Solve : Possible processor damage??

Answer»

The problem started when I was playing a game. I noticed my tower was getting hot, which is not uncommon but eventually my game froze. I wasn't able to Alt+Tab or Ctr+Alt+Delete out, so I had to hard reset it. It booted fine and was able to LOAD Windows, however within minutes it froze again. After restarting it again, it Posted up, but when it went to load Windows, it hung at a black screen.

I've tried loading with Safe Mode, it would freeze on crcdisk.sys and wouldn't go on past that. I tried using both a Windows Vista disk, and a Vista Recovery Disk, however it would freeze as it was loading the files. My friend and myself tried looking on-line for solutions, and we found a lot of various ways to try. We tried booting with the on-board video card, nothing. We tried using each RAM stick individually, nothing. We tried disabling on-board features in BIOS such as sound, LAN, and the USB controller, nothing.

Then we finally tried reducing the CPU Multiplier in BIOS to the minimum available, 5x at the minimum 200 MHz. We were finally able to load Windows normally. Then we tried increasing the multiplier closer to its default. The highest we could boot from was 10x, however it would still freeze with simply Internet Explorer running. right now i have the side off with a fan blowing into the tower to prevent any overheating, however the computer still locks up randomly with little to no processor strain.

Any ideas / solutions? I would love to be able to boot with normal, or close to normal PARAMETERS and still have a stable OS.

I do not believe a damaged CPU would let you into the BIOS and boot windows. No way to prove that. I have never heard of a damaged CPU that would go as far as booting windows then fail. Except for thermal overload.

Check the thermal compound and heat sink. The heat sink may be askew. That would fit the symptoms you describe. Can you measure the tempos? That should be in the BIOS.I've left my computer on for the past 30 minutes or so, and the CPU temperature is staying between 56 and 60 Celsius. Anything below 80 C is mild and safe.
And it did not shut down or crash. So heat may not be the problem.
But there are two other places where heat matters.
Inside the PSU. If the irt feels hot, it is hot.
The graphics processor on your Video card. Some will force the system to shut down when there is two much heat.
Otherwise, it would be the RAM. Try another RAM set, if you can.
In a few cases, any drive can start an impromptu internal failure that shuts the PSU off. Rare, but is does happen. It will drive you crazy trying to find which drive.
Unplug power and data to both floppy and CD-ROM and see if it runs normally for a day. Quote from: Alacarde666

Geek, I'll be charitable and suppose that your speakwrite didn't hear you properly...

From AMD's website, the specs for that CPU:

Processor       AMD Athlon™ X2
Model           6000+
Max Temps (C)   55-63

Those temps depend on core voltage. The maximum temperature at 1.35V is 55 C and at 1.40V it is 63 C.

http://products.amd.com/pages/desktopcpudetail.aspx?id=34&AspxAutoDetectCookieSupport=1

CPU life and temperature are inversely related – the higher the temperature, the shorter the CPU’s life. About 5 years ago I read that the mean time to catastrophic failure of commercial silicon doubles for every 10 degrees C rise in temp above 70 degrees C. With today's smaller feature sizes, I would maybe put that figure lower which may be why AMD say 55-63. Whatever. I am not a silicon specialist, but I do know it should be your objective to run your system at the lowest possible temperature.

Anyhow, we are not talking about a theoretical lifespan measured in thousands of hours, that CPU is unstable now.

Alacarde666, your CPU is running at its maximum permitted temperature. If that is just when it is idling then that is BAD NEWS. Put any load on it and it is going to get unstable, and if it gets up to 70 or 80 plus consistently it isn't going to last its expected lifetime. It may be faulty, or indeed damaged already, but lets be hopeful and suppose that its cooling system is not working very well. This needs investigation. The usual supects... is the fan operating properly, is the CPU seated properly, is there a proper amount of heatsink compound between the CPU and the heatsink, is the heatsink clogged with dust or fluff, does it have a decent heatsink, is the computer case properly ventilated, are grilles or holes blocked, is it on a carpet, and so on. If that was my cpu I would want to see it idling well below 35 and maybe reaching 40-45 on load. If you do not feel confident to take the steps needed, you need to consult a competent hardware person, this may be a friend or relative or a repair shop with a good reputation.

Geek-9PM, what were you smoking when you wrote that?
Thank you Salmon Trout. Ignore my post. Quote from: Me, above

If that were true we'd all take a blowtorch to our CPUs. I must have been smoking something as well. I meant that the mean time to catastrophic failure halves. That's knocked me off my high horse!

Seriously, I never smoke. I am diabetic and have a sleep disorder. Also I have  asthma and a car that likes to sneak into my bedroom and torment me.

Maximum temperatures for AMD and Intel chops vary widely. AMD says some ships have a maximum of 95 °C and they do't say what will come above that temperature. Stop and catch fire?

But AMD also gives an ambiguous range for one type.

AMD Opteron    65 – 71°C

This is from an indirect source, which may be incorrect. That source also reports that Intel gives variant values for temperature. Most often Intel says 70 °C but for one notebook type it is 100°C which would mean your notebook could also be used to brew a cup of tea.

Indeed. That's why I LOOKED at the actual PUBLISHED AMD specs.

Thermal shutdown, I should think, which is when the CPU's temperature protection kicks in to prevent permanent damage.

Solve : OT camera question?

Answer»

Just got a new camera and I want to put the pics on the computer and then take some to Wal-mart to print copies. When I put them on the computer, does this then erase them from the card, or are they still on there? Also are you better off downloading from the card DIRECT, or using the usb cord?
You can usually 'move' the photos from the card to the computer, which will remove them from the card and place them in a chosen folder on the computer OR you can 'copy' the photos, then the photos will be on both.

The difference between a card reader and usb cable, in my experience, is nothing. They both do the same job.Just one point to keep in mind regarding card reader vs. USB cable. If you copy/move photos to your computer via USB cable and your battery gets too low while this is going on, you have a chance of photo files being destroyed or damaged. Only during a copy from camera to computer. and the damage would be to the copies arriving on the computer, but still, a good point.

I guess this feature is more common on newer cameras.  My camera uses AA batteries. I use rechargeable batteries and have to remove them to recharge them.Mine will only do 1 or the other at a TIME...but i agree wholeheartedly...
Make sure the device is fully charged before transferring files... Quote from: soybean on September 10, 2010, 07:32:13 AM

Ahh, that makes sense. Mine uses some proprietary Lithium-Ion battery of some sort. It only charges through USB, but thankfully unlike my MP3 player it has a AC plug that allows me to charge it through the USB cord.

Personally I usually don't transfer anything through the USB interface- the camera pretty much just shows up as a USB drive anyway, so I'm usually better off just using my USB card reader or the card reader built into my laptop (which I find rather nifty).

If one has an extra drive bay in their desktop, one can also invest in a relatively inexpensive add-on, such as a card reader and INSTALL this...simplifying the process.  One COULD remove their card from their camera and insert it into the card reader.  No need to worry about batteries...period.

Here are just a few at newegg.com: Internal Card ReadersYeah, I'm sure the built-in card readers must be nice.  I don't have any in my computers but could install one in one or both of my desktop systems, as suggested by GlitchPC.  My 3 year old laptop does not have a built-in reader either.

For my xD card, I use an external reader that connects to a USB port.  The card reader is shown here: http://www.shopping.com/xPO-Olympus-Olympus-MAUSB-200-Card-reader-xD-USB.  I bought a similar USB external card reader for my mother to use with a SD or micro SD card.

As you said: " We do not assist with bypassing Copyright safeguards " What happens if my motherboard is broken or CPU is dead ?"

If your motherboard is broken or your CPU is dead you should use the PROPER support channels to get help from the manufacturer. If it's out of the warranty period, you might get some LIMITED help via Microsoft, but I doubt it. Most "new" machines come with OEM installs of windows that will not activate on a different motherboard. This is entirely by design, since When you buy windows and install it on a machine, It's tied forever to that machine. You can't decide to remove it and install it on another. It's really quite a mess from a legal standpoint which is why we don't help with anything remotely related to activation, especially bypassing it.
at that time, my product key is over the number of activation ? what should I do ? Buy a new Account ?
Contact Microsoft. If they cannot help you, then yes. You will need to buy another copy of windows. If the motherboard dies and you have to replace it with another, and the manufacturer refuses to help for any reason, then you cannot legally use that copy of windows on that machine anymore- it's tied to the Motherboard. In fact the entire "you can move windows installations anywhere you want" is a myth based on the misconception that the windows license applies to the person who bought it, when in fact it applies to the machine on which it was first installed.

possible preemptive snarky comment:
"I was asking Patio not you"

if that was truly the case you would have done so via PM.

Thanks for your explaination. The problem is that I bought a DELL computer... then it's dead after one year at the time out of warranty just because the CPU was dead. in this case, I could not replace CPU ... as you know if I replaced CPU... The windows that I re-install ... will not activate online . That's the reason why .. I  would like to ask Patio. Quote from: calpol on September 10, 2010, 09:43:25 PM

Your not going to suddenly CHANGE the rules here just because you have some sob story. Use the 800# for Microsoft activation and explain that you had to replace both the MBoard and CPU....
They will EITHER activate it on the spot or issue you a new key.

First thought is, do you have CAPS lock on???

My 'other' first thought would be that in general a log-in USUALLY offers a way to reset the username and/or password when you provide a piece of INFORMATION that you have already provided, for example an email address. Even routers in general have a reset switch to take things back to the factory settings/password. No password YOU have provided is infallible when it comes to recovery.
Do you have this option available?waiting to SEE how this is fixed it has happen to me win7 yahoo

Solve : accessing my partitioned drive?

Answer»

when i purchased my computer, circuit city apparently partitioned my hard drive. my HD, was 350 GIGS, but they took a 9 gig piece, an placed my recovery stuff on it, instead of giving me a recovery or win vista disk. my main disk is designated C:. the partition is D:. i need to format my C:, but can't, because it says drive is in use. how do i boot up into D:, so that i can format my C:, and then move my recovery stuff from D: to C:Why don't you just perform a recovery OPERATION?
because my recovery cd is on the partitioned part of my hard drive, circuit city never gave me a RESTORE cd or a win cd, when i purchased the computer. i want to totally format C drive and start from scratchDid you try F10 at boot as i suggested ? ? Rule of the thumb: When purchasing or buying a computer, either laptop or desktop, always make sure that a CD installer for OS comes along. Mobo driver, graphics and video card follows.

Quote

What if HD is corrupted and not able to change or reinstate previous system stability?
These CD's are not only handy but are the dependents of your computer.
You cannot format the system partition from within the OS - you need to do it at boot. Quote from: krofts5 on September 06, 2010, 08:01:21 AM
how do i boot up into D:, so that i can format my C:, and then move my recovery stuff from D: to C:

You cannot boot into D: because D: does not contain a bootable operating system. There is only ONE of these on your computer, in the C: partition. Since you cannot format the system disk from within the system, the only way you can do this is by booting into a different operating system that has access to your hard drive. This could be (for example) the Windows Preinstall Environment (Windows PE) which is contained on every Windows install CD. Or there are other bootable CDs you can use. Or you can prepare a pen drive but that it is a bit more difficult. In any case, FORMATTING a disk means to blank it and write a fresh (empty) file system onto it. once you have formatted the C: drive, what are you going to do next? A formatted drive contains nothing... no files, no operating system, nothing, nada, zilch, zip. Or did you think that "format" means "freshly reinstall Windows"? If you did, then performing the system restore operation using the restore partition is going to achieve that. Also, why do you think you want to "move your recovery stuff"?

Quote
D: does not contain a bootable operating system

It would be more accurate to say that D probably contains a bootable installation of FreeDOS which is configured to run (probably) Norton Ghost to restore a factory-fresh partition image onto the C partition.
Obviously he did not attempt F10 as suggested...

He'll be back i predict...

Solve : Auto select?

Answer»

I recently purchased a new laptop (Dell) with Windows 7.  How do I stop the mouse (touchpad) from selecting items by just hovering the cursor over them and without a click?

best,

ScottMouse Properties in Control Paneltried that.  no joy.

is there a "systems options" box someplace that needs to be either selected (or unselected) for something like:  "select on click only"?Windows Explorer Tools->Folder Options, investigate the "click items as follows" frame, make sure "double click to open an item (single click to select)" is  selected.

If it is, then the problem is more the WAY you are using the touchpad- most touchpads allow you to quickly tap the pad to perform a click action. sometimes it can be too sensitive, or, more likely, I've FOUND people who have this problem to be practically hovering over top of the touchpad, rather then solidly touching it (so the touchpad registers a lot of... touches).

For me, if I wanted to disable this on my laptop, I would have to go into Mouse Properties, and CHOOSE a tab CALLED "Device Settings" which is added by the touchpad DRIVER. I would then choose the appropriate item in the "Devices:" listview and select "settings". At this point a new window would appear, containing various options, one of which is "Tapping". Where I can enable or disable that feature. I'm not sure if that is what is the problem in your case but it certainly sounds plausible.

Solve : Windows 7 Ultimate vs. Windows 7 enterprise?

Answer»

What is the difference with the two versions?

I do have a KMS client key but I do not understand how does that differ from windows ultimate?Except for the games in Ultimate, there are no feature DIFFERENCES between Enterprise and Ultimate. Enterprise is simply for Volume License USERS.
Quote from: LeoITT on September 07, 2010, 12:45:19 PM

I do have a KMS client key but I do not understand how does that differ from windows ultimate?

All versions of Windows 7 require product activation. Starting with Windows Vista, for business users, Microsoft Volume Licence Keys (VLKs) have been replaced with Multiple Activation Keys (MAK) or Key MANAGEMENT Server (KMS) keys. MAK Activation may occur independently (by means of connection to Microsoft through internet or telephone activation) or through a proxy using Microsoft's Volume Activation Management Tool (VAMT). Hosts activated via a KMS have to report back to that key server once every 180 days.

Windows 7 Enterprise is a business OS and can only be activated with a Volume License MAK or KMS key if it is not activated against a local KMS server. Enterprise requires a VL KMS/MAK out of the box or activation against a local KMS server. It can be rearmed up to 3 times.

Windows 7 Ultimate Edition is a consumer OS and activates CONVENTIONALLY via the internet to Microsoft activation servers.

C:\Users\\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Sticky Notes\StickyNotes.snt

I would like to change this location to a folder in my desktop.
I.e, I would like that my backup StickyNotes will not be in the %appdata%.

How do I do that?
Is this related to the term 'path'? what is 'path'?

thank

You need to see if there is an OPTION within the app to choose the location of the backup folder. The other option would be to find the Target Folder.....right clik it and select CREATE Shortcut...then DRAG that Shortcut to the Desktop...

Hook up the old drive and FORMATTED the drive and recovered the info and then windows gave me a error that the bootmgr was  missing.  Through dos i was able to rebuild the bootmgr, but now nothing happens again.  Went back to new drive, everything set up and then nothing happens on formatting the new drive. Tried to format drive with dos, but it keep saying i don't have the right drive parameters. Please Help.Do you have your computer set to boot from CD-ROM as the initial boot source?  You need to ACCESS the BIOS settings screens to SEE this setting and change it.

Solve : games keep crashing?

Answer»

so im a heavy gamer,  i have a lot of virtual worlds on my laptop like imvu, eve, and about to get wow but sometimes the games i have run slow and crash a lot so i wonder how can i help them run better??? i have an acer aspire one note book os: w7 starter btwIf you're a heavy gamer I'd recommend buying or BUILDING a gaming PC. Laptops aren't at all meant for "heavy" gaming. Quote from: gaarazgurl on August 28, 2010, 01:50:42 AM

If it has Windows 7 Starter on it, it's probably a Netbook.

Netbooks are meant for checking e-mail, surfing the net, word processing, and other light tasks.  Gaming is not one of them.

As Kpac said, you need to purchase or build a gaming-quality PC.  Netbooks are NEVER gaming-quality, and laptops seldom qualify as "gaming quality" (some can be, but are often in the $2500-$3000 range, and even then have no real room for expansion/upgrading).The only taxing game I see on that list is probably WoW, the others I think are low quality 3D like RUNESCAPE, and will probably run on the Netbook.

The first thing I would do is update the video drivers.

First, click the Windows Button/Start Button.
Second, in the search box, type dxdiag, and press enter.
In the Display tab, you should be able to view the manufacturer of your graphics processor. I'm going to GUESS it's INTEL though, if it's a weaker laptop.
Then just go to their website and obtain the drivers. It's as easy as selecting your product and getting the downloads.t is very frustrating when one is playing a game and it crashes in the mid of it. Here is a list of things that you should also do to fix Warcraft 3 crash in your computer:

- Cool down your PC and do not allow to overheat it.
- Optimize Windows memory
- Avoid Over clocking as Warcraft 3 crashes may be happening due to it.
- Use the suitable graphics drivers to PLAY Warcraft 3 and update those drivers.
- Avoid Alt -Tab usage as much as possible when you are playing the game.
- Clean the dirt inside your computer or laptop as it may be causing
Analyze your RAM using the Microsoft RAM test.

The above guideline allow you to fix World of Warcraft 3 crash. Quote from: kpac on August 28, 2010, 04:19:47 AM

Solve : Buy another OS I supppose, according to MSoft no longer supports Vista key codes?

Answer»

My HP laptop was purchased used from a used PC dealer in West Memphis AR last fall. It had XP professional installed (wiped clean), (I have no key code)  but the sticker on the bottom of the machine shows it to have come from the HP factory with Vista Buisness (which I have the key code for). I have no Vista Buisness CD for this key code. So I tried loading Vista X64 bought by me (with code) but that oS purchase was for (system builders) installable on one machine only. I ALREADY have this same Vita X64 installed on my self built PC. So it will not activate with windows without purchase of another Vista HOME premium key code bought for this paerticular machine.

#1 Is there a way to recover the Vista buisness OS with the original factory OS for the machine (with proper key code). I'm asking because I want to run Win 7 X64 on this unit, but it looks like an upgrade from Vista bu
uisness would be less expensive than  full install'
But I need the proper Vista buisness OS intact in order to do so.
What next?
Thanks,
Mike

Long story short: If I can get Windows to acceprt the key code for Vista buisness for this machine, I 'd like to upgrade to Win 7 buisness? Cant do it with Vista home premuim other that a purchasisng a full version $$$. Furthermore, I'd like to run X64 BASED OS with Win &.
Whats my best move at this point?

Thanks everybody!
Mike
I'm looking at this Win 7 x64  1 install only
but I swap hard drives and other hardware often. I don't want to be constrained by 1 install only.'What to choose?
OR
You can see the Microsorst Wiondows optional OS page here
What should I do, with limited funs for thisdownload the appropriate recovery disc from the HP site.Ok, I'll do so later. Got to go to work right now.
I'll post back later.
Thanks BC!I can't find it on the HP site, this screen.
I accessed HP online chat and they said I need to call 1-800-...... EST during buisness hours. But I'm working 7am-6pm CST weekdays so I don't know what to do next.
I guess I could buy a new copy of Win 7 but I really can't afford it right now and I'd kinda like to keep Vista because it's what I'm familiar with.

Been here yet?

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c00810334&cc=us&dlc=en&lc=en&jumpid=reg_R1002_USENOkay jj. I'm on it. I may have to get some sleep so I can go to work in the morning but I'm still here for as long as possible.
The first option listed is restart/F11/recovery manager. I'll try that although this PC has had XP pro installed over the original Vista business, then Vista X64. But maybe the info is there. I'll try. Be back in a few minutes. I see no "Recovery Media" option for Vista Business, 32 or 64 bit, nor for Vista HM Prem 64 bit. I tried 4 other options listed on this page but no joy. Sorry, but I must be missing it somehow?  This part:

If you cannot create a set of recovery discs, you might be able to order a set of replacement discs from HP. HP maintains an inventory of replacement recovery discs for several years after the product has been released.

and this:

HP allows you to purchase one copy of a replacement recovery disc at minimal cost (all you pay for is the cost of the media, shipping, and handling). To place an order, you will need the product number, the serial number, the type of processor, the name of the Windows OS that came installed on the PC, and your credit card information.

That's what I'd like but I can't get to the ordering screen.

I have all the info, machine P/N -S/N - AMD processor type and original operating system product key and a credit card ready. I just can't find the form to enter the information to order. I've got to get a couple hours sleep jj. I'll check back tomorrow night.
Thanks again!!!I called the 3rd shift at work and they said everything is running fine, and I'm due some days off, so I'm back. I'd now be able to contact HP support but I suspect you already have given me a solution (or will). I just am not accessing something-somewhere. Sorry for my PC software ignorance here jj & bc. I'm BETTER at hardware type situations. (give me grease or an anti-static situation)
I did find something of interest within the specs given at this link for HP 6715b and was wondering if this will be a factor recovering/re-purchashing... my OS originally installed on this machine.

Genuine Windows Vista® Business downgrade to Genuine Windows® XP Professional
As stated in my first post, I bought this laptop used, and assumed XP Pro had been installed over Vista Business (since Vista Business product key sticker is attached), but does the info in the HP page (linked) suggest I may have had the original OS installed from the start?

I was under the impression that installing an earlier version of Windows OS over a more current version was dis-allowed?
Done.  Just got off the phone with HP customer support.
Recovery CD of OS, which was originally installed on this machine, is now being shipped to me:

  Description : Notebook 6515b,6715b,6715s, VISTA BUS 32 & 64 Bit
    Unit Price : $10.00
    Quantity : 1
    Product Amount:     $10.00
    Shipping/Handling:  $0.00
    Sales Taxes:            $0.70
    Order Total:            $10.70

The only information they nedded was product S/N & credit card info. I'm impressed with the HP customer service system and I'm also glad I've got you guru's on this board to guide me once again.
Thanks JJ 3000 and BC_Programmer!!!I recieved the Vista Business x32 & x64 disc from HP and have Vista Business X64 up and running fine. And with all kinds of additional security features, including my notebooks fingerprint scanner, (the only feature not functional when I was running Vista Home Prem X64)(OS originally not offered with this 6715b pc).
Long story short - I'm a happy camper! Thanks again guys!

Solve : vista vs illegal windows 7 os?

Answer»
Hi,
my friend has her first laptop, first computer,
the laptop had a major worm & virus problem when she got it,

it has an "illegal" version of windows 7 on it,
she doesn't want to buy a new OS,

the vista product key is still readable underneath,

we do not know where the original vista OS was loaded,

is it acceptable & moral to copy another (my) vista OS + use her original product key?

it would get her up and running,
she could decide to upgrade later,

is windows 7 that much better?

would a beginner be better off?

please guide us

THANKS for being here

Borrow a Vista CD to install the OS using her validation.
NOTE: The versions have to match exactly.
ALSO it should be an MS Vista CD...not OEM such as Dell Acer etc.

This is perfectly legal to do so...
Don't forget the Updates. This post is running very close to a line that CH members cannot cross. Which is advocating or promoting any activities which are illegal. Therefore "it has an "illegal" version of windows 7 on it,
she doesn't want to buy a new OS, is not a subject we can address. This statement MAY provide some solution "the vista product key is still readable underneath,". You can try contacting Microsoft and telling them that the original installed version of Vista no longer functions and that you do not have the O/S disc (very common to be so) nor do you have any recovery discs. By supplying the product key you may be able to have them provide you with disc for the O/S (it won't be free--but it will be nominal as opposed to buying the software retail).
"is it acceptable & moral to copy another (my) vista OS + use her original product key?" Generally speaking an O/S supplied with a computer (discs) in this case yours are specific to a particular computer(yours in this case) and while you MAY be able to install it when it goes to touchy feely with Microsoft --which it will do at some point you may lose the use of the computer it is installed on (hers). No matter which way you go you may encounter problems which will necessitate the purchase of a legitimate Windows O/S.
There is however an alternative to this and that is install a free version of Ubuntu  or there is another company that also has a free O/S available (it escapes me as to who it is). Others may know the name. I think Chrome also has one. truenorthThe first thing I'd do is look to see whether that computer has a recovery partition on it.  If the original recovery partition is still intact, try using it to reinstall the OEM version of Vista that was on the machine when it was new.

Another option in this situation is to contact the manufacturer and request a recovery disc from them.  They may be able to and willing to send one for a small fee.  Using an official MS CD to re-install the OS on a liscensed machine is perfectly Legal and covered in MS's EULA agreement...Agreed--my concern is that it is a disc supplied by his computer manufacturer an NOT a Microsoft disc. truenorth Quote from: patio on February 21, 2011, 08:22:32 AM

Right, I AGREE with that.  Still, if the recovery partition can be used, it would have the device drivers and be an easy way to get the system up and running. Probably isn't...that's why i mentioned it... Quote from: soybean on February 21, 2011, 08:39:04 AM

Good point also Soybean.
We may never know....Thanks for the response so far,

just to clarify

'it has an "illegal" version of windows 7 on it,
she doesn't want to buy a new OS,'

the 'illegal' version 'expires in 20 days'

i am not intending to endorse illegal actions

both machines have OEM versions
also i think we might have a disc available from another friend to reinstall vista
but would that be compatible with OEM

thanks again

Have you done this?  Do you know what to look for?I haven't looked for a recovery partition
this is mostly because I do not know, where / how to

but i did forget a little too
possibly because i do not know where / how

I would like directions / or a guide
perhaps just breadcrumbs

Thanks for responses
Travel to the manuf. site....they will have step by step directions...
It's different for most manuf.i've read that F10 at start up should begin the recovery process,

does that sound right for this need?

we do not have any recovery discs,

part of instruction suggests making a recovery disc,

does that mean it will still be windows7?

thanks again
No...
It will be the original installed OS which ACCORDING to what you've told us was Vista...

Follow the instructions and move forward...

Solve : Will windows 7 stop blue screens and enviroment errors??

Answer»

Hey, i currently have a Dell Inspiron 531, the Athlon X2 version, and it runs on Vista, however I want to upgrade to 7 just so i have an upgraded home network. My 531 always crashes with constant blue screens, and when i try to run certain software, it says environment error, will Windows 7 fix this, basically I'm asking if it it's worth it to buy it to fix my problem? btw I have ALREADY tried to restore it to factory default and i get environment error, and it's not currently connected to the internet, and when i tried to connect it, it doesn't work, maybe Windows 7 will fix that? What is new or different since the last time everything worked properly (ie, new hw, new sw, virus, error, etc)?

Download BlueScreenView:

Solve : Clean Installation not helping!??

Answer»

I recently got a new HD, as mine was toast. I reinstalled Vista and the COMPUTER was running fine until I had to shut it down or put it to sleep (properly). It would give me the "windows was improperly shut down" error as well as a few system and registry errors until finally loading.

After a few days though, the repair option on my Vista DVD couldn't FIX the problems, and I couldn't load the OS at all due to a "corrupt registry." I clean installed and right off the bat the computer was slow and LAGGING, and I started getting more registry errors... now it's back to unuseable.

Why didn't the clean install fix anything? Is it even worth trying again?
I have antivirus programs (the first thing I did) and registry cleaners and I did a C DRIVE scan.. they all found and fixed a bunch of problems... but still the computer just kept spiralling downwards. I don't know what to do next. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.1) Registry cleaners CAUSE problems, they do not fix them. NEVER use a registry cleaner
2) Exactly how did you do the clean install (step by step)?
3) You said you have "antivirus programs" - how many?

Solve : keyboard disabled?

Answer» HI,  I need help.  I'm using WINDOWS7,  on a Samsung netbook N210.   Recently had a technician clean it up after a hacker got into the system.   The tech added Avast anti-virus and  Malwarebytes.   I sometimes add a favorite old external IBM keyboard to the netbook, as it's a little faster.   It was just fine before.   Now it  (the keyboard) has a yellow light that says it's in stand-by.   I tried shutting down and starting up again.   At one point a box popped up and SAID  it wasn't recognized.   I'd never had that HAPPEN before, and   I never even noticed it had a standby button.    I can't get it operational again, and I can't get in touch with the guy who WORKED on it.   Does anyone have any idea how I can get it out of standby ?   Thanks!Power down and disconnect it...
Then do 2 or 3 cold boots without it connected...
Then power down again and re-connect it...
Power up...does it do the same thing ? ?Thank you for the reply.  I'll try that.   Sorry, I'm really new here,  kind of lost.    I need to correct my 'beginner status' ... I'm no expert and never will be ... but  I'm somewhere close to the middle.

Thanks again;  I'll let you know.

Once it gets passed the boot options it goes to a BLACK screen with the options of either starting windows normally or startup repair (and I haven't even touched anything hardware specific, just to clarify). I'll let the startup repair sit and when finished it TELLS me that it can't fix whatever the problem is. I've tried GOING into safemode as well but even that starts loading and eventually just switches over to that frusterating black screen again. I was thinking maybe a recovery disc MIGHT help but I'm not sure...Can SOMEONE please help me?

Solve : I don't have a hosts file??

Answer»

Hey guys, i was recently trying to find my hosts file for a little "editing" but i cant find it for some odd reason. I don't know i've tried google and youtube but nothing comes up, and i've also tried accessing the file through Notepad but nothing seems to work :/ This is what i get when i follow this path : "C:\Windows\System32\drivers"

Any suggestions?"hosts" file is located in C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc folder.Yeah i don't even have a "etc" folder as a matter a fact.
I just don't know whats wrong...  Quote from: Dante__ on September 04, 2010, 10:01:29 PM

It's a HIDDEN folder.I don't believe, it is hidden. It doesn't say anything about being hidden in "Properties".The HOSTS file is a hidden file. Even if it does go missing the next time you start the computer it will be re-created because it's also a Protected File.

About Windows File Protection

WFP protects system files by running in the background and detecting attempts to replace protected system files. WFP is triggered after it receives a directory change NOTIFICATION on a file in a protected directory. Once this notification is received, WFP determines which file was changed. If the file is protected, WFP looks up the file signature in a catalog file to determine if the new file is the correct Microsoft version. If it is not, the operating system replaces the file with the correct version from the dllcache directory or the distribution media.

Now, open registry editor, go here:
HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters
and see if you have following entry in right pane:
DataBasePath
If you do, it's value should read:
%SystemRoot%\System32\drivers\etcYeah it says that...Please DOWNLOAD SystemLook from one of the links below and save it to your Desktop.

Solve : Dual partition naming convention?

Answer»

I have two Vista partitions. The OS selection screen shows both as "Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium".

Is there a way to rename these to more easily IDENTIFY which partition is which?I found the partition NAME in boot.ini

vista does not have boot.ini, I thought.
You're correct.

At the TIME I was troubleshooting, I was at work on an XP machine and totally forgot about vista not having boot.ini - I eventually just downloaded EASYBCD. Worked like a charm!

Solve : Help setting up RAID?

Answer»

I have a SSD I am using for my OS. I also have two 1 TB Western DIGITAL drives I want to USE for storage of files. I need some guidance on the proper steps to get the drives up and running. They are brand NEW and already INSTALLED in the computer, but not initialized yet. Do they need to be initialized first and then formatted? Is formatting part of the initializing process? Or, are they separate steps? Then, do I just go into the BIOS on boot up and fix the appropriate settings to configure my RAID array?

Thnaks for any help.

Solve : show windows 7 build number for all users??

Answer»

When I go to HKCU\ControlPanel\Desktop and change PaintDesktopVersion to 1 it shows build number only to one user.
But I want to it SHOW that to all users and when I create new user.

How to do that think? You asked this using identical wording as Milan777 on MSFN three days ago. Did you TRY the suggested method?

Quote

You need to edit the default user hive. Set explorer to show hidden and PROTECTED operating system files. Open regedit and highlight HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE. Click File, Load Hive... and browse to C:\Users\Default User\NTUSER.DAT. GIVE it a name. Now go to this new area that you named under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE and edit <name you gave it>\Control Panel\Desktop. Then simply highlight the loaded hive and click file, unload hive.

Solve : Please help with my internet connection issue I can't find an answer!!!?

Answer»

I've searched for an answer to this question all over, but I can't find anything that works.

I hadn't used my Dell XPS 420 desktop for a while because I broke my keyboard.  Today I got a new wireless keyboard in and started up my computer.  I connected to the internet fine (my apartment has ethernet and wireless that works but I was using the ethernet connection).

While using the internet, my Kaspersky antivirus program started detecting threats and actually got shut down.  When I tried to start up Kaspersky again it said it got corrupted and would not start.  Eventually it started and updated again but things didn't seem right.  I decided to install Avast antivirus and run a full system scan to make sure I wasn't infected.  I like Avast and it TURNED up no threats to my computer.

This is where the big problem started happening.  Even though my desktop is connected to the internet (this problem applies to both the ethernet and the wireless connection) and my networks and sharing center says it's connected, when I attempt to open up a browser like firefox or internet explorer to use the internet, no websites will load.  However, antivirus PROGRAMS can update and windows can update, so it MUST be connected.

I have tried turning off proxy settings... and I can't get my computer to start in safe mode, and it seems to take a considerably larger amount of time to start up the computer since this problem happened.

I need to get my browsers to work again!

Please help! I have no CLUE where to turn now

Thank You,
Cory Quote

Yes, it matters.  See http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-vista/32-bit-and-64-bit-Windows-frequently-asked-questions for info. for one: 32 bit windows can't be upgraded to 64 bit windows. You'll need to do a clean (non-upgrading) installation if you want to get 64 bit windows on your computer.thanks for all your replies , i understand a bit more now however ,allan ,  how do i rename it to

1. Follow the INSTRUCTIONS from this link ...., tells you how to rename a file's extensions so you can change your.img to .iso.

2. try rebooting your pc to your newly burnt cd and see if it bootup to the cd normally and GOES straight to the setup and its instructions for you.

right-click on the file and rename.
Then burn it to cd using an iso burner (http://www.petri.co.il/how_to_write_iso_files_to_cd.htm)

Solve : A Mouse Connection Issue?

Answer»

I've recently bought a new computer, which runs fine except for the tendency to occasionally beep.

The sound belongs to the "device connected/disconnected" function. At first it occurred only once every two days or so, then slowly increased in frequency, today it happened for THREE minutes straight. As long as the sounds runs, the MOUSE is unresponsive. Later I got a tablet + PEN, which is UNAFFECTED by it, so I'm guessing it has something to do with the mouse connection (Logitech brand).

I would like some advice on finding out what causes this and what to do about it.

Running Windows 7, 4 GB RAM, Intel Core, and I'm not sure about the other technical aspects.Since it's a new computer, I'm guessing it's a USB mouse.  Check device manger to see if it has a problem with the mouse.  Also, have you tried a different USB port?  Do you have a different mouse you can try?If you are using a USB mouse, you might also want to try a different device in those ports, just to make sure that the ports aren't fried.

-- Ryan
Windows Outreach TeamYes, it's a USB mouse. According to Device Manager, the mouse works as it should. I've tried it on two different ports. I don't have a different USB mouse, but do have the old mouse that connects to the keyboard (the left button is broken, but otherwise it works), with which the issue does not occur.

I don't have any other USB devices save for my digital camera, which doesn't stay connected long enough for me to see whether it also has an issue. Quote

Expand USB controllers and right-click on all USB Root Hubs, Properties, Power tab and look for the Attached device which is mouse(if its present) or other devices together with it(webcam) and Power required description. Does it shows any figures? Also under Power management tab where the mouse is located under these root hubs, uncheck "Allow the computer to turn of this device to save power", click OK. It shows 98mA BEHIND the mouse and 0mA at the subset of "portals available".

Done.

Also, I forgot in the last post, the tablet does have an USB connection that is perpetually connected, and doesn't have this issue.

Solve : How do I use both earphones and speakers on a desktop computer??

Answer»

I am trying to install Dragon Naturally Speaking(dictation software) on my computer  - which is a state of the art desk top running windows 7. The problem is straightforward: I already have external desktop speakers for music and videos. Dragon Naturally Speaking is a dictation system that requires a headset with microphone and earphones. When I plug in the headset, it preempts my desktop speakers whether or not the Dragon software is turned on or off. The vendor of Dragon says the only way to hear my external speakers is to unplug the headset whenever I want to listen to the speakers. Given the location and configuration of the desktop, this is inconvenient in the extreme. Anybody know of a software or wiring solution? My laptop has SEPARATE plugs for MIC and EAR.
I have no problem using both speakers and MIC at the same TIME. Just do not plug in the EAR plug. Just use MIC.Obviously the above post does not answer your question. To the best of my knowledge there is no way around your problem. What kind of headset and speakers are you using?  How do either connect to your PC?  Are they usb connected or via 3.5 mm audio jack?Get a Y adapter with 1 male jack plug and 2 outlets and plug the adapter into the speaker socket then plug both the headset and the speakers into the adapter. This is what I have done.

And you can use the mike and headset while the speakers are STILL active? That's surprising to me. My headset has separate mike and headphone jacksAhhhif he has a headset with just one jack which serves both the headphones and the mike then he can't do that - maybe he will clarify?

Solve : Odd Windows 7 64-bit issue?

Answer»

I have a laptop running Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit. After the latest spate of Windows updates (but before I installed service pack 1), I started having an odd problem.

On initial boot up, everything runs fine. But at some point, PROGRAMS stop loading altogether. I always run into the problem when I try to launch any Office 2010 program, Office, Excel, Word.

The program won't launch or the SPREADSHEET or document I'm trying to load won't open. At that point, I find other programs won't load as well. I have to go into task MANAGER and kill all of the processes where Excel or Word is trying to open a document.

When I open Windows Explorer, the magnifying glass is spinning over all of the Libraries folders as if it can no longer find the files and folders. That would suggest to me that it may be related to the user profile.

It clears up when I reboot the system.

It started when the pre-service pack 1 updates were installed. Several updates came out on the same day ALONG with service pack 1. Maybe someone else has experienced a similar issue or knows of an issue with one of the updates?

I need help with this.. I now know after a couple days of searching and running tests this is what is wrong with my pc. The only THING is I cant delete it. Ive tried changing permissions, owners, etc..  if someone can please help me on how to delete it.. it would be appreciated...and why do you need to remove it?
That entry is a part of Daemon Tools.because i recently deleted daemon tools from my computerOK...and why does that registry entry bother you?i didnt know what it was and its ACCESS was prohibited but now that i know what its for im not too worried about it. but my pc has been runnin slow lately and ive RUN all kinds of scans i have avast internet security mbam free edition.. and ccleaner. ive run avasts boot time scan, mbams scan, ccleaner registry tool, housecall, like i said ive run a lot of scans too many to name all of them but i cant get my pc back to form. Quote

ccleaner registry tool
Running tools like that may be a part of your problem.

Registry cleaners/optimizers are not recommended for several reasons:

  • Registry cleaners are extremely powerful applications that can damage the registry by using aggressive cleaning routines and cause your computer to become unbootable.

The Windows registry is a central repository (database) for storing configuration data, user settings and machine-dependent settings, and options for the operating system. It contains information and settings for all hardware, software, users, and preferences. Whenever a user makes changes to settings, file associations, system policies, or installed software, the changes are reflected and stored in this repository. The registry is a crucial component because it is where Windows "remembers" all this information, how it works together, how Windows boots the system and what files it uses when it does. The registry is also a vulnerable subsystem, in that relatively small changes done incorrectly can render the system inoperable. For a more detailed explanation, read Understanding The Registry.

  • Not all registry cleaners are created equal. There are a number of them available but they do not all work entirely the same way. Each vendor uses different criteria as to what constitutes a "bad entry". One cleaner may find entries on your system that will not cause problems when removed, another may not find the same entries, and still another may want to remove entries required for a program to work.

  • Not all registry cleaners create a backup of the registry before making changes.  If the changes prevent the system from booting up, then there is no backup available to restore it in order to regain functionality. A backup of the registry is essential BEFORE making any changes to the registry.

  • Improperly removing registry entries can hamper malware disinfection and make the removal process more difficult if your computer becomes infected. For example, removing malware related registry entries before the infection is properly identified can contribute to system instability and even make the malware undetectable to removal tools.

  • The usefulness of cleaning the registry is highly overrated and can be dangerous. In most cases, using a cleaner to remove obsolete, invalid, and erroneous entries does not affect system performance but it can result in "unpredictable results".
Unless you have a particular problem that requires a registry edit to correct it, I would suggest you leave the registry alone. Using registry cleaning tools unnecessarily or incorrectly could lead to disastrous effects on your operating system such as preventing it from ever starting again. For routine use, the benefits to your computer are negligible while the potential risks are great.

If so, download and run couple of tools for me.
NOTE! Start one of your games and THEN run both tools listed below.

Download Process Explorer: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896653.aspx
Unzip ProcessExplorer.zip, and double click on procexp.exe to run the program.
Click on View > Select Colunms.
In addition to already pre-selected options, make sure, the Command Line is selected, and press OK.
Go File>Save As, and save the report as Procexp.txt.
Attach the file to your next reply.

System Idle Process (CPU NOT used) is listed at 47.78%
Your game, DW6_WIN.exe (Dynasty Warriors 6) is using 25.64%
Possibly normal, but there is another process eating up your resources:
wmpnetwk.exe (Windows Media Player Network Sharing Service) eating up 24.47% of your CPU cycles.
I doubt you need that service in order to play your game.

Go Start and in "Start search" type in:
services.msc
Press Enter.

Services window will open.
Find Windows Media Player Network Sharing Service.
Right click on it, click "Properties" and under "Startup type" change it to "Manual".
Restart computer, start your game and post new Process Explorer log.
On a top of it, you seem to be overheating.
Max temperature for your CPU is listed at 62C (http://www.cpu-world.com/CPUs/K10/AMD-Phenom%20II%20X4%20955%20-%20HDX955FBK4DGI.html) and you're exceeding it!

No games until the issue is solved.
You can cause a serious damage to your processor.
How old is this computer?
When was the last time, you cleaned inside the case with a can of compressed air and checked, if all fans are running?

Solve : win7 Libraries help?

Answer»

In win xp My Documents was on the desktop and in it was My Photos  My Music  and so on.

And you could save the whole File of anything in it.

Am I RIGHT that in win 7 Libraries you can still find  My Documents  but it is just for storing Shortcuts to the Files you want?Yes.technically, the Windows 7 "libraries" amount to NOTHING more then aliasses to saved searches that search for a specific folder attribute that indicates that folder is PART of a library.

Or something. I FORGET the specifics.

Solve : Windows Firewall Question?

Answer»

Hi all.  I have a question REGARDING WINDOWS Firewall for Vista.

I know that 10.* ADDRESS are TECHNICALLY not accessible over the internet, but of course, not everyone plays by the rules, so there could be a possibility of a site with illegal content that someone is publicly hosting on a 10.*.*.* address.

I want to configure my firewall to block access to all addresses, except for accessing 10.* addresses when CONNECTED to a specific VPN of a host, let's say it is host A.B.C.D.

This way, I can only access 10.* addresses while connected to my VPN which I am connecting to.  Thus, I can only connect to 10.* address only when I am connected to a VPN of host A.B.C.D.

Please let me know if this is possible, and how to do this.  Thanks in advance.

Solve : Can't start any program on Win7. Starting circle-icon appears for 2 seconds...?

Answer»

Almost no program can start on Windows7 (only succeeded to run notepad and explorer but no IE, chrome, etc.)

Tried numerous registry fixes (assumed wrong extension files associations) - didn't help.

Any idea? You should start backing-up your files first and try going to safemode if you can workaround this problem. Free Registry Repairs on certain links or sites are not recommended to any type of computer software issue. What is new or different since the last time everything worked properly (ie, new hw, new sw, virus, error, etc)?it's a kids' machine so theoretically they MIGHT installed something but no hardware or complex stuff. working in the normal mode reveals instability since after a while a blue screen comes - no symptoms, just happens. Download BlueScreenView:
http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/blue_screen_view.html
unzip DOWNLOADED file and double click on BlueScreenView.exe to run the program.
when scanning is done, go to EDIT - Select All
Go to FILE - SAVE Selected Items, and save the REPORT as BSOD.txt
Open BSOD.txt in Notepad, COPY all of the content, and PASTE it into your next reply

Solve : Locating my Network Card Address in the registry.?

Answer»

Hi.

To the left one of those 4-digit numbers is where I'm going to find my NetworkAddress key value for my network card.  I'm unsure what the 4-digit number of my network card is HOWEVER.  How can I find the 4-digit number of my network card?I've found the registry difficult to use.

Under Windows Vista, I'd try this method instead to see if it could locate the needed values:

Click on a symbol usually at the bottom left of the screen - usually either a Start button or a circular Windows symbol.

On the Start Search line, type Device Manager.  When the Programs list above that becomes just one item with that name, click on it.

That PROGRAM may need your approval to start at all; if so, approve it.

Click on the + SIGN before Network adapters to see a list of network adapters on your computer.  I have just one, so that is the obvious choice of what to double-click on next.  Click on Resources to see the memory ranges and IRQS it uses, or various other tabs to see if they will give you some other value you
want.
The registry is never going to have the info you need from the network card...this is by design...Ipconfig/all will give you the INFORMATION you need.
