I went to download some torrent movies using bittorrent and i left the laptop on. In the middle of the night, I hear a loud alarm from my PC. I turned off the sound but i found out it came from my pc. I quickly powered it off to shut it up without seeing what was on the screen. Went back to bed.

Next day i turned on the pc and it was loading all good until it got to the desktop part. Everything was black with this one prompt

"Fehler beim Setzen der Dat en fur Windows Update"

I opened up the TASK mananger and there was no applications running. It seemed like a whole LOT of servicesc was added though.

Then i just gave in and restored to a COUPLE days back, but the problem started again (maybe because of my backup)

Then i restored it again, and here i am.
If it happens again, i will take pics and vids of it for a clearer analysisGo to Panda software and run the online virus scan/killer. Then when the virus is dead, download a new free AVG from grisoft.com, and visit Windows Update.com

My internet has been working fine. Then all of the sudden last night i was disconnected from a game I play and unable to get back on. I then noticed I could not get on the internet either. I am using puter at work to post these.If you have a USB stick, or you're able to burn CD's at your work, download the program, save it on your USB stick (or burn on a CD), and install it on your computer @ home.

Than save the HijackThis log onto the USB stick (or burn on a CD) and post it when you're back at work, or maybe you can use a friend's pc who has internet access.

It's a kind of a workaround, and with the weekend coming, and Christmas, I don't know when you'll be able to post the log, but it REALLY helps us to figure out what the problem is.

Hello everyone.

Having a bit of a problem with a slightly older video card and Vista. Before I begin, what I'm trying to accomplish is the installation of a secondary video card to run my extra monitors. I recently made the switch from XP to Vista, and prior to the switch I ran 2 video cards to use 3 monitors. My main card is an ATI RADEON HD 2600 Pro, and it is installed and works just fine. However, my other card is a ATI RADEON 9250, slightly older and a PCI. Searching around I see conflicting info about it's compatibility with Vista. My only question is, is there anyway to get the 9250 to work using Vista? And I don't need it to work as my primary video card, the HD2600 works just fine for that. Windows shows it disabled in the device manager and says the driver is the problem, yet also says the driver is up to date and I can't SEEM to FIND ONE for the 9250 that works. If the 9250 won't work with Vista, is there any other way I can get my 3rd monitor to work? My issue there is aside from my main video card, all my other expansion slots are regular PCI, and I can't seem to find PCI cards that work with Vista. Or maybe there is some other way to get this third monitor hooked up, I just know I really miss it from running XP with 3. It's sitting here turned off and it makes me sad =(

Thanks for your time, take care.WELL, it looks like the solution is obvious. You need to get a PCI card with a graphics chip for which drivers for Windows Vista are available. Unfortunately, your PCI card is not one of them; http://ati.amd.com/support/driver.html shows no driver for the Radeon 9250 for Vista. However, here are two PCI cards with newer ATI graphics chips for which a Vista driver is available:

Doesn't this kinda make you wish you had stayed with Windows XP? Was the switch worth it? Thanks for the reply! Took me a bit to get back on here. The reason I switched from XP to Vista became a rather large headache that lead to a number of different PURCHASES. The only reason I wanted Vista was to run DirectX 10 (after getting a new DX10 video card), and I still haven't gotten that 100%. So I guess I would say no; it wasn't really worth it. I wouldn't say I regret it so much, maybe the dollars spent, but Vista seems okay for the most part. But the whole reason for switching seems kind of moot and I could have just saved myself a video card purchase (and now a second card maybe) as well as the price for Vista. C'est la vie.

Anyway, thanks for the help! I couldn't find any Vista compatible PCI cards, I appreciate you locating them for me. Guess I wasn't looking hard enough. I really do miss the third display and this inactive monitor is collecting a lot of post-it notes and it saddens me. Bit of an expensive message board. I suppose I could just reload up XP since I'm not all too thrilled with my DirectX 10 experience and just stick with DX9 for now. But then that would mean even more wasted money!

If not, down in the lower right-hand corner of your monitor next to the clock you should see a little icon that looks like a speaker. If you don't, click the < arrow to SHOW more icons, and it should be in there. Right-click the speaker, then click on "Recording Devices." Inside there, select the Microphone port and click "Set as Default."

Then you should be able to open up an application that uses the microphone and start singing. It may be hard to hear yourself over your own singing THOUGH, so you may want to try it through a decent set of headphones.

I RECENTLY installed Windows Vista on my Media Center PC. It worked for a few days with no problems at all. One day I turned on my tower and nothing happend. The power light came on, and the FANS made noise but the keyboard would not turn on and the screen did nothing. I have a FEELING this could be a HARDWARE issue, but because I installed Vista, that could be the reason.

I'm new here & found you by LOOKING for a solution to a minor, but annoying problem.

I have a Gateway cheapie laptop that I bought from Tesco a few months ago (yes, I know, buy CHEAP, buy twice, as my mum always used to say, but it was all I could afford to get while my old faithfull Dell was down). It came with Vista Home Premium pre-loaded.

My problem is, I can't for the life of me get AutoComplete to work. I've tried going through the Control Panel>Internet Options>Content & have ticked all the boxes, but it still won't prompt me when filling in forms etc.

I tried adjusting everything via Tools on my browser, too. Still nothing. If I switch to Explorer & use the Google toolbar, the Autofill is SHADED & it won't allow me to click on it to make any adjustments in the first place.

I'm getting very frustrated with this (maybe it's something simple that I'm not doing - not beyond the realms of possibility )

Also, maybe totally unrelated & possibly something more serious (or just normal for Vista). A few times an hour, I'll get what I can only describe as a blink. The screen goes blank for a second - it's almost like when you blink slowly. The screen also goes black for a second before the screensaver comes on. Is this bad news or something normal? I never noticed it on XP.

Hello all, my laptop has been acting strange the past couple of days with it freezing once or twice and then today I received a blue screen telling me windows needs to shutdown CAUSING my computer to restart itself. All my virus protection is up to date with quick scans ran daily and full system scans ran weekly. Any help or suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thank! I will ATTACH my HIJACKTHIS log.

I recently installed the soundmax driver for an asus m2n32 deluxe. I'm running a creative x-fi soundcard. after running the driver(asus) i have no sound. im guessing i did not need to install this. I run the creative test and i have sound but only during the test and nothing else
everything says the device is working properly . i DISABLED the asus driver but no luck. I'm not familiar on how to remove the program on vista. I TRIED asus help site but it never WORKS. i tried to reload the creative drivers but still nothin. Set the soundcard as default. It should work.

I have VISTA Home Premium and Internet Explorer 7.0.6 and using MCAfee. For the past 2 weeks I have been unable to download anything from the web. It starts out O.K. I tell it where to SAVE the down load. The download starts and runs but nothing is on my PC. The same thing happens if I just click RUN. Have tried with Pop-up blocker off and McAfee and FIREWALL disabled. I really need some advise.

HP COMPUTER using Windows VISTA, When I try to OPEN an email with an attachment, windows installer pops up SAYING " the feature you are trying to USE is on a network resource that is unavailable click ok to try again or enter an alternate path to a folder containing the installation package NAV.msi. Why does this happen and what can I do to fix this?"NAV.msi" is Norton installation file.

Ok, so i don't know MUCH about this, i've just heard random things, but perhaps you can help me.

The other day i heard that you could use a USB flash drive as RAM in windows vista, and then i heard you could partion your hard drive as RAM in Linux. When i heard this i thought it was amazing. How i'm thinking about it is like a RAM stick you install in your motherboard, perhaps that's not actually what it is.

I'm really just looking for some information on the whole thing, and i'm especially wonding if this would be possible on Windows XP.

Ty!What you have heard of is setting up a RAM drive...it basically uses HDD space as temporary storage and doesn't speed things up neccesarily.
Back when MBoard limitations on RAM were smaller and OS swapfile limits were still low this was a viable alternative.
Today however with the price of RAM and the MBoard capacities increased it may be counter-productive.

Have a ReadActually what Anythingwill is referring to is the ABILITY to use USB flash drives as a form of RAM in Vista. The flash RAM that supports this is supposed to be faster to access then hard drives but still slower than real system RAM. The technique is called Windows ReadyBoost. As far as I can see though it is just a fancy word for a page file on a USB flash drive.
You can do this in XP too altough not as elegantly as in Vista. But since it isn't as fast as real RAM and RAM being dirt cheap at the moment this is RATHER pointless.

A RAM drive is something else entirely though. Here you use RAM to create a temporary partition that is many times faster to access than a partition on a hard drive.Gotcha.
I read an article and breakdown on the ReadyBoost feature in Vista when i was still breaking RC2...didn't seem worth pursuing at the TIME and i'm sure the same still holds true for now.

I tried to open a '.exe' file but the pc didn't know what to open it with, so i just chose adobe reader just to see what would happen... Now i have found that all '.exe' files try to open with adobe reader!!! Of course this does not work.... so i was wondering how to return it back so '.exe' files open.

even if u did it wont affect other exe files...Hmmm... Exe's are executable files, they don't "open" with anything.

Unless... Are you sure you have your Folder Options set to show file extensions?

It could be that they are being hidden but the file is named, for example, file.exe(.mp3) < the ".mp3" being hidden? TRAVEL Here for a FIX to your problem.

Can anyone tell me why when I use INTERNET explorer on myspace it opens my friends in a new WINDOW thus making it IMPOSSIBLE to view their private profile because it assumes that I am not logged in. I am in fact logged in but in the original window. I just came BACK from break and my mom bought a new ISP (Comcast) and had it setup to the family computer (windows xp). I tried to hook it up to my laptop (vista) but the connection goes to local connection only and doesn't put me on the internet.

I tried a few common things like unplugging the modem and shutting down the computer and starting everything up, no dice.

So then I tried Ipconfig/release and ipconfig/renew and was kinda surprised...

the ending message was:

I'm unsure where to go from here, any insight?Is your laptop's wireless card on? Usually, it's Fn+F5, or you may have special button. Check your manual.
Like Broni suggests, look for a button along one of the sides on your laptop. It may or may not have a light on it but it's there.

I'm in the process of cleaning up my folders and FILES in Windows XP in preparation for a switch to Vista. In most cases I want to organize folders/files by Name; however, in certain folders I want THINGS to be organized non-alphabetically. The process I use is to simply open the folders and drag/drop icons in my preferred viewing order. I've noticed that in a few cases when I go back to look at the contents of a folder I've reorganized, Windows has kindly rearranged things back to alphabetically by Name.

Questions: Is there something I NEED to do to make certain that my reorganized folders/files "stick?" Will the files/folders retain their order when I transfer them to Vista? Does Vista provide another way to "randomly" organize folders and files?

Thanks!! Well, I believe the dragging technique is simply not the RIGHT way to permanently re-arrange the files/folders in a folder. Why aren't you using the menu options in Explorer to do this? You have various options there, as shown below:

Yes, I know, dragging is a relatively labor-intensive option. For certain reasons, however, it helps me to have certain folders organized in ways not covered by Explorer's standard options. Just curious if others have tried organizing things in non-standard ways and learned any tricks along the way.

Heres the story..

For the PAST 3 months i have suffered from the Blue screen of death, Toshiba laptop. Really done my head in, so Mom and Dad decide, lets get him a new one for his birthday.

NOW - Birthday this morning, anticipation as i crack open my brand new spanking Laptop - a joy to look at. AMD Athlon Turion 64 x2 1.9Ghz. Vista, 2GB of RAM, gorgeous. Works like a peach. 1 hour into working it, i wonder what i get? BLUE SCREEN OF *censored* DEATH.

Possible reasons? I used my iPod that i used for my old 1 to transfer files, possible reason? Surely not? If it is i will happily BIN the ipod, i seriously will. Someone please please help, its my birthday and im actually close to tears with this *censored*. I just want a working laptop tbh

xUpon some research, I found out that the Driver_IRQL_not_less_Or_Equal error means that the system tried to access a portion of memory using a kernel process IRQL (Interrupt Request Level - basically a table used by the kernel to manage interrupt sources) that was too high. Often this is caused by a bad device driver that is using an improper address. Other possibilities are faulty or mistmatched ram or a corrupted pagefile.

The easiest thing to do first is to turn off your pagefile, reboot and reset it to your old values.

We need two things from you:

Check the event viewer to see what error MESSAGES are there around the time you got the BSOD.

The exact error message for your BSOD which will tells what driver is involved in the problem, if this is infact the problem.

If the above doesn't work will have to test RAM and/or find the faulting driver...I simply cannot accept that there is something 'wrong' with the Laptop. It is hardly 2 hours old ffs, i really cannot believe my luck. The screen hasnt come up since, as i have only connected my iPod to it for a maximum of about 10secs. I have done some research and some things do suggest that bad USB's can occur.

You say reset to my 'old' values? what is old about this laptop?! lol. I have had it for 2 minutes!

Also, whats my pagefile?

Your right, since it's a new laptop and the old computer was having the same problem, I would suspect it to be the driver for the iPod as it hasn't given you the problem when it hasn't been connected.

You could try another USB cable for the iPod... do you know anyone that has one you could borrow to test out?

First of all though, have you updated the iPod's firmware etc tp the latest? Do you use iTunes or any other software when connecting the iPod?Well in its properties i checked it for errors, in went on for around half hour, then finished - whether it has fixed anything im not to know. I have now used the iPod to put some music on, and the BSOD never happened, and it hasnt happened since i first had it. Would you say its not gone? However, i dont really trust it tbh. My girlfriend has a USB that i could have off her so yeah, i will try that one out.

Not yet worried that you have a virus, or whether or not you have sufficient protection. I have seen on a very rare occasion that certain combinations of programs and certain USB devices cause errors like you're experiencing.

Thanks.also.. it won't RUN in safe mode either Start up your system. Hit "F8" key just after keyboard LIGHTS flash. Hopefully you'll get "Windows Advanced Options" menu (not positive if Vista has this menu). If there is a "Disable automatic restart on system failure" item, select it.

With any luck you'll stop on the Blue Screen of DEATH (BSOD). So i purchased the vista home premium UPGRADE to upgrade my XP to vista... and then later learned that there are 2 versions... a 32 bit version and a 64 bit version. Now I have just ordered parts that would coincide well with the 64 bit version... however it seems the upgrade disk for vista is only a 32 bit version . Is there such a thing as a windows vista premium UPGRADE that can take you to the 64 bit version? Is the only way for me to get the 64 bit version to purchase a FULL new copy of vista that is 64 bit? is there a way to upgrade from the 32 bit version to the 64 bit version from where I am now?

well it seems, after looking through my upgrade box, i can easily just order a copy of the 64 bit version for like 10 dollars

Still, anyone want to critique my set-up in relation to the 64 bit version?There are several things you should keep in mind before upgrading to Vista 64. Its compatability is getting better all the time, but there are still quite a few 32-bit programs that can not run in a 64-bit ENVIRONMENT. Find out if any of your "must-have" applications are like this.

In 32-bit windows, if a driver's not signed, a dialogue pops up prompting you to confirm if you really want to do this. In 64-bit, it simply doesn't allow you to install it, to keep the stability of the system up. Again, make sure ALL your devices have drivers signed for Vista 64.

The major reason people seem to want to jump onto the 64-bit bandwagon currently is to get around the 4gb RAM cap in 32 bit systems, but in that list I only see 2 gigs, so you wouldn't be using it for that purpose yet.


Now I'm not trying to discourage you from installing Vista 64, it's a solid system, but, you just need to be aware of those few things that could really mean a headache.well, I'm actually getting 2x 2x 1 GIG sticks of ram... ie total of 4 gigs of ram.I would just second what anondoin said. My major complaint with 64-bit OS (I've tried both XP-64 and Vista-64) is some HEADACHES with driver/program support.

I have had many programs refuse to install and pop up a warning box saying installing was canceled because 64-bit OS's arnt supported.

My HP printer driver as well would not install due to the same issue.

I DOWNLOADED windows media center 2005 and it came in three diffrent ISO IMAGES I usally use imgburn to burn iso's but you can only burn one iso on each disk how do i burn multiple iso files on one disc? I have installed Windows XP Home onto a new Compaq notebook that has a sata connected Hard Drive. It came with Vista Basic. Have been able to FIND all DRIVER but the sound, I had to covert XP to read the Hard Drive which it now does. Begin by ENSURING that your backup is up-to-date so that if you have to do a destructive restore you will not lose your valuable data. I doubt if Vista will automatically PERMIT a retro install of XP without some loss. Do not attempt to re-install XP without considering options.

Someone will be along shortly to advise on your OS problem.

Can you logon to WINDOWS into Safe Mode?

Tap F8 before the Windows Bootscreen APPEARS and use the arrow keys to choose Safe Mode.

Do you get the same problem in Safe Mode?
From there you should be able to backup your data to floppy disk or CD-ROM.Chances are very good that Vista will not let the XP install go past the second phase which is when it ID's your hardware...
Travel to bootdisk.com and DLoad a WinME bootdisk.
Extract the file to a clean floppy to create the bootdisk.
Boot to the floppy and at the A: PROMPT type in format C: /u and hit Enter.

WARNING: All your data will be erased.
It will ask for a volume name hit Enter to select none.
Remove the floppy and put your XP CD in and re-boot.
The setup for XP should now run with no problem.

My new desktop was pre-installed a WINDOW VISTA, however, I found it is not compatible with most of my previous application. Now I want to install Window XP. Please HELP me out what is the procedure to do it.See the response by PATIO here.

I had a 40gb ide/usb2 on my quad core( cannot open machine its under warrenty) thought i WOULD add more drives on usb2 added 2 sata drives([emailprotected]) and they work fine, tried to add 2 ide drives onto my usb2 and the system does not see them, is it vista thats the problem?I believe the limits are in the terrabyte range...so it shouldn't be size.

Are you trying to run these on the Front USB connections ?
Sounds as if there's not enough juice to run 5 HDD's externally...go to device manager. look undeer universal seriel bus and right click on your hub. On the power tab it will tell you how much power is avaliable per port and how much is being usedtried all advice, no difference if non working drives are connected to front usb. All external drives are housed in an old pc case useing its power supply, I might wait a bit and break the warrenty and open the case and install all the disks inside it. Tis christams time (well near anyway) and I have other things to do like open all the BOTTLES of barley sugar and eat all the food till I am sick. Then I will COME back to my PC. POST CLOSEDI would contact the manuf. and state that you need the extra storage and plan on having it done at a professionaly Certified repair facility but you want your Warranty to remain intact....

You can then do it yourself of course.

I'm not sure if this should be posted here or under hardware. Anyways, my sister has a Compaq Presario C501NR notebook with Vista Home Basic. RECENTLY it has stopped booting. At first it gave me an error that the file ntdll.dll was corrupt. I tried using the HP Recovery Manager, but was unsuccessful. I then ordered the recovery disc from HP. After receiving the disk I put the disk in the DRIVE and it booted up to the HP Recovery Manager. It reformatted the hard drive, created a partition for a recovery image and then installed the image on the drive. It said to restart the computer and then press F11 to complete the process. This is where I run into problems. Pressing F11 doesn't do anything except beep. As it attempts to boot it gives me the error 0xc00000e9 stating that there is a problem COMMUNICATING with a device. In the BIOS I ran a test on the hard drive. After about 15 seconds it says "#1 - 07 Fail." I have tried everything I know, but as I am a programmer and don't deal with hardware that much, I don't know what to do next. Any help would be great.Sounds like the harddrive has failed. Before running out and purchasing a new one, however, try this first:

This is the first time my computer has not successfully unhibernated. When I try to start it now, the screen does not turn on anything, or is black (cannot tell). The laptop makes no sound, except after a few minutes, the fan gets louder, as if the CPU is being completely used. I tried unplugging it and removing the battery a few times, but it will still not restart. I tried pressing F2, Esc, CTrl+Alt+Del, SysRq, and Del but nothing happens, but I think the BIOS should respond to one of these after I unplug the computer and restart it.
It won't start, and I'm not sure if the BIOS or Vista is the problem, please help.

Friend can't get any sound from speakers on new HP desktop. Running vista. Have checked all the normal sound related issues, even using system 'tests', but still no luck. More info...please.
Have you tried installing your sound drivers for example ? ?Are those built in, or standalone speakers? Self-powered? TESTED on another computer?Since this is a new unit, we didn't think to install other drives. The speakers were working fine on my computer last week.Ok, gonna try to be a little more CLEAR on this.

You need to provide all information about the system and the specs of the system. If you don't know the specifications, can you at least provide a model number of the HP you've got?

Meanwhile, check this things:

1. Are the speakers plugged in to the correct jack on the sound card?
2. Are the speakers powered (have an AC adapter)? Are they plugged in properly?
3. Have you tried testing the speakers with another device/computer?
4. Have you checked the device MANAGER to see if the hardware is working properly?

Have tried about every combination of PLUGINS on the backside of the unit. It's a new HP A6110N with Vista. The speakers are not powered. They worked fine on my computer, and another HP with XP Home. Ran 'tests'How are they powered? Batteries? Can you try them on your other computer, right now?

Recovery Console Password

On many XP installations you can't start the Recovery Console because it won't recognize any password even if a password has never been set (just hitting Enter will not work either). This REGISTRY edit causes the Recovery Console not to ask for a password. This works for both XP Home and XP Professional. The Regedit should be done before problems arise (like do it now). Take the usual backup precautions before editing the registry.

Start | Run | Regedit
Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\Setup\RecoveryConsole
Set the DWORD SecurityLevel value to 1
Exit Registry and Reboot

Done.

In some CASES, downloading, and placing that file in C:\Windows\system32 helps.

I have installed IE7 but every time I open a link in a new page and then close the new page, IE closes then reopens itself to my home page. It also closes down without warning when I'm SURFING the net. Any ideas?

Is it possible to burn a CD with having 2 CD roms? I'm wondering if there is a way to copy itself to the computer, remove it and then insert a blank CD and burn it BACK. Not sur eif Windows does this or if SHAREWARE is NEEDED. YES. Windows will ask you for blank CD, when it's done with copying original CD to hard drive.I do not have windows here at work. How do I initiate this, under tools? or control panel? In Vista, if you right-click the CD drive in My Computer, there's an option to copy. I haven't USED XP in a couple of years but I'm thinking there's something similar.

Windows can copy CDs natively but I find their built-in software definately lacking. I'd definately check out other applications.Right-click the CD drive, and then click "Write these files to CD".

I use AVG Antispyware (free version) and a few weeks ago I could run a full scan in about 15 minutes. Now it takes just over 48 minutes to run the same scan. I have added nothing into my hard drive in weeks. I also ran the DEFRAG yesterday but cancelled it after 5 hours. Can someone help.


Does AVG hang up on some file(s), or you can see it running?
Try defrag in Safe Mode, first? Do you run built-in Vista defrag?The defrag needs to run to completion for it to help.

Yes I run the built in Vista defrag. I did not know any other way. When it is running it does not stop but RUNS through to completion.

my little brother kept getting on my computer at my dads when i was there so i changed my password and i changed the admin password also so he couldt hack into it again... i forgot what it was because it was a long sequence of numbers though i dont remember which ones... how can i GET back on to change it back?Re-install OS while SAVING old files, use NEW PW?
TomIf u R using Win XP goto safe mode and log in as administrator and goto user accounts in control panel and change the password for the admin account and restart the computer. Now restart the computer and type the new password and no need to reinstall the operating system


If u r using Win Vista then u have to reinstall the operating system.

I've formated the drive though, what is a "filter driver" and how has it stayed on the drive? Is there anything I can do without have to deal directly with Dell?If you travel to Dell's website and enter the service tag# from the back of your machine it will list all your drivers...

I have just taken a drive from and older computer of mine (which had WINDOWS crash on it) and connected it to my other computer to copy data off. Now I can access most of the data, but I cannot work out how to get permissions to access files in the My Documents section - though I have worked out how to open the folders.
The older drive is (or rather was) running windows xp, the new computer is running windows vista

I got a new computer, against my better judgement. It is an emachine with Vista. I just got it LAST NIGHT. Everytime I restart my computer, and the desktop opens, a black window POPS up that says "windows\system32\cmd.exe" then inside the black window, it says access denied twice, then it closes. The power supply in my old Windows XP computer went out, so I bought a new lap-top with the Vista OS.

I want to access the data from the old hard drive, and bought a case that provides power and a USB connection, thinking I could use it as an external drive on my new lap-top.

I've run into an ENDLESS series of problems in getting "permissions" to to access the data on the old drive. I've been successful in opening some individual documents, but can't copy or MOVE whole sub-dierectories. I'd like to move lots of PICTURES and music to the lap-top in an efficeint manner. I don't have the time to do it individual FILE by individule file.

Is there any way I can give mself "permission" to access all of the data on the my old drive?

Any comments would be greatly appreciated. THANKS!


Travel Here...In your case I would take ownership at the root of the drive and let the change propagate from there through the whole drive.

Can anyone TELL me if DirectX 10 is out yet, if so can someone give me a link. I cannot find it anywhere.DX10 has been out since January, and actually before that if you count the Vista BETAS. But if you have XP you can't get it.DirectX 10 is only for vista. It's pointless right now because not many games support it. Im having a problem with windows vista home edition. When it loads up the desktop the taskbar is unresponsive and I can't click on anything there. I can still click on icons on the desktop but if I try to execute it, nothing will happen. Also the gadgets don't seem to load up. I really need HELP because this happens way too much and I have to restart my laptop more than once sometimes to get it to WORK.
Did it just start happening? Any recent hardware/software changes? What happens in Safe Mode? Did you try System Restore? Does Start button work?It's a brand new laptop that CAME with vista installed on it. I don't know if it has anything to do with the Etrust SECURITY suite/Ca security suite. In safe mode it works. The start button will work for the first minute or so but it won't execute anything. Quote

For some reason, the windows in my taskbar are opening up to the right side, and are smooshed to the side. I can only view two at once. I want to put them back to NORMAL!

It's hard to explain so I attached screenshot.

I am running Vista Ultimate. I am having a problem where vista is not recognizing directories in the path variable.

For example, if I open up a command line (ran as administrator) and TYPE "ipconfig", I get the error - 'ipconfig' is not RECOGNIZED as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file.

But if I change the director to c:\windows\system32> and type ipconfig it will give the correct output.

Now I know that the path variable should be set to the system32 directory, but when I check the path and the extension, everything seems ok. Here is a SCREENSHOT:



I don't know what else to do to get the command PROMPT to recognize the system32 diretory commands. Any help appreciated. And all the commands that I am TRYING exist in the system32 directory.
