Hey all,
I just recently started getting the "Invalid system disk...Replace the disk, and then press any key" error at bootup, and I can't seem to figure out how to fix this. What is interesting is if I change the boot order to boot from the CD-ROM first, and put the Vista install disc in, Windows will boot fine. It says to "Press any key to boot from disc"...I dont press anything, and then Vista boots up. Here is what I have tried so far:

-Made sure all IDE cables are hooked up properly and that the system detects my hard drives in BIOS(it does)

-Tested the Motherboard battery by saving new SETTINGS in the BIOS and seeing if it remembers them on the next boot up (it does)

-Put the Vista Ultimate install disc in the drive and running the startup repair test (it passed saying it could not find any errors)

-System Restored BACK to a previous day (Only boots if the Windows disc is in the CD drive)

-For fun, I defraged my C: drive (the drive with Windows on it)...still doesn't work.

It seems to me like one of the system startup files may have gotten corrupted because Windows boots fine from the disc, so I dont think its the hard drive. Any ideas on how I can fix this problem. Thanks in advance for any help you guys can provide!


is this vista an upgrade? when did this start? are some other specs of your machine?This was a full Vista install. The computer has been working fine for the past month and a half or so and it just started happening last night. Here are my system specs:

OS: Windows Vista Ultimate 32 Bit Edition
CPU: AMD 64 3000+
RAM: 1 Gb
Manufacturer: It is homemade

You normally GET these type of errors because the hard drive is on its way out. I would back up your data and than shop for a new hard drive.

I have a Dell E1505 Laptop with a 256MB nVidia GeForce Go 7300 (Which, since its using the Turbo Cache, really has 357MB RAM)
The computer itself has 1GB RAM, and a 1.73GHz DuoCore processor

Just yesterday, Aero was WORKING fine. Today, it has stopped working. Its no longer showing up. (No glass, no card flip, etc... all the eye-candy is gone)

The most recent modification I made was a CHANGE to the registry, I revered this change, and it did not solve anything. (I made it so that all the Vista code was loaded into the RAM at the computers start, so it would run faster)

Maybe your computer is not detecting enough RAM to use it, and it turned it off.

hi i installed windows vista on my COMPUTER but kept xp on aswell it worked fine switching from one to the other till i switched on computer today and it said i have 2 files named c would i like to change one i said yes it restared computer but only blue screen came up now cant even reboot from xp disc just KEEP getting xp logo then blue screen then it restarts again can anyone help?This is most likely a conflict of the two operating systems (I think I just stated something we all already know)

Were both operating systems installed on the same hard disk?

And what about Safemode?

3. what is the word on vista? not that i have a choice, i HEARD thats all you get now, i have always used xp.
I know this is sort of a BASIC QUESTION, but i don't want to buy anything until i ask somebody that knows better.

My brother-in-law's work laptop (IBM ThinkPad with Centrino Mobile) has Windows 2000 but does not appear to have any way of searching for a wireless network. The wireless network we have set up at home works fine but for that to be so I had to enter the information in the wireless card's PROPERTIES (SSID and such) but that limits it to home use. There should be a Wireless icon of some sort. As I recall, Windows 2000 does not have built in WiFi capibilities. Make sure your wireless card software is installed.
I know about the icon you're referring to, as described in my initial email (the little computer with the curved lines next to it) but it's not there. I had a laptop a few years ago with the same system and it had the ability to search but this ONE does not. It appears the only way to connect to a network is through properties and entering the SSID manually and such, which is cumbersome. Is there a program or update I can download?The driver program for the wireless device may include a connection wizard...or maybe try IBM's site and search under the model # of the laptop.I went to the IBM website and downloaded a driver update package but all that did was mess things up. The old one was from 2004 and the new one is from this year. I input all the info for my home wireless network and it won't connect at all. The time I input the information again it said it was connected but Explorer wouldn't pick anything up. I RESTARTED and now I get nothing. What the *censored*?It sounds like you might have accidentally downloaded the Windows Vista driver, if it was from this year.

Go back to their site, and make sure you get the driver for your operating system, and if it still wont work, could you give us the link to the download site? Thanks to those of you who have assisted me in the past. I believe I have the proper driver downloaded and installed. I also downloaded and installed ThinkVantage Access Connections so I can scan for WiFi and such. I have input the security information for my wireless network at home and it gets to the verge of connection (and a completed task for me) but it won't finish connecting due to an error with renewing the IP address configuration (the last step). When I click on "Help Me Fix This" it takes me to a diag tool that tells me the DHCP server is not responding (Error CODE: 031). I can click on a "Repair" button but that doesn't help any. I know I have this option with Windows XP and that has helped in the past but not here since this is on Windows 2000. I know the wireless network is working because I'm using it as I type on my desktop right now. The only other suggestion it gives it to contact my network administrator but that's me and up to now, everything was fine (until I started screwing around with this stupid computer).

I should also note that under ipconfig in DOS the DNS suffix is blank, the autoconfig IP address starts with 169 (which is bad, I think), the subnet mask ends in two zeroes, and the default gateway is blank.

I tried to repair and release the IP address via the diag tool but that didn't work either.

Another attempt: I tried to renew the ipconfig via DOS but it said "the following error occurred when renewing adapter WiFi Connection: DHCP Server unreachable."

Finally, I tried to enter the missing information (IP address, DNS server) in the settings for my home wireless network. It said it was connected but really wasn't. I have tried to repair the drivers via Add/Remove Programs to no avail.

Hi all, I have a major problem on my computer and been looking around for help. I'm new here and hopefully I can find some answers to my problem. THanks.

I have just built my new computer. Everything seems okay. I have installed XP Pro SP2. Ran perfect. I installed it in partition C:

Then I have decided to install VISTA business as a multiple OS system. I used Partition Magic to create another PRIMARY partition where my VISTA will sit. THis was partition D: Then I got some logical partitions for pure storage purposes.

FOr some reason, my computer froze in the process of VISTA installation. I restarted computer but installation did not continue where it stopped. So I installed a brand new copy onto that partition D: (Of course, I reformatted D: before I installed). VISTA is then installed.


BUT, when I boot up, I thought I am supposed to see a boot menu with 2 choices: Earlier version of windows (XP) and VISTA. I didn't get that screen at all, it just boots right into VISTA. But I can see that my XP partition is still there.

What can I do to bring that boot menu up again so I can choose XP or VISTA?

PS: after all that installation, my VISTA partition became C: and my XP partition became D:....I duno what the *censored* happened here............. Take your pick:

I'm a computer technician and I feel sorry for you buddy. You tried to do the old Dual boot trick and it stuffed your mbr eh

Personally what I would do in this SITUATION is create a very small primary partition at the end of your DRIVE (you know how to do that). You should make it FAT and at least 2MB. Create a Bootable CD that can get into DOS prompt and copy a boot loader called XOSL http://www.ranish.com/part/ into that partition. You will probably want to use a windows 98 boot disk or a dos boot disc, which might be hard to find but i'm sure you're smart enough. Once you have copied the XOSL folder into the partition, run it and install it to that partition. You now have a boot loader which allows you to choose which partition you want to set active.

In my opinion it's better to set the partition active to install and boot multiple Operating Sysytems that way, rather than compiling the windows boot.ini to multi-boot your PC.

After you have done this your computer may or may not work. You will get a little boot loader START up and you can choose to boot off primary partitions so you can setup partition for windows xp and partition for windows vista.

If you get this far and everythings working then you can wipe the end FAT partition of your harddrive, since the bootloader is your mbr and doesn't actually sit on the end of your harddrive, however you should create a backup of your mbr by using a DOS based tool such as mbrrest and a windows based one as well (they both can load and restore mbr files no matter what extension it has).

If you get this far and windows xp doesn't boot even though you configured it in XOSL then you will need to rebuild your mbr by using a tool such as partition doctor. You can then try XOSL again and if windows xp now loads, but vista doesn't load then you will need to do these steps 1)Set the primary partion you are installing vista to as active 2)install vista onto the partition now that its active 3)Install XOSL again

Just a small note about active partitions - There can only be one active partition at one time, if you look in partition magic you will see which partition is active. If you see that your vista partition is active, then that is a good sign, if windows xp is still active then you are going to have a few problems and need to follow the lengthy process I WROTE. The active partition is where your operating system will load from and it will also show up as C: which is what you said. Thats why I suspect you are in luck, but you should check the settings in partition magic and if it is active then get XOSL now and it will work fine.

just make sure you save your mbr before installing XOSL since it will overwrite your current one, just incase it doesnt work!

I can't say, however, how well it would run. Personally...with all of the compatibility issues that still need to be worked out, I would wait a bit. You already have a chance of certain devices not being compatible. At this point, I don't think you would benefit much from having Vista, and I think it would be best to wait a couple of months. This is just my OPINION, of course.well i dont mind waiting but HALO 2 wont run on DIRECT x 9 only 10... THE ONLY REASON LOL IM GETTING VISTA , its anoying they are only bringing it out on vista its like i have been robbed....lol DX10 will install on XP if i'm not mistaken...Ok dont fully quote me on this , but i think calum told me dx10 wouldnt .......... thats why i want vista so badly....

You can look around a bit and give it a try, but DX10 is meant to be Vista-exclusive, so don't expect to have a lot of LUCK getting it to work on XP.

If you don't have any information saved, and if you haven't been able to really start messing around with it, I recommend that you redo the installation. It SEEM that computer manufacturers are making errors appear, not Windows. (For example: Dell was installing in-compatible software on their computers for QUITE a while, and it took them forever to fix it)

First off let me state that this is a legal copy of xp home on the computer I installed it myself for my wife's grandpa.

It looks like since the last windows update he is getting the windows genuine advantage popping up telling him that his version of xp could be bad. So far I have used jellybean key finder to double check and make SURE that I didn't possibly put the code in wrong for it but it is correct. What else is there to do to get rid of the error can m$ do anything.

The funny part about it all is that if you click on it it tells you possible causes and this and that and it offers to sell you a copy of vista lol. It is the legit error though i double checked that alsoYou need to call Microsoft and tell them your PROBLEM. Then they either give you a new key or remove your current one from the black list. (Not 100% sure on whether they do the one or the other )yah i will give that a try tonight. It is just frustrating as heck because it is something i can just repair for him on a Sunday it has to be DONE during the week during normal business hours because they are not open on weekends. Or at least that is what the messege told me when i CALLED them

suggestion, u may 1 PARTITION in NTFS and the another 1 in FAT32,
and install the bootmagic into ur FAT32 hard DRIVE,
then SETTING up the bootmagic in your PC

I'm TRYING to perform the double install upgrade trick with vista on a self built pc (spec below)

Vista will read from all other CDs and DVDs that I've tried apart from its own install DVD, just wondering if theres anything particularly different about the Vista DVD disk and whether theres anyway i can force it to read

additional note to the above: i've already built several identical spec PCs (today) and not had as problem so i'm pretty sure its a hardware prob with the DVD drive, but the FACT that it reads other dvds suggests possibly config issues, not sure what though. I have to send my laptop back to The manufacturer to have the BIOS PASSWORD re-set. I've already TRIED every other solution and came up empty. I just want to know what i can expect from my laptop when i get it back will it be like it was or will they have to re-install Vista. It was a stupid mistake on my part after a improper shut down that caused this problem a problem i had never heard of before. I couldn't get the technichians to give me a whole lot of info about what to epect makes a LIL leery about sending it off but i'm gonna anyway. First off, this software will most likely not work on a laptop, but there is a chance if your BIOS is on the list. Read all the warnings too.

I have 2 hard drives. A 20gb ONE (C:) with XP pro installed and a 160gb one split into 2 partitions. The 1st partition just contains data (F:) and the 2nd partiiton (V:) I installed vista on.

I installed vista from within XP by running the vista iso file (downloaded from msdn) using daemon tools (I don't have a DVD writer YET). The install was a clean install onto the V: drive and seemed to install fine.

On the 1st reboot, it continued the setup and installed all files and features. On the 2nd reboot though, I got a winload.exe error when it was trying to boot from vista. The boot list comes up fine, with xp and vista present.

Having looked at other forums, I haven't been able to find a SOLUTION, although it seems to be something with the vista boot file, bcdedit. Does anyone have a possible solution?

Not sure how to find out what version of the FINAL release this is.

I used daemon tools because I don't yet have a DVD writer to burn the iso file on. The V: drive is a partition I created from the second hard drive.

winpe YesI think this could possibly be the reason why vista isn't booting up, but I'm not sure how to fix it.

When I boot up using the XP CD, and go to the recovery console, I have 2 windows options. The C: drive (which has XP) and strangely, E: drive for vista yet I installed it on the V: drive. Plus my E: drive is my CD/RW drive which has no CD inside it. When I load into XP normally, the vista files are all on the V: drive.

Any ideas?Personally whenever i setup a dual-boot machine i have had the most success with the simple approach.
The less changing of drive letters the better.
For yours it would be obviously C: drive XP
Then 2nd HDD
D: and E:
CDRom F:
DVD or other if NEEDED G:

With XP installed to C: and the drive letters set as above re-install Vista to the first partition of the 2nd physical drive which would be D:

This should keep them both happy and playing nice side by side...and since the BIOS is ID'ing them in the same order there's less that can confuse Windows here.

This is how i have my XP machine set up and i have no boot issues...Vista issues yes, but no boot problems.

ThanksTry reinstallng vista. And whatever you do, dont install vista on a drive and then install XP or older on same drive becuase vista needs the master boot file to boot with out any problems.

I'm running Windows Vista and Internet Explorer browser. My question is I have a toshiba Satellite A135-S4467 notebook and the DVD/CD-R quit reading. I get a Code 39 error saying file is corrupted. I recently bought a new HP dv9339 notebook PC with Vista HOME pre-installed. There's tons to hate about Vista, but I do acknowledge that it's probably what I'll want to use for some applications (if not all, eventually). With that in mind, I created a new partition, turned off SATA support (necessary for installing XP), and installed XP Pro.
Since HP doesn't support XP any more, I had to search for a lot of the drivers I needed, but I installed them one by one (except for my audio drivers and USB drivers), and soon I had a pretty functional version of XP running. For about two days. Then, out of the blue and not related to any changes as far as I could see, I got a IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL BSOD. When I turned my computer back on, the motherboard gave me a series of angry BEEPS and the monitor failed to turn on. I gave it a rest, tried again, and got a message saying that "E:\Windows\System\System32\" was missing or corrupted (E was the XP partition I'd created). the weird thing is, after I reformatted E and reinstalled XP on it, these problems remained (MOST of the time; occasionally I could boot into XP just fine).

Luckily, Circuit City has a great return policy (no questions asked) so I got a fresh one. I'm just running Vista on it right now, and I'm scared to try XP again. I'm wondering if these problems were a hardware issue (in which CASE I don't care, I've got a new computer), or something I did by installing XP--and if it's an XP problem, is there any WAY for me to install XP on this machine without killing it?The issue was most likely caused by installing incompatible drivers.

Windows Vista can handle the newer drivers, but XP cannot in most cases, specifically with OEM distributed drivers.

Also, since it is an OEM distributed driver, you may have even more TROUBLE finding the driver.

XP is old software now, just like ME, 2000, 98, 95, 3.11, 3.1, 3.0, 2.1, 2.0, 1.1, 1.0 You will have to Install XP first becuase of a Boot setting in vista.Quote

Open Windows Explorer, so it shows the folder "F:\Documents and Settings", and right click that folder. Select "Search", and type *.dbx into the "Search for files And Folders" box. Check the "Advanced Options" box, check "Search System Folders, "Search Hidden Files And Folders" and "Search subfolders". Click "Search Now".

You are LOOKING for .dbx files which are in folders which will have names like this

{9EFEBDEA-CE00-4DD7-A4D6-CDB85C3EEDBF}\Microsoft\Outlook Express

The numbers and letters will be different.

Do that now.

My PC computer with xp started crashing. Is an acer aspire 5000. Might have been a virus. Regardless, at this point, I am trying to get all info off the puter. I tried using a CD -- it will not recognize the CD as something to be copied to. I came home with the wrong product when I tried to find a usb to usb cable to see if that would work, so might try that soon if answer still not found. I ALSO had a San Disk cruzer external small usb memory thing of 512 mb.... I just tried it, and it did work at first. I was able to transfer one folder over to my other computer.

In the meantime, I bought a computer with windows vista. Is a PC, acer aspire 5100. Large mistake -- i thougth windows vista meant windows xp with other goodies. Was not the case. According to info on this computer... 2.0 ghz, 512 kb, 100 gb, etc... this computer should be running faster then my other computer (the xp). Yet... I have a Ton of programs on my xp (was running out of space).... and I have hardly installed ANYTHING on the new computer.. and it runs slower. Even with the xp computer almost broke -- the internet still serves much faster then on the vista one, certain programs will not run on the vista one, and the vista one is just downright slow. I bought it on ebay, and there was a sliver in the "if this seal is broken, contact SOMEONE..." part. So -- I don't know if this product is what it was appearing to be online when I bought it or not.

My computer is my job... so I need desperately to find answers -- and my immediate thing -- is that I need to get my files off of the xp. I have an external hard drive being shipped, and will save things onto there once transferred. It will be very hard for me financially to pay someone to get the info off the hard drive of the xp -- and I am too chicken to just take it out and try to install it in the new computer. If I ruin something, I will not be able to purchase another computer.

Yet... to finish... when I tried to transfer the memory on the usb memory transfer thingy -- when I try to install it on the new vista computer -- it is now saying that it cannot recognize the USB. I don't have a CD for this product, and thinking about it-- don't think that it came with one anyway.

Not sure what to do -- if there is something to get the vista computer working better -- or was it just a fraud offer? And... how to transfer the information from my xp computer that has been crashing onto something....

And to add one more thing -- as I thought I just needed to wait patiently for the external hard drive to arrive (before trying much to get info off of the xp)... the longer time goes so far, the more files are getting corrupted on the computer... and the less functional the computer gets.

The first thing you need to do is to make sure that your old computer is free of viruses and bugs. What Anti-virus program were you running? You say your files are getting corrupted. This doesn't sound like a computer crashing. What MAKES you think that your old computer is crashing?I had no anti-virus program running on it. I think they make you pay monthly, or make you purchase their product (or both) -- and obviously with a new computer, I will make sure that I keep a working anti-virus program on it if I can afford it (though I realize the cost might be greater in the long run if I do not pay for the virus protection).

A lot of programs will no longer upload. I also, when trying to make more space in the add/delete prgrograms box..... deleted something that I was not sure what it was. And I don't know what the name of it was -- there is a chance that I deleted something that needed to be there.

As I have been looking at it more -- I am now realizing that this all may have been a virus as the main issue. I was getting the impression at first though, that the computer was just toast, as program after program started not being able to open or function properly, then files after file started not being able to open or be worked with, andfile after file started showing up as corrupt --- YET.... I now realize that signifies probable virus was a main issue.

In that case, perhaps if I get a working anti-virus program on the older computer, it Might fix a large part of the issue.
Adding that I just now tried to install the free trial of norton anti virus on the computer that seems to have a virus. A minimum of 1 GB of RAM is usually recommended to keep Vista running smoothly.

You said 512kb. I'm presuming that that is the amount of RAM on the Aspire 5100. If you would like to get to get that computer running faster, I would install more RAM, but be sure to check and make sure that it is the same kind of RAM already inside the computer.

If you have questions or need help, open up the computer (the 5100) and pull out the RAM card. (Be sure to turn off the computer first! ) On the card there should be a small sticker with details about the RAM. Post those here and I can help you find what kind of RAM you need to buy. I completely forgot the other part of your problem..

As far as transfering your files from your old computer to your new one goes, I would use an external hard drive. A small one (small meaning not a huge amount of memory space) would be fine if you want to save money and don't mind making a few trips from the old computer to the new one.

If your USB port on your old computer works, then you should be ok. Buy an external hard drive. Make sure it is pre-formatted and I wouldn't recommend a Maxtor as I am currently having troubles with one myself. If it has "plug n play" that is BEST, as the computer will instantly see the hard drive without having to install anything.

All you would need to do then, is plug it in your old computer, copy all your files and documents on to it, either manually or do a disk backup, and then plug it into your new computer and upload all the files. Simple, no?Kimberly, Let's just concentrate on the old computer for now. Google and download AVG. It's free and one of the best anti-virus programs around; certainly better than Norton. Once you install it, run a scan to get rid of any bugs you find. Please let us know. If you're using your new computer to go on the internet, install AVG on that computer to keep it protected, then burn AVG to a CD and install it on your old computer. DO NOT try to transfer any files from the old computer to the new one just yet. First off, I would like to thank everyone who has been helping me. I had ordered an external hard drive a week or few ago -- that I had to return as it did not work -- yet I received the new one that I ordered after from a different place, and as of today got all info off the old computer onto the external hard drive (took about 7 hours, as the computer was not wanting to work properly -- yet all I can say, is I am Glad I got my info off there! ).

The new computer, I will be returning soon, and in the meantime, ran the norton virus scan throughout all files on the external hard drive that came off of the crashing computer. There were no viruses, spyware, or any other problems found.

When on the crashing computer though, one file after another was still not opening. And as I was transfering things, more programs began not to work. In the end, it was not letting me send some things to trash. And it kept shutting down over and over.

I was finally able to download the norton virus scan on there (I had not read the last note yet on here).... yet it keeps shutting down in the middle of the scan. At this point, I can just recover the whole system, and let it whipe everything off. If I find I need to use a program on there while waiting to get a new computer, I might try to download the other virus scan that you were talking about.

So, at this point, I think all is safe regarding the programs on that were on the crashing computer. And it looks like I got them off right at the blink of time. I now will need to wait an see what to be doing while waiting to be able to get a new computer, as not sure when I will (or if I will) get a refund for this one (though I heard paypal will help give refunds for purchases on ebay that were frauds).

i have a hp m7674n running the upgrade version of vista. my problem is with my flash player. it wont install. when i try to run videos it says i either have flash turned off or an old version. when i try to download the newest version. it doesnt install. i tried using the MACROMEDIA un-installer and starting from scratch but it still doesnt work. the flash player worked fine for about a MONTH after i installed vista...but now it doesnt work or install. ive spent several hours online with a tech from hp and they just keep having me reinstall it and pretty much cant figure out why it doesnt work. has anyone else had this problem? where should i go from here? it sucks having this great computer with no flash player. update....ive been working on this issue again for another couple of wasted hours. ive un-installed using a different uninstaller and re-installed from another link. still nothing works. i noticed this...and this seemes like the problem. i go the the tools tab on internet explorer, hit ie options...general tab...settingss...view objects....shockwave flash objects...properties...dependancy tab and then i see "filename * and size damaged" obviously the file is damaged...but why wont it completely uninstall so i can install a new undamaged version? ive tried the uninstaller from the adobe website and anotherone i found on the net, tried re-installing it only to find the same damaged message and the same error messages when i try to run flash. ive noticed from the net that this is a COMMON problem that adobe and microsoft are working on. in the meantime ive got a $2k computer thats worth nothing on the internet without a working flash player...any suggestions or anyone else dealing with this problem? Hi everyone.
I've got a problem with WINDOWS Update on Vista (running on an Acer Aspire 5100 laptop (5102AWLMi)) having updated a SATA driver and it now crashes every time it tries to boot up. I've tried every single option on the screen you get by pressing the F8 key at BOOTUP and it still crashes, about 2 seconds into the loading screen. I've printed the STOP error message below. . There is an Acer eRecovery partition on the drive that I booted from but it will just reflash the hard drive to what it was out of the factory and I don't FEEL like spending hours reinstalling software on it.
I'm a linux guy personally and I've booted a LiveCD on it (with NTFS write support) and I want to use it to replace the broken SATA drivers with the ones from the recovery partition, except I don't know what their filenames are and a Google search doesn't reveal much.

So, does anyone know the filenames for Vista's SATA drivers?

I have a HP computer with Windows Vista. I have a CD with jpeg files on it that I made a while ago on another computer (non-vista). WHENEVER I insert the DISC into my new computers disc-drive the autoplay function seems to stall at the 'searching for CONTENT' stage. The only other bit of information that may be useful is the file system is CDFS (from right-clicking the properties function).
Can anyone provide a solution to this one?

I upgraded from '98 to Vista. In '98, when USING Windows Explorer, you would get a total NUMBER of files within a folder displayed in the lower left-hand corner under your main list of folders. Vista doesn't have that. Is there any way to have Vista display total number of files within displayed folders when using Explorer without MANUALLY counting them?I just LOOKED at various folders on my computer (running Vista), and all of them had an icon in the bottom-left corner with the items count next to it.

Some updates dont install untill you shutdown the PC, and as other users have siad manual update should sort out your problem either way Try unselecting all the updates and then selecting one at a time. Ignoring those that do not install correctly, - then search up on the error codes for that particular update. Or post extra info here if you can't find a resolution.

If you Google the KBxxxxxxx number of the update then you can find if it even relates to a part of your OS that is enabled. (eg the KB935807 update does not install on many (Vista?) PCs, though it addresses the Windows Firewall - which most people (i hope), are not using. So it therefore would be better to just 'Hide' the update.hi and thanks

Seems to me if you wipe the hard drive clean, you can pretty much put whatever operating system you WANT on it.

Of course, you may have to find XP compatible drivers for the hardware installed on your computer.

Using a new Dell notebook, not able to send emails with Vista email client, have tried Incredimail with the same result.
Have checked with ISP email address and incoming and outgoing servers setting are correct.

You may have to program Defender to allow your e-mail clients to CONNECT to the mail servers.

I changed motherboards from a GIGABYTE 965P-S3 to a ECS NFG650iSLIT-A. Before I changed the boards I had vista already installed. After I changed to the new board I turned it on and a message said I needed to repair windows. So I PUT the dvd in and TOLD the board the boot from the dvd. I tried the repair thing and it didn't find anything to fix. I tried the system restore back to the earliest DATE, but that didn't do anything. I ran the memory test. I didn't have any memory errors. What should I do now? Should I just try to install Vista LIKE I did the first time?

When you change a device, and Windows cant start (in Windows Vista), Vista will attempt to fix it for you.

Once you have done that, go ahead and start Windows normally.

If it wont start, you have a major compatibility issue.
Windows Vista may need to be reinstalled, or a repair instalation is in order.

And also:
Did you see any errors? Did you remember to install the new MBoard drivers ? ?

Setting up separate account is not a solution for me. No annoying encripted zip file scheme either (I need to use my files frequently).

What I need is a folder behaving like a simple LOCK box that can be QUICKLY opened by a password key and, voila, there they are, all my files in their naked glory ready to be seen and used and then put away at a drop of a hat.

After researching a bit I found TrueCrypt http://www.truecrypt.org/ which does what I want: a virtual lock box/vault that I can drag and drop files.

From what I saw, TrueCrypt is THE best open-source utility out there for file & folder locking app. Even better, it's truely free. The only other utility that appears to be in the same league with TrueCrypt is the glitzy commercialized "Folder Lock" http://www.newsoftwares.net/folderlock/. But this will set you back $35 USD.

TrueCrypt is simply awsome. The author said he'll never comercialize TrueCrypt to stay true to the open-source spirit. But you're welcome to donate--This piece of work absolutely worth every single penny there is to count.

Last but not least, beware of free trojans out there. They can come loaded with snoopware and done stealing critical data from your computers before you finish yelling "Hot dangit..."

I thought it would be great if the little nifty BAT file can be turned into an EXE file
thus hide the code and the password from the casual users (like yours truly myself).

So I tried bat2exe which started out real promising.
It spits out the COM file fine. When run, it creates the locker folder fine too.

But it won't let you enter a password to lock and hide the locker folder like the BAT version. It RAN but won't stop and prompt the user for the psswd.
MAYBE the prompting code didn't get compiled correctly or something.

So, just to see if I could start to run it, I installed BF 2142. I got through the installation just fine, but when I try to start it, I get an error saying that the game has stopped working. I just purchased a new computer that has VISTA on it about a month or so ago. With-in the past WEEK or so, i have had problems with shutting the computer down. Everytime I shut the computer down, the computer restarts. I have searched for solutions to this problem, but havent found anything that fixes it. Any help on here would be greatly appreciated, as I am so lost when it COMES to using Vista. You might want to try dis-abling ACPI in the BIOS to see if this remedies the situation...if you are unfamiliar with using SETUP ask someone who knows the ins and outs of the BIOS.

The other option would be to backup any data you need and exercise the warranty...a brand new machine shouldn't be doing this.yeah i was thinking of bringing the pc back to compusa... but i figured maybe if its something SIMPLE i can fix then i would try that. ya know.,Understood.

The only drawback to that approach is you could possibly void a warranty on a brand new machine by trying to fix it yourself which you may need at a later date in case there are serious problems that would be costly to fix without a warranty.

I can understand wanting to learn how to fix it yourself, however.

Since the beginning of the year we have purchased a "Cisnet' computer that came loaded with Win Xp-pro media center.
Part of the purchase agreement included a "free" version of Windows vista HOME premium edition when it became available.
The computer mfgr. has delivered to me the Vista software on a disk with the Microsoft key and holograms on it. There is a condition of use that it is only to be used on the Cisnet computer that we purchased.
I have been following the many comments (elsewhere as well as CH) re people's thoughts on Vista. The consensus LEANS toward the negative side (for a variety of reasons) re Vista at the moment.

Jonas This is an advisory to those that have POSTED on this thread and as well to those that may have viewed it and are awaiting a status report.
1.While i have yet to overcome my wife's resistance to "fiddling " with her computer (the Cisnet) my natural couriosity obliged me to experiment with one of my own computers. A Sony Vaio model PCV-RXA 842.This computer and it's problems are related in CH "computer software" ""problem with Sony Vaio Desktop" .
2.Besides the generous help from the CH forum members i could not have achieved the success i have now without the additional help of 2 web sites http://www.geekgirls.com/windowsxp_install.htm & http://www.le.ac.uk/cc/dsss/docs/w2kprob.shtml .
3. I now have a 3 partition 80gb H/D (Samsung) 2 C&D as FAT32 and a G as NTFS .
4.C contains the original O/S Win98se (upgrade) that finally got the computer running again and G contains the XP-pro (corporate edition).
5. I was initially getting a freeze at the "Windows Setup" again as i did in the other post i mentioned . This was the same problem that was occuring with the original Seagate H/D. This TIME i used a suggestion in the 'www.le.uk" site to press "F5" when the option to press "F6" comes up during the boot phase. This overcame the freeze and ALLOWED me to complete the O/S (XP-pro) install to a successful result.
6.While i have NOT yet attemted an install to a removable H/D given this experience i do not envisage a problem as as long as the removeable is plugged in and recognized one should be able to direct the O/S install there.
7. In this instance i had to format and create a file sysyem on the 44gb of the Samsung H/D that was recognized but not formated (G). Once both were done it was there that i installed the XP-pro.
8. The only item remaining to declare "mission accompished" is to regain the use of the 80gb Seagate H/D originally installed in the Vaio. Thanks again to all of you that endeavored to assist me in these related issues. truenorth

we all know bout Vista and for all OS, they have strengths n weakness...
i think vista has more weakness than STRENGTH cos security wise is still weak.
so, my point is that i fully want to know bout your opinions regarding the strengths and weaknesses, all y'all can think of!Vista is joining to my MAC tree, and I dislike (not hate) that tree.

For example, vista can't PLAY many games, can't run many programs but i'm sure those bugs will be fixed. It also seems to run slower and it uses up a lot of RAM.

I watched a video showing how similar it is to Apple's Mac. (i think Mac OS X).
MAYBE that's why it TOOK a short time to produce, Microsoft ran out of ideas so they had to copy Apple...

Ok I just got a laptop Toshiba Satellite A135-S2276 with vista ofcourse... I had a file that was .jar saposed to be a java prog. WINDOWS views it as a zip file... So i choose "open with" and DESELECT the "use this prog. all the time" and click ok.... WELL what do you know now all .jar .zip /unknown are reassociated to to java with no way to switch it back as i dont know what program is used to open .zip to begin with... I'm talking about the internal windows prog. i dont want to insall new software... thanx in adv.

Oh Yea, and right clicking on the .zip file doesn't give any extraction options, Way to go Vista!! Wahoo I'm so glad you cant buy a comp with XP anymore...Ok Well if no can help can some 1 lead me in the right dirrection, this is kinda a big problem for a new comp.... as it is I cant EVEN extract a file unless I installed a new program... Have you looked at MS's database for how to repair file associations in Vista ? ?Not just Firefox.

moving to drastic measures looks enevitable, any way to do a system restore like XPWhen you go to the properties of a compressed file and choose the change the file association, you don't see anything like Compressed (zipped) Folders?

Can't say how well, this will work, but you could give it a try...
1. Download vistazip.reg, and save it to your desktop.
2. Double-click the vistazip.reg file, and then click Continue, Yes, and then OK when prompted.
3. Restart Windows (the change won't take effect until you do).

I just got a Toshiba Satellite A135-s2276 500mb ram DUAL core 1.6ghz... I was surprised to find Mcaffe would survive on my comp for almost 24 hrs. I allways turn to your help for antivirus ect. So FAR there is nothing in the MS KB about it either.

If I was you I would wait until there is a SP2 of Vista before I would buy Vista.
We have 4 computers at home and ONE with Windows Vista home premium.
And the only-one that isn't able to print from a shared printer is the Vista PC.
Maybe it is because of me. But when I ask help on this forum no-one seems to have the answer.
Sow my opinion Just stay with XP till Vista SP2 arrives.

I'm a keen believer in holding off until at least SP2 arrives, but if you're buying from new, might as well get Vista, and then up-date for free, as opposed to buying Vista later...The more expensive outcome.

You also do have to remember that a perfect OS is IMPOSSIBLE.

Hey Jjbtcp, what are you going to use Vista for? If you are going to play games, Vista isn't the best choice.
Also, your printer might not work on Vista or most of your programs wont work.
I would advise you to wait for SP2 or just get an XP now.

Yes but the stupit thing about thatone is that its ONLY for Vista.
I still don't know why they did that.

My desktop background was black when i turned on thecomp. this morning. I can't seem to put up a picture even when I go into change desktop background. Nothing HAPPENS! PLEASE help!

I checked out my security and all is well and running. Seems I don't have a virus and the security runs DAILY checks.
I do have icons and am able to choose a color for the background, but when I browse for a picture and click nothing happensCheck all your connections with the power off including the monitor and the video card if you have one...

If you have icons but no background you may have the Smitfraud virus...list all the protection apps you currently have and when you ran them last.have checked all security and is running well. I can change a color on the desktop but not a picture. When I click the picutre icon noting happensQuote

There's about a 75% chance this is a driver issue...
