Solve : "Do Not Have Permission" To Write? |
Answer» A Vista USER, I receive a message that I "do not have permission" to write files to a folder. It is a temp folder. I am the administrator of the computer -- I sign in with a password, etc. -- and I am the only user of the computer. Yet I do not see where I can "give myself" the needed permission. I will not BOTHER asking why the administrator would NEED permission, nor why I would need ANYONE's permission to use my own computer. Anyone have an idea on how I can rid myself of this NONSENSE (other than buying a Mac)? Thanks in advance. In Vista, real administrator folder is hidden, so it won't get messed up by a user. |

Answer» Can't remember that now. Will be? That question means nothing. Please ask it more clearly. I still wanna know what "scratches" we are talkin about here...Sorry I meant "from scratch." English is my SECOND language, that's why this blunder. Thank you for the link Computer_Commando There's a fragment from there: Quote Windows UPDATES will NEED to be checked and reinstalled again.Seems like Windows will be updated from scratch (in case when Win7 INSTALLATION disc doesn't have SP1). Solve : works 4.0 to works 9.0? |
Answer» I have a old computer with Windows 95 and Works 4.0. I need to COPY the files in Works 4.0 to a NEW computer with Vista and Works 9.0. I have copied the files and put them on the new computer, but it will not open the files. What do I need to to open them? These files are Works word processor. Is the file name extension for Works 4.0 .wps? When you have Works 9.0 open and try to open one of the old files from the File, Open, menu on Works 9.0, can you select one of the old files for OPENING? What happens if you try to open one?Yes, they are work wps files. When I try to open any file I get a message that SAYS can't open because file is not compatable or corrupted. Do you still have your old computer with Windows 95 and Works 4.0? If so, try saving a file a DIFFERENT format, such as RTF; the file name extension would be .rtf. Then, copy it to your new computer and try to open it in Works 9.0.I do still have the old computer and I will try it . The computers are at work and I will try it in the morning, thanks I'll let you know. |

Solve : Messed up of a few system file icons!? |
Answer» I can't believe myself. I've had done two major bonehead mistakes in one week! And I thought I was getting the hang of all of this! It currently looks like a blank white piece of paper that has the tip folded back on the top right and on the page are two blue gears, one large and one small. This is exactly how system file icon looks like, so you're fine. Quote And if you click on properties of a .ini file it says "Opens with Notepad".This is fine, too. By default, they're not associated with Notepad, but since .ini file is simply a text file, many people, including myself, associate .ini files with Notepad. You're fine |

Solve : Blank screen towards the end of windows 7 reinstall? |
Answer» My brother's Samsung laptop (sorry, don't know the name, cannot find out) has had a windows update, causing the computer to be extremely slow after booting. He found the OS disc that came with the laptop and I popped it in and had it reinstall the OS, but keep the drives and such. Windows 7 almost finished INSTALLING, but it has to reboot and do some sort of SETUP. When booted in normal mode, the screen is blank (No video being sent), and in safe mode, video is there, but I am prompted with the message to reinstall, as windows cannot be installed in safe-mode. I have no access to my desktop or anything. If there is a fix other than wiping the laptop clean, please reply. Thanks in advance. Why didn't you just uninstall the update? |

Answer» Hi I am having a couple of PROBLEMS with my LAPTOP. I noticed that on my start menu all the lettering is faded to where they are virtually unreadable. One more thing the COMPUTER is over 10 years old and every once and a while it won't boot up, gets half way through on the cmos and hangs there. Might take several times of shutting off the computer before it gets past the center hang or the progress bar. My operation system is WINDOW 7 ultimate and have an Toshiba satellite. . Might take several times of shutting off the computer before it gets past the center hang up. It does not affect anything else other than the start menu, that is all other functions are just fine. I can reboot and the problem goes away but it fades in time............need help ...............two-dogs |

Solve : I Have Another Problem with my computer? |
Answer» alright this is my last time using my old computer. it is a HP Pavillion 513n running WINDOWS XP SP3. it did have a verry verry VERRY bad virus problem but i was using it perfectally before it shut down. here is the story of what happened. i just got a new laptop and i wanted to transfer my music and other crap from my old one to my new one. it always acts wierd i dont have time to explain what i mean by that. but i was starting to transfer files when i noticed that i needed my keyboard, so as i stood up to plug it in i tripped over the power cable and accidentally unplugged it from the wall. i did not have the keyboard plugged in cause my computer wont startup with one plugged in. but now it wont startup at all. i try to turn it on and it boots to the page that says boot in safe mode, boot normally etc. i have selected every option and it starts to load up and then just restarts itself. i disabled auto restart and it came to a blue page that says "a problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer." how much do they cost? where can i buy one, can i get it at a store like Circuit city? and are there any other ways? I use one from CompUSA .... they have a website - I think it was around $35. It is IMO a useful thing to have anyways. Main think to be sure of is that any enclosure has a connection to suit - either ATA or SATA. Haven't looked in Circuit City but there's a good chance they may have this in some form.when i click on start in safemode it somewhat starts to prepare for safemode then it restarts.will it start to a command line? Quote how much do they cost?I just searched the web find this http://search.ebay.com/hard-disk-box_W0QQ_trksidZm37Q2el1313QQfromZR40(this is on eBay) In my place it's about 100RMB(currency of China) I have no idea about Circuit city btw , you system must be damaged already. you system is xp with SP3 ,I think you don't have or borrow the cd of xp with sp3. so that you can't use the install cd's repair function to repair your system. You can only install a whole new system on that hard disk,if you want to install system. do remeber this please the command line is a good idea ,but be careful of all you operates it wont start up at all then try plan A |

Solve : Problem Event Name:CLR20r3? |
Answer» I've had this Toshiba Satellite for about 6 months. It runs Windows Vista. About a month after I got it, it started to act narcoleptic, falling asleep and not waking up unless I hard reset it. I'm sure this has caused all sorts of havoc, and I've taken it in to Geek Squad twice for that, but they are still scratching their HEADS. That's some of it. About a month ago, I bought Business Plan Pro and have been toiling away at the PERFECT business plan. The computer fell asleep in the middle of this and the program wouldn't work. I uninstalled, reinstalled (realized I lost the serial numbers), bought a new version of the software, same thing. installed the repair, ETC, etc. I took it in to Geek Squad (I have a Best Buy card, otherwise I wouldn't have) and after $130, 3 different techs messing with my settings (and losing my research on that business plan in the process), they gave it back to me without fixing the problem. They UPDATED my .NET, they cleaned the hard drive. The only thing they said I can do now is reformat the hard drive. Since I don't have the rest of my life to do that, or $130 to have them do it, I'm hoping that there is another option. This is what the thing says: |

Solve : Shut down not working on new laptop? |
Answer» I have a new MSI notebook with windows Vista. When using the shutdown option I find the computer only goes into sleep mode and never shuts down properly thus slowly draining the battery. How do I get the shut down to actually shut down?Click here to find out what information I should add when submitting a question? When shutting down the computer...make sure it shuts down completely before closing it. Vista now recommends that people use sleep mode instead of shutdown on a daily basisSource, please.Hi. Thanks. I have tried to adjust the options through advanced settings but this has made no difference. Apparently Vista shuts down after a certain amount of time in sleep mode. This doesnt happen either, it just stays in sleep mode. I have also used the shut down option in the arrowhead icon and that too enters sleep modeWindows Vista Help: Turn off a computer: frequently asked questions Quote from: Broni on August 18, 2008, 05:51:03 PM QuoteI'll second this one...Vista now recommends that people use sleep mode instead of shutdown on a daily basisSource, please. Broni & Patio: My comment refers to information in Vista Help and Support, under the topics “Turn off a computer: frequently asked questions” and “Turning off your computer properly”. [Ref: Saviour, reply #6] Perhaps I should have said that Vista ‘suggests’ rather than ‘recommends’ the use of sleep mode. In any case, These Help topics and others contain USEFUL information about the different power states available. The quotes below are from the FAQs. “If I'm not planning to use my computer for several hours, should I turn it off? No. You should put your computer to sleep, either by clicking the Power button on the Start menu or by pressing the sleep button on your keyboard or mobile PC. If you have a mobile PC, closing the lid can also put the computer to sleep. When you're ready to use your computer again, it will wake quickly so that you can resume working where you left off.” “Won't sleep eventually drain my mobile PC battery? No. When your mobile PC is running on battery power, the battery drains slightly as the computer sleeps, but it uses an extremely small amount of power. After your computer sleeps for an extended period of time, Windows saves any open documents and programs to your hard disk, including information about the programs that you were using, and then shuts down your computer.” “When should I shut down my computer? Shut down your computer only when you need to install or repair hardware, such as installing a new hard disk or video card, or adding memory (RAM). • Shut down your computer when you need to do one of the following: • Repair the hardware. • Install a new hard disk or video card. • Add memory. • When installing hardware or adding memory, always follow the manufacturer's instructions. You should also shut down your computer if you don't want it to wake to run a scheduled task or when you don’t plan to use the computer for several days.” Frogfeld: I don’t know how to fix Vista’s power settings controls if they don’t function correctly. As I understand Shutdown after Sleep, it only happens when your battery get too low, rather than after a set time. Is this how you tested it? Will your computer hibernate? Hibernate is a completely ‘power-off’ condition, so you can use it indefinitely. A LOT of people consider hibernation unreliable, but I’ve never had trouble using it. But that still doesn’t solve your basic problem. You say your machine is new. Can you call the manufacturer for warranty help? Interesting....where is any link to the above info? It's from Quote Frogfeld: |

Solve : Can I copy the drivers on my computer to prepare for a new OS install?? |
Answer» I just bought a new laptop. It came with Vista Home Premium on it. My IT guy at work says I need Vista Business Edition. I will use the computer in a domain at work. They tell me the Home edition will not connect or something.I believe that is not correct. Compare Windows Vista editions. Quote from: jimpl on August 17, 2008, 08:44:41 PM Oh, what about all the other stuff that came on the machine. I know the Business edition does not support the Media Center stuff, but it came with a web cam and a digital TV tuner, and Blu Ray DVDWhat do you mean by "it came with a web cam and a digital TV tuner, and Blu Ray DVD"? Are you saying it came hardware devices? Of COURSE, that's not true, so you must be talking about features in Windows. And, any of those devices will work with Home Premium. Quote from: jimpl on August 17, 2008, 08:44:41 PM I just saw somewhere else that someone said there is no direct upgrade from Home Premium to Business. Is that true? The Upgrade DVD I bought did not indicate that.Again, I believe that is not correct. I see nothing at Microsoft Windows Vista Business Upgrade w/ SP1By Microsoft which indicates Home Premium can not be directly upgraded to the Business edition. The bottom line: Don't trust your IT guy and verify information you've acquired through hearsay. I have seen in several places now that say the Home Premium Edition is missing some networking stuff that the Business edition has, although that's really mute now. I was really just trying to find out if I will have to reload the other programs and their drivers that are on my laptop. The other things on my machine are a web cam, built into the lid. Built in digital tv tuner, and the Blueray dvd read/writer. I have used the web cam while "Skyping"and I watched TV on my laptop, so I know they came on the machine. I didn't put them there. JimContact the manuf. and order a 64Bit Driver CD for that machine... If it's not available i wouldn't proceed with the install ...i'd save it for another machine. |

Solve : No Administrator? |

Answer» Some how in adding a new user on vista, i made both user's standard. Now I have no administrator and can't really do anything. I would just backup everything and reboot the whole system, but i can't back up without a administrator. Any help would be greatly appreciated.what version of vista do you have?Is it even possible to have no admin.? I doubt it.... Just to see, when you start your computer, tap F8 to get to safe mode, and boot into it. See if there is an admin account there Quote Is it even possible to have no admin.?Yes. In Vista, real admin account is hidden by default. Dshack Enable real admin account: http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/enable-the-hidden-administrator-account-on-windows-vista/, make appropriate changes to standard accounts. Quote I don't like vista personally so I never used it.Makes no sense to me. How can you not like something, you never used? Now, if it's so easy, why don't you provide the original poster with step-by-step instructions how to do it?FRIENDS have it. Teachers on their personal computers. I've seen them use it and decided i didn't like it. They way its set up and everything. Quote from: Broni on August 17, 2008, 02:01:39 PM Now, if it's so easy, why don't you provide the original poster with step-by-step instructions how to do it? Open a notepad document. Type "command.com" and save it to the desktop as "-whatever you want-.bat" Open the file on ur desktop. It should bring up command prompt. Type in " at HH:MM /interactive command.com" where HH:MM is the military time 1 to 2 mins before your computers current time. For example if the time is 2:15 in the afteroon, you would type in 14:17. Close the command prompt and wait. When your computer turns to the time u put in a command prompt will open. Press cntrl Alt DELETE and find explorer.exe under processes. END process. In the command prompt that auto opened, type in explorer.exe (after the other explorer finishes closing, your start menu and desktop shortcuts will disapear) this will RESTART explored but you will be logged in under system. Alot of welcome screens pop up because this is probably the first te anyone has ever acessed this account. From here you can do whatever u need to do. And that is how u hack a secure computer =]thanks iamtonsoffun247, you were right. appreciate the help. |

Solve : Blue Screens of Death in Vista after a while? |
Answer» Hello, I am having some very annoying problems. My computer, a custom built pc, keeps getting the bsod after i leave it on for about 8 hours or so. It doesn't matter what programs I have running, it will just crash after a while. I have ran memtest86 on each individual stick of my RAM and have found no errors. The bsod is usually a 0x0000003B win32.sys or csrss.exe SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION . I have ran hard drive tests on my main hard drive and have found nothing. I have installed a hard drive cooler on one of my hard drives with no effect towards system stability. I'm not quite sure what to do. Below are my pc specs and then I have the debugging information from the memory dump (a large one, not a minidump). |

Solve : my computer will not open windows....please help!!!? |

Answer» I use windows Vista....recently I INSTALLED an original program into the computer.....and the computer can not open windows anymore......the diagnosis tells me the system has shut down the windows to protect my computer from damages which may be caused by the installation of a new software or a hardware. To correct the problem, it tells me to open the windows first and then change the settings...that is IMPOSSIBLE for me.......please help.... What was the program? Do you have the Windows Vista DVD? Do you happen to have another computer or have access to another computer? Can you boot Vista in Safe Mode at all?no....can't do anything....not even in safe mode....can not open any windows at all.... ..and ya...i purchased the program from the website itself...This is going to be hard to fix without access to another computer and without the Vista CD... Can you borrow one by any chance?I can get the Vista CD.....then shall I follow the instructions in the CD or do u have any special instructions to follow?.... OR ...I do have access to another computer (not mine)....what can I do?... eMule is not illegal. It's P2P program, but... Why did you PAY, since it's a free program? Windows shut down right after installation, or you downloaded something using that program? When you try to start your computer, how far does it go?i am not sure if the problem was due to this emule program but I did download some movies and then there was this problem.....this was the only new program I installed in my computer.... ...when I start the computer.....there appears a blue screen with something like "windows system error"...and it tells me to start window to correct the problem when I can not open the window in the first place...not even in the safe mode ....so I am struck here.....WANT to format new but don't wanna lose my data....helpJust a thought: you may have downloaded a virus. Most likely. If you don't have Vista DVD.... Download Vista Recovery Disc iso image: http://neosmart.net/blog/2008/windows-vista-recovery-disc-download/ Burn it to CD, or DVD: http://neosmart.net/wiki/display/G/Burning+ISO+Images+to+a+CD+or+DVD Boot from created disk. At first screen click on Repair your computer: This will bring you to a new screen where the repair process will look for all Windows Vista installations on your computer. When done you will be presented with the System Recovery Options dialog box: After this, it will present you with a list of options including startup repair, system restore and command prompt: Try System Restore, first. If that doesn't work, try Startup Repair. thanks Broni and Carbon...I will try Broni's last ADVICE....and I will let you know if it works or not.......... |

Solve : Windows Vista Downgrade help? |
Answer» my brother has windows vista on his computer, but i don't know exactly what brand because some of it is custom. any ways he wants to downgrade from vista to xp by inserting it in the cd drive. then change boot to boot from cd. then we found out that vista will not let u downgrade to a lower version becuz it is a peace of *censored*. then we read that we could reformat the whole hardrive then begin again to boot from the cd. this is were we are stuck at. any help would be greatly appreciated.I was fortunate as my HP came with a recovery disk which also gave me an option to downgrade ... and so it made formatting easy - then applied XP after. As long as you have Vista it would be a shame to throw it away. Here's a link to a very good article about how to dual-boot XP and Vista. Normally you can't add an older OS to a newer one, but this shows how. IMO vista isnt worth the extra space on the HD. wait for windows 7.0!I formatted my new laptop that came with Vista, but before, in the BIOS I disabled SATA and then Windows XP ran 100% fine first go. Boot from CD needs to be selected in BIOS too if you have Win Xp cd. The whole thing took less than an hour... although it took me a WEEK to discover I needed to disable SATA. What is it with Vista? It's meant to be great, but no-one likes it... I'm just annoyed each time I have to select something it takes me four mouse clicks where XP took one, if any. I've had a Notebook PC with Vista for about a year now. While I agree that getting into certain parts of Windows, such as various features managed via Control Panel, take longer to get to because there are more screens to go through, I certainly would not buy Windows XP to install on a computer that already has Vista on it. Once you get used to it, I think you'll find using Vista is not much different from using XP when it comes to actually getting work done. For example, with both XP and Vista, I have the Quick Launch toolbar enabled and put icons to frequently used programs on it. I'm curious, although the numerous posts on PC boards around the Net tell me I am in the majority... a lot of people don't really like Vista. Is there a way to make it faster, i.e. less steps to get somewhere? and the look... ? is there a message board around discussing the pros and cons of Vista? Quote from: chad on August 06, 2008, 09:14:39 AM is there a message board around discussing the pros and cons of Vista? That is a very good idea! What not start one? Quote from: chad on August 06, 2008, 09:14:39 AM and the look... ? As far as appearance goes - I did before I ditched it - get set up pretty much as I wanted. Being an old traditionalist I run my system still as the classic appearance ...... what I see now is not greatly different from what I saw back in '95 days. By making up your own theme and saving it - introducing classic everywhere possible, you can ''turn back the clock'' quite successfully. As for the numbers of steps - didn't dig deep enough for long enough but I am sure some short cuts are there. Theres also the other issues... it takes up TWICE as much space, twice as much memory... and seems to be slower. Security?? I have not had a single issue with XP and Symantec in THREE years. And what exactly was WRONG with XP...? Except MS have now developed Anti Piracy on Vista and want us all to switch. I bet bugs will suddenly creep in with XP updates so we all go Vista! (oohh conspiracy!) Quote from: Carbon Dudeoxide on August 06, 2008, 09:42:13 AM XP's Windows Classic or what? Yes - Classic that in effect KEEPS pretty much the appearance of old 95 ... as well as Win2k. Of course the old 95 look had no two color graduation for title bars but overall the look and feel has been maintained to pretty much the old look. I noticed within Vista that there seemed pretty much the same means of doing this as I do in XP.Try this. Lots of tips for Vista http://itsvista.com/topic/commands/Win2K Rules ! ! |

Solve : Deleting Partition Made In Vista Premium? |
Answer» I'm running Vista Premium on a 500GB capacity computer. I used the vista partition that came with Vista. I NEED to partition the my C DRIVE down to 100 GB. Yet I made a mistake weeks ago and did it wrong, and just noticed that the drives are partitioned in MB and not GB. Yet that was the only option when I did this. Now I cannot seem to delete the two new created drives. So I can start over if possible. I know that I have to sign in under the hidden administrators account, yet I'm not sure If I can still delete the hard drives now. I'm scared that it will EFFECT my C drive with my stuff on it. Can anyone SHED light on this? I'm also wondering if there is a Partition Software that is still compatible with Vista that could do a better job, than what COMES with Vista itself. |

Solve : internet conection sharing in win vista? |
Answer» Hello, If I have to use internet connection sharing, then do I need to have a disk or something to transfer settings from one computer to the other? You should treat setting up a home network and internet connection sharing as TWO separate issues. No you don't need "disk or something to transfer settings from one computer to the other" for internet connection sharing; but it is SOMETIMES used to setup the underlying Local Area Network (LAN) configuration to permit file and printer sharing within the Small Office/Home Office (SOHO) and possibly the wireless access configuration. My personal preference is to manually setup these configurations as it forces you to learn what's involved (which will ALLOW you to maintain it down the road). To access the internet from both computers using Internet Connection Sharing does not require a setup disk. The sooner you start, the sooner you'll know what you don't know. |

Solve : Blank gray screen and frozen? |
Answer» I'm not SURE how to describe this, but while I'm WORKING on my laptop, the screen will suddenly go blank/blackish-gray; it will not respond to anything other than removal of all power sources or pressing the shutdown button for about five seconds. Upon restarting my computer, nothing appears to be wrong, other than it was shut down improperly...This is a reoccurring problem that has recently gotten worse, and I have no CLUE what's wrong. I have Vista, so maybe that's the problem; it doesn't matter what I was doing before it freezes. Help!!No idea right now but more info might help. "I was told that new computers often have problems" - hmmm ... sounds like sales-talk to me! 10 months old - I'd be looking for some tech support from maker.I agree totally! Quote from: ChrisXPPro on July 28, 2008, 08:32:33 PM Mfg and model. Do you use the laptop on a hard clean surface. Down load Speedfan: http://www.almico.com/speedfan.php. Report back temperature readings. In the meantime, remove and re-seat RAM: Power down, remove battery. Ground yourself and remove the memory. If you have 2 modules, just replace 1 and boot and run. Run long enough that the error would normally occur. Repeat with other module. Be certain that the memory is fully seated. Post back results. Solve : Cannot Remove Icons From Desktop - Vista Home Ver.? |
Answer» I don't know how I managed it , but I have got icons on my desktop for Control PANEL, IE, Network, Computer and a folder named Public. System Restore? Could you elaborate a bit and tell me why a System Restore would be in order?System Restore would only WORK if you can go back to a date before you put those icons on your desktop. I can't figure out why you simply can't delete them by right-clicking them. Quote from: SuperDave on July 26, 2008, 10:35:27 AM System Restore would only work if you can go back to a date before you put those icons on your desktop. I can't figure out why you simply can't delete them by right-clicking them. Well That makes two of us That always worked before. I did a system restore for just prior to the icons showing up - that didn't work so I reversed that and did another a few days further back - that didn't work either. There was some kind of error message but I didn't make note of it. Maybe I should do it again to see what that was. I deleted a trial copy of a software I plan on buying, because I read that some downloads can cause goofy things to happen - that didn't help either. The last thing I did was a full scan and that only found a tracking cookie which I had removed but I've still got those icons on my desktop Vista just will not let me remove those icons. FYI the shortcuts are not a problem, I can delete them. I gotta tell ya - this is really getting to me! Quote FYI the shortcuts are not a problem, I can delete them. What shortcuts? Other, then those three? What options do you have, when you right click on any of those three? BTW, "Network", under Start menu, doesn't have "Show on desktop" option. The reason you cannot remove these is because they are "System Files" which Vista locks down a little tighter than in the past for security reasons. There are paid programs that will do this. If they bug you that much and that's an option post back and let us know...I have Vista on my laptop and there's not one icon/shortcut that I can't delete. I've never seen any of those files. I just put Control Panel on my desktop and I can delete it with a right-click or remove it by removing the checkmark....and... Quote BTW, "Network", under Start menu, doesn't have "Show on desktop" option....so I don't know, how it got there. Quote from: Broni on July 26, 2008, 06:41:48 PM QuoteFYI the shortcuts are not a problem, I can delete them. What shortcuts? Other, then those three? Actually there are 5 icons. Options are: open, explore, browse with paint shop pro, create shortcut and delete (which doesn't work either!) some of them have additional options that wouldn't have anything to do with removing them from my desktop. Yes, I am aware "Network" under Start Menu doesn't have "Show on destop" option, but it is infact on my desktop and I cannot get it off. The other shortcuts I referred to are actual shortcuts for software programs I have added. They have that little arrow on them indicating a shortcut. Quote from: patio on July 27, 2008, 07:24:17 AM The reason you cannot remove these is because they are "System Files" which Vista locks down a little tighter than in the past for security reasons. Why would Vista "lock" these icons on my desktop? They weren't there 2 days ago and I don't know what triggered them being placed there. I have not had a problem removing items from my desktop in the past. Quote from: SuperDave on July 27, 2008, 08:38:55 AM I have Vista on my laptop and there's not one icon/shortcut that I can't delete. I've never seen any of those files. I just put Control Panel on my desktop and I can delete it with a right-click or remove it by removing the checkmark. I have those same abilities, except for some reason Vista is not doing what it is supposed to do.Try Unlocker: http://ccollomb.free.fr/unlocker/ If it won't give you "Unlocker" option, when right clicking those desktop icons, open Windows Explorer, and navigate to "Desktop" folder, then right click on stubborn icons. Click "Unlocker". If simple "delete" through Unlocker won't work, it'll give you an option to delete on reboot.Try this, from here: http://help.lockergnome.com/vista/Desktop-Icons-delete-ftopict65186.html. The Desktop is actually a glorified interface for two folders: C:\Users\(Your Name)\Desktop and C:\Users\Public\Desktop (which is hidden). If you have the same file in each folder, they will both show up on your Desktop. The Public Desktop should be owned by the Administrator and C:\Users\(Your Name)\Desktop should be owned by the user. If you are the Administrator, can you navigate to these folders USING Windows Explorer and delete them there? If your context menu is gone (which is another issue), can you select one, and use Organize > Delete? If the files aren't in those folders, but they are on your desktop, try going to Control Panel > Personalization and then click on Display Settings. Change the Colors to a lower setting (e.g., from Highest to Medium). Then do the same again, and reset Colors back to the way it was originally. If that doesn't work, try deleting the (hidden) IconCache.db file under C:\Users\(Your Name)\AppData\Local\ and restart your computer. A new one will be built automatically. Quote try deleting the (hidden) IconCache.db file underIMPORTANT! Close down all explorer.exe processes using the Task Manager (or else it will create a faulty file at logoff) |

Solve : Vista - Strange PopUp? |
Answer» I get this weird popup. It is not related to me surfing the web because it can popup when I don't have a browser open. I have used SpyBot and SpywareBlaster and everything looks good on that END. I am unable to close this, I have to crtl.alt.delete to end it. I tried viewing source to gather some info but I am unable to get a right-click menu. I think I recall finding some article about getting a popup like this one in reference to Internet SignUp so I am not sure if that is what this is related to. |

Solve : Windows Vista Home Premium: Will Not Power Down Computer? |
Answer» Hello All: Before trying System Restore as Mcxeb52 suggested, try booting into Safe Mode and see if the computer shuts down normally there. Yes, test the safe mode first . Then if ok, then do the system restore using safe mode to be sure nothing affects the computer during the restoration process, although I have not yet experienced a problem doing system restore in normal mode except if the system restore point was too old. In any case, try it out and let us know how it goes I suggested doing it in Safe Mode because, if the computer cannot turn off in Normal Mode how does he complete the System Restore? Quote from: Carbon Dudeoxide on July 25, 2008, 05:43:14 PM I suggested doing it in Safe Mode because, if the computer cannot turn off in Normal Mode how does he complete the System Restore? Yes, definitely ... so that nothing will be preventing the system restore from not completing successfully and that includes the shut down process if windows won't even shut down for the restoration process to work Good Luck. Solve : Manually shut down computer during windows update? |
Answer» My windos update (a Servicepack update) was taking a very long TIME to update, so I MANUALLY shut down the computer. Upon powering it back up, the "Startup Repair" ran and had me restart a few different times. After about 5 times, its said that windows cannot repair this computer automatically. so I manually shut down the computerYou won't do it in the future, will you? Quote from: bigjim28 on July 27, 2008, 12:57:13 PM I manually shut down the computer. By pressing the power button? Or (even) worse, pulling the plug? Man, you were crazy to do this! Ok, I fixed it. It was vista. I ran the system RESTORE feature by pressing F8 (or control and F11) right away when the computer restarted and going to "boot with last known good configuration". It basically started my windows as brand NEW and I had to back up all files. Not a GREAT fix but it works, and probably is the only option. ThanksThanks for posting back |

Solve : Want to uninstall program that needs install disk but don't have? |
Answer» I have a number of PROGRAMS on my computer now that I don't want but I can't uninstall them because it says I need the install disk which I don't have. Windows Installer CleanUp UtilityInteresting.....I solved the problem of uninstalling unwanted programs by doing a clean install of Windows Vista. Everything that I didn't want in XP went BYE bye as well as everything I did want. Had to reinstall a good number of things. I was having problems with Visual Basic 2008 Express in Vista. The problems didn't occur in XP. Someone told me it's better to do a clean install of Vista if you can so that's why I did it. The problems in Visual Basic 2008 didn't go away. Some screens in my VB2008 app run much much slower than they did in XP and I can't get into the designer. Programming, working with computers and life is never ending ever new problems. Learn to enjoy problem solving then you can enjoy all of it. I came across this recently though I don't need it now. http://www.perfectuninstaller.com/index.php Revo is free. www.revouninstaller.comWindows Installer Cleanup Utility is nice program. Micrsoft says: Quote The Windows Installer CleanUp Utility does not perform the following functions: • Remove Windows Installer Which basically means same as uninstalling because program will no longer run once removed from the cleanup utility list. But you already reinstalled windows, so it's all good I guess |
