Solve : How to list 'Added' Favorites NON-ALPABETICALLY?

Answer»

My Operating System is Windows Vista. I want to be able to list my 'added' favourite sites in NON-ALPHABETICAL order. This was possible for several years after I aquired my computer. One day I turned on as usual to find that the list had become alphabetical. Since that day, even if I re-arrange the list,it always reverts to the alphabetical mode when I restart. I find this very inconvenient. I found it much simpler to group banks, SHOPS, TECHNICAL sites, etc. thus avoiding the necessity to trawl through a very long list especially if I could not REMEMBER the exact name. Can anybody out there help me please?  Have you considered organizing your bookmarks/favourites into folders? What internet browser are you using? One feels this is the most poignant question.  Quote from: Mulreay on JANUARY 20, 2011, 07:54:50 PM

What internet browser are you using? One feels this is the most poignant question.

Internet Explorer is the only one that automatically sorts Favourites, to my understanding. My thanks to Genius and Egghead for their responses. The operating system is indeed Internet Explorer. The only thing I can think of at the moment is given in the first response on this page:
http://social.answers.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/InternetExplorer/thread/1f99303c-f159-47d8-9855-6a482afd655f

It could potentially be quite a long process, however, and it would need to be followed EXACTLY in order to avoid any issues.

I think you can possibly drop the AVI,MP4,MKV file etc into the exe/shortcut file of the player and that will play the file. Not sure if that is what he means.

Solve : Computer freezes on Windows Vista install?

Answer»

Hello,

I'm trying to install a fresh COPY of Windows Vista on a fresh HDD. It is an Acer Aspire Laptop, 250GB HDD, and 4GB RAM. I removed the old HDD and replaced it with the brand new one.

After I boot from the Vista CD, it says windows is loading files. I then see a scroll bar similar to the one when XP is booting up. It moves a few TIMES and then nothing. I let it sit here for about an hour or so and nothing happened. I never saw the HDD light FLASH one time.

Please help. Thanks.Try with only 1 stik of RAM installed...
There have been reported issues with installing Vista on more than 2G of RAM.

The RAM can be re-installed after a succesful OS install.

How can I ignore someone in  a chat room so that the SEE IT on the screen? A O L has it BUT  it DOESN't SHOW  it to the person your ignoring.I don't believe they provide a way for you to do this.  When you ignore someone, you simply appear to be OFFLINE to them.  If you really want someone to know, I suppose you could just tell them, ALTHOUGH it would be a bit petty.

Solve : Unable to open MS Office Files?

Answer»

Have a computer running Vista Home, MS Office 2007.  All of a sudden, when I click to open a doc in EXCEL, I get "The LANGUAGE of this installation pkg is not supported by your system".  When I click on OK, it says "Configuring Microsoft Office Shared MUI (English) 2007".  Progress BAR almost COMPLETES, then I get "Unable to locate MSOINTL.dll." then it tells me to insert the disc and run setup again.

All FILES on my desktop with shortcuts to office products are inaccessible.  I had to delete and reinstall my Revo Uninstaller and Auslogics Disc defrag; the shortcuts were on the screen, but were grayed out.  Same with games on my desktop.

Have run several antivirus programs and malware removers, to no avail.  Help?

Solve : Backup software and installed programs?

Answer»
                                                   Hello everybody !

I know that for a lot of you, guys, my question would sound simple and stupid. But I don't know about that, so I'm asking. Let's say I did a BACKUP of my OS to my external hard drive using some backup software. Then one day my hard drive has gotten broken or whatever. On a new/reformatted hard drive I'm installing then my OS from mentioned backup. My question is: my programs (third party apps) that I had installed before would have been on my computer installed or I still have to install them again.
As we know installing all programs again (especially if you have a lot) is a real pain in NECK.
Do my PERSONAL settings stay the same on my computer then ?
I use my external hard drive to back up my video files but I have never used one for this purpose. If you use DISK Imaging software everything will be the same as when you created the image. As Allan says, if you make a disk image what you would get back is an exact copy of your OS and all installed programs, My Documents, emails, etc, just as they were at the TIME you made the disk image backup. As long as they were all on  the drive you made a backup of. Windows 7 has a disk image backup tool built in and I use it around once a week. Each disk imaging software package has its own bootable "rescue CD" that you can use to recover your system. You have to burn this onto a CD-R. Usually there is a wizard to guide you in this, and if you use Windows 7 built in imaging, there is a Rescue CD image you can download and burn, or you can use the Rescue Environment on the Windows 7 install DVD.

Solve : Lagging video on laptop?

Answer»

Hi there. Im having a problem with my four month old LAPTOP. When i watch any type of video on it, be it online or DVDs, it lags and the sound crackles. It has only been a problem for the last month so i know it ISNT any problems with the hardware or anything.

When i open up the task manager it shows my cpu is running at 100%, with most of this USAGE coming from things called SVCHOST.EXE. I know these things are standard with windows, but they shouldnt be running at 100%? Ive read that it could be a virus or malware, but ive run scans with AVG and malware that found nothing. Any other suggestions or solutions? Quote

Solve : cannot start computer?

Answer»

the computer worked fine this morning but when my aunt tried to DOWNLOAD a bigfish game to her account it wouldn't work so we restarted the computer. The computer updated and won't start up now. It starts booting but it comes up to the blue screen saying there's a FATAL system error and there is a memory dump. i've tried to run through safe mode and it won't work. I've tried start-up repair but it just stops in the middle. the blue light will stay on on the tower but the monitor will turn off. i've tried the system restore but there are no restore points. sometimes when you try to start it up it runs chkdsk, but it STOPPED right before stage 3 and again the blue light on the tower stays on, but the monitor is off. i don't KNOW what's wrong with the computer or why it's not working.

on a sidenote, our internet wasn't working either. the desktop(the computer with the problem) doesn't have wireless internet, but we have a wireless ROUTER so we have to plug it in via ethernet cable. the internet wasn't working on any of our laptops, but when i unplugged the ethernet cable so that the router wasn't connected to the desktop the internet started working again.

the desktop is a gateway computer and it has windows vista.

Solve : Windows 7: Blue screen when trying to run install from CDs?

Answer»

We got our first Windows 7 PC.  When trying to run INSTALL PROGRAMS, get a blue screen (small 4x4 blue window with a LONG error MESSAGES).

1. Antiviruses are shut off completely
2. Multimedia/movie CDs run ok
3. The program DISKS load and give opening menu, but the error occurs when selecting "install..." from the menu
4. The particular programs that we tried are to install Photoshop (Win 7 compatible) and HP Deskjet
5. Cd works in other computers (a mac)

This should be a no brainer.  Is there a setting that we overlooked?

Solve : Non-readable drivers for Windows 7?

Answer»

I'm not entirely SURE why and I've looked around the internet for solutions for this problem and cannot fix it. I've built my own computer and am now installing Windows 7 for the OS, yet it will not accept the driver for my DvD...or any driver for that matter. It's incredibly frustrating because I've gone around and tried various things, but nothing seems to work. I've even bought a new DvD and the problem persists. This means there's either a problem with my Windows 7 or something in my BIOS is wrong. I doubt it is my BIOS because all I've changed were the raid settings and set up a raid 0.Are you working with a 32bit or 64bit (motherboard, cpu, and software including drivers have to support it)?

Also some motherboards won't work with newer hardware until you have flashed it's BIOS  to a later version which supports a newer hardware list. This can be a nightmare if your custom building and already have the device installed. Most end up working but not to it's full performance and offical drivers can sometimes refuse to work.At the moment, I am running 64bit. Yeah, my BIOS is flashed to a more recent version. I have several drivers for several components except for my hard drives which windows 7 already has the driver pre-installed. I actually have two of them that I tried to set up into a raid0, but later removed one in order to find out whether a defective HD was causing it, but it wasn't. Hard drives and optical drives havent needed drivers since before WinME...
Clearly something is amiss here ...or we're not getting the full story here. And the advice above is the silliest thing i've read this Month BTW... Quote

Hard drives and optical drives havent needed drivers since before WinME...
Since the above statement was posted around here 2,561,497 times, I think it should be pinned in big, red letters on the top of the MAIN page Why is it silly? Flashing BIOS to support newer memory and hardware devices, etc, is commonly overlooked. I did it on my custom build to be able to support newer memory!

Quote
Hard drives and optical drives havent needed drivers since before WinME...
What, that's a false statement? The drivers are still needed, MICROSOFT just dumps a collection on their OS to attempt auto-installing, every hard drive and flash drive you plug in comes up new device detected, installing drivers. Aka: plug and pray! If the BIOS has plug n play disabled or does not support the device then Microsoft is screwed at helping.

Take a look at what comes with your Motherboard disc...
- Storage Controllers such as RAID controller drivers, etc

Lots of people sometimes miss installing their additional drivers. Ensure you have those.

If it's still not picking up on the device and your sure it's not the settings, faulty or cables connected incorrectly, I would suggest checking the PSU (power supply) is providing the device power and enough of it. Sometimes power hungry graphic cards, etc, draw the power away or the PSU isn't connected directly sharing low amps, or could be faulty. The device therefore might not show up.

Another issue maybe sharing conflicts. IRQ conflicts can occur when new hardware is installed or reconfigured. The device is attempting to share system resources with another and conflicting or running out of resources. Quote from: Azzaboi on October 03, 2010, 09:44:34 PM

there is no "collection" of drivers. it comes with a single ATAPI driver that works fine for all optical drives. Patio's implication was that they haven't needed 3rd party drivers- A.K.A: there is no "driver installation" step that any standard user could discern, which was patio's point here, since the OP clearly is able to identify a "DVD drive installation" step. Additionally, changing the "plug and Play OS Installed?" from Yes to No makes no difference in the ESCD tables, nor does it prevent ACPI or OS-controlled hardware resource management.

Quote

a motherboard disc is not going to come with Optical disk drivers. I suspect we are confused re: the original Posters request anyway. They state:

Quote
I've built my own computer and am now installing Windows 7 for the OS, yet it will not accept the driver for my DvD
The question is- Have they finished installing windows 7 and it isn't letting them use the DVD drive? or are they having problems installing windows in the first PLACE as a result of the DVD drive not being booted to? Sometimes people will say "driver" when in fact they mean "drive" in which case this could simply be a boot order issue; it also could be a problem with SATA, but I think we can rule that out since Windows 7 comes with SATA drivers as well.

Quote

he OS handles resource management when it boots. before that the BIOS does. unless you have a bajillion things installed there will always be enough IRQs to go around (unless you are using an ancient PC that doesn't remap IRQ 2 to about 255 virtual IRQs, but of course being the extreme gamer you are you are of course well aware of this), and DMA and IRQ problems are entirely redundant since the IDE/SATA controllers are essentially predefined to use IRQ 14 and 15 (primary & secondary respectively) can the BIOS/OS change this if necessary? Yes, but it won't be since it will simply assign other devices to other IRQs.Okay - thanks for the correction BC_Programmer.
Makes it's clearer, I've never encountered IRQ conflicts myself but heard they can rarely occur.

Solve : c drive out of space?

Answer»

i have a 32 bit vista system works fine but today i noticed that c drive is out of space..i dont know what should i do !!! i have already moved my user file to d drive long time ago..i mean all my video, music, pictures and documents are saved in the d drive and i havent installed any new software lately..
i ran ccleaner but there were only the recycle bin and some few temp files to delete

anybody know what is this about? what should i do? Maybe you could try to delete some old restore points. Go to start and search for "restore", then click on System Restore and delete some old restore points. Also defrag your hard drive- go to start, and search for defragmenter , click on Disk Defragmenter and then analyze. If it tells you that you should defrag, choose C: drive and press the defragment button. Then get ready to wait. Thats all i can think of from the top of my head. Hope i helped. You have move your user files from c to drive d with the same HD. What's your HD capacity? And partition? Quote from: jason2074 on October 02, 2010, 12:21:28 AM

You have move your user files from c to drive d with the same HD. What's your HD capacity? And partition?

Nothing in the post indicates the system has a single drive.i have to drives

system c is 76 GB
data d is 148 GB and i still got 78.8 free space left to use..

and i use this computer alone meaning there is only 1 user filesIs it physically one drive with two partitions or are the two physical drives in the computer?

in the computer manger it says :

Disk 0 with 3 partitions --> unnamed partition with EISA configuration, d (primary)and c (system)
Disk 1 which is not allocated and has only 514 MB

anyway, that means c and d are in the same disk drive does that differ?Yes, your C & D are both logical drives and they both exist in the same physical drive.

Essentially you need to have minimum of 200MB threshold in your operating system drive in order for windows to function properly.

The most obvious way to free up your C:\ drive and increase the capacity is to remove unnecessary programs from your PC using the Add/Remove programs option, or REDUCES the NUMBER of Restore Points from your system or run the Disk Clean Up option.

I have a similar problem when I took over the computer at my work place and I was left with 100MB in my logical C:\ drive and 40Gb in my logical D:\ drive. After cleaning up the pc, I was left with 300MB. In the end, I decided to use partition magic and resize C:\ over the D:\, since they both exist on the same physical drive.

It's been two years and I have no problem since.

Hope this may help1) Go to System Restore and disable it. NOTE - all restore points will be deleted immediately (but if you start to use a disc imaging utility on a regular basis you don't need system restore). This will free up a huge block of space.

2) Limit the space utilized by the Temporary INTERNET Files Folder

3) Delete all files in your Temp folder

4) Empty the recycle bin

Best option: Get a larger hard drive.can i delete selected restore points i like the windows system restore feature it have saved me many times
the temp files i already delete them regularly with ccleaner As suggested in the post above mine, you can use Disk CLEANUP to delete all but the most recent restore point. But as I mentioned, if you start using either a disc imaging utility OR ERUNT (a registry backup utility) on a regular basis you won't need System Restore.Given the options... yes you can delete certain restore points. System restore works only limited cases. But some virus or malware attacks will not. So as suggested previously, you must go with a larger hard drive. One is to save your user files and use more space to work on. Or if your computer is a desktop, you can slave your current HD and have it dual boot with the new one. Another option is to have a portable HD if ever you don't want your previous settings change by just backing up your loaded files to it.i am already using a portable hard drive my laptop doesnt has any of my personal files and documents only the system and programs files..

i know the system restore and also the hibernation files take up so much space but i dont think deleting them is in my advantage..i use these features very frequently Then get a larger hard drive.its already a 224 GB hard disk.. with free space of 97 GB

how old is your laptop? if you still have guarantee, just go to the store you bought it at and explain the problem there.

this problem sounds like an register problem. (an error in windows itself) if you don't have any guarantee anymore, i can recommend you to reinstall windows (windows 7 = the best  ) and if that doesn´t work, just bring your laptop to a local computer store, and let them take a look at it. this will cost your some money, so in that case, you have to make the choice if you are gonna let it get fixed or you are gonna buy a new one. What's a register problem ? ?

Solve : Microphone is permanently on?

Answer»

I apologize if this is in the wrong section, but by looking at the situation it seems it most likely deals with Windows 7 and not the microphone, at least from my perspective.

I have Windows 7 Home Premium.
MANUFACTURER: Toshiba.
Model: SATELLITE A505.
Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i3 CPU M 330 2.13GHz 2.13 GHz.
RAM: 4.00 GB
System type: 64-bit Operating System

I recently got a Logitech Labtec Desktop Microphone 600.  My father tried to set it up for me, not realizing that it automatically overrode the original microphone, and I'm not sure if that caused the problem or if it existed beforehand, as I only noticed the issue after that incident.

My perception of the issue: The microphone is turned on permanently but it's the system, not the microphone.  When The logitech microphone is not plugged in, the internal microphone is on, giving a constant light static and makes noise when I blow at it within the screen or when I touch the screen.  When I plug in the logitech microphone the internal microphone stops making noise but the logitech microphone will make noise instead in the same manner, giving constant static and making noise when I touch it or blow on it.  It occurred with both speakers and with headphones (the speakers ceasing to make noise when the headphones were plugged in but then making the noise themselves)

My attempts to fix it: I have gone to the Control Panel, Hardware and Sound, Manage Audio Devices, and disabled everything possible under the Recording section, have tried resetting the computer afterwords, and rechecking that they were all still disabled, but the same symptoms of static and noise when blown on continued.  Strangely enough, if I disabled the speakers under the Playback section in the Manage Audio Devices, no music or mp3s would play but yet the problem would continue... This occurred with the speakers, or with the headphones.
The speakers and headphones could be controlled with the headphones though, so if I muted them directly (not disabling them) then they would stop making noise, but of course no noise would then come out of my computer so that's not much help.

A friend said it sounds like a program is turning on on start up and turning on the microphone, but I'm not sure what that could be...  It doesn't seem like it's the microphone itself and could be something my dad messed up since he's not great with computers.

Thanks for any help offered, and while I could just reset the system (since I have the recovery media) that is PRETTY annoying so I'd rather avoid that if possible :/Unplug it... Quote from: patio on January 17, 2011, 03:12:36 PM

Unplug it...

Then the issue persists with the INTERNAL microphone... which I cannot unplug or disable, as I said... Quote
The logitech microphone is not plugged in, the internal microphone is on, giving a constant light static and makes noise when I blow

2 Devices conflicting. Of course the internal device is capable and ready when you launch an application for any audio environment or plug in the ADDED devices given they are recognized by the system or installed a software for the added device. If the machine is design to work only for the built-in and not work on any added devices then it is a standard  for that particular laptop. What happens if you just mute the microphone in the audio settings until you need it? The laptop seems to work fine with the microphone, it's that they both have been switched on permanently.  The microphone itself takes over for the internal microphone, overriding it correctly, whenever it is plugged in, no software needed.  The issue is in the fact that they are always on now, even with no programs running to use them (or at least none I can tell).

Nothing, it continues being on.  I'll mute it, disable it, but it doesn't affect it.Try changing Plug and play Startup Type under Windows Services(right-click and choose Properties) from Automatic to Manual then click apply. Reboot computer and check microphone static noise. If not, then go back and Disable PnP startup type, reboot and check again. If it did'nt make a difference, revert back the default settings to Automatic. Open also Device Manager to monitor hardware changes before plugging the Logitech Microphone.

Lol... well I couldn't quite figure out how to do that but I ended up rolling back the driver on the "High Definition audio device" and it fixed the problem.  I tried re-updating the driver and the problem returned, so I put it back in it's rolled back state.

The microphone stated it shouldn't have any issues with compatibility.

That fixed the issues so should I set this problem as 'solved'? And thanks for pointing me in the right direction ^.^ Quote

This is just a prime example of how the latest driver is not always the best driver.
I am glad you got it sorted out.

These are parts of a video encoder/decoder.  You could disable them from startup and just run them when you need them. Quote from: Quantos on January 19, 2011, 09:50:55 PM

He said they appeared in his start menu, not in his startup list. They were probably added by the K-Lite Codec Pack or a similar package.

To the OP, if you go to sites like this
Quote
http://www.bittorrent.am
you can expect all kinds of trouble. Also please note that this site does not support using torrent clients to download copyright material like the BBC programme you illegally obtained.

actually i was trying to download something that was a coast to coast am broadcast that from what i thought to undertand was free to the public.  although i see now that in the hyperlink it says visions of the future or something like that.  which is weird cause i remember the link and the file just being a series of numbers.  i guess one of his tv specials?  and i sure as heck did'nt get any video out of the file, i got nothing.  however i do own 4 of his books and pay comcast cable to get alot of these broadcasts including the bbc network.  which i might have saved in my dvr but as far as on my computer i'm not interested.  i still need to find out how to get coast to coast am broadcasts though...as for dlding copywrited mats/pirated software.  believe me ur preachin' to the quior mate.  i'm an artist and have personal policy i follow regarding said shizzle.

as for the orig. "problem" thanks guys i see now it's from the xvid codec.  i'm glad it's not something serious.
i think it was late at night and i was jumping to the conclusion that something was wrong w my lt.
also i gave both of you guys a 'thank kharma thing.'Thanks for the extra information there SalmonTrout, I appreciate it.  Sometimes I feel rushed and miss putting something in the post.

Solve : windows 7 system restore taking hours?

Answer»

I started a system restore on windows 7, at 3:30pm in the afternoon, its now 11pm, its still going ?? (on my laptop, 64 bit, quadcore, 6 gig ram), the system restore was dated from the 23rd or 24th, only 1 or 2 days, since those DATES I have installed several softwares and done a lot of copy PASTING of documents and downloads. loading lots of files onto my ipad etc, but I think system restore only changes the windows operating system and drivers to back where they were previously correct? It doesnt uninstall softwares or delete all your created documents since that time?? I hope not..

regardless is it usual for system restores to take this amount of time?  7plus hours,, for only 1 or 2 days,

I tried pressing the power off button but that only made it hibernate, this after 5 hours.. then when TURNED back on from hibernate it CONTINUED system restore,

the screen reads "PLEASE WAIT WHILE YOUR WINDOWS FILES AND SETTINGS ARE BEING RESTORED, SYSTEM RESTORE IS INITIALIZING." I hope that doesnt mean its not even started yet lol !!.It should only take a minute or two.

Solve : web page I want to print appears as numbers and letters -no words?

Answer»

I want to PRINT a page off a WEB page, I click the link, I am asked if I want to open or save; I want to open and print.  When it opens the pages is nothing but ooooonnnnnnnnn ooooooonnnnn.  I am very frustrated trying to get help online.  How do I change this so I can print it out pages in English?Another thing -- you may want to try to print the page directly to pdf format using the free primopdf software[url]. This will save your page as a pdf file,

Then finally print it out normally with your printer if you like the result after opening the pdf file and checking.

just out of
CURIOUSITY-- what is this the website link page you want to print? Just want to see what it LOOKS like.

Thank you-had to remove and re-install Adobe.  Now if I could only get to see PICTURES in yahoo mail I'd be a happy camper.  Read what was writte before and that didn't work for my Windows 7so I assume everything is ok for you?

Solve : mouse and keyboard delay during gaming PLEASE HELP?

Answer»

Hi all,

i have a very annoying problem with my mouse and keyboard: i bought the game 'far cry 2'. but when in-game, my mouse and keyboard react very slow. if i press, for instance, the W button to walk forward, the game reacts like 1 second after i pressed the W button. my keyboard and mouse are connected via USB connection. this is what i tried to solve the problem:

- i updated the graphic card driver
- i MADE sure the V-Sync function is disabled. (both in the Catalist Control Center and in the game, i disabled this function)
- i made sure the function in my configuration window: improve the precision of the mouse, is disabled.
- i tried to use an other USB portal to connect my keyboard and mouse

these are my PC specs:

- computer: HP g5245nl
- operating system: Windows 7 (64 bit)
- processor: AMD Athlon ii X4 635 (2.9 Ghz quad core)
- graphic card: ATI Radeon HD 5450
- i don't know which motherboard i have (if you need to know that, please tell me how i can FIND it WITHOUT opening my computer)
- 4 GB of RAM
- 1 TB of hdd

like you can see, my computer should handle far cry 2 easily. but even on the lowest settings, i have the problem, although it is like 0.5 seconds delay then. other games i play (without any problems what so ever) are:
Call Of Duty 4, counter strike: SOURCE, MotorM4X offroad Extreme and Call Of Duty 2. of course these are not as demanding games as Far Cry 2, but like i said, i have no problems with these games what so ever.

if you can help me, please try to explain to me what i should do. my computer is just 3 weeks old, so i don't want to do anything witch makes me lose my guarantee.

edit: i have this problem ONLY during gaming.

thanks, koendutch.koen, CH is glad to have you.

Your problem just might be specific to the AND quad and that game.
Have you already tried the AMD game forum?

Solve : Cant log on as Administrartor & Main User.?

Answer»

On our family laptop, i am the administrator and one of 2 users. When i try to log on, the following message appears
"The user PROFILE service failed the login.User profile cannot be loaded"
When i try to solve issue i am asked repeatedly for my password, which when input is not accepted. As i have little experience with Computers, i am lost on how to proceed.
Any advice would be appreciated.Welcome to the CH forum.
Without more details, it is hard to give an exact answer.
Can yoo provide information about then make and model of your laptop?
What operating system do you have?
Have other family members made ADMINISTRATIVE changes to the computer? What did they do?
Have you tried Safe Mode?

Do you have the printed documentation for the laptop?Thank you for your welcome and help.
The Model is a Dell Inspiron April 2009. The system is  Windows Vista, Home premium.
The only other users are 2 Teenagers who would not have had access to my user password and therefore dont THINK they altered anything. i did not make any changes from last exit to attempted logon.
As to safe mode, i cant gain access under my account as it is password protected. If their is a way to gain access via "safe mode" i would welcome direction.
Again, thanks for your help. ADDITIONALLY, i tried to log on by resetting my password. This was not successful. The following message appeared
"this feature requires removeable media, such as a floppy disk or USB flash drive. Please insert floppy disk or connect USB flash drive, and then try again."  Quote

To enter Windows 7 Safe Mode, you must log on with an account that has administrator PERMISSIONS.

Solve : BSOD every time I turn my computer on?

GF 460 NTX 1gb
4 GB Ram (2x1 + 1x2)
Windows 7 (64 bit - used to have 32 bit and problem was the same).
SB Audigy 2

I've been having major issues with my computer for the past couple of months. I keep getting BSODs, usually when I first start the SYSTEM (sometimes up to 5 times before I can get into windows). It also sometimes happens when I leave the computer idle for a while, and very occasionally when I try to open a program like firefox or word (enough to have made me paranoid about using word and losing work).

So far I have done the following:

formatted and reinstalled windows (7)

bought a new harddrive

bought a new graphics card

bought a new psu

removed audigy 2zs soundcard because apparently win 7 has some issues with it

disconnected and removed a dead optical drive

checked memory sticks all work

updated all drivers to latest versions (inc BIOS)

When I get the BSOD, sometimes I get a message about rdyboost.sys, others it says IRQL Equal to or less than (or something like that), and others its just a series of numbers and letters.

Here are the most recent reports I've been getting from WhoCrashed:

I'm honestly starting to lose the plot with this now. The system runs largely ok 90% of the time when I'm doing stuff (playing games, etc) but as soon as I turn it off...leave it for a bit ... then turn it on again, it starts booting then blue screens as soon as I get into windows.

After a restart it then seems to be working fine again...until I turn it off....EVEN manual restarts dont seem to be triggering the problem.

Please if anyone can help I'd really appreciate it .... I'm at the point of WONDERING whether I just need to buy a new Motherboard but I think that will invalidate my copy of Windows 7 because of the licensing system Microsoft use...so that really needs to be a last resort
Random BSODS which is what you have can sometimes be caused by a flakey/failing PSU...
Before giving up on the MBoard i'd borrow a known working one of the same or greater wattage and swap it in there for 24 Hours or so...

You'll know if thats the issue or not...REPLACING the PSU was one of the first things I did Any other ideas? Have you run a diagnostic on your ram yet? If not, download memtest and do so.

Having said that, how do I accomodate your request?

Thanks again.Do you have a Vista cd you can boot to? If so, do so and choose the startup repair mode from the cd.

What is new or different since the last TIME everything worked properly (ie, new hw, new sw, virus, error, ETC)?I see that this old PC i'm using timed out or something and didn't tranmitt my last post to Patios request to resend the entire BSOD message.  I'll try again as well as search for Vista OS disk that came with the system.

Still looking for original o/s disk.  I know I have it; just need to find the right box.

Thanks for all your help.

TI found the o/s *censored*.

But before I inserted disk, I just tried to DISCONNECT and reconnect every terminal I could reach in the tower.  I did ground myself.

The PC doesn't want to start.  The monitor briefly shows its going into power save mode and of course the PC does.  It no longer goes into startup repair.

For what its worth.... All three fans are running as well as I can tell the HD is spinning.

If there are no more ideas I guess we should close this thread.

Solve : Brand new PC seems to be acting slower than it should..?

Answer»

I just bought a computer yesterday, it's brand new. It's running on Windows 7, the specs are as follows:
-Intel Core i3 Processor
-Gigabyte S-Series Motherboard
-2x 2 GB Kingston RAMS
-1 GB DDR3 VGA

Yet when I run an online Web-Based browser game, the graphics aren't smooth. In fact, my old PC which had better specs ran even more smoothly. I tried setting the Graphics to Low but that didn't make a big difference.

I'm wondering what could possibly be making my PC lag, thanks a lot in advance!

(Side note, not sure if it's needed or not):

I uninstalled Avira Anti-Virus, and replaced it with AVG Internet Security 2011, since I heard that Avira used a lot of RAM, but no LUCK with that. Quote

Do you mean AVG internet security 2011 ?Yes that's what I meant, sorry, I'll change that. Quote from: Verkon on January 27, 2011, 03:03:33 AM

Well, if your old PC had better specs, then why are you surprised about this? And, I'm wondering why you bought a new PC with lesser specs than your old one.

Does the new PC have a lot of apps installed by the manufacturer that you don't need?  If any of them are running in the background, they could be slowing your machine.  You may need to do a bit a decrapifying, i.e. removing the CRAP installed by the manufacturer.

Regarding the change of anti-virus programs, I'm not surprised that that yielded no improvement.

You might also look into updating a graphics driver.  Also, if you're using Internet Explorer, try Firefox, Chrome, or Opera.  Any of the latter three BROWSERS perform better for me than IE.  With IE, scrolling of some web pages is a bet choppy while it's smooth in the other browsers. I'm sorry, I made a mistake there: My Old PC *didn't* have better specs than my current one. And I've disabled all unneeded applications running in the background, and also have removed the programs which I have no use of.

I use Chrome on this new PC, and used it on the old one too.

Solve : Wrong password? | Startup Repair?

Answer» Computer parts below.

Hello Forge here! I am new here and found this forum on google, to see if there are some skilled PEOPLE here which can help me

So the problem is...:

Yesterday, I was going to but my INTERNET cable into my switch. To do that I had to crawl behind my computer and eject the cable from my computer, put it into the switch and put another cable between the wall plug and the switch. Then put the Xbox cable into the switch. Behind my computer, I accidentally hit the Power Supply cable, which is really weak. A little touch and the computer turns of. I was in-game and running a java script, windows live messenger, skype and steam. After getting internet for my Xbox, I turned on my computer. Normally, the computer would show a menu where I could choose Start Windows Normally, or Safe MODE. But this time it showed a menu with "Launch Startup Repair" and "Start Windows Normally". It automatically went into Startup Repair because I wasn't looking at the screen. My friend told me it popped up.

Startup Repair asked me if I would Restore a earlier restore point, or Cancel. I didn't want to restore so I clicked Cancel. This continued the Startup Repair without Restoing. When this finished, Windows told me to choose my keyboard language. I knew this was a menu with Repairing options, so I clicked cancel, which restarted my computer.

When it turned on, It went to the log-in screen. I entered my password. "The uername or password is incorrect."
I've tried over 20 times to enter my password, the Caps Lock was OFF, I restarted my computer like 4 times, I tried Shift+Alt.
Nothing worked. I tried restoring my computer but an error stopped the Restore process and I could restore to 27. January 2011.

The computer have been Formated/reset 2 times because of problems with this crap OS. Last time was last weekend.

Also, my computer have been asking to start Startup Repair EVERY TIME I start up the computer. This have been happening since I bought the computer in July 2010. I didn't need to run Startup Repair every time i started my computer, but sometimes.
Then one time II brought my PC with me to my friend. I believe I put it back in the car, and not in the middle, between 2 seets. Then I couldn't start and had to format it. After that, the computer worked for a long time. But last weekend, I brought the the computer to a LAN. My friend carried it out to the car and put it in the back of the car. This could have damaged it. When I arrived, the computer wouldn't work, and I wasted 4 hours of my life just sitting there. I had to format it.

Now I am sitting here with a computer I can't access, and I gotta finish a school project.

Help, Please? ANYONE?

Solve : Video card compatibility with Win7?

Answer»

I just upgraded from WinXP Pro to Win7 Home Premium and now my Chessmaster 10TH Edition won't play even in XP Compatibility mode. I want to upgrade from on-board video to a HIS 9250 video card but can't find out if it is compatible with Win7. My MOBO is a Lite-on NR138 w/2GB of RAM. It is in an older(2000) HP desktop with PCI and AGP expansion slots. My on board grahics CHIPSET is not supported for Win7 so a GENERIC VGA driver was loaded on upgrading. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.Go with AGP; it's better than PCI.  I suspect you want to keep the COST low for this so I suggest you get http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130452 while a $20 mail-in rebate is in effect.

I found no Win 7 driver for the HIS 9250, so I'd forget about it. Thanks soybean, I'll check it out.

Two frustrating problems:

1)  I go to abc.com a lot to check news stories and comment about various issues in their message boards.

For whatever reason, the past couple of weeks I have not been able to view videos on the site – they simply don’t show.  I also haven’t been able to access the message boards on the site.

Here’s the message I’m getting:

Javascript is not enabled on your browser. If your browser does not support javascript, please visit our browser upgrade page for a list of supported web browsers. If you do not wish to enable javascript, you may still visit the text version of the ABC News ABC News.

2)  Another website I’m having trouble ACCESSING is ivillage.com (I’ve had a membership there for years).

Here’s the message I’m getting:

I’ve tried going into IE, Tools, making various ADJUSTMENT (even tried 'accept all cookies' )  I’ve been in IE Tools so much the past week or so that I’m getting dizzy.  Nothing is working.

Thanks in advance.

Did you TRY Firefox to see, if you have same issue? No, I don't KNOW anything about Firefox.  Should/can I download it?Yes, you can have as many browsers as you want. Good for troubleshooting.

Solve : not sure but big problem..?

Answer»

sorry about the subject name but i really dont know whats going on so dont even know what to call it.

I am not sure about some of the things in my PC but i have an MSI motherboard, 2g of ram and an Asus gfx card.

i can probably find numbers on them if you need them.

OK so here is the problem and sorry if it doesnt make any sense. The other day my computer had a blue screen memory dump thing. Started to restart but rather than having words on startup like when you first switch it on all i could see was a screen full of 0's.

like this

00000000000000000000000000000000000000
00000000000000000000000000000000000000
00000000000000000000000000000000000000
00000000000000000000000000000000000000

you get the idea. anyway, everything is still kinda running in the background and when it came up the screen that would say something like

"windows was not shut down properly do you WANT to:

START windows normaly or
run windows fix tool thing"

again all i can see is 0's but i can see the bars that would light up blue to show your selection.

so i picked the repair tool and that didnt work saying files were corrupt. so i guessed i needed to format.

trouble is i cant see any of the menu options to format the HDD. I can put the disk in and managed (trial and error and lots of BUTTON bashing) to install another version of windows on the PC. This seems to work ok but its not formatted and not much use to me SINCE the bios screen still cant be read.

any help on either telling me what the problem is or even how i can format the PC without going through 100 menus's i cant see would be awesome.

sorry about the grammar and spelling but its the best i could do.

thanks in advance and thanks for reading even if you cant help.if you need any more info just let me know an i will try to get it for you.Can you tell us where this version of windows was attained from and how it was installed.

Solve : Delete Files and Sub-folders?

Hi all. Any help, how to delete FILES and sub-FOLDERS from a FOLDER A, those which don't exist in another folder B? This tool is useful to MAKE backups in a short time with xcopy command and then to delete the files and sub-folders of the destination folder which don't exist in the source folder. So the TWO folders will be identical. Maybe a batch file is the solution.

Solve : IE9 Beta?

Answer»

I had on 16/09/2010 downloaded Internet EXPLORER 9 Beta version. However, I find that subsequent to this my computer is running slow, unable to access my Gmail account, standard tool menu is missing etc. I tried to uninstall it through Programme and Features, view installed UPDATES ( IE 9 is update unlike earlier version) , locate IE 9, right click IE 9 to uninstall. However the message is diplayed, I quote "An error occurred. Not all of the updates were successfully uninstalled." Unquote. I am not aware  which updates are related to IE 9 as there was no message to that effect while downloading IE9. I have, of course, Mozilla and Google chrome BROWERS through which I access the sites I want. In comparison Google Chrome appears to be the best browser, it being quick and fast. However, one deficiency which I find is that it does not carry Standard Tool Menu. The restore system did not work to eliminate IE9 as the restore point was some 4/6 hors. early on the same day. I am afraid we have no choice to decide restore date in Windows 7 Professional. Can any participant can through light on the subject matter?.    Quote from: svsabnis on September 22, 2010, 07:07:50 PM

Solve : Laptop HDMI output?

Answer»

I connected an HDMI cable from my lap TOP to my Onkyo recever to play my digital music through my home theater speakers. When I accidentally closed my laptop while playing the music, everything STOPPED working so I opened the laptop and the music resumed but the screen remained blank (dark).

Now EVERYTIME I connect an HDMI cable to the laptop, the screen goes completely dark and comes back as soon as I unplug the HDMI cable.

Whatever I am running on the laptaop (music or programs), continues running, I just don't see anything on the screen until I unplug the HDMI cable.

I have a Dell Inspiron 1525 running Windows Vista home premium with an Intel PENTIUM dual T2390 1.86 GH, a Sigmatel high definition audio codec sound card. a 220 GB hard drive with 136 GB free and 3 GB RAM.

Is there a solution somewhere to this problem?
Please advice.
