Solve : Can't Reset Computer to Factory Settings?

Answer»

I work at a company where a consultant left his desktop tower behind after he was done with his work.  I asked the IT dept and they didn't want it and said I could take it home. The COMPUTER is an HP Compaq Pro 6300 SFF and has Windows 7 Enterprise.
The problem is the computer was setup to run on a company network.  When I connected it at home as a stand-alone, I didn't know the password setup by the consultant.  When I attempted my work login info, I got the message "there are currently no logon servers available to service the logon request".
When I switched users to "other users", a random username and password would not log me in.  When I attempted to login from another domain, I was prompted to either "log on to another domain by typing domain name\domain name user" or "log onto your computer (not a domain) by typing MC8377\local user name."  SINCE this computer is not connected to internet, I was trying the second option.  Still no luck.
Upon turning computer ON, I have used Esc key to get into startup menu as well as F8 to attempt system recovery.  No luck on either.   Start up menu has "return to factory settings" grayed out as if turned off during setup to prevent future reset.  And on F8 recovery option, I don't know the Administrator password so I never get passed that point.  I have also tried removing the GREEN jumper on the motherboard and putting it back in, but this didn't work either.
At this point, I wanted to know if there's a "nuclear" option to return a computer to "out-of-box" mode, whereby I can have computer revert to day 1, with login information to be setup by me.
Appreciate any help you can provide.
Thanks
You will need a OEM copy of Windows 7 to perform a clean install. Then wipe the drive clean of the companies data and install it fresh as your own.

You can also download Windows 10 from Microsoft and install that wiping out Windows 7 and after the trial period expires at some point in the future or you buy a Windows 10 key before then activate the OS. I have heard of some people using Windows 10 stating during install that they dont have a key and it installs clean and has worked for a while now. After a period of time though you lose the ability to customize desktop, but it continues to work otherwise. However at some point once Microsoft gets most on board with 10 I can SEE them issuing an update that kills off the ability to run keyless non activated Windows 10 installs. All-in-All you should be prepared to buy a license of Windows 10 at some point if going this route in which a key is then used to activate the keyless install.Still need help, betabrat2000? I'm currently looking into it but I wanna know if I should.? ? ?

Solve : BSOD "type" crash, But NOT "blue" screen, rather red or green or ...?

Answer»

Good day

I've had this problem for over a year now. I don't get the infamous BSOD Bluescreen of dead, but what I get is mostly either a Green screen, or a Red screen, occasionally just a white screen, and rarely a blue screen ... and then system just completely freezes, and I am forced to hit the hard reset button and reboot. This only seems to happen on the external monitor, the laptops actual monitor mostly retains it's last display, but the system is frozen,
I haven't been able to find anything specific that sets this off. It happens randomly, whether via browsing web on any browser, or just navigating within Windows itself. A simple click or right-click can set it off. It seems completely random. Sometimes would happen frequently, like TWICE in one hour, at other times it might not happen for a day or 2 or 3, then suddenly bang!
It ONLY happens when an external monitor is attached. And it's only the external monitor that changes colour (either green, or red, or white, sometimes blue or even just black), but whole system freezes, and need to reboot.
On occasion before, but not recently at all, I did get a Nvidia error code:3 " ... Nvidia OpenGL driver detected a problem with display driver and is unable to continue. This application must close."
But again, that was long ago, got it a few times randomly, but not recently while these issues have been occusring. Just mentioning, as I don't know if it has anything to do with it all.

I've read many threads and tried many things over last year, updating/upgrading latest drivers, downgrading to old drivers, trying different antivirus software, changing hardware display cables, tweaking and SWITCHING off certain elements of the Nvidia graphics card settings. All drivers and software up to date.
I am so frustrated with this, just want to drop this laptop on the rubbish dump lol.

Hoping someone might recognize this and have the magic bullet explanation and solution to solve and put this beast of an issue to rest once and for all.
Thanks in advance for any help.

Solve : Laptop Mic Level Keeps Going To Zero?

Answer»

Daughter has a Gateway laptop - NV57H15u.

Suddenly, after several years with no problems, the internal mike has DEVELOPED a quirk. The level control slider goes (left) to zero. If you go into CONTROL PANEL, then SOUND, then RECORDING, then click on MIC, then PROPERTIES, then LEVELS, you get the slider that sets the mike level. No matter where you set it, when you leave the window then return, the level has gone to zero. This makes SKYPE, and other mike APPLICATIONS unusable. Any suggestions to stop this problem???

Solve : Windows has disappeared??

Answer»

I am fairly computer illiterate so please excuse if these are dumb questions.

Woke up the other day and our desktop computer was frozen and could not open anything.  Tried to restart and GOT the blue screen saying that  windows could not load and went to the repair screen.  Got the message that it was not able to repair.  I ordered a recovery flash drive from someone on Amazon that had decent reviews so I assume it was a workable product?

When I tried to use the flash drive, it said that It was unable to load but that I could search for drivers.  I have no idea what I would be looking for so that wasn't really an option.

I have tried some online solutions from YouTube videos but none have worked.

It appears that my computer is showing no windows installations.  What could cause this to HAPPEN??

This flash drive offers a clean install of windows but you need the product KEY which I don't think I have.  I thought the windows product key was listed in "computer properties" but it says "product  ID: not available"

I have old recovery disks that I made but I am not SURE when I made them or if they are even for this current computer.

I ALSO have a windows upgrade the windows 7 cd with a product code but again, I believe this is from an older computer.

If you have gotten this far and can help at all, I would appreciate it.

Thank you so much.

Solve : "Ctrl" key problem in laptops?

Answer»

Hi everyone, my name is joy (or nickname YULAN) and I'm happy to have found this wonderful place. I love computers since decades AGO, however or sadly, I did not or cannot able to study this subject, until recently I applied a course in Unity. I should have so many questions but right now, the most important thing is that

I cannot use the "Ctrl" key on my netbook. I did research and found that other people are suffering the same problem, all are laptop users, different brands, different era, the most early case I read was posted more than 10 years ago, all Windows system. I agree with others' comment that, it's not hardware problem, because both "Ctrl" keys are not functioning normally. Sometimes it's ok, sometimes it's not, seems problem occur randomly. I am already lost hope to that, if so many people have the same problem, and still no one can solve it. I read it's a Windows update that caused the map of keyboard something. I hope at least someone can help me the next question.

The next question is, I somehow avtivated the osk, I think it's on screen keyboard, while looking for solution online, but then I find that the on screen keyboard appear every time on startup automatically, which I don't like to use it. How can I turn it off? There is a close button at the upper-right corner of course, but then it will show up again the next time.

PS: My Windows is 7, and I read Win 10 users also have the same issue. If there's no clean solution to the "Ctrl" key thing, I see no reason to buy any more laptops... even though laptops are more long lasting than desktop according to my experience. Such a difficult decision if buying ANOTHER PC in the future CTRL keys: try this: press, at the same time, ALT + ctrl + fn keys.

Disable on-screen keyboard, Windows 7: "Control Panel -> Ease of Access -> Ease of Access Center -> Use the computer without a mouse or keyboard" and uncheck the "Use On-Screen Keyboard" option and click Ok. Then, on the left panel there's the "Change administrative settings" options. Click it and check the "Apply all settings to the logon desktop" and press Apply.

CTRL keys: not working, just nothing happens or no difference, I even tried to press them and HOLD 10 sec.
Disable on-screen keyboard: I'm sure this is it, not restarted it yet but that should be it, thank you

Today I have pretty good LUCK, the "Ctrl" key worked fine for 4 hours, but then it died again, in between there's no special action taken, not launched new application or closed any, just managing photos and text, no plug in anything etc. After "Ctrl" died (or go to sleep) I have to right click and select copy or paste, it's inconvenience (I get used to it already) but not the point, the point is that some task relay only on the "Ctrl" key, such as zoom in or out while cropping in photoshop, oops! Limitation of function of a computer, please someone from Microsoft fix this, please.

Solve : Batch Files Now Prompt Open File Security Warning?

Answer»

I have written and have been running several batch files *.cmd on my WINXP sp2 COMPUTER for years. I have scheduled these batch files to run using windows scheduler.

Lately a "Open File - Security Warning" window POPS up each time these batch files are scheduled to run. The warning is "Unknown Publisher", which of course is me. The batch file will not run until I click on "Run". I assume this is now occuring due to an MS security enhancement that I installed. This is a problem as I schedule these to run while while I am sleeping.

How do I configure the batch files, windows, etc. to allow these batch files to run unattended? There should be an option that says "ALWAYS ask before OPENING this file".  Uncheck it before you click on Run.In addition to what Chris said, I'm assuming you're still running XP and not Vista.Unfortunately, there is no such option. My choices are either "run" or "cancel". See the enclosed screenshot. Yes this is occurring on my "winxp sp2 computer".

[cleaning up - attachment deleted by admin]Just a shot in the dark here...what are the permissions given to that folder with the batch files?

Alan <><  It is located on a win2k remote computer over a p2p network on which I have administrative privileges.Has it always been this same setup? If memory serves me, I've been running remotly located batch files over a p2p network setup for about 10 years. Of course the hardware and software has been updated throughout those years, but this problem has occured only recently.

Solve : old ways of locking files?

Answer»

many years ago I remember being able to lock files with a dos COMMAND at the c: prompt.

haven't had much need until now to lock them.

does anyone remember how?  You could make them Read-Only or Hidden (or system or archive) by using this code in Command Prompt:

+R = Read-Only
+H = Hidden
+S = System
+A = Archive
Code: [Select]attrib +(insert option here) "C:\(file path)"

Then again, that's pretty basic. But what do you mean locking anyway?I think, he means LIKE assign it a PASSWORD. I remember being able to do so on win98 i believe but havnt seen nor heard of anyone doing it for a while.

If anyone ahs an answer on how to password protect files on a computer (especcially for on Vista) pm me please. Quote from: lil_falco on MAY 01, 2007, 12:04:18 PM

Solve : Did I buy a lemon, or is it Windows Vista??

Answer»

I just BOUGHT a computer yesterday from MDG Computers loaded with Windows Vista Home Premium. This is a summary of my problem:
1. Installed DOOM 3, could not read file on CD (the CD was scratched, so I try #2)
2. Download and INSTALL Doom 3 trial. Comes up with a File I/O error.
2. Installed Age of Empires, Error 1335 comes up saying Data1.cab is corrupted. (CD again? So I try #3)
3. Installed Age of Empires Trial version off the Internet. Same error.
4. Windows Update cannot process two downloaded updates (saying files are corrupt).
5. I downloaded Counterstrike off Steam, that did work fine.
6. I CAME home tonight to find my computer shut off (left it on). Upon restart, it said a fatal error caused it to turn off. It then would not load MSN Live Messenger, crashing every time I opened it. It then suddenly began to work.
7. Got a blue screen tonight while browsing the Internet, but it restarted before I could read what the error was.
8. I ran Western Digital's hard drive diagnostic program, did not find any HD problems.
9. I ran Windows Memory Diagnostics from a Boot CD, did not find any problems.
10. Any suggestions? Is it my computer causing the trouble, or is it Windows Vista, or is it both???

Computer specs: Pentium D 2.8 GHZ, 1 GB Kingston RAM, 250 GB Western Digital SATA HDD, running on wireless network card, Windows Vista, etc.

Probably Vista. Try looking for Vista compatible patches for Doom 3. And if that produces no joy joy i would be CONTACTING MDG....

p.s. Don't let them tell you Vista doesn't run games. Something is amiss.Patch 1.5 was recently released for Doom 3, making it work with Vista.
Contact MDG, if it's brand new it shouldn't be having problems.
Some can be put down to incompatibility, others seem to point to a deeper problem.

Solve : Please help msn .com and or OE are blocking outgoing pictures?

Answer»

Hello,
I'm running windows xp, and I switched to qwest highspeed with msn in January. I have always been able to SEND pictures via email using the method of right clicking on the PHOTO and selecting "send to" then "mail recipient".  However, now all my pictures I try to send are being blocked as "potentially unsafe" files.  Even when I have tried to forward an email with a picture, it is blocking them as such.  This is very frustrating, can anyone help?  Thanks!  -HollyHolly;
What file type are your pictures?
Like:
.gf
.jpg
.png
?

Have you tried using MSN to send a Photo Email?I have been TRYING to send mostly jpg pictures.  The only problem I have with sending them thru msn photo is the reduced size (and quality?).  The main reason I am concerned with this is that I am trying to send a picture to a newspaper who is running a story on a hat drive I am helping with for cancer kids.  I just wanted to be able to send a good quality picture, and I don't know why this is recently not working for me.
The message I got said something about settings, that is what I wa hoping for help figuring out.  I will try to send the pic again and get the message to post.  Thanks so much for your time and help. _HollyThis is what it keeps TELLING me after the error about removing "unsafe files".

"Note: To protect against computer viruses, e-mail programs may prevent sending or receiving certain types of file attachments.  Check your e-mail security settings to determine how attachments are handled."
Does any one know how to adjust these settings?  Thanks!Normally the error message your computer presents happens only when you try to send a .exe or .url

Unfortunately, I do not use Outlook Express any more (I have Vista) so I cant exactly recall how to do this, but:
Click Tools, and then Options.
There should be something in there about attachments

Since you only need to send one picture, you might also be intrested in this:
http://imageshack.us/

It will allow you to have an image link that the news paper place can click on to view the full picture.

Not without knowing what browser you are using and what PROTECTION programs you currently have installed...

Solve : About to buy laptop with Vista. Should I be afraid??

Answer»

I am about to purchase a laptop. Seeing as Vista is on everything now, should I be nervous? I have heard alot of negatives about this system. I am worried about my current MS OfficeXP Professional not WORKING with this new system.
thanksPersonally,  I'd be very afraid !

the driver support is kinda like  "i see dead people"  ..........
some love it though ?Who is the manufacturer ? ?

Check to see if there is an option for XP...lots of manuf. such as Dell have caved in to demand and are still shipping XP units by request.be scared very scared..........

just make sure the programs you WANT are compatiableIf you'd prefer XP, TRY to find one with XP.
If you can only find Vista laptops, make sure they have the correct specs to run it well.
patio and unlovedwarrior have good SUGGESTIONS too - be careful to find out if your programs will run under Vista before buying it.
Support for HARDWARE and programs is getting better all the time, but it's still buggy.
Give it time.

Did you install Corel Snapfire on a trial basis?  And, is it still installed?  I'm guessing you installed it, and that installation changed the default program for viewing pictures.  I don't know how you change this back in Vista.  I'm wondering whether simply uninstalling Corel Snapfire would do it.Hmm
You bought a Dell, didn't you, wildwood?

Right click any image file

Solve : NTLDR-is-missing problem?

Answer»

Hi everyone,

(excuse me for posting this question as a freshly signed up newbie,
I'll see if I can answer some webdev-related questions in return)

I'm experiencing this problem with windows NTLDR and GNU GRUB bootloader.

I'm able to boot winXP just fine by telling my computer to boot from my first hard disk, but when I'm trying to boot winXP using grub boot loader (which I've been using for quite some time without any problems) the system keeps telling me that my NTLDR is missing (which seems INCORRECT to me, as I'm perfectly able to boot winxp as explained before).

on the internet I found numerous articles about a missing NTLDR file, but not one covering my problem.

============================================

I think it might be useful to know how I created the problem...

well I had a dual boot winXP (media center edition 2005) (located on my primary drive, 160 GB NTFS)
and Ubuntu (2.6.17) (secondary drive, secondary partition, another 150 GB EXT)

I used GRUB to select the OS to boot, and it worked fine.

then I recieved my vista upgrade DVD, and not wanting to risk my winXP VERSION I decided to install it seperately, thus buying a new hard drive, installing XP on it, upgrading XP to vista and then hope it'd work.
it didn't. at first, the XP installer didn't recognize it's installation partition, so I had XP install delete this partition (which by the way inevitably had to delete the partition in which I STORED my primary HD's backup image,  )
I formatted a new partition with XP install, NTFS again, and MADE it install winXP on that partition. install went wrong eventually when it tried to reboot, so I formatted it again for reuse, but on my systems primary drive, the boot.ini had been adjusted by the winXP install, so I restored it back to its previous state. as GRUB was behaving really strange (wasn't able to boot linux anymore) I reinstalled it to the MBR again using super grub disk.
after that linux still wasn't able to boot, and I found out that it had 'changed' the linux root. I was now able to boot linux on (hd0,1) whereas previously I had to boot from (hd1,1). since then the problem occurs, I'm not able to boot winXP from grub.
after one retry, this time winXP finished installing succesfully (i had the primary and secondary drives disconnected during install) and I upgraded it to vista. I'm able to boot vista from grub (root = (hd2,0); chainloader +1; boot)

======================================
things I've tried:

-my ntdetect.com, boot.ini and ntldr do exist and aren't corrupt. I even copied ntdetect.com and ntldr from my winxp installation disk to my C-drive.

-in GRUB command thing I tried several combinations, including...

root (hd0,0) <-- the should-be winXP partition
chainloader +1
boot --> will try booting something and then get stuck/loop endlessly.

root (hd1,0) <-- the partition winXP is most likely to be installed on, regarding the 'swapped' linux hd (see above)
chainloader +1
boot

root (hd1)
chainloader +1
boot -> forgot the result, didnt work

root (hd0)
chainloader +1
boot -> forgot the result, didnt work

etc. etc. I tried everything in GRUB with and without 'makeactive'.

==========================================

that was about all the information I can give you. If you need more details, just ask.
If one or more of you guys know the sollution to my problem, that would be GREAT!!

btw...
-I'm a linux noob
-I'm a hardware noob
-I'm a windows intermediate

btw2..
I paid for my windows CDs, they're very legal.

Thanks in advance,

C.Whenever you go to install/re-install an OS  it writes to the C:\ root...
Your efforts PROBABLY corrupted the GRUB loader in the process.
Back up what you need from all partitions/drives and start over. Thanks for the information.

I should've mentioned that the one thing i'd like to keep in tact is my old winxp setup including all installed programs etc.

(stupid) question: how come winXP can corrupt GRUB while grub is installed on a drive (secondary) that isn't connected during winXP install?

or has it been corrupted indirectly..Grub isn't installed on another partition...if i'm not mistaken GRUB has to be installed on an active partition of which you can have one per drive.
That would be C:\ by default.

Your Linux install is on another partition.

Solve : Installed XP, hard drive became F:?

Answer»

A friend just called me to inquire about a problem he has encountered.    This is a good friend, and I'd like to be able to help.    And, after he described the situation,  now I'm curious myself.

OS is WinXP.

He said the computer "crashed"  and they started over.   Installed WinXP.

Computer has a floppy drive,  two CD drives (most likely one is DVD),  one hard drive, and a Zip drive.     Zip drive is IDE.

There is only one partition on the hard drive.

He says everything works fine.

But,   WinXP is on F: .      The Zip drive is C:  .
Other drives are labeled normally.    A:, D:, and E: .

They would like to get it back to the way it was originally.    Hard drive being
C: ,  and Zip drive being  F: .

My initial gut feeling is to start over.   But before installing WinXP this time,  remove - disconnect the ribbon cable -  the Zip drive.

He is really hoping to not have to do that.     This is not a hobby/home computer.   It is used for business,  so already it has quite a bit of software re-loaded, and records accumulated.          It could be done,  but it is a chore.
Therefore,  I don't want to go with a gut feeling.
I'd like to be sure of:      What caused it, so we can learn something.        And:   To be sure that my idea will work.   Wouldn't be fun to do it,  then have one of the CD drives become C: !

That's the first questions:     Will my idea work?     and what caused it?

Next question:    Is it possible to re-assign those drive letters without having to re-install WinXP?
With Google, I found several pages to READ about this.   Apparently it is a common occurence.    One page even specifically mentioned that a Zip drive often causes it.      However,  the proposed solutions were all over the place, sometimes direct contradictions.    Thus.....  here I am here.

I would really like to explore this possibility in depth first.    Apparently,  it is not just a simple re-assignment within WinXP disk manager,   since the boot drive is involved.

Tried the search engine here in the forums.   Maybe I wasn't creative enough with search terms....   no luck finding previous discussion on this topic.

Looking forward to hearing about your experiences with this.
Thanks.

To change drive letters

Open up the run dialog from the start button or by pressing the Windows key and R at the same time and paste in the following:

%SystemRoot%\system32\compmgmt.msc /s

Click OK

Select Disk Management. Then right click on drive C (The Zip drive) and change the
drive letter to a free letter (for example Z). Then letter C will be free and you can assign it to the hard drive (currently drive F).

yes, only the letter changes. The system knows the drives by numbers internally.

I have found some sites that say that it can be done this way,  and some that say it cannot.....  for example:   http://www.tweakxp.com/article36890.aspx

Are you saying that the STATEMENT in   "Notes:"  at the bottom, below step 11,  is incorrect?

I've found some sites that go into detail,  that the only way to do it involves editing the registry.

Basically,  by using this forum,  I'm hoping to get to the bottom of it, and FIND the correct, reliable method.    And eliminate confusion.

Patio:    You wouldn't happen to have a spare XP machine laying around -  just for experimenting and tests -    would you?

Not until midday tomorrow...of course it doesn't have a Zip drive installed but i was going to suggest the user dis-connect it for this procedure anyways.
I seem to remember that since NT that Windows doesn't allow C: to be re-assigned.

My test machine has multiple drives on it and everything is imaged so i'll be able to replicate the symptoms somewhat but again it won't be TIL tomorrow.. Quote from: patio on April 22, 2007, 02:33:33 PM

That was my initial feeling.  If it comes down to having to re-install.
First choice is to avoid that.

If you, or anyone else,  would like to SEE some of the stuff I've found, and a couple of the procedures described,   here is a list of urls:

This one is interesting.    Any thoughts or comments on it?
http://en.allexperts.com/q/Hard-Drive-Problems-2113/Rename-hard-drive-Windows.htm

This one describes the Disk Management method within XP,  and ends with,
"You can not change the drive letter of your boot or system drive this way."
http://www.tweakxp.com/article36890.aspx

This one describes the same problem my pal has.  They even mention a Zip drive in a reply.    And it reenforces my intial thought.
http://www.pcreview.co.uk/forums/thread-489718.php

This source ought to be the one to use.   But I'm not sure the problem is the same as what we have.    The very first line is confusing to me.
"Warning Do not use the procedure that is described in this article to change a drive on a computer where the drive letter has not changed."
Changed when?  how?     during a reinstall?   or just magically?
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;Q223188
I am leery to follow these instructions until I hear from some of the gurus here.

This one flat out says,  "Windows will let you know if the drive letter cannot be changed for some reason."   when using the Disk Management method.
Then it details the registry method, and does not specifically say that you cannot do it this way for the boot drive.        Again, I'm leery of it until I hear more.
Then there is much discussion.
http://www.annoyances.org/exec/show/article02-024

This one involves using "upgrade" and XP setup.   anda "KB" article.    What's a "KB" article....?
http://www.annoyances.org/exec/forum/winxp/r1051759991

Disk Management method, and also says,
"You should not change drives containing system information..."
It doesn't say you can't,  just shouldn't.
http://www.tech-recipes.com/rx/506/vista_xp_reassign_change_drive_letters

And this one says to reinstall.
http://ask-leo.com/can_i_reassign_my_drive_letters.html

With this variety of things I've read elsewhere,  I thought it best to find out from some of the folks here,  if any of these methods work... or which is correct/best.

Willy,

I was unable to make this change in Win2K SP4 / WinXP SP2 or Vista RC2...

Since it is where system files reside i believe that for a change  Windows is smart enough to not allow this to happen...

I would suggest to your friend that he needs to re-install XP unfortunately...when he does do this he should only have his master HDD, a CDRom and a floppy ( if applicable ) hooked up.
After the install is complete he can then introduce his other drives including the Zip.

I suggest adding only one device at a time with a few cold boots between each one.

patio.
Patio:   First -  thanks for taking time to experiment.

He has two CD drives.   I see you are specifically excluding one during install.
Is that just to be on the safe side?
Or is it a known thing ...  a  no-no   to have two connected during XP install?

Lastly,   why more than one cold boot between connecting each device?    That's interesting.    You've made me curious.

That is what I suspect too.   But I still would like to exhaust the other possibility by hearing from someone that knows.

I'm glad to see you found this thread.

Have you ever heard of this problem before or had it happen to you?

I'm surprised that I haven't found it a few times in old posts.

Re-mapping a boot drive is never a good idea. Too many things to go wrong. I would not be even interested enough to try it.

Removing the data cable to the Zip drive is a great idea for the reinstall.

Solve : NVidia and Vista?

What is up with NVIDIA?  I've got a 7 series NVIdia card in my new XPS running Vista.  Everytime I login or switch users the desktop and cursor blank out and come BACK suddenly.   I went to the NVidia website to download the latest driver and during the install the INstallSheild Wizard INFORMED me that A.  I didnt' have the correct drivers to install the latest and B.  I wasn't running Vista.  Anyone else have this problem...Any suggestions.  The NVidia card performmance has been the only disappointment so far with this system. What drivers did you choose? Is this a laptop? 101.41, 100.59 and a couple others and non of them would install.  Yes, this is a laptop running VistaIf this is a DELL, you should only use drivers from the Dell site. No guarantees on others. This is a historical truth. The latest on this is...NVidia does not have any updated drivers for my GeForce Go 7 series card for notebooks.  The latest Nvidia driver version 158.18 is not compatible with the GeForce Go series and my notebook has the latest driver from Dell.

I'm going to have to LIVE with the bugs for the time being.Another Vista success story.

Solve : Vista White crash?

When using Windows Vista Home Premium - Screen fades to a partial white colour. All applications are present but are FADED to a soft white colour. Keyboard, mouse and windows is non-responsive.

Thanks for your interest in this here are the answers to the questions you asked.

First:
Did you install any software that Windows Vista marked as "Non-Compatible"?

All applications installed are Vista compatible to my knowledge. The only one's that may have caused an error is a Hp printer software. It was said to be Vista compatible but did not work correctly. This software and the printer have been removed. Skype was also installed however I'm not entirely familiar with it's use.

Second:
Do you have any Antivirus installed? (Vista provides you Antispyware/adware)
Third:

AVG INTERNET Security 7.5 installed(Listed as Vista compatible)

What happened prior to this incident?

PC was without incident for three days after installation. This problem has surfaced very often. It does not seem to matter what program is being used.

Installed board has NVIDIA GFX SUPPORT. Any ideas if it could be a GFX related issue. Am considering installing a GFX card in the hope to resolve this issue.

Think we've found out why this has happened.
The screen fades to white when the computer is loading or processing. The computer will freeze most likely to stop too many processes overloading the system and crashing it. It will sit there in this state for quite a long time.
Had this happen when installing Adobe Reader 8... it was in this state for 15 minutes.
There is no way to stop this problem that we've found. Just another Vista problem."The screen fades to white when the computer is loading or processing. The computer will freeze most likely to stop too many processes"
Yes
(This was covered earlier)

Not a Vista problem
problems with the software

Its the same as the "End TASK" window in XP

Solve : Copying and playing a .cda file in Vista?

Answer»

I have just upgraded to a new computer that is running Vista.  I was PREVIOUSLY running WindowsME, which believe it or not, gave me no problems.

Once a month, I need to work with a cda file.  The person who works with me records the cda file on a CD using Apple Garage Band.

I can PLAY the file from my CD drive with WINDOWS Media Player and WinAmp.

I want to copy the file to my hard drive and play it from there.  On my old computer, I could do this with no problem.  Now that I have Vista, I can copy the file to my hard drive, but I can't get Windows Media Player or WinAmp to play it from the hard drive file.

I would surely appreciate your advice on how to resolve this problem.ummm.. i dont use vista but, where do you save it? desktop my documents? You will probably have to bypass MS's built in garbage by PLAYING the file from the CD and capturing the audio to the HD. If you look at the file properties of the copied file, it will probably be a 1 or 2K file with a .cda extension. It contains nothing except the files location on the CD. I suggest using something other than MS's crap.Use a media player to rip the CD tracks to your HDD and play them from there.
CDA format is audio CD format, you will need to either play the audio CD itself or use, for example, WMP or Winamp to rip them to, say, WMA or MP3 files to play them.
Hope this helps.

Thx to everyone.Need...more...info...gasp

Antivirus & antispyware protection / service packs installed / when did it start happening / did it ever work right / installed any new software?

Alan <><  Oh Sorry about that !

I got SP 2 , It ran fine till today. I got Symantec Client Security , Windows FIrewall and I use Spybot Search and DEstroy for Adware Crap... Plus I don't recall installing any new software.

COuld it be caused by a XP hotfix ? I think one hotfix was installed lately
Was all of this software installed (Symantec in particular) prior to the problem?

Alan <><  Yes, Symantec has been on my comp since the beginning, almost a YEAR now.
Can you  boot into SafeMode?

Alan <><  No, it goes with the same symptoms. Any diagnosis DOC ?  "COuld it be caused by a XP hotfix ?"  Anything can be caused by a hotfix.

Do you have all your stuff backed up?  Sounds like you might have to do either a repair with the real Windows CD or do a wipe and reinstall.

Alan <><  Well, since i had taken the precaution of installing a little 20 GB hd, I used it to install Vista and got some files on it... thus I can make a BACKUP of my files. I dont have the XP disc though...
So you have 2 drives in one machine?  One with XP on it and a second with Vista?  Did the problem start after you installed the 2nd drive with Vista on it?

Alan <><  Sorry undead.fox, I have to leave now.

Don't go away as there are very able people on this site that can help.  Please hang in there, OK?

Alan <><  i'll sure do alan  thx a lot... And no its been since the beta release of vista that the 2nd drive is installed (around january).

thanks for anyone helping here,
DavidI suggest removing the Vista drive and going from there to reduce the amount of variables...patio, I really need that computer to be functionnable and XP wont boot, so I KEEP vista... I have tried rescue disks like BArtPE and it wont even boot from the CD ... could there be simply a problem in the bios ?
Do you have a real XP CD to do a repair install? Like Patio, I think disconnecting the Vista drive for now is a smart idea.

Solve : I dumped vista and loaded XP Pro.... NOT WORKING...HELP?

I have a new HP Pavilian A1700N that CAME with Vista home premium, my wife wanted XP pro on it so I dumped vista and loaded XP, now I can not FIND the drivers for the modem or the ethernet card that will install in XP pro. What do I do now? mattman....... Are you able to boot up XPpro ?     If so, go into the device manager and see if the ethernet adapter shows up ........ it may give you the model ...... and then we can find you the correct driver.
You might also try hp's online help from another machine and they should be able to tell you what driver is required .

dl65  Yes,I can get into xp pro, I'll try to get that info and get back to you.
Thank you!I don't find the ethernet adapter listed, the network adapter is listed, will that help?same thing.

Did you visit the HP site? That is the only place to start. All it list's is 1394 network adapter, and yes I did go to HP and the only download drivers I could find were for vista...I did try to install them on Xp but got the mes. "the XP OS did not support this download?"  Would a new ethernet card that supports XP pro work if I INSTALLED it? That is the only solution guaranteed to work. 1394 is firwire.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FireWireThank you for the info! I'll check it out and let you know how it turns out! Thanks again! We'll leave the light on.  The network adapter that you mentioned is an on-board (on the motherboard) and you'll need to install the chipset drivers for your computer. Go to (I LOOKED at the specs on the computer) so it's probably running an nVidia nForce 4 AMD chipset. I checked the HP site and they only showed support on Vista..so I can't say 100% but it is more then likely running that chipset and that will get the network adapter up and running or should..Read above    . He already tried the appropriate downloads and was prompted that it was NOT compatible with XP.

Solve : Vista works, XP doesnt? HELP!?

Ok, I just bought a new computer. it happened to come with vista  basic home. Since vista sucks in my opinion because of its many issues, i was going to try dual booting with vista and xp home. I sucessfully have INSTALLED and running both os's, but some of the drivers dont work in xp, but it works on vista. Basically When i run vista, all drivers work fine, but in xp they dont.
heres a screenshot of the drivers not properly working.

You edited and ADDED the whole flame section, don't be timid!

I thought that was what I succeeded as. I will try harder!

Anyhow, let know if that works. Some POSTING has been revised... if you dont like it, feel free to change it back.

Chances are, since the devices in this new computer are, well, new, you need to use a new OS.

Stick with Vista.
If you dont like its non-fisherprice look, change the theme back.

Unless you can find the drivers on the Dell site for XP.

Face it, its the future, 4-5 years ago, XP was big, and now its Vista. (Support is ending! Update before its too late!) Your obviously able to use the internet with Vista. If you can't find or use the ethernet driver from Vista in XP you will need to download it. Dell site is a good bet if you know the model number. If not check out your device manager for the model.
once you have an ethernet driver your home free. Good thing to do if your playing with drivers a lot is to subscribe to www.driveragent.com. Very usefull site.
Don't listen to what people tell you about Vista Home Basic. It is very inadequate for your average PC user lacking many of the basic features Windows XP offers.

Solve : Dual boot xp on a Vista computer using an external drive.?

Answer»

Hello
We would like to know how to dual boot a Vista Computer
with a XP Operating System, USING an External Drive to install
everything that we have on our XP Computer on to the External Drive and plug the external drive into the Vista
Computer.
Once that is done, do we have to make any changes on the
Vista Computer ?
How will we choose what operating system to use ?
Thank You
To do this, you need to make sure that first of all your bios enables booting from a USB device (i.e. an external Hard Drive). If it does, then insert the Vista Disc, and when it asks which disk you want it installed on, just tell it the external one and run through the installation as per normal. If another operating system is installed, Vista automatically SETS it up so you can dual boot, and you choose between Vista and XP when you are booting up - it will bring you to a screen which you can choose your option from. I think that's what your asking - your question is a bit unclear.Who can help?

Solve : format and reinstall windows Vista home premium OEM?

Solve : Vista--XP Stuff?

Answer»

I'm sure this question has been asked many times, but I didn't know how to look it up. I recently purchased a computer that unfortunately came with Vista. I have had nothing but problems when it comes to anything media that is not microsoft based. I have tried the software companies for support but they keep comming up short. I have many programs that work very well with XP. So, what I'd like to do is remove Vista and install XP. My question is: My hard drive has two partitions. One seems to be for the operating system and the other for everything else. Can I remove Vista from the one partition and install XP there without having any impact on the second partition or do I have to do a clean install with formatting the drive? This is kind of new for me. The only thing like this I have done is to upgrade WIN98 to XP. Any help would be nice. Please talk slow cause I have to take notes. Just kidding. Thank you.ccnz4enaz  ........ Yes , you may format the one partition without affecting the other one.

dl65  You could do this whilst installing Windows XP as far as I remember.Hey, THANKS. I will TRY to install XP without removing vista from the one partition. If that doesn't work I will format the partition. This is where the newby part comes in. Before this computer, I had never had the need for a second partition. Therefore, I don't have a clue how to format just one partition. Thanks again.OK you are getting ahead of things here...if the system came with Vista pre-installed then it is on the C: partition.
If you wipe it you will no longer have Vista period.
All Windows OS's need to write certain files to the root of C: in order to function properly.
So if you want to retain Vista and install XP to another partition that would work fine...
But normally in a dual-boot setup Windows likes to have the oldest OS installed first and then the newer ones in order...

So my question would be is what exactly do you want on this system and then we can proceed with the proper procedures.

Let us know.Alrighty.....I would like Vista to go bye bye. I just discovered how much of a dork I am. The other partition is my "recovery" partition. My bad sorry. That's what I call a dorkism. So, I guess what I need to know is...If I install the XP disc will it remove Vista and install XP or do I need to do a format and start over from scratch?I would do a format from a boot disk...only reason i say this is i have SEEN Windows balk at removing a newer OS to be replaced by an older one.
Example "Windows has detected that the OS you are removing is newer than the version you are installing"
Ok great thanks. I need to make sure I have the programs and applications I want to keep. And find a way to back up all of my video and music files. Foramtting will clean the HDD correct? It seems like a time consuming process, but I need to be able to continue to work with certain media programs that I can't get to work with Vista. Mostly because I recently spent a lot of money on updating and upgrading them for XP to find out that my old processor was not capable to run certain parts of the program. So, I upgraded my computer and got stuck with Vista.Acronis True IMAGE is the backup program i prefer...burn your music and videos to CD/DVD.
Current best deal on it is thru newegg...

Kudos to GX1_Man !Thank you patio. I will look up the back up program you recommend. Thank you again

Solve : Vista upgrade.. Is this true??

Answer»

Hi All,

I bought a new laptop just after xmas and sent off for the free vista home PREMIUM upgrade which I received today. I haven't INSTALLED it yet as someone told me I wouldn't be able to connect my laptop to the internet through my router anymore as that is setup  to my main desktop computer which has XP.  They said all the computers have to be vista for it to work.  Is this true?

Thanks for any replies,

Debby. No, not neccessarily. The Vista machine should be able to connect just fine.
Is the laptop wireless connecting thru a wired connection ? ?

The OS does not matter if the connection is working. That's good to hear   I searched about it online and couldn't find anything that said so but I did read of people not able to connect once they had upgraded although I think it was more to do with settings than anything. After looking online,  i'm a bit nervous about putting it on..   Am I right in believing once you have vista you cant change back?  Also, can i put all my files in my D drive and only put vista on C?  Sorry for the amount of questions!
in answer to yours, yes the laptop is wireless connecting through a router.

Thankyou for replying,

Debby.i have three computers running and two run vista and 1 runs xp and the are all hooked into the same routerThe problem Vista users are having as far as being able to connect is that some ISP's providing DSL service do not have updated drivers for their cheapo modems. Since you already have a connection you should be fine.

Quote

Am I right in believing once you have vista you cant change back?

No. Any OS can be changed provided you do a full format and have the proper installation CD for the OS you want to revert to ( i'm assuming XP here.)

Quote
Also, can i put all my files in my D drive and only put vista on C?

Sure. But be more specific about which files.

Quote
Sorry for the amount of questions!

No problem at all...Thanks so much for all the help

When I asked can i put my files into D and put vista onto C I was refering to things like photo's/ Music etc...  is it safe to do that?   Also, the laptop came with Xp installed but no xp disk.. Is there a way I can burn the xp I have on the laptop to disk before upgrading and use it with the product key from the sticker on the bottom of the laptop if i wanted to go back to xp? Save buying a new one.  If that makes sense

Thanks,

Debby.Just copying your current XP install will not do...it won't run.
What you need is an imaging program such as Ghost or Acronis True IMAGE to create an image of the XP install and then burn that to CD/DVD.

The problem with this though is you cannot create an image on the same drive you are imaging so it's not a good solution for a laptop.

The other option would be to contact the manuf. and give them your model # and ask for directions on how to create a Restore CD from the hidden partition.

Or they may send you a full restore CD for a small fee.

Solve : I NEED TO ERASE A COMPUTER AND INSTALL VISTA ON IT HOW DO I DO THAT??

Answer»

HI, I'M TOTALLY SELF TAUGHT ON COMPUTER STUFF AND I HAVE TWO TOWERS THAT I'D LIKE TO ERASE TOTALLY AND INSTALL VISTA ON, CAN ANYONE TELL ME HOW TO DO THAT?

Boot from the setup disc, and format the drive before you install. There should be an option to do so when you are asked where to install Vista. So, you've paid for two Vista software licenses, right?  Quote from: soybean on March 29, 2007, 01:28:36 PM

So, you've paid for two Vista software licenses, right?
A possible flaw. Installing Vista on more than one computer will definately, more than overall, cause it to freak out, and dissable itself in 60 days.

There should be absolutely no need to uninstall Windows XP.
Like Dilbert said, just put the disk in.

The format option you are looking for goes as follows:
You will be brought to a menu.
It will shows all your hard drive partitions.

Find the partition that has your XP instalation on it, and press "D"
then you will GET a warning
press "L"
SELECT the unpartitioned space, and press ENTER
The rest is very self explanitory.

Solve : Vista's multi coloured screen of death HELP!?

Answer»

These are my computer stats

Athlon 64 4000
2gb Ram
200gb hard drive
Saphire 1950pro graphics

I'm currently using XP Pro 32 bit
Just brought Vista home premium 64
I want to dual boot on my partitioned hard drive because I heard that games run badly on vista.
It won't let me instal from windows,  saying "Setup cannot run on this version of the opperating system" fair enuf
However when I try to boot using the disk that doesnt work either.
Setup works fine through the copying files bit but then it appears to stop after the bit with the green loading bar with "Microsoft Corporation" underneath it.
A few SHADES of light blue and greys come up on the screen in bands, a bit like those coloured sand things that little kids make (You can tell I'm having difficulties explaining this  )
The hourglass STAYS for a few seconds and then it appears to freeze up with nothing happening. Does anyone else have this problem? Vista 64 can only be installed over XP 64. Click the link, and scroll down to "Compatibility Issues and other Limitations":

http://www.winsupersite.com/showcase/winvista_ff_x64.asp

In particular:

"Those hoping to upgrade should be aware of a few other issues, too. 32-bit versions of XP can only be upgraded to 32-bit versions of Windows Vista. And Windows XP Professional x64 Edition can only be upgraded to 64-bit versions of Windows Vista (Business and above).

Since you have ANOTHER partition, you could (assuming this is a full install of Vista, not an upgrade) move all important files to the other partition, format the first one*, then install Vista over a clean slate. I actually don't recommend upgrading anyway, because leftover files from older Operating SYSTEMS can cause trouble. I always do clean installs with better OS's.

*WARNING: FORMATTING DESTROYS ALL DATA ON THE DISK/PARTITION IN QUESTION IRREVERSIBLY.

As an alternative, you could go to your STORE and request a refund, and purchase a 32-bit version of Vista, and not have to bother with moving files or upgrading. However, I still would back up important files, because any time you do anything with the Operating System, there's a chance you can FUBAR the disk and have to format anyway.

Good luck. We're talking Vista; you'll need it.

Solve : Vista and the Internet?

Answer»

Just recently got Windows Vista Ultimate and after installing my internet worked just fine, but after a reboot the internet stopped, it finds the "Internet gateway device" ( which is a Dlink ROUTER) but still does not CONNECT to the internet, after messing around with the NETWORK a bit it worked again, but yet after another reboot i have nothing and this time its not coming back. I am on a home network i connect through our router not directly to the internet like all the vista "create a network/internet CONNECTION" seem to want to do.

If anyone has any suggestions for how to solve this id really appreciate it, as ive gotten no results.

Dual booting the OS's and XP still works fine, why cant vista be as easy? click create network and its gg from there.Contact your ISP...many are having problems with their connection spftware and Vista.

Hopefully they have a fix.wow maybe i shouldnt get it.. we have dell vista connected it up worked ok the next day cannot connect to tesco broadband sent me a upgrade disc to download still wont work the disc was from sonic solutions we are trying to change broadbands thats another problem i would like to now how to remove the driver ?My internet sometimes gets disconnected (using XP Home) and all i do is unplug my for a few seconds, puts it back in and restart the computer. After that the internet is super, lolAll the more reason to wait a few months so M$ can work out the bugs in Vista...thanks to trusting people like yourself.  Bummer, huh?

Solve : Transfer Toshiba M200 tablet to Packard Bell imedia 3050 Desktop?

Answer»

Newbee here...need some advice.  I want to clone or backup-restore (basically dump!) my XP pro tablet laptop HDD to an old desktop, the former which I don't use any more thanks to a shiney new vista jobby.

Don't really need to do anything with the data, just need for it reference (contains business stuff). Can't use the Toshiba recovery disk on the Packard Bell (PB) as it appears to be machine-specific (thought about restoring OS on PB then transferring files) so could do with some ideas. (NB I've the CD BOX, CoA for Xp that was on the PB...but no recovery CD so can't do it that way either!!!).

Have a ghost image, checked & ok of the whole M200 disk.  There's a new formatted disk in the PB with no OS. Can you guys put forward some suggestions on how I could get the OS and data across and working without getting a BSoD.  PB 3050 drivers are AVAILABLE on manuf website, so need someone with a bigger brain than me to clarfiy the best way to achieve what I want to.

Thanks...You got a new laptop but you still have the old one, right?  So, why transfer the files on your old laptop to an old desktop?

What OS is on the old desktop?  If you basically want to backup your data files from the old laptop onto the old desktop, then just copy them to it.  But, transferring the OS over is not a good idea, in my opinion, and is likely to be a messy procedure.  You could EVEN end up with an inoperable desktop.

Also, why not transfer your data files over to the new laptop?

Thanks soybean...are you saying it can't be DONE..??

I note your comments on the other options - but they're not what I want to do/achieve - desktop doesn't have OS and I can't find the disk (see original post - was Xp Home), and I don't want all the old stuff on the new laptop....but I want it accessible on the spare desktop in the office should I need to refer to it.Well, it can't be done legally, since the OS on the Toshiba is clearly an OEM version and OEM editions of Windows are only legal on the original computer with which it was sold.  And, assuming you could PHYSICALLY do it, I believe you'd still have issues with re-activation of Windows because Win XP would behave as though it was installed on a new/different computer due to the hardware changes and it would stop functioning after 30 days unless you registered it, and you could not do that.  So, I'm not going to say anything further on the transfer idea.

Apparently, you've wiped the hard drive on the PB or the OS on it is simply not functioning and, for some reason, you no longer have your recovery CD that came with that computer.  Unfortunately, the only legal remedy in that case is to buy an OS for it.

I have a feeling we don't have the whole picture here.  Anyway, you can still access your old data on the old laptop.  So, I can't sympathize with you in this situation.

Solve : Windows XP Home Install/HDD problem?

Answer»

Is it possible to ruin a HDD through software?

I was attempting to set up a VISTA / XP home dual boot. I set up a new 50GB partition on the vista drive using disk management & SHRINK. When I went to install XP but XP didn't see the partition as 50GB but 131GB or 131072 MB to be exact (on a 320 sata drive).

I screwed around with volumes & partitions in diskpart, ended up dumping the Vista install. I think I got the disc back to its original size & shape of 320. Went back to Vista and used their install procedure to set the drive up again as C: 50 and D: 248 partitions. Went back to XP install but it wasn't seeing the 50 & 248 just this weird 131072 MB (for both C: and D: ) business again. So being fed up I just decided to install XP using the 131 size it was giving me but it's now in this loop where it then PREPARES to set up by copying files, resets, then asks me to do it all again (install on to what drive, format because there is *something* on there, copies files).

If I go back to Vista install and check it still gives me the option to install to either a 50 GB partition or a 248 GB partition.

Does anyone know what is going on? Is the drive screwed or is it an XP issue?

I've spent about 5 hours on this going around in circles and I'm going spare.Something you might want to read:

http://apcmag.com/5023/dual_booting_xp_with_vista

Hope you find it useful...lol, that's the article that got me into trouble in the first place!

Thanks anyway.

I made a XP + SP2 CD to install from, turns out my OLD XP couldn't see my new ST3320620SV HDD but SP2 can. After I did this it saw the disk partitions correctly but I now get "Error LOADING operating system" during install.

After I tried install again and using XP to reset partitions all is good.

Solve : Uninstall XP Pro - Install New XP Home?

Hi
I am hoping you can help me. This might sound a bit confusing, but here goes.
I bought a pc which had XP Pro installed on it. I tried to upgrade from microsoft eg; EI 6 but it won't let me beacuse the copy on here isn't correct. Something about too MANY users or something. So I want to take it off my pc all together.
I have a new copy of XP Home with the correct Product Key etc.

What I want to know is what is the easiest way to get rid of XP Pro and INSTALL XP Home? Can I install it over the top or do I have to remove XP Pro COMPLETELY. Will I have to re install my internet?
I have the disk for Xp Home, my internet installation disk etc. But no disk or anything for XP Pro.

Sorry if I rambled on..

Thanks

Make sure you BACK UP!!! anything you want to keep, music, photo, FBI watch list, CTU database...

All you need to do is to boot from your Windows Home CD, it will guide you through the entire freash installation, format your hd, etc. As FAR as the Windows Pro, I say forget about it, since you are using a legit Windows Home. After that you will need to reinstall all programs include your internet setup.

B.Also make sure you have all your drivers as well including but not limited to MBoard, video, sound etc.

You will also need to re-install SP2 if it is not part of the CD and all the MS updates. Quote

Hi Yes you can dual install I have done it on my notebook and it works ok, you will need to reformat the hard drive and partition it into two, I loaded XP Professional on one partition and Vista Home Premium on the other.

Solve : Cannot install TrendMicro firewall on Vista?

I have USING Win XP on my home computer and have used "TrendMicro Internet Security" as a firewall and antivirus for years.  I recently resubscribed for another year, downloaded it succesfully and I am quite happy with it.  Not long ago I bought a new HP laptop to take with me as i TRAVEL.  It came with VISTA as an OS, no choice there.  TrendMicro allows you to use their Internert Security 2007 on three MACHINES, so I downloaded it onto the Laptop.  However, when I try to install it, I get the message,  "A FATAL ERROR IN YOUR WINDOWS OS HAS STOPPED THE SETUP PROGRAM.  PLEASE RESTART YOUR COMPUTER BEFORE TRYING AGAIN."  I have spent a long timeon the phone with TrendMicro but have no success as yet.  Anybody have any ideas as to fixing this problem??   :-?You may need to update that package...according to TrendMicro it is Vista READY but the version you have even though it is 2007 might not be complete...

Check their site for a Vista patch.reminds me of that new Mac commercial for Vista.

hahaha =). No, unfortunately there were no little aliens to deliver vista to my door, I refused.

Norton 2007 installed and fully updated on Desktop.

Norton 2007 Trial, expired on Laptop. (Laziness)

Desktop: I swapped a Vid Card, RAM and a problematic HDD into an OLDER model computer running an Athlon 64 Mobo. Set the HDD as a slave, but primary drive failed to startup windows, which is when I attempted to reinstall.

Laptop: No new hardware upgrades.

Rundown:

1) First desktop started looping restart at windows logo, still needed information off HDD

2) Swapped RAM, Vid Card, and HDD from First Desktop into Second Desktop.

3) Second Desktop encountered an HDD Failure

4) Attempted to reinstall windows on Second Computer, encountered an error stating windows could not install because of a HDD Fault.

5) Unrelated laptop to former situation encountered same First desktop had, looping restart at windows logo.

You need to DLoad and run the HDD manuf. diagnostics on that HDD...unfortunately it sounds like it is getting ready to go South. Both though, my Laptop and Desktop?, I could understand the desktop. But why is my laptop having the same original problems, I would have chalked it up to a bad drive myself, except for the fact that my laptop went haywire. Unless it's just a really bad coincidence =(.Well if you used the same CD to install on both of those machines then that is the common denominator...There are times when more than one thing goes wrong with more than one computer.  Seen it too many times.  Coincidence?  Probably.  Maddening? Is there any way I can achieve dual booting at the same hdd which has 2 partitions?Thnx!
I have my notebook running two OS Vista and XP Professional as dual boot works fine, on the one drive. It has been partitioned into equal parts That is 20 GB each. I have install Vista Home Premuin, would not use Home Basic. In fact would never install Home Basic on any computer, XP Home  has more to offer than Home Basic (Vista).I had a bad experience trying to use both (even when each one resides in its own partition). When I TRIED to install vista I lost xp and vice versa. That's why I am sceptical! It shouldn't be a problem at all...Step by Step Guide

There is also a neat little program called Vista BootPro as Vista does handle the boot process a bit differently.

Any ideas how to access my windows xp again?Thnx! Is there a reason for putting XP on D: and Vista on C: ? ?

This may be where it is getting wonked.

All Win flavors including Vista need to write certain files to the root of C:  which is where the oldest version should reside.

My testbench machine is set up this way ( plus Win2K ) and it had no problem at all recognising all 3 OS's...

I'm given a choice at bootup towhich OS i want to run...
