Solve : I need to see what is taking up space on my hard drive.?

Answer»

Hi,
I have a laptop computer with windows vista it has 31 gigabytes on the C drive and I only have 574 MB of free SPACE. I have already defraged and used the disk clean up but can't seem to free up enough space. What is taking up so much space? Can I see everything that is taking up space so I can delete some of it. I already looked at all my programs that are INSTALLED and it only adds up to a little over 2 gigs. Can any one help me to free up some space?

Thank YouProbably system restore. Download treesize and find out for sure (http://www.jam-software.com/freeware/index.shtml)

Regardless of the answer, your hard drive is small by current standards. You might want to consider a larger driver. Quote from: sharper22 on December 23, 2010, 09:26:20 AM

Hi,
I have a laptop computer with windows vista it has 31 gigabytes on the C drive ...
What is the total size of the hard drive?  If your computer came with Windows Vista, I would think you have at least an 80GB hard drive.  So, you may have the option of resizing partitions and making C larger.between the c and d drive I have 65 gigs. How do I resize the partition to make the c drive bigger? You need a third PARTY utility. A good free one is Easeus Partition Manager. While it is a top notch program, you should always backup key data before performing ANY drive level function. Quote

It may refuse to boot at all one day.

In fact it is now discontinued by Symantec. And, although I believe this is not the case in this thread, the last version [8] was only supported for disks "up to 300 GB when the partition is less than 90 percent full"

Solve : Why does my computer not start up properly??

Answer»

recently i have just built my own computer from scratch, when i press the button to start it up the front fan comes on then after 3 seconds it goes off, then comes back on for 20 seconds(in the meantime the hardrive light doesn't comeon) then goes off and comes on but the harddrive doesn't engage boot up the OS,having to switch off at the back of computer then turning on then pressing front on button it comes on(after many goes) full system,I've also taken out the cmos battery and it starts first time but as you know Ive gotta reset time etc. could someone be nice enough to let me know whats going wrong and how can i fix it?Does it make beeping sounds? If so, check it against your motherboard book for the fault area.

If not, your'll probably find it's the PSU (power supply unit) is faultly or just doesn't have enough juice to spread the power (specially if you got a lot of devices or a hardcore graphics card).Wat you describe is classical thermal shutdown. It would indicate that a fan is not working, or the PSU is overloaded.

What tests have you made? RAM? Power voltages? Temps?
Is this a new problem? When did it start. How long  was it working alright?
How long was the burn-in time?
Are you overclocking?
Is the Heat sink properly seated?

Discount ALL drives and try to bring up BIOS. So you have default settings? Time OK?
Can you bring it up with another VIDEO card?

Is this an AMD dual core?

Please start your own thread and explain your problem IN DETAILI would say it doesn't start properly because computer was working on windows 7. I had a windows 7 for one week and only then have understood this was a complete wasting of time and money. I installed vista later on ans SINCE I am happy. Solve : Window Vista Home Premium?

Answer»

Why window vista home premium was bad? It was kind of slow.Aside from putting this in the wrong forum, do you have an ACTUAL issue or are you just complaining? Quote from: greatar4 on November 03, 2010, 08:07:58 PM

You need to describe your complaint in more detail in order to make your post meaningful.  I haven't found window vista home premium to be slow in my laptop which 2GB of RAM and a 1.7 GHz AMD Athlon ™ 64 X2 Dual-Core Mobile Technology TK-53 processor. huh?I don't find windows vista terrible. I have a athlon64 3500+ single core PC with 2.8gb ram.

I think people complained because their computers barely meet the requirements for the decent vista experience.

I didn't like Windows Vista actually. I prefer Windows 7.I agree. Windows vista has worked just great for me. It's funny how people with old computers install a new OS, because they think it will make their old crappy computer better. Then when their computer sucks even harder they blame the OS. Use an OS that is system appropriate or buy a new computer.

Solve : Windows 7 partition formatting problem?

Answer»

I wanted to creat a partiton on Windows MESSAGE but after I PROCESS the formatting through "new simple volume" I get a message as indicated on the video link.

When I click "yes" I get a message" There is no enough disc space to complete the operation"

What can I do? This is a new lap top and I have only one primary partition.

Please the follwoing link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GafkRqHN6JE

answers can be sent to my e-mail: Email removed

Thanks.Too many partitions.

You can have up to four primary partitions on your basic disk. You already have four.

What you can do is delete one of your primary partitions and create a new extended partition in the empty space. You can set up as many logical drives within your extended partition as you like.

Of course, if you want to just use that unallocated spec for the C drive, you could right click on c and choose extend volume.

I'm assuming you don't want to convert your disk to dynamic, since you didn't choose that in the vid.
The video link is not my computer, i post just to show the nature of the problem.

I have only one primary partition and it is a new lap top with 500GB.

I have now about 400GB free space and wanted to create partition. Can you post a screen shot of disk management?Has THER OP already looked at the other videos about Windows 7 partitioning?

Solve : how do i solve window 7 logoff and shutdown problems??

Answer»

my laptop with window 7 dont want to SHUT down until i press the power button.
That's normally how you shut down the computer....You press the power button.

What exactly is the problem? Quote from: Carbon Dudeoxide on May 30, 2010, 09:59:44 PM

That's normally how you shut down the computer....You press the power button.

Really? If you mean the physical one on the front of the computer case, I don't, I go throught the OS shutdown procedure; this might be via the Start Orb/Button or whatever and "shut down", or it might be some command line stuff like shutdown /s or init 0 - it's a habit I got into to avoid crapping all over the file system.
We have to remember ST, Carbon has been using mac hardware lately- you turn them off by pushing the power button and turn them on by throwing them down a flight of stairs.

Turning them on voids the warranty, too.   I love my mac!Funny guys, but irrelevant.

Ramtey, could you explain in detail what it does when you tell it to shutdown? Does it appear to do anything or does it just remain at the desktop and continue running or what?taking of not shutting down well,  I don't know if it's OS related or not. But I remember having old windows OS PC and when I press shut down, it would stop at a message stating that it was safe to shut down and so I had to press the power button to physically turn off the machine.

Quote from: 2x3i5x on June 09, 2010, 06:50:09 PM

That's when the PC in question doesn't support ACPI. before about 1995-1996. (not sure... actually, it might have been a part of APM, but I don't think so, because APM was more a "hey, programs, I'm going to sleep" or "I'm shutting down the hard DRIVE" or whatever. sure, the program could get "warned" that it is happening, but it cannot keep the event from happening or even do very much at all in the meantime.) And of course you'd have to have ACPI enabled properly and the correct settings for shut down to automatically shut down.

Also, W2k and higher hook the ACPI power event so when you press the front panel power button it's like pressing shut down in the start menu. So for all intents and purposes a "power button" shut-down is only dangerous if you force it by holding the button down for 5 seconds. Quote from: ramtey on May 30, 2010, 09:43:11 PM

When you click Start (the blue orb), and then "Shut Down" on the lower-right hand corner of the start menu, what happens?  Does it:

a) Do nothing?
b) Freeze/crash?
c) Actually try to shut down, but gets stuck on "Saving your settings"
d) same as C), but stuck on "Shutting down"
e) same as C), except "Installing Updates" or
f) none of the above

If f), please specify.Go Control/power option..............
and then setup the shut down option.Have you ever tried to shut down Windows, only to have the shutdown sequence hang, or to have the computer reboot instead of shutting down? It is used to return your computer to its original "out of the BOX" state.

Unless you REALLY know what you are doing, you should leave it alone.

This is called peeking at the desktop. There is a Show Desktop button at the right hand end of the taskbar. Left click to show the desktop. Right click to see a menu. It has 2 items. 1: Show the desktop (now). 2. Check/uncheck peek at desktop (when mouse cursor is HOVERED over the button.)

Solve : Blue Screen of Death [BSoD] error. Please help!?

Answer»

Hello,

I want to state my problem directly.
First of all I cant say what my BSoD failure error is cuz I just disabled the aut-restart option in the system properties, so waiting for the UPCOMING error to catch it up!

However I want to state a few things that can/and probably are causing all that damage.

My pc is old 2 YEARS and a half or close to that, I was running on it on Windows XP for over an year and had no troubles then, got the Win7 and was working pretty well too, but after a while my pc started showing me the blue screen of death, dunno why. However, the errors were rare in the begining, like once in a month or twice, then they've started getting more often and often up to now when Im getting it like twice a day or even 3 times/day.

My pc ram memory card of 2GB's got burned a week ago. I was taking a shower and the pc was on, the house power didnt went off (however I got a lot of stuff connected to one jack, like pc, tv, CELLPHONE charger, lamp etc.. etc..) anyways, when I came out of the toilet the pc was shutted down. So, (that never happend before, it was getting restarted but didnt went off) so, I launched the pc, up to the Windows Vista logo it kept getting restarted. I went to the local service, they claimed the ram memory is burned and the ram is causing all the troble. So I fix the ram, I went to the shop buyed a new one - Kingston 2 GB ram memory and now Im back on 3 GB's ram again. The pc is still showing the blue screen of death.

However, when I get the PC from the local service I've noticed something.
The pc case is having 2 slots in the back for my 22" Samsung monitor and all the time I've been using the 1st slot. When I get it back the system colors were more like Magenta, you know... then I switch it to the 2nd, the colors got recovered but the VGA cooler started working on intervals you know, like it's spinning for 20 sec then it stops for half a min and then working for another 20 sec and stops etc... when I link the monitor to the 1st slot now, the cooler is ON all the time but my colors are kinda messed up.
I reinstalled the VGA driver however when I turn on the PC on the begining of the windows Im getting a dialog that my Catalyst Control Center turned off and asking me to debug the problem. I've tried to debug it but nothing happens.

Like I said, Im not aware of what the BSoD error is but I know Im gonna get something else burned inside that case in a short time. So please I need your help urgently!

From my experience so far, I think it's the VGA that causing all that damage but as, Im not an expert in all these things I rely on you guys.

Thanks in an advance,
Mario

P.S. I just want to state that when the BSoD appears it counts up to 100% like quickly (i.e. 20% - 43% - 70 - 90...) and it gets restarted and it SAYS that the ram memory was dumped off or couldnt handle the thing or something like that...One more thing I want to ask is it gonna be of any help if I attach in here some .dmp files I've found in the C:\WINDOWS\Logs?

...and the screen says "Physical Memory Dump"Make sure that the replaced RAM are compatible and that even though they are mobo compatible as much as possible don't mix different RAM products. If you happen to have taken the machine and examined already and prompted for a replacement of memory modules, then have them atleast do a round test for a couple of hours and wait for the symptoms or causes to appear to make sure that its worth it. System drivers, application can also be a problem. well i buyed kingston 2 gb ddr 2 on 800 mhz now only the previous one wasnt kingston and it was on 600+ mhz however the other ram memory of 1gb aint kingston too so the manifacturers were different all the time.

however here's a catch of my monitor what i took today while i had my failure agian!

please help me out.

What kind of burned(appearance)? On win 7 OS?Did you happen to change any BIOS default settings, overclocking while upgrading xp to 7?
Post computer specs and model. If you happen to have 2,3 or 4 slots for memory module, swap RAM to another slot. How long have you used Win 7 before BSOD occured for the 1st time? It might have started from OVERHEAT going to driver conflicts and upgrade.

when scanning is done, go to EDIT - Select All
Go to FILE - SAVE Selected Items, and save the report as BSOD.txt
Open BSOD.txt in Notepad, copy all of the content, and paste it into your next replyWell, i was looking through the crashes individually, and some seem to change. Heres what i got from 7 of the crashes.

hope this code dump helps. Thanks. It has been my experience that when you get multiple and varied bsod's (as is the case here), it may very well be a bad motherboard. I've had to replace a few for this very reason.

You can run a diagnostic on the ram if you like, just in case. But my guess would be the mobo.And/or flakey power...Well, it's certainly easier to check the PS than the mobo - no harm in checking.Ran a Diagnostic check
Got the Error:

Memory integrity test failed.
Faulty RAM. Soo... What? Is there a fix? Or do i need to buy something? You need to get a new stick of RAM. From this Quote
Location=DIMM_B
and this from Dell Quote
Your computer has two user-accessible SODIMM sockets, one accessed from beneath the keyboard (DIMM A), and the other accessed from the bottom of the computer (DIMM B).
it looks like you have two sticks of ram and the second one is faulty. You can get it direct from Dell here. You can also check your local computer shop.
See here on how to replace it. Scroll down to replacing DIMM B.

what are thier functions in a computer? can you help me to understand what there job is in a computer

A function of a computer is to provide a function. So if for example the computers FN and F10 key turns on and off the computers wireless card, then that would turn off/on said function. It makes the computer far more user friendly to have these functions. THANKS for your kind response, the question i meant was what is the utility's functions in Windows 7, LIKE describe some of there functions, & Advantages & Disadvantages of these utility's thanks Quote from: michael meager on November 09, 2010, 09:45:42 PM

Solve : XP DRIVE AND W7?

Answer»

I recently bought my son a new PC for his games. He has an AMD 3500 processor and it wasn't good enough to play the new games. I bought an AMD quad core 2.9 Ghz, 750 GIG HD, 4GB ram computer from HP with Windows 7.

Because he has so many files saved from his other games I want to just install his old hard drive to the new PC as a slave. But can this be done because his old hard drive which is 500 GIG has XP on it.

Thanks for your suggestions.Sure. You won't be able to boot to the XP installation, but you can use it for whatever you like. Unless there's something on it you need, format it (either before or after installing it in the new system).Well that's just it. When he plays these games they leave files on the PC that he needs to continue where he left off on the certain levels. So I wanted to either TRANSFER these files to the new PC or just install the actual XP drive in the W7 PC as a second drive.

So he won't be able to access these files on the XP system booting to the W7 drive?Yes, he should be able to access them.Thank you!Sure. Depending on where the files are you may need to take ownership. Here's how: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308421You could also look into using Windows 7 Easy Transfer Wizard, which was specifically DESIGNED to do pretty much what you have in mind here. (transfer documents, saved games, application settings, etc)

Solve : Laptop says it does not have sound ports, a way to connect to the internet ETC?

Answer»

I TRIED to put a driver on my laptop (which runs Vista) to use my PS3 controller to play a game, all was well and then I got a blue screen with white text. I restart, remove the program in question, then my computer wont detect wireless NETWORKS (and it always can from my room), it says there are no sound DRIVERS (so my volume doesn't work) AND my USB ports are unresponsive.

What can I do?!Try system restore to return to a point before you messed up things. How do I activate the system restore?http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/using-windows-vista-system-restore/Followed it, all that appeared was "Windows restored etc. etc. cause was Blue Screen"

Then it crashed once again with the blue screen saying windows had to shut down.

Solve : cannot retreive files from WD MyPassport portable HD?

Answer»

I used HP recovery system on a failing (Vista) computer to backup all the data files before attempting to 'restore' the system. I backed them up onto a WD 'MyPassport' portable HARDDRIVE. I ended up installing Windows 7 on the machine to try and fix things up. Now I cannot retreive the backed up files back onto the machine. when I try to run the Backup.1 application stored in the folder where the files appear to be backed up, i get told that MSVCR71.DLL is missing and the APP cannot be run. I do not know how to get this dll into my machine. When I open the WD Smartware, it can see that the backed up files exist on the portable HD but it cannot open them or copy them to anywhere else. What exact app was this backup created with ? ?The machine I backed-up from had HP Assist and I beleive that the 'system recovery' options it OFFERED me MAY also have been HP proprietry. Prior to loading Windows 7 over the top of the old OS on this machine, I did retreive files from the backup to the machine. But I cannot retreive files to this or any other machine  now.

Solve : Screwed Up Permissions and Security Settings?

Answer»

Hello. I have been using a new laptop with Windows 7 Home Premium 64-Bit.

TOSHIBA
Satellite L500
Pentium Dual-Core CPU T4400
Fully Up-To-Date

The laptop has been in use for about five months now and almost entirely has only had one profile. On three or so occasions, I would turn on the Guest account for others users to borrow and GAVE it stand account permissions. I began setting up a third account also intended for temporary users. While setting up the account with shortcuts, default programs, etc, I tried to access my personal files using this profile to test if others could edit them. After getting the UAC notice and signing in with my password, I could access my personal files using the second account. I then rebooted the system to see if the password would be needed again in the future, but I was able to access my personal files again on the new count without any password needed.

Now I am unfamiliar with how permissions, security, workgroups, and similar systems work on Windows 7, but I attempted to remedy it myself and ended up SCREWING it up. Pretending my name is Bob, I opened the properties of C:/Users/Bob and made changes in the security tab. About four different categories were available, but they were not profiles. My memory is fuzzy, but I checked Allow to all permissions to groups I think were called Admins, System, and something else. Another category called something LIKE Workgroup I said Deny to all. A warning popped up saying if a profile belongs to multiple groups, the profile is treated under the group most restricted. I accepted and started having issues.

My start menu shortcuts had there icons replaced with white paper, my desktop shortcut vanished besides recycling bin, i was unable to access my own personal profile in my own admin account, etc. After trying other similar remedies to try and fix it, I eventually just used system restore to go BACK to about five days ago; long before i tried adding a new profile or changing any permission settings. While my personal data and programs appear safe and the second account was removed from the sign in screen, I still have issues. I have to jump though hoops to access folders, and I don't appear to have the ability to make changes to the computer. My wallpaper turned into a white screen and I can now change it back although my original wallpapers are still in my files. I can not turn off NOTIFICATIONS in the action center. My iTunes program thinks its opening up for the first time every time I open it. Firefox has an issue and can not open up due to being unable to write a certain file or something. Many other similar issues exist. Simply put, my files are safe but myself and my programs are heavily restricted.

I can provide any other information to help. Thanks for reading.

Solve : DPCs Causing computer to stutter?

Answer»

Hello all,

I have searched all over the internet for a solution to this problem with no luck... I am having an issue with my computer "stuttering", by that i mean, every second or so in random intervals the mouse, keyboard, everything freezes for a split second, then resumes for another second or so and does it again.
I downloaded ProcessExplorer to see what was going on, and every TIME the computer "stutters" the process DPCS shows up at the top for a split second then goes down.
Long story short i traced the problem back and FOUND that it has something to do with the internet. When i disconnect from the Internet via right clicking the Internet Access icon in the start bar and disconnecting, problem solved! no more stuttering, but i cant just keep my internet off all the time, i use this computer for online gaming and banking and such.
Any help would be greatly appreciated =)

Thx,
JamesWhat is an "internet access in the start bar?"
How do you connect to the internet?I connect Via Wifi, on the TASK Bar, right hand side, where the volume icon / windows update icon etc. is.What happens if you use a direct connection (hard wire)?

Solve : black screen and functional mouse?

Answer»

I was using system restore because I was getting some popups after i tried DELETING itunes (keeps asking me to update it). On the second half of the reboot, (which i started in safe mode), my battery disconnected and my computer died. When I tried turning it back on, everything goes smoothly until after the green little loading bar. The screen right after should've been the windows logo and user accounts, but the logo doesn't appear and i'm stuck on a BLACK screen with my mouse still operational. If I LEAVE it alone for a bit the screen saver comes on. I've tried OPENING in safe mode and a bunch of other options (including the f8 options)  It's a 3 year old sony vaio with vista. How can I fix this and if I can't without spending big bucks, how do i reset my hard-d?riveVista Recovery CD....do you have 1 ? ?

Solve : windows would freeze or crash reboot?

Answer»

I recently bought new paets and wrap my new build together.
Everytime i inset a disk to INSTALL windows (vista or 7) it would take about 10 minutes to show up the first screen that direct you if u want to install. After that it would also take a very LONG time to prepare the set up. It took 5 to 7 times to install because of constant freezing in installation in all parts during installation. When it finally installed, inside windows it would eaither freeze or crash i dont know the REASON why. Now, during boot up it would often freeze at the welcome screen and willnot proceed no further.

Solve : FTP connects on server PC, but no other PCs on local network or from outside??

Answer»

Windows 7 FTP server setup with basic authentication and running.

Chrome connects to ftp://192.168.1.101 on FTP server PC.
Other PCs on local NETWORK won't connect VIA Chrome to ftp://192.168.1.101
Outside won't connect to ftp://(whatismyipaddress.com)

Troubleshooting:
Router firewall TURNED off.
Router port 21 forwarded to 192.168.1.101.
Router Internet Filter turned off.
Windows PC 192.168.1.101 firewall turned off.
Shared the FTP file with 'everyone'.

Internet Explorer troubleshooting says:
Windows confirmed that "192.168.1.101" is currently online, but is not responding to connection attempts at this time.
This usually means that a firewall is running somewhere between the two computers and is blocking "FTP service". Windows has confirmed that Windows Firewall on this computer is correctly configured to ALLOW this connection. However, a remote firewall might be blocking your connection.
If you have access to this firewall then configure the firewall to allow connections through TCP port 21. If you don't have access, contact your network administrator or Internet service provider.

Solve : BSOD Error Code?

Answer»

Hi,

I am posting for a friend. He is having major trouble with his laptop. It has the infamous BSOD. He lives in another state, so I had him give me as much info over the telephone. I hope this is enough information.

The message is the usual saying that a problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to the computer. The error code is the following:

STOP:0x000000f4 (0x0000000000000003,0xFFFFFA8003cd1040,0xFFFFFA8003cd10480xFFFF8001352da0)

It is a Dell Inspiron 1545

OS: Vista

He does have all original discs, but the DVD drive will not run either.

If you need more information, I will call him. Is this on a new Hardware(HD,RAM,etc) on the machine or just while using it? I would start by removing(POWER cord unplugged) the DVD drive, use 1 stick of RAM(alternately)and nickel battery upon booting. I will ASK him about the hardware and also give him instructions on removal of those THINGS. Will let you know. Thank you!Courtesy of MSDN;

Solve : Anti-Static question?

Answer»

Hi,

Going to put together my first computer. Components are starting to come in.

I have a Thermaltake V9 Black case. It's all black, inside and out. It must have been dipped. Can't find a bare piece of metal anywhere. Not even inside screw holes or inside of tubular metal. I've also ordered a vinyl antistatic mat with wrist strap. It comes with another wire with an alligator clip on one end and what in the picture looks like some kind of snap to connect to the mat.

I'm planning on laying the case down mostly on the mat leaving some room to put components on the mat also. I'm going to connect my wrist strap to the case.

My question is: Is this black finish on the case going to cause me ESD problems? Should I scrap some finish off in ORDER to connect my wrist strap to the case and the case to the mat?

HarryNo. Look at the case. There are places where screws dig into the case. You can loosen a screw half a turn and hook the clip to it. Or just put a short bit of small copper wire under the crew and tighten it. Now you have a place to hook your ground strap.
It is common practice by some to run a wire to a case crew of everything on the table top to ensure all are grounded to ether. In most installations, the three wire plug should provide a connection to an actual EARTH ground where the MAINS enter the building. Thanks a lot. That's a good idea.

Thanks
Harry

Let the moderator do that. He may wish to keep this thread open. There is more to be said about static discharge and how to handler some parts. Just having an anti-static strap may not be enough. Maybe somebody else shall give details. Quote from: Harryh on December 29, 2010, 06:29:27 PM

'open drive E ': What is drive E? A external drive, second partition or backup partition?

' NOT ENOUGH MEMORY': You mean disk space right?

Well, just open My computer > E: and you should be able to DELETE what you want. But if the E: is your OS partition, i recommend Right clicking on c: > Properties > Disk Cleanup. This should get you 1GB-4BG of free space if you never done it before.Memory and disk space are two different things. TRY using task manager to see what processes are using what you have. Also post how much memory (not hard disk space) you have, your OS etc. That may help get this figured out. Quote

This is my first time here so thank you in advance for any help.  My computer crashed in Sept. since then I have moved from Vista to Windows 7, I had to reinstall the drivers for the webcam but cannot find anything about the microphone.  I have searched the net to SOLVE this problem however I haven't had much luck.  Anyone FAMILIAR with how to solve this? Thanks!
LindaTry this link --> http://www.hotcomm.com/faq/FAQ_trouble_mic.asp
You could also check the documentation or manual of your mobo for any configuration/settings required, just in case.Since it's a Gateway, you might have to contact their support or check their website for the microphone's drivers. If you haven't tried it, you could also try doing a Windows Update and seeing if that helps as WELL, though I imagine going to Gateway's site might be your best bet.

Solve : About resolution problems in windows 7?

Answer»

I have Dell inspiran N5010 laptop with ATI mobility radeon 4650 grapics card(1GB)........ I put windows 7- 32 OS. The resolution in normal mode is ok. But while playing
3D games like NFS, GTA full screen is not come.....  what is the PROBLEM? anyone help me................. I don't KNOW thangaraj. I only PLAY old games. I get them cheap.

In one or two of my games, the only way to get full screen is from a setting within the game itself. Once the game is started, there is a setting for full screen under options or SETTINGS. Could it be something like that? Or perhaps you have to reset the resolution in the game?

Harryk........... I tried.... some games have full resolution. Anyway Thanks and thanks a lot.......

Solve : HP Pavillion Media Center PC memory errors?

Answer»

How long this has been going on I don't know because I use my laptop most of the time. I have Windows Vista and I was planning to upgrade to Windows 7 and FOUND that the computer was shut off... in booting up it stuck at a black screen, but I could see the cursor and move it just fine.  I ran the system diagnostics and found no errors EXCEPT in the memory tests.  I did it 4 times and got 4 different tests that failed.  My question is:  do I need to switch out the memory or could this be a bug/Trojan related issue? Any memory error is a serious matter.
You can make a bookable CD that has a memory test independent of the Windows system. LOGICALLY, a Trojan would not interfere with this kind of test.
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-vista/How-do-I-know-if-my-computer-has-a-memory-problem
The above link is for the general test inside of Vista.
To make a bookable memory test look here.

Solve : Cursor Jumping (NOT bug/glitch) - Windows 7?

Answer»

So I am having some ISSUES and I'm sure that this is more a preference or setting that can be changed somehow, somewhere. This is when the cursor moves to a default yes/no/ok box on a window prompt in most programs. Occasionally this isn't an issue but as a veteran user of windows systems this just simply gets on my nerves very frequently.

Solve : Win7 Won't Recogize USB2.0?

Answer»

I have Win7 64-bit OS, and I've had the software on my PC for my Samsung Phone for quite some time. I haven't used the program for a while, and when I hook up my phone to the USB port, a balloon comes up and says "Installing device driver." After a few seconds it comes back saying: "Cannot install driver for this device." I'm using the same port that I used when I first installed the software for the phone.

When I load Device MANAGER there is a yellow triangle with a " ! " and is LABELED "Mobile USB Modem 1.0" and is listed under "Other devices." All ports on the computer are USB 2.0 compatible. I have tried several times to uninstall and plug in the device so that Win7 can detect the hardware to no avail.

Win7 is up-to-date with all Windows Updates. I cannot understand why all-of-a-sudden it won't recognize the device.

Did you used the software/installer for your Samsung phone on the same OS(win 7) and worked? Have you tried looking up on your BIOS for any USB controller settings? If certain features are on your BIOS settings such as IRQ to USB(from enable to disable), USB Device Legacy Support(enabling), Reset Config Data then you could change either settings and save  and exit. You could also try replacing the software on your phone's support site.  I looked on my BIOS and all the ports are "enabled." Even the ones that have nothing attached to them. I did not see anything about USB Device Legacy Support. You could also see here --> http://support.microsoft.com/kb/927524I downloaded the software, again. Installed it, and now Win7 recognizes the device. Weird!

PROBLEM solved. Thanks JASON!

What to do if HP Pavilion Elite M9500y has a blinking white line in the upper left hand corner?
I have Windows Vista with Norton 360 I believe and it wont GET PAST the start up screen, it only shows two screens before it goes to the white blinking line.
Can anyone help i've been searching for answers on what to do so far I haven't found anything useful.Do you happen to have a Vista CD ? ?I could not find a CD but we found a windows cd for the computer and it wont work for some reason it says that we have a virus and it wont run it.That doesn't make sense at all...

Did you boot to the CD ? ? QUOTE from: patio on December 27, 2010, 07:44:45 PM

That doesn't make sense at all...

Agreed, have you tried just putting the CD in the drive and then booting? There are NO instances where your computer will 'say',  "it wont work for some reason it says that we have a virus and it wont run it". Everything about that sentence is wrong.
The computer on boot has no idea about 'viruses' let alone taking a couple of minutes out to write some new CODE to tell you about it.

Can you be more specific with the error message, it helps to know exactly rather than a 'sort of remembered thing'.Of course, if we consider that the Windows 3.1 floppy setup, Windows 95 CD-ROM, windows 98 and 98SE (the latter of which is bootable) All the way through to XP (at least) will in fact prompt if it detects a TSR program in the background with a message that I believe suggests that the machine may be infected.

And of course the BSOD also includes advice about viruses, I believe.

So yes, if we ignore all that then it's doesn't make sense. This is where I give up... what's the point? BC has it all tuned to place where people like me are irrelevant.  Work away BC, as us lesser mortals are not worthy. Quote

I may be wrong, but I don't recall anything like that.

Solve : protecting my PC?

Answer»

Hi,
I have a W7 starter on an HP.
Norton (preinstalled) which nearly expired.
I use my pc quite often to buy things and for online banking operations.
How can protect it from external dangers?
What antivirus?
what malware programme?
what....what else should I do to protect myself from any danger out there.
Please keep answers simple as I am not an expert in this field.
thank you.
G.  there are plenty of completely free protection programs out there. I'd recommend Avast Antivirus Free EDITION:
http://www.softpedia.com/get/Antivirus/Avast-Home-Edition.shtml

For SPYWARE, you could get either Spybot Search & Destroy…or SUPERAntiSpyware http://www.filehippo.com/download_superantispyware/

Anti-Malware you could get  Malwarebytes from ' http://www.softpedia.com/get/Antivirus/Malwarebytes-Anti-Malware.shtml
For a firewall, Comodo Firewall  is decent, http://www.softpedia.com/get/Security/Firewall/Comodo-Personal-Firewall.shtmlFirst, please do not follow the advice in the above post.

1) First, we recoomend you do NOT use Spybot - it is old school. For malware we recommend MalwareBytes or SuperAntispyware (regardless of what the above post may indicate, the TERM "malware" includes spyware ). You should also use SpywareBlaster

2) There are plenty of threads on this forum asking the exact same question. A search on the forum will answer your questions. However, when choosing an antivirus there are plenty of good choices. My favorite is Kaspersky, but it's not free. Among the better free choices are Avira and Avast

3) Most important is "smart computing" - know where you go on the web, don't open email attachments unless you know the source, etc.

4) Last, whenever possible software should be downloaded from the authors' sites, not from third party sites as indicated in the above post. Quote

Some of your advice was okay, some was not. We do not want posters to have to try to figure out what makes sense and what doesn't. We've had this conversation in the past, haven't we?I do not deny that I followed the scientific advice from you
But what I said. some of the forum
Eventually
Ummmm....... yeah, okay.First, Take an image for your windows 7 in case of SYSTEM failure

http://computeradvisors.net/windows-7/create-a-system-image-in-windows-7/

Second, Install a good anti virus like kaspersky "Commercial" or avira free antivirus

Then, Keep your windows 7 automatic updated and activate windows firewall for all networks.

Concerning maleware and spyware i prefer Malware bytes

Actually, faragas raises a great point. It has long been my opinion that everyone should use disk imaging software on a regular basis. It is definitely something you should look into.

Solve : windows 7 bsod?

Answer»

Hello to all forum members, of bleeping computer. I just need some help regarding on blue screens that I'm experiencing right now. Let me tell you when it started, when I'm using my PC the lcd light goes blink, and the display is gone. Now I think that the cable is not tight, so I properly unplug the cord and plug again. However, every time I reboot and the cpu is RUNNING but not the monitor. I try the process again, and still no LUCK. I tried my monitor on other pcs, and it works. Now I remove my video card. I erase the gold plate and remove some dust. I put it back on the slot it works! After an hour it goes back again, the monitor goes off, and I turn off the cpu by holding the power key. I tried the process much time and still don't work. It happened for almost three weeks now. When I open my PC, I'm surprised that it worked. However, when I'm playing the screen suddenly go "BLUE SCREEN OF DEATH", SCREEN OF DEATH" and I restart. I choose start windows normally, I can play and surf than the bsod came back, and I restart when booting to windows it always shows BSOD. I try to launch the start up repair, and I can use again I use chkdsk it found nothing bad on the system. I check device manager and the hardware peripherals are fine and doesn't have problems. I can't FIGURE out why bsod happens? My PC is fast but its kind of slow bcoz of bsod. I'm using my desktop and still when you are using it, it will go to BSOD. I'm tired of thinking about how to fix it. Please help me. I'm begging.   I hope you understand my english .. sorry im not american.

Solve : I did not do it?

Answer»

I've watched these files in the F:

I did not install it . but last software i installed is office 2007
I did not understand how that happens. And can i delete them safely ?I'd ask whoever else uses the machine...%100  no body It appears they may be remnants from the Visual C + + COMPONENTS of Office...
If you have re-booted a few times and Office is operating properly they can safely be deleted...It looks like somebody, or something, has installed an application which uses the Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime LIBRARY with first (RTM) version which has a bug, namely that it installs its TEMPORARY files in the system root directory and not the temp folder as it should.

Quote

VCRedist from VC++ 2008 installs temporary files in system root directory

Action:

INSTALLING the Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable Package (VCRedist_x86.exe, VCRedist_x64.exe, VCRedist_ia64.exe) for Visual Studio 2008 RTM.

Result:

Following files are generated on the system root directory :

install.exe
install.res.1028.dll
install.res.1031.dll
install.res.1033.dll
install.res.1036.dll
install.res.1040.dll
install.res.1041.dll
install.res.1042.dll
install.res.2052.dll
install.res.3082.dll
vcredist.bmp
globdata.ini
install.ini
eula.1028.txt
eula.1031.txt
eula.1033.txt
eula.1036.txt
eula.1040.txt
eula.1041.txt
eula.1042.txt
eula.2052.txt
eula.3082.txt
vc_redist.msi
vc_redist.cab

Cause:

These temporary files are erroneously generated by the installer into the system root directory instead of the temp directory.

Resolution:

These files are unnecessary and can be safely deleted from the system. The FUNCTIONING of the runtime library will not be affected by this.
Its [sic] a known bug and is planned to be fixed in VS2008 SP1.

I already have the audio driver installed and I have audio.  I WENT to the toshiba website but I dont find drivers that have these names, so where do I GET them from
You need the chipset drivers for that machine...for Win7.
Reboot afterwards.patio,
i already installed the chipset, I also thought that MIGHT fix the problem of the missing drivers.  It didnt.

This is how I fixed it, and got the drivers installed.  I uninstalled both devices in device manager, and then after they uninstalled, I clicked 'scan for hardware changes'  That did it.

Solve : CPU usage is locked at 50%??

Answer»

Hello. Im wondering if there is a possibility that the cpu usage for one program could be locked at 50%? The program is java, and when i try to run a game in it, the game runs slow. so i looked in task manager, and no matter what i do in the game the cpu usage for javaw.exe is 50% all the time. If i EXIT to the menu, it drops to about 20-30%. The game is very cpu intensive, so maybe windows could lock the cpu usage? I do not have any programs installed that could possibly do this, and it only seems to lock this game, other ones can go higher than 50%. Ive tried setting it to high and even realtime priority, to no avail. Also, im thinking that it might be the fact that i have a dual core processor, and java can only use one core? So it only uses 50% because it cant use the second one? Can somebody please clear this up. Thank you in advance. Quote from: maximdymok on November 02, 2010, 11:02:38 PM

You GOT it. That's the reason why. For everybodys info, what game?Ok this is funny, but the game is MineCraft Doesn't require too much video graphics, but is very CPU intensive because of a large number of vertices. Ok, i guess ill have to overclock the cpu, then. Thanks for clearing this up guys.Only multi-core applications and games will use both cores, however for duo core...

Go to Start > Run and type 'Msconfig' without quotes and press 'enter'.
It should display a 'System CONFIGURATION' box, select the 'Boot' tab.

Under 'Boot' select 'Advance Options'
Ensure 'Number of Processors' is ticked and select '2' from the dropdown (in your case being duo core).
Click 'Ok' then 'Apply' and reboot the computer.

This will make sure Windows knows about both cores (normally it will use one for itself and the other for the application/game).

Utter, and complete nonsense. Any Program that uses more than one thread will be able to use more then one core. A Program doesn't have to be specifically designed for Multiple Cores; it has to simply parallelize it's operations in multiple threads. Most Applications separate their "worker" threads from their UI threads (one thread might be processing a video, and the other will be keeping the UI responsive by keeping the MESSAGE pump going).

More nonsense. the "Number of Processors" Box sets the maximum number of processors windows will use. This value defaults to the number of processors available. If the value is higher then the number of available cores, the value is ignored. Putting in the number of cores (2 in this example) will do absolutely nothing. (actually, that's not true, since if the user then upgrades to a quad core they might be wondering why everything seems so much slower)

Solve : "Controling" a BT device results in BTWUIExt process crash.?

Answer»

My issue is when I successfully pair a bluetooth device, regardless of it's type (headset, cell phone, etc).... When I right-click on the bluetooth device, Windows prompts me with: "BTWUIExt is not working" or something along that line.... And crashes.

I have tried to look for ANSWERS online, but haven't GOTTEN a clear direction. I also tried reinstalling the Broadcom Bluetooth drivers from the computer manufacturer's website, but nothing changes.

I'd appreciate any leads or solutions to this annoying problem.

Solve : Start menu won't show submenus for another partition - Win7?

Answer»

Hello. My name is Dean.
I have created a partition for Win7 OS "C:", and another partition for all my data "D:".
I added a shortcut to "D:" in the start menu (in my personal folder).
When I go to my personal folder the link is there but the submenus don't slide out like the local FILES on C:
Can anyone advise me how I can have the submenus slide out on the start menu when the files and folders are in another partition?

I am running Windows 7 Ultimate - 32 Bit

Thankyou.I don't know that you can. After much reading it seems that there is no user friendly way to add libraries to the right-pane !!!

I have worked out how to do it (cheating).

I renamed the video library to "Data".
Start > Right click on the name > Rename.

I then removed the video files and placed my links in the library
Start > Right click on the name > Properties > Include a folder... (Browse for and selected the links) > Optimise this library for: General Items > OK

I can now navigate gracefully through the contents of my "data" partition.

I hope this helps anyone with a similar challenge!

BTW, I did try to "include a folder in my personal library but when I right CLICKED it there was no properties option!
