Can anyone please help as I tried to google this error and it seems that it's done by ANYTHING, and does this error exist in windows XP ?If it's the same error message and the same file cited (Pro Evolution Soccer), you did not erase your hd.It happens with all the games, not just PES, actually happens when I try to install some software sometimes it's just annoying, and trust me the HD didn't have 1KB of data I erased it completely using a floppy disk and some software

I tried everything please... I just don't know how to fix this but I'm starting to get worried because it MIGHT be related to my hardwareAfter reinstalling the OS did you install all drivers starting with the chipset driver?Doesn't windows 7 install them automatically ?? even my GFX card is installed and all are updated

I've seen somewhere that this could be cause by my RAM, so how can I make sure if it is ?? and from your experience do you think it could have something to do with it ? Quote from: Enzan on NOVEMBER 25, 2010, 05:25:58 PM

and does this error exist in windows XP ?

Of course it does... remember this?

That was caused by the exact same thing.

It's possible it's caused by memory issues; One way to test would be to use the built in windows memory test (I believe it's in the boot menu you get if you press F8 during boot on windows 7)

A more exhaustive check can be done with memtest: http://www.memtest86.com/

However, before you do either, bear the following in mind; if this only occurs with Pro Evolution Soccer (pes2011) and not with any other program, it's highly unlikely to be a memory problem. You'd be getting the errors with nearly every single program; explorer, word (if you use it) your browser, everything. So unless that is the case, it's more likely to be a problem with the game itself, rather then a hardware ISSUE. This goes equally for drivers;unless you are getting the errors across the board with any number of programs (and not just the one) it's unlikely to be a driver problem.

First thing I'd suggest is that you see if there are any patches or updates for the game itself, they often address these issues.Nah happens with medal of honor, PES 2011, PES 2009, maplestory (YES I play it lol ) and once when I tried to install winrar O_o

Well the last question please, I don't have a program to burn memtest86 as a bootable CD, can you recommend any free software to do so please ?

Edit

And of course thanks for your help Allan and BC Ok so I tested it finally and I found lots of errors but I can't understand it, there was like 151errors in the first 100% and one highlighted with red, should I throw my ram into the garbage yet ?Yep. Quote from: Enzan on November 25, 2010, 06:43:31 PM
Doesn't windows 7 install them automatically ??
NoSo I just installed a new RAM, removed my old one and guess what, the error still exists, what should I do because I'm 100% desperate now Quote from: Allan on November 25, 2010, 06:00:09 PM
After reinstalling the OS did you install all drivers starting with the chipset driver?
No, do you know any free program that can tell me which drivers do I need to update ?? because all are installedDid you install the chipset driver after formatting and reinstalling the OS?

Open device manager. Are there any yellow exclamation marks?Nope, everything is installed, could it be because when I changed my RAM it left something corrupt in the system ?

I found a newer chipset driver available, I'll restart now (after I installed it) and let you know if the error goes away

Nope, error is still here, and I'm gonna suicide (Probably)

Solve : So I did something stupid and WER is a pain in the... (Long story)?

Answer»

Hi Y'all!

Long story so get ready... sorry...

So I did some stupid stuff with Unlocker, (If you'd like to call this stupid or not!!!)

Here's my issue.

I play GTA IV, and some other games which I did mods to them so they can become unstable at times, but every now and then when one of my games CRASH I get plagued with the 'Application has stopped WORKING' message.

But I'm serious here, every time, even in the middle of playing when the game   was fine, the message would pop up: Gta iv has stopped working.

So   I alt+tab a bit until I find my cursor, MINIMIZE the minimum error and   move on. The game crashes from excess memory hogging, and runs out of   memory.

I click 'Close application', 5 seconds later, another 'Grand Theft Auto IV has stopped working' message appears.
I close that out. 5 seconds later, 2 more windows appear, Gtaiv.exe has stopped working etc..

It's a total pain, so like described, I deleted them.

As a workaround, I finally just got SICK AND TIRED of the errors and I used UNLOCKER and deleted the wer.dll and werfault.exe files. Problem fixed!

After messing around with 'Unlock All' 'Unlock' and 'Kill Process' on each svchost.exe or whatever was occupying those files, I finally got that stupid wer fault service to go bye-bye.

But what I didn't know is that Windows is very sensitive of it's files... one file 'needed' or critical to the system (That's not even critical, from what I know) and poof!

Anyways,
After that, Explorer.exe suddenly crashed on me, it (Somehow!) reverted to windows 98 style!!! *censored*...

So then after I let svchost.exe and all restart after moving those files to a special folder in my home folder called 'Backed Up', the Start Menu turned black, as if it was activating Aero but nothing happend.
And I mean Pitch BLACK. All icons and start button were there, just the background color of it was PITCH BLACK, No glass theme or anything.

So out of being scared I might have scarred my Windows and thinking somehow those files were important, I quickly restored them back into the fiery depths of System32 back where they belong. I logged off and logged back on again, and got a report that my 'Event Log' service or whatever couldn't be started, and events will not be logged.

Files I've moved to the 'Backed Up' Folder (basically files removed from System32):

  • SearchIndexer.exe
  • SearchProtocolHost.exe
  • wer.dll
  • WerFault.exe
Sorry about the whole long story and all, but my main question to this is: Is it safe to delete/move files that are mainly un-needed and cluttering my space from system32? I know it seems obvious not to mess around in system32 as it contains very important files, which, if accidentally selecting the wrong file and removing it, thus, leaving the system inoperable, requiring me to get my Linux booted up again. (I don't essentially like having to restore files using my Dual-Booted Linux)

So thank you for the information, I know these files are really annoying, but I feel I want to just TURN OFF that stupid Windows Error dialog in Seven, it's actually more annoying than Windows XP's was... Ah, Xp, how I miss your presence so...

Anyways, so yeah that's about it. If you have any questions, please ask! I'm willing to answer.

Thanks! Yes. this was very stupid.

First off, deleting WER.DLL and werfault is probably, quite literally, one of the top ten dumbest things that a person that claims to be experienced can do- not counting best buy employees, but that goes without saying.

werfault reports errors. What you did was basically shoot the messenger.

Additionally, take a wild guess what PROVIDES themes. A service. guess what hosts services? svchost.exe. Any lights spark up yet?

You don't "Turn off the error" dialog. what is that even supposed to mean. Do you prefer the application to simply disappear with no rhyme or reason? because it still crashes. You don't prevent bank robberies by setting banks on fire.

I love this part:

Quote
thinking somehow those files were important,
Brilliant deductive reasoning. Hmm, System files are important for the system! It's an epiphany!

Quote

Files I've moved to the 'Backed Up' Folder (basically files removed from System32):

    * SearchIndexer.exe
    * SearchProtocolHost.exe
    * wer.dll
    * WerFault.exe
"I'm moving system files which I just discovered are important, golly, do you think that might be causing these problems that started when I began messing about with them?"

Also, can you stop putting "reasons" that you "know" that make no sense? Programs don't crash from excess memory hogging. That doesn't even make sense. One thing you might consider- just- you know, give it a thought, is instead of screwing around with the important system files that are reporting the error your GAME is causing you instead figure out why your game is crashing.

Fetch me my violin!

Nice!

So... do you want to know how to fix it or were you just wanting to entertain us with your story?

No I'm not kidding!

My GTA IV still crashes for no reason, it's not all for story.

Here's what's going on. My CPU and the game both stress enough, after for some reason the game lags more and more and FINALLY stops working, why do you think it does that? I'm not sure I seriously keep thinking that it has something to do with too much system resources being used... I really don't know!!

Does anybody know? Come on someone please help

Virtuo-Log:

  • Starts GTAIV.
  • Plays game.
  • Game lags more after so many cars and vehicles on the road like traffic.
  • I try to make a Enemy + Attacking Ped with Drive-By Gun with C++ / Lua Game Trainer Script
  • Game Freezes
  • Game crashes (Shows ' Grand Theft Auto IV has stopped working ' Dialog.)
I don't know what to do. Why does this happen? Can anybody tell me what the heck is happening?

Oh and I'll try to get a FULL error report of this application error thing as soon as possible.

By the way, WINDOWS 7 Error reporting dialog really doesn't report much information AT ALL as to what the cause would be, very basic information. No real data like Mac OS X or such would give if an application faulted. Like the Mac OS X 'application has quit unexpectedly dialog' the 'Report' section provides more than enough information for a monkey to figure out here.

I'll be done with this case, does anybody know how I can get a full-memory dump or alot of data about an application I can use for debug-reporting here? Come on, anybody? There's got to be something. :/ Otherwise I'll just keep sending Null reports to Microsoft which won't solve a Problem at all!

What is BEX module supposed to be anyways, I mean HUH!? How the heck will that solve my GTA 4 crashes?!

Anyways, done ranting..

Thanks. I hope someone can help me please.  http://www.msteched.com/2010/NorthAmerica/WCL315 Quote from: BC_Programmer on December 25, 2010, 01:15:48 PM

A good bit through I believe it tells you how to get rid of the dialog, or at least to get the Dump file, which you seem to think you can actually use (I find that deliciously absurd).

I mean, I could just tell you, but that would make you discover how useless it is too quickly.

you must seriously be joking. You really can't figure this out yourself? You installed a game mod, and when you go to do something with that mod the game crashes... and you think it's a "resource allocation problem" or something? seriously? Uninstall the modifications! Does the same thing occur?

This is like trying to teach sign language to a monkey with no arms. Quote from: BC_Programmer on December 25, 2010, 01:31:29 PM

I'm only saying it does this when the game lags, if the game is in a 'safe spot' (where it doesn't lag as much, like an indoor location) the game works just fine in doing the same action... although if it lags too much it crashes. Gee I wonder why!?

And sometimes the game crashes at all for no reason, even without mods.

I am running patch 1.0.0.3 since this is the only last version which allows mods (The C++/LUA game trainers) unless I want to patch xlive.dll in my system32 directory, which I think I would rather not do that.

Solve : User account keeps logging off??

Answer»

I've just created a new "standard user" account for myself for work-only. I created it following the usual steps in Vista "User Accounts." Once I'd created it I logged off. Then I was left with the welcoming screen and my accounts (two admin and one standard "work" account.) When I clicked on the new account it started loading and then said "logging off." I tried a few times and no change. It won't let me access it. The other two accounts work perfectly fine.

How do I fix this?

Any help would be APPRECIATED. I NEED access to this account PRETTY promptly. Try logging in as an admin / delete the standard user account and recreate another. Could be that account is corrupted.

Alan <><  Thanks - I tried that and I still have the same problem.

It did say "preparing desktop" and then it just logged me off again. This is from http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929825/en-us

Create a system restore point before you try this.

When you try to log on to a Windows Vista-based computer by using an account that does not have administrative permissions, you briefly receive a "Welcome" message, and then you receive a "Logging off" message.
This issue occurs if the Userinit key in the Windows registry has been modified.

1. Log on to the computer as an administrator or by using an account that has administrative permissions.
2. Start Registry Editor. To do this, click Start, type regedit in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER.
3. Click Continue.
4. Locate and then click the following registry key:
     HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon
5. In the right pane, right-click Userinit, and then click Modify.
6. In the Value data box, type hard_disk:\Windows\System32\userinit.exe, and then click OK.
Note The hard_disk placeholder refers to the disk on which Windows Vista is installed.
7. Close Registry Editor.
my computer is doing the same thing. it logs on for about 2 seconds then immediately logs off, the only problem is i only have the administrative account so i CANT GET into my computer at all.. any advice?

Hi.
I think georgiegirl is confusing operating system with I.E, flash player will not run on 64 bit I.E at least it wouldn’t last time I tried it.
But if you have both versions of I.E and switch back to the OLDER version flash player will work.
Georgiegirl

If you look on start/all programs I think you will see internet explorer listed twice ONE is the older version (which I mostly use) and the other has (64 bit) next to it.

The 64 bit version doesn’t support adobe flash player as far as I know.
Open a Command Prompt window, and type: wmic os get osarchitecture then press ENTEROr do it the easy way. Right-click on My Computer and click on "properties"There is no need to check anything. They are clearly running a x64 system:

Quote
.It was running using a 64 bit operating system

Considering ST has established that they didn't change their operating system, then it's safe to say they are still running it.

Both x64 and x86 windows systems have a C:\windows\system32 folder. with windows x64, C:\windows\system32 is REALLY a folder that contains the 64-bit operating system files; C:\windows\syswow64\ contains the 32-bit operating system files. When a 32-bit program is running, and accesses C:\windows\system32, it instead accesses C:\windows\syswow64. More info in redirection here. However, That's all rather pedantic in this context.

Now, regarding flash, as has been noted, Flash is a 32-bit component- what this means is that while it will run fine on 64-bit windows, it cannot be used by 64-bit programs (a 64-bit program cannot load and use a 32-bit component, just as a 32-bit program cannot load and use a 64-bit component). For the time being, just remember that Flash can only be used by 32-bit browsers, at least until Flash finishes the 64-bit version.

When you visit a page requiring flash, and it's not installed, it will show the "get flashplayer" link, or something similar. following that link in a x64 browser takes you to a page that says:

Quote
Flash Player 10.1 is not currently available for your 64-bit web browser.
64-bit Windows and Mac computers include 32-bit browsers that are compatible with Flash Player. For instructions on how to open a compatible browser and run Flash Player, see Flash Player on 64-bit operating systems.

Underneath that, is a new box I haven't SEEN before, must be new:

Quote
Download a preview release of Flash Player that includes full support for 64-bit web browsers on Windows, Mac and Linux computers from Adobe Labs.

the link in that second quote takes us to http://labs.adobe.com/downloads/flashplayer10.html, where you can in fact download flash player versions that support Internet Explorer x64 as well as all other browsers.

So, it seems you have two options  for viewing flash content: use a 64-bit browser and download a 64-bit plugin, or use a 32-bit browser and download the 32-bit plugin, or, of course, you can do both.

Anyways, answering the original question of switching back to the 64-bit version:

Internet Explorer comes in two editions on 64-bit windows. Press the start orb, and enter "Internet Explorer" in the search bar, and the two will APPEAR; the "Internet Explorer (64-bit)" item is the 64-bit version, and the one that merely says "Internet Explorer" is 32-bit.

Taskbar thumbnails. I used to be able to disable them, I have several tweaker APPS that do that, but none of them work any more (changed by a Windows update?) Also the gpedit.msc method linked above didn't work, nor did the registry EDIT. Apparently they are part of Aero and if you don't like them you have to disable Aero. What you can do (I have just tried this and it worked) is to create / edit this registry key

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced\ExtendedUIHoverTime

it's a DWORD and is the hover delay in milliseconds. Mine was set to 100 already. Choose decimal and set it to a ridiculously high value (I have 120000 which is a 2 minute hover before the thumbnail becoms visible).
Update...
I found an app called 7 Taskbar Tweaker that, among other things, can enable and disable taskbar thumbnails; I don't even have to log off to see the change.

I have a Toshiba Satellite P500; very nice laptop, runs great, no problems, would recommend to anyone.  However, recently it's been running a bit slow on me.  Startup takes FOREVER now.  It'll sit there and give me the loading cursor, I can't click anything untill it goes away.  When i can FINALLY click on, lets say a gadget, i then have to wait to open a program in the Start bar.  It's terribly annoying, normally as soon as i log in i can start opening things within a few seconds no problem, but now i'm waiting minutes.  Then if i have multiple applications open (lets say WORD and Chrome) as a switch between the two, my typing lags.  Like it still types but it takes AWHILE for it to show up (i've adapted by just start typing and hope i don't make a mistake).  The thing is, it's just MY account that does it.  My dad also using my laptop and he hasn't complained of anything.  I'll get on his account and every thing goes as it should, which really pisses me off.  If there's no solution for this, i think i'll make a new account and move into it, but i wanna see if i can't save some time....

Anyways, i have tried restoring my system to an earlier point when it wasn't doing this (started like the 22nd), no luck.  I cleaned out my HDD cuz it was getting full in hopes that it might help, nope.  I opened the task manager and ENDED any unimportant processes, that didn't help at all.  I have a CPU meter on my desktop and its not showing like severe overload that would slow my system.  And it has been freezing up on my alot lately, like can't move the mouse or anything, which it did occasionally before but never this bad.

And if i do need a new account, is there an easy way to do so, so that i don't have to GO through and change all the settings and find and transfer all my saved games and stuff.

Thanks

Looks like your HDD is going bad.

Solve : Windows Defender or Windows Security Essentials?

Answer»

Windows Defender I have ran this program a long time and it never seems to catch any spy-ware or do anything as FAR as I can see. And from what I read it's like built into windows so you can't uninstall it. I  know you can stop it from running but trying to delete it is another story. I've been told that if I downloaded Windows Security Essentials that would stop Windows Defender from running but won't uninstall it just stops it from running. Before I do anything I would like to know:

Which is better to have on your computer Windows Defender or Windows Essentials or nether one

I appreciate everyone advice thank you   1) I think Defender is a waste of time and resources. I always disable it.
2) You MUST have an anti virus utility active at all times. Defender is not an av and Essentials, to the best of my knowledge, does include an av. Do you have an av?
3) A much better malware tool than Defender is MalwareBytesi think Windows Security Essentials is very good and also one of the malware experts always recommends it

About Microsoft Security Essentials

Microsoft Security Essentials provides real-time protection for your home PC that guards against viruses, spyware, and other MALICIOUS software.

Microsoft Security Essentials is a free* download from Microsoft that is simple to install, easy to use, and always kept up to date so you can be assured your PC is PROTECTED by the latest technology. It’s easy to tell if your PC is secure — when you’re green, you’re good. It’s that simple.

Microsoft Security Essentials runs quietly and efficiently in the background so that you are free to use your Windows-based PC the way you want—without interruptions or long computer wait times.

=======================
quote pc adviser;

Microsoft Security Essentials shows much promise. In our tests it was decent at detecting malware, PARTICULARLY in proactive tests that simulate the handling of new, unknown malware. It took fourth place in our rankings of free antivirus software. The main drawback of the tool, due to launch on September 29, seemed to be its slow scan speed.

One thing we hope Microsoft will improve is Microsoft Security Essentials' relatively poky scan speed. It was the slowest in our on-access scan test, which judges how quickly scans run when you copy, open, or save files. The app's Dynamic Signature Service may account for some of that: When Security Essentials sees a potentially malicious file that doesn't match known malware, it contacts Microsoft servers for additional analysis. The feature likely affords greater protection owing to the use of the latest signatures online, but it may also introduce some delay if Security Essentials has to wait for a response

Microsoft Security Essentials put up no false positives (flagging of benign software), and it got a near-perfect score overall in detecting and cleaning rootkits and malware infections. It detected and disabled every infection, and although it left behind several changes to the Registry and other areas (as every free app did), they couldn't cause further harm

========================

From Wikipedia

Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE) is a free antivirus software product created by Microsoft that provides protection against different types of malware such as computer virus, spyware, rootkits and trojan horses for Windows XP (x86[4]), Windows Vista, and Windows 7 (both x86 and x64).[4][5] Microsoft Security Essentials REPLACES Windows Live OneCare, a commercial subscription-based antivirus service and the free Windows Defender, which only protected users from adware and spyware.[6] Unlike Microsoft Forefront family of enterprise-oriented security products, Microsoft Security Essentials is geared for consumer use.

Well if you have Norton 360 installed you do not need MS Essentials, nor do you ever want two AV's resident at the same time.ESET NOD 32.

Solve : Random Lockups...?

Answer»

Okay...I was previously running a (unbeknown to me) cracked copy of Windows 7 Ultimate on my computer...had had a friend custom build it for me and that was put on there.

The computer, after about six months, began to behave very erratic-like. It would freeze me out of doing any web based download/installer, and FLASH Player and such uninstalled themselves. I ran a virus scan (from 3 different programs) and they all came back clean. I figured it was that I was running a cracked copy. So I purchased and installed a clean copy of Windows Vista Home Premium SP1. Also did a full partition deletion before I did this, to kinda give the computer a fresh SLATE to fix whatever the issue was.

Now, it will randomly freeze every five minutes to an hour like clockwork...any ideas as to whats going on?Now, correct me if I'm wrong...but I think I may have found the issue..

Would incorrect/outdated drivers for my Motherboard and Power Supply cause lockups like that?PSU does not use Drivers and YES...drivers would cause what you described.... Quote from: cj82989 on December 04, 2010, 08:52:13 AM

Oh, right ... you just "didn't notice" that you hadn't paid for Windows 7 Ultimate? Is your arithmetic not too good? Or you thought that you had paid for full retail? In that case you would have had a Microsoft disk and sticker.

Possibly some kind of hardware problem, such as RAM failure... maybe your "friend" gypped you on the RAM as well as the OS? You could try running Memtest. Sounds like you may need to CALL your "friend".

1. make sure your NIC driver does not have Microsoft’s driver as this CAUSES many problems, download and install the latest driver from manufacturer

2. if you are using Symantec antivirus 10.2 then upgrade it to Symantec11 endpoint protection, or download and install the latest client if you using any other antivirus software

3. make sure your network switches are configured correctly, if you are not sure, then bring in a pro to have a look

4. make sure you got all the patched and service packs on your build

If that does not work, then do this:

Quote
Ok this worked for me. Log on using a DIFERENT account. run REGEDIT (this edits the registry). Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList there is a list of sids here. These security IDs are what links the useraccount to the profile. Each user account has a sid.  Click on the sids and you will see a ProfileImagePath key in the right hand key. Use this to figure out the effected profile. It will say something like %SystemDrive%\Users\username write this down you will need it later. Once you know which user account the sid is for.Delete the Sid from the profile list hive (just right click on it and hit delete). Now restart and log on as the user you couldn't log in as. It will create a new profile all your settings will be gone. Log off and log back on as a local admin. Go back to regedit and navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList again. This was repopulated when you logged back on. Now SELECT profile image path and set it back to what it was originally. See if you can log back in as the user.

Solve : File Search Windows 7?

Answer»

I don't know about you but I don't care to much of windows 7 file search. I liked XP much better. I was wondering if I could delete windows 7 file search and download windows XP. Windows XP is a lot faster and I even MISS the dog. He kinda grew on me.

So your gonna dump Win7 just to get the Dog back ? ?

OK.I Still can't seem to find what I need sometimes, nor have it presented to me the way I prefer.

Personally, I preferred the Windows 98 "Find files" applet, despite all it's flaws. So, I simply created my own little version of the program, about a year ago, that I still have on my quick LAUNCH bar, and use occasionally when the win7 search just doesn't have the granularity I need. It doesn't have the dog (being that I based it on the older win98 interface in many ways), but it is more powerful (or, should I say, the power is easier to get at; with win7 search you can search for any number of things but you need to know some goofy incantations for the search bar that  I personally cannot be bothered to learn just yet).

This is the program installer download for the curious:

http://bc-programming.com/downloads/downloads.php?DlID=1

Another program to try (I haven't tried it myself, it just came up in a google) is

Ultrafilesearch.

And there are a number of Desktop Search programs reviewed here: http://www.techsupportalert.com/best-free-desktop-search-utility.htm
I have been using a freeware search utility called Agent Ransack, which provides more of what I want in a search utility than Windows 7's built-in offering.

But what I want is exactly what I had on XP for a file search. I liked how easy and how fast it was. Solve : You Tube Videos and Sacing Them?

Hello! This is my first time posting. I SHALL get on with my question.
I was watching movies on my VLC Media Player, and when I clicked "Open FILE" it DIRECTED me to a You Tube Video I watched repeatedly about half a year ago. I was ecstatic because I wanted to put it into a different file where I can locate it easier. UNFORTUNATELY, I forgot the file location except for the FACT that it was in AppData.
Does anyone know a possible location? Thank you!!

Solve : Transferring Music Files To New Windows 7 64 Bit?

Answer»

I just purchased a new computer. I wanted to know, would it be wise to burn the mp3 format to a DISC as a data file, and not a mp3 audio file?? Which would be better for someone that has a large digital music collection??If you are gonna USED a CD-R to burn mp3 formats, its better if its recorded as mp3 audio FILES. You can used them to play on DVD players or on CD/DVD drives at the same time a temporary back-up. If its a DVD-+R which has bigger data capacity, then its has to be a data file for your music files. If it's truly a large collection, in my opinion the easiest methods would be to either use an imaging program to copy and restore the drive or folder with the music, to use a backup program to do the same, or to simply connect or network the two COMPUTERS and transfer the music directly. Can you recommend a imaging software to use. That sounds more interesting and easier. I could pick it up today. Quote from: tboy34 on December 08, 2010, 07:26:47 AM

Solve : Duplicate Files?

Answer»

I am confused as to which files to delete. I have found NO information about the subject that ANSWERS my problem, which is this. If I have a lot of duplicate FILE to delete, should I delete ALL but one of each group of duplicate files or do I need to keep 1 of them each for each
program that uses the particular file. Will a program find its file, where ever it is, or is it possible for 2 programs to USE the 1 file at the same time.If not, how will I know which program needs a copy of the file saving? Why delete any?Do they not take up room and slow the PC down a tad? It seems a handful of folk have written programs to do just that ( clear up duplicate files in order to speed up the PC ).Unless your hard drive is small or very low on space, duplicate files neither slow down anything nor need to be deleted. And to add to Allans comments ...removing them generally will cause havoc...Especially since Vista and 7 (not so in XP) keep a plenty of system file backups in several different locations.
Very handy, when some system file(s) get corrupted.Additionally, some "duplicates" aren't duplicates at all, but hard-links to the same files; this is especially true with the various junctions/folder hard-links in later windows versions.

Quote from: wahl on December 11, 2010, 09:20:33 AM
I'm using YahooMail and wish to have defined as my default email program ...
Well, the basic problem here is that YahooMail is not a program.  It's really just a website and you view it through your web browser.  And, web browsers are not "email programs", they are programs used to display web pages.

Examples of true email programs are Outlook Express, Outlook (usually BUNDLED with Microsoft Office), Windows Mail (comes with Windows Vista), and Windows Live Mail.  And then, there are some non-Microsoft email programs such as Thunderbird (from Mozilla).  Again, these are true email programs, not a web browser.

So, if there's a way to get YahooMail to work the way you want, I'm not aware of it.  I BELIEVE you'll need to copy and paste to forward a page or link.  Just copy the link to the web page into your email message.  ThunderBird would be my CHOICE...from the fine folks that bring us Firefox.

I put the Windows 7 installation DVD in the drive and booted up the computer.  I get a screen with 2 choices.
F2 Bios SETTINGS and F8

When I hit F2 Bios setup -  I get a black screen with the MESSAGE 'no active partition found'

I hit F8 and set the boot device to be the cd\dvd drive and when it tries to boot off the windows 7 dvd, I get a BOOT FAILURE message.

what do I have to do to install windows 7 on this machine?change the boot order so it boots to the DVD instead of trying to boot to the hard disk.I did change the boot order to boot off the DVD.  I just get an error that SAYS 'boot failure'

The DVD CONTAINS the files and folders that I extracted from the ISO file that I downloaded from MSDN ( Windows 7 Home premium edition (64bit) . Quote from: itsonlyme4 on December 02, 2010, 05:45:52 AM

The DVD contains the files and folders that I extracted from the ISO file that I downloaded from MSDN ( Windows 7 Home premium edition (64bit) .

you have you burn the ISO directly to the disk. you can't extract the files, and then burn the files.I did not know.   I burned the ISO file directly to a DVD and tried to boot up off of it.   I get a black screen with the error ' no active partition'try ImgBurn free

If you're not sure how to burn the disk there is a guide here

Solve : Wallpapers?

Hi there!  I RUN Win7, does anyone know where the WALLPAPERS are?     I change mine from time to time, but they are not being saved?   I get a BLACK screen when I boot up, which is one of the wallpapers installed, but not my choice??      Enough with the emoticons!if you haven't properly activated I believe the "REVERT wallpaper to black" is a friendly way to nudge you to do so after the 30's days expire.

Wallpapers normally can be changed in the DIALOG that displays when you right-click the desktop and select "personalize" and then the left-most option at the bottom of the resulting window is "Background".Also...if you have created a custom wallpaper from say some photos or whatnot you need to name that wallpaper prior to changing it and Windows saves it automatically to the default location...Thank you here guys, you are civilised ....I have found the answer.     I do MAKE wallpaers myself and in 'documents' there is a 'sample' folder with some pics already there.   One only needs to copy any pictures required into that folder and it can be installed and saved from the deskdop dropdown....GOOD EH!

Me too. I love changing wallpapers.
yeah right you too can make your own even your profile pic can be made too. Quote from: GLOOPS on November 30, 2010, 09:07:16 AM

Solve : Is Windows 7 better than XP??

I really want to check whether Windows 7 is better than XP. Personally, I would like to use xp. How about you?If you like XP, by all MEANS use it.

I also didn't explicitly say "Windows 3.0" for the first one, Or the various DOS versions, because I didn't want to. I also didn't cover Mac OS versions, because I didn't want to (and also, Mac Classic is better then OSX in many ways IMO).

I didn't include Vista because I thought I had made my point. What was my point? That people ALWAYS complain about the new OS version, how they don't like it, how it's a "memory hog". For example, (Windows 95 was CALLED a "memory hog" for having a recommended RAM amount of 8MB); Windows 3.1 was given the same name for requiring about 2MB to do anything useful, and so on.

When People haven't the first clue about the history of the products they purchase, it tends to repeat itself.

Solve : Hibernate/Sleep not offered for Enable is Win 7?

I decided I wanted to take advantage of these power management tools but was surprised to find that I can't access them.

From the Start Button, the only options are Shut Down or Restart. Under the Power tab in Control Panel, the problem is the same; these options are not EVEN made available.

Any thoughts?

I'm not sure what those numbers relate to, but if you want to roll back drivers it can be done from within Device Manager.this may be of some help to you , it only took a SIMPLE search to find them for you , it was no trouble to help you out

if you want to search some more just search for ONE sp number at a time

they seem to be  drivers of some sort

In English speaking countries, we don't spell 'care' with a K. We do, however spell "know" with a k. IDK is a well known web abbreviation for "I don't know". Also we do not use an apostrophe before a plural s.

Solve : What happend to my Open-with? :(?

Answer»

Hi, I've been using Windows 7 x64 bit for a while now, I've been using AVG until something went wrong (can't remember, wanted me to update but couldn't) So I uninstalled that and INSTALLED Avast Antivirus on my PC.

Well, I really don't know, but for files that I'm supposed to right-click, and open-with for files that have multiple applications to open with, it isn't shown any more in my context menus!!  What happend to it?

Can anybody help me please?

I'm puzzled more than a puzzled geek can be.

I've checked the windows registry (despite having FACT I had NO IDEA what I'm looking for);
and found nothing I could help...

Can anybody help me on this one?

A .reg file or command I have to run?

A registry key perhaps maybe I need to execute??

Someone help me please!!! I just want my context menus back to normal, is that too hard to figure out? I mean surely you nerds out there are smarter than me, can't you give me a clue?? Sure I may be only experienced, but this puzzled me completely.

What should I LOOK for in the registry?
Do I need to add a custom registry key to re-enable something??

Did MICROSOFT Remove Open-with from Windows 7???

I seriously doubt they would do such a thing like remove Open-with FUNCTION from Windows like that... I mean how could they.. If not, then Alright I know now that this is probably a virus or something on my computer...

I just don't know, to be honest!! No clue whatsover... Anybody? Please?? It would be much, much help if someone could help me please... THANKS!!!!!!

Solve : Having trouble starting my computer?

Answer»

Hi there,

I don't KNOW if anyone can help me. Over the last week or so I have been having real problems getting my COMPUTER up and running and I don't understand why. I have an HP Pavillion a6325.uk, running Windows Vista Home Premium. Basically when I turn it on a variety of things might happen:
1. It will boot up and go right through to the desktop but then will freeze so I have to press the power button to reboot.
2. It will get to the blue HP start up screen and wont go any further.
3. Sometimes it will go to the black screen and ask if you want to go into safe mode or run system repair (or something like that), but then when you choose WHATEVER option it just freezes again.
4. Once or twice I have seen a blue screen but it flashes up so quickly I dont have a chance to write down the error message, the first part is driver_irql_.

Basically it just KEEPS freezing at VARIOUS different stages of start up and I have no idea why. Usually it eventually starts up after about 10 attempts at rebooting and stays on, but it is very frustrating and I don't want one day for it to not turn on at all.

I'm not a computer wizz, so if anyone has an idea of what is wrong and could talk me through trying to fix the problem I would be extremely grateful.

Many thanks

Emily

Solve : Laptop wont boot properly?

Answer»

Hi, I've got a Dell Inspiron 1545 running on Windows 7 (not SURE which one). I was working on it and it completely froze up about a week ago. After trying CTRL - ALT - DEL i was GIVEN a message to say that it wasn't responding and that i should switch the computer off manually. I did this and went to turn it back on but all it came up with was 'Windows is loading files' i left it to load however it was just repeating this same process over and over without any progress. I then tried doing a Diagnostics TEST where it kept telling me there was an error and then it would continue the text any longer. After this failed i tried to boot up from the Windows 7 disc that came with the laptop. First i tried the repair option, however the laptop sat there for about 4 hours on the same screen not doing anything. I then tried to reinstall Windows 7 and this wouldn't work either, the screen just said 'Windows is starting up' or something similar. I have not backed up my laptop and really don't want to loose what is on there however i realise i might. Most of all i would just like it working again as am in desperate need due to being at University. Can you get into SAFE mode? Repeatedly tap F8 as you boot. Choose safe mode from the list of OPTIONS.

If that doesn't work, boot to the windows disk and choose system restore from the list of recovery options.

Solve : Delete files in directory hierachy by size?

Answer»

Hi Guys

New here, but it seems you know your stuff :-).

I guess my question is valid for all Windows versions...

I have a large amount of files sorted in folders by category, now I need to delete files under a surtain size in all the folders, how do I do that in one sweep? The files are in one root folder and from there the folders gets deep.. (I've been looking at det DOS commands, but none seem to fit (only xcopy seems to be ABLETO do stuff with folders)).

Thanks a lot.

PoulIn this example, files of less than 1000 bytes will be deleted. Place in the root folder of the folder tree concerned. Try it and edit the REM out when you are ready to actually delete the file. It will not delete itself.

Code: [Select]echo off
for /f "delims=" %%F in ('dir /b /s /a-d ^| find /V "%~nx0"') do (
if %%~zF LSS 1000 (
echo deleting %%~dpnxF %%~zF bytes
REM del "%%~dpnxF"
)
)Hi

That looks great, but I need a little help; Where do I put this and how do I execute?

Thanks a lot!

PoulPerhaps this is a thing that you do not need to use very often and perhaps you would like to have some control over it manually. Instead of using a batch file, you can also do this manually by using the search function.
Using Windows EXPLORER, go to the folder where you have the oversize files. Then using the search feature to look for all files that are larger than a certain size. This is an advanced search feature. I've used it to find files that I no longer want in a certain folder if they are over a certain size. Once you get the results of the search, you can delete the files individually even though they are in different PARTS of the folder tree. Also, if you don't want to delete them, you could move them to another folder.
Just a suggestion. Works for me. Quote from: Poul on December 12, 2010, 05:16:04 PM

Solve : Recovery Disk Trouble?

Answer»

Hello all.  I have been having trouble using the recovery disk for my asus g72gx, FXX05.

I select the option to boot from disk in the bios, and it loads the disk at startup.  The screen that then comes up is gray, and the language preferences and the option of WHETHER to write over the whole hard DRIVE or one of the PARTITIONS is presented.

I originally tried the whole hard drive, as I don't need any of the data on it.   But no matter which option I PICK, at some percentage of the loading operation, where it says XX% complete, the process will stop and the screen will turn white and display ERROR in giant red letters.

I have GOOGLED around to try and find some solution, with no luck.  Does anybody have any suggestions?  All help is appreciated!Have you tried cleaning the disk?

Quote

I want to find the ntfs format command and copy it on the floppy

Why?
The windows disk can format.

Quote
I want to run these drives as raid 0
If you are using four disks, I would SUGGEST running them as RAID 5 if your motherboard supports it. RAID 0 is fast but it can be dangerous. If ONE of the drives fail, all of your data will be lost. RAID 5 PROVIDES parity. Does your board support RAID 5?

Quote

No. Hardware RAID is invisible to the operating system. Quote from: RHhideout on November 29, 2010, 08:00:58 AM

OK, and as you noted lower down, you want the windows 7 format command on a DOS floppy. Well, the problem here is that the format command that Windows is putting on the boot floppy is a DOS executable; the format.exe that Windows 7 has in C:\windows\system32 (and C:\windows\syswow64 in 64-bit systems as well) are Windows executables. If you were to copy said format command to a floppy and try to boot into DOS, all you'd get is a "this program cannot be run in DOS mode" error.

Additionally, the actual task of formatting is done by the file-system driver; in this case, the NTFS driver. However, no NTFS driver will be loaded to begin with on a DOS boot floppy. You can find expensive NTFS utilities that can be used from DOS but I believe that you are unnecessarily restricting your scope; why must you format the drive from DOS?

Exactly...
Sounds like it's not worth the effort to me....even though it could be done.
Booting to the OS CD you'ld be done by now...RAID or no RAID.

Solve : Blue Screen Error on New Hard Drive with new OS Installation?

Answer»

Hi, I RECENTLY replaced the hard drive in my boyfriends laptop, the hard drive was 100% healthy. I Installed a fresh COPY of Vista and everything was running swimmingly. I installed a few programmes but nothing sinister, ccleaner, firefox, nero, just the usual suspects. The laptop did loads of updating which was to be expecting considering the new installation of vista. But then I encountered a problem where every time I opened SOMETHING, like the web browser or even task manager, the programme would open for a few seconds and then close down when you went to click something. I rebooted in HOPE it would rectify it'self but upon restart encountered a blue screen error. I tried to reboot in safe mode, again encountering the blue screen error.

I tried F9 hoping to be given the startup repair options but that option was missing from the list, so I ran the vista disc and initialized startup repair from the disc. It recognised there were problems and told me it was attempting repairs. Once the startup repair and finished the laptop rebooted to another blue screen. I ran the vista disc again, ran the startup repair again. Once startup repair had run it told me this time that it could not repair the problem. I then tried system restore which failed on two occasions.

I ended up formatting the hard drive and installing another fresh copy of vista.

Everything appears to be ok again now. But I would like to get to the bottom of what happened to prevent it happening again. Luckily it was a new install of vista last time and I hadn't had chance to save anything important on there. I don't want it to happen again if I can help it.

The last change that was made to the computer before the blue screen would have been the installation of service pack 2. Would that have been the problem? Should I advoid installing it this time?

Many Thanks1) Did you install all drivers starting with the chipset driver?
2) You did not mention installing an anti virus utility. Did you?No I didn't install any drivers, except for when I first started it up on the previous vista installation I couldn't get an internet connection, I did install drivers then but STILL couldn't get it to work and ended up putting a different LAN card which worked right away. I thought that just installing the vista updates would update all the drivers?

I have got avast here, the paid for internet security version which I was about to install but didn't get round to last time. I installed that straight away this time! After formatting and installing the OS do the following immediately:

1) Install chipset driver (first), then drivers for all other cards (video, audio, etc) as required. You should download these drivers and save them to an off-disk medium before installing the OS so you are ready to go.

2) Install an Anti Virus Utility BEFORE GOING ONLINE

3) Then you can install all MS Updates and anything else you like.Windows Updates is the most innefficient method for obtaining Drivers.
Whenever you re-install all drivers are wiped out ...they need to be re-installed after the OS is done.

Granted many native drivers are included on a new install of Windows but as you are finding out most are generic in scope and may not run all devices properly.

Your best choice for drivers is and always will be the manuf. site...OK. Thanks guys. So the blue screen error would have been most likely to do with drivers? I think the only websites my boyfriend went on would have been probably facebook and email, and I would have gone on ccleaner and firefox websites to download their stuff. I very much doubt it was a virus.

It is an emachines laptop so would the best place to go for the drivers be their website? Or would it be Acer website? Or is there a 3rd party website I should use?
First of all, websites have very little to do with getting a virus (okay yes, there ARE malicious websites - but for the purpose of this post I'm assuming they are not a factor in this case). All you need to do is be connected to the internet and your system is exposed to MANY viruses - especially if you do not have a router or firewall. DO NOT GO ONLINE WITHOUT AN AV INSTALLED.

Second, without knowing the exact blue screen error there's no way to know what caused it.

Last, yes - go to the website of the system manufacturer for the chipset driver. If it's a laptop you should get ALL drivers there. If it's a desktop you can get the drivers for the video and sound cards from the websites of the card manufacturers.OK. Noted! Thanks for the advice guys. You're welcome.

Solve : ESC Key NOT functioning?

Answer»

I have a PROBLEM with my ESC key not working anymore, it is not the keyboard, it worked fine a couple of days ago, now it doesn't even function, I tried remapping the key, it still does not work with the new remapped key, anyone know a SOLUTION to this?

I know its definitely software related and not hardware, due to it not even working when the key was remapped to a different key!

OS: Windows 7 64-bit
The only way to know for sure that it is not the keyboard itself is to TRY a different keyboard. Quote

This confirms it's most likely the keyboard...Yep, it was the keyboard....
my OLD keyboard seems to work. Thanks for the update.

Solve : New Notebook with Windows 7 and Issues?

Answer»

Greetings!

I have an HP G72 series notebook given to me as a gift two weeks ago.  It was purchased at an Aaron's rental place and Aaron's has some stuff on it to track it, I guess.  Anyway, I can't reformat it as long as my friends who purchased it for me are paying for it.

It's a beautiful unit, but there are issues.  Was WONDERING if anyone might have some suggestions as to how I might resolve them.

The system:  Intel P6 100 2.00 GHz, 320 GB HDD, 6 GB DDR RAM, running Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit.  This is my first experience with an HP computer and also with 64 bit systems.

First thing, I uninstalled Norton's with the Norton Removal Tool and attempted to install AVG as I have a subscription to it and it's my favorite AV of all time; however, AVG won't install - error code 0xC0070643.  Contacted AVG 9 days ago and have gotten no help from them.  Now using the MSE that came with Windows, SpywareBlaster, and SuperAntiSpyware, paid version, and MalwareBytes. The only one in startup is MSE - - so the others don't start up unless I initiate them so there're no conflicts.

Secondly, the Alt+F4 keyboard command won't work.  Bummer.  Anyone know how to make it work?

Thirdly, today I discovered all the restore points had deleted since yesterday, with no command from me to do so.  I enlarged the disk space allowed for System Restore and set another point and so far it's still there.

Also, it seems to hang up a lot and does odd things like right now there's a little rectangle on the screen that usually shows up when I pass the cursor over the network icon on the taskbar - - it has the name of my network and says 'Internet Access' under it.  It's just sitting here just below center of the screen covering up anything behind it in any program I OPEN.  Annoying.  Often, the mouse cursor jumps around the page, causing me to type where I didn't want to type.  REALLY annoying!

Lastly, the computer I passed on to my husband when I got this one has only 3 GB of RAM but is so much faster than this one that I upgraded to 6 GB the day I got it (it came with 3).

I ran MSE and SuperAntiSpyware and they found nothing threatening, so I don't think there's any malicious software on it, other than, maybe the Aaron's stuff.  I installed MalwareByte's and it found nothing either.

I ran PCPitstop's OverDrive and the only thing it found wrong was that the computer needed defragging.  Installed Defraggler from Piriform and after running, it says the computer is still 10% fragged - - 2 files won't defrag:  pagefile and hiberfil.  They are both very large.  I turned off hibernation and am defragging now and plan to do the same with pagefile; however, I really don't think fragmentation is causing any of the problems

Anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks IMMENSELY!
S.You should contact Aaron's Rental Place about the issues. It may have been custom built with programs that may be CONFLICTING to the base programs included with the W7 operating system.

Norton is a tricky tool to get rid of. Check in the programs and features menu (in the control panel) and make sure that Norton and all of its files are completely gone.

As for your AVG issue, I'm attaching a link to their FORUM. This is a well known issue, hopefully there's a solution or WORKAROUND:

http://forums.avg.com/au-en/avg-free-forum?sec=thread&act=show&id=117715

As for the speed difference between the 2 computers of yours and your hubby's, it's not only based on memory. CPU (processor) is the key component. His, the one you pass on to him, may have a faster processor and/or multiple cores than the one that was given to you.

Solve : Vista freezes soon after startup (fresh installation)?

Answer»

I've tried just about everything i can think of to fix it but its a fresh install of vista and for some reason its freezing and ive run  the *censored* check, memory diag., swapped the mobo (identical mobo and processor) vid card and hard drive also played around with the ram as well but if anyone has a possible answer please let me know thanks! You need to explain the problem in detail. You also need to tell us about your system, why you installed the OS (new hd, problem that caused you to reformat, etc) and exactly HOW you installed the OS. well it started when i was having problems where if i installed my video drivers windows WOULD not load but it would in safe mode only (vista sp1) then i went and tried updating and installing sp2 the update COMPLETELY screwed up and now it wont load at all so i installed on to a new hd installing XP first then using my upgrade to vista and it freezes within the first 5 mins after startup and like ive said i tried a differend vid card, ran diagnostics on memory and the hard drive all checked out. the system is custom built. 2.2 core 2 duo, 4 gig gskill ram, 500gb seagate sata hd, 8800 gts geforce video card with windows vista sp1Wow...
Vista...then XP...then back to Vista.

You need to DLoad and collect the proper drivers for whatever OS you are installing...i had vista all set up on my old drive that completely screwed up i used xp to load vista onto my new hard drive all i have is an upgrade version of vista because i had a tight budget for when i built my COMPUTER. i had no problems with it for the 3 years i had the computer until it would not run with the video drivers in it then i ran all the UPDATES thats when my old hard drive screwed up and i installed fresh on a new drive.

Im trying to install Win7 on my new box, blank hd and im getting a popup stating that A required cd/dvd drive device driver is missing.

Microsoft support site says that my cd/dvd drive in incompatible with microsofts AHCI driver..then goes on to say that this can usually be resolved by switching AHCI MODE to IDE or ATA mode.

Problem is I CANT find where to do this in my Phoenix bios..can someone help??
guess i'll have to buy a new cd/dvd drive if i cant switch it..?

tis frustrating,any help is appreciated.

-merlinsomeone must know!~
help meh please..I'll put a good word in for you with Santa Please don't bump your thread. If someone can help it will be posted.Sounds to me you are attempting to install Win7 on a really old machine as Win7 has native drivers for most hardware out there and will at least complete the install and allow you to update your drivers...

Is this a Pentium2 or something ? ?These are my foresee regarding to your problem.

1. I think you should be able to meet the minimum system requirements of this Operating System.

Windows 7 system requirements

If you want to run Windows 7 on your PC, here's what it takes:

1 gigahertz (GHz) or faster 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) processor

1 gigabyte (GB) RAM (32-bit) or 2 GB RAM (64-bit)

16 GB available hard disk space (32-bit) or 20 GB (64-bit)

DirectX 9 graphics device with WDDM 1.0 or higher driver

Additional requirements to use certain features:

Internet access (fees may apply)

Depending on resolution, video playback may require additional memory and advanced graphics hardware

Some games and programs might require a graphics card compatible with DirectX 10 or higher for optimal performance

For some Windows Media Center functionality a TV tuner and additional hardware may be required

Windows Touch and Tablet PCs require specific hardware

HomeGroup requires a network and PCs running Windows 7

DVD/CD authoring requires a compatible optical drive

BitLocker requires Trusted Platform Module (TPM) 1.2

BitLocker To Go requires a USB flash drive

Windows XP Mode requires an additional 1 GB of RAM and an additional 15 GB of available hard disk space.

Music and sound require audio output

Product functionality and graphics may vary based on your system configuration. Some features may require advanced or additional hardware.

PCs with multi-core processors:
Windows 7 was designed to work with today's multi-core processors. All 32-bit versions of Windows 7 can support up to 32 processor cores, while 64‑bit versions can support up to 256 processor cores.

PCs with multiple processors (CPUs):
Commercial servers, workstations, and other high-end PCs may have more than one physical processor. Windows 7 Professional, Enterprise, and Ultimate allow for two physical processors, providing the best performance on these computers. Windows 7 Starter, Home Basic, and Home Premium will recognize only one physical processor.

2. Platforms status.
if your computer runs in lower version of any kinds of chips, and your system unit is too older i think you must upgrade first your hardware before you upgrade your software.

AHCI (Advanced Host Controller Interface) is present on newer Intel chipsets such as 975X (ICH7), P965 (ICH8), and P35 (ICH9). AHCI mode is enabled in the BIOS and 3 settings are commonly available: IDE, AHCI, and RAID. The last two (AHCI and RAID) require a driver floppy and the F6 method when installing Windows XP otherwise the hard disks won't be detected.

AHCI mode brings 3 main advantages:

1. Supports NCQ (Native Command Queuing) allowing SATA drives to accept more than one command at a time 2. and dynamically reorder the COMMANDS for maximum efficiency.
3. Supports hot plugging of devices
4. Supports staggered spin ups of multiple hard drives at BOOT time

Hope it will help you a little..

srry guess i should have listed my system specs.

AMD Athlon 64 x2 5200+
2 gigs ddr2 800
80g western digital caviar drive(brand new, never had os on it)
Nvidia 9500gt 256mb
turtle beach riviera soundcard
dlink wifi card
liteon dvd/cd read/write (old)

its a new system...except my old dvd drive and soundcard.
Get same problems when trying to install windows 7 32b or 64b on my other two old drives, those do have existing os on it but this one doesnt.
Vista gives me same problem.

Thnx to those who responded.Where is this Win7 from ? ? Quote from: newb80 on November 28, 2010, 11:00:41 AM

Shame you didn't mention the motherboard.

Problem is I cant find where to do this in my Phoenix bios

Possibly the "SATA Mode" setting in the "Advanced" section, if your BIOS is like this:

Since you have not mentioned your motherboard make and model, it is hard to find out whether your board supports switching the SATA controller to IDE mode.
yes srry again for forgetting my mb it is a ECS NFORCE6M-A (V5.0)

http://tinyurl.com/27pss54

[url]http://www.ecs.com.tw[url]

This is my first build from scratch,I ordered all of my parts from newegg.
My brother earlier mentioned maybe something was wrong with my motherboard..?

I wish I had extra parts to try troubleshotting with but I don't and with holidays I dont hve cash atm to buy a new cd/dvd drive or new mb,so I'm hoping a fix is in bios..

Those bios screens above doesnt look like my Phoenix bios..maybe I need to update my bios for it to read? Could I update my bios from cd or usb drive? mine is simple looking with solid blue background but with more options and no tabs at top not at home atm so cant check what version.

Oh and the Windows 7 came from Midlands Tech College,it was unopened full retail copy not an upgrade.
thnx again for your replies! Quote from: newb80 on November 28, 2010, 03:33:09 PM

The photos have dates on them.Visit the ECS site and DLoad th SATA drivers...
Either burn them to CD or put them on a flash drive...
Re-install Win7...very early on in the setup you will see a prompt sayinf "press F6 to install additional drivers"
Do so...
Then point it to your drivers and the install will complete...

Solve : Getting Rid Of Vista?

Answer»

HI Everyone, does anyone KNOW how to get rid of Vista from an Acer Laptop and most importantly, how to reinstall XP or mayabe Windows 7?
ThxYou could start by giving some info. of your Acer Laptop MODEL or specs... Pre-OS Installed? Recovery Partition? Boot to the XP CD, format the drive, Install XP. Make sure you have all the necessary drivers.Just from the wording of this REQUEST you don't appear too familiar with working with computers. If you remove your operating SYSTEM without accurate know-how, you can really screw up your system.

First of all, like the last poster mentioned you can boot from the XP CD. You also have the option to purchase a copy of Windows 7 and install that. IMO I never recommend 'back installing'. Installing old, out-dated software. XP is almost 10 years old. Vista was a flop in which Microsoft improved upon with Windows 7. What I do recommend is the purchase of Windows 7 Professional version which allows the option of running in XP mode. This is priced starting around $199 USD

But it's up to you. Good luck in whatever you DECIDE.  if you really want win XP, you should make sure your computer's hardware is still being supported in that operating system.

I believe there may be manufacturer's that have stopped support for XP for one reason or another (that I don't know of)
