Solve : Vista adVice, anyone??

Answer»

Hey,

I'm going to be testing software for my employer on a Windows Vista PC.  The software is designed to automatically connect to a VPN and works find in Windows XP.

I've heard Vista has essentially the same security features of Windows Defender BUILT in, and i'm unsure how that might prevent the software from functioning.  Is there anything of which i should be aware?    The only thing I can think of is that you will probably have to configure Windows Defender to allow that VPN connection as with other network CONNECTIONS.  They won't work unless they are allowed through the firewall settings.  The same goes for file and printer SHARING...they don't work unless you tell the firewall to allow them.

As far as the software...hopefully it will install WITHIN Vista with no problems.  Check the manufacturer or whoever wrote the program.  I'm sure you're aware that any program within Vista that accesses the Internet has to be manually allowed to do so.

Hope I'm not telling you something you don't already know. Thanks for the tips, Savior.  Yeah, i've been testing how Windows Defender reacts to the software.  I assume Windows Vista is using the same Windows Defender program, or perhaps it is different.  The program i will be testing is one my employer sells, installs and configures for our customers.

Does Vista ask every time a program tries to access the Internet, or does it ask once and give you the option of always allowing the program access (as does Windows Defender)?

I believe you have to manually give internet access. Note too, that VISTA has problems with setup for BROADBAND. Not that it can't be done, its just that most current setup programs offered by ISP's won't work with VISTA. If you have a problem here, you must currently go through your broadband supplier for a solution. It may be weeks or months before setup software catches up.Thanks, 2kD!

Solve : Stupid Windows Vista!!!!!!!!!!!!!!?

Answer»

Hello.
I got a problem with Windows Vista.
I just bought a new computer couple days ago and i didn't have any other choice but Vista.
I don't realy like this windows so I want to switch back to my favorite XP.
I did put the cd in and then press install Windows XP but then the error comes up and says somewhere that like it can't install it because I have a newer version then on the CD.
Well it says something like that.
Do you know if there anyway I could actually fix that and make it install windows xp?
Thanx.
Yep.  Format your hard drive.  I hope you've got a legitimate Win XP CD there so you can properly register it once installed.Format it OMG!!!
I hate that. That sux there is no other way.
Well thnx anyway. Since you are looking for a clean start why is format such a bad thing ? ?

I also recommend collecting all your drivers for that machine before proceeding.Well anyway I decided on formating the windows vista just don't know how to do it.
Kuz when you work on desktop and then try to format the hard drive it said that you can't do it kuz you are using it.
Is there some way i could do it?You cannot format the Windows partition from within Windows. You have to boot from a Windows CD to do it.well how do you do it?
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/316941Nevermind. Sorry but my dad helped me out on how to do it. I have installed Widnows XP successfully, and very happy.
Thanx to everyone. Quote

I don't UNDERSTAND why you would roll back.  Are you THAT afraid of change?  The future is coming, you can't avoid it.  There will come a point when XP is not supported any more, and SOFTWARE will begin (and already has) to only work on Vista.  If your computer is Vista capable, why would you DOWNGRADE?

Just my soapbox

-RockTo be truly future ready, shouldn't you explore Linux as an alternative? Is Linux the future of Personal Computing?  I'd place it more in the realm of Servers, since everytime I've tried to delve into a copy, it has always overwhelmed me with the sheer unorginization of it.  I dunno.  I just tried booting into Ubuntu 6.06 and it couldn't load the kernel, so I lost hope.

Maybe I'll try again.

edit: One of the biggest reasons I tout Vista as the best way to go right now is because of compatibility.  It's one of the reasons I hate Macs (far EXCEEDED by my general observation that "Mac snobs" are, in fact, not snobs at all, but actually just a$$h013s).  This is a big problem with linux, too.  There's not enough quality open-source stuff out there to offer customer support for a system like Linux.  It's growing, yes.  Exponentially, probably, but it hasn't even threatened Mac's 8% market share yet. XP according to the Mothership has another 10 years of support if not more,,,Outside of games, what can you NOT do on free Linux that you can with $150+ Vista? Bigger amrkey share does not make it better, it just means bigger market share (for a variety of reasons).

Solve : Will Open office run on VISTA?

Answer»

HI all,
Can anyone tell me if office will run on VISTA before I load it on or will it be safe to put a restore point and then try to install and run to see !!!!
Thanks
Ned     :-?It will work fine.
Make a system restore point if you want, it's an extra layer of security if something goes wrong.System REQUIREMENTS for OpenOffice.org 2 mentions Windows Vista with the parenthetical note: (enhanced Vista integration from version 2.2).  The page for Instructions for Downloading and INSTALLING OpenOffice.org 2.0 also mentions Vista.

So, I'd say go ahead with your plan.  Create a restore point first and then install it.  Let us know how it goes. Thanks Guys,
I am going to go for it
Ned
Thanks again. My copy has been working for ALMOST three months. And there is also a portable version for thumb drives in case you need to take work with you to and fro...

Available portable apps .com.And, if you have a U3 Smart flash DRIVE, you can get a version of OpenOffice for it.  Thanks, Guys
all seems to be up and running OK at the moment

Solve : vista & tesco broadband?

Answer»

I have just purchase a new Dell with windows Vista, having problems with broadband connection(Tesco) they have sent a new disc but not working with that either, assume its the Modem any suggestions? What does their tech support say about this? There is a known issue with Vista and broadband suppliers...

Have a Read Here...If your ISP uses MS-CHAP v.1 then Windows Vista does not support it.  Contact your ISP to see if they can fix it so you can use MS-CHAP v.2.

Does the error message you GET when you try to connect say something about security protocols?

thank you for that info, will check with my DAUGHTER  she is the ONE who has purchased the new computer with (Dell / Vista package).  Trying to help her resolve  promlem. She did INSTALL the ORIGINAL disc with her tesco broad band on windows 98, on her new computer , now they have sent her a new disc but it still wont work.If Tesco wants to keep her as a customer, they should provide tech support for her for free over the phone.  If they cannot help her, there are usually plenty of other broadband providers in the sea.  For example, i have four in my area (2 cable, one DSL and one satellite).

Isn't the free market grand!

Solve : Windows Button not working?

Answer»

Hey guys just today the windows button on my keyboard stopped working.  However everything else on the keyboard works ok.  I am using the keyboard as I type this MESSAGE.  I am on Windows Vista Home any ideas on how to fix this issue?Try another keyboard to see where the issue really is. And try that keyboard on another computer. You'll know soon enough.  Definitely be sure to try the above.  If you can access the Start menu with your mouse, then the problem is most likely with your keyboard as GX1_Man is suggesting.Well I know the keyboard has a problem lol...It would be one thing if one of the windows keys stopped working but both of them did so obviously a key stroke was made and it somehow disabled the button.  The board is brand new (Logitech G15)When I right CLICK the show desktop button in vista then go to properties it has a shortcut box which when highlighted will let you give the show desktop the feature of keystroking.  It allows me to use many different combinations when I hit various keys on the board but it does nothing when I press the windows key.Microsoft is already working feverishly on getting the first Service Pack available to fix many documented BUGS with Vista.  Try waiting until the SP is RELEASED and see if the problem persists after Windows Update downloads and installs it.Yeah I noticed a few bugs here and there mostly DISPLAY issues nothing bad but just out of place     Did they give a date that the first sp might be released that you know of?No, but i imagine you have automatic updates configured in Windows Vista.  I believe SP1 is to be released late in 2007.  Perhaps 3rd or 4th quarter.  I seem to remember reading November somewhere.

Solve : Windows Mail in Vista?

Answer»

This MAY be a stupid question, but I can't seem to be able to show my contacts at the same time as my folders in Windows Mail. In Outlook Express my contacts were always right below my folders. But not in the new Vista. For the life of me I can't seem to show them at the same time. Anyone know how?

Thanks. bomarinc   Open outlook express , click VIEW , then SELECT the layout option ....the SETTING you are looking for should be there. I do not have Vista so I can't be 100%  ...... but Outlook Express should be similar to the way it is in XP .

Let us know .

DL65  Sadly, Vista has Windows mail instead of Outlook Express and one can modify the toolbar in WM or where the messages display but I don't see the ability to contacts below the folders. Anyone have a suggestion?

Solve : how to make XP look like vista??

Answer»

i know there's some software to make xp UI look like vista, i already search google for themes, found alot of software able to do this, but some of it not free, some may come along with alot of add on tool bar, some not easy to use(no detail instruction about how to use). anyone can recommend some simple easy software or web site to download themes ?

thank!Themes especially those written by third party writers can wreak havoc with a machine so i tend to stay away from them...but have fun !the only decent skinning program i have is windows blinds, not free, but worth it.. not sure if there is a vista skin, but im sure if you look you can find one.Real men don't need skins.  I think this is funny because whenever I get a new computer, I spend the first ten minutes making it look like Windows 98. Quote

I think this is funny because whenever I get a new computer, I spend the first ten minutes making it look like Windows 98.

Oh.......why would you do that to your poor computer?

As Dilbert says:"Windows 98: A 32-bit patch for a 16-bit GUI shell running on top of an 8-bit operating system written for a 4-bit processor by a 2-bit company who cannot stand 1 bit of competition."

What a crappy OS.  Making it look like Win2K, alright....but Win98?Um...because I like how it looks.  Good OS or not, it's a comfortable look that I've been familiar with for years.  And besides, anything beats the look of XP.

Yeah, but 2000 just has this smoothness to it.  98 had all those dashed lines surrounding STUFF, mismatched colors, ragged fonts.  Very BAD GUI (aesthetically speaking).  2000 stayed with the same classic look, but it smoothed it out a bit.

Hmm, I rather liked XP, and I'm even more partial to Vista now.

But I digress...

It's different from each.
Looks more like Win2K than 98 though.
And I agree with everything you said - classic mode rules all, and I detest the look of XP, and Vista even more.

Solve : Gues who made the jump??

Hey guys, guess who MADE the jump to Windows Vista!!!

Not me. However, you wouldn't know it looking at what I did. Curiosity killed the cat I suppose, and finding Vista-style FireFox skins and Desktop themes was a winner for me.

http://img141.imageshack.us/img141/7594/image022nm9.jpgUrgh.
Just . . . urgh.Where did you find them?  Have you noticed any IMPACT on computer performance?

By the way, I just noticed Calum has 2000 posts.Indeed I have.
First 1991, the year I was born, then 2000, a coloured name and new rank, now 2007, this year.
No wait, 2008.
I missed it, made ANOTHER post before this one by ACCIDENT.
LOL.
Oh yeah, what theme is it for Firefox, and can I see a screenshot of that? Quote

WinXP

Calum, no real drop in performance for me. Probably because it uses Vista graphics, but not the Vista method of implementing them or some other thing like that.

When I boot, it starts with the XP toolbar, then after it boots up the Object Desktop it changes everything.

One gripe: The radio starts with boot, and you have to load the sidebar to stop it. (Start > Show side bar)Eww, I definitely don't like the sidebar.  The sleek taskbar is kinda cool, but I still prefer Classic.I turned my sidebar off the first day I had Vista.  IF I really need some sort of gadget, I'll turn it back on, but otherwise, it uses too much realty.  If I had more than one SCREEN, on the other hand, it would be good.

I don't like how the system tray, your icons, etc. don't look right.  It all blends together nicely in Vista.

-rockWhat can I say? The skins only go so far.

Actually, now that I've indulged myself in a sample of Vista's only good point, I've gone back to same ol' XP with the Royale theme. Now I have no desire whatsoever to own Vista.

(I know the systray was a little messed up in that screen -- rebooting got my systray icons back.)

Solve : PERMISSIONS AND CONTENT.IE5 DIRECTORY?

Answer»

I am running an Alienware desktop with MS Windows XP Prof SP2, Intel Pent 4 3.2 Ghz HT, 2 GB Ram, Nvidia Geforce FX 5900 Ultra, Internet Explorer 7 with latest updates, Adobe Acrobat 8 Prof, Zone Alarm Pro, Spysweeper and ESET Nod 32 Virus check
Over the last few days I have encountered a new problem.
When downloading a file on the internet such as a program or "pdf" file I get the following right after the file downloads but not completed...
"Windows cannot access the specified device, path or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item." The path shown in the window is: C:\Documents and Settings\(my user name)\Temp\Temporary Internet Files\CONTENT.IE5
I looked in the Content.IE5 directory and it contains misc  files you would see when you are on the internet. It does not show the "index" file.
I also found another Temp directory and it's path is: C:\Documents and Settings\(my user name)\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5   The content of this ..IE5 directory shows only and "index" file and nothing else.
Is there any way to correct my problem?
I am considering reformating and installing Windows VISTA if I have to wipe out my drive and start all over...but would rather STAY with what I have.
I also have run into the following: I tried a roll back to each of the ten or so points shown that are available. Windows comes back and shows that it is UNABLE to roll back.
I tried to do a Windows Repair but I get the message that my operating system is newer than my CD. I have a pre SP2 CD that came with my COMPUTER 3 1/2 yrs ago and I have the SP2 Upgrade CD from Microsoft although this was not used to upgrade. I downloaded the upgrade over the internet when it became available.
My computer is kept up to date with upgrades and should be "current"
I have run a full sweep of my system, defragged with Diskeeper 7 Prof, virus checked , and have run CCleaner. I also use System Mechanic 7 to monitor the system.

Any help would be appreciated.

Run System File Checker...
Start / Run / sfc /scannow and hit Enter...have your XP CD handy as it will ask for it.
As to the repair option i would travel to NLite's website and read up on slipstreaming SP2 into XP so that you create a bootable CD that includes all updates.
They have a free program that makes this task relatively easy....
Good to have though. Thanks for the info on the system file checker. Didn't help with this problem. Any other ideas? Is Alienware desktop a program you have installed?  Does the problem persist when you shutdown or uninstall this program?

Many thanks to all that replied and to the infinite amount of information on this site. Alienware is a computer manufacturer that makes cutting edge gaming computers.

My problem has been solved. I had the OEM Windows XP disk that came with my computer and the SP2 CD I got from Microsoft. When trying to repair the system, all I got was a message that said the OS was newer than my disk.

I found the "autostreamer" program and it created a CD that slipstreamed SP2 into the original disk. With that I went to www.michaelstevenstech.com site and found a "fool proof" article that tells you how to perform a Windows XP Repair install without screwing it up. If you follow it, you can't miss.

Now my system is back to normal and works as it should. I don't know what caused my problem, but the duplicate "temporary internet files\Content.IE5" directory is gone and the original directory works as it should.

Thanks again!Good thinking, Blue.

Most formats are only stereo sound, which can cause this.

Solve : Can I change MoBo, CPU, video in Activated Vista?

I have the retail version of vista. The install lasted for a day and a half. I made the mistake of activating it during the install processon the old system. I need to upgrade the motherboard, CPU and video card. Can this be done without having to buy a new license? I will be doing a clean intall after the upgrade.

Thanks

I haven't tried Vista myself, but if it's anything like the other Windows operating systems, then you should be able to reinstall and reactivate without any trouble. It's when you try to install on multiple machines that you'll have trouble.A day and a half?? Sounds like you need a FASTER harddrive at least. Quote

A day and a half?? Sounds like you need a faster harddrive at least.

Just a note: Be very careful when you upgrade to Vista. The MS Upgrade advisor tool misses a lot of your software and misleads on some hardware. Research on what you have installed is key. Take a look at what happens to your sound card apps and drivers and other hardware. Also Some software won't run at all. Be sure to check at all your vendor's sites first THEN upgrade. I found out the hard way. To get full functionality of my computer and what i am using it for I formatted and went back to XP and will wait for everyone to catch up.
My drive is a WD SATA drive and is Ok for now.I'm not planning on using Vista. Take qcpmike's advice and be very careful on an upgrade.  I've read several posts elsewhere that highly recommended doing a clean install after backing up your important DATA.  Their posts stated that, almost without exception, the upgrade failed or broke something.

I also agree with Dilbert.  I'm going to Vista in the foreseeable future.  I still run Windows 2000 Pro on most of my systems and don't have near the problems other folks do.

After the 3+ hour upgrade process I was in much worse shape. I REALLY din't have time to really explore the new OS. To be honest, I have been following the upgade path of Windows since 3.1. This was the first time since then that I have been disappointed. I think they released the code too soon. Too bad SP1 will be another 6 months away.

Iw will say that Aero works as advertised and the search function is very well thought out.I have never ever "upgraded" - always clean install, that's the way to go.I am running a dual-boot XP/Vista system. The Vista was installed in a clean partition: it started with Beta2, then upgraded to RC1, finally the retail Ultimate system which was a forced new install; the upgrade from RC1 to RTM was not possible.
I have had very few problems with either one of the versions, just a few driver problems; even now I do not have a complete HP-printer driver; it works somewhat...but that is the only one. Driveragent.com has been helpful finding the correct drivers!

Finally, someone at MS told me that with Vista you can activate one key max. 10 times .... after that you have to buy again.

Source ? ?Someone at Microsoft? The receptionist? Bill Gates?Actually from what i have read even a retail ver. of Vista will require you to install XP first therefore there is no "clean" upgrade path...

I have successfully fiddled with the workaround however. After all these years of torment from Windows, there are still suckers going for this Windows Vista craps.
There are many good options out there you know - Mac and Linux. Sign...   Some people just never learn.

You might just want to, Back up all your important files, and format the hard drive and do a clean install. Thanks for all the help. I'll definitely do that.If you need any help let us know. This should be FUN...When I changed over from XP pro to Vista Ultimate I used the vista installer to create another partition on my HD where I STORED all of my personal stuff.  Then I installed Vista over the XP partition and left the partitions there.  I now have an "OS" partition and a "Data" partition.  Works nicely.

You could also just move your data back onto the OS partition and then wipe the second partition.

But that was KIND of meaningless.  Just a note if you don't have enough room to back up (I had nearly 60gb).

Windows XP had a feature called "Compatibility WIZARD" which allowed a user of older programs that were compatible with Win 98 to RUN on XP.   Now I have Vista and some old programs that will only run on XP.  Does VISTA have a similar feature??   I have looked but no luck.   Will appreciate any help.  Thnks,  JIM  You can read--->This!

In addition to that link, I'd just like to point out that program compatibility is done EXACTLY the same way in Vista as it was done in XP.  Did you even try looking for it yourself before posting here?

-rockHey, thanks guys.  Guess it was a dumb question.  Truth is, I had forgotten how to do it on XP.  I just remembered that it couild be done.  I suppose I would have stumbled onto it eventually.  Anyway, thank you again, Street 1.  You not only gave me a good answer but you pointed me to a very helpful website of which I was totally ignorant....  And thank you ROCK for reminding me of my SHORTCOMINGS, of which I have many.  I'll try to do better next time.   Bless you both,     JIMHey, I was in a bad mood this morning.  Honestly, I'm in a worse mood right now, but you're right: I COULD've been nicer.

-rockROCK,  Thank you for your response.  I too, could have been a little more tolerant.  Ah well, we are all God's children but we are only human after all.    Have a really good day (and a good life).   JIM

Solve : trouble in vista city?

Answer»

Well I dood it.  I bought a machine that has Vista as an OS.  NOw I gotta learn all over again.  How many times? DOS, win 3.1, win95, win 98, win XP, n now Win Vista. :-/
Anyway, when I use WORD, I am used to going to  FILE > SAVE AS > etc.   I have n ot been ABLE to figure out how to do that with vista.   You don't get the same tool bar with word (Actually OFFICE 2007) as before.  (Maybe it's word and not Vista that's giving me trouble.)  Any ideas, anyone??  Does F1 work with that? It's Word that's giving you the problem.  They revamped it's look for the first time in a LONG time, and people have to relearn it now.

Just click on the "Office Button", the little round button in the top left, and that should give you most of the basic options.

Solve : Samsung SSD 128GB Drive running out of space?

Answer»

I have two samsung SSD drives.

The 128 GB SSD drive, was for the system files, \:C only but is now showing running out of disk space.

I also have a samsung 1TB SSD drive \:E which is less than a quarter full.

Is it possible to move stuff from \:C to \:EYes, but it depends on what you want to move.  You can move things that are currently in your USER folders (documents, pictures, downloads, Music) to the E: drive without issue but installed programs cannot be moved.  You could uninstall them one at a time and then re-install them on the E: drive.

In the future, when saving docs or pictures or whatever, SAVE them to the E: drive.  When installing programs, use custom install and install to the E: drive instead of the C: drive.HI Kendo

Yes it is possible to do with Windows disk tools but easier with 3 rd party disk tools.

There is 2 ways which come to mind depending on the importance of the files on the 1 TB.
I would backup the files on the 1 TB to somewhere else like a usb HARD drive. Then image the 120gb to the the 1 tb with say a partition size of 500gb.  Disconnect the 120 gb and check the 1 tb boots if it does then copy the backed up DATA to the other 500gb partition.
If the data isn't critical on the 1 TB then you may try resizing the  partition to the end of the 1tb freeing up space at the beginning to image the 120gb to.
One program which will do this is     https://www.easeus.com/partition-manager/epm-free.html
Thank you both very much for your help.

I will try both your replies.

Solve : Downloading Windows 7 Ultimate ISO File?

Answer»

Has anyone managed to download the Windows 7 Ultimate ISO file from the official Microsoft download site as per below:

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows7

I purchased the Windows 7 Ultimate disks recently from a seller on e-bay and they appear to be genuine brand new disks in the original sealed packaging. I prefer Windows 7 to Windows ten. That site above would not except my product key that came with the disks. I thought it would be handy to have the Windows 7 ISO file as well as the disks. My computer does not have a working CD ROM drive.

I tried a couple of phone numbers for Microsoft but did not get any worthwhile help. The first guy was in India and he did at least confirm my product key was genuine.  So does anyone know of an email address for Microsoft that works?  Tried this one but it was not suitable:

[email protected]

It appears that Microsoft do not want people sending them emails!

Quote

I dealt with a similar issue with Microsoft and when talking to India support after buying refurb computers years ago from Tigerdirect. However instead of them giving me a key that would work for future installations, they granted me an activation. From then on I cloned the hard drive and kept a good cloned copy in the computer disconnected from the computer so that the only time it is used is to copy its clean STATE to another drive. When done cloning the master drive is disconnected and the drive to be run in it is used.

I have yet to SEE Microsoft issue replacement keys for free.

Ebay, Amazon, and some other places ONLINE have sold Windows OEM Disc's that were not genuine but paired with keys from failed computers that make their way back to China etc. Check the Holograms on the Disc(s) to see if they act like a normal Hologram as for most the the Chinese bootlegs that look like the real deal from Microsoft INCLUDING with booklets that look genuine actually are fakes and the holograms are not sharp in detail and have flaws to them.

Another way to discover if the Disc is a counterfeit is that many of the Chinese Counterfeits self activate upon installation I have been told from others who have played with them. They have a script that cracks them upon installation to act as if they have been activated when they haven't. Some of them still have this script in the root of C: after installation. I have been told its a vbscript at the root of C: after clean installation from a fake oem disc. Thanks Dave for your reply. I will check the disks to see if the Holograms appear to be genuine, but please REMEMBER that my product key has been verified as genuine, so I reckon there should be no excuse for it not working on that Microsoft site. By the way, here is the exact error message I got when trying to use my product key:

"The product key you entered appears to be for software pre-installed by the device manufacturer.
Please contact the device manufacturer for software recovery options."

So I'm not real sure what that is all about, but it sounds like someone has used my product key before to activate their system!

This second hand computer I'm using has had both an Acronis and a Todo backup of the entire hard drive made with the files stored on both a Flash Drive and an external Hard Drive.  I suspect though that the Windows 7 Ultimate operating system on it was obtained from a bogus source.  That is the main reason I wanted to purchase the genuine disks from Microsoft. However, as you say, I might have actually purchased a very professional imitation replica!

Well if I can't contact Microsoft by email, I guess I'll just have to try by phone again and be a bit more aggressive next time.

That error message would be precisely what you would end up with if the Key in question was "salvaged" from a computer that had an included OEM product key. (eg sticker on the case). The Download site, however, requires a retail product key. This would seem consistent with what Dave was saying about eBay counterfeits. Thanks BC.  It is starting to look like I could have purchased a counterfeit version of Windows 7 Ultimate.

I noticed that while I was dealing with the seller on e-bay that his written English was not too good indicating he could have been Chinese!
However, I'll have to be very sure of my facts before I challenge him about the product and demand a refund.

Solve : need help setting up my computer for 1080p video, audio recording, animation?

Answer»

I have put a system together already!
Here is what the case has in it!

MOBO= MSI x99A SLI (not a Plus model)
Drives = 1-250GB Samsung 850evo, 1-1TB Samsung 860evo, 4-Samsung 500GB 850evo, 2-WD 4TB Black
GPU= 1 MSI GeForce GTX 1070 Gaming X 8GB
RAM= 32GB Corsair memory
BDR = 1
DVD = 1
PSU = Sea Sonic 1350w Plat. Prime
Air Cooled

As I said as my subject "need help setting up my computer for 1080p video, audio recording, animation"

Software = Audio, Studio One Pro 3/ Video, Cyber Director 16/ Animation, MOHO Pro 12

I just don't know what to do?

Any help and answers would be most welcome!!!

Thanks in advance
What CPU are you running in it?

Also with software learning on how to do animations and all that stuff Youtube was a big help for me when I was learning Animation in college for Adobe's software suite which is now on a monthly subscription plan, which reduced cost to college students who show College ID or other proof that your an active college student.

I unfortunately dont have experience making high end 1080p video, but from the looks of it you might want to get a video recording device that can record in 1080p or a cature card that is able of that if wanting to record your desktop environment. I use to use a software called Fraps to record game content, but that wasn't 1080p and it was a raw dump of video pixel data to HARD drive which made huge video files that had to be encoded to smaller format after recording done.

Yes I have watched and read a considerable amount of Youtube/other info. on the subject of Animation.

(Not to toot my own horn but I do have a somewhat creative gene within me, basically in all facets of Art...)

I've never been to college though in many cases I wish I could have gone! I'm to old now to go to college to learn what I have already TAUGHT myself even though I'm sure I would learn something (we are always learning at least I am) and a Degree or two wouldn't be bad. Que Sera, Sera
I've seen those mark downs for colleges and college certified, that's good since it cost a great deal of money to go to a good college for Art, I guess.

Yes I do have some 1080p recording devices and the Software (CyberLink 16) has built-in Software for Screen Capture and it Automatically reduces Video File Size if one would LIKE.

Trying to figure out where to put the files and bi-products?

Thank You for your response DaveLembke

You don't need to do anything special, just install the software you need then store files either in your documents/pictures/movies folders or put them on the separate drives if you need more space.

Personally I'd install the OS and software on the 1tb SSD. Use that SSD (or the other SSDs) for video files that you're currently working on so that you get good performance then use the 4tb hard drive for long term storage of files that you don't need to access as often. Ok I think I'm beginning to catch on but I
1. When you say "store files either in your documents/pictures/movies folders or put them on the separate drive if you need more space" are you referring to putting the documents/pictures/movies folders on another/or drive(s)?
2. Do I move the documents/pictures/movies folders to another drive and/or other drives prior to install of software? (not speaking of the OS)
3. Which documents/pictures/movies folders do I move such as... This PC: documents/pictures/movies folders or USER: documents/pictures/movies folders? Or both?
4. ?

Yes exactly  Lead me to the land of milk and honey! but

1. So I can use a SSD for each job such as... Drive D: 500gig video editing working drive, Drive E: 500gig audio working drive, Drive F: 500gig animation working drive?
2. Have any idea if video files create their own temp files and same for animation?

At the present I am installing the whole software(s) onto its each own drive.

It's really not an exact science, I'd install all software to the C: drive (installing software across drives will do nothing other than cause confusion in the future) then store files across other drives in whatever way makes sense to you, there's no "best" way to do it. Yes, don't get me wrong that is exactly what I wish to do, as you said above.
1. I install all software to the C: drive.
  Quote
then store files across other drives in whatever way makes sense to you

2. I guess that's where I lose it How do I get the files that I want to work on, onto a different drive to work on?

Again Thank You camerongray It's just like using an external hard drive or USB stick, each drive will show up with its own drive letter in the file explorer, create whatever folders you want on each drive and stick your files in them. Also bear in mind that just because you have all those drives doesn't mean you need to use them all, may as well keep things simple rather than storing files all over the place just because you have the drives.Perhaps an example based on how I use my own drives? I haven't created video content in years but it may still apply.

I have three drives. a 1TB SSD, 4TB WD Blue, and a 4TB WD Red. Simplified, the arrangement is pretty straightforward- the SSD gets things that need to be very fast. the Hard Disks get things that are very big. For example the HDD(s) is where I have my file hoard- installers, downloaded ISO files, Video files, movie files, music, generic unsorted downloads, etc. Stuff that I don't use constantly and which will not be affected by the lower speed of the HDD. They got onto those drives because I put them there or copied them there. (coincidentally, this is where I have some recordings that I intended to turn into videos but haven't bothered but also cannot bring myself to delete...)

Most software I have installed is installed onto my C: drive, the SSD. This way it can access it's software files quickly. My OS paging file is on my SSD, and while the only software I think I have with the settings you mention (eg. Scratch Disk) is Photoshop, I have that SET up to only use C: as a scratch disk- again, for performance since the two Spinning disk drives are much slower in comparison.

There are two things to consider here:

This is not all my drives though. Even discounting drives I have "in active service" in other computers, I have two Hard Drives, new in box, completely unused except to verify they aren't Dead-on-arrival- a 4TB WD Red and a 4TB WD Blue. They are specifically replacements for when mine die, since mine are starting to get on in years and it's always a matter of time before they fail. First sign of trouble, I clone the problem drive to the new one, replace it in my PC, and I have everything as it was with minimal downtime and (ideally) less risk of data loss. You don't need to install every drive you have in a PC.

Solve : Win7 home premium, Roght click contex menu, Brother L1500 laser printer?

Answer»

Whatever HAPPENED to my right click contex menu?  I used to have: copy, paste,DELETE,rename, save as, PRINT,edit. especially the print .
Example: when i am in a documents file now I have:Arrange by, view, sort by, group by, REFRESH, delete,SHARE with, new, properties. Not what I need or want.
How do I revise the contex menu or simply get what I used to have?It depends on what you right-click on. The menu changes depending on what you click. For example, if you highlight some text and right click on it you will get such things as delete, copy etc.The features on right click are set with registry keys, the easiest way to fix is to use system restore back before this happened. It's important when using system restore to check what programs will be effected, as you may need to reload/repair these programs.
Also this is a help in finding if an update or program has caused the problem. For example the restore point might say, restore point created when before removing PKzip.

If you need INFORMATION on how to do this, this explains how:    https://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/using-windows-vista-system-restore/The context menu you want is the one from when you specifically right-click on files.

The context menu you are seeing is because you are right-clicking on the background of the folder/view, not on any files.

Solve : Spillage or malware or idk??

Answer»

I spilt raro DRINK on my thinkpad and after letting it dry I turned it back on (didn’t actually turn it off as when logged back on things still opened); straight after logging on a black screen with white dots appeared for a split second, I also found for a bit my scroll on my mouse wasn’t working (don’t know if it was just for my browser) and searching, trying to close image on google images or clicking on a link opened a new window . After a short time problems went away tried logging off and back on and didn’t get black with dots for split second again. I’m writing this a short time after event I will update if I notice more weird things that may be related.
For additional info I have had my thinkpad for a bit over a month and no longer have McAfee.Okay, if you spill something over your keyboard you should turn it off and REMOVE cd or dvd drive if you have one, batttery if you can, if you cant remove the hardware or dont know how to and turn it upside down. And for precaution, not needed, put a few PAPER towels inbetween the keyboard and screen. And wait at least 24 hours, if not more. Also make sure the power cord isnt connected.

Actually had this happen to an old laptop of MINE, when soup spilled on the keyboard, did the above with the dvd drive/battery removing them,  (didnt know how to take it apart to take out the components let alone where they were to put it back together), it still worked just fine but had to USE an external keyboard, and yes i know this is offtopic in this paragraph.

As for the weird things, it could either be software bugs or hardware damage, or a mix of them. Or your computer might have been affected for a bit and getting mixed signals. From what you describe it may be a bit unreliable, and fail at any point but seem fine, but maybe not,  and there might possibly be hardware damage. Have you noticed anything weird or any issues with speed/performance/glitches and such? This would be handy to know, as this can help people tell if theres hardware damage or not. If ANYTHING (sorry for caps) such as glitches or weird things even remotely related or not related post them as this may help.

Also was what you spilled sugary or sticky in any way? That tends to be more abrasive on hardware.

As for supicions of viruses or malware, this is a possibility, and these also could be sypmtoms of that. But I am not really that skilled in that area except for scans and security to help prevent those infections, and identfying symptoms, so if i were you i would let someone else help in that area if that is the case.

Solve : Can I change SD card drive letter??

Answer»

I did research and tried to "click Start . In the Search field, type Partition. Then click Create and format hard disk partitions. ..." however, there is no "Create and format..." line in my case, it does has a pop-up window saying "... cannot activate Virtual Disk Service (VDS)... or connection is blocked by Windows firewall...". I then tried to turn off Windows firewall from Control Panels, but the result is the same. Or, if there is another way to change the drive letter, will be likely better. I want to use the same SD card to both my desktop and netbook, I need them to be the same letter but they are not, one is F and one is H, both Windows 7.To have a card/SSD/HDD retain the same drive letter between machines you need to give it a Volume Label...this is done thru Disk Management....
NOTE don't pick an early letter if you have multiple drives...start at MI feel like I'm doomed then, since no other way to change it HuHH ? ?  Did you try what was suggested ? ?Patio, they buried the lede on this one- the title talks about changing the SD Card Drive letter- but their OP then mentions how their Disk Management is inaccessible (Cannot connect to Virtual Disk Service)- they have much bigger problems than wanting to change the SD Card drive letter. I am just curious... is there no FUNCTIONAL disk management on both computers or is it just one of them that has the issue OP is mentioning in his original post???

If one DEVICE has WORKING disk management, then do the drive letter change process on that functional computer. Then go try to figure out the issue of why virtual disk service can't work issue and all that as described in original post.Sorry BC...i read it too fast. He could try a Repair Install maybe...
Do you mind me asking, but I don't know what these means: they, buried the lede, OP, and what is Repair Install?

I can find Disk Management in the desktop (Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit) which is now died anyway, so forget it. I cannot find Disk Management on my current netbook (Windows 7 Starter 32-bit), I only see "disk rebuild" and "disk clean up", it has no search field in the Start Menu at all, but I browse through accessory > system tools > no disk management oops

I guess Repair Install is install the system/Windows again from CD-ROM, I think I have a CD-ROM come with the netbook, but how can I boot it with CD drive? I guess is to press and hold which key(s) while power on?Win7 starter does not have disk management i believe...you can do what i suggested on another PC... Repair install is when you boot to windows and then run the windows SETUP through windows to basically do a fresh installation of windows without touching your current settings, files, APPS, etc. to try to fix windows issues before you go the reformat/clean install route.

Solve : Problems created by Flash update of AMD Fuel ??

Answer»

Hello,

My desktop is running Windows 7 SP1 Build 7601 64 bit.  It was made by a company named Ironside Computers in Reedsburg Wisconsin about 6 years ago. (They only make gaming computers these days).

The hard drive is 1 gigabyte.  It has 8 gigabytes of DDR3 ram.  The sound and video are internal.

My anti/malware is ESET Nod32 and Windows Firewall with Advanced Security.

I ran the Trend Micro online scan before posting and it showed no problems.  I have scanned with ESET and the EmisoftEmergencyKit and neither showed a problem.

Several weeks ago I updated the BIOS on the FM2A78 Pro 3+ mainboard from V 1.50 to V 1.70.  I do have the AMD installation disk.

Initially the problem was an "elongated' screen (for example a round icons would be more oval than circular)

It has gotten worse.  I am no longer able to type services.msc into the search box under start.  I receive the message "Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file.  You may not have the appropriate permissions you access the item.  I'm the admin and haven't changed my permissions.  I can get there by using Windows Key + R.

The browsing history does not populate.  An online fix suggested changing the amount allowed for storage.  I receive a message saying "Please select a value between 8 and 89 for how much disk space temporary internet files may use.

There are other problems

Online fixes for the above problems have not worked.

Sorry to be long winded. However, I wanted to give as much background as I could.  I hope it helps.

Thanks for listening

I would verify that you have the correct AMD driver for the GPU of the APU for your system. I am assuming your just running the APU since its a socket FM2. At the website linked below you can select "processors with graphics" and should find your APU listed there to download the proper driver for it.

https://www.amd.com/en/support

If you added a higher end video card to the system into the PCIE slot then you will WANT to get the driver for that card.

Once you have the correct drivers the problem should be FIXED.

Only other thing that I have seen cause ovals which should be circles is older games that were not designed for WIDE screen displays. However this is usually cured by sacrificing some of your screen area to have black dead area on left and right by setting the resolution to something that is square like 1024x768 or a higher resolution that conforms to a square aspect ratio vs wide screen ratio.Hi
Sorry to hear you are having a problem with your computer

If this started after you upgraded AMD fuel perhaps it would be an idea to use the version on the Asrock cd .
With CPU based graphics i would un install the Catalyst control center and disable AMD fuel. Just load the drivers for the FM2 CPU. DaveL.embke and Lisa-maree.

Thank you both for the help and ideas to solve the problem.

HOPEFULLY one or a combination of both will solve my problem.

Solve : Computer keeps shutting halfway off?

Answer»

So i'm having a problem with my computer SUDDENLY shutting halfway off. The monitor, keyboard, mouse and the case fan all STOP getting power, but the cpu fan and the power supply fan still keep working. I thought the fans got clogged up with DIRT so i cleaned them but it still keeps shutting off. I guess it's still overheating but i have always cleaned the fans when my computer started turning off and it always worked. Also when it has halfway shut down i can not do anything, the power button and restart button do nothing, the only SOLUTIONS i have is to unplug the power CABLE or press the button at the back of the case to turn off the power completely. Maybe it's not an overheating problem but idk, does anyone know what it might be?Check you temperatures using this tool.

You can check your fan speeds and also your computer's temperatures by downloading and running Speedfan

Solve : ASUS CG series?

Answer»

I have an ASUS computer with two hard drives: FIRST drive has Vista, which is working fine, and second drive has 7 with win explorer constantly restarting. I have gone through the process of trying to repair and also go back to a restore point; I have also tried disconnecting everything extraneous. It seems the OS is corrupted, but I have lost the discs that I used to install it, so can't use them to repair. I bought a repair USB thumb drive, but don't have the option of booting from USB on the boot menu, only "boot from removable device" which doesn't seem to work. I think that if I can get to the activation key information that's stored on the E drive through the C drive, I can download a repair. Any suggestions?Disconnect the Vista HDD and boot to the win 7 USB stik and do a repair install...after all is good you can re-connect the Vista drive.PS...to boot from USB you need to enter the BIOS and set USB as 1st boot device.I am sorry to say that I spent the majority of the day trying to use the repair stik to do a repair install to the 7 drive, but was not successful. Once the Vista drive was disconnected, the 7 drive was not ACCESSIBLE. The error message said "insert boot media and hit any button," but doing that only caused the error message to repeat. I finally figured out to hit F8 at startup, which got me to being able to choose the PATRIOT USB. Using the stik, I was given the same five options for RECOVERY that I found on the 7 drive itself (none of which made any difference).

Doing a little more research, I found a program which displayed the key for the OS I have on the 7 drive--do I now download an ISO file? I'm not sure what exactly that is, but I'm not ready to erase what's currently on the drive. I'd appreciate whatever guidance I can get at this time.

Thanks.

Solve : Windows 7 DVD problems?

Answer»

Hi there.

Can someone urgently help me out.I'm having trouble with my Windows 7, and to repair it I have to use my Windows 7 DVD.The problem is my DVD refuses to read 2 files in the 'boot' folder due to it being scrathed.I've been through a LOT in the past 4 days trying to get my windows running again.I now have Vista installed and I'm haveing a tought time searching the web, because my computer time is set to 2006 so I get a lot of CERTIFICATE errors.I can only use 2006 - 2007 dates or Vista will LOG me out with the error "Product key expired". I can't believe I have to go through all of this just to repair my Windows installation.

Please can you guys do me a huge favour and upload the files -

"boot.sdi" and "bcd"

inside the Windows 7 Installation DVD 'boot' directory. The files is just over 3MB in size for both.

I will be extremely grateful if you can help me out. It's only those 2 files that isn't able to read correctly and without them I'm not getting the 'boot from dvd' option when booting up my PC.I want to create a bootable USB drive now, but can't copy those 2 files.

Also I am not in a position to download a Windows 7 ISO, as data is extremely expensive in my country and  I don't have the money to do that.If I could download an ISO I wouldn't even have wasted time looking for help on forums.

Please anyone with a Windows 7 dvd can help me out.PLEASE guys.

Thanks

Solve : Multiple Bluescreens?

Answer»

Hello all!

My computer specs:
Asus M5A97 Motherboard
AMD FX-6300 Processor
GeForce GTX 760 Video Card
8 GB ram
Windows 7

I am getting two blue screens often (neither of which I can GET to appear in Blue Screen view for some reason). These began after installing a new SSD (crucial 500GB) and installing Windows to it.

The first:
KERNAL_DATA_INPAGE_ERROR(Stop error 00007a)

The second:
A process or thread crucial to system OPERATION has unexpectedly exited or been terminated. (Stop error 0000f4)

The first, I've seen before, usually points to faulty memory. I ran a hard drive test (the hard drive test software provided by the manufacturer, CRUCIAL) on my new SSD drive, thinking that was the problem, but it came back clean. So I ran MemTest+ on my RAM, and it came back clean. Then, suddenly the crashes stopped.

For three days.

Today, I jump on my computer, and it's crashing every few minutes - throwing either the "Process terminated" or Kernal data" error very rapidly. The computer crashes suddenly, regardless of what I am doing.

I ran checkdisc on all my hard drives (I have 3, 2 SSD 1 HDD). They all ran fully and came back clean. I ran SMART tests from the manufacturer of the drives, all clean. Ran MemTest+ again, clean.

Now I've been using it for about 5 hours no problem. Like the tests are fixing it temporarily (I know that isn't the case).

My next step is to pick up some new ram, switch it out, and see if that helps things. If not, I'm pulling the new SSD and going back to the old one to see if that fixes it. If pulling the new drive doesn't fix it, I'll WHIP out the other drives and see if I can find which one is failing (if one is failing). Does anyone here have any other suggestions?

Thank you for any assistance!

I ran checkdisc on all my hard drives (I have 3, 2 SSD 1 HDD).

The SSD might be faulty. I had one I had to send back because it was crashing my system. The issue was band aided by relocating the paging to a HDD. For some reason the SSD had a glitch in which it would inject bad info from the SSD to RAM and crash it out just like you have going on. The drive I had with this issue was a Crucial M500 240GB on my workstation that is running the Kabini Quadcore Sempron 1.3Ghz with 4GB RAM and Windows 7 64-bit. I got a replacement SSD in mail about 3 weeks later and this new one doesnt have the issue. I also tried firmware update for the SSD and that didnt fix it. You can try a firmware update for the drive if one is available. CrystalDiskInfo showed no problems in the S.M.A.R.T data.

I doubt your system RAM is the cause.Hello DaveLembke,

Thanks for the insight.

Yes, my drive is also a Crucial drive, so it sounds as though this may be the case.

Do you think it would be safe to do a system image from my current SSD to put on the new one, or should I just INSTALL Windows on the new drive (start from scratch?) Not sure if this is a problem that might "move" with the data...probably not, I hope?

Thanks! How long did you run MemTest ? ?Memtest86 should be run for 3 hours or so to make sure multiple passes is what patio is getting at. Reading back, I thought this system was upgraded from HDD to SSD where the SSD destabilized it. Maybe I am getting through thread confused with another that I assisted.

If you can image the SSD to a HDD and run off just the HDD that would be a good test to eliminate whether its the SSD or not. If its RAM it will happen no matter what drive is installed.

I was able to successfully use macrium REFLECT to image off the trouble drive I had to a HDD and ran on that HDD with no problems until the replacement drive arrived. I then imaged from HDD back to replacement SSD and no problems for me.Hello all!

So, I went and got a new SSD and pulled out the old one.

The issues went away.

I was able to return the SSD to Crucial (even though the warranty was up) as they stated there was some defect and sent me a new one.

So, Yay!

Thanks for the help.Kewl...thanx for reporting back with success !

Solve : Is an M.2 "PCIe 3.0 x4" interface always capable of 32gb\s or does it depend on?

Answer»

Do all M.2 interfaces that are rated "PCIe 3.0 x4" support the full transfer speed of 32gb\s (with an M.2 SSD that supports it) or does this need to be confirmed for each motherboard?

I can't seem to see any transfer speed details for the MSI B450 Tomahawk but it does state the following:

1 x M.2 slot (KEY M)

Supports PCIe 3.0 x4 (AMD® Ryzen 1st and 2nd Generation/ Ryzen™ with Radeon™ VEGA Graphics) or PCIe 3.0 x2 (AMD® Athlon™ with Radeon™ Vega Graphics) and SATA 6Gb/s 2242/ 2260 /2280/ 22110 STORAGE devices. Not all MBoards support it...so that means you have to do some research...Sorry 'bout yer MSI choice however. Solve : Vista and separate lanuguas for each user?

Answer»

Hi!

I need to install WINDOWS Vista and don't know if it supports for each user possible to display separate languages. So, is possible for example for user1 have language English and for user2 German language.
I know it was not yet supported maybe, but maybe it is supported.
So, is possible to use separate languages between users?

Thank you for your support.
MiroMicrosoft no longer supports Vista.
You may CONSIDER going to Windows 10.Found something of interest, if anybody else comes here and LOOKS at this post. Even though the Microsoft answer information linked below says it's applicable to windows 10, maybe the steps are similar in older versions of windows (if you really insist on running an older operating system not supported by Microsoft now or will not be supported in the near future)

Seems like the instructions were for setting up two accounts on same computer with one displaying in English while the other shows in Japanese.

Thanks for posting your query on Microsoft Community.

As PER your query, I like to inform you that; yes, you can set wife's user account in Japanese language.

You need to change the default language as Japanese in your wife’s account and English as default language in your own account.

Follow the below link:

1) Login to your wife’s account.

2) Type settings in the search area on the task bar and select Settings.

3) Select Time and language.

4) Select Region and Language from the left panel.

5) Click on Add language.

6) Add the Japanese language from the given list.

7) Click on the Japanese language and click on Set as Default button.

Repeat the same steps in your account also, just set English as default language.

I need to know if is it possible on Vista.
Why I selected Vista: I found old laptop an it is not possible to run there full Windows 7.
XP is not enough, so this is my choice for HARDWARE possibilities.
XP features also nothing like is in question.

Solve : windows 7 - blue screen - memory issue?

Answer»

Hello,

I was using Google Chrome and all of a sudden it stopped working and I received blue screen message saying "Beginning dump of physical MEMORY".

I tried restarting my computer and it seems working now but I don't know for how long...

Please advise if anything should be done to prevent any further issues.

Thank youMemtest86 should be run to determine if the RAM is healthy.

Crystaldiskinfo can be used to look at S.M.A.R.T data of the Hard Drive or SSD health to detect if that is the cause. *A drive can be the cause because of how virtual memory aka paging uses the drives available free space as TEMPORARY storage of information to help the system RAM handle more information than that of the memory capacity of the system. So if a drive is not healthy it can store binary data wrong and when read back by the system cause a crash like you had.

Other possible cause for this would be a bad driver or something else that has a flaw in its design or is corrupted which gets to its breaking point and then crashes system.

A hardware issue could also be happening with say a video card which shares memory with system memory and causes the memory crash.

Look in the Windows event logs to see if there are any errors to share with us that were recent to the crash condition. There are time stamps and sometimes windows senses something isnt quite right before the crash such as a failing hard drive can have a bunch of delayed.write errors in the event logs.

Lastly be sure chrome is the latest version and no updates needed. If out of data run the update to run on the latest version of it which may be patched for a prior flaw that your experiencing.

Thanks for the quick response DaveLembke.

I've checked Windows event logs between August 1,2019 - August 4,2019. Following are events that happened.

Please let me know if I should download and run Memtest86 and Crystaldiskinfo tools.Forget MemTest... it aint RAM...your HDD is headed South.
Run the manuf diagnostics to confirm...how do I run manuf diagnostics ?DLoad the free app from the HDD manuf. site...run the long testall I was able to find is this https://www.kingston.com/en/support/technical/ssdmanager and in that Kingston SSD Manager appears to be no testing option...

sorry but can you give me the link where I can download?sorry can you give me the link where I can download that software? Here is crystaldiskinfo if you want that to see what S.M.A.R.T reports.  I use the standard edition and get the zip of it, then run the 64-bit edition if your system is running 64-bit OS. You had one isolated blue screen error. It is, in my opinion, not clear that the hd was the cause and I would not worry about it. One thing you can do is go to System Properties - Advanced - Startup & Recover Options and UNcheck "automatically restart". Next time there is a blue screen error it should appear on screen. Copy the info and post it here. Until then, I wouldn't spend any more time on the issue.

Solve : Sound Not working properly?

Answer»

For the past month, I've been having sound problems.  Basically, as shown in the two attachments below, my system volume is  higher than WMP or Chrome -which usually peaks at 18% while at the same time my system volume is at 50%.  It's not my browser as many forums suggest because it happens with WMP and even games.
I've been searching for a solution for this problem since it started and I've yet to find a one that works (though most of them say the same thing: Go into your sound mixer and unmute Chrome or Go into your sound mixer and turn up the volume, neither of which, of course, help.  I've also been told to reinstall Chrome, even after I said the problem wasn't just with my browser.
My sound card is up-to-date, I have no viruses or malware to cause this, and my system settings for audio have never been changed.
While this may not be a major issue, it is something that is constantly irritating and I would appreciate any help I get.

[attachment deleted by ADMIN to conserve space]Yes, it is a problem. But did something change recently?
A Google search shows  many  complain about low volume level in Windows 7.
https://www.google.com/search?q=sound+level+problems+in+windows+7&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8
This one looks good:
https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-pictures/windows-7-low-volume-on-speakers/acabf5d9-3df3-4b68-b91d-e880c0c37602
Sad to say, but it does not LOOK like there is a quick fix.
There are a number of you tube videos.
 You already saw them?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NpyqMGodYRE
If you go to  that link you can see other related videos about windows sound.

Nothing's changed in my settings or OS, but it does seem to be a wide-spread problem.  I'm not sure if it's just on Win7, as my Win10 computer has started having the same problem.  I'm updating my drivers as I type this, but it's a slim hope that'll fix the problem.
And I've watched, at least, a dozen or more YouTube videos about the problem, and it's mostly just "update your drivers" or "turn your volume up" kinda things.
I hope it's not a faulty update, and something Microsoft will PAY attention to and fix, but, again, slim hope.
I appreciate the help, but it looks like I'm stuck just having low sound. Some other thoughts.
Laptop speakers are not able to provide as much sound level as one would like.
The makers to not have a strong policy or grantee as to sound fidelity and level.

There has been some talk of putting a limit on sound volume from devices that might be used by children. One might speculate that MS and others have put a limit on sound volume to meet such recommendations.
http://lifeandhealth.org/lifestyle/reducing-noise-pollution/1736.html

A solution is to get a portable Bluetooth speaker system that has its own amplifier.I have a Win7 desktop and laptop and a Win10 laptop, all of which are having this problem.  And I've had all three of the computers for nearly three years and it's only been the past month this has become an issue.
hello, i didn't understand if you installed latest drivers ?Do you computers use the  REALTEK HI Def ALC660 onboard audio?
A known issue with windows 7 update and the Realtek drives has been documented elsewhere. In that case the solution was to remove the drivers and then install original drivers.

EDIT: Here is a new link about this problem on Windows 10.
https://www.drivereasy.com/knowledge/how-to-update-realtek-audio-drivers/
I am not using Realtek audio, so I have not tried this.  I've updated the drivers on both my Win7 desktop and my Win10 laptop and it only seems to have made the problem worse.  Now, instead of just my music/video volume being low, my sound is now extremely muffled.  My volume is now at 100% across the board but I'm only getting about 20% of the level and 5% of the sound.  Honestly thinking this is more of a Realtek issue than a computer one as every forum I've found has stated that after updating the Realtek drivers, sound quality and volume have decreased.
I'm guessing there's either going to be a fix or people like me who have this problem will have to deal with maximizing the equalizer and adjusting volume through special means. Quote

You are right on it!
You have two practical ways to resolve this.
A. Gert a set of all the drives Realtek  has ever used for this device and experiment.
B. Use an alternative sound device. POSSIBLY a USB sound m,nodule.

There are multiple reasons to use a sound card. Let’s list a few good things to help with:
Connect up to 7.1 surround sound system
Connect to a Home Theater sound system
Replacement for a broken sound card
    Spruce up an old laptop
Recording device – Get multiple microphone ports to record your garage band
    Whatever else you can imagine
External sound cards overcome all the limitations of the built-in sound system. Professional audio men use these to convert a laptop into a recording studio.
The come in a wide range of prices.

Solve : runtime error 429 activex component can't create object?

Answer»

error "runtime error 429 activex component can't create object" i see this error when i TRY to login in one of my developed SOFTWARE but it has been recently installed on another pc (client) and i am unable to find a proper solution. even tried ocx file re-registering, office re-register. This is to continue to this error. The VBAccelerator Explorer Bar Control requires both SSubTmr6.dll as well as the VBA Image List Control components to be registered.

if you are using other controls then you should review their dependencies and make sure they are all part of what you are distributing to install the program elsewhere.I have registered both but couldn't find any more helpful to my software.

HERE I AM ATTACHING AN IMAGE TO SEE THAT WHEN I ADD USERNAME AND PASSWORD, THEN I PRESS OKAY, IT WILL GET DISAPPEAR AND NOTHING HAPPENS.

I HAVE A THINKING THAT IT IS NOT ABLE TO ACCESS DATABASE BUT I MIGHT BE WRONG.

Is this what you MEAN by expanding the power save window?
On the LEFT the top one is turn off hard disc.

I have't noticed any changes when active.

I installed Windows a few months ago and have not changed the color options since.

Solve : How do I proceed wanting Windows 7 on SSD and Program Files on HDD??

Answer»

I'm SETTING up a new computer that will have a 250 GB Samsung EVO 850 SSD and two 1 TB Seagate Barracuda hard drives. I want the SSD to be the boot drive and have the Windows folder with the operating system (Windows 7 Professional 64 bit). I ALSO want to have a few programs on the SSD: browsers, email, and VLC Player. I prefer to have a lot of software programs. (That's just me. I have my reasons; don't waste your time trying to talk me out of it.) I don't want to overcrowd the SSD. I want to KEEP the great majority of programs and of the application data folders on ONE of the Seagate drives. I guess you could say I basically want a big Program Files folder on a Seagate drive and a mini-Program Files folder on the SSD.

What's the proper way to proceed? Install the whole system drive package, with Program Files and user profiles/accounts as well as the actual OS (which I assume is synonymous with or subsumed in the Windows folder) on one of the HDDs, and then migrate just the Windows folder to the heretofore blank SSD and set the SSD as boot drive in the BIOS?

Or should I install Windows 7 to the SSD and then create parallel Program Files and application data folders on the Seagate hard drive? Or maybe move Program Files to the Seagate if possible, and just have my small NUMBER of programs on the SSD in their own folders there?I'm thinking you would need to install clean to the SSD and then copy the contents of program files to the hard drive and then create a symbolic link to the folder on the HDD to act as if its on the C: drive for program files for the path to remain the same.

Only problem I can think of that you can run into with this is if any files are in use in the program files folder, it might not allow copying stating file in use.

I used a symbolic link once to make my SSD act bigger capacity than it is, as it was a 90GB SSD in a laptop and I wanted to install World of Warcraft and so I added a 64GB Thumb drive to the system and created a symbolic link and this way i was able to install the game to C: drive even though the path was really onto my E: drive thumb drive. This was a few years ago when WoW would still fit within 64GB. I think its exceeded 64GB now, but a 128GB thumb drive would work. *Note the load time of the game was slower than SSD speed but it was able to play the game through a USB stick once loaded.

Personally I wouldn't bother relocating the default program files content after installing OS clean to SSD. But when installing software that you want onto the HDD vs SSD you should be able to give it an alternate path to install to so that its installed onto the HDD instead of the SSD.

Solve : Got a windows Vista operating laptop but password is not being accepted to open?

Answer»

Hello I was asked to repair a samsung laptop  NPR519 by my sister, its a windows Vista operating system, when I got it it was not lighting up so I opened it up cleaned the motherboard, the fan, the RAMS and installed everything back up again and the laptop started up, unfortunately the password she gave me every time I try to input it the laptop rejects it, so I need to bypass it have been on you tube but to no avail, I did a hard  shut down on it and turned it on so I got on the Windows error recovery and followed the procedure through so I could try and get to the Command prompt but it would not offer the options for that really desperate and could do with some help of how to bypass the password its my first little project. My initial thought was to go back to your sister and ask for the password again to be sure you got it right OR ask her to log in for you and see if she gets it to work.
Did she give you the right password or did you remember / note down what she said incorrectly? OH thank you for for responding I did ask her  and even asked her if they were any upper cases, she confirmed what she gave was correct  me its a real nightmare  any more suggestions ?Sorry, the rules of this forum are to not help anyone bypass the password feature no MATTER what reasons are given as we cannot determine which reasons are legit and which are for fraudulent reasons.Fair enough thank you for the help I understand what you mean.just another thought -- if you don't care about losing data or whatnot, you can always try the reformatting hdd / reinstalling the operating system process-- preferably by way of recovery media if the pc came with one.

if that works out then you'll be out of the password lockout ISSUE of course. This is NOT a quick solution. But here is what you can do.
Contact someone locally who will know your are the real owner or administrator. That person can help you recovery the password with method we do not post here.

A possibility is you local POLICE department. The likely have meet up with this KIND of thing before.  But if you want to contact the maker of the COMPUTER, you need some way to prove ownership. If the computer was registered, and recons kept, that would not be an issue.

In the future, keep records. And install TWO users on the computer and two passwords.  If a user is an administrator, he can change passwords.

Aldo, get a cloud service and use a different password. Sore on it a document o reveal the passwords you used. A set of questions that would provide a hint to the password.
Your middle name?
Four digits of your SS#
Tour favorite vegetable?
Or whatever might help you recall.

The cloud server can be read from another computer if you remember the password. In some cases even the cloud server might let your change the password via e-mail or a text message.

That is the best I can do without bending forum rules.

Good and Free cloud servers:
  Microsoft
  Amazon
  Google
  Salesforce
..and many others.

Solve : Computer Shutting Down?

Answer»

Periodically my computer shuts down.  Sometimes I can go a month or so, then all of a SUDDEN the machine just quits on me like it has just done. I would WELCOME any thoughts as to a likely cause.

Could the fact that I run my machine for lengthy periods have anything do with the issue. The machine as been running for four hours before it switched itself off this morning.

It's damned annoying when I'm busy working on an image in Photoshop.

I've checked power cables, both at the wall and the power supply socket.

May thanks.

You can check your fan speeds and also your computer's temperatures by downloading and running SpeedfanSounds to me like an OLD TIRED PSU...swap a known good one in there for a week if you can borrow one.

But as Dave SUGGESTED above also check yer temps...Thanks both of you, just one question about Speed Fan, is there anyway of starting this on start-up?There's no real advantage to having it run at start-up. You need to wait until the heat builds up but you should be able to set it to run at start-up.Thanks for to those who replied.

Solve : NVIDIA Driver Crashes, Multiple BDOD's?

Answer»

So, for the past week or two ive been experiencing a rather annoying ISSUE. This started about a week after I was forced into a Windows Update on either a shutdown or a restart (Hadnt updated for... six months or so? Not smart, I know.) Got a message about some "Important" update.

So, ive been getting four bluescreens so far with the 0x00000050 error, no other error.

My NVIDIA driver has been crashing consistently every day or two. A restart fixes it, but it will just crash again eventually. Then, hours later Ill get a bluescreen with the 0x00000050 error code.

But, now its worse. Now, ive not only gotten two bluescreens in one day, but when I wasn't even using the NVIDIA card for anything...

I tried forcing my APPLICATIONS to use the integrated, but it still crashed, except without warning of a driver crash.

It usually happens when im playing Minecraft or right after I exit an intensive game like Craftiverse, but it also happens when im just watching Youtube, or doing something like re-organizing files into different folders. So far, about seven or eight NVIDIA driver crashes, and four bluescreens.

This issue is really starting to mess with how im using my computer, and id appreciate it if you guys could help me solve it.

Ive tried running Dell Diagnostics but that all came back clean. Ive also tried doing running CMD as admin and doing "sfc/SCANNOW", in case that HELPS. It came back clean, finding no integrity violations.

Ive also noticed my hard drive has slowly been eating space up, despite me clearing out stuff I dont use.
Ive attached the BlueScreenViewer logs below in case anyone wants to look at them.

The laptop model is a Dell Latitude E6530

My specs are:

i7-3540M 3.00 Ghz (Has an Intel HD 4000)
8 GB DDR3 RAM
300 GB 5400 RPM HDD, 71.7 GB Free
NVIDIA NVS 5200M 1 GB
Windows 7 Professional SP1

Update: Got another BSOD, attaching the BlueScreenViewer log.Hi

There was a windows update from years ago which caused problems with the Dell Latitude E6530 nvidia graphics the update was this nVidia - Graphics Adapter WDDM1.1, Graphics Adapter WDDM1.2, Other hardware - NVIDIA NVS 5200M.

You could first try going to Add Remove programs and then select show updates and then remove the above update, if it doesn't fix it  then it is easy to re install from windows update server.
Thanks for the advice, I might try that.

Dosent explain the WIFI card disabling and re-enabling itself at times though. Happens a few times in a day.
Or why I get reconnected to a wifi with lower range and less speed, when im on one close range and fast speeds.

Agh, sorry, I forgot to put this in the inital post. It slipped my mind then. Also sorry if I came off rude, I dont mean to be.Sorry if this is considered bumping/spam, im just updating BlueScreenViewer logs. I have no intention of SPAMMING posts or bumping the topic.

Also, the crashes are different files crashing depending if I force stuff on integrated, or use the NVIDIA for some stuff.

Really sorry about this post, just cant fit five logs when the limit is four attachments. This crash is different from the others, just happened, it was when I tried to use the NVIDIA about a minute in. Was using Minecraft Launcher, I can provide pictures of some of the bluescreens if needed.

Right now I am forcing applications on the NVIDIA to see if its the cause.

Solve : Toshiba satelite cannot boot to win 7?

Answer»

toshiba satelite laptop cannot boot to windows 7. I do not have a windows install disk
I can get to system restore options - but startup repair -system restore- don't get me to fix WIN start up. I can use command prompt - have used sfc - but still cannot boot to windows. I want to SAVE files and data before reinstalling windows from a toshiba recovery disk. (It says it will restore to oem.) Suggestions?Hi

You can use the xcopy command from the command prompt to copy either the folders in your users\profile name or the whole user profile.

So the command would be xcopy c:\users\*.* /s /e  e:                  or what ever is your usb  drive or flash drive LETTER you are copying to.

Also check the drive with the Dir c: command to check if there is any other folders you might need to copy which are not in the users folder. You then would use xcopy c:\music\*.* /s /e e: for example.
In case OP comes back to see this THREAD again ---

1. Can try to download a windows 7 installation disk image from here --> https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows7

2. Can try to remove the hdd/ssd from the laptop and connect to another WORKING pc and dump all the files wanted to that other pc

Solve : laptop speed correction?

Answer»

My LAPTOP is slow. How to improve speed
midhat luqman
What are you trying to run on it that is slow?

What is make/model of laptop?

A SSD can be installed to a laptop as long as the laptop is new enough to have a SATA port and that can make a laptop act like new in regards to loading applications and booting. It also helps for a laptop that is low on RAM because the swap SPACE is happening on much faster than hard drive SSD which can reduce lag.

However if your trying to play a game for example that has system requirements that are beyond that of the laptop then there isn't much HOPE for making it faster. Some people can UPGRADE APU or CPU's but if able to do that the faster APU or CPU if socketed to be able to swap for better run hotter to which the laptop can overheat because its now creating more heat than it was engineered to deal with removing.

Solve : opening siriusxm?

Answer»

I downloaded siriiusxm on windows 7 and when I attempt to open listen on line I get this PAGE can't be displayed.  I also get the same MESSAGE when attempting to open search SITES.  Is there something that I NEED to correct on settings or another portion on the computer.

Thank you
BryanYou are refereeing  to:
wwvv.siriusxm.com:     < I broke link on purpose. >
The web site has support.
If you go to the site with a clean PC, you can chat with a technician.

I do NOT see a version for  Windows 7
My guess is that you did the wrong download. You need the one for your OS.

You may need to recover your system from a backup or system restore.

Thank youWait. There is a siriusxma scam. I think yu got it!

Search for siriusxma scam in a browser that is not infected.

There are posts elsewhere that claim they are not honest. The on-line siriusxm URL is "https://player.siriusxm.com".  Providing you have a subsciption and can login, this should allow you to stream music.  This should work on WIN 7 in any browser.

There is also a siriusxm app in the Windows store but Win 7 doesn't support store apps.
