Solve : How to change color of fonts on desktop icons in Windows 7 ??

Answer»

My current desktop background is a photo of my grey cat with a lot of grey in the background. My desktop icon fonts are white which makes them hard to see. How do I make these fonts black?

[attachment deleted by admin to conserve space]Right-click on the desktop and select Personalize. You should be able to change it there.Won't work. The icon color box is not active (shown circled in red in the attached image). It was active with Windows XP. I don't remember if it was or not with Vista. I currently have it set for size 11, and for bold, which helps, but a dark color font would be better. Also, it makes no difference if I have the 'Item' field 'desktop' set to black or set to white, or any other color.

[attachment deleted by admin to conserve space]It's because you have Win basic theme...select CUSTOM theme and GO from there...I've tried Windows Aero, High contrast and I've downloaded and am currently using Abstract Bright. All of these don't allow selection for 'Icon' color. How do I select "custom" theme? It's not Icon color you want to change...you wanna change font color...or select a background color for Fonts...You can't change the color of the Icon Labels on the Desktop. At least not with Windows Theme UI in Windows 7. It will always be White with a dark Drop Shadow if Drop shadows are on.

If Drop Shadows are off, though, Windows will select White or Black based on whether your chosen Desktop Color is darker or lighter. So if you uncheck "Use drop shadows for icon labels on the desktop" in Control Panel->System->Advanced System Settings->Advanced Tab, Settings button in the Performance group box, you can then change the "Desktop" color to White to get Black desktop Icon text.

Alternatively, you can use Third Party software like Iconoid which provides desktop icon customization features, including color.Yes sir that did the trick (unchecking 'Use drop shadows for icon labels on the desktop', and SETTING the 'desktop' color to white). Being that my new cat (photo of which is my desktop background) chose my lap as her favorite spot, I'm unable to use my LAPTOP PC. Instead I'm using my desktop PC/bluetooth mouse and keyboard with 32" monitor 12 feet away, which is a chore to see with my old eyes. Now I can see it much better. Thanks once again BC!

Solve : system restore point - automatic ancient entries recovery upon startup?

Answer»

hi guys,

I have issues of old System recovery files reappearing upon STARTUP (https://www.screencast.com/t/0aWBqHOi0Jq), even though I removed them all with this guide: http://www.thewindowsclub.com/how-to-delete-all-system-restore-points-and-previous-versions-of-files-in-windows-7

Even with disabling System protection it didnt work, because although the PC was churning and it seemed like it was doing it's JOB at first, upon each restart the same old entries from 2012-13 reappear. The strange thing is that before I do a restart the new manual restore points I create are actually created fresh, but upon restart Windows seems to recover the ancient entries again and neglects the new entries that I recently created. When I enter a safe-boot mode the LIST is clear which is what it should be, but of course i cant create any new restore points in safe mode!

Is the recovery Folder C;\Windows\System\Recovery where the recovery Points are stored? Can I edit the ReAgent.xml file or dig deeper into the registry (upon my own RESPONSIBILITY of course) if you provide me the path in regedit?

Cheers, raefe77
raefe77,
No, this is no any kind of answer. Rather, some questions.

Do yu want or need any restore points?
Would you like to really destroy forever all the recovery data?
Do you have the Windows system INSTALL DVD?
And d do  you have copies of all software you use?
Do you have another PC to use as a test bed?

I the answer is yes, you can install everything on the spare PC.
the answers are yes, but that doesnt resolve my issue. I want to repair THIS system recovery backup to be able to repair THIS Computer, not another pc.

Is anyone else able to provide some help digging into the Registry, please..? Either manually or by some kind of freeware tool?

Solve : need help with browser issues on Windows 7 Google Chrome?

Answer»

There are issues lately with my browser which I think are STEMMING from flash player but I don't know why.

I have Dell Inspiron i17RN-3530DBK laptop computer with Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit with Chrome version 57.0.2987.98 and the Flash player on the browser is version Version: 25.0.0.127. With that there is the following extensions enabled:  uBlock Origin 1.11.4, Adblock for Youtube 4.2.0 and WOT: Web of TRUST 3.2.22

I think the browser updates itself and maybe the flash player too? I ASSUME these are the latest version of each. On some websites I can't press buttons and have to use another browser with that particular page to get functionality. Last night, I had pages that I select to open in a new window POPPING up under the current browser window instead of over it. That went on for like two hours before it stopped doing that by itself.

The main issue is when I go to play an app game that I like  on Facebook. The game has all sorts of issues lately. I thought it was just the game but when I describe the problems to other players, it seems they are not having them so it must be only my computer.

The first thing that I noticed is that the game's window will suddenly jump downward on my screen by itself randomly. If I move the scroll bar on the browser to put the window back into the center of my screen, it will randomly jump down again. If I try to play the game in full screen mode then the whole picture will jitter and jump every few seconds. I can't play because this is nauseating.

I don't have any issue with graphics if I just watch a film or show on Windows media player or watch a YouTube video. For some reason, the issue just affects the game.

For the past week or so, the game is getting some big GREY square appearing at the bottom of the game app window and it has a broken face icon and says  "Please update your flash player by clicking HERE" yet the flash player was updated?

I tried just restarting my browser and when I opened it again, I was prompted to give permission to Facebook for the app game as if it was not already installed. There is a lock icon that is supposed to be to the left of the game's URL but on my computer it then goes to a "i" in a circle.

(I tried to attached a PDF file of GPU info but it said file size was too big)

I hope this info I provided can help me sort out this issue. Thank you

edit: I did disable the browser extensions to see if any were causing the issues but it doesn't seem that they are

 1. Have you updated all drivers from the Dell site for your model?

 2. have you installed drivers from any other source but Dell?

 3. Have you tested with Firefox browser?  it may need flash add on.

 4. Have you downloaded Flash to windows?

Solve : Reinstall Windows 7?

Answer»

I want to do a clean install of Windows 7 Home premium 64 bit service pack 1.

Where is recommended place to buy that I can download on USB.  I have OEM product key. Have no back up disks and no hidden recovery disk on computer. Restore to previous version only lets me do to this afternoon.

I have tried the Microsoft site but won't allow as I have OEM installed and laptop is 2nd hand and old just added extra memory. Not worried about easing my files etc.
Thanks AlwaysTrying.
You have the COA sticker on your PC. Right? Like the one below.
You can ASK the maker of your computer for a copy of the install disk.
Microsoft has a support forum and an 800 number. But your first task  is to contact the maker of the computer. Who is the maker?

[attachment deleted by admin to conserve space]Thanks for replying Geek,

Yes has sticker underneath computer.

It is a (old) compaq presario CQ56. (HP) I have been on website and googled everything but nothing as I don't have boot disks.

Could I buy windowsv7 from say Amazon full version and use that to install on laptop and put in old product key. Then use it to update an old custom built desktop running on XP using new product key?

I just wasn't sure if buying from Amazon or likes I wasn't going to end up with some doggy software.

This is from SPEECH dictation.
First of all let me say no. Do not buy a Windows 7 version off of Amazon. The retail version of Windows 7 is no longer a retail product, except in the case of overstocks or recovered merchandise. More likely, what you might by would end up being some special form of Windows 7 that was sold to some of the OEM companies in some other area.
Let me try to justify myself. I've been playing around with Windows XP, Windows 7 and Windows 10 for a while. At the present time Microsoft will only help you with Windows 10 INSTALLATION. If you want help with Windows 7 don't expect it to be free from Microsoft.
Now having said that, let me bounce some ideas off you. One idea is to buy one older Compaq Presario laptop that has Windows 7 already on it. In that case I believe you could copy the Windows 7 off of that computer and install it onto your compact for sorry okay and it should run. But if it has a problem about activation, you should be able to use the OEM product key that you have on the existing computer. That way you will end up with too old computers that run Windows 7 for less than what you would pay for at the price of a retail version of Windows 7. The retail version of Windows 7, if you can find it, should be about $100 and up. If you find it for less it would be a very unusual situation. But a fully functional Compaq  laptop with Windows 7 installed can be had for quite a bit less than $100. On eBay these old computers with Windows 7 installed are going for about $70 or less.
Here's the issue. The OEM product key works with the OEM version of Windows 7. The retail version of Windows 7 must have a retail product key. GIVEN that the operating system is still Windows 7, it does make a difference which product key you use. The retail version of Windows 7 will not allow you to use the OEM product key.
If I am wrong on this, please somebody but in right now and stop me.

How about Windows 10? Let me be very Frank and ask you a very personal question. Do you think you could put up with having Windows 10 on a very old computer? You might be able to get a copy of Windows 10 for use on your computer at a reasonable cost. In some cases the Windows 10 product key is being sold at a reasonable price. I do not understand the legal issues involved in this, some here have told me it has to be illegal. Nevertheless, some sources continue to advertise on the Internet that they will sell you just the product key by itself at a favorable price. I bought a Windows 10 product key off of eBay and was then told by other members of this forum that I have something illegal. So I'm not using it. But then again, I don't have to. I have to legal copies of Windows 10 anyway and don't need another one.
I've installed Windows 7 and number of times and have installed Windows 10 the number of times. From my experience if you have any kind of Windows 7 install disk, it will install without the product key. But you'll have to get a valid product key for it to activate correctly.
I suppose should have another computer available or you know a friend that has a computer. It is possible to download the ISO of the Windows 7 disk image. However, there is no official website that offers this service for free. And as somebody does offered for price, it might be illegal.
If you want to pursue the idea of downloading an ISO of Windows 7, you might send a personal message to me or one of the other members of this forum in maybe they will provide you a link to someplace where you can get a Windows 7 ISO. I believe that one time you could get it off the Microsoft site, but the last time I checked it was not available. Instead, they would rather you get Windows 10. If you're interested in Windows 10, there's no problem in getting a ISO from Microsoft and installing it on your computer. But there is the issue about getting the proper drivers. The have to have some way to get into the Internet and get the proper drivers for that particular computer. If you have a friend helping you, you might be able to get the Windows 7 drivers for that version of compact for sorry okay off of the Hewlett-Packard website. You'll have to specify the exact model number to get the right set of drivers.
Again, my best recommendation is to buy another compact personal Arial very much like the one you have that already has Windows 7 installed on it. You should be able to make a clone of the Windows 7 installation and copy it onto your compact Presario. The OEM product key you have on your laptop gives you the authority to do this.
The last few direct question about trying to install a retail Windows 7 on a machine that has only an OEM product key. To the best of my knowledge the answer is no. The retail version of Windows 7 has to go with a retail version of the product key. What you want is a Windows 7 version that comes with the Compaq personal Arial.
I hope that gives you some idea and please understand I'm doing my best to try to figure out a way to help you with your problem. Again, I believe that the price of a Windows 7 install disk probably will cost US much as buying an old Compaq personal Arial off of eBay that already has Windows 7 installed on it.
This is the end of dictation.    If he has a legible COA all he needs is the install media...borrowed or whatever...

As long as the versions match...Thank you Patio. I was wrong.

If the Windows 7 computer has a COA on it, then the product key will work on the DVD that is sold retail.
The only limit is the version.
  Home Premium
  Professional
  Ultimate

(There are both 32 and 64 versions .)

Thank you Geek an Patio, I really do appreciate your time in replying.

Laptop is currently in local computer REPAIR shop, as I popped in to ask before see your replies.  He going to reinstall for me and upgrade it to Windows 10 and kindly offered to do it for free. I pick it up tmrw and if all goes well I will take customised desktop in to be sorted and upgraded.

He also recommend Windows 10, I'm a bit meh at Windows 10 as I upgraded for free when they rolled it out on another Laptop which used to be my eldest. I do prefer Windows 7 (too old to keep up with technology) hopefully he will be able to reinstall my msoffice software that was also preinstalled on the compaq.

Will make sure do USB backup/boot.

Thanks again

Solve : Notepad F5 gives time then date, need to reverse order, to date then time?

Answer»

how do it reverse the ORDER?I believe the answer is available at https://www.experts-exchange.com/questions/20430625/Windows-Notepad-exe-change-F5-date-format.html
Notepad gets the time and date format from your REGIONAL settings. You would NEED to change them.

Thanks. that link READS "to make changes to it's appearance change the short date appearance in the regional settings in the control panel.it only changes the format," It does not reverse the time and date. Thank you. Goodbye.

Solve : Bsod & display driver crashing and rebooting?

Answer»

Motherboard: msi 970 gaming
powersupply: evga nex750b
cpu: amd fx8320
gpu: 270x r9 msi version
cooler: corsair hydro 55 quiet edition water cooler
1TB sata drive + 3tb drive
four 4gb ram sticks

I changed the case, board, ADDED 2 ram sticks and the 3tb drive so above is the new current setup. I reformatted the drive windows was on and then reinstalled. I used the cd that came with with the board to install DRIVERS originally but people recommend installed the updated drivers on the site so I just reinstalled overtop of the cd drivers. the gpu driver I had to do separately I've tried installing at least 3 DIFFERENT drivers in the past few days none seem to stop my computer from bluescreening or having this display driver crash randomly. I'm not sure what to do about this all the drivers were supposedly compatible I used amd's autodetect, tried downgrading with older drivers, and currently Im using drivers I found on the msi site for my card model.

I believe this is the blue screen I GOT recovered from bluescreenview https://puu.sh/vgqty/c5168711db.pngI'd run MEMTEST86 and verify that the 2 RAM sticks you added play well with the other 2. Run this for at least 3 full tests it could take a few hours. Any errors in RED for memory addresses will point out that you probably have a RAM stick that doesnt play well with others. You then will have to test them in pairs of RAM to try to locate which stick is the culprit. Sometimes even though RAM is brand new it doesnt play well with other sticks, especially if mixed brand, type, or timings.Wrong vid drivers...go to the card manuf. site...or use the drivers it shipped with...

New drivers aren't always better drivers...

Solve : api-ms-win-crt-runtime-l1-1-0.dll is missing error and SO MUCH MORE!?

Answer»

Hello and thank you in advance to anyone who offers me advice or assistance. I am in a doozy of a situation!

OS: Windows 7 Ultimate: SP1
CPU: Intel i5 2500
MoBo: ASRock Z77 Extreme 4
Ram: 8GB DDR3
GPU: AMD Radeon R9 200

This entire problem started when I installed a media program and upon starting it up, I received the error "This program can't start because api-ms-win-crt-runtime-l1-1-0.dll" iss missing from your computer." I looked online and the solution was to install Microsoft Visual C++ 2015, so I download and install it from the Microsoft website and the installation gets to 99% and then shows an error! In "Programs and Features" in the Control Panel it shows it as installed, but I still get the same missing dll error when I RUN the media program.

I do a google search and find out that I have to update Windows for Microsoft Visual C++ to work, so I go to Windows Update and click "Check for Updates" and the updater starts for about a second and then stops with unknown error #80073712! Another google search shows that there is some kind of problem with old Windows 7 updater and they RELEASED an update (ironic) to fix it! This update is called KB3138612, so I manually downloaded it from Microsoft and installed it, but the installer immediately crashed and said "This update is not applicable to your system"! So then I downloaded the windows update diagnostic tool which found that there was an unknown error #8007372 and couldn't fix it!

At this point, I'm thinking my system files must be corrupt, so I do yet another Google search and find that a sfc scan checks system files, but when I open command prompt and run the sfc it SAYS "Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation." I restart in safe mode and try it again: same error. My brother installed this OS years ago and I don't have the install cd, so I downloaded a windows 7 repair disk from "somewhere," booted it, and opened command prompt in boot. I ran "sfc /scannow /offbootdir /offwindir" and I got the EXACT same error!

NOW, I think it must be a virus (even though I use Comodo firewall) so I downloaded Avast and ran a scan, but it shows nothing! At this point, I am at a loss what to do. I know that a fresh install WOULD fix it, but as I mentioned, I no longer have the install disk/serial KEY (it was my brother's disk in the first place). Furthermore, I have a lot of programs that it would be very difficult to reinstall/restore. Is there any way I can fix all of this with my current OS installation?

Side Note: I currently have three hard drives in my PC. One is is for my OS and programs, and the other two are file storage. The second hard drive is currently in the process of failing and I am (very slowly) backing it up on the third drive. Once it is all backed up, I will only have the two hard drives. Since the failing drive is not where my OS is installed, I don't think it's part of the problem, but just in case, I mentioned it here. Please help!

Solve : unreadable product key on new dvd?

Answer»

My dad is unable to use his desktop anymore because of health issues. I have it now. It has W7 pro on it. I keep getting a warning saying it is an illegal copy. I bought a W7 disc from a store in HOUSTON. The product KEY is unreadable. I took it back to the store. They told me to call MS. MS told me to take it back to the store. The store hasn't been ABLE to help me. They told me it would be a week before they could get me a product key. It has been two weeks. Am I going to have to buy another disc to make operating system legal?
Unfortunately...Yes.

I'd mention to the store Owner that you will be informing MS that he sold you a bad copy of Windows...that should get his attention...I finally got them to exchange it for one I could read the product key.Good NEWS...thanx for stoppin back to LET us know...Good news and pretty bad that they gave such a hard time on this.

Did they say why it would take a week or longer to get you a new product key?

Solve : Windows 7 Infinite Loop?

Answer»

Hello there internet peeps,

Ok, so, possibly a simple problem. Windows 7 wont boot. Its stuck in one of those interminable loops which i just can't resolve. When I try to log on i get a windows error recovery message saying that I have damaged or incorrectly configured windows files and get offered a chance to launch start-up recovery (which leads to loading bars, a black screen and ultimately an unresolved problem) which recovers nothing and refers me to the manufacturer's start-up recovery which also does exactly nothing. The second option is to start windows normally. This option just leads to windows almost getting to the log-on screen but then restarting and TAKING you back to the error message I mentioned earlier.

The background to this is that about a year ago the charger to the laptop broke. No problems like this before then. Took me about a year to replace it. When I did, it worked fine for about a minute then I get this blue message (attached) which I don't get anymore. I've installed Ubuntu on a thumb drive and tried to access it that way but i get a similar message (attached) that I dont really understand.

The goal is to gain access to the hard drive to recover some files and then format so I never have to look at windows again. If i can do this by by passing windows entirely all the BETTER. If anyone could tell me the quickest way to do this or a description of the problem in a way that I can understand I would be most grateful. Puppies and kittens (in the form of a digital double thumbs up) for workable solutions.

Thanks!!

[attachment deleted by admin to conserve space]Best /quickest way to retrieve all the data from the HDD would be to get and external HDD enclosure...I'd start by replacing the hard drive with a healthy drive to rule out a damaged drive. Its complaining about I/O to the drive in both error messages both Linux and Windows. Good USED drives are pretty cheap.

*You should be ABLE to use a LIVE Linux distro to be able to use the computer otherwise until hard drive is swapped such as Knoppix, or ( Mint or Ubuntu's Preinstallation Live Environment ). Just not be able to save any files to the hard drive that appears to be ill.If you follow the instructions below you may be able to boot the computer from the ISO disk and possibly retrieve all your important info.data.

Download the OTLPE Standard REATOGO Windows Recovery Environment.

  • Place a blank CD-R disc in to your CD burning drive.
  • Download OTLPEStd.exe and double-click on it to burn to a CD using an ISO Burner. One can be found here.
  • Reboot your SYSTEM using the boot CD you just created.
  • Note : If you do not know how to set your computer to boot from CD follow the steps here
  • Your system should now display a REATOGO-X-PE desktop.

Re-install all the drivers from the laptop manuf. site...chipset drivers 1st...then re-boot.

I meant to say that its a DESKTOP that I'm referring to. Sorry for the lapse on my part...
The bsod report you posted shows just one BSOD. If that's the case, ignore it. If you've gotten THE SAME bsod multiple times, have you recently changed or updated any drivers? Is there any external equipment connected to the system?I've recently needed to install a Driver to allow for WiFi connectivity...and thus I've also inserted the WiFi adaptor. Dunno if that's causing the issues. The PC has had a bsod issue twice, and today it wouldn't boot up properly...and then requested that I do a system restore. Laptop or desktop ? ?
The error is connected to a Realtek WLAN adapter driver issue...

Any tips on how to address the issue ? I installed the driver directly from the CD which came with the device...I'd start by checking Device Manager for any yellow !!'s...
Those indicate missing/corrupt drivers.
Replace any from the MBoard manuf. site...
Re-boot after...

Solve : Win7 does not load after Password?

Answer»

Hi everyone
Have an HP Pavilion Laptop running Win 7.
Today, did not go to sleep mode when screen closed, instead changed to black screen with only cursor icon visible; turned OFF by holding ON button.
During start, screen took awhile to get to PASSWORD but finally did; once entered, Welcome message kept spinning x 20 min and then black screen appeared.  Tried again, with same result.
Was able to open in safe mode with NETWORKING; looked at HP website and decided to do a system restore from safe mode.  Showed me that a critical update had been installed on May 3; followed prompts and SEEMED successful.
Re-started on own and again, once password entered, welcome message appears and disc spins; been 15 minutes and now black screen again.

Issue with this laptop has been a faulty fan that would run heavily and device has always been QUITE hot ever since purchase at Costco.
Any ideas?
Thanks in advance.

Update.
Followed Allan's advice on a 2011 thread issue that sounded exactly like mine.  Followed the msconfig approach and re-enabled 4 services at a time; isolated the problem as the RapprtManagmentService from IBM, or 2 services from Apple.  Must be the IBM one as it's been more than 4 years since I did ANYTHING with Apple
When I now click on to services the IBM service is disabled and all seems well.
Thanks for archiving everything.
Cool...glad your back up and runnin and thanx for reporting back...

Lemme guess the Apple servoces were Bonjour"   ? ?Hi patio
Seems like problem is still there.
Left those 3 disabled; desktop appears/windows loads after password ID/can browse internet for 5-10 minutes then stops responding; have to force shutdown and restart.
All is fine on safe mode.

Solve : Taking 'ownership' questions.?

Answer»

The premium ver. of MBAM has a real-time scanner that runs in the BACKGROUND,,,
I suspect this is what is causing the hiccups.
Both good apps...because they do different THINGS.
I'd suggest disabling MBAM to run your Trend scans...and vice-versa and all should be good.
That is if you finally got Trend to install proper.

Either WAY the Trend tech shoulda known this IMHO.Thanks everyone for all your help. I've finally(after 5 weeks) got things working normally.

Yeah, it seems that Trend and Mal-Ware Bytes don't play nice together.

I'm KEEPING Mal-Ware Bytes running as my main anti-virus program, disabling it and running Trend once a week. Then I probably won't be renewing Trend this year.

I just hope that all the stuff I did during the past 5 weeks didn't screw things up...all the programs that I use DAILY are working fine...after about a month or so, I'll have used 90% of programs. If everything is still working, I should be good. Again, thanks everyone for your help!!! Doing your due diligence with your protection apps won't or shouldn't screw up any of your apps so you should be good to go...
Good to hear you are fixed up and thanx for keeping us posted.BTW...Welcome Aboard !.

Solve : Win 7 Desktop Icon rearrange on reboot my desktop icon?

Answer»

About 3 days AGO my desktop icons would no LONGER remain in place after rebooting.
I have been searching for solutions, I have unchecked auto arrange, i have unchecked let personalized desktop arrange your icons. I noted that this sometimes happens when there has been a crash ( I have had such an EVENT). There is also suggestions to delete something in the registry. EVERYTHING I tried had no effect. (Didn't try the registry deletion though). I am sure there is some simple fix but it eludes me. I've even thought of third party programs for a solution but I'd rather not at this point.

ThanksNot sure why it's happening, but I can tell you how to work around it. Download and install the latest release of iconoid (http://www.sillysot.com/download.htm). On the "positions" tab, click on "save positions" (after you have the icons set up the way you want them) and "automatically restore icon positions.....". In options, have it load with Windows. On the "hiding" tab, put a tick in "never hide".Thanks, appreciate the help. I'll keep the link handy but see if anyone can help me figure out a solution that doesn't require a 3rd party

Memory I took a HD out of an old Dell  GX280 that I had laying around. And of course I'm having problems with it. Keeps trying to restore system and keeps repeating. I'm running diagnostics on it now. It passed the 1st half with no errors.  After hooking up the HD in the Dell optiplex 755 is their something else I'm supposed to do before booting up?If it has Windows installed you can't simply move it from 1 PC to ANOTHER and expect it to work...
I'd get a new HDD and do a clean install after backing up your data...Ah ha I see. Ok so I have to get a new HD. Got ya. I thought you could just transfer one hard drive to another computer and it just works. I'm such a noob. Thanks for all your help. I'll put this hard drive from the Dell GX280 back in the GX280.I don't know if this means anything. I ran the Data Lifeguard Diagnostics program on the Hard drive. I ran both the quick test and extended test and they both passed.  Making me very confused ;-(Was this on the GX280 HDD you wanted to place in the system? If so that is expected.Yes I couldn't get the Dell Optiplex 755 "the one with the bad HD" to accept the HD from the Dell Optiplex Gx280. i didn't know you couldn't just swap Hard Drives. Now I know you can't. "I'm a computer noob" lol

So at this point should I give up on the bad HD?

or should I buy a new copy of Windows 7 and install it onto this drive and see what happens?

People keep telling me try a fresh install? what does that mean exactly?

i'm new at this. I'll do what you guys SAY is best at this point. I have nothing valuable on this bad HD anymore. I took everything off already.I don't have the Windows disk that came with this computer with Windows 7 Home premium on it ;-(If the PC still has the sticker with ID all you need to do is find a disc that matches whats installed...don't buy it just yet...
For some reason the sticker on it is for Windows Vista. I bought it off someone a few years back. I guess he upgraded it from Windows Vista Home to Windows Home premium.  Is it even possible to get a hold of a Windows Vista Home edition these days? *censored* i'd put Windows XP on this computer just to get it running again.

Your thoughts PLEASE  Try a University booksore or Library...

Solve : Can't restore English after Japanese-character attempt | Illegible "boxes" only?

Answer»

I do not know how to accurately but simply describe my problem other than in the subject line.

Running Windows 7 on a Lenovo X220 laptop.

Attempted to install Japanese language screen/keyboard in "locale" portion of Control Panel.

Stopped midway when only "block characters" (unreadable "Unicode"?) appeared on Windows SCREENS. Everything is fine (and in English) once into an app, but I can't access the exact part of Windows Control Panel to try and unwind this failed installation.

I have viewed perhaps 30+ posts or videos that purport to help, but all rely on being able to understand the Control Panel prompts!

I do not want to do an ENTIRE Windows re-install.

Help!

Here is one:

Notice third COLUMN, third up from bottom is the language area. Maybe you can try that. The icons will help you identify an item.

Thanks, "Geek" for the time and thinking in posting that image.

I did find the icon but the "English" option is way down the list of possible languages (it looks like 20-30 down the list) on ANOTHER well-behaving computer, but the black blocks remain.

Even if I had the patience (and record-keeping) to select and click "Apply" thirty times, with reboots, I am not optimistic.

I suspect the solution may be to "push" a value to the registry . . . or find an "ini" file to tweak?

Thanks!

This approach looks promising but likely over my head to execute:

https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-ie/goglobal/bb964650(en-us).aspx

(command line control of Region/Language settings)

If that does not work, consider SYSTEM restore.

Open the command prompt. Reboot your computer and load the Advanced Startup menu. You can access this by pressing the F8 key as your computer boots up. Select “Safe Mode with Command Prompt” from the list of options. You will be taken to a DOS-style command prompt.
For more details on starting in Safe Mode, see this article.
This method is for Windows 7, Vista, and XP. Windows 8 users should refer to the next section.
If you can’t access the Advanced Startup menu, insert your installation disc and boot from it. Select “Repair your computer” and then select “System Restore”.

Really. Not a shortcut, not a link, not an icon. The page itself.
I do this in XP. So the MUST be a way to do it in Windows 7.
Any help?
Again, not a link, the real content of the page I want in the UPPER right area of the desktop. It will always be in the BACKGROUND, like wallpaper.
What you are REFERRING to was "Active Desktop"

It was removed starting with Vista due to security concerns and lack of popularity. It was replaced with the Windows SIDEBAR, and then Windows Gadgets, which themselves got removed iin a security patch due to remote execution exploits.

Solve : How can Explorer sort folders by month??

Answer»

I have named some sub folders using this:

month names using 3 letters
Jan
Feb
Mar
Apr
May
Jun
Jul
Aug
Sep
Oct
Nov
Dec

I WANT Windows Explorer  (file manager) to sow then in order.
I found some ARTICLES about this kind of thing, but not exactly  what I wanted.
https://www.tenforums.com/general-support/17943-how-do-you-arrange-files-month.html
Is there a way to do this? Any answer is welcome.
If you created them in order you can sort by date. Then the earlier month folders appear first.

Otherwise you could prefix them with numbers, then sort alphabetically.

Other than that you cannot have it "detect" on it's own that the names of folders are the short names of ENGLISH MONTHS and sort on that basis ANYMORE than you can have it detect when folders are the names of periodic elements and sort them by atomic weight.

The solutions you found apply to Libraries, not folders- but, you could use that.

You can create a library, add the parent folder containing those month names, set it to Pictures, then opening that library and right-clicking and arranging by Month, as shown in the link with the normal pictures library. That will arrange based on the actual date of the last modification for each file and arrange then into sets. for each month and year.

Solve : corrupted window files and how to repair them?

Answer»

I have been having problems with my desktop icons rearranging themselves after ever reboot, just recently I discovered data files that I had deleted restored to their previous location. Something is going on that I don't understand. So via an article online by MS I ran system file checker and got this result "Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to FIX some of them. Details are included in the CBS.Log %WinDir%\Logs\CBS\CBS.log."
Can someone help me figure out how to do this. I am not very skilled when it comes to working with command prompts.

ThanksI'd try the repair disc if one can be made.  http://www.techsupportalert.com/content/how-repair-windows-7-system-installation-disc.htmDid you tryu this?

How to scan and repair system files :
 1.   Click the Start button ,into the Search box type "cmd"
 2.   When Command Prompt appears in the search results, Right click Run as Administrator.
 3.   Now type the command SFC /SCANNOW and press enter.
I did use the sfc/scannow and that's how I did find out the corrupted files that couldn't be repaired . I did find a recovery disk that I made when I got the pc 3 years ago. I am going to see if I can figure out how to "boot from a disk"

ThanksOk after reading the INSTRUCTIONS, Im having a problem BOOTING from the recovery disk. I did hit F12 and it pulled up some kind of screen with various menus but none of them looked familiar. I didn't see anything that said repair windows as the instructions online said. Can I GET some assistance in figuring this out please.

sorry i8s? is that the processor?
Its a Dell Inspiron 3647after some more research i was able to get the pc to boot from the recovery disk and I ran the repair option, but it did not find any problems to be corrected which is confusing since the sfc/scannow did find errors. Any other thoughts?

I thing that the problem is that my ISP (AT&T) is not identified.

Your computer doesn't connect to your ISPs Network. It connects to your Router. The "network" being described is the network of computers and your router. Basically, all the computers you connect to your router are part of that "network". The network name is something that is SET by you or your computer to identify it; it isn't inherent to the network itself. (Though for wireless connections it USUALLY uses the ssid).

That said, "Unidentified Network" usually means either the connection to the router couldn't be made or otherwise wasn't successful.

Does  the Router support Wifi? Is the SSID name you are connecting to correct? Does connecting via a wired connection still work?
He needs to tell US the make and model of the router AT&T gave hime. It has to be set up to turn on the wireless and have a SID and security.

I will look over this manual and see if I can learn something worth sharing. It sems to be a standard DSL wurekess modemt and router.
Here is a look at page 11 on the manual. It says that the station ID and the password are on the side of the unit. So you want to find taht station on yu laptop or tablet.  Your must use the default password, unless it has been changed.

Answer:Router,Modem "Gateway" Supplied by at&t. It better support wi-fi since I am paying for the service.
No problem with wired connection.
I recently switched ISP.  This was a transition from DSL to cable.  The cable provider (Spectrum) provided a modem/router which was wireless capable but, to get wireless working with the modem/router provided by them, I would need to pay $5 more per month.  So, I thought, $5/mo is not much but it still amounts to $60/yr and I might be using this ISP for years.  Also, I found I could not use my printer or any device (2nd computer) other than the computer that was connected to their modem/router when they first activated it.  So, I decided to buy a modem and router; I BOUGHT a Netgear CM400 modem and a Netgear N300 WiFi router.  Now, I'm back to the network functionality I had with my previous ISP; in other words, I can connect up to 4 devices (computers and printer), via Ethernet cable, to the Netgear N300 WiFi router and I have wireless access.

If your ISP is charging a monthly rental fee to use the modem/router provided by them, that would be even more reason to buy your own.  Note: before I made the change from using Spectrum's modem/router to using my own modem and router, I searched for info on doing this with Spectrum and found that they have info on their website about certain model modems they list as specific ones they recognize.

Solve : How many days to the end of Windows suport??

Answer»

I am just now stararitng to get the feel of Windows 7. I am using the64 bit version.
If it ends on hte morning of January 4, 2020, how many days is that from now?
Is there a ready made progrm taht will tell yu how much time yuo have left to a future DATE?
Just asking.  Ignore athis is your don't care.   Visual Basic SCRIPT one-liner
Code: [Select]wscript.echo "Windows 7 support ends in " & DateDiff("d", Date, "04-Jan-2020") & " days"
Output:
Code: [Select] C:\>cscript days_to_go.vbs
Windows 7 support ends in 910 days

Cool 1 line script to handle this.

With lots of commercial applications going to Windows 10 somewhat smoothly and most skipping over Windows 8 & 8.1, I think the transition from 7 to 10 wont be as hard as when businesses went from XP to 7 and there was a need for XP support beyond its cut off date.

I've played with 10 and have it on a new laptop and took advantage of the free upgrade too on one of my boxes. Still holding out not running 10 and still on Windows 7 myself although trying to get myself more involved in Linux use and knowledge of whats available as replacement to Windows BASED apps.

Last night I was messing around with Linux Mint 18.1 KDE 32-bit (i386) build for example trying out free Linux applications that do the same thing as applications I have for Windows as well as using WINE with some that there is no Linux replacement that has all features I want etc, and was surprised that on the system running this it was only using 420MB of RAM of the 2GB available on a AMD Athlon 64 4450B 2.3Ghz overclocked to 2.53Ghz. Performing the same operation on my Windows 7 64-bit system with 4GB RAM consumes about 1.5GB RAM with Windows 7 wanting to idle at around 1GB in use.

I'd like to make the transition to Linux only, but games will pretty much have me sticking with Windows. But for some reason I like Linux Mint better than Windows 8+

The good thing is that Windows 7 will continue to run just like all prior Windows versions beyond the end of support date, so I'm not that worried about it. Worst comes worst I play games on an outdated OS of Windows and do my secure computing on Linux in which I trust Linux more than Windows security anyways so.  Thansk for the one-line script.
But I have a problem.
It does not work out of the box. Is some assembly required? Batteries?
Screenshot attaced. (GIf for clear text.)
This was done inside windows 7 pro 64 bit.

Try them both!
It works. Found and easy way. Just click on the file VBS file from inside windows explorer. Thanks.

Solve : Vga cable?

Answer»

i changed the vga cabel but the new one have not the same resolution as the old one. Did i get wrong cable or what? How many pins does this cable have?      14 or 15

https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Desktops-Archive-Read-Only/Vga-cable-14-vs-15-pin/td-p/321478

Quote

VGA 15 pin cables often have only 14 ACTIVE pins. Pin 9 is missing. (This missing pin is on the middle row of pins, one pin from the END.) This missing pin is a problem for flat screen TVs.

Pin 9 is required by most, if not all, plasma and lcd TV's to supply back to the computer GRAPHICS card information about the available resolution of the monitor. Pin 9 carries a 5 volt signal to the DDC (display data channel). New computer monitors (LCD or CRT) do not seem to need this pin, and work fine without it -- as a result the majority of VGA cables labeled as "15 pin" really only have 14 pins, and this is never explained or NOTED in the packaging or product specifications! The only way to tell if a "15 pin" VGA cable actually has all 15 pins is to look at the connector and COUNT the pins. If the middle row has only 4 pins, then the critical pin 9 is missing

Solve : Is there any other way I can do a REPAIR install??

I need to do a REPAIR install of Windows 7.  But, when I PUT the installation disk in and go through the process it seems I have to click on "upgrade".  That seems to be the only way to do a repair install where you won't LOSE your files and programs.  But, I want to stay with Windows 7.  I saw no other way so I clicked "upgrade" and after it does it's thing I get this message:

Your current version of Windows is more recent than the version you are trying to upgrade to. Windows cannot complete the upgrade.
How could that be?  I have Windows 7 - that's not the latest version.
Is there any other way I can do a REPAIR install?
I've heard you can do an install from a usb zip drive, but I don't think you can do a repair install that way can you?

From a healthy Windows 7 system you can create a repair disc and burn that to a DVD-R. They are specific for 32 and 64 bit and home vs pro etc, so you will want ONE that matches your specific version of Windows. That disc then might call upon the original media you have to replace damaged files etc. Full Info...

Solve : Computer is very slow (and several other issues)?

Answer»

Hello everyone!

I'm USING Windows 7 and I've been having all sorts of issues with my computer. The biggest one is that it's extremely slow, taing several minutes to do even the simplest tasks. The programs often crash too. I have tried running Malwarebytes and Avast scans, Malware removed some files but the issue is still there.

I also can't open Chrome or Firefox at all. I tried unstalling Chrome and DOWNLOADING the installer on Internet Explorer, but nothing happened. It doesn't even show up in the transfer list. In general, the computer seems to be completely ignoring inputs at times.

I would really appreciate any help provided!  1) What is new or different since the last time everything worked properly (ie, new hw, new SW, virus, error, etc)?

2) Boot to safe mode - do things run normally?1) While it's always been quite laggy, I'd say it's gotten worse since I installed qBitTorrent and used it to try to get some programs via torrent. I assumed it might have been infected with some malware or virus, but as I said MalwareBytes supposedly removed everything and nothing's changed. I have also tried several other things suggested online, like deleting programs I don't use or files I don't need, but it doesn't seem like memory space is the problem. Regarding IE in particular, I never use it, so I have no idea why it isn't allowing me to download anything.

2) In safe mode it was much faster, opening programs almost immediately. Only Spotify crashed for some reason, but Spotify has always been slow for me. Even Firefox, which previously I couldn't open at all, worked fine.

If there's any more info needed just let me KNOW, and thanks! Quote from: Kirbs on August 01, 2017, 11:41:35 AM

You must remove any Bit Torrent software. It is not enough to stop using it, you have to remove it.  Any torrent is very invasive and should not be used.
From Yahoo answers:
Talk to your Internet Service Provider (ISP).
There's a 99.9% chance that they are "throttling" you.
And, if you ask them nice, they may explain what "THROTTLING" means, and, why they think they have the right to specifically target you.
Others sources confirm this.   That's weird, I never had that issue when I used it in my previous computer. I imagine it won't solve everything as it struggles with tasks that don't use the Internet as well, but I will remove those and see if it helps. Thank you!Just trying to help. Diagnostics for computer problems cam take a lot of time and effort. In your case, you want to fix the problem RATHER than just identify it.
You may want to break the problem into two halts.
Is it hardware?
Is it Software?
You can boot your computer w with an alternative system that does not use any of the Windows components and does not have to use space on the hard drive.
Examples of such would be
 The Ubuntu demo CD
 The puppy Linux boot CD.
 The Ultimate Boot CD.
The boot CD of Mmemtest86 program.
If these programs also seem to be slow, you might conclude that it is not a operating system problem.
Just a suggestion.

Ignore the advice above. Not all torrents are viral and certainly the torrent client isn't.

Having said that, it does sound as though you may  have downloaded an infected file. I suggest you post in our malware forum and let our malware specialist assist you. Until you are "cleared" by our malware specialist I'm going to lock this thread.

Solve : How to move multiple files to different folders?

Answer»

How do I move multiple FILES to different folders on Windows 7?
There are +500 files and +200 folders, so I am HOPING, that there are faster ways than DRAGGING and dropping. The files start with the destination-folder's name. Perhaps with a batch or a vbscript you can do it !
But, you should provide US more information about where are located your sources files and in which destinations do you want to move  use a program called unstopable COPIER by roadkill i think it is. You point to what you want to move and where, and it wont hault on anything just copy the stuff over.

Solve : Call from tecnical support while running WIndows 7.?

Answer»

I was running Windows 8 pro, 64 bit on my Dell 677 with 4 GB RAM

I just got a call from Microsoft support.

This was the first time ever that Microsoft support has called me. In the past, it was me who called them. So, I was rather surprised. From previous conversations I have had with Microsoft support, I felt uncomfortable speaking to this individual. There was something about him that seemed unusual. He showed me how to get into the event viewer and see that I have a number of things that need to be taken care of.

I also got a message that I do not had a virus program istalled. I thought I did.  A web page came up and showed me info about how to find a good AV program.  So I askeded if I sohould fixx this now.  He said no.

Next he asked me to let him assist me with a remote connection. At this point I gave him an answer that conforms to the local policy we have at this INSTITUTION. Without going into great detail, I told him that I did not have permission to do a remote connection at this time and I offered that he should call me back later. I then hung up.  So far, he has not called back.

I consulted with my administrator and she told me I did the right thing and not to allow him to have remote control of my computer.
So, I just want to say, that if it really was Microsoft support that called me I want to apologize for my rude behavior, but I have to pay attention to the rules of the administrator. Otherwise, she will not cook me my dinner.

Pardon my typos, I want to go eat now and I thought I should post this first.

Although I want my computer to be running very well, it's much more important to me that I have good meals every day.

Would yu have done the same? If you were very hungry?
It isn't MS Support.From here

My administrator tells me I am starting to forget things.  He called back again today.
His name is George and he says this is a new part of Microsoft Technical support.
The connection was not good, so I asked him to call again.
I spoke to  the administrator of this institution and she said I should not do what he says. I Told him that and he wanted to speak to the administrator.
So I passed the phone to the administrator, Ms. Newton, and she was very rude to him and told him there is nothing wrong with our computers and do not call again.
So if he calls again I am not going  to talk to him anymore.

Good.I hope it involved suggestions that his maternal lineage was excessively promiscuous.
Thank you BC. Ms Newton is very stern,  but does not use profane speech. She really knows how to say no and hang-up.
I looked on my phone and the number was not an 800 number. As I recall, a service center will usually have an 800 number so any  customers can call back without toll charges. The number came from the Midwest and was at one time assigned to a private family dwelling, not a business.

I do not think he will call again. this is a scam. They show you event viewer to show you errors, even tho the errors are sometimes ok, then they teamviewer in and ASK for you to log into your bank to pay them. Come on mate. This is old.

Just think of it this way. Does the mechanic randomly call you telling not suggesting, telling you that your cars engine is having problems?

uninstall team viewer, go through your add/remove features/programs to ensure nothing fishy is in there, run a AV test/malware bytes on it and you should be fine.

If not, id personally wipe the thing with fresh windows install.

BTW: he wont call again. Another person will. They have call centers, use fake names and call the numbers looking for $$. Been around for years. CBC market place even has a episode on it. Good luckCBC?  Never thought of that.
Do you think it might CBC creating a story like they did before?

OPP shuts down CBC's social experiment
1 more time...it's a scam...quit overthinking it...Look, it's your bank account. Believe what you want. We don't have to deal with your 'administrator'.

If you want to believe Microsoft Scammers are legit so badly, go ahead. since you've DECIDED that they are so trustworthy that you'll go to bat for them and criticize another country's national news broadcasting network, it obviously doesn't matter what anybody says. Mind you, I doubt your 'administrator' will find the reason "They had a warning on CBC but they did this other thing that didn't work out as they planned so clearly everything they write must be the opposite of what actually happened, therefore I trusted the guy on the phone asking for money." particularly good.

He even left me voicemail!
Then somebody else called and said
- "You did not paid  IRS for income tax."
Now I am a believer!  I will not even give them the time of day.

I got hit again by another firm, but not the the one mentioned in this post.
Somehow, some way, I let them have my Bluebird card. This was a firm that tricked me earlier and for some reason  I let them have my Bluebird Card number.

The things is that if you don't check your account every say, some scam artist will change your card again. It is very hard to get the credit card company  to block those  guys. I was late reporting, so I will not get my money back. I had to cancel my card and ask for a new card. It should be here soon.

In fact, problems like this even happen with legitimate companies. I still have the local water company charging my bank for the water my neighbor uses. We went to the water company  showed them the title deed for the neighbors property to prove that it is not in our name anymore.

Now I have to be careful with my neighbor. He is working on my car.

Laugh if you must. It is not funny to me.

What we may be laughing at is how long it took for our suggestions to sink in...just sayin.

Solve : Bluetooth tether issue.?

Answer»

Hi.
When using my laptop, I use my Samsung Galaxy s5's 3g to connect to the internet via bluetooth tether. I do it all the time. I've done it for ages. Suddenly, when I try to connect, I GET "An unexpected error occurred. Please contact your system administrator."  So I click to troubleshoot the device and it tells me that the driver for bluetooth peripheral device is not installed. I click to apply fix but I just end up with no driver found and a whole bunch of crap. I've attached the troubleshooting details.  I'd be grateful if someone could walk me through what I need to do to fix it.
I tried system restore but it didn't HELP.
My os is Windows 7 Home Premium sp1.
Laptop is HP ProBook 450 G2 64-bit.
Phone is Samsung Galaxy S5 (SM-G900I) with android 6.0.1

[attachment deleted by admin to conserve space]The drivers should be from HP...not Windows. Why do you want to tether via Bluetooth instead of WiFi? Sometimes a Bluetooth tether just works better.
Questions.
The HP is the host? It has the-Internet and shares via Bluetooth?
Does the Galaxy do it with any other laptop or desktop?
Is this in a business with a group policy?
Does your group have have a ban on Internet sharing?

About Wi-Fi:
Yes, using windows you can also share Internet via Wi-Fi by  making a WIRELESS thing  a l"Hot Spot". That might be workaround if Bluetooth will not work.
Firstly, thank you all for taking the time to reply. I really appreciate it.

To answer your questions:

The Galaxy phone is the host.  I use the phone's 3g internet and share it with the HP laptop.

The Galaxy phone doesn't share internet with any other laptop or desktop.

It isn't a business with a group policy. It's  my personal laptop at home. There's no ban on internet sharing.

Regarding Wi-Fi: To be honest, I've never tried it because I don't understand a lot about it (don't laugh!).  I assume that if I activate the hotspot from my Galaxy, my laptop will scan and find it... I'll try it right now.
I tried Wi-Fi hotspot and it's working! Faster as well. For some reason I thought it would be DIFFICULT. A bit of technophobia, perhaps.

Again, thanks for bothering to help. Glad you got it to work.
How do you like the Galaxy?
My rooted s5 is great.  It isn't the latest phone but I find it really logical so I'm not scared to mess around and tinker with it a bit.  My last s5 died after many years of awesomeness so I found another on ebay for au$200.  I'm completely happy with it.

Have you recently installed or updated the driver for your display adapter? If so, did this error occur immediately after? If the answer to these two questions is yes, roll BACK the driver. If not:

1) If you've only had the one BSOD, don't do anything. Just ignore it.

2) If this is one of several with exactly the same information, do the following:

* Download and install the latest Direct-X release
* Download and install the latest driver for your display adapterWell, I did install a new driver a few weeks ago.
And yes, this is the only BSOD till date =)You can roll back the driver or wait and see if there are any more bsod's. For now, I wouldn't worry about it.

Solve : Windows stopped working, takes a long time to start web browsers?

Answer»

Hi Everybody

I am new to this forum. By chance I found this forum and I think I have found correct place to learn about computers.

I was having  few problems in my laptop Windows 7  during fast two weeks.

Windows explorer stopped working
Cannot save files into CD, MP3 and USB
Once log into the computer, it takes nearly 30 minutes to access internet explorer, Opera and Mozilla Fire

Even though I can use internet through above web browsers, once in a way I find computer becomes slow or freeze.

I did following.

SCANNED for Malwares
Checked Startup Services Checked Startup Programs Disabled Thumbnail Creation(Placed a check next on the box that says Always show icons, never thumbnails)
But I couldn't complete the  System File Checker Scan run as it stopped half way. I did it few occasions without success.

On the Start Menu. I typed cmd then right CLICKED  cmd and chose  Run As Administrator  and  typed sfc /scannow and pressed Enter. After that it stopped. In other WORDS it ended as verification 47 completed. Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation.

My Laptop

Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium
Acer Aspire 5741
X64-based PC

I was trying to do few things during last three days according to various instructions and after that was able to work past on the computer. But I couldn’t solve the problem of savings documents on the CD and USB and taking time to start the computer. Yesterday, I installed MacAfee and did some scan. I also noticed after installation of MacAfee it takes ages to start the computer and SHOWING messages such as windows not responding and do you want to end the process etc. In other word when computer starts, it freezes nearly 20 to 30 minutes. I cannot click any icon and if I click above messages are appearing on the screen.
In one occasion when MacAfee disappeared from the task BAR all of sudden
Internet explorer, Opera and Mozilla Fire started to work fast.

Yesterday and today I waited nearly 30 minutes to start the computer and finally started it using safe mode with networking. I am at the moment trying to solve the main problem of taking time to connect to  internet explorer, Opera and Mozilla Fire etc.

I also got the following message when I tried to save a document to USB and and computer started to slow down.

Window explorer has stopped working.
I would much appreciate if anybody can give me some sort of solutions. Thanks and have a nice day!

Solve : Rebooting a Dell laptop?

What OS are you running?  On most VERSIONS of Windows, you can click on the Start button in the lower left corner.  There's generally a menu item there that will pop up giving you the options to sleep, reboot or shutdown.

Is there a way to bypass the username/password to check check the hardrive without installing software?  Thank you.How do you not have the administrator USER name and password for your system to gain access to your deleted e-mail?

There are ways without installing software as long as drive ISNT ENCRYPTED but CANT help with the method because its odd that you dont have your username and password for your admin account.

Maybe the Trash Bin of the e-mail provider still has this e-mail in it...

Solve : When starting it marked almost all files as unreadable.?

Answer»

I was browsing the INTERNET, but I think that I had too many tabs open. I went away for a moment and when I came back the screen was full of horizontal stripes and it was frozen. When I rebooted my computer, it gave me different boot options. I chose to start windows normally, but it FROZE after I clicked once and I had to SHUT it down from the start button. When I rebooted it I tried to start it in safe mode. It listed all the things that it was loading and then froze. When I rebooted it, it said that I have to reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in boot device and press a key. After I rebooted it, it gave me boot options, I chose to start normally, clicked once and it froze, after rebooting the PREVIOUS message appeared again, the rebooting cycle repeated a few times. Then when I selected to start normally it started to check files, I dont know excactly how many were unreadable but it was definitely most of them, maybe all. Then it said "deleting orphan file record section 40", it has been like that for a few hours.

I have not overclocked anything.

I am using windows enterprise service pack one.

I checked the BIOS and the processor speed was 80 something MHz.

Processor is an  i5 or maybe i3 2,6 GHz I dont REMEMBER the model.
Graphics card is radeon hd 6700.

I don't remember anything more.
Either your Win install is wonked or the HDD is failing...run chkdsk /r from a command prompt...
Do NOT interrupt it.orphaned files is a pretty sure sign of one or more bad sectors or a failing drive in general.
from your specs, it sounds like the drive's age is somewhere north of 5 years old.

with that sort of question mark over the drive integrity, I'd be biting the bullet and getting a new drive.
that then opens to door for other silver linings like an SSD upgrade and/or Win10 upgrade.

Solve : old computer doesn't allow updates and blocks every internet page??

Answer»

I've been given a computer by a friend and I'm sure it's over 5 years old, ADVENT make and running windows vista. I don't KNOW which internet explorer version it's running but recommends I update to version 9 (hopefully that'll help in aging this thing).

I've got a belkin surf n300 internet stick as it won't connect to the internet as a wireless device.

I'm tying to download Skype but everything seems to be going wrong.

I've followed instructions to update my windows
And can get as far as

Control panel > security > windows update

But when I try to update it comes up with

Errors found:
Code80072F8F

And this isn't recognised in the "get help" tab.

When I try to GO online and update my internet explorer it recommend internet explorer 9 but I cannot update as all pages I try to open (even googles home page and microsofts homepage) I'm met with a tab reading

Certificate error: navigation blocked

I can either close the window or continue which isn't recommended and when I do continue the search bar TURNS red and another bar pops up saying

To help protect your security, internet explorer has blocked this website from displaying content with security certificate errors

I can choose to show blocked content but it absolutely refuses to let me update both my windows and my internet explorer.

Any solution would be highly appreciated Are the time and Date correct on the SYSTEM? 80072F8F indicates that it couldn't establish a secure connection, and the same applies for certificate errors- both can be caused by the time and date (or time zone) being incorrect.... I am an idiot. I NEVER even checked XD I'll check and change it now

Thank you so much for the tip!

Solve : How to make HE-AAC audio to work in WMP??

Answer»

Does anyone know how to install and get the Orban / Coding Technologies AAC/aacPlus(TM) Player Plugin(setup_AAC_aacPlus_pluginbase_1_1_52.exe) to work?

I have a video file with HE-AAC audio that won't play on my WMP, or VLC, but it does play using MPC.

I've done the following:
1) DOWNLOADED the setup_AAC_aacPlus_pluginbase_1_1_52.exe

2) Double clicked the .exe...I OK'd the licence box, and it installed.

3) Tried to play my file...video, but no audio.

4) I then found a forum that said 'To use a aac+ STREAM in WMP use 'icyx://ipnumber : port' (not HTTP)'. I didn't know what that meant, but it looked like a web address, so pasted that into my browser, and I OK'd a permission box, which opened my WMP, with an 'updated' in the lower RIGHT corner.

5) My file still would not play audio.

6) Re-booted, WMP still won't play the audio of the video.

Anyone know how to get this to work?

Solve : Desktop Background Slide Show?

Hello,

I have a Dell desktop PC RUNNING Windows 7 Home Premium SP 1 2.33 Ghz Quad  4 Gb ram and a 64 bit OS.

I set up the Desktop Background Slide show. I set the the slide show to change every SECONDS and hit save and the slide show works fine when the computer is on but when I shut the computer down and restart it the desktop Slide Show is deactivated and I have to set it up all over again.  This happen all time. Why is the desk top slide show not  being saved !?!?!?!?

Bigal58Is this a company computer or was it once a company computer that was bought used?

If its not being saved to your user profile then it will set you back to what you had prior. It may be that its not locked out from configuration, but that its not SAVING to your user profile. If this is a company computer then you would need the admin of the network to assist with this one to allow for this to save to your user profile. If this was bought used as a decommissioned corporate computer then some registry tweaking may be needed and thats if your not locked out of that.Yes it was a company computer bought used. Ok.

Thanks Bigal58bigal50,

The User Profile Service failed to log on. User profile cannot be loaded.
Can anyone please help me solve this problem. Can I do something or should I go to a professional. Thank youSounds like you have a corrupted user profile.
When you log in (or try to) do you get the message "you have been logged in with a temporary user profile" or something similar?
If so, once logged in, go to Control Panel, User ACCOUNTS and create a new user.
Log off the current temporary one, log into your new one.
Go to Windows Explorer and you can now copy your old user Docs, Pics, Music etc from the old user to the new one.
That is, from C:\users\old name\ to C:\users\new name\Thanks Mark but no I can't log on at all. Not even with a temporary profile Blerina,
Did you already try this?

Follow these steps to use the Advanced Boot Options menu:
    Start (or restart) your computer.
Press F8 to invoke the Advanced Boot Options menu.
Select Repair Your Computer from the list (the first option).
Use the up and down arrows to navigate menu choices.

Do you have the Windows 7 install DVD for that PC?
Windows 7 has an option to repair the system USING the DVD.
You have to boot directly from the DVD.

Hope that might be some help.    No I haven't tried that but can I do it even if I don't have the cd? Yes. Windows 7, 8 and 10 have repair options that do not require the install DVD.
When this feature was first introduced, it was considered a major improvement.

Wiping your hard drive and performing a fresh installation can be a huge headache; but fortunately there's a way to repair a corrupt Windows 7 installation while keeping all your programs, personal data, and user accounts intact. With Windows 7 you can perform an in-place upgrade installation to repair a flaky existing install. Though technically designed to upgrade older Windows OPERATING systems like Vista, the in-place upgrade installation option can also be used to repair an existing installation of Windows 7

Solve : Updates taking a long time?

Answer»

Hi guys...I'm back again!  We do not use our laptop very often.  The last time updates were done was Feb. 18, 2017.  Well, now I have 54 updates to do and I have had the computer on supposedly updating me, however, it has been over 24 hours. I clicked on to stop download but it said it hasn't finished.  After they are downloaded, then they need to be installed which doesn't take so long, I think.  Anyway, is this unusual for it to be going over 24 hours?  It says it is Downloading 54 updates, so far 0% complete.  It's a Dell Inspirion, Intel Core I-5-3210M CPU 2.50 GHz, Ram 8.00 GB 64-bit operating system.  It's Windows 7.that does seem excessively longer than usual, but with downloads, it's not your PC specs that are IMPORTANT, it's your internet speed.
and you do have 6months worth to catch up on!

you've given it 24hrs, I'd be rebooting the PC and checking for updates again.
maybe also unticking them all and just ticking a few at a time to see if they at least come through that way.Hello,

I have had the same problem with a computer; problems started after I had upgraded to W10, but reverted to 7 after (my notebook was not compatible with Windows 10 in some ways, so I had no option really). So, after going back to 7, from within 10, updates were broken for good. I have tried different "solutions" from the internet but nothing WORKED. The actual solution was to do a fresh install of Windows 7 (updates were good after that)

best regardsHere it is, the end of August and I have still been trying to get this laptop updated.  It never stops, just keeps on downloading updates.  I finally turned it off after 36 hours and left it alone until now when my husband just went to use it and it told him it was still downloading.  I know it's a lot of updates, but taking this long?  Is this normal?  Do I just let it go on and on for days and see what happens?
Windows 7 did go through a period where the update process (or an update specifically - can't remember) caused it all to choke up.
there's plenty of Google hits on ways out of that mess.

I was on Win7 at that time and simply decided to turn the auto updates off.

so you could either just forget them, not ideal, but hey, if it gets you over the hump...

what's your internet monthly allowance and general download speeds like?

what about just selecting a few at a time?See, the thing is, Mark, I am TOTALLY computer stupid.  I looked on what updates to do and not to do and I couldn't tell you beans about what it said.  Somehow, from last time I tried this, it did do six updates.  How do I know what speed my internet is?  I have Comcast and it is superfast usually.  I did try Verizon and couldn't stand it and it was slower than Comcast, so I went back to Comcast.  I use Windows 10 on my desktop and I know I drive BC_Programmer, patio, SuperDave, and others crazy when I ask questions, but all of you have been so helpful and so nice to me that I try to figure stuff out on my own as much as I can.  I do get stumped quite often.  Glad you all are here!  A lot of them say Security updates and some say Security Update for Microsoft.NET Framework and some are Update for Windows 7 x64-based system.  Is that any help?  I'm going to let it run for the night and check it in the morning.  If it still hasn't done it, it's getting shut down, and I'll just use it like it is.  It is so seldom used that I'm not too worried about it anyway.  Or do you agree?  I have had enough of it tonight, I'm going to get in my recliner and watch TV for a while and wind down.

I seem to recall having similar Windows Update issues WEith Win7 on several occasions and I resolved them by restarting the Windows Update service:

1. Start->Run "Services.msc"
2. "Windows Update" should be an entry in the list of services. You can right-click and select restart, then close any windows you have open showing WIndows update and re-open it and it might be able to restart and make progress.

It's worth noting that Windows Update on Win7 doesn't really have any concept of download progress. it will tell you 0%, but then won't tell you anything until 100%. It's really quite annoying as it appears to be frozen- And you cannot even tell if it's truly frozen or not, since it never tells you anything beyond 0% and 100%. As you've given it a full day I'd expect it should have completed even a few months worth of updates.

You might try simply rebooting the PC and trying again, and/or restarting the Windows Update service as I mentioned above. Mark's suggestion to only select a few at a time is good as well.
I personally like speedof.me for testing internet speeds, but there are others.
I was only mentioning speeds as I thought, if yours was slow, you could take the PC maybe to a friends, neighbours, who has better speeds in the (vain) hope that the updates may download faster.

At the end of the day, if Win7 couldn't update, I wouldn't BUST a gut over it.
As stated, they are good to get, maybe even recommended, but not the end of the world if you can't.

When I was having Win7 updates issues, I would show all the updates waiting to be downloaded, sort them in size order, unselect them all, then just select the first 5, 10 or so smallest ones.
Then repeat until they all came down.

I'd also leave the .NET framework ones till last (for no other reason than personal preferences)  Hello. I procrastinated downloading updates and when I resumed updating my PC I had to wait a long period of time to get all the Windows 7 updates. Microsoft, however, mentioned that their servers were sometimes slow and not to worry. What PERPLEXES me is when some updates fail and I am referred to a link which will explain the reason why and what I could do about it. I used to persue them. I used to have plenty of time. But now I don't have any time to chase down the reason for the update failure. I update manually as I do not like being in the middle of something and Microsoft posts an update alert. I check every week. I have four Lenovo laptops Win10 and 5 desktops Win7. Thank you.

Solve : Cant reach internet speed of 60mbs using my laptop windows 7 Ultimate?

Answer»

Hi I am from Panama, Central America, I have a laptop Toshiba Satellite C645D... WINDOWS 7 Ultimate.
My ISP (Internet Service Provider) is a company name "Cable Onda"
I am with them like 3 years... my service contract at the beginning was for 10Mb Internet speed, they them upgraded the internet speed to 20Mb and there was no problem I was able to do my speed test and all was very good.. This year they upgraded my internet speed to 60Mb, this is a free service they provide to their old custumers.
But now the problem is that I cant get that speed in my laptop, when I test the speed using the same webs I always use, (http://www.speedtest.net/es/)(https://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/), I can get only lke 25Mb to 33Mb .. there are a few times  I get 40Mb, but not the 60Mb. A Tech came to my home and made a speed test (wireless) with his Laptop and he is able to get the 60Mb using the same web I MENTIONED before, so basically isnt my ISP problem it SEEMS to be my Laptop or the OS of my Laptop.  We tried wireless or attach directly to the ISP modem/router and it is the same, cant reach the 60Mbs, but the point here is like I said before, The company tech came and tested the internet speed with his own Laptops and they are able to get the Internet Speed of 60 MBS, not like always but they made like 10 test and they GOT like 55Mbs to 60Mbs. Can someone help my trying to solve this issue?.

Thanks in advance for your help

Solve : How to add "Find" (Ctrl+F) to the context menu??

Answer»

Hi!

I want to add "Find" (Ctrl+F) (Menu bar > Edit > Find) to the right-click context
menu of my Windows 7 Pro pc.

I want to be able to select some text, right-click on that selected text, and have
"Find" appear as one of the options to then left-click on.

And after I've left-clicked on "Find" in that context menu I want the actual "Find"
POPUP window to appear (i.e., what happens when you press the Ctrl+F keys)
with my selected text pasted into its search window and the "found" numbers of text
indicated and highlighted in the body of the page. All I need do then is to click the
up or down caret, or press enter, to move the focus to the next found text.

My goal is eliminate the tedious and repetitious doubleclicking to select text, then
keying Ctrl+C to copy the selected text, Ctrl+F to open Find, and Ctrl+V to paste
my copied text into Find's search field.

I'm using Firefox 56.0 (64-bit).

ANYONE KNOW of a way to accomplish adding "Find" to the context menu?

Thanks! I'm WONDERING if you are making it all harder than it needs to be.

I use PaleMoon (a Firefox fork) and I can double click the word I want, hit Ctrl+F and it preloads the selected text into the search field, ready for me to Next or Previous or just hit Enter repeatedly.

I've recently stopped using FF after being a long time user but would be surprised if FF didn't do it the same way.In Firefox 56.0.1 (64 bit) I can highlight any text and hit CTRL-F and the search bar opens with that text inserted. When you say "search", do you mean searching the INTERNET, the web page you're viewing, or what?

Solve : Desktop shortcut (.lnk) file association?

Answer»

The file association for the desktop shortcuts was CHANGED from "Unknown Application" to Access.  Now clicking on the shortcut links it to Microsoft Access instead of what is in its properties to "OPEN With" such as Excel. How can i change them back?If it were me, I would creature a new shortcut and delete the old one.
That is based on my own limited experience. It is just too hard to edit and modify a shortcut. It is so much easier to make a new one.
I agree with geek on this one, additionally if you find that .lnk's ( shotcuts ) are all somehow associated with access you have a different problem on your hands.

Years ago a malware infection caused .lnk havoc... Its rare to GET hit with this these days. More info here: https://malwaretips.com/blogs/lnk-file-association/
Windows Repair by tweaking.com has a feature to restore the .lnk associations. Thanks everyone. Deleting the old shortcut and creating a new one doesn't work. The lnk extension is still linked to Access. I'll check out the other suggestions and post how THINGS go. I guess i could always restore the latest backup, but trying to work this out is kinda fun. Till next time... Doesn't make sense...how did you create the new shortcut > >,,,and did you delete the old one before creating the new one :? ?

If so your'e infected...
Have you tried to Change file associations by following the steps below.

To set File Associations in Windows 10/8/7, Open Control Panel > Control Panel Home > Default Programs > Set Associations. Select a file type in the list and click Change Program.
