Solve : ISO Images to USB Drive?

Answer»

I have the ISO images of several discs on my hard drive to install Windows7.  I do not want to burn them all to DVDs, how do I create a bootable USB drive with the ISO images as if they were on one disc? Quote from: et_phonehome_2 on December 28, 2010, 10:05:55 AM

I have the ISO images of several discs on my hard drive to install Windows7.

Are these ISO images of Microsoft Windows 7 install disks?
I think This is applicable in with virtual machines only built with vmware or virtual pc  not physical machinesfaragas, you are incorrect. It is possible to place ISO files, that are images of bootable optical media, onto a USB drive in such a way that they can be selected by a menu and used to boot a real (or virtual) MACHINE. However I wish to hear from the OP his answer to my question before I give any more details, for reasons which ought to be fairly clear.

One would also query why are you trying to boot windows from an ISO file? Did the computer not come with a disk or a partition to boot from?
Again I should say we DO NOT help with pirated versions of any software.
I'm sure I will be POINTED out that Microsoft has now started issuing ISO files as a way to boot but I doubt it.

I understand that the original poster never mentioned a windows install but that was where it was going...

but any file that is a ISO has to be questioned. Quote from: Mulreay on December 28, 2010, 05:16:46 PM

Really? Like a Windows Recovery CD? I have one of those on a pen drive myself.

What did you think I was already doing, Mulreay? Did you ACTUALLY read any of this thread?

I have always copied all my DVDs whether they are ISO images or not to a hard drive just in case they ever go bad or I misplace the originals.  I need to rebuild one of my old machine which had Windows7 installed which has gone bad, and do not feel like burning them to DVDs.

Never mind, I found out how to do it, very similar to Linux.... Quote from: Salmon Trout on December 29, 2010, 12:01:51 AM

Why don't you back up and stop being the person that lots of people hate. I'm fine with going toe to toe fool. I despise people like you... full of mouth and nothing else. Always the attitude and nothing constructive.

Solve : posting problems?

Answer»

I am having trouble posting replies to just one forum (a newspaper site) I use, and the problem only OCCURS when I use my laptop that has Vista OS.  I can POST to that site from other computers in my home as well as from my office computer, none of which use Vista.  Not sure if the OS might be the problem, or coincidence.

I am wondering if Vista somehow has a different way of handling cookies and history than other Windows operating systems?

I've wondered if the problem could be my browser (generally use Firefox) but I have the problem on this computer even if I use IE or Google Chrome; on the other hand, I AM able to post on the site from my other computers using Firefox or other browsers.

I have tried deleting cookies from that site; doesn't seem to make a difference.  Perhaps I am making no sense, but I just cannot seem to figure this out.  If anyone has any ideas please let me know.  If you NEED more info from me, let me know as well.Do you have permission to post on said site? Quote from: Mulreay on November 04, 2010, 03:07:13 PM

Do you have permission to post on said site?
Since he posts on the site from other computers I'm going to guess that he does

car17 - have you contacted the webmaster or admin at the forum in question to run it by them? It is certainly not a problem related to Vista.

Can you log on to the site from the problem system? Quote from: Allan on November 04, 2010, 03:13:34 PM
Since he posts on the site from other computers I'm going to guess that he does

Ahh the old mother of all feck ups is assumption but work away. I was actually being polite to you when I used the word "assume". But since you chose to respond as you did, let me put it this way -- if he can post on the site from every computer but one, clearly he has permission to post there.Yes, I am registered at that site and can log in from my "trouble" computer.  I can visit different pages of the site.  As I said, it is a newspaper, and there is an area for posting responses to each article.  From other computers I can post replies, but from my laptop I cannot.

I can post at other SITES (this one, for example).  I actually have no trouble with any other sites and I can get around that newspaper site just fine - I just can't post on that site.  When I type something in the comment box it shows, and when I hit "add reply" it looks like it is going to post...the site reloads, but the post doesn't show up.  As I said, it works properly from other computers.

I have contacted the website editor, and he doesn't know what's wrong.  APPARENTLY the newspaper is part of another news system and the local guy doesn't know the tech side.  Maybe I need to ask him how I can be in touch with someone in the systems tech dept.

Very strange, I think, and I was hoping someone would have some idea of what the problem might be.

Thank you to those of you who have replied.

Solve : deleting previous version?

Answer»

Hi am using WINDOWS 7. i would like to delete the previous version of uTorrent folder. how to do it?
the folder appears in c drive under appdata. when i right click the properties it shows me a folder under the previous version. options are available to restore and open it, but there is no option to delete it. the folder has the list of torrents i downloaded before installing new version and i dont want anyone to see it.Hold the shift key, and drag it into the recycle bin. it will ask if you permanently want to delete? click yes. Am not able to drag the previous version. the new folder can be deleted. but each time i download something in TORRENT another new folder is created under which the properties again DISPLAY the previous version folder.Try deleting them in safemode...
Get rid of utoorent if you want a clean machine....Uninstalling Utorrent won't make your pc cleaner.

For the original poster, there is third PARTY programs like Revo uninstaller that allows you to delete anything related to one program. In this case Utorrent. It should delete everything related to Utorrent. Then reinstall it.

Do and Advanced Uninstall to remove everything. From Windows Help:

Quote

How are Previous Versions created
Previous versions are automatically saved as part of a restore point. If system protection is turned on, Windows automatically creates previous versions of files and folders that have been modified since the last restore point was made. Typically, restore points are made once a day. If your disk is partitioned or if you have more than one hard disk on your computer, you need to turn on system protection for the other partitions or disks. Previous versions are also created by Windows Backup when you back up your files.

Notes: Revo Uninstaller will not remove the Previous Version folders. They don't want to remove the current folders, they want to remove the previous ones; these aren't stored anywhere "near" (filesystem wise) the actual folder; they are stored as part of system restore points in System Volume Information.

Because restoring previous versions is really part of system restore (you restore previous versions of the select files, but they all exist in system restore points) you cannot really selectively delete only the previous versions of a single folder.

You can remove ALL previous versions of all Folders by doing this:

  • Click start
  • Right-click computer
  • Click properties
  • Click System Protection in the left pane
  • Uncheck the drive you want to remove previous versions for
Note that this will of course remove all restore points as well.

To make this easier, you can use the built-in Windows Disk Cleanup utility:

  • Start Disk Cleanup
  • Choose the "More Options" Tab (you may need to choose the "Cleanup System Files" button on the first tab to run disk cleanup as an admin for this to work properly
  • In this tab, there is a frame titled "System Restore and Shadow copies" There, choose the "Clean up" button. This will (after confirming a "do you want to continue" prompt) delete all but the most recent restore point.

Note that if you delete all but the last restore point, there will still be a single previous version of SAID folder. However, if you were to delete the folder, and then create a NEW restore point, and then delete all but the most previous (the one just created) there will no longer be previous versions for that folder that contain files from before that restore point.

Another benefit to this is that you get a lot of disk space back. I recovered over 100GB by following these steps myself (to make sure that previous versions for certain folders I was checking were in fact gone). Which is rather nifty.

Solve : Wireless problem, Vista and 7?

Answer»

Strange wireless problem, hope you folks can help. A client calls and tells me his wireless connection does not work any more. I figure it to be that annoying switch that turns off the wireless card. Nope, that is still on. Then maybe the router is not connected to the cable modem? Nope, his desktop computer is online.

I go to check it out and sure enough no wireless connection. The laptop and second wireless desktop see the network but when they try to connect nothing happens aside from a window saying they are not connecting.

In the network section for the laptop it showed   Client laptop------X------Internet

Some fiddling got it to show   Client laptop-----"yellow triangle"------Unidentified Network------X------Internet

We tried restarting the router, restarting the router and modem, rebooting the laptop and restarting all THREE. The best it ever got was Limited or No Connectivity. The WPA2 key was checked and rechecked and re-entered multiple times with the LETTERS showing just to be sure.

Laptop - brand new Lenovo, core2duo, 7 Home premium
Desktop - Sony Vaio all-in-one, Vista Home premium
router - brand new Linksys WRT160NL

There is also a Macbook in the house, but that connects without problem.

All of the wireless computers were working flawlessly for the last 3 weeks and now just the Macbook connects.

Any ideas on this?

ThanksDid it ever work?
How long has this been happening?
Any new hardware or software?ok, yeah they worked when set up three weeks ago
the new hardware is the Lenovo and the Linksys, both received 4 weeks ago
the only new software is what came with the Linksys
the connection went on the fritz this past Wednesday.1. Click Start>Run (Start>"Start search" in Vista).

2. Type in (or copy and paste):

          cmd /c ping google.com>%temp%\$.$&notepad %temp%\$.$

      and press Enter.

3. Notepad will open.

4. Copy all text in Notepad ([Ctrl-A], then [Ctrl-C]), and then post it (paste = [Ctrl-V]) in your next reply.
Hi, very nice. I will send this to the client. I won't be getting back to him before maybe Tuesday. The ip that he was getting was 169... and unless something radically changed in the last 24 hours the Notepad file will show that.
I simply want to see, if there is connection, or browser problem. We tried with both IE and Firefox, didn't have Opera, Safari or Chrome installed so could not check them. I sent the instructions off, now just to wait for the response.Yeah, the above script will let us know, if any connection is there. Finally got an answer:

"Ping request could not find host google.com.  Please check the name and find again

Note - MEANWHILE the other wireless computers in the house have been connecting and disconnecting randomly. "

Quote

meanwhile the other wireless computers in the house have been connecting and disconnecting randomly
It's time to call ISP.Wouldn't the desktop computer also be experiencing problems? What about running the router installation again and making another ssid?Since all wireless computer are experiencing similar problems, it may be a router issue.
Try to hardwire couple of wireless computer to the router, or even straight to the modem and see they'll connect. The laptops all connected to the internet when wired to the router. They stayed connected with no DROPS. Is it possible for the router software to become corrupted? SEEMS a little soon considering the age of the router. What about deleting the network and reinstalling?

Try to reset router.

Turn the computer off.

On your router, you'll find a pinhole marked "Reset".
Keep pushing the hole, using a pencil, or a paperclip until all lights briefly come off and on.
Restart computer and see what happens.

NOTE. You may need to re-check your router security settings, as described HEREWell that looks like the plan for tomorrow. I will let you know how it goes. More than likely posting from his house.

Solve : Memory leaks.?

Answer»

So I got a new computer since my old one is dead.  Someone bought it for me before I had time to think through my NEXT COURSE of action in regard the situation, it works great but now I'm having really bad memory leaks from something I installed because it wasn't doing this until I got a bunch of my old programs installed that I used on my 32bit computer.  A lot of the used up memory is not showing up in the task manager as being used by anything so I assumed it's a memory leak.  I've gotten up to 68% memory used out of 8GB of memory with just the basic Windows components and programs running and nothing else after I've been using Firefox and Vuze and Windows Live Messenger for a while.  I was thinking maybe it was my virtual instruments that I only have 32bit copies of that complain about there not being enough memory even when most of it is but it doesn't look like they're the culprit.  Is there a program out there that can help track down what is causing me to have memory leaks in Windows 7?  Also is there a program (hopefully the same one) that can free up this wasted memory?  My available memory keeps steadily going down rather quickly as Windows 7 is running and I can't figure out what program is causing it.

As I wrote this, the available memory went down 2% already. Are you experiencing any problems with the SYSTEM? If not, don't worry about how Windows manages memory. Not really, no problems so far; admittedly I'm new to Windows 7 so I guess I was making incorrect assumptions.  I'll report back if I start having problems when and if it gets up to around 100%.  I was just concerned because my virtual instruments use up a lot of memory to run and their usage seems to stack on top of the already used memory.use "show processes from all users".

you'll see that the memory is consumed by a svchost process. That service HOST hosts the superfetch service.Wow I didn't even see that button in the task manager.  I'm so blind sometimes.   I was watching my task manager and actually some RAIDXpert.exe was CONTINUALLY eating up RAM so I killed it and I'm going to see if my system runs stable without it for a week or so before I take further action.LEAVE IT ALONE!!!But I don't have a RAID array and it's using up nearly all my RAM after a day.  I can't accomplish what I intend to do with the computer if it's left alone to do that.  I mean I think nearly all my 8GB of memory being used up where I can't use it for some feature I don't even have is unreasonable. You already said you are not experiencing any issues with the computer. If that is correct, move on.At some point in time someone attempted to setup a RAID array on that system...

A clean wipe and install may be the way to go here...

Solve : win 7 ram help?

Answer»

Can win 7 pro  see more  ram  then  win 7 UltIt depends on if it's 32bit or 64bit...

Has nothing to do with Win7Right ARM... only 64bit will recognise the full CAPACITY. QUOTE from: patio on December 24, 2010, 09:28:32 PM

It depends on if it's 32bit or 64bit...

Has nothing to do with Win7

Actually, It does

Windows x64 versions will see more  then then 3.5GB of RAM, but that limitation is a purely artificial one that the 32-bit versions have hard-coded into them, for driver compatibility purposes. 32-bit processors can access pretty much any conceivable amount of RAM- but earlier on Drivers were often written to a number of assumptions that are pretty much blown out of the water when there is more then 4GB or so of memory.

Case and point: 32-bit versions of LINUX have no problem accessing 8GB of memory and more. Of course, for Linux backward compatibiltiy just means the various tools having the same SWITCHES as previous versions, and means nothing in the context of drivers, which you have to recompile for each kernel half the TIME anyway.

personally I like the windows tradeoff better.

Solve : Cannot Re-Format exFAT to NTFS?

Answer»

Hi EVERYONE! ^_^

So, I have this 500 GB external hard drive, which is formatted in exFAT with my Vista.  As we all know, Windows XP can't read exFAT.  But I want to use that external hard drive to transfer files from my Vista computer to my WinXP computer.  So I tried using Vista to re-FORMAT the external hard drive into NTFS.

EDIT:: [Oh yea, sorry about this, but I forgot to mention earlier.  During my first attempt to re-format the hard drive, my sister shut down the Format tool before it was even done.  Does interrupting a format ruin a hard drive?]

Since then, all my attempts have resulted in failure. v_v  The "Formatting Removable Disk" function goes all the way to the end, then announces that the format has failed.

PLEASE help...  Are there any other programs that I can use?  Or am I formatting it wrong?  Does anyone ELSE have the same problem as me???  Any help at all is greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance. ^_^ Is the drive old? Did it work right before you tried to format it? Have you tried to format it using XP?

If all else fails I would download the disk tools and check the drive.

The drive is not that old.  I got it for Christmas.  It worked properly before.  I had some files saved in it, that I wished to transfer to the WinXP computer.  Then I realized that XP can't read exFAT, so I wanted to reformat it to NTFS.

But now, even that computer with Vista keeps saying that it's not formatted when I click on that drive under "My Computer".  (Obviously, I moved those files out beforehand lol.)  Meanwhile, when I tried using the XP computer to re-format it, the drop down menus, that ask which kind of file system and allocation unit size, in the format function show up blank; and the "Start" button is grayed out.

I think I will try downloading the disk tools, as you've suggested.  (Uh...  Where can I download it?)From the Drive manuf. site...You can use the exFat on Windows XP by downloading it from Microsoft

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?FamilyID=1cbe3906-ddd1-4ca2-b727-c2dff5e30f61&displaylang=en

To convert the drive to NTFS from exfat:

1.  Open Windows Explorer

2. Left click mouse on the drive you want to format.

3. The drop down menu will appear go to the bottom to properties and left click mouse.

4. In the properties area go to the Tab [HARDWARE] and left click the mouse.

5. Go down the LIST and find the drive yo want to format to NTFS, left click the mouse on the drive.

6. Click on the button Properties.

7. Click the TAB [Policies], change the Optimize for quick removal to Optimize for Performance.

8. Click the OK button on both widows to close them.

9. Go back to the windows explorer and right click the mouse on the drive you just changed.  Click on Format, in the drop down you will now have NTFS, FAT32, and exFat.

10. Change to NTFS and press the START button.

Solve : Windows 7 [64bit] Errors out the wazoo?

Answer»

I just installed Windows 7 on to my new rig and I am have tons of issues.
At first Windows wouldnt install at all, after spending time with Microsoft support we confirmed my hardware was good except one stick of memory that seemed to cause the issue. After removing it everything installed ok.

Now however, everything I download seems to end up corrupt. I am using Google Chrome as my browser.

Some examples:
Installing Steam - Unable to process certain data
Installing AVG Free - Message "FILE is corrupt"
Winamp - Installed, but immediately shuts down on startup
Installing Battlefield Bad Company 2 - DISC error
Installing drivers for GPU - Installation file invalid

Also Chrome has been GIVING me the "Whoops" page very frequently. I've never had these issues before so I feel its related to the new OS. Any suggestions?

[Edit]

Now every time I go to open a program I get "Windows Explorer has stopped working"The first thing I would do is to do the same with IE or Firefox and see what happens. Quote from: rthompson80819 on January 03, 2011, 05:16:24 PM

The first thing I would do is to do the same with IE or Firefox and see what happens.

Firefox CRASHES instantly on startup.

I tried  DOWNLOADING and installing steam with IE and it worked.

Whats this mean?

Tried installing iTunes and IE kept crashing when clicking download.

Solve : Safe mode with Command prompt doesn't work....?

Answer»

Hope the subject makes my problem clear to you all !!!

But still here is the same for you....

When I boot the computer and press F8, it shows options to boot in various modes...

I choose "Safe mode with Command PROMPT".

But instead of DISPLAYING me the command prompt on the login screen  it shows me the normal login screen....

What should I do to RESOLVE the issue? I want the command prompt please somebody help me !!!!!!!!!

All your replies are much much appreciated and lots of thanks in advance !!!!!!!!!I could be WRONG (I haven't tried this yet), but I think using that option in Vista/7 results in a logon screen prompting you for administrative credentials before you can get to the command prompt. Thanks for the reply DUDE....
Yes you are right...
But the same happens when we try to open the recovery console using the Windows CD or the option "Repair your computer"....
I have tried with "Safe mode with Command prompt" and it has displayed the command prompt on my friend's computer but doesn't display it on mine.....

Hope you get my problem... Yeah???
Can you not login because you don't know the password.
Why do you need to get to the command prompt? Can you not just start the PC normally. No dude....
I just want to know why the Command prompt doesn't appear when we try to boot the computer in "Safe mode with Command prompt" .....

the purpose is to reset the password from the command prompt in case th user is not able to log in.....

So let me get this straight:

When you start up the computer in Safe Mode with Command Prompt, you get the logon screen.

When you enter a CORRECT user name and password, you get the Windows Desktop?  That doesn't make sense.

If you boot from the Windows 7 DVD and try to get to the command prompt, you're asked for a user name and password.  When you put in correct credentials, you get the normal desktop?  That doesn't happen.  Period.

Now...the reason your friend gets the command prompt and not a logon screen is because he/she has a blank admin password, and, as a result, does not get asked for credentials.so did anyone ever find the answer to this issue - I can't find it anywhere else! It's right above you...

The Admin settings on each machine are different.I think I need to make myself clearer.
I changed my windows password last night. I know exactly what I changed it to but it won't work (nor will the old password) so now I am locked out of windows. I tried the safe mode w command prompt - but it does not bring me to command prompt - it brings me to the user id screen & asks for my password - which puts me back to square one.
If the answer was right above me I must be blind or stupid (both are possible I guess).
Can someone give a step by step answer to this dummy pretty please??

Solve : windows old problems?

Answer»

hi ... the problem for me is that i was going to install  windows 7 but after upgrading my files it paused  maybe of some incorrpourt FILE ( they is no bugs in my laptop) there is also tons of files but i knew ... all the time in the WORLD ain't gonna fix it... so i manually customized it using advanced methods.. it basically done the same thing just not upgrade any files but it still copyed them and put them in a folder called windows.old. however now it has seperated old windows programs from the new ones. i have clicked on these programs but after once opening them each folder then comes up with an error message. some go on about side by configuration is incorrect. and some say abou a win32 app. others want you to connect extension files (broken files) but still ends up in one of the error messages. like one goes on about dvd.pharse and i try to connect it but then it says reinstall the program.  i don't wanna do that incase i may have to buy it again.  some work perfect like FROSTWIRE and cheat engine but when dragged most of them to the desktop after reboot they not they and back in the usual place. puttin them in a new folder will be classed as moved and again typical error messages...  any ideas. do i delete the old folder  or get rid of some files reinstall them... does the whole of windows NEEDS to be put it again despite the one time activation and product keys.... ( meaning buy a dif version of windows ,another one or get new Lincense ,serial number or and product key )  and what's the different between product keys and activation keys too.... usually you just put in a product key but installing win 7 it goes on about an activation key too.  i know one you have to activate but there is one all numbers and one a mix of both.... anyway mainally what's the answer to the problemWindows is not a "one time activation" OS. It IS however a one PC OS. Once you install it onto that hardware, the activation key is generated depending on yout hardware itself, so backup your files to an external source, and perform a clean install.

I went to use my help and support on my brand new computer and this is what it tells me,  anyone know why?   Topic not found.

The topic you are looking for is not available in this version of Windows. For additional assistance, see More support options.
If this is an HP computer, and it's HP's help and support you are trying to get to, you may need to do a REPAIR install. But if it's brand new you should be using the warranty. Have you done a Windows upgrade or anything like that? This is a known HP problem when people apply the free Windows 7 upgrade.

Open Help and Support from the Start menu. The lower RIGHT corner will have a dropbox for "Online Help" QUOTE from: danyjjb on January 03, 2011, 02:50:39 PM

No upgrade,  Brand new computer, tried the online help, I click on it but nothing happens.Well, I don't know if this is relevant, but I have had a Windows 7 64 bit machine for 10 months. Just now I went to the Start Menu, chose Help And Support, and clicked on "Get Online Help" ... and nothing happened. I think this is something that you may have in a preinstalled PC but not otherwise.

I just tried it now and it showed the main Windows help page fine.

If you click the 'online help' button in the bottom right, you see a menu where you can check "Get online help" or "Get offline help". If you have checked online help you see what I see below the central horizontal line. If "Get offline help" is checked you don't get the "Featured this month" ITEMS. Nothing actually "happens" apart from that.

Solve : RPC Server Unavailable?

Answer»

I'm running Windows Vista Home Basic. A week or two ago, the computer froze up and I could do nothing but shut off the laptop by holding the on/off BUTTON down until it closed everything. Since that time I've nothing but problems. I tried "System Restore" and got an error message that the files were corrupted; I tried my restore disks and received an "Error 1005" while running Disc #5 of 7. When I selected "Cancel" I was asked to insert Disc #6; and the re-installation continued. However, my sound card was no longer recognized, and I could not download any files from the internet, including .jpg files sent via e-mail. I was able to re-install the sound drivers and to restore my sound; but now when I start up this laptop I get the message: "RPC Server Unavailable." What does it mean and how do I solve this problem?
You have 7 Vista discs ? ?
Where are they from ? ? ?The seven disks were made by me immediately FOLLOWING the purchase of the laptop. The instructions were for me to copy the files in the "System Restore" partition of the hard drive; that's where they came from. Because my laptop doesn't have a DVD-writeable system, I had to use CD's; and it took seven disks to record the files. There is no reason on earth for them to have been corrupted, but Disk #5 gave me the "Error 1005" message (and I don't know what THAT means either). are you aware that if the recovery disks work, you will probably lose all your data?Yes, absolutely. I have always saved my work to an external hard-drive for that eventuality. By the way, the data are lost even when all the disks DON'T work, because the first step is formatting. If you contact the laptop manuf. they should be able to ship you a restore CD for a nominal shipping charge...
Have your Model and serial #'s handy when you call...Of course the first thing I did after encountering such difficulties was to call HP Customer Support. They talked me through steps that I had already UNDERTAKEN. (I'm not a novice.) They told me that since the computer is out-of-warranty I would need to order restore disks (at a cost of approximately $16.00). Since I reside in Mexico, the shipping would more than likely be more than the cost of the discs. I've had a fair amount of success without them, but this RPC server problem has me stumped; that's why I came to this forum. As a SIDE issue, I might mention that the HP Total Care Advisor (program) also no longer functions. I've restored an older model HP laptop that I will use while this one is "sick"; in the meantime I'll try the restore discs I have once again. I really thought somebody on this forum would have enough expertise to offer a real solution.Having expertise and solving the issue are two different things here...
We don't for instance have any control on how the Recovery CD's were burned for example since we weren't there...
The fact that they contain errors could be attributed to any number of variables including but not limited to :
A) Were they burned properly ?
B) Was it a slow enough burn rate to ensure a quality burn?
C) Was a decent blank media used which can also affect backup quality ?
D) Was the burner itself experiencing no issues that would result in reliable media being produced ?

In other words it could be any number of factors in dealing with your machine's issues that don't neccessarily involve expertise but a hands on approach to what went wrong...
If you think we are the villians in this than so be it.

Why not ask HP if a DLoad is available since you are in a remote location ? ?
BTW this isn't the fault of our expertise either...we didn't send you to Mexico.

If all this produces no results you are entitled to a full refund for using our services.
Just fill out the Form in triplicate and it will be on the way.Patio, I don't know what your problem is and why your attitude stinks; but you definitely need an adjustment. You are supposedly a "GURU"? From what I've seen of your attitude and your rude and inconsiderate remarks, my 7-year-old grand-daughter would be as useful. You have no cause to question my abilities in burning disks; novices can do that much. The hard-disk was also corrupted; I suppose you want to make that my fault, too? I came to this forum for assistance, not for childish insults. I thought someone out there might have encountered this problem before me and would give me guidance in its solution. So far, nothing you've contributed has been worth what I've paid -- zilch! Exactly what your comments are worth! Go back under the rock you crept from. Sorry.derlehrer- what patio speaks is true.

if a CD has a "read" error, it is either defective media, or a bad burn. Even the most reliable burning program - (in this case, probably the recovery CD/DVD creating program... couldn't vouch for the reliability of any of those) - can hiccup on a disc.

lastly, how about strolling into good old Services.msc and making sure your RPC services are started. - and even better, take a look at the programs that are running at start-up; they might need a trim.

not for childish insults

and where, pray, are these childish insults?

Quote
I really thought somebody on this forum would have enough expertise to offer a real solution.

which, I think patio explained well enough. The basic idea is- we weren't there. we don't know the conditions of the burn or what condition these discs were stored. what brand they are, what brand the burner was, and any number of details. If you think that "RPC Server unavailable" means a simple fix- it doesn't. It could be any number of issues with the various services and processes interoperating. I think one of the RPC services was disabled or stopped- if stopped, it begs the question as to what stopped it- a remaining malware process may be running on startup... thus that suggestion. However- given the neccessity to skip a entire CD worth of Image information- it's possible that the OS is missing critical files (such as the RPC services).

Quote from: derlehrer on January 18, 2009, 06:32:26 PM
The instructions were for me to copy the files in the "System Restore" partition of the hard drive

Does this partition still exist? If so- why all this dilly-dallying about with the discs? (or was this what got corrupted as well?)

Quote from: derlehrer on January 19, 2009, 08:58:51 AM
I really thought somebody on this forum would have enough expertise to offer a real solution.

your OS is missing ~700MB of image information. the real solution involves getting that disc again, or getting an entire Vista DVD. In this case the Restore CD cost + the shipping charge looks like a mere pittance especially compared to a new Vista DVD- especially since you couldn't use the Vista DVD to begin with.

Since your missing an entire CD worth of image information- your OS is missing critical components that simply placing a check in a checkbox or installing some special utility will solve. This is why the "real solution" of acquiring the CDs was presented.

If a CD says it has problems- it has problems. Wether they developed during the burn or during storage or whatnot is irrelevant- the fact remains that the disc is unusable and the only appropriate attack vector is to get the discs for the manufacturer, a proposal you've shot down several times due to shipping costs.Wow! It's been almost two years since I posted my question -- and none of the experts or the "advice" I received has helped!!!

I solved the problem on my own, but I find the attitudes expressed towards my problem to be less than understanding and less than  helpful and less than courteous!

It doesn't matter if "He's right!" If there aren't solutions available "He" should keep "His" comments to "Himself"! And that goes for you, too!

Instead of suggestions for solutions, you folks want to point the finger at the victim and say: "It's your fault! We don't know what you did, but it has to be your fault!"

Well! That's a real incentive to come back! I sure am glad I found this place!!

It's too bad you were so quick on the trigger and missed my edits. Go back and look again.

Apparently your modus operandi is to dodge the question, to place blame on the person who has a problem, and to offer absolutely nothing of substance, insulting posters as you go. What are you -- 16 years old?

My "sig" is exactly right. To paraphrase: "Progress depends upon those who question the 'authorities'!"

Who needs this C*R*A*P? Quote
"It's your fault! We don't know what you did, but it has to be your fault!"

Let's see, skipping over 700MB of the image data on a windows disk and assuming the OS will work fine?

Assuming that the problems you have couldn't possibly be related to that missing data? And even getting testy at the mere implication that that is the cause?

Assuming that the reason you couldn't use those disks you had to skip couldn't possibly be from a defective media or a bad burn or simply damage that occured in the interim? That's also a false assumption.

Which basically says "I deserve to have my problem solved by you all for free! Somebody with "expertise" is required obviously because my problem could not in any circumstance be caused by my skipping some of the recovery disks! Nor could that requirement to skip those disks be caused by problems with the disks! Clearly I just need somebody to tell me what box to check or uncheck! It's a simple problem with a simple solution!"

So, you have Windows ME.  Why did you post this in the Windows Vista and 7 forum?

I think you're GOING to have to put a lot more effort into describing your problem and I suggest you put more effort into the grammer of your posts in the forum.   Also many later applications designed for XP and later don't actually make sure you are TRYING to install or run them on XP or later. This means it will give you errors like "cannot find DLLEntryPoint X in file.dll"; This does not mean your operating system is corrupt or missing files, it means the program simply wasn't designed with the possibility that somebody would run it on an earlier Operating System in mind.it worked b4 there were no error messages

Solve : No sound on Vista??

Answer»

Ok, firstly, I dont know if this is a problem with Vista, the sound drivers on my computer or something else, so please bear with me.

As of last night, I havent been able to get any sound to play through the inbuilt speakers on my LAPTOP (Its a Dell Studio 15, about seven months old). System sounds however, are playing.  I checked on the volume control panel, and it says that the sound is being played on "INdependent (R.T.C) Headphones (IDT High Definition Audio CODEC)" however, I dont have any device like this, or any type of headphones attatched.

How do I correct this, so that the sound PLAYS through my speakers, and not this other device?

Thanks
Was it working before? Is this while playing audio CDs on cd/dvd drive or on any media player(ex.winamp, win media player)with saved audio files(mp3,mp4) on your computer? Have you check your Device Manager for that matter?
Go to your Control Panel and click on Sounds and Audio Devices
Click Audio tab and under Sound playback, check on default device(?) click down arrow to know if there are other default device available aside from the ONE you mention. Or you could click on Advanced... and under Speakers tab, Speakers setup, click down arrow key to choose Laptop Speakers and click Apply. Quote from: jason2074 on October 30, 2010, 02:49:42 AM

If you want previews of Firefox tabs like Internet Explorer...
  • In the address bar of Firefox, type "about:config" and press enter.
  • In the "Filter" text field, type "browser.taskbar.previews.enable".
  • Double-click "browser.taskbar.previews.enable" in the list below to set it to true.

Solve : another Windows 7/NVidia problem?

Answer»

Hi Everyone:

Yesterday I installed Windows 7 onto an HP Pavillion 9700 laptop which has an NVidia GForce on the motherboard.

When I plug the HDMI cable from the TV to the PC, there's just a black screen w/HDMI2 showing in the upper left corner. In Vista, everything was A-OK.
The computer doesn't recognize the NVidia as such and simply refers to it as Standard VGA Graphics Adapter.
Windows says that there is not update for this driver and the NVidia Control Panel "does not exist".

Connect to an External Display does not recognize the TV. Can't add another monitor.

I've seen some discussion of what sounds like a similar problem here, but haven't yet found a solution that works for me.

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated

Are you sure there is no graphic driver updates?
Check Windows Update as there would be graphic driver updates if needed.

Also may I ask what Nvidia Graphics card it is?

Properties returns the following: "Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43)"

HDMI is plugged in; unit has been rebooted. Still no recognition of external TV. My sense is that the install has not occurred because 1] rightclicking the desktop does not yield NVidia Control Panel (unless its not viable w/W7) and 2] the release date of the updated driver is later than the date shown in the existing driver's Properties.

Whats the point of windows update then? Explain that hotstuff

Updating windows.

Not drivers. the driver updates exposed by windows update essentially update the generic, one-shot backup drivers that come with windows. They will be by definition at least a few months older then the ones available from the manufacturer.

Also, every TIME I "updated" a driver through windows update I have lost functionality or the device stopped working altogether. This happened on three separate occasions where the device was working perfectly fine before "updating" it's drivers.

Here's the latest:

1. Spoke w/HP. Apparently, there is no W7 update for the driver. According to them, the driver should be OK.
2. There is a Rev A to the original driver. It downloaded it but it won't install.

When I had problems with the driver a year ago, I took the unit to HP where they played around with it for a while and finally got it to work after a Vista re-install. What I only came to realize later on was that the reinstall was 32 bit, whereas it was 64 bit from the factory.

This leads me to speculate that if I was running 32 bit W7 instead of 64, that the problem might be resolved.

Does that make any sense? Quote from: BC_Programmer on October 26, 2010, 12:42:56 AM

Ok then patio when do I earn the right?  If you are running a 64 bit operating system then you will need a 64 bit driver.

I have a laptop with Windows 7 in French and I want to CONVERT it to English language. I have purchased a retail copy of Windows 7 (English version) and intend to install it. Can I just install it over the French version or do I have to do a clean install? It would SAVE an awful lot of hassle if it would just overwrite the existing OS. Does anybody know?Well, I guess you can try an "Inplace Upgrade" and see what happens. Worst case is it won't WORK and you'll have to do a clean install.

NOTE: I've never run ACROSS this particular question before, so I'm just throwing out an option - but it's as much informed guesswork as not.For the benefit of anybody who has this problem in the future, I just tried this and it will not allow me to install (Upgrade) Windows 7 with a language different to that which is already on the computer. Bummer!Yeah, thought that might be the case. Sorry - and thanks for letting US know. Quote from: rbanne on January 06, 2011, 12:27:26 PM

At the point you are doing the Upgrade install did you choose to delete and recreate the existing partition ? ?
If not thats why it did not work. Quote from: patio on January 06, 2011, 01:24:30 PM

I think we were trying to find a way to not blow away the existing installation if at all possible - which it turns out cannot be done (absent a parallel install).

If I can you tell me if there is a good website with easy instructions. I can't access the recovery partition that came with this computer.I don't know anything about downloaded copies of Vista.

When you say "clean upgrade" do you mean you formatted and installed Windows 7 from scratch or did you upgrade an existing Vista installation?

After installing W7 did you install an anti virus utility?I didn't format vista, I upgraded vista with custom install win 7 which erased DATA and programs and kept the old files in windows.old file for rcovery.
I installed all my other programs and norton 360 from symantec.
Okay. Have you downloaded and installed all Windows 7 drivers for your hardware, starting with the chipset driver?well you really got me with the chipset word. I am a graphic person not a super tech like you (One can only wish).
I POPPED in the window 7 upgrade and followed instructions. Now it get stuck up on shutdown as well.
I just about to paint it blue and toss it to the ocean - before I do it is it possible to roll it back to vista by giving it to someone to format it for me?After installing any Windows OS on any system you need to install the chipset driver followed by all other hardware drivers. You can obtain the chipset driver at either your computer manufacturer's website or the website of your motherboard manufacturer. It is strange that the upgrade system didn't mention it.  I don't know even how to find who is the chipset. Solve : System File Checker Is Only 98% Complete When Done??? Where's 100%????

Answer»

Hello. I have a question I hope you can answer. I need to know why and how I can fix when I get the message when I run System File Checker in CMD (When run as a System Administrator.):

Verification 98% complete.
Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations.

Yes, it stops at 98% complete and basically says everything is okay, but this scan is not complete. How come it does not complete to the *FULL 100%* I need to know why this is happening and what I can do to get a *full 100%* scan complete from now on? Please reply. I am using Windows 7 Professional.

Please reply.

Thank you! While I was Googling for the answer I found you have ASKED this on at least 3 forums.

Which mode are you running SFC in?

Code: [Select]SFC [/SCANNOW] [/VERIFYONLY] [/SCANFILE=<file>] [/VERIFYFILE=<file>]
    [/OFFWINDIR=<offline windows directory> /OFFBOOTDIR=<offline boot directory>]

/SCANNOW        Scans integrity of all protected system files and repairs files with

/VERIFYONLY     Scans integrity of all protected system files. No repair operation is
                performed.
/SCANFILE       Scans integrity of the referenced file, repairs file if problems are

/OFFBOOTDIR     For offline repair specify the location of the offline boot directory
/OFFWINDIR      For offline repair specify the location of the offline windows directory
Hello. I am running this in CMD (Command Prompt with System Administrator privileges).

I just do not understand because in the past it always completed at 100% regardless of the results.

Hmmm...

Yes, I am on more than one forum SINCE I can achieve a greater think tank for possible solutions for this issue. When I Googled it, I got SQUAT for true answers.

Any suggestions???

Why are you running sfc? Is it because you suspect something is wrong? If you suspect malware you should post in the correct section, where selected SKILLED forum members can advise.

You could examine your Logs\CBS\CBS.log file for lines containing [SR] and also "cannot repair" to see if any files are giving trouble

Code: [Select]type %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log | find "[SR]" | find "Cannot repair">sfc-problems.txt

Solve : Laptop Crashes Fan runs wild...(Windows 7 Tried)?

I have here a Compaq Presario v5000 LAPTOP By me.

80GB HD

AMD Sempron

Anyways It was an old laptop that had been heavily used and warn.
I took the whole thing apart and put it back together.

THe windows XP looked corrupt and it wouldnt start. it would start to boot up then crash. so i tryed to install windows 7

when windows 7 loaded up setup files it crashed in the process. It seems before it crashes the fan goes CRAZY and runs extremely fast.
then it crashes.

it also seems to show a blue screen of DEATH right before it crashes. but i cant read what it says as it crashed in an instant?

Could I have some help? Thanks tons! Why the heck would you expect Win7 to run on 256M of RAM ? ?

Why the heck would you expect Win7 to run on 256M of RAM ? ?

I'd re-consider your strategy here...

Sorry I did not explain myself well.

IT says 512 MB but system properties only shows 256MB

Seems to want install fine.

Also it says vista basic was preloaded but i think my brother downgraded.

Thx for PostingRegardless 512 isnt enough for Vista.technically... it is you just have to have a large HDD paging file which could be done for windows 7 as well. i wouldnt run it however it could be done, it would just be slower than molasses. what does the blue screen say (error code)?Wow, running window7 with 512 mb ram. i can barely run it with 4 gigs.Reinstall windows XP. Windows 7 hasn't a hope of running adequately, if at all, on that machine.

To see the blue screen, try pressing F8 as it starts (assuming this is after the initial "boot from disk" phase) and choose "Disable automatic restart on system failure"... actually, it might go by another name. I honestly have not had to use it since XP, so that's the text I remember.I had a simular problem when we installed windows 7 also.  For some reason it wasnt reading all the ram.  You might want to take out all the RAM chips and make sure there is no dust bunnies on the connections. Then reinstall the RAM, might want to upgrade it also and make sure all chips are the same amount.  IE.. 2 512mb or 2 256mb.  It is possiable that one of the RAM chips has gone bad adn that is why it is reading less then you say you have.  I would also go back to the original OS until the issue is solve since Windows 7 take a min. of 1gb to run properly.  GOOD Luck.  RonGreat forum!!! I have learned a lot here!!! Thanks for sharing guys. Quote from: BC_Programmer on November 03, 2010, 12:20:39 AM

Solve : Adding Microsoft Outlook Address Book to Brother Multifunction Printer?

I have bought a Brother All in one machine. When SENDING out a fax it opens up with an address book designed for the brother printer only which is empty and it seems I have to manually add all the contacts in. Is there a way that I can select OUTLOOK Address book for the ease of finding the contact information and select that as the recipient? As I'm from Manchester I know 'Brother' made in Manchester. As I'm from Manchester I know 'Brother' made in Manchester.

I don't think so. The Brother Printer Company began in Japan in 1908 as the Yasui Sewing Machine Co.  In 1934 it became Nippon Sewing Machine Manufacturing Co, and in the 1950s the company began to call itself the Brother International Corporation. In 1971 they started selling high-speed dot matrix printers. In EARLY 2003, the Brother Printer Company began selling multi-function devices. These are made in Shenzhen in China.

Solve : HP Pavilion will not boot "Stop c000021a (0xc0000001 0x0010034c)"?

Answer» HP Pavilion will not boot "Stop c000021a (0xc0000001 0x0010034c)".  I searched the forums and found two similar issues but they were at least able to boot windows.  I, unfortunately am not able to do that.  I have tried to reinstall windows but I still get the blue screen saying "Stop: c000021a (0xc0000001 0x0010034c)".  I've tried many option as far as Safe Mode, Recovery, restore, etc.  The most recent change was that I tried to install iTunes and plug in my new iPod Shuffle.  This was right before the problem started occurring.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.  I am fairly "computer literate" and can follow directions perfectly if you need to step me through anything.  Thanks in advance!! 1) We need the entire blue screen error.
2) Do I understand that you can reinstall and get into Windows but then at some point you'll get the error? If so, please do that and then do the following after the blue screen error:
Download BlueScreenView:
http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/blue_screen_view.html
unzip downloaded file and double click on BlueScreenView.exe to run the program.
when scanning is done, go to EDIT - Select All
Go to FILE - SAVE Selected Items, and save the report as BSOD.txt
Open BSOD.txt in Notepad, copy all of the content, and paste it into your next replyThank you for your prompt reply.  This is the first time I've used this forum and wasn't expecting such a quick return so I must apologize for my delayed response.  Here is as much information as I have so far:

Currently, when I attempt to boot the computer I automatically ENTER Windows Error Recovery.  I am given two options.

Launch Startup Repair (recommended)
Start Windows Normally

When I choose "Launch Startup Repair" I receive the black"Windows is loading files" notification at the bottom and shortly after I encounter the normal animated 'Microsoft Corporation' loading bar as if windows is about to successfully boot.  Roughly 3-5 seconds later I encounter the Blue Screen and this is what it displays:

STOP: c000021a {Fatal System Error}
The initial session process or system process terminated with a status of 0x00000000 (0xc0000001 0x0010034c).  The System has been shut down.

- If I choose "Start windows normally" the process is the same up until the blue screen (which lasts only a second) and is displaying something about a crash dump.  The screen disappears so fast that I am unable to see the entire message.

You mentioned downloading the BlueScreenView program.  I am unable to enter into widows so I'm not sure if I will be able to utilize the program properly.  If there is an option of creating a bootable disc from another computer please let me know as I do have a functioning laptop.

I have also attempted to reinstall windows vista using my original OS disc.  I recieve the black and white "windows is loading files" notification then the animated logo, then the blue screen.  Again it displays this message:

STOP: c000021a {Fatal System Error}
The initial session process or system process terminated with a status of 0x00000000 (0xc0000001 0x0010034c).  The System has been shut down.

If you need any additional information please let me know and thank you again for you assistance.  Let's try this. Reboot. As soon as the system starts to boot begin tapping the F8 (function) key. This should take you to the advanced boot option screen. At that screen choose "Disable Restart on Error" (the EXACT wording may be different - I'm not at a Windows 7 system at the moment). Next time the blue screen error appears it should stay up. If it does, please post the entire contents.

Also, when you say you try to reinstall Windows are you formatting first?

And last, what is new or different since the last time everything worked properly (ie, new hw, new sw, virus, error, etc)?Again I must apologize for not responding more quickly.  I can't seem to get free time to dedicate to this issue so I'm going to loose a little sleep tonight in the name of resolution.

When I disabled 'automatic restart upon error' (or whatever the exact wording was) the computer jumped back into the Windows Vista Installation. (I had forgotten the disc was still in the drive)  This however ended poorly resulting in the same blue screen error I had POSTED earlier

(for thoroughness this was it "STOP: c000021a {Fatal System Error}
The initial session process or system process terminated with a status of 0x00000000 (0xc0000001 0x0010034c).  The System has been shut down."

Upon restart I was given a few options one of them being a "restore point" or "last known good configuration" option.  This RESULTED in windows telling me that it could not configure windows with my current hardware setup then displaying the message "The installation was not successful.  Changes made during the installation process are being undone.  Do not restart your computer at this time.  It then shut down on its own.  When I restarted I came to a new blue screen and the message was as follows:

STOP: c000021a {Fatal System Error} The initial session process or system process terminated with a status of (0xc000001 0x00100658) The system has been shut down.

Thats were I've stopped.  I'm sure I could try some other options on my own but everything I try leads to a dead end.  Thank you for the help you've provided so far.  Please let me know if you need anymore information.  I will be available for the next 4-6 hours. Thanks again.Well, since this is happening during installation the only suggestion I can make is to boot to the Vista disk, delete and recreate any partition(s), format, and then try to install again. Is this an original retail copy of Vista? This is the copy of vista that came with the computer I purchased from a friend so I assume its a "retail" copy.  I didn't purchase it separately if thats what you mean but its the only copy I have.  I was afraid you would say that I need to format and partition.  I have pictures on this hard drive that I can't really afford to loose as I have not made any backups (my fault).  I'm going to attempt to connect the drive to another working desktop that I have and somehow extract the pictures.  If you have any advice in that area please let me know.  Thanks. What does the Vista cd look like? Does it appear to be an original? If it's a copy, that may be the problem.

Have you tried this:  right-click on the installer file and choose "run as administrator". Let's see if that works. It seems to install correctly, but when I run the program, I get a message saying "MP navigator has stopped working". Look at the link below. You probably have a corrupt profile:

In any case it didn't . So I am LEFT with REBUILDING it just to have this software work?

Solve : Vista - can't get online but can dowload updates?

Answer» FRIENDS computer - HP a6400f Desktop
They tried to connect an old router.
They couldn't get on the internet after that. Their ISP checked the Modem status and had the reset the modem.
I reset the Network Adapters connection through the Control Panel and Device Manager
Checked the Automatic DNS settings
Checked the LAN connection settings in IE to Automatically connect
Diagnosing the connection problem turns up nothing.
Manually connecting through the LAN adapter STATES that I'm already connected to the Internet but the status is limited.
System restore was unsuccessful.
Can't reboot in Safe Mode
Using the Connect function from the Start Menu only shows Dial Up as available.
Creating a new LAN connection results in a 'You Are Already Connected' message.
I haven't used the System Recovery Tool from boot. Don't know If I'll need a Vista recovery disk...which I don't have.
I want to reformat this thing and install XP but HP doesn't supply drivers for that os.
What next?
Forgot to add, Windows update & Malewarebytes' updates work fine. Malewarebytes & Spybot don't detect anything.
I even removed the battery and reset CMOS just cause.
Brought the machine home and tried all of the above again to no avail. Found out this version of Vista has the recovery disk creation software installed. Attempting that w 2 DVD +R/DL disks.
Please chime in if there's an alternative option.Define "couldn't get on the internet".
BROWSERS don't work?I couldn't see any LANDING page of any website regardless of the browser. Opera's message was 'Can't connect to remote server'. IE stated 'Problem Connecting ' with a diagnosis button below. In any case the recovery disks corrected the problem.

It completely depends on the size of the back-up data. But you should be able to use multiple disks just make sure you label them 1, 2, 3 etc.I don't think the Dell recovery system supports spanning....but i could be wrong.
Worst case scenario you'll lose 2 blank DVD's ...so go ahead and try it. Quote from: patio on October 29, 2010, 03:36:46 PM

Solve : Free SSD C:\ drive space. Mysterious additional 26 GB!?

Answer»

Hi all,

I'm really confused about this ISSUE. I have a 60 GB SSD drive which I USE to run my OS(Win 7 Pro x64) and a few specific programs from. Not long ago its storage icon has become red due to the fact that it's reaching its maximum storage of 60 GB. Now I ask myself how this is even possible. If I open Computer and select everything on C:\ (ctrl+a), and check the properties I see that the total size of these files are only 34.1 GB. The selection includes the windows folder itself and my program files folder along with everything else. Where the HECK are the additional 26.1 GB that I for some reason can not see?

I have already set my account associated folders such as My Documents, Pictures, Music etc to be stored on my other D:\ drive, so that's probably not the issue here. And I have also checked hidden files without luck.

Any help much appreciated. You might want to see if the SSD manufacturer has issue firmware updates.  I have an Intel SSD and shortly before I bought it Intel issued a software upgrade to implement a feature called 'Trim' which is essentially a 'defrag' feature.  Running a standard defrag program on an SSD reduces it's useful life because of the writes and rewrites a regular defrag program does.  There is the possibility that your extra 26 GB are fragmentations of the programs on the drive.

Interesting IDEA, never knew that was possible.

Here's the model (CMFSSD-64N1): http://www.corsair.com/products/ssd_legacy/default.aspx

Can't find any form of trimming programs unfortunately. More ideas anyone?

System Volume Information, which stores All System Restore points as well as Volume Shadow Copy data. Thanks, that sounds like it.

Is there any way to disable the shadow copy? How important is it?Just disable system restore if you like. And instead you can start using disk imaging software on a regular basis.Oscar:

You may find this article helpful: http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2342534,00.asp

My C: drive is 80g and following the instructions in this article to bring up the vssadmin list shadowstorage data, the maximum Shadow Copy Storage space is 5% or roughly 4 g. It says nothing about the Restore function though.  Even so....In Command prompt run below said command (in Administrator/elevated command prompt)

vssadmin resize shadowstorage /on=C: /for=C: /maxsize=4GB

This will reduce the size max to 4GB.

Thanks guys, very handy!

Since it's still relatively new, I would recommend utilizing your warranty and taking it back to where you'd purchased it from.

Solve : Blue Screen...?

Answer»

Hi

I've been having trouble with my computer for the past few days. What first happened was that 'the blue SCREEN' appeared and turned off my computer. This has been happening continually since Wednesday. At first I thought it was because the computer had a virus but I have ran AVG, Spybot and Norton and nothing stands out as particulary dangerous. I then thought it be caused by the fact that I had been having problems with Google Chrome, it would pop up but would not load and would just stay as a blank screen. I uninstalled it and installed it probably about 2 times each until I gave up and began using Internet Explorer. If this is the cause I dont know what I can do to fix it. I have also ran 'disk clear-up' and 'defragmented' my drives. Since then I have not seen the blue screen but my computer is still really slow and freezes a lot of the time causing me to lose my rag and turn the computer off by the button because it gets to a point where I get no response at all. Also, I thought it may have been caused by a windows update 'Windows Live Essentials 2011' which had not installed, I managed to install it and the problem is still happening. I really don't want to have to restore my computer an lose all of my photographs, work and music. Does anyone have any suggestions of what I can do?

Just for more information this is what came up about the BlueScreen when I checked the EVENT:
Problem Event Name: BlueScreen
OS Version: 6.0.6002.2.2.0.768.3
Locale ID: 2057

ThanksDownload BlueScreenView:
http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/blue_screen_view.html
unzip downloaded file and double click on BlueScreenView.exe to run the program.
when scanning is done, go to EDIT - SELECT All
Go to FILE - SAVE Selected Items, and save the report as BSOD.txt
Open BSOD.txt in Notepad, copy all of the CONTENT, and paste it into your next reply

Also, you do not have BOTH AVG and Norton AV running at the same time, do you?Hi and thanks for responding

I downloaded the program and ran it but nothing has been displayed, I've tried refreshing it but no files have appeared, is this because I've ran 'Disk Cleanup'?

No, I didn't use both at the same time. I used AVG free first which is the main anti-virus program I use and it only found a few minor viruses which I've now got rid of. Then I scanned on SpyBot and just to sure I stuck norton on to scan today and it only found 8 cookies. It just happened again so these is the details from BlueScreenView...

Solve : Vista Printing problem?

Answer»

Hi All,
I have an application that creates a letter in HTML. It then opens the default MS viewer to let the user print it. Every time they hit print we get a popup that says "There was an internal error, and Internet Explorer is unable to print this document. " You click the ok button and then the popup closes. We then have to GO to the achive to open the document in IE and then it prints fine.

I am USING Vista and IE 8. The machines are clean and up to date. Any ideas?

Thanks
BTW, I did CHECK MS web for this and they do have 3 methods to fix this but NONE of them worked. I changed the DPI and loaded the PCL 5 drivers as well as disabled the script error checking. After all of this it worked for about 5 pages and then back to the error.

I forgot to add that this works fine on XP machines.

Must be a Vista problem.
Have you tied another browser?
Have you tried to open the document in MS Word?
Which printer?
Is this the 64 bit Vista?

Solve : Changing the Word Processor Default?

Answer»

I have a new laptop that came with Windows 7 and a trial version of Word 2007.  It allowed me to use Word 2007 25 times before requiring an activation code.  Now that I have used the 2007 version 25 times, it only has limited FUNCTIONING.  I recently installed a copy of Word 2003 on my laptop.  How can I change the default to the 2003 version from the 2007 version?  Each time I open a Word document it automatically goes into 2007?  i would first try to unistal it and also delete any short cut to it as well that you may have on your desktopThat's what I wanted to avoid in case I choose to use it in the future!you could try to disable it in msconfig in the start up and SEE if that works. To make Word 2003 the default for .doc, open Word 2003, choose Help->Detect and Repair.I'd take this approach. Click on your Start button and select Default Programs.  When the panel for Default Programs opens, click Associate a file type or PROTOCOL with a program.  From the list of file extensions, select .doc and click the Change program button. Do you see the TWO versions of Word there?  If so, select Word 2003 and click OK.

Solve : batch file and Windows 7?

Answer»

Hi to all of you,

I recently install Windows 7 on my computer.
Each time I call my company's software, Windows ask for confirmation to access the disk.
Very annoying several times a day.

I tried to call the program via a batch file
BUT
I would need to include in the batch file a command to echo YES at this confirmation screen from Windows 7.
the command "START nameofprogram.exe" gives me the same confirmation screen.
I tried START nameofprogram.exe /yes to no avail.

Someone has an idea ?
Thanks

B. Viau, Canadawindows 7 has a control called User Account Control where you can specify how 7 behaves with program changes.  Very annoying IMO.  Type User Account Control into the Start >Search box and look for Change User......  Turning off the warnings MAY help.

You should be aware some people think this is dangerous because 7 will no longer warn you about any changes being made to programs on your machine and MS doesn't recommend it.  However I have been running with this feature turned off for months without any consequences. Thanks GW.

It's dangerous because it basically MAKES you run EVERYTHING as an administrator; sure, you don't run programs yourself as admin, but if they have a manifest that says the run it as admin, it instantly gets it, regardless of what the program does.

Basically, you are reverting the security model to the much ridiculed DEFAULT XP implementation.

Solve : Anyone else having to double click on everything??

I'm just curious if this is standard for windows 7?

example if there is a LINK I have to double click. In my start menu everything on the right side I have to double right click and the hit open.

Is there a fix for this? Quote from: flight on January 10, 2011, 04:00:29 PM

It's not.

I have no idea why it would act that way. Closest thing to your problem would be the options provided in Windows Explorer's Tools->Folder Options dialog, providing the OPTION to single click to open items or double click to open them, but those are for icons on your desktop and items in Windows Explorer, and don't dictate behaviour in your browser or start menu.Has it always been this way or did it just start?Thank you both for the fast response.

I bought the computer from a friend of a friend, so I don't know if it has always been LIKE that. Perhaps you COULD ask him or her.

And is that the only thing that seems to be wrong? Have you done a full scan with BOTH your anti virus utility AND with MalwareBytes?Ok I asked and they said it started happening a month after they bought it. Have you checked the mouse properties in Control Panel /Mouse ? ? Quote from: patio on January 11, 2011, 05:00:12 AM

Ok I asked and they said it started happening a month after they bought it.
You might wanna check if its the mouse option is the problem OR its the hardware. Have you/they tried using another type of mouse? Since it only happens on Start menu.

Solve : Vaio recovery tool?

Answer»

Hi,
I have a Sony Vaio VGNCR42s it will not load correctly i have tried every possible solution to get it to work with no luck
i have MANAGED to use Ubuntu in order t use my computer and then also get everythin off of my harddrive so there is no worry of losing anything.

I also have an old Dell Inspiron which i have transfered everything onto from my vaio so i am wonderig if it is possible to MAKE a recovery disk for the Vaio (as i didn't make one before) through the dell, and how i would go about doing this. I want to restore factory settings on my vaio and have tried all the F8 etc options and it doesn't work so i am hoping a disk will?

anyone have any ideas?

thank you
x
The OEM versions of Vista have important differences.
But you have saved you important stuff, so it is WORTH a try anyway.
You can BURN a recovery CD on the Dell and try it on the Sony.
Probably will fail, but not catch fire.
Let us know if it works at all.

Doesn't Sony provide some kind of help?
Shame on you for not making the recovery when you first got it.I know i should have made one in the first place but i just thought id be able to use the F10 option
Sony were no help whatsoever and then tried to get me o pay for he recovery CD for a ridiculous price when I already BASICALLY have the information to recover it, just burning it now so fingers crossed

Solve : Location: (Archive Root Directory) ... Method Deflated Win7?

Answer»

Hi,

After making some adjustments to a text file and selecting save, it would only let me "Save As"

I looked at its properties and its location was listed as: (Archive Root DIRECTORY) ... Method: Deflated

Can anyone tell me what's going on - I have spent days getting all my files in known places so that I can safely BACK them up but it appears that these have been moved somewhere else by windows7

Thank you
DeanHi All,

I've MANAGED to work it out... I was WORKING with a file in a ZIP directory (without realising it).

I guess the Location: (Archive Root Directory)  refers to the zipped folder and the deflated refers to the unzipped file!

I hope this helps anyone with the same question.

Solve : Gmail and Adult settings?

Answer»

Hi All,
I have a frind who is USING gmail to send me files and jokes that are adult. When I get them I get an error or the file just doesn't open. The error says something like the file is being blocked by the security settings. I am thinking that there maybe some setting in gmail that is blocking the files because of the adult content.

Thanks
Where does the error message seem to be coming from?  I would be more inclined to think it came from an anti-virus or anti-malware program or even a security feature in your browser.  Have you tried using a different browser?

I looked through Google's settings for gmail and see nothing pertaining to blocking adult content. I thought that also, it being something on my side, but I get other stuff from other people without any problems.

I am using the windows live email and have had no problems except with this one guy. He has XP and is useing gmail and AVG. I get no images from him and if I get sent something like a short movie it never opens. Like I said I get an error saying no adult content for you!

I have gone over my machine and have disabled all the adult blocking I can think of and I do get stuff from other people so I was thinking maybe gmail has something to filter this out.

Thanks for looking into gmail. I don't have an account so I didn't KNOW if it was his machine or gmail.

Thanks again
maybe try forwarding your mail in question to another email account if you have one.

I sometimes get email with attachments that do not seem to WANT to open properly when I click on the link in my regular email, but when I FORWARD it to my other less used email account, it opens fine in a readable format oddly.

May give that a try.

Solve : Ack, iTunes and Quicktime >

Answer»

I've already TRIED deleting all components of both programs, but neither will work. What's funny is that when I attempt to open iTunes (numerous times, I may add), Windows changes the color scheme to basic. When I try and open Quicktime, it does nothing. I've already done a search as to why this happens, but only came up with long threads describing Quicktime as some very unflattering things. My system has Windows 7 Home Premium and a 64-bit OPERATING system. I'm sure that I downloaded the correct version of iTunes, too, not the 32-bit. When I tried installing Quicktime  some time ago it had a rollback action. But it now has apparently installed correctly. >>;;

Believe me, if Quicktime were a person, I would punch it in the FACE right now.So what exactly is your issue here ? ?Either to find a PROGRAM that does everything iTunes would do (and also can connect to the iPad), or try and fix iTunes/Quicktime/whatever is causing them not to work.you might just uninstall quicktime and get quicktime alternative, which basically should do what quicktime can do in genral without the full quicktime NEEDING to be installed.

now, you might just uninstall iTunes. Install iTunes without quicktime and then install quicktime alternative and see if it work better this time.
