Solve : Windows Vista Home Premium & PS/2 Mouse and Keyboard?

Answer»

I have SONY Desktop model number VGC-RC110G which came with Windows XP Home about a year AGO. Recently, I purchased Windows VISTA Home Premium and did a clean install. Since I have limited number of USB ports on my computer, I would like to continue to use my mouse and keyboard using PS/2 PORT. However, when I plug in my mouse and keyboard using PS/2, they don't work at all. But when I connect them using USB, they work fine. What are the things that I need to look into to fix this problem? What type of DRIVER should I upgrade so that I can use my mouse and keyboard using PS/2 on my SONY VGC-RC100G? Can someone please HELP me with this problem? Please.... I need help.

Solve : Vista error message?

Answer»

I have a Dell E520 with windows. After I installed Vista, when I start up I get error message "update manager" # 5 installshield. How can I get the message to go away? Thank YouI'm running Windows Vista and Internet Explorer browser. Didn't it come with Vista pre-installed ? ?
If so what led you to a re-install ? ?

More info...This issue is probably related with the version of Roxio CD burning software that CAME with your series, it is incompatible with Windows Vista (the driver that comes with it is) and it can cause this issue.

Check out www.dell.com and click Support and click "Downloads and More"
enter (or have it find) your model number, and download the updates it has there. I bought the Dell COMPUTER in Feb. with Windows installed but got a free up grade to Vista. I installed Vista last week when I got it.I went to Dell downloads, there are about 20. What do I need? Can you post the link to the Dell web page where you SEE those 20 ITEMS?Found a patch at Dell That worked. So that other people who search the forums with similar problems know, could you please TELL us the name of the patch?

Solve : Change Desktop Theme In Windows Vista?

Answer»

I copied a jpeg picture in the Windows\Web\Wallpaper folder and WANT to make it the Desktop Theme. I right-clicked on the Desktop and selected Personalize. I then selected Desktop BACKGROUND. For Picture Location I selected Windows Wallpaper. The picture appears in the window. I selected the picture and clicked OK. However, the picture does not appear as the Desktop Theme. I went through this PROCESS a number of times, selecting the same picture, as well as DIFFERENT PICTURES in the Wallpaper folder, with the same result. For the record, I am able to change the Desktop Theme color. The computer is a very basic model: Compac Celeron 3.2G running Windows Vista Basic with 512mb. Can anyone offer a solution?can you browse to a location when you go to personalize? if so try doing it from the desktop(put the pic on the desktop)Does Vista have the Winows Picture And Fax Viewer? If so, try opening a picture, right-clicking on it, and going to Set As Desktop Picture.

Solve : Formatting Windows XP Before installing Vista?

Answer»

Hi,
okay I will try to MAKE this quick and clear.
Christmas i bought my daughter a new computer. (windows xp home ed.)
She is GOOD with comps, or was before the teen aged hormones hit.
She had a virus on the comp.
Tried to clean it.
did not work. I am in another country so can't be there to do it myself.
So i simplified and just bought VISTA.
I would like to confirm the directions for formatting her comp before installing Vista on it.
The simpler the reply the better, as i will be relaying the into to her.
Thanks in advance.
so you bought vista to fix the virus?no evidently not.
i was planning on upgrading anyway
there is nothing on the comp to keep anyway.
so it kills two birds with one stone, so to sayis it an upgrade version or the full version of vistathe full vista of course.
i am basically going to tel her to open the bios and check the comp to boot from the c drive.
then stick the vista in and restart.

am i missing anything, or anyone have other suggestionsnope thats pretty much it, i think when it comes to installing vista..

just make sure the computer components are compatiable with vista to check go here to check compatiablitymtmuller ....... Quote

i am basically going to tel her to open the bios and check the comp to boot from the c drive.
then stick the vista in and restart.

Did you mean to say, set the boot sequence to c: drive ............. ( that is usually a hard drive) or ......
set the boot sequence to cd-rom as first boot ,then put vista in the cd-rom and restart ?

dl65 Then during setup when prompted tell her to choose delete the existing partition and then choose create new partition...this will get rid of anything that was on that drive...dl65 and patio yes can we pull all the directions together.
I need them clearer
I am currently in Italy, and my husbands comp is completely pirated. (it appears to be a bit of an italian tradtion as even blockbuster here sells pirated musc cds, or at least the one i go to) As well as the language being in italian, which is great for my husband, but irksome for myself. And not everything translates directly.
Its also not the same version so its imposible for me to tell her exactly what and where she should look.
She is pretty good, just nearly 15 and gets irritated EASILY, so the more point blank the directions the better.

Currently she has done a system restore and things are working fine. but my husband is a water bomber pilot and he is already now in Istanbul, and i am going soon. I PREFER everything to be content and happy in my household in Canada, while I am away and before she begins her summer vacations. I like to be prepared. As my Mother, uses the internet to shop and dislikes having her shopping days interupted. (she found ebay)

Thanks in advance. Click Here for a decent step-by step guide to installing Vista. Once you have given her the info on booting to CD she can start here.
Microsofts page was more written for techies and this one is easier to understand. It's more than one page so have her get familiar with it before she even starts. She could also print it out just in case...Thanks so much.
I will put everything together on my end before she starts and ensure she has copies as well. Those water bomber pilots are so brave and they do such a good job. I see Canadairs in action in France and Italy every summer, with global warming they are going to be busier in future I think.

The Canadairs are awesome planes.
There is a sticker on the inside door of one of the ones that Italy has sent to Istanbul that says 'We put out'.
My husband is Italian, but speaks english to me, so he understood the double meaning and was able to relate it to the others.
Frankly its a wonderful change from having him fly airliners. I was right sick of that.
The one he is flying In Turkey this year, is a piston engine. Not an easy thing to fly. They are older models without 'power' steering.

Solve : Problems, Episode II: Attack of the Crash?

Answer»

Yes, SpeedFan does have a panel that can be used for overclocking on some systems but that can simply be ignored. The initial screen that appears when SpeedFan is opened shows the temperature info along with fan speeds and voltage readings. And, that screen is really all many users may need or be interested in. In that case, I don't see much learning curve; just install it and open it to view the default screen.

Again, I agree that PC WIZARD looks like a very nice program, based on the extensive information on the website. My point was that, if he mainly wants to monitor temperature, an extensive system reporting tool like PC WIZARD does much more than that and may be more than he wants.

I have Everest Home Edition installed and it tells me the same info that SpeedFan tells me. But, it does not display a temperature value in the system tray and allow for easy temperature monitoring that way. My system tray shows this:

If I double click on the temp to open SpeedFan, I see:

So, it's a quick and easy way to get temperature info.I think we have Hijacked this post soybean

I know and you know they don't need to do anything else with the SpeedFan
But... we all know how curious we all are and especially less experienced users
they tend to play with things, so I try to make it a simple as can be. Like (no offense to less experienced users by any means) I am talking with my Grandmother or 7 year old son who one day SOON is going to be telling me how to do things
I think SpeedFan is a cool program and if I needed to monitor my system I would probably go that route, it is a nice program with some really nice features I would have used in the days I was OCing my PIII 700 to 933
But these days I don't play around with my machines because they have more power than I need except when I am processing video,.
Now once I get my quad core with 4 gig of ram I am sure I will be more than pleased as I look over my shoulder to make sure wife doesn't see me wanting to upgrade my 6 month old system already

Ok, I apologize for not replying sooner, but I've been busy:

When I searched for 22a71def.exe, I found 3 things. 1 being the log for the one thing you had me run, 1 being from SYSTEM32, and another from somewhere else.

Was the SYS32 one the one I am looking for?

Also, with speedfan, it appears to only find 1 fan (Which I think is all I have on this computer.) And it's at 35C, which I'm assuming is perfect temperature as it showed a check next to it

Finally, and more importantly:

AVG Free cannot update for some reason. It is now out of date. When I attempt to do it manually, about 3 seconds into searching for updates I receive a pop up that says "Search was unsuccessful" with only an OK button.

What to do?YO when it gets to the virtual memory let the computer manage the page files n try to get 1/2 GB ram to make your computer very fast n avoid putting more music caz is the one that usually makes computers run slower, but 2 GB RAM will do n try compress your disk c to increase your memoryQuote from: Imperial on May 30, 2007, 01:04:33 AM

Yes, the one in the system32 is the file you should UPLOAD to VirusTotal. As for AVG...try again later; perhaps the site is experiencing problems. Why would you think norton anti virus sucks? I have had that since I've had this computer and it still runs fast, I know very little about my computer but I don't see how something that is free would be better? I guess the other question is how do you know that since you paid your money how do you know THAT is better?

If you compare Norton and then AVG on a computer (not running both at the same time), you will see exactly what we are talking about. Hi,, I read all the above Posts..
Well I faced the same Problem earlier.

I turn on music and lock my computer (to prevent my mom from WAKING me up in the morning like she always tries to do) when I go to bed, and when I wake up in the morning 7-9 hours later, I always see the pop up notification that update was unsuccessful.

This tells me that it's not their site, but maybe something else. Any advice/help/tips?

I can tell you he is hosting illegal key makers for Microsoft software so I would suggest to stay away and for a Forum moderator look over the site to see if it is appropriate to be here. See if you can go to the web site and download the manual updates from another computer and then transfer them to your computer with a flashdrive or CD.

As for Closefrnds' post...if the Top Ten Tips To Improve System Speed is what's being referred to, then I'd say those look like valid suggestions. However, I would expect those tips to speed up the computer's boot time more than its general performance.Quote from: TrapperX on May 31, 2007, 10:09:09 PM

Alright, I'll try this Sunday when I go over to my friend's again.

Thanks for the heads-up TrapperX/CBMatt (on Closefrnd).

Now, haha, I have another problem (and I'll edit the first post with it since the first post's problem is solved now):

My girlfriend's computer will seemingly crash and forces itself to shut down or something of that nature.

It'll happen randomly and without warning.

She's given me specs before, but I'm aware that it's an alright computer and that she's got protection (exactly what escapes me, but I believe Spybot is one of them)

In her own words what keeps happening tonight:

(her SN) (12:53:39 AM): it seems as the computer completely restarts it slef, like it shuts off then trys to turn back on.
(her SN) (12:53:52 AM): but if i am not siging of AIM then that cant be the case.

She also noted that:

well, okay, even though my computer is shutting off. AIM for some reason isnt logging me off, the minute my computer rebots it self.it took like 5minutes or so why? is my computer not completey shutting off, is it more hibernating? see i am not sure. Gr. :/

What I thought, was maybe some important process is being interrupted, or fails in some way, causing most of her computer to shut down, but not-as important programs running (like AIM or an internet browser) continue to run until the rest of the computer shuts down.

However, I'm not really computer-savvy. I know a little here and there, but nothing on a subject as this. Any help?

I'll have a lot more information if she can sign on soon, such as computer specs, protection she's got, etc.

Yet again, thank you very much
Imperial,
I'm very glad we were able to help you out with resolving your problem. For this new problem, I would suggest starting a new topic. I think it would have a better chance of being looked at that way. Someone might see the number of posts on here and assume you're getting ample help even though this is a new problem. I could be wrong, of course, but I think some of our busier members might have that sort of attitude. Also...editing your ORIGINAL post makes things a bit confusing. I only looked at your post because I saw that I had posted in it (with the new title, I didn't recognize the topic). And until I read a couple of responses, I was completely confused.

I'm sure everyone will be happy to help, but I think it would be in your best interest to start a new topic. And please get as much information from your girlfriend as possible to help things go smoothly. Specs and protection are a must, of course, as I'm sure you know. And find out if her computer actually loses power when this happens. Does it shut off? When it starts back up, are her programs still running? That's the impression I'm getting here.Haha, alright I'll just lock this then and restart.

Solve : Upgrading to Windows Vista?

Answer»

My Hp LAPTOP is CURRENTLY running Windows XP Professional, Media Center Edition, with 80GB and 512MB. I've been thinking about buying Windows Vista Home Basic and UPGRADING to it, but I can't seem to decide if I really want to. Is there really much point in it, or should I just stick to what I have? And if I did upgrade to it, what would happen to all my files and pictures and music, would they be gone or would all my stuff still be there? And also, all my computer games and stuff that was made before Vista, would they work? Thanks You actually need a modern computer to meet the
requirements to run Vista properly. Most people
who have used Vista recommend at least 1GB of
ram.

I would stay with Windows XP.

You can however download Windows Vista upgrade
advisor-->HereI think your graphic card must be UPGRADED to support Windows Vista but it is recommended that you don't upgrade as some of the programs are not compatable You can't really do much to upgrade laptops.

Solve : Vista display glitch?

Answer»

Brand new Toshiba Satellite laptop, running on Vista. Everything is fine until a minute into the "session" when a 2 inch white line appears at the very top. Annoying. Basically, some program is causing it, since it's not there when it starts. I uninstalled MacAfee (will install another) and Google bar, because they came up later, made no difference. How do I see the order that they load up so I can eliminate (possibly) the one loading up the GLITCH? I already tried reinstalling the display driver, too.

Toshiba and Microsoft are no help, bouncing me between them - Microsoft wants to charge me for support of a brand new product! when did it start??It's brand new. It started the first day I TURN it on.oh.. UMMM have you messed with you display settings??I changed the wallpaper w/ my own picture. However, my picture comes out ok, when the "background" programs finish loading up is when it starts.is it a defualt wallpaper?no. but when I put the default it's still there. In Vista, there's a feature that shows the F keys on top, that's what is causing it, I think, since I can see the "tabs" slightly. My question is, how do I turn off some FEATURES that on the start up menu? That particular feature?ummm... im not sure seeing as i dont use vista lets wait and see what other members have to sayIf it's brand new, send it back to Toshiba.
They will give you a replacement if you insist.Again, Toshiba says since the hardware is working fine, etc. Besides, I'm going away and need the computer and by the time I come back the "cool off" period will be done. I guess I have to ask Microsoft how to do it - and be told that it's a long elaborate process. Well, thanks for the input. If they tell me how to do it, I'll post it here.k to be honest how does toshiba know the hardware is good? and plus you dont have a warranty??Quote from: unlovedwarrior on June 01, 2007, 08:03:08 AM

k to be honest how does toshiba know the hardware is good? and plus you dont have a warranty??

I doubt Toshiba could determine this over the phone...unless they are the best tech's in the World.

Warranty is the way to go. Although it would be nice to have the brand new laptop for your trip it obviously has problems...if you let it go til after the trip what if they say it was damaged in transit ? ? Then you're outta luck.

Something to consider at least...Not a warranty issue. I figured out that the program that loads up causing the white line is a Toshiba program called flash cards - so not a Vista or hardware problem. The issue is that it doesn't disappear completely when it's supposed to, the white line (the very bottom of a "tab") stays on and will eventually burn the display on that spot. I'll try to uninstall the program if I can. If I can't, I'll call Toshiba and ask them how to do it - at least I HOPE so! Thanks for your input, I'm always willing to try to solve glitches by myself - with help from my friends glad you figured it out

I also got some more CD's of a differrrent brand (did not have my usual brand) since I am was almost out due to all the MESSED up disks. I tried to BURN with one of my last CD's from another brand and got the same result as before. I then tried one of the new brand CD's and it worked. I did try a second CD brand on the old burner but I HOPE I did not buy a new burner when all I needed was a 3rd brand CD. Oh well, thanks for the help Contrex.

Solve : I want my old windows back :( :( :(?

Answer»

Yesterday I got a free upgrade to Windows Vista Home Premium in the mail. I just couldn't resist it, beings I was already thinking about buying it from walmart or somewhere. So, I did it. Now my laptop is way slower than it used to be, and I really really want my Windows XP Professional Media Center EDITION BACK! Vista looks cool and all, but I really love my other. So it's either buy more memory to make Vista run properly or go back to my old, which I want to do. Question is, can I? I don't have any recovery cds with my laptop, because it has a recovery hard drive PARTION thing instead. It RESTORES the laptop back to the way it was when I bought it, and I've used it before. (Before getting Vista.) So I figured that if I didn't like Vista, that's all I would have to do. Restore. Ok so now when I go to my computer, I click on the hard drive thing that has my recovery partion, then I click on the file "RECOVERY", and it's empty. i'm really scared that i am stuck with vista. ANY help would be appreciated. By the way my laptop is a Hp PAVILION dv6000, WAS running windows xp professional media center edition. But it is now Windows Vista Home Premium lol thanks reboot press f10 to recover and see if that helps if not contact hp and order some recovery cdsRead the below site.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/925809If you can no longer see the Recovery partition than Vista has possibly hidden it or you deleted it inadvertantly when installing Vista...

Either way unlovedwarrior's suggestions are probably you're best bet.Quote from: unlovedwarrior on June 05, 2007, 05:13:22 PM

Solve : Recovery disc for vista?

Answer»

Hello. I recently bought a Sony Vaio with Windows Vista on it. It has a bunch of crap I don't WANT on it so I decided to use a recovery DISC. When I insert the disc, it comes up with a whole bunch of options including open media files and such. Does anyone know what I do?What does the menu thing say? My guess is that it's just an autorun file. The recovery CD will return the MACHINE to the way it was shipped from the factory so i don't think this is a good approach...

What exactly do you want to accomplish ? ?The menu says mostly says to play the file. but i figured that it wouldnt do any good. i am trying to get all the stuff off of my machine. i have all the stuff i actually want saved to either my email or a cd.Quote from: patio on MAY 26, 2007, 06:54:13 AM

It will end up just like when you got it - extra crappola and all.You could use Add/Remove Programs to wean it a little bit...but i'd be careful removing anything Sony related as it could render the machine un-bootable...

Solve : Four critical Windows fixes coming (Tuesday)?

Answer»

Thursday, June 07, 2007

Microsoft will release six sets of security patches next Tuesday, four of which will fix critical flaws in the Windows OPERATING system.

The critical Windows updates fix flaws in Internet Explorer, Outlook Express, Windows Mail, and other core components of the operating system, Microsoft said.

The software will be released as part of Microsoft's regular monthly security release, known informally as "Patch Tuesday." Microsoft is also planning less-critical updates for Visio and Windows Vista, the company said in a note, published today.

Microsoft considers an update critical when the flaw could be used by an attacker to remotely run UNAUTHORIZED software on the victim's machine, theoretically leading to the propagation of an Internet worm.

This MONTH, Microsoft has REVEALED a few more details on the upcoming patches than it has in the past. That's part of a new PLAN to help IT administrators better prepare for Patch Tuesday by letting them know exactly what versions of Microsoft's products will be affected by the updates.

Microsoft is slightly ahead of its 2006 patch rate. By June of 2006, the company had released 32 security updates. With these six updates, the June 2006 tally will be 35.

Last month, Microsoft released seven groups of patches on Patch TuesdayOh joy, more patches.
Thanks for the heads-up.

Solve : "the application failed to initialize properly (0Xc0000142). Click on OK to term?

Answer»

Sorry to repost this, but I didn't get any replies, and I have new information about it.

Ok, I have an Alienware Laptop(stats below) and I THINK it has an over heating problem. Because everytime I get on it to either
play WOW, or The Sims 2, or anything ELSE besides solitare or MS paint, it will run for a bit, then shut down. I have the charger
in, it works, the battery is normally at 100%. Recently I've purchased a cooling pad to place under it. Another thing is, is that
when it CRASHES, and I try to turn it on, it will almost fully boot to the logon screen,
but instead it will flash a quick error message that says:

"the application failed to initialize properly (0Xc0000142). Click on OK to terminate the application."

And then it will turn off, and reboot itself. It will continuously loop, trying to boot and reboot until I unplug the charger. I've also
noticed that it will stay on a lot longer with the charger disconnected than when it's plugged in. I'm pretty sure it's not the charger
itself, but purhaps the port, because it did this with my old charger too. If anyone has any ideas, I would really much appreciate it.
I can't afford to send it to alienware, and I'm sure it's the cause of my harddrive frying earlier. And even after a new harddrive and
all it is still doing this. Thanks

Solve : Flash Player issues?

Answer»

I went to IGN.com to watch a video for the upcoming Starcraft 2 game and when I clicked the link to watch the video, the WINDOW that pops up with the video in it claims that I did not have macromedia flash PLAYER 9. So I download the flash player from the adobe website and adobe says the installation was completed succesfully but I still cant watch the video at IGN, the same window claims that I don't have flash player 9, which is the one I downloaded, version 9,0,47,0. YOUTUBE VIDEOS work but next to nothing else does, any idea what could be the problem?

I'm running Windows Vista PREMIUM, Internet Explorer 7.0, and Windows LiveOneCare antivirus.Did you go here:
http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=tn_15507
to check your version?

On a same page, it also says:

In some cases, the version number reported in the movie above may not match the version of the installed Flash Player. If you think that a later version of Flash Player is installed on your system than indicated in the movie above, then follow these steps:

1. Close and reopen the browser.

An error may have occurred during a previous installation of Flash Player. To resolve this error, completely remove the player, restart your machine, and then reinstall Flash Player.

There is also possible, some of your IE settings are not correct.I figured it out... sorta. I had to try uninstalling the flash player twice and reinstalling it before it finally worked out but it works fine now but thanks anyway.Cool...

Solve : help needed, icons are huge on vista?

Answer»

changed the dpi settings, went into control panel and manually tried to make the desktop icons smaller (went down to 16)...nothing. any help?Could be the screen resolution and if not that then you could try changing the icon size of the desktop folder (its in the favorite links list on the left of any folder).A.
1. Right click on the Desktop
2. Select View
3. SET it to CLASSIC Icons

B.
1. You can also HOLD down the Control key while the desktop is displayed
2. Use the wheel mouse to make the icons larger or smaller
3. This gives more control

Option "B" works only when under option "A" you have "Medium Icons", or "Large Icons" selected.
I missed this. Next time I'm working on vista I'll try that. Thanks Broni.

Evil_Cronos: I'm pretty sure it's not the resolution as that refers to the sharpness of the picture.Quote

This is not correct. With LOWER resolution, you'll see larger icons, unless you lower icons sizes manually.correction noted.

Solve : Preview Icons Help!?

Answer»

Alright I've been running Windows Vista Premium for about 2 and a half weeks and found little to complain about, but I knew that it wouldn't last. when viewing the icons of video files, the icons have (until now) shown a FRAME from the video similar to the PREVIEW on picture files. Now all of a sudden the icon is the basic icon for the type of file extension with no preview. I don't recall doing anything unusual, but I want to GET these previews back anyone know what to do?File's icon shows an icon of the application it's associated with.
I suspect, you lost correct file association.
It's easy to fix, but I need to know what application you usually open your video files with, and also when you go to Windows explorer, and look at any video file, what does it say in "Type" column? The type of file determins what program I open a file with and these files are AVI, MPG, and MPEG with DivX Player and WMV files with Windows Media Player 11. Under the type column is, depending on the folder, anyone of the metioned file types that are in that folder.Open Windows Explorer.
Navigate to any avi file, right click on it, click on "Open with", click on "Choose Default Program" (it may be named slightly different, like "Others", depending on Windows version).
A list of programs will open.
Navigate to DivX Player, select it (click), put a checkmark in a box next to "Always use the selected fiel...".
Click OK.
You are done.

Repeat same procedure for other type of files (for WMV, you'll pick Windows Media Player)I tried that and it didn't change anything. I've been playing around on this computer looking for anything that might effect the preview on the icons but nothing seems to fix the problem. It was working from the day I put the files on the computer til one day after I shut down the computer when I left the house and when I turned it back on later that day it didn't work.I think, I misread your question.
Go Start, and type in:
regsvr32 shimgvw.dll (<===there is a SPACE there)
Hit Enter. If you meant to type that in Run or the Dos Comand prompt then when I do an error message comes up saying
"The module "shimgvw.dll" was loaded but the entry-point DllRegisterServer was not found.

Make sure that "shimgvw.dll" is a valid DLL or OCX file and then try again."

I've read about other people using that method on Windows XP but from what I've seen it doesn't SEEM to work on Windows Vista, which I'm running. Any other ideas?Do you have thumbnails enabled?
Windows Explorer>Tools>Folder Options.
Click on View tab.
Under the Files and Folders tree heading, un-check (tick) the checkbox next to Always show icons, never thumbnails option.Yes, Only the video file seem affected though, my image file still have a preview for an icon. That's strange...
I checked MS site (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/249873) about that "entry-point DllRegisterServer was not found" error, and it may indicate, that your "shimgvw.dll" is corrupted.
But...I tried the above command on my Vista, and I got very same error.

BTW,
Quote

I've read about other people using that method on Windows XP
I have this particular dll on my Vista, so it should work.

While searching for "entry-point DllRegisterServer was not found", I got a lot of hits, but most of them involve coding, which gives me a headache (LOL).
I'll look for more, though.I may be up to something.
Apparently, Vista is having problems with displaying some thumbnails (created by Nero, for instance).
You may want to read:
http://forum.osnn.net/archive/index.php?t-88746.html
http://www.neowin.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=542536
Some solutions worked for some people there, so you may want to poke around there.
Also, Google search for "vista video files thumbnails won't show" will give you more...After playing around from help site to help site I finaly found a solution that has worked for me. In case anyone else has the same problem this is what I did.

1. Uninstall Nero.
2. Got to http://www.winhelponline.com/articles/105/1/ and download the apropiate .REG fix and follow the directions on the web page.
3. Right click (for example) an AVI file, select properties, select change the program the file opens with to what ever program you want, even if it is already set to that program and click ok, apply and ok.

For folders to show previews for the files that it contains

1. Right click a folder and select properties, under the customize tag select change icon and restore default, apply and ok.

Thanks to Nicholas from Winhelponline for this info.Good job!!!

Solve : Windows svg icon, XP doesn't know svg??

Answer»

I have a svg folder with one 'String Value' in it. I EDITED it to SAY "SVG File". Under that there are two folders that are empty. An 'OpenWithList' and a 'Illustrator.exe' both with an empty string value.

You see in the picture I have an AI file and a SVG file. I have a lot of files that I like to organize by type. They're both the filetype "Adobe Illustrator Artwork 13.0". Well I don't want the SVG to be the same as the others. I want it to say something else. And you do this by modifying the String Value in the svg folder.

Windows isn't very responsive. If I put in SVG file or SVG image it'll take 5-10mins to take effect. Then the Filetype changes in windows and I can categorize them by type. But then I lose my icon. And it's not recognized anymore by windows, so I choose to open it with illustrator cs3 (13.0) and BINGO it changes the Filetype back to "Adobe Illustrator Artwork 13.0" again. AHHH! I need some fresh air....LOOOOOOOOOOOOOLQuote from: Broni on October 10, 2007, 09:01:08 PM
I need some fresh air....LOOOOOOOOOOOOOL
Dude, don't you realize I'm puttin you to work?

GET ON IT, pronto!

HAHa! My head is spinning WOOT! I got it to work finally!

Icon working and everything. Here's what I did incase anyone cares:

First I deleted those two folders in the above picture (the Openwithlist and Illustrator.exe). I dont think I had to do that, but whatever. Then I went to infamous Tools > Folder Options > and then File Types. Find SVG. For me I named it "SVG Image" via registry.

Ok, then at the bottom of that dialogue box you click "Advanced". Notice on some filetypes a "Restore" button may be there and this is what was keeping me back, because everytime I could never click Advanced. Nothing WOULD happen. So finally I could go into advanced. From there you get an "Edit File Type" box. I filled in the odd blank space so it said "SVG Image", which it should've already said. Then clicked the "Add" button to add a new action. Choose an Open action. And enter in your executeable path which in my case was "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Illustrator CS3\Adobe Illustrator CS3\Support Files\Contents\Windows\Illustrator.exe" %1

I had to do all that because clicking the Change button "Open with..." and choosing Illustrator changed the registry Filetype back to "Adobe Illustrator Artwork 13.0" everytime.

I'm really happy for you

You SAVED me a lot of headache

A guy that made a really good iconset that everyone uses recommended Iconworkshop to me when I asked him. I've made 3-4 icons before. All done in photoshop first. Then you go File, Export... And well i can't click on confirmation links and stuff like that..And it's a big nusance because i can't click on anything anymore and access that page...Anyone KNOW what i'm talking about or is this UTTERLY abnormal to any of you?
If anyone can help i really appreciate it. THANKS in Advance Please i'd really like a fast reply..I need to access a link and i can't !>,I really need a fast reply on this one if anyone has ANY ideas on what im talking about please speak up. I need all the help i can get on this. (Make it fast before i resort to THROWING my laptop down the stairs. Hehhe)
More information on your system would help a lot.
Version of windows you're using.
What browser you're using.
The precise error message you're GETTING and on what pages you get it.
What protection programs you have installed. (anti-virus, anti-spyware, etc.)
Hmmm....I'm using Vista, broswer well don't know =P
Hmm...I have norton.
The precise error message is, "Internet has stop working" (After a few secs.) "Internet is now restarting" basiclly, it restarts everytime i click on some sort of link. But not all, mainly like advertise websites, some forums, Stuff like that. I was reccomended to delete temporary internet files, and have but no use.
Now, i don't know what to do. And i need to click on an importan link and can't cause EVERY time it stops working. Any ideas? Can you google the site and enter it there? There is still alot of info missing so you are reducing this to guesswork...not good if a quick solution is needed.
Does Norton include a firewall and have you checked it to see if it's blocking it ?
Vista is not a browser so you are probably using IE7...have you checked it's settings ? ?
How do you connect to the web ? ?
Is the laptop wired or wireless ? ?
I could go on but you get the idea...

after fresh reinstall of windows and you still want vista skin for xp provided by that bricopack, do a system restore, then install bricopack, then install AVG.

OR do system restore, AVG installation then bricopack.

I forgot what works, since I have vista now, but i used that bricopack before with AVG no problem.Just to be on the "Safe side", I won't attempt it.or other option is, find a different antivirus software. if you're look for free software, try avira or avast.

For that matter of fact, I did not have any problems with their bricopacks and I did install the bricopacks without any other shells like vista transformation pack.

I did install in safe mode and I did MAKE a system restore point before I installed in case anything wierd happened.

This is why i swear by Total Uninstall...

Solve : "Access Denied" folder on vista?

Answer»

ok heres the run down

i just switched my old HP computer to a new one so i had to put all my files onto a personal media drive

well in my old computer i had a folder with some "private" pictures that i didnt want anyone to find so i put LIKE access denied to everyone but me on that computer

then i switched everything into my personal drive including that folder

and now that im here on my new computer i kant open the folder or anything.. and ive tried changing ownership and playing around with the permissions in the security tab and it still wont work

can anyone please help??

Let's hope you still have a user account on the old computer. If not you are screwed. You need to copy the folder back and take off the access denial. Then copy it over and redo your security.

The reason is that when you create a user on a new computer, even though the user name is the same as before, the security encryption uses a COMPLETELY different random KEY and therefore the access denial from before is not possible to remove.

By the way, you do know you'll go blind eventually from looking at "private" pictures?

You can try this solution:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/810881
If it works.Broni, I think you are right! I was thinking he had ENCRYPTED the folder, I don't know why.

I hope, it works, but on the other hand I may be blamed for his blindness....LOL

Solve : certified for vista?

I was gonna buy a graphics card but it said certified for vista n I was wondering if the certified for vista video cards work on xp pro as well or would it only work for vista? I don't see why hardware would not work on a certain OS but what can you guys tell me?I got this off the MS site: Please read the sentence in italics.
Windows XP Professional: CHECK Compatibility

There are two options for checking compatibility of your software and hardware to make sure your system is ready for upgrade to Windows XP:

• Search Windows Marketplace
Windows Marketplace features products that are compatible with Windows XP. You'll find Windows Marketplace HELPFUL if, for example:

You have Windows XP and are considering buying NEW software or a new hardware device but want to check its compatibility first.

If you do not see a product in Windows Marketplace, it does not necessarily mean the product will not work with Windows XP—to be sure, you should check with the product's manufacturer.
• Use the Upgrade Advisor
The Upgrade Advisor is a tool you can download and install to check if your system hardware and software are ready for upgrade to Windows XP.

certified for vista means that it has been tested with vista without problems. the graphics card should be able to run under windows xp pro, you might need to just get xp drivers if none are provided.

check with graphics manufacturer's website if you need more info.

as long as WIN xp can detect and run the video card you want to use, you are fine.

Solve : I screwed something Up!?

Yesterday I was going to shut down the computer and hit either log off or switch user and bow i cannot get back on as the administrator . I have HP windows vista. Its only a couple of months old. My wallpaper is gone, ALONG with all of my bookmarks etc. I tried doing a system RECOVERY, that didnt help. If I shut down and restart everything I did add, book marks, set up email accounts is gone again. I get an error message the says user profile not loaded correctly. you have been logged on witha temporary file. see you event log or administrator. Event log doesnt tell me anything. How do I log on as administrator? When I start the computer it has my little Icon and name but then I get the error message. TIA,

SherryThe builtin administrator is disabled by default in Windows Vista.

If you want to use this account, the first THING you'll have to do is enable the administrator using Computer Management.

But then it still does not SHOW up on the Welcome Screen.
Like in XP, you have to add a registry key to accomplish this.

1. Start the registry editor.
2. Browse to HKEY_LocalMachine\Software\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\
3. Create a new key: SpecialAccounts
4. In the SpecialAccounts key, create another new key: UserList
5. In this key, create a new DWORD value: Administrator
6. Set this value to 1

Then you should be able to logon with the builtin administrator.

It just repeats with the BSOD, i have rebuilt the system 3 times, and nothing.... i have no clue what is causing this.. the Hard Drive is good, Memory test checks out good, i tried to start in Safe mode, but i get an error that says "Windows can not finish installing in safe mode, please restart windows normally".

The system is a P4S800D-X Asus w/ AGP 8x ATI x1300, 3.0 Ghz Intel Celeron, 1.5 Megs of Ram, 80gig Maxtor HD w/ My Book 320gig External.

http://youtube.com/watch?v=FVbf9tOGwnoI agree vista is trash...

Proplem is i had XP on this Hard Drive, and i can put it back on it HOWEVER, XP will not work either, you see i install it, and everything appears to work fine however, the first time XP tries to load i got another BSOD, and this time it's saying to check for viruses, and make sure the Hard Drive doesn't have bad sectors, but like i said i have done checks on the HD it's fine.

So... i've had Vista working on this computer before, but it just stop working for no reason, i went back to XP, Xp stopped working, so i reinstalled XP - And it started doing what i described above...

Solve : Vista audio query?

Answer»

Ok, I recently started using vista and noticed that many of my games were not recegnising my sound card, a creative xfi, so I sent an e-mail to creative and they told me that it was an operating system limitation not a sound card ISSUE, though there was the alchemist program which supports some games.
So my general query is, does anyone know if microsoft intends to restor the sound compatability at a future date or not?Creative is the one dropping the ball on this one...it's their product they should have Vista drivers written for it.
I'm afraid they are passing the buck.overmind
You should go to Creative web site, and look for a new DRIVER for your sound card. What is your card model? My sound card is an XFI gamers edition (running in gaming mode) - but I already have the latest drivers for both it and the alchemist program - I was just wondering if they were extending their support for older titles, but if what patio says is right then chances are that they won't/Here is a Beta driver i found for your card...as always with BETA drivers use caution and make sure your IMPORTANT stuff is backed up...
I suggest reading the entire thread to see if it worked for others.
Another GOOD spot to check is the Forums for the specific game you are running...lot's of times they find out first about any drivers including video and audio. You may try another thing. Find your game ".exe" file (file, which starts a game). Right click on it, click on Properties, click on Compatibility tab, and, if allowed (not grayed out), put a checkmark in "Run this program in compatibility mode for": Windows XP should be listed there.patio - thank for the link, but I think I will just wait for them to finish the driver

Broni - I did not think of this line - I will try but as creative had to release a different program to allow compatability this might not work, but I will try.

Lol...there's the probable cause right there. But like deerpark said, more info is needed to properly diagnose this problem.Well All I know is that I turned off the computer the night before. Then the next morning I turned it on and it was making a noise that I never heard before. So I restarted it half way into loading and then it acted like it was the first time it was turned on. The computer is a everex impact. Is this computer under warranty?its probably not. We bought it at walmart. The computer is working fine since I bought it. I would just like to try to bring up some documents that isn't on here anymore. I'm hoping I can do it in Dos or search with a specific title. I've tried the names of the files and temp but no luck. If the files were DELETED and sent to the Recycle Bin and deleted from there as well...there still may be the opportumity of recovery...

Sometimes you'll be ABLE to recover these files if the space they occupied on the HARD drive hasn't been overwritten.

I use a program called File Recover. That LINK is to my site, but you can also visit PC Tools, vendor of the software I just mentioned.Ok. I downloaded the file recovery program and it found quite a bit but didn't recover anything so what does that mean? The links I provided you for File Recover by PC Tools is trialware...you'll need to pay for the software in order to utilize the recovery option for this software.

But back to the original problem...when you used the File Recover software...did it find the files you were looking for? If it did...and they are still there...then paying for the software may be the way to go in order to recover your lost files.

Someone else, however, may be able to find a free software program that will accomplish the same type of data recovery you're looking for.

Good luck!Just a update. When I ran that program and restarted my computer. I started to do searches on some of the documents that was missing and they showed up so I have the basic documents that I need. thankyou.

Problem Solved.

Glad to hear it all worked out...

Solve : replacing vista with XP?

Answer»

I have Vista, I don't like it. I want to install XP. Before I start, I want to get drivers for all my hardware. I have sound and video drivers, I just need NETWORK card drivers. I have an "nVidia nForce Networking Controller". Where do I get drivers for it? I looked on the nVidia website and where it tells me to choose my device there are many options under "nForce". I don't KNOW which one to pick. Can somebody help me?What is the make and model of your computer...or is it a custom build? It's an HP Pavilion a6000n desktop PC.I'm having a little trouble finding an XP driver for that particular model network controller.

Tell me...is that an on-board controller? I'm assuming it is. If so...you may need to cross your fingers and hope XP recognizes it...or, if you have a separate PCI Network adapter lying around...you can use it. They're relatively inexpensive...about $15 at Wal-Mart...just depends on where in the world you are. If your username is any clue...I'm not sure if they have a "WALLY World" in Russia.

I went to HP Support for drivers as they pertain to your model...and the only drivers they have are for Vista and Vista 64-bit. That's not good. Oh and I live in Canada, I moved here. The network adapter is onboard. I have a solution for this if XP won't recognize it..... When I just got this computer, I got a USB wireless adapter. It didn't have drivers for Vista, so I just moved the router to the Vista Computer and used the wireless thing for my old computer which has XP. If XP won't recognize, I'll just move the router BACK to the old computer and use the wireless adapter.Have you CONTACTED HP ? ?
They'll probably ship you a MBoard driver CD for nothing...specify XP if that's what you need.

Solve : Device Mgr - Network Adaptors showing small yellow triangles with q/mark?

Answer»

I'm operating VISTA home premium - within Device Mgr and under Network adaptors - I have 5 ITEMS showing a small yellow triangle with a question mark, these are -

6TO4 Adaptor
6TO4 Adaptor
Microsoft 6to4 Adaptor#14
isatap.(995E7B2F-OB1E430D-95D5-4983F88E730D)
isatap.(A3FB1218-OEED-4675-9C25-C346A2C9CE4E)

What does this mean? Is something malfunctioning? Can I sort them? Should I delete them?
There are ANOTHER 2 -

Speedtouch USB ADSL PPP
Via Rhine 2 Fast Ethernet Adaptor

But both of these do not show any yellow triangles like the others above.

What's going on here?Lots of Vista users get these showing for 6 to 4 adapters and isatap. especially Dell and HP OWNERS. If your PC is working OK don't worry.

Thanks, I was begining to worry about these.

Solve : Multiple Processors?

Answer» REGARDLESS of what PEOPLE think of Windows Vista, everyone agrees that it has hefty hardware requirements. How does Windows Vista do with multiple processors? Do multiple processors MAKE it noticeably faster?I would say if you had a dual core/quad core processor with a lot of RAM, you would be able to run it fine. Few of my friends say its really GOOD but then again they have about 4-6gb of ram and dual/quad core processors.

Solve : Huge Computer Problem, Virus? Bug? I don't know but please someone help!?

Answer»

Hi, I recently downloaded a program called "BitTorrent" that some mates had told me about (so I wasn't 100% sure how it was used but it seemed PRETTY straight forward). The program seemed fine, I even got it off the official site. I then downloaded a "Torrent" off the net to open through the program. After downloading it I then double clicked it resulting in a familiar window popping up to ask me which program I would like to run it through. As I was going to open the file through BitTorrent I thought it would e best to select that program to run it through. However it didn't go well. My computer is now trying to open every single program that I select through BitTorrent. I set a restore POINT before downloading the program as I usually do do before downloading anything but now it is even trying to open System restore through BitTorrent! I'm no genius when it comes to computers so I am unsure as to whether it was a virus or a fault. I'm just praying that someone here can help me.

Thanks,

Alien_1

EDIT: oh, almost forgot it may help if you knew that I am using Vista home premium. Thanks again, Alien_1Hi.....Have you uninstalled this program? If not do it......If you did...Have you shut down and restarted your system?....If so...shut down and stall your system disk.......We do'nt know what system you have...so pls inform us.....Thanx....[/i]yeah I have uninstalled it and rebooted my computer however I don't REALLY understand what you mean by "Stall your system disk" if you could explain in a littl more detail that woud be great thanksSorry about that! Pls INSTALL your system disk....You will lose some programs and apps, but the system will be as you purchased it..... also did you shut-down the system-not reboot it...... If you want to try and find this program without The system disk install.......go annd click start - then press RUN - a little panel should appear - type msconfig- click ok, now your in your system config utility..... go to the services tab and click it....at the BOTTOM check the box hide all MS services... the only apps running should be anti-virus....look for things that do'nt look right....and disable them...if you are not possitive of what a program is.....write down and google it to find its meaning....if this fails..... system disk time!!!! goood luckHOLD ON A SECOND HERE...
robit i know you are trying to assist but you need to let people know they will lose all their data and programs on a re-install. So let's move a little slower unless all data has been backed up
There is a problem with your file associations...
Start by uninstalling the bittorrent app.
Re-boot and go to Start/ All Programs...find Command Prompt, right click it and select run as administrator...at the command prompt type in sfc /scannow and hit Enter. Have your Vista CD handy as it may ask for it.
Post back with the results...1. well since you did have restore point before installing bittorrent, then restore back to that point in time, unless computer tells you it can't do that.

2. check your computer with anti spyware and anti virus program(s)

3. if you have done above and you are you have clean system, then try resetting the default programs used to run files on default (like music player, default browser, etc) and checking other settings that you think might have affected what programs open what things.

4. if nothing work, then back up all important files / files you want to save, make list of all software you will need to reinstall, then reinstall windows or boot recovery cd, or use recovery program.

If you have HP or compaq computer, then you most likely have recovery program on computer already installed by manufacturer, so just run upon rebooting by pressing correct keys and following directions.
thanks for suggestions but I managed to find a solution here:

Solve : cant delete program (uninstall files lost)?

I am having trouble removing my shareaza program. when i try to uninstall message says uninstall files not found. I think shareaza is slowing down my computer. Any help appreciated.Yh that's why i use basic torrent file sharing and not all this fancy mumbo jumbo ...... go to c:\ in my computer program files LEFT click any folder so its highlighted type S it should come up under the S section delete anything remotely to do with that program and then try a unistall...remove all traces.... that program also endures a painful BLOW of addware into your computer so i suggest running superantispyware...

Goodluck Mbays, I've been running shareaza for over a year without a problem. There are many things that will slow down your computer. What makes you think it's that program?Shareza is like kazza...... i dont like it memory hog as well...well i use ares a lot, but you can download faster and get infected faster then other p2p.. Yh but ares can also be used as bitorrent i have it as well.... i think its the best p2p going .....

I don't think that will do much unloved he needs to remove any traces from system files ..... there will only be a few MILE errors with cc leaner ... including a few old installers and he needs to installers to uninstall shareaza otherwise it will be difficult .... then REINSTALL it and uninstall itQuote from: mbays on September 26, 2007, 03:09:05 PM

thats why you run the installer again to recreate those missing files so you can uninstallStart, run, type in regedit. make sure that my computer at the top has been selected. click on edit, select find from drop down list type in shareazza click find

delete any folder called shareazza, press F3 to find next instance. Delete all refrences to shareazza

Be careful this is your registery settings if unsure ask some one more competent to do thisQuote from: unlovedwarrior on September 27, 2007, 09:29:58 AM
then reinstall it and uninstall it

I would certainly try this before you go mucking around in the registry as suggested above.
This should only be done if you are familiar with it and proper backups are made.
assuming you use windows xp or windows vista ... ryou need to make restore point which helps.

only p2p that i trust is frostwire, but then again i don't use it too much. stay away from there.

you want music? use ruckus.com if you have an edu email, ruckus is free. or use napster which you have to pay for after free 7 day trial. But in that 7 day trial, I got tons of music!!!

But yeah back to your question, you should run registry program to fix errors on your computer caused by those things as well as other errors to keep computer clean.

I'd be WORRYING about whether or not my ISP would allow me to spam this MANY people at one time.Strongly AGREED. If the OP was asking in connection with work, say he has to EMAIL 200 colleagues, then either he would already know how to do it, or his IT dept would be the obvious first port of CALL. Solve : Changing automatic settings for default email web reply?

Answer»

Using windows vista and Incredimail as default email client.
Every time I try to reply to an email address direct from any web site Windows Mail opens and I then can't send the mail - how do I change any settings to make this automatic to incredimail to respond instead of Windows Mail, I can't seem to find anywhere to do this. control panel/internet options/programs tabThanks for your very prompt reply - unfortunately I've tried these settings and get a message after applying 'use my current e-mail programme' stating - 'could not perform this operation because the default email client is not properly installed'
Tried re-installing Incredimail a number of times but without resolving the problem - message still comes up as above!Contacted Incredimail support - they seem to think it's due to Incredimail not being fully Vista compatable.
When asked when the programme will be updated to become compatable they avoided the question and changed the subject!Quote from: RsC on September 20, 2007, 08:24:30 AM

Is using Incredimail of paramount importance?

If not, WOULD you like to consider a DIFFERENT email client?

The email program that comes with Vista is Windows Mail. Using Incredimail isn't vital - necessary, but not vital, particularly as I have a variety of templates set up for a number of associations I'd use to reply to users within those areas.
Another consideration is I've paid to use the additional functionality of Incredimail through their options on letterheadings/notifiers etc., so I don't really want to give up on it that easily. And I find the windows mail boring and uninviting to use.
I guess i've just got to wait until they get their sh.t together on VistaQuote from: RsC on September 24, 2007, 01:54:21 PM

I can't comment on the additional functionality of Incredimail as I've never used it.

Here, I like to use Thunderbird for my email, and Firefox for web browsing.
I've found both to quite NICE to use, well supported, and continually updated. Both are highly configurable. Both are free.

Further, I am not the only person that uses this machine. Others use Internet Explorer and something else for email. It would not be good for me to change this computer so that the default CLIENTS suited me.

Sometimes I too want to be able to simply click on a link and open the corresponding program. Remember the highly configurable comment I made? There is an extension - free- that does just this. Same extension can be added to both Thunderbird and Firefox. Very slick.
Now I can leave the Windows defaults alone, for other users, and still do what I want.

Sometime you might want to look into both these programs. Especially since they are free. If you like them - don't be surprised if you do, many do - you might then ease into it.

He has enough memory ..... to run x-p without issues.... im totally stumped to be honest wait for a more experienced member and im sure they will have a idea on how to fix your issue.Tried booting into Safe Mode / Last Good Configuration? If it does boot with either of these choices run a full virus/spyware scan.

Alan <>< I have tried starting it in safe mode and such. Also tried to rearrange the boot order.

A weird thing about it is I've had it before when it wouldn't completely load up but it NEVER made it past the black screen and then when I turned it off and tried it again it said that Windows didn't load proper last time and to try in safe mode or last known.

However, this time it doesn't seem to recognize that there is a problem with start up ...Boot to your XP cd and do a repair.

Alan <>< I'd honestly just format and re-install if it were me, but it's a simple process for me cause I BACKUP everything on a regular basis, Which I would RECOMMEND anyone to do, esp with Windows. Or do a repair.

Dang okay

I was hoping that there would be something else I could do. Nothing on the computer has been backed up and I've been using it to store all my digital pictures. Which really means I should have been backing it up.

Also I'm not sure that I have a windows xp disc because it was a refurb computer so everything was set up on it when I got it...

Would it have been some sort of virus that would have caused it? If so, for furture reference what would be the best bet in virus and spyware and such protectors for my computer?contact Compaq, they may have a restore CD for you... all you have to do is give them the make and model of your PC and what OS you where using.

Also, it would be a good ideal if you can get an external hard drive... Maxtor one touch 3.. don't install the software.... xp has it..... this way you won't have any problems.

Backup all your data that you want to save!

Solve : Vista Mail?

Hi, Just purchased a Compaq notebook with Vista Basic and preinstalled with Norton, so I removed
it (Norton) because I hate it and the machine became a rocket - no problems. Then I
installed Trend Micro AV and now I can't open the Windows Mail program at all, the message says I don't have enough memory to do it. (Error message 0x80070005,5) Further it says that the app couldn't be opened because the MSOE.Dll could not ne initiated. I removed Trend but still have the same problem. Also I am getting error messages at startup and in EXPLORER concerning missing desktop locations (Windows\System32\config\systemprofile\Desktop), The IE shortcut was removed from the start menu and I cannot ACCESS the quick launch toolbar, any ideas?

Do you have any antispyware protection? Are you able to run System File Checker?Hi, umm... just installed Onecare which is presently looking for bugs, have run Crap Cleaner & Tune up Utilities which found errors and repaired them but I still have the problem. Also Vista's help menu finds no topics no matter what I type in there ie: Vista, Windows, I wish I never bought this thing etc.... you knowSome good antispyware programs are SUPERAntiSpyware and AVG Antispyware Free. Try installing and running these and SEE if they find anything. By the way, a good antivirus program is AVG Free.Ok thanks, I'll give that a try but I'm pessimistic about the RESULT Well we learn something everyday! Antivirus didn't help but I figured out the fix ... Created a new account in Users and set that as the administrator - worked a treat, everything is now fully functional - KEWL! Thanks for the help.
No problem . When it comes to computers, there is ALWAYS something new to learn.

Solve : Bloated Windows Vista?

Answer»

Hello, I am RUNNING Windows Vista Home Premium, It can pre-installed with allot of crap of course. Now these are the specs for my desktop.

AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 4000+ 2.10 GHz
1024 MB of RAM - 894 MB after my shared memory video card eats the rest.
320 GB HDD

I'm not running a hole lot on this Desktop, I've only had it for a month now and it's running 100% CPU usage and 70% RAM. Now I run ad-aware and Windows WASHER along with defraging almost daily. This still doesn't really fix the problem much.

I don't have a legit XP disc so I don't want to really take the chances of formating and starting fresh. Any suggestions ?First try uzing a program called "zappit" from cnet . com, its free and will clean up all the videos, giffs, IMAGES you collect from surfing the net, it will also rid your computer of all the porn. Clearing your temp files does not do this and this program will get rid of a ton of crap you didnt even know you had. And why would you go back to XP from vista? It doesnt matter that its no legit, they work find Run these 2 online scanners.
Ewido/AVG Anti-Spyware Online Scan
Panda ActivescanWell I'd go want to go back to XP for two REASON's. It seems I've ran into a lot of compatibility problems with a lot of software. Then of course because my resources are being ate up so much, and I've only owned the PC for a month. Also I frequintly run ad-aware , windows washer, defrag, and disk cleanup. Plus this PC came with Norton which seems to serve no purpose but good at eating more resources. But I will try the recommended software and see what happens. How will you revert to XP without a legit CD ? ?I agree that vista is bloated, I'm running vista ultimate on an alienware and I just don't see the advantages that it has vis-a-vis its size and system space. However, the fact is, it is the new standard and microsoft will keep producing items just for vista: such as Direct X 10, which is solely for vista and which all the new games will be running.

In your case, my suggestion would be to keep vista, but clean up a few things. First and foremost, get rid of Norton, I completely hate norton, another bloated program and not even close to being the best on the market. Get NOD32 or kaspersky. They are much lighter and do at the very least as good a job as norton. Also when removing Norton, do not USE add or remove programs, get the Norton removal tool from their site so it completely removes this beast.

I would also use msconfig to shut down all the unnecessary programs at startup and whatever unnecessary services are running. There is no way you should be having close to 100% cpu usage even with vista. Most likely there are just too many background programs running. You should have programs running when you need them. If your computer is clean of viruses and spyware, doing this should improve things a bit.

A hardware suggestion would be to upgrade your memory. memory is relatively cheap and it will help vista run better.
Well Id just have to use a none-legit disc ? Yea, I don't have a lot of running processes, most likely more than should be running, but most of they came stock on Vista. Removing Norton did help. I'm still very unhappy with Windows Vista's performance, But I was never really a Microsoft fan in the first place. I'll be sure to get more RAM, I managed to get it running to an avg of 12%, Better but still doesn't please me. I have a lot of similar programs running on my Linux box only taking 2%, and it's 5 years old..
