The label on the front says it was designed for XP, and has an Intel sticker with "ATOM" on it also.
On the rear it has the Product key code for windows on the authenticity sticker.

It does not have a CD drive but has 2 USB ports available and an internet connection port.

The lad may have loaned it to someone else when it all went belly up, but I am uncertain as to how it all came about.

Is there something that can be done to fix this little computer and how might I be able to help him with this problem?
Your help is greatly appreciated.
Thank you.Wipe it and start again? Not when you have important data on it...
Would it be possible to take the hard drive out, slave it to a desktop computer, and make a backup of the data first? This is a Vista/7 computer-this "BOOTMGR" error only occurs on Vista/7.
This is how to fix your error:
http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/fixing-bootmgr-is-missing-error-while-trying-to-boot-windows-vista/
You can convert an ISO of a Windows Vista/7 install DVD to USB bootable format like this:
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/installing-windows-7-on-a-netbook
http://www.techmixer.com/install-windows-vista-from-bootable-usb-flash-memory-drive/
It would be ideal if you could ascertain whether Vista or 7 is installed.Thank you for your reply Transfusion. I really don't want to do a lot on it.. Its not mine and I don't want to "accidentally destroy it".
I'll wipe it and put the O/S from the disk I was given,( it might be an XP disc, but hey, that's what I was given.) but also I don't think there is a lot of info on it that is wanted at this point. Just some games and so on. It is the end of the year, so no school work.

Just how might I go about finding this part out , it doesn't go past "boot manager is missing."

Is it in the F2 setup somewhere?

The recommended sites are much the same, Transfusion. They all assume that you can enter the computer and run it as normal and have the windows 7 CD or similar.

Unfortunately I don't . He doesn't and I'm not sure if the techy at school is WILLING to use their copy or CD to put an operating system on it for him.

So where to from here?

I had to fix my Windows 7 "bootmgr is missing" error a couple of days ago after I made the mistake of choosing the wrong drive to overwrite the MBR while creating an Ubuntu startup USB drive. The Windows 7 and Vista bootloaders are the same-I borrowed a friend's Vista Setup DVD (which by the way, was an OEM HP disc) and launched Startup repair from the disc, and followed the INSTRUCTIONS here:
http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/fixing-bootmgr-is-missing-error-while-trying-to-boot-windows-vista/
without any issues.
No you don't need to boot into Windows and "run it as normal", you just have to be able to boot from the setup DVD/USB drive to fix your problem. One thing's for sure-you'll require a Vista/7 setup disc to be able to fix this problem... but seeing as you already have an XP setup disc on hand and have trouble finding one you might as well wipe the laptop. Be sure to install a good antivirus program when you are finished.

Solve : computer freezes when opening internet?

My laptop had been open to the internet and iTunes for a while. When I went to type a new website in the screen completely FROZE. Task manager wouldn't work, so I powered off. When I turned it back on, it scanned a disk and SAID it was OK after a while. So my laptop restarted and it seemed fine, but when I went to the internet, after a minute it would freeze. Again, nothing worked, my mouse froze, task manager wouldn't come up so I was forced to shut down. When I restarted it scanned disks again, but the same thing keeps happening.
I have windows vista, and internet explorer 7This sounds like a virus, maybe downloaded thru iTunes? Check your antivirus software, maybe it will find something.Usually when I have a virus, I start in safemode with networking, update malwarbytes and let it fix the problem. Now I can't start in safemode, it keeps stopping on crcdisk.sys
Any ideas?

Is that the ONLY thing you've tried ?? No Anti-virus scan, Malwarebytes in normal mode ETC etc

Maybe you should start a new topic in the Virus section !!Quote from: reddevilggg on October 20, 2011, 05:24:37 AM

I can't run anything because I haven't been able to GET on my compute at all. Anyway, I don't think it is a virus, after researching this error some, it looks like it might be my harddrive.Try Safemode with Networking and post all currently installed protection softwares such as antivirus, firewall, scanners or Ad blocker.

Solve : Windows Vista: Reformat C:?

Answer»

Hello to everyone on the forum.

I have a windows vista computer that does not like me, lol. It is a insperon model, with an intel dual core processor. I am trying to reformat it while funning off of the boot cd, but when i type in the "Format c:" commad, it replies with "type the current volume lable". I am unsure of what this is, and what should i do to find this information??

Thank you in advance for your help. It wants the name of the drive. If you haven't assigned one, either just press enter or type c: again. But why are you doing it that way? I assume you have a Vista CD. Just boot to the Vista cd and select the option to format before installingThis is just what you see in Computer, such as Local Disk (C:) - the drive label is just "Local Disk"The format command ASKS for the volume label to make sure you really mean to format the volume.

Type DIR and press Enter. Look at the first line of the output. In this example, the volume label is Win07

Volume in drive C is Win07
Volume Serial Number is E4DB-A92A

Directory of C:\

01/05/2011 19:39 <DIR> $RECYCLE.BIN
01/05/2011 15:34 33,446 1920x1080-black.jpg
12/06/2011 14:44 57,368 1920x1080-grey1.jpg
29/04/2010 21:07 <DIR> ATI
06/02/2011 21:55 <DIR> AV

But what kind of boot disk are you using? If it's a DOS boot disk, you're only going to be able to use FAT.

That disc either CONTAINS Vista, in which case you can do as I suggested above, or it is an image of what was shipped to you and will restore the system to "as shipped" status. Either way, you do not have to do what you are doing.I tried to just re-install the windows, but i feel that removing all previous contant will help it. Why?

Does the cd install Vista from scratch? If so, you will be given the option to format first.

If it's a restore disc that takes the system back to factory shipped state, it will format before installing on its own.

Solve : Custom Taskbar Toolbar?

Answer»

I like to create several custom taskbar toolbars by:

right clicking on the taskbar->toolbars->new toolbar...

After unchecking "Lock the taskbar" I want to move this toolbar to the left side of the taskbar next to the start BUTTON, however it seems ANYTIME I move a custom toolbar and lock the taskbar, it will not shrink all the way (a small portion of one of the links within the toolbar will show). I do USE the handles to shrink it down as small as possible.

This doesn't happen in WINDOWS XP, but Windows Vista and 7 seem to do this.

Any ADVICE would be appreciated.Looks like the only solution I can see as of this point is disabling the visual styles. This corrects the issue on Vista and 7. A bit annoying....

Solve : can't attach photos to emails?

This is happening on two computers I use. An HP PRESARIO with VISTA IE9 and an HP laptop Win7 and IE8. I recently bought and INSTALLED the software for a Sony Handicam camcorder. I first NOTICED this last night when I couldn't attach any photo or other file but after trying several times it did attach two pictures but it was like not going smoothly-it attached one file and the other appeared differently. That is it showed one picture and the icon for the other picture. Now today it's back to nothing at all. I've successfully attached many photos in the past to emails. I'll try system restore and MALWAREBYTES. Any other advice? Thanks!

Solve : HDD allocated after upgrading to Windos 7?

Answer»

Hi there, I recently installed Win 7 on my PC. I USED to have XP. I have a HDD IDE, the one is running WIN7. I also I have a 2TB sata drive that I use as a slave. Before I installed Win 7. The Sata drive was working fine until I upgraded to Win 7. Now my HDD does no show on MY Computer screen. I have all my important information in that Hard Drive. When I go to the disk manager, it shows the drive, but it says unallocated. What can I do, how can I retrieve all the information. I have in the HDD. I do not want to lose all my data. Thanks!!

[REGAINING space - attachment deleted by admin]As a rule of thumb, I always unplug all unnecessary drives while installing an Operating System to avoid messing up.
1) Before we MAKE any unnecessary modifications to the drive, could you slave that drive to another computer to see if your data is retrievable?
2) Did you accidentally format the partition?
3) You could try http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/Testdisk to recover partitions from a corrupted partition table.I did not format the drive.Okay, then have you tried the other options I listed above?

Solve : Full factory reinstall of Windows using command prompt found with f-10 on reboot?

Answer»

I have an EVEREX lap top that had the reboot problem ASSOCIATED with windows VISTA upgrade, "Upgrade 3-3% complete......". Well I f-10'd on reboot and got the command /NoExecute=Optin /? (something about resetting with a FULL restall to factory Windows) but I didn't write down the string and I got IMPATIENT and stopped it before it completed. Now I get a message "Windows cannot complete the installation. to continue installing Windows restart the computer." on restart it goes to the same message. When I try f-10 again the full string is not there, only the /NoExecute=Optin with a blinking curser. Can you tell me the rest of the string to write in to restart redoing the factory reinstallation?
Thanks RobertI doubt the installation would be completed properly if you forced it to quit... so I'd recommend booting to DVD and doing a repair install. I don't have the CD.
Robertthe "NoExecute=Optin/" is probably part of a bootloader entry which boots to the corrupt Windows Install.
How did you manage to upgrade to Vista without a DVD? Did you download the ISO directly from the Windows website? If you have the ISO you have to somehow get the file to a working computer, and then create a bootable USB flash drive from the ISO.the "NoExecute=Optin/" is probably part of a bootloader entry which boots to the corrupt Windows Install.

Your Right! That's why I Need the command that start's the reinstall.
I was given this computer because it was jamed up from the upgrade message "Upgrede 3 - 3% complete...." and it's continuous reboot cycle. That's what I was TRYING to fix when I messed up and stopped the reinstall. It may have an ISO but I have looked for hours and can't find it.

Robert
"NoExecute=Optin/"
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff557134(VS.85).aspx

Optin and Optout seem to be modifiers only used in Windows XP and Server 2003. I'm afraid you are stuck in a quagmire-you don't have a functioning operating system, and you can't redo your Windows Vista upgrade because you simply do not have a bootloader entry for the Vista installation. Now you need to get the Vista installation media out of the hard drive onto a functioning computer-this is a laptop, which makes it all the more tedious...

Does your EVEREX computer have an OS recovery partition? How exactly did you upgrade Windows? What is the model of your laptop?Quote

And just FYI Jason2074, when someone has their fingers crossed behind their back like that, it usually means they're lying.

Robert, you may have to call Everex and ask them to send you a restore disk for your computer. Either that or find a Vista DVD to do the install.

Solve : Display Crumbles and Recovered?

I have an acer laptop with NVIDIA geforce 310M cuda 512 MB graphics. Often times the display starts to crumble and then returns to the original display. After that a message comes in that says "the display driver has stopped working and recovered". Does it mean the graphics card or chip is near to its end or failure?Have you tried updating to the latest drivers? I have SEEN a GT 550M laptop have similar issues with the OLDER 197.33 drivers. By "crumbling" do you mean that artifacts appear on the screen? If so, then that means your chip is failing. I have successfully fixed a failing MOBILITY Radeon HD 4350 on an Asus laptop by using a Panasonic 1200W hairdryer on full blast. I held the hairdryer 4 cm away from the chip for 10 min-1 hour later, lo and behold, no artifacts. I am not new to registry editting; but this ARTICLE was no help : HTTP://support.microsoft.com/kb/929825/en-us
The KEYS were fine, they required no changing (they were already configured CORRECTLY and pointing towards userinit.exe).

I do not WANT to reinstall windows, since I already installed all the drivers and the programs I had on the previous system, as well as the user files. In addition, I already configured my SSD/HDD (OS on SSD, User files, Default install location, and User folders on HDD).

Solve : .bat file association?

Answer»

Hey everybody, this is a general question about .bat files that has never come up before for me.

I have an encryption program set up at work that uses the .pgp encryption format. I open these by using a .bat file to de-encrypt them that has instructions and links to my encryption keys. I recently UPGRADED my workstation from an XP system to a Win7 system. I used to be able to double click the .pgp file and the dycryption program would run automatically (in fact there are still XP computers on the network that continue to work this way). On my windows 7 system this no longer works. I tried setting the association of .pgp files to the .bat file I use, but it will just not accept it as a default program for opening. I can still drag and drop the encrypted files into the .bat and it runs LIKE normal which indicates to me that the .bat is fine and working correctly. It's not a huge hassel but i just found it odd that i can no longer do it the old way. Could this just be a win7 quirk or am I not seeing something?

Thanks for any help!
Edgecrusher22Post the .bat file...ok here is the .bat I **** out the password for our system and mel and alice are just server names at this location. I don't see anything wrong and like I said it works fine if you drop the encrypted files into it. I just can't get it to associate with the incoming encrypted files for double-click opening purposes seems more like a windows issue rather than a .bat issue.

When the scan is complete DELETE all quarantined and infected files.

Then insert the Windows 7 installation CD into your computer’s drive and restart the computer.

Then press ‘y’ when a pop up box appears asking you for confirmation.

Then it will automatically solve the boot problem and you should be taken to your desktop.

Solve : Transfer between Win XP Hm Ed. 32-bit and Win 7 Home Prem. 64-bit?

Answer»

Hello,

I sincerely apologize if this topic has already been discussed I did do a search and found nothing.

I am buying a new computer that has a dvd drive, and has MS Win 7 Home Prem. 64-bit edition.
My previous computer had MS Win XP Home Ed. 32-bit, with MS Office 2000, I made many backup files which
I have STORED on dvd and cd disks.

Will I need a 3rd party device or software to transfer these BACKED up files on-to my new system
from the disks. Or do you just PLACE the disks in the dvd drive and Win 7 does the rest, I don't
understand if there would be a conflict between WinXP 32-bit and Win 7 64-bit.

Thank you.

What you have is what we refer to as "scumware"...phony virus apps that just want to seperate you from your hard-earned money...
The trouble is is that they are insidious...and very often extremely hard to remove unless SOMEONE who KNOWS what they're doing assists...

A virus cannot destroy hardware

Couldn't someone write a virus that turns the fans off and does something to work the CPU constantly until it overheats. Or, that reformats your drive to maybe Windows 98?Quote from: Doug on October 11, 2011, 07:55:33 PM

Not quite sure why that question needed repeating...and yes ...2 of the 3 are possible.Quote from: Doug on October 11, 2011, 07:55:33 PM

CPU fan turns off, BIOS shuts off computer, no hardware damaged.
CPU overheats, BIOS shuts off computer, no hardware damaged.
Drive reformatted, no hardware damaged.

Solve : Vista Screen saver shuts off after a few minutes.?

Answer»

I'm having trouble with My HP Pavilion HP6116f , AMD X2 - 64 BIT processor with 8 gig of DDR ram with VISTA Home premium 64 bit having the screen saver turn off after a short time on It's own. Is there some way to find what is toggling it off?3 Things to check...

E-mail app

Anti-virus

Windows updates...
All 3 of these if triggered or scheduled in the background will interrupt the screensaver. Also, a drifting mouse cursor will do this. Since this is a desktop HP, without touching the mouse, look at the cursor and see if it's drifting slightly. You may also check power settings for something that says "Turn off BACKLIGHT" or "Turn off screen".

Solve : acer one netbook with windows 7 starter cant boot to welcome screen?

Answer»

when i turn it on it goes to a screen that says boot normally or start diagonistics i tried both and nothing happens it just goes to the welcom screen but it doesnt say welcome its just the background and the diagonistics doesnt say anything. what do i do? It has no cd drive as wellCan you boot to your BIOS menu setup? Its either F2 or Del key on first boot-up of your computer or look on the POST screen for the right key. Then try loading default settings usually found on the bottom of your screen. Make sure to save and exit.I tried that to and nothing can i get to the command prompt and try something from there? This is my friends laptop and dont know much about it. If the laptop just doesn't boot to Windows, can you get into the recovery partition? If it would be POSSIBLE to take the hard drive out, plug it into another working PC, save all of your data, that would be great.

screen that says boot normally or start diagonistics
Are you booting to Advance Boot Menu(pressing F8) or does it take you directly on startup?

Hi,

You many face boot HANG problems during the boot up of Windows 7 operating system.

Hanging means booting cannot be processed after starting the boot process.

Slow boot problem indicates that it TAKES a long time to complete the boot process; from starting till the end.

Virus or malware INFECTION is the main reason for the boot process hanging.

If your PC contains many startup processes, you may face slow system boot up.

Also limited RAM space could result in the slow boot process. When the black screen shows up it only gives you the option of running the diaganostics test or start normally thats it i dont press anything when i turn it on it just goes to that screen.I know it is not exactly a super high-tech fix, try pressing F2 rapidly as soon as you press the power button to turn it on, you may be able to access BIOS through that method. Failing that, try F8 for Windows 7 Boot options.Quote from: bobsklarservices on October 12, 2011, 12:13:14 PM

It's not a BIOS issue...

Solve : Windows Update, MSI, .NET Framework and Installing/Uninstalling Programs Issue.?

Answer»

For some TIME now I have been unable to install many THINGS that require .NET framework to RUN as well as install Windows updates. I get error codes after the updates fail to install such as 66A, 64C, 6B2, 2, and 8024200D. When I try to install/remove windows or non windows programs I get an error (See error1.gif ATTACHMENT) I can't help but not get this error. I have done many things to try to fix this problem, like a SFC scan, chkdsk, ms fixit, and sys restore.

I have tried uninstalling .NET framwork with and without the dotnetfx cleanup tool but it does not work. How can I fix this without having to send it in for repair or having to backup/format/reinstall os?
