Solve : Operating system fault? |
|
Answer» I have been successfully USING itunes on my PC to load music on to my ipod. I then started to get an error message when I try to open itunes. It reads " itunes cannot run because because some of its required files are missing. Reinstall itunes." Having reinstalled itunes several times without success I contacted Apple. They gave me several procedures to follow, none of which cured the problem. They concluded the fault must be with the operating system. When I purchased the PC it was loaded with Windows XP Professional, but I guess it must be a pirated copy as I have no disc with it. I am looking to purchase Windows XP home edition to correct the problem as I don't appear to have the right spec PC to run Windows Vista. There are two questions that I would like advice on. Firstly, would installing the Windows Home Edition disc successfully overwrite the existing XP Professional operating system. Secondly, will it result in me losing all my existing music and photo's that are currently stored on my PC. Any help would be greatly appreciated.1. Is "itunes" the only program you're having trouble with on your PC? If so, I would recommend that you continue to work towards a RESOLUTION of that issue rather than reinstalling Windows XP. Having reinstalled itunes several times without success I contacted Apple. They gave me several procedures to follow, none of which cured the problem. They concluded the fault must be with the operating system. Sure... Just blame your competitor's operating system... Give me a break...The error message reads exactly as I have typed it. I dont appear to have any other issuse with the PC. I have rebooted the Pc after removing itunes several times, I have even created a new itunes account from scratch as suggested by Apple, but none of this has worked. Have spoked with numerous Apple support techs (at considerable expense) to eventually be told that it must be the Windows operating system causing the error. Is this a custom made computer? Are you able to run windows updates? It would be a cryin' shame to downgrade a perfectly good XP Pro machine. Right after trying to launch iTunes go to Start...run and type in eventvwr.msc and LOOK at the top of the "system" and "application" logs for any errors RELATED to iTunes that might give you a more in depth idea. |

Solve : REMOVING UNWANTED ICONS FROM DESKTOP? |

Answer» Hi, I have just re-installed w98se after a brief foray into the wonderful world of xp which sucks so bad I can't understand why anyone would use the thing, never mind Vista! Anyway I have the old problem of two icons on the desktop which I don't want and, at this point, can't remove - this hapened last time I installed w98se and I know there is an easy way to remove the things, but cannot remember how I did it 5 years AGO. The icons in question are 'windows messaging INBOX' currently renamed S--T and the "network" icon which is useless as I don't GOT a Network! |

Solve : Adobe Photoshop Elements .5 Organizer start up is blocked? |
|
Answer» At the time that I attempted to download Nikon D80 NEF (RAW) files to my MS Vista computer, all went well until the last step where Photoshop declared they were in a format it COULD not accept although the photos were put into the MS "Picture" file. Subsequently I have read that this is a known problem of D80 NEF files and Photoshop Elements 5. Then when I was rebooting Photoshop, the Organizer failed to come up but the Editor does. I have restarted the computer several times and then removed Photoshop and reinstalled it without fixing the problem. Any thoughts on how to fix this? Is Vista somehow blocking part of Photoshop?some computer specs???Quote from: programming_pat on December 11, 2007, 04:18:20 PM some computer specs???After wandering through Adobe's forum, I found the solution for this problem: go into msconfig.exe, Services and uncheck "Adobe Active FIle Monitor V5" - whatever that is or does. Problem now resolved. Thanks. |

Solve : Dear God... please help, with vista search problem.....!? |

Answer» Hi superdave no not in recycle bin i have emptied that. what if i asked the question another way? how do i find any saved pictures i want when i use vista search? beacuse at the moment it acts as if there no images saved by me wheni know for a fact that i have pictures saved everywhere, on desktop , sharing folders etc? how sad is that? my stupid problem seems unanswerable............. try searching for ????*.jpg if that doesent work if you have any cmd.exe experience, open cmd.exe and just paste this in set a=%cd:~0,1% & dir %a%:\*.jpg /b /s %temp%\hh & write %temp%\hh wait a minute.. and notepad will load with the paths to all the pictures on ur computer thanks Diablo, apologies for the delayed reply but i was away from the offending laptop and only wanted to ask this when i could access it again. i have no cmd.exe experience! would it be possble for someone to TELL me what is meant buy this? IWOULD really appreciate it. and woiuld love finally once and for all know what photos i have saved ini the hidden recesses of vista! Appreciate anyone s help......... Stop press! i musy have cockde it up the last time. i just did the search again inputting ?*.jpg And there is everything! there are 1369 pics! most are fine but would just like to delete the whole lot. properly!! anyone hknow how i can do that??!!be your best FRIEND! lol *censored* vista.... ok!! having found all the offedning pics , by using vista search and entering ?*.jpg. what i did then was o over pics , and usually delete pics by right pic and it sends to recycle bin, what i was advised to do this time was do the same but hold shift down as i did. it said ' are you sure you want to premanently this FILE?' as against the above message? i guess what im asking is, does that sound effective?in terms of getting rid of her for ever?! or is vista cheekily keeping copies of said images COPIED and replicated elsewhere? as all ways any advice really appreciated, i know this is one longgggggggg running post! |

Solve : deleting a a file, or deleting user account?? |
|
Answer» hi guys, can anyone tell me, if you DELETE a file i vista,i.e. right cliking, holding down shift and deleting,' are you certain you wish to permanently delete this file?' does that mean that file is fuly GONE from your COMPUTER or has vista, in all its wisdom, copied it and stored elsewhere as is its want? and secondly, if i delete a user account from my laptop, and set up a new one, does everthing die with that old account or all files, saved documents and pics etc? sometimes seems that would be the easiest way,,,, have so much junk everywhere laptop just want it clear, but dont want to rebuild as, 1) dont know how to! and 2) is other users on it. So i just deleted my user account and created a new one would all old stuff be gone? Oh vista is tiring..................... Cheers for any helpI take it the GF is still looking over your shoulder ? ? Shift+Delete deletes the file instead of sending it to the Recycle Bin... Removing a user account removes access to that account but may not neccessarily delete the data permanently... You may want to do a format and clean install of Windows and start again... All data can be retrieved if the person is willing to spend the CASH needed to do so. |

Solve : Need a lot of help with Vista? |
|
Answer» oh....ok then, unfortunately I stil dont know what is wrongand does that mean that losing the one SECTION on the device manager with the other Radeon card setting is bad?Quote Primary video Adapter is set to PCI th other selection is AGP/OnboardIn that case, you'll have to go back to BIOS, and switch primary video to AGP/onboard. Because your video CARD (Radeon) is AGP type, it'll autimatically DISABLE onboard video. Do that, restart, go to Device Manager, and see what is on, what is off under Display adapters.alrighty and once again exit stage BIOS lolIt takes time, sometimes, to figure things out.actually i tried doing what you said and it switched GRAPHICS card to its original, so yeah, thanks to a friend it was fixedi actaully thought i messed something up till he showed me what to do....So, how is everything overall? Is your Radeon card set in Device Manager on, and VGA display on? We still need to do something about your XP hard drive, don't we?yeah at least I would like to upgrade it to vista case that SEEMS like the only option, caue i dont think its possible t downgrade right, also it says in the device manager that the drivers arent working so im finding the drivers as we speakactual my friend thinks he can help so im gonna try his thing and get back on later, thanks for all the help ^_^You're welcome Be aware, that there are no Vista drivers for your card at ATI site: http://ati.amd.com/support/driver.html You can try either XP driver, or beta driver from here: http://drivers.softpedia.com/get/GRAPHICS-BOARD/ATI/ATI-Catalyst-Video-Driver-Beta-Vista-RC1.shtml |

Solve : Help, Vista compatiblility with terminal emulator programs? |

Answer» I just purchased a new laptop which CAME pre-installed with Microsoft Vista. Now I've always used Procomm Plus to make serial connections to EQUIPMENT I work on, But when I tried to install Procomm I received a message that the software is incompatible. So my question is this, Anyone know of a version of Procomm Plus or another equivalent program that I can use that is compatible with Microsoft Vista? I hate to go back to XP as I'm just getting the machine setup the way I like it. HELP I just purchased a new laptop which came pre-installed with Microsoft Vista. Now I've always used Procomm Plus to make serial connections to equipment I work on, ... I always liked Telix, however I don't know if it will work under Vista. Last time I looked for it to d/l, I seem to recall that it wasn't as easy to find as it once was, so I bookmarked it. Here's the url: http://www.chebucto.ns.ca/Services/PDA/DosComm.shtml if you'd care to experiment. There are a couple other programs available there too. |

Solve : Vista & .net passport?? |
|
Answer» Its you know who again! I went to sign my friend up to microsoft net passport but I did not see where it can be done for Vista, requirements ONLY up to xp. Can it be done yet for Vista, any one know? Thanks In its ever-expanding push toward computer domination, Microsoft launched a concept called the .NET Passport. (Soon after installation, Windows XP urgently asks you to sign up for one.) In theory, the Passport sounds great: Give Microsoft a user name and password, and you have a Passport. When you visit any Passport-aware Internet sites, you type in your same Passport name and password. You no longer have to remember different user names and passwords for every place that you visit or shop on the Internet.Yes, its true and I know what you are saying, however as far as I know you cannot use windows live messenger without a .net passport and thats all I need it for now. Thanks, however I still need to know if requirements necessary to get a net passport include Windows Vista yet? Thanks again Try ThisQuote from: tomshope on December 08, 2007, 11:00:16 AM Its you know who again! I went to sign my friend up to microsoft net passport but I did not see where it can be done for Vista, requirements ONLY up to xp. Can it be done yet for Vista, any one know?ThanksMaybe I just need a cup of coffee, but I don't quite get this. Broni posted a good explanation of .Net. I don't see that the OS has anything to do with it. .Net is used by many "Passport-aware Internet sites" so that would become apparent when you're viewing the website via your web browser. It seems to me that that would work the same whether your OS is XP, Vista, or even older versions of Windows. Is this not true? |

Solve : Mouse missing in Media Centre!? |
|
Answer» Running Vista home premium (pre-installed) on Advent T9408, Core2CPU, 4300-1.80GHz, 1022mb, 32bitOp. system. When you run Windows Media Center in full-screen mode on a dual-monitor system, only the monitor that Media Center is CURRENTLY displaying on is usable. The secondary display will not redraw and you cannot use it or interact with it. This is the design for how all full-screen DirectX exclusive applications work, and unfortunately Media Center does not have any control over that. As a workaround you can change Media Center from full-screen mode to windowed mode and then resize the window as large as it can go.Thank you for your help - At least I can now use it fully, and knowing its not a programme fault with my own unit GIVES me some comfort. You've been very helpful as USUAL - thanks again. You're welcome |

Solve : Notepad Problem? |
|
Answer» Quote from: dahlarbear on DECEMBER 02, 2007, 06:15:18 AM Have you tried "limiting" your use of "Enter" key. Use it to separate paragraphs while TYPING not end-of-line. Hi, dahlarbear Thanks for the response. Hmmm... Somewhere I must've given the impression that I 'manually' create the lines (by hitting 'enter' when I get to the right margin). But I don't do that. I have had the Notepad (and Wordpad, for that matter) format set to 'wrap' from the time I first started using them. And I never hit return until I want to start a new paragraph. That's why it's so odd for the copy-and-paste procedure to create this double-spaced format on some occasions when I'm transferring the message to an email compose window (whether on or offline) or a message board window. For the past day or so as I've been experimenting and trying to get it to do it, it hasn't. It's been behaving itself. I'll see if I notice anything out of the ordinary if/when it does it again -- and it will. Thanks ! ScottDoes it happen only in your online MAIL compose window?Quote from: Broni on December 02, 2007, 09:08:27 AM Does it happen only in your online mail compose window? Hi, Broni No. Once recently (as mentioned above) it happened while attempting to paste into Fastmail's compose screen. I decided to open my Outlook Express and try pasting the message into its compose screen, but it came out double-spaced there, as well. Your question made me realize one thing: when it happens in one location/program (e.g. Fastmail or an online message board), it will happen wherever I try pasting that same message from that point on -- as if something caused the very copy-and-paste function to 'glitch' and create a double-spacing that will be carried to whatever compose window, message board window, etc. that I want to put it. I end up having to paste it, somewhere, and simply try to UNDO the double-spacing manually. (It doesn't always work or come out looking right.) I'm beginning to think that this inconvenient glitch is just something I'm going to have to come to terms with, although it does seem to happen when I least want it to. ScottIt's really one of the weirdest problems, I've ever seen. For now, my brain is blank...Sometime when you are trying this, you will see a bunch of little icons at the bottom of the window. Ignore them. At the top of the page use file/new/message. When the window opens, let it have it ------ right betwixt the eyes ------. |

Solve : Am i doomed to vista?? |
|
Answer» Quote from: patio on November 29, 2007, 03:33:07 PM Switch Vista to Classic Mode and turn off Aero... using the drivers that came with my dell, as i stated, they are quirky. though i do like aero, i have tried turning it off to see if that switches vista's view settings, it doesnt, so i leave aero on, no since in not leaving it on since i have two gigs of ram in this thing.Just turning off Aero gets rid of the transparencies, etc. Switch the theme back to Windows Classic, as Patio suggested. The same can be done for the taskbar to change how it opens.Quote from: Anodoin on November 30, 2007, 07:03:09 PM Just turning off Aero gets rid of the transparencies, etc. this i know, the taskbars been at classic since i installed windows vista, disabling Aero doesn't fix the layout of things, it just makes it look less fancy, my computer rated a 4.6 on the Windows Experience Index, so, aero isnt a problem to run. i would like to note that the below image is an example of why i dislike the system properties sheet, i liked the old simplistic ONE, not the new one with all these "What is this?" and "What does this mean" links for idiots, i wouldnt mind being able to swtch to a view that had all those links, incase i had to setup a computer for someone who didnt know windows for crap, but for myself, i liked the older simplistic views. you can read what the scores mean here: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/windowsvista/buyorupgrade/experienceindex.mspx?CPU=5.3&MEM=4.8&HDD=5.2&DWM=4.6&D3D=5.1 ironically my CPU is off the charts, yet, steam COMPLAINED when i went to re-install HALF life 2: death match saying i NEEDED atleast a 2.9ghz cpu (go figure, they didnt calculate in the fact that this C2D is like having a 4.4GHz CPU) i bet a quad core CPU would be like, 8.0. it should be funny to see my score jump up once i push this thing to four gigs of ram with a secondary hard drive installed ((yes, this laptop supports dual SATA150 hard drives, thought it was SATAII, but its only SATA150, oh WELL, good 'nuff for me). on another note, i am going to attempt to get another vista home premium disc, and re-install on here whenever windows needs to be re-installed, one that is not of any company (HP, Dell, Acer, Ect), so i do not have to deal with the dell logo's all over my windows interface. In the control panel under the Folder Options, use the Classic View instead of the one with filters and previews. And within a folder itself, you can disable the navigation pane. |

I did this intially to simply keep from losing things like my movies and mp3s, but soon found out that a great majority of the programs I use didn't have to be reinstalled to run. Photoshop, Reason, MS Money, Quake 3, Quake 4, Doom 3, Halo, the Need for SPEED series, and so on ran just fine, and have continued to do so through several other OS wipes. Solve : Vista and Adobe Flash...grrrr? |
|
Answer» My DAUGHTER has a Compaq P4-brand new with Vista installed. She's downloaded, installed ADOBE Flash, uninstalled, reinstalled...none of the flash sites work-it keeps asking her to download and install Adobe Flash. Is this a "Vista" bug? Thank you in advance. I went over last night and had same problems...just will not run flash content and keeps prompting for installing. There are known issues with the latest flash... Just a warning to all Vista users...though IE 7 may be a contributing culprit. Having treid a dozen times to UNINSTALL Flash and reinstall (even using Adobe's uninstall program/fix) Flash would still not work. Solution was to reformat and reinstall Vista and then, before doing anything, install all of the IE7 add-ons. Following that, download critical updates from Microsoft. The fun part was that this new Compaq came with Vista pre-installed. I used the OEM disc for the very first time and Microsoft would not let me authenticate or register online...I had to call. "Mandy" (not her real name-trust me on that) was nice to start with until I told her that, "No, this disc is not installed on another computer, I am reinstalling due to a problem with Vista running add-ons in IE7". She had me hold while she called a supervisor...then we had to go through the explanation AGAIN. Microsoft does not like it when you tell them there is a software problem (unless you want to pay for TELEPHONE support as I did ONE TIME after Xp was released). Everything now works well...so far ;-) I'm using Vista and never had a problem with Flash. I wonder if it's a Compaq issue.I suspect this was a Adobe issue. There was probably a registry key left (I think programmers should stop using the registry...) I did have problems with Adobe once before on Vista, but it resolved itself. I suspect it was a registry conflict with Foxit. Quote I did have problems with Adobe once before on Vista, but it resolved itselfStrangely enough, exactly same thing happened to me. Once in a while web page was asking me to install latest Flash (which, obviously was installed already). I just clicked OK, and everything displayed fine, WITHOUT any extra install. After a while, problem disappeared by itself.charliebrown are you saying you followed the directions and ran the un-installer and still had issues ? ? |

When I right click the cmd icon in start menu, and select “run as administrator” I get a message that states “This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. CREATE an association in the Set Association control panel.”If I select cmd properties and COMPATIBILITY all the boxes are greyed out including the “run as administrator” in the privilege level section. So I can not change any selection. which might be a problem for him.Let's see. Thanks Broni I have changed between standard and Admin. Accts. with same results. I have administrator privileges as I can run defrag, msconfig, etc. normally with no problems. It always ASK for permission to continue. I think I will try a restore even though I will have to update a lot of MS update files and things I have added over time. Thanks to all Russ |

Answer» Quote from: Allan on August 11, 2010, 03:43:52 PM You're very welcome. Stop back and let us know how things work out. I certainly will, and I plan to REMAIN active on this forum. Quote from: BC_Programmer on August 11, 2010, 04:00:42 PM There are several versions of the .NET framework and they are all independent- that is, they are not cumulative. Wow, just wow. All I really knew before this was that it had to do with Visual Studio, and it's comforting to know that it's safe to remove it from the start-up list.I have a tendency to be verbose. I think I'm rather infamous for it even. F***! Just starting having this problem again. Half of the time they simply go to some free help site- you know, like one, and get somebody to pretty much clean it for free, despite the fact that they are the ones getting paid to do it. Despicable. And then there is of course the whole STEALING of SysInternals tools a while back. Not a bunch I'd like to ever deal with.Off-topic but for the record I've walked into Best Buy quite a few times and known more about what I was buying than the employees. Yeah to get hired you have to know about computers, but many employees there have minimal knowledge. Anyway does anyone have any suggestions on which ones I should disable first this time? I should have kept more careful records of it... ugh I feel so stupid...Quote from: johngetter on August 12, 2010, 09:02:16 PM I wouldnt work at bestbuy with helping people with there computer programs if i was stupid. Look dude, even if you were trying to help at first, what you're doing now is just getting in the way of me getting my computer fixed which was... you know... the reason I started this thread. The fact that you're trying to push upon us that you are some computer genius just because you work at Best Buy only makes your advice to me look more meaningless. Solve : windows 7 64-32 bit? |
|
Answer» Ok, let me try that again, I should have proof read that thing before I POSTED. If you are running a 64 Bit OS with say 8 Gb of ram, when you switch to a 32 Bit OS, it will only "see" 4 Gb of ram as that is the max for a 32 bit system and use 3.0 Gb to 3.5 Gb. That could very well cause your performance to take a hit.Quote from: coastie65 on August 13, 2010, 02:18:35 PM Ok, let me try that again, I should have proof read that thing before I posted. If you are running a 64 Bit OS with say 8 Gb of ram, when you switch to a 32 Bit OS, it will only "see" 4 Gb of ram as that is the max for a 32 bit system and use 3.0 Gb to 3.5 Gb. That could very well cause your performance to take a hit. 3.5-4GB is not the maximum for a 32-bit system- it's the maximum for Windows XP home and Professional, Vista 32-bit, and Windows 7 32-bit. Windows server 2003 is a 32-bit OS and it can access up to 32GB of memory; same with MANY versions of Linux. the limit is actually an artificial limit built right into windows, it has nothing to do with the underlying architecture. That being said, I see what you mean. I could see it run faster witn a 64-bit version installed but I don't see how "only" having ~3.5GB could cause it to "run slow". On the other hand, kids these days think that 59 frames per second is jerky animation. bloody spoiled brats they are.OK. I am not familiar with server stuff. I was basing it on standard Windows OS's and the poster didn't specify the OS to begin with. That was the basis of my answer. Actually, it was in relation this by John Getter " My brother runs 64-bit version of windows. When he tried 32 bit his system would lag badly on anything he tried to do. So he went back to 64 bit system. So systems that are made to run 64 bit do better " and I assumed at the time he switched to a 32 Bit OS, but in retrospect maybe not and just swtiched to 32 bit IE. Who knows. Anyway as to the original post, as I had said in an earlier post, in Internet Options under the Programs Tab, first block, it says to not use IE 64 bit as the default browser, in both Vista and Win7. I think a lot of sites are not geared up for the 64 bit Browser and won't open if you are using it. Quote as I had said in an earlier post, in Internet Options under the Programs Tab, first block, it says to not use IE 64 bit as the default browser, in both Vista and Win7. I think a lot of sites are not geared up for the 64 bit Browser and won't open if you are using it. The reason it suggests not to use a 64-bit OS is simple- most content plugins don't run on 64-bit. Specifically, of course, Adobe Flash. Since IE 64-bit is a 64-bit application, it can only link to 64-bit DLLs. Therefore, all plugins will need to be 64-bit. Most other plugin vendors have done rather well and have released 64-bit versions. Adobe is the holdout. The flash problem isn't limited to IE 64-bit. Minefield (a 64-bit build of Firefox) cannot run flash either, for the very same REASONS. the dialog states that "IE 64-bit cannot be set as the default browser". This isn't a case of "can't" as much as it is a case of "won't". The reason was an actual conscious decision not to make it possible to set it as the default browser, for the very reasons I noted PREVIOUSLY- that is, lack of support for popular plugins. The only time a site will have trouble is if it uses flash or another unavailable plugin. a website doesn't need to be written specifically for 64-bit. It's fully possible to run 16-bit browsers and still navigate the web fine. after all, it's just a few files and scripts; the bitness of the interpreters of that markup and script is largely redundant. Quote from: http://blogs.msdn.com/b/ieinternals/archive/2009/05/29/q-a-64-bit-internet-explorer.aspx Q: Why isn't 64bit IE the default browser? Why can't I set the 64bit version of IE as the default browser? So, the summary is this: the downside of using 64-bit IE is that fewer addons and toolbars and so forth can run. The upside of this is that fewer addons and toolbars and so forth can run. Yup. There are some that do like their add ons though. I prefer to run as few as possible.Quote So, the summary is this: Shoot, in my case it is a moot point anyway. I have IE 8 in here, but I use Verizon w/ MSN Premium service and it uses a hybrid browser called MSN Explorer. |

Solve : Vista Catastrophic Failure & No Start Up?? |
|
Answer» So here's the deal, the computer won't start up. It automatically goes to the Startup Repair, but none of the options will do anything. It just restarts itself and goes back to the same page. I have tried loading normally, in safe mode, last known good configuration, etc. There are no available restoration points shown. After disabling the computer from shutting down immediately on system failure I got a blue screen that says: System Failure Catastrophic Failure (0x 8000FFFF) The initial SESSION process or system process terminated unexpectedly with a status of (0x00000000) (0xc0000001 0x0010042c). The system has been shut down. The error details given in startup repair are: Problem event name: StartupRepairV2 Problem signature 01: AutoFailover Problem signature 02: 6.0.6000.16386.6.0.18000 Problem signature 03: 6 Problem signature 04: 786444 Problem signature 05: CorruptRegistry Problem signature 06: - Problem signature 07: 3221225804 Problem signature 08: 3 Problem signature 09: RollbackRegister Problem signature 10: 0 OS Version: 60.6000.2.0.0.256.1 Locale ID: 1033 The computer isn't mine, it's my boyfriends so I'm not sure exactly what the specs are on the comp itself. I just know its Windows Vista home edition, and that's about it. Another big issue is that they don't have any of the Windows discs, apparently Future Shop told them they wouldn't need them Is there anything we can do other than go out and buy a new Windows system and REINSTALL? OK so your computer would have come with a 'recovery partition' on the hard drive, this as you suggests is not available. CONTACT your vendor and request a boot disk. There is no reason they should not provide this. Also before you do that is the computer under a warranty? |

Solve : Limited access of Internet?? |

Answer» So I tried to connect to the Internet this morning but I couldn't it SAYS that I have a limited access. D: I've been SEARCHING for 1 hour and still I don't know what to do. My router is called dlink and I'm using a toshiba laptop and it's window seven. Any suggestions?WHAT says that you have limited access?Quote from: Allan on August 14, 2010, 03:23:43 PM WHAT says that you have limited access? My internet connection. Try bypassing the router and CONNECTING to the modem. Do you have a connection that way?I'd follow Allen's suggestion first. I've never seen that error message. It must be something from your ISP. Who is your ISP, and have you contacted them?Quote from: rthompson80819 on August 14, 2010, 03:56:18 PM I've never seen that error message. It must be something from your ISP. When you can access the LAN but not the WAN, windows states that your connection has "Limited access" when you hover the mouse over the icon in the taskbar. It also displays a bubble telling you as much, depending on the type of connection. |

Solve : Microsoft 7? |
|
Answer» I brought my computer and it had microsoft 7 installed. Now I am getting a message saying it is not genuine, I can't get in touch with the man I brought it from. Any suggestions.Sorry to hear about your dilemma. The only suggestion I can make is buy a legitimate copy of win 7. However, you might also call Microsoft and explain this to them. I believe, in some situations, they will ISSUE a valid product key to you so that you can legally use your edition of Windows. Info at HTTP://support.microsoft.com/kb/295539 may be helpful in contacting MS.And also this a lesson in purchasing computers from third party people. If you don't have the know how to check if everything is legit on a computer from a private seller then don't purchase it. Ware did you buy this Computer? Impeccable spelling there...... and punctuation. ¡Carlos Pendejo! Is this Billrich as well? Appears to be...I called him Carlos Mierdador which he doesn't seem to have picked up on. Solve : "Users" File Problem? |
|
Answer» Today, I took a look in my "Users" file (C:\Users). Usually, it would contain a folder for every user on the computer. This was not the CASE. When I looked in the folder today, the file for my account (the only one on the system) was missing. There are three other folders in the file [Default (hidden), Mcx1 (Does anyone know what this is?), and Public]. I know for a fact that my user file is not hidden because I have configured Windows to show hidden files. I don't THINK this affects my computer at all because I still have all of my files and I can still access them all. Also, I should ADD that when I viewed the properties of a random Word document on my desktop, the target was "C:\Users\[user name]\..." which means the computer can still access the folder. It's not a big deal, I'd just like to know what happened. I have a Dell Inspiron 530 running Vista Home Premium (if that helps with anything). Thanks in advance.Have you ever had XBox set up on this computer?

Solve : Unable to Re-Install IE8? |
|
Answer» I un-installed IE8 awhile back because I use Chrome as my default, but it turns out many sites require IE for job applications and do not support other browsers. especially the version originally packaged with a particular version of Windows, is somewhat tightly integrated into the Windows OS. This I agree with, but I thought I should mention that this stands despite the "warnings" by oh so many self-proclaimed "experts" on the subject who say that it's "easy" to separate the two, and then they give you a detailed 200 step procedure you can use to do so. What they fail to mention is of course that you lose quite a lot of features. Some of them might make a passing reference of the form "once you've removed it, you will lose a few features, like single click to open in explorer, but nothing you will miss". Which is a clear indication that despite dictating HUNDREDS of steps to separate IE and windows, they've never actually done it themselves. Internet Explorer is really just a shell around any number of components that are used and depended on by windows itself- the DHTML component, for example, is used extensively for the help and support modules as well as for the help files of other programs. If you were to remove IE entirely then you would no longer be able to view the help files for any program at all. To me this is something that would bear mention on said pages. In fact there are any number of completely unforeseen consequences to literal removal of IE, involving any number of UI elements and their respective features. programs who try to use these features under the silly assumption that people won't go diddling about with core OS components may not work correctly, if at all. |

Solve : C: Drive Not Reporting Proper Disk Space Post Defraggler Defragging? |
|
Answer» Quote from: talontromper on August 11, 2010, 06:49:39 PM I had this problem a while back with vista. I used a system restore to solve my problem. Idk if you want to do that or not, how long have you had this particular problem? Another THING i did was i stopped using defraggler cause I thought that it was the cause too, i SWITCHED to auslogics disk defrag. In my opinion it is a superior program to defraggler and after the switch and the restore i had no problems. I think I will switch. Defraggler doesn't seem to be an especially good program. Also, I know that Chkdsk and Sequoia are saying the same amount of free space, but the problem is that they are reporting different total diskspace. Windows: 581 GB Sequoia: 409 GB Moreover, when I highlight my C Drive's contents in Windows Explorer, I get this number of used space: 312 GB (335,733,148,306 bytes 581 - 312 = 269. Which is what I should have on my disk... I am thinking a Windows Restore might be in order. But generally speaking, I've FOUND that Vista is a pain in the *censored* in succesfully restoring -ever- with its Windows Restore points. I'll give it a try for say...last Saturday.Quote from: BC_Programmer on August 11, 2010, 08:31:16 PM Remember that unless you empty the recycle bin, the "deleted" files will still occupy space on the drive, as well. The recycle bin is empty. I never heard that Windows Vista does defragmentation in the background. That's interesting. Quote from: talontromper on August 11, 2010, 06:49:39 PM I had this problem a while back with vista. I used a system restore to solve my problem. Another thing i did was i stopped using defraggler cause I thought that it was the cause too, i switched to auslogics disk defrag. In my opinion it is a superior program to defraggler and after the switch and the restore i had no problems. I've tried a system restore, and true to the feature, it didn't work. Two of 'em. ONe wonders why System REstore is an option when it is so unreliable. Are there any settings to make it moreso? As literally it has worked once of twenty times I've tried it for various problems. Should I try it from the Windows Cd? Okay, now what the heck? Now my C Drive on my computer says: 581 GB capacity, 238 free. It just added my 70 some GB back! This is good, of course, but -why-? Even Sequoia is showing it proper now! See below. This corresponds much more closely now to my highlighted C drive, too: 581 - 343 = 269. There is still some discrepancy, but it is only 30 gigs, rather than a lot more. Still what is wrong with this? [recovering disk space - old attachment deleted by admin]Quote from: DrSatanDracula on August 12, 2010, 08:03:59 PM Okay, now what the heck?Quote from: Carlos Medrano on August 13, 2010, 08:40:32 AM What are you confused about? Now everytime I turn on my computer it is giving me a different total for the HD's used memory. I know for a fact it listed it at 197 gb before my last turn off and now (without Dling of anything) it is at 193. |

Solve : Win 7: System Image : New Harddrive? |
|
Answer» I have a business laptop with safeboot encryption meaning I have to enter a username/password before the OS can boot. This would also mean that I can't boot to a windows recovery disk to tell windows to recover to a System Image if I'm not mistaken. If this is true then the rest of my question will be somewhat void UNLESS I can convince the folks to unencrypt my drive for a day while I build my image and recreate on the new drive. |
