Solve : Question about win 7 32 bit and 64bit?

Answer»

Quote from: jeff9353 on October 10, 2011, 06:45:45 PM

The OS I have is Win 7 Altimate.

If it spells "Altimate" like that, it MAY be a fake!

Ok i think i can sleep better tonight. It appears that jeff9353 has NOT been posting the copy of the Passmark tests as i would have expected but instead has been typing them himself FROM the displayed text of the reports. Therefore that being so it is HIS typing ERROR (??) that is the basis of the O/S's being presented as they were. Probably also explains the observation that ST is making as well "If it spells "Altimate" like that, it may be a fake!" I think i shall politely excuse myself from further involvement in this thread. Best of luck to those that stay on.truenorthAgain.....sorry for the mis-spelled WORDS... It is a NEW store bought copy of Windows 7 Ultimate !!!!!

Solve : CHANGING WIN VISTA BASIC TO WIN XP?

Answer»

It is widely possible to change from win 7 to xp of any any edition and version except win 20000 dwnward.
i have hp laptop 530 with vista basic and working perfectly. But due to one important program that i will need to xp and not supported by vista of any version i tried hard to install xp on this laptop all the efforts yields no avail.
ram 512
hdd 150gb
cd drive dvd rewritIt WOULD be more convenient to run http://virtualbox.org so you can simulate a Windows XP INSTALLATION on your computer inside Vista for that particular program.

Just USE the Windows XP installation disc to delete all partitions, create a new partition, and then install XP on that partition if you want to wipe Vista.Quote from: Ademil4vic on September 27, 2011, 10:45:38 PM

It is widely possible to change from win 7 ...
ram 512...
You're not running Win7 with only that amount of RAM.http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/products/system-requirementsMake sure that there are XP drivers available for your system. If there are no XP drivers then try transfusions suggestion about Virtual Box.So how does Virtual Box setup hardware without drivers? I ask because I installed Virtual Box - winXP Pro on my Vista box and I was wondering that if XP works on my vista box in Virtual Box, will XP run the same with my hardware if I installed it direct without Vista. I REALLY miss XP.
JohnI would rather upgrade to Win 7 rather than downgrade to XP.
Virtualbox sets up the Windows Installation to include GENERIC drivers which support the virtual hardware.

You can go to your computer manufacturer website to search for XP drivers.
If XP works without a hitch in Virtualbox, it will definitely work natively on your system, provided there is driver support.Quote from: Computer_Commando on September 28, 2011, 05:44:06 AM
You're not running Win7 with only that amount of RAM.

Yes he is, system requirements are listed as 1GB of ram, yet when you run the install, it just wants 512mb to install and then windows just slugs along once installed.

You need a Windows XP product key, and CD, then simply insert the disc, boot from it and follow the instructions.

Solve : Right Click (copy/paste) not working on Laptop touch buttons?

Answer»

I have a Dell Vostro 3550 with Windows 7. I recently purchased a Microsoft bluetooth mouse. It WORKS fine, except when the computer goes to sleep and wakes up it take a while for the bluetooth to activate. My main concern is that I can no longer use the touchpad or buttons to highlight something and then right click to copy. The highlighted are goes from blue to normal. Yes, I can do this easy enough with the mouse but I like the ability to do the same with the touchpad. Any suggestions??

PeterWhat about the functionality of the touch-pad when the mouse is DISCONNECTED?truenorthI've turned off the mouse, via the little switch on the reverse side, and the issue still remains. After a bit of a document has been highlighted and the right touchpad button is depressed the highligthed text disappears and nothing pops up, like copy.

Looks like a lot of recent drivers, don't know which one is Bluetooth.Go to your Mouse Properties - Device Settings tabs- Settings. LOOK for Buttons and expand, highlight Right Button Action. CHOOSE Secondary Click(Context Menu, Special Drag) and make SURE to hit Apply. This settings is on a Synaptics touchpad, so yours may vary. But this is how you will be able/enable to highlight then copy/paste using a touchpad. This touchpad is an Alps.Jason----THANKS!!!
and you too Truenorth!!!

Solve : My PC is messed up.. Black and White screen??

Answer»

This started a couple days ago...

It first happened when i dropped a pen on the right side of my keyboard, the screen went white and made a horrible STATIC noise. After a couple seconds the screen changed from white to black and stopped making any noise, but it was still on. The power button was still lit up and i couldn't turn it off. nothing happened when i shut the laptop either. It had been charging at the time also, i don't know if that's important. Anyways, i had no way of turning the computer off with any of the buttons so i took the battery out and put it back in. I continued using it normally for a day or two until i had the problem again and did the same thing. I tried opening it on safe MODE also. Two days ago this problem happened again while I was working so i proceeded to take the battery out put it back in and turned the laptop on again. It was fine for the first minute or so. I had enough time to open my work and save it to a USB but as soon as i opened internet the problem happened again. I took the battery out and turned it back on, went back to the internet and it went white and black, once again. At this point i decided not to use it again for the rest of the day. Yesterday i tried restoring the laptop but it froze in the middle of it, afraid to take the battery out yet again i just left it until it ran out of battery. This morning i woke up determined to salvage previous work i have saved to the laptop because i realized the problem was getting worse. I hooked it up to a spare monitor and turned it on. I started it up normally and i could see it on both screens. I got my screensaver up and was looking through my files, not wanting to open internet in the event the problem would occur again. This time the screen went black after like 3 minutes and text popped up. I didn't have enough time to read the whole thing but it said something about how there was a problem with windows and that i should restart my computer. The problem is that i couldn't restart it because after that it just went completely black and i couldn't turn it off, this also showed up on the monitor and when my laptop went black the monitor lost input. I took the battery out and tried to turn it on again but now the screen only remains black and so does the monitor.
I am completely out of ideas and have no idea what is wrong! Can someone please help?! Like what are possible things that could have GONE wrong and how can i save what i have on my laptop?

By the way its an Acer aspire 5532, windows 7, 64 processor (if you need any more info about the laptop just ask!) In as much you are having this issue with internet, and you were prompted by the windows BAR msg to do somthing with windows, man re-install a new and fresh installation of windows 7 and let see what followsQuote

I tried opening it on safe mode also
This is the important part here. Can you run the computer in Safemode with or without networking? Is it a blackscreen with all indicator lights still on and hard DRIVE steady led light on? Or screen freezes(cannot move mouse pointer, type anything) while on the internet? Just happen that I was fixing this morning a HP Compaq laptop that blackscreens randomly with steady lights on. Partially fix without blackscreen at this point and still being diagnose/observed on probable software/driver conflict. Manage to get into safemode without network access to fix certain booting/blackscreen problems. Could it just be the screen possibly? Try an external monitor.

Reviews on Windows Vista/7 Readyboost.

I have tried it on a Sony VAIO W Netbook(1GB DDR2 667 RAM) and have seen noticeable performance improvements when loading Google Sketchup, Google Earth, and the Office Suite. Boot times were noticeably decreased. However, when testing out games such as the RPG Mytheon and NFS: ProStreet on its GMA 3150, its frame rate stayed the same, and once I turned up the details on NFS, the frame rate actually plummeted to a new low with ReadyBoost on. The Vaio was running Windows 7 Home Premium. On the AMD computer in my specs, ReadyBoost on Win 7 had no noticeable effects.I have a 3.0 GHz AMD Phenom II x4 system with 4 GB RAM. I set up Readyboost with a 4 GB pen drive; I couldn't tell any difference when it was first activated. I just forgot about it, and a couple of months later I looked in the pen drive's properties and found it wasn't being USED for Readyboost any more. I had no idea when or how it got turned off. I have heard that it makes the most difference if you have 1 GB or less of RAM.
In short Ready Boost does little or nothing...
I've tested on over 12 different setups and saw no noticable difference...

Solve : Here are all the problems with my computer as of October 6, 2011. Please help!!?

Answer»
I was the person who posted about how Windows would freeze up all the time and I would have no sound coming out of Realplayer etc. Well, heres an update. I have sound but I have to start in Realplayer to get it, otherwise, there is no sound. Now as far as Windows goes, what I did was a couple of things. First, I disabled a few add-ons which helped me out. Second, I upgraded internet explorer from IE 8 to IE 9. When I did those two things, my computer was FIXED or so I thought.

The real only problem now is that everyday Windows is telling me to install new updates and whether I should restart the computer in 10 mins, 1 hr. or 4 hrs. Well everytime I try to install new updates, it says that I failed. Windows couldnt install the updates. This HAPPENS EVERYDAY !!! Also the microsoft fix-it center which helped me with the computer problems I mentioned above doesnt open. What should I do?

Also, I should point out that some of my history is gone from today as well and I dont know why. Its also freezing a little bit but not as bad as before.
I have Malware Bytes Anti-Malware. I also have Norton Security Suite. I use the Norton Firewall to protect my computer. Theres a lot here but here are some of them:

Update for Windows Vista (KB2607712)
Security Update for Windows Vista (KB2536276)
Update Rollup for ActiveX Killbits for Windows Vista (KB2570791)
Update for Windows Vista (KB2570791)
Update for Windows Mail Junk E-Mail Filter (Aug.2011) (KB905866)
Update for Windows Vista (KB2563227)
Security Update for Microsoft.NET Framework 2.0 SP2
Security Update for Windows Vista (KB2556532)
Security Update for Windows Vista (KB2563894)

Those are some of the updates that when I try to install them, they dont work. It says to install, so I do. I restart the computer and it says the updates were not configured and windows couldnt install the updates.

I tried disabling Norton Firewall for 15 mins. and used Windows Firewall but it was no dice. The updates still are not installed right. Also, thanks to me, windows defender is gone. Everytime I try to open up Windows Defender it says "Application failed to initialize 0x80070006. The handle is invalid." What does that mean? MAYBE thats the reason why the updates are not working?

I went to check my browsing history to see what sites Ive been on and there was nothing there. It shows the history from 1,2 and 3 weeks ago fine, that hasnt disappeared yet, all the sites Ive been on are not shown. Can someone please help me?

Heres what happened when I looked up Windows Update and Windows Installer. For Windows Update, I changed the startup type to manual. Windows Installer's startup type was already manual. Is this what I should have done? What should I do next?

I tried the link above and I thought it worked but it didnt. What should I do now? Now I see on my computer that I have low disk space. Well, I clean my disk space from Disk D about 5 or 6 times now and theres nothing left to delete.
So what should I do about the failing windows updates and the disk space problem?

I tried your link that you gave me and it doesnt work as I still have low disk DRIVE. Can you please tell me about the used space on each partition? What does that mean? I actually think I posted it somewhere already. If your talking about what I think your talking about, I posted it in the post that I started "My computer is fixed...sort of".

When I clicked on the link Microsoft Fix It came up. I let them handle any problems I had. They said everything was ok and I had to restart the computer to install the updates. When I restarted the computer, it said the samething I had before, that the Windows Update were not configured. I think I hit restore and nothing has changed. It still says I have low disk space on Drive D. I have deleted everything I could from Drive D.

The recycle bin is empty. I have C, D and E. I do a disk cleanup and I choose either between Disk C or D. I choose C obviously. Now I have deleted some files. I hope this works now. I deleted Recycle Bin stuff, downloaded program files and a couple of other things, which Im not sure of.

I ask this because Im still having the same problem with Windows Update and Drive D. My computer keeps saying that the Windows Updates are not installed correctly and that I have to free up space on disk D.

Now I have tried Disk Defragmenter but I dont know if Im doing it right. When it says defragment now, I do that to all the disks, yet I still have the same problems. What should I do?

Drive D appears on my screen. It says that Im low on disk drive space on disk D. Theres a picture of a disk at the bottom of the screen. I mean Ive deleted files from C,D,E etc. I dont know what else to delete.

Im very sorry if this seems long and I rambled on and I repeated myself. Im sure some of you guys know my problems by heart by now. So if you can help me, I'd appreciate it. I dont know what all this means above. The stuff that I posted above, I really dont understand it, so if you can help me with any of these problems, I would deeply appreciate it. Thank you.

Considering all the problems you are experiencing, have you considered reinstalling Windows Vista?
What is the make & model number of this computer?
If it did not come with DVD's or CD's the Windows Restore Partition is probably already on the hard drive. If so, you can take the computer back to Day #1 Status (when it was shipped), in probably less than 1 hr. You will lose all your files & subsequent installed programs, so make backups for all your personal files.Well for now, can you help me try to get my history back. In other words, I would like to look at my browsing history and see the websites and web pages that I have been on. It was ok until earlier today and now the websites/web pages are not showing up on my browsing history.

Also, at the bottom of the screen it shows a little disk and it says "Low disk space". And almost all the time, it says that Im losing disk space on disk D and to free up disk space on disk D. The thing is, Ive done that already. What else is there to do? Ive tried system restore and it doesnt work. It says that I have an error or something. I mean I let system restore do the job. It shuts down my computer, restarts it, and it says there was a problem and the changes, the windows updates etc. dont change. Internet History gets deleted after a period of time has elapsed.
Or you may have configured: "Delete browsing history on exit".
You can't get it back.
Now, answer my questions.I have a Windows Vista computer. Compaq FS7600e 17" Flat-Screen CRT Monitor.
Manufacturer: Acer
Model: Aspire M3100
Processor: AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 4400+ 2.30 GHz
Memory (RAM):2.00 GB
System Type: 32-bit Operating System

Is that good enough?

Also, as far as the browsing history goes, I didnt check off "Delete browsing history on exit". All of a sudden it was fine and now it wont keep my browsing history. As far as my history getting deleted after a period of time, I had internet history for about 27 weeks and it wasnt deleted and now I only have history from about a week or two ago and that got deleted? http://support.acer.com/acerpanam/desktop/0000/acer/aspiree360/aspiree360faq40.shtml
Well, I tried your link. To tell you the truth, the computer is worse now than ever. :(Ive lost everything. I have no browsing history. All my files-documents, videos are gone. My Norton Anti Virus is gone. I dont even think Im in Internet Explorer 9 anymore. :(I think it went back to IE 7. Is there anyway I can get my browsing history back? What about my files, my videos, anything?

I don't understand what you are referring to. If you used eRecovery, everything is gone forever & you did not following instructions given in the link provided.
Note: These steps will return the system to the original factory installation including all factory installed drivers and applications.
Back up all data prior to using this procedure.
Ok, well how can I check to see if I backed up my files because Im 99% sure that I saved the files. Well, I contacted someone from Acer. They said I should call a local technican to see if I can get the files back.

Solve : Where is my RAM??

Only using windows mail and internet explorer. My other computer has 4gb ram and I thought this would be as fast if that is all it was doing. Seems silly to buy a computer with 1gb RAM and the system tells you that you only have 746mb. I was just thinking maybe there was something loaded that I don't need and that I could get rid of.
Thanks for your interest

It might be just on browsing or on Internet connection speed. I also have a Win 7 Starter notebook with 1 gig of RAM but on browsing and emails has never been a problem. Only on some occasional slow internet connection speed. Why not try first using Google Chrome browser to check on the difference. If you are used to have a 2 to 4 gig of memory and a higher end computer, certainly you would see a difference on a 512 to 1 gig of RAM.
Are you SURE your just using one antivirus and firewall as a BASIC protection software?Thank you. Will try Google Chrome. Only have Nortons and Windows firewall says Norton is magaging it.

It means my browser screwed up, so just ignore any previous posts from me on this topic.what i could suggest to help you speed up your computer a bit, is to uninstall norton via their uninstall tool that i think you can get from their website somewhere, it ends up working cleaner then the uninstall that comes with it, and install microsoft security essentials from microsofts website, for a free anti virus, and if you can, buy WEBROOT internet security essentials, both work well in tandem, and they are what i currently run on my windows machine, both together use ~90mb of ram, out of 6gb. im betting norton would be using twice thatThere's ABSOLUTELY nothing wrong with the current version of Norton.

A few years ago the the Norton programs were rewritten from scratch. Now they're much more on par for resources with other full-featured pay programs. It had a bad rep for being a resource hog in the past, and people just can't get over that. I have it installed on 3 (one XP, one Vista, and one 7) and none of them have a problem with it.

He's got it. I know about the power options page. This is a Toshiba Satellite L505. I still like to do this if possible. Is what I'm trying to remove called the Bios password? I searched "remove password L505" and a couple of different combinations and most of the results are about people who don't know the password or who bought the item from someone else and again want to GET around this. I just want to remove the screen. When I go to Bios menu and choose edit it asks me to enter a new password. Nothing about removing the screen. Unless enter nothing does that. And some stuff about removing the CMOS (I think) battery. I don't think I want to do that.A BIOS password shows up before the Windows splash screen...if you don't know the password there is no way around this except taking it to a Service Center...be prepared tho show Proof of Ownership or they will not do it.Here's the screen I would like to get rid of.

[regaining SPACE - attachment deleted by admin]the switch does not work anymore has been tempormental for awhile , but does not work at all now is there any other way to bypass it so it will just stay on all the time Not unless you want to open it up & add a bypass wire by soldering across the switch. I'm thinking , NOT, or you wouldn't be asking. Is the switch LOOSE or does it still click back and forth like it should?it is clicking back and forth seems to be working properly otherwise Is the internet connection disabled, like this:
http://tips4pc.com/articles/networking%20tips/how_to_enable_or_disable_your_in-htm.htmno it just keeps saying turn wifi on when u diagnose the problem it says wifi not turned on please enable In many laptops, the wifi component is actually a RATHER small piece not integrated into the motherboard. It's usually about 1 1/2 inches square, and is connected to the motherboard by a couple of wires. It's POSSIBLE these wires are loose or broken.

Check in the device manager and see if the wifi adapter is still listed. Don't confuse it with the listing for the on-board LAN, that's a separate listing in the device manager. You will notice a solid light beside the wireless icon when switch is ON. Did you happen to upgrade your inspiron 1525 from vista to win 7? Did wireless worked on your win 7 system or before in vista? Quote from: quaxo on October 01, 2011, 08:21:50 PM

I get the same message when accessing some other parts of Win 7 (e.g. change screen SAVER), and even though this has been going on for several months I do NOT get a DLL error message in applications; printer does work; and while this is occasionally an annoyance it does NOT seem to be getting worse and so I have ignored it. I do not recall installing any particular software immediately before noticing the DLL error message, however since I only get the error rarely (as I do not want to check what is printing, or change screen saver, or the few other things that give an error) it is possible that some software installation "created" the problem. What is your advice?

=========== some other details ==========
I've done some reading on DLL problems and while I am pretty comfortable around computers, from reading there are some dire warnings about DLL download file websites as well as the free system scans and etc. Hence it seems that by intervening I might make matters worse, or at least consume a bunch of time "fixing" the problem as well as the likely need to re-install various applications. I had been considering Reimage software and that is how I found this site and its thread which raises lots of concerns about this software for fixing DLL problems.

I have run MalwareBytes as well as AdAware and only the latter found 1 tracking cookie. I use Norton Security Suite and generally am not on dangerous websites. Have software and hardware firewall.

My laptop is slightly more than a year old. I have an image of it after I had done most of my software installations, but there have been perhaps a half dozen subsequent to that time. I have data BACKUPS. Win restore points do NOT go back FAR ENOUGH to get to a non-problematic place.

I have the Lenovo DVD Operating System Recovery Disc for Win 7 Professional

Solve : Reset administrative password?

Answer»

In my COMPUTER lab at college there is a computer one of the previous students put an administrative password on it. This student is no longer around. I have seen quite a few rescue cd's for cracking a password on the internet. We tried OPH crack(?) but it didn't crack the password. Is there any way to crack the password other than installing the operating system again? Are you asking as a student-user of the lab or are you officially involved in overseeing the computers in the lab? If so, what is your title in that capacity? Likewise, what was the status of the previous student relative to the lab? This is an intermediate pc operating systems CLASS. I am one of eight students in the class. The lab is for the BEGINNERS pc operating systems class. We help those students in the lab. The computer was one built by one of the previous students in the lab. It is for lab use only. The student put WINDOWS 7 with an admistrator password. We can't access the computer for lab use. The student that put Windows 7 on the computer has moved out of state with no way to contact them.Well, I can't tell you how to crack the password because I don't know of a way. So, I THINK you'll have to install the OS again. In such a classroom setting, I suggest implementation of a drive imaging procedure for each computer or at least for each unique make and model computer used in the lab so that any computer used there can be restored from a drive image rather than starting from scratch with a reinstallation in circumstances such as this. Solve : problem sending the command?

Answer»

This problem started two days ago. I am using Win7 with Office 2008. When ever I click on a folder or item in my Document Library I get the message, “ There was a problem sending the command to the program.”. I click O.K. and try again clicking on the item and it opens with no TROUBLE. It is the same for all folders and ITEMS in the library. It always works just fine with the second try.
Thanks, eddie460Isn't Office 2008 a Mac PRODUCT? Did you mean Office 2007? Anyhow, try this: Open Windows EXPLORER and navigate to the Word executable program file, Winword.exe. It will be in a folder with a name like C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office 12. Right click on the program icon and if "Run as administrator" is checked, uncheck it.

Solve : Restore Points?

Is creating a system RESTORE point very important? How does it work and why should I create one?It basically SAVES the CURRENT state of your system. Advisable before MAKING any critical changes so the OS can be restored to a previous working state.Actually it essentially only backs up the registry and system files:

Solve : Do I use Disk Defragmenter to free up disk space??

Answer»

I ask this because Im still having the same problem with Windows Update and Drive D. My computer keeps saying that the Windows Updates are not installed correctly and that I have to free up space on disk D.

Now I have tried Disk Defragmenter but I dont know if Im doing it right. When it SAYS defragment now, I do that to all the disks, yet I still have the same problems. What should I do?Defragmenting a disc does not increase free space. In fact, if you are short on space I'm surprised the defrag app will even run. Anyway, the only way to increase space is to delete files.

Having said that, assuming your OS is on C: drive, I'm not sure what d: drive has to do with Windows Updates.Drive D appears on my screen. It says that Im low on disk drive space on disk D. Theres a picture of a disk at the bottom of the screen. I mean Ive DELETED files from C,D,E etc. I dont know what ELSE to delete. I suspect you need to delete System Restore Points.Quote from: Computer_Commando on October 04, 2011, 08:15:29 PM

I suspect you need to delete System Restore Points.

Ok, how would I go about doing that?Disable system restore on all drives. As soon as you do, all restore points will be deleted. But I still don't UNDERSTAND - what do you mean "drive D appears on my screen"? Before you do ANYTHING, please explain your problem IN DETAIL.These two links may help:

1. Microsoft's page on how to delete restore points

It says windows 7, but if you have windows vista, it's pretty much same procedure as listed.

2. How to reduce system restore disk usage in vista

Solve : Unwanted graphics?

Answer»

I'm trying to clean up my laptop with OS 7 before I sell it or give it away. I've used Recuva to overwrite all my old photos, but when I use the iCare Data Recovery program it literally finds thousands more, most of which I don't even recognize and must have been dumped on the PC by websites. I can't use iCare to find a path because all it does is allocate a filename of its own to each file. They are all listed as RAW files.

Does anyone know how I can locate these files so I can shred them? They can't be found by viewing Hidden Files and Folders, and using CCleaner to clear out the caches makes no difference either. I'd like to think they are all in one big bunch somewhere, but I've got a feeling they might be spread throughout the system. I'm not real KEEN on wiping the hard drive and reinstalling all over again.

Thanking you in advance.Quote

I'm not real keen on wiping the hard drive and reinstalling all over again.

Any reason why ? ? This would solve the issue...I first noticed the 'problem' on my Vista laptop. I eventually decided to use the recovery disc which came with the PC, expecting all would be wiped in the reinstalling process. To my surprise iCare found them all again. It won't if when you re-install you select delete the partition and rebuild it...
I've never heard of iCare...http://www.icare-recovery.com/
Is this the iCare you talk about?

If you are really paranoid you could run http://www.dban.org to shred all the files and the Master Partition Table of your HDD. HOWEVER that is unnecessary in most cases. Try Patio's suggestion first.Yes that's the iCare. Thanks for your help Tranfusion. Over and out.

Solve : repair disc issue?

Answer»

My friend has a Compaq laptop running WINDOWS Vista. She asked if I'd help her re-format it so that it would be like it was when she first got it but she doesn't know much at all about computers and never had made the repair discs for it. When I tried to do that an error message popped up that the computer doesn't have a DVD/CD drive, even though it does and it works and is the original drive which the computer had when she BOUGHT it. I have an external DVD drive and I plugged it into the USB port but still got the same message. How can I get around this issue so that we can make the discs and re-format it? Thanks Check the manuf. site for more info...there may or should be a hidden Restore partition that can be used instead of the CD...
The CD may not be being recognised because the OS is not loading properly...

Best of Luck and keep us posted. When booting laptop, check the COMPAQ logo screen and it may tell you what key to press to get the recovery restore partition option (I think compaq and HP computers have those)This is with regard to making n repair CD for Windows VISTA. There was a change made to VISTA where he can no longer create a complete install DVD from the operating system itself. Instead, what you can make is a repair disk that is really a repair tool, not a complete new INSTALLATION.

DO NOT FORMAT THE DRIVE .

Thank you! I found out the issue was caused because the CD/DVD software which came with the computer needed to be re-installed. We did that and then were allowed to make the disc Ok, now we have tried to recover the system both from the hard drive and by using the disc which was created and are continually receiving this annoying error message early in the process "0x40010011300001002" and says contact HP support but I can not FIND anything about it on their site.

If it makes a difference, the computer is original to when it was purchaed with the exception of the RAM. My friend had more added to it at some computer repair shop to try to make the computer faster.Try removing a stik of RAM and repeat the process...any change ? ?
neither of us installed the extra RAM, don't know how to do that and don't want to mess with taking the computer apart or anything. I recently broke my own computer merely testing out an old hard drive. When I re-inserted the computer's original hard drive when I was finished the computer then started getting errors and now won't even start She plans to give me her Compaq computer as soon as we can erase/restore the drive. Thanks Have someone in your area thats worked on laptops come over for a looksee and buy him a beer...
Worthwhile investment.Does anyone have any idea how we can format this laptop? We'd really like to get this done so that it can be used...http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Other-Notebook-PC-questions/Error-0x400-100-130000-1002-Help/td-p/68276
This issue has been considered earlier on the HP site. Did you already see that?
The answer given there was not definitive. It seems to be a disk I/O error of some kind.

May I suggest having the drive tested outside of the laptop, in a Desktop using an adapter. If there is a motherboard issue, replacing the drive will be futile. Also, the desktop can backup some of all of the laptop hard drive,.Then you can format it anew knowing you have a copy.

Look on the HP site to see if a restore DVD is available from HP. At a cost much less that a retail VISTA.
Yes, I've seen that and it didn't offer info that would be of help with this. thank you anyway though.

Could something like this work? I'm not sure if this is the full version of the software or what...
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=180731238254#ht_2900wt_1037Quote

“This Disk is not” a Windows Vista installation disk and “does not install” Windows Vista on your system.

“This Disk does” allow you to repair your Windows Vista system software. Or install a backup of your system.
...from the link...near the bottom...
That says it all.
What is the model number of the Compaq? How old ,is it? Do you find a COA tag on it? That is the sticker from Microsoft that says it has a license for Vista OEM version.
If it does have the COA and product key, you can use the Vista install DVD for Compaq/HP. With regard to the product key, It is not the same as the retail version. Please tell if the COA for Vista is there. Do not give the key, just tell if it has the sticker. It will have the Microsoft name on it.okay. I've searched on Google several times and the general opinion is that there is just some issue with the Compaq/HP computers and no resolution to this problem ASIDE from obtaining another copy of Windows software on a DVD rom >:/

However, now that computer is not loading Windows OS now due to the botched re-install (and missing boot manager) I can not find out whether or not the computer had the 32-bit or 64-bit version of the software. Does it matter which version I get? Would there be some hardware conflict if I bought a brand new copy of Vista on disc and got the opposite version of what had been originally installed? My friend no longer has any documentation for the computer and the sticker on the bottom only says it was Windows Vista Home Premium but does not specify whether or not it was 32-bit or 64-bit. Hmm...With exact computer model # we'd be able to look up what it originally had... Also, if your having to go out and buy an OS, I'd suggest throwing the towel in on Windows Vista and using Windows 7 instead. Its way better, but you will want to have minimum of 1GB Ram, although I like 2GB minimum for 7. With computer model info and ram amount we'd be able to verify Win 7 drivers available and 32 or 64 bit operation.

About 20 minutes from the moment I suggested it. He ALREADY had an XP VMWare VM with MSOffice so it was just a question of installing the 32 bit driver off the Canon CD. It works fine.

Solve : How much security??

Patio -
Vista Home Basic 32 bit
I am running SuperAntispyware and Avast Antivirus about once a week.
I was told sometime ago that Malwarebyte was not necessary. I NOTICED that you told a person to run Malwarebyte. Is the two I am running enough to protect me (I have had no trouble so far) or should I also be running Malwarebyte?
Thanks BobAll security programs in the world are only half of your protection. The other half is Bobh and his computer habits.

You can surely scan with both, Malwarebytes and Superantispyware. Often, one will find something, the other misses.
Avast + firewall = good enoughAnd when you say you "run" Avast once a week, I assume it's ALWAYS resident, YES?Hi -

Great advice....try that in a city. When I was a kid we lived on a farm and that was true. We lived in Houston, Texas in the 70s and 80s. We locked our doors and got robbed twice. Times do change. Pardon the non computer remark. Bob I think that's the point geek was trying to make "Re: How much security?" like locking your doors to your house depends on where you live, how much security you need depends on What you are using your computer for, if you go online at all, how vigilant you are, etc.Sorry I misted the point. When I first got this computer I had lots of trouble because I was always trying THINGS to see what would work. Now I use it and have no real problems. Bob

Solve : compatibility?

is windows vista and ipod nano compatible??? having trouble with recognizing ipod when plugged into usb port. windows xp will recognize ipod when plugged to usb port.Yes, of course they are "compatible". Is this a new system? Have you installed iTunes?yes i have installed the latest i tunes 9 version and it still will not recognize. and yes this is a new system. i bought the computer september 11Do other usb devices work with the system? Any errors in device manager?yes, other devices work in the usb ports. i have 3 ports. i have not seen a error message in device manager.Well, then I suggest you post on the Apple support forum and see if they can help. I've gotten pretty good responses there. Sorry.Actually stating that iTunes or anything Apple are compatible with Windows is a bit of a reach....Yeah, well - it should work nonethelessi plugged my ipod in again and looked under device manager and there is a error message stating that i am missing a driver. attempted reinstall driver by searching my computer and internet but could not find driver. The latest version of iTunes is Vista compatible.

maybe try one of the following to see if it helps any

Quote

1) The first solution is that Vista sometimes does not look for drivers in the correct place. When the wizard asks you to provide a location for the drivers type in C:\WINDOWS\System32 and see if it properly locates and detects the iPod and loads the drivers.

2) Have a look in the hardware device list inside Control Pane. You may see you iPod listed (it should appear under the other devices heading) with a yellow triangle next to it. If it APPEARS here then right click it select properties. Next click update device driver. Do not do the automatic find, rather click "I will choose the device from a list." Click on "STORAGE device." With any luck VISTA now FINDS a USB mass storage device and INSTALL it properly.
Wish I could give you the iTunes crap off of my Vista Pc, It came preloaded on my Dell and I thought I would never KEEP the crap from popping up for update every time I rebooted. Thank god for Vista's StartUp Manager.Which device is missing the driver? Try reinstalling your chipset driver.

Solve : Devices do not work?

Answer»

I have an E-machine T3612 that was ORIGINALLY running Vista Home basic. I downgraded to XP but now my modem and sound card do not work. It appears that XP is not recognizing the drivers. Does this mean I either have to reinstall Vista or purchase new devices that are compatible with XP?
Any help would be greatly appreicated. Thanks Most likely, you just need drivers compatible with XP.
When you go to Device Manager, do you have any yellow exclamation marks there?
BTW...downgrading to XP was a clean install? Thanks for your response. Yes my install of XP was a clean install. In device manager under other devices I have yellow question marks, and then it lists such things as "Ethernet controller, PCI Device, PCI Simple Communications Controller, SM Bus Controller, and Video Controller."

Under Sound, video and game controllers - device manager lists several things, but when I click on one of them like "legacy audio drivers" under location it says unknown.

Thanks ...If you go here:
http://emachines.com/support/product_support.html?cat=Desktops&subcat=T-Series&model=T3612
you'll have all downloads (worthless for you, because they are for Vista only), and your computer specifications.
You'll have to go to Intel web site, and download any XP driver, they have for Intel® 945GC, which is your chipset.
Let me know, if you have any problems with locating particular driver.Hey Broni, thanks for all of your help. I went to the Intel site, and found my chipset, but the only drivers I found were for graphics. Plus they had several graphic downloads and I am not sure which one I should try? I was hoping to first get my modem working so then I could download remaining drivers from the emachine. Do you have any words of wisdom?

What kind, how far ago?

As for your computer, you have Intel chipset, so if you go to Intel site:
http://downloadcenter.intel.com/default.aspx
you'll FIND some of your drivers:
#3 - your Ethernet card
#6 - video/graphics
#10 (I believe) - audio

You may also get:
#4. Intel® Chipset Identification Utility
and then click on:
Quote
Try our IDENTIFY Your Product tool

Well I was able to get the drivers for the modem and the Network. I tried twice to download the sound card drivers but the file is 45mb and I lost connection twice at about 80% complete. But when I look on device manager everything that at one time was marked with a yellow ? is GONE EXCEPT for one yellow ? under the other devices. Then under that heading there is a yellow ! for SM Bus Controller. And in the sound, video, and game controller heading, under that is a yellow ! for Intel(r) AC 97 Audio Controller. (which was part of the failed download).
So any ideas on how I can download that file without timing out?
thanks ....I assume, you're on dial-up.
Then, you have to get download manager, like this:
http://www.freshdevices.com/freshdown.html
It'll allow you to resume broken download.

However, when I get to vista when I go into the system in the control panel it reads that I only have 2815 Ram... so where is the extra 1200 ram or so going? It is the 32-bit premium edition of vista... so it should be capable of handling 4 gigs without much of a hastle as FAR as i know... thanks Double post!

Solve : [Windows Vista] - How do u create hardware profiles ??

Answer»

O.K so first of all my specs:
Notebook ASUS C90S
OS:Windows Vista Hom Premium 32 bit
Processor:Intel Core Duo E6600
RAM:2GB

So Windows Vista disabled a few of XP's old wonderful features like defining icons for Default Programs (-.-) and sadly also "Hardware Profiles".
My Question:
Is there anyway to create custom Hardware profiles like in XP ?

I'm asking this cuz like i mentioned in the specs, I've got a notebook and the battery only lasts <1h without deactivating hardware (with it lasts 1:30 h). But after I plugin the LAPTOP I want those that hardware to be activated(startup of course) . If it'S done manually or automatically I don'T care I just want hardware profiles !

Thanx alotI FOUND this:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/141600
I hope it helps. The above doesn't apply to Vista, but you may check here:
http://www.lockergnome.com/nexus/windows/2006/12/05/hardware-profiles-in-vista/did that answer your question?Nope sorry guys it didn't help me, but thanx 4 the effort.

To clarify what I mean:
As u can c in the pics I uploaded, I only have one Hardware Profile (that's a windows of one of the Services) and in the "System Settings" Vista doesn't have any Option to make a Hardware profile.

Maybe there is a way to tweak the REGISTRY abit, perhaps with a program ?

[getting disk space - attachment deleted by admin]Simply speaking, Vista doesn't have that option.
Why? I don't know, ask Bill.Vista must have a pretty big list of things they removed...usefull things they removed -.-

...I'll really ask Bill about this ;-)I'd say with M$, it's normal...
Usually, it goes this way:
They release some new OS, or other program, and 90% of it GETS better, but 10% is broken.
But it's not about the NUMBER. In many cases that 10% includes some features, which either many people used, or they didn't bother anyone.
Oh well....

Solve : "Low disk space" but there is more than enough space!?

Answer»

My situation is I have two drives... C: and D: My C drive holds all of windows and is pretty much maxed out on memory usage. So, I put everything on my D drive such as games and programs because there is more than enough room there. I've changed my Environment Varaibles so that the TEMP and TMP go to my D:\temp FOLDER. When I try downloading a large file it will soon notify me that I have low disk space on my C: .
I know I have low disk space there and THATS why I tried telling my comp to download files DIRECTLY into my D: where there is room.
Am I doing something wrong or missing a step?

Windows XP
Sony Vaio. When you download a file you should get a screen which allows you to select where you want it to download to. At least, that's what happens in my XP.Depending on the operating system you are operating, I know Vista does, the file from internet will first download to a temp folder on the main hard drive, in your case it seems as your C drive is your main drive. You just need to keep enough space on the drive to hold a little more than the file you are downloading. Try installing any programs that are currently on the C drive on your D drive, delete unused files, and/or run disk cleanup.Exactly how do you have these drives and partitions set up ? ?
How big is C: and how much free space etc. ? ?Quote

Depending on the operating system you are operating, I know Vista does, the file from internet will first download to a temp folder
This is not true. It depends on your settings in your browser. You can set it up to any folder on any drive you want. If you use 3rd party download manager, you can set it up there.
Quote
I try downloading a large file it will soon notify me that I have low disk space on my C:
During download, Windows uses its temp folder to trace download, so if you're really low on C drive space, it'll display message like yours.
You have to remember, that for proper operation, Windows needs at least 10% (I believe) of a free space on a partition it's installed (C in your case).
You have to either free some space there, or use a tool like Partition Magic to juggle some space between C, and D.

Free Space 765 MB

D: Total Size 92.1 gb
Free Space 45 gb

Environment Variables:

Variable Value
TEMP d:\temp
TMP d:\temp

Solve : Too Many System Restores?

Answer»

First off, i use vista. I recently got my hp laptop, and i was deleting/uninstalling the un needed stuff off of it, when i accidentally deleted something i wasnt sure of. (it wasnt anything important, i know this now.) well i did a system restore and it loaded up the program i deleted. well it wasnt anything important so i wanted to undo the restore, then it gave me an error and wouldnt let me do it. so i tried another restore and everytime i kept trying id get an error, so finally i did a system restore another way on my computer, were it reverts the look to a classic style while its restoring, and that was successful. (IM not sure what the difference between the two system restores were, but thats the only way i could do it. it kind of shuts the computer down when it does it, then tells you if its successful before restarting whereas the NORMAL one tells you after restarting.) then i made the settings and all that jazz to my specifications and everything has been fine. my virus protection advised me to clear out all old restore points, which i did. anyway my question is, is too many system restores bad for your computer? and why did i get all those error messages, is there a limit to how many you can do? why was i able to restore it a different way but not the normal way?

Also a possible unrelated MATTER? when i first got my laptop it loaded up fast, and now (which im nervous that all the system restores did this even though i did virus scans and system health checks that checked out okay) it loads up normally to the sign in screen and then it takes 2 minutes to load up to the desktop, it stays black with the pointer and an occasional hour glass pops up. then it loads up after 2 minutes everytime. why is it doing this, does anyone have this problem? (i checked out different websites, and PEOPLE said its because there is too many things starting up, people said that its a vista download, people said its the same with theres and that if my computer doesnt have a detected virus or anything of that nature and that if its RUNNING okay to not even bother.)

someone please let me know, im a bit upset, this is a 3 week old computer. thanks for any help you can give me.

-KateI'm booting this back up to the top of the list for Kate. It's been 4 days and no one has given her any ideas as to what is wrong. There may be several possible causes:
1. To many startups, too many services.
2. Something was screwed during that removing of un-necessary stuff, and System Restore wasn't able to to fix it.
3. After the above removal, some registry entries were left behind.
4. An infection (I'd say, less likely, since your computer is only 3 weeks old).

To start sorting thing out,
- install Autoruns:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/Utilities/AutoRuns.mspx
After installation, click on "Logon" tab, go File>Save As, save it as a text file, and post it back here.
Click on "Services" tab, save it as a text file, and post it back here.
- install, and run "CCleaner":
http://www.ccleaner.com/
to remove (among other tthings) registry leftover
- install, and run "Serviwin":
http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/serviwin.html
(will be used in next step)
- we'll check for infections later

I would take advantage of the Warranty and have them restore the machine back to Day One condition, and consider it a lesson learned.

Solve : Orignal Operating Systems?

Are ORIGINAL Operating SYSTEMS like WINDOWS XP and Windows VISTA can only be installed in one computer?

If I have 2 computers do I need to buy TWO copies of Windows XP?I read an article about the Volume license. Volume license can only be use up to 5 computers only while the OEM license is for only 1 computer...Am I correct?...Correct me I'm wrong...

Here's my question:

If I have an OEM license OS can I change the license to Volume license? In simple terms but confusing enough:
A retail version (CD) MS policy is one copy = one machine.
An OEM liscense (factory installed) is tied to the machine it is installed on.

As far as OEM to Volume liscense it can't be done...the volume liscences have to be purchased on their own.

My rig is:

GeForce GO 6800

The issue I am having is about every 2 seconds my computer will freeze up for a fraction of a second causing the mouse POINTER, sound, video, games, typing, to skip and then resume. Only to skip again in another 2 seconds.

Some solutions I have tried is:
-Upgrading to Vista
-Complete Reformat
-Spy ware/Virus scans
-Ran a system utility program
...and none worked.

Does anyone have any information on what could be causing this?

Solve : Sharing a printer?

I have two laptops in my office within my wireles network. My XP computer has an HP photosmart 7150 series printer hooked to it. I have been trying to print from my other computer which is a VISTA home basic OS. No luck! The printer is ENABLED to share but it wont print if directions come from the VISTA computer. Do I need to install a different driver since I am using 2 different OS's. I have no problem sharing files only the printer is not COOPERATING. If I do need to install an updated printer driver on which computer do I install it?

Peter So, you see HP photosmart 7150 in Control Panel, Printers, right? How did you install it there? By searching for printers on the network or another way?

This might help: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb727037.aspxYou ahve to install a driver for vista on your other laptop. (not connected to printer). You will probably have to download from manafucters website.Based on my experience so far with Vista, it will recognize many printers without downloading a driver. I have two Canon printers connected to my desktop PC (Windows XP). Both are RATHER old models, a BJC-2000 and a BJC-3000. When I networked them to my notebook PC (running Vista), it brought up a list which included both printers. In other words, it had drivers for them.

The point of my last post was that he needs to install networked/shared printers on that laptop in a different way than he would if he was connecting the printers directly to it.My Vista computer recognizes the HP photosmart printer. However, when I want to print a document and the window for choosing the appropriate printer comes up it includes the HP printer as a choice, but after it accepts that printer as a choice it says ..........SENDING to printer yet nothing ACTUALLY prints.

PeterWhat is the name of the printer that appears in a print command panel when you try to print something? Does it start with \\, as shown below?:

The best way to determine if a hard drive is in perfect condition is to download the manufacturer's test utility. Most hard drive manufacturers have their own software for testing their drives. You should be able to download it from the manufacturer's website.

How big to make your windows partition depends on what version of windows you're going to install on it. For XP I would recommend at least 10 GB but if you're going to install a lot of software to your windows partition you'll probably need more. If you're going to be using Vista I would recommend at least 15 GB or maybe even 20.

How big to make your other partitions is really a matter of personal taste. Me, for example, would only create one partition for storage instead of 3.

Solve : Sound error?

Answer»

Ok the only thing that has changed on my system is I added an external HDD enclosure housing an IDE HDD. I'm running Windows Vista Home PREMIUM and now I'm getting this error saying:

BadDirect Sound driver. Please install proper drivers or select another device in configuration.
Error code: 88780078

Any one have any ideas? In device manager it says that my sound drivers are fine and when I update them it says Windows has determined I have the most recent ones. This only happened after adding the HDD enclosure via USB hookup. This is a Winamp error. Any ideas are appreciated. Thanks.First thing is that although Winamp has great INTERFACE, the older version have been known to experience many errors. The new versions MAY still contain some of these bugs so I suggest that you reinstall winamp first then if it persists, look in winamp preferences and find out which sound devices that it is PLAYING off of. Hopefully that helps. Is it by any chance Realtek on-board sound?Yes it is. I have the problem resolved now. All I did was unplugged my speakers and rebooted without them, then plugged them BACK in again.

Some Vista fun. very weird for me ???unbelievable solution, congratulations.... Nice...
I'd call it Realtek problem, though...terrible hardware.

Solve : [urgent] Vista Crash No Backups! S.o.s!!?

Answer»

My laptop crash with blue screen, I think it's because my bro accidentally installed a vista-non-compatible program, which is Alcohol 120%. Yea, my OS is Vista!

Here's the problem:

1. I've tried save mode, command PROMPT, n networking only, but to no avail **
2. I have no money to repair, the Fujitsu Center charges for $130
3. The most important thing, I have no backups!
4. I have no Vista Installation Disk, and my Vista is original so I don't want to replace it.

** Maybe this is CAUSED by Auto-Start Alcohol, therefore it crashes right away after I log on, leaving me no chance to uninstall it.

Can SOMEONE help me? I need to remove that Alcohol without logging in? Is there some software to solve it? Or somebody has another alternative?

THANK you, my laptop is crucial, I need to do many projects with it.Well...

The blue screen signifys a hardware error , which causes your system to dump memory ....

I would need the code to find out what ....

The full error message would be brilliant ...
