Solve : Login Screen?

Answer»

I just bought my new computer about a week AGO, came with Vista Home Premium.

I have my part of the computer set up so that I have to LOG in with a password.
But lately, it hasn't been asking me for it.
Actually, it doesn't even go to the login screen at all anymore!
I SHUT down the computer, I bring it back up, it tells me "welcome"...
and then it goes straight to my user: Britain.

I have some really personal info on here already, and if some other people were to get on
they could find it, and that's why I set up a password!

Is there any way that I could re-program it to make it go to the login screen at start-up?1 Click on Start
2 Click on Control Panel
3 Double-click on User Accounts
4 Click on "CHANGE the way users log on or off"
5 Check "Use the Welcome Screen"
6 Click on APPLY Options
7 Close the User Accounts window and the Control Panel
8 Reboot your computer, the classic login prompt will be usedI can't find the 4th thing. There is no check boxes, or anything else.
I did everything up to that point, but there I'm stumped.

Is there another way to get to it?Its on the bottom of the user accounts section.

Look carefully, its there, you will find it

Solve : Comp wont start..Goes to black screen.?

Answer»

Hi,

I have a Hp Pavilion dv9000 laptop
with Windows Vista.

when i TURN it on a message pops up saying

"C:\Windows\system32\POWRPROF.DLL is either not designed to run on windows or it contains an error. Try installing the program again using the original installation MEDIA or contact your system administrator or the software VENDOR for support."

It started doing this after it ran disk check because it was shutdown incorrectly.
then the message came up and when I hit OK it goes to a Black Screen and stays there.Do you have the original Windows Vista CD?No, I dont. I have a Partition on the computer.Do a restore from the recovery partition. Vista is still too NEW and has many problems not yet heard of let alone solved.

So TRUE!Have a look on the windows website for patches for windows vista and if none see if when they are going to come out. They would be hard to install considering he cannot log into Vista right now.

But if you get it working again, be sure to install all the updates it needs.

Solve : Vista's Defragmenter too simple?

Answer»

Hi all. I recently bought a notebook PC with Windows Vista Home Premium. I've removed some unwanted programs, ran Disk Cleanup, and, just today, ran Defragmenter. I found Vista's Defragmenter to be very simple. It has no Analyze option and provides no report when finished. It shows no INDICATION of progress during defragmentation, no PERCENTAGE-completed indicator. The only way you know that it's finished is that the button to start defragmentation changes to Cancel Defragmentation while it's defragmenting and then changes back to "Defragment now" when done.

Have any of you Vista users installed some other defragmenter? If so, what?
I just use the command prompt. You have more options but there STILL is no progress BAR or percentage complete. Here are some switches:
-c Defragments all drives
-a Analyses the drives and gives you a report
-r Only defragments files that are smaller than 64MB in size.
-w Defragments all files regardless of size.
-f FORCES Disk Defragmenter to defragment drives with less than 15% of hard drive space left.
-v Display a complete report.I believe DisKeeper Lite will run on Vista....it's a free version.
The only crippled feature is the scheduler. Thanks, Soviet Genius, for that info. I think I'll try using Windows defragmenter that way. I see that I the Command Prompt screen requires that it be run as administrator and that I can open it in that mode by right clicking on Command Prompt on the Programs menu and selecting "Run as administrator".

patio, I'll keep DisKeeper in mind. I might give it a try.

Solve : accessing files?

Answer»

Hi, I recently changed computers and wanted to connect my old hard drive to my new computer in order to copy over the data STORED on it. This is after the old computer crashed and refused to load windows; now I have successfuly conected the hard drive to the new computer, but while I can get ACCESS to all the file located on the hard drive, I cannot access any files located in the My Documents directry. I have tried to change the access rights to the files, but this has not helped. Also, the hard drive was passworded and as yet it has not asked me to enter a password to copy files from other directories.
So simply, is it possible for me to access these files?

The old computer was running windows xp service pack 2 while the new runs windows vista ultimate. I am listed as the administrater on both drives. (will post back later when I can get into the computer to list model SPECS for the hard drives, if needed)

Also, a side question; why is it that certian directories in vista prevent me, even though I am the ADMINISTRATOR, from accessing them? (things listed as hidden in the C drive mainly)Try This...

Solve : keyboard and mouse no longer function. Any advice??

Answer»

Hi. I just installed the software for a kensington wireless keyboard and mouse. I didn't have the instructions so installed it on my new Dell PC which uses Vista Home premium. I was prompted to restart the computer. When I did, the mouse and keyboard did not work. I unplugged the USB, and replugged the old mouse and keyboard. These no longer work. The computer boots normally, but without a mouse of keyboard, I cannot use the computer. I would like to remove the software, which I now see is not even needed to use the mouse and keyboard. I'm writing this on my old computer, with the new wireless mouse and keyboard. Any advice on how to use the computer now would be appreciated. I cannot even SHUT it down! Thanks.EGBDo you have a PS/2 Keyboard? You may need to reset the BIOS to
factory default.

The new keyboard and mouse are wireless. They connect via a small USB connector. The old keyboard and mouse are USB. The computer is a new Dell XPS 210. The old keyboard and mouse worked, but I needed them for the old computer. I am pretty certain it is a software problem - I shouldn't have installed the software, but thought it was necessary to use the mouse and keyboard. These two are VISTA compatible, but on the Kensington website, it says that some of the software is not compatible.

What exactly is a PS/2 keyboard?

What I don't know how to do is to reboot the computer without a keyboard or mouse...how exactly do you do this?
Thanks for any help you can give. I'm freaking out a bit about this..as you can imagine!
A PS/2 keyboard has a round connector like the picture in my last comment above.See reply#1.Maybe your new Dell don't have PS/2 capabilities.

I am thinking if your BIOS can't find the USB keyboard and you don't have USB keyboard capabilities.

You may have a jumper on your motherboard,or need to remove the CMOS
battery to get your BIOS reset to factory defaults.Try HereAre your usb ports working I just had the problem where they were not working at all they were not showing in device manager I had to go into my bios to turn them onThank you all for your advice. I found this advice on the Kensington website AFTER I installed the CV rom that came with the wireless mouse and keyboard. The question was : Should I install Mouseworks on Windows VISTA?
Reply:
"No, it is important to know that you should not install Mouseworks on any PC running Microsoft Windows Vista. Mouseworks was exclusively developed to run under Windows XP and earlier versions of Windows. With the release of Microsoft Vista there is no further need for the Mouseworks application as key features and functionality formerly provided by Mouseworks is incorporated into Vista. Vista supports programmability and configuration needs such as acceleration, application launch (keyboards), settings for right or left handed users, scroll speed, et cetera. Our plan is to continue to tap into the rich functionality, configuration, and programmability which Microsoft Vista incorporates. PLEASE do not install Mouseworks on any PC running Windows Vista. "

There is no further information on the Kensington website. I'm assuming this is the problem with my PC - because the keyboard and mouse stopped working after I turned the computer back on after installing the CD that came with the keyboard and mouse.

Now my question is: What is BIOS? How do I do this? Should I ask a professional to help?
Is it possible to start the computer in another mode, like safe mode, without a mouse or keyboard? If so, how does this work?
I didn't try any other devices in the USB drives. Now the computer is turned off - I'm in Sweden and it's almost 3 am, so I'll head to bed. I'm so discouraged about this!
Thanks for any other instructions you can give me to solve this problem.
EGB
This may get you out of this jam.
Borrow or buy a PS2 keyboard and mouse...they can be the cheapest you can find and you can keep them for emergencies.
Unplug the USB devices.
Plug in the PS2 keyboard and mouse.
Power up.
Tap F8 repeatedly as the machine is starting and before you see the Windows logo.
The screen will give you some choices...just choose safemode.
Go to Add/Remove programs and uninstall the Kensington software.

Re-boot without changing the keyboard or mouse.
Make sure everything works and then power down and try hooking up the Kensington devices and remove the PS2 ones.
Good Luck and let us know.Hello again. Still here - I checked everywhere and found 8 USB slots, but none of the round holes as I used to have on my desk top several years ago.

I suppose Dell doesn't make these any more. I have another slot in front called 1394, but have never seen anything like this before.

Does this mean I can use this computer again?

That's going to give me a horrible night's sleep, I'm afraid!

I"ll contact Kensington and Dell tomorrow when their help desks open.

Oh dear!
Anyway, thanks for taking the time to help.

EGB
PS I found a PS/2 keyboard and mouse in my computer drawer - the reason I bought the wireless one in the first place was because I realized these wouldn't work on the new computer! Feel like I'm running around in circles here... I looked up the specifications on your Dell and it don't have PS/2
plug ins,Dammitt them!

Have you unplugged the computer from the wall and replugged it,then
let it boot up with only the keyboard plugged in.The mouse is not important
at this moment. So,what you gonna do Bubba ?

Solve : Vista Media Center very laggy?

Answer»

Well last night i think i toasted the media center. I am running vista 32 bit ultimate my hardware is a 3500 athlon 64 1 gig of kingston hyper x ram 6800 gt oc haupagge (sp) 250 tv tuner

Basically i was getting a lot of artifacting on the screen with my old ati 9800 so i swapped it out with my 6800 gt oc. When I changed the video cards i had a BUNCH of problems with drivers. I USED a driver cleaner to remove all of the ATI junk got the newest nvidia drivers running in it. Set it up for the TV and was on my way. I tried to bring up media center and it blue screens but the computer is still running and i can hear media center starting up in the back of the blue screen. I hit power and put the computer to sleep and i bring it back up and then media center is running fine. So that was like a week ago it has been limping along doing that. Now a new problem

Now when I get the tv to work the video is very laggy the sound is fine. In task manager the media center process is bouncing from 60% to 100% of course it hits 100% goes laggy. I can't play recorded TV it has the same problem but when i play a DVD it is fine.

I have checked over the hardware a bunch of times and ran tests on everything its fine. I ran an ad-aware scan last night along with avast anti-virus scan on it.

Thanks in advance.any suggestions? I think i am going to just wipe it and RELOAD it but if anyone has anything crazy to try before i do it....what driver cleaner thers a certain one that is a infectionI don't remember to be HONEST but i did the virus scan and spyware scan after in had it installed and it was ok. So i am assuming that it's not the one that i have. This weekend i am going to a giant car show up in the twin cities but when i get back I will just wipe and reload it. I considered trying to remove media center and just reinstalling that because that is where the problem is coming from has anyone tried that? You'll probably get to install Vista again also.

Solve : [Fixed] BSOD's with DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL?

Answer»

I really need help with this, I've spent all last night, and some of today (I've been sick) trying to fix his PC with no luck, and he's really behind on work now, and he depends on this computer to use for his work.

I have to use my dad's computer, which he uses for work, because My computer died and we don't have the money to fix it, and I wanted to overclock it, which I REALLY shouldn't have since my dad depends on using it for work. Anyways, I ran nTune's "Fine Tuning" option, for 3 hours, but wasn't happy with the memory timings because the RAM supports 4 #CAS Latency, with 4-4-4-12 timings, and nTune decides to back everything down that it has tuned, when the computer crashes/restarts, so when it was too high FSB clocks that caused it to crash, it would lower everything else it had tuned. In the END nTune put the timings at 5-6-5-18, so I went back into the BIOS and on accident, I set it to 3 CAS latency, with 4-4-4-12 timings.

This is where it wouldn't boot up, because I set them too low, so I had to reset the CMOS with the jumper on the motherboard. It booted up fine, and I set the BIOS back how I had them, but when I tried to boot into windows I got an error about ntoskrnl.exe is corrupt or missing, and when I tried to boot into Vista (Dual Boot) and got a similar problem, but with hal.dll or something, so I spent probably an hour trying to figure out what caused it, and it turns out a simple BIOS reset fixed it. Once I reset the BIOS, I tried to boot into windows XP, which worked fine, then when I tried to log into my account I got some error about lsass.exe failed, and the computer would restart in 1 minute. When the timer got down to 53 seconds, the screen went white and the PC froze. I restarted the PC, logged into windows XP again, but Google Talk gave me an error about the certificate was invalid, something like that, and that the clock/date was the problem, when I go to click OK, I get a BSOD that only flashed for a fraction of a second, too fast to see what it said.

This is where my main problem is. After Google Talk gave me that error about the clock/date being invalid, I remembered I forgot to set the dates in the CMOS after I reset the CMOS. Once I did that, logged into windows again and it logged into Google Talk fine, so I thought My problem was gone, but before even a minute of being logged in, I got another BSOD, this time I managed to read the top before it reset. IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL was the problem, but I didn't manage to get any other information. After trying to log into windows XP about 5-7 times, I decided to try to boot into vista. Vista boots fine, completely stable, no problems at all. This is what confuses me, what can cause the BSOD's in XP, just by changing the BIOS RAM timings/etc, but have no effect on vista at all, or what can changing the BIOS even cause anything in the OS to change. Anyways, I was trying to do anything to fix it, like chkdsk, etc. After all night of probably 6-7 hours of working on it, I decided to try and do a repair install of Windows XP, which goes fine but, while I leave for a minute after it finishes installing, and is booting into windows, when I get back I see the BSOD again, this time it didn't restart, and I managed to write it down.

DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

STOP: 0X000000D1 (0XB9E5BDE6, 0X00000002, 0X00000008, 0XB9E5BDE6)

*** ftdisk.sys - Address B9E5BDE6 base at B9E57000, DateStamp 367d8419 ***

I restarted my PC after the BSOD, and windows booted up, I tried to login to my account, which told me the hardware changed significantly, so I need to reactivate it within 3 days, but it just stopped loading after showing my Background. I do Windows Key & L to log out, to try and log into my dad's account. It loads fine, but soon BSOD's again. I restarted again, logged into my account, which BSOD'ed again within 2 minutes of being logged in, but the next time I try to boot into windows, it gives me the same prompt about needing to activate windows, BUT it doesn't say 3 days to activate it, it says I have to activate it right now. I click OK, and it just stops loading only showing the background, before I get that same BSOD again.

I desperately need help, because this is my dad's PC which he uses daily for his work, and I never should have messed with it overclocking. Finally, here's the PC specs.

CPU: AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+ Windsor 2.0GHz Socket AM2 Processor Model ADA3800CUBOX
Motherboard: ECS KN3 SLI2 (1.0) Socket AM2 NVIDIA nForce 590 SLI MCP ATX AMD Motherboard
RAM: Corsair XMS2 2GB (2 x 1GB) DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual CHANNEL Memory Model TWIN2X2048-6400C4
Video Card: EVGA 256-P2-N761-AR GeForce 8600GTS 256MB GDDR3 PCI-E x16 HDCP Video Card
PSU: Sunbeam NUUO SUNNU550-US-BK ATX12V / EPS12V 550W Power Supply
Windows VERSION: Windows XP Home Edition SP2 Build.2600 (Not sure what build after repair install, I didn't get to apply updates, but the XP disc is SP2)

Thank's for taking the time to read all of this, and I hope someone can help me quick because this is the computer my dad depends on for his work, daily.

EDIT:
From what I've looked up on my problem, it can be caused by bad RAM, and I WAS changing RAM settings so this MAY be the problem, but I doubt that it is, because Vista runs fine, and I ran the Windows Memory Diagnostics test multiple times with no problems. I'll try running MemTestx86

Update:
I'm going to put in a different harddrive, and install Windows XP, and see if that runs stable, to rule out a hardware problem, after MemTest runs for a while.

Update #2:
MemTest86 is on it's second pass with no errors so far, so I'm not sure what's causing the problem. I really need to get this fixed soon, my dad is so far behind on his work from the PC not working.

Update #3:
FINALLY some GOOD news! When I try to boot into windows normally, it runs SLOW, and after I login to an account it tells me to activate windows, so I click yes and it looks like it's going to load but then just stops. Cursor, and desktop background, nothing else. After 1-2 minutes or more, it finally opens the "Activate Windows thing" and then eventually crashes with BSOD. This happens even in Safe Mode. I decided to go boot into Safe mode with Command Prompt, and that loaded fine, so I opened explorer.exe and it didn't crash! Now I can actually access stuff on the computer. I'm 90% sure the BSOD is a driver problem, so I'm going to uninstall the drivers to everything, and work from there. I'll report back more news soon.

Update #4:
Another BSOD trying to log into windows normally, but this one is different.

DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

*** STOP: 0x000000D1 (0x7F000004, 0X00000002, 0X00000000, 0XB963512A)

*** USBPORT.SYS - Address B963512A base at B962C000, DateStamp 41107d62

Hopefully I can get some help googling that new BSOD error.

Update #5:
Well, I went into Safe-Mode with Command Prompt, went into msconfig, and disabled everything in startup/serviced, and only booted the absolute minimum. Fixed the BSOD, but now I have to troubleshoot what caused it.

Update #6:
As soon as I tried to install the Nvidia Ethernet/IDE/SMBus drivers, I got another IRQL BSOD.

Update #7:
The last BSOD seemed to be completely random, I've had no BSODs yet so far after that, although I did get some error about nvata.sys being missing/corrupt, but that's completely unrelated, it was something that went wrong re-installing nForce stuff. HOPEFULLY the problem is solved, but it's still a bit too early to tell.

I finally fixed the problem, I just went into Safe-Mode, went into msconfig, and disabled everything on startup/services, and booted with only the absolute minimum. Then I went and re-enabled only what I needed, and it's working now.Reset the BIOS back to default values...and leave the RAM timings alone for now.
I've already tried that, I posted that I did that in the original post.

Solve : Vista reboots on shutdown?

Answer»

Hello. My computer is a new HP M8000N which CAME with Vista. It has 3G RAM. For about the last week, it will not shutdown unless I hold the off button. I haven't used this computer much, as I want to transfer some programs first. I have no external peripherals hooked up. I've only installed 2 programs, and it worked fine AFTER I installed them both for a time. I've tried safe mode, but it makes no difference. HP hasn't responded to my requests for help, and I can find nothing on the MSFT site. It came with Norton, and I've completely uninstalled and reinstalled. I've also tried 2 different restore points that were made at a time it shut down properly with no luck. I've also changed it to no reboot after an error, and no wakeup through the network card, but that doesn't work either. This is really frustrating. Does anyone have any ideas as to what might be causing this? I've surprised there is almost no information on this problem on the net. I've googled with no luck - I've even read most of the XP posts on this problem.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

PhilHi,
I had similar problem I guess. I use same notebook with Vista. I did some chanddges on setting ACCORDING to instruction given in the page of following link.
It might work for you......

http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/change-the-windows-vista-power-buttons-to-shut-down/

Good Luck! Thanks for RESPONDING. As you can see, there haven't been many!

Mine is a desktop, and I have played with the power settings with no luck. However, it has since started to work okay. I changed NOTHING to MAKE this happen. The only changes to the computer were whatever updates Norton DOWNLOADED PLUS the MSFT Vista updates. Since I previously completely removed Norton using their removal program, I'm betting it was a Vista update that fixed it. Still, I don't understand why there was nothing on the MSFT site for Vista. (At least when I checked.) Maybe this is MSFT's usual ignoring, or denial, of real problems that others find.

Thanks again for responding.

Solve : XP/Vista Partition Problems?

Answer»

First of all thank you for helping me out. I have a special problem, and one that needs addressing ASAP.

I installed Windows Vista Home Premium and then partitioned my hard drive using the DISK Manager in Vista. I gave that second partition 50 GB of SPACE, enough for the XP-64 bit OS and whatever programs that would not run on Vista. The problem is that once I installed and went into XP, the Vista OS was no longer available in the boot LIST. The boot list LOOKS like this:

Windows XP 64-bit
Windows XP 64-bit

I don't know why it lists XP twice, and am unsure if it has much to do with my problem. However, it is very odd. At this point I don't even care about the XP partition any longer, as it was my secondary/compatibility OS to begin with. Vista is my main OS and I would appreciate any input into my predicament. Thanks! In general, I think you have to install the older OS first. This was true if you WANTED to dual boot e.g. Win98 & XP, so maybe you'll have to remove Vista and reinstall it, or maybe start over.
Yeah thats right xp comes first then vista !

Solve : Vista BSOD?

Answer»

ok so i bought a new comp with Windows Vista recently. It have been running good for 2 days! Now everytime I want to shut down or start up it takes btw 7-15mins to shutdown and 3-10mins to Start up.

Also.. every time I shut down the comp I get a Blue Screen of Death Error after a long time (7-15mins)

I disabled Aero, reduced the NUMBER of startup programs and it still slloooowwwww.. Even THOUGH I have 2 GB Ram.

What Should I do? Any advices to get rid of this Blue Screen Error!?

Thanks in Advance. Two days?
Do you have anything important installed? I recommend reinstalling it. Your Manufacturer might have put a bunch of preloaded junk on your computer. Or an error might have occurred while they were restoring their default image to your computer.

And have you been online? If so, do you have Antivirus? It worked great for 2 days.. I bought the comp 1 week ago.

I have ZoneAlarm Security Suite installed as Anti-Virus and Anti-Spyware.

Important install.. PhotoShop, BattleField 2 and Medal of Honor.

I don't have the Vista CDs though. It was pre-installed.. But theres a backup disk that I could maybe use to start back from crapTry using the disk that came with the computer. Put it in, and restart your computer. See if there is an option that will not FORMAT your disk, but that will reinstall the operating system. This may result in registry data loss. Your saved games should still exist, but you may need to reinstall your games after this.
Beware: Some Windows settings may be LOST, but your files should stay INTACT. I would be taking that back and taking advantage of the warranty....i'd also request a Vista CD as well.

Solve : please wait while windows configures microsoft office enterprise 2007 problem.?

Answer»

this is what i get, everytime i start microsoft word or powerpoint any app of microsoft i get this it pisses me off. this is the error i get
please wait while windows configures microsoft office ENTERPRISE 2007

and it takes about 6 mins to launch the app and it does this everytime i launch it.. A common problem - here's Chris Pirillo on it:

"Poor Big John Midland. Every time he launches a Microsoft Office application the Windows Installer box COMES up. Uninstalling and re-installing hasn’t helped the issue. Luckily, I have a very good idea what the problem is.

Most likely, a third party extension is causing this trouble. I asked John what version of Windows and Office he runs. He’s using Vista and Office 07. Both are still relatively new programs, and still have some bugs in them. He doesn’t recall installing anything new that would hook into Office. But that is probably the trouble here. I advised John to go through Microsoft Word and Outlook both to check active addins. Disable them ONE by one, and SEE if any of them fixes the problem. If not, then he needs to go through his programs, and uninstall or disable (one at a time again) any programs… such as Adobe Acrobat Professional… which tie into Office. I’d bet the farm that he will track down the problem through this method of madness."

And here is a MS kb.

Put the message into Google for plenty more users with the problem. Looks like a bugfix from MS is required.

Good luck

I looked at Chris Pirillo already and i disabled and enabled some of the addons and it doesnt work. I unistalled and reinstalled adobe acrobat and their software, and also office 07 and it doesnt work. and i still get the message.Does your OS support the Enterprise Edition ? ?yep it does, well how come i installed it on my sisters laptop, its a Gateway Home Premium Edition
i have the same vista os. it works on hers and it doesnt on me? something is haywire..I couldn not find the problem, i guess it is some addon that is causing this, after installd adobe acrobat pro, i deleted vista, and thank god i installed windows xp pro. it works great some driver issues but i got them all working now. Thanks for trying the help. no problem like that in xp

Solve : Programs & USB Drives from XP?

Answer»

I have a USB Thumb Drive which has ".exe" firmware on it, I'm trying to use it with Vista. You run the application on it to ACCESS the things you have stored on it. when I double click it to go into it like I used to on XP it just MAKES a sound and won't start.

Anyone have any ideas?

I'm guessing it's just because it's not compatible with Vista. You could be right there....

Give me the make of the thumb drive as well as the storage on it and any serials if any on the usb drive i will look into it .....to see if it is compatible with vista , you never know with that OS......

Tony

Sorry, i fell asleep - just woke up. It's a 512MB JumpDrive Secure II.

http://store.lexar.com/?category=23&subcategory=39&productid=JDSE512-431

follow the link. The page you will see shows the ONE i have, it says works with windows vista. But i bought it like 2 years ago and obviously then it wasn't made to work with vista.

So you think it's just not compatible? and many ".exe" programs i've made years ago in Visual Basic (programming) don't work either?Ok i will try and give you a helping hand on this.... but i need to ask a favor can you teach me how to use visual basic......not today im so tired but maybe sometime soon , ive always wanted to know....

Tony I'd love to teach you but I made those programs last year and I decided to stop programming in Visual Basic because I wanted to start at a more complicated level. So I can't remember how to even make the programs I made, lol. Sorry. But if i did know i would help you learn.Oh ok no worry s ....... im not 100% SURE on what to suggest to you here , i don't know why its not reading , because it should be.......

Wait for patio , or one of the other hardware EXPERTS .... im really confused to be honest.....

Sorry i couldn't of any help

Solve : dwm.exe?

Answer»

K, I accidentaly deleted this PROCESS, instead of BF 2142. I can't re-run it, the error says that there is no dwm.exe in my files. Now, I can't watch movies, windows PLAYER loads and I hear sound, but I can't SEE the video.

I am running Vista Home Premium 32-bit.
try system restore. I'm not sure how to do it on vista but google it.I had to system restore in safe mode. But, I am good to GO now. Plus, I got rid of the background crap in vista.

Solve : Vista and internet connection?

Answer»

Hi all,
We just had to buy a new pc because our OLD one died. The new Dell with vista premium on it. We have DSL high speed internet. Vista automticly recognized it and logged us in without having to EVEN put in our user name and password. But now were finding that the connection drops after about 10 min of non use.
So we have to disconnect the modem and reconnect it.
Is there a setting or something that I can do to keep the connection from timing out?

Thanks
Mark Some questions need to be answered first:

1. How are you connected to the internet? wirelessly or through a DSL modem or a LAN CABLE connected to a router...?

2. Did your internet connection require a username and password on the old laptop?

3. When you do connect to the internet USING this new laptop, does the internet work fine and open any webpage you visit or does it show an error?

4. Have you spoken to your ISP about this problem?Double check to make sure ALL the phone outlets have a DSL line filter hooked up to them...if this doesn't help have the ISP run a line test. They can normally do this over the phone.Actually...

Vista's Task Manager has CERTAIN triggers that are performed if the system goes into Sleep Mode, or Hibernation. One of these would be to go into "idle disconnect" if it is configured to do this at either of the above modes.

Unfortunately, I use XP Home, so I'm not able to direct you to the proper settings. However, I'd check your settings, first, before monkeying with anything else.

Solve : Always Restarts after "Shut Down" or "Hibernate", Won't come out of "Sleep"?

Answer»

Hardware: Toshiba Satellite P105-S6177
System: Vista Home Premium
Memory: 2GB RAM, 120GB Drive
Processor: Centrino Duo 1.73GHz
Chip Set: Intel 945GM Express

Further Explanation:
User Choice:System Action
SHUT DownReboot
HibernateReboot
SleepSleeps... but won't come out of Sleep

Further Explanation and Attempts:
Using the Toshiba POWER Management feature does change choices of action but the outcome is the same as choices from Vista menu. For instance, if I choose to have the system Hibernate when the lid is closed, the system goes into hibernation momentarily then restarts, or if I press the power button, the system shuts down then immediately restarts.

I can use the command line: “rundll32.exe powrprof.dll,SetSuspendState” and the system will go into hibernation but then immediately restarts.

The only way to turn-off this computer is to hold the power button for 5 seconds or more and then when powering-up again, I get the nasty Microsoft warning that the system didn't shut down properly last time and do I want to start in safe mode or normal, etc, etc with all it's slow checks with this type of startup.

The Sordid Story:
I just purchased this Toshiba Satellite P105-S6177 from RefurbDepot. I know, that's my first problem. Secondly, they did not include a manual or RECOVERY disks. When calling Toshiba Support, they seem quite aware of this problem in their support database and require me to perform a full system reload from their OEM Recovery Disk... which I don't have.

Attempting to return this faulty system to Refurb”Despot”... (those lovely people), they want me to sign a form saying that I agree to pay a 15% restocking fee before they will issue me an RMA, REGARDLESS THAT THEY SHIPPED ME A FAULTY SYSTEM OR THAT THEY DIDN'T INCLUDE ALL NECESSARY PARTS, which they now claim they do not include recovery disks with their computers, which is not indicated when purchasing from them... basically, if you buy from RefurbDepot... you're SOL if it's doesn't work out of the box or down the road! How would you like to purchase a slightly used car from a dealer, then have the dealer start the car for you and somehow remove the keys and keep them so you can't turn it off?

Now, I BELIEVE that I can fiddle with bits in the registry but in a few hours of searching for any key for “ShutDown” etc, I haven't found the silver bullet. I've searched the MS Knowledge Database and Toshiba Database and nothing reports a problem like mine. Toshiba points to a program by Symantec that may cause a restart after shutdown and solves it by changing bits in the registry but I don't have that program so those entries are not in my registry.

I refuse to pay Refurb”Despot” almost $200 to return a faulty system or to purchase a new copy of Vista just to solve my problem... Any help out there would be greatly APPRECIATED... and please tell the world no product is worth any price at RefurbDepot!

Solve : NTLDR, different from what I've seen in here?

Answer»

ok, thx.

i'll boot my compy and try that. is it possible that boot.ini was just deleted? i don't know how the computer would start without it tho...It won't...ha, ok, thx deerpark. looks like things r WORKING again, and my msconfig has boot.ini in it now...

we'll see if that does it (it looks like it will)

the last TIME i ran the NTLDR fix, it worked once, then i restarted to check it and it worked again, so i assumed it worked, but the time after that when i started it it gave me it again

looks like no boot.ini startup error message, and i restarted 3x to check things, using restart and shut-down start-up and it looks good. we'll see about my bad luck, but thanks to all the guys who took the time to HELP and look at the thread!

Solve : Lost CD/DVD ROM drive?

Answer»

My system crashed when I rebooted I discovered that I had lost my DVD/CD-ROM drive. Device manager showed yellow exclamation points saying there was a problem with my primary and secondary IDE Controller (FIFO)
It was suggested that I should remove the PCI IDE controller then let windows reinstall it. I did it did but I still have the yellow exclamation points and the same message. I checked the BIOS it sees it, DOS sees it however Windows does not
What do I do?
The system is:
Windows 98SE 4.10.2222a
Intel DG845GVSR MB with Intel Celeron 2g chip
Custom-built machine two hd 1 WD 20G 1 MAXTOR 80G
Regularly run Adaware,Sbot S&D have AVG 7.5 anti virus
I have a Original WINDOWS 98SE CD
Re-install your motherboard drivers.Minor problem. The drivers are on a CD-ROM. and I don't have a CD-ROM driveTravel to bootdisk.com and DLoad a Win98SE bootdisk...get the one with CD_Rom support .
Extract it to a clean floppy and boot up with the floppy in.
After start at the A: prompt type D: and hit Enter ...you should now have a working CDRom.
Type dir /p and hit Enter...this will show the contents of the CD. Look for setup.exe...if its there type setup and hit Enter...the install should now run.1) don' t need to down load one got one
2) when you say at "A" prompt type "D" I assume you want me to CHANGE directory to "D" ? If so I my case it's E cause I have 2 hdYes that's what i meant...2 HDD's weren't mentioned which is why we always say lots of info is never too much.
E: and Enter should get you there...have the driver CD in.OK...will do sorry I forgot to mention that.....will let you know resultsHere is a update. The CD-ROM that came with the board is APPARENTLY for windows,as there is no setup.exec on but you have a autorun.
but the somewhat good news is I went to INTEL's website and I think I found the correct file here is the file name for the readme. Could you look and tell me if this is the right one?
http://downloadmirror.intel.com/4841/ENG/readme.txtIf that driver matches your MBoard model that is the one you need.If that does not work try this

Missing DVD CD DRIVES in xp an vista
have a look at

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060

or this

a software patch from here can solve the problem sometimes, it was aimed at windows XP, but the problem is still there in Vista unfortunately
go to this WEB page

http://www.dougknox.com/xp/scripts_desc/xp_cd_dvd_fix.htm

and Download

XP_CD-DVD-Fix.zip

and save this file to your hard drive. NAVIGATE to where you saved it and double click the file to extract the contents. Locate the EXE file you extracted and double click it. A confirmation dialog will appear when the script is done. You may need to reboot for the change to take effect.

This utility is only intended for Windows XP. You may need Administrator level access to use this utility. If you do not have Administrator level access, the program will say it is finished, but will not have made any changes.

this is another way you have to open regedit and change this key
click start, then enter regedit

first back up the entire registry.

then look for this key

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

I am sorry but if the key is not there you will have to create it, then you will see the drive again,

Apparently it seems that this is an age old fix for even XP systems. If you venture to the registry key above by doing the following steps:

Click on the start menu.

If this is a Vista machine in the search box type in “regedit” without the quotation marks.

Maximize the HKLM and then go ahead and browse until you reach the key listed above.

In the right panel you’ll see something along the lines of “UpperFilter” and “LowerFilter” you want to click on each “filter” key and hit delete. Click yes when it asks to confirm if you wish to delete the key.

Restart Windows.

http://www.dougknox.com/xp/scripts_desc/xp_cd_dvd_fix.htm

Restore CD/DVD Drives to Explorer

XP_CD-DVD-Fix.zip

Usage: Download XP_CD-DVD-Fix.zip and save this file to your hard drive. Navigate to where you saved it and double click the file to extract the contents. Locate the EXE file you extracted and double click it. A confirmation dialog will appear when the script is done. You may need to reboot for the change to take effect.

Based on CDGONE.REG

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

Apparently it seems that this is an age old fix for even XP systems. If you venture to the registry key above by doing the following steps:

6. Let me know if this works.

any help or advice is appreciated.. thanksI don't really see anything too bad in your log. Just these...
O2 - BHO: Big Fish Games Toolbar - {4E7BD74F-2B8D-469E-86BD-FD60BB9AAE3A} - C:\PROGRA~1\BFGTOO~1\BFGTOO~1.DLL (file missing)

O3 - Toolbar: Big Fish Games Toolbar - {4E7BD74F-2B8D-469E-86BD-FD60BB9AAE3A} - C:\PROGRA~1\BFGTOO~1\BFGTOO~1.DLL (file missing)

Mark those, close all windows (except for HijackThis) and click on Fix Checked. In Safe Mode, use Add/Remove Programs to remove Bigfish Toolbar (if present) and if still there, delete C:\Program Files\BFGTOOLBAR.

Also, you should update your Java.

You also need firewall. You're vulnerable without a firewall, so you should look into getting either ZoneAlarm, Kerio Personal Firewall, or Comodo. They're all good free firewalls. Just be sure you only have one installed at a time!

Do you RECOGNIZE these?
O24 - Desktop Component 0: (no name) - E:\My Documents\ScreenShots\shot(02-23-07)10;09;38.jpg
O24 - Desktop Component 1: (no name) - E:\My Documents\ScreenShots\shot(02-23-07)10;09;36.jpgI use ZoneAlarm.
Do you have Anti-Virus? AVG is free and WORKS well (in one case better than Norton 2006).I have Bit Defender which has a firewall. Also I can not enter safe mode. THe command is F8 but there is no longer a response... And I don't reconize the jpgs since I keep my desktop clear..of most stuff anywaysIf you don't recognize those items, then you should right-click on your desktop and go to Properties. Click on the Desktop tab and click on the Customize Desktop button. From there, click on the Web tab. Delete any items and click on OK.

Then, open HijackThis, mark those two O24 entries, and click on Fix Checked. If you don't recongize the E:\My Documents\ScreenShots folder, then you may want to delete it.

Download ComboFix and save it to your desktop. Run the program and read its disclaimer (it's fairly short) and make sure you really pay attention to what it says. Follow the prompts and when finished, it will produce a log at C:\ComboFix.txt. Go ahead and post that here. Note: Don't click on the window while it's running; this may cause stalls. This will help give a better idea of what may be on your computer, and it might also help determine why you can't get into Safe Mode.

As for the Bigfish Toolbar...if it's still present, try removing it in Normal Mode. Here you go.

Solve : Ethernet Controller problem in XP Pro installed in ACER Aspire desktop?

Answer»

I installed Windows XP Pro SP2 in an brand new ACER Aspire T180 (desktop) which came to me with Vista Home installed. I downloaded and installed all drivers sugested by Acer for this case, and EVERYTHING works fine but the Ethernet Controller. So I have no Internet at all.

Windows, which says this controller is installed but not working properly, cannot repair it, cannot find a solutions in the XP Pro CD, and suggests I look for it in Internet. Great!

Whenever I try to resintall the LAN Driver where ths Ethernet driver is (gSetXP.exe) I got the message "Setup 48 v1.8.41116 -- Driver KKinstalled, please reboot!", and the OK option below. I assume that if I hit on that 'OK' my PC will restart. But no, when I hit NOTHING happens.

I found in this link (translated version)

http://translate.google.com/translate?hl=en&sl=fr&u=http://forum.telecharger.01net.com/ordinateurindividuel/materiels_achat_configuration_pannes/autres_peripheriques/controleur_ethenet__pour_acer_t180_ne_fonctionne_pas-1990/messages-1.html&sa=X&oi=translate&resnum=1&ct=result&prev=/search%3Fq%3Dacer%2Bpronet%2Bgbe%26hl%3Den%26sa%3DG

the complete description of my PROBLEM and a possible solutions that doesn't work in my case. The forum this links becomes to is in French, a language i don't speak, so I cannot submit my problem there.

Can anybody help?

I would travel to Acer's site and grab an XP specific driver for that controller.

Make sure to uninstall the Vista one first. Thanks, Patio. I already did that. Found the specific module for Ethernet only, downloadaed and isntalled but the results was the same.

Regarding Vista, I format the entire disk before installing XP Pro.To prevent further frustration i would just buy a new NIC card and install it's drivers...

They're pretty reasonable.Yes, it LOOKS reasonable. Thanks.

Solve : Installing Windows vista/wanting to remove old recovery partition?

Answer»

I just INSTALLED Windows Vista on my HP computer. This particular computer came with a partitioned D drive on top of the C drive, which contained essentially everything needed to re-format.

The problem is, I reformated with Vista to get rid of all the junk that came with my computer rather than just updating with it. And last time I recovered using the partiction, it did in fact put the same junk on it that came with it.

I originally wanted to install vista on to the D drive, but it wouldn't let me.

I want to get rid of the partitioned drive and all the remenants of the old OS it was running on.

Is this safe, and if so, how can I do it?If you reformatted properly all the old junk would be gone no matter if there is a recovery partition or not. On most machines the OS never sees this partition anyways...
There's nothing wrong with formatting the recovery partition but you may want to be certain you have a Vista CD in case anything gets wonked down the roadQuote from: patio on August 27, 2007, 02:27:43 PM

patio, I believe he's means using the Recovery partition for format and reinstall all the original software. That's how it would work, right? So, indeed, if the computer came with Norton Internet Security SUITE, HP Games, Vongo, RealPlayer, etc., etc., all that would get reinstalled by using the Recovery partition, unless it's gives him the option to only install Windows, and APPARENTLY he did not see such an option when he previously used the procedure.

iamasupermidget, doesn't the computer have an item on the Programs menu called Recovery Manager or something similar? I bought a Compaq Notebook PC about a MONTH ago and it has that, and the purpose of it is to initiate the recovery/restore procedure.

You do want the ability to format and reinstall your OS if necessary, right? So, you either need to keep that Recovery partition as it is, or create, i.e. burn, recovery disks from it, or call HP and request they send a disk. I believe a small fee is normally required for this.

If you create recovery disks or get them from HP, then you can safely format D and use it for other purposes.

With my Compaq Notebook, Recovery Manager has an option to remove the Recovery partition. It's under Advanced options of the Recovery Manager.
Well i'm STILL confused because he stated the following:
I just installed Vista...
I re-formatted with Vista...
And in the 2nd last sentence he mentions an old OS...
That's what i was going on but until he clears things up we may never know.

Solve : Out Of Range Error?

Answer»

Hey,

On My Desktop, Everytime i turn it on i get an 'OUT OF RANGE' message. It happened when i changed my screen resolution and best i can guess is that my monitor does not support that resolution. Usually when you set a resolution it would say would you like to keep these settings (REVERTING in 12 seconds) but i couldnt see wot i was doing (cause of the box with the ERROR) so i just pressed right and enter, and obviously shouldn't have. Is there anyway to fix this .. quickly? i tried safe mode, and still GOT the error. My computer starts up OK, and it is working, cause the STARTUP sound plays but after it loads windows, the error comes up, and then i hear the startup sound.

If anyone knows a way to help, please let me know asap

My O/S is microsoft XP

also, try and be as simple as possible, i'm kinda dumb with computers lol.surprised it happens in safe mode, which should default to 800x600 @ 60 Hz. Do you see the bios screen etc at startup?

This happened to me on vista, i pressed ESC and it went back to the last known good config, I also changed my monitor with a better one which could handle the other resolution's.I agree with contrex...are you sure it is entering safemode ? ?
Re-boot and repeatedly tapF8 before you see the Windows logo...
Choose option #1 Safe mode and then you should be able to change the resolution back to what it was.

Solve : remove vista trial and install mce?

Answer»

my son crashed his MACHINE that had XP home on it, he then had a trial or eval disk for vista premium and loaded it. There was an auto disable on vista and it eventually died. He bought a copy of MCE 2005 and when he tried to install mce it wouldn't let him since there was a newer os installed. He then tried to reformat the HDD to start over with the mce but has not been able to accomplish that. he has two hdd but has tried to disable MAIN drive and boot to drive 2 but still no luck. I'm in California and he's in Colorado so I'm at a loss as to what to tell him. He does not have access to any on line machines so I have been advising him via phone. Anyone with a thought about how he can dump everything and install the new os?To eliminate confusion have him choose which drive he wants to use for MCE and hook it up as the master drive, he can unhook the other temporarily.
He should travel to bootdisk.com and grab a WinME bootdisk
The file just needs to be unzipped to a clean floppy.
Then PUT the floppy in and re-boot.
Type in format C: /U and hit Enter.
When it is finished it will ask for a volume LABEL have him hit Enter for none.
Remove the floppy and put in the MCE CD.
Re-boot and the Windows setup should start.sounds good but he doesn't have access online. he called geek squad and they want $200 to load it for himUnbelieveable...can he have someone DLoad it for him and make a boot floppy ? ?
Another option would be to pull the HDD and format it in another machine...

I have Vista INSTALLED. When I first turn it on, it flickers. I have had to PUT it into sleep mode for a minute and then bring it out. When I do that it comes back and it doesn’t flicker. Lately I have been having trouble getting it out of sleep mode. Now when I turn on the computer the power light comes on and the hard disk works but I GET nothing on my screen. The keyboard does not light up and my mouse does not light up.

Ive pushed the power button like you're suppose to. I’ve turned it off and waited and then turned it on several times and it still doesn’t work. I have unplugged it from the back and waited and then plugged it back in and it still doesn’t work.

Just an idea, BIOS power settings or something? I have an S1+S3 setting or something and I think that is sleep related?

Wait for an expert! Thanks for the help.
part of the problem is that I have no signal to my monitor. therefore I can't work with the bios.

Graig :>)Sometimes Windows will not respond to mouse or power button movement while in sleep mode

Or, when you move the mouse, the computer starts, but the monitor stays off, as is happening in your issue

Try pressing a key that will not do anything on your keyboard, like the Up-Arrow key, or ALT or CTRL

Also, what ANTIVIRUS protection do you have?

To me that definitely sounds BIOS / MB related, especially seeing as you have power cycled the system. As a last resort, if your problem is not resolved you could always try clearing the CMOS by removing it's battery. Though unfortunately, I don't really know if that will do anything.Hi Rant,

Solve : Is my hardware Vista Compatible??

Answer»

hello.
I am getting a custom computer soon. these are the specs for this computer:
(ATTACHED)

is this computer Windows Vista: HOME PREMIUM COMPATIBLE?
if so, how well will it run?...i was planning on doing the upgrade advisor but if you guys would know it would be easier than waiting

[Saving disk space - old attachment deleted by admin]My guess is it will run fine on that hardware but why not go ahead and run Windows Vista Upgrade Advisor?

What power supply will you be getting with that case?IM not sure..on the website im getting the case from it doesn't say..how many watts should the power supply be?It would be compatible you wouldn't want to go with anything less then a 450 watt power supply.alright..thanks

also, does ANYONE know how much i would be able to OVERCLOCK this CPU without having to buy new hardware to prevent overheating and such?Yeah, the hardware should be fine, it's the software that you should worry about. I installed Vista on my laptop once and hated it. Nothing I had was compatible with it. But maybe you won't have that problem. If you use a power supply calculator such as http://www.extreme.outervision.com/psucalculatorlite.jsp to calculate the power required for your system, I believe it's not going to be more than 300Watt. So, I see no need for a 450Watt power supply. But, I certainly wouldn't go with less than 350W.

My question about the power supply was more oriented toward quality, not the power rating. A cheap 450W PSU may be less dependable than a good quality 350 or 400 W PSU. Quote from: TehGerg on June 29, 2007, 08:26:35 AM

It would be compatible you wouldn't want to go with anything less then a 450 watt power supply.
Sure, it's compatible. But, he asked, "how well will it run?" That's why I suggested going ahead and running the upgrade adviser. Why not get some quantitative indicator?you might hit 3.5 ghz on it I wouldn't try much more the 3.2's are nearly topped out at clock speed for the core.thanks guys...TehGerg...can u give me somewhere where i can learn to overclock it..and your sure it won't make my system overheat or destroy my hardware at 3.5 GHZ?you can check out hardocp.com extremeoverclocking.com they are both full of overclocking tips and tricks

As for your power supply i say a 450 watt power supply because if you buy a cheaper power supply it will be rated at 450 watts even though at normal operating temps after it has been running for a while the wattage actaully drops down as it warms up. So if the power supply is rated at 450 watts at 65 degrees and then it is running at 120 degrees it will be running at well under 450 watts. If you want to run a system like this on a 350 watt power supply then buy an enermax or something reputable. If you have a cheap 350 watt power supply running at normal operating temperature and then add another hard drive or cd-rom drive you will be pushing it. If you want to overclock also you need strong voltage rails on it because if they droop then your computer WILL blue screen and restart.

Would you like any more reasoning for going with a better power supply over a cheap 300 watt?this is the case i'm getting with my computer:
http://www.cuttingedgecomputers.ca/shopexd.asp?id=1620

i think it says 450W...is that good for overclocking to 3.5?I would shop for a decent branded PSU and take the PSU out of that case and keep it for a spare...

Here is a good place to start reading up on them.

Since you are getting a decent deal on a new machine make a wise investment in powering and protecting the components with a quality PSU.

To me it's worth it...

Solve : Random bluescreens/crashes?

Answer»

This is the priority I put in the BIOS.

1: CD ROM
2: Removable
3: HDD
4: None

When I boot from the CD, all it does is show a black SCREEN with a blinking underscore in the TOP left corner of the screen, and then it just skips to windows. You need to burn the iso as an image. In Nero 7 it's called "Burn image to disk". If you can't find the OPTION, tell me the name of the burner software and I'll try to find out.I'm using "Roxio easy CD & DVD", and it doesnt work for *censored*.OKAY I found this on another forum.. it may work.
Right click the iso file and select 'open with', find 'Disc copy' in the new window and press ok. That should allow you to burn the iso.

If that doesn't work I suggest you download ImgBurn instead, its free and easy to use.
Just install it, right click the iso file and select 'Burn using ImgBurn'. In the new window that pops up press the button in the bottom left corner.
*censored*, how long does that thing run for?

Anyway, its been running for about two hours and a half now, and it got over 120 errors.

Does that mean my memory is good for scrap?MemTest is a loop test...it runs TIL you turn it off.
Any errors mean the RAM needs replaced.
Test one stick at a time to determine which one is bad.Well, since its DDR2 and they have to work together (or I think?) I believe I should just send both back and ask for a new pair.Try re-seating the ram first.Already did that.

Is wake on LAN enabled in the BIOS ? ?
If it is a program phoning home for updates will take it out of hibernation...

I'm a bit confused here. HIBERNATED computers aren't running programs, and wake on LAN works when an incoming packet is received... Isn't that right? Could it be e.g. a peer to peer program where your IP is being pinged because of a previous connection?

It could be that, and it can also be a server that was CONNECTED to while browsing and did not receive a disconnect. After a period of inactivity, many servers will check to see if the connection is STILL "live" before doing an automatic disconnect. Sometimes you have to disable wake on line in the NIC's properties as well as BIOS to prevent software overrides. So I should go into BIOS and try to find a setting that has to do with networking?Quote from: Soviet Genius on August 25, 2007, 10:54:54 AM
So I should go into BIOS and try to find a setting that has to do with networking?

It's usually called "Wake on LAN".

Maybe also change the BIOS settings for power saving from S1 & S3 to just S3 (STR).

You do mean hibernate and not SUSPEND? (They are different)

I don't know what to change, I took pictures of each menu:

In the Power menu, set "WOL in S4" to "Disabled".

WOL = Wake On LAN.

S4 = Hibernation.

It is currently set to "Enabled".

If you have tried once and it did not work look for the program/drivers in Add Remove and remove them.
Unhook the webcam from the machine using "safely remove hardware" from the tray.
DLoad the file above and save it to the desktop.
Shut down and re-boot...when Vista is fully loaded then double click the file above you DLoaded and the installation will start. At some point it will tell you when to plug the cam in...

Thanks for any imput.

RobertWell Windows ME was released just five months after and XP within a year, so they must have something to hide? Though from personal experience; no I have not used Windows 2000 so unfortunately I can not help.

I've heard, and the Wikipedia article on the OS enforces that it is especially prone to viruses and worms.

Maybe if you had the Service Pack 4 Revision 1 it would help?

If you can get it I'd just go with XP.From when I used it, it was very good, pretty similar to XP in looks (with XP in Classic, that is) but less demanding on the hardware.
I didn't use it all that much though, it was sort of 6 years ago so I can't remember too much about it.
From what I've heard from others it is one of the best MS has created in stability and performance. So, you started that at 10 years old Calum.

I first started on computers when I was 42 years
old.

Anyway thanks for the imput friend...... Before Windows 2000 I had been destroying . . . erm . . . working with . . . Windows 95 from 1996-1999, and Windows 98 from 1999 to 2003/2004.
Windows 2000 came at school in 2001/2002 I guess, not for long though because they changed to XP, as did we at home in 03/04 from Win98.
Sorry for the long explanation, just explaining . . . something or other, COL.I've been using 2000 Pro since it came out in...well...2000 I have a couple of offices I set up using it and a lot of banks I see use it.

Personally, I don't plan to change as it does 99% of what I want it to do. I'm behind a hardware firewall, use AntiVir & the standard AS stuff with no problems. System very, very rarely locks up.

Running SP4 with the rollout / 512M RAM & 80G hdd's (2).

Works for me

Alan <>< In my opinion the most stable OS MS ever released...i cannot remember the last time i saw a BSOD.
And as my primary testbench machine it gets tons of stuff thrown at it from BETA software to trial programs to test utilities...just keeps purring along.
One thing noticable though is for some reason it doesn't always release RAM after heavy tasking as well as XP or Vista. I find that if it's been running around 3 days STRAIGHT it will slow a little. Nothing a quick re-boot doesn't fix though.

It likes a defrag about every 3 weeks or so as well. Other than that i think you'll be pleasantly suprised.yah i actually like win2k it is very stable and has good driver support. Good luck let us know how it turns out. Thanks everyone.I am gonna try it.I did a read up on 2000
and it didn't have near the system requirements XP had.

So,I thought it would run faster on my 2 Dell computers I
just bought from E-Bay to experiment with.

I know that the GX110 has a good track record for those who
maintained them.

Anyway, $100.00 including shipping wasn't a great loss to toy
with other operating systems.

Here-They-Are..COL!They look so cute side by side...

GX1_Man will be excited...

Grab some EXTRA RAM for those bad boys and you'll be a happy camper.Well,I am posting with Windows 2000 pro right now.

Wonder why they ever made XP.

Thanks to everyone for your advice.

Oh!My Preeccious! Windows 2000 Pro.

Bwahahaha!

Congrats on gettin up and running...i think you'll find as time goes on you'll appreciate it even more.
XP had some more advanced features for home and office networking and added security measures that most want to know how to switch off more than anything but Win2K isn't missing much in side by side comparisons...
Did you send a pic to GX1_Man ? ?
As i said he' should be excited you've had twins !

Welcome aboard steet1
I think M$ brought out XP in the HOPE that everyone would bypass W2K when they realised what a good OS it was & they were giving it away for free

i hear fromeveryone it has all these bugs and way to many graphics...
should i get it? advice ....I don't KNOW...
How much money do you have ? ?
What do you use your computer for ? ?
What other flavors of Windows are you familiar with ? ?

I personally use Windows Vista, yes, it does have problems, but so does XP
As far as I am CONCERNED, the only bugless version of Windows is Windows 3.11 from 1993...

Windows Vista does offer a lot of little features that do come in use.
I learned last night that it has a great self repair feature, in case you get a disk error, or if something goes wrong with the BOOT loader

Windows Vista isnt all eye candy, the main part that you are upgrading is something you cant see. The stability
Honestly I had Vista on my laptop and although I loved the graphics and the look of it.... it just wasn't practical for what I wanted to do and I just got tired of searching for drivers for programs. They did a good job with it, but just needed to wait awhile before releasing it. I ended up putting XP back on my laptop cause I got too frustrated with Vista. I personally don't like it, but I'm sure once more stuff becomes compatible with it it will be better.Well i've been using Vista since before it came out and the only bug i've had is sometimes it wont connect to the internet. Other than that its a very stable operating system. The OS works well independently from the user which is both a good and bad thing. It automatically defrags in the background and provides several restore, backup, and security features that increase the stability of the OS but at the same time in an attempt to increase security they have the continuous pop ups to say "Allow this program to continue?" while a good feature there is no way to deactivate it. Oh and it needs more memory than XP. Overall I havent had any mysterious bugs or hardware problems at all and I personally like the Aero style look. The only major downside I see to Vista is when you change your hardware and you need to reinstall Vista you have to call up Windows Tech Support and tell them exactly what your doing and ask them to deactivate your CD Key so you can activate it again, of course thats just a downside for a "PC Enthusiast"I'm looking forward to the release of the first Service Pak which should clear a few glitches up...unfortunately that timeline has been pushed back once again.Quote from: James on July 02, 2007, 01:19:52 PM

User Account Control (UAC) can be disabled.

(The directions for Control Panel are the safest for your basic user, but the MSCONFIG ones might be more effective, though, I never tried the MSCONFIG one)

Quote

Oh and it needs more memory than XP.
Vista Home Premium requires 1GB of RAM. On average, you will only be using 50-60% of the memory.

This is the same for any version of Windows XP that has Windows Genuine Advantage installed.
(I thought you only needed to type your COA to get it reactivated)

A plus to the eye candy (Aero):
When you have Aero (from Windows Vista Home Premium and up) installed, it dosnt only make it look appealing, it does make it easier to use
Everything is given a look that makes your computer actually easier to use. Everything is cleaner. This is a major plus to operating your PC. Things just start "going together"

Go to a store like Staples, or Office Depot, and mess around with their vista computers/laptops and check it out and see what you think.
As an XP user, it took me 1 week to get used to Vista (after getting it on my new laptop)

The one thing you have to remember:
When Windows XP came out, it was just like Vista. New features, new look. A lot of people didnt like it. (Eventually they got new computers that came with it, and look at them now!!!)

Being that I like computer games for PC's, I do occasionally wish that I would have gotten more RAM. When I play a very high quality graphics game, I do end up using 93% of my RAM, limiting the space I have available for my apps to run, but then again, the game is full screen, so I dont tend to be multitasking while playing...
ive never used vista but ive heard its a video game hater and you cant play half the stuff you want to. if thats so i dont want it lolQuote from: scooterpickleman on July 02, 2007, 06:56:28 PM

Not necessarily true.
There are applications that will not WORK with Windows Vista, but then again, there are applications that will not work with XP

Read the requirements of the game, and check their website.
Newer games are going to be requiring Windows Vista soon

Solve : Need help. Some kind of bug.?

Answer»

Well . I NOTICED this a few weeks ago but I haven't figured out how to remove it.

When I access My Images , My Documents, the program Pinnacle etc. An INSTALLER for nero 7 comes up, and i have to spam cancel for a while until it's gone. Then i can continue using the program / images. ALthough the Nero window comes back a few times so It's really, really annoying.

Please what the *censored*?
Sounds like your computer came with annoying Trial software.

If you do not use Nero, go into Start>Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs (or "Uninstall a Program" in VISTA)

Find Nero, and Uninstall it. (Only if you don't want it!)

If this does not solve the problem:
What operating system are you using?

POSSIBLE solutions (if NOT solved by removing nero)
Wrong FILE association types. Correct the file associations to the correct program. Yes thank you, I removed nero from the list.
Funny thing tho, the nero program was not in that list before x), but thanks

Solve : NEED HELP ADDING OLD HARD DRIVE TO NEW VISTA SATA COMPUTER!?

Answer»

If ANYONE could help, I would be really appreciative. Here is the scenario:

1. Just bought a new HP computer w/ Windows Vista Home PREMIUM. It is a HP Pavillion a6113w.

2. I want to add a second hard drive from my old computer. The hard drive is 1 yr old and has NO OS on it...Just misc files. It is a Maxtor 200gb HD.

3. My new computer is wired with "SATA" cables. My old computer was the standard IDE wiring, it was bought new in 2002. I had to add the old Maxtor drive by using the IDE ribbon-type wiring harness. I attached it to the IDE slot on the motherboard, then to the harddrive and plugged in the power supply.

4. When I do that, I get the message "Error Loading OS" when the computer is in start up, and it stops there.

5. As I mentioned, there is NO operating system on the Maxtor drive. Is my jumper cable placement incorrect? Someone thinks I need to fix this issue by going into the computer's BIOS???

Any help would be greatly appreciated so I can add this secondary drive to my computer. THanks.I had the same problem.

Cause: When I added the EIDE drive it set itself as the FIRST boot drive, HENCE no OS

Solution: ENTER BIOS and look for a "Boot Priority" function NOT the option to boot from CD-ROM, Floppy first etc and change the boot priority back to the SATA drives.

Solve : Literally driving me insane...?

Answer»

Ok....this might not seen like a big problem to some people, however i always have my desktop clean. To the point of not being able to relax otherwise etc. I dont know if its OCD of some kind i hope not but it drives me nuts when it isn't CLEAR. Anyway to the problem, i can't delete "cabal_total" from my desktop and it is literally driving me insane, i also have a lot of work to do and don't seem to be able to with a messy desktop. It gives me the whole this file is being used by another program etc

Here are some things i have done so far:
-Tried renaming
-Restarted various times
-Ran AVG/Spybot/Adaware
-Renaming (can rename but it does nothing)
-Moving and then hopefully deleting (won't even move)
-Used task manager to see if ther are any random processes running it could be attached to
-Shut down just about all the running programs (i think)
-Punched my monitor
-Punched keyboard
-Shed a tear, lol

As for SPECS etc:
-Vista
-8Gb DDR2 8000 ram
-2.67 Mhz DUAL Core
-320 GB HD
-GeForce 8800
And the program itself was from Cabal Online an online MMORPG, it seemed to be part of the downloading package that started on my desktop. It seemed to be taking ages so i stopped it and managed to delete the other parts of it, this i have done before and it managed to delete all of it, making this case even more confusing.

So please....it HONESTLY is literally driving me up the wall ;-;have you tried in safe mode and/or with killbox??I found 'unlocker'just lately.I was having the same problem.Remember
to read the readme txt that installs with the program.

GoHerei have dled that just havent need to use it yetIt sounds like the file might be part of a process.

Have you tried running the uninstaller? (Start>Control Panel>Uninstall a Program)

If there is no uninstaller, click Start>Run and type:
msconfig
(press enter or click OK)

Click the "Startup" tab
See if you can find anything that contains that file name. If you do, uncheck the check box, click OK, and restart your computer, and then try deleting. KingK, I do not think you are obsessive at all. Or, perhaps, if you are then I am too, because I just hate a cluttered desktop that looks like a Christmas tree. I do not have a single shortcut on my desktop. In my opinion, only very badly written software, which is better avoided, insists on dumping crap all over the desktop.

I think that Unlocker program that has been mentioned might WELL do the trick.

Or if not, you could try the Desktop component of Tweak UI, which ships as part of Microsoft PowerToys for XP

which you can get here

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx

Since you've got a ton of suggestions already, I might as well add another.

You can search for the file with Process Explorer. This will tell you what program(s) is using it. Simply close the handle and it should allow you to remove it.

Solve : windows home / windows pro?

Answer»

I was just wondering what the diffrence is between the 2 , im thinking about getting windows pro , should i ... is there any diffrences at all , im using home at the moment.XP PRO was considered to be more robust, networked easier, had a few small but expensive things included that was not in the XP Home version.
having used both i only had PROBLEMS with the networking of XP Home, If you are intending using it as a sole singular computer and not a networked system Home will suit your purposes just fine, as well as you can get the less expensive update versions for Vista, if you decide to GO along that route eventually,
XP Pro cannot be updated into Vista (ACCORDING to microsoft) therefore you would have to purchase a more expensive Vista Full version Quote from: uesquebeathus on July 03, 2007, 06:57:32 AM

XP Pro cannot be updated into Vista (according to microsoft) therefore you would have to purchase a more expensive Vista Full version
Are you SURE about that? Can you provide support for that statement? Probably not.Can not connect xp home in network based domain. Here YA Go...Thanks everyone that cleared that up thanks for the link patio You're more than Welcome...

Solve : Resolved: Cannot Copy and Paste Windows Calendar?

Answer»

This has been driving me crazy for 3 days. I have tried to find help all over Microsoft's stupidly inadequate "help" sites to no avail. Someone please, please help me.

I have Windows Vista Home Premium on an HP laptop, lots of RAM and double hard drives. None of the particulars of my system seem RELEVANT to my problem. I hope I'm not wrong and causing someone who is willing to help me inconvenience. I also have Microsoft OFFICE Home and Student which includes OneNote.

My problem is that I need to copy and paste the calendar I have created in my Windows Calendar (which is included in Windows Vista) to a page in OneNote. I have done this twice previously without a problem that I can remember. I COPIED calendars for May and June onto their appropriate pages in the OneNote folder I am using for personal organization. Now, it's time to copy the July calendar to its page and I can't do it.

On the calendar page of Windows Calendar I cannot get the curser to change from an arrow to a line so that I can "select" the area to copy. I have tried one click, double click and triple click. Right clicking only gives me a short menu relevant to the calendar program-not the one you usually get with "undo, cut, copy, paste, delete, etc." And left clicking only has program specific affects like changing the month or some other things depending on where the arrow curser is pointing.

I would just accept the calendar as a "no copy zone" if I hadn't been able to copy it previously. I can't figure out what is different. I have looked at each of the drop down menus repeatedly and can't see anything that would allow or prevent the curser changing to "highlighting or selecting mode".

I have looked at the curser and mouse controls on the control panel. I don't see anything helpful there either. Besides, the curser works fine everywhere else, as far as I can see.

*censored*!?!? I'm pulling my hair out! And wasting hours, YES, HOURS of the time I am trying so hard to organize.

I've tried work-arounds like e-mailing it to myself, but I only get an attachment that when opened is the same d*** page that won't let me copy it.

Please, please, please somebody help me. If I can't copy the d*** calendar, what good is it to me? How STUPID this is!!

Okay, I'll go try to calm myself down. Sorry about ranting and swearing. You should hear me in person

Anyway, thanks.

I don't have vista but are you right clicking and holding it down and highlighting it, then right click on the highlighted area and you should get the copy menu. If this is what you are doing then I'm sorry for wasting your time.Windows Calendar will not allow you to copy the entire calendar.

You say that you were able to do it once... I tested it for myself, and there is no possible way. Perhaps you were using a different Calendar program, like Microsoft Works?

Your One Note program may be able to support importing of a calendar.

In Windows Calendar, click File, EXPORT
Save the .ics file to your desktop as something like "my calendar"

In Windows One Note, click File, IMPORT
See if you can get the file into it from the desktop. (No problem, flopeyeman--thanks for trying)

Zylstra--

Thank you so much. Your ASSURANCE that what I was trying to do couldn't be done helped me to break out of the mental knot I had tied myself in.

With enormous chagrin, I report that I finally figured out that I had used the SnagIt program that I had trialed and which had expired and therefore was not funtional.

Oh, I feel like such an idiot--especially with these bald patches all over my head, and my mouth in need of a good soaping.

Thank you, enormously. I feel pretty stupid, but at least I have learned that there is somewhere to go when computer insanity overtakes me.

Your actual, thoughtful attention to my problem, I think, is a good part of what saved me from spinning alone in that vortex--you should see the note I got back from Microsoft. Thank the heavens, I saw yours first or I may never have recovered.

Again, THANK YOU!!Eh, bald spots just mean that your generation is being surpassed by another, it doesn't mean you cant learn and surpass the other generations knowledge (<
What exactly did Microsoft say?
And did Windows OneNote have a import for calendar files?
