I have been successfully USING itunes on my PC to load music on to my ipod. I then started to get an error message when I try to open itunes. It reads " itunes cannot run because because some of its required files are missing. Reinstall itunes." Having reinstalled itunes several times without success I contacted Apple. They gave me several procedures to follow, none of which cured the problem. They concluded the fault must be with the operating system. When I purchased the PC it was loaded with Windows XP Professional, but I guess it must be a pirated copy as I have no disc with it. I am looking to purchase Windows XP home edition to correct the problem as I don't appear to have the right spec PC to run Windows Vista. There are two questions that I would like advice on. Firstly, would installing the Windows Home Edition disc successfully overwrite the existing XP Professional operating system. Secondly, will it result in me losing all my existing music and photo's that are currently stored on my PC. Any help would be greatly appreciated.1. Is "itunes" the only program you're having trouble with on your PC? If so, I would recommend that you continue to work towards a RESOLUTION of that issue rather than reinstalling Windows XP.

2. Did you UNINSTALL "itunes" and then reboot once or twice before attempting to reinstall it. Were there any error messages when you uninstalled it and what was the "exact" message?

3. File System. Check the integrity of your Window XP file system and the surface of the disk that it occupies.

4. Defrag your file system.

Hi, I have just re-installed w98se after a brief foray into the wonderful world of xp which sucks so bad I can't understand why anyone would use the thing, never mind Vista! Anyway I have the old problem of two icons on the desktop which I don't want and, at this point, can't remove - this hapened last time I installed w98se and I know there is an easy way to remove the things, but cannot remember how I did it 5 years AGO. The icons in question are 'windows messaging INBOX' currently renamed S--T and the "network" icon which is useless as I don't GOT a Network!
Any help will be appreciated.

I have a Dell Inspiron 1501 laptop running Vista home basic.
Whenever I startup the computer I get the message: "Some programs have been blocked". When you right click on the message it gives you the option of Run blocked program which is - System CONFIGURATION Utility, view blocked programs or exit.
When I click on view blocked programs Window defender opens and the software explorer has a categoy option of:
Startup Programs, CURRENTLY Running Programs, Network Programs, or Winsock Service Providers. Each CATEGORY lists several items with a status of permitted, not yet classified or disabled. The only disabled item is PICTURE Project Monitor. It seems to be impossible to chane anything since any changes are "grayed out".
I am totally confused on how and what to do to get rid of the Blocked Program.

well here's the scoop;
I created a partition a while back with vista 64bit and windows xp 32 bit. I installed xp first to create the partition, then installed vista on the other half of the hard drive. Everything worked fine. When I would start up my computer I was prompted for which OS I would like to boot from. However I had to reformat recently and decided to start new with Vista 64 bit and xp 64 bit. I started by reformatting my vista first, then went and reformat xp with my 64 bit version. Now when I start up it automatically boots into xp everytime. I tried editing the boot file in xp but i simply DONT know what line to add or what not to. i messed with it a bit and managed to give myself the option to boot from vista, but now when i try it says something along the lines of "ntoskrnl missing" and it cant start. I'm not sure if I even edited the boot file correctly. I'll post more details of what specifically I have in the boot file when I get home from WORK. I figured, i'll just boot from cd and rebuild the file, or wipe everything clean and start over, but now I dont even get prompted to boot from cd. it goes directly to my os select screen now. Can anyone assist? I would greatly appreciate it.

As soon as u see that, press that. This will get you into the BIOS.
Here in the BIOS you can change your boot sequence.Yeah, I changed the boot priority to my cd rom first, but still, no option to boot from cd. It goes right to OS select.You said you messed with the boot.ini file.

When you re-installed XP the boot sector is recreated,,,therefore all your boot files related to Vista are GONE as well.
You could try doing a repair install of Vista but i think for it to work properly you are looking at starting over again.

Please re-state how exactly you did this step by step as well as defining your drives/partitions layout...ok, I installed Windows XP 32 bit. Before I started installing it I partitioned the drive(C:) down the middle so it was now C: and E: at ~150G each. I Installed xp to drive C:. After Installation was done I restarted with vista ultimate 64 bit in the drive, boot from cd, and installed it to drive E:. Everything RAN fine, until recently I had to reformat my vista. I decided to reformat my xp as well so that I could run xp 64 bit. I reformat my vista with the same 64 bit version as before. When it was finished I restarted, put in xp professional 64 bit, boot from cd and reformat my xp to xp professional 64 bit. I started installing drivers for my motherboard, it restarted and booted immediately to xp. No prompt to boot from cd, no OS select, just directly to xp. I downloaded some boot managers because i didn't want to mess with the boot.ini as i had no previous experience with it. The boot managers were even more confusing, they didn't recognize my partition, and I had to work loops around it just to find my partition with vista on it. I uninstalled it and did a little research on boot.ini commands. So as of right now this is what I have in the boot editor on windows xp professional 64bit:

Previous to how I have it set now, I had Vista set to partition(2). The computer would just restart when I would select it. I figured that was the wrong partition so I set it to partition(0) and when I select vista, it boots up and I get an error saying that ntoskrnl.exe is corrupt or missing and needs to be replaced or repaired. I checked the E: drive from XP and found that system 32 still has the file ntoskrnl.exe. So it must just be corrupt. However ever since xp professional 64 bit I am not prompted to boot from cd, regardless of the fact that my boot priority is set with cd-rom at the top of the list.

Hope that that's thorough enough! Any help would be so appreciated. Thanks!

First of all is the XP install having any hiccups at all ? ?
Problems booting, hanging or shutting down ? ?
If so i would run a Repair Install of XP

Then i would DLoad and install VistaBootPro....wipe the Vista partition and use it to do the Vista install.
Do you have a copy of the original bootini to revert to ? ?
If so do this before the Vista install. Vista handles the boot sector a bit differently than other flavors of Windows but if the XP install is intact there is no reason this shouldn't work...Untill recently I had a XP64/Vista Business dual boot.
I already had XP64 installed on my C drive, and installed Vista on a completely different drive.

Now in my boot.ini file on the C drive, it just had one line, only the XP line.
The real boot file came from Vista, who had created the dual boot file.

The standard OS to boot would be Vista (you know, the OS that starts after 30 secs).
But after downloading EasyBCD and installing it in Vista, I could easily change that.

So, my point:
CHANGING the boot.ini file (from your xp partition) wouldn't do you any good, since Vista creates the dualboot.

At the time that I attempted to download Nikon D80 NEF (RAW) files to my MS Vista computer, all went well until the last step where Photoshop declared they were in a format it COULD not accept although the photos were put into the MS "Picture" file. Subsequently I have read that this is a known problem of D80 NEF files and Photoshop Elements 5. Then when I was rebooting Photoshop, the Organizer failed to come up but the Editor does. I have restarted the computer several times and then removed Photoshop and reinstalled it without fixing the problem. Any thoughts on how to fix this? hello, i am having a problem putting my pc into sleep mode. i just built it about 2 and half WEEKS ago, and it has never worked and i dont know why.

my pc will act as if it is going into sleep, but it turns back on right away and FUNCTIONS normally and i dont know why... i haven't installed much on it at all. just a few games and messenger programs, and anti virus. even when i first built this thing, be4 i put most of the programs, it didnt work. i did mess with the power options but that didnt work either.

I just purchased a new laptop which CAME pre-installed with Microsoft Vista. Now I've always used Procomm Plus to make serial connections to EQUIPMENT I work on, But when I tried to install Procomm I received a message that the software is incompatible. So my question is this, Anyone know of a version of Procomm Plus or another equivalent program that I can use that is compatible with Microsoft Vista? I hate to go back to XP as I'm just getting the machine setup the way I like it. HELP

It's discontinued program, which is not even fully compatible with Windows XP.It works in XP for me without trouble I guess because I only used it for direct connections, Are you aware of any other TERMINAL emulation software that is Vista compatible? Vista doesn't even have hyper terminal or at least I can't find it and I'll definately have to have something.
I didn't know but I was just reading on the Microsoft site that you can choose to install software under "make older programs" tab. I haven't tried it yet but will tomorrow the discs are at my office, However I'd like to find something that is truly compatible if anyone knows of anything.

Then right click it and select compatibility mode.
Re-boot and see if it will launch that way.

A fine program by the way...The solution for Vista / XP compatibily PROBLEMS for me is Virtual PC 2007.

Is it possible to have Windows xp home installed and windows xp PROFESSIONAL also installed on the same computer. If so can I install windows xp professionals without losing any data in my windows xp home operating system.I see why not. I've installed Vista on one drive partition and XP on ANOTHER. Running Vista home premium (pre-installed) on Advent T9408, Core2CPU, 4300-1.80GHz, 1022mb, 32bitOp. system.

Every time I open up Windows Media Centre my mouse disappears visualy, its there somewhere in the darkness as I can shove it to the corner and highlight various parts of the screen - but I can't see it.
This is the only programme I have this problem with, the mouse is VISIBLE elswhere on every other programme, its not as if I can simply re-install the programme as Media Centre was pre-installed when I got the computer.

Just turning off Aero gets rid of the transparencies, etc.

Switch the theme back to Windows Classic, as Patio suggested. The same can be done for the taskbar to change how it opens.

Dual Boot Vista/XP - Possible?

After 3 days of refreshing my Windows knowledge, following detailed instructions from apcmag.com Dual Boot Superguide, and downloading every suggested software, I'm about to conclude that this just isn't possible.

Using a new Dell XPS 410, 320GB hard drive, preloaded Vista Home Premium 32 Bit Version 6.0, DVD & floppy drives, 2 GB memory.

Dual boot software: GParted 3.4.9 partition editor, EasyBCD 1.7.1 boot editor, Windows XP Home Edition OEM, and the SATA AHCI/RAID drivers from Dell.

I believe the problem lies with the disk partitioning. My hard disk came with 3 Primary Partitions: 1)FAT16, 2)Recovery 10 GB, and 3)OS (Vista) 288 GB. When I repartition the 288 GB sector with GParted to make room for the XP system it creates a Logical Drive (145 GB) rather than a partition.

According to Vista's Help & Support there can only be 3 primary partitions on a basic disk. They will always be the first 3 partitions and can be used to start an operating system. Additional partitions will be Logical Drives and will FUNCTION LIKE primary partitions except that they CANNOT be used to start an operating system. Gee whiz! I can't very well delete the FAT16, Vista Recovery, or the Vista Operating System and still call it a "Multi-boot" now can I?

Does anyone know what I've missed? Or, do I get the feeling that Bill Gates is my old uncle resurrected that used to have me pull his finger after a big Thanksgiving dinner.

You're right, with that partition setup a dual boot is not possible.
I wonder if Dell do this deliberately, or just don't realize that it really gets on people's nerves?
Your only option is to delete one of the partitions.
What's the FAT16 partition used for? And do you definitely need the recovery partition, i.e. is it one of those partitions usually supplied in place of an OS disk?I HAD EXACTLY THE SAME PROBLEM WITH AN HP PAVILION, HOWEVER, MY HARD DRIVE HAD ONLY TWO PARTIONS ON THE MASTER, RECOVERY 9 Gb, OS etc 90 Gb. WHEN I TRIED TO PARTION THE SECOND DRIVE AND INSTALL XP, VISTA WOULD NOT LET ME DO THAT. DUNNO WHY. IT SEEMS AS THOUGH VISTA IS SELF PROTECTED AND DOES NOT ALLOW ANOTHER OS TO EXIST. I guess Microsoft's comments about partitions was not totally accurate (that's being charitable).

Further web forum searching provided a couple of hidden pearls of wisdom that should be engraved in stone for anyone using the abcmag dual boot instructions and EasyBCD.

1. XP has a problem handling really big drives. I reduced my partition (logical drive) from 145 GB to 36 GB. I'm not sure this alone would have cured my problem but with 2. below the system now works.

2. Windows XP installation will notice that C: is the primary (boot) partition and since it's also a NTFS partition it will put it's file NTLDR in there. Setting E: or F: as the XP drive in Easy BCD will break your Windows XP nicely since it won't find a NTLR on these drives.

Make sure drive is set to C: for Windows XP in Easy BCD:

FAT16: As I understand it, this is your disk's "phone directory" and MUST be present. At least that was the case "back in the day". Not sure about VISTA but I would never touch this partition.

But i'll have to say the reason these pearls aren't cut in stone is because they are inaccurate.

XP does not have a problem with big drives. This was one of the MAJOR improvements in the Windows OS that MS insisted on. Prior to XP only NT based systems could handle the newer large HDD's

No matter where a Windows install goes to or which partition it is on Windows will always write system files to the root directory of C:. Even if you had more than 2 installs of Windows regardless of what flavor this will occur for each installation.

There is no need for a FAT 16 partition on your HDD. Partition info resides in the master file table in the beginning sectors of a drive. This is created when the partitions are set and before an OS is installed.

Vista although it handles the boot sector a bit DIFFERENTLY than older Windows OS's will still also write info to the root sector of C: as well.

As stated though glad you're up and running.

I have a new COMPUTER with Vista pre-installed and have added my Outlook 200o to the new SYSTEM. ALTHOUGH properly set up to SEND and receive Email it refuses to connect and gives an error message34 "Error OX800ciOf.

You need the original installation disks to re-install any programs for them to work.

Not all programs need to be installed off of a cd to work properly, some of them can indeed simply be copied. I couldn't tell you which ones will do what, though.

My DAUGHTER has a Compaq P4-brand new with Vista installed. She's downloaded, installed ADOBE Flash, uninstalled, reinstalled...none of the flash sites work-it keeps asking her to download and install Adobe Flash. Is this a "Vista" bug? Thank you in advance. I went over last night and had same problems...just will not run flash content and keeps prompting for installing.

Hi, I am on a FRIENDS new vista home premium pc. I cannot seem to download anything,. eg, I tried to download windows live messenger and it starts but will not complete, the same with yahoo messenger, yahoo messenger says "Its responding, then it states it is not responding and it keeps doing this and will not download!

This is a little different, what happens is it will be downloading yahoo messenger, and you see the scroll bar, but it states at the top of download screen "installing" then it says "installation not responding and it goes back and forth like that the WHOLE time
but the scroll bar said100% done but it would still not stop osicilating. Iwaited almost 3 hours and finally had to cancel it

I did not MEAN to suggest that using CCleaner would solve the problem. On an new system, I agree that running a cleaner is not very likely to help resolve a problem. I was just wondering how come windows ME didnt get much attetion while it was out..... is something wrong with it. (other than it being very old now days)From what I HEARD about Me is that it's the most unstable version of Windows out there.

Also that it wasn't that much of a CHANGE compared to W98.

But all that is from what I heard. I never had ME installed on one of my systems.Windows ME was a MINOR upgrade over 98se, and unfortunately had horrible stability issues for alot of people. (I myself however ran it just fine and never had any serious troubles, at least not anything more than what 98se gave me.)

Also, and I think this is the bigger issue, Windows 2000 came out months earlier. While 2000 was built on the very reliable NT kernel, Me was still using the somewhat problematic 9x kernel. Even still, 2000 was able to run a great number of programs designed for 9x without difficulty, and could do so in a more stable environment.

The final nail in the coffin, however, was that XP was released just a year later, combining the stability of the NT kernel with even better compatability for the 9x programs. (Or so they HOPED, there was compatability issues with XP just like there is now with Vista, nothing new there.) With the stable NT kernel mixed with the GUI that was such a breath of fresh air when compared to the stale and sterile pre-XP interfaces, why would anybody want to bother with Me?

I have just joined this forum sowill say Hi to everyone. I have been surfing this forum for the last hour. It appeasrs to have some sharp moderators on board. I could use some advice I can not get command prompt to run as administrator. When I right click the cmd icon in start menu, and select “run as administrator” I get a message that states “This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. CREATE an association in the Set Association control panel.”If I select cmd properties and COMPATIBILITY all the boxes are greyed out including the “run as administrator” in the privilege level section. So I can not change any selection.
This used to work at one time but does not now. Thanks to all for any help.

I am right clicking the CMD icon in start menu. It does the same thing in C:\windows\system32\cmd in explorer. If i click on the "Reliability & Performance Monitor" icon it works normally.

I have always had cmd on my main vista start menu as well as all programs\accessories. As I stated before I have also tried it from explorer C:\windows\system32\cmd.exe.I have always been able and still can run cmd by left clicking but this does not give admin privileges. I believe the problem is connected to the selection of cmd properties and compatibility greyed out “run this program as administrator”box in the in the privilege level section.
Also in vista if you select a "cmd" in the vista start/search box it will display the cmd icon at the top when you press enter. This normal.

The problem is no matter where I right click the cmd icon it always gives me the message that states “This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the Set Association control panel.”
The cmd "run as admin" ran OK up until a few week ago but stopped for some reason.

Did you TRY to create new profile?
Did you try SYSTEM Restore?I can run reliability and performance monitor and certain others but not many.
I have not tried restore. Not sure how far to go back. Might try next.

There are several versions of the .NET framework and they are all independent- that is, they are not cumulative.

The way I've always tended to think of it is similar to how Java is. a Java program is compiled into an otherwise useless class file that contains what is called "java BYTECODE" this java bytecode is interpreted by the java runtime which emulates a virtual "java" CPU. This allows the actions of the program to be monitored every step of the way and appropriate blocks and exceptions to occur when it tries to do anything it shouldn't. With Java, when you install the Java runtime, it installs two things: the runtime "program" and plugins themselves, as well as the Java Class library, which provides the base set of functionality for all java programs.

Equally, .NET programs are compiled to something called IL (Intermediate Language). The idea is to allow the programs to be optimized based on what CPU it is running on- so if you run Program X on a Super speedy hyperthreaded machine, the CLR (the Common Language Runtime) can compile the program to optimized machine code Specifically for that processor. The same goes for nearly any other processor- the best optimizations are performed based on the current environment. The .NET Framework installs the CLR (the actual virtual machine) as well as the .NET framework classes themselves, which provide the base functionality for .NET programs.

as I had said in an earlier post, in Internet Options under the Programs Tab, first block, it says to not use IE 64 bit as the default browser, in both Vista and Win7. I think a lot of sites are not geared up for the 64 bit Browser and won't open if you are using it.

While we could have done work to make it harder for users to get to 64bit IE (e.g. by not creating a Start menu shortcut), I don't think there's any super-compelling reason to do so.

One day, 64bit IE might see a lot more use, as 64bit systems take over and 64bit add-ons become available. Time will tell.

So, the summary is this:

I built TWO computers and there both doing the same THING, there looking for a driver for a PCI device, I’ve tried disabling other devises and then removing it and it just comes back, here’s what I have.

This is my first ever post on this forum so bare with me.

I have just got a new computer with some pretty decent specs and everytime I go ONTO a game after a while I would get display driver crashed and has recovered, just a complete frozen screen making me have to turn off at the plug and also since today x2 blue screens of DEATH.

Today, I took a look in my "Users" file (C:\Users). Usually, it would contain a folder for every user on the computer. This was not the CASE. When I looked in the folder today, the file for my account (the only one on the system) was missing. There are three other folders in the file [Default (hidden), Mcx1 (Does anyone know what this is?), and Public]. I know for a fact that my user file is not hidden because I have configured Windows to show hidden files. I don't THINK this affects my computer at all because I still have all of my files and I can still access them all. Also, I should ADD that when I viewed the properties of a random Word document on my desktop, the target was "C:\Users\[user name]\..." which means the computer can still access the folder. It's not a big deal, I'd just like to know what happened. I have a Dell Inspiron 530 running Vista Home Premium (if that helps with anything). I am no longer able to find URL's in my browser bar, nor am I able to copy URL's when trying to post a picture from my Picasa WEB album. Although it says "copy URL" no URL is shown.

I un-installed IE8 awhile back because I use Chrome as my default, but it turns out many sites require IE for job applications and do not support other browsers.

I have tried to get IE8 back but I have found no available downloads. The Microsoft site says it comes bundled with Windows 7 and apparently gives no link to replace it if you remove it.

And, why did you make the irrational decision to "remove" IE8? Just because you've installed Chrome and have made it your default browser, that's absolutely no reason to remove IE, or any other non-Chrome browser. Two or more browsers can live happily together on the same system.

If you don't want to use IE (except for sites that require it), then simply don't use it. There's no need whatsoever to remove it. Computer users get themselves into trouble with this notion of removing IE since IE, especially the VERSION originally packaged with a particular version of Windows, is somewhat tightly integrated into the Windows 0S. Remember that unless you empty the recycle bin, the "deleted" files will still occupy space on the drive, as well.

IMO the best option for defragmentation is to not do it. NTFS is pretty similar to the various Linux filesystems that claim to not require defragmentation, so I really don't see why people have this complex that "windows machine"="needs defragmentation".

Now if you were using FAT32, that's a different story altogether.

The ONE.. the very ONLY time that I ever installed a Defragmentation program (Smartdefrag) I ended up with an unbootable system. Aside from that I've had Zero disk problems, speed or space wise.

EDIT: also, the "no need to defragment" thing is amplified by the fact that both Vista and Windows 7 will perform defragmentation in the background during idle time.

Okay, now what the heck?

I have a business laptop with safeboot encryption meaning I have to enter a username/password before the OS can boot. This would also mean that I can't boot to a windows recovery disk to tell windows to recover to a System Image if I'm not mistaken. If this is true then the rest of my question will be somewhat void UNLESS I can convince the folks to unencrypt my drive for a day while I build my image and recreate on the new drive.

What I am trying to FIGURE out if a System Image will allow me to backup my current setup on a 80 GB HD to a 250 GB HD. Trying to make restoring my OS as painless as possible as I've honestly gotten EVERYTHING the way I want it.

I do see this http://www.clonezilla.org/ which to be honest I've NEVER used before. I've used Ghost and could go that route but this would still require I believe booting to a CD which with the environment/encryption I can't do currently.

Let me know your thoughts please. You can store a disc image on any medium (cd, dvd, hd, removable hd) and restore from that medium. I've never used Clonezilla but I've been using Acronis True Image for a long time.Without the password for the image you are basically screwed and are looking at doing a clean install...

I am trying to install a WIRELESS router for my Dell XPS and another computer. On the Dell, I can not remember my User ID and password. How do I to about finding them?What User ID and passwords are these exactly and how did you GO about forgetting them ? ?

Well, first, see, if you can access your data, unless you don't have anything important there.
The very next steps depends on your answer to the above.Is it still under warranty?The laptop itself is about 2 years old so not anymore. Unfortunately, I have had a lot of problems with it. WITHIN the first week of BUYING it, I had to send it back because a screw was loose on one of the fans and actually got stuck in the fan. But luckily I don't have anything important on there.If you don't, I suggest, you start with testing hardware to see, if you won't waste your time on reinstalling Windows.

MAKE sure, you select tool, which is appropriate for the brand of your hard drive.
Depending on the program, it'll create bootable floppy, or bootable CD.
If downloaded file is of .iso type, use ImgBurn: http://www.imgburn.com/ to burn .iso file to a CD (select "Write image file to disc" option), and make the CD bootable.

NOTE. If your hard drive is made by Toshiba, unfortunately, you're out of luck, because Toshiba doesn't provide any diagnostic tool.

A. If you have more than one RAM module installed, try starting/running computer with one RAM stick at a time.

NOTE Keep in mind, the manual check listed above is always superior to the software check, listed below. DO NOT proceed with memtest, if you can go with option A

B. If you have only one RAM stick installed...
...run memtest...

1. Download - Pre-Compiled Bootable ISO (.zip)
2. Unzip downloaded memtest86+-....iso.zip file.
3. INSIDE, you'll find memtest86+-....iso file.
4. Download, and install ImgBurn: http://www.imgburn.com/
5. Insert blank CD into your CD drive.
6. Open ImgBurn, and click on Write image file to disc
7. Click on Browse for a file... icon:



8. Locate memtest86+-....iso file, and click Open button.
9. Click on ImgBurn green arrow to start burning bootable memtest86 CD:



10. Once the CD is created, boot from it, and memtest will automatically start to run.

The running program will look something like this depending on the size and number of ram modules installed:




It's recommended to run 5-6 passes. Each pass contains very same 8 tests.

This will show the progress of the test. It can take a while. Be patient, or leave it running overnight.

The most important item here is the “errors” line. If you see ANY errors, even one, most likely, you have bad RAM.
