Answer» HI guys, any experts out there. I have a continuing problem with Hyperlinks, I have used Hyperlinks for YEARS and never come ACROSS this problem. When i click on a hyperlink, my excel shuts down. any ideas guys? any help would appreciated
How much Ram does your system have. I saw a similar problem with a machine running the bare minimum Ram and a video that was linked to his SPREADSHEET would call for Ram and it would crash out due to insufficient resources.Still having the problem?  What version of Excel?  What web BROWSER are you using?  What version of Windows?

Solve : Program remains and can't be uninstalled?

Answer»

Ok, so to begin my problems I did a system restore because of a bad driver package that made my keyboard stop working (that has been fixed by the sys restore). That being said I know this is the cause of my problem because it has happened before (previvious system restores) but, what is different about this particular time is that I can't uninstall my PROGRAM (Autodesk Revit 2011). Which brings me to my question, is there a way to make my computer think that this program has been uninstalled via deleting reg keys or some METHOD? Try REVO uninstaller...

Thank you Patio, that solved my problem, I can't thank you enough. I have heard of the program but it did the JOB that I needed it to do. I'm INSTALLING Revit as i type this. THANKSExcellent...
Glad it did the job for you...

Solve : Windows Updates Keep Re-installing Themselves Successfully in Win 7????

Answer»

Hello. I have a question for you regarding and WINDOWS Updates with Windows 7. I NOTICE I am having problems with Windows Update repeatedly (not/never ending) trying to re-install the same Windows Updates when I click on "CHECK for updates".

The updates are:

1. Security Update for Windows 7 (KB977165)
2. Security Update for Windows 7 (KB981852)

These updates are The Windows updates shows they were 'successful' under "VIEW Update History" under "Windows Update". Interestingly in "Uninstall an update" under "Programs and Features", there are no Windows updates listed at all. Hmmm...

Maybe this can help... ...recently, I installed more memory that triggered a Windows 7 activation again. Just prior to the memory installation, I had the latest Windows Updates all installed at the time. Now, it seems the Windows Update lists seem to have been reset in some way after the reactivation. Does this help at all?

Any ideas or reasons what is GOING on? Any solutions??? Please help! If you need any further input, please reply. I will provide it for you to assist in finding the reason and potential solutions.

Thank you!
Other then the two updates you listed do the rest of the updates install? Or is it just these 2 updates?

Solve : BSOD on new computer?

Answer»

Hi

I recently just build my own computer for the first time. I ordered the parts from newegg with the help of my friend. For some reason my computer just randomly blue screens and I'm not sure why.  First I thought it had something to do with Starcraft 2 considering it only happened when playing it. But just today it happened while i was just browsing the internet and listening to music. It blue screens about 3 to 4 times a day and like I said, it seems completely random. Sometimes I can go 5 hours without it blue screening, and other times it happens in 10 minutes. I'm running Windows 7 ultimate 64 bit and here are my computer specs:

Motherboard- MSI P55-CD53 LGA 1156 Intel P55 ATX Intel Motherboard
CPU- Intel(R) Core(TM) i5 CPU 760 2.80GHz
GPU- ATI Radeon HD 5700 Series
Memory- OCZ Gold 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3
PSU- Corsair 600W

My friend thought it might have something to do with the RAM, so he did a memory scan which didn't turn up any problems. I've tried updating all my drivers which also hasn't helped. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks! What is the complete BSOD message including the gibberish ? ?First of all, when it blue screens, my computer restarts before I EVEN have a chance to read the error message. Then I tried opening the dump files but for some reason I'm getting access denied. I've tried everything to set the permissions but nothing is working for me. I think I might have changed some setting so it won't restart after a critical error, in which case I will let you know what it says. Is there anyway to pause the blue screen before it restarts by chance?Boot to safemode...
Travel to Control Panel/ System/ ADVANCED/ ....uncheck "automatically re-boot on errors"...
Save changes and Exit.Ok I did that. I guess now I just wait, which shouldn't be too long. I did figure out how to open those dump files if that would be any help. There are multiple dump file so I'll list all of them here. Each dump is sperated by smiley faces! It looks like all of them are different which is confusing.

Solve : Corrupt partition table?

Answer»

I've had 2 HDD's in my PC: WDD's of 320 GB and a small IBM's of 13 GB (used for documents) divided in total of 3 partitions. The IBM started to MALFUNCTION, so I decided to move the files from it to the WDD (created a seperate partition, RESIZED one on it and MADE room for the new one). Files moved OK, EVERYTHING seemed fine, but then it wouldn't boot. Tried to repair MBR with win7 instalation disc, no results. Installed a fresh copy of windows, but my second partition (not the primary nor the one with the docs is corrupted. Can't acess it, but I still have a bunch of important files on it. Tried various software for saving those files, but no dice... any help?  I'm having trouble understanding what you are trying to do. Is the question about accessing files on a DIFFERENT Windows installation than the one to which you are booted? it's not the primary partition i can't access. Windows boots fine, but when i try to access the D: partition, it says that it's corrupted. When booting up the PC, it tries to check that partition, but then it says that the Master file table is corrupted. Nothing he can do about it, skips the chkdsk and continues to boot.

There is no different windows installation on the drive, there's only one. Fresh copy was installed over the old one.And I am also confused.
At this point he should have another PC that can backup his files. There is not way of knowing that there is a simple fix to the problem. It sounds like he has more that one problem.Or a problem that tampers with two different HDDs.Open an elevated command prompt and type: chkdsk /r (press ENTER).tried it already, then I get an error message saying:
Quote

Access denied as you do not have sufficient privileges.
You have to invoke this utility running in elevated mode.
As I said - open an ELEVATED command prompt (right-click on a command prompt window icon and "run as administrator") Quote
The type of File system is NTFS
Volume label is Igre.
Corrupt master file table. Windows will attempt to recover master file table from disk.
Windows cannot recover master file table. CHKDSK aborted.

same thing when booting. If Microsoft's Checkdisk (chkdsk) failed to repair the MFT, you could try a repair tool like the free TestDisk.

http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk_Download

In the Advanced menu, select your NTFS partition, choose Boot, then Repair MFT. TestDisk will compare the MFT and MFT mirror (its backup). If the MFT is damaged, it will try to repair the MFT using the backup. If the MFT backup is damaged, it will use the main MFT.

If both MFT and MFTMirr are damaged and thus cannot be repaired using TestDisk, you might want to try commercial software like Zero Assumption Recovery, GetDataBack for NTFS or Restorer 2000. Tnx for the info will give it a shot, see what happens and hopefully save my files

Solve : OLD Palm Pilot vs. New HP Computer!?

Answer»

I loaded my Palm Pilot m505 software onto this new HP 2010i but it won't "hotsync"--message is "The selected port COM1 is not available at this time. HotSync Manager will open the port when it becomes available."  How do I make that happen? Where do I FIND this "serial port" connection so that the Palm device will speak to the Palm software?  This is incredibly frustrating and anxiety-producing...no way to back up the handheld at the moment. Thanks.  Welcome to the CH forum.

There is some detail about your post that has US confused. What KIND of computer is the  HP? Is it running Vista? Many laptops no longer use serial ports, only USB.
Apparently you got your palm pilot to sync with another PC, is that right?
But now the software does not work on the new HP? Is that right?

Solve : High CPU and Memory usuage?

Answer»

I read the "read this first" post to see where the BEST place to post would be. I hope I'm in the right place. I have a 1640 XPS laptop with 4 gigs of ram. It's got a Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU    P8700 2.53GHz  2.53GHz  Processor. Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit OS. OK there's my set up. My QUESTION is this: As soon as I open up a browser window or windows media player or just about any program my CPU usage and my memory usage go through the roof. I know there are quite a few "services" running in the background. I have my msconfig programs down to a minimum but I don't know enough to mess with the services that are running. This may not even be my problem. I'm assuming and that's why I came to all of you. I am running CA Security Suite 100% of the time. (This program has been very good to me over the years keeping my PC CLEAN) If anyone could help or if you need more info I would really appreciate you replying. Thank All................Andrew1) Do not use msconfig to manage startup programs / processes
2) Open Task Manager to the Processes tab. Double-click on "cpu" at the top of the cpu column to sort the column with highest usage at the top. Is a specific process hogging the cpu?Thank you for your time and response. I did what you instructed. When I double-click the CPU (the column is full of 00s) the only column I can see that shows number data is the Memory (Private working set) column. There are roughly 30 programs running. It looks like the big users are Microsoft Office Outlook, Firefox, Desktop Windows Manager, Windows Explorer, Dell Dock, Common Event Manager. These are names in the description columns. If you need the image name I can provide those. Again Thank you for your time. My laptop works pretty well it's just that being a newer laptop I would expect it not to "top" out on memory and CPU usage so fast. I must have a lot of things running in the background I do not need. Do not worry about memory usage. The only concern you should have is if something is hogging the cpu. You should not see ALL zeros - the task manager itself is using cycles. Either click on "cpu" again to resort or scroll to the bottom to see if something is using the cpu heavily. If not, don't worry about things you don't need to worry about. If the system is running smoothly you may assume Windows is managing memory just fine.Under CPU all the way down are 00's. The Task manager has 02.  What do these numbers represent? And with your response I feel better about it all. Thank you. I officially have stopped trying to fix something that isn't broke. LOL.........It just shows how much of the cpu is being used and by which process(es). And yes, moving on is a good idea. Just enjoy the system and leave the inner workings to Microsoft. Quote from: Eighthnote on January 03, 2011, 10:10:32 AM

Under CPU all the way down are 00's. The Task manager has 02.  What do these numbers represent?

The % of the total CPU time that that process is using. This includes any extra cores you have (a runaway program on a dual core machine would generally show "50%" CPU usage, since it "pegs" a single core at 100%).

Also note that "System Idle Process" is not a process at all but rather a "placeholder" that task manager uses to show how much idle time there is.

Additionally, a lot of people like to believe that the higher your "System Idle process" shows, the more responsive the system is. This isn't always the case, THOUGH- idle time means the CPU is doing absolutely nothing at all but waiting, so that "idle" time doesn't contribute to responsiveness one bit.

When your machine isn't doing anything, everything should be 0- (which means, again, that it's essentially not doing anything) except for system idle process and maybe taskmgr (which uses a varying amount depending on the power of the processor- on mine taskmgr.exe only uses 1% when I move the window around rapidly or size it or do other things; on my older machine, taskmgr would generally use about 4 to 7 percent just by being open.

if everything else is 0 or 1, then you don't have a problem. It's when a single process sits at 100% (or, to be precise, when a single process sits at 100% divided by the number of cores you have- if a process sits at 50% and you have a dual-core machine, for example) and even then, it should only be of concern when that program isn't really doing anything; for example, when I render a video with 3ds max, it consumes two of my cores and pegs it's usage at 50% (since I have four) but it is using that CPU for a good reason. It's when some random process that you know shouldn't be using the CPU sits and pegs it for a long time.

Memory is generally something you shouldn't worry about; for me, Firefox is using nearly a GB of memory- however, if I had only 2GB total (rather then 8GB to distribute) then firefox would "know" not to cache it's pages so much. Although to be frank I think the entire idea behind firefox's usage of memory for caching is absolutely pointless since the OS should be responsible for such things as well as it essentially duplicating information that Vista and 7's Superfetch will be keeping track of, but I digress.

Remember however that the values shown do not mean "this is how much of your physical memory this program is using"; it simply means that is how much it has allocated; memory pages that haven't been accessed or aren't used very often will be written to the pagefile (and windows will tell itself "ok, if word.exe wants that bit of memory, I'll have to remember that it's on disk") and then gives that bit of memory to some other needy application. If the original program goes to read that bit of data, a page fault occurs, the virtual memory manager quickly copies that bit of memory back from the pagefile, and then whistles and pretends it was there all along.

Basically, the details of memory management are not something that can be grasped fully without reading a few books on the subject

Solve : Windows 7 Virtual Memory question?

Answer»

Hello Folks,

This sounds like a tough question to me.

I've order components for a new computer. (I hope I don't smoke this thing.) I ordered Windows 7 Home Premium to install on it. (Builders Pack) The stuff hasn't arrived yet, but I was wondering about something.

I read somewhere that it is advantageous to have a SEPARATE drive for virtual memory. Would it be a good idea to partition a section of the new hard drive to be used only for that purpose? If so, how much should I partition? I ordered a 500GB SATA II. I'm not a big computer user and could easily spare 100GB for virtual memory, or would 10GB be more than enough? If a separate partition is an ADVANTAGE, is there anything special I would have to do to set it up to be used advantageously?

My current thoughts for partitions is:

C: Operating System
D: Virtual Memory
E: Programs and everything else
F: Backup – Things I don't want to lose

Thanks,
Harry
The old MS suggestion was a separate drive (not partition) for virtual memory if possible. And even then there was essentially no difference. But given the SPEED of today's drives and cpu's I wouldn't worry about it. If you want a separate partition for good housekeeping purposes that's fine, but there's no need to pay any attention to pagefile settings these days. Leave it as system MANAGED and move on.Thanks Allen,

That answers my question very well.

HarryYou're very welcome. And just as an aside, I guess I'm a bit "OC", but I have lots of partitions on all of my systems Having a separate partition on the same drive for virtual memory/swap file was only advantageous when you ran Windows versions before windows 95 (3.1,3.0, etc) in Standard Mode.

Standard Mode created Swap files "on the fly"- one for each application. Enhanced mode used a single large swap file that was created in a contiguous area of the hard disk. The only advantage to a partitioned approach is that all the files stored on that partition would be contiguous and CLOSE together, so it really only offered an advantage in Standard Mode, since the enhanced mode swap file was always contiguous.

Actually, it is not really necessary to separate hard drive partition for virtual memory. However, that is a good system optimization since it will have a small chance of having your page file fragmented as it shrinks and grows. Fragmentation can slow down your computer’s response. On the other hand, with regard to how big your virtual memory partition should be, you need to have it twice bigger than your physical memory. So, you may not want to go any bigger than 2 GB on your system.Just feel VERY free to ignore the above post.

Solve : Cannot Uninstall Windows Live Essentails On Vista?

Answer»

Hi, my sister is over for the weekend and she uses Windows Vista on a laptop, and ever since she UPDATED Windows Live Messenger nothing in it seems to be working right, so at this point we figure we are better off to uninstall EVERYTHING related, like Windows Defender, windows mail, windows live, and messenger COMPANION.....
From browsing the net, I have read that the only good way to do this is to get rid of them all at one time, so when I try to do this I get:
'We couldnt remove: Windows live mesh, mail, messenger, messenger companion.
'An unknown error occured.
Error 0x80070641
source: live remoteservice-amd64

I tried looking up this error on google but couldnt find anything, does anyone KNOW what the problem may be and how to fix it? I'm at my wits end, been trying to figure this out all day, although I do admit I know pretty much nothing about Vista, I'm a XP user, any help would be great, or her computer may end up thrown off my balcony!
Oh yeah, also ran superantispyware and malwarebytes before posting, didnt find anything with those....
Thanx! Why not to: http://explore.live.com/windows-live-essentials-uninstall-ui?ppud=4&wa=wsignin1.0 ?Thats exactly what I did, and thats when I get the error I mentioned above..... Try this: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/exchangesvr3rdpartyapps/thread/80e098d1-3466-4c6e-8ba2-ee196814b650I tried that already before starting this thread, and I get the error's I mentioned above, this is why I dont understand this error, most of these programs dont even give you the option of removing them on their own, just the way that link describes.....
Let me try it again.....Try to reinstall Windows Live Essentails over the top.But that seems to be the thing that screwed up everything in the first place, if we can ever get rid of this stuff, we would like to install old VERSIONS of this stuff, the new versions seemed to start the problems.....How about using system restore to some date before the issue started? Quote from: Broni on October 23, 2010, 04:23:28 PM

How about using system restore to some date before the issue started?
Well, the problem seems to be when she has tried system restore twice now, it makes things worse, like IE keeps freezing up, windows messenger works even worse, ect, also when she tried to install a later version of messenger, it wont let her and automaticly installs the latest, that doesnt work, also windows installer doesnt work, so we now need to know which installer version we need for vista SP2, the installer she says we need first......
Sorry this is alot to throw out, wish I could figure this stuff myself......It looks to me, like that Windows installation is somewhat whacked.
Do you have/can borrow Vista DVD.
We could try repair installation.I assume we cant to a repair installation without the Vista DVD?
Is there another way around that? (I'm personally thinking no)Not really, unless you want to back up all data and reinstall Windows, using recovery partition, or recovery DVDs.OK, thanx for the help Broni..... You're very welcome You may want to see here...

Do the errors occur with another browser (e.g. Firefox) and PDF reader (e.g. Foxit Reader)?
Are all the documents you are trying to "pull up" at the same place?

Solve : Help with Alienware M17x R2?

Answer»

I have two problems, that I'm not really sure how to fix.  So I thought I might try asking for help here.

The FIRST, is that whenever I remove my AC adapter, the laptop locks up in it's entirety and regardless of time passing won't respond.

The SECOND, is that when I wake my computer up from standby/hibernation and occasinally when I open my laptop after closing it, the screen will be black, with only the cursor visible.  To remedy this, if I'm waking up from standby/hibernation, I just have to move my cursor around until it turns into the "I" figure, and type my password.  If I'm opening my laptop, I just have to ctrl+alt+del and hit cancel (or do anything else, for that matter).

Any IDEAS on how to fix EITHER of these problems? It's a longshot, but download and install the latest chipset drivers for your laptop.  Hopefully, that will resolve the hibernation/general power issues.

Alternatively, you could try flashing the BIOS, but that seems pretty risky at this point (especially if your laptop freezes during the flash...you'll have an expensive brick...).

Another thing you might want to look at is whether or not the battery is on the verge of death.  Sometimes a dying battery can do more to a laptop than just turn the thing off if it has no AC power.  I've seen anywhere from BSODs to frozen splash screen boots (yes, I know, "What are you smoking, B?"...but seriously, it can happen).  Another alternative, although this more involved is to start from scratch and back up the HDD files and do a clean install of the operating system.

I just noticed that you have what i said as your signature, i remember posting that, i was right BTW i got the computer back about two months later and was asked to format it due to viruses.

Solve : What does "Silverlight" do??

Answer»

Hi -
I am running Vista Home Basic   32 BIT.  I recently went from Internet Explorer 7 to IE 8.  When I look at "All Programs" I see one named "Microsoft Silverlight".  How do I find out what it does and how do I use it?    Is there a website that I can log onto and get an explanation of programs?
Thanks    Bob
http://www.silverlight.netIt's basically a *censored* version of Flash that MS want's you to insist you have...It's a light version of Windows PRESENTATION Foundation, a newer DPI independent and composition-based window management framework, designed for use on the web.

Hardly. Although I think it is limited to Windows platforms (since WPF is pretty reliant on DirectX) it's interesting to note that it didn't take infinity+1 years for them to create a 64-bit version, since .NET requires no particular extra effort if you write the program right. Of course neither would C++, but clearly there is something *censored* in flash if it takes a good number of years just to create a 64-bit version. Flash is ok for movies but considering that firefox and other browsers pretty much needed to run plugins in separate processes specifically because flash crashes so much it makes me wonder how context-sensitive your definition of "*censored*" might be.Hi -

Solve : My restore has not worked?

Answer»

Hello -
I ran a backup and I got it on 3 DVD.  The program said it was successful.  Now I want to run a restore.  I go to the control panel and click on backup and restore center.   This brings up a panel which has a restore files space which I click on.  That brings up a panel which has the date and the DVD that I ran the backup on.  If I click on next I can restore files and folders.  This is not what I want.  I want to use the backup to restore everything because I have made a mistake and want to go back to a time before the mistake.  I hope someone can figure out what I am trying to say and tell me where I am going wrong.     Thanks      Bob  Hi-
I failed to say that I am using Vista Home Basic   32 bit.   BobIt depends on the mistake.

If it was a bad driver or update, then you could use System Restore and roll back to before the mistake was made.

If it was a deleted FILE or folder, then just restore it from the Recycle Bin.  If it's deleted from the Recycle Bin, then restore selected files from the backup.

If it was a mistake so catastrophic that you absolutely feel as if you have to do a complete restore, you can certainly do that.  Just restore all files from the backup set.

More info here: http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/100253-restore-backup-files.html (YES, this is a 64-bit Vista website, but the instructions work for 32-bit as well).Killerb255 -
Thanks for your reply.  I will check your suggestion.   BobKillerb255 -
I followed the instructions but it did not work like I expected.  It asked for the first DVD which I put in.  I could never hear it running nor did it ask for any other DVD.  Maybe I don't know what to ask for.  When I use "system restore" in the "all Programs" panel  I can choose a restore point and run a complete restore.  However, when I try to run a restore using the back up on the DVD it does not give me a full back up.
Suppose something erased all my restore points, I could run a restore from the DVD.  That is the REASON I am trying to learn how to use the back up and restore.   Am I trying to do the right way?
Thanks for your time.   Bob"System Restore" and restoring from a backup are two different things.  I know...it doesn't HELP that Microsoft called them by similar names.

System Restore takes a snapshot of registry changes, driver changes, and things like that and SAVES them on (usually) the same drive that the operating system is installed on.  This is done through Start -> Control Panel -> System -> System Protection.

Restoring from a backup is an entirely different process.  Files, folders, and whatnot that are on the backup media (in this case, your DVD), are copied from that medium back to your computer, (usually) overwriting what's currently there.  This is done through Start -> Control Panel -> Backup and Restore, as the tutorial states.  killerb255 -
Thanks for your reply.  I still have not solved my problem but I have a friend that is knowledgeable about computers.  When he has time he is going to come over and I will show him my problem.  I am sure he will see where I am doing something wrong.  Thank you for your time.    Bob

Solve : I want my Windows Vista back!?

Compaq Presario PC loaded with Vista Basic. I completely switched over to Ubuntu - NO DUAL BOOT...
I have the two disks from HP to restore WINDOWS, I tried messing with the partitions in Ubuntu, then popped my Windows disks in. Seems to get stuck somewhere, Because after a couple of hours, PC goes to sleep. Process log SAYS it should take 16 hours?
I've begged the guys at Ubuntu to help, but they don't seem to know enough about Windows to help. The disks worked for me once before, so I know they're good.
Help?Installing Windows after installing a Linux OS is more difficult than installing Ubuntu in a dual-boot configuration where Windows is already installed.  So, if completely erasing your HARD drive and then installing Windows and then Ubuntu is a feasible option for you, that might be the best approach to reach your objective here.

Whichever way to decide to proceed, this reference should be helpful: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WindowsDualBootRight. I read those instructions and switched partitions to ntfs.  When I put my windows disks in, after SEVERAL hours of inactivity, computer goes to sleep. I get to a BLUEISH screen that shows HP logo on bottom left, says don't turn off on top, and shows it working on bottom right. Can't get past that.

Solve : internet problems!! ahah im desperate :(?

Hello everyone, I have bad English and I hope you to understand ..
I have some problems on the Internet that already getting on my nerves and I really wish you would help

The problems:
* My Internet is slow in general and sometimes it takes a while until he upload the page.
* I can't download from the internet!! When im click on the "download" button he did not respond at all and the page became stuck and slower..
* When I enter a YouTube video clip, it does not load at all and I see only the spinning icon. About ten minutes later the video suddenly loaded at once..

Details
Im using Internet Explorer, Windows 7 x64
I got 4gb RAM

The speed in the other computers is the same!
It is important to note that other computers have no problems at all and we are connected to the same router...

What should I do?!
thank you!
Your english and grammer are excellent. Alot better than some english people that i know.

Have you tried a different browser? You forgot to mention if you are connected via wired or wireless, Laptop  or Desktop. How many computers are running and connected at the same time? What Protection Softwares(Firewall, Antivirus) installed? Have you tried connecting to IE8 again with your computer only running on the router to confirm the problem?
you may need ALSO to clean up temp files or junk and run SAS, MBAM, Ccleaner to check for any threats and infections residing on your machine. I tried a different browser and the situation is even worse; it does not upload even the Home Page..

Im connected via wired Desktop, there are 3 desktops and 1 Laptop who connected at the same time.
I got NOD Antivirus 4.2

3 days ago I tried to connect the Laptop with my CABLE and there were no problems..

I clean up the system with Ccleaner and Registry Machanic like a million times already..
Registry cleaners are a no no. Did this happen just suddenly or just after running the registry cleaners? Desktop has secured connections on wired and so as you connected the Laptop. Have you run the troubleshooter for your wireless card under Network connection?
You could also refer to this link--> http://www.online-tech-tips.com/windows-7/windows-7-cannot-connect-to-internet/

Edit : Have you tried moving the Laptop to other place for any probable interference?Yeah, I agree. The fact that it works fine with a direct connection would lead one to believe the problem is with the wireless signal to the laptop.Maybe I did not explain myself properly .. I got problems with my desktop PC (NOT LAPTOP)...
I wanted to check if the problems is with the computer or with the internet connection. So I plag my internet wire into another computer (laptop in this case) to see if there are problems..
There were no problems so it turns out that the problem with the computer itself.Hello,

You can try another browser first, as Firefox.

Then you can check if your firewall works.

good luckI tried a different browser like Firefox and the situation is even worse; it does not upload even the Home Page..

1) Do a system restore to a day when all was well
2) Run all your anti-virus programs.
3) Run ccleaner
4) Run Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
5) Buy more RAM
Ignore the above post, DO NOT do a system restore until all other avenues have been explored!

What has that got to do with internet connection?

System Restore is a quick fix and does not hurt anything and can be reversed.

90 % of the time a slow computer is caused by low RAM.  Low RAM can be caused by a VIRUS or too many programs at startup

As a last resort install more RAM. Quote
3 days ago I tried to connect the Laptop with my cable and there were no problems..
Ok I thought this was the problem. What type of Network card is installed? Does your status icon shows that you are connected?
1. Run the Network troubleshooter for your Network card for your Desktop.
2. In your Control Panel, Network Connections, Right-click Network Card/Properties/General Tab and highlight TCP/IP click Properties. Are Obtain IP address and DNS server dotted? Check Also Alternate configuration tab if
Automatic Private Address is default.
3. Also for your IE8 Browser. GO to Tools/Internet options/Connections/LAN settings, is automatically detect settings in default?
4. On your Device Manager, check the status of your Network card if it states that it is working properly.
5. You could also try opening browser(IE8) without add-ons. Right-click IE8 icon on desktop and choose Start without add-ons.

While I agree system restore may not "hurt anything", it certainly is not necessarily a "quick fix". And your comment that a slow computer is caused by low ram 90% of the time is simply nonsense.

Solve : failing computer :(?

Answer» HI im new to all this but i have a hp pavillion dv2700 laptop anyways the THING crashed on me a few months ago, my family moved here and there and i kind of lost track of it. only recently did i get the laptop up and running (kind of) ive done all that i can finding info online etc etc so far what i have figured out is that my computer says that my hard drive is ok my battery is going out and im in the process of ordering a new one. Ive used my antivirus plus a couple of other programs to check my computer for viruses all of which tell me that my computer is clean. my laptop also overheats (also in the process of ordering a cooling fan) the computer still randomly shuts down on me and has trouble starting up. some of the things that have occured on shutdown : screen turns a yellowish color then goes black and i have to shut it down, blue screen comes up saying "hardware failure" or something along those lines. or it has just randomly shut down. the startup problems mostly include screen comes on but never changes from black and I have to hit ctrl alt delete a few times, or just absolutely NOTHING will happen. also the computer will rarely be able to start up after hibernate or sleep. computer speed is good anyway i thought I would put all of my computers symptoms etc on here and see if someone could help me out. Do I really have a bad hard drive, virus or something like that? Is it because of the overheating or the bad battery? Are there any other things I can do to figure out my problem? etc etc anyways let me know and you may have to explain some things in depth. Im still really learning about computers so bear with me Overheating can DAMAGE everything from the mobo to its components. So the longer the problem is not resolved the higher the damaged it gets. But I can make a amazing PC under $600 which preforms better than my primary PC. Maybe less features for an average user but amazing for a expert. All things in the Windows 7 Advantages support that amazing PC.
  • Vista has so much bugs it can crash.
  • My PC has Windows Messanger which asked me to log in. I have a Windows Live account with my regular eMail but I only use it for posting Windows Gadgets and downloading Windows Beta releases
  • If you don't have the Ultimate edition, you are unproductive (At least if you're a expert).
  • The side of the "Favorite Links" usually does not include "Videos" while in Windows 7, it does.
  • Without the Business or Ultimate edition, you will need to install VMWare or VirtualBox which contains unsafe NIC and USB drivers
  • I never got a major crash in Windows XP, even on a 266MHz PC (I really did it) while on this modern PC, It crashes often.
  • It is harder to align Windows in half in Vista than on Windows 7
  • Both XP and Windows 7 are faster in bootup time and in benchmarks such as 3dMark Vantage than Vista and use Less storage space.
  • Windows Vista = Life with Walls
I also have more problems.
I don't want to use pirated Windows 7, nor any Windows Vista now.
Windows 7 advantages include:
  • Easy access to any tab in IE from the start menu
  • Crashes less
  • Windows XP mode for legacy applications to run on STANDARD enviroment (Based on CPU too.)
  • Windows can align easily in half on single monitor (Dual monitor version was there since Windows 98 if you expand your desktop to two monitors, so that's why I will never use Intel GMA.)
  • It is easier to do things. I can save a average of one to three hours every day on the computer.
  • Minimizing all windows except one is as easy as shaking a Window.
  • It's faster. Pentium II ran Windows 7 while people need a Pentium III or AMD Athlon for Vista. A Overclocked Core i7 Extreme Edition + Windows 7 = FAST!!! (Sure I won't get a Core i7 but I saw benchmarks online, both Overclocked Core i7 and Vista vs Windows 7.
  • Searching is faster, so I don't have to have Google desktop anymore. I don't have Google Desktop on my PC.
I knew about Windows 7 almost instantly after the Windows Vista release. I tought it WOULD be useful. My parents tought I would just like a new PC but I hate it. They overpayed for it and they still never saw those amazing specs.

Solve : ugh...no system restore and laptop not working?

Answer»

Hi

Really hope someone can help me. I restarted my computer (Vista 32) as I updated a program, when it restarted it came up with the Windows Update screen (even though it hadn't downloaded any updates that day?), it got to 91% Stage 3 of 3 and stayed there for at least an hour, then the cursor froze, so I had to turn it off (hold the power button down) and on again. Now I can only start it in Safe Mode, and when I try system restore it says i have no restore POINTS (even though I know I used to!!!). It also won't let me start up Windows Update from the Start Menu, I click on it and nothing happens. When I try normal mode it lets me PUT in my password but then either goes BLACK and stay that way, or says Personalised Setting (not responding).

Any help that doesn't involve reinstalling Vista?

What is NEW or different since the last time everything worked properly (ie, new hw, new sw, virus, error, etc)?Hi
Apart from the windows update nothing was different. I did a spyware etc scan in sae
Safe mode and got nothing. Now I've got BIGGER problems though! I pressed f8 and repair your computer and that's made things worse as now the computer won't start up in any mode. I have put my vista disc in to reinstall and it says windows is loading files but then just goes to a black screen with an arrow cursor on. The disc was working yesterday. Is there any way I can reinstall windows vista? Even the repair your computer etc screens won't load now
Thanks

Solve : Windows 7 Home Ultimate sleep mode problem?

Answer»

My wife's computer has Win 7 Home Ultimate. When we try to put it into Sleep mode, it goes to sleep for about .25 seconds and immediately comes out. It had been working fine as of a week ago. I tried CHANGING the setting to disable it from waking due to system events but it still immediately comes out of sleep mode. Any ideas? Thanks!
I'm not a fan of sleep or hibernate. RATHER than either, just set your hd and display to power down after a defined period of inactivity (in CONTROL Panel - Power Options). You and your computer will be MUCH happier. The PROBLEM is that her computer has a VERY loud fan, and we'd prefer to not have the noise all the time. I just can't figure out what would cause it to go to sleep and then instantly come out of sleep mode. It had been working perfectly.Turn it off when silence is needed...Desktop or Laptop?

Solve : HP LaserJet?

Answer»

I have a very old HP Laser Jet 4 Plus that I am trying to get working with Win 7. I think once I got it to print out one page. The computer seems to download all the necessary software, but it still doesn't work. I am using a cable with a usb connector at the computer end as my computer doesn't have a serial port.Have you installed the printer driver? It probably has no Win7 DRIVERS available...Oops - Missed the W7. You are absolutely right of course. Had to dump my old HP4 YEARS ago - loved that printer.Win 7 searched for and found drivers. It had to search further than from the initial list. I am puzzled-if it installed the drivers, why doesn't it work? If I installed a virtual drive, WOULD it work from it? Quote from: spock on January 09, 2011, 06:18:04 PM

I very much doubt you are RUNNING drivers that are for win7. I would try to upgrade to a new printer, or attach the printer to a computer that can use it.. XP etc.Well, I UNDERSTAND where you're comin' from, but I'm not quite ready to divorce my old reliable laserjet. I think maybe I should create a work-around. I have two ideas in mind, a virtual drive (with XP) or Ubuntu (which I have on a flash drive). Are either one of these doable? You can also dual boot to XP if you like.I'm discussing that in another thread.

Solve : Flash freezes IE, I can't install software, System Restore makes things worse?

Answer»

I have a Gateway sx2840-01 running Windows 7. It has a Core i3 530 cpu, 6Gb of RAM and a 1 Tb hard drive. I'm using Norton Internet Security 2010. On Friday we set up a second computer running Windows 7 and established a homegroup. The new computer is an HP HPE-400z with an Athlon II X4 635 cpu 6Gb of RAM and a 1Tb hard drive. When we set up the new computer we removed an old Dell that had been on a workgroup with the Gateway. These are the only recent changes to the operating environment I can think of.

I'm having three problems that seem to have arisen simultaneously:  I can't run Internet Explorer with Flash Player installed, I can't download and install either Chrome or Firefox, and SYSTEM Restore either fails or introduces new problems.

I wish I had made  notes of my attempts to fix the problem, I'll make as COMPLETE an accounting as my memory allows.

I first encountered the problem with Internet Explorer, when I tried to start it it froze and I got an error message to the effect that Adobe Flash Player Installer/Uninstaller 10.1 r102 had stopped working. I uninstalled Flash Player and Internet Explorer started normally, when I reinstalled Flash Player the problem recurred.

At this point I decided to switch to Chrome, but Chrome was behaving oddly too, specifically I couldn't make any edits to my bookmarks. I decided to uninstall and reinstall Chrome. Chrome would not reinstall. I attempted to install Firefox, same problem. In both CASES the installer SEEMED to run normally, but nothing happened. As an experiment I tried to install CCleaner, same problem. However I was successful at reinstalling Flash Player.

I then tried to do a System Restore. It failed. I tried an earlier restore point. The system seemed to think this was sucessful but it left my desktop background black, and I found that Windows MEDIA Center would not run. Undoing the System Restore brought things back to square one.

I'm utterly baffled by this and will be most thankful for any help anyone can offer me.

Solve : hp Pav. 9700 has new hard drive. Error message when in recovery????

Answer»

I cannot seem to find topics quite like this problem.  I put a new hard drive in my hp Pavillion 9700 and ordered recovery discs to get the system running.  I have System Recovery DVDs 1 and 2 and an Application and Driver Recover CD.  The only one that will load files onto the computer is the Sys. Recov. DVD #1.  I get to the on screen instructions and an Error appears as 0x 4001100200001004.  No clue what this means.  The other System recovery DVD gives me an Op. System Not Found error and the Application and Driver CD tells me the Boot Manager is missing.  If I can get any clues on what to do I will be forever grateful.  Without knowing more about the disks I'd guess you are supposed to boot to disk one, which WOULD begin the installation process and at some POINT tell you to replace it with disk number two which would finalize the installation. You would then boot to the OS and insert disk 3 and install the drivers. But it sounds as though you can't get through disk one.

Is that the entire error message - those numbers? If so, you should probably CONTACT HP and see what they have to say.You have it right...cannot get through disc one.  The error message is just what is above FOLLOWED by, "If this happens again, contact HP."  Am I boned if I'm not under warranty?Contact HP

Solve : Had to replace a mother board - no start up disc!?

Answer»

My HP desktop PC had a videocard ISSUE on the  motherboard and I had to  (have my tech) replace the whole mother board. HOWEVER, my tech wasn't ABLE to create a start up disc before he did this. Of course, I did not GET any discs with the PC when new and I knew nothing about creating my own start up disc.  The computer would not function at all. Unfortunately - I'm very experienced at MS Word and Works programs and terminology and other than that - I know squat.

Is there a way to create a start up disc some other way. It was supposed to have Vista and IE. I have the discs for my monitor, printer and other peripherals but . . . . . nothing else. Am I totally out of luck??You need to purchase a Vista CD or you can call the computer MANUFACTURER and see if they will send you one at a discount.

Solve : Windows 7 Issues...?

Answer»

I'm having an issue with my COMPUTER.

First off, specs.

Windows 7, 32 bit.
500g Sata HD
Dual core 2GHZ processor
4gb RAM

Anyways, this happened late last night when I reconnected my modem to my computer (after having had it out plugged into my Xbox360 for some Xbox Live). Webpages were appearing coded, or gibberish. Some graphics/videos requiring Flash Player were not showing. Thinking it was a flash error, I uninstalled it and attempted to reinstall. Google Chrome would not let me download it. Neither would Firefox or IE. It NEVER gave an error message or anything. It just....never downloaded. So, naturally, I thought it was my browsers. Uninstalled all but IE, and upon attempted reinstall of Google Chrome, I got an error to the effect of "Authentication Validation failed". And the download timed out. Mozilla downloaded the .exe launcher, but upon launching it, force closed due to an error regarding an expired/faulty "Digital Signature". Upon some more testing, NOTHING web based will download. And, on the rare occasion it will, the .exe installer wont launch. Attempted this with Windows Live Messenger, Skype, iTunes, Google Chrome, and Mozilla Firefox, as well as Adobe Flash 10.1.

Did a complete reinstall overtop of my current partition to no avail.

Did a FULL partition deletion (resulting in the loss of every song, game, and document on my computer) and reinstall, also, to no avail.

Help? You did a complete reinstall and you still have the same problems you describe?

DId you "repair" or did you format the disc?

If you formatted, did you zero the disc? (long format, at least)

If you completely zero a disc and install an OS from scratch, there's no way something can be carrying over. Have you disconnected all other drives and see if your symptoms remain?I'm not terribly sure what you mean by that.

From the installer for windows seven, it showed my previous partition as used space. Clicked it, and it gave me the option to delete it.

I did so, and then created a new partition.Okay. So you deleted the partition and created a new one and reinstalled the OS. Now what is the exact NATURE of your current problem?Any web based download (i.e. something being downloaded through a web browser, Google Chrome, Skype, iTunes, Adobe Flash 10.1, and the like) are quite simply...not downloading. Depending on which program im ATTEMPTING to download ill either get varying types of error messages, or none and it just refuses to download. On the rare case that I CAN download the launcher info (In the case of Mozilla) As soon as I execute the launcher, it gets an error to the effect of unknown publisher, faulty digital signature, and so on and so forth. In short, I cannot install needed programs for some reason. What version of Win7 is this ? ?

Where is the DVD from ? ?

Solve : Swap hard drive windows not booting?

Answer»

I found an old pc in my basement and I thought I would try to restore it and use it as media pc. The PC was without a hard drive and an optical dvd drive (only cd's) so I got a hard drive. I wanted to install WINDOWS 7 on it, so I connected the hard drive to my pc I use normally installed windows on that and it booted fine and worked nicely.

Then I came to swap the hard drives so I put it back into the old pc once windows was installed and I got errors, I could not boot up. I checked RAM, made sure everything was seated correctly but nothing. It then asked me whether I wanted to do a start up repair which I said yes to but once it had finished the repair I got the message:
'Setup repair cannot repair this computer automatically'. I looked in the logs and the error codes all were 0x0.

What can I do now?
ThanksYou cannot install windows on a hd on one system and boot to that hd on another system. You have to format and install the OS on the system you want to use.So how can I install the os on the old computer when it has no dvd drive. I have a spare dvd drive but that is sata and the computer only has IDE. I have a pci convertor card ide to sata will that work, I thoguht it wouldn't because of driver issues? What can I do? Thanks
Your first post is a little hard to understand - does it have a cd drive or not? If it does, you can install an Windows version that is on CD (ie, XP). If the system is that old, the likelihood of it being able to run Windows 7 is pretty slim anyway.Sorry I will try to be more clearer.
It has a cd drive but not a dvd drive hence inability to install windows 7. I only wanted to install windows 7 so it would be easier for it to talk to my main computer and I only wanted to use simply to run xbmc. I guess i could try WIN xp but I really wanted win 7 on it.1) Without a dvd drive you cannot install W7
2) If it is an old system you don't want to even try W7
3) Your license for W7 is for 1 system only - but given the situation, it really doesn't MATTER

I JUST reinstalled windows when I set up my raid 1 from a clean partition. However my key was not valid for clean installs so I had to do an in place upgrade over my new windows 7 install. But this was happening before that as well.

I have run memtest and HD Tune on one of my drives. The other is brand new so I have not tested it but I honestly do not think that is the problem.

Here is the info I got from the latest bluescreen.

It often happens over night and when I wake up I am sitting back at my desktop as if I had just logged in.

This has happened with both the current and last version of the drivers. Could it be that I have a bad unit? Maybe I should reseed the card itself?Well, the error is directly related to the card or its driver so yes, try reseating. But in the end it could be other hw or sw interacting with the video card that's at fault. I'd suggest a selective startup and let's see what happens (msconfig - uncheck all but MS startup items - reboot)Alright Ty for your help I will continue troubleshooting.Try disabling catalyst control center from your startup.

I tried to REMOVE the virus through anti-virus called  Trend-micro (office scan) and AVIRA & removed lot of virus from Laptop. But after removal of virus it is showing that Win7 is not Genuine. What should i  do for this, should i REINSTALL the OS again. Please help me out from this issue.

Solve : Windows 7 Memory Again?

Answer»

So I posted a few weeks ago about Windows 7 using up all my memory eventually.  Well I ran into a huge problem.  My music software is 32bit and can only use the FIRST 4GB of my memory.  I could swap to a 64bit program but I don't know if that would solve the problem as most of my VST instruments are 32bit as well.  Once I get to 51% usage, Cubase stops loading everything dead in its tracks.  I had to do away with RAIDXpert because I honestly can't use my music software anymore if it's eating up all the RAM but now Windows still is using 1.46GB of memory with Firefox open and nothing else with the exception of the background programs.  I've turned off the Aero theme and switched to classic hoping that would reduce memory usage as well.  Are there any other things I can do to reduce the used memory?  My VST instruments require a lot of RAM to work and I mainly use the computer for producing my music.  Maybe I'm asking for too much for the usage to be reduced further?  I'm desperate and willing to deal with system SLOW down or minor instability or anything of that nature to be able to have access to more memory in Cubase, if need be.Why don't you try using another operating system other than Win 7 for your music software?I don't have the money to buy a different operating system, this one came with the computer and the computer has 8GB of RAM so downgrading to a 32bit OS is also probably a no go for me.a 32-bit program isn't LIMITED to the first 4GB of memory. all 32-bit processes have a 4GB address space, 2GB for the program itself, and 2GB for kernel space. This is address  space not necessarily physical RAM.

That is to say, the "32-bit limit" application wise is for allocated memory by that program; for example, in order for firefox to start having problems related to that, it would need to allocate 2GB of RAM (to fill the user portion of the address space) at that point no doubt a well designed program will actually give out of memory errors.

My point is, your application stopping dead in it's tracks is not a result of windows using up memory that the application could use. Worst case scenario is simply that it is hitting the 2GB address space limit, which is also highly doubtful.

You also appear to be confused about what "used" memory is. memory Available to be used by applications is not necessarily free memory; for example, although Vista/7 allocate memory for Superfetch, it is  still considered "available" memory; Superfetch gives up portions of it's cache if an application needs memory and there aren't any other unused blocks available (which is common, since generally superfetch uses up as much free memory as possible). As a result, there isn't a inkling of a possibility that your application is having trouble simply because the memory is being used by Vista/7 (Almost certainly by superfetch).

This sounds more to me LIKE a design oversight or error on the part of the application developers (or perhaps one of the plugins or VST's).

It might be an oversight or design flaw, I have an early version of Cubase.I was paying attention to how much ram is allocated to Cubase as I load my instruments and it gets close to 2GB before it starts doing the I CAN'T LOAD! stuff. Quote from: corlenbelspar on January 20, 2011, 12:40:34 AM

Yep, then it's allocating to much memory. How much windows 7 or any other programs are using has nothing to do with it; it would hit that 2GB Address space ceiling either way.

There is, however, a way you can force an application to use more memory, but it will probably not work; you would need to set a flag inside the executable for the program; you can do this with something like PE Explorer; however, you would need to repeat this for every single DLL (such as the various Plugins) that the application uses; and there is a very high chance this will cause the application to become more likely to hang crash, not less, but it might be worth a shot if you are as desperate as you say.

PE Explorer is commercial software, but you could use the trial for this- it can be found Here

Then, for every single DLL or EXE that the program uses, you would need to:

Open it. in the left-hand PANE you should see a "characteristics" item. Click the hand holding a sheet icon there to open a dialog full of checkboxes. Here you would check off the "The Application can handle addresses larger then 2GB"; then save, and load the next one.

make sure to back up them all first!

Also: I'd check for official patches- no matter if they say anything about memory issues in the changelog or fix list.

Thanks for the info.  I learned something today.  I will look into it if I still need more memory allocated to the program after the following: I just stumbled on to a technique by accident that for some reason when I load the WAV file data of the VSTs in the Kontakt player VST instead of using their intended VST interface, Symphonic Choirs for example uses 300,000kb instead of 1,200,000kb for one choir set.  Why this is, I don't know, it's a bit disorganized and messy, but it works.  I wasn't sure if Symphonic Choir's wordbuilder would work with Symphonic Choirs loaded in Kontakt player that allows you to dictate what the choir sings, but it does.Great going, i'll try it out myself.

Solve : Java 64 bits?

Answer»

Hi guys

I have now a NEW computer with OS Windows 7 64 bits, and I am using IE8. I recently installed Java 32 bits without knowing that Java also have a 64 bits version. Should I replace my Java 32 bits version that i recently installed, by a 64 bits version? Or it doesn't make any difference at all which one of the Java version I am using.

Thanks in advanceyou need both. The 32-Bit Java runtime will be used by 32-bit browsers and other 32-bit applications that utilize java; the 64-bit runtime will be used VY 64-bit applications and other 64-bit applications that USE java.
