Solve : Memory Issues, probably??

Answer»

Hi All -

First off, thanks for reading this and for any help you can provide. the TL;DR version is my memory has failed memtest86 in a couple different ways, but has also passed it. Not sure what to do next.

I have had a pretty unstable system for the majority of the time I have had this computer (about 5 years now), but it never really impacted what I was doing with the computer. I would get the BSOD about once a week, but it wasn't that big of a deal.

Recently, though, I have started to play some games (lightweight games, mainly). I was playing Orcs Must Die, on the lowest settings, and any time more than 3 orcs were on the screen, it made gameplay super choppy. After searching around the internet, different forums, etc, and everywhere I looked they said that OMD should play on almost any system without trouble. I went to the systemrequirementslab Can You Run it, and it said I was above the maximum settings.

I updated my video card driver, and that didn't help. I made sure Vista had SP2, but that didn't help. I then ran the Vista Memory Diagnostics tool, which TOLD me I have a memory issue. I found the Gskill tech support folks recommending making sure my memory speed was correct in bios, so updated the timing settings. No help. I downloaded and ran the memtest86 utility, and of the 4 times I have run it, here are the results:

First time: Error Conf. Value 181, Test 9 had 65000+ errors

I removed one stick of memory, ran the utility, no errors. I swapped the sticks, ran the utility, no errors.

I put both sticks back in, ran the utility, no errors.

I thought good, problem solved. I fired up the GAME, it got choppy, it crashed and BSOD my computer. I ran the memtest, and now I have errors.

Error Conf. Value 172, Total error bits 9

Then I ran it again, and got an Error Conf Value of 200, with 14 error bits.

G.SKILL 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 1066 (PC2 8500) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model F2-8500CL5D-4GBPK

Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 Kentsfield 2.4GHz LGA 775 Quad-Core Processor BX80562Q6600

GIGABYTE GA-EP35-DS3L LGA 775 Intel P35 ATX Intel Motherboard

EVGA 384-P3-N851-AR GeForce 8800 GS 384MB 192-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Support Video Card

Any advice or help is appreciated. Thanks again!
Never ignore memory errors. You either have to replace the memory or verify your BIOS settings for type of memory you have.
If you want to continue to use you PC, that is, of course, your decision. You should understand that memory errors can led to unpredictable problems.
This is a tricky one, because it could be the memory, the settings, or the memory controller. Have you tried downclocking the memory, say to 800 or 667MHz, to see if this changes anything? Leave the voltage and timings as instructed by G.Skill. It's also worth upping the IMC voltage in the BIOS a couple of notches, see if that helps.

Which even supports micro$oft file formats and can convert between open source file formats and closed source file formats.

FBThanks for the info,might try that,was it a free download?yup 100% free.

FBWindows doesn't include a word processor anyway, but MS Office is often bundled.
I do like Abiword myself, not a fan of OpenOffice any more but that's just me.
It is free, and you can't really fault it.ThanksWindows includes a simple word processor, WordPad, but I think you'll find AbiWord a much better word processor than WordPad.

When MS Office is included in a new system, it's usually a trial version. After the trial period, the product can not be used until properly REGISTERED and paid for. Still, the Home and Student version that is usually the version, if any, found on new systems can be bought for about $150, much less than the Pro, and other, versions. And, that may include a license to install it on three computers; at least, that the deal I was offered with the Home and Student trial version installed on the Compaq notebook PC I purchased in July 2007.

Microsoft Works is also often bundled with new systems; it includes a fairly basic word processor, spreadsheet, database, and some other features. Thanks for the info

Solve : Messed up of a few system file icons!?

Answer»

I can't believe myself. I've had done two major bonehead mistakes in one week! And I thought I was getting the hang of all of this!

Hopefully this is a simple one to fix. I messed up quite a few Vista system icons and I can't seem to get them all back to default. It all started when I was opening a .dll file that I thought was tied into Firefox. I can't remember whether it was or not. All I know is now t all of my.dll files have a Firefox logo icon. And if you open up properties, it says "Opens with Firefox!

So I did a lot of searching for answers. One included deleting the Icon database file in C:\ Users\Name\AppData\Local, then rebooting. Supposedly that will set things right. It didn't!

Then a tried a variety a Icon fix-it programs including WinBubbles, Vista Visual Master and a bunch of little dinky fix-it programs, some that were just a registry key to add. But nothing worked.

But while I was writing this thread, I kept trying things out, in hopes that I wouldn't have to BOTHER you with issue (and actually so I could then bother you with another issue I'm having!) So I tried one last Google search. What I came up with was a registry entry called extfix.

Actually I think it has a slightly different name on other websites, but the fix is the same. And just by adding this information to the registry, this was supposed to restore all the file EXTENSIONS. And it did, at least for my.dll files. I just right-clicked and hit MERGE, rebooted and went into windows to see if my .dll icons had changed. They had. It currently looks like a blank white piece of paper that has the tip folded back on the top right and on the page are two BLUE gears, one large and one small.

I also open up properties on a .dll file and it says "Opens with unknown application", which I believe is what it is supposed to say. So now with that fixed, I moved on to the next concern. The icon and file association for Configuration Settings or .ini files. This needs a little explanation how they got the way they are.

When I was running one of those icon restore programs that I mentioned, I was trying to actually change the Firefox icon that was associated with the .dll files. The program gave me quite a few icon choices to pick from and I picked the one that I thought most closely resembled the default icon that I could remember, a blank white page with lines on it and the top right corner folded back. It has one large blue gear on it leaning towards the left.

But when I went to change the .dll icon, for some reason it didn't do anything for the .dll file icon. INSTEAD it changed the .ini file icons. And now they're all that way. And if you click on properties of a .ini file it says "Opens with Notepad". Now I'm not sure, that might be correct, but shouldn't it say "Opens with unknown program" just like the .dll file?

Either way, it's obvious to me that besides with the .ini file icon possibly being wrong, it probably does not also have the right association. So that's where I'm at currently. One problem is fixed, but I'm not sure about the .ini files. Everything in Windows does work ok though however, which I am thankful for.

I patiently wait for your input.
Jan LaFata
Quote

It currently looks like a blank white piece of paper that has the tip folded back on the top right and on the page are two blue gears, one large and one small.
This is exactly how system file icon looks like, so you're fine.
Quote
And if you click on properties of a .ini file it says "Opens with Notepad".
This is fine, too. By default, they're not associated with Notepad, but since .ini file is simply a text file, many people, including myself, associate .ini files with Notepad.
You're fine

Solve : Blank screen towards the end of windows 7 reinstall?

Answer»

My brother's Samsung laptop (sorry, don't know the name, cannot find out) has had a windows update, causing the computer to be extremely slow after booting. He found the OS disc that came with the laptop and I popped it in and had it reinstall the OS, but keep the drives and such. Windows 7 almost finished INSTALLING, but it has to reboot and do some sort of SETUP. When booted in normal mode, the screen is blank (No video being sent), and in safe mode, video is there, but I am prompted with the message to reinstall, as windows cannot be installed in safe-mode. I have no access to my desktop or anything. If there is a fix other than wiping the laptop clean, please reply. Thanks in advance. Why didn't you just uninstall the update?

At this point I have no idea what you've done, so I suggest you boot to the Windows DVD and do a CLEAN install (either delete and recreate the system partition or at the very least, reformat it). If there is data on the drive that you need to save you can either try a parallel install (install a second instance of Windows) or, best bet, slave the drive to another computer, COPY the files you need, then do a clean install.I would like to simply delete all the partitions and have one big one. (His hard drive was split into four) Is there any way to do this without having an OS loaded? Also, I don't have any of those fancy doohickeys that turn an internal hard drive into an external one. Nevermind, saw that an option was available while the disc was being booted. Thanks for helping. It's still unclear what your goal is for this laptop...
1 of the 4 partitions is most likely the HIDDEN Recovery partition...i'd keep that if i were you...
If you want it to stay as is without a re-install...which would wipe everything then the other partitions cand be merged into one....
I suggest you POST a screenshot of the HDD from Disk Management...The link below is from Microsoft.
Installing and reinstalling Windows 7
Note there are options to format the disk if you want. You should not need other software and hardware. It is all on the Windows 7 Install DVD.

Too late i'm afraid...wait til he stops back cause all his data is gone...
I predict it...My goal was for the laptop to run at a decent speed after login, preferably with all the data still in tact, but part of the hard drive was backed up, so it's okay.

Answer»

alright this is my last time using my old computer. it is a HP Pavillion 513n running WINDOWS XP SP3. it did have a verry verry VERRY bad virus problem but i was using it perfectally before it shut down. here is the story of what happened. i just got a new laptop and i wanted to transfer my music and other crap from my old one to my new one. it always acts wierd i dont have time to explain what i mean by that. but i was starting to transfer files when i noticed that i needed my keyboard, so as i stood up to plug it in i tripped over the power cable and accidentally unplugged it from the wall. i did not have the keyboard plugged in cause my computer wont startup with one plugged in. but now it wont startup at all. i try to turn it on and it boots to the page that says boot in safe mode, boot normally etc. i have selected every option and it starts to load up and then just restarts itself. i disabled auto restart and it came to a blue page that says "a problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer."
then it says "PROCESS_INITIALIZATION_FAILED" at the bottom it says " Techinical information" "*** Stop: 0x0000006B (0xc000009c, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)" it tells me to boot it in safe mode but i cant. i NEED those files on my computer. please help me thanks. i will do ANYTHING to try and get those files. i have VERRY important documents that i need.it actuallysays "PROCESS1_INITIALIZATION_FAILED" i forgot the "1" after process in my first post.Having Googled that particular Stop error, most hits refer to a corrupt hard drive.

While you may find hits regarding certain software as being the culprit...it always points back to the hard drive.

Your best bet may be to repair or try to recover your Windows operating system, but there's no guarantee that either will work.

You also may want to note...there is no guarantee your DATA will be recoverable. However, there is the chance you can fix this.

First off...you may want to take a look at the following Knowledge Base article from Microsoft:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314058

is there any other way i can do it that will garuntee me not losing filesWindows XP System Recovery should allow you to fix the boot sector of the drive...which, in fact, may be the culprit here...and your data should remain safe.

However...let it be known...that I, for one, cannot make you any promises. I can only point you in the right direction.

You do have the option of data recovery specialists...but that would be my last resort...since they are expensive.

Your best bet would be to try and repair the corrupt MBR (Master Boot Record).i dont have a Windows Setup floppy disks or the Windows CD-ROM I have a idea. this is not losing files

You can go and buy or borrow a hard disk box fit for you disk drive of the old one.the hard disk box can enable you to access to hard disk drive by usb,and use the old hard disk dirve just like a "big" flash disk.

oh, I got another way .
I call this Plan B,the previous it PLAN A.
you can borrow a install disk of windows XP or win2k ,
use the disk to install system, before the setup program copy file to hard disk, you should choose another logical drive (not any one of your systems install on your current system, I assume that you might install more than one system on your computer) .After rightly installing the new system, you can copy files or any other THING your want .If you can't intall the system try PLAN A !

good luck, buddy.i cant get a disc it that hard disk box thing my only hope? how MUCH do they cost? where can i buy one, can i get it at a store like Circuit city? Solve : FBI GUI manager trying to continually run and install programs in Vista??

Answer»

Hi all... a tricky one!

I have this darn new HP Presario up and running again, with system restore disks installed and back to Vista Home (yay)

Something called FBI GUI is running every time I switch on, trying to 'install your programs' and I did let it go for a while, but now it continually lags, stopping at the one point and just not doing anything at all. The progress bar goes on and on and on... for hours. (until I restart) and I can't access other programs once I 'maximize' the GUI window.

Since the restore, everything seems to be working well, except I can't really test it properly until this thing stops loading, or trying to load... I tried to delete it so I could at least go and test the machine, but, alas, Vista tells me I do not have permission to delete things on my own computer. Silly me.

I'd love to know... if anyone can help me (I'm very new to Vista)

a) how to stop it running
b) should I stop it running
c) what the *censored* is it?

It's obviously a program that gets installed by EITHER Vista or HP at the restore point... as I have not put anything else on it yet at all since the restore disks were put on.

I have not been asked to set up permissions since the system restore; could this be a part of the problem not being able to delete it?

It's a brand newie HP Presario C700, 1GB ram, 120GB HD, Windows Vista home, 2.13gb intel celeron.

thanks....! a long winded one; I hope I havent left any info out...

FBI GUI:
http://www.google.com.hk/search?hl=en&q=FBI+GUI&btnG=Google+Search&meta=&aq=f&aq=f

Is it not in Add and Remove Programs in Control Panel? The name stands for File Based Installer Graphical User Interface Manager.
It is an automatic installer that allows for the recovery of your computer as well as driver initializer. While it is working, it makes a baseline image to help in future recoveries. It will have to run to completion before it can be effective. Can take an hour or two if the computer is a brand new one.
So that's what Wikipedia tried to tell me? Thanks for that...

I'll let it run it's course. It just seemed to be dead... for about 80 minutes. :-)

I'll let the forum know what happens...

chad - Congratulations on your new computer! I have one bit of unsolicited advice for you. As soon as you can, consider increasing the RAM to at least 2 GB; more, up to 4 GB, if you can. The "user experience" improvement between 1 GB and 2 GB is huge and is noticeable as soon as you power on the computer. It is an upgrade well worth the money.

Note, however, that, if you get 4 GB of memory, your operating system will only use ≈3.5 GB - this is not a Vista issue, but, rather, a constraint on 32 bit operating systems.

Enjoy your new computer - and, if you increase the RAM, post back and let us know what you think of the difference in performance.

Speaking of performance, another issue that will SLOW down a new Vista install is the indexing service. This service facilitates the Search feature but takes a day or two to build an initial INDEX - suggest letting the computer run overnight to get the initial index building out of the way.

Well, system restore disks didn't work... the "restore failed. Try again?"

Has anyone any tips on how to get the restore disks to install succesfully? there aren't many options once that formatting begins!

c

Back to the beginning - why were you trying to recover the system?

I assume that the system is under warranty, if so, be careful that you don't void the warranty trying to fix it!Trying to recover it from attempting to install XP onto it, when it came with Vista. Then I discovered about eight devices not functioning properly on the new pc with XP and I had to get new drivers, but not specific ones for Xp, just ones that would work sort of ALLRIGHT... so I decided, sounds bad, might just go with Big Brother and put Vista back on...

It's OK about warranty... every step (including those taken to get Xp onto it) has been taken in discussion with HP help online, and I've saved all my conversations with them. They supplied me the recovery disks FOC...

still no good with the recovery though! It keeps 'failing'! Might be back in touch with the HP helpdesk...

I understand the desire for XP - I made my wife's HP laptop into a dual boot because she complained so much about Vista! The reality was that once I increased the RAM to 2 GB, Vista wasn't so bad! Hence, my suggestion above. (My wife still uses the XP side 95% of the time, though!)

Okay, sounds like you've got the warranty thing covered, best of luck

On topic for just a minute , you may want to go to your hard drive manufacturer's website, download their diagnostic software and run it to verify that your hard drive is okay.Do you have the HP Driver CD ? ?
Have you remembered to run it and re-install your motherboard drivers after each install you tried ? ?

This should be done right after Windows is installed otherwise the machine will not function properly...I sorted it... I had turned off the SATA in BIOS to run XP... I needed to turn it back ON to re-install Vista!

cheers all

I'm back to my desktop with XP now... I no like Vista. XP makes me feel safe and cosy

Solve : Problem Event Name:CLR20r3?

It runs Windows Vista. About a month after I got it, it started to act narcoleptic, falling asleep and not waking up unless I hard reset it. I'm sure this has caused all sorts of havoc, and I've taken it in to Geek Squad twice for that, but they are still scratching their HEADS. That's some of it. About a month ago, I bought Business Plan Pro and have been toiling away at the PERFECT business plan. The computer fell asleep in the middle of this and the program wouldn't work. I uninstalled, reinstalled (realized I lost the serial numbers), bought a new version of the software, same thing. installed the repair, ETC, etc. I took it in to Geek Squad (I have a Best Buy card, otherwise I wouldn't have) and after $130, 3 different techs messing with my settings (and losing my research on that business plan in the process), they gave it back to me without fixing the problem. They UPDATED my .NET, they cleaned the hard drive. The only thing they said I can do now is reformat the hard drive. Since I don't have the rest of my life to do that, or $130 to have them do it, I'm hoping that there is another option. This is what the thing says:
Problem Event NAME: CLR20r3
Problem Signature 01: pas.bppenu11.exe
Problem Signature 02: 1.0.0.0
Problem Signature 03: 46fd7686
Problem Signature 04: System.Configuration
Problem Signature 05: 2.0.0.0
Problem Signature 06: 47577dd9
Problem Signature 07: 1a8
Problem Signature 08: 4d
Problem Signature 09: IOIBMURHYNRXKW0ZXKYRVFN0BOYYUFOW
OS Version: 6.0.6001.2.1.0.768.3
Locale ID: 1033
I googled the *censored* out of this, but all I got was talk about .NET problems, network problems, and debugging stuff. I'm not a proficient geek, but I can get by if you explain things. I am at a complete loss and I hope someone can help me get this $330 program working. Solve : Vista Dell disk on Acer laptop?

In addition, they didn't provide any sort of disc for reinstall.

We would really like to get rid of this hidden partition and reinstall his Vista. We have a Dell Vista disc from a friend of his, but we don't want to try formatting and installing this disc unless we're positive that it will work.

I have confirmed that we have the Windows serial NUMBER on a sticker on the bottom of the computer.

So if we were to do a full format and then try to install using this disc, would it work successfully and would the hidden partition be gone? The hidden partition you're referring to is more than likely the recovery partition for that particular laptop.

If I were you, I'd visit the computer manufacturer's website for instructions on how to perform a full system recovery...as well as reading your owner's manual.

This is why your computer did not come with recovery software...performing a full system recovery will wipe the hard drive clean and reinstall all the software that originally came with this computer...so consider yourselves warned. When you perform this recovery...all the data you've added since its purchase will be gone and will have to be added again. Hopefully, you've been backing up as you go...

Good luck!We are honestly not concerned with any data on the computer. It has hardly been used and due to this hidden partition issue, my boyfriend has really only been using as a once-in-awhile web browsing computer.

I understand that the recovery software is probably in the hidden partition, but this partition isn't small... it's like 40gb.

That's 1/4 of the total size of the drive!

We really want that space back!

Do you have any suggestions on how to remove the partition? In the past, I scoured the site and it gave directions on how to create backup discs (we ended up with 9 of them), but no instructions on how to remove the partition. PartitionMagic doesn't work on Vista, to my knowledge...This will not work and i don't suggest even trying...

Reason is all manuf. who supply an OEM CD with an operating system on it tailor it to the machine it's tied to including the drivers and such for a particular machine...
Chances are at worst it will erase all your data and never even bootup.

The hidden partition contains everything you need to re-install Vista clean...contact the manuf. and get the instructions.
Some show this as an option right at boot time.

Saviour you type faster than me... Just saw your latest reply....you type faster than Saviour

Follow the manuf. directions for creating a bootable Recovery CD.
Make 2 copies to be safe.
Recover the machine from one of the CD's to make sure they work properly.
Then post back for info on getting rid of the hidden partition...we want to make sure it works first !Ahh... drivers... duh. I didn't even think about that. I was more concerned with the Vista install than anything.

Ok, then that takes us back to the hidden partition issue... how to get rid of the hidden partition once we have the system restore data...

Edit: you were responding when I was typing... hehWell...I'm a little slow...I can see I'm no longer needed around here...

Keep us posted...Just to put it here for future reference, it's an Extensa 5420.

Searching for system restore information now. I'll have my boyfriend pull the disc tonight and I'll poke my head back in when he has confirmed that the disc works. Actually you can delete the partition in the "disk managerment" of "computer managerment"(<-right click on "My Computer" choose manager in popup menu).
After you delete it , you can rebuild a patition, assign it a new volume, and the you can use it's space.

remark: the content of the hidden partition will be lost.
and I would be sure to make a system restore point before you start working on deleting the hidden partition so that you can restore your computer in the event that you have encountered any problems in the process

Solve : Can I copy the drivers on my computer to prepare for a new OS install??

Answer»

I just bought a new laptop. It came with Vista Home Premium on it. My IT guy at work says I need Vista Business Edition.
I bought the upgrade DVD, and am currently waiting for Microsoft to send the 64 bit version. I'm assuming I will need all the same DRIVERS that are on the machine now. Can they be copied onto a cd for reinstall, or will I have to go on the web afterwards and download them?

JimSince you have an "upgrade DVD", rather a full version disk, the drivers should be retained when you install the upgrade. In other words, you aren't going to be formatting your hard drive, which ERASES everything on the hard drive, and then doing an entirely new installation of Windows. Installing the upgrade will make major changes to your current system, but does not require formatting the hard drive and starting from scratch to install Windows.

By the WAY, can you tell us why the IT guy said your need Vista Business Edition? What do you do, or plan to do, that requires Vista Business Edition? And, why do you need the 64 bit version? It came with 64bit and I was just keeping it the same. Funny though, why in the world would Microsoft sell the up grade for $200.00 then when you open the package tell you to send another $9.00 for the 64bit DVD?
I will use the computer in a domain at work. They tell me the Home edition will not connect or something.

Oh, what about all the other stuff that came on the machine. I know the Business edition does not support the Media Center stuff, but it came with a web cam and a digital TV tuner, and Blu Ray DVD
I just saw somewhere else that someone said there is no direct upgrade from Home Premium to Business. Is that true? The Upgrade DVD I bought did not indicate that.
Jim Quote from: jimpl on August 17, 2008, 08:44:41 PM

I will use the computer in a domain at work. Built in digital tv tuner, and the Blueray dvd read/writer.
I have used the web cam while "Skyping"and I watched TV on my laptop, so I know they came on the machine. I didn't put them there.
JimContact the manuf. and order a 64Bit Driver CD for that machine...
If it's not available i wouldn't proceed with the install ...i'd save it for another machine.

Solve : memory stick to computer trouble?

Answer»

Hi everyone,

I am wondering if anyone can help me with this problem I have with my digital camera memory stick.

When I insert the memory stick into any computer or laptop, the computer appears to recognise it (an icon appears in the "My Computer" folder).

However, when I click on the memory sticks icon it will not let me open the folder and therefore any of the files on the memory stick. It give the message: "Please insert a disk into drive ...".

Any ideas on what has HAPPENED and if/how I can go about fixing the problem and ultimately retreiving the files on the memory stick would be gratefully received.

I am using windows vista.

Thanks for you help.
Does the memory card work in your camera? When its in the camera, and you turn it on, does it have any errors, and can it take pictures FINE?

If so, it could be a problem with your card READER. Things can get lodged in there. Be sure the card is being inserted all the way, only a little bit should be hanging outside the card reader.
Also check to make sure its the right card reader.

If you cant figure out whats wrong with the card reader, (which could be a variety of problems, you may need to reinstall the driver) most cameras have a USB cable that will go directly into your computer so you can get photos that way.

Also, if you have a photo printer with a card reader built in, try plugging it into that. If your printer is CONNECTED to the computer, often the photos can be accessed through the printers card reader, they show up in My Computer like the internal card reader would. (But dont go about buying a photo printer just for that feature, its not worth it) the card works fine in the camera and i dont have a photo printer or usb cable.. when i insert the card into my computer a green light comes on so i know that is in there properlySome people seldom restart their computers, especially since operating systems are becoming so stable that its almost unnecessary... have you restarted since this ISSUE started?Try opening it from Windows Explorer (not Internet Explorer)...Do you think it may be locked?

Solve : Windows will not start?

Answer»

Hi, this is my first post and I really need some help. I just recieved my new acer as6920g yesterday and everything was fine until this morning, so here is the problem: when I start it everything is fine until the point where you normally write your password, but insted of getting the normal page the screen goes black and there is NOTHING I can do. I have tried pressing the F2 key and go through the diffrent options in there but nothing is working.

here are the specs:

acer as6920g
windows vista home premium
intel core 2 duo processor T5750 (2.0 GHz, 667 MHz FSB, 2MB L2 CACHE)
4GB DDR2 RAM
250GB HDD

Any help would be much appreciated. On a day old laptop?
What did you do the day before? (new hardware/software/downloads/installs/ect...)

If it is brand new, it should be well under warranty. Take it back to the store (with the receipt if you have it) and show them the problem.
They will most likely fix it for free or GIVE you a new one.Yep I know

I havent done anything special other than getting the latest updates for it. I currently live on a small island, so returning it is easier said than done but that is most likely what I will do if I can't get it up and running again.Hmmm....all right.

When the screen goes blank, what else happens? Anything stop running? Any sounds?

When you hold a light at the blank screen and/or look at different angles, can you see anything? No sounds or anything, but the screen shortly shuts off for half a sec. and then turns on again, I don't know if that means anything to you.Wait, does the screen still stay off, or is it blinking now?No its not blinking, it just turns off and then back on onceOh wait, I think I know what you mean now.

So you turn on the computer and once you see the login screen, it turns off and then turns on, right?I NEVER actually see the log on screen, its just black, I can see the marker though. sorry if my english has confused you No worries, I think it's just me. Getting a bit tired.

So. Exactly what happens? Explain it in this format:

You turn the computer on, it starts up, the loading bar goes across the screen and then.....okay here I go

I turn it on, then i get the message that windows hasent been closed correctly and I get to choose between opening windows normally or in the fail safe mode - both give the same result - I then choose either one, the load bar goes over the screen, then the screen shortly turns off and on again and then I see the marker on a black screen, and that's the end of the line for me Ah ok. That is very strange.......and all with a brand new laptop?

You don't happen to have the Vista DVD, do you?No, sadly I didn't get one with the laptopWell, UNLESS any other forum member has any suggestions, I think your best bet would be go back to the store seeing as that is an option.

Wait a sec, Google found this:
http://forums.cnet.com/5208-12546_102-0.html?forumID=133&threadID=262632&messageID=2575514

I haven't read it through yet but the title caught my eye.

Solve : Blue Screens of Death in Vista after a while?

Answer»

Hello, I am having some very annoying problems. My computer, a custom built pc, keeps getting the bsod after i leave it on for about 8 hours or so. It doesn't matter what programs I have running, it will just crash after a while. I have ran memtest86 on each individual stick of my RAM and have found no errors. The bsod is usually a 0x0000003B win32.sys or csrss.exe SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION . I have ran hard drive tests on my main hard drive and have found nothing. I have installed a hard drive cooler on one of my hard drives with no effect towards system stability. I'm not quite sure what to do. My graphics driver was updated to the newest version after this problem started so I don't really think reinstalling the driver for it will help, but I will try it. Thanks for you help.Is the operating system up to date?...as far as Service Packs and patches?Yes, the installation dvd came with SP1 on it and all patches/updates have been downloaded. Then, you're probably correct that another software program is causing it. Could be a conflict with the Vista OS. Seems to be a lot of that going around.

Keep us posted...

Solve : Windows Vista Downgrade help?

Answer»

my brother has windows vista on his computer, but i don't know exactly what brand because some of it is custom. any ways he wants to downgrade from vista to xp by inserting it in the cd drive. then change boot to boot from cd. then we found out that vista will not let u downgrade to a lower version becuz it is a peace of *censored*. then we read that we could reformat the whole hardrive then begin again to boot from the cd. this is were we are stuck at. any help would be greatly appreciated.I was fortunate as my HP came with a recovery disk which also gave me an option to downgrade ... and so it made formatting easy - then applied XP after.

You'll need to reformat and wipe that horrible Vista - but I think you'll need some other form of boot CD - one with suitable tools to allow you to this. Right now can't think of what to suggest but probably one of the gurus will step up and help on this. Not 100% here but you should be able to boot from the XP CD and format the drive from there. As long as you have Vista it would be a shame to throw it away. Boot from CD needs to be selected in BIOS too if you have Win Xp cd. The whole thing took less than an hour... although it took me a WEEK to discover I needed to disable SATA.

What is it with Vista? It's meant to be great, but no-one likes it... I'm just annoyed each time I have to select something it takes me four mouse clicks where XP took one, if any.

I've had a Notebook PC with Vista for about a year now. While I agree that getting into certain parts of Windows, such as various features managed via Control Panel, take longer to get to because there are more screens to go through, I certainly would not buy Windows XP to install on a computer that already has Vista on it. Once you get used to it, I think you'll find using Vista is not much different from using XP when it comes to actually getting work done. For example, with both XP and Vista, I have the Quick Launch toolbar enabled and put icons to frequently used programs on it. I'm curious, although the numerous posts on PC boards around the Net tell me I am in the majority... a lot of people don't really like Vista.

Is there a way to make it faster, i.e. less steps to get somewhere? and the look... ?

is there a message board around discussing the pros and cons of Vista?

Quote from: chad on August 06, 2008, 09:14:39 AM
is there a message board around discussing the pros and cons of Vista?

That is a very good idea! What not start one?

Quote from: chad on August 06, 2008, 09:14:39 AM
and the look... ?

As far as appearance goes - I did before I ditched it - get set up pretty much as I wanted. Being an old traditionalist I run my system still as the classic appearance ...... what I see now is not greatly different from what I saw back in '95 days.

By making up your own theme and saving it - introducing classic everywhere possible, you can ''turn back the clock'' quite successfully.

As for the numbers of steps - didn't dig deep enough for long enough but I am sure some short cuts are there. Solve : computer turns on by itself?

It won't do this during the day. I've got to where I unplug everything when I'm through with the computer for the day. When I plug the power cord in the next day, the computer lites-up, when I turn on the monitor, the screen saver is running.

I had the harddrive fail recently, replaced with harddrive out of another computer. Everything works ok, I didn't have this problem before the harddrive failed. Any ideas? thanksPlease post your computer specifications.

I'm guessing your are running Windows Vista and here's my thoughts as to why:
Many people are 'fooled' by the 'power off' SYMBOL at the bottom of the start menu. This is not a power off feature and is instead a stand-by button, to properly shut down you must click the arrow pointing towards the right and click shut down.
The computer may of gone in to stand-by then when you move your mouse (or plug it in the next day) it comes up to where you left it.

That's only a guess though and will be totally blown to pieces of you run Windows XP for example.

Regards,
Sean. The computer is an old dell P3, windows XP home edition. When the hardrive failed, I had another computer sitting here with a good harddrive so I swapped the harddrives. Everything seems to work ok, except now, the computer seems to want to turn on by itself, in the middle of the night.

The harddrive that failed had windows XP corporate edition, I believe. The harddrive in there now is windows XP home edition.

I had a computer that came on by itself. I kept it unplugged for 2 years while I wasn't using it. Then my modem went bad and when I replaced it, the computer never came on by itself again. So, it could be your modem. It sounds like "Wake on LAN" is enabled on your computer.

Right click "My Computer" (either located in the start menu, or on the desktop). Click Properties
Click the "Devices" tab, and click the button titled: "Device Manager"

Find (under "Network Adapters") your Ethernet card. It should have the numbers 10/100 or 10/100/1000 next to it.

Doubleclick the network adapter.

Go to the "Power Management" tab. Un-Check "Allow this device to wake the computer"
Check ""Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power"

Click Ok.

Restart your computer.

See if this resolves the issue.

Possible causes:
"Wake on LAN' enabled by Windows or in your BIOS
"Boot up at: ##:##" enabled in BIOS

In the even that this advice does not help, please tell us:

Do you click "Hibernate", "Shutdown", or "Standby" when you click the shutdown button on the start menu?

If you use "Standby" or "Hibernate" it could be allowing your computer to power back up due to the differences in the shutdown PROCEDURES that take place. Solve : SP1 horror story update!?

Answer»

If you happened to have read my long post on the problem I had after installing SP1, entitled, SP1 horror story, then you ought to be commended. I know it was really long. And so if you did read it, or even if you didn't, I wanted to update you on what's going on, It's very interesting, to say the least.

To review quickly

I have an MSI K8MM3-V motherboard that is Vista Basic compatable. It runs an AMD Athlon x64 processor at 3200 Mhz, 2 GB's of Kingston RAM, an NVidia GeForce 7600 256MB graphics card, a Creative Audigy SE sound card and a Coolmax 550 watt power supply. I run Vista Basic x64 on my machine.

This is the third motherboard from MSI that I am running. The first one was DOA, the second one, the PCI slots didn't work, and the one I currently have installed, is a different board, same model, but refurbished.

By the way, while were on the subject, the MSI technical department is a zoo and filled with some guys that I really THINK do not have a clue! SO I hope you never have to deal with them.

I just recently received this third board from MSI and quickly got to work installing Vista Home Basic x64 on it. I'd had some previous problems with SP1 when I was running a different motherboard, but those problems were easily fixed. By the way, I am not running that motherboard (an ABIT) anymore because it spazzed out on me. I was getting Windows lockups, BSOD's and all kinds of things.

I'm still not sure whether that board was Vista compatable or not. I was initially told that it was by ABIT, but if it wasn't, I think that may have had something to do with all of the problems I was having, though I am not sure. I am still trying to get a hold of ABIT to confirm whether indeed the board is Vista compatable or not and to find out out if it's Vista x64 compatible or not. I never thought to ask that when I first contacted them.

Anyway back to my MSI board. Right after SP1 was finished installing, it rebooted and showed a screen that said installation was successful. Also, everything seemed to working fine. Then by chance I right-clicked My Computer and clicked Properties to view basic information about my computer. Then I saw it! My memory was listed as being 16.0 GB's, when in reality I only run 2 GB's!!!

I immediately called Microsoft but they have been unable to fix the problem. They are supposed to be contacting me on Monday. Also, since this is like the third time I have installed Vista Basic x64 and SP1 on a board, I decided to do things differently right after I installed Vista.

Instead of blindly just installing it right away after installing Vista (I had previously downloaded it manually, so I had the application on hand) I started checking into why SP1 was not AVAILABLE for me on Windows Update. Turns out it's because WU can detect when there may be incompatibilities with one of your drivers. So it's not offered for you as a download until you solve those driver issues, though it will not tell exactly which driver is causing a problem.

Microsoft does have a list of known driver incompatibility issues and my Creative Labs Audigy SE is on there, but I have been unable to find an updated driver for that, or at least one that works. I did find a site with some supposedly Vista SP1 drivers for Creative designed by some guy in Brazil, but they did not fix the problem. They were also not signed. Here's that site:

http://www.vista4beginners.com/Windows-Vista-SP1-Drivers-Creative-sound-cards

But the big blow to all of this happened yesterday, when I called MSI again and told my problem to one of their techs. This time I asked him if it was not just Vista compatible, but Vista x64 compatible. He said no it wasn't, just Vista Basic X32 compatible. I wish I would have known that when all of this started a month ago!

So there's another possible issue right there. The other fun little tidbit I found out about my system came from a post where the moderator suggested I download and run this AMD diagnostic tool. It apparently will tell you, right away, whether your processor supports Hyper-V technology, which from what little I can understand of it, is a hypervisor based virtualization system for x64 systems.

I'm still not sure what that all means , but apparently it may not be helping my SP1 situation, let alone even running Vista x64. So at this point your saying "wow, Vista Basic x64 shouldn't even be running with all of those knocks you have against it". But you what's just simply amazing? It actually does run pretty darn good, with hardly a glitch, except of course for that misreading of the RAM thing.

It's still not as fast as XP, but it's not bad. So now I'm asking myself, what's going on? Am I defying the laws of computing here. According to the facts, Vista shouldn't be running at all, but it does, so, right now, I'm not complaining. I am still debating what to do next though and I'm still trying to make it run as fast as possible while I am running it on my machine. In fact I spent all day yesterday disabling unwanted services and scheduled tasks, tweaking this and that etc. And I'm not through yet.

Also, I had mentioned in my first post about running one of those DriverAgent type of programs, to see if that might also boost my chances of fixing the SP1 problem or and speeding up Vista. One person responded that he didn't trust many of them, some of which apparently are made by the same company. He did recommend Radarsync Free. But I tried that and couldn't get it to work right.

So, my next plan is to run DriverUpdater Pro by XPC Tools, which I had bought awhile back but have never run it. I did run a trial of their latest version the other day, just out of curiosity. Amazingly it showed all kinds of outdated drivers and even one for my Creative sound card. Though where they find these drivers is unknown to me. I found nothing on the Creative web site.

I also forgot to mention that one of the interesting things about that driver scan was that it found many of my VIA system devices out of date. And I wasn't even AWARE that you needed drivers for those. Besides, when I looked in Device Manager everything seemed fine. I'm still a little leary of this program, but I'm going to set a restore point before I do anything.

So that's it. My update to my SP1 Mind Boggler story. For what it's worth, I am really taking all of this in stride and if things suddenly get worse or I decide that I just don't want to spend the rest of my life worrying whether Vista x64 will keep running on my rig, I can always GO back to XP x64, which I've been told by the MSI brainiacs, that it will work. At least I think that's what they mumbled to me on the phone.

I am also more curious than ever now about running Linux. I know very little about it and doubt that I am going to experiment with it right now, but it is an option. First I want to do some homework on it. And of course I have to call back MSI, again, to see if Linux x64 will run on my system. Many people have also suggested that I dual boot, with a Windows flavor of my choice and Linux. But for some reason, I've never been really into dual-booting.

Now your up to date on the wonderful world of Microsoft and Vista and x64 and the term of the decade, "compatability".

Comments are definitely welcome

Solve : Windows Vista Home Premium: Will Not Power Down Computer?

If you don't need more than that then you can save everything on one CD. I don't know what the capacity of a DVD is but I know it is very great. If you want to upgrade to Vista you need a DVD drive because the install disc is a DVD-ROM. I recently upgraded to a DVD drive because I wanted to upgrade to Vista. That sounds like ripping to me.Superdave,

If this is something illegal, then I wont do it. I did purchase the cassets many years ago and want to be able to play them using a DVD. I got the information from the Kim Komando site. It takes up 101 MB of disk space.

Another is MSDN Library for Visual STUDIO .NET 2003 which takes up 1.75 GB. I'm using Visual Basic 2008 now and I've uninstalled Visual Basic .NET 2003 so I can't use the library even if I wanted to.

I have a 149 Gig hard drive and 125 Gig of free space but I'd still like to be able to get rid of those programs that I don't want. What Operating System?

Can you do it in Safe Mode?ahh, the beauty of the MSI install engine sometimes.

I BELIEVE the method to use would be to simply delete the relevant folders, and then use some kind of MSI cleanup utility.Windows Installer CleanUp Utility Quote from: evilfantasy on July 04, 2008, 09:36:54 PM

Windows Installer CleanUp Utility

Interesting.....I solved the problem of uninstalling unwanted programs by doing a clean install of Windows Vista. Everything that I didn't want in XP went BYE bye as well as everything I did want. Had to reinstall a good number of things.

I was having problems with Visual Basic 2008 Express in Vista. The problems didn't occur in XP. Someone told me it's better to do a clean install of Vista if you can so that's why I did it. The problems in Visual Basic 2008 didn't go away. Some screens in my VB2008 app run much much slower than they did in XP and I can't get into the designer.

Programming, working with computers and life is never ending ever new problems. Learn to enjoy problem solving then you can enjoy all of it.

I came across this recently though I don't need it now.
http://www.perfectuninstaller.com/index.php
Revo is free. www.revouninstaller.comWindows Installer Cleanup Utility is nice program.

Micrsoft says:
Quote
The Windows Installer CleanUp Utility does not perform the following functions: • Remove Windows Installer
• Remove files of any programs that are installed by Windows Installer, such as Microsoft Office 2003
The Windows Installer CleanUp Utility does perform the following functions: • Provides a dialog box in which you can select one or more programs that were installed by Windows Installer

To do this, select the programs that you want in the Installed Products list in the Windows Installer CleanUp dialog box. After you make this selection, the utility removes only the Windows Installer configuration information that is related to those programs.
• Removes the files and registry settings that make up the Windows Installer configuration information for programs that you select

Which basically means same as uninstalling because program will no longer run once removed from the cleanup utility list.

But you already reinstalled windows, so it's all good I guess
