Solve : Netbooks Operating Systems?

Answer»

A couple of months a go i bought a Compaq CQ70 it's a very capable machine for what i need but with a 17" screen a little too big!

So i'm THINKING of buying a little netbook, i understand that they're to SMALL to run VISTA but will they run Windows 7. Should i wait till i can buy a netbook pre-loaded with windows 7? Is it that different to xp? I'd appreciate any advice.

Thanks. The Win7 OS has ACTUALLY been built for netbooks along with being a full featured OS for desktop machines...
I think you would be making a solid choice...

Which model are you leaning towards ? ?Thanks Patio, as i usually only use the laptop to entertain me when working away from home i want to keep the budget small!

I was thinking about the ASUS Eee 1005HA which is currently offered with XP. Although i'll look at a few machines yet before i decide.Let me know because there are a few better netbooks out there...

Solve : key on keyboard?

Answer»

My KEYBOARD has a key that has 3 icons on it...one icon above one below and one to the RIGHT. I can press shift for the icon above but how do I access the icon to the right on that key.If you're thinking of the key to the left of 1, the third character can be ACCESSED by holding down Alt Gr (the key to the right of the space bar).  If this is on a laptop, that Alt Gr may be absent.

Solve : YouTube videos just stop.?

Answer»

you tube videos just stop playing? Any ideas? try reinstalling adobe flashDo they stop with a BUFFERING CIRCLE in the middle of the screen? As in they play then the screen freezes and a small circle starts to animate in the centre.

Quote from: glaba on August 11, 2011, 10:03:36 AM

try reinstalling adobe flash

We prefer to research an issue before we jump to 'just re-install'. Actually, installing the LATEST version of Flash is a good IDEA. Quote from: ALLAN on August 11, 2011, 02:01:47 PM
Actually, installing the latest version of Flash is a good idea.

Yeah, definitely unless there is a small buffering icon in the centre of the video... then it's just overkill.

Solve : Microsoft Visual C++ problem?

Answer»

Hi, I'm trying to play Fallout New VEGAS, and when trying to launch it (from Steam), it comes up with a dialogue saying "Performing first time setup... Installing: Microsoft VC Redist Package (step 1 of 1). Then windows installer pops up saying:

"The feature you are trying to use is on a CD-ROM or other REMOVABLE disk that is not available. Insert the 'Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable - x86 9.0.30729.17 disk and CLICK OK.

The same dialogue pops up when trying to repair or uninstall Visual C++ from an installer. I'm running Windows Home Premium 64 bit.

Any ideas what's causing this? I've posted on other forums and haven't received an answer that works yet!

Thanks for reading

Solve : Windows 7 desktop will not connect to Internet but still says it's connected?

Answer»

I have a desktop with windows 7. My xbox 360, playstation 3, and my iPod touch can use the wireless just fine. But 2 weeks ago my computer decided it was not going to connect. When I go into the network settings it says everything is working and that I'm connected. But when I try to launch google chrome it says it crashed and cannot connect. Online games won't connect to servers. I can't even get an update for norton 360. Iv scanned several times and I don't have any viruses. I need this fixed to finish an online class for high school. I'm 2 weeks behind. I'm usually good with computers but I could not get this to work. Plz help me!Forgot to add computer specs.  I'm running the professional version of 7,  4 gigs of ram. I use a 1.5 TB hard drive. it was built from purchased parts from newegg.comPlease download MiniToolBox and run it.

Until Broni comes back, I can see that you're connected to the router & not the modem & therefore not the internet.
Have you setup DNS servers manually?
Is this a cable modem?
You'll have to diagnose the router settings.  Has anyone been fooling with them?

If you're Charter customer those settings seems to be fine.
"Ping" commands indicates that there is indeed no connection.

1. Do you have any errors in Device Manager, especially REGARDING network adapters?
Even if not I'd suggest reinstalling network adapter driver.

2. Try to bypass router and connect computer straight to the modem.

3. Try some basic troubleshooting steps...

Make sure, your computer is set to obtain IP address automatically.
1. Go Start>Settings>Control Panel (Vista/7 users: Start>Control Panel)
2. Double click Network Connections (Vista/7 users: Network and Sharing Center)
3. Vista/7 users - From the list of tasks on the left, click Manage network connections.
4. For a wired network connection, right-click Local Area Connection, and then select Properties.
For a wireless network connection, right-click Wireless Network Connection, and then select Properties.
5. From the General tab (Vista/7 users: Networking tab), click Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), make sure it is checked, and then click Properties
6. Click Obtain an IP Address Automatically, and then click OK.

If that doesn't work...
Turn off computer. Disconnect router, and modem from power source for 1 MINUTE. At the same time disconnect ethernet cable as well.
Reconnect everything.
Restart computer.

If that doesn't work, bypass router, and connect computer straight to the modem.

If that doesn't work...
Go Start>Run (Start search in Vista), type in:
cmd
Click OK (in Vista and 7, while holding CTRL, and SHIFT, press Enter).

In Command Prompt window, type in following commands, and hit Enter after each one:
ipconfig /flushdns
ipconfig /registerdns
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew
net stop "dns client"
net start "dns client"

Restart computer.

If that doesn't work...
Go Start>Run (Start search in Vista and 7), type in:
cmd
Click OK (in Vista, while holding CTRL, and SHIFT, press Enter).

At Command Prompt, type in:
netsh int ip reset reset.log
Hit Enter.
Type in:
netsh winsock reset catalog
Hit Enter.

Restart computer.
Holy $&"!!! It worked! I was so worried. I did everything and nothing worked untill the last thing with the command prompt. The last one worked!!! Thank you so much!!! You guys are awesome!!!You're very welcome

Solve : %%-2140993535 and 0x80630801 in event viewer after crash?

Answer»

hey guys, im having a problem...
im getting automatic restarts and freezes (no blue screen!), when...im not sure when...mostly when im watching something over stream or windows media player, when im leaving the computer alone (downloading something overnight) or when im installing something what is taking long (games).
I guess i have no virus/malware or anything...i had, but i removed them. I thought they were the troublemakers and at first i used avira, spybot and windows firewall...then i switched to eset smart security and now im with bitdefender and windows firewall again...no matches of any virus or maleware so far.
I also have the latest graphicdrivers (http://game.amd.com/us-en/drivers_catalyst.aspx?p=win7/windows-7-64bit), but i didnt download any motherboard or sound drivers, because i red that windows 7 is downloading them automatically (my driverdisk is not working anyway, because it says: not compatible with os).

Sadly i couldnt post a minidumpfile, because I have no idea where my minidump folder is (it should be in C:\Windows\%SystemRoot%\MEMORY.DMP right? i have no %SystemRoot% lol)...advice for finding it would be nice

But at least the event viewer is giving me some information:
there are always three kinds of errors in i a specific order and frequency (i can post the XML-View too if u like)

The Peer Name Resolution Protocol service terminated with the following error:
%%-2140993535
The Peer Networking Grouping service depends on the Peer Name Resolution Protocol service which failed to start because of the following error:
%%-2140993535
The Peer Name Resolution Protocol cloud did not start because the creation of the default identity failed with error code: 0x80630801.

my pc is around a month old and im having the problem since then (build it together on my own).
mostly i use him for playing games, i can play the newest games (battlefield bad COMPANY 2) on highest settings all day long without having an issue, but when it comes down to the things said above its like im having a 10 year old machine

im so hoping you guys can help and understand (im german) me

here are my specs:
OS: Windows 7 Ulitmate
CPU: intel i7 920 2.67ghz (not overclocked)
MB: Asus Rampage II Gene
RAM: DIMM1: OCZ XTC Platinum OCZ3P1600EB2G   2 GB DDR3 i think its 1600mhz but everest says 1333
GC: ATI Radeon 4890 OC edition (already overclocked by the company)
PS: PSU-Number: rs-620-asaa-a1

Here is also a list of programmes that i have installed:
Adobe READER 9.0
Bitdefender AntiVirus 2010
CCleaner
DeamonToolsLite
Everest
Firefox
Fraps
IrfanView
JDownloader
K-Lite Codec Pack 64bit
K-Lite Codec Pack (the normal one, guess its the 32BIT version, both were recommended for a 64bit OS)
OpenOffice 3.2
QIP
Skype
Winrar 64bit

thanks in advancesolved it by myself i think, i had to delete the file idstore.sst

its located in:

C:\Windows\ServiceProfiles\NetworkService\AppData\Roaming

you have to turn on the locate hidden files and folders to get there, just type hidden in Start->Search and you will get the OPTION to turn it onYou rock man! I was having the same problem. I'm a Linux guru but terrible with Windows.

Solve : Livemail?

Answer»

I have W7 and LIVEMAIL. Suddenly, though I can receive email I cannot send it. I have tried Restore point and I have deleted Livemail and RESTORED it but it still won't send. Any ideas gratefully receivedLive MAIL as in the online version or accessed VIA an email client?
I assume you are accessing it via an email client-if so have not configured the SMTP settings properly or your ISP might be BLOCKING port 25.There is one thing that nobody ever thinks about, with either Outlook Express 6, Windows Mail or Windows Live Mail.

That is, that every email folder has to load into RAM memory in order to open.  If a folder gets too large to fit into ram, like the Sent Items folder, a failure to function will occur.
I had one customer who could receive mail but not send mail.  I had set up her email client myself so I knew it was done right and worked perfect when it was set up.
But one day she could not send mail.  Her ISP tech support was no help at all, so she called me.
To make the story shorter, I found that her "Sent Items" folder had never been cleaned out in several years.  It was so large that it could not be loaded into her available RAM.
I emptied that folder and everything was working again.
Now she knows, to empty her sent items folder as well as her Deleted Items folder on a regular schedule.

Also, sometimes an ISP will change things like email ports, without notifying their customers.

First, check with the email provider to make sure all port settings, etc., are set properly.

Good Luck,

Did you just make that up, or do you really believe it?

Solve : AdHoc multiplayer PC to PC ISSUE?

Answer»

Hello, im currently deployed, and my friends and i, are playing warcraft 3 frozen throne and rainbow 6 vegas.
When we set up a ad hoc connection, we are total of 6 players, all of us can connect to the ad hoc, but when we go to local or lan game, and try to find the game or connect, i can't connect to the game or even find the game why is that?

When i connect to the ad hoc, 3/5 times it will connect, and say no internet access but i do have lan acces, but then even when i try to find the game that they created im the only one who cannot see it why is that. we all have the same version of the game.

And also a lot of times i cannot even connect to the ad hoc, i have a bran new Dell laptop, theres no issues with that, but i have no idea how to fix the issue that im currently having.

You could help me out, i would really appreciate that.

Sincerly ThomasThese games are very network picky. Warcraft 3 for example does not reassociate a network connection if the connection breaks and then comes back right away without exiting the game and then restarting the network peer to peer type gaming. These games were intended originally for stable lan cable connections and dial-up where disconnects were infrequent. WIRELESS networks are not as dedicated of a connection as a real PHYSICAL cable and games that require persistant handshaking can have issues with them.

First to try would be disable the RJ-45 ethernet adapter so that the only network option is WIFI adapter. Some games pick the first from the list no matter if a network is available or not, so disabling the RJ45 Network adapter will make the wifi #1 and the games will use that INSTEAD of an idle enabled and unconnected NIC.

Easy fix would be a network switch and some cables to play the games as they were intended to be originally networked.

Or you can change to a different channel than that of other neighboring wifi, so that cross network channel RF doesnt occur and maximizes your wifi connection to not listen to other networks on the same channel that needs to be as dedicated as possible to your game with its tight handshaking requirements. If you have 2 or more wifi networks on the same channel performance degrades as all the wifi devices have to pick their traffic out of the NOISE as well as answer to incoming packet requests etc. This causes latency and spotty persistant network connectivity which can make these games unhappy.

Solve : Windows 7 memory error?

Answer»

I have a user that gets an error when he logs into his system the error reads "Out of memory or system resources. Close some windows or programs and try again."

Now this is the setup he has:  (new system, 7 days old)
·         Intel Core i5-2400 Processor
·         Genuine Microsoft Windows® 7 Professional 64-bit
·         4GB PC3-10600 1333 MHZ DDR3 UDIMM (1 DIMM)
·         Intel® vPro™ technology
·         500GB 8MB cache 7200 RPM SATA II

When looking at the system you see that win 7 Recognizes the 4gb of ram but can only use 3.something of it.
I have no idea what is wrong with it, i have tried everything from re-seating the RAM to running memtests on it. Nothing will* comeback with a failure code or resolution.

Review the settings for that MBoard and adjust accordingly...
I do not think it's a Windows issue...
Is the RAM the proper style for the board and on the approved vendor list ? ?
And if i'm reading right is that 1 stik of 4G RAM ? ?  If so was the OS installed in this condition and how long did you let MemTest run ? ?

Also if you get a chance Post the MBoard info...i don't see that above.I will try and get the BOIS settings for the RAM/Mobo and also I will be looking at the virtual memory WITHIN Win7
I do not have the specs on the mobo.
We bought the lenovo ThinkCenter M91p, for our company deployment, and had Win7 imaged on them before they shipped from China.
So yes the RAM is proper for that mobo.
And yes you are...1 stick of 4gb :P I let the mem test run for a day with no errors

Will keep you updated on the info i find

Have you checked to see if the System Properties? See if windows is managing the memory or if your user played with the settings.

Everest Home...System Info for Windows...and/or Speccy will provide the MBoard details...

Did i mention they are all Free ? ?I have found the issue. Its not the windows system or the hardware at all.
It is an outlook issue. The new systems that are deployed were installed with PST timezone so when we updated them outlook freaked out and tried to update but in the process of updating it ran out of RAM that outlook allocates for itself thus resulting in the "out of memory" error.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/949585 <------------update the 2007 to the current version
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2412273 <----------install and run hotfix

dam you microsoft!!!

Solve : Windows 7 Issues.?

Answer»

I've been handed my mother in laws laptop to fix, as I normally do the small fixes, virus's etc.

This ones completely ruined to my knowledge THOUGH. When booted up it will come up saying about bootmgr not found. So I'm guessing all the system files have been wiped with a format from cmd prompt. (Not by me) This laptop only had 1 drive on it, no recovery drive, and no recovery CD.

It was however a legitimate windows 7 version laptop, so I downloaded an ISO of windows 7 and burnt that to a DVD. Putting in the windows 7 disc and booting it from disc, I can get the windows to load up, select country etc as normal. Then it'll load up to "Setup is starting" Freeze on this part for about 2 - 2.5 hours. And load up the section to select which drive. It'll again freeze for about 2 - 2.5 hours before letting me select the drive. (There are 2 listed there, one called system with 5gb taken up, and the main drive - I don't understand why as whenever I was using this laptop there was only one drive in the computer)   Then when I select the drive, baring in mind it's taken about 5 hours to get this far. It'll go to the installing windows section, say "Copying files 0%.." This was on 0% for 2 hours before I fell asleep last night, woke up 4 hours later to be told:
"Windows Could not format a partition on disk 0. The error occurred while preparing te partition selecte for installation, Error Code 0x80070057"

This was very close to, if not the same error I got when I tried to format the HDD from the part where you select drive in the windows installation.

It also wont let me create a new partition.

Specs are:
Advent Roma 2001
Intel Celeron T3100
3072MB DDR2 RAM
320GB Hdd

As I can't load anything at all in it, apartfrom the windows Disc and Bios, I have no idea of any other specs.

Can anyone help at all? I've tried updating Bios to try and look in there, but can't FIND which one I should be using. Google doesn't seem to like the Advent 2001. Just to add. I've just managed to do the Startup Repair thing in Windows disc repair mode.

This is the result:

"Startup repair can not repair this computer automatically"

Where from?http://msft-dnl.digitalrivercontent.net/msvista/pub/X15-65732/X15-65732.isoDownloaded files such as Windows ISOs that are 2 GB or more can get corrupted if you don't use the right tools. Also corruption can happen at the burn stage, e.g. from cheap disks, too-HIGH burn speed, etc. Posting the link on here is possibly not a good idea! You could have just said "I bought it online" (did you?) In any case your first port of call should be the official pressed Advent recovery disk. If you don't have this (why not?) then ask your MIL for it and if she has lost it then get her to order one.

No charge for the download. You need a product key to use it.

The installation ISO files of Windows 7 are hosted on the server msft-dnl.digitalrivercontent.net owned by Digital River, one of the delivery partners for Windows 7.

All you need is legal the Product key for a Windows 7 Edition that you want to install using these ISO images.

EDIT: The hard drive is failing. But if you try to download a large file (such as a 2 GB plus iso) using http the file can get corrupted or truncated so it is best to use a download manager. A download manager is a computer program dedicated to the task of DOWNLOADING (and sometimes uploading) possibly unrelated stand-alone files from (and sometimes to) the Internet for storage. This is unlike a World Wide Web browser, which is mainly intended to browse web pages, composed of a multitude of smaller files, where error-free moving of files for permanent storage is of secondary importance. (A failed or incomplete web page file rarely ruins the page.)

Could be, but see above re corruption.

Anyhow I still say try the official recovery disk.

Solve : Computer freezing at log off, \Device\Ide\iaStor0 (and other issues)?

Answer»

Hey everyone

I’m currently having issues with my laptop and really hope someone out there may have some insight into how to fix the problem!

The main issue is that my laptop freezes when it is logging off, so that it goes from the shut down screen to a logging off screen but will not move from this screen unless I manually turn the power off. Other times (possibly when I have had the COMPUTER on for a shorter period) the logging off function works normally. I’ve done a google search online and it appears that the problem is quite common, but there's no suggestions about what is likely to be useful for my system

Computer descrption

  • I have a dell inspirion 1545 (just over 1 year old)
Pentium Dual Core CPU, 4GB Ram
193 GB of 283 GB of hard drive memory is unused
    Running Windows 7Hone Premium
I've run virus scans with McAfee and they've come up clean

Additional problems (unsure if these are related to the freezing LOG off problem or not)
  • The computer is also freezing  in internet explorer and microsoft computer  every DAY or so
My computer often displays a “dde error” message when I open adobe pdf file
In the last two days it has also stopped reading any portable memory devices I am trying to use
when I TRY to open some of my music files I get  a “system call failed” error message
when I move files in the folders on my desktop these are not immediately  displayed on the screen. Changes only appear when I hit the refresh button.

I would be sooo grateful suggestions for addressing any of the above, the whole thing has become a bit overwhelming!

Thanks in advance

Hi There my grand kids have been messing with my PC and now when I switch it on it starts to load then stops with the message SZQHP is compressed press Ctrl+Alt+Del but when I do it goes back to the beginning over and over again. can this be fixedWhen do you see that message (after Windows starts to load or before)? And are you sure that's the correct spelling?
Can you boot to safe mode? This is the second weird bootloader spelling we have seen, we had PDWKI just recently.

Have you done or attempted a Linux install on this machine ? ?

Just a coincidence I suspect. A page of randomly generated nonsense words. However the OP may have a virus that renames the bootmanager or NT loader to a randomly chosen nonsense name.

Well, my ADVICE is "Unless you are the techie type, and know what a 'repair install' is, take your PC to a repair shop and get them to preferably repair your Windows installation preserving your files and programs, but failing that, to re-install Windows, and in future, if you value your computer and the files on it, don't allow your grandchildren to play AROUND with it unsupervised. Also bear in mind that the grandchildren may have nothing to do with the problem"

Solve : A big mess! I need help?

Ok, so here is the story.  I have a home build computer less than a year old.  I have been running windows 7 and a nvidia 9600 graphics card.  Today, I decided to upgrade to a radeon HD 6850 card.  I put the card in and went through all the install steps and the graphics were wacky.  After the install i restarted and after the message "windows is starting" i got the black screen of DEATH followed a few secs later by windows attempting to restart, and at the same POINT it went to the black screen.  SO it removed the new card and put the old one back in and attempted to restart, Same thing, Windows is loading then black.

Next I loaded the comp in my car and drove to the geek squad.  After an hour of pokeing around, the "geek" could not figure out what the problem was and wanted me to leave it there for 4-5 DAYS and a big fee for them to "test it further".  Oh! before i left home, I had taken the hard drive out and put it in a working comp and I got the same result, so I had a feeling it might be the drive.  The "geek" suggested I try a new drive and fresh instal of win 7.  That was the cheaper option so i bought a new barracuda 7200rpm 1TB drive (same one i had before), went home and attempted to put win 7 on the new drive with the new graphic card in the comp.  Aside from wacko graphics, win 7 went through the instal process and when i was prompted to name the computer and set a user name and password, I declined it.  When the comp restarted it poped up a password screen.... I had not set one, and now I cant access it.  I EVEN tried reinstalling it AGAIN and AGAIN, it asked for a password when I never put one in.

So as you can see I have a BIG mess, any help or insight would be great!  IM very frustrated  Ok, I guess I stumped yall lol.  So after alot of searching I was able to find out how to unlock the super admin windows 7 auto installs and I got admin that way, so that part is fixed. YAY    NOW...the graphics card instal is still the issue.  When I put the new card in (radeon 6850) and the driver disk it came with, the graphics are absolutly haywire (everything is huge and blurr)  I tell it to install and it all seems to work fine until it asks me to restart.  I do, and it crashes, I get a message saying "catalyst failed to load detection driver". Solve : Dell Vostro1000 fails to boot Vista?

Answer»

I have recently put in a larger HD in my Dell Vostro 1000.  After partitioning the new drive with the same size Dell driver partition,  Vista recovery partition, and larger Vista partition, I made a Ubuntu Linux partition and then several NTFS storage partitions. I then copied the MBR and Dell driver partition to the new drive with dd from Ubuntu live. Next I used Ubuntu's ntfscopy command to copy the the TWO Vista partitions and used ntfsresize to expand the Vista partition to the new size. Then I installed Ubuntu in the Ubuntu partition. It did not recognize the Vista partition and called it a Vista recovery program, so I adjusted the config and then the boot menu comes up correctly but the boot to Vista does nothing but a black screen.  I have a Vista recovery disk but the repair programs have not worked. I have read about BCDEDIT.EXE but don't have enough information to use it. Can someone help me?You cannot simply copy an OS to a HDD and expect it to work....this is by design.
Don't you have a Vista CD ? ?It came installed and partitioned so I could add other OS's.  Dell built the recovery partition in the HD and did not see a reason to provide a CD. That still doesn't change what i posted above...
Travel to the Dell site for info on using the hidden recovery partition....

NOTE using it will wipe all your data and take the machine back to Day One status. Thanks for your time. Dell and MS  make it so difficult to upgrade a simple HD.  If they don't trust their customers why should we trust them? Quote from: jims424 on February 18, 2011, 09:42:17 PM

You're making this way more complicated than it needs to be. You can copy the whole drive with one command. Instead of copying the MBR and and the different partitions separately you can just copy the whole disk with a data dump. I can verify from experience that this works with XP. I've never tried it with vista but it should be the same. I've even done this on raw unformatted drives.

What I would do:
With the new and the old hard drives installed, boot to the Ubuntu CD and fire up gparted from the command line with sudo gparted and delete all of those partitions that you created. There is no need to format or create new partitions. You can do this later, after you've got vista going, if you want to. Remember, you have to click apply before any operations are actually carried out in gparted.

Open terminal again and do sudo fdisk -l. This will show every drive and every partition in the system. The drives will probably be /dev/sda and /dev/sdb if you only have the two hard drives installed. You should be able to tell which drive is which by the capacity and number of partitions. This is important! Pay attention to which one is the old and which is the new. Let's assume that the old hard drive is /dev/sda and the new one /dev/sdb although it may be different in your case. You want to do a data dump from the old hard drive to the new one with sudo dd if=/dev/sda of=/dev/sdb bs=32256. This will copy the entire contents of the old hard drive to the new one.

Notice in the example that the if is the source and the of is the DESTINATION. This is why you need to pay attention to which drive is which with your fdisk info. This will do a data dump of the binary pattern from the old drive to the new drive using the block size that I've specified. The bs=32256 is 63 512 byte sectors on your hard drive, so it will transfer the data 32256 bytes at a time instead of the default dd transfer speed of 512 bytes per transfer. This will speed up the cloning process. dd will not show any output during the transfer but you can be sure that it's working by watching the hard drive activity light on the front of your computer. Once the transfer is done you should see a report of number of transfers.

Now power down and remove the old drive. Power back up and boot to the new hard drive. It might balk the first time you TRY to boot to it because the serial number on the drive is different from the old one. Another cold boot should update the info and have you booting into vista.

The new larger drive will have that much more unallocated space when you look at it in disk management. You can boot back to ubuntu to install on that space or use gparted to extend that space for the vista partition. Hi JJ 3000,  Thanks for the idea of using dd. I am GETTING familiar with it. However, I have researched this on other sites that said they gave up on the bcdedit scheme and reverted to NTLDR to boot Vista. Therefore I think Vista's boot uses some different identifier for the partition to boot. (like Linux can use UUID numbers). This would keep me from booting a new HD until I could find out how to change the identifier in some program such as bcdedit. I have done an upgrade on an XP HD using the method I first wrote and it did go faster than this time with Vista.  I am weighing the options now of trying your method or NTLDR or a clean install of Vista . A clean install would be an all day operation with 200G of photos and editor programs though.  Anyway I do appreciate your input and will look at it.Why dont you simply use the HDD manuf. Free utility to clone the old drive to the new drive ? ?Would you EXPLAIN what "HDD manuf." free utitlity is? I don't recognize it. Is it something that exists only in the recovery mode? I use XP and Linux for my computer but my wife uses Vista to store her photos and do her scrapbooking. It is her laptop that I am upgrading the HD. I said that to explain that I am a beginner in Vista.

Solve : Task Manager Shows 90-95 processes running, I count 32?

Answer»

Hi There.  I am new to this forum, so I hope this is the correct place to post this question.  If not, I apologize.

I have had some recent "ISSUES" with my laptop, some that will definitely belong in other forums on this site, but this is one I think belongs here and couldn't find any other information doing a "search".

As the subject states, if I open up Windows Task Manager, and click on Processes; in the lower left hand corner, it seems to currently go from showing that 94 or 95 (actually, right now it has changed to 91 and I have done nothing different since starting this thread) processes are running while I only count 32 or 33 (it changes as I look at the SCREEN) listed in the window that lists them all.  I do not really understand computers, and have to wonder if these 90+ processes are slowing things down, and would love to know what I can permanently turn off from automatically running to help boost performance.  I am going to "snip" a shot of the Task Manager window showing this so you can see what I mean.  Or at least I am going to try to since there is a button that says "Insert Image".    Now, it says 97 processes are running, just from selecting the "snipping" tool.  See, I really don't know what I am doing.

And now I see that clicking the "insert image" button just puts img in brackets with the cursor blinking in between so I have no idea how to attach the image, sorry.

With all this said, if someone can tell me how to attach the screen shot so that I can be told what can and can't be turned off, I would appreciate it.

Thanks, and have a great holiday weekend..........for those of us in the USA.

If it helps any, my computer is an HP Pavillion dv7-1267cl Laptop running Windows Vista Home Premium 64bit with 4gb Ram, 500gb HDD, and Blu-Ray DVD Player/DVD Burner.

All i can say is you can go bonkers staring at Task Manager and trying to figure out what's what...

2 Things you can do...DLoad and install Process Explorer...gives a much clearer pictuire of what's happening...

And DLoad and install StartupCPL from Mike Lin...use it to get your startup items under control...

NOTE: Do NOT disable anything if you do not know what it does...

THANK you for your time.  I will follow your suggestions with one apparent exception.  I went to the site for StartupCPL and it is not for use with Vista, but he posted how to do it.  Hopefully I will be able to figure it out.

I would never disable something without knowing what it does.  That's why I was hoping I could post the screen shot of what was/is running when I first turn on my computer, but I don't know how to do it.  If I upload the screenshot to my photo hosting sight and insert a link to that photo, maybe that would work.  I may just try it now.  Can't hurt.

OK, I inserted the link and clicked the "preview" button and it worked.  But because it is such a small file size, it appears the image will need to be clicked on, which will TAKE you to my website and you can then actually see what is in the image.

Thanks again.  Have a great weekend. Quote from: patio on September 03, 2010, 10:50:49 AM

This.  #1 reason why not all processes show up in Task Manager, especially in Vista and Windows 7 (or even in XP under a limited user account).

Solve : msinfo32.exe system information incorrect info?

Answer»

Hi,

I am fairly new and in search of some help here on the forums. I have RECENTLY bought a computer from a friend (2nd hand). I ran msinfo32.exe in the run box and it shoot out the system INFORMATION. On there I notice that the MANUFACTURE was incorrect and so it the model number. The desktop is a dell and the model is Inspiron 570 MT. I wanted to change it back to these vales but was unable to.

I tried using regedit searching under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\HARDWARE\DESCRIPTION\system\BIOS to change data under the name Base Board Manufacturer, system family, system Manufacture and system product name. I've successfully replaced it with the correct manufacture and product name but as I recheck msinfo32.exe it was still unchanged. I tried RESTARTING it hoping that it would refresh the msinfo32.exe but all it did was restoring all the data that I edited.

Is there a way where I can change it back to the correct information?

Thanks,

Msinfo30

Solve : HP Recovery Disc | Startnet.cmd?

Answer»

HP Media Center Desktop PC M8400F I would give other spec's but I'm almost 100% positive none of them are going to assist in a solution to my problem.

1.) Bought System Recovery disc's from HP...

2.) Backed up all files on external 500 GB Seagate FreeAgent Desktop hard drive

3.) Popped in disc 1 switched boot priorities to boot from CD drive

4.) followed steps...reformatted windows installation partition

5.) let it do it's thing...formatting and reinstalling original files

6.) at end says you should do these things after you get back into windows etc etc update SECURITY stuff etc I click Finish system reboots.

7.) Loads Hp logo etc ...."Windows Loading Files" with white progress bar on bottom...then motion bar "Microsoft Corporation"

8.) Pops up with a background showing a computer with a CD with binary numbers floating around the CD (01010101) with a wand pointed at the middle hole in the CD...title in the background reads "Flex Build 2.0" "HP Restricted"

9.) There is a cmd window that pops up entitled startnet.cmd I researched a bit found out that I THINK it's in the Window's PE MODE (Preinstallation Environment)

10.) loads some text up onto the cmd ...some things it said were...ModeExecution BuildPartition....calling maestro...Searching for USER partition....

11.)After waiting for a couple of seconds...it changes from that to a completely new screen with a grey background http://www.sunyit.edu/images/scp7.jpg it has two folders and the paper transfer animation and that's it...I had to go to work and left it running for my 4 hour shift thinking it will do what it needs to do by the time I get back I get back it's the same screen...so I thought well I'm screwed at this point...nothing would take 4 hours...not to mention the harddrive activity light didn't even show signs of activity just a steady blink blink blink every 2 seconds...

My goal is to get vista back onto this computer and get it working like normal again...the system recovery discs I only ordered to avoid issues with not having the proper drivers for the computer...seeing as these are formatted differently than say a regular ole Vista 32 bit OEM disc...it might not be doing the same things...so my last solution in my opinion would be to buy a normal vista disc and then obtain all the drivers for the system and upload them via jumpdrive...

But so far I'm lost...any help would be greatly appreciated...if any other info is needed just post...and I'll do what i can do get it on here.

ThanksDid you ever get to PART where you insert disk two?Yep yep i've done that part probably about 6-7 times now..put disc one in disc 2 etc...then reboot

Why did you have to reinstall windows in the first place?
I have to reinstall because after I was trying to get rid of some viruses I was trying to fix some anti virus program decided to reboot and it rebooted with windows loading files like i said above and took me to the system recovery screen only this one is the vista one not what comes up with the discs which is specifically the "Recovery Manager" an option within the system recovery dialog box that came up at that time along with several other options this one: http://www.rm.com/_RMVirtual/Media/Images/SystemRecoveryOptions2.jpg...Recovery Manger using recovery discs appearance: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf-JAVA/Doc/images/c00829914.gifHmm...

Are you sure you dont have a recovery partition on your hard drive?
Take the CD out, boot back up, and tap F11 repeatedly as the the computer starts.
What happens?
It takes me to the screen I described in my first post...and Yes I did have a recovery partition...it was titled FACTORY IMAGE in my computer when I had the desktop up and running was like 9 gigs or so...It takes you to this screen?

two folders and the paper transfer animation and that's it...

Are you saying that you tried the recovery partiton first - then ordered the recovery CD after that didn't work?

Could be a problem with your hard drive. Download diagnostic CD
http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=287well I couldn't get any of those options to work before hand (the first image I posted after my topic post) so yes I said lets get recovery discs...Btw how am I going to run that software if i can't boot into windows...How are you posting your messages?Laptop lolDo you know what brand of hard drive you have in your copmuter?
If you dont, you might have to open it up and look. There will be a sticker on your hard drive with the brand and model printed on it.

Download the disk to your laptop. Use a utility like  http://cdburnerxp.se/download
to burn an image onto a physical disk. Then place it in your computer and boot to it.

Could be a problem with your hard drive.

You may use SMART test for hard drive in BIOS.  It will check the hard drive for errors.  By the way you have two hard drives installed on your computer. I suggest you to test each drive with SMART:

1. Start the PC.
2. Press the F10 key on the keyboard to access the Main tab of the BIOS Setup utility.
3. Use the arrow keys to select a recognized hard disk drive device in list and press Enter To help you find the drive name, some common examples of hard drive names are:

    * [MAXTOR 6Y160M0]
    * [SAMSUNG SV8004H]
    * [ST3120026AS]
    * [WDC WD800AB-22CB]

4. Select SMART Support and press Enter .
5. Select - >
SMART Extended Self-Test: Runs an Extended self-test on the hard disk drive. This may take some time. Press Enter .
6. Press Enter to start the test.
7. The test begins and the test status displays.
8. Press Esc when the test is complete.

if the test passed, perform a recovery with a single hard drive connected. Also remove any external hdds, USB devices , printers before the recovery.

Solve : Check Admin - VBS - Win7?

Answer»

Would ANYONE know how to make this work on Windows 7? Running the Script with admin rights doesn't work at least not in my testing. Start CMD in admin mode and then ran the vbs file from that CMD windows and it returns not admin. I'm half thinking it has something to do with this line ... Code: [SELECT]Set objComputer = GetObject("WinNT://" & strComputer & "") But I have no idea how to fix it to work with Windows 7. It does work on XP.

Code: [Select]On Error Resume Next
strTestUser = "TestUser"
strComputer = "."
Set objComputer = GetObject("WinNT://" & strComputer & "")
'Try to create test account
Set objUser = objComputer.Create("user", strTestUser)
objUser.SetPassword "blahblah"
objUser.SetInfo
'WSCRIPT.Echo Err.Number
If Err.Number <> 0 Then
 WScript.Echo "Not an admin"
Else
 WScript.Echo "Is an admin"
 'Cleanup test account
 objComputer.Delete "user", strTestUser
End IfIf you are using a 64-bit version of windows you cannot use CreateObject() or GetObject() to create or acquire instances of COM objects.

I had a very similar problem.

My solution was to use the 32-bit version of wscript or cscript, found in %systemroot%\syswow64\

Solve : Windows 7 Home Something - help:?

Hello, I bought a new computer and got a bargain on Windows 7 Home (supreme?) something LIKE that.

OMG- I can't function!  I can't make a folder and put it on my desktop.

If I put my curser down towards the tray area, the screen goes blank and makes you think you lost
your page.

I'm making a website and I can't even organize my html pages and jpgs into one common folder!

Could anyone direct me where to read or tell me how to re-install my Windows XP version and re-install it
while saving my work I've done the last 4 days on Windows 7

Or can I not re-install Windows XP?

I just want a functioning computer and I don't want to go to college to learn Windows 7!

I was very happy with XP, I want to go back to it even if I've lost money over the deal.

Thanks for any help!   Pennie77 Take it back. Quote from: JJ 3000 on February 10, 2011, 11:39:25 PM

Then you aren't looking very hard.  The obvious place to start is drivers.
So, the whole GUI is harder to get around because of the drivers, oh yeah, i see your point. No wonder some people prefer XP.
Ok, I hear all of  you.  Thanks so much.

But now, please tell me the steps I take to uninstall Windows 7 and then install my XP again?

Is there instructions some where?  Can you point me in the right direction?

When reddevilggg refers to "using" Windows 7 being as easy as "using" Windows 7, he very obviously and very clearly means using the GUI. Windows 7 has an start orb, XP has a start button, they both have Start Menu, Windows Explorer, Internet Explorer, etc. If you can use one you can use the other. In fact many people find Windows 7 easier to use than XP in that way. GUI design has come a long way since 2001.
Belive me,you do not have to be a genius to use W7 which is superior than Xp, as good as XP was. Take note as to what the othesr say. Yiou have a fault in your computer.Tale it back and get them to sort it. You can operate as XP in W7 if you really want to. Quote from: Pennie77

This sounds like Peek, part of the Aero desktop experience, is included in the Home Premium, PROFESSIONAL, Ultimate, and Enterprise editions of Windows 7. If you hover the mouse over the little rectangle on the right hand end of the Taskbar, to the right of the clock, it makes all your open windows temporarily invisible. If you left click it, it is the same as showing the desktop by minimizing all open windows. This is handy if you want to look at any desktop gadgets you might have. When you move the mouse cursor away, the windows come back again. If you don't like it, don't hover the mouse there! Or disable it by right-clicking on the Taskbar and selecting "Properties", and unchecking the option "Use Aero Peek to preview the desktop".

I see nothing in the original post that indicates a faulty computer.  What I do see is a user who is having some trouble getting used to Windows 7.  You've heard of PEBKAC, right? The interface is of course familiar; it has the uncluttered look of Vista but offers the usual enhancements such as desktop clock and calendar. Programs can be launched from the taskbar at the bottom of the screen and anything running can be pinned to the taskbar for future use. This is handy and reduces desktop shortcuts. Likewise, the taskbar for hidden icons has been slightly better, making it easy to see and hide those applications that run in the background. This includes new warning options for security features and one-button access to troubleshooting issues such as Internet and LAN connectivity.
Over all, having spent the last WEEK playing with Windows7, I can say it’s easily worth the upgrade. There are dozens of features I still have to explore.

Solve : Picky USB slots!?

Answer»

A few weeks ago My USB's started to act up. Mainly that every time I PLUGGED in my Ipod it wasn't recognised by the SYSTEM. I also discovered that other USB devices wouldn't work, External hard drive, flash drive cards, phone sync, although my USB printer seemed to CARRY on regardless!
My default fix for software problems is to reformat and reinstall the operating system which I did, only to find the problem still persists!
Can you advise me what to do? or is this more likely to be a hardware problem?

I have a Dell Dimention 4600
Any ERRORS in DEVICE manager? No, all the ports think they are OK.

Solve : WindowsVista fails to start, and an odd login screen.?

Answer»

Greetings.

This morning when I decided to restart my Computer it ran some sort of check/test.(Something about checking a disk for consistency)
Afterwords I was left with a blank screen and a cursor. I waited a bit before growing impatient and restarting it again.(That was probably a mistake.)

This time I was greated with this message:
Quote

Windows Error recovery

Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause

If windows files have been damaged or configured incorrectly, Startup Repair can help dignose and fix the problem. If power was interrupted during startup,  choose start windows normally.
(Use the arrow keys to hilight your choise.)

Launch Startup Reapair (recomended)
Start Windows Normally

Seconds until the highlited choise will be selected automaticaly: xx
Description: xx

Starting windows normally eventually brings me back to the same message.
Launching Startup Repair, as well as trying to enter Safe Mode or trying to revert to a previous configuration, brings me to a login screen where the only thing I can select is an account called "Other User", and my account is missing. When I select "Other User" it asks for a  User name and Password. Mine do not work.

I'm using Windows Vista Home Premium.
Also, I should note that I'm currently using my Playstion 3 to surf the web. Which makes using this website very awkward, and impossible on some pages, so I apologise if a solution to my problem was already available.

edit:
Just realised how little information Is in this post.
Since I can really do anything with my computer at the moment I'll have to go by memory for most things:
I'll try to add stuff as I remember/figure it out.

It is a Desktop. Dell Inspiron .
Last time I installed updated or anything like that was sometime late last year.
Also have not added any hardware.

I run daily virus scans with AVG free 8.5. If something seems weird I also sometimes use Malware Bits.
I did have a rather nasty trojan awhile ago. Messed up my Windows Explorer, but I was pretty sure I had repaired that.Just using guest as a username gets me a Welcome screen, and it looks like it is loading, eventually it takes to the "The specified domain either does not exist or could not be contacted." message that I get when I try anything else.Ok, I've managed to trade one probalem for another.
I booted up my Windows Vista installation disk to see if it could help.
Used the repair option.

Now instead of getting the previous message I get a Blue Screen of Death. Trying to boot in safe mode just gets me a black screen with a cursor.

The STOP code was:
Quote
0x0000001e (0xFFFFFFFFC0000005, 0xFFFFFA8005C7ACE0, 0x0000000000000000, 0(?)0000000000023000)

The (?) is there because that's when the code started wraping around, and a portion of the left half of the screen was being cut off.
Seems like it was only one character for each line, so it is probably just missing the "x".

I am going to try and investigate this myself. I just thought it was a good idea to come here and update my situation.STOP: 0x0000001E or KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED may be related to insufficient hard drive space.
Do you remember, if it may be the issue? Quote from: Broni on January 28, 2011, 08:29:44 PM

Possibly, but I doubt it. I'm not the kind of guy that has hundreds of songs on his computer or anything like that.
Hopefully that is the problem. As it would mean my stuff wasn't wiped.

Anyway to check without windows?Let's see, if we can look at your computer booting from an external source.

Please download OTLPE  (filesize 120,9 MB)

  • When downloaded double click on OTLPENet.exe and make sure there is a blank CD in your CD drive. This will automatically create a bootable CD.
  • Reboot your system using the boot CD you just created.
    • Note : If you do not know how to set your computer to boot from CD follow the steps HERE
  • Your system should now display a REATOGO-X-PE desktop.
  • Depending on your type of internet connection, you should be able to get online as well so you can access this topic more easily.
  • Double-click on the OTLPE icon.
  • When asked Do you wish to load the remote registry, select Yes
  • When asked Do you wish to load remote user profile(s) for scanning, select Yes
  • Ensure the box Automatically Load All Remaining Users" is checked and press OK
  • OTL should now start.
  • Press Run Scan to start the scan.
  • When finished, the file will be saved in drive C:\OTL.txt
  • Copy this file to your USB drive if you do not have internet connection on this system
  • Please post the contents of the OTL.txt file in your reply.
So FAR my attempts  to access another computer have been futile, but it looks like I'll have another chance this friday.Ok, I have another computer to work with, but my rewritable CDs are not being recognised.
They're labeled "Memorex CD-RW 4x 700MB 80 min".

Going to try again.

edit: It is being recognised now, but everytime I try to burn it I get "Failed to send CUE Sheet!  Reason: Illegal Mode For This Track"

Am I using the wrong kind of disk or something? It has to be CDR, not CDRW.Ok, I've got the REATOGO-X-PE thing working, but when I double-click the OTLPE icon it prompts me to choose a directory. Nothing about remote registries.

And when I choose my C: Drive I get the message "Target is not windows 2000 or later". Which is odd because I'm 100% sure I was using Vista. Don't know how I could be mistaken about that.

At least I can see my stuff is still there. At least is appears to be at first glance. Quote

Select a folder, where Windows is actually installed.
In most cases, that would be C:\WindowsThis situation has made me a bit paranoid/extra careful don't really want to do too much when I'm not sure what exactly it is I'm doing.

Anyway, here is the scan results:

Open Notepad and paste it.
Save the document as Fix.txt on to a USB flash drive

On the infected computer the following...

Run OTLPE

  • Insert USB stick and find the file Fix.txt. Drag the file Fix.txt and drop it under the Custom Scans/Fixes box at the bottom.

    • (The content of Fix.txt should appear in the box)
  • Then click the Run Fix button at the top
  • Let the program run unhindered, reboot the PC when it is done

OTLPE by OldTimer - Version 3.1.44.3 log created on 02072011_130920
I've seen that whitesmoke thing before. I thought I had taken care of it before. Guess not. Please download NTBR by noahdfear and save it to your Desktop.
File size: 2.44 MB (2,565,432 bytes)

  • Place a blank CD in your CD drive.
  • Double click on NTBR_CD.exe file and a folder of the same name will appear.
  • Open the folder and double click on  BurnItCD.cmd file. If your CD drive will open, simply close it back.
  • Follow the prompts to burn the CD.
  • Now you will need to set the CD-Rom as first boot device if it isn't already (if you don't know how to do it, see HERE)
  • If you have any questions about this step, ask before you proceed. If you enter the BIOS and are unsure if you have carried out the step correctly, there should be an option to exit without keeping changes, so you won't do any harm.
  • Insert the newly created CD into your infected PC and reboot your computer.
  • Once you have rebooted please press Enter when prompted to continue booting from CD - you have a whole 15 seconds to do this!
  • Read the warning and then continue as prompted.
  • You first need to select your keyboard layout - press Enter for English.
  • Next you want to select the appropriate tool. Enter 1 to choose 1. MBRWORK
  • On the following screen enter 5 to select Install Standard MBR code.
  • Enter 1 to overwrite the infected MBR Code with the Standard MBR code.
  • When asked to confirm please do so.
  • Afterwards, please enter E to leave MBRWORK, then 6 to leave the bootable CD.
  • Eject the disc and then press ctrl+alt+del to reboot the PC.
Attempt to boot normally.

**Important note to Dell users - fixing the MBR may prevent access to the Dell Restore Utility, which allows you to press a key on startup and revert your computer to a factory delivered state. If this is Dell computer, let me know before proceeding.

Solve : My battery keeps dying even after I've replaced it?

Answer»

I have a Dell Studio 1555 and it's only about a year and a half old. A few months ago a red X showed up on the battery symbol in the BOTTOM CORNER of the screen and a pop up said I should replace my battery. It lasted about 20 minutes without being plugged in. So I got a new battery in January, which only lasted one hour without being charged and it died again last week. Why do my batteries keep dying? Is there a way to FIX this? Thanks!!!
I know it not a fix, but as you can see from the link, a few people are not happy with this battery, you may be one of the 'unlucky' ones!

http://reviews.dell.com/2341/312-0702/dell-dell-85-whr-9-cell-lithium-ion-battery-for-for-studio-15-1537-1555-laptops-reviews/reviews.htm
I  looked at two sites about your laptop.  One that sells it claimed up to 8 hours of battery life.  Another was PC mag, which reviewed it, and which is usually accurate and one of the advantages they listed was long battery life.

When the laptop was new how long did the battery last?

Can you borrow a charger from someone else and try it?  Since you got a new battery and it only lasts a short time, my first GUESS is that there is a PROBLEM with the charger.

Solve : Get black screen after Vista boots up?

Answer»

Hi everyone,

I INSTALLED Excel 2003. Later that day, I turned the PC on. Vista loaded but then a blank black screen appeared. I was able to log in via Safe Mode. I tried Last know Good Config. I couldn't do a System Restore since this hadn't WORKING for months. I did a factory restore. After the restore, the screen said Windows is preparing for first use or something similar. Then a blank black screen appeared. I could not boot via Safe Mode. I cant boot via Safe Mode with Command Prompt. I booted via Bootlog. The last file that loaded before the black screen was crcdisk.sys. I renamed and then deleted this file and some other files(pcmcia.sys, 1394bus.sys). This didn't fix the problem either. And now when I boot via Bootlog, I just get a blank black screen.

I have tried booting any way that I can but nothing has worked. I ran the startup up tool and it runs for like 3 seconds. Ran memory diagnostics. CHECKED my memory. I ran an extended test on my hd and it failed. Mentioned something about 7. I dont have a backup. I don't have a Vista CD. And I don't WANT to buy a new hard drive unless I have to. Please help. Solve : Compaq Laptop - Made forced shutdown with programmes running, running badly.?

Answer»

Hi,

Thanks in advance for any HELP you can suggest.

I have a HP Compaq laptop using Windows vista 'basic' OS.

The battery pack always has to plugged into the mains otherwise the laptop will run out of battery and turn itself off (not the main problem i need solving).

I had a few programmes running and wasn't aware that the power adaptor had slipped out and the laptop RAN out of battery and shutdown automatically ( not through the PROPER procedure).

Ever since this happened the laptop has been running poorly.

For 1, whenever User Account Control pops up for a programme and I press continue, the screen freezes (in the shaded mode) and I have to exit through ctrl, alt, del.

Secondly the laptop seems to be taking alot longer to boot up than before the forced shutdown.

I have ran full virus scans, and it says everything is fine.

No doubt this has happened to someone and you could help me!

Thanks alot

MattLet's start with the HD: To check the hard drive right-click on a command prompt icon and open as administrator. In the command prompt window type:chkdsk /r  (then press ENTER). You'll be told the disk is in use and ASKED if you want to run checkdisk on the next boot. Say yes, exit the command prompt window, and reboot.Hi Allan,

I,m not sure how or why but after running the disk check, the computer is running alot better!

the start up is running alot quicker and UAC is working.

Just out of interest how/why would this have helped?

Thank you very much!Anomalous shut downs can cause lost clusters and other hd errors. Often these very minor in nature and the user is not effected, but sometimes they can cause problems. Running checkisk with the repair option generally fixes the problems. That makes sense.

Thanks again

MattJust had the same experience on my vaio. Thanks for the clarification!

==================================================The above reports are only for the recent dump files that are specific to my problem. I also have several dozen more, some as old as March of this year. I chose not to post those. It's not that conclusive...

Download, and install SpeedFan: http://www.almico.com/sfdownload.php
Post your computer TEMPERATURES:

Provide processor info (hold Windows logo key, and hit Pause/Break key to find out).Processor: AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 6000+ 3.00 GHz

Current Temps:

GPU: 51C
Temp1: 49C
Temp2: 43C
Temp3: -8C
CPU: -64C
Internal Temp: 46C
Remote Temp: -64C
Core: 46C

When I run the TV tuner to watch tv i get a core of 70C, GPU goes up to 55, temps 1, 2, and 3 go up to 77C 44C and 68C respectively.

However, I honestly don't believe it's the temperature because my computer gets a sh!t load hotter when I play games, and I dont get the BSOD when that happens (except for a couple games). I think the 1x00000101 error is a CPU timing problem.Yeah, go ahead and melt your CPU (if you didn't cause some damage already).
Your CPU max temp is listed at 62C!

Those BSODs come either form overheating, or from already damaged processor.Broni:

had the same error code and found this forum by google search.
You saved me from buying a new cpu. The cooler was stuck by a cable.

Thanks a lot! Core meltdown prevented - at least in my case -I'm glad to help

Solve : DVD to ipod touch FREE CONVERTER??

Answer» HI guys,

I have a PC (windows 7) and an ipod TOUCH (a 3RD and brand new 4th Generation)

I want to know if anyone knows if there is a FREE DVD to itouch converter out there that I can download?

I have DVD movies that I want to put on my ipod. I do not want to have to pay for movies I ALREADY own.

I am NOT technical so the easiest FREE program is prefered. I only want to get my movies on the touch, nothing more complicated than that.

THANKS SO MUCH!!

"Mom"http://www.google.com/search?hl=&q=free+dvd+to+ipod+converter&sourceid=navclient-ff&rlz=1B3GGLL_en-GB___US394&ie=UTF-8&aq=0&oq=free+dvd+to+ip I googled it also before asking here. Does anyone which is the easiest to use?

Has anyone had any success with it?I tried a software (E-Z Soft) and it said Free. It then says, after you download it, that there is a FULL VERSION which costs money. What is the difference?

I don't see any instructions for it so I downloaded and have no clue as to what to do. Ahhhhhhhhh!  Help!! Try TVC --> http://download.cnet.com/Total-Video-Converter/3000-2194_4-10429299.html
* Its only a trial version but it is easy to use. You have to pay for the full version after. Once installed, then open TVC and just drag the dvd format file to the tracklist(big, blue SQUARE area)and choose the mobile or ipod conversion. I've been using this for almost 4 years now(full version) on an xp system but have'nt tried on win 7.

Solve : System Image issue with Win 7?

Answer»

Trying to create a system image for my new Windows 7 build and what makes no sense is that it wants to format my DVD-R disc before writing to it. If it were a DVD-RW disc, it would make sense, but my DVD-R's are a 1 time burn type disc. At the END of burning the first disc I get the folloing error complaining about  the media as SHOWN in this screenshot. Do you really need DVD-RW's to create an image using the built in System Image utility???

What stinks also is that my Ghost 2003 can not image this Windows 7 system as well, and I refuse to buy $$$$Enterprise$$$$$ Symantec Ghost to have all the features that 2003 has. Was hoping the built in system image utility of Win 7 would be the free solution....

[recovering disk space - old attachment deleted by admin]It could just be a problem with the disks.

Have you tried Macrium Reflect? A quick Google search using the words of that error message revealed that many people have had trouble using Windows 7 image backup feature with DVD disks. The "formatting" message can be ignored, but the crapping out part way through a disk seems to be quite common. Especially with some hardware (Dell got mentioned). Some have suggested the problem may be that the burn is done too fast for many disk brand/burner combinations. I use image backup once a week with each of 2 USB external HDDS alternately.
Well update to this is that I ENDED up putting an old external USB 80GB HD to good use and was ABLE to create an image to that drive. At the end of this it gave option to create a bootable DVD disc that can be used with the external drive now and the 11GB image to build the system back from.

My hardware is 2003 model Compaq Presario computer tower case with brand new Biostar motherboard with Athlon II X2 2.5Ghz, 4GB Ram, 550 Watt PSU, 500GB SATA HD, and the burner is a SATA LG Brand 16X DVD-RW Burner. (Skimped on the case for my new computer build, but all guts including PSU are new) * The original single core AMD Athlon XP 2800+ (2.08Ghz) just wasnt fast enough anymore for my needs and was retired after almost 8 good years of operation.

We can all read. It's just that you firstly didn't take the trouble to write your question in normal English. You chose to write one very (very!) long, tiring to read sentence. SECONDLY when gently pulled up about that, you come back with a snarky response. Because of these things, many people will decide not to take the trouble to answer. We're not PAID on here, it's all voluntary. In fact it is very easy to find an HP web page detailing the recovery process. I did it in a Google search that took me about 30 seconds.

Solve : e mail help?

Answer»

I have win 7. and was going to get
windows Live mail

Because win 7. does not have OUTLOOK express.

But I have  VERIZON for my internet and e mail account.

I keep seeing things on YouTube about you need a  Win iD  or  Hotmail or Gmail  to use win Live mail.

I don't want to have to get onee more e mail account.

Can I just use window Live without getting a win live iD or Hotmail or Gmail or  MsN mail account?

And just use it with my Verizon account?Yes, you can use WLM with any POP-enabled email account.  You do not need to use a Hotmail or Gmail or MSN account.  I believe you do not need to get a Live ID, but I'm not absolutely sure about that, since it's been awhile since I INSTALLED WLM.  I suggest downloading and installed WLM and see WHETHER you are prodded, during the installation, to enter or create a Win Live ID.  I think it will not be REQUIRED but, again, I'm not absolutely sure about this. Thank you.

I did try  Thunderbird  and did not like it.
I will try  windows Live mail next.

But do you know of another e mail cient prgram that may be good? Why did you not like Thunderbird ? ? Quote from: nymph4 on January 28, 2011, 01:18:34 PM

Well, I guess you could try Incredimail.  I've never used it, so I can't make any comments on it.  See http://www.incredimail.com/english/splash.aspx.  But, I'd think Thunderbird or WLM should be quite adequate.

Solve : SASNATIVE64 MISSING?

Answer»

Having found a thread titled "Re: Advanced System OPTIMIZER 3 - Sasnative64  (problem solved)" I NOTE that reply but I do not have Advanced System Optimiser, nor any other Optimiser. The nearest thing I have is Diskeeper 2010, but as far as my imperfect memory recalls, I had no problem with this boot up error message (Subject Heading) until QUITE some time after Diskeeper was installed.

So far, I just ignore the message but WONDER whether something may come back and bite me on the bum

I had no problem with this boot up error message (Subject Heading) until quite some time after Diskeeper was installed.

I suggest you review your antivirus protection, do a MALWARE scan, and consider starting a thread in the malware section of this site.

Solve : Issues with installers and downloads.?

Answer»

Here's my problem I'm having.

I move my internet modem back and FORTH between my computer and my xbox 360, depending on where internet is needed at that point it time.
(I'm poor-ish and cannot afford another ethernet cable or a wireless adapter at the moment)

For a PERIOD of about two weeks, I had just left it in the living ROOM plugged into the xbox. Finally, last night, I decided to skype with a friend of mine. So I moved the modem back in. Once it hooked up and showed a valid internet connection, I opened my default browser (Google Chrome) to facebook for a bit while talking to her.  Immediately, I noticed some issues with my browser. Some pages were only partially loading, or fully loading but giving some gibberish as if it was still partially undecoded. Also, things that normally use Flash 10.1 on my computer to launch (i.e. Youtube, some things on FBOOK, and the like) Were not launching. Almost as if the computer could not detect Adobe Flash on the DRIVE at all. So, I uninstalled it with the intent of reinstalling to fix the problem. When attempting to download it again, I ran into my biggest problem yet. Files will not download from any browser (Chrome, IE, or Firefox) and those very few that do, when the installer begins, gives some kind of registry or exception or validation error and closes down. I completely wiped the partition and reinstalled Windows 7, to no avail.

Ideas? Suggestions?

Solve : The newest update of Divx causes IE to not respond.?

Answer»

I  usually go to VeeHD to watch movies.  Last week sometime one of the movies would not buffer at all and I noticed that there was a newer version of Divx.  So,  I followed the steps and clicked my way through to installing the Divx plus version (I think that's the version as there are so many different things with Divx like web player, regular player, and DivX Plus Converter, DivX Plus Codec Pack, DivX Plus Web Player
).  After installing and going to a movie site the player will load and I'll get the message buffering but I cannot PRESS the play button.  Then, eventually I get IE is not responding.  I tried removing all of the Divx programs from my program list and reinstalling an OLDER version from http://www.oldversion.com/download_DivX_6.8.4.html, but getting the same problem.  And now, again I'm trying to reinstall the plus version and the setup box that appears when you are installing the program freezes and I have to do TASK manager to close out the program.  I don't know how many versions of this program are on my computer and I don't know what to do.  This is the website I usually goto to watch movies.

http://veehd.com/video/3430838_GONE-BABY-GONE-2007.

Now I just get the buffering and it doesn't freeze or not respond right away, I usually flip between TABS and then it freezes.

Help.  I have Visita with all the latest UPDATES.  If you'll help and need more info - I'll try to provide it.

2. You might want to try reinstalling the PROGRAM you use to open PDF files.

Hopefully that gets you somewhere, if not ask again

The real problem seems to be that you may not have any PDF reader installed, not that you can't download a PDF.  Do you have a PDF reader, e.g. Adobe Reader or Foxit Reader, installed?Seems like you are using Mozilla firefox:

From Firefox Support KB:

The "associated helper application does not exist" message can mean the application the Mozilla program thinks should open a SPECIFIC type of file is no longer installed [1]. It can also mean that the application has either been updated or reinstalled and is now in a different location. [2] In such cases, the Mozilla program cannot FIND the application for that file type in the expected location and will issue the error.

<- Not for a PDF file.

As everyone said, reinstall your PDF application and see how it goes

If you already have PDF readers installed, then this link may help you.. (If it is firefox)

Solve : Disk Space randomly going down.?

Answer»

I don't know why, but my computer lowered it's space from 20.1 GB free to 15.1 free in 2 days. I didn't download anything at all, just let my friend play a FPS on my computer (already installed and no patches came out that day) called A.V.A. by Ijji. I know it's a safe game without viruses, so I know it's not the problem. I recently ran defraggler, about 2 weeks ago and it cleared 10 gb off my hard drive, so I was like "alright!" I then installed A.V.A. and ended with with I think about 22 GB free. I ran defraggler again to hopefully get even more space, but it ended up ACTUALLY TAKING up space. After that my hard disk space has randomly gone down.

Additional Details
I have Windows Vista Home Premium and my Malwarebytes said nothing was found and I stopped Nod32 halfway since nothing showed up too and I was tired of waiting.

My computer space after virus scanning is 14.9 GB. It just went down some more.

I system restored my computer to 11/30 and it went to 14.2 GB, then uninstalled a few things to make it 14.8 GB. Now it just randomly dropped to 14.5 GB. What's happening?

Update #1
My space has now gone down to 12.8 GB. What's happening??robles56,
You should already know that we need more information.
What make of PC do you have.
Which OS do you have.
Name all AV software you are using.
Is your PC always on-line?
Are you using lime wire or other P2P?
What is the size of your disk drive?
Why not GIT a BIGGER Drive? No, that is not a joke. Having only 12 GB spare is small  by current standards. Except for a net book.
I suspect below said could be the issue
*******************************

ISSUE : Hard Disk space is getting reduced on a daily basis in Windows Vista

CAUSE: The disk space is used by the System Restore points to store the data.

RESOLUTION:

Disable the System Restore temporarily to get the lost Hard disk space back. On doing that, the System Restore points already created will be lost. To prevent this from happening again, reduce the size of disk space used by the System Restore points. To do that, type the following command at the command prompt:

vssadmin Resize ShadowStorage /For=C: /On=C: /Maxsize=3GB

In the above command, 3GB refers to the size used by the Restore point. We can change it accordingly.

In the above command, 3GB refers to the size used by the Restore point. We can change it accordingly. If all goes well you should see a message saying 'Successfully resized the shadow copy storage association". Your System Restore shadow storage has now been resized. This will solve the issue for sure.

I checked that i have used up (checking all my c: files, and added them up) comes up as 50.25 GB used up (my own calculations, clicking on properties on every

Please disable the System Restore temporarily to get the lost Hard disk space back. On doing that, the System Restore points already created will be lost. To prevent this from happening again, reduce the size of disk space used by the System Restore points. To do that, type the following command at the command prompt:

1. Click Start
2. From the Start menu Click All programs followed by Accessories
3. On the Accessories menu Right Click on the Command Prompt option
4. From the drop Down menu that appears, click the Run as administrator option
5. When the Command Prompt window opens type
vssadmin Resize ShadowStorage /For=C: /On=C: /Maxsize=3GB

In the above command, 3GB refers to the size used by the Restore point. We can change it accordingly. If all goes well you should see a message saying 'Successfully resized the shadow copy storage association". Your System Restore shadow storage has now been resized. This will solve the issue for sure.

I ran defraggler earlier and I think it deleted my restore points for me, but not sure, because I got 10 gb freed after DEFRAGGING.  When I tried system restoring before, I only had 3 restore points. Also, my memory is going down randomly up and down, without shutting down or anything.1) Defragging does not delete restore points
2) If you want to see what is using disk space download and run treesize (http://www.jam-software.com/freeware/)Ok... Something interesting happened. After I did what the above guy said about shadow thing, my free disk space went back up to 22 GB.
If it stays like this, I'll be happy. I hope the whole thing was a glitch or something! For now, please give answers until I confirm it has stayed at 22 GB.Nothing interesting at all. That command reduces the space allotted to System restore. When you ran the command you deleted old restore points.

Do as I said and download and run treesize if you want to see where the space is being used.
