Solve : old laptop, no cd-rom, how can i get online??

Answer»

Hey all!

was wondering if anyone could help me?

About maybe 5-7 years ago we bought my GRANDMOTHER an IBM THINKPAD 755CV for Christmas. she never did anything with it and OFFERED it to me TODAY. so i have basically this brand new old laptop.

i would love to use it but there's no cd drive, just a floppy disk drive.

any ideas on how i can get AOL on to this computer? i dont even think it has enough room for a new version, but an old version? ((3.0 on disk doesn't work today, someone told me))

thanks!!Does it have USB PORTS? If so you could INVEST in an external CD/DVD player like the one posted below

http://www.misco.co.uk/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=281097&CatId=655

It also depends on the version of windows you use though. The one posted below only works on 2000/XP and Vista.

Solve : Copying Hard Drives!?

Answer»

Hi,

I'm no computer whizz so please bear with me!

I want to copy all the files from my old laptop (acer travelmate) to my NEW SONY vaio laptop without copying over the Operating System (old laptop runs on XP, the new on Vista)

Can anyone please TELL me the best way to do this and what cable is required to CONECT the laptop.

Many THANKS in advance, much appreciated.

Lee
Are your laptops networked to get on the internet or anything like that?

If so, you can just share the Hard drive on the old laptop and go into it through the new laptop to get the files you want. Many thanks GX, my old laptop is on a wireless network but not connected the new one yet.

I'm giving my old laptop to a friend so ideally want to format this once I've copied over the files.

thanks again, LeeYou can also use a crossover cable.

Alan <>< Burn your files on a DVD and copy them to your new laptop. It'd be a lot faster to just do it over a network, And it's pretty simple to setup. So I'd recommend it.just share the hard drive on the old laptop over the network with a cross over network cable (red), and copy the files that you want.Quote from: programming_pat on September 19, 2007, 08:56:38 PM

Doesn't have to be a red cable... I have a blue and a grey cable in my "spares" drawer at home. How much data do you need to copy?Could he not WiFi Ad-Hoc the two laptops and do it that way?Meanwhile he has gone missing...

Solve : Windows Help & Support?

Answer»

Whenver I click on the help and support tab on my laptop (Windows Vista Home edition) I get the reply:
Internet Explorer cannot download/ from help
The requested site is either UNAVAILABLE or cannot be found. Please try again later.

Any SOLUTIONS?

Peter Are you online when you try to access 'help'?

Alan <>< It's TRYING to access the Internet and can't. Do you have an Internet connection? If you are on dial up are you connected?I am online and have a very good connection to the internet. I have had this issue SINCE the day I got this computer back in April. I guess I'll have to get support from Dell, after an hours wait.

I was wondering what would be an easy way to backup all my Drivers for my PC. I'm running Windows Vista Home PREMIUM, And I'd like to do the same to my other box with Win XP SP2Are you TRYING to say that you are going to install Vista on the other computer Either way that has nothing to do with my question. But I'm going to do a reinstall on both MACHINES, But not with Vista, Cause I'm not LIKING the resources it's eating up.. But I would like to know if their is a simple way to backup the drivers for everything on each box, to MAYBE CD-R....You might try this.Or this..

Solve : How to use Virtual PC??

Answer»

Hi,

I have really thought about this and instead of dual booting because Vista won't let me but XP will. How do i install OS's like Vista and MS-DOS both under Virtual PC?Try this GUIDE on installing DOS on Virtual PC.
http://infomyth.com/DOS/index.htm

You want to install Vista as well on the virtual pc?
here's a bit of reading:
http://windowsvistablog.com/blogs/windowsvista/archive/2006/10/11/virtual-pc-2007-beta-free-and-available-now.aspx
If you can't get to read the Vista install disc, select CD in the virtual machine WINDOW and select the cd/dvd drive with the install disc in it.
You should ofcourse install DOS and Vista on separate Virtual Machines so you avoid the dual booting mess.Quote from: Deerpark on September 14, 2007, 05:38:19 PM

Solve : == dead computers ==?

Answer»

I'm not trying to flood this board with posts but a 'curious' QUESTION ??

I have a bad habit of buying computers on sale and never getting to use them.

I do not think these 'sales' are 'junk in the box' as to all of them.

BUT EVERY computer I start using is a defective nightmare. I'll open it 'never used'
and try to troubleshoot until I'm totally burned out.

So far the solution has been to do a total re-install of Windows. So far 2 W98 computers..2 WME....3 WXP....

Even the 'restore disk' will not even run. If it's in a partition that won't restore.

At least the ME/XP have been solved by a re-install of Windows by a computer shop around here. Bring the dud home and it works fine.

My strange question ??

Do these things loose their data with time ??

I thought hard-drives were good places to store data but sit for several years and it might be corrupted ??

Computer hardware doesn't last forever...and will eventually fail.

I'm sorry you have to deal with such nightmares, but it's LIKE buying a used car...

"Let the buyer beware"So far it has not been hardware but data on hard-drive.

Operating system corrupted.

If you're saying you've bought computers and never used them...brand new...and then when you do open them...you have problems right from the get go?

That's not good...

If this is what you mean...I don't mean to sound sarcastic...but that's really bad luck...and I thought my luck was bad...Of recent I've bought nothing. Vista came out and any bargain probably means Vista is too big for it.

I saw a Compaq 'new' at Staples a week or so ago. $250 with $50 rebate.

I'm not rich and credit cards HELP and that's sort of the way I've picked them up over time.

BUT==my little pile of XP's (or EARLIER) 'every one of them' when taken out of the box is 'dead on opening'.

So far every one works wonderful as long as Windows is 're-loaded'.

So that gave me the thoughts how long data can sit on a hard-drive. Maybe I just live in the wrong place. (radiation field..giant magnet ?)

Let's be honest here...

Data will remain intact as long as there are no hardware issues...or malware infestations.

If leaving a computer sit around without being used for a few years caused data degradation...that would be a major issue for a lot of computer manufacturers looking to unload obsolete computer systems mass produced for the general public.

My guess is some type of magnetic field had to come into contact with thes computers...hence the data loss...of course, that's just a guess.

If you got most of these computers from Staples and they were deals like the one you got for the Compaq...then they may not be telling you the entire story behind these computer purchases...again, this is just an opinion.

BTW...I'm not sure how many of these computers you have, but I'm always looking for a good deal...if I can get one, that is.

Best of luck to ya!

Solve : Can't check for updates?

I'm using windows vista and it says it can't check for updates. When I try to do it manually it says to check for updates you must first install an update for windows update. When I click on install now it gives me errors found code 80070002. How do I GET the updates to installOther than the error code...what is the exact messsage (VERBATIM, which means "word-for-word") you are receiving when you try to download and install this update? Is this Vista a RC or a retail version that came on the machine ? ?I Googled that error and found this:
http://forums.techarena.in/showthread.php?t=705745

Apparently a lot of people have this problem. On that site there are a few links that MIGHT help.
I googled as well and found several fixes...that's why I was hoping the poster could be a little more specific with the error code.Techarena is a bit sus carbon. Solve : limited number of windows?

Answer»

for some reason on both my laptop(brand new with windows vista) and my older desktop with XP i can only OPEN a limited number of windows before i have to restart my computer. for example i will be browsing through my folders or opening up my pictures or whatever and say i have 6 windows (just for example) open. after a while it WONT let me open a 7th one, then i can close one window so that i have 5 open and then i can open and close a 6th one for a while, but then it will do it again and i will only be able to have 4 always open, and open and close a 5th one, and so on and so on untill i cant open any, not even my start menu to shut down. does anyone have any IDEAS why this is happening is it a virus or is it just a setting that is on the computers, because once i restart my computer it doesnt happen for a couple hours of usewhat kind of anti virus you got?did you GO for windows update all of this just for in case.
think it should be your vista setting, try check you setting.inside folder option / IE.
A quick question. Have you ever had these computer connected together in a network? If so, and they are both doing this then I would say it sounds like a virus. If you can give us more information on this then we can help you out more.i use avast as a virus checker, and havent found any virus' on either computer, and i have run them both on the same internet connection but i dont know how to set them up as a network, so unless i have done it by accident they have never been set up together on a network

thanks for the replys so far thoughWhat do you mean you run them on the same Internet? At the same time? Do you have them both connected to a router? If so that's considered a network. That would explain how they shared the virus. Restart into safe mode by restarting your computer and pressing F8. Run your virus and anti spyware scans in safe mode.their connected to the internet through a wireless router
Take a look at your processes in the task manager, is there anything 'odd' happening in there? (Memory Usage)You could try adding more virtual memory to your compouter/s. how much memory do they have?

Solve : Blurry screen?

Answer»

I recently purchased a 26 inch lcd television with a resolution of 1366 by 764, my windows vista laptop doesnt let me put this resolution out, ( either too high or two low) i right now have it on 1280 by 768 and there are blurred areas that are indescribably irritating. Does anybody know what i can do to eliminate these blurred areas, whats causing them and or any way to set my display at 1366 by 764. I have also heard about some programs that change settings just for use on a larger monitor but am unable to find any of these. THANKS for the help, any reply is better than none. What graphics card do you have?
And what make/model of TV do you have?graphics card is the integrated windows one, but it is capable of producing much higher than desired resolution on the tv. the tv is a sharp 26 inch high deff tv. My main problem is that i cannot figure out if there even is a way to manually set my resolution to the required setting for the TVDo you mean 1366 x 768? What make and model is the TV?

You can try USING a freeware tool from EnTech Taiwan
MultiRes which enables you to easily access and alter the display settings
available through the current display drivers. If 1366x768 is
available natively with the installed drivers it will show and be
easily switchable.

http://www.entechtaiwan.com/util/multires.shtm

Otherwise for making advanced custom resolutions you can use their
PowerStrip software which is try-before-you-buy and reasonably priced.

http://www.entechtaiwan.com/util/ps.shtm

That looks like a pretty neat tool contrex.
Do you know if there is a registry setting to change the resolution? or ini file or something?
yes it is supposed to be 1366 by 768 as the native setting of the tv. i will try what you said, thanksQuote from: michaewlewis on SEPTEMBER 12, 2007, 12:32:56 PM

I used Powerstrip to get 1600x1200 @ 74 Hz out of my Radeon 7000 to feed my Iiyama CRT monitor back in the day. I COULD not get that resolution and refresh rate any other way.

I don't know about registry settings, but there is such a thing as a monitor .inf file, which can sometimes make previously UNOBTAINABLE resolutions possible.

i just downloaded the multi res app and it doesnt give me any more resolution options than the display settings that came wiht windows. it jumps from 1280 to 1400. Quote from: dhsmith on September 12, 2007, 12:42:11 PM

You might find that their Powerstrip app will work, it enables you to build custom resolutions not catered for by your existing video drivers, and it is try before you buy.
i think what i am looking for is a seperate program that will let me manually set or chose a resolution that isnt availiable in the software that came with the computer. Correct me if i am wrong. Also is the computer possibly not capable of putting out this specific resolution?ok thank you, sorry about asking what you already said after you posted, i had already started writing that. I am now able to access the area where i can change the resolution to the right setting, (it even says LCD/TV) by the resolution but when i go to change it it says that powerstrip does not have the administrative settings to make the change. Is there any way i can give it administrative settings. I got it! all is good, thank you very much.another satisfied customer

Solve : Duplicated SVCHOST.EXE?

Answer»

I am using Windows Vista HOME Premium
1GB of RAM
2x 1.73 GHz CoreDuo PROCESSOR (Intel)
Dell << Explains any issue

I have about 13-15 (average) svchost.exe processes running (out of 66-76 processes on average)
They are all running at the same time, but on separate user levels (see screenshot below)

What causes this to happen, and how can I fix it?

avast! Antivirus, Windows Defender (spyware/adware)

Screenshot:
This is not a problem, SVCHOST is an integral part of Windows Operating Systems. It handles processes executed from dlls.

I've never seen so many though, maybe your antivirus or Windows Defender is causing them as they perform their active scanning?

I don't have any svchost.exe processes running at the moment and I'm on Vista Ultimate. Note: I do have UAC disabled.I doubt that my Antivirus scanner, or Adware scanner would cause a problem like this, since they should not execute any DLL's into the memory. DLoad and install Process Explorer...it will give you more details on what is using each instance...

Thats what I got.

You see the HIGHLIGHTED red IEUSER?
It keeps flashing. It appears at first for about 1.5 seconds green, then 1.5 seconds red, disappears for about 3 seconds, and COMES back, and it happens over and over and over again.

Edit:
Actually, thats happening on a few of the tasks....

Solve : Help with o.s?

Answer» HI All

Im not sure if this will make sense lol.
I want to reformat my hard drive at the moment i have vista premium upgrade i got the pc from Dell a few years back and they did not supply o.s disk. If i reformat will i be able to just use vista disk that i have or would i have to BUY xp and then put vista on top? I remember restoring COMP before and lost everything on hard drive but o.s was not affected that was before i had vista. Basicly my problem is that sinse putting vista on it will freeze at random not being able to click on anything so i have to reset it. And it is a genuine copy of vista. Hope it made sense can anyone help?since it is an upgrade cd, you will need a cd from a previous version of windows. You might be able to borrow one from a friend.
Also look over the CD's you got with the computer, there should be a windows disk. it might be labeled as windows restore cd or something similar. I'm pretty sure that they are required to SEND the os disk with the computer. If the OS is freezing on a brand NEW install chances are the MBoard drivers weren't installed properly.
Re-install them...they'll be on the Dell Driver CD or if not visit their site and DLoad them.

what does it mean what do i do please helpWhen did this problem start?
The error message means that either there is no operating system INSTALLED or the computer can't FIND the hard drive where the operating system is installed.I tried installing a camera the computer asked me to install the windows 98 cd becasue some drivers were NEEDED and i did More details please.
You were asked to insert the windows 98 CD correct? then what?During the driver installion, did it pause (hang) and then you forced the computer off?
Maybe the drivers didn't regester with the os and then the os doesn't reconize them and then refuses to boot be cuase of a security issue. I've dont a lot of work on 98, XP, And Vista.
Anouther THING, 98 should auto-install them with the drivers becuase all the drivers on the cd are in the windows folder and its sub directorys becuase i done that for 2 years if though i got the disc.Amrykid the problem isn't that windows 98 refuses to boot but that the BIOS can't find a bootable partition at all.Quote

Solve : Windows not recognizing Video Card?

Answer»

I've tried with 2 mid-range cards, first with an 8500GT and now a X1650 pro.

Windows apparently cannot recognize the card....(I hear windows booting in the background, but get stuck with the "HP" blue loading screen.

Machine is an HPa6110n....added 1 gig Ram, but works fine with our without.

Yes, I have a 600w power supply. Installed it and it works fine on "out of the box" system.

Yes, I've set BIOS to PCI-E x16 as primary video driver....PnP enabled (dont know if I should need to/ought to update BIOS)

Yes, I've disabled the on-board POS GeForce6150SE display adapter, and deleted all drivers.

Went through both phone support at ATI and NVIDIA, to no avail.

Running Vista *glare* and that seems to be the problem.

I do have an older monitor (3 years and change), not a flat-screen.....I prefer the old radiation king...but that MAY? be an issue?

Cannot download drivers before (physically installing) vid card on mobo.....tried with CD and downloading drivers off website. ("Cannot recognize harware")

You help me solve this problem, you get a big happy cookie.....I'm out of options.

Any help wold be much appreciated!

It looks as if you've tried many of the suggestions I'd make. If it's getting stuck at the "HP" loading screen, It's an issue with the system and not Windows. First, are you sure it's a 600W Power supply (is this something you added), I show it comes with a 350W, which may be inadequate for your video cards and would require an upgrade.

If you do have a new power supply in the computer try resetting CMOS to the default values, disable the on board video in CMOS and then add the card and see if that helps.

If not a BIOS update may be your next best bet. HOWEVER, after visiting the below link I didn't see any BIOS updates publicly available. May have to contact HP to see if any are available at this time.

http://welcome.hp.com/country/us/en/support.html
You may want to also use a can of compressed air to blow out that PCI-E slot and also clean the contacts of the vid cards with QTips and rubbing alcohol...Thanks for your suggestions.

I've tried setting the default video to PCI-E x 16 (which is the only available spot for a video card.) Yes, I replaced the power supply from the existing 250-w, and the manufacturer recommends a 300-w min power supply, so good to go there. I cant find any thing in the BIOS that might be causing a conflict though other than the aforementioned primary video display.

(and I did clean the PCI-E slot, even though it is a new machine.) Is PCI-E 8X an available choice ? ?
If so give it a try.hm, the admins have pretty much hit all the ideas I have. These are unlikely, but worth a try...

turn the power supply off-pull out the motherboard backup battery-put it back in, start compy (you might have already done this to reset the CMOS, I don't know)

check for the video card power requirements, I know that sometimes for processors wattage isn't the only thing that has a minimum.

have you tried Microsoft tech support? you mentioned Vista, and I myself am having severe Vista problems on an HP computer.

are all of your OTHER drivers updated completely/Vista updated completely? I had problems with my hardware before complete driver updates (MoBo included, especially MoBo, or even a BIOS reflash necessary)

also, try HP tech support, since you've contacted ATi and NVIDIA and it seems to be a problem outside of Windows, HP might help...Thanks Jek....I gave the ATI guy my SPECS on my new power supply, he said that should be adequate.

Tried HP...they dont want to help because it's an add-on card, so they refused to provide outside help. (Last HP I will EVER buy.)

Tried MS....they wanted like 50 bucks to help me....*click*

As a previous poster added, there do not appear to be any available (more recent) updates for my BIOS, I checked on my own as WELL, and came to the same conclusion.

I guess it is possible that there may not be enough wattage on the 12v rail of my new power supply....but that seems unlikely as ATI said it should work, although there were no specs on the box for what was required. First thing I did was to make sure the fan was runnning, which it was, for whatever that is worth. I returned said card, and will keep looking for more possible solutions. Just hate running WoW at 20-20 FPS or worse with my horrid 6150 integrated card.

Good suggestion on resetting CMOS, I'll give that a whirl with a borrowed card. ThanksWOOHOO! WoW! PM me, what server are you on?

On another note, if HP refuses to help, if you have your own copy of an OS and you don't have anything valuable to lose, might as well wipe and start over. Power Word: REINSTALL!

Of course, that's only if you're OK with starting over...

Wait, speaking of OS! What Vista are you running?! If you are running Vista Ultimate x64, maybe the drivers and stuff for x64 aren't compatible! Is THAT a possibility?Lol, Jek....running 32-bit Vista...but like I said, and per previous posters, Vista may not be the problem..I hear windows booting, just cant see it.

All my toons are on Cenarion Circle....Agnost (70 mage) is my main.

Edit: I didnt get a re-install disk with my CPU :-(
If you are the original owner and have the model and SERIAL number HP will send you an O/S disk for a reasonable charge. What brand of 600W PSU is this? It's a cooler master

Solve : Failed Vista Installation and Random Freezes?

Answer»

Hi i was wondering if anyone can help me out, any help would be greatly appreciated.

well heres my story:

i built this system from the ground up. i tried installing vista and for some reason it would keep freezing at the completion of the installation so it wouldnt GET fully installed. At one time, it finally installed, but it kept crashing on me GIVING me blue screens of death.

assuming that vista was buggy, i tried to install xp home and it went on without problems. unfortunately after a while it became unstable and kept freezing on me. it freezes on me on installation of some things (windows updates, some programs), and when automatic updates turned on, it freezes, and sometimes when my antivirus is updating it freezes, and when burning things, my computer freezes. Watching movies sometimes makes my computer freeze (the screen will freeze, but audio will run for about a min then break up). Also, sometimes just totally random freezes.

also upon freezing, when i click my restart button, xp sometimes freezes on the loading screen. i have to try 2-5 times sometimes in ORDER to successfully get into desktop.

another thing: my computer seems really unstable if i put more than 2gb ram. ive heard xp home cant run 4gb ram, but i tried it, didnt recognize. i tried 3gb ram, xp recognized 3gb but was really unstable (program crashes but no freezing)

i dont know whats happening and its really frustrating, any help appreciated.

specs:
ECS nforce650iSLI
core2quad q6600 2.4ghz
PNY Nvidia 8800gtx 768mb
G Skill 2gb RAM (2 sticks 1gb each)
Western Digital WD2500KS 250gb
Samsung DVD Burner
Thermaltake 850w psu

programs i run:
AIM
MSN
firefox
computer associates antispy and antivirus (packaged with att yahoo dsl service)
utorrent (sorry if its on the "no-no" LIST, hehe)

other notes/questions:
-if my RAM was incompatible with my motherboard, could it cause this?
-all available updates updated (graphics, sound, windows updates)
-ran a quick microsoft MEMORY test once and it cleared
-tried a harddisk checker once and it cleared

again, thank you for any help
OK.... Have you done a Memory test yet....if not... goto http://oca.microsoft.com/en/windiag.asp - this is a memory diagnostic program which you can down load to a cd... hope this helps...hi yeah ive done a memory test, but i think i may have solved the problem.

apparently the RAM i bought was not completely compatible and had issues with my ECS nf650iSLI board. the combination is highly unstable that lead to a lot of freezes. i talked with my RAM manufacturer (Gskill) and they said manually increasing the voltage should solve the problem.

so i increased my voltage from 1.9v where it was automatically set, to 1.95v and my computer was much more stable and i was able to install vista.

so yeah its a really weird problem that i couldnt find the answer for anywhere.

i still have some freezing once in a while, so i might just get a new motherboard. (for some reason my board cant hold more than 2gb and the 3rd memory slot gives me BSOD)

thanks guys

Solve : Restoring computer from backup disks - Vista?

Answer»

After encountering insurmountable problems I was FORCED to reset my Lenovo to its factory settings. This was almost, but not quite, a complete reformat. A couple of months ago I made a 7 DVD backup of my computer which I thought I would be ABLE to use to restore my pc to its ideal state (all my files, favourites, programs, etc.) Unfortunately I find that when I go into Windows restore and try to do the restoration from my backup DISKS I am told that I haven' done a backup! perhaps this is due to the fact that I have restored it to the factory settings, before I had done the backup.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I could use my backup disks to restore everything to its June state?

Also: a minor question, I cannot remember how to avoid having to enter my PASSWORD when I LOG in

Solve : Add program to startup?

Answer»

I WANT to add a program to my windows startup. I'm running Vista. I KNOW how to remove them, but I can't find any information on how to ADD a program to start when windows starts. One WAY to do this is to create a shortcut to the .exe of the program...then place it in Documents and Settings/All Users/Startup folder....That folder doesn't exist in Vista. I found this little utility. It says it works with Vista. I haven't TRIED it yet myself THOUGH. You can give it a try if you like. It's the only thing I could find for you that seems like it would do the trick. I did some reading there on the website and it seems like it's pretty straight forward to use as well.Yes that worked with Vista, thanks!!You're welcome.

Solve : svchost.exe_Net Driver HPZ12 has stopped working?

Answer»

Hi

I have just had to reformat my laptop(only 1 month old) as it just wasn't working and everytime I tried a restore it failed.

I have a sony 1.83gb dual processor laptop which came preloaded with Vista. After reformatting some the sound and NETWORK icons refused to go in the tray in the bottom right hand corner and after removing norton I managed to get that working. I now keep getting the error message svchost.exe_Net Driver HPZ12 has stopped working - is this something I need and what can I do?

Any advise would be great -Thanks
HPZ12 is actually a reference to HP's Print Management Language...

You MAY need to reinstall your printer software or find compatible drivers for Vista.

One should remember this when upgrading, installing, or reinstalling an OPERATING system:

Only have the necessary peripherals plugged in when performing the above:

1) Monitor
2) Keyboard
3) Mouse

If you have anything else INSTALLED when performing an upgrade, install, or reinstall...you're bound to have issues afterwards.

Good luck and LET us know how it goes after you reinstall your printer software.

Solve : MS Outlook Frequent contacts?

Answer»

I have a few questions about MS outlook frequent contacts.

First when a user sends an email and they never have sent that person an email they look it up in the address book, and the next time they send them an email all they have to do is type a few letters of their name and it will show up in the 'To' field. How do we delete emails from that list? I've gone in the Frequent contacts list, but that email address is not there.

I ALSO have a user that wants to share her frequent contacts (dont ask why, i'm not sure), but I cant seem to find a way to browse to that folder on the other machine. I've given the other user permission by right clicking and going to sharing then adding their name to the list and giving them owner rights (just to test), but when they try to connect they connect to the contacts and not frequent contacts.

All computers are running XP SP2 and we have an exchange server running. Any thoughts?I dont recall this happening in Outlook, what version of Outlook are you using? Express, Office, 5.5, 6.0, the one that came with Vista, Live Mail (BETA)?

As I recall, you must have a contact in your address book to see their name appear as you type a new email.
Delete the contact from your address book, if you dont want them there.

You might also try (since Outlook is related to Internet Explorer, cousins) going to:
Start> Control Panel> "Internet Options"
Find "Content", and click "Autocomplete"
Disable auto-completion of "forms"

This may disable autocompletion on the To: field in email
We are using Office 2003. We actually just converted from Groupwise and we did it in stages so some PEOPLE were on groupwise and others were using exchange. Well some users still have the old groupwise email address when they type in a few letters of their name, but that email address is not in their address book. I'm kinda confused on what this frequent contact list actually does. Does the autocomplete option in IE store the email addresses? I will try that option tomorrow when i GET in. Since IE and Outlook are "related", in a sense, its possible that that is why they are being stored.

It might be worth TRYING, since it could tie into the autocomplete system, if you still want to autocomplete, and you just dont want the old addresses, try clearing the form history... Didnt work, i cleared it, and even turned it off. Restarted IE and outlook, but nothing. Couldnt find anything on google about this either. On my first Google search, I found this:
http://ask-leo.com/where_do_outlooks_autocomplete_suggestions_come_from.html

If the CTRL+K Suggestion doesn't work, try resetting the database.

Quote

The nickname list is something the Outlook builds over time as you send and receive email. Essentially it collects all the email addresses that you've sent email to as they've appeared in the To, Cc or Bcc fields. That's Outlook's first source of autocomplete suggestions.

Outlook also appears to sometimes take suggestions from your address book. It's unclear exactly when it decides to, or rather when it decides not to. It might be related to how many suggestions it was able to find in the nickname list. Regardless, what's important is that entries in your address book are not always presented.

It's frustrating to type the first few characters of someone's name knowing that they're in your address book, but they don't show.

There is a solution.

Press CTRL+K.

Ctrl+K is a shortcut for the "Check Names" button, also on the toolbar when you're composing a message. Check names will look at the characters you've typed so far and compare them to your address book entries. If there's only one match it completes the entry. If there's more than one match then it presents a list for you to choose from. And the list will not include items from the nickname list. But the name you just entered will get added to the nickname list so the next time you use it, it should be there.

Personally, I think it's more confusing that it needs to be. But there it is.

By the way, deleting an address from the nickname list is also very easy: when you see it being suggested use the up or down arrow keys to highlight it, and then press delete.

The nickname list that outlook maintains can occasionally become corrupt. To repair it or to reset it completely Microsoft has provided this knowledgebase article.

Keith seems to be right.

It happens with nearly all versions of Outlook, you simply send a mail to any person, and the next time you type the initials they COME up.

Regardless whether they are stored in the address book or not.

Most probably it caches it somewhere, dunno where Quote from: vibhor_agarwalin on August 10, 2007, 12:09:03 AM

As described above in the reply before yours... Ooops,

I read the post but didn't see the link. I know that ,
The first end task the MS outlook.
The second you need delete this file outlook.NK2 from C:\Documents and Settings\USER ID\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook. Then open the MS outlook, and you type the initials, see~~~~ they don’t come up.

Solve : XP to Vista...??

If I were to install Vista over XP WOULD all of my existing programs be uninstalled? It's just I have some programs on my OS that I would not be able to re-install if they were to dissapear. Do you MEAN Windows anytime upgrade? Cause that ONE is only for Vista to a HIGHER Vista.
I can't think of a way how that would be technically possible.

Jonas Or you could dual boot ......thats always a option..... Not every program needs to be reinstalled, especially when upgrading, instead of doing a fresh install.

Vista can be upgraded from as far back as Windows 2000.

What you really need to check though is to see if the programs you want to keep are compatable with Vista.Quote

Is Windows XP required for a Vista upgrade version? For Newegg.com's listing for Microsoft Windows Vista Home Basic Upgrade - Retail, I saw: "This is an upgrade kit for upgrading from Windows XP or 2000." Surely, the other versions of Vista are the same for the upgrade requirements.
http://www.microsoft.com/uk/windows/products/windowsvista/buyorupgrade/upgradepaths.mspx

I erred, slightly. You cannot PERFORM an upgrade from Windows 2000, you have to do a clean install, BUT, you still can pay the discounted upgrade license price.

What you have done is illegal, read the EULA, one OS on one machine is all that is allowed, just because you can do it does not mean you should.

If I have misunderstood what you have done I apologise in advance, if I haven't I doubt you will get any assistance here .
Buscrew, I guess you are American. Maybe you would like to know that not everybody lives in the USA with its cockamamie DMCA. What san did would not be "illegal" in the EU where I am glad to say I live. It might be a technical EULA breach but it would not be "illegal". His Vista CD is his property, he paid for it, so don't go calling people criminals. You Americans burn me up with your "OH! It's illegal!" all the time.

No I am not American, it doesn't matter where you live, it's illegal. He may own the DVD, but not what is on it, he like everybody else gets a license to use it, provided he complies with the EULA., even more so as he states it's an OEM version not a full retail copy. OEM is strictly limited to the machine it was purchased with, and the license dies with that machine, installing it onto another is not a "Technical Breach" but an illegal use of the software.

I like a lot of other people pay full price for the software I use. I also know how to download and use pirate versions. I choose not to, as my conscience does not allow me to do it.

The point I was making was that if someone chooses to install an OS outside of the EULA, and then corrupts his PC, why should\would anybody want to help him recover it. I notice from your post you did not offer any constructive help, only choosing to rebuke me without knowing the facts, and making incorrect assumptions about my nationality.Quote from: Buscrew on September 09, 2007, 10:11:59 AM

I repeat, it's not "illegal", here, despite what you wrote, which is wrong.

If you're not American, why do you spell "license" with an 's'?

Microsoft and other EULAs are not even completely upheld by many US courts.

The enforceability of an EULA depends on several factors, one of them being the court in which the case is heard. Most courts that have addressed the validity of the shrinkwrap license agreements have found them to be invalid, characterizing them as contracts of adhesion, unconscionable, and/or unacceptable pursuant to the U.C.C. —see, for instance, Step-Saver Data Systems, Inc. v. Wyse Technology (939 F.2d 91), Vault Corp. v. Quaid Software Ltd. (at harvard.edu) and Rich, Mass Market Software and the Shrinkwrap License (23 Colo. Law 1321.17). A minority of courts have determined that the shrinkwrap license agreement is valid and enforceable: see ProCD, Inc. v. Zeidenberg (at findlaw.com), Microsoft v. Harmony Computers (846 F. Supp. 208, 212, E.D.N.Y. 1994), Novell v. Network Trade Center (at harvard.edu), and Arizona Cartridge Remanufacturers Association Inc. v. Lexmark International Inc. may have some bearing as well.

The 7th Circuit and 8th Circuit subscribe to the "licensed and not sold" argument, while most other circuits do not. In addition, the contracts' enforceability depends on whether the state has passed the Uniform Computer Information Transactions Act (UCITA) or Anti-UCITA (UCITA Bomb Shelter) laws. In Anti-UCITA states, the Uniform Commercial Code (UCC) has been amended to either specifically define software as a good (thus making it fall under the UCC), or to disallow contracts which specify that the terms of contract are subject to the laws of a state that has passed UCITA.

Recently, publishers have BEGUN to encrypt their software packages to make it impossible for a user to install the software without either agreeing to the license agreement or violating the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) and foreign counterparts.

The DMCA specifically provides for reverse engineering of software for interoperability purposes, so there was some controversy as to whether software license agreement clauses which restrict this are enforceable. The Eighth Circuit case of Blizzard v. BnetD determined that such clauses are enforceable, following the Federal Circuit decision of Baystate v. Bowers.

That's just the USA.

In Great Britain, where consumer law broadly follows European Union norms, the Unfair Terms in Consumer Contracts Regulations 1999 lay down that terms not individually negotiated in a consumer contract are unfair and hence non-binding. The EULA comes after the sale. Microsoft [for example] has no special exemption from contract law. Contracts don't come into force PRIOR to them being agreed.

I appreciate that Microsoft WISHES it can - AFTER THE SALE - substitute a contract which overrides UK or European contract law, but the plain fact is that it cannot.

Thus, the following statement is howlingly incorrect, even within the USA, and even more so outside of it. Suck it up.

Quote
it doesn't matter where you live, it's illegal

Finally, it seems to me stupid and cowardly to call the violation of an (actually invalid) commercial contract "illegal" and then hope to intimidate people into feeling that they have committed a criminal act when they have not.

How did "Buscrew" the registered user become "Mundesley" the "guest"?

Please don't be sorry. You did NOTHING wrong. Nothing at all. I hope you realise that.

San, you go right ahead and do what you want with your own property! Every forum gets blowhards like the guy who chose to cut and run when his ignorance was exposed.

You have done nothing illegal.

You can surely recover your machine to a new install using your Dell OEM recovery disk and the D: recovery partition? You may have to wipe out Vista first, but you can repeat later the steps to install it.

You have nothing to be sorry for san. We only learn by asking questions and as contrex said you've most likely not done anything wrong.

To answer your original question I think the answer is no. I'm pretty sure you would need a proper Microsoft installation disc in order to make it dual boot; since you most likely don't have any control over where the restoration partition installs XP.

Oh and Buscrew aka Mundesley, you criticize contrex for not adding any constructive info to this thread... where exactly is your constructive input? All you've done is call the OP a criminal and prove you don't have the legal knowledge to back that accusation.

EDIT: If the OEM disc allows you to decide where to install Vista, you could do it by installing XP first from the recovery partition and then installing Vista on another partition.

these are the folders in D..saved as a text file...

[saving space - attachment deleted by admin]How old is this Compaq because it appears these recovery files are for an HP...HP did buy Compaq. You cant take a recovery partition and put it on a computer as a dual boot. The reason that this did not look familiar is you probably hit the 2nd "R" prompt that comes up in the setup process...this is called the Recovery Console and is used to repair XP...

I would try again and follow the prompts for a Repair Install and see if it completes...

Repair Install of XP

I suggest reading it thru and printing out a copy for reference...
This should'nt affect the current Vista install if done properly...

Solve : Need help with my D drive?

Answer»

I installed Windows XP professional to my laptop, but after a week I just notice that
on my D drive instead of having all my bootable files.. I only have one folder that it call System Volume Information and my Recycle Icon...on my C drive is where I have all my bootable files, my question is how can I move all my bootable files to my D drive, since that's the drive that I created to have all my bootable files in.

Thanks GUYS!Xp by default loads on the C: drive you would be better of moving all your other files to the D: drive. Are they 2 seperate drives or 1 drive that you have partitioned? If they are seperate drives you may be able to FORCE xp to the D drive during a clean install. There is no really good reason to have the OS on the D: drive...LEAVE it on C: and use D: for storage.
As stated above no matter where you install XP or Vista Windows will still need to write certain files to C: so the most efficient SETUP is leaving it on C:.Ok I will leaved the OS on drive C: And its only one Drive..... When I was installing XP I made a mistake in the partition...by giving Drive C: the space of 73.4GB and drive D: only 1.07GB, so the next question is, Its ok to leave my two drives the way they are? because I'm saving all my stuff in drive C: and I have nothing on Drive D:

Thanks for your help guys!!You could change the partition after you get all of your data off drive c:, then do a clean install after formatting.I'll do That....Thanks!!

Solve : how to turn off parent control as adminstrator in windows vista?

Answer»

I have a brand new computer with windows vista basic . I have NEVER set a parent control on it. I am the adminstrator. I downloaded family fued 2. Whe I try to play it windows tells me no because of parent control are set. I havent set up any account yet. I am the only user on this computer. How do I turn this off in aminstrator mode. Is there a hidden adminstration or did Compaq set this them self. This should be interesting...have you tried turning off the UAC (User Account Control) first? Click on the Start button and type in User Accounts, then type in User Accounts; click on the button and it should give you an OPTION in the new window to turn off UAC. ALSO try searching for Parental Controls in the Start button. I forget how to navigate through thosae options. I'm at work right now (Dell) but i dont have a Vista machine available at the moment Yes I turned off the UAC. I went in to parent control, but the adminstrator cant set parent control on him self. Is there a hidden way to get into adminstrator and get rid of the parent control. I dont know if windows vista came set this way. I DIDNT have any accounts set up. You're right. You can't set parental control on Administrators. I know you said that you haven't created any accounts, but when you go to the User Accounts screen, what users does it let you choose from? Also have you made sure that it's the Vista parental controls and not some program installed by Compaq??It only shows adminstrator as the only user. i dont know if compaq might have set something. I cant find any program that could be a parent control software. You cant get in to adminstrator to change stuff. It has to be hidden. compaq might have set something on the adminstrator. Cant get into adminstrator to CHECK, it must be hidden I'm a bit confused as to your wording -- Administrator is the only account, but you can't get into administrator to check because it's hidden?

Sign in as whoever you can. Create a new user, create it as an adult with no restrictions, and use that as your primary account. From there you can then change Administrator's restrictions, but it's still a good idea to not use Administrator as your primary. That is what i did. I made a user account. I set up parent control to play all games and no restriction on anything. There is a bug in the game. It will let you play the game as a user but if you sign in as the adminstrator, it tell you you cant play because of parents control. Even tho there is no parent control in adminstrator. But if you turn off parent control on the user account, it wont let you play the game no more. Thank you guys for the helpwow, if you right click on the game icon and choose Run as Administrator, under any account, do you still get the weird message....also try reinstalling to see if there is an option in the game installation to bypass the parental controls.......worse come to worse, call compaq to see if they know anything

Vista is becoming more and more compatible with several devices and in our home network we have 1 PC with Vista Home Premium and in the beginning it could connect to all our printers now a few months later it is able to connect to 2 of the 3 printers
And he can't connect to the 3rd one because it is shared trough a XP PC.
Maybe they will also fix that Issue but I'm not sure about that.

Jonas Check the manual on that machine to see if the BIOS will support hard drive selection at startup...
If so there is an easy out for you if this is really what you want...

Buy a second hard drive.
Collect all the WinME drivers including MBoard sound and VIDEO for that machine.
FDisk the new HDD to FAT 32 and format it on another machine to prepare it for use.

Remove the Vista drive.
Install the new one as master and boot up with the WinME CD in.

Follow the INSTRUCTIONS to completely install ME.
Then install all the drivers you collected and re-boot.
Check each device to make sure all is running well especially the network if you plan to go online.

When you are finished you can add the Vista HDD.
You will now be able to boot into either OS using the drive selector in the BIOS at startup time

Note: In this setup if you boot to Vista that drive becomes C: and the ME drive becomes D:
And vice-versa...booting to ME makes the ME drive C: and the Vista drive D:

As long as you stay organised you should have no issues with this setup.

The other thing to remember is the ME Windows will not see the Vista drive as one is FAT 32 and one is NTFSthanks alot for the info patio,i'll give that a try...theted The only reason i would suggest LEAVING Vista on is you may void your warranty if you go ahead and remove it...check with the manuf.

Solve : Windows Vista - it went left handed on me ...?

Answer»

It's not that big of an issue, but I'm extremely annoyed. Now when I hover, alts show up to the left of my cursor. In programs like psp7 and openCanvas and everything ELSE, the drop down menus now stick to the left of the screen. When I right click and hover on an OPTION (such as if I right click and hover over 'new'), it shows up to the left of the ORIGINAL list.

Please help ... I'm slightly obsessive compulsive about these things and I'm GOING crazy right now ;_; I think it happened after I re-installed my tablet driver for the millionth time, since Vista rejects it occasionally. Or when I got rid of the on screen keyboard that I'd finally figured out how to get rid of.Look for an updated driver compatible with Vista...uninstall the tablet driver if an updated driver is not available...or a System RESTORE may be necessary.

Solve : Upgrading to Vista??

Answer»

I have run the Vista compatibility test on my machine and I do seem to have the minimum requirements. But does anyone know if it WOULD run efficiently based on the machine specs.

Also, would I be able to use the Aero 3D feature? I know my graphics card is the minimum required to run Vista but not sure about it running Aero 3D. Does Aero 3D use DirectX10?

Specs.

Intel PIII 933MHz
512MB ram
160gb hard drive
ATI radeon 9550

Thanks.I'd recommend 1GB of RAM and possibly a faster CPU.
See here for more information - the upgrade advisor will TELL you what you need to know.OK, but I guess I'm trying to figure out what kind of performance I'll get with my current machine as it does meet the minimum requirements. Also, that site doesn't mention if Aero 3D uses DirectX10 cards? You will get good performance as Calum says with 1G of RAM...but running Aero ---not so hot.that site doesn't mention if Aero 3D uses DirectX10 cards? << ??

Aero 3D should run without any x10 video card..... it's just the more ram
minimum 1 gig will make it sing better

below* Thanks Calum, thats what i was trying to say Quote from: delluser07 on June 12, 2007, 09:50:07 AM

OK, but I guess I'm trying to figure out what kind of performance I'll get with my current machine as it does meet the minimum requirements. Also, that site doesn't mention if Aero 3D uses DirectX10 cards?
The upgrade advisor will tell you how well Vista will run, or at least what version it will run.
And Aero does not need a DX10 card at all.I'll install Vista (probably upgrade RAM) and try to dual-boot with my current XP SP2 installation. I've READ some programs/games do not work with Vista.

Thanks! That's a good idea, then you get the best of each OS.
Think about whether you need Vista first though, otherwise you might be wasting your money.

This part depends on the size of your monitor. If 1024x768 doesn't look right, simply try out some of the other resolutions until you get the desired display.

Solve : Resolved: How do you enable hibernation in Vista??

I've tried the command line thing that is suggested everywhere (powercfg -H ON) I get a blank reply and it goes back to the prompt. However the hibernate option is still doesn't exist. Vista... its in the subject line

Vista isn't keen on Tabs, its easier to use individual menus.

Right click your desktop, click "Personalize"
Select "Screensaver"
At the BOTTOM, there is a "Create Power Settings"
Select your current plan, and click "Change"
Hibernation is in there, under Advanced.

It seems that Microsoft is no longer greatly suggesting that you shutdown, but that you put your computer in sleep, unless you have a laptop running on battery. Thanks, that worked. Ive tried looking in there but I never noticed the advanced button.Quote from: Soviet Genius on August 06, 2007, 09:11:50 PM
Thanks, that worked. Ive tried looking in there but I never noticed the advanced button.
No problem, there are some things that are getting harder to find in the newer Windows Operating systems, then what they were before New problem: the computer turns on as soon as it turns on. ANOTHER thing: this is actually pointless. The computer boots up faster when I choose the turn off option, Vista is really screwed up.............Enhanced hibernation support will be offered in SP1, whenever it comes out.

You might want to START a new topic about problems with Hibernate staying in Hibernate.

If you have a newer desktop, its not a bad idea to just LEAVE it in Standby.
(But dont let it run in standby for days on end...)

Solve : Windows XP/Vista DVD burning?

Answer»

Why can you burn CDs with the Windows XP operating system but not DVDs? Is this also the case with Windows Vista?

ThanksAt this very moment, I'm burning DVD's on Windows XP. You need a DVD burner.I'm pretty sure what he means is burn dvd's without installing other software. In Visa you can burn data dvds without ANYTHING extra. I'm not much sure after that.Do you have a DVD burner ? ?Yes, I have a DVD burner. I know that you can buy software such as Nero to burn DVDs, but why can't Windows XP burn DVDs by itself? Why can it burn CDs with no other software but not DVDs?You can't burn DVDs because Microsoft didn't implement that feature.
I'm sorry if you were LOOKING for a different answer, but that is what it all boils down to. Microsoft didn't THINK it was worth including.

If you need a program to burn DVDs with check out CDBurnerXP. It's free.

Solve : Folder Security Settings in Vista?

I made a BIG mistake by trying to change the security settings on my external HARD drive folder.
I removed all of the "system" "users" "creator owner" access.
My hard drive was not accessible giving me this message everytime...
"f: is not accessible. Access Denied."
I then returned into the security settings and tried adding some permissions ful control to administrator creator owner users etc...
Suprisingly enough i can acess the folders and files.
THe odd part?
I cant delete any of the files and i keep getting this message: "the recycle bin seems to be corrupted. would you like to EMPTY the recycle bin now?"
i press yes and it opens a window saying: You need PERMISSION to do this.
i then have three buttons: try again or skip or cancel.
How can i reset EVERYTHING back to default here?
I just want everything back as normal.
I dont knwo if this helps but i added back all the system creator owner administrator everyone user groups blah blah and gave them all FULL CONTROL. But one of EM has a red X on his icon and its the Administrator one...
Also the CREATOR OWNER has "special" permissions i dont know if this is a problem also

Solve : Windows Error...an interesting problem?

Answer»

Hi, i got a problem that is very annoying. I decided i would reformat my computer REINSTALLING windows in the process. The first time i installed windows it would go successfully until i started installing additional programs. At some point where i install programs i would get this "Windows Explorer Error" with this "Dr Watson Postmortem" error box etc whenever the DESKTOP loads. When i click "don't send" it usually refreshes the screen and i'm right to go (happens whenever i turn on the computer and log in). I reinstall windows several times hoping to find out what PROGRAM was the source of the problem. I figured maybe it was because i was installing to many programs at the same time and to solve this error problem i basically installed all programs one at a time and restarting after each program is installed.

The problem seemed to be resolved but i manage to find the errors popping up again whenever i access a video folder on the desktop. I get the error whenever their are thumbnails of videos in a folder, so as soon as i double click i get an "windows error" when the thumbnails begin to load. When the "windows explorer" error box appears on the screen it still allows me to use the computer i went back one folder attempting to to change the properties (customize) of the folders (the type of folder) from videos to documents however as soon as i click properties and change the tabs to "customize" this "dr watson postmortem" error appears and freezes my computer, i then have to log off and log back on. The Dr Watson postmortem error + Windows Explorer errors appear whenever i attempt to change the properties of that video folder.

Hope you can help.I would download and run.................

Solve : Windows XP Control Panel Question. Please Help.?

Answer»

Hello. I have a question about the Windows XP Control Panel. A while back, I switched the Windows XP Display to the Windows Classic Display.

Display Properties > Appearance Tab > Windows and Buttons ( from Windows XP style to Windows Classic Style )

Now, I have changed it back to the XP theme. During that time, the control panel was in Classic mode as well. Now, I cannot remember how to change it back to the XP theme ( it is still somehow in classic view). Please help me, and thank you in advance.

P.S.
How do people take pictures of their desktop and where does that picture go?First of all you can change the display of your control panel on the left hand side. There should be something there to change it back. I can't verify that 100% now because right now I'm on a vista machine...unfortunately. As for taking a pic of your desktop. All you have to do is hit printscreen, which is usually located right above the insert key. This saves it to your clipboard. Next open paint and paste it in there. Save it as a JPEG IMAGE. I hope that is what you meant by taking a picture of your desktop.Wow, the capture is 2.25MB . How do I MINIMIZE it so I can attach it.

Also, there is nothing to the left or right of the window. It's as if you opened My Documents. It has a white background with thumbnails of Accessibility Options, Add Hardware, ect.Try switching it back and then to winxp theme again while RESTARTING your computer inbetween the setting changesI fixed the problem. I went to System in the Control Panel and fixed the Performance Settings in the Advanced Tab. Thanks guys.

@programming_pat
I think that would have been harmful in some sort. If you press alt + print SCREEN, you will get a capture of only the active window. This will keep you from capturing the whole desktop.

To shrink the previously mentioned file, you could use WINZIP or winrar for compression.

Solve : Bad Decision=non responsive keyboard and mouse?

Answer»

I recently purchased a new desktop with VISTA on it and I attempted to install my wireless keyboard and mouse from my previous (XP) computer.

After installation I was prompted that it has not been tested with Vista, but I stupidly CHOSE to proceed anyway. After installing the wireless set I rebooted my computer and now that I'm at the login screen (PW required) and I can't do anything. I'm stuck using my old computer now.

My wireless mouse is nowhere to be found and my wireless keyboard syncs with the wireless hub, but not my computer. My USB keyboard and mouse do not respond at all.

I've tried:
-Powering on and off my computer using the power button on the TOWER, since I can't use my mouse or keyboard to power down properly
-Different batteries
-Syncing the keyboard with the hub many times
-Powering down PC and unplugging the wireless hub and USB keyboard and mouse and replugging in all but the wireless hub
-Cussing at my computer as well as myself

Any ideas?
Thanks in advance for your (hopefully) quick response!ever think about calling microsoft? for help or the company of the mouse and keyboard no way to get into it ehh? on my PC my screen still works like there some file tat my friend made u can acces arrow keys and get a on screen board just hard to use.....Quote from: wefr0 on August 03, 2007, 07:22:21 PM

ever think about calling microsoft? for help or the company of the mouse and keyboard no way to get into it ehh?
Thats why this forum exists, to avoid calling people, and find an alternative support.

Anyways:
Plug in your old keyboard into your new computer.
Before Windows starts, press F8 a few times (thats before you see the Windows Vista loading screen)

Select Safemode from the list.

Once you get logged in, right CLICK "My Computer", "Properties"
On the left hand menu, select "Device Manager"
Find your USB keyboard. Uninstall the driver by double-clicking the device (Should be under "Human Interface Devices" or "Keyboards")
Select the "Drivers" Tab, and select "Uninstall"

Then, restart your computer

Plug the USB Wireless Keyboard again, and let Windows install the device without the CD provided by the manufacture.

Solve : Question about software compatibility with Windows 3.11 and newer versions?

Answer»

Hi Everyone,

I have some software (for a laboratory instrument) that was purchased ~10 YEARS ago and runs on a pentium comuter with Windows 3.11. However, I'm worried that the computer it runs on is gettting up in the years and could die on me at some point in the near future. Also, newer printers don't seem to support Windows 3.11 anymore making the computer less useful to me. The cost to update the software to run on a new version of Windows is ~$15k, which is an amount that I would like to avoid having to pay.

My question is, do new computers support software that runs on Windows 3.11? If not, are there any relatively easy/cheap WAYS to resurrect software that was written for an ancient O/S to something modern? I don't mind paying a few thousand dollars, but $15k seems excessive.

Thanks very MUCH for any advice you guys can give me.

--Richardummmm.... wow..... i don't know, maybe some of our senior member can helpWindows 3.x and before ran 16-bit programs. The newer stuff will run it but not efficiently. I've heard that Vista won't touch 16-bit...go figure

Just had a thought If you set up a virtual MACHINE (M$ Virtual PC) you should be able to run 3.x and the software with it.

Alan <>< Yeah a virtual machine might be worth LOOKING into. Then you can use a modern computer with a modern OS and then run windows 3.1 in a virtual machine. And MS Virtual PC is free.
BUT you need to make sure that you're able to connect that laboratory equipment so windows on the virtual machine can find it.. that might be tricky. There's always the option to stay at XP or below...not touching Vista and run it in MSDos Compatibility Mode which is in everything up to and including XP...

Solve : Windows Update won't update!?

Answer»

Windows (Vista) advises me that there are new updates available. I click the box and Windows Update looks for updates. After five minutes or so I am notified that "Windows Could Not Search For New Updates". The CODE is 80070002. I have clicked the help link and followed the instructions which are supposed to solve this problem but it won't go away.

I have tried updating with Zone Alarm firewall and Avast Anti-virus disabled but had no luck.could it be pirate vista? I have got a few copys for pirate vista updates fine for me , only assumeing he has a pirate THERES a update that can completely shut the OS down so ive been told by a few eggheads when you 1st install vista the updates run without you knowing .......... i actually wish i could help this guy out *sigh* vistas a pain in the *censored* , i dont blame people for getting ILLEGAL copys its way to pricey for what it is ........... i have a legit version as well though so i aint all bad No, I have a legitimate copy of Vista which came pre-installed with my Lenovo. Windows Update was working fine until I downloaded and ran a registry cleaner. After that big mistake I found that my scanner didn't work and some of my other stuff had to be re-set up. EVERYTHING works now except Windows Update and Windows System Restore. I was able to restore my system using System Restore in Lenovo Care.Quote

No, I have a legitimate copy of Vista which came pre-installed with my Lenovo.
just cuz something's pre-installed doesnt mean it legitimate. try going to the microsoft support website and have them check to see if you're copy of windows is genuine or not.

Quote
Windows Update was working fine until I downloaded and ran a registry cleaner

which cleaner did you use?

did you choose to backup registry changes?

you might be able to restore those registry entries which were deleted. My Vista is definitely legitimate. Widows Update used to work before I installed the abovementioned registry cleaner. Unfortunately I have removed that software and can't remember what it was called. This was stupide as the software did create a backup but I don't know where it is.

Lenovo Support reckons that the registry cleaner planted a bug which prevents both Windows Update and Windows Restore working so that I can't go back to a time when I didn't have the bug! They suggest taking my machine to a computer repair shop or FORMATTING the hard drive and starting again. Neither suggestion appeals to me muchI agree...not attractive options...

Try Heresometimes, when you uninstall a program, the directory folder might still exist, however empty or almost empty it might be.

you should check in your program files folder to see if you can recall what that program was called. and you might find your registry backup in the directory folder too.

Solve : Problem with computer?

Answer»

Hi I have two questions...

1). you know when you right click on an empty place on the DESKTOP and a menu appears (the menu including the display option)?

When I load my computer, and I right click on the desktop for the very first time after having powered on, my computer hangs for a long moment and then after about a minute or two, then the menu appears. How can I fix that problem? Or is this a problem in some kind of windows settings?

2). When windows starts, in the first few minutes, it seems that the CPU is running at 100%, as I see the hard disk light constant on, which I believe should not HAPPEN, and I have checked the start up and I feel I don't have a lot of STUFF that should TAKE up so much CPU and cause my computer to hang for that time. What seems to be the problem now and how to fix?

Thanks for all the help!

In my experience Vista takes a while to get fully loaded and ready and can be very unresponsive for the first few minutes. (Pretty much the reason I've switched back to XP.)
The recommended system requirements for Home Premium also specifies 1GB of RAM. So since your system has less it will be more sluggish.

Removing any unneeded PROGRAMS from your startup can help depending on how much you have running.

#4. what was the exact message, and where did you see that message?Well I installed it around midnight and I had windows xp before. When I go to "my computer" it shows the (D:)ram "meter" as red and almost full. It wasn't exactly a message...what else do u need?well how much free room is on your hard drive, and if you know, how big is your swap file? also.... does anything run slowly?
'do you have a performance monitoring program? if not just check task manager. it should show you the size of your swap file, your CPU usage, and your ram usage etc. check through the tabs though because i'm not sure how that is with vista... aaaand then POST back well as for my (D:) i have 462 free mbs out of 8.44 GB
and i have no idea what a swap file is..im not very computer SMART
as for cpu usage it say 2%...52%...100%...2%..its never idled sooo high at least not that frequently as for physical memory it says 45%...how many hard drives do you have?
they can affect the physical memory, as a swap file is used for the same sort of things for the most part, and a swap file can be hundreds of megabytes, but if you don't have much room on your hard drive then it will degrade the performance a LOT, especially if you have vista. but if you have another hard drive aswell, it shouldn't matter.Quote from: fkcast on July 31, 2007, 11:34:50 AM

Windows Vista does not have My Computer; it has Computer. And, the Computer panel shows hard drives and removable storage devices; it does not show a "ram 'meter'". I really don't see how anybody can give a response to your question until you get your TERMINOLOGY straight so that we know exactly what you're talking about.

And, tell us the hardware specs on your computer.

Solve : deleting programs?

Answer»

could someone explain how to delete programs that are running in the box where the START is

On XP anyway.

right click "Start" select "properties". Now you should have a box that says "Taskbar and Start Menu Properties" with the start menu tab opened.

Select "Customize" on the right of the box.

Now you have "Customize Start Menu", with the General Tab open.

Select "Clear List" on the right side again, in the programs section. You can also DETERMINE here, the number of programs SHOWN in your start list.

BTW these are only shortcuts to recently USED programs.

If I'm understanding your post right, this is what your LOOKING for.I think what you just told him to do DELETES the saved list in the run command. I'm not 100% sure how to do it in XP as I'm currently sitting at a Vista machine but you should just be able to right click on the icon and select delete or remove from this list. If I'm correct that you wanted to remove the item from the start menu list.On XP it clears the start menu list in one swipe.

But like you said, a person can just right click each one, and select "remove from this list".do you mean start - all program?& all the shown program?just remove it from the list or DELETE it?
as for remove it just right click on the program, select delete, don't worry the program still in the pc,if you want to DELETE it, go to control panel - add or remove and just select the program then uninstall..is it that hard or i missunderstood the questions again Well, the question was not extremely clear.

And it looks like this could have been a hit and run, since there has been no response to anything.

Solve : CPU Priority?

Answer»

Hello

I am USING Windows Vista, and there are two applications in particular that I want to change the CPU PRIORITY. Windows Backup, and Defragmenter, as far as I am CONCERNED, run at the regular CPU priority levels.

I read, after Googling, that the only way to change a tasks priority is to manually set them or use a command line parementer with the Start command and a batch file with scheduling (not quite what I want). I also read that you can download programs that will monitor task activity, and will change the CPU priority for you.

Since I have a laptop, my hard drive RPM's aren't the greatest on earth, so, defragmenting slows it down, thus, why I dont currently use the automatic defragment, but I do use backups. How can I make it so that the backup task, and the defragmenter tasks load at a low CPU utilization? (Rather, what is the BEST way?)

Thanks,
Zylstrayou can set task priority
Code: [Select]Const NORMAL = 32
Const IDLE = 64
Const HIGH_PRIORITY = 128
Const REALTIME = 256
Const BELOW_NORMAL = 16384
Const ABOVE_NORMAL = 32768
Set objWMIService = GetObject("winmgmts:{impersonationLevel=impersonate}!\\.\root\cimv2")
Set colProcesses = objWMIService.ExecQuery("Select * from Win32_Process Where Name = 'Notepad.exe'")
For Each objProcess in colProcesses
objProcess.SetPriority(NORMAL)
Next
you will need to find out the process name of windows backup and defragementer

Solve : Num Lock problem?

Answer»

:'(I'm running Windows Vista and Internet Explorer browser. My question is :'(the number lock does not acivate the key pad. have tried ps/2 and usb Keyboards. Unit is newly built. has Pentium D 915, 2gb DDR II, Abit IP-95 Mb. have run desktop mechanic to clean registry---HelpThe num lock does not light up when your computer is started up, you mean?
Or the num lock does not work at all?

What version of Vista are you using? Basic, Premium, or Ultimate (or another version)

Possible causes:
Incorrect BIOS value
Improper setup of the Users option (user login settings, with the "REQUIRE CTRL+ALT+DEL before the login screen?"
Pre-installed Vista system was incorrectly configured by the computer manufacture.

the num lock light is on but keypad does not respond. using vista home premium. Is this a PC, or a laptop?
the comp is desktop, this my fourth sys i have put TOGETHER, the mobo is one that i had in another sys but didn't have this problem. although i had a bad checksum because of a fan that was not properly seated on the MB, maybe i fried something? i have a new MB and am THINKING of installing to see if its MB problems or software. also tried registry cleaner and installing wireless KB to see if the software drivers with the KB would solve the problem but no luck, however i do like the new KB -------thanks for the replys----MoChecksum error?
Do you remember what the message it gave to you was?
(I dont recall checksums being CAUSED by fans.... just CMOS Data, which brings my next great clonfusion:

Have you tried resetting the CMOS?
(Power off the PC (duh), unplug it, Remove the CMOS battery for 10 >minutes< and then reinsert, and plug everything back in, and restart)the fan was on the heat sink. what i should have said was the heatsink was not seated over the processor properly. the comp shut down about three times, put rhe checksum question in my search engine and one of the suggestions was that the heatsink could be not seated properly. i installed a new hestsink and fan after pulling the board out. i installed a new board with the same processor in the comp with a new heatsink and fan, that unit runs fine. i used the old board in the sys that i am having a problem with. it has a new heatsink and fan installed also, it has the problem with the numlock problem, so i don't know if its a hardware problem or a DRIVER problem in a new installation of Vista on this sys. don't know anything about pulling the battery?? Hope this is not rwo confusing!!!!!!1 thanks for the help ----Mo

Solve : Chkdsk and Scandisk?

Answer»

What is the main difference between chkdsk and scan disk?

From what I have read, they are the same
I suppose, put simply, Scandisk came with DOS/Win9x and works with FAT32, Win2k/XP/vista chkdsk is NT and handles ntfs as well. chkdsk can fix more errors.

Wikipedia SAYS...

SCANDISK or ScanDisk is a utility in MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows systems which checks and repairs filesystems and bad clusters. It was introduced in MS-DOS version 6.2. Previous versions of MS-DOS supplied only the simpler, purely text-based program CHKDSK. In Windows 95 onwards, SCANDISK also had a graphical user interface, although the DOS program retained the TUI. The disk scanning utility under Windows NT, Windows 2000 and Windows XP is also called CHKDSK (even though it is different from the MS-DOS CHKDSK) and has the ability to CHECK NTFS disk drives.

Hmm...

So they are pretty MUCH the same thing, but ONE had GUI instead of CLI...

Okay
Thanks, Contrex
