Solve : All boot disks fail on booting.?

Answer»

So, i wasn't sure where to post this since it kind of all around problem but it ends with boot disks not working so this is where it ended up : ) sorry if it is in wrong part of forum.

Ok, so the problem started when i turned my computer off one day, then when i went to turn it back on it would turn on then off, and do that 3 times then stay on and start to load up windows normally. But would freeze right before the windows loading bar would start moving.  So i tried safe mode , safe mode with command prompt and both freeze at disk.sys. Then someone told me might be power supply since the whole turn off turn on thing. So i got a PSU tester from a friend and that came back without a FAULT. So i went on to try 1 ram stick at a time with no help there then i did a SMART extended self-test on the harddrive (which took 2+ hours) through bios which came back without ERROR. From there i said screw it maybe a windows file is corrupt. So first i tried a window 7 install disk which freezes after loading files and where the windows starting screen is. Then i tried a windows xp home disk and it goes bosd after loading files. Then i tried windows vista recovery disk which freezes at windows loading screen as well. Then i said what the heck i'll try Redhat 8.0 that loads up to the install proccess then says there are no harddrives on the computer. Now the fact that i can start loading windows from the hard drive and the fact that i came back without errors tells me that it is connected and working fine but is just crashing when loading windows. All my fans are running so don't think it is a overheating issue and i was running cpuid hardware monitor before this all happened and my cpu would max at 62C on a full load and evething else was running a cooler temp. i've tried all reseting all the CONNECTION in the computer and that didn't fix the problem. So at this point i'm out of ideas and LOOKING for any input that might help other then buy a new computer which seems to the most popular idea these days.

Not really worried about anything on the computer and willing to do a format on the drive but i can't seem to get to that point by boot disk.

Any options i'm over looking would be great help.

Oh, also ran HP cpu test, memory test, and hard drive test all without errors.

We don't like bumping on here. If you are the only person on every forum you visit who (a) bumps (b) does so after 58 minutes (!) then that might explain things. When you bump a thread you started, many people will see that as you shouting for attention, demanding to go to the front of the line, and whining when you don't get an ANSWER within a short period. Human nature being what it is, many people at this point will decide not to help you even if they may know what the answer is.

In addition, your post appears to be saying "I don't want to see any answers that suggest I buy a new computer", in other words, you are specifying in advance what answers you want to get. That puts people off too. You may be in what I call "hardware failure denial syndrome", that is if anybody says "Your CPU or RAM or motherboard or hard drive may be flaky" you put your hands over your ears and repeat "La la la I can't hear you I just want to format my hard drive".

Solve : Malfunctioning video card?

Answer»

I have an HP Pavilion desktop, Model m9340f running Vista 64 bit.  About six weeks ago this terrible grinding noise began in the tower.  After some research I concluded it was the graphics card fan.  There's a HISTORY of this with this exact machine.  While I was TRYING to FIGURE out some alternative to opening the mysterious tower the noise stopped, and it's still quiet except for a brief period at start-up when it whirs like its old self.  Still, I've come to believe there's a demon in the tower.  More recently I've noticed some of the printed material in my IE browser looks as though it was typed with an old RAYON typewriter ribbon running out of ink.  Does anyone know if this has anything to do with the performance of the video card?

I hope I'm not about to kick a sleeping dog but I'm going to order an EVGA nVidia GeForce GT220 to replace whatever is lurking in there.  Does this sound like I'm on the RIGHT track?  Many thanks. Quote from: Robertgoody on February 03, 2011, 08:15:16 AM

Solve : Can't use DVD in DVD drive?

Answer»

I am trying to do a backup on a few things and the only thing I've used my DVD/RW (drive E) for is to play music CD's.  When I insert a DVD and click to back up something LIKE My Documents, it starts formatting the disk.  It takes maybe 3-4 minutes then tells me the disk formatting failed.  I've tried to use it on other programs for backing up and it continues to give me the same thing, the formatting failed.  Any ideas as to what is going on?  Oh, I have Vista, AMD Athlon 64 Processor 3500+, RAM 2.00 GB, 32-bit operating system. Thanks in advance for any help!Have you tried another BRAND of RW DVD's ? ?

How old is this drive ? ?

You could try CDBurnerXPro....Free.The whole computer is two years old, it was built by my computer dude who is no longer in computer business.  No, I haven't tried another brand of DVD but I will and I will also try the other thing you mentioned.  I've got a nasty feeling my DVD doesn't WORK, but we'll see what happens.
Not to panic...brand new dual-layer DVD burners are about 35 bucks shipped from newegg...
Installs in 10 minutes...Update
They start at 20 bucks: http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&DEPA=0&Order=BESTMATCH&Description=dvd+double+layer+burner&x=19&y=35Brilliant ! !

Solve : cant log in to facebook?

when i log out of fb i cant log back in.  have reinstalled adobe flash player and have gotten back in but if i log out i have to REINSTALL adobe flash player again. sometimes it works and sometimes it dont.  this is the only website i cant get into.I DOUBT that Flash Player has anything to do with this.  Try clearing your browser history.  I would still RUN and perform a complete scan(updated)of superantispyware and malwarebytes just in case for this is not normal...what browser are you using...

Earlier YESTERDAY every thing was working fine, but a few hours ago i noticed i can no longer watch videos WHETHER it be online or on my desktop.

Online: The video only moves like 1 frame every 3-4 secs.
Offline: The video doesnt move at all. Just a still shot of the video while the timeline plays the audio.Online: How's your Internet CONNECTION while watching video? How's the buffer, are they completed before you play the video?

Offline: What movie player are you using before you encountered the problem? Have you tried other movie player like VLC?

Also, please post your computer SPECS here so that experts may help you. Quote from: geek hoodlum on January 12, 2011, 01:21:39 AM

Its not the RAM either. A few days ago my pc started acting normal for a day but my power cord came out and turned off my computer and when i turned it back on it started having the problem again.
i think its a trojan/virus and i ran my spyware/anitvirus program and it cleaned up files but i still have the problem.
It makes me want to snap my laptop in half because no matter what i do, the problem still exists.

Solve : Problem with Windows7?

Answer»

My windows operating system is not WORKING properly. It's taking too much time to start. Sometime, after starting, internet connection isn't being connected. After restarting  PC it connects. Sometimes, after starting PC, a message shows that the windows wasn't shut down properly. Then some options come i.e. "Start windows normally" and so on. After pressing 'Enter' it starts. Why all these occurring?
 Please give me the solution.
What is new or different since the last time everything worked properly (ie, new hw, new sw, virus, error, etc)?As my PC is taking too much time for getting started, it has now also taking a long time to shut down as well. It’s quite annoying  to watch “windows is shutting down” for a long time. Whats the problem with my PC? Any help will be useful for me. Quote from: Allan on February 04, 2011, 09:22:07 AM

ACTUALLY, I re-installed OS and after it this problems  are occurring.I’m having a problem with my pen drive too. It is, sometimes when I try to bring out my Pen drive manually (by clicking on the icon and then by clicking on “eject the device”), it says that this device cann’t be removed, it is using by the system…  etc.
So, I’m wondering why this is occurring? Any solution? Thanks in advance.

N.B.  I use Windows-7 as Operating  System, Mozilla Firefox as browser  and Panda Cloud Antivirus as antivirus. And I didn't get any email as answer was made. Why?Please stop posting every two MINUTES. THANK you.

Did you do a clean install of the OS? If so, you need to go to the website of your computer manufacturer and download and install all drivers, starting with the chipset driverThis is where all the chat people land because their issue was not solved...

Solve : Computer turning on but not booting?

Answer»

Hello and thanks for the help. My parent's pc wasnt working so I took a look at it. I noticed the chipset fan wasnt working and took it to a repair shop. They SAID that that wasnt the problem, the CPU was well-ventilated and most likely that chipset wasnt working for a while and the problem was not hardware because they tested it/ According to them, is a SOFTWARE problem and wanted me to PAY $85+tax, which I don't have.
So here's the symptoms: when I press the power button, the lights come on, fans starts and I hear all the familiar noises BUT nothing shows on the monitor.
One thing I've noticed, whenever it DOES work, it emits a beep right after it turns on and everything goes well. I DO NOT hear that beep when it doesnt work.
When it DOES work (beep is heard) and windows load, it crashes a few moments after loading desktop and icons, etc.
Yesterday it did boot and I went to SAFE MODE to try and get all the data and it never crashed! So I think it's probably something on startup that's causing it to crash, right?
So I've read somewhere to make a AVG boot disk and I've done and tried and switched the boot order to CD/DVD 1st. It was working and then got stuck at some point and I just restarted it but I just get black SCREEN now and NO beep.
Motherboard model is MSI MS-7125, OS is Windows 7.
Let me know what else is needed.
THANK YOU SO MUCH for your time. It is highly appreciated.

Re-seat RAM and all add-on cards. How do I do that?
Thanks

Oh, just a quick update.. I was running it normally now (even turned it on and off 3 times) and ran an anti virus and nothing was found. I restarted it to see if it would work again and nothing. Just the black screen and NO beep. It's LIKE random..

Solve : Computer Crashing and No Longer Switching On?

Answer»

Hello to anyone reading this post. I was not sure where to post this on the forums (so if it is in the wrong place then please know it is because I am new to this). I am hoping that someone will be able to help me out with this because I have genuinely no idea what could be wrong with my computer.

First some background: I use a Dell Laptop, the model is a Latitude E6500. When I got it I also made sure to make all the hardware be as good as I could get. As a result it has 8GB of RAM, an Intel dual core processor (I think), unfortunately I cannot remember the rest, and I can't find out the rest because it is not switching on. Basically it is a pretty *censored* good laptop and has a LOT of good hardware in it. I run Windows 7 Professional (I don't know if that makes any difference to the type of Windows 7 it is). I also use the free Anti-Virus program Panda (recommended on the Microsoft website) and usually scan my computer once every week or so. So all in all I have a pretty good laptop, and as of last Friday (when I last scanned it) it does not have any viruses or major problems with it (it does have a tendency to overheat and sometimes switches itself off, I THINK, because of this).

Now to the issue:
Yesterday I had a few programs RUNNING. Google Chrome, World of Warcraft, MSN, Skype and I am not sure if anything else was running. Chrome was, at the time only open on Facebook. Then my brother came storming into my room and, for reasons that are far to childish and trivial to post here, he slammed the laptop shut with a LOT of force and yanked out the charger cable as well (I was unfortunately lying down and so was in a poor position to stop him). When I opened the laptop again it ran fine for about a minute and I checked for any visible damage to the computer itself (there was nothing visible, not even a crack on the screen or anything). Suddenly the computer crashed and just switched itself off. At first I thought this might be because it overheated again (as I mentioned this has happened once or twice), but when I clicked the power button the computer acted strangely.
Now when normally switching on, the computer shows a DELL loading screen (I assume this is to do with the bootstrap loader loading the operating system) followed by some white text in the top left corner (it always disappears before I can read it, but I think it is to do with the model of the laptop) and then the login window appears. When I tried to switch on my computer after the crash, it simply went from the FLASH of white text to a dark navy blue background and then it stays like that.
Since then, nothing I do can make it go to the login screen. I have tried pressing Ctrl-Alt-Del at the black screen bit and for some reason that just restarts the DELL loading screen. I tried switching it off and on. I left it on overnight so that it would run out of power, then I plugged it in and switched it on this morning (no affect). I tried pressing F12 for the "Loading Options" (nothing happened). I also tried to pretend that the black screen was the login window and entered my password, hoping that it was just a problem with the screen (once again no affect).

So there you have it, in as much detail as possible. If you have any suggestions for what I could do, if I have posted in the wrong section of the forums, if you could direct me to some other venue of help, then please please please don't hesitate to respond.
Hoping to hear something soon.Start with a check of your hard disk. Go to the website of your hd manufacturer and download their diagnostic utility. Burn it to disk, boot to it, and let it run.I'm really sorry but, I am a at a very low beginner level. How can I find out what my HD manufacturer is (will it be in the specifications of my laptop?). And how can I burn something onto my hard drive if I can't even switch it on? How can I even run it?

Thanks for the information, but really, I have NO idea to go about doing what you suggested

It would appear I fail...Tell you what, just download seatools: http://www.seagate.com/ww/v/index.jsp?locale=en-US&name=seatooldreg&vgnextoid=480bd20cacdec010VgnVCM100000dd04090aRCRD

As for burning it to cd, use another system.Ok, I'll get right on that. Is the Hard Drive likely to have been damaged simply by the blunt force of being slammed shut? We'll find out.as soon as you press power button start holding down F2 to try and get into the bios setup program, then look to see if there is an option for self test of the harddisk. Please just follow my instructions. Thank you.I am trying to burn the SeaTools thing to a disc. However to do this I am using my downstairs computer, which is a Mac NOT a PC. Will this be an issue? Ignore this, I figured it out. I've just inserted the CD with the Diagnostic Program into my laptop. Waiting to see if there any results right now.Nothing is really happening... Quote from: Sabor117 on February 08, 2011, 09:45:23 AM

What does that mean?Well I did as the link you sent me told me. I downloaded the file and burned it straight on a DVD-R. Then I put the DVD-R into my laptop and started it up. But as USUAL the screen simply went black. Is the cd running the scan? Are you booting to the cd? Did you burn the iso to the cd using an iso burner? If not, follow these instructions:

Solve : Installing Magicdisc on Windows 7 Problem Solved?

Answer»
Problem Solved. While attempting to install Magicdisc version 2.7 (build 106) on Windows 7 Ultimate 32 bit edition, the installer would appear to quit / hang / stop / fail.  This would occur after the installation had actuallybegun and while still on the installer screen which displays two PROGRESS bars.  The last filename still showingwas mcdbus.cat.  I assumed it was a problem with an unsigned driver.  After hours on google finding and applyingmany methods, techniques. and programs to turn off windows security for driver signature verification the problemstill existed.  OK, this post is getting way too long and would be 2 or 3 pages if I explain everything I did.Solution:  Since Magicdisc installer takes control of the whole display area and keeps the focus on itself, I wasunable to see that a Windows Security box pop-up was being displayed on the Windows Desktop.  Windows was askingfor permission to allow or deny installation of the unsigned driver.  The installation could not continue untilthe Windows Security box pop-up received a response from the user.  Since the pop-up was hidden behind the installerscreen, I had no idea it was there and waiting for a response from me.Now here's the TRICK.  You have to be quick and it's all a matter of timing.  Start the Magicdisc installer and proceedas normal until you reach the installer screen that says "Click the Next button to begin the installation blah blah blah".Now DO NOT click the next button.  Now pressing enter at this point would have the same effect as clicking on the nextbutton and the installation would begin.  This is what we want.  Now, hover your mouse cursor over the "Show Desktop Icon"on the quick launch bar.  If you don't have one just pin a "Show Desktop Icon" to the task bar.  This is where the timingcomes in.  You are going to place one finger on the enter key and one finger (Opposite Hand) on the mouse button with themouse cursor still hovering over Show Desktop Icon.  Now you will press the enter key (which will start the actualinstallation process of Magicdisc), followed by, just as quickly possible, clicking the Show Desktop Icon. The idea is to get the Magicdisc installation process started, but then before the installation process reaches the pointthat it triggers the Windows Security pop-up, you have already clicked Show Desktop which will HIDE the screen showingthe installation process.  This way when the pop-up appears on the Desktop, you will be able to respond to the pop-upgiving Windows permission for the unsigned driver to be installed.  After allowing permission for the driver to beinstalled, don't get in a hurry.  Allow time for things to happen.  On my system it took about 30 seconds before theMagicdisc Installer displayed the finished dialogue box.  I haven't yet rebooted to test the installation but it appearedto finish sucessfully.  Good Luck.   Or you could just minimise the install window before proceeding...

Are the CD and DVD lasers seperate?  I have blowen the lenses off.  Is it new drive time?
HenryIn fact, you have 4 lasers, CD read, CD write, DVD read, DVD write.
How old is the drive? Quote

I have blowen the lenses off

Try cleaning the lens with a cotton bud. Soak the bud in a small amount of water with alcohol(70% isoprophyl alcohol) then squeeze out the excess water/alcohol from the bud leaving it just that cotton bud half-wet enough to clean the glass lens and dries off quickly because of the mixture with isopropyl alcohol. Clean the lens just either clock-wise or counter.  Lens are made out of glasses and do not just make contact on dust or fibers(which can be blown)cause by CD's we used exposed in our surroundings, but stains also cause by moist due to temperature. Just happens to learn from a good old friend of mine who is in repairing house APPLIANCES. It saved me a lot, not just on my electronic appliances with lenses and just RECENTLY my dvd writer.  Quote from: jason2074 on September 18, 2010, 10:37:13 AM

Solve : Windows 7, firewall, is it good enough??

Answer»

I am just wondering if to install a free firewall for Windows 7 Ultimate. However, I'd like to know if the one already built into Windows 7 Ultimate is just as good? What are your thoughts om this. Thanks!!The built in fire wall is excellent at preventing incoming THREATS but does nothing to prevent outgoing traffic (ie, malware sending out info). Having said that, I've NEVER used a third party firewall on any system. I use the built in Windows firewall, a router (which has a NAT firewall), and several anti malware utilities. In the end, it's your call.I also have a firewall on my router, so do you think the two will be good enough? Thanks!!It is for me. As I said, I also am very careful about viruses and malware.Do I need to change the Windows 7 firewall settings after an install, or will the default settings be good enough? Thanks!! Windows Vista and 7's Firewall filter both ingoing and outgoing connections. Thanks BC. They do indeed. I was mentally stuck in XP mode  See how you are ? ? ?

All the big grins aside, here's one answer that nobody likes to hear, because it points the finger back at the true source of the problem.....the USER.

Keep the ET's off of your computer and you'll never have to worry about one of them WANTING to "Phone Home".

That's why I have for years advocated that every computer has a "Package" of Security Software installed that can either block or find and remove all viruses, trojans, worms and Spyware.

No one program from just one company will do the job and do it correctly.

Nice seeing you again 'Patio'

Solve : Belkin Router help?

Having problems my wireless G+ MIMO router. Comcast came and installed my internet and my laptop can't GET online? It shows that there is an internet connection but when I try it says there's not a connection? If I disconnect the router and just use the Comcast modem on my PC, I can get online? I use internet explorer, the same as the old house. So FAR I have tried disconnecting, resetting, and turning off the router. Any ideas of what may be wrong? Thank youDid you try re running the routers set up??? also delete that wireless conection in the "manage wireless networks" section and then try to re connect   When the wireless router was working at the previous HOME, was it a secure wireless network?  (WEP or WPA?)  Have you rebooted the modem as well as the router?Do you mean for me to re install the software? Solve : partitioning and cloning problems?

Answer»

This was my situation
Two hard drives
1) windows installation and programme files (c) 500gb
2) Music and videos (d) 250gb

The second hard drive started to become full, so I thought since the os wasn't taking much space, I would switch the os and programme files onto the second hard drive and then move the music of videos onto the 1st bigger hard drive.

This is what I have done so far.
1)Made a partition on hard drive 1 (G) and copied all user files from hard drive 2 into that new partition.
2)Formatted hard drive 2
3)Cloned C drive onto hard drive 2 using EASEUS
4)Thinking job was done I thought I COULD BOOT up of the clone and begin to erase the source of the clone. But windows would't let me boot up of the clone and told me to insert the installation disk and run the repair programme. I did this.
5)I was able to boot and login, but when I am logging in I get the MESSAGE 'windows is PREPARING your desktop' and then after that when it logins I am greeted with a black screen with nothing on it. I can only bring up task manager nothing else.
6) I am able to boot up fine when I plug the original C drive back in but when I take that out and use the clone I get the black screen problems.

I don't now what I am doing wrong, from bios I have chosen the new clone to boot up but nothing. Also previously I could not format the C drive, when I was trying to get rid of the original it told me it was in use after changing the properties of the clone drive making that the primary boot device I can now format, should I WISH the C drive which shows that it is not using the C drive. What is going on?

Thanks for any help?Solved
I just had to rename the drives and make sure that the new clone was called C

Solve : SATA/IDE to USB 2.0 Adapter to access files on old drive?

Answer»

My mother board fried and I purchased a new computer.  I PULLED the SATA hard drive from the old computer and purchased a SATA/IDE to USB 2.0 Adapter to access the files. Once the drive loaded and the adapter was ready to use, it cam up as Drive D.  When I tried access drive D, I received the message, below, about the old drive.  At that point, I did not go any further with trying to access the old drive for fear that if I did it was going to FORMAT or RECOVER or do something undesirable to my new computer. I just want to open the old hard drive up as a folder to extract files off there. Please advise.

Recovery Partition
Warning!

This area of your hard drive
(or partition) contains files used
for your PC Recovery.

Do not delete or alter these files.

Any change to this partition could
prevent any recovery later. If you are sure that is on the old drive, it sounds like your old (dead) computer's recovery partition. This is now USELESS, since the rest of that computer has died and gone to heaven. However, if the recovery partition is the only thing that comes up as a drive letter, then you have a big problem because there should be another much bigger partition that contained your data. This may have died too, I guess. But how are you "accessing" this drive? Is it showing up as a drive letter in Windows? Only one or more than one? What did you do that MADE this warning show?

Solve : Intel Core i7 930 running hot or not??

Answer»

I have an Intel Core 930, the temp on idle is 51 C, do you think this is to hot? The system was sold to me overclocked to 4Ghz. I'd also like to know the max temp these cpu's should run at. Thankyou!!For i7 Core - it normally idles 40 C and goes up. It's just recommended to keep it under 80 C.
That's a super overclocked processor, so might run a little hotter for max performance!

Intel Core i7 CPUs throttle down their speed starting at 100C. So, 100C is the maximum operating temperature of Intel Core i7. Due to the great power management, even at this temperture it would still run stable.

I've peak tested a i7 Core up to full stress testing at 100C and had no errors!
They are really something, but not recommended to keep them running at that high, will probably lower the life span.

The i7's are the hottest running processors out there.

In the long run, the cooler you run your CPU, the better, however i7 Core is very comfortable at up to 80C, even though this would be considered a very hot temperature with an Intel Core 2 Quad CPU or less.

To help, you could remove any cables away from the components to allow airflow and ensure all fans are running smoothly and possibly get a liquid cooling system for it.

How does that baby handle the games?   Not installed a game yet, but I am so looking forward to it . Thanks for the info!! Quote

100C is the maximum operating temperature of Intel Core i7
Total nonsense and dangerous statement.

I can't quote max temp for I7-930, but both, 920 and 940 are listed at 67.9C!

Hey, for a couple of weeks it works great.  Also doubles as a hot plate to heat water for your tea.Broni - You are correct it's a extremely high temperture (100 C) and should be avoided. However, it's no nonsense.

You missed reading the rest of my post:

They are really something, but not recommended to keep them running at that high, will probably lower the life span.

At the maximum 100 C, a safety feature kicks in slowing the processor down inorder to reduce the temperature so it won't go above that. I also said in the long run, the cooler you run your CPU, the better. The feature, you're talking about is nothing else, but an "emergency brake".
You're not saying, you want to drive your car using emergency brake only?

This discussion is senseless, because the FACT is that any minute you use your computer while CPU temperature exceeds its maximum temperature, you're causing non-reversible damage to your CPU.
End of the story and there is no reason to argue anymore. All CPU's since the 386SL throttle back their speeds when they get too hot.

Broni's point is it's not designed to do that very often. It's like constantly needing your car to go into overdrive to get over hills. It's a designed-in feature, but it's only there to prevent the car from stalling out altogether- you shouldn't need to use it on every hill, otherwise there is something else wrong. Same story with CPUs. during hot weather or in extreme circumstances are the only times a CPU should ever even come close to approaching their max operating temp, and one shouldn't assume everything is fine just because it's still working.

Most motherboards temp warnings are set a lot lower then 100c for very good reasons.

Doesn't mean they are comfortable. And it certainly doesn't mean that its work flawlessly as long as you keep it below that temperature. This is especially true with an overclocked chip, which not only runs hotter then a stock CPU but also has different thermionic properties so that the stock CPU's "max operating temp" may be completely off the mark.I am lucky really because it was the computer firm I bought this from that overclocked it. They also placed a 3 year warranty on it aswell, so I presume if the CPU fries they will be the ones responsible  . Anyways, back to my question. What temp do you think this should run at both idle and max? The point I'm trying to make is it's actually quite hard to damage the i7 Core from high temperature. Unless your do something crazy like increase the q-cores too much, your'll be very unlikely to fry the cpu. I'm not saying anything about getting it up to or running it continuously at 100 C temp, that would be crazy. However, if it does there are some safety features. Plus it's under warranty, you can keep an EYE on the temperature but it should worry you too much.

As I said before:
Quote
For i7 Core - it normally idles 40 C and goes up. It's just recommended to keep it under 80 C.

and
Quote
In the long run, the cooler you run your CPU, the better.

Recommended Temperatures (you can give or take 10 C - up to 20 C)
Idle Temp: 40 C
Max Temp: 80 C

Fans, closed areas, computer near the floor, dust build up, cables, room temperature, size of computer case, and the number of other components, etc, all can affect it.

Since overclocked to 4Ghz, I bet the temperatures should be around 50-80 C (min/max) when gaming, which is fine.
If you really wanted to, or if you believe it's too hot, with a cooling system like a CPU Cooler by Thermaltake, you could keep it under 65 C at heavy load. The bit I don't get is why it's running 52c Idle? Do you think it's because it's been overclocked? I know cooler I have is a good one, so are these temps due to the overclock?I know nothing about overclocking, but under NORMAL circumstances CPU idle temperature shouldn't be higher than couple of degrees over your room temperature.
...and I like to keep it this WAY and I do.Yes, overclocking your processor draws more power and make it run hotter. If you do extreme overclocking it is recommended to use liquid cooling or something similar. Also being i7 Core, they are well known to run quite hot compared to other processors (this is normal). In your case, it should be fine.

Make sure the heatsink is clamped down correctly and firmly (a bad mount can increase temperature a lot). CHECK the max temperture when doing a stress test or playing some game with high system demands. If that's going over 80 C then you might want to think about cooling. Also note that there are four core temperatures, not just one.

Do you have any neon lights (extras), a lot of components (hard drives, etc), high powered graphic card(s) / SLI, or a mess of cables in the computer case? Whats the size of case? AMOUNT of intake / out take fans? Quote from: Crafty on September 15, 2010, 07:54:29 PM
The bit I don't get is why it's running 52c Idle? Do you think it's because it's been overclocked? I know cooler I have is a good one, so are these temps due to the overclock?

My Stock speed Q8200 idles at around 55(c) or so, usually only get's to about 60 under load so I don't worry about. (the GPU causes a lot more problems with heat anyway). Nothing higher then a Pentium 3 is going to idle at less then about 30 degrees without some sort of liquid cooling or cryogenic thing. If it's of any help, my i7-920 runs at 46C idle and around 58C load (encoding with all 4 cores/8 threads at 100%).  This is using a Zalman 9700 HSF.

i7-930s tend to run at similar temps.

i bought it last year around this time.Toshiba has some of the best warranty support available.  I would first try with them as this may be a common issue for them.  I'm just thinking that if it is still under warranty then you might as well get what you paid for. With Windows 7 ^$ bit ALL drivers must be 64 bit.
Whenever you install anything that PLUGS into the USB port there is the possibility of wrong installation. (Windows 7 automatically installs the right drivers. But if you over ride Windows 7 and FORCE the install of wrong drives, it is wrong.) The wrong driver will crash of hang the system  Or not even show a problem until later. The drivers from Toshiba, the original ones, are the correct ones. Other devices, printer, cell Phone and Web cam would have the wrong drivers. Unless it explicitly says 64 bit.

Solve : Epeon printer?

Mt PC works OK with my Epson printer but my laptop will not recognise it. I have tried reinstalling the programme and changed USB ports.
I have recently installed Norton. COULD this be a solution?
You've fail to mention what Operating Sytem your PC and Laptop is!

and PERSONALLY, i dont think installing Norton is a solution to anything! The printer drivers need to be installed on the laptop also....have you DONE this yet ? ?Thanks I am operating Vista. Of course I installed the drivers on the laptop. twice, in fact.I have also tried installing with the printer disconnected.Sorry, re above. This should read it is Vista on the laptop and W7 on the PCVista drivers ? ?
USB printers should remain dis-connected during install until prompted...
Remove the printer in Device Manager...
Use Add/Remove to uninstall the software...
Power down and unplug the USB cable...
Power up and try again. Quote from: reddevilggg on February 11, 2011, 07:47:58 AM

Hi.
I've been having an issue with my PC, which has started only recently.
It's running Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit, and there's a distinct possibility someone has tampered with the system. -_-
I tend to leave it running whilst I'm away, and I've started getting "Windows has recovered from an unexpected shutdown."
It's happened about five times now, especially when I'm running my MineCraft server, but I'm never at the machine when it has.

1) Update all drivers if there is a more current one available  (your ati video card, sound card, ETHERNET card, chipset, etc)
2) Check for a bios update
3) Run checkdkisk: Right-click on a command prompt icon and open as administrator. In the command prompt window type:chkdsk /r  (then press ENTER). You'll be told the disk is in use and asked if you want to run checkdisk on the next boot. Say yes, exit the command prompt window, and reboot.
4) Download memtest (www.memtest.org), burn it to disk, and check ram
5) Run full scans with both your AV utility and MalwareBytes

Also, look in device manager and see if there are any errors please.

Solve : HELP!!! my memory is full!!!!?

Answer»

my laptop has 500 gigs but when i go into 'my computer' my memory says there is two hard disks of 228 gigs. The first ONE is full.. it is CALLED acer(C) how do i make it bigger bringing memory from the other one called DATA (D)?? please help! thanks

First, i think you're confused between memory and harddrive. Your hardrive (C:) is used for storage not memory. Memory is the amount of RAM you have.

Secondly, are you sure that both drives are 228GB, usually the second drive is a 'recovery drive' which can be used to restore the machine to the factory settings and is of smaller capacity. I am assuming this because you've called it DATA.

Thirdly, to free up any space on the C: drive, you could always back-up some files etc

yeah ur rite im probably very confused, i dont have a clue about this! all i know is my acer (C) drive is 228 gigs and is very nearly full abd my data (D) drive is empty! is there a way of extending my acer (C) drive?
Is the D: drive empty? What is the capacity EXACTLY. They're usually quite SMALL.

Have you tried 'Disc cleanup'? Start / All programs / Accessories / System TOOL / Disc cleanup

As ive said before, you could back-up to disc or get a external hardrive or memory stick.

You could always move your 'My Documents' to the empty drive.  Just right click on 'My Documents' and select 'Properties' from the context menu.  Then it's just a matter of using the 'Move' button and selecting a new destination.
That's just one way to free up HDD space.
This may be a problem. The OP might be assuming that just because he has no files on the D: drive that it is empty, Yet it might be the recovery drive because in his first post he labeled it DATA. HENCE -

Do you have two physical hard drives or are c: and d: two partitions on one drive?Laptop...1 HDD.

Who set it up this way ? ?
Normally D: only contains the Recovery partition for the laptop...Thanks - missed the laptop part.one thing, maybe try clearing out system restore points, if you're have system restore active (XP, vista or win7 machines).

I tend to find that the accumulation of many old system restore points start to significantly eat away at your HDD space (at least, that's how it went on my pc).

A problem OCCURRED within a read or write to a FAT16 or FAT32 file system drive. There may be a physical problem with the disk, or an INTERRUPT Request Packet (IRP) may be corrupted. Other common causes include heavy hard drive fragmentation, heavy file I/O, problems with some types of drive-mirroring software, or some antivirus software. I suggest running ChkDsk or ScanDisk as a first step; then disable all file system filters such as virus scanners, FIREWALL software, or backup utilities. Check the file properties of FASTFAT.SYS to ensure it matches the current OS or SP version. Update all disk, tape backup, CD-ROM, or removable device drivers to the most current versions.

Solve : BOOTMGR is missing...?

Answer»

So I REBOOTED my laptop after a few updates installed.

I was presented with a black screen and text saying

"BOOTMGR is MISSING
 Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to reboot."

And this process was practically a loop...
I'm downloading a Vista recovery ISO right now.
But once I rebuild the BCD Store to fix the BOOTMGR.exe from the Vista recovery disc (my PREFERRED method of repair), will I lose all my data on my HDD??More than 1 OS on this machine ? ?

At any rate once you have DLoaded the RC and succesfully created a bootable cd with it boot to the CD...
At the COMMAND prompt type fixboot and hit Enter.
Remove the CD and re-boot.

If no joy-joy repeat the procedurs except this time type in fixmbr and hit Enter...
Again remove the CD and re-boot...Im having the exact same problem on my DELL Inspiron laptop. Where can i get the right things to fix it ?Take a look at the guide over here for help. http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/fixing-bootmgr-is-missing-error-while-trying-to-boot-windows-vista/

If you don't have a Windows Restore Disk, you can CREATE one with a friend's computer. http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Create-a-system-repair-disc

Ignore the below unless you're familiar with Linux.

If you have a Linux Live CD lying around (unlikely), then you can restore the Windows mgr by entering these commands in the terminal.

Code: [Select]sudo apt-get install ms-sys
ms-sys --mbr /dev/sda

Make sure you know which hard drive you're performing this on. If you only have one storage device plugged in, it's most likely /dev/sda. You can check with GParted.

Solve : How to boot a partition from Windows Repair CD??

Is there a way I can disable this program and therefore uninstall it when in the PC, or boot Win7 from the Repair disk?Try running the repair disc and see if that will FIX the problem by its SELF. i recommend using easybcd for your boot selector/manager

Solve : System restore problem after messing with registry?

Answer»

I have a toshiba L515 with windows 7. i used regseeker and deleted over 10000 entries. it said it saved a back up but i cant even get into the computer. all i have available to me is the system restore options but nothing works. blue screen appears and always goes to automatic repair and never works. then goes to the advanced options but nothing works either. it cant get into windows at all. what can i do? We always tell people to avoid registry cleaners - this is the very reason - the can cause major problems and never do ANY GOOD at all. If you can't get into the system at all you can boot to the OS cd and try the repair options.or perhaps you probably have to do the factory recovery options if the repair FAILS. But this will delete your FILES apparently.

or maybe try an 'in PLACE' upgrade if you have a upgrade CD. Which means you select home version if that's what you already have installed and see if it will upgrade and hopefully your key that toshiba sent you with your laptop will work again to activate the windows. IF that work, you are in luck and have all your data intact.

I don't know about win7, but doing an in place upgrade with VISTA worked fine with me when I tried. Good Luck

Solve : windows vista to windows 7 upgrade?

Answer»

i have a dell laptop with windows vista ultimate and recently PURCHASED a windows 7 ultimate upgrade.  the upgrade disc came in today and this is what is SAYS on the disc "for use only as an upgrade to a qualifying hp windows 7 upgrade option pc."  i called the company i ordered the upgrade from and they tell me it will upgrade windows on any vista pc.  she's also saying that if i open it and try it and it doesn't work that i can call back and no problem to return it.  i'm doubting this to be true and hate to open the sealed disc before knowing if it will work or not.it should work.

"for use only as an upgrade to a qualifying hp windows 7 upgrade option pc." simply MEANT it was included when you bought specific select HP PC's. It doesn't mean that the upgrade is limited to HP pc's .

I think if dell sent you the upgrade, they would give you a working CD. They don't want an unhappy customer

If it STILL doesn't work, have it sent back, like the lady said to you. Hopefully you have the name of the person who told you that info and the DATE and time when you called.Vista IS a qualifying Windows 7 upgrade option. Just do the upgrade.

Solve : windows XP to Windows 7 on the same computer?

Answer»

I had windows XP had for years sense 2004. I now downloaded windows 7 for some reason computer doesn't read the VIDEO card and no SOUND with my speakers. Does this have any effect on the motherboard or is it to old, and If i could upgrade on the same motherboard will it work.you need to install the drivers for those devices What is the make of your motherboard.?
Windows 7 may or may not be able to use the same drivers as XP. Find the original CD that came with the motherboard, if you can. OTHERWISE, go the the site of the manufacture and SEE if they have new drivers for the motherboard.

The right motherboard driver set is  needed to:
Improve the Video display of the built-in video.
Enable the sound of a built-in sound.
Enable built-in network adapter.
Improve Hard Drive performance.
Improve the USB performance
Resolve unknown hardware issues.

Solve : Internet not connecting on new laptop?

Answer»

I just bought a dell inspiron about a week ago and I'm having trouble connecting it to the internet. Wireless WORKS fine when I use it, but when I TRY to use broadband at home it won't connect. I saw somewhere to type in ipconfig/renew and it worked, finally connecting. Then the next day it didn't connect again, so I tried doing the same thing and it said operation couldn't be completed because local area connection 2 was UNPLUGGED. So I checked everything to make sure and everything was plugged in. Also, I checked to see what local area connection 2 even is and it said it was "BROADCOM virtual wireless adapter." I don't even know what this is or want to use wireless because I'm using a router/modem. But I checked everything outside and inside the computer, including seeing if the drivers needed updated and it says everything is fine. I'm at my WITS end with this thing! Oh, also I have another laptop (which im using now) that works just fine, even without the ethernet cable plugged in. PLEASE HELP!
Is that you Ralph ? ?

Solve : Computer Freezes on "Starting Windows" Screen During Startup (Win7)?

Answer»

(I'm not quite sure exactly which forum to put this in since I don't know what is causing the problem. I apologize in advance if this is the wrong ONE.)

I am running Windows 7 Professional 64-bit on a Gateway LX6810-01.

This morning while starting up my COMPUTER it froze on the "starting windows" screen. When I restarted I was asked to run startup repair which prompted me to use system restore and I allowed it to do so. The computer restarted and managed to GET to the desktop, HOWEVER nothing seemed to be working correctly. So I restarted again.

This time it started up normally and I took the OPPORTUNITY to run chkdsk on my internal hard drive. To get ckdsk to run I had to restart the computer. Chkdsk ran, but when the computer restarted after running chkdsk it got stuck on the "starting windows" screen again.

Another restart and startup repair shows back up. It asks me to do another system restore, but I refuse and let the repair keep running. When it reaches the end of repair routine the repair informs me that startup repair cannot automatically fix my problem. The computer restarts and starts up normally.

I am currently on the problem computer and it seems to be behaving normally at the moment.

Solve : Where Is this Disk Space Coming From??

Answer»

In my other thread i had a problem watching videos without lag.
I decided to re-install Windows 7 and when it was done, i noticed i had only around 3 GB of 18 free.
Where is this 15 Gb coming from and how can i increase my amount of space?Windows 7 will generally take up about 10-15 GB. There's nothing you can do about it other than getting LESS space demanding operating system (Linux), a new hard drive, or deleting some unneeded files with a tool like CCleaner.

Edit: Wait, how much storage does the hard drive report on it's box? If you had more space before, it's likely something went wrong with the partition stage of your reinstallation. How did you reinstall the OS? Did you format first? An 18G partition is a bit tight for a Win7 install with apps...
Just sayin... QUOTE from: Allan on February 16, 2011, 03:59:42 PM

Solve : Icons on desktop have 'missing file icon' instead of shortcut arrow??

Answer»

Hi, a while ago, I was annoyed with having the little SHORTCUT arrows on desktop icons. I decided to try to find a way to have them removed, so there would be no arrows for shortcuts, and I looked on the internet for how to do so.

1. One site had me download a registry edit thing, and change my registry.
2. Another site let me download a program that would supposedly remove the shortcut arrows.

And, for a while, one of these methods worked, and I didn't have any arrows on my icons! But then, for some reason, it backfired, and now I have that strange 'unknown program' icon in place of an arrow. Here, http://i168.photobucket.com/albums/u...s/Untitled.jpg
(It's a safe image, don't worry)

The problem is, I really don't know which of the two things above made this HAPPEN, but I can't get it back. What can I do? I'd be fine with or without the arrows, but just not how it is now!

This happened over a year ago, I do not remember the names of the programs, what I did with the registry, and I cannot use system restore that far. Please help with any solution. I have Windows 7.This may help but also may not be exactly what your looking for.

http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/10945-shortcut-arrow-change.htmlhttp://www.techsupportforum.com/microsoft-support/windows-vista-windows-7-support/503452-solved-icons-desktop-have-missing-file-icon-instead-shortcut-arrow.html#post2837395

The above link solved my problemIf the shortcut arrow is not properly displayed then a generic image appears over the Desktop icon making it almost unrecognisable. How and why this happens is unknown and I found that the numerous registry hacks and other suggested fixes did not help in my case. Alterations through 'View' and icon-size did nothing nor did System Restore or deleting the icon-cache but the fault was eventually overcome quite easily as follows:

Go through Control Panel to Display
Reset the size option to "Medium - 125%" and click "Apply"
Once the computer resets, visually confirm that the shortcut arrow appears correctly
Then go back through the Control Panel again and reset to "Smaller - 100%"
Uhhhhh
This was solved over a Month ago...Solved over a month ago, patio? Perhaps you didn't quite get the message when I mentioned that "the numerous registry hacks and other suggested fixes did not help in my case." The value of outlining alternate ways to resolve a problem is that if one way doesn't work then another might. And if you don't have to fiddle with the registry, control panel or system restore then that too is worth knowing. Isn't that what these help forums are all about?  Quote from: Zlazz on September 09, 2010, 11:36:55 PM

Indeed, and I definitely agree. But look at the link they said solved their problem.

You'll note something interesting about the thread, in that you have also recently posted there. A month after they already solved their problem, and secondly, that the advice you gave isn't that much different operation-wise from the help they got that solved their problem. The only difference is that you've managed to find an alternate way to effect the same changes.

The helper there guides them through the following steps:

1.)fixing the LNK registry entries (to make sure that the shell Link overlay handler is properly installed)
2.)deleting the icon cache (which sort of confirms my suspicion that the system will use a previously stored icon cache on reboot).
3.)Rebooting
4.)
5.) Profit.

Your solution is effectively a ham-fisted way of doing step 2- there is no confirmation that the link overlay handler is properly installed, and changing the size back and forth is pretty much just forcing it to rebuild the system image list and the icon cache. On the other hand, your solution has the advantage of not necessarily requiring a reboot (with the other solutions, a reboot was required in order to force the system image list to be re-created again. It's generally best to perform a reboot, applications have this weird habit of caching away handles to imagelists. Some of them are like scavengers who keep a bunch of imagelist handles in a hidey hole, refusing to accept that they look awful. (some explorer replacement programs do this for some reason).

Does your solution require a REG script?  No, but it also doesn't fix the problems that the reg script they provide are intended to fix (broken/missing Link overlay handlers) so the functionality isn't the same. Your method merely REPLACES the command prompt->delete icon cache->reboot step. CERTAINLY a good alternative that can be given in an active thread but to bump a month old topic (two month-old topics, if you count the other forum) with a ham-fisted way of doing the same solution the Original Poster used isn't about to win you any gold stickers.

Quote from: Zlazz on September 02, 2010, 10:11:47 PM
How and why this happens is unknown

The Overlay image is a normal icon that is drawn over top of the desktop icon- for windows 95, for example, the icon was was still 16x16, 32x32, etc, but only occupied the lower left corner, so, when windows used ImageList_DrawOverlay (or simply drew the icon over top of the icon for the target) it would appear on top. This didn't change a whole lot since, except now it blends in with the target icon using alpha channels.

This problem can only be caused by a few specific circumstances:

The Icon handle to the overlay icon becomes null, points to the wrong index, or another application has literally removed it from the system imagelist. I've seen this before, since some programs have this complex where they suddenly own the system imagelist and put whatever they please in it. This of course makes things rather confused to the system (which, not SURPRISINGLY, actually owned the imagelist, thus the name) when it tries to draw the overlay using the same Image index that it acquired when it first added it. Instead of drawing the overlay icon as it expected, it ends up overlaying some other icon that the rogue program put on the imagelist. This is more or less constrained to very specific conditions and environments- usually each application is now given a handle to a copy of the system imagelist, rather then a handle to the actual imagelist itself, so this is more a problem in the 9x era.

The Icon overlay is drawn using a Shell Icon handler, Which essentially is a plugin used by explorer. Now, explorer plugins like icon handlers aren't just used by explorer- other applications often use SHGetFileInfo() to acquire information about files, including their associated icons. when this function is called, the Shell (to which the function belongs, thus the SH at the beginning) will use the various Icon handlers to try to create the icon. Of course, this particular behaviour can be changed using various SHGFI_* flags. For example, you can force it to have the link overlay, request the Index into the system imagelist Of the shortcut overlay, or specify that the file should be selected. An application can also opt to only go by the file extension (Some icon handlers might open the file to determine the appropriate icon, this flag basically says "give me an icon, and no dilly dallying Mr.Shell".

Clearly, there is a lot that can go wrong here. First, what happens if there are Problems with the COM subsystem? Then, all of a sudden none of the browser extensions, including icon handlers, works. Also, the system imagelist sits in RAM for a very long time (even in copies) and if a naughty shell extension changes it (often by accident) that change will be reflected in the other extensions. (I said that each application gets a different copy of the list, but in this case these are COM Dll's loading in process with explorer so they all get given the same "copy" that explorer gets). So one buggy extension= major problems for all of them. This is sometimes the result of malware, actually, since malware is in general written by lobotomized COBOL programmers in very dark rooms.

The reason your solution of changing the DPI fixes the problem is because when you do so and apply the change, the shell broadcasts WM_SETTINGSCHANGE to all top-level windows. In response to this message, and determining that the default icon size has changed(as a result of the DPI change), it rebuilds it's system Image list to match the new size.

deleting the icon cache doesn't have an effect, because the icon cache being deleted merely means it will be regenerated as icons are requested- the overlay icon is still invalid or missing from the imagelist so the rebuilt icons are still not correct. One would need to reboot after deleting it to have the intended effect.

Registry "hacks" don't work because they either require a reboot or are entirely misguided. The problem is not with the data that was originally loaded but usually with the system imagelist itself, which needs refreshing. a common tactic is to suggest using something that "rebuilds the icon cache" so to speak, which usually ends up being something to the effect of
Code: [Select]SendMessage(Handle, WM_SETTINGCHANGE,SPI_SETNONCLIENTMETRICS, "WindowMetrics");
With the idea being that the shell will detect the change and rebuild the icons. However, it only does so if it detects the icon size has changed- either because of the setting you note changing here (DPI) or because the pixel value in HKCU\Control Panel\Desktop\WindowMetrics in the "Shell Icon Size" value. One tactic is to change this by moving it up one pixel, invoking the program/code that ends up calling sendMessage, and then bumping it down. This rebuilds the system imagelist from scratch using the pixel-more value and then rebuilds it using the standard size. You usually can't just say "rebuild all the icons in the same size" because then the shell says to itself "haha! I already have a nice cache of icons in that size, That was fast!" Despite said cache/system imagelist being incorrect.

These sorts of icon problems, especially relating to the system imagelist, were rather common with Windows 9x. Sometimes you would have word documents with a Photoshop icon or something equally random. the tweakUI "rebuild icon cache" often works, I think it employs something to the effect of "change the size, rebuild, revert the size, rebuild" as I noted, since the icons clearly redraw on the desktop twice during the operation.

Obviously there's no point to my continuing with this site so I'll make this the last time. That I managed to resolve a problem in a few moments that had lasted for many hours by trying a legal technique that hadn't been mentioned by others speaks for itself - hardly deserving a double "ham-fisted" disparagement. There are registry hacks about supposed to solve this but they are always a risk and I found that the ones I tried didn't work anyway nor did the other techniques that others found successful. So not seeking gold stickers but trying to help.

This tells us that there are numerous ways that the matter may be dealt with and it certainly does no harm to try the method I suggested which did work and solved the problem in spite of your condescending and impertinent comments and the load of jargon that followed. So enjoy your plethora of technobabble for many months to come, or in the words of Mae West - maybe you should plant them, they might grow good lillies.

Solve : Multi booting laptop?

Answer»

I have a triple booting laptop (I RUN a computer group for older people, I am old myself) with a Netgear WGR614 Router. The 3 OSes are WinXP, Vista Home Premium and Windows 7 Ultimate. The router has been set up and works OK with Vista and XP but when I try to access it with Win 7 it ASKS for a password which I supply and it is the same password I use with the other systems, yet I get the message that the password is wrong. I have tried setting up a new profile but nothing I do helps.
If you FIND the time please HELP, I would be very grateful.I believe the original Netgear WGR614  Router drivers that come from the CD aren't compatible with Windows 7, depending on router version.

You can check here:
http://kb.netgear.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/11127/kw/Windows%207/r_id/100109

Under 'Windows 7 Status for NETGEAR Routers'

If your using router version 9 or older (should be labeled under the router or on the box) you have to update the drivers from there website, if available.

WGR614v8 (Windows 7 Drivers):
ftp://downloads.netgear.com/files/WGR614v8_CD_230-10379-06v1.5.zip

WGR614v9 (Windows 7 Drivers):
ftp://downloads.netgear.com/files/WGR614v9_230-10609-08v3.6.zip

WGR614v10 (Already compatible)

Also 64bit Operating Systems will not work with older CD Drivers.

See if that helps first.

Solve : Windows updating with Google chrome browser?

Answer»

Does ANYONE know if you can do "Windows Update" through GOOGLE Chrome browser? OjasNo, Windows Update is only for Operating System related updates. To update Google Chrome, hit the wrench, then "About Google Chrome"He means will it run on another browser i believe...
And the answer is no.
Use IE.Or just use the separate standalone Update applet.

The last Version of windows that required IE- or a browser at all- for updates was either windows 98SE or Windows 2000. XP,Vista, and 7 have their own specific programs for managing updates and the downloading and installation of updates.I THOUGHT XP needed IE and ActiveX for updating...Yeah, when I launch windows update on my XP computer, IE opens. Just CHECKED, seems that it only downloads important/critical/security updates. It does so without requiring ActiveX or IE; those are pretty much reserved for the "optional" updates that are (IMO) entirely useless. The funny thing is the ActiveX Control could have easily just been made a standalone executable. They just artificially coupled it to both the site as well as to their browser for- obvious reasons. At least Vista and 7 have the entire thing decoupled. You can get a similar applet for XP (separate, LISTS available updates, etc) here.

Solve : Do shareware programs has better scan quality than printer one's ??

Answer»

I have scanned a FRAGMENT of some newspaper which I'm going to upload online. Unfortunately, the quality of scanned output file is not that good in spite of the best possible scan settings. I used for this my printer Canon Pixma MG5220 with Canon MP Navigator EX software.
My question is: do the other paid programs around (like DeskPDF) do the better scanning job ?At the risk of stating the obvious, it's the scanner that does the scanning, the software plays little or no part in DETERMINING the image quality. What don't you like about the output file? Are we talking about an image file or an OCR'd document?
Right ! I should have been little more precised at this point. I want to scan this to PDF format.

What don't you like about the output file?

It's not CLEAR enough and a little bit blurry. However, still readable.
BTW: I'm very picky about image quality. You could try playing around with it in an image editing program - I have improved scanned BOOK and magazine pages by applying a sharpening filter and also increasing CONTRAST.
