Solve : Second Time Blue Screen Error? |
Answer» System detail: 3B is a difficult one to diagnose.. I'd suggest starting your troubleshooting by running a diagnostic on the ram. Running now through my Hardware Diagnostics Tool. Ran with all passing. Doing a memory stress test now. Passed. You might want to use a dedicated ram diagnostic utility such as memtest (http://www.memtest.org/)Quote from: Allan on August 17, 2010, 07:21:56 AM You might want to use a dedicated ram diagnostic utility such as memtest (http://www.memtest.org/) YES, I shall do that ASAP. Wanted to start with this just to see how it went, though.Memtest was clear of errors. Thanks so much for your help thus far!How long did you let it run ? ?Quote from: PATIO on August 17, 2010, 05:36:33 PM How long did you let it run ? ? 6 hours. It went through one pass and was 50 percent through the next. Also, when I tried to do a Windows Startup Repair from the Windows Disk I got this error message: No OS Files found on disk. Repair: Partition table repair. Error code: 0x490. This is obviously nonsense, as my OS files -are- on my C drive as I am having no problems whatsoever getting into Windows Vista. Or is this possibly related to the recovery disks themselves? Quote from: DrSatanDracula on August 18, 2010, 01:53:17 AM 6 hours. It went through one pass and was 50 percent through the next. Um, excuse me. It was 14 times then and 14 times today that it passed. Suffice it to say: My memory is fine.Regarding my Windows Startup Repair: I downloaded a Windows Vista Repair ISO image from http://neosmart.net/wiki/display/EBCD/Recovering+the+Vista+Bootloader+from+the+DVD and it showed I had no problem there. Still, do you think the problems in my CBSlog show that I need to fix something? If so, how do I do so? |

You could also try decreasing your page file (http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Change-the-size-of-virtual-memory). It was not an upgrade, it was part of the OS.I dont know if your problem is resovled but if not i would check if your netbook is running under a proxy. Go to Tools, Internet Options, Connections, LAN Settings. And if the proxy settings are checked, Make sure that it is not checked.Ok, i have absolutely no idea what did it, but it works fine! Solve : WINDOWS DEFENDER? |
Answer» I recently purchased a new computer with W7 preloaded. I am unable to ACTIVATE Windows Defender even in Administrator mode. Q: Is Microsoft Security Essentials designed to replace Windows Defender? http://social.answers.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/msestart/thread/5309cb8d-02e1-40e8-974f-0dcedb9ab9fdIf you say MSE is an AV program and WD is an antimalware tool. Then why I see this: Quote What about Windows Defender? Windows Defender is for spyware protection only. MSE is full anti-malware protection (spyware, virus, Trojans, worms, root kits). So, there is no need for Defender. On XP, MSE should uninstall Defender. If not, you can uninstall it. On Vista and Windows 7, MSE should disable Defender. If not, you should disable it. http://social.answers.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/msestart/thread/bf757e6a-e320-4a67-92bc-767e6acb26c4 So that looks like MSE already has the CAPABILITIES of windows defender included.Still, it's not an upgrade. One product is being replaced by another product, which includes features from the product #1. Quote from: Broni on August 22, 2010, 01:43:48 PM Still, it's not an upgrade. sure. I probably should have said "replacement" no "upgrade". Still given that both MSE and WD are free I think MSE is bit better on the fact it's got a bit more to it. Anyway, I guess this thread took a LONG enough turn.... for whatever it's worth hopefully OP (Jeffrey) got his problem solved to his satisfaction. |

Solve : Win-7 (How to Remove the Lock Icon from Documents And Settings)? |
Answer» Without going into it to much, i have a "locked icon" on my "documents and settings" on my C;\ drive The reason the lock icon appears is because the "Authenticated users" group is not in the ACL of the folder. Thanks BC Programmer. I didn't think this option would work...........i have since found out that this is not a real folder Quote The Documents and Settings folder in Win 7 (like Vista) is a "junction," or shortcut," to C:\Users (if you installed Windows on C). I think i'll give up on this one...........altering permissions won't get you anywhere. The second part you suggested......i'll leave that one, its just not worth all the effort for this.... I have got rid of the lock icon, but i now have a shortcut icon, so if this is a shortcut to C:\Users, and i am the only user , should i still be getting the access denied.............most confusing (folder options are set to show hidden files) I should be getting redirected to the C:\Users folder...............its so confusing i forgot what i wanted to access this forQuote I have got rid of the lock icon, but i now have a shortcut icon, so if this is a shortcut to C:\Users, and i am the only user , should i still be getting the access denied.............most confusing (folder options are set to show hidden files)This is by design. It's not a shortcut, it's a Junction Point, similar, but at the file system level. getting "access denied" is on purpose- there is no reason to access Documents & Settings as opposed to C:\Users; Programs can access them, but the junction point just redirects them to C:\Users. Quote from: BC_Programmer on September 03, 2010, 03:53:04 AM This is by design. It's not a shortcut, it's a Junction Point, similar, but at the file system level. Thanks again BC_programmer The initial confusion was that i wasn't getting redirected to C:\Users........ This is where i was going....C:\Documents and Settings\\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\ati9z0wb.default But now i know its in C:\Users How was one to know this....i am the administrator and the only user, and i have system files showing, so why did it not redirect me to C:\Users This must lead to other people getting confused over this, and thinking they have a problem like i did. Or is it just typical windows or microsoft PS It has the shortcut symbol on the folder, so this makes you think its a shortcut, if its not a shortcut why is there a shortcut symbol on the folder.......(just a thought) Yep. Roaming APPDATA: In XP, it's C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data In Vista/7, it's C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming Local AppData: In XP, it's C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Application Data In Vista/7, it's C:\Users\username\AppData\Local The junction points are to redirect older programs to the newer paths.Quote from: killerb255 on September 03, 2010, 07:23:15 AM Yep. ARR.....i think i must have been reading instructions for XP, when i was on my Win 7 computer. Guess what........i was Thankyou guys, for clearing that up for me |

Solve : missing DLLs? |

Answer» I have a Windows Vista SP2, 2G RAM, Athlon X2 core 2800+, I use Adware, Spybot, The Shield anti-virus, Malwarebytes I have a Windows Vista SP2, 2G RAM, Athlon x2 core 2800+, I use Adware, Spybot, The Shield anti-virus, Malwarebytes No. In fact, that folder doesn't normally exist in a windows install. On my Windows 7 machines it is located in "C:\Windows\winsxs\amd64_microsoft-windows-ie-ieshims_31bf3856ad364e35_8.0.7600.16385_none_be3c68d42aec01f7", and it is exclusively for compatibility with applications that access IE using older COM interfaces. It wasn't on ANY of my Windows Vista Installations or Virtual Machines. "gakpr.dll" wasn't on any of my machines at all. This means that both of these are installed. So, run sfc /scannow, which will replace the file (assuming it is an OS file) and failing that, reinstall IE8 (IE8 being the only version that comes with IEshims.dll, to my understanding. gakpr.dll is part of some other software program. Reinstall it. Either that, or it's a malware component. and gakpr.dl should be located at c:/users/%username%\appdata\roaming\bitrix security. I found through another thread from a different website forum that IEshims.dll is used in the Internet Explorer folder. I was given some instructions on how to get the file over to the other location but I couldn't understand how to do it from the instructions that they gave the person. I have been to several websites explaining that I can download the files but found neither one of them or else they required me to run registry booster which I don't currently have the money to get the license key for. I have ccleaner, and I ran it but I don't know how that could help me to get the file. What should I do? [/quote] |

Solve : Windows 7 & Mouse Pointer? |
Answer» A few months ago I got a new laptop, a Dell LATITUDE E6510 with a Windows 7 operating system. A few weeks ago I started having a problem with the mouse pointer, and it has got progressively worse. The problem is this--after I have the screen full for a while looking at the internet or an application, or after the laptop has gone into hibernation because it's been idle for a while, and then I close the window or HIT the "on" botton and then move my mouse pointer over the icons on my DESKTOP to click on something else the pointer won’t highlight any of the desktop icons, and when I click on them nothing happens. I can still highlight the icons in the ribbon on the bottom of the page (Start, open PROGRAMS, etc.) and when I click on them they open just fine. If I log on and off the problem goes away and everything goes back to normal. The problem isn’t my USB Logitech mouse because it happens using the touch pad too. Any help would be greatly appreciated. As I said above, the problem is occurring more frequently, several times a day at least now. |

Solve : Security Recommendations?? |
Answer» Hello everyone. I am happy to say I am not infected with a virus and don't plan to be. I am just curious, what do people recommend for a really good secure setup for a system? Have you guys done a service test and compared it to Avast! ?http://www.av-comparatives.org/images/stories/test/ondret/avc_report25.pdf The 2010 report shows that avast! has slightly better detection rates than AVG, but only by ~3%.Quote from: kpac on August 28, 2010, 04:24:23 AM http://www.av-comparatives.org/images/stories/test/ondret/avc_report25.pdf AV Comparatives rarely take into account how easy the interface is to use and other various non-trivial details that are for some reason ignored on such comparisons. Quote from: Me it doesn't matter HOW effective an AV is if the user doesn't care. a user, regardless of their AV, needs to be informed of some basic "rules of the internet" you cannot just slap on some so-called "definitive best AV" and assume they will be fine- they need to have some basic education. So- any "definitive best" AV will have as part of it the user- and since the user is part of the formula, the variable that results when you solve the "equation" may bring out a different AV as the "best" for different people.Win Patrol runs in the background and alerts you to any system changes and/or if something is being loaded as a startup item... In 6 + years of running it on multiple machines i have never seen it conflict with any other apps... Stinger is an on-demand Trojan scanner and should be DLoaded everytime it is ran.... You should as you stated never run more than 1 scan at any given time... And you should only use 1 firewall app... Safe Surfing !For a firewall, you can get Online Armor if you want a third party tool, or use windows firewall (if you have vista or win 7). Microsoft Security Essentials --> another good free AV. |

Solve : CHKDSK AGAIN? |
Answer» Hi Guys! It sure is good that there are forums where one can go and get answers buddy, but Bill Gaites shouldn't make 'em in the first place. shouldn't make what? security features that people have been asking for since windows 98? This is what pisses me off. The main "problem" with windows for years has been security, and people are always complaining that it's so easy for it to get infected. The reason for this was because by default everybody is an administrator, and also that the limited user account functionality of pre-vista operating systems was lacking (most programs refused to install or work). So Microsoft, for some silly reason, decided to enhance the security of the SYSTEM the exact same way that linux does, which is to make administrative tasks require elevation. This is UAC. It's no different with Linux (well, on the surface) which requires you to use sudo or for the desktop environment to display the graphical sudo prompt as necessary. Security is not free. It's not something that MS can add transparently and nobody will notice it except for fewer "infections". chkdsk requires admin permission to open the disk and analyze it. In this INSTANCE, it doesn't make sense to some people. But consider if it was another tool that was opening the disk to implant a Boot sector virus. They both open the disk for exclusive sector-based access. They both require elevation. In either case, I usually open cmd.exe with admin rights easily, start, type cmd.exe in the search bar, then press the application key (which SHOWS the right click shortcut) and select run as admin. easy as pie. It doesn't work on the command prompt item though, since that doesn't have a run as admin item for whatever reason.Quote from: BC_Programmer on August 30, 2010, 09:19:08 AM shouldn't make what? security features that people have been asking for since windows 98? Solve : Genuine (not illegal) product Key Advise!!? |
Answer» Hi Guys, A very simple and quick question, I have a laptop which was supplied by a company called Hi-Grade, this laptop has Vista Home Premium on it, It also has office (Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Publisher); and Kaspersky IS. IM going to change the OS for a while to Ubuntu, but I don't want to run dual OS's on the laptop. I was also unlucky enough to not be supplied with a reinstallation disk of vista, drivers or office (amongst many other APPLICATIONS) which I am currently downloading. I just want to ask a couple of quick questions relaing to re-installing my legal copies of windows, office, and kaspersky. Where do I find the product keys? For vista on the bottom of my laptop there is a nice official windows sticker stating "Vista Home Premium" "Hi-Grade Computer PLC" and a "Product Key". Assuming I unistall windows and reinstall it in a few months, will this product key still work or as its already being used and activated on my laptop now, will problems follow? I was not supplied the installation disk for office, however I do have a full legal copy of 2007 that STATES my name on LOADING, this was set up by Hi-Grade, How do I find out what version office my laptop is running and I assume somewhere in the registry files I could find my product key for this? Is this possible and if so does anyone know where I can find these details. Thanks In advance. i know its a tall order but Im not going to RISK losing all of my legal activated microsoft software if I cant find the keys!I have just download a package called "Magical Jelly Bean Keyfinder" it locates stored keys, does any one have experience with this? My question about installing vista again still stands though: Will the product key on the bottom of my laptop still work when i come to reinstall vista on this laptop or will it just be a case of once I have unistalled vista that I will not be able to reinstall it with my official product key (the one on the bottom of my laptop) again. The vista running on my laptop now is set to this product key, I assume (it was done by the manufacturers). The key on the laptop is the one you should use... If you have any issues after a clean install contact Microsoft....they have an 800# strictly for activation and they are very accomodating. Thanks thats not a bad idea, interestingly I have a new question, I ran this keyfinder software and its stated that my product key is different to the one I have on the bottom of the laptop?!? The laptop was recently sent off for a damaged HDD which was replaced by the original company, is this normal that the new code differs?I have now found my keys for; office and vista. Can i just check that if i unistall either that these official and legal keys which are licenced to me will work when i type them in next!?your keys should work if they are genuine and you have the right version of the software that the key is supposed to activate. if not working, then just call Microsoft and they'll get you on your way.Do i need to do any sort of special unistall before formatiing the hard drive so that MS know that im not using the serial code at the moment? You should be able to use the keys with no problem... |

Solve : If you qualify and are a student get win7 Pro for $30? |
Answer» This is a real treat for students, get Office 2010 and/or win7 Pro Academic Licensed CHEAP Not true... You just have to be have an EDU email address to qualify for Microsoft's $29.99 Win 7 for students deal.Quote from: reddevilggg on August 28, 2010, 05:56:26 PM If a Further Education student, you must have at least 15 hours of scheduled contact time per week for your course.Quote from: reddevilggg on August 28, 2010, 05:56:26 PM In England, more than 15 hours is full time. Sorry, should have been more specific. Link 1-> "Am I eligible" Item 2: Quote You must be a student at a U.S. educational institutionLink 2->DreamsSpark This site has no "terms" that indicate anything about wether you NEED 15+ a week or more nor does it mention anything about further education students. It does, however, as 2x3i5x noted (and you clearly ignored) allow you to verify through your school using the .edu email address that you get from them. Any limitations at the school itself- such as, for example, requiring 15 hours a week to have said address is a limitation of the school and has nothing to do with dreamSpark. You click on 'Am i eligible' and it bring up a PAGE that gives a list of colleges. Being in the U.K i click on the 'Going to university/college in the UK?' link. Then click on the 'Am i eligible' again which states - If you are a student, you must be enrolled in an education institution geographically located in the United Kingdom, JERSEY, Guernsey or the Isle of Man. If a Higher Education student, you must be enrolled in an undergraduate or postgraduate level course. If a Further Education student, you must have at least 15 hours of scheduled contact time per week for your course. I have a 'ac.uk' account, but do less than 15 hours. You dont have .edu email in England (thats probably why i ignored it)More about .edu and how it's used world wide. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/.eduWe're arguing semantics here....enough. Semantics? Is that an american phrase.........only joking.........i googled it. |
