Solve : windows 7 error 403?

Answer»

A few days ago my avg anti VIRUS wouldn't work and the avg notification suggested I reinstall. this download wasn't allowed and a WINDOW has appeared on my laptop saying server returned STATUS code 403.
avg and my computer is now working o k but I cannot get rid of this error 403 window. I've tried system restore. any ideas please? Thnxmaybe a screen shot of the error message will help understand the issue.
have you CHECKED out MSCONFIG to see if any EXTRA processes have been added to the list?
I assume you have rebooted the Pc and this message comes up every time?I would ditch AVG and find a suitable replacement...they are not what they once were at all...

Solve : Notification bar Icons stop displaying on taskbar?

Answer»

Sometimes when I open my laptop the icons including the WiFi icon on the notification bar stop DISPLAYING. It only appears when I restart or again log on my PC.
Please solve this issue. Please provide system info, what make/model computer or if custom build all the specs etc. Also what OS are you using EXACTLY and which edition of it. Lastly have you had to clean out any infections from this system and when was the last time that this system was built fresh with a clean installation. As well as please feel free to SHARE any other info helpful in assisting in its troubleshooting.

I have seen this sort of problem cause my multiple causes and most common is that the DRIVER itself which ads icon to system tray is the cause and reinstalling a fresh driver for the NIC sometimes is the fix in which the driver itself came with a system tray utility icon which i have seen in wireless adapters. Clicking on this generally opens up tools and other features specific to the network adapter.

Solve : Need help troubleshooting elusive system lag?

Answer»

Alright, I've made a breakthrough, although it just makes everything more confusing.

I use a program called jetclean from time to time, it searches out and deletes dead files etc, it's an excellent cleaning software. While I was using it I looked through the settings and saw that there's another software by the same company called jetboost, and decided to check it out. One of it's unintentional uses is that it allows you to quickly and easily target any and all processes and services on your computer, and lets you temporarily disable them with a single central button. Well, using it's recommended settings, it stopped 20 services and enabled 4 of its own boosting techniques; cleaning the ram, clearing the clipboard, disabling automatic updates, and enabling the "jet boost power solution". Now, at first when I used this software to see if it would restore my PC to its original speed, it did, and I was elated that I could finally find what service was causing the problem. After going through every single service in the list, none of them restored my system's speed and response time when disabled. However, I still had the 4 EXTRA options to chose from. Obviously it wouldn't be something like clearing the clipboard or disabling automatic updates, so I checked to see if the "jet boost power solution" was restoring my system's speed, and to my surprise, it was.

Here's all I can find about this option:

"Changes your power settings to high performance"

From the website:

"Game power solution:Optimizes your PC power setting to deliver a powerful gaming experience"

That's literally everything. The weird thing is, I've always had my power settings set to high performance. It's doing SOMETHING to my PC to make it not lag anymore, and I have no freaking idea what. As relieving as it is to have a solution to the problem, it's just a bandage, and I still don't know what specifically is wrong. I have to just always have this program running with this option in order to have a not-laggy computer. The fact that I have ABSOLUTELY no idea why my entire system is EXTREMELY laggy, and became extremely laggy out of nowhere, is still bothering me.

I might just backup my ssd, format it, and reinstall windows. I don't advise using JetClean, it's garbage and you're messing stuff up with it.  That's the technical explanation I think....

You don't need to do anything to optimize your SSD

What are you measuring the latency with?

Uh, I haven't actually measured any latency so far, I've just kinda been "feeling" it

So far I've just been trying to single out any particular cause of the system lag Quote from: Fluffers on December 18, 2017, 04:11:37 AM

Is there anything in particular I should be looking for? To be honest, this is the first time I've ever heard of internet latency being capable of causing system lag, I wasn't even aware that it was possible. Are you saying that you are experiencing latency whether or not you are connected to the internet?Perhaps the power options that the setting you mention adjust are found in the advanced power options? In the control PANEL if you click "Change Plan Settings" next to the plan and then "Change Advanced Power Settings" there are a number of different power options. You might want to write down the settings as they APPEAR before and after you set the option in the program, which should help you determine what it changes so you can do it yourself.

Solve : Windows 7 Pro won't update?

Answer»

I've been trying to get Windows 7 Pro to update and I get the following message:

Has this computer ever received updates before?

Has this system ever been infected with malware?

Is this version of Windows 7 Pro legitimate or a cracked install off a download? ( Many cracked versions out there I have heard have update locks on them to prevent the system getting flagged by Microsoft as "You could be the victim of Piracy, Not a Genuine Windows Installation... etc")

Was this system once a corporate computer where it WOULD have gotten its updates from a local server service to where its a group policy setting to disallow local computer control of updates?

Do you have the system recovery media if you need to reinstall clean the OS to the computer?I've been getting updates on this system for many years.
It has never been infected with malware to my knowledge.  I run Malwarebytes, Spyblaster, Kaspersky TOTAL Security, CCleaner
It is not a pirated version of Windows 7 Pro.  I'm not computer savvy enough to know how to even get one, never mind INSTALLING a pirated version.
It was never part of a corporation.  Strictly Home Computer.
I have the original Windows 7 Pro CD from which I installed it.
I have no idea how to do reinstall clean the OS.
Thank you for your response.See Here...I just tried to get Windows to update again and it took a very, very long time for the window to load.  When it did there is a very strange button on it which I did not click on.

Clik it....NOTE do NOT interrupt it if the update process starts...
I've clicked on the button several times, however, it doesn't "depress" as buttons do when clicked on, and nothing happens.  I've let it just sit for a while as the window itself when it initially loads takes quite a while, so I figured that possibly it might be the same for clicking on the button.Looks like the Update Service isn't running. Enter the following from Elevated command prompt

net start wuauservI wasn't exactly sure as to what 'net start wuauserv' meant so I googled it and found some other suggestions to try before doing as you suggested.  The easiest one was to change the settings to "never update' and Save, then restart, and then change the settings once again.  Voila!  It worked!  But I never would have found it had it not been for your suggestion.  Thank you.  My computer is now up to date.Glad to hear that you solved it, that's good detective work

Solve : How can I boot from an external Hard Drive.??

Answer»

But not an excternal eSATA drive. I mean to say it is  an exrernal hard drive that has a USB interface. This drive I have used as an extrernal backup device.  I am sure it is in good condition. Now I what to see if I can make it bootable and use it as a normal thing any time I want to boot up some other operationg system.

In this case I want to use a legal 32 bit Widnows 7 DVD to intstall WINDOWS 7 onto my extrernal hard drive taht was untill now used onlyu as a backup device. It is a older IDE type with a USB interface.

I read sosmewhere taht you can boot Windows 7 from a USWB flash drive. If so, then it ought to be more EASY to do it froma standard hard drive using a USB intterface. Is that right?

I found this articl on wickihow. Nowbefore I try it,  I want  to see if you know more about this. Here is the link:
https://www.wikihow.com/Boot-from-an-External-Hard-Drive

I have an old Dell 755 desktop with a triple boot. I do not want to jepordise my triple bnoot setup, so I would like to the anexcternal drive.
(No, I amd not lazy. Everytime I open up my Dell to do anything I cringe at the thught that I might bradk something. It is not a full size destop and I am getting to be very clumsy. It is likely I will break something. I have before.   )

Any suggesntion?  This has been done to death years ago. Face it. This is not going to work. Windows is designed to run from an internal drive. Furthermore, the EULA specifically stipulates that you are licensed to install Windows on an internal drive. Maybe some brave/crazy souls have committed demented brain surgery on a Windows install to make it run from a USB drive, and coaxed it into limping into a crash-prone state, do you seriously think you will get anything like convincing performance with all the disk i/o crawling down a USB wire? And even though in theory it can be done as a LONG time Member knowin our regulations you should be elsewhere askin this...just sayin...My problem is that I forget as fast as I lern.'Yes, I now recall taht you can not do what I w ant to do.
So this things the show up ion in a serach really confuse me. There ought to be a BS (Bad Source) filter in Google to turn of the BS that shows up.

Wiat.. if they did that they would lose a lot or revenue.

Thanks for the reminder. I will use an SATA drive and hang it over the edge of the case cover.  If the cables will reach.PM'd Geek on a legal way to do this via sticking to SATA connection similar to it hanging out the side but cleaner and low cost. Most would go with a removable drive bay for a 5.25" bay, but I went with a different method to connect a bare drive externally to get SATA speed vs the USB bottleneck and its all legal.

This wont work for older systems with IDE drives though.  That system likely has a SATA port in it might be older 150 or newer 300 speed, but not 600MB/s.Thanks for the PM.
What works was something like what  you siad. The objective is to get Widowsd to see a hard drive on a SATA port and connected to the bujil-in stuff.

This Dell 755 has two SATA ports and a floppy connector. And lots of USB ports. But Windows 7 refuses to install no a hard drive on the any USB port.

He is what  works. Remove the DVD drive and make it extrernal with an eternal PSU and a USB / SATA adapter. Th BIOS has not problem booting from an external DVD drive on a USB port. The legal  Windows 7 install DVD sits there.

In BIOS disable the SATA 0 device, but leave it connected. Bow connect a second SATA Hard Drive to SATA-1 and make sure it is enable in BIOS.

Now when the Windows 7 DVD  is booted, it only sees the seconddrive as the only drive. The first drive is physically present, but not enabled. So at last I have a new install of Windows 7 on a clean hard drive. No I can do the test I need to do  to see why I can not install a specific program .

So that was the answer. Just make the DVD drive the external drive. How simple!

Thanks for yur  help.  You really think that posting about breaking the EULA is a good idea?

There is no 'legal' way to do it.  I'm thinking of two words, the first one is Village Quote from: Quantos on December 25, 2017, 02:06:52 PM

Solve : How to upgrade a Windows Vista machine cheaply?

Answer»

Hello i have an old Vista WINDOWS machine that i use just for browsing the internet and i want to upgrade it so i can use a newer version of Chrome or IE, but i don't want to invest to much more in this machine, so can i upgrade to Windows 7 as i see that i can purchase the Windows 7 software for 29$ versus 119$ for Windows 10, thanks for any pointers!Out of curiosity, what make and model of computer is it?

Or, if you built it yourself, what motherboard/CPU/RAM is currently installed?$29.00 Win7 is likely not legit...

Link to the vendor ?Here's the link, but i see what you're saying as i see that Windows 7 cost upwards of 150$ on Amazon, so very strange INDEED!
https://msofficeworks.com/product/microsoft-windows-7-home-premium-sp1-1pc?gclid=Cj0KCQiA38jRBRCQARIsACEqIevYRtsnY9e96oekYGTOhvaZZs5qYO3TcFlEO40rm1uNrQ3wffyGUJcaAiyXEALw_wcB

Ok so if that's the case, there's no way i'm GOING to pay over 50$ for any kind of upgrade, so can i then maybe upgrade to Ubuntu as i see i can install that for under 50$ and just wan to use the PC for the internet.

Ok and i will need to wait to get home and see what the specs are on the machine, thanks again! No PROBLEM...we can wait.

Ubuntu won't cost you a Dime...it's free...

Let us know. That site is a key reseller. They buy software product keys from users who are otherwise not supposed to give them away, (such as MSDN subscribers), and then resell them at prices that are much cheaper than the retail price for a legitimate copy of the product. Then later when Microsoft discovers those keys being misused, they ban the original subscriber who got the keys for breaking their Terms of Service, and  all the keys associated with the account are blacklisted- so sooner or later a key you buy from a place like that will just stop working.
And yes i do think we had it custom built and because when starting up the machine a product label of PowerSpec appears and i think that's the brand name that MicoCenter uses for their in house built machines, but i will get those specs and get back later tonight or tomorrow!

Ok and great news on the 0$ cost Ubuntu as that SOUNDS like the way to go, have a good one guys and thanks for the awesome quick response!Correct...PowerSpec is MicroCenter's house brand...Ok sorry to get back later than i thought and so its an Intel(R) Core(TM) 2 DUO 4GB 2.40 GHZ E4600 so should i order the following UBUNTU CD?

Ubuntu 16.04.3 LTS Desktop - Install/Live DVD (32-bit):
https://www.osdisc.com/products/linux/ubuntu/ubuntu-16043-lts-desktop-install-live-dvd-32bit.html

thanks again!
Yes...the live can be burned to a CD and ran from the CD drive...the other part of the ISO is for installing it.

And actually i would get both ISO's directly from the Ubuntu site to be honest...Link for Ubuntu downloads
https://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop

Ubuntu 16.04.3 LTS is an excellent choice.
Thanks a lot guys for the super help, Happy Holidays!Same to ya Bob...Welcome Aboard...Ok many thanks again Sage, Mastermind, all.......i uploaded 16.04 to a PC and to an old AMD laptop and they both work great, so going to use these machines for youtube, HULU ect, thanks again guys and hope you had a great holidays, wow what a team you all are!

Solve : Error Getting Win 7 SP1 64 bit Through Windows Update?

Answer»

When I TRY to GET the Windows 7 SERVICE Pack 1 for x64-based Systems (KB976932) through Windows Update, it fails with the error code 8024200D.

I've tried multiple troubleshooting suggestions but none works, including the Windows Update Troubleshooter and clean reboot.Guessing this is a clean build of Windows 7 and your trying to patch to latest?  Was this Windows 7 installed from a download or original disc? Why not download it manually?
Dave, it was an old laptop my sister-in-law gave me. I was actually trying to install the iTunes but it says I need SP1, which I then realized the Windows doesn't have SP1.

How do I check if it is a clean build, and if so, what should I do? SALMON Trout, I have manually downloaded it from the Microsoft website, but it is an ISO image FILE. Should I burn it into a CD and execute it? Quote from: Michael on January 06, 2018, 09:07:30 PM

Solve : New member ... New (to me) computer with Win 7 Pro?

Answer»

First, I want to say hello to the active members here and how excited I was to stumble across this site! I was a member of the original Computer Help Club back in their MSN days. I followed them through the years ... Now on Yuku with like, 3 or 4 active members who haven't posted for a couple months.
Now to my issue ... I purchased THIS machine, after running an XP machine for like, 14 years, from a private seller who buys them by the pallet from the local school systems. I don't know how he cleans them but, when I turned it on, it was like turning on a new computer ... all it had was the default programs, which I have no clue if it was a complete list. It took a whole lot of patience over a few days for all the updates to install, which I only installed the critical ones, etc. and left all the optional ones for a later time. It is much faster than that ole bogged down XP machine became.
I don't have a lot of complaints but, it does have its quirks like, when I open some programs, they open in a small window, no matter how many times I resize them. AND the screensaver seems to be overly sensitive ... it never stays on. I have posted on the Microsoft forums and a member there suggested to do a "Clean Boot", disabling programs one by one to find the culprit ... I still have this huge learning curve as to what potential this VERSION of windows has over XP ...
I guess what I am asking here is this ...How can I find out if everything that is suppose to be installed has installed?
I had Malwarebytes (Free) and CCleaner (Free) on the old machine but, have not installed either on this  one. I no longer do all the random surfing I did with the old one. I am using the Windows firewall and AVG (Free) for protection at this time. If I need other protection, someone please enlighten me.
If I need to separate these issues in separate topics, I can do that as well.Well, THAT didn't work so well ... I thought I would at least get a "Welcome" from some regulars ... :-(Welcome Aboard...it sometimes gets quiet around the Holidays.

What specific issues/questions you having with Win7 ? ? Quote from: Rich73Kelly on December 29, 2017, 09:00:17 AM

I don't have a lot of complaints but, it does have its quirks like, when I open some programs, they open in a small window, no matter how many times I resize them. AND the screensaver seems to be overly sensitive ... it never stays on.

First issue is a bit vague. (Which programs?)- generally speaking though it would be up to the APPLICATION to save/restore window positions if you sized it last time it was launched, though.

Screensavers stay running until they detect keyboard or MOUSE input, so it would be detecting one of those. (Of course if the monitor is set to power down after a certain period of time then the screensaver won't be visible)"First issue is a bit vague. (Which programs?)" ... The MAIN one I've noticed I haven't had issues with before is WinAmp... I have the CDG plug-in  to view Karaoke files ... anytime, I view them, the graphics screen comes on at 1x ... I can change it to 3x or, full screen and, still, the next time I open WinAmp and play a file, the graphics window is back at 1x. If this is a setting within WinAmp, which I agree it should be ... I haven't found it.
Screensavers stay running until they detect keyboard or mouse input, so it would be detecting one of those. (Of course if the monitor is set to power down after a certain period of time then the screensaver won't be visible)
Screensavers stay running until they detect keyboard or mouse input, so it would be detecting one of those.  I can't get the dang quote thing to work properly ... lol ... Anyway,This is not the case here ...The screensaver is set at 5 minutes, the monitor at ten. I can be sitting here, the screensaver will come on and the monitor will turn off ... within a few seconds, the monitor just comes back on, without touching either the mouse or keyboard. I can be gone for a couple of hours and when I come back, the monitor is on ... Unless the mouse (Verbatim Model 98196) is just that sensitive to surrounding movement, which there isn't really a lot of.That is an issue in the Winamp Plugin.

Quote
,This is not the case here
Well, I was literally explaining how screensavers are designed. However- screensavers have nothing to do with the monitor turning off (or back on).

You can see what devices you have that can interrupt any sleep state (which includes the display powering down) with this command in command prompt:

Code: [Select]powercfg -devicequery wake_armed

If you are using a wireless adapter, keyboard, or mouse, that could cause it. For the latter two, it could be due to LOW battery most likely. They could also be defective. And the issue with WinAmp is an app setting...it's not Win7 being the culprit. Thanks for your replies and suggestions here ... Happy New Year to both of you.
BC_Programmer, ... using the command you provided, the results are as follows, ...
HID Keyboard Device
Intel(R) 82579LM Gigabit Network Connection
HID-compliant mouse (007)
I manually copied those as I couldn't do a copy/paste in the command prompt window ...
Also, I understand, the screensaver has nothing to do with the monitor turning off (or back on) ... I was simply stating how I had them set. The keyboard and mouse are both USB wired. I would love to be using a wireless keyboard and mouse but, I don't care for the way they eat up batteries.
So now, according to the results of the powercfg code, ... Does this mean something within my network connection, ie, router activity, might be waking the screensaver?
As far as the WinAmp issue I'll have to dig through the settings and see what I might be able to find there ...
Another thing related to "quirks" I noticed since ORIGINALLY posting, ...If I open, say my, mp3 folder, no, wait ... oh, this must be a setting within the program as well ... I didn't notice THAT till now ... I am using TugZip 3.5 for my unzipping utility. When I open it, there are four columns ... They are ... "Name", "Size", "Item Type" and "Date Modified" ... I hope I can explain this so it can be understood here .... the "Name" column has, say, all the CD titles listed in my zipped CD folder ... only part of the titles are visible so, if I hover the mouse pointer between the Name and Size columns at the top, the double arrow with a vertical line between them appears to move the Size column over to read the full titles in the Name column. Good, now it should stay there (at my preference),when I close the window but, it doesn't ... next time I open TugZip to unzip and listen to a CD, it is back where it was. I have to slide the column over again to read the titles. I can't find a preference setting to correct it.

How to repair and reboot to Windows 7:

a) Insert the Windows 7 System Repair DVD or Installation DVD and reboot.

b) Select the correct keyboard input method and click ‘Next’.

Note: If you are using the Windows7 Install DVD then at the 'Install Now' prompt (Do not pick the Install Now option) instead choose the 'Repair your computer' option located in the lower left of the display.

c) The System Repair tool will search for a valid operating system and will report that “Windows found problems with your computer’s startup options. Do you want to apply repairs and restart your computer?”

d) Click ‘Repair and restart’ and reboot again to the Windows 7 System Repair environment.

e) Click ‘Next’ at the keyboard selection prompt and when the ‘System Recovery Options’ screen appears verify that the “Use recovery TOOLS that can help fix problems starting Windows” is selected.
Note that on your Dual Boot system there now should be only one operating system listed. Click the ‘Next’ button.

f) Now from the menu list select the ‘Command Prompt’ option.

g) At the DOS prompt type the following three commands:

bootrec.exe  /fixmbr

bootrec.exe  /fixboot (may return an 'Eliment not found' message)

bootrec.exe  /RebuildBcd

h) Close the command prompt window and click the ‘Startup Repair’ option.

i) The repair process may take some time, so wait until the process completes at which point you may or may not see two messages “Windows cannot repair this computer automatically” and “Startup Repair cannot repair this computer automatically”. GO to stap j below in either case.

J) Close this message window by clicking on the X in the upper right corner of the Send/Don’t send window. Next click on the ‘VIEW advanced options for system recovery and support’ option and from the main menu once again click ‘Startup Repair’. This time the repair process may only that a few seconds and when prompted “Startup Repair could not detect a problem”, click ‘Finish’  and RUN the ‘Startup Repair’ option one more time, click ‘Finish’, and then remove the System Repair DVD and click ‘Restart’.  Reboot the computer.

Solve : Scheduled Task Missing - Yet partially there - How I fixed it?

Answer»

So I went to add a scheduled task on a Windows 7 Home Premium system this afternoon and was running under a user level account. The user level account has access to running batch files and exe's so I didnt think logging on as system admin was necessary.

However after creating the scheduled task it complained about the account not being part of a group that allows for scheduling of tasks and suggested that I add the ability for the user account to be able to do this. So at that point I figured ok I might as well logon as system admin and have the scheduled task run from that level.

However now when making a scheduled task with all the same info including task name, it complains that that already exists. When looking at what schedule tasks were on the system, it wasnt listed even when using refresh.

I decided to look online and see what is going on. As for I cant have a PARTIALLY created orphan scheduled task out there that might hang up the system when it runs at 2am because it wasnt happy with the PRIVILEGE restriction of the user account that by which it was created from.

Found this article here: https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/office/en-US/0f985ec9-51a5-4ebe-9b83-aec746f18223/where-are-my-custom-scheduled-tasks-they-disappeared-from-all-2008-r2-server?forum=winserverManagement

The scary THING about this issue is that the scheduled task was created but not completed. When running a query for it it was no where to be found such as here:

C:\Users\admin>
In this Microsoft article it pointed me to looking for the task in the system32 folder of Windows under tasks folder, and in there I saw the scheduled task that I tried to set up that failed but by which it said it already exists when trying to create a new task as same name with correct privileges, so it appears that Windows Scheduled Task Manager writes the scheduled task file to c:\windows\system32\tasks prior to confirming that the user actually is allowed to create a scheduled task.

So I deleted this file and then went back in as system admin and created the scheduled task and success. And this time its properly registered with the task schedule manager and shows in the query as [ Daily Backup  1/22/2018 2:00:00 AM   Ready ]

Figured I'd share this in case others run into this at some point. Microsoft should really have made this state that you cant create a scheduled task until permissions have been set for a user account vs allowing you to get to finalizing the scheduled task to where it states you cant and then it writes the scheduled task anyways to tasks folder of system32.

Here is Microsoft Documents of Task Scheduler: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc722152.aspx

Solve : Cant reach 60 Mbps in windows normal mode?

Answer»

Hi I have a TOSHIBA SATELLITE C645D-SP4144L - Windows 7 Ultimate
I am paying for 60 Mbps, but I cant reach that SPEED with my Laptop (Wifi and NIC), so my Internet Service Provider came to my home and test the speed with their computers and they can reach the 60 Mbps easy, when I tried with my Laptop I can only reach 10 to 25 Mbps max, so the problem seems to be my computer. So I tried to run the Laptop in save mode with networking and tested the speed using Wifi and my NIC card and for my surprise I got 55 to 58 Mbps with both (Wifi and NIC Card), so it seem that something is not allowing the 60 Mbps speed in normal mode. Can someone help me please ?
I would CREATE a new user account on the computer. Logon as that new account and then run the speedtest and see what happens. The only thoughts I can think of on a restriction of speed is if something was installed that is DOWNLOADING in the background that doesnt happen in safe mode. A different user account may be immune to a torrent or something that is using your laptop as a seed, in which your usable bandwidth is reduced as your traffic and the torrent traffic happen at the same time. Such as if you had something downloading in the background and then measured a speedtest it will SHOW a lesser bandwidth because the lesser is what is available with the other traffic going on.

I'd ignore that suggestion for now as for you had a fast connection with this computer in safe mode.As of now all his suggestions can safely be ignored...

Solve : Unknown folders on external drive??

Unknown folders on external DRIVE?
Recently, in one of my external hard drives, the following folders have appeared in the drive ROOT:

7fb7dac2bb16c4aa9c7238e97b5bcc7c    empty

65c8d890d8d994d8302e43b3f93c    empty

531a420f86442b4ff51cdb7b   'Setup.exe' inside

629d83dea8849fbf3adb1b  have to open with 'admin', folder 'amd64' inside

ab9251f6adfb6282d66a83a8  have to open with 'admin',  folder 'amd64' inside

b8854913dead8cf1a6

Anyone know how and why they appeared, what they are for, and is it safe to delete them?

Thanks!

Win 7 64bitLooks like vid driver files to me....how they got to root i have no clue. They look like Windows update folders to me (folders sometimes created when updates are INSTALLED). They are generally created in the root drive and ultimately deleted. In any event, feel free to delete them. Thanks everyone for your fast responses.  Once a month I run CCleaner....the next time I run it, I'll see if those folders are 'cleaned'.quite often with those sort of files, when you go to delete them yourself, you get a 'permission denied' error.
if that's the case, CC won't be able to delete then either.
I use a LITTLE utility CALLED Unlocker to remove them when that occurs.Another thing you can do with unknown files is create a new folder...move them there ...if the system runs fine for a week then delete them.

It is normally hidden...for good reason and shouldn't be written to or messed with...
It is normally created on the D partition in plain sight but should not be used unless necessary.Question.
The version of Windows 10 I not have does not seem to hive a recovery partition.
Is it possible for make one?if there is a recovery partition, it gets created during the initial install of the OS.
go to Control Panel, Admin Tools, Computer Management, Disk Management and you should see it.

if there isn't one, you can't manually make one.
There are a few different kinds of recovery partition.

The first is an OEM recovery partition. These are the recovery partition that is on the HARD disk of a laptop or desktop you buy from a manufacturer like Dell or HP. They are used alongside tools provided as part of the installation to create recovery DVDs as well as to perform a Factory Restore. For example, my Lenovo Thinkpad T550 came with Windows 8 Home and therefore had a partition that would be utilized if I wanted to do a Factory Restore.

Another kind is installed by Windows 10. (possibly Windows 8 as well). This is a Windows Recovery Environment and will be booted if the system FAILS to boot a specified number of times. It is a good idea to keep this one around as it will provide some capability to troubleshoot the system if it encounters boot issues. it is also necessary to access a few boot options.

A "Third" kind is sort of unusual, in that some motherboards actually provide the capability to create a "recovery" partition. With those motherboards you could install your OS environment and the desired PROGRAMS onto a partition, while leaving unallocated/unpartitioned space on the drive, then enter the System BIOS and create a recovery Partition out of that installation that you can "factory reset" using the BIOS later, wiping the existing data on the drive and restoring it to how it was when you created the image.

Solve : Two blue screen crashes?

Answer»

Hello

Over the LAST two weeks, I have had two Blue Screens of Death. The first time, I was able to recover the O/S and log on to Windows 7 using Packard Bell recovery disks although I lost most of my files and programs.

The same thing has happened today and I went through the same recovery process, except I received the FOLLOWING message: 'Windows set-up could not configure Windows to run on this computer's hardware'. Does that mean that my hard drive (SATA 500Gb) is corrupt and needs replacing?

Many thanksYou could try running a diagnostic on the drive.

Run hard drive diagnostics: tacktech.com
Make sure, you select tool, which is appropriate for the brand of your hard drive.
Depending on the program, it'll create bootable floppy, or bootable CD.
If downloaded file is of .iso type, use ImgBurn: imgburn to burn .iso file to a CD (select "WRITE image file to disc" option), and make the CD bootable.
For Toshiba hard drives, see here:

Note : If you do not know how to set your computer to boot from CD follow the steps here
Hello Dave

Thanks for your message.

I did that earlier today. I think the program itself is called Sea Tools (Seagate hard drive). I did two tests, a basic one, which it passed, and two advanced tests which it failed.

Does that mean that the hard drive is corrupt? If so, and I need to replace it, can I retrieve Windows using the Recovery disks I burnt through the Recovery part of the PC itself a while ago, or would I need a new Windows installation CD which I would also need to buy?

Thanks! Quote

It could mean that it's failing. I'm not sure whether the Recovery disks can be used on a new drive. Le'ts run another test to see what's causing the BSOD's.

We Need to Diagnose Your BlueScreen
1.When you boot your machine, press F8 to list the startup options, exactly as you would if you were trying to enter Safe Mode
2.Select "Disable Automatic Restart on System Failure", as shown here:

3.When your system BSODs, write down the STOP error code, as well as any written out error message back here. The STOP error will always appear, but the message may not. You are looking for this:

Hello Dave

Thanks for your message.

I don't get as far as the Safe Mode, Safe Mode with Networking, etc screen. If I turn the PC on and allow it to run, it just says 'missing operating system'. If I press the DEL key (set up) it shows me a list of items - CMOS, product details, etc). If I ESC from that screen I again get the message 'missing operating system'. So I restart and press F12 which takes me to a 'Please select boot device screen'.

So, I feel as if I can't really go any further.

High1Download the OTLPE Standard REATOGO Windows Recovery Environment.
 • Place a blank CD-R disc in to your CD burning drive.
 • Download OTLPEStd.exe and double-click on it to burn to a CD using an ISO BURNER. One can be found here.
 • Reboot your system using the boot CD you just created.
 • Note : If you do not know how to set your computer to boot from CD follow the steps here
 • Your system should now display a REATOGO-X-PE desktop.
Hello Dave

I have done that - thanks for your help.

Yes, I can see Raetogo loading WinXPI can see the logo now - set of penknives, and a kind of desktop with various icons (disk partitioner, etc)Yes, it has lots of helpful tools and I think there's one to analyze your hard drive. You can also access and save your important material.I'll try Disk Investigator and Test Disk and post backTestDisk cannot READ the FAT boot sector - 'Invalid FAT boot sector'. I know Windows uses both FAT and NTFS.

The other tools are wonderful if you are a mathematician - numerous tables of figures!

I don't think Reatogo can see the drive. There is a tool called MBRFix - it's like a MS-DOS/Cmd Prompt screen. The cursor is on drive X. I have changed it to drive C (my drive) and it says: The device is not ready. My drive is divided into C and D (data), and it gives the same message when I try to change the directory to D.

So, I think a new drive is required.

Speak a little laterThe MBR tool is when the Master boot record is missing or corrupted. You should be able to look in your C drive. The MBR tool looks like Command Prompt. In the tool itself, the default drive is X, but when I changed it to C it gave me that 'device is not ready' message which, I think, means that the MBR tool is unable to 'see' the C drive. I am taking it that that is because the drive is corrupted.Ok. I had to boot my computer with the OTL disk so I could give you proper instructions. First, click on My Computer and see if you can click on the C drive. You should be able to see the programs on that drive.

Check the Windows Audio service, is it running?
If not, start it and set it to Automatic.
Hope this helps. There is another apperant problem that is not service RELATED. Most forum sites, TEND to point towards replacing the audiosrv.dll file. Which I have done, as well as blowing out several of the installed components and drivers that run the audio system. None of which, have solved this problem. Can you describe your EXACT problem? Solve : Ctrl-alt-del?

Answer»
Does anyone know a way to send the Ctrl-alt-del keys to a remote MACHINE? I have a remote server I use though a TERMINAL session and when I disconect I want to lock the screen and not log off.

If you want to lock the screen and the standard Windows shortcuts are not working on the remote machine (tried Windows+L?) create a shortcut to rundll32.exe user32.dll,LockWorkStation
That's one solution anyway. On Windows Vista you can just right-click on the taskbar and click task manager (which is what comes up when you press these keys). Quote from: Spoiler on JUNE 24, 2008, 12:51:18 PM

When you disconnect from a remote you will automatically be LOCKED out. You may not see the standard lock out screen, note that after disconnecting you are asked for your username and password. If you are worried about people sitting at the computer you were using to remote in on. They would still have to have the pw to get on your remote, plus you could always lock or logoff that machine without having to logoff your remote connection. Hope this helps.I will give it a try....I am on site now so I can play.

Will POST how things work out.

Solve : Weird Internet Issues?

Answer»

Hello,

I've been having a really weird issue with my new laptop. If anyone can shed any light on what is causing the issue, and preferably advice to FIX it, I'd greatly appreciate it.

First some PC information:

Zoostorm Laptop purchased last December
Windows XP Professional SP2 (had Vista installed but crashed out all the time + I didn't like it, so reformatted with XP Pro)
Core 2 Duo T7700
4.00 GB DDR RAM (3GB recognized, 32bit windows)
nVIDIA GeForce 8600M GS
Atheros AR5007EG Wireless Network Adapter (connecting to Belkin Pre-N router and Satellite internet with HN7000S modem)

The problem:

As I use a laptop and am sometimes running on battery power, I often use the hibernation feature to save time. After I've been using the laptop for X number of hours (let's say 18 hours) I start getting weird issues when I'm browsing the internet. At first the problems are just mildly irritating: Pages sometimes seem to "hang" on loading and a refresh sorts it out. It gradually gets worse THOUGH. I start getting images showing up in the wrong places. For instance, say I'm browsing a photo gallery and eBay. I might suddenly get one of the images on the photo gallery turn up on eBay where an eBay image should display (anyone ever experienced this? lol). As I continue to use the internet and as the time ticks by, so it gets worse. Sometimes I will press on a link and instead of displaying the page, my web browser just attempts to download the page. When it gets to it's worst, I can try to go to a page and it will instantly display "The page cannot be displayed" and every time I press refresh it goes to the error page instnatly without attempting to load the page. If I refresh about 20 times it will suddenly work correctly. At this point (or sooner) I reboot and the problem is fixed.

As you can imagine, this is rather annoying and puzzling. I've tried using Mozilla Firefox instead of Internet Explorer, but the same problems occur.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,
SteveUnfortunately standby and hibernation can be a bit tricky and from my own experience I know some machines simply can't wake from standby/hibernation properly.
What you can try is to update all your drivers.
Since this is a laptop I recommend you get the newest drivers from the manufacturer of the laptop. Also, are you using any spyware removal tools?  If not, post back and we can recommend some.

And, I suggest you download CCleaner and use it on a regular basis.  Get the Slim version at http://www.ccleaner.com/download/builds  Run the Windows scan and have CCleaner remove all from your hard drive.  Before running the Windows scan, you may want to unselect some of the scan options, but I suggest you be sure to inlcude Temporary Internet Files, Cookies, and History, under Internet Explorer.   Then, run the Registry scan.  When prompted to backup the registry, do so.  When CCleaner has finished the registry scan, have it fix all ITEMS found.Deerpark: I didn't experience this problem on my previous laptop and I used hibernation then. However, I had to download a patch from Microsoft to make hibernation work at all for this laptop. I was getting an error that suggested I didn't have enough memory (LOL 4gb). Perhaps that patch didn't work correctly.

I'll try to leave my laptop switched on all day one day next weekend. That should confirm if hibernation has anything to do with it or not (I suspect it might myself, and what you say confirms it could be the issue).

I downloaded all the latest drivers December/January; however, I could try checking for updates.

Does anyone here have experience with using over 3 GB of RAM? Maybe there are some tips since Windows doesn't recognize it.

soybeen: I use SpywareBlaster, ADAWARE and Spybot Search & Destory as well as CCleaner. I use Kerio (Sunbelt) firewall and AVG Antivirus. I also use a couple of other programmes in addition to CCleaner for hard drive cleanup and registry correction/cleanup.Have you been checking your laptop temps? No, it doesn't seem possible to monitor temperatures on this laptop  However, it seems to run pretty cool when I'm just browsing the internet (cool compared to GAMING, for instance).

I've had my laptop switched on for 4 hours today without hibernation. I'm already starting to have problems with web pages freezing (just a white screen or partial loading before hanging) and 1 web page attempted to download rather than display. By tonight I'll probably be forced to restart.

Any ideas? It seems to be related to the length of time I'm online. The longer I'm online, the worse it gets. This problem only occurs on my laptop, not on other computers on the network.if i were you i would download a program called speedfan cause this dose sound like you laptop is heating upOk, I downloaded the SpeedFan programme, here are the readings:

HD0 - 34C
Temp1 (ACPI) - 30C
Temp2 (ACPI) - 59C
Core 0 (CPU) - 44C
Core 1 (CPU) - 44C
Core (GPU) - 61C

I can't manipulate Fans/Voltages/Speeds

I don't really know what is typical etc., as even when I had a desktop computer the temperature censor didn't work lol.

If I start getting the internet trouble and reboot, the problems are nonexistent after the reboot for another x number of hours. Surely if it was related to hit, rebooting wouldn't improve the issue?

Edit: Here's one of the error messages I also get, not sure if it is significant:

Error Report:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Server Error: 501 Not Implemented
Operating System Error Nr:6: S_errno_ENXIO

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

No RPM for this combination of URL and methodWhat type of connection is it?
As for 501 Not Implemented error, check here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/811262I'm connecting to a Belkin Pre-N wirelss router through the built-in Atheros AR5007EG Wireless. The actual internet connection is a mobile satellite system with HN7000S modems.

Other laptops use the same router and internet connection with no problems. So it must be something to do with my actual laptop.Did you try my link?
I asked about the type of your connection, because I found some posts concerning Operating System Error Nr:6: S_errno_ENXIO , and they are all tied up to satellite internet:
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=Operating+System+Error+Nr%3A6%3A+S_errno_ENXIO+&btnG=Google+Search
You may want to dig through them. Thanks for the links. I've had a look, but to no avail.

I'm going to try posting on the Datastorm users site to see if anyone with my connection has experienced the same problem.

If I don't get any joy there, any more ideas/suggestions?Did you try M$ link from my post #8?Yes, and I tried disabling HTTP 1.1. Things seem a bit better, but I'll need to keep testing it for a day or two to be sure what's going on with it.

Now I get this error message on my modem page after a few refreshes:

Error Report:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Server Error: 504 Gateway Time-out
Operating System Error Nr:6: S_errno_ENXIO

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

URL parsing error

I'm not too bothered about that though, because I don't get that error when browsing the internet. The internet problems I've had don't come with error messages generally.

I'll keep you posted after trying some things. ThanksSounds good

I'm still getting same error.I got that error last NIGHT but the next time I clicked on it, it opened. I LOOKED at it again on my laptop and everything appears normal but on my PC, I still get those two adverts saying the page can't be opened. I'm going to compare my settings with the settings on my laptop to see if they're the same. Keep us posted. Quote from: SuperDave on June 14, 2008, 06:17:19 PM

Some sites open like this and when this happens, I have to click back about 5 times before I get any action. Would a reset solve this problem? It appears that some parts on the page can't not be displayed or not available. I tried the same site on my laptop with Vista and there is no problem.

This happens when you change your host file to get rid of tracker adds. I think you downloaded a new host file that has the loopback address for the adds on a site so that the tracker in the adds doesn't get loaded....when this happens you get the screen that says your machine can't find the web page. When you click about 5 times what is going on is the pages goes THOUGH all the adds on the page one by one. Look in the lower left coner of IE when you click. You should see a IP flash there  127.0.0.1.

If you want to change this than rename your host file.
I never thought about that. I'm going to check my host files. Here is an example of my host file....

the tracker sites all have my local machine's IP so I get the posts on the web page like the image in your first post. When you hit the back button he reads the add sites again. If you have 3 adds on the page you end up clicking back 4 times. One for each add...3 and than one more to get to the last page....

I still believe this is an issue on the site's end...CNN and Acoustic guitar are the only two sites that I have that problem. I click "back" and I get 127.0.0.1, click the second time and get the same isp. This happens about 5 times before I get back to the man page. I even deleted the hosts folder. No change.I finally fixed my problem. I dl'd "HostXpert" and did a restore microsoft hosts file and everything is cool. The 127.0.0.1 clued me in as to how to repair it. Very well Just one week in MRU and I've already cleaned up one problem on my computer. It's well worth the money. Cool, dude

Solve : Shortened downloads.?

Answer»

I have a phppb forum and when I try to download the sql database, either from within the forum CP or the web hosts CP I get varying length downloads. I know the present database length is 35MB but the download will stop at anything between 7MB and 20MB, whichever CP I use. There aren't any errors and the download closes NORMALLY. I can then open the database and it is fine, no corruption, as I read down the file it just STOPS, again no errors. I am using Vista Home EDITION. I do a fair bit of downloading and don't have any other problems. I don't use a download manager.
Any suggestions please.Hmm, I installed a phpBB forum via a hosting web server's CP and did not have to download anything.  I don't recall whether I had to install sql database as a separate step but, if I did, it was easily done via the CP.  In other words, the hosting service provides sql database, no need to get somewhere else to get it.  The phpBB forum was also installed by simply clicking on an icon in the CP.

So, I suggest you see whether you really need to download sql database.  As FAR as the problem you've experienced with downloading it, I have a direct answer for that.I should have mentioned that it is a backup I am trying to do.
You said at the end of your post :

"As far as the problem you've experienced with downloading it, I have a direct answer for that."

Could you enlighten me?Sorry, I meant to say I don't have an answer for that.

Solve : Select multiple items in Vista?

Answer» What's my problem?
Some folders in Vista do not allow mutiple items to be selected and copied/moved. The mouse will only select one item at a time. Selecting a SECOND item deselects the first. CTRL+A does nothing. Checkbox mode does not help either.
So moving large quantities of files has to be done by hand one at a time.

What do I want?
I want to find a WAY to select and manipulate multiple files as I did in previous versions of WINDOWS.

Nope, selecting a second item deselects the previous one. Shift and/or Ctrl don't do the trick as they used to.

Solve : wierd internet problem?

Answer»

We have a wireless device Linksys model that is running DSL wirelessly throughout our house to 2 laptops and 1 desktop. The desktop is the main network computer and is running Windows 2000 prof. ONE laptop is running XP and mine is running Vista.

Until yesterday night the internet on my computer worked fine, but now when I try to access certain WEBSITES the connection times out or doesn't work. Google, gmail, as well as others don't work, while STUFF like facebook or YAHOO still does. I can access google through the kproxy.com website, but this is real annoying especially since my email is through google.

This is a universal problem for all 3 computers on the network. Is it possible this was caused by the new windows update sent out? The desktop is running Zone Alarm but I do not think that the firewall on that computer should be affecting the other two computers.

Any help with this matter would be greatly appreciated.Oh, and I am using Firefox browser but the same problem occurs in IE, so I don't think it is the browser all of a sudden.First thing i would try is dis-abling ZA on all the machines involved and see if the condition persists...we had tried that but it didn't seem to make much difference. We turned off the ZA on the main computer. My computer doesn't have a firewall up and NEITHER does the other laptop.

Solve : power on problem?

Answer»

I have a HP Pavilion dv9000 120 gb hard drive with windows vista :(Last week I was having trouble connecting to my home network and I sometimes restart my laptop and it will reconnect to the network. This is what I had done and when it restarted it went into an automatic checkdisk mode with the statement that I could cancel or continue but windows vista strongly advises to continue. So I let it continue. After it was done it rebooted and was working fine. Was connected to network and on the internet when i just turned off. I pushed the power button and it came back on and GOT almost through the boot up when it shout off again and would not turn on again. I let it sit for about 12 hours and tried it again and it powered on again. It WORKED for about two days and it shout off in the middle of me using it and I could never get it to turn on again. HELP what could be the problem? When a computer just shuts down without warning the problem is usually heat related.
Are the vents free of dust buildup and is the the fan running?
Are you using it on a hard flat surface in a cool area?Yes to all your questions. I THOUGHT that the checkdisk that it done might have something to do with my problem? But it worked OK after checkdisk (scandisk?) didn't it?

It still sounds heat related to me.It only worked about 3 minutes. Quote

Solve : Disapperaing Files?

Answer»

I need to work out how to RECOVER files I can see in DOS but not in WINDOWS.

The background is that I am running Vista. I use Windows mail which I keep on a separate drive ( E:\). I was trying to wipe free space on the E drive using Paragon Disk Wiper when I panicked because I thought it was wiping the entire disc, so I cancelled the wipe. When I started my email, it defaulted to the store on the C drive. I looked at the E drive with Windows Explorer ( set up to show all files ) but my directory Windows Mail had vanished.

I tried to set up a new folder called Windows Mail on the E drive using Windows Explorer but kept getting a message SAYING there was already a file called Contacts and did I want to over write it. I said "no " and used a different name.

However, this made me think and I went to a command prompt and looked at the directory for the E drive. It showed there was a folder called Windows Mail, and when I looked at its directory, I discovered it included all my contacts. It also has a very large file calledWindowsmail.msmessage store, and I assume that this is where all my emails are.

I tried to copy this to the C drive by typing copy windowsmail.messagestore c: and got a message saying that 1 file had been copied. However, I COULD not see it on the C drive either in a command prompt or in Windows Explorer.

I assume that all my emails are still there but not in a format recognised by Windows. I also assume, being an optimist,  that I should be able to recover them.

Can ANYONE give me a clue how I might do this?

Many Thanks.

Have you attempted a System Restore ? ?yep i tried a system restore but it didnt help. I dont want to REINSTALL and macaffe says there is no malicous software installed but i did download a couple ebooks a day prior to when this happened
How are you running all those programs, since you can see "My Documents" window only?
Did you try Safe Mode?Hi, i have a dell xps210 vista premium,4 1yr now.
and exactly the same thing happened to me
last week? it took a few attempts at system restore
point but luckly it worked. I know this isnt much help
just thought id let you know it happened to my P.C.
hope you sort it ...P....
Fortunately I know zero about Vista, but it looks like Explorer.exe isnt running. If this works in Vista, try to HIT CTRL ALT DELETE and then click on File....NewTask(RUN) and TYPE in explorer.exe and hit OK. Should allow you to get to your usual if it works in Vista.

Solve : Two ISPs on the same computer?

Answer»

We presently have Earthlink dial-up because Earthlink does not have any high-speed SERVICE in our area. We are switching to cable, Comcast. We would like to maintain Earthlink for a couple of months after we initiate Comcast so we will be guaranteed e-mail access until any problems that might arise are worked out. Is it possible to simultaneously have both dial-up and cable high speed CONNECTIONS on the same computer (ACTUALLY, COMPUTERS as we have two Dell DESKTOPS, one Vista and one XP) and alternate between them as needed? If so, how is this done?

Thanks. How do you normally access your Earthlink email?  Do you use Outlook Express or what?
Basically, the answer is, yes, you can do it.  But, more info from you first would be helpful.Makes no-`ense¬

tracing my steps of what i did yesturday are

1.enabled PAE/ disabled DEP or i think i did :/(for first time) now i get 3336 INSTEAD of the old 2xxx..(i didnt restart comp) the 512 doesnt show up now either??

2. had some time so i decided to download anti viral software
( kaspersky)...after being plauged by AUPD.exe ,i ran it , and found a million virus's (over 1000)or so , i then quarintened and removed them..(did not reset comp still)

3.then i left comp runnin all night downloading farcry2!!..i never leave my comp on all night!!..

4. woke up in the mornin farcry2 was done..did NOT try to install it, comp was working fine,,i reset my comp.

5..now i get BSOD irql not less or equal.., i can only open safe mode & safe mode command line nothing else works...

WHAT I TRIED

1.reversing DEP PAE setting i changed(still says 3336 for mem tho)
2.i tried pulling mem sticks one at a time  to see if they were bad.(i dont know tho if thats how u test them)
3.tried disableing nvida drivers from device manager(heard nvida drivers can casue this)
4.removed kaspersk/ software i installed that day
5.checked msconfig for abnormal start up properties
6.reset  dip switch on mobo for bios

nothin works ??, ive had same hardware for yr now with no changes, and never had this problem??

now im sad...and no farcry 2...
any HELP would be appreciated    Quote

still says 3336 for mem tho
It's normal. 32bit system, even with full 4GB of RAM installed, will only show/use 3GB+change.

If you never used any AV program, and Kaspersky discovered millions of viruses, save yourself (and us) some time, and reinstall Windows.ok will do, i thought about doing that then someone told me, "no that wont work, thats a hardware/memory error" witch got me worried at first ,but,as i said ive never had a hardware conflict....so its gotta be software/drivers.  I have a feeling its from the anti-virus software drivers installed the day before CONFLICTING with my never updated vista ... & safe mode wont let me edit/delete drivers from system anyway like you said no use messing with a MESS..im gonna re install os

 thanks again  You're welcome
However, two most common reasons for "irql not less or equal" error is overheating, or bad RAM.i get this when i have 2 gigs of ram in... i take one out its fine....

i think... my mobo was causing one ram to overheat cause it would get really hot so i got a new mobo... if it works ill tell u!

Solve : Need to get rid of a panel?

Answer»

I am running Windows VISTA on an E Machine.  When I connect to power  a panel pops up that has 5 language on it.  If I click on any language it disappears.  If I leave the panel alone it will be at the bottom right corner of my monitor.  If I click on it then the "display settings" panel comes up.  When I delete the panel it never shows up again, even if I shut down and start up again.  If I power up , like in the morning, it goes through the whole process again.  This is no big deal but I would like to get rid of it.  E Machines tried to help me but no joy.  I asked Microsoft but they will not help those who bought a computer that all ready had Windows installed.  Can anybody give me any suggestions.  Thanks   BobCan you post a screenshot? Thanks for your answer.  I am new to computers.  I don't know how to post a screen shot.  If you will tell me I will try to follow directions.  I am good at that, I have been married for 58 years...    Ha Ha   Bob Quote

Solve : Please Help - Laptop Will Only Hibernate?

Answer»

Hello; I'm terribly sorry if this is the wrong place to be posting this question.

Yesterday I let my laptop (a Dell Inspiron running Windows 7) hibernate at the end of the day.  Before hibernating, it brought up that window that says something to the effect of "a program still needs to close etc." - although it then seemed to hibernate anyway without a problem.  Today, when I turned my laptop back on, it went right to my desktop immediately (without the "Resuming Windows" loading screen) - and the "a program still needs to close" window was still there.  I clicked "Cancel", and everything then seemed pretty normal.  I found this start-up unusual, though, and went to restart my laptop so it could boot up cleanly.  The Restart button did absolutely nothing.  Neither did Shut Down or Sleep.  My laptop would not respond to Ctrl+Shift+Escape or Ctrl+Alt+Delete either.  The only button under the Shut Down menu that worked was Hibernate.

I accessed the internet and looked up the problem; I found a few places suggesting to open task manager (which I did by searching for it), and end the processes labeled with my username one by one.  I started to do this, making sure to end only those labeled with my username.  As I did this, my Windows Dock disappeared, and so did the taskbar, start button, and everything else - leaving me with a blank desktop: no icons or anything, just my wallpaper.  I sort of FREAKED out and closed task manager - only to realize I had no way to open it up again.  My laptop is still stuck in this state.  It will hibernate if I press the power button, and will do its "Resuming Windows" deal NORMALLY if turned back on - but of course, it only loads my "blank desktop" again.

What can I do to fix this?  I was thinking of booting my laptop in safe mode, but I have never done that before, and I have no idea if it's the correct thing to do.  I would greatly appreciate any help.I'd reboot it in normal mode. Quote from: Fed on August 28, 2012, 07:42:42 PM

I'd reboot it in normal mode.
Thank you for the reply.  Sorry for being terribly ignorant, but how would I do this?  Is it an option under F2 Startup Options (I think?) when Windows is STARTING up?
I'm rather afraid to touch anything for FEAR of making things worse, so slightly more detailed instruction would be lovely. I'll say up front I'm not into laptops but I'd hold my finger on the power/off button until it switched off then just turn it on like you normally would.
You won't damage it. Quote from: Fed on August 28, 2012, 07:59:30 PM

ALRIGHT; I shall take your word for it and see if that works.   But wait! After it reboots you will then have to find the program that wasn't shutting down properly. Quote from: Fed on August 28, 2012, 08:05:14 PM

I did as you said and rebooted normally - lo and behold, it worked great!  I'm typing this from my formerly incapacitated laptop right now.
I'm pretty sure the program that didn't shut down was my Windows Live Messenger, as it was the last thing I had open before telling my comp to hibernate.  Do I need to do anything with it?I wouldn't worry about it unless it start doing it again.Ok.  It was an odd little thing to have happen, but I'll keep in mind the simple solution if it does happen again, without panicking and trying to find quick fixes like that task manager thing online.  I guess I could've just rebooted it from the start, but I wasn't sure whether that would hurt my laptop.  Better safe than sorry, I guess!

Thank you so much for the help, Fed.

Solve : Desk top icons not staying where I set them?

Answer»

Recently I got a virus via an email sent from a friend which TOOK over my PC. I have resolved the problem (?) by doing a system restore & running AVG anti-virus temporarily to FIND the CULPRIT which I was able to remove. ( I normally only run Microsoft Security Essentials without dramas).I then deleted AVG so as not to conflict with MSE & then ran MalwareBytes & Spybot to clean out any other problems. All seems to be OK now however I cannot get my Desktop Icons to stay in my preferred location. I have tried unchecking & rechecking Auto arrange & aligning icons to no avail. I can m,ove them around the Desktop OK but when I restart they return to the left hand side of the screen  Any ideas please. I am using WINDOWS 7 Did you uncheck align to grid?

The consensus here: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en/w7itproui/thread/f20210cc-ba8e-44e1-a94c-4f7262e90c06Good morning barndoor and welcome to CH

With windows 7 right click on the desktop go into personalize, click on change desk top icons on the left of the screen, a new box opens un-tick the Allow themes to change desktop icons box.

Also you can try check autoarrange, and then uncheck it. This removes the check from whatever sort you have set now.

If the above don't work this usually works http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/save-and-restore-desktop-icon-layout-in-windows-vista/

Please let us know how you make out, Mike Hi hartbeatmr,
Thanks for your reply. Your first suggestions unfortunately didn't work so I have tried the howtogeek link & it has sort of worked. I still have to SHIFT+ right click & click Restore Icon positions every TIME I restart which is a pain but at least I can find what I'm looking for a bit easier. Checking & unchecking the display options have no effect. If I uncheck Align to grid it will be checked again when I reboot. Everything else seems to be working Ok since the virus problem I had except for this. I guess I'll just have to live with it.
Thanks again,
BruceA little program like iconoid (http://www.sillysot.com/) can save icon positions and restore them at boot (or any time you choose manually)

Solve : how to find value of Y-axis from a given value of X-axis in MS Excel?

if the ordinates of X-axis are
0.25, 0.5 , 1.0 , 1.25, 1.5

and we have to find value of Y at X=1.33 !!!! how that can be done ?Forecast option won`t work, as the values are not steady.Sorry, we don't do homework here.thx for your assessment , this is not a homework, i was working on something else ( daily rest and work hours of staff) and i was having some problems in that, this i just posted as a example. Well, if I misjudged the purpose of the QUESTION I certainly apologize patio
thx but i was`nt looking for the answer, like i mentioned this is not some sort of homework, this was just an example, only if the data would have been steady then FORECAST would have helped but ..... anyway i think i might need to look for something else.
Allan
its ok !!! i guess my way of asking the question might have caused you to think that it`s some sort of homework assignment falik, you gave 6 y ordinates but only 5 x ordinates. Why? Did you omit 0.75?

Also, what did you mean the Y values aren't "steady"? Those values you gave look like interpolation would be quite suitable.

[update]... I expect the OP is LONG gone, but thinking about this, POSSIBLY curve fitting would be an appropriate method, but we don't really know anything about the range of data - those example figures may not be representative.

Solve : How Can I Install Device Drivers Manually In Win 7??

Answer»

When I connect my Android Tablet to the PC via USB, Windows 7 installs the wrong driver automatically. I have the correct driver in a folder but when I try to update in Device Manager > "The best driver for your device is already installed". If I uninstall the driver the device disappears from Device Manager.

How can I locate the device & install the driver without Windows interfering Have you tried it via all the steps in this process?
http://www.addictivetips.com/windows-tips/how-to-install-hardware-or-device-drivers-manually-in-windows-vista/
truenorthHere's the method: during the driver update process select - "Browse my computer for driver updates" then select - "Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer" select - "Have Disk" - browse to where the new driver is stored - Select it.

The drivers don't work anyway so back to square one. So just to be clear your connection between the 2 DEVICES cannot be achieved. Both with the alleged "The best driver for your device is already installed". and somehow you have determined that the downloaded driver you had wanted to install manually also doesn't work. Is that correct or have you still been unable to do the manual install to see if it will work?truenorthThe manual install worked but Windows doesn't like the driver. It depends on what you're trying to get the phone to do as WELL. Install the basic driver will usually only allow you to connect to the phone as a mass storage device or in some cases connect to the internet through the phone. Sometimes you can't do anything with the phone.

If you want more functionality than this, you will likely need to install the software suite that either came with the phone or it can be downloaded from the manufacturer's website. For example, the software suite for Samsung phones is called Samsung Kies. Software like this is sometimes required to get complete functionality out of the phone when connected to a computer, and sometimes EVEN basic functions like browsing the contents or connecting to the internet. It really varies from manufacturer to manufacturer and even phone to phone.

Quote from: moonape on March 11, 2012, 09:46:48 PM

The manual install worked but Windows doesn't like the driver.

What do you mean it doesn't like it? Can you be more specific?

Are you sure the driver you gave it was compatible with Windows 7? XP, Vista, and 7 drivers are rarely interchangeable. The culprit was a USB hub. I bought an A4Tech Hubmaster 4 port USB Hub (with PS2 CONNECTORS and audio jacks) from Maplin Electronics in London. Although the Hub charged my mobile phone & recognized the wireless keyboard, it would not read my iPod or USB stick so I returned it. The sales assistant  persuaded me to exchange it, this time it read the USB stick but not the the iPod however I decided to keep it.

Whenever the Tablet was connected to the PC, Windows would not recognize it & gave error messages when I tried to install drivers. I had been trying like for 2 days with drivers from various sources, as soon as the USB Hub was removed from the equation Windows recognized the Tablet & installed the USB driver. There was still an ! mark next to a USB device in Windows Device Manager so I installed one of the Onda drivers & it disappeared.

The lesson here is don't use faulty hardware because you can get unpredictable results.

My Question what is happening how do I fix and will I do damage by turning on and off many times just to start Laptop thankyou very muchhttp://pcsupport.about.com/od/fixtheproblem/ss/bootorderchange.htm
Your BIOS has been configured to boot from the network card as a priority. We want it to boot from the Hard Drive instead.Ok so I am a beginner so if I GO into BIOS and change the boot drive to Hard drive as main one and save should be fine any other order after that
My laptop is an AKOYA ffrom Aldi, if i cannot fix just means have to send to SYDNEY ,NSW brom Brisbane and will be without it for 4 weeks do not want thatYeah it should be fine after you set it to "Hard Drive."Ok, thank you tried resetting but which one is actually the hard drive ,sorry to be a pain there was about 6 things on my list The one that says Hard Drive or HDD. Just move the Network option to the bottom. Also, replace the cmos battery.Whats the Cmos battery and from memory their was 2 HDD one was CD rom I THINK and what are SATA there is 2 of them but only one has a place again TY so muchThe CD Rom is not a HD nor was it identified as such in the bios. Solve : After new HDD install, computer does nothing without freezing?

Answer»

Hey all, i need some help! I purchased a 3TB hard drive YESTERDAY and installed it without a hitch. I backed up all my files to it and proceeded to fill it up. I left my computer on overnight downloading a large (64GB) file. This morning i found it was frozen on the windows logon screen, (which was weird because that means it restarted at some point). After a restart, The computer Froze at post. I unplugged the 3TB hard drive and can boot into bios no problem, but cannot load windows from the other hard drive, it freezes at windows startup logo. So i unplugged ALL hard drives, hit the CMOS reset button and TOOK the battery out, put the battery back in and tried to load my windows 7 disc WITHOUT any hard drives plugged in, It freezes during the 'Loading Windows' process.

I will keep messing with it but i really dont know what else to do.

Thanks,
-DTBrand and model of the computer? Did you do any formatting and partitioning of the new HDD and if so in what file format? Is this an internal or external HDD? truenorthCustom built with an MSI Neo4 Platinum Mobo
I formatted GPT and PARTITIONED NTFS
it's an Internal drive

I didn't notice anything wrong with it yesterday everything was smooth sailingSounds like a process was interrupted during the download (transfer) and has corrupted the HDD's . Any possibility to temporarily try to read the drives on another computer to see what is readable? Have you tried to get into safe mode on either drive? I presume that your windows 7 O/S was still on the original HDD before you lost CONTROL of the computer. If you were able to determine why the computer shut down during the night that could have a pointer. If you can get into safe mode and set the computer to an earlier time that might get you out of this. truenorththe thing that throws me off is that even without the hard drives plugged in, it freezes when i try to run the windows 7 setup disc.
I dont have another computer that supports SATA
I am having trouble booting into safe mode, the only options i get are startup recovery and boot windows normally.
yes win7 is installed on another HDD, and it freezes after the loading windows process.
Thanks for your input!safe mode freezes at

Loaded: \Windows\System32\DRIVERS\AVGIDSEH.Sysalright, i've figured it out, the 3TB drive was causing problems, but now can only use the 3tb drive in an enclosure (which means the speed of the drive has significantly decreased)

if anyone else has this problem or any more ideas I'd love to hear itJust a parting observation re the "possibility" as to why this might have occurred (and i certainly will bow to more knowledgeable CH hardware experts to venture if i am off base here ). Could it be possible that the point of connection on the MOBO had insufficient power available to run the drive? If the "case" is powered that would overcome that problem. However if the case is not powered and is relying solely on the power of the USB port then that theory goes out the window i suspect. 3 TB HDD drives are in the upper range of the latest available drives and more than likely using high rpm (compared to earlier drives) so maybe their power DEMANDS are greater. Whatdeya think? truenorth

Solve : Brand new to my pc?

Answer»

I just made the switch from Mac to PC.  I literally bought my computer last night.  My OS is Windows 7.  When I open up a program there is some lag time.  I was wondering if there is a way to speed my computer up a little.  I know windows 7 comes with a lot of extra programs I don't need.  I didn't know if I could wipe my computer down to just the essentials I need, in exchange for a faster computer from program to program.  I only use this computer for school.  I use Microsoft Office mostly.  I still want to use my computer for internet, PICTURES and listening to music, but that's about the extent of it.  Any ideas?Unfortunately PC's today ship with alot of preloaded junk INSTALLED...mostly by the manuf. themselves...
Since it's brand new i'd spend a week or so going thru anything in Start/Programs and decide if you need it ...or not.
We can't see the machine so it's hard to decide for you...
Once you have WHITTLED that down i would highly SUGGEST a little app called StartupCPL...by Mike Lin that gives you control over what loads at startup...a common cause of wait times...
This will place a Startup Icon in your Control Panel to launch the app...

NOTE: do NOT uncheck any items if you don't know what they do...you can report back here if you need to know whether it's needed or not...

Did i mention it's Free ? ?Thanks! I've begun sorting through programs, weeding out what I don't need.  If I just right click, and select delete, will these programs be gone from my computer entirely?  I've heard that even when you empty your recycle bin, those files are still somewhere on your computer.  I don't know if there is any truth to that.  You can't just delete the programe like that, you need to un-install it go here and download Revo un installer http://www.revouninstaller.com/revo_uninstaller_free_download.html as this does a better job than the windows un-installer.
Use that to un-install the programes you don't want.
As for your question about if the files are "still there" once deleted, yes they are, when you delete somthing the computer flags the sectors of the hard drive that the files occupied as empty, the info is still there until it is overwriten, the same as a mac. Quote from: Dyl Main on March 07, 2012, 06:16:04 AM

The items in the start menu are shortcuts. iirc the equivalent on Mac OS (Classic) would be aliasses, for OSX, symbolic links (I think OSX still calls them aliases, though, for consistency).

As Bacon Buttie notes, you need to uninstall using the add/remove applet.

Also, regarding Revo Uninstaller: It should only be used if the program in question either doesn't have a add/remove applet or refuses to uninstall.Yeah, don't use Revo to uninstall unless a program is being stubborn and won't uninstall.

Let Windows use the program's own uninstaller:
Start > Control Panel > Programs > Uninstall a program

Then select the program you want to uninstall from the list, an "Uninstall" button will appear at the top. (Sometimes this says Uninstall/Repair)

If you are unsure what something is or if you should uninstall it, feel free to make a list and post it here and we'll give you advice on it.

Solve : How to extend out the vista start menu like in xp??

Answer»

What I mean by extend out is when clicking on the "all program" botton, a new menu should appear on the right, then when clicking on "Accessories", another menu WOULD appear on the more right.

The menus should keep extending to the right.

The PIC below is the start menu i have right now, it's folders...

It's not done in Vista unfortunately. Everything extends down rather than right. Click a PROGRAMME and you will see a drop down box within programmes. I personally prefer it this way, more aesthetically pleasing.

It is very inconvenient to me because everytime i have to scroll down to find "Accesories". Solve : Programs no longer work after re-booting?

Answer»
I have googled this and found no exact results, please help!!

Everytime I install a program whether a poker download from online (PKR) to a kids learning app I install it and use it, but when i restart or re-boot the computer the next day when i click on the .exe shortcut on the DESKTOP it says path has been changed or moved do you want to remove this shortcut? I also checked it in the start menu and every place possible to launch it and it always says that same THING, like an invisible ghost is uninstalling every program I install after i re-boot. Scanned with AVG and had no viruses, just cookie warnings which are usual. What could this be that is causing this. Also its Vista SP2. NEVER had this happen before until recently.

thanks in advanceCan you start these programs by double-clicking the .exe in the program folders? If so, try dragging one program .exe to the desktop, check to make sure it works, and reboot. What happens?HI.

Okay, did that, my icon's reappeared after reboot and they work, what do I then do with the .exe's that i moved from the program files to the desktop, do i need to move them back or just delete them? I was unsure if i was to copy or to move them so i just dragged like you said and they moved. What causes this problem by the way?Move it back to the program folder. Now right-click on that .exe and drag to the desktop and create shortcut. Reboot. What happens?

And I'm going to be out of pocket until much later, so hopefully someone else will be able to help when you post back. What happens when I do that is when i launch it from the desktop it does work but a whole bunch of files then appear on the desktop, basically all the files that are already in its own program files folder. I still have the problem though, its still doing it to programs that i install and they are gone after a reboot.I'm sorry, I don't understand. Move all the actual .exe files back to their program folders. Pick one and right-click drag it to the desktop and create a shortcut. Reboot. Does that work.Yes it did work, but when i then launch the exe from the desktop i get all the other files that are in the program file folder associated with that exe appear on the desktop. But i can launch it. But the problem is still there. Next time i reboot i get the same problem. no clue why its doing this? The next time you reboot you get WHAT same problem?Sounds like these apps aren't very well written...
What programs ?
Whenever I install a program the next time I reboot the program is no longer launchable from the desktop or start menu.

Its not the programs, because its happening to all of them that I install, they work after I install but when i reboot they are only launchable from their program files folder.

Solve : Windows not loading.?

Answer»

The last time I tried to start my computer, I got a screen with this message:

Quote

Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause.

If Windows files have been damaged or configured incorrectly, Startup Repair can help diagnose and fix the problem. If power was interupted during startup, choose Start Windows Normally.

(Use the arrow key to HIGHLIGHT your choice.)

Launch Startup Repair (recommended)

Start Windows normally.

I had this problem a few months AGO and after sending it for repair, I was told that it was due to corruption. But then, I faced this problem again recently. Does anyone know what really is the cause of this?Is this Vista?
Do you have a Windows installation disc?Ouh..sorry that I did not mention the OS as I thought this section was for Vista only. Yeah my COMP runs on Vista. I don't think I have the installation disc.I'm not sure if Quote
Launch Startup Repair (recommended)
needs the installation disc or not. Did you try the steps given in the error box?

i did. I selected Launch start up repair. then I got this black screen with the words "Windows is LOADING file" with a white bar below it. something like this:

                                      Windows is loading file.......
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------  <--  representing the white bar And? Did windows load? If I remember right, there should have been a screen with OPTIONS afterward.
I'm running XP and my Vista PC is not here so I'm trying to go by memory.
No. The thing is, I left it overnight at that point where it says windows is loading... But the next day, it was still showing the same thing.Well this looks like it's going to be out of my league so hopefully someone more experienced will chime in.
Good luck.
BTW, that error you posted in your first post as 'code' makes this page wider than my screen so I have to keep chasing each line to read everything. You can post it as an image
[img] and it will fit the screen.  ouh, really? I didn't know that as it appears fine in my screen. Nevertheless, I will change it to image. Anyway, thanks for trying to help.

Edit: I tried changing to image but it did not appear, so I change it to a quote instead. Thanks! It fits fine now.
Good luck with your PC.
