Solve : Can not access any form of the internet with Windows Vista.? |
Answer» My internet has been working fine. Then all of the sudden last night i was disconnected from a game I play and unable to get back on. I then noticed I could not get on the internet either. Everytime I open explorer it tried to GO to some searchicq webpage. I spent a total of 3 hrs and 35 mins on the phone last night with my internet service provider and HP. They couldn't figure it out. My status report shows My puter is connected to the network, but the network won't connect to the internet. I am not very computer savvy, so bear with me if I question your responses. I've tried everything anyone I talked to could come up with except a complete recovery. One of my friends told me today it could be a virus. I don't know anything about viruses. I am strictly a gamer who plays a lot of Ultima Online, so I'm not sure where I would have got a virus. Can someone HELP me out PLEASE?DOWNLOAD HijackThis: |

Solve : Installed Vista now computer wont turn on.? |
Answer» I RECENTLY installed Windows Vista on my Media Center PC. It worked for a few days with no problems at all. One day I turned on my tower and nothing happend. The power light came on, and the FANS made noise but the keyboard would not turn on and the screen did nothing. I have a FEELING this could be a HARDWARE issue, but because I installed Vista, that could be the reason. |

Solve : Problems with AutoComplete? |
Answer» Hello All, My problem is, I can't for the life of me get AutoComplete to work. I've tried going through the Control Panel>Internet Options>Content & have ticked all the boxes, but it still won't prompt me when filling in forms etc.You meant Control Panel>Internet Options>Advanced, right? And you have the box for "Use inline Auto-Complete" CHECKED, right?Quote from: Duh! on November 05, 2007, 11:08:38 AM How much memory does that laptop have? Hello Soybean, Thanks for replying so quickly. I hadn't gone to Advanced, but I followed what you said & the box is ticked. I just checked "Computer" & it says 0.99GB - I'm assuming that's what you mean? I picked my username carefully - Duh! It just describes my PC abilities to a tee!!Bump - Soybean? Anyone...?Try un-installing the google toolbar and see if it works...Quote Also, maybe totally unrelated & possibly something more serious (or just normal for Vista). A few times an hour, I'll get what I can only describe as a blink. The screen goes blank for a second - it's almost like when you blink slowly. The screen also goes black for a second before the screensaver comes on. Is this bad news or something normal? I never noticed it on XP.This may be related to some Power Options settings. When I reinstalled Vista, and I forgot to check Power Options, it was HAPPENING to me (although more frequently), until I switched to "High Performance" option.Broni - I tried that, thanks. It hasn't made a difference, though. Patio - does it make a difference that it's only installed on Firefox? Is this the same as the Google desktop that came with the laptop? Is it turned on in Google toolbar Preferences?Hi Broni, The Autofill box is ticked on the Google Toolbar (it even has all my info in the settings). Solve : Vista and Spam? |
Answer» HI all, I'm running Vista with Norton 360 but I'm still getting an awful lot of spam. Can anyone recommend a spamkiller that will run with Vista? Thanks v much! First, don't provide your MAIN email ADDRESS everywhere you can. To start with, most email programs have built-in spam filters. What email program are you using? Also, log on to your email via your web browser, if possible, and see whether your ISP provides you some options for weeding out spam BEFORE you download mail to your computer. Thanks for the info. I'm running OutlookAgain, can you access your email via a WEBMAIL interface, i.e. via your web browser? Many ISP's provide that capability even if you download your email to Outlook or Outlook Express. I was an Earthlink USER until a forced change in ISP about 5 months ago. With Earthlink, I used Outlook Express to receive POP mail, but I could also access my mail by going to Earthlink.net and logging onto WebMail. And, Earthlink provided options to control spam BEFORE it got to my computer when I downloaded to Outlook Express. You should find out whether your ISP offers such features. They may have it, and you're just not aware of it. And, regarding Outlook, is some junk mail going to Outlook's Junk E-mail folder? |

I am in fact logged in but in the original window. The only way I know to view this is through firefox.Opening it in a new Window shouldn't affect it, because you are still logged in and your cookies are still there. Solve : Keeping Folders and Files Organized--By Name? |
Answer» I'm in the process of cleaning up my folders and FILES in Windows XP in preparation for a switch to Vista. In most cases I want to organize folders/files by Name; however, in certain folders I want THINGS to be organized non-alphabetically. The process I use is to simply open the folders and drag/drop icons in my preferred viewing order. I've noticed that in a few cases when I go back to look at the contents of a folder I've reorganized, Windows has kindly rearranged things back to alphabetically by Name. |

Solve : Vista won't boot? |
Answer» I'm not sure if this should be posted here or under hardware. Anyways, my sister has a Compaq Presario C501NR notebook with Vista Home Basic. RECENTLY it has stopped booting. At first it gave me an error that the file ntdll.dll was corrupt. I tried using the HP Recovery Manager, but was unsuccessful. I then ordered the recovery disc from HP. After receiving the disk I put the disk in the DRIVE and it booted up to the HP Recovery Manager. It reformatted the hard drive, created a partition for a recovery image and then installed the image on the drive. It said to restart the computer and then press F11 to complete the process. This is where I run into problems. Pressing F11 doesn't do anything except beep. As it attempts to boot it gives me the error 0xc00000e9 stating that there is a problem COMMUNICATING with a device. In the BIOS I ran a test on the hard drive. After about 15 seconds it says "#1 - 07 Fail." I have tried everything I know, but as I am a programmer and don't deal with hardware that much, I don't know what to do next. Any help would be great.Sounds like the harddrive has failed. Before running out and purchasing a new one, however, try this first: |

Solve : Will it happen again??? I hope not!!!? |
Answer» This is the first time my computer has not successfully unhibernated. When I try to start it now, the screen does not turn on anything, or is black (cannot tell). The laptop makes no sound, except after a few minutes, the fan gets louder, as if the CPU is being completely used. I tried unplugging it and removing the battery a few times, but it will still not restart. I tried pressing F2, Esc, CTrl+Alt+Del, SysRq, and Del but nothing happens, but I think the BIOS should respond to one of these after I unplug the computer and restart it. This is a 6-month old HP laptop.Send it back to avoid even more problems in the future. It was working fine when I hibernated it, so I don't think this is a hardware issue. If I do have to send it in, will I get all my data back? How long will this take? What I'm trying to say is, that unless you made some serious changes to your laptop configuration (hardware/software), and your laptop doesn't work after 6 months of USE, I'd return it right away.I know what you mean; if this happens again in another 6 months, right when my warranty expires, it will be bad. But I thought this was maybe a software bug that would be easy to fix even if it does happen again. I contacted HP through live chat, and they said I can send the laptop in free to get it fixed (because of warranty). They think it is a hardware issue; I guess they'll find out. I actually think I can survive without that laptop for a week. I think, this is the best option. On about the tenth try, the laptop started up just fine. I did something like turn laptop on, wait, unplug (AC + battery), repeat, wait, ask HP, POWER drain, re-seat memory, power on, wait, not starting still, unplug, power on, unplug, repeat, give up, come back an HOUR later, power on, Vista un-hibernates. As you can see from this list of events, unplugging the laptop did not affect Vista at all! If Vista had been running when I unplugged it, it would have crashed and restarted, not un-hibernated. So Vista was not loading when the laptop was not working, so maybe the BIOS was not working right. Has this happened to anyone before? Is this a one-time bug, or could this be a big problem in the future? If it doesn't happen again soon, can I assume it is working well? Quote from: Broni on November 26, 2007, 04:35:17 PM What I'm trying to say is, that unless you made some serious changes to your laptop configuration (hardware/software), and your laptop doesn't work after 6 months of use, I'd return it right away. This is still your best option...don't change your mind because you were able to "fix" it once. You have an intermittent problem which are the toughest to diagnose and HP is probably correct in assuming it is a hardware issue...After a bit more testing, I sent the laptop into HP, and it just came back today. One complaint I have, the laptop screen is very dirty now and will have to be wiped clean a bit. It came back with a paper that says: Problem description: replace mlbTP Parts replaced: 6K.4C0MB.001 (SHIBA 12MB FF PAV 05234-4 6L W/O C&D) I have no idea what that means they replaced!! Does anyone know? Thanks for posting back mlbTP? No CLUE...Call HP. I want to know, too.At first i assumed a MBoard chip...but could find no data on it. Could possibly be their own part # system .... Glad to hear you got it solved.Hi. I just had time tonight to contact HP. Quote Vincent: Hello Kristopher I wish HP could have kept the LCD screen a bit cleaner, but at least I didn't have to pay for a new motherboard! WOW! Mystery solved.... Thanks for posting back |

Solve : XP Recovery Console.? |
Answer» Recovery Console Password A great up front tip. Suggest it be made a sticky or given a prominent place in the the FAQ. I've SOMETIMES thought that CH should have a sticky or FAQ to SHOW users how to prepare for their pc failing to boot or crashing etc.. Things like the Restore Console password Regedit, having a Bootdisk such as NTFS4DOS (and/or The Ultimate Boot CD), a bootdisk with Delpart etc... so that when things go wrong some preparation has been made and a software toolkit is to hand. The list could include their hdd manufacturer's diagnostic pack and Memtest86. But then maybe having the toolkit would cause more problems than it would solve. I really haven't come to a conclusion. Solve : IE7 shutting down all the time? |
Answer» I have installed IE7 but every time I open a link in a new page and then close the new page, IE closes then reopens itself to my home page. It also closes down without warning when I'm SURFING the net. Any ideas? I am using Windows XP. Have tried to download Firefox but IE closes down the minute I click on "Run". A window pops up with the message "Internet Explorer raised unhandled exception in the third part module and should be closed.", I click on 'close' in that box and all windows close down and IE opens itself up again at my homepage. netscape should avoid that problem to download, click http://ftp.netscape.com/pub/netscape9/en-US/9.0/windows/win32/netscape-navigator-9.0.0.4.exeQuote netscape should avoid that problemNetscape is not a GOOD browser, since taken over by AOL. Robyn See, if same thing happens in Safe Mode.Quote from: Broni on December 09, 2007, 09:05:47 AM Quoteok.., sorry for bad post then Thanks for your help, what do i do to try it in safe mode? When your COMPUTER starts, keep tapping F8 key.netscape should avoid that problemNetscape is not a good browser, since taken over by AOL. Choose "Safe Mode with Networking ".I THINK IE7 for xp is similar if not exactly same as ie7 for vista. I use vista but hopefully this will help. On toolbar menu where you see "File", "Edit", "Favorites", etc. Click on tools. Then click Internet Options, then advanced, then reset. Resetting IE7 will reset IE7 to manufacturer's settings. (i.e., the way it was before you even touched ie7) Maybe that will fix your problem. But cookies, favorites, home page settings, etc will be reset so you might lose your stuff. This has fixed problem for me before so give it a shot. good luck.Thank you everyone for all your help! Problem sorted Thanks, RobynMay we know, how? Thanks again everyone. I opened it in safe mode as advised, all was fine. then I reset it as elxr06 suggested, I did lose my favourites and home page setting, but that was a small price to pay. All working now, thanks everyone for all your help Robyn |

Solve : Can I copy a CD to my computer so I can burn a copy?? |
Answer» Is it possible to burn a CD with having 2 CD roms? I'm wondering if there is a way to copy itself to the computer, remove it and then insert a blank CD and burn it BACK. Not sur eif Windows does this or if SHAREWARE is NEEDED. YES. Windows will ask you for blank CD, when it's done with copying original CD to hard drive.I do not have windows here at work. How do I initiate this, under tools? or control panel? In Vista, if you right-click the CD drive in My Computer, there's an option to copy. I haven't USED XP in a couple of years but I'm thinking there's something similar. |

Solve : Forgot my password to logon? |
Answer» my little brother kept getting on my computer at my dads when i was there so i changed my password and i changed the admin password also so he couldt hack into it again... i forgot what it was because it was a long sequence of numbers though i dont remember which ones... how can i GET back on to change it back?Re-install OS while SAVING old files, use NEW PW? Yes you do need to enter the admin password to login as administrator in safe mode. If you're not getting asked a password when logging in this means you haven't set a password for your admin account.Which OS are you using? Is there another account you can use to change the admin password?im using win xp i thik home im not sure about that part though, there is one other account on there but its not adminJust to clarify things... It doesn't have to be the Administrator account specifically, just a member of the Administrators group.no i mean the account doesnt have admin privilages.I'd use Deerpark's first method then, I've used bootdisks before on other people's machines. So how can I do it if I do have admin priviliges then because I think I remember it now but I need to change the admin pass back incase i forget again |

Solve : windows\system32\cmd.exe - access denied.? |
Answer» I got a new computer, against my better judgement. It is an emachine with Vista. I just got it LAST NIGHT. Everytime I restart my computer, and the desktop opens, a black window POPS up that says "windows\system32\cmd.exe" then inside the black window, it says access denied twice, then it closes. What is this? McAfee says my PC is fine. Please help me.If you've only just bought it, I SUGGEST going back to the PLACE you bought it fromnickc1976 is right. You shouldn't have problems right out of the box. Don't invest any time or EFFORT on this. |

Solve : Directx 10 ??? |
Answer» Can anyone TELL me if DirectX 10 is out yet, if so can someone give me a link. I cannot find it anywhere.DX10 has been out since January, and actually before that if you count the Vista BETAS. But if you have XP you can't get it.DirectX 10 is only for vista. It's pointless right now because not many games support it. Even if you could get it for XP, your video hardware probably doesn't support it.Thanks but i already know that Direct x 10 is for Vista only, I have Vista. My new computer also supports it. My post was to ask for a direct link to Directx 10. I have tried the Directx home page as WELL as GOOGLING for it. The problem is everytime i go to download it, it says its Directx 9c. Can some one give me a link!Vista shipped with DX10. Run DXDIAG to verify that you already have it.There is NO direct download for DirectX 10. As Anodoin said, it COMES with Vista.Possibly an "ahem" version of Vista here ? ?I keep forgetting....Thanks, it is already installed I checked it using Dxdiag. |

Solve : Vista Home unresponsive taskbar!! HELP? |
Answer» Im having a problem with windows vista home edition. When it loads up the desktop the taskbar is unresponsive and I can't click on anything there. I can still click on icons on the desktop but if I try to execute it, nothing will happen. Also the gadgets don't seem to load up. I really need HELP because this happens way too much and I have to restart my laptop more than once sometimes to get it to WORK. The start button will work for the first minute or soIn Safe, or Normal Mode? Sorry meant to say normal. Safe mode works fine.Quote Did it just start happening? Any recent hardware/software changes?I may have more suggestions, but I need to know the above answers. It started happening a few days after I got the laptop. I haven't made any hardware changes. The only software change I made was installing Etrust security suite and I think that should be it. Good thinking. Disable it from startup, or eventually uninstall. Thanks for your help Broni, but I need it. It is my firewall/antivirus/ and so on. It actually works pretty WELL, thats why I use it instead of Mcafee. No, you don't. Surely, you need firewall, and antivirus, but there are free programs, you can use, and which I use. There is no reason to pay for them. I assume, you already paid for Etrust, so in that event, just disable it for one computer start, and see, if your problem persist. From your picture, it's definitely software problem.Ok thanks broni I'll disable and see what happens.Cool, let me know. |
