I try clicking on a blue hyperlink in a WORD document (via the Ctrl+Click way) and I get this message:

What is the proper solution for this? I have googled and SEEN people say something about editing registry, I ALSO have seen people saying it's fixed by MAKING IE the default BROWSER (I have Chrome as default).

When I Ctrl+Click links in the word document, the webpage or whatever the link goes to should open up in a browser. It worked before, don't know what happened now.

Did you try with IE as default?yes. I also read some people had that problem when they had chrome installed, and an uninstallation worked, but I don't want to uninstall chrome.

I had 1 Gigabyte of ram installed on my computer. I recently added another Gigabyte so now I'm RUNNING in dual channel mode, and obviously have twice as much memory.

I had to reinstall Vista (home basic) and could not get it to work unless I removed the extra ram module. I don't remember exactly what the errors were, but they prevented Vista from installing. After the installation I added the module back in and it works fine.

Is this a ram compatibility issue ?

If so, how do you find compatibility lists for OEM motherboards, if there are any ? This is an eMachines T5088

The ram I'm using is Corsair DDR2 533 MHz, 1 Gigabyte each. Part # VS1GB533D2




Why did you need to reinstall Vista?I'm not sure what happened. But after I added the new ram Vista crashed shortly after booting and running some apps. I tried restarting but it was no good. Tried last known good configuration and it said the Vista kernal was corrupted and vista failed to start. A start up repair with the vista RECOVERY environment disc was unable to fix it.

I had linux dual BOOTED with Vista and even linux would not boot up. I ran memtest86 and ran hard drive diagnostics and the memory and hard drive turned out ok..Wow,, well Vista and ubuntu on the same hard drive is not what I would chose. I have seen to many boot issues with them on the same drive since they usually share the same MBR.

You can run a full repair install of Vista from the DVD and it may overwrite the MBR at the same time leading to more issues fixing that.

Not sure if you have back ups of files from both OS's or not but you may want to start fresh to save time and effort. (and put ubuntu on another hard drive)...just a thought and my advice from experience.

How long did you let it run ? ?

6 hours. It went through one pass and was 50 percent through the next.

When using the DOS box I can list FILES on my local drives, but when I connect to a network drive (NAS) and TRY dir I get file not found.

The file explorer will DISPLAY all files and directories but not from the DOS box. It WORKS when using XP but not in Windows 7. Is it the NAS box or Windows 7? Has ANYONE seen this before.Does the NAS show up in My Computer ? ?

Not running HDDs in a RAID config.

When I try to INSTALL from DVD, it gets to the "Where do you want to install Windows" choice of the two drives, when I chose either of the drives I get the error MESSAGE "Setup was unable to create a new system partition or locate an existing system partition. See the setup log files for more information."

1. How do I view the setup log files?
2. How to I create or force the creation of the system partition?

Note: This is the second build with the same model MB, CPU, RAM, P/S. I purchased two separate copies of the OEM OS. The other build, which I am using, went fine.

Very early on in the setup process you will see a prompt stating "Press F6 to install additional drivers....do so.

There is no compcln.exe in my Windows 7 installation. A WEB search showed that it is not INCLUDED. It is a Vista file.

mm winsxs takes ard 7 GB so is it common for a win7 os drive to take 31 GB (discarding winsxs) ?http://windirstat.info/

You might want to turn off hibernation and carefully get rid of hiberfil.sys (http://helpdeskgeek.com/windows-7/windows-7-delete-hibernation-file-hiberfil-sys/) to reclaim some hard drive space.
You could also try decreasing your page file (http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Change-the-size-of-virtual-memory). Before doing so, make a note of the current settings in case you need to revert. If things start getting really slow or unstable, you might want to undo it.

Actually, now that I think through it again, just move your paging file to your other drive. Set no paging file on drive C and 6gb or system managed on drive D.

Had to do a Recovery on my HP Pavilion Elite M9040N Vista PREM. OS and I cant get it to boot to Vista OS. Trying for the last 4 hours.

Try pressing the F11 key immediately after you turn the power on.

Of course, this won't work either if the hard drive has failed. Can you provide some details that might shed some light on the situation with your computer? Did this just suddenly happen, or did the computer show signs of problems developing over a period of time? If so, how was it acting? Besides possible abrupt SHUTDOWN corruption of windows and user accounts, frostwire is know for its ability to infect a computer. I suggest you run a malware scan like Mbam from malwarebytes website (free version) and then think about a restore of windows to before this happened.

and perhaps windows defender is already pre-installed on windows 7 so you are wasting your time trying to install an already installed software.Microsoft Security Essentials and Windows Defender are two different tools and MSE is not any kind of Windows Defender upgrade.
MSE is an AV program and WD is an antimalware tool.

Whenever I try to install itunes,sony vegas pro or adobe after affects i get an INSTALLATION error. Usually it will be error 1935 or a problem with microsoft c++ 2005 redistributable. Looking at your "Downloads" folder, I also suspect, that your computer may be infected....hmmm...

Is the file downloaded? If so, try downloading it again.

It means the file is corrupted. This can happen if:

1) You downloaded it from somewhere, and the download didn't finish. For example, if it's supposed to be a 20 MB file and it's actually showing 14 MB. Re-download the file and try again.
2) The file was corrupted on the server hosting it. Not much to do about this except contact the webmaster of the site.
3) It's a multi-part .rar file, and you don't have all the parts.

Why would you be downloading definition updates from in .zip form? And why from Softpedia?

What unzipping program do you use?
Did you try different program?

How do you know this?
The zip opens and extracts fine in PowerArchiver. Don't have WinRAR to test that but I don't doubt it works as well with this same file.

I checked "daily update" file. Unzipped, using 7-zip and WinRAR.
They decompress fine with both programs.

Without going into it to much, i have a "locked icon" on my "documents and settings" on my C;\ drive

I do know the information/folders...etc that is in the "documents and settings" folder is now in the "USERS" folder

I have tryed to alter the permissions to the documents and settings folder..........but with no luck, i still end up with a "shortcut icon" and access is still denied......... i am the administrator also.

But this "lock icon" is annoying me, even though i know where the folders are.

Is there a sure way to GET this locked icon of the documents and settings folder, i am familar with the registry, and wonderd if it can be removed from there.

The reason the lock icon appears is because the "Authenticated users" group is not in the ACL of the folder.

Right-Click the folder, choose properties. Select the Security Tab. Choose "Edit" In the "permissions for " dialog that appears, choose "Add".

Type "Authenticated Users" (without quotes) in the "Enter Object names to select" box. Click OK in all the OPEN dialogs, and allow it to apply the changes. It may give a "permission denied" error quite a few times, just say continue until it finishes.

That being said, the Lock icon overlay is a piece of information relating to the folder- it's saying "the permissions on this folder differ from it's parent folder". That is, you'll see lock icons on all profile folders (usually), because their permissions differ from the parent folder- a user named james can access C:\Users but not C:\Users\Tom.

What you are effectively doing by performing the steps above is saying that Any logged on user can access your account data, such as documents and so forth.



ShellIconOverlay info is stored in the key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\ShellIconOverlayIdentifiers; in this case, the "SharingPrivate" subkey, which contains a single clsid:

{08244EE6-92F0-47f2-9FC9-929BAA2E7235}


which is a clsid for the object factory in %SystemRoot%\system32\ntshrui.dll, which in turn contains the lock icon as one of it's resources (120, to be precise).

You could replace this with empty icons. I don't think you can delete them outright, since you'll probably cause a stellar crash whenever you use explorer.

Of course, the problem is, I don't know of a good resource editor that can change 64-bit executables, and even changing the 32-bit version is less then perfect, since it wil just be replaced by SFC, so then you'll have to copy the dll, change it using a resource editor, reboot into recovery console, copy the file into system32 and the APPROPRIATE dllcache folders, and then reboot.

The Documents and Settings folder in Win 7 (like Vista) is a "junction," or shortcut," to C:\Users (if you installed Windows on C).

It's there for backwards compatibility; software written to use the old Documents and Settings path just get redirected to the appropriate folder under Users.

I have got rid of the lock icon, but i now have a shortcut icon, so if this is a shortcut to C:\Users, and i am the only user , should i still be getting the access denied.............most confusing (folder options are set to show hidden files)

This is by design. It's not a shortcut, it's a Junction Point, similar, but at the file system level.

getting "access denied" is on purpose- there is no reason to access Documents & Settings as opposed to C:\Users; Programs can access them, but the junction point just redirects them to C:\Users.

Im ASKING this question on behalf of a friend he's running Win Vista.
Every TIME he boots up the narrator window opens in the bottom corner of his screen he unchecks all the boxes to stop the narrator, but when he boots up again it opens up and he as to uncheck all the boxes again.

If it comes back, restart your computer, at the login screen at the lower LEFT of screen you see the Ease of Access button. Left click and bingo a dialogue opens. There you can turn Narrator On/Off.

I am RUNNING Windows 7, using Live Mail for email and MS Office 2007 (Home and Student Version). I am UNABLE to open MS Word documents received as e mail attachments in . When I attempt to do so I GET the following error message:

"There was a problem SENDING the command to the program"

I have tried saving the document to a file and then opening it but the same message pops up.

There is no problem opening documents that are not email attachments and I am able to open attached MS Word documents with Open Office program. Also, there is no problem with Power Point Slide or Excel attachments.

Any ideas on what is happening here?read this link.

I don't think you tried.

For some reason 4GB of your memory are "hardware reserved". Might be your graphics card hogging it for some reason. THis could especially be the case if your using an integrated card. Check your CMOS setup when you boot the machine and see if there are any options to reduce the reserved memory for the graphics card.

This. Otherwise, your motherboard will be limited to roughly 4 GB regardless of how much RAM is physically installed.

I have 4 hard drives, and they are PARTITIONED as follow:

C: Win 7 (Primary)
D: Data (Primary)
E: Data (Primary)
F: Backups (Secondary)

I know primary is for bootable DISCS, i.e. operating systems. Now I'm WONDERING if there would be any ADVANTAGES in CONVERTING drives D & E to secondary, since they are purely for data.

A couple of days ago everything that I downloaded stopped working, so I had to reinstall everything. Everything seemed to work except my ITUNES download.

During the itunes installation PROCESS something came up and said;

OK so My account used to be Administrator, but my sister used Offline NT Password and Registry editor for some reason and when i turned it on. no one was administrator except a account called "Administrator" and when i log into that account to change my account back to administrator is won't let me. it just GOES back to Standard user. what should i do?save all your files and delete your standard account then create a NEW one Create a new account that is SET up as admin

(the asterisk being your own user name)

And highlight all the folders and transfer them to your new admin account.

Then delete the OLD account, or if you have a family member with a need for an account give the account to them.

I did a system reset or RECOVERY with VISTA ( I have a compaq 610). I have 2 drives, C and D.

Without thinking that it would be new formatted etc , I did not make a back-up of my pictures and docs ( I know ....)

howver I made a back up a couple of weeks ago thru the HP software on D.

If I now look at d it say 2gb of 10 free. Which means that their should be DATA on.... But when I click on it I see nothing.

would anyone know how I can see that data and what is on the D drive?

The "BACKUP" PROCEDURE you ran through, assuming you didn't burn any discs during the process, likely just backed up your data somewhere on the C: drive, not onto D: (since there would not be room).

A few months ago I got a new laptop, a Dell LATITUDE E6510 with a Windows 7 operating system. A few weeks ago I started having a problem with the mouse pointer, and it has got progressively worse. The problem is this--after I have the screen full for a while looking at the internet or an application, or after the laptop has gone into hibernation because it's been idle for a while, and then I close the window or HIT the "on" botton and then move my mouse pointer over the icons on my DESKTOP to click on something else the pointer won’t highlight any of the desktop icons, and when I click on them nothing happens. I can still highlight the icons in the ribbon on the bottom of the page (Start, open PROGRAMS, etc.) and when I click on them they open just fine. If I log on and off the problem goes away and everything goes back to normal. The problem isn’t my USB Logitech mouse because it happens using the touch pad too. Any help would be greatly appreciated. As I said above, the problem is occurring more frequently, several times a day at least now.

1. uninstall all the extra software you don't want

2. get a FREE disk IMAGING program such as Paragon Backup & Recovery Free Edition

3. use it to create a set of recovery disks that just contains the bare install.

Also you can then install all the software that you actually want and then use Paragon again to make a backup of your preferred setup. If you get a USB external hard drive you can save backups onto there at regular intervals (I do it every week).

My Dell Inspiron 9300 laptop was working fine in the morning, and when I returned home with it my COMPUTER started up with a wonky screen covered in a pattern switchng from horizontal to vertical lines and rectangular or square shapes colored blue, red, white or green. Huge STATIC is how I'd describe it. The Windows loading screen appears and then it goes black instead of loading my desktop.
I tried CONNECTING a different monitor and the same PATTERNS appear. I then tried removing the laptop monitor entirely and connecting an external monitor again and once again the pattern appeared and again I could not load Windows.
Could I have been too rough with the laptop and caused some hardware DAMAGE? Any help on this would be very much appreciated. I can't afford a new computer at the moment. Same issue in Safe Mode?

Ok so basically, I started my computer upand I noticed that the entire screen has blown up(not literally, just in size ) as you would have it if you had, say, bad eye sight so you could see it BETTER. My knee always SEEM to hit the power button on my tower. I was wondering if there was a way if when I hit the power button, my computer wouldn't automatically shutdown, but instead ask me "Are you sure you want to shut down" or something like that. I found out I could CHANGE what happens when I hit the power button in the power options. So now when I hit the power button it does absolutely nothing

I used to use registry cleaners but I RECENTLY got a bit of an issue with booting up because of one. I had to restore my PC due to such an error so I have stopped using them. This restore also stole my second boot with Ubuntu somehow...so I have a max of 600GB on this partition and the GRUB menu went away...

Either way, that is about as detailed as I can think of. PROGRAMS that are good, etc. I have Nmap, but I have little to no knowledge on how to use it. If I scan my IP address it freezes so I must shut it down so network security is hard to come by. I may not have any idea how to do it though. (I'm taking CCNA in college)

I have also added Zone Alarm as a firewall. If you don't mind me asking, and I don't mean to argue with you, I tend to not agree with AVG....the scanner seems to miss too many things.

it doesn't matter HOW effective an AV is if the user doesn't care. a user, regardless of their AV, needs to be informed of some basic "rules of the internet" you cannot just slap on some so-called "definitive best AV" and assume they will be fine- they need to have some basic education. So- any "definitive best" AV will have as part of it the user- and since the user is part of the formula, the variable that results when you solve the "equation" may bring out a different AV as the "best" for different people.

Myself- when I want to judge a User interface blindly- I just imagine my mother using it. Now, some of you may be under the impression that my mother is probably some sort of Cobol goddess or something. The truth is, in fact, that she can't even use a mouse... (actually, wait, that would fit the Cobol Goddess theme.. .*censored*). Anyway- she fits the profile of a total newbie to computers and the internet in general. For example, Firefox is not firefox, but rather her "facepage" and of course she cannot and will not connect her camera to any computer, because the moment you connect it to a PC every single picture is put onto a web page (regardless of what I, somebody who knows what they are talking about for the most part, says).

Since the User is such a critical COMPONENT of the equation, it's important to factor in the User interface of the Anti-Virus solution that they are coupled with. In my experience, AV programs often make "alerts" regarding viruses scary and FULL of technical jargon, often with cute little pictures of viruses.

They do this when the program updates as well. when my Mother was using my brothers computer, the AV updated; and displayed it's little "update" dialog. the dialog included the VERY SAME "scary" virus image (this was ages ago, with AVG) that is shown when a virus was detected. She was terrified that she somehow got a virus onto his computer or something. Not to mention the very hopelessness the image sent- she was even saying "I hope I didn't infect it, we can't afford to buy him another one" and other such talk. While one can simply say this is simply user newness to the entire computer scene, it's important to realize that AV programs are not simply marketed to the technical elite, they are also marketed towards people who have never used computers before and therefore really have no idea what an Anti-virus program does or how it works- all they know is that they "need" one because everybody says they do.

This isn't to say that they don't, of course. Really, I'm pointing out that simply saying for them to use "X program" as their AV solution is more software evangelism then it is a proper recommendation, simply on the grounds that the AV and the user are both part of the package; they need to work together. if the user is scared of the user interface presented, they may simply click the "X" button (which, in the case of that version of AVG, was for some reason mapped to "ignore") so even though AVG was detecting the viruses, nothing was being done to them simply because of the user.

To summarize- the user is part of the AV, in a sense that without a well-informed user, a AV simply may not be able to do it's job of eliminating and preventing virus infections. It is pertinent to educate users about viruses, and malware in general as well as how an AV works in order for it to be fully effective.

And yes, there are a number of users who could care less about how a PC works, or whatever, and consider it a tool. Well I think they're full of it.

First off, not all tools are intuitive. you don't grab a belt sander and instantly know how to use it and the various types of sandpaper and their ideal uses- you learn those things. Even a simple hammer has a learning curve where you gradually reduce the frequency of a smashed thumb. The people who think that a "tool" shouldn't require any sort of education are the same people who think they can dry off their cat's in the microwave.

This is what pisses me off. The main "problem" with windows for years has been security, and people are always complaining that it's so easy for it to get infected. The reason for this was because by default everybody is an administrator, and also that the limited user account functionality of pre-vista operating systems was lacking (most programs refused to install or work). So Microsoft, for some silly reason, decided to enhance the security of the system the exact same way that linux does, which is to make administrative tasks require elevation. This is UAC. It's no different with Linux (well, on the surface) which requires you to use sudo or for the desktop environment to display the graphical sudo prompt as necessary.

Security is not free. It's not something that MS can add transparently and nobody will notice it except for fewer "infections".

My laptop was supplied to me by a English comapny called "Hi-Grade" its called a Notrino, with an upgraded SPEC. eg. Memory, HDD etc.

Does anyone have any experience with this brand or relative drivers? ALTERNATIVELY can i save the drivers manually onto an external HDD, or is this GOING to be a nightmere?

Anyway, I found a strange .txt file in my C:\ drive I only know that it should not be there, but I don't know what it do or where it came from, could anyone tell me why it is in my C:\ drive and what it do?

I have no clue what Allthingskind is, so no.So... noone is that GOOD at reading scripts here, you know where someone might know?You have a cookie. Have you tried Googling Ekmompass? It is a geographic redirect service. Websites use it to make sure visitors get the right language version for their country. The user in this case was allthingskind.com, a web hosting company. As FAR as I can SEE there is no more information to be got from it. You can delete it.

Every time I try to open System Restore (I accidentally deleted my documents folder, and can't get anything back. I don't know if a system restore will EVEN fix that, but I'd like to try...) I get an error that says

"System Restore has been turned off by group policy. To turn on System Restore, contact your domain administrator."

I had a problem with System Restore in the past, but I just went to Control Panel > System > System Protection, and I made System Restore available to use again. I tried that this time, but oddly enough... The tab that I WOULD usually click to get there is gone!

The tabs that are there are: Computer Name, Hardware, Advanced, and Remote. No System Protection.

Here's a picture to show what I mean by the tab missing.

What can I do?
