Solve : Invalid System Disk Error in Vista? |
Answer» Hey all, You normally get these type of errors because the hard drive is on its way out. I would back up your data and than shop for a new hard drive. This error appears to be a problem with the CD-ROM drive, not the hard disk. Since the issue is happening before boot, I think we can rule out virus. Here is what I would recommend: Unplug the computer completely, and remove the BIOS battery for 10 minutes. This will reset all its configuration data. For some reason, my brain is telling me that it could also be your IDE cable selections. I would double check and make sure that the RIGHT IDE is going to the CD drive. |

Solve : Aero problems? |
Answer» I have a Dell E1505 Laptop with a 256MB nVidia GeForce Go 7300 (Which, since its using the Turbo Cache, really has 357MB RAM) Zylstra...Yes The last thing I did was change a value in the registry, I also restored that. I restored to around the point before I noticed the problem, and again, today, I also restored back to the last Windows update. Still no dice. Maybe your computer is not detecting enough RAM to use it, and it turned it off.Quote from: CompGuy17 on July 21, 2007, 05:30:07 PM Maybe your computer is not detecting enough RAM to use it, and it turned it off.I cant see that as being a problem, it seems that everything is "OK" and usually, it tells you when you are LOW on RAM and its going to disable the special features. True.... have you checked all the display options in the control panel?I dont KNOW how, but I fixed it!!! I just sat and messed around with my nVidia settings, and then ran my expirenece index check again. I noticed that, while I was playing the Sims 2, I was unable to adjust my edge smoothness... so I figured it had to be that I did something wrong the last time I configured the nVidia controls. Well, after messing around again, and then running the expirenece index, it seemed to start working again... Zylstra... I know you've resolved your problem, but have you had a look at this page? Troubleshoot Problems With Windows AeroQuote from: The Saviour on July 22, 2007, 05:14:59 AM Zylstra...Nope, I didn't, but Ill add that to my Solutions for the Future list |

Solve : Wireless Network Search? |
Answer» My brother-in-law's work laptop (IBM ThinkPad with Centrino Mobile) has Windows 2000 but does not appear to have any way of searching for a wireless network. The wireless network we have set up at home works fine but for that to be so I had to enter the information in the wireless card's PROPERTIES (SSID and such) but that limits it to home use. Is there something missing here or anything to download for a wireless network search tool? I know my computer with Windows XP has it...it looks like a little computer with three lines next to it.In your System Tray (very bottom right hand SIDE next to the clock) |

Solve : XP choice disappeared on Multiple boot menu? |
Answer» Hi all, I have a major problem on my computer and been looking around for help. I'm new here and hopefully I can find some answers to my problem. THanks. Then I have decided to install VISTA business as a multiple OS system. I used Partition Magic to create another primary partition This is where it went wrong...you can only have one active partition per physical drive. Had you left it as an extended partition you would have been fine. This is a gamble but you may have to start over anyways so the tradeoff is in your favor: using Partition Magic change D: (where the XP install is) back to active. Save the changes and re-boot If you are lucky when you restart you will be presented with the dual-boot menu choice. Best of Luck to You. p.s. Just thought of this ...since the partitions were changed prior to the Vista install this probably will not work...however if XP loads properly all you have left to do is re-install Vista so it's still worth it. |

Solve : Restart? |
Answer» I have a one day old computer with Vista on it and no matter how I try to restart my computer, it won't. It goes through the logging off screen and all of that but all that HAPPENS is my monitor turns off but the actual pc stays on. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks. Now, I know its new and everything, but: Sounds like I got the shaft on this one. I can get it to restart occasionally if I manually press the button but that doesn't work all the time. This can cause damage to the hard DRIVE, and I wouldn't recommend it in case they decide to void your warranty for damage of this sort. |

Solve : any way to restore this backup?? |
Answer» IM using vista ultimate x64. i have 3 HARD drives - an 80gb, a 100gb, and a 500gb. i DECIDED to try out dynamic drives today, and ended up rendering my system drive (the 100gb one) unbootable. "no problem", i thought, "i'll just install vista again on the 80gb hard drive, make a backup of the one that doesnt work, convert the 100gb drive back to basic, and restore the image." i have now converted it back to basic, only to find that i can't restore the backup that i made. i used a program caleld r-drive, and it made a .arc file which is on the 500gb dynamic disk. the program can mount the drive and i can see all the contents, but when i try to do a real restore i GET a write error. can i somehow either restore the whole backup or rescue all my programs by putting them in this second vista installation (which is on the 80gb basic partition)?Couple of questions for you: (1) So the 100G messed up and you "converted it back to basic". What do you mean by this? (2) What software do you use to restore/backup this drive? This can make a difference. i had converted it to a "dynamic disk" using windows disk management. this is what broke it. i changed it back to a "basic disk" after i made the backup, hoping to restore it. i used a program called r-drive, and it made a .arc file (i know i shouldve used a better program, but i cant change that now).if you are trying to restore the operating system to the disk that the dynamic overlay was set on you cannot because the overlay is still there. dynamic drive is a method of creating an software overlay on a hard drive, you must remove that overlay, download swiss knife from here:- http://www.compuapps.com/download/Swissknife/swissknife.htm format in order to remove the overlay, then try to recover the image that you created. dynamic drive overlay was originally invented to allow a hard drive of overlarge proportions to be seen in older BIOS motherboards. |

Solve : BIOS Password being re-set what to expect? |
Answer» I have to send my laptop back to The manufacturer to have the BIOS PASSWORD re-set. I've already TRIED every other solution and came up empty. I just want to know what i can expect from my laptop when i get it back will it be like it was or will they have to re-install Vista. It was a stupid mistake on my part after a improper shut down that caused this problem a problem i had never heard of before. I couldn't get the technichians to give me a whole lot of info about what to epect makes a LIL leery about sending it off but i'm gonna anyway. First off, this software will most likely not work on a laptop, but there is a chance if your BIOS is on the list. Read all the warnings too. On laptops, the password is usually stored in an eeprom on the motherboard, http://www.softpedia.com/get/Security/Decrypting-Decoding/CmosPwd.shtml That link also has some information regarding passwords that certain BIOSs will always ACCEPT. Perhaps this may be of no help to you but others may benefit if they are in a similar situation. Vista shouldn't have to be reinstalled in most cases, depending of the severity of the problem. Try asking the techies again, see if you can get any more info that may help you understand what's going on. |

Solve : Vista/XP Dual Boot Problems? |
Answer» I recently bought a new HP dv9339 notebook PC with Vista HOME pre-installed. There's tons to hate about Vista, but I do acknowledge that it's probably what I'll want to use for some applications (if not all, eventually). With that in mind, I created a new partition, turned off SATA support (necessary for installing XP), and installed XP Pro. Since HP doesn't support XP any more, I had to search for a lot of the drivers I needed, Where do you get this info from ? ? ? This topic is one month old... |

Solve : 2 questions: windows vista, and burnt-out hard drive memory saving? |
Answer» My PC computer with xp started crashing. Is an acer aspire 5000. Might have been a virus. Regardless, at this point, I am trying to get all info off the puter. I tried using a CD -- it will not recognize the CD as something to be copied to. I came home with the wrong product when I tried to find a usb to usb cable to see if that would work, so might try that soon if answer still not found. I ALSO had a San Disk cruzer external small usb memory thing of 512 mb.... I just tried it, and it did work at first. I was able to transfer one folder over to my other computer. |

Solve : flash player doesnt work with vista? |
Answer» i have a hp m7674n running the upgrade version of vista. my problem is with my flash player. it wont install. when i try to run videos it says i either have flash turned off or an old version. when i try to download the newest version. it doesnt install. i tried using the MACROMEDIA un-installer and starting from scratch but it still doesnt work. the flash player worked fine for about a MONTH after i installed vista...but now it doesnt work or install. ive spent several hours online with a tech from hp and they just keep having me reinstall it and pretty much cant figure out why it doesnt work. has anyone else had this problem? where should i go from here? it sucks having this great computer with no flash player. update....ive been working on this issue again for another couple of wasted hours. ive un-installed using a different uninstaller and re-installed from another link. still nothing works. i noticed this...and this seemes like the problem. i go the the tools tab on internet explorer, hit ie options...general tab...settingss...view objects....shockwave flash objects...properties...dependancy tab and then i see "filename * and size damaged" obviously the file is damaged...but why wont it completely uninstall so i can install a new undamaged version? ive tried the uninstaller from the adobe website and anotherone i found on the net, tried re-installing it only to find the same damaged message and the same error messages when i try to run flash. ive noticed from the net that this is a COMMON problem that adobe and microsoft are working on. in the meantime ive got a $2k computer thats worth nothing on the internet without a working flash player...any suggestions or anyone else dealing with this problem? Sorry, I've not had this problem... Have you tried booting into safemode to uninstall the software, or to manually delete the damaged file yourself?have you tried this fix? have you tried this fix?tried it and it doesnt work....i think the problem is because the other versions wont completely remove using the uninstallers...i cant get a clean new version to install. "Have you tried booting into safemode to uninstall the software, or to manually delete the damaged file yourself?" how would i go about doing this? would this remove all versions and traces of flashplayer? at this point ill try anythingDownload the Slim version of CCleaner and run it's Issues scan. To start CCleaner with Windows Vista, right click on it and select "Run as administrator". CCleaner will ask whether you want to backup your registry; do so. Then, run then remove all the items it found. Repeat the scan; it may find ADDITIONAL items; delete them also. Repeat the Issues scan until it finds no items. Now, try installing Flash player. tried the sscleanr...great program, got rid of a lot of stuff i didnt need. but didnt help my flash problem. You could post your issue in the Adobe forum on Flash Player: http://www.adobe.com/cfusion/webforums/forum/categories.cfm?catid=184&forumid=44 well...i learned from the adobe flash forum, that a lot of people have this problem. there a few fixes that work for some people. none worked for me. however i did realize i could just switch web browsers and flash and everything works just fine. so i swithsed to mozilla firefox. the downlaod was free and easy and the download for flash works great now. apparantly the problem is with internet explorer 7 and flash player...there are several security and download problems that both companies have not figured out yet....so my advice is switch to mozilla firefox or netscape navigator for your browser and dont waste your TIME trying to figure out why your flash player doesnt work like i did (for over a month..with no solution untill now) thanks to anyone that offered help and i hope this is usefull to anyone that just wants to watch some youtube. peace |

Solve : SATA driver file names and locations?? |
Answer» Hi everyone. A problem has been detected ...Have you tried rolling back the SATA driver? You should be able to find the correct drivers at the drive manuf. site... Or check your MBoard driver disc.Quote from: The SAVIOUR on August 18, 2007, 07:18:20 AM Have you tried rolling back the SATA driver?Read the first post. System won't boot, period. I don't have a vista install DVD to fix it with. It didn't come with a mobo driver disc either. Ok, I've determined that the first file I need to replace is crcdisk.sys after some more google-searching. It's the last file that's listed when I boot in safe mode before it crashes. If it still crashes I'll boot it in safe mode again and repeat the above step (hopefully the last file being a different one)Quote It didn't come with a mobo driver disc either. Visit the board manuf. site...I was getting the drivers from the recovery partition, technically, those should work. I don't need to download the drivers. I just need to know which of the bazillions of *.sys files in /windows/system32/drivers are the ones I need to be replacing. Well i'm not sure what you're saying because re-installing the SATA driver would cure this issue... But if you insist on doing it file by file well have fun...I can't reinstall it because the system doesn't boot. Not in safe mode. Not in any mode. Not at all. I don't have a Vista install DVD to use. The only way I can think of to recover this system without having to reflash the whole disk is to replace the driver, file by file. |

Solve : Replacing windows vista Spanish language version? |
Answer» COULD someone please advise me the best way to replace Spanish language version of windows vista home premium with the English version? I understand upgrading to Ultimate allows this , but would it be cheaper to buy the English version and how easy is it to install. thankyouDid you go to the Control Panel and open the Icon Regional and Language Options?Hi Haycg, Thanks for your reply. I have tried that and it doesn´t work. All the languages are listed but there is no difference when SELECTING them. I have been told once the preferred language is selected you cannot change it, the list is there, but something is removed in the process to stop you changing . ALSO I think you need to upgrade to Ultimate or higher to have this facility. I am trying to find the best solution. As far as I know you can't change the language of windows . I.e. if you buy a Spanish version, all menus are going to be in Spanish no matter what regional settings you choose. For example I've got an English version of XP, but my REGION and input settings are set to Danish. I still get all menus, help files, etc in English (the way I like it). So again as far as I know (I MIGHT be wrong) you'll need an English version of Vista in order to get English. Although an English upgrade disc might work as well. |

Solve : File Count In Vista Windows Explorer? |

Answer» I upgraded from '98 to Vista. In '98, when USING Windows Explorer, you would get a total NUMBER of files within a folder displayed in the lower left-hand corner under your main list of folders. Vista doesn't have that. Solve : reinstalling vista? |

Answer» I changed motherboards from a GIGABYTE 965P-S3 to a ECS NFG650iSLIT-A. Before I changed the boards I had vista already installed. After I changed to the new board I turned it on and a message said I needed to repair windows. So I PUT the dvd in and TOLD the board the boot from the dvd. I tried the repair thing and it didn't find anything to fix. I tried the system restore back to the earliest DATE, but that didn't do anything. I ran the memory test. I didn't have any memory errors. What should I do now? Should I just try to install Vista LIKE I did the first time? |

Solve : How do I Install Win XP in a Laptop that Came with Vista?? |
Answer» HP Special Edition L2100 HP Pavilion dv5100 Compaq Presario C300 This Laptop came with WIN Vista installed, we do not want to use vista, so we tried to install Win Xp that we feel comfortable with, but we just cant it wont let us install. Does any one have any idea how we can do that, if possible can you provide the necessary steps on how to go about this? TanksWhat do you mean by it doesn't let you install? How far do you come in the install procedure before it refuses to go any further? You might not have properly supported drivers, this would be a common problem with downgrading Did you see any errors? What exactly is preventing you from wanting to use Vista? Many of its features can be reversed to looking like XPQuote from: lino124 on July 13, 2007, 12:52:36 PM HP Special Edition L2100 Whenever you downgrade you'll have to trick the computer into thinking you don't have the newer OS installed anymore. You can either delete all the files in the windows directory, or you can wipe the contents of the disk with a format and start fresh, which is your best bet. You'll need to boot from the XP disc itself instead of trying to run it from within windows. As has already been STATED though, if your complaints are purely aesthetic, most EVERYTHING can be reverted to look like XP (or even earlier). |

Solve : visa- shutdown problems? |
Answer» I just purchased a new computer that has VISTA on it about a month or so ago. With-in the past WEEK or so, i have had problems with shutting the computer down. Everytime I shut the computer down, the computer restarts. I have searched for solutions to this problem, but havent found anything that fixes it. Any help on here would be greatly appreciated, as I am so lost when it COMES to using Vista. You might want to try dis-abling ACPI in the BIOS to see if this remedies the situation...if you are unfamiliar with using SETUP ask someone who knows the ins and outs of the BIOS. |

Solve : Vista .zip help / file association? |
Answer» Ok I just got a laptop Toshiba Satellite A135-S2276 with vista ofcourse... I had a file that was .jar saposed to be a java prog. WINDOWS views it as a zip file... So i choose "open with" and DESELECT the "use this prog. all the time" and click ok.... WELL what do you know now all .jar .zip /unknown are reassociated to to java with no way to switch it back as i dont know what program is used to open .zip to begin with... I'm talking about the internal windows prog. i dont want to insall new software... thanx in adv. To access file associations, go Control Panel->Programs->Default Programs->Set Associations. From The MS database...I talked to Toshiba and they advised me to do a system restore, after fixing the problem .zip didn't show up in Control Panel->Programs->Default Programs->Set Associations. thanx for the time everyone...So you trust Toshiba more than the braintrust here....i see how you are. |

Solve : Antivirus for vista? |
Answer» Im sure many have asked this I tried a search and got a bunch of meaningless bull... You might wish to try AVG Free Anti-virus...... it's Vista compatible and easy to turn on and off. I installed and did the updates but theres no on/off jumping out at me just "quit avg control center" and then it says if i turn off control center i wont have control of avg??? Double-clicking the tray icon opens the AVG Control Panel...there are 2 views normal and advanced...from there you can set your schedule for when it should run/update. Mine updates at 4 AM and scans at 5 AM. I never see it and it does it's job seamlessly, just what i want out of a program.Ok but what I meant by on/off is I only have INTERNET when im at a hot-spot. Do I really need antivirus running all the time? AVG does SEEM to run quite smoothly though... No reason not to. You only have to have a few moments connected to an insecure network..... |

Solve : Vista standard user controls inoperative? |
Answer» I am the administrator for my laptop. I wanted to take advantage of UAC for my son, blocking downloads, but when I finish setting up his controls, I get a solid, steady, blue screen, until I finally HIT ctr/alt/delete - otherwise I'd be in limbo forever. Is there something goofed up in the OS? Do I have a hidden bug somewhere? I have Norton 360 installed. I don't WANT to be forced to take my laptop to the Geek Squad or some other place that will charge me $100+ for a simple fix. Or do I? HELP! Ginny Welcome Aboard first of all... |

Solve : Vista, XP Home or XP Pro? |
Answer» Even though I haven't personally used Vista, I have heard it isn't much good. I currently have XP Home, Should I stay with XP Home or get XP Professional? Yes but if you need the things that are not yet ready you have a problem. (there are not much problems but Networking is one of them.) I'll give one of my secrets away: Firefox has a built in spell-checker. And if someone has a problem with you d/l Firefox, they are an idiot. The PC I'm using now is my mothers PC and it barely run with only IE 6 open. Sow If I install something else it will not work at all. You know what I mean. Jonas OMG you guys are actually saying Vista is better than XP!!!!! Hey Jjbtcp, what are you going to use Vista for? If you are going to play games, Vista isn't the best choice. Also, your printer might not work on Vista or most of your programs wont work. I would advise you to wait for SP2 or just get an XP now.Thats what I was trying to TELL whole the time. Thaks for your reply. Jonas I think I'm also right when I'm saying that XP prof is the best choise isn't it CD? I do want to say that Counterstrike Source works fine on Vista. But there are a bounche of game that doesn't. Jonas There is Halo 2 for vistaYes but the stupit thing about thatone is that its ONLY for Vista. I still don't know why they did that. Jonas Quote from: Carbon Dudeoxide on May 12, 2007, 09:11:33 AM OMG you guys are actually saying Vista is better than XP!!!!! My point is more: Why have a new machine with XP, and then pay to upgrade to Vista apres SP2 (or whatever they end up calling it)? If it were a simple upgrade, I'd hold fire, but if you're getting it free, might as well have the newer one...unless you specifically need the older one.Quote from: Jonas Wauters on May 12, 2007, 10:04:55 AM Yes but the stupit thing about thatone is that its ONLY for Vista. ...To sell Vista...This is a rambling mess of a thread. Jonas, I don't understand your need to answer every thread on the board and then end your response with "but I don't know". If you don't know, don't type anything. Just read. Yes but I always have something to add. But I'm never very sure of the things I say I don't want to have that someones PC crashes because I said that I was sure. I'm saying that so someone with more knowledge can confirm my info. Jonas Quote from: GX1_Man on May 12, 2007, 12:39:02 PM This is a rambling mess of a thread. No information is better than bad information. Think about it.Yes but did I said something that wasn't true? I will stop sending post if its annoying you. But the last two months I've learned much at this forum and I'm Learning new things every day. Jonas It's great to learn, but you need to know before you try to teach.OK but the thing I say are things who are allready sayed on this forum. Thanks for explaining. I'll wait to send a new reply untill I know for shure. Jonas Quote My point is more:I'm probably not even going to get Vista... |

Solve : Rare Blue Screen of Dead ---- Window XP? |
Answer» www.memtest86.comNo problem with the Memory after testing by "WINDOW Memory Diagnositc" for overnight. Passed all standard and extended tests. Any reliable freeware to test the motherboard and power supply? Quote My computer will reboot itself about once every hour, giving me blue screen of death and the following error message : Within that hour, does the PC run correctly? If so, it might be the temperture. Perhaps it just need a cleaning. Also check the heat sink where it mates with the CPU, make sure it has good contact with the CPU. Just a thought. B.Yes, the PC runs correctly before turning blue. I have cleaned the dirt covered the heat sink and fans, but I still got the problem. I also suspect that it should be the graphic part, as when I changed the resolution to 640 x 480, it works fine. Everything above that resolution would render the same error message. I tried to download and install the latest driver of the graphic card : ATI Raedon 9250 (128mb), but got the same error when set to a higher resolution 1280 x 1024 - 32 bit - 75Hertz refresh rate. I USED to set this resolution before the problem turned up and it was alright.Quote from: patio on April 11, 2007, 02:13:35 AM There's about a 75% chance this is a driver issue... I would double-check the video card and un-install the DRIVERS you have currently and re- install the native drivers that came with the card....sometimes newer drivers are not always better drivers...Well, did as advised, un-installed the driver, used original driver came with the card, but still no luck. Same error message. So far confirmed no problem with the Ram, Video Card, Hard disks, Power Supply. Bios updated to the latest, Reformat and Reinstall Windows XP sp2. What else is missing…. the motherboard, any good shareware to check the motherboard? Sorry, to recap my problem. The error message I got from BOD is: Stop: 0X0000008E (0XC0000005, 0XBF80554E, 0XF7626B0C, 0X00000000) Win32K.SYS – Address BF80554E base at BF800000, Date Stamp 45f13f6. The attached diagram is my System information of Display card, do you think the address in the display card is within the Error address area? [old attachment deleted by admin]Windows says this is a driver issue ( i stated this in post #3 ) Since we have ruled out the other culprits such as bad RAM; power etc. then you need to narrow it down further... Directly From the MothershipDone everything as advised. Run Extended Ram Test overnight returned no error. Even after updating to latest video driver, uninstall Spy Sweeper but still had no luck and continued getting the win32k.sys blue screen. I now attach 3 latest minidump files of the recent crashs, hope anyone can get some clue out of them. Thanks a lot. [cleaning up - attachment deleted by admin]After one month lapsed, I have finally solved the problem of BOSD - by disabling the 'HYDRID BOOSTER" in my Bios setup ! The result, I think all of you know, is causing obvious slow-down of the computer. This is the suffer I have to take because nothing I can do after making all those necessary efforts. Thanks for everyone for HELPING me. If you have better advice, i.e. ways to speed up the computer after disabled Hydrid, please send me a note. |
