There is usually a partition with a recovery on if you don't have the CD. Try RESTARTING the COMPUTER and when it STARTS press the F8 key to start recovery or something similar. That will help you resolve the issues of your OS. If that is wrong then please post back.

Solve : dllhost.exe question?

Answer»

what is this? i've never seen this PROCESS before and was curious what it is.

[recovering disk space - old attachment deleted by admin]It is either a normal WINDOWS process or a virus. The way to check is to look at the location of the file. The normal Windows dllhost.exe file is located in the folder C:\Windows\System32 as in your screen shot. It monitors DLL-based activities in the background and is used by SEVERAL applications as a "host" for dll-based applications. The most common Microsoft application that uses it is Internet Information Server (IIS), the web server. Dllhost.exe is an essential PART of Windows and required for Windows to work properly. It should never be disabled.

CON, AUX, COM1, COM2, COM3,COM4, PRN, LPT1,LPT2... etc. Any special DOS device name is a reserved name even today. (for compatibility with older batch files as well as the fact that they have BECOME part of every respectable windows admin's toolkit)

Solve : reading old 3.5 inch diskettes?

Answer»

I have a number of old 3.5 inch diskettes that I desperately need to read.  I just purchased a TEAC USP portable diskette drive and attached it to my Dell labtop with Windows 7.  When I insert a diskette and attempt to "open," it instructs me that the disk need to be formatted.  This, of course, would erase all the data on the disk.  What am I doing wrong? Help.
Floppy disks that are more then a year or two old are often unreadable.

Is it doing that with every disk?

Also, are you sure they are PC Formatted and not an older Macintosh Floppy disk format?Knowing what's on these floppies would help as well...MORE INFO: yes they are Macintosh formatted.  They were last used in 2005.  Back when PC's all had built-in DISC readers I had no problem reading them on PC computers.  I transferred several to a PC in 2006.  They have been carefully stored ever since.  They contain simple Word and Excel documents, nothing fancy.  Thanks.Without a file conversion app you will have to try opening them on a MAC...You might try online conversion via http://www.zamzar.com/.  I don't know whether it will work with your files but it might be worth a try.Since I can't get the files off the diskette and onto my hard-drive, I don't think an online conversion would work.  Am I missing something? Quote from: zoogang75 on December 18, 2010, 09:05:28 AM

MORE INFO: yes they are Macintosh formatted.  They were last used in 2005.

Then  you aren't going to be ABLE to read them. The formats are ENTIRELY foreign to a PC.

If you've read them on PCs before, they are in PC format (720K or 1.44MB).

You can try to find an internal floppy drive rather then a USB one and see if you have better results. Quote from: zoogang75 on December 18, 2010, 09:27:18 AM

Oops, you're right.  That would not work.

I agree with BC_Programmer about findiing computer with an internal floppy drive.  If you can't find such a computer, then you might want to buy an internal floppy drive and install it. You can still find 3.5 inch internal floppy drives on the market but the selection is getting very slim.  Here's one: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16821105001R&cm_re=floppy_drive_internal-_-21-105-001R-_-Product , currently selling at a greatly reduced price. Might not the PCs have had a utility installed such as MacDisk, MacOpener, or HFV Explorer? (The last of these is free and can be got here: http://emaculation.com/quick/hdexp131.zip)

Yes,  But This makes me think they didn't:

Quote
Back when PC's all had built-in disc readers I had no problem reading them on PC computers

The way I interpreted it was that they had no problem- that is, they didn't encounter a problem that caused them to look for, say, HFV explorer; sounds like it worked "as is". Additionally, I don't think that Macintosh computers that formatted disks like that have been around for AGES- we're talking Quadra's, at least, probably. And most of those didn't come with a floppy, so probably  something like a mac IIci or something; My guess (and it's just a guess) was that they aren't actually "macintosh formatted" but that they may have been created on a macintosh, such as, for example, a mac running OS-X in a more recent time frame, in which case I think they would be standard 1.44MB "PC" formatted disks, not sure about that.

That being said, if they are in fact "Mac-Formatted" disks (in the traditional sense), then HFVExplorer or the other tools mentioned could be used to read them.

Just to be clear, the diskettes are DEFINATELY Macintosh Formatted (Maxell MF2HD) because they're still in the original packaging.  The diskettes were all initiated on a Mac G3 using OSX.  They were also used on a G4 labtop with whatever OS was current in 2005.  I downloaded HFVExplorer this morning, but my computer is still not recognizing the diskettes as being formatted.  I'll find a MAC somewhere and see if it will read the discs with the USB diskette reader.  Assuming that works, and I move the files to a CDR, is there any reason to think my PC would have a problem opening those? Quote
is there any reason to think my PC would have a problem opening those?
You said they are Word and Excel files, so they are .doc and .xls type files, right?  If so, I believe you should be able to open them as long as you have Microsoft Office or OpenOffice.

Solve : slipstreaming Win 7?

Answer»

Ok, here is my question. I have a laptop (HP) and i think that i have a virus (yes i know that it can be removed, however, that being SAID i think that some house cleaning is in order)  now to my question. How do you slipstream driver software such as Realtec's nic drivers, hp quick launch buttons, etc into windows 7 installer so i don't have to keep installing the driver packages.

i ask, because the last time i did this was with XP and when i attempted that it did not WORK for some REASON.http://frankieloscavio.blogspot.com/2009/10/how-i-slipstreamed-windows-7-rtm.htmlYou can use DriverMax to backup and reinstall drivers: http://www.innovative-sol.com/drivermax/

You can also easily get them from HP site BEFORE you reinstall. Quote from: Broni on November 26, 2010, 10:14:04 AM

Sure, go ahead - use common sense. SEE if I care  Thanks guys. I most likely will go with allan's solution, since that is what i was trying to ACHIEVE in teh first place, when i tried with XP.I ended up slipstreaming the disc, but not reformatting. i used hi jack this and found that the reason for the reoccurring infections was for an external HDD that i don't hook up often. virus free now

Solve : BSOD NDIS.SYS?

Answer»

I have tried searching but it doesn't say the answer except for uninstalling the driver and reinstalling it but i don't know how to do it

I have a Nvidia 8400GT or something. I don't know please help. I am willing to pay if someone fixes this problem without reinstalling my OS.

It doesn't go past the 10 minute mark and i have tested it twice now. The first time it ran for 9 minutes 50 seconds till it got the BSOD. The second time gave me 10 minutes 20 seconds.

Here is a picture : 1) What is new or different since the last time everything worked properly (ie, new hw, new sw, virus, error, etc)?

2) We do not request or accept payment. We offer free advice.

3) What type of computer and operating system do you have?

4) Go to the nvidia website and download the correct driver for your video card. Then install it.

5) Go to the website of your computer manufacturer and check for a bios update.

6) Statements like: QUOTE

I have a Nvidia 8400GT or something.
are not helpful. You are the one in front of your computer. You need to provide complete and accurate information in order for us to be of help.As soon as it started happening I system restored it to 7 days back but it still had the BSOD
I tries getting the Nvidia driver and let it auto detect what I had. I tried to install it and it said there are no drivers to update or something about unable to update :/.

I have VISTA as you can see from where I posted it. Also what do you mean by the type of computer? I have a laptop if it's what you mean.

Also I'll try the BIOS update but i have no idea how to get there. My laptops a HP pavilion entertainment PC.When i tried to do a BIOS update it said i can't do it in safemode and i'm afraid of doing it normally incase it crashes partially through the update

I have a HP pavilion entertainment pc dv6500 and i have downloaded the BIOS update but can't run it in safe mode. I need some serious help with this because it gave me loads of warnings about not TURNING it off while it was updating.

Solve : recording live radio through internet?

Answer»

I have windows 7 home premium 64 bits on my packard bell easy note TJ 75 with media player 12 . Please tell me if I can record live radio through internet on  my computer or cd and howI think that would constitute copyright infringement. I may be wrong. Quote from: Mulreay on November 17, 2010, 08:29:41 PM

I think that would constitute copyright infringement. I may be wrong.

In the EU we have the Information Society Directive which, in short, says that copying music from the radio for private use is permissible if the artists receive a “fair compensation”. In case of a lawsuit against radio music ripping technologies, the whole debate will be about the meaning of the term “fair compensation”. It can be argued that since radio networks pay a fee to artists to use their MATERIAL, they are already paying a “fair compensation”. In the US context the "doctrine of fair use" should make it legal to record songs from the radio for private use. If it were actual radio, it shouldn't be a problem. I don't know how those laws apply to Internet "radio".my mp3 player has an FM radio recorder. So it can record what is currently playing on the station I am listening to.

I WONDER if it is ok to record internet radio for personal enjoyment. Not for resale or anything of that sort. Quote from: quaxo on November 18, 2010, 06:33:17 PM
If it were actual radio, it shouldn't be a problem. I don't know how those laws apply to Internet "radio".

In Europe and the US I believe it is legal to record, for your own use, broadcasts that you have a right to listen to in the first place, whether they ARRIVE via radio waves, or cable or the internet. It is not legal to resell, redistribute, or rebroadcast the recordings without the permission of the copyright owner.
There is a software program called Replay Music 3. It has a free demo, but it is $20 for the full version.

Solve : Windus Maximus?

Answer»

I was CURIOUS about ALL Windows users, but you have to pick a subforum, so I picked this one.

Anyway, I have a very definite opinion about opening windows (lower-case) maximized vs. "normal", and I frequently get frustrated with the way that Windows (upper-case) behaves. But then I thought, well, MAYBE it behaves that way because that's the way The People WANT it to behave, and I'm the odd duck.

Hence this poll.I prefer programs to show their windows how I last left them. Thankfully, 99.9% of all programs do this. the rest are crap anyway.I'm not sure i exactly get the question as i have all apps and programs do what i want them to do...not what they might want to do...But what's your preference? Maximized? Or not? THAT'S the question!

(And 7 doesn't always leave it as you left it...)It depends on the program really.  I have some that I open maximized all the time and others that open in a 'normal' size.  For example SAFARI and FireFox both open maximized, my calculator opens normally sized. Quote from: rjbinney on November 22, 2010, 08:41:57 PM

(And 7 doesn't always leave it as you left it...)

Again, it has nothing to do with the OS.The programs I use most are max - the other programs that I; eg. when adding something to a certian SERVER, will be normal - MAKES it easier to swap between the different programs.

Solve : Can't restore my complete system to new pc. Help, Please.?

Answer»

Hello.
I made/cloned a system image of my c and E drive, using Windows 7 backup and RESTORE programme.  my system is windows 7 ultimate,  C (as usual) is my windows drive - consisting of 120GB data,  and E has my additional data (pics, music, etc drive.  E uses 1 terabyte of data.
This was backed up on an internal 1 TB drive. drive
I bought a new PC. This has a new blank but formatted 1.5 TB drive, and I want to restore my COMPLETE system (C and E) to the new computer.  I connected my 1 TB internal Sata "image" drive in the computer and tried to restore all my data. However, only my C drive keeps being restored. When started the computer recognizes both PHYSICAL drives and shows me all the "image data". No it doesn't say it's CORRUPTED.  It doesn't give me any options, just installs only the c drive and not the E.
What am I not doing?  Need help desperately.  Thanks for any assistance.

Solve : Windows 7 Wallpaper Slide Show Died?

Answer»

I know it's really not a big deal, but I love my wallpapers Seems that after the latest Windows update (Nov 24, 2010) my slideshow won't work and is stuck on just 1 WALLPAPER. I can manually change them but otherwise I'm stuck. Yes, the world is not going to end, but if there's anyone out there who knows what may have caused this I would greatly appreciate an answer. BTW this is my first post on here, so a big HELLO to everyone! Click start then type edit power plan in the SEARCH box and press enter. Now click Change advanced power SETTINGS. Go to DESKTOP BACKGROUND settings > Slide show. Change it to Available.

Solve : Rebooting Windows7?

Answer»

I have a bunch of PROGRAMS that run at start-up, however, when I REBOOT Windows7 most of them do not show up in the hidden TASK bar. I always have to log off and back on again for everything to show up. I do see them as running but just not on the hidden task bar. Anyone else have this problem and know of a way to FIX it?My question would be do you need all these apps LAUNCHED on startup and hogging resources ? ?

If so let us know and we'll find a fix.

I deleted my ACCOUNT by mistake and all my word processor documents are GONE. Is there anyway to get them back for free?First look in the recycle bin - it's possible they're just waiting there for you. If not, try recuva (http://www.piriform.com/recuva)

Solve : Vista update and iTunes?

Answer»

Yesterday an MS update was scheduled for my laptop so I installed over night.. 11 updates in all.

When I woke up I started my laptop and everything seemed fine except my tool bar was acting strange as in:

The quick launch was no longer showing just 4 with an extender button.. (forgive my terminology) but all 8 across the task bar.
The task bar was showing very small applications as in they were barely recognisable and the applications were all on the right rather than the left, for example the firefox window was about 1/6th it's normal size, and with a very random scroll button next to it??? Not sure either.

Then just to stick the boot in my iTunes had disappeared, all my music had lost it's iTunes logo and had gone to 'search for program' logos.

Here's what I did to solve the problem.

I went back to my restore point and removed all the MS updates which returned most of the problems back to working correctly. My taskbar and quick launch were fine but iTunes kept coming back with 'some files are missing, please re-install iTunes'.

Not FEELING like re-installing iTunes to point 8.94gb of music back to it I decided to re-install the updates and rather than let it happen when I'm asleep I decided to take control.

After the update re-installed I checked iTunes, same thing 'files are missing'. All taskbar and quick launch problems were solved this time around, so no weird things.

I decided to force iTunes into an update by going into MS updates and checking recent updates and checking for any new ones.
iTunes update then kicked in and started downloading (about 105mb) and the PART where iTunes normally starts during the quicktime and iTunes  update the same 'files are missing' message came up, so I clicked OK to see what WOULD happen as I don't want to start again and the install continued.

The update finished and iTunes started working again with all my playlists etc intact.

I wrote this so that anyone else who had a similar problem can just search the CH search box for help with this. It certainly annoyed me no end.

Very helpful Mulreay...

Thanx for the heads up....

Solve : Do you use power saving options for your pc??

Answer»

Which power saving features do you use for your computer or laptop? Do you ever have issues with any of them? What is your overall experience with the features?
I clicked "Other (Specify)" because I use AMD Cool 'n' Quiet with my AMD X4 Phenom II 945. I have never had any issues. My overall experience is that it runs NICE and cool when I'm not doing much and ramps up the power when I need it.

The peaks at around 35 and 29 deg C were when I was doing DIVX encoding in VirtualDub. The rest of the time, as you can see, it stays around 20 - 25.

For me I have my laptop set to use a number of power management features when RUNNING on batteries in both win7 as well as Mint 10. However, the only one that usually get's used is Sleep mode; I don't usually leave my laptop unattended/unused long enough for it to hibernate. What is the Hybrid Sleep mode?

I have Windows 7 installed on an HP Compaq d530 CMT tower system and I discovered I could set the computer to hibernate by pressing the power button.  http://www.mydigitallife.info/2007/10/29/what-is-hybrid-sleep-and-differences-with-basic-sleep-mode-in-vista Quote from: soybean on November 24, 2010, 08:16:06 AM

Solve : New OS installation problelm?

Answer»

I am trying to load Windows XP on a computer with a recently formatted hard drive but after it starts I get the message, "File setupdd.sys could not be loaded.  The error code is 7."
How can I get this computer to allow the install?  Why am I getting an error 7 message?Additional information.  The setup procedure advances to (Kernel Debugger DLL)  then stops giving me the error 7 thing.Could be faulty or incompatible memory or incompatible hardware. Has this computer ever run XP? Has it got enough RAM (at least 64 MB but ideally 128 MB or more? Is this a new build? If so, did you put it together out of old parts? Or maybe it's a junker you are trying to revive?

Quote

When you start your computer by using the Windows XP Recovery Console or by starting from the Windows XP CD-ROM, you receive one of the following error messages:
Setupdd.sys could not be loaded. Error code 4.
Setupdd.sys could not be loaded. Error code 7.

This issue may occur if your computer CONTAINS a hardware component that is either damaged or is incompatible with Windows XP.

To troubleshoot this issue, follow these steps.

The steps are here...

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/330181

Yes Windows XP was on this computer.  It is a Toshiba Laptop computer.  When it was brought to me the owner had put passwords on it but could not remember them.  I could not even get into setup because it asked for a password for that.  So I got a USB IDE/SATA Adapter so I could remove the hard drive from their computer to recover their pictures.  To try to make the computer usable again I formatted the hard drive and put it back into the computer to try to reinstall Windows XP.  The computer has 4 GB of memory and is not a junker.  Except for not being ABLE to start it because of the missing passwords the computer worked before.  I may have made a mistake to format the hard drive but I thought that after doing that Windows would install. Also, are you using an original, retail XP CD?Yes, this is the original disk that came with the computer. Quote from: mwredt on November 14, 2010, 12:30:57 PM
Yes, this is the original disk that came with the computer.

Have you done the troubleshooting steps yet?
Yes I have followed the instructions in the kb330181.  On the laptop there are no PCI devices I can remove but I did remove one of the memory sticks at a time and booted the computer with the same results both times.Could be damaged. Laptops have a hard life.

Somehow I don't think that damage is the problem.  It was booting okay before until it asked for the password which I didn't have.Hi
I think you need to re-format the h/drive whilst it is in the laptop using the x.p disk.
Not possible.  When I begin the boot this is what I see:
PRESS any key to boot from the CD.
Setup is inspecting your computer's hardware configuration....
Windows setup
Press F6 if you need to install a third party SCSI or RAID driver...
Press F2 to run Automated System Recovery (ASR)...
Setup is loading files (Windows Executive)...
Setup is loading files (Hardware Abstraction Layer)...
Setup is loading files (Kernel Debugger DLL)...

File setupdd.sys could not be loaded
                     The error code is 7.

Setup cannot CONTINUE.  Press any key to exit.

As you can see there is no opportunity to format the drive.   Is there some way to do it while it is in the laptop?Try it with only 1 stik of RAM.I tried booting with just one stick of memory, then I switched and put the other stick in.  The same result.
I have to correct something I said.  I mistakenly said that I was using the original disk that came with the computer.  I don't have that original disk but the one I am using is new and is Windows XP Home Premium.

Solve : chkdsk and the recovery voume problem running have tried all methods to run?

Answer»

hello
I have a laptop with WINDOWS 7 64 on it nad a program called "diskeeper" now the problem is not with the program it only shows the problem so here is the problem: in diskeeper it shows two volumes a C: drive and a Recovery volume now I can run chkdsk in the C drive however cannot run chkdsk in the recovery volume, (which is about 15 MB) I need to run chkdsk before I can dfrag it, as I get a error that says it needs to run chkdsk before it can be dfraged, I have tried safe mode and chkdsk C: /R/F which runs, but the recovery volume still shows up as not having chkdsk run, so I would appreciate any help at all on this problem thank you, I don't have a operating system CD as it was a download.Do not defrag the recovery partition. Just ignore it.

And for future reference, chkdsk /r assumes the "f" switch. The correct command is just "chkdsk /r".There is no reason to either checkdisk or defragment a recovery partition. Since the CONTENTS of the drives don't change and are only read when you perform a recovery, errors cannot be introduced, and for the same reason the drive doesn't get fragmented. And even if it did, it would be POINTLESS to defragment it anyway.

This sounds like a case of cargo cult PC optimization.thanks for the help! it is appreciated  very much mark as solved!

Solve : WinVista to Win7 problem?

I have a netgear wg111v2 wireless adapter and im looking to upgrade to Win7. I had to apply specific settings to get the adapter to WORK on vista. I just upgraded my adapter version to 4.0. About your Netgear--> http://kb.netgear.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/12286/session/L2F2LzEvc2lkL3pweVBnQ2ZrO____________________________________O  Now how do i know which version of the Netgear Wg111v2 smart wizard i haveIs your WINDOWS 7 the 64bit version? If so, almost all netgear wireless adapters won't work as this isn't supported.
If your still using the 32bit version it will still work just like Vista or XP.

Compatible for Win7 is much higher than that of Vista, and can support most WinXP and Vista software and drivers. Netgear doesn't have 64bit driver support (if going from 32bit to 64bit you might have some replacement driver issues). Win7 however will not allow incompatible drivers to be INSTALLED which might make it unstable. If it's not supported or for GAMING purposes, you might want to go wired if possible. Quote

which version of the Netgear Wg111v2

If you are still RUNNING vista with your Netgear adapter, run or go to your Device manager, Network adapter. click + sign to expand. Right-click choose Properties->Driver tab->Driver version
See here --> http://kb.netgear.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/713NetGear has plenty of 64bit drivers...for both Vista and Win7.

Solve : Windows 7 Usb and permission?

I'm very new to Windows 7, having used Windows XP for a long time. So I have no clue about anything. I plugged in my external USB device, a WINDOW appeared saying that, do I want to scan the USB device for problems and fix them (Cksum or something). So I was unsure whether to do the scan or not
because the USB device worked perfectly on another (XP) computer. So I said no and carried on, autoplay came I selected show in folder. It did.

Problems:

-Ico file didn't show up (viewed as thumbnails)
-When I tried to open a folder it said i didn't have admin permissions (I only have one account and it has admin facilities) so then it said to go to the security tab I did and when to the screen where you can choose who has what RIGHTS. I checked all boxes for E:/, like Write, Read, Edit and stuff but then a load of popups come saying that the USB is corrupted so it could not save the changes. On Windows XP it works fine.

I don't want to scan and fix the problems because I'm worried whether or not after these fixes it would work on XP.

Thank you very  much The problems do exist. Fix them.

It works fine with XP because XP:

-doesn't care wether the device works or not. It just accesses it. You have to scan it manually.
-XP doesn't include a very usable implementation of Limited User Accounts and doesn't have it set to the default. Therefore most PEOPLE are always running as admin. with Windows Vista and 7 nobody is ever running as an admin (at LEAST not without making a number of changes).

With Windows Vista/7, when you log in, if you are logging in to an "administrator" account, it strips off all the admin rights from the token, and all the programs you run start by default with that token.

When you need administrative permission to do something, such as change a setting, or if a program tries to start itself as an admin, with UAC enabled you are prompted (if the scenario fits with your UAC options). If you then answer Yes, or If it doesn't fit your UAC options (win 7) or if you simply have it disabled, then Windows just shrugs it's shoulders, creates a new Logon token that includes your administrative accesses, and launches the process/launches the process again under that account.

This is where the majority of confusion about UAC comes from. People complain that they cannot access certain files and folders, and then attest that "it says that I don't have permission but I'm the admin *sniffle*", when truly they aren't the admin and simply don't understand the new scheme. (again, not without tweaks, anyway).

The proper solution when this occurs with a USB drive of any description is to take ownership of the folders in question. As you note you've essentially tried that. Not sure why you needed the security tab for that, for me I simply right-click the folder and choose "take ownership" (actually, that's a lie; usually I never need that option because windows prompts me when it's required).

Basically, the issue? the stick is corrupted. Just because XP seems to use it with no problem doesn't mean there aren't any; it doesn't perform any sort of automatic checking to the stick as Vista/7 do.
Okk, bump D:<

So I got the usb fixed, well I ran chkdsk And now it doesn't say that the usb has any errors of any sort now

However I still have the same problem, I can't open exe or any other folders. The icon thing was another issue. I tried to change the permission settings alot however things weren't any different.

I looked up online and someone had said to download this partition table, and I have no clue what that's about. Lol.

Solve : 32 bit to 64??

Answer»

I have a new netbook with Windows 8 Home Premium. It has a 32 bit system. Can it be upgraded to 64?
Sorry if this is a stupid question(I am not computer savvy-as you can tell). Thanks! I'm impressed that you have windows 8 xD But yeah, if you're willing to pay for the 64-bit reinstall. (I presume there is a cost).best to run this app before spending money
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?FamilyID=1b544e90-7659-4bd9-9e51-2497c146af1590% of all netbooks use 32-bit hardware.

You need 64-bit compatible hardware (64-bit CPU, etc) in order to run a 64-bit OS. Quote from: macko1944 on November 18, 2010, 03:42:06 PM

I have a new netbook with Windows 8 Home Premium.
No, you don't.  Windows 8 hasn't been released by Microsoft yet.As said above, you do need to test your laptop to ensure that it can support the 64-bit operating system but as well as considering that you ALSO need to consider whether or not you really need it as it's not the cheapest of upgrades.

If you only use your laptop for browsing the internet and such trivial tasks then you probably will not notice much difference, 64bit really is for if you do a fair amount of multi-tasking. (I only say that as I have KNOWN a couple of people who have upgraded who do only use the PC for going on the internet or creating word documents etc. and they haven't noticed any difference what-so-ever)Sorry all!As you can see,I am not much of a typist either! It is of course Windows 7(!!!)Home Premium and not Windows 8.
The only reason I asked the question was, that I asked and received(?)a MEMORY upgrade to 4 GB(and paid for it!)before taking the netbook home, only to find out that the 32 bit system is not able to use 3 GB-s,let alone 4.So,now you have the full story. Many thanks to all the useful responses to the people who really understand computers. Solve : How to rename "My Documents" in Vista?

Answer»

A family member set up my HP laptop and used my full name to IDENTIFY the computer. Now when I download files or save documents they are saved to a folder with my full name and I would like to change that. Is it possible? And if so, how would I do it?
Thank you.I don't fully understand the question, but try clicking on the folder and then PRESSING F2.Will that also create the correct file and other information associations? WHen you download a file for example, it automatically goes to the {logged in User} downloads folder. This simple rename will take care of that also? I thoughh I would have to create a totally new user account and then try to transfer all settings/files etc.
Thank youI'm unclear on exactly what you're trying to do.Sorry about our miscommunications. What I am trying to do is this: When I download or save an office document, it creates a link to the file. this link now displays my full and complete name, because that is how my friend set my user account up as well as  the computer name. When you type in system information,  registered to, it also displays my name. For privacy reasons I am trying to change all this stuff to something less descriptive. Can it be done w/o reinstalling Vista?I'm still not completely sure I know what you want to do. Do you want to change the name of your user folder in Documents and Settings? Do you want to change the name of your computer registration (right-click on My Computer - Properties)? Do you want to change the name of your default download folder?

I'm sorry - I know you are trying to EXPLAIN to the best of your ability, but I find your posts a LITTLE confusing (maybe it's me).OK lets keep trying.
Yes, I want to change the name of  the user folder in  documents and settings

Yes, I want to change the name of the computer registration

Yes I want to change the name of my default download folder.

You are correct on all three counts. Is it possible to do? Sorry for my confusing descriptions..1) Download Folder: You can download to any folder you like. When you want to download a file, right-click on it, and choose the location to which you want to download it. After the first time, it should always default to that folder.

2) Computer name / registration: Depends on the OS. It's somewhere in System Properties though.

3) User Folder - unless it's the default Admin folder, just go to Control Panel - User Accounts. If it IS the default Admin folder you cannot change the name. You can, however, create a new user folder and start using that one.Is there anything special needed to coppy over everything to the new user account? You can copy the entire CONTENTS of the other folder if you like.OK I make a new account, log in as administrator, the just copy/paste my old account over to the new one. Correct? That should work, yes.

And to expand on the default download location, what browser are you using to download? The folder creation seemed to work. I am using IE8 as my browserGlad to hear your problem is solved.

Solve : copy and replace exes problem, and create batch file then save problem?

Answer»

I have a file in a folder called bla.exe

I copy a newer version to the folder

WINDOWS 7 asks me if I want to copy and replace the file

I say yes

Windows 7 says "ERROR file is open in another program"

WHAT THE HECK IS THAT!!!
(it is in no WAY shape or form open in any program except for explorer!)

There is some kind of delayed file protection inside windows 7 that is not in windows XP nor vista.

in XP or vista you can copy and replace files with no problems.

I have searched and found several possible fixes that dont FIX the problem:
1.) I set the advanced owner permisions to my whole C: drive to have the owner as Administrator instead of trusted installer

2.) UAC is off and I have set all basic permissions to full control on admin and on everyone
_______________________________________ ______________________

problem #2

In windows XP I edit a batch file and I click save to save its new contents.

In windows 7 I save the edited batch file and it says it is in use and I end up having to save it as a different name or different location!
_______________________________________ _____________________

- I have searched to no end on this issue since win 7 came out.
- I have this same issue after re-installing windows 7 multiple times( and with default settings)
- I have this same issue on different peoples computers that have win 7 too.

_______________________________________ ______________________

the files that have copy errors can be ANY exe and it wont let you unless you wait about 10 minutes after you clicked the original exe.

the batch save problem also exists on any windows 7

_______________________________________ _____________________-

Any possible help or solutions would be great.....someday I guess.... I have absolutely no idea what you are talking about. I'm moving and replacing executables immediately after closing them to test various installation scenarios for my own programs, and I haven't had any problems editing batch files in the manner you describe.

In fact, in the first instance, I am quite LITERALLY closing the program, replacing the executable, and starting it again all within a fraction of a second.weird...
what version of 7 do you have (home premium, ultimate?),
32 bit or 64
and build?

mine is 7 ultimate build 7600 (i think) and 64 bit

Im not sure why you have no problem but thats why Im posting here so we can put our minds together

I fully can understand your confusion though... thanksWindows 7 Ultimate x64 build 7600 (RTM).

For the record however I also had no problems with my laptop when it was running Home Premium (also x64).

If the lock seems to stay for a minute or so, you could try process explorer. Some add-on program...Almost certainly an AV program if installed... could be keeping it open for some silly caching scheme. you can use the find feature to search for handles that for that file, and see which programs are using that handle.

The same thing is probably causing your batch file save issues.oh yes procmon i have used that before... not for this problem though... although I sometimes dont use virus protection and I still have the errors

I use antivir by avira when I want to and I have no viruses.

also when I have the antivir installed I have tried disabling the guard on it to test the same theory and I still have the errors.

could it be a certain service .. maybe if I turn all services to automatic it will fix it...should I try that? It's not a services issue...

Yet come to think of it we have no way of knowing what whacks you have done to this system...so yeah...try the defaults.Well I have tried the defaults and still no go... I install vista 64 bit and I get no problems at all... but I paid for windows 7 and I wish I could figure this out.

After i was experiancing some issues with my wireless mpuse i decided to roll back to a previous restore in hopes some update would be uninstalled and my mouse would work. But instead when i turn on my comp (sony vaio vpccw17fx) all i get is a black screen. No boot options no safe mode nothing at all. I was running windows seven woth a dual install of ubuntu. So normally grub would load and i COULD select a OS to boot with.
Sorry for any spelling or grammar errors i missed, not used to typing with ipod touchWhich OS was installed 1st ? ?
Windows 7 wad installed 1st. And ive been able to get grub to load and LAUNCH windows. But its crazy slow. It took one hour for grub boot loader to display after turning my pc on and then after being able to select windows it was another hour before it DISPLAYED the starting windows text but still no windows logo above the text and its been about 45 minutesTime for a wipe and a clean install...
Decide if you want to INCLUDE Ubuntu this time...Yea i had figured this was prolly gonna be my only option. Was just hoping i guess. Well thank you , i guess it was a good idea for me to start downloading a ISO of windows seven after all./ Well we don't assist with that here...

Solve : windows 7 firewall?

is windows 7 FIREWALL ok,or do I need to purchase one?
Is it one way or two way  ( What is the best ??)
It's 2 way and it's fine.Thank you for  answer Quote

It's 2 way
Actually, it's not, unless configured manually.
By default, it's still 1-way firewall. Quote
Actually, it's not, unless configured manually.
How this is done. ThanksThis is for Vista, but the very same applies to Win 7: http://dotnetwizard.net/vista-stuff/enable-2-way-windows-vista-firewall-with-advanced-security/
It's actually worth quoting:
Quote
Windows Vista includes a two-way firewall that has outbound filtering disabled by default. Why? Because it is complicated for end-users to use so they had that feature turned off as well as hidden. In fact, it is hidden so well that many users may think that the two-way firewall was yet another feature that was pulled from the final product.

Personally....why o bother and pull your hair out, if there is a NUMBER of FREE 2-way firewalls out there already. Comodo, PC Tools, etc. Thanks for the information. I will follow the road easier. And use Comodo
Of course, when i use another firewall such as Comodo
i will disable windows 7 firewall ?Yes.I would take Online Armor Firewall over Commodo for one reason. As per my last experiences with online armor, I found it to bug you with less messages while doing its good job.

Commodo is good, but there's just more message boxes you have to WADE thru (unless they've rectified it SINCE I last tried it  )

faster method: right-click on empires.exe, choose COMPATIBILITY options and choose "disable desktop composition". Although your's seems to be a special case, so I don't know if that would work. for me neither the first, it's expansion, nor the second or it's expansion outright crashes, but unless I terminate explorer it has transparency issues.

The only game that's seriously put up a fight to GET working was Need For Speed III and High Stakes; they sorta-kinda worked but had pretty terrible generic software rasterization. Thankfully there are user/fan-created packs that fix vista and windows 7 issues (specifically those related to the hardware renderer setup) that fixed it.

I still hardly play it though. I guess I like the challenge,

Solve : Expanding Start Menu Folders in 7?

Answer»

In XP, you could CREATE folders in your Start Menu with shortcuts in the folder. When you selected the folder, it would expand so you could select either a shortcut in that folder or another subfolder:

In 7, the best I can do is add a folder to the Start Menu, and when I select that folder, it OPENS the folder in another Explorer window... Instead of the nice and easy way of just having it cascade.

Is there a way to do that? The start menu folders are stored as a normal filesystem at %APPDATA%\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu. add/remove/delete folders as you please.Yeah, that's still not right...

That's click the Start Menu, select "All Programs", scroll to the folder, then click...

Isn't there a way so the folder POPS in the initial Start Menu, a LA XP?The only way I know of to get the fly-out MENUS in Windows 7's start menu is to install Classic Shell.

Solve : Merging two folders without getting duplicates?

Answer»

Hello,

I have an EXTERNAL hard drive that I use to store pictures, music etc. I used to store it on my computers internal HD before I started RUNNING out of space. Since I moved it over, I have added a lot of pictures and other stuff ( many hundreds ). Now I am worried that if something happens to my Internal drive, I will lose all of the NEW stuff. I tried to just copy and paste the info from the new folder to the old one, thinking that it would see the DUPLICATES and ask me if I want to delete them. It did ask, but it missed a lot of them, I ended up with almost a hundred duplicates in the one folder.

I know that one WAY would be to just delete the old ones and copy the new ones, but I was hoping to avoid that massive transfer if possible. It would be around 30 GB across a 2.0 USB cable.

Thank you,

Solve : Start Windows 7 without password?

Answer»

I ran a search here on the Forum for start WINDOWS 7 without password, disable windows 7 password prompt and bypass windows 7 logon and didn't find an answer. I have tried run> control userwpasswords2 and unchecked "User must enter a username and password to use this computer", then clicked apply, typed in my password at the prompt, restarted the computer and no such luck. It still requires me to sign in. I tried to select Homegroup User$ and it won't allow me to. does anyone know of a registry tweak for this? This didn't work for you?

http://www.windowsreference.com/windows-server-2008/how-to-enable-autologon-in-windows-7-windows-server-2008/
It finally did work. For some odd reason I had to re-check REQUIRE password, reboot, uncheck it, reboot, recheck it and reboot several times in order for it to take. Thankfully Windows 7 now starts without prompting for a password!I tried this link without results.  Any ideas where else I can go?Although I'm not a big fan of major necroposting, this is relevant, so...

Alternative method to the above link:

1) Open up the registry (Windows key + R, type in regedit and click OK)
2) Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon
3) EDIT the following:

AutoAdminLogon = 1
DefaultUsername = type in the username here.
DefaultPassword = type in the password here.  If you don't see this value, right-click ANYWHERE in the right-hand pane, left-click "New," then "String value".  Call it "DefaultPassword" and then put your password there.

If you're on a domain, you'll have to add the string value "DefaultDomain" as well and type in its name.

4) Reboot.  It will automatically attempt to log in with the credentials you put in the registry (and will encrypt the DefaultPassword value for security reasons).

To override the autologin, begin holding SHIFT while the Windows 7 splash screen is up, and don't let go until you get your logon screen again.  This will not work with USB KEYBOARDS for some reason...

Solve : Windows 7 or Vista on USB drive? External HDD??

Answer»

I currently have Ubuntu installed on my HDD, but I also want Windows (preferably 7) so I can run software and programs that aren't compatible with Linux. Can I put Windows on a USB jump drive or an external HDD? (CD is not an option, because I only have 1 CD drive and need it for something else)
Are there any other [external] options?
I'm hesitant to dual-partition, I'd much rather put Windows on an external device. However, if dual partitioning is my only option, I have 2 additional questions: How much will it slow down my computer (to have 2 OS versus 1)? And will I need to delete my Ubuntu partition (currently taking up entire HDD) and reinstall it in a smaller partition, or can I shrink it without losing data?
I do not want to install Windows within Ubuntu. If I dual partition I want to make the partitions completely separate.

Thanks for any answers. You should only consider having a HIGHER RAM for your machine. And maybe a 7200 rpm large capacity hard drive is better for having 2 OS installed(patition) on one HD. Or maybe you could post your current computer specs. If its on a HD -->  http://www.ehow.com/how_4623771_operating-systems-one-hard-drive.html Quote from: Shadow Vegan on November 12, 2010, 02:49:29 PM

Can I put Windows on a USB jump drive or an external HDD?

No. Windows is designed to be installed on an internal fixed drive.

Are there any other [external] options?

No.

It would not "slow down" your computer at all.

You can shrink it.

Quote
I do not want to install Windows within Ubuntu.

You cannot do this anyway.

They would be.
Thanks for the answers.

I know Ubuntu can be installed within Windows, I didn't know if it works the other way. Thanks for telling me.May not be suitable for you but there is the option to put XP on a flash stick...I did this in a very similar situation

but I also want Windows (preferably 7) so I can run software and programs that aren't compatible with Linux.

Have you heard of Wine? It can run a lot of Windows programs.
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Wine

Check out the Wine HQ app database to see if the programs you want to run will work WELL with Wine or not.

Why not?
You can use a virtualization program like VIRTUALBOX to run it in a virtual machine.

You can delete it or shrink it, whichever you prefer.

You should alway back up your data before doing any partition editing.
You will need to boot to an Ubuntu live CD in order to shrink your partition. You can't resize a mounted partition so you will need the live CD. Once you've booted the CD, go to System > Administration > Partition Editor. This will start the Gnome partition editor.

To resize your partition, right-click it and select Resize/Move. Then you can adjust the size of your partition using the slider or you can input the size in the boxes below. After you shrink it you will see a gray portion listed as unallocated. You can leave it unallocated. When you boot the windows DISK you can create and a format a new partition in the unallocated space. If you see another partition called linux-swap leave it alone. None of the resizing actually starts until you click Apply so you can play around with the sizes until you get it where you want.

Also, if you install windows after Linux, Windows will ovewrite the master boot record. See here for how to recover grub.
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RecoveringUbuntuAfterInstallingWindows

If you want to delete your Ubuntu partition and start fresh, you can boot the windows CD and delete it. Then you create a new partition for windows and install it. Once you have windows installed you can then install Ubuntu after Windows which is slightly easier.

manythanks for takin the time to help me outAt what point do you get the blue screen?
Preliminary guess is bad ram, bad mobo or bad power supply.in answer to your question i bought the computer brand new a few years ago,i haven't opened it or tampered with it in any way.
i noticed a while ago it was goin a little slower than usual and there were a few other problems,so i reformatted the drive and re-installed everything from the recovery disks.

when i last had a bsod i had quite a few things runnin, msn messenger with my web cam on, a few web pages open and  music playin.

its happened four times now so i'd like to try and remedy the problem if thats goin to be possible

many thanks for your time

Open device manager. Any errors?nope there's no errors in device managerOkay. Then I suggest you download memtest (http://www.memtest.org/), burn it to a cd and run it. If that doesn't show any errors you can run chkdsk /r on your hd, though I doubt that's the problem. Let's see where we are after these two actions. Could still be a bad mobo or ps - but either way I think it's likely a hw issue.ok i've done a memory test and thats just fine, done the check disk thing and thats just fine. How long ago did you format the drive?
Are you doing anything in particular, when BSOD happen?
Are Windows and your AV program up to date?
broni

i formatted the drive no more than SIX months ago and have always up dated it as and when it asked me too.

all i am doin when the bsod happens is just normal stuff, surfin, talkin on cam, and playin music.

nothing that would really tax the computer, thius is why i have a problem seein how there can be anything wrong with the computer.Download System Information for Windows (SIW free version)

Solve : Lost certain functions - only got log off and lock remaining??

Answer»

Hi
I HOPE this mkaes sense, but when you go to start, then i used to get the option to log off, lock pc, turn off etc the only options i have now are to log off or lock -all the other functions are missing. So to turn the pc off i have to USE the power button itself, also when i press ctrl/alt/delete to start the task manager, there is only 1 option comes up then and im sure several other options used to appear too?

Anyone had this problem on Vista?

thanksI'm not familiar with this problem, but after a bit of googling I FOUND this fix:

"Open "Registry EDITOR" >> Navigate to >>

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Policies\Explorer

On the Right Pane Delete "NoClose"

Log off and Log in"

Solve : folder search options?

Answer»

the menu under the ADVANCED settings of the view tab of folder and search OPTIONS is not visible. how to restore??  Do you mean that the list of check boxes in the "Advanced settings" section are not there?

yes exactly there
that whole box is emptyjust this way

[recovering disk space - old attachment deleted by admin]If you have Windows Vista, you can try the registry file attached to the following post:  [Link]  (To read the full thread, click here.)

If you have Windows 7, you can try one of the registry files attached to this post.  I would try the one titled "Hidden" first.  If that does not work, the "Folder" file should.

[recovering disk space - old attachment deleted by admin]Missing or corrupted Advanced Folder Options are often caused by a virus infection, so a thorough malware check is probably a good idea.
hey kip
thanks a lot

its working............  after i updated the the registry file named - folder.reg
great job man , i thought i`d to format the LAPTOP

can you tell me what may be the possible cause

I have never seen that problem before, so I do not know for sure what could have caused it.
Two likely possibilities are registry cleaners or as Salmon Trout suggested, malware.
I would follow his advise and run some scans to be safe.hey kip
there is another problem
whenever i try to tune up my laptop through hp health analyzer of hp adviser software they provide with every hp laptop
then what itdoes is like ..... it starts and hangs on to this point

it says that it is downloading update but nothing goes onI do not have any experience with the HP Health Analyzer but I did find a thread about this problem on the HP support forums.  [Link]
There does not seem to be a reliable solution but some people said that reinstalling HP Advisor fixed the problem.
You can search for the proper HP Advisor version for your computer here.

EDIT: Fixed link to the HP thread.hi kip
my antivirus always blocks a program - svchost.exe
should i allow it ? which kind of file it is i mean what does it do? is it a virus?Viruses are out of my expertise.  It would probably be best if you follow the instructions in the following topic.  [Link]

Run sfc /scannow, or, perform a repair via the windows disk.

Solve : Need a better Spam control?

Answer»

Hi -
I am running Vista Home Basic  32 bit.  I USE Yahoo mail.  Lately I have been getting a lot of spam.  What is the best way to reduce the amount of spam.  If I change mail service which one should I change to?    Thanks     BobI've never used yahoo mail so I don't know what options are available. But if you switch to a pop account you can set junk mail parameters within the email CLIENT plus your ISP probably has a spam filter available on their end.Yahoomail has a Spam folder for any suspected spam messages. Make sure spamguard is ON. Or go to your Yahoomail SETTINGS and on Empty spam folder option(once a week, every two weeks, once a month and immediately) and save changes. Also delete unsolicited messages found on your inbox and CLICK or empty trash folder and or spam folder.Hi -
Thanks for your replies.
I have my spamguard "on".  As you know there is room for 500 blocked addresses and I have 100 still unused.  Perhaps I am getting more spams because of Christmas.  I have set spam folder to HOLD the spams for one week and I will find out how many I am getting.  Maybe it is not as bad as I think.
Allen - what mail service do you use?
Thanks       BobI use pop accounts provided by my two ISP's. My email client has always been MS Outlook.Allan -
Thanks I may try something like that if I can't get improvement with what I use.   BobSome of the ISPs do a good job of filtering out spam generated by spambots and mass-mail spammers.  I've been using the same POP email account provided by my ISP for several years and I have no spam problem.  Clearly, they are filtering out spam.  Quote from: soybean on December 24, 2010, 08:33:05 AM

Yeah, but there is a potential problem. For example, one of my ISP's offers different levels of spam filtering and they tell you right off the bat that the higher the level the more of a possibility that non-spam messages will be filtered. You just need to be careful when talking to your isp.Hi -
Thanks for the replies.  I think with the information you have given me I can solve my problem.
