Solve : Erasing a Linux Hard Drive In Windows?

Answer»

My main computer is running Windows Vista, and for a while I was experimenting with Linux (Ubuntu) installed on an external harddrive. At the moment I've found that I really don't use it all that much, so I wanted to free up the space. Unfortunately, Windows doesn't appear to recognize that there is a hard drive there. Does ANYONE know how I might go about this? I don't need to scavenge any files off the drive, just a clean wipe so I can start fresh. Do you SEE any LIGHTS on the external drive? Can you try it on another computer?I'm impressed you were able to set up the external HDD to boot Ubuntu...not an easy chore.
Since Linux USES a bootloader that hides better than most i would use the Linux version of FDisk to do this.
Then PARTITION and format it in the file system you want and you should be good to go.
Last time i did this with normal tools it wouldn't get rid of GRUB/

Solve : windows xp crashing.?

Answer»

Hey,

I just bought this pc a few days ago and I had windows vista ultimate on here and it worked nice and fine no crashes no nothing

but some of my games didn't work with vista so I installed Windows XP and now I get blue screen of death every hour or so.

does anyone know how I could fix this?

I used the cd's that came with my pc for the drivers but i cant find out where to get anymore

help me please? The BSoD provides you with a STOP code and possibly the name of the file that caused the BSoD. Both would be helpful to know.
If the computer restarts wen the BSoD occurs then follow this:
Quote

1. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
2. Click the ADVANCED tab.
3. Under Startup and Recovery, click Settings to open the Startup and Recovery dialog box.
4. Clear the Automatically restart check box, and click OK the necessary number of times.
5. Restart your computer for the settings to take effect.

Knowing the system specs could also be helpful. If you don't know them, provide us with a brand name and model number.http://canadacomputers.com/index.php?do=ShowProduct&cmd=pd&pid=013656&cid=170.45

that's my pc if that helps any.

it crashed again and it said something like

driver_irql or something like that

my friend said bad drivers but i cant find any other drivers to put on.Try googling for some keywords that appear in the actual Blue Screen of Death error message:

Here are some instructions to further assist you in narrowing down the cause of the crash:

Try booting to Safe Mode and use your PC for a while to see if the BSOD occurs then. If it doesn't, you may need to upgrade the drivers for some hardware component.

In the future, you can set up a dual-boot system with both XP and Vista.Okay now we have the specs.
Now if you could please write down the STOP code and FILENAME (if any) next time the BSoD occurs, we have something to go on. Quote from: Deerpark on October 22, 2007, 11:24:20 AM

that's what i get that blue screen at the the problem driver_irql_equal blah blah blahThe stop code is listed on the first line in that BSoD sample screen.

As you can see there's also a file called wxyz.sys listed. If the BSoD you're getting mentions any file we need to know the name of it.at the bottom it says

nvt.sys i think it may have been nvyt or something im not 100% sure.If you're not sure then write the info down next time you get a BSoD or take a PICTURE of it. A BSoD can happen for any number of reasons so without an error message we can't tell you what's causing it.i know im trying but it pops up and dissapears so fast i BARELY have a second to see.Quote from: Deerpark on October 22, 2007, 11:14:07 AM

Solve : McAfee shows "on" status?

Answer»

In my Security Center of Windows Vista, it shows McAfee VirusScan as running. When I first got my laptop from Dell, they decided to be part of the Wonder Twin team, and went right ahead installing bunches of trial software for me...

Anyways, now, when I go into Security Center, and check Malware, I see:

And when I CLICK the link to show me the scanners running, I see:

Its not causing a problem, but is an annoyance. If avast! found itself disabled, and didnt warn me itself, I would never know. Can't you uninstall McAfee from Add/Remove?Quote from: Broni on November 02, 2007, 08:56:16 PM

Can't you uninstall McAfee from Add/Remove?
Last I checked, it wasnt there. But, I will check again
(Result: Windows Explorer has stopped working)
Lets try again...
(Windows at its best)
(While I am waiting:)
There are no services loaded or processes that start with an M that have to do with McAfee.
McAfee Site Advisor* is the only name on my PC with McAfee in it right now.

*Advisor is how McAfee spells it. They made a typo in their product

Its not under Startup (viewing in MSCONFIG)
Ill scan my registry (sometimes, I wish companies would STOP using the registry!)
Edit: Forgot to add: Didnt find anything that had to do with McAfee VirusScan

If I really must, I can try HijackThis. (But not today) Registry is probably your best shot, however sometimes, finding something there MAY be dificult.
HJT may show something. You may just post it, and I'll take a look.
services.msc would be worth to check, as well.http://pastebin.com/m13a7564e

Thanks for looking, I trash my computer with software.

I trash my computer with software.
Don't worry about it. I do same thing...LOL

First of all, I can't see anything related to McAfee (in services, as well), so your best bet must be painful registry search.
Secondly, you're using 1.99.1 ver. of HJT. With Vista, you may want to go with ver. 2.0.2.

Now, couple of items, you can "fix" (mostly cosmetic):

- O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file)

- O9 - Extra button: Trend Micro Security Services - {D5E1CDC8-64B9-4f8c-8155-FC3B6D6749F7} - http://tmss.trendmicro.com/dashboard/dashboard.aspx?JAGFGDJIDIHCJBJDCHBABIGDJCII CEBAHIHHF (file missing)

- O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: Trend Micro Security Services - {D5E1CDC8-64B9-4f8c-8155-FC3B6D6749F7} - http://tmss.trendmicro.com/dashboard/dashboard.aspx?JAGFGDJIDIHCJBJDCHBABIGDJCII CEBAHIHHF (file missing)

- O9 - Extra button: Run IMVU - {d9288080-1baa-4bc4-9cf8-a92d743db949} - (no file)

Then, I can see couple of entries, which you may reconsider as startups:

- O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime Alternative\QTTask.exe" -atboottime

- O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] "C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0_03\bin\jusched.exe"

- O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SigmatelSysTrayApp] sttray.exe

- O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Adobe Reader Speed Launcher] "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Reader 8.0\Reader\Reader_sl.exe"
(use Adobe Reader SpeedUp: http://www.softpedia.com/get/Office-tools/PDF/Adobe-Reader-SpeedUp.shtml, which you use just once, instead of running your application as a startup, or switch to FoxIt: http://www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf/rd_intro.php, which is much more slimmer, then Adobe)

- O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [NvCplDaemon] RUNDLL32.EXE C:\Windows\system32\NvCpl.dll,NvStartup
(needed as a startup only if you overclock your card)

- O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [NvMediaCenter] RUNDLL32.EXE C:\Windows\system32\NvMcTray.dll,NvTaskbarInit
(System Tray icon used to manage settings for nVidia based graphics cards. May be required for some 3D applications to recognize your card correctly - such as the game "Everquest". Otherwise, settings can be changed manually via Display Properties)

- O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [NVHotkey] rundll32.exe C:\Windows\system32\nvHotkey.dll,Start
(if you use "hot keys" for changing setting on Nvidia graphics)

- O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [ehTray.exe] C:\Windows\ehome\ehTray.exe
(if you want to access Windows Messenger from WITHIN Windows Media Center Edition)

And I wonder:
- O4 - Global Startup: Run Google Web Accelerator.lnk = C:\Program Files\Google\Web Accelerator\GoogleWebAccWarden.exe
I was using this thing for a while, but I really didn't see any significant difference, so I got rid of it.

You have also several services (O23) with "(file missing)". They are all legit Vista services, so I assume, you played a little with services, and you disabled some of them???
For the most part of a time, I am using a High Speed Fiber Internet connection (100MBPS)
Google Web Accelerator does greatly speed up sites on slower connections then mine.

I'm not questioning what you're saying but with that connection there isn't an accelerator out there that will improve things...
Google caches data from sites, and since Google is faster than most sites out there (server speed, and connection) it ends up on my machine faster (physical distance makes a difference as well)
Thus, allowing it to go faster. It wont accelerate sites that don't need to be, and it will not accelerate downloads. Even with google cacheing sites... how long does it take to find the cache file and load it as opposed to the page loading by itself ? ?
I'm not buyin it. There are still server issues, distance and indexing all taking place faster than a page can load ? ?Quote from: patio on November 03, 2007, 05:50:35 PM

I dont know the backend working of Google Web Accelerator, but I have noticed significant speed increase on some servers. I have not noticed any decreases. It really depends on what sort of connection you have... Quote

Welcome to the CH forums.

Google for 'merge partitions' (without the ') and you'll get 940k hits with info on partition managers such as Paragon, Ranish, Acronis etc. Some free, some not so free.

Good luck1. If you're using Windows XP, you cannot physically extend the "C:" drive partition using the standard utilities that came with Win XP. You can, however, use THIRD PARTY software (software from companies or someone other than Microsoft) to accomplish this. Since I have never done this, I will make no product recommendation. Should you choose this path, do a complete backup of your system. If something goes wrong you could lose your data.

I think you'd want to use third party software. If you use third party software to adjust the size of disk partitions, you should continue to use that same software for any future adjustments to avoid data corruption. It is designed to work with the existing Micosoft disk data structures and may use Microsoft "reserved" data fields and/or create additional ones for its own use. If you later use Microsoft or some other third party software to adjust the partition size they may overwrite data in fields they don't need. (And then you're screwed!)

2. Using the Windows XP software you may:

o Mount other logical partitions (or volumes), e.g. "D:", onto the directory structure of your "C:" drive. This would make it appear to applications as if it were part of the "C:" drive.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Volume_(computing)

http://forum.alcohol-soft.com/index.php?showtopic=22172

http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/windows/xp/all/proddocs/en-us/mountvol.mspx?mfr=true

o Redirect Windows XP to look for standard folders on other drives.

o Logically re-organize the applications and data on your system to make use of the "D:" drive rather than the "C:".

3. Could you clarify your current configuration?

Are you using Windows NT4, 2000, XP, or Vista? Which version of that operating system; e.g. Home, Pro?

Are you using a single hard disk with two partitions (or volumes); "C:" and "D:"?

Is 88 MBytes the total size or free space of the "C:" drive?

Is 10.82 GBytes the total size or free space of the "D:" drive?

Is there currently data on the "D:" drive?

Solve : Vista Autoplay problem.?

Answer»

I must have installed photoshop at least a dozen times DUE to PROBLEMS with my tablet...so yeah, now when I hook my camera up, it gives me ten different photoshop options, none of which WORK because I just uninstalled photoshop again.

I tried autoplay cleaners, but whenever I clean the photoshop off or try deleting the registry, my camera end up not "autoplaying" when I hook it up. To confirm this, I backupped and restored my registry and it works after I get my "photoshop autoplay option" back.

Solve : Motherboard upgrade with Vista?

Answer»

Hi, I have an Acer T180 - AMD 6000+ - 250 GB Western Dig. HD - 4 gb Corsair mods - MSI 8600 GTX - 500w ps and VISTA HOME BASIC installed..... I want to upgrade to a Biostar TF570.... in my new case. Does anyone think there will be a problem with Vista..... Again I'm just moving all hardware over to the new case and mobo.... Thanx. You will have to re-activate Vista. However, other than than should not encounter any other issues. If you do Microsoft is pretty lenient and if you call the 800# and plead your case about upgrading to a new motherboard they should fix you up.

Below is a link to a good article that discusses SPP and it's improvements over XP.

Thank you again...Installed the BSTF570 with "0" problems.... Did have to reactivate Vista, again no problem....ADDED 4 1gb mods....system runs faster....will play with the OC....but not for now.....Thanx's to Patio for the info...came in handy That's good to hear thanks for the follow up.Nathan get's the credit...i didn't do nuthin...

Solve : Mac OSX or Windows Vista??

Answer»

What if MacOSX and Vista were merged into one OS?

a WinMac or a MacVista or a VistaOSX?

Putting the strengths of mac and windows together, and allowing software compatible to both mac and windows to run at same time? No need to dual boot windows and mac like APPLE lets you or attempting to emulate MacOSX on PC which is AMAZINGLY slow... or so I've heard.....?

I dont think that Bill Gates would ever go for that....

But it would be a really POWERFUL OS.I think STEVE Jobs would also not go for something like this either.

Solve : Vista using HP Wireless Printer?

Answer»

I am running Vista PREMIUM and I lose my HP WIRELESS printer driver after a day or so. It completley goes away...? I have to uninstall then re-install the driver each time this occurs. I have contacted HP and they are not AWARE of the problem and for now they recommend to re-install each time.

HP C7250 All-in-One, Vista compatible Any fixes?wouldn't you rather connect it wired, it will have less problems unlike wireless. Did you try updating the firmware??I believe uninstalling and reinstalling the driver every time this happens may not be necessary. Try this. Open Printers (in Control Panel), click on Add a printer, select "Add a network, wireless, or Bluetooth printer", and let Vista find your printer.

I'd also try restarting your computer as a POSSIBLE solution. Have you tried that?

Solve : Windows Vista not responding?

Answer»

Hello all! I am new to the forum...I am having an issue that I first noticed a few days ago when I went to save a document I was typing in Word 2007. Whenever I would click open, save, save as...anything along those lines, the program would immediately go to "not responding." This would also happen when I would choose "open file" from an internet browser or when using applications such as notepad or wordpad. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks Try System Restore.let us know how you go with thatQuote from: programming_pat on October 24, 2007, 11:11:57 PM

2. Download, and install Spybot (if you don't have it) from here: http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/index.html

- O4 - HKLM\..\RunOnce: [Launcher] %WINDIR%\SMINST\launcher.exe

5. Click on "Fix It" button.

6. Restart your computer in Safe Mode (F8)

7. Run Spybot (click on updates, first), and fix whatever it asks you to fix.

8. Open Windows Explorer. Go Tools>Folder Options, put a checkmark next to "Show hidden files, and folders".

9. Delete following files (if they still exist):

- PLFSet.dll from C:\Windows\

- launcher.exe from C:\Windows\SMINST

10. Turn off System Restore.

11. Restart in Normal Mode.

12. Turn System Restore on.

13. Run HJT again, and post back its log back here. Here is my second log, I have windows firewall running...I didnt know what you meant by "turn system restore off" then turn it on again

As for turning System Restore on/off:

1/ Click the Start Button

2/ From the Start menu click Control panel

3/ In Control Panel click the System Icon

4/ On the Left of the System properties window you will see a list of Tasks, click on the System protection link

5/ In the System Protection window remove the 'TICK' mark from beside the drive you want to disable system restore on

6/ A message will now appear asking: 'Are you sure you want to turn System restore off'

7/ Press the Turn System restore Off button

8/ System Restore will now be turned off permanently on that particular drive

9/ To re-enable system restore just click your mouse in the box next to the drive you require system restore to monitor ( a tick will appear in the box), the click the Apply button and system restore will RESUME monitoring the drive.Cool ...Your HJT log is clean!!!

How are you doing with your original issue, now? Thanks for all your help, the not responding problem with saving/opening microsoft office documents is fixed by me uninstalling office 2007 and installing office 2003. However the problem still occurs when I try to open/save a document from notepad or open a file in firefox....the weird thing is, is that it works fine if i click "desktop", "my computer" etc..but as soon as I click "my documents" it goes straight to not responding. Also do you know what to do about "broken" icons? I have a problem with alot of broken icons (almost everything under programs has a broken icon.) Do you know how to restore/rebuild icons in vista?

PLEASE HELP!! thank you soooo much!
according to Hoyle - you know Hoyle, right? - the older OS must be installed first. At least, this was necessary when setting up dual boot configurations with two older versions of Windows. Now, I've seen references on the Internet about scenarios where XP can be installed after Vista to setup a Vista/XP dual boot system. But, regarding installing a pre-XP version of Windows after Vista has been installed, I believe, from any practical viewpoint, it can't be done. So, if you want to install W2K and Vista, figure on formatting your hard drive, installing Win 2K, and then installing Vista.

If you're not SATISFIED with this answer, try a Google search on dual boot Windows 2000 and Windows Vista. And if i may i'll save you a lot of grief if you choose to not take Soybean's excellent advice...installing Win2K after Vista is a chore and it never stayed stable enough for me.

So i bit the bullet, did it the right WAY and it has been FINE since...Quote from: soybean on November 04, 2007, 03:20:31 PM

One TIME I had 2k and XP Pro at the same time then about a year ago I had xp pro and wanted 2k again so I installed 2k and that's what happened.. 2k MESSED my xp up so bad, I just trashed the whole thing, repartitioned, formatted, hten installed xp pro and said forget 2k haha. It is possible but you can't do it backwards like that sorry.

REMOVE your old drive and put it on the new pc.make it slave to the new.then just copy your old file...
Any DATA on that drive can be copied/saved to the new drive.
However if you are thinking you can just copy and run programs it just will not work.
Programs need to be installed on the drive and in the OS they are going to run on...they cannot just be copied to a drive and used.
You will have to re-install any of the programs you want to use on the new machine.
But as i said all your data i.e. pictures, movies, text files etc can simply be copied and used as is...

Solve : Unable to Load Profile - Vista?

Answer»

I just bought this notebook Toshiba this summer. It's my baby. I take very good care of it (or so I think). Last night, it was a little sluggish, which is rare, so I restarted it. It tried to run some kind of scan and I canceled it, just because it never does that and I was impatiently working on a homework assignment. This was probably a boneheaded idea. When the computer FINALLY started booting back up, it told me it was unable to load my profile...my entire memory was gone. Everything except my programs. All of my programs are still here, but my documents and photos and settings are gone. It gave me a temporary profile where it says I can't save any changes. So...unable to save anything to this PC anymore? Suck.

Sometimes with my old PCs, there was a physical memory problem, so I ran my Disk Cleanup to see if I did that, then rebooted, we'd be fixed. But as it was scanning for things to delete, it said, "System Error Memory Dump". This didn't sound good. So I canceled it and freaked out in the old FASHIONED way.

Has anyone encountered this problem before? Is there any way I can restore my hard drive? I don't want to pay the Geek Squad to do it.

It's a Toshiba Satellite with VISTA Home Basic, 2GB memory, 200GB hard drive (it says right now that I have 139 GB left...I don't remember what it was before this.)Probably not.

I saw a post earlier that disappeared...it was a CHKDSK scan. And it's never done that before on my Toshiba. I used to do the Disk Cleanup on my other PCs. what program were u use for scanning ?
and this might help:
http://www.techspot.com/vb/topic17543.html
and this might help:
http://discussions.virtualdr.com/archive/index.php/t-48960.html
hope I help ya a bit.It was just a black screen that was forcing me into a CHKDSK scan on reboot. It'd never done this before.

Those are similar, but I never got a Blue Screen of Death, and I'm the only user on the computer, so I have no other choices for PROFILES to fool around with mine. Anything I do is reset when I RESTART or put the computer to sleep.b00t to safe mode thats all I know for now. This might help

Solve : Window sizes and resizing?

Answer»

A few weeks ago my ferret ran accross my KEYBOARD and did something to change the popup window size. When I CLICK on a hyperlink the window that comes up is 1 by 2 inches and I always have to maxamize to see anything. How/Where do I go to permanently resize the window? I've tried dragging the window manually (which worked with 98) but I have XP and that doesn't seem to work.Windows and the programs running within Windows should remember the last state and size of the window the next time it is open. OFTEN simply maximizing the window within the program and then closing and re-opening the program should make it open maximized the next time you open it.

If this does not resolve the issue we'll need some additional information. I'd assume since you said hyperlink that this is happening in a BROWSER. Is this Internet Explorer and what version is it?

Thanks and maybe it's time you get your ferret a computer of his own. The computer isn't remembering the size of the window when I change it. I'll resize, than close and open it again and it comes up small everytime. It happens in Internet Explorer and in Firefox. Both are the current versions but I don't remember the exact numbers for them...

Ferret now has his own computer and is quite happy with it. Open troubled window. Maximize it.
Hold CTRL button, click File, then Exit. Release CTRL.
Re-open window. Is it maximized now?
nice one broni....If I remember correctly, it's been M$ problem since Win 95, and they were never able to correct it.
Same old crap in Vista.

Solve : Installing Windows XP and Vista?

Answer»

Hey there, Im having some problems installing Windows on my Toshiba Satellite A100 Laptop.

When installing vista, one of two things happens.
1) During installation an ERROR will come up saying some files are missing on the disc
2) Installation goes smoothly, but when windows boots for the first time an error COMES up saying a file is missing or corrupt (It says a different file after each install )

Thinking it was a result of a corrupt disc, I bought XP and...

When installing XP, during setup an error similar to number 1 for Vista came up, saying a hole bunch of files are missing.

I have been forced to be running Ubuntu, which is working perfectly, why won't windows Install?

- ThankyouSee Microsoft KB article 930890Not sure thats the same issue. Im doing a clean install of windows not upgrading. My hard drive is whiped when these errors occur. And the files are .DLL files (mostly), not music files for example like that article says.Where did you buy those Vista/XP CDs?
Return them?I dont think its the discs because I get simliar errors from my 2 recovery DVDs, which have worked perfectly in the past.If you're sure it's not the actual discs the other 2 culprits that cause this are RAM problems or HDD issues...
DLoad and run MemTest to check the RAM...let it run for a few hours. ANY errors and the RAM is bad.
For the HDD DLoad and run the DIAGNOSTICS from the HDD manuf. site. This will tell you if the drive is HEALTHY...

my system is FAIRLY new, Windows Vista.

Solve : Automatic Updates fail to install?

Answer»

I have a PC running Windows XP Pro, validated copy used on this machine only.
2gig Ram, 70gig Hard drive, AMD dual core.
I have been unable to successfully install Microsoft downloaded updates since last month and it's driving my nuts.
I just found an article on this forum that offered some promise: I "cleaned up the Windows Update temp folder, Reintalled Windows Update agent 3.0, and removed and reinstalled Windows installer 3.1.
I can include both a Windows update log and a Hijack this log if that will help.
When clicking on the yellow shield in the tool bar I constantly get 2 files that have been downloaded to install. I click and they go through the install process but fail to install every single TIME. One is a cumulative update the other a security patch.
I have Trend Micro Internet Security 07 running, SpyBot, SuperAntispyware. None find any virus or other malware. I have AdAware waiting to be installed but it will not complete installation either.
Please let me know if the above mentioned log file will help.
Thanks
Old Bear and twice as grouchy right now!Did you try to access M$ updates site, and download those updates manually.
Surely, post both logs.Yes I have.
Interestingly enough I was able to get an update for Office 2003 to install.
I have a HotFix KB935448-x86-enu waiting on my desktop to install as well. After each new thing I have attempted I have tried re-installing the cumulative, security, and HotFix updates with no luck. They grind away. The PROGRESS bar goes forward and then I get the "install Failed".
Oh by the way, regarding my computer specs: that was 2Meg of Ram not 2gig. Sorry.
I'm not exactly a computer Guru.
Sure would like to get this mess fixed. I also went on the Update sight and let it change my stetting to automatic install as well as download. But that didn't help. I still have the yellow shield in the task bar with the two files waiting to be successfully installed.
Thanks for your reply - This is what I'd do.
Disable Automatic Updates.
Reboot to Safe Mode. Try to install your Hotfix from there.
If it installs, reboot to Normal Mode.
Go to M$ site, and let it scan your computer for necessary updates. If there are non, turn your Automatic Updates on, if you wish.
However, many people, including myself, don't use Automatic Updates.
I rather wait with a new update for a week, or so, checking some boards, like this one, if any signs of people having problems with that particular update. If I don't see any signs of trouble, I go to M$ site to download an update, manually. My husband is having the problem with updates not installing. Mine don't either, but I am at the point where I don't care. I have wasted too many hours trying to solve the problem. He has about 85 that need to be installed. He upgraded from Windows 2000 to XP SP2. He clicks on his yellow shield. It says it is installing and then he gets the error message that they couldn't be installed and it doesn't really explain how to fix the issue. I am not sure I understood some of the responses. I am trying to help him but we're both at our wits' end. Can someone help? Please?LOLO53
You need to make a separate post about your problem. To the best of my ability to explain this mess, this is what I have done so far at the recommendation of several sources, this being perhaps the most easy to understand so far:
I have attempted to install some of the offending update files and the MSInstaller both in normal and safe mode. Amazingly some of the random files installed while others would not.
I cleaned up the Windows Update Temp folder by going to Run, cmd, typing "Net stop WuAuServ, enter. Then Run, typing "%windir% and renaming SoftwareDistribution to 'Old'. and restarting WuAuServ again.
I reinstalled Windows Update Agent 3.0 I saved it of C: and then went to Run, typed C:WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe /wufource. I BELIEVE it installed successfully.
Still the updates will not install.
The ones M$ is trying to install are a cumulative update for IE7 (KB939653) and an XP security update (KB927891)
These will not install. under any circumstances I have attempted.
Further I have downloaded an ran "Dial-a-Fix" . I did most of the pre-run checks. Was not able to figure out how to do the memory check.
At any rate I am still unable to install. I can download, but not install.
THISis the interesting part now:
While running Dial-a-fix several times and once in safe mode I did note that it was unable to complete MSI (Windows Installer) portion. I kept getting dialog box that said "Insufficient system resources exist to complete the requested service".
I cannot get it to complete an installation either from Automatic Updates or directly from the web site. I RECEIVE the same message.
SOOOoooo, I am assuming that it's all about the Microsoft Windows Installer.
It does not show up in the add/remove programs list. - It's not there and I can't seem to get it to install.
However I know it WAS there somewhere in this maze of attempted fixes but stuff still would not install.
I just turned on Autoupdate again - and now installer is the only thing waiting to be installed but the checked box appears to be grayed. I tried letting it install with - again, no luck. For all I know I got things in the wrong place or who knows what. I can send log files again if that will help.
Like the lady who you told to start her own topic I have invested a lot of wasted time in this effort but unlike her I am not content to just ignore it. I want things to work properly.
Therefore I await more offers of help. I am not keen on the idea of doing a repair install of XP or worse yet a complete hard drive format.
Thanks again
Old Bear
Next thing to try is to use Windows Installer CleanUp Utility:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301

I assume, you're using IE to perform all those actions. Do you have Firefox installed, as well?Following this procedure usually works for me, sounds like you've done the first part already.

1. Clean up Windows Update temporary folder

1.1. Click Start, Run, type: cmd and press Enter. Please run the following command in the opened window.

Net stop WuAuServ

1.2. Click Start, Run, type: %windir% and press Enter.

1.3. In the opened folder, rename the folder SoftwareDistribution to Sdold.

1.4. Click Start, Run, type: cmd and press Enter. Please run the following command in the opened window.

Net start WuAuServ

2. Reinstall Windows Update Agent 3.0

2.1. Download the file from the following link:
http://download.windowsupdate.com/v7/windowsupdate/redist/standalone/WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe

2.2. Save the file to C: drive Root (C:)

2.3. Click Start, Run, type: "C:WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe /wuforce" (without quotations) and then press Enter to install the Windows Update engine. (There is a space between "C:WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe" and "/wuforce")

Note: If you are using Windows Vista, please save the downloaded file to the D: drive, because the file cannot be launched directly from the C: root directory.

3. Reinstall Windows Installer 3.1 (important)

3.1. Press Start and choose Run.

3.2. Type in "cmd" (without quotation marks) and press OK.

3.3. In the command line, type in the following command and press Enter:
MSIexec /unregister (Note: there is a space before the “/”)

3.4. Then, type in the following command and press Enter:
MSIexec /regserver (Note: there is a space before the “/”)

4. Now, try running updates again. If they still fail, then you’ll need to do a reinstall of Windows Installer:

4.1. Start, click Control Panel, and click Add/Remove Programs to check if Windows Installer 3.1 has been installed.

4.2. If it has, highlight and remove it.

4.3. After that, reinstall Windows Installer 3.1 from the following link.
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=889482fc-5f56-4a38-b838-de776fd4138c&DisplayLang=en
Hi,
I have done all you instructed.
Now the only update that comes up to install from Automatic Updates IS the Windows Installer 3.1.
When I click on the install shield I see that the check marked box next to the file to be installed is grayed out and I can't un-check it or do anything with it. As usual the install fails.
I also downloaded to my desktop and it will not install from there either in Safe or Normal mode.
I ran Dial-a-Fix and noted that when attempting to repair MSI when it got to re-registering the program it brought up a dialog box. I have included the screen shot here in an attached file. Sending the recommended email only resulted in a non-delivery notice.
I am currently on the verge of gathering all my software and backing up files in preparation for a complete clean re-install of the OS.
Speaking of which. I have a fully legitimate authenticated copy of Window XP Pro. How do I tell if it's 32 or 64 or whatever 'bits' it is?
Thanks very much for your help - it was nicely done and clear. I also did go into the registry and make sure I had full permissions by being certain my machine name and 'Administrator' appeared in the appropriate (I think) locations.
Again - thanks. I'll wait a while to see if I get any further response and ideas to try today before wading in to a complete re-installation of my OS.
Old Bear
PS: I have both IE 7, and FireFox. I vastly prefer using FireFox but some things I do REQUIRE the use of IE 7.

[getting disk space - attachment deleted by admin]As for your Windows Installer issue, you may try this solution:
http://icrontic.com/forum/showthread.php?t=43676
Post #3.

Then, for further Windows Updates...
I don't use IE at all. I use:
http://windizupdate.com/
for Firefox.
Oh, and I don't use Automatic Updates, at all.

Further, you may want to run TCP Optimizer:
http://www.speedguide.net/downloads.php
to check, and correct your connection settings.I've been having the same problem but I don't get a message saying the update failed, however, the update shield is always there and when I click on it it always shows "windows found one update available." It's always the same update. Also have a problem with HP updates. They always fail. pepper
Welcome aboard
You need to start new topic about your problem. Thanks.

Solve : A number of programs do not respond on my Vista?

Answer»

I don't know what I did, but lots of my programs are not RESPONDING ex: itunes, adobe premiere pro, ETC and there are a couple of programs not fuctioning right, firefox opens but does not allow me to serf the net like my explorer does, which i don't like explorer-also windows movie maker does TAKE MOD FILES from my HD Camera but it plays the videos blank with no sound except for 3 seconds of the video. The videos play fine on windows media player but i don't understand why the movie maker is not reading MOD files correctly. I have MOD codecs installed here. I got a bunch of problems going on my computer, I'm thinking of reinstalling it for the 5th time. I might have deleted files that might have screwed up my computer but i didn't delete anything that I NEVER installed on my computer manually, no drivers or anything like that. Just things like itunes and adobe premiere pro only to make the programs work again, it's too confusing. Anyone know a easy way to find out what the problem is with a computer, like maybe a program that searches your computer and sees what's missing to make programs work?Wow that's quite a paragraph there...
Can you post some specific important info such as what OS, machine specs, and what happened prior to this other than randomly deleting things ? ?
The more info provided the sooner the fix arrives usually.Have you ever got any of these programs to work before?

How long have you got vista?

Solve : hp dvd + cd write help?

Answer»

but i am using dvd-r disks.. it wont work even if i try to write or burn OK...
What exactly happens when you put blank DVD in?
You may need to update your DVD drive driver. What is exact brand, and model of your COMPUTER?
It's HP, right? What model?my computer is a window XP, Hp Media Center Edition

say like i want to write something onto the dvd, i put a empty dvd in my dvd drive. so i drop my files in the dvd icon in my computer, then i CLICK on write, and then it pops out with a box saying i need to insert an empty disc in my dvd drive.

i also tried with the sonic recordnow! version 6. on the upper top it says HP DVD+RW (E:) please insert a disc, when i insert my blank dvd it doesnt show much space i have in the disc. when i click onto burn, it says no blank disc was in the drive. it works for a cd though.. does that mean i dont have a dvd burner? but then under my device manager it says i do.. the DVD Writer 400cIf we want to find a driver for that DVD drive, "Hp Media Center Edition" won't work as your computer model.
It has to be a model, and a model number, like "HP Pavilion 2300", for instance. With todays computer, it should say on front panel.haha sorry its hp media center pc m470nOK...for future reference, your official computer name, and model is: "HP Media Center m470n"
I'm just reading your DVD drive manual...
I'll be back with you in a moment. After reading your manual....

On your computer, you have two preinstalled programs to play with your CDs, and DVDs. Both available through Start>All Programs

RecordNow!
• Record data and MUSIC files.
• Record a copy of an existing music or data CD to use on the PC.
• Create customized music CDs from CDs in your collection, or from WAV, MP3, or WMA files.
These CDs can be played in your home or car stereo.
• Copy and share data files.
• Copy short video files.
NOTE: Video files recorded with RecordNow! can be viewed on a PC but not on home DVD video
players.

ArcSoft ShowBiz 2
• Capture digital and analog video files directly from a digital video (DV) camera, VCR, or other
analog capture device in a few steps.
NOTE: Your PC may not include an analog capture device.
• Assemble movies by capturing video clips and scenes into your video project.
• Edit your movies. Cut scenes and add music and SOUND effects, still images, text, video
transitions, and voice-overs.
• Preview movies during editing and before recording final files.
• Create video files, export them to your hard disk drive, to your digital video camera, to a VHS
tape or to an e-mail file, and then play them on your PC.
• Create video files, record them to DVDs and CDs, and then play them on some set-top DVD
players.
• Record video files to VCDs and DVDs.
• Create MPEG files.

Now THREE very important things:

- Make sure you select the correct drive before
recording. RecordNow! selects the first optic
drive it finds
, but you can select the drive in
RecordNow! before you begin recording.
In your case drive E (regular CD ROM) is first, so you have to make sure, you select drive F, which is your DVD
writer.

- RecordNow! can record only to the same disc type
it records from. For example, you can record a
DVD only to a DVD+R or DVD+RW disc, and you
can record a CD only to a CD-R or a CD-RW disc.
I think, you were using DVD-R, so it won't work.

- Lastly, you have to make sure Direct Memory Access (DMA) on your PC is enabled. It may be enabled by default, but you have to double check.
Here is how:

How To Enable the DMA Setting On Your Hard Disk Drive
# Go into your Control Panel by first clicking on the Start Button.
# Then click on Settings and then click on the Control Panel icon.
# Then Double click on the System icon to open up the System Properties window.
# Then click on the Device Manager tab at the top of the screen.
# Now click on the plus sign (+) next to the Disk drives Icon to expand that section.
# Double click on your IDE Disk Drive to display the Properties Window.
# Then click on the Settings Tab located at the top of the screen.
# Within the Options section, You will see a white box next to DMA.
# Placing a check mark into this white box will enable the high SPEED DMA transfer setting.
# Clearing an existing check mark from this white box will disable the DMA transfer setting.
# Then click on the OK button at the bottom of the screen to save your settings.
# And then click on OK to exit the System Properties Window.
# Select Yes when Windows Prompts you to Restart your Computer now.
# Repeat the above procedure on any additional Hard Drives you have in your system.

How To Enable The DMA Setting On Your CD/DVD Rom Drive
# Go into your Control Panel by first clicking on the Start Button.
# Then click on Settings and then click on the Control Panel icon.
# Locate the System icon and Double click on it to open up the System Properties window.
# Then click on the Device Manager tab at the top of the screen.
# Now click on the plus sign (+) next to the CD ROM Icon to expand that section.
# Double click on your CD Rom Drive to display the Properties Window.
# Then click on the Settings tab at the top of the screen.
# Repeat the above procedure on any additional CD/DVD Rom Drives you have in your system.

Good luick!wow you're amazing! thank you for that. wow there is a difference between dvd-r and dvd+r.. maybe that is why i cant use it. ill try get dvd+r and try and see if it works. thank you very much! You are welcome
I HOPE, that's the culprit, but it looks like.
Don't forget about writing to drive F, not Eoh im wondering like my dvd burner can burn can also burn dvd+r when its a dvd+rw right?Yes. Simply speaking "+" writer will write to any "+" media, DVD, or CD.

Solve : vista and win 98?

Answer»

Hello.
I have a small question.
I Have windows vista on my laptop, but it uses quite alot of my computers resources. Namly i have 1 gb of ram, and windows is using 50% of it all the time.
i was thinking, if i would install windows 98 on my laptop too, then gaming with win 98, would be better?
and is it possible to install vista and 98 on the same system?

THANKS, for any help.what games? and you would have to reformat and make a new partition for 98, but lets see what OTHERS have to saysnakebite99,see post "windows forum" "coincident operating SYSTEMS by truenorth. good luck, truenorthLaptops are not exactly tweaked for gaming...Windows will use all the RAM it needs to do what it does so don't freak about 50% when gaming.

You can also shut off all items in the TRAY before running a gaming session ....this should free up some resources.

Win 98 would need to be installed before Vista so you would be looking at a complete wipe of the system and an install of Win98 then Vista.......think about it, that's alot of effort.

On top of that if you are still considering this approach you would need to do some research to find available Win98 drivers. And for a newer laptop you might run into nothing but roadblocks.

Let us know. And the games may require more than Win98 to even run. You were already asked what games but didn't respond.

If 1 gig of RAM doesn't GET it, Win98 is not the answer. You have other issues.thanks for the replys
i guess i'm going to stick with vista then. it's not worth the effort.

but are there any ways to increase the system preformance in vista anyway?
(games like Need For Speed:Carbon(actually thats all i play))
Will upgrading drivers improve the preformance(sp?)?y would you want to play a game like that on win98 i dont even think it can...

maybe some one whos uses vista may be able to tell you but i dont use it

Solve : Vista's Partition Magi?

Answer»

I was reading about vistas feature to resize partions from disk management pretty straight foward but what if I WANTED to go back to one big partition is there a way to reclaim unalocated space?? Thanx in Adv.Yes.
I assume you already have entered the Disk Manager tool

BTW: I am really multitasking... so if I dont get the message of what to over very well, please tell me

Down below, under the drive list, there is a selection of all the partitions (it looks kind of like a timeline)

Right click on the partition that you no longer want, and click Delete (or click Shrink, if you just want it smaller)
Now right click on the partition that you want bigger, and click "Extend"
Adjust as needed from there.

VISTA does not include Partition Magic...they are 2 DIFFERENT things.thanx Zylstra good to know... I know Vista doesn't have partition magic but I thought they were both simalarSee, Vista has good features, Patio.

fat_basterd21, I should probably mention:
Dont remove your SWAP partition, if you can SEE it. (Or any system partitions, for that matter)

Solve : VISTA UAC...?

Answer»

Hi hopers

I'm having a problem with Sage Line 50 (accounting software) on Vista.

Despite the fact that the developers of sage are microsoft gold partners and sage is (supposedly) certified for vista I can't seem to stop UAC flashing up (asking for the admin pword) when I open sage in a users profile. I believe this to be because sage does not specify its publisher in the app metadata, can I ADD this in or is it a case of waiting for a sage update which will do this?

Any ideas or similar problems please reply

Cheers

Ben
UKwhat version of vista? does it do it to any othere software? has it always done thisI would contact sage...perhaps they have released a PATCH for this dilemna...Its running Vista Business

We CONTACTED sage and despite the fact that they claim Sage Line 50 is Vista certified they recomended that we downgrade back to XP.

Not only does UAC jump around like a looney when you open the program, but you also cannot enter any dates into the system, create data backups or PERFORM many other standard functions.

So basically sage is not in anyway Vista compatible, and going on the previous CATALOGUE of problems with their software I'd say its likely to be 2-3 years before they sort it out, no joke...

Post back if you have any more info, similar problems.

Solve : Problem with reinstalling Vista?

Answer»

Yeasterday I have bought a new notebook ( HP Pavilion dv6000) with windows vista in it already, without the cd. During the INSTALLATION the power was cut off. When I turned the computer on again there was an error: the installation can not be finished. Please reboot the computer and reinstall Vista. But when I reboot nothing happens and the error APPEARS again. What am I suppose to do? Is there any way to start the instalation again? I can't give it BACK to the shop as I bought it in another city.I;m not sure i understand correctly...if the LAPTOP came with Vista already why was it being INSTALLED ? ?
If the power is cut off to a laptop the battery should prevent data loss...

At any rate if it were mine i would be taking it back under warranty, even if it is in another city...

Solve : Vista to XP?

I just got a Toshiba Satellite a135s2276 500mg ram 1.6 dual-core laptop and was not impressed that it had to be VISTA... So I was wondering how hard it would be to go back to Xp, if it would be trial and error or if there was a WAY to find out if its even possible at this point...Why not Leave vista on the PC until SP2 comes out.
Its possible to install XP as a second OS.

Jonas I would start by going to the Toshiba site and see if drivers are even available for XP. Did you get a Vista DVD to reinstall with if you change your mind, or would it be gone for good? (Please ignore the previous post up there. )Thanx GX1, I didnt get an install dvd and sadly I wasn't surprised. I did get a recover disk does this mean formating would erase for good without the chance of reinstalation?

OK, Jonas, it's your turn. How EXACTLY would he do this?Fist install VistaBootPro to manage the boot process.
then insert the disk and instal the OS.

Jonas
And you have done this successfully?

Have you tied a System Restore to a point before you made this mistake?alright here is how I have done it:
It worked OK for me But you need the WIN XP CD.
(if you have already removed it then reinstall VTP 6.0.)this is really necessary.Dload here
1: Dload and install Ccleaner.Dload here
2: remove the Transformation pack.
Look careful while you are uninstalling because you can remove everything

I've kept the pointers.
You will also have the opportunity to recover XP from the CD Use that-one
3: Run Ccleaner > issue part. (it will S&D 32 issues of transformation pack.)
4: Reboot
5: Use System File Checker: Start/Run; type "SFC /scannow" and hit Enter.
6: Reboot
If you want to repair you incon cache
Dload Tweak UI at See here

Solve : VISTA EXPRESS UPGRADE TIP...microsoft quirks?

Answer»

Hi Hopers

You just have to love microsoft for the SIMPLE weirdness of this "Vista feature"

Those who have recieved the Vista "Express" Upgrade from XP may have noticed that the installer will not allow you to enter a product key when booting from the disk and ATTEMPTING to perform a clean install.

This is because the product key supplied is for "Upgrades" only. When you then boot the new install it'll ask you for a VALID product key or will cease to function after 30 days.

However you dont have to upgrade from XP. If you then run a vista upgrade from within Vista it will allow you to use your upgrade key and activate with no PROBLEMS. And you wont lose any settings or drivers that you set up prior to running to second install.

Interesting solution from the redmond boys...

Solve : Vista may have an infection?

Answer»

I purchased a HP Pavillion dv9310 notebook computer. It has Vista installed on it. I let a family FRIEND use the computer ( I know---a very stupid move!!!). Now my new computer will not start up. It goes through the boot sequence and that is it. The computer seems to die. I tried starting it in safe MODE and that does not work.

The computer keeps stopping on a particular driver: \windows\system32\drivers\crcdisk.sys.

I need to know how to prevent this driver from loading and get my system running again.

I think the computer in infected with a virus (what's new).

Please help me!!!!

Don't be too quick to blame your friend; this appears to be a common problem with Vista. Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be a general solution for it.

Have you tried booting with the Vista DVD?

I'm not sure if Vista has Recovery Console, but you can give it a shot (INFORMATION here). If you can, open Recovery Console by pressing F10 or R at the Welcome To Setup screen when you boot with the Windows CD. When Recovery Console opens up, try running chkdsk /r (just type it in and hit Enter). Let us know the outcome.

Do you have another OS disk you can try booting with?Seems to be a SATA driver issue as per this post from another site:

"You MAY need to update the drivers for your drives. the .sys reveals that
this is a driver issue.
locate or contact the manufacturer of your device and see if they have and
updated driver for your drives.
Next during the upgrade if asked if you would like to install and third
party drive select F6 or any other KEY select the option and insert the disk
with the drivers.

This should resolve the issue

com/index.cgi"

Alan <>< I have a XP setup CD. Can I use that to access recovery console. I will have to look real hard for the Vista CD.

You need to track down your SATA drivers as Alan pointed out...Visited the HP site. Unable to find out if there are any update drivers since their instructions are to install one of their programs to see if the computer needs an update. How am I able to do that since the computer won't boot up?

HP is nuts.

Is their another way?

I seriously doubt that HP sent a Vista DVD with the machine. That is not their style.

I assume it is still under warranty. If so, now is the time to use it. THis may be a hardware problem (as well as software) that is probably well beyond your ability to fix. Nor should you have to.

Solve : Very strange problem with Windows Vista?

Answer»

Problem solved!

It was a faulty ram chip. I talked to tech SUPPORT and he recommended REMOVING ONE of the ram chips since I have 2, and seeing if anything changed. Works just great now, and best of all, it's covered under warranty- I just have to send the chip back and they send me a new one. Now, I just wish I had known this before I axed windows and lost a lot of my data and settings. hehExercise that warranty PRONTO...

You could RUN the HDD manuf. diagnostics on that drive to determine it's well being...

How did you format that drive and did the operation complete itself ? ?

Solve : Win XP will not come up with new mother board and processor?

Answer»

I up graded my processor from a P 4 3.2 hyperthreading to a core duo E6600. The intel motherboard chip set is 6965, and is vista ready

My hard DRIVE with win xp SERV pac 2 works with my existing setup but It will not boot with the new motherboard and processor. Some times it gets to the win START up screen the crashes with a blue screen. Other times it goes to the screen normal mode safe mode etc. But no matter which I select to goes to the win start up screen then crashes after flashing the blue screen which advises to check for viruses. I have two hard drives with windows xp installed and each one crashed in the new system but runs perfectly in my current system. My system is checked for viruses every Friday and I did a manual check before installing the drive into the new system.

Any ideas

Tomdid it do this the very first once u upgradephayres ....... I suspect the issue is that you have a new MOBO and a new processor.......... Per Microsofts license agreement, you are only allowed to have XP installed on one machine...... I would think the solution would be to contact MICROSOFT , explain to them that you have replaced the mobo as well as the processor and that you legit xp will only be installed on the new system......... Then you would format the hard drive and do a clean install of XP on the new system. The alternative of course would be to purchase a new copy of XP and install it on the new system.
I could be wrong , but it sounds like what you are trying is piracy.........

dl65 Even if you have a version of XP that doesn't need activation like XP corporate, it probably still won't boot with a new motherboard. You need to do a full new install.

Yes from the very start. The new set up is not connected to the internet, hence I thought Micrososft would give a warning that I had 10 days to activate it or the xp will cease to function.

I am trying not to reinstall win xp at least untill the system is up and running. Because if it still will not run I will then have to reinstall windows on my current system. I can't AFFORD that much down time. But if that is the only way I guess I will have to do that. That is the best approach. If you wait for it to magically work, you will have a long wait.

Thanks for all the info. My computer was purchased from a private person. It has an AMD Athlon XP 2000 1.66 GHZ Processor, 511 mb ram. The system is 32 bit. Hard drive is 37.2 gb with 10.2 gb free. It is Windows Vista Ultimate 6.0.5600 Build 5600 operating system. It did not come with a CD for Windows. So I can get a Windows Basic or Ultimate upgrade and INSTALL it?? Do I have to do a clean install?? If I do, how can I back up my files?? Thanks again. I am sorry to ask so many questions but I am new at trying to install an operating system.I think you have a non-legitimate copy. You need to quote the serial number off the install CD or at least insert it, to activate the upgrade. Guess you'll have to shell out some $$$. You mat find that a full install DISK will offer to upgrade you, but burn your files to DVD while the thing is still working.

Or partition the disk and move them to your new drive letter.

A heads up:
Your computer is only compatible with Vista Basic at the moment.

If you upgrade your RAM to 1GB, you will be able to use Vista Home Premium

im still getting the stop errors and the hangs... mostly if i use any kind of p2p software
the BSOD i get most is "driver irql less than or equal" from nvenetfd.sys which is part of the nforce drivers its the ethernet bit...

ive run torture tests on all the hardware including the RAM at 90% utilisation (10 processes at 9% each) and got 118 billion error free RESULTS....

i have noticed when i did the full install of windows vista it put a foulder called windows.OLD

so can anyone help

Some versions of Vista will only do a full install. In any case, it is so buggered up now, probably a reinstall of the appropriate OS will be required. Your old Windows install MAY be in that folder (what is inside) but the booting instructions, ETC. will be for Vista.

Are you the original purchaser of that machine? If so, HP may be willing to send you a restore CD. You didn't make backup discs when the machine was new?GX1_Man is correct,of course. The 2 below links are an
alternative possibility.

You want to have both OS under a dual boot configuration, so you need a full version of Vista. ok thanks soybean i was just MAKING sureWhy waste your hard earned money on this Vista crap? Try LINUX, it's free, you will have fewer headache in long run. Plus there are tons of free open source programs available for download, programs like Gimp, OpenOffice... they are just as good, if not better then Photoshop and MSOffice. Plus you can make your machine dual bootable so that you can still keep your XP. There are many distros of Linux, I use Ubuntu and I am pretty happy with it. Solve : Problem Installing Adobe Acrobat Reader 8 On Windows Vista Basic?

Answer»

In attempting to install Adobe Acrobat Reader 8 on a friend's computer running Windows Vista Basic with 512mb, I get the following Windows Installer error MESSAGE: "The Temp folder is on a drive that is full or is inaccessible. Free up space on the drive or verify that you have permission on the Temp folder. OK" The Temp folder is located in the Windows folder on the "C" drive, as it should be. The 106G "C" drive has 77.4G free. I deleted most of the files in the Temp folder and ATTEMPTED to install Acrobat Reader, but the same error message pops up. The file attributes of the Temp folder are "read only." Even when I uncheck "read only" and click OK, the attribute reverts back to "read only." I do not think that has anything to do with my installation problem. I am logged on as an Administrator. This is the first time I have encountered this message in any of my INSTALLATIONS. I have been able to install other programs on this computer with no problems. Does anyone have a solution to this installation problem?Travel to Adobe's site and grab the uninstaller and run it...it's common for Adobe products to refuse to install if the original install was BOTCHED.

Solve : VITSA RESTORE?

Answer»

I just purchased a NEW notebook with VISTA. I had a problem and wanted to go BACK in time but RESTORE will not work. I tried several restore points I had set, but none WORKED. Well, that's PRETTY minimal and vague information. What was the difficulty Do you not have a restore or REINSTALL DVD? What manufacturer?
