Solve : Does installing XP on my HP Mini can make it faster??

Answer»

Hi Friends,

I have HP Mini 110. I bought it just one month ago. It has windows 7 starter in its package. But I feel its very slower than my earlier Toshiba L455, that has a celeron CPU and windows 7 home edition.

Please tell me, does installing windows XP on my HP Mini 110 can make a noticeable difference in its speed or not?

Thanks in advance for your help.It probably does not have XP drivers available so i would check into that 1st before considering switching...Moreover, if it shipped with W7 then it should work fine. What exactly "feels slower"?Allan,

Typical programs like Microsoft Word, Excel opens up very slowly. Also, when I resume it from hibernate mood, it takes too much time to work normally, though it has 1GB DDR3. It had Microsoft Office Starter 2010 in the package, and it was extremely SLOW. I uninstalled it and installed Office 2007. It is working much better now.

But generally, the PC is still slower. Is it because of Intel ATOM? And does installing XP can help games run smoothly?I'd expect Windows 7 COMPUTERS with only 1 GB memory to be rather slow for many programs.  You might want to check with HP and Crucial to see it can HOLD more memory to make it run faster.

Note, however, that if you have a 32-bit version of Windows 7 instead of a 64-bit version, installing more than 4 GB of memory is useless - 32-bit versions of Windows have a limit on how much they can use, always below 4 GB and often around 3.5 GB.  Hard drives are accessed differently; this limit does not apply to them. This is humor...right ? ?

Solve : Invalid Installation?

Answer»

Bought Windows 7 from a repair person. Started getting messages that it was not a legat install.  He SAID he COULD fix it in 15 min, I moved out of state.  Another repair person, in new state gave me info that says COA code pulled from registry was for a Dell OEM install (I have a Toshiba) and MS has blocked the code.  Original installer is ignoring my calls and letters.  What do I do?

Very frustrated

I paid for a valid copy of 7 at the SECOND repair place.  How can MS help me get my $$ back from the 1st guy?If you bought a car from a guy that turned out to be stolen, would you ask Ford for your money back? You can report the guy to Microsoft as a pirate, but I doubt they'll help you chase him for the money you paid.

Solve : New Windows 7 install, having a couple of problems (wireless and mouse)?

Answer»

OK, so I decided to take the plunge and upgrade to Windows 7 (32 bit), but due to some issues I've had in the past, I was hesitant to upgrade my main machine and instead did my kid's older computer first.  I was able to complete the install fine, but afterwards a few problems have arisen...

1.  The mouse they were using (older style ps/2) does not work.  Does Win7 not recognize these?  Not a huge problem, as the usb mouse from my PC does work on it, so I'll just need to pick up a new one for their computer if need be.

2.  I cannot get the wireless card to work.  I'm using a Linksys WMP54G and the green power light on the back of the PC where the card is installed won't come on.  It worked fine prior to the Win7 install.  I tried installing the Linksys Wireless G software, and it gets to the point where it tells me to turn off the PC and install the card, and then restart it.  The card is already installed, so I power the PC back on and nothing.  No power light and the software install doesn't restart as it said it would.  So I think the problem is that the card was already installed, so I power down, REMOVE it, power back on and then try the install again.  Once again it tells me to power down and install the card.  Nothing again.

Any suggestions?Your frustration is understandable. Most of the time Windows 7 will install quite easily. As yo have found out, sometimes you have to start with the minimal hardware profile and then go from there.
As they say in the movies, cut to the chase.(Trying to fiddle around with your current installation is just going to consume your time and energy.)  So, let's cut to the chase.
Just go by herself a low-cost USB wireless adapter. Plug it in, install it, problem solved.Yeah, that fixes the mouse issue, and that's fine, because it doesn't hurt to have a new one anyway, but what about the wireless adaptor problem? Quote from: roccenstein on April 11, 2011, 10:24:22 AM

Yeah, that fixes the mouse issue, and that's fine, because it doesn't hurt to have a new one anyway, but what about the wireless adaptor problem?
I would be willing to be it will not happen again.
And no, it is not your fault. It is just ...
the innate perversity of inanimate objects. (references upon request.)
Well, I've tried it three times now and having the same problem.  The card will not power on. Quote from: roccenstein on April 11, 2011, 12:31:01 PM
Well, I've tried it three times now and having the same problem.  The card will not power on.
OK, you got me on that one. But I would have tried five times with at least two different methods. Or just figure that Windows 7 can not do a correct install for that card.

For what it's worth. On of the methods to to find another hard drive in my spares box. wipe it clean, stick it in the test PC and prepare the drive for Windows 7. Then reboot without any extra hardware, install Windows 7 on the clean spare drive by itself. Reboot as needed, connect by Ethernet, get updates, reboot  as needed. Then after networking is established, power down, stick in trouble card and reboot to see have Windows does it this time.

This procedure may take  longer that player with register entries. But from my training they told me it has to be done this way. It is called 'duplicating an issue under controlled conditions.' Going back and trying to adjust something following  a bad installation violates that principal.

BTW, in the laboratory they would NEVER let you take a 'shortcut' by trying to use any media over again for a critical test. Unless the media itself was the object of the test. We had to be sure the media did not have any software remnants,  even in the boot sectors or file location table. Sounds draconian, but that is how it awns done. I am retired now, but I still have my old HABITS learned of many years of failure and success
Does the card show up in Device Manager?OK, weird....  I finally got the computer hooked up to my router with an ethernet CABLE and downloaded all sorts of updates (through Windows Update) and now the wireless card is on and detecting my wi-fi.  Oh well, don't look a gift horse in the mouth, as they say...

You can do a full SEARCH on your machine for the DLL and once you find it, if you have it, then register it to your system.

Solve : Migrating roaming profile user settings from XP to Win7?

Answer»

Hello all

I'm in a Server 2003 SBS environment, and we USE roaming profiles extensively. We have 70+ users, and we are making the conversion from XP to WINDOWS 7 on all of our workstations. All of the users need to be able to use their profiles in windows 7.

The problem is that the user settings don't transfer properly (for example, OUTLOOK e-mail account settings). I have implemented folder redirection, which works but doesn't solve this part of the issue. Additionally, the USMT (user-state migration tool) is not really the ideal option as it is suited best for transfering LOCAL user accounts. All of these roaming profiles are (obviously) stored in a single server location.

How do I go about converting these profiles so that Windows 7 will keep all of their settings?

Thanks,
-Darryl

Solve : emailing?

Answer»

In windows live. I have my contact list from connecting to facebook. When sending a email, I click on the "To" button to call up my contact list, only a part of my contact list pops up. But when I click on my contact list LINK, everybody is there.did you try to start typing the persons name or e-mail? usually they will just pop up then with the rest of the name or address Quote from: leonardharrietha on April 12, 2011, 07:21:32 AM

I have my contact list from connecting to facebook.
You don't put email addresses in facebook; you COMMUNICATE with facebook friends through facebook.  So, exactly what is Windows Live supposed to import from facebook?  I tried "connecting" to facebook from my little USED Windows Live email account and no entries got added to Windows Live contacts.  And, again, why would they, since we don't use email addresses in facebook, other than adding our own address so that we RECEIVE facebook notifictions?

Edit: Correction: I now see a facebook friends list in Windows Live but those do not appear when I open new MESSAGE panel and click on To:, just as you've noted.  But, again, why would they?  Quote from: soybean on April 12, 2011, 08:22:49 AM

There Is a LOT wrong with this statement. There are/is an EPIC amount of sites today that offer 'log in with facebook'. When you log into facebook your login is an email address. Fact. Not sure what your trying to prove but the poster was quite right.

Solve : computer acting weird, won't recogize numbers correctly??

Answer»

I've been having problems using paypal today and when I called them today, they checked and cannot figure out why. I WENT to send an email to the buyer and you have to enter one of those 6 digit security numbers at the end to prove I'm not automated. When I entered the 6 digit number it said it was wrong and it is clear as day. I did this approx 5 more times. What's up with this? This may be why the paypal wasn't working. You need to resolve this with papal.

But do this first.
Go to the house or office of a trusted friend. See if you nan reproduce the problem on his computer.

If it WORKS alright on your friends computer, then suspect that you have a very clever key logger on your PC. It is a form of mallware and needs to be removed.

But if the same thing oculars on your friends computer, contact PayPal customer support.
I was later able to go to my wifes computer and the transaction went off without a hitch. So what should I do. I had just run Malware Anti-malware earlier because it was running slow, showed nothing, and I ran it again today, again showed nothing. I recently ran CC Cleaner and use AVG antivirus. I'm running windows 7 on an HP system only a month old. Until you fix this use her computer for transactions.
Some things you can try:
1. Contact HP and tell them you will send the thing back if they don't help you. (Worth a try.)
2. Create a NEW user account on you HP PC , log into the new local user account with administrator level. Download a copy of another browser. Turn off AVG anti-virus. See if you can get into the PayPal thing with the new local user account.
(They are a few esoteric things the go wrong with the keyboard map of a user. Hard to explain.)

If the above fails, go to the anti-virus forum and ask for help from the experts there.  They know how to spot rogue spy-ware.

Solve : compaq presario v2000 has some program that doesnt let it shut down right away?

Answer»

Hi all,

I noticed that my computer has been getting slow lately, and I couldnt figure out why.  I did the malware scan (malware bytes), I did registry cleanups (glary utilities), but everything came out clean, no errors reported, well the registry clean found a few dangling entries that it DELETED

When I try to shut down the LAPTOP, it doesnt shut down right away, rather it gives a message saying windows is waiting for  program to shut down.  And then five seconds later it shuts down.  What could this mysterious program be that is slowing my computer?
1) NEVER use registry cleaners. They CAUSE problems, they do not fix problems. There is no such thing as a good registry cleaner, only some that aren't as bad as others.

2) Here are some steps you can TAKE to try to speed up Windows Shutdown. Before editing the registry, be sure to either create an image of your system partition or backup the registry. If you don't know how, please ask.

 a) Make sure "clear pagefile at shutdown" is not enabled:
start - run - regedit
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management]

Set ClearPageFileAtShutdown value to 0

b) Start - Run - Regedit
Navigate to the following Registry key:
HKEY CURRENT USER\Control Panel\Desktop
Double click on the AutoEndTasks entry and replace the 0 with a 1 in the Value data text box

For the next two, if the dword value indicated does not exist, create it:

Double click on the WaitToKillAppTimeout entry in the right pane and change the Value data to 2000

Double click on the HungAppTimeout entry in the right pane and change the Value data to 1000

Reboot

c) HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control
Right-click on WaitToKillServiceTimeout and change it to 2000Allan,

I will try everything you said, but can you explain what the different steps do?

Also, why did my computer do this when it wasnt doing it earlier?  Is there anyway to find out what that program or process is that is CAUSING a SLOWDOWN
One thing, did the error message say anything specific? Or just some message indicating that windows is waiting for some unknown program to finish exiting first? Quote from: shashgo on April 12, 2011, 12:35:17 PM

Allan,

I will try everything you said, but can you explain what the different steps do?

Also, why did my computer do this when it wasnt doing it earlier?  Is there anyway to find out what that program or process is that is causing a slowdown

The pagefile setting is probably not the issue, but if it is set to "on", the pagefile is deleted before shutting down and that takes a long time. It then has to be recreated on the next boot.

The other settings reduce the default times for apps and services that "hang", or do not shut down properly, to be killed by the OS.2x3i5.....: yes the screen just says "windows is waiting for the following program to close".  And under it it has to buttons "force restart" and "wait"

allan:  Basically what you are showing me is how to make the computer not wait before it shuts down.  But the erroneous program is still going to be an issue.  Is there anyway for me to find out what is causing the strange behaviour.Control Panel - Performance Issues & Tools - Advanced Tools - View Performance Details in Event Log
Look for items in the Task Category column with the title Shutdown Performanceallan:  I went to that Event log and there are a few items listed there as causing a delay in shutdown.  But why are these items causing a delay nowadays when they didnt earlier like when the computer was newer?

I went through the entries for the 4/13, and these are the files that are causing the delay: lsass.exe, iTunesHelper.exe, PNRPsvc (its a PNRP service dll).  I know what iTunesHelper is and  probably have to stop it from msconfig from being loaded each time, but what are the other two entries and why are they causing problems

I have no idea.okay.  I did follow your previous post and now the shutdown is quicker. Thanks
okay

Solve : my screen has turned black!!!?

Answer»

Hey my Acer pc desktop has recently turned black.I restarted the computer but it didn't do anything but it pops up with documents for no REASON. i was going to get someone out but i thought i would ask yous first.Black screen and then documents STARTING themselves on reboot sounds very odd. If you have the SYSTEM restore CD or DVD,  would boot your system off of that DISK and then perform a repair installation or a restore with keeping your data instead of a full system restore that would wipe out all your data. Sounds like corruption instead of hardware issue with documents launching to open on own at boot.I don't have the restore CD or DVD as i got the computer SECONDHAND from radio rentals

Solve : Changing back to trustedinstaller?

Answer»

I recently took the ownership of system32 to change some .dll's, now when I try to GIVE ownership back to trusteinstaller I can't SEE it on list and when I try to click "Other users or groups..." then I get an error message: "Unable to display the user SELECTION dialog %1 is not valid win32 application" Any ideas on what should I do?Which DLL's did you replace? Was this system infected, you killed the malware, and you were fixing it piece by piece?

If you know the exact DLL's that you replaced, where did these DLL's come from, the web or another system of same OS and Service Pack version? The most common issue with DLL's is having ones of wrong version to that of the OS.

Now here's the problem. Windows 7 on the new laptop appears to have limited settings you can alter for people and have vision problems. When I tried to make adjustments, all it wants to do is talk to me. Okay, my vision is very bad, but I'm not yet to the point where the computer has to talk to me. I just want the text  to be larger and LEGIBLE, but Windows 7 still insists on making everything hard to see even after I asked for help.
What am I doing wrong?

But in in Windows XP I could get it to do what I want.

Solve : Vista laptop not working on wireless.?

Answer»

First off, does anyone know of any issues with Vista LAPTOPS connecting to invisible/non broadcasting routers? If not then details below.

About a month ago the laptop would randomly disconnect from my router. It is getting to the point that is is unusable. The REASON I think it may be Vista is that other wireless devises have strong stable connections to the router. Also the laptop will see and can connect to other visible routers in the area. I have updated everything, run virus checks, and deleted all saved networks from the laptop. Then manually input the info for the router, it finds it, and gives an option to "connect now." EVEN after all of that it wont work.

I have come to two conclusions; 1: Vista, 2: Wireless card in the laptop.
If anyone thinks its #2 please tell me how to confirm this. Let me know if you need any more info or have other ideas.

Thanks. Is the laptop under warranty? How old is it?
Other wireless devices can interfere. Have you tried changing the channel of the router? Other devices should be two or three meters away from the laptop. Does the laptop work BETTER in some spots in you room?
If you think it is the adapter, you can GET a good quality USB adapter for a small investment. Good to have anyway, when traveling  when you need an external adapter to pick up more signal.

Solve : Sites I log into not acting right suddenly.....?

Answer»

Ok, this is an odd one. There is a Forum site I frequent.. I CAN "log in"... YET when I try to retrieve any "PM" messages, clicking to go there, throws me back to the "login" screen, and I can NOT "login" HERE, tho i COULD login to the regular Forums!!  Site manager Suggested trying in IE (I use Firefox regularly) and it DID work. Fine, two days later, IT is acting like Firefox did, same error!! Any Idea WHAT is GOING on??
I use "Noscript".. disabled it, same results.
I Run Microsoft Security Essentials.....
I have turned off Malwarebytes, Superantispyware, SpybotS&D etc... none are running in the background that i know of, used MSCONFIG to check...
I run Windows 7..... and the Latest versions of BOTH Browsers..
Windows Firewall IS ON.........

In an unrelated, but MAYBE connected issue.. Blog site I run, the NEW "editor" program there quit working about the same time. I can use their "OLD EDITOR" program, but the new one refuses to fully load, you get a "swirly, that never finishes, no answer back from THEM on any issues on THEIR end...
HELP!!

Also, this started about the time I upgraded to IE 9... could they be interfering with each other?? Firefox is my primary (default)  Browser.Run it in Firefox Safemode from the Programs menu after clearing all cookies and rebooting....same results ? ?Installed Chrome, same results as the other two. Will try your suggestion now....Ok, went into tools/options and dumped all cookies etc... then help, and started in Safe mode.. same issue.

I also have "adblock plus" installed, but disabled it when this started happening as well..... no difference.Well if you've tried all that and 3 browsers i'd suggest it's on their end...

PS...Many Site Managers won't admit they are having issues as they are buried in work.BUMMER!! Ok... My wifes computer, SAME ISSUES! Tried hers while waiting.. so I think you are right!! And it's not on EVERY site I deal with , just these two... Well thanks for trying!  Guess all We can do is "wait for a fix" on their end.....I can check the site from this end if you wish...Oh yeah? Ok... this is the site.. http://www.missouricarry.com/forums/
what other info do you need??

Played around some more, quick tests shutting off Windows Firewall, "No Script" etc, no dice.. Got me stumped... (which is fairly easy, I'm no pro!) Could some "update" setting change have boofed something??

Ok, think I've got this nailed... I rolled back IE to version 8... and the Blog editor now works fine! The Forum deal, it's still acting a bit goofy, BUT I was able to get into where i needed to, although I had to take a roundabout path! The one Button on the SITE still isn't right, BUT, I can access my info via another route. Good enough for now. As to Firefox, did some research.. Version 4 seems to have the same/similar issues... scripting incompatibilities (and other things)  with some sites, and a few other things that don't jive with some programs the last version DID...so, I'm going to Go back to Firefox 3.6.14 tomorrow when i'm not groggy. The Bookmarks is a pain, i've got a zillion of them but we'll figure it out as well. Thanks for looking at this, It did kind of spur me in the right DIRECTION.... I'll let you know if we're 100% back after the rollback tomorrow!
Night all!! 2:22 am... UGH! Ok... IE8 is ok.. Firefox, I went back to 3.6.14.... forwards to 3.6.16... then went FURTHER back to 3.5....... nogo! So, I'll install/run Firefox 4.. hope these guys get their sites compatible, or Mozilla, puts out a fix.. for the others,,, I'll use IE i guess!!! Seems Firefox 4 got pushed out the door a bit early... same goes for IE 9!! That, or a LOT of places, are running WAY BEHIND the "tech curve"!!! Anyway, i'm back is business for the most part. Hope this may help someone else who's been "pulling hair"!! LOL!! Nite all.Actually i believe it's more of the fact that site managers aren't keeping up...
Good to hear you're 1/2 way home...

Solve : 5.1 sound trough S/PDIF?

Answer»

Dear experts,

I've been working on a solution on this for at least a month but I can't get it to work. This is my problem:

I've bought a Sony Blu-Ray e-370 (http://www.sony.co.uk/product/hch-systems-with-blu-ray-disc/bdv-e370/tab/technicalspecs) and would like to hear TRUE 5.1 SOUND when I connect my Acer laptop (http://laptops-specs.blogspot.com/2010/09/acer-aspire-5738-specifications.html) to my tv and Blu-Ray. This is what I've tried so FAR, without any luck:

- I've tried to sent the 5.1 sound trough hdmi to my tv and from there to my blu ray by a s/pdif cable. That didn't work because my hdmi doesn't pass more than 2 channels and I don't think my Bravia tv can send 5.1 sound trough s/pdif.
- I've connected a Toslink cable to the digital out (s/pdif) from my laptop and tried to sent it directly to my blu-ray. First I got a lot of errors so I updated my sound card drivers. After this the errors were gone, but still no 5.1 sound. I've tried all different kinds of CODEC packs and SETTINGS but nothing seems to work.

At this time I'm trying to set up ac3 filter in combination with MPC-HC, but it just won't transmit 6 channels. Right now, I'm not getting any sound in MPC-HC, probably because I've tried too many wrong settings.

I just don't have enough understanding about these things so please lend me a hand by solving this puzzle. I would be very grateful!

Solve : Converting URLS to text file?

Answer»

I have a FOLDER full of youtube favourites, links if you will. I want to get the URL of all of these links (140+ of them) into a single .txt file for downloading later. I've added all of those pages to my Favourites folder under Windows. Then copied all of the links in favourites to a folder and put them on another PC. I don't want to visit each page then copy the URL into the text file - I want to take the URL from all at once using a script and output to a text file. I've seen it done before with a python script but cannot remember how. I have access to mac or windows. Can someone help? Please don't double post. I deleted the duplicate threads.

Solve : Cloudy laptop screen?

Answer»

I have a HP pavilion entertainment PC DV4. The operating system is Windows 7. My daughter was using my computer while I was at work and when I came home she told me that my computer got really colorful. Well when I checked it out my screen was cloudy. I can see the information on the screen but it is as if I am looking through a fog. I have hooked it up to a different monitor and the screen is clear through that monitor. The screen also CLEARS up for a moment after the screensaver runs for a COUPLE of minutes, then it gradually returns to the foggy APPEARANCE. I use this computer for school and currently am unable to afford a new one. I can use it the way it is but I get headaches from trying to see the screen. Any help you can give me would be greatly appreciated.      Quote

Any help you can give me would be greatly appreciated.
The sure thing for the moment is to use the external monitor until you can fix he cause.  You need to know if your daughter did anything unusual.

There is a very slight possibility that this is a virus.
Here is something you can try. Have a friend get you a copy of a Live Linux CD.  My current favorite is Linux. Mint.
Quote
Apr 6, 2011 ... Linux Mint is an elegant, easy to use, up to date and comfortable GNU/Linux desktop distribution.
www.linuxmint.com/
It will cost nothing to try. It can run from the CD in the demo mode. If the screen looks alright in Linux, we can think it is a system problem caused by a bad program. But it is still cloudy, there really is a problem with the screen.

Replacing the screen can be costly. Not cost effective considering the risk of failure. You can sell your PC for parts and use the money to help pay for a new one with a warranty.

BTW. Presently some stores offer an extended warranty that covers accidental loss. WORTH investigating if you choose to buy a new PC. Will your daughter chip in?

So she didn't tell you what was spilled on it ? ?

Although I'm not sure about newer laptops, MANY laptop screens have brightness controls. It sounds like maybe the brightness slider may have accidentally been bumped.

Another thing that might be worth trying would be the Fn+F6 combination, which usually is set to reduce the brightness.

Solve : Emachine 1831-07 will not load Windows 7?

Answer»

My computer was shut down when my house lost power.  I cannot get the machine restarted.  When I cut the power on, I can only see the emachine logo.  I'm trying to get into safe mode, but I've TRIED pushing F5, F8, F12, and esc key, but nothing.  Esc and F12 result in a message telling me to wait, but nothing.  I've unplugged the power, tried holding down the power button, etc., and still nothing.

Does anyone have any suggestions?I'm guessing you are running Vista or Windows 7. Try booting to the OS DISC and choosing startup repair options.Yes I am running Windows 7.  I have the recovery disk that I made when I purchased the computer, but cannot access the disk.  What else should I do to gain access to the disk or get the machine to go to another screen?Have you set the CD as 1st boot device in the BIOS ? ?
I cannot get to any screen BEYOND the emachine logo to change it.  Any suggestions how to get there.  Are there any F-key COMBINATIONS that I'm no aware of? After reading several post in this forum, I REMOVED the battery and power cord.  That was the trick.  I was able to access via safe mode and now scanning system for any problems.

Solve : Black screen...?

Answer»

My computer randomly shuts down. No warning just a black screen. It then tries to restart and locks up before the windows is starting screen. I'm confused. If anyone has a few minutes to help me out I would appreciate it. Does it shut down or reboot? It reboots, or tries to and locks upDownload BlueScreenView:
http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/blue_screen_view.html
unzip downloaded file and double click on BlueScreenView.exe to run the program.
when scanning is done, GO to EDIT - Select All
Go to FILE - SAVE Selected Items, and save the report as BSOD.txt
Open BSOD.txt in Notepad, copy all of the content, and paste it into your next replyI downloaded the program, had no errors when I opened it the first time. Should I wait for next crash to find errors? No. If that's the case then you're almost certainly looking at a hardware problem. The three most likely culprits are the power supply, ram or the hd. The last two are easy enough to check:

1) To check the ram, download memtest (http://www.memtest.org/). Burn it to a cd using a dedicated .iso burning UTILITY (http://www.petri.co.il/how_to_write_iso_files_to_cd.htm), make sure the cd drive is at the top of the boot order in bios, then boot to the newly created cd and run the utility.

2) Right-click on a command prompt icon and open as administrator. In the command prompt window type:chkdsk /r  (then press ENTER). You'll be told the disk is in use and asked if you want to run checkdisk on the next boot. Say yes, exit the command prompt window, and reboot.

3) To check the power supply you need to replace it with a new one.I ran the memtest, that passed. I just built this computer, so the power supply should be ok, key word "should". Its been a few years since I've built one so I'm wondering if I missed something. What brand PSU ? ?
I've SEEN them flakey right outta the box.

Easiest test is to swap a known good one in there of the same or greater wattage...Thermaltake TR2-600wTheir units are generally well built....still wouldn't hurt to test just to rule it out as a culprit...I will look into that option. Only thing I didnt buy when I built this was my video card. It is a few years old and have been wondering if that could be that cause. If so I SEE BUYING one soon anyways.Could be...
But you have the same option as with the PSU...borrow a known good one and swap it in there...

Don't spend cabbage you don't have to...I hear you. The finding one to try is the hard part. Everyone I know gets a BestBuy special but I will see what I can find. The black screen error is caused due to faulty registry settings and improper registry keys. It is recommended to use the registry cleaner software in the system that will help in deleting the faulty entries from the registry. The registry entries might have been created because of malware infection when connected with Internet. The user should download the registry cleaner software only from the genuine website and it must be of the latest version. You can safely ignore the advice above...

Solve : Vista takes 5 minutes to boot up?

Answer»

Im trying to sort out my friends windows vista LAPTOP. It takes about 5 minutes to boot up. Ive ran a malware and virus scan as well as defraging and cleaning out his temp internet files. Ive even went into msconfig and removed  unnecessary programs from loading up and it STILL takes ages to start. Ive noticed that it KEEPS saying on it that its looking for new hardware for BitDefender Firewall NDIS Filter Miniport but fails to install it. I uninstalled the program but the problem is still there. Could this be the problem?

SPECS:
Dell Inspiron 1525
2gb DDR2 RAM
2ghz Duo Core 2Uninstall BitDefender...
If he didn't pay for it there are better Free alternatives such as Avast...I have BitDefender uninstalled but the problem persists, i have avast home edition installed as well as malwarebytes and Ccleaner
Did you uninstall........then re-boot?No reason to run 2 Virus apps side by side...what did you clear out from startup ? ?Yeah i rebooted, before i installed those programs the laptop was still the same. I don't think its going to make any difference if i uninstall malwarebytes. I do myself have those programs installed on my own Windows XP PRO PC. The programs i stopped from loading up would be adobe, google desktop and xaudio. Even on msconfig if i click on Boot > Advanced Options and i have the number of processors set to 2 and the memory to max
Malwarebytes isnt a Anti-virus

BitDefender and Avast are......you should only run one!

I dont want to sound pedantic, but have you got a dual-core or 2 processors?Since i have just a Pentium 4 on my own PC my friends laptop says that its a Core 2 Duo, is that 2 processors?
No, its 2 cores in one processor!

Change your settings back to 1 processor and re-bootI changed the settings back to 1 processor but its still the same  Quote

..what did you clear out from startup ? ?
How slow is slow?

Can you time it from pushing the power button to actual log on screen!

Solve : Help with HDMI output?

Answer»

Back when i had Windows Vista in late December of 09, I wanted to test out my HDMI output on HP LAPTOP. It worked perfectly, i was able to play HD videos off my computer and it would play through my HD Toshiba TV.

But now that i have upgraded to windows 7. (which i did in the first week of January) I cant seem to connect my computer to my TV. Nothing happens. I don't know why it's doing this.
When i plug the HDMI cord into my pc, my screen turns black, but nothing SHOWS up on my TV. It just says "No video signal."

And i dont know if this helps, but my graphics card is: NVIDIA GeForce 8200M GRight click on your desktop and go into your Nvidia Control Panel.

From there you should be able to set up the TV as the display. You'll probably have to do this before you connect the TV to the laptop.

Or, you might need to right click on desktop and go into "Personalize". Then click on "Display Settings". Then click on "Monitors".Thankyou for replying.

Im not exactly sure what setting to modify or even how to set up the TV display in the Nvidia control panel.
Also, i cant locatre the "monitors" page in "display settings."Click on Advanced Settings after Display Settings.

I think the setup of the settings and control panel may be slightly different on a laptop. I'm on a desktop so it's kinda hard to give complete instructions on this, but I know that one of the two methods is how you get to the settings that allow the TV to be used as the display.

Sorry for the lack of instruction on my part. Maybe someone with a laptop that has done this before will be of better assistance. The only settings to change is for my laptop's monitor. I think I would be able to change/set up the settings for the TV if i were to plug in the HDMI cord in the computer. The problem is that my computer turns black whenever i plug the HDMI cord in. I even try using fn-f4 and window-p, but it does nothing.I'm a little confused on this problem.  HDMI is HDMI.  It is a standardized set of protocols and pin outs and it shouldn't be different from OS to OS any more that VGA should change from one OS to another.

My WAG is that something else is going on.  Bad cable, bad connector, bad port, etc.Well it has to be one of settings on my computer.
I was able to get my computer to display now without that black screen when the hdmi cored is plugged in.

I have both the tv and computer set at the same resolution. (1366x768)
When i click on "Connect to a projector," my desktop still doesnt show up on my TV. I've tried it on both duplicate and extend. Quote from: rthompson80819 on February 28, 2010, 10:36:37 PM

My WAG is that something else is going on.  Bad cable, bad connector, bad port, etc.
I havent tried connecting it with another computer (cause i dont have another one)
But the cable is in working condition, it works with my bluray. plus the ports seem to work fine, my computer detects that it's connected to my tv. Quote from: rthompson80819 on February 28, 2010, 10:36:37 PM

I don't think the HDMI cable or the type of cable is the issue. The problem is that there is no signal to the TV from the laptop. It used to work, but after a install of Windows 7, it doesn't work anymore.Try this whoopiedoo, if you haven't already...

1. Connect PC to TV via HDMI. (You said you can do this without getting a black screen, correct?)

2. Click on "Connect to a Projector or other External Display".

3. Choose the display CONFIGURATION desired.

4. Activate the output to the TV. (screen may go black)

5. Shut down PC, but leave the everything connected, and leave the TV on.

6. Turn PC back on, and see if a display pops up on either screen.

If you turn the PC back on and at least get a display on the PC, this will allow you to make the adjustments to the PC settings. If it automatically displays on the TV, then you're good to go.Still nothing on the TVIs the PC recognizing that an external monitor is connected after performing the above steps?

What is the model # of the HP laptop?YEPP, it recognizes it.

The model number is: HP G60-445DXI've got the exact same issue with the same laptop... so I am going to give this a BTTNice bump...
Good Luck.

Solve : Help in creating a batch file?

Answer»

I am using W7 Ultimate.
I wish to create a batch file that will;

1. measure  the free space on HDD D:, and if less that 50GB delete the oldest folder named LIKE "Fri 04.23.2010"

2. Do an image backup to Drive D:

3. Rename the image BU folder to a name like that in step 1.

I already have the command for step three.
The 50GB should be able to be changed through editing.
For step 1, INSTEAD of measuring free space, the number of folders could be counted and remove the oldest folder if the count exceeds a certain number, again editable. Quote from: blockie on April 24, 2010, 08:12:48 PM

Need to be The system Administrator  for Win 7Hello,
what you want to do in batch is not really very hard. RATHER than ask why you didn't just go ahead and do it yourself I'm going to ask you some of the questions about your idea.
First of all, are you really sure this is a valid idea? Is this the sort of thing you really want your computer to do automatically? Why?
The information you have given is not complete for a real world application using batch file, or for that matter, any other type of common programming method.
There are major flaws either of mission or design. Here's one example of what WILL go wrong. A certain folder is DELETED , only because it's the oldest folder. How can you be sure that it's not a folder that would have critical information in it that should not be deleted? Further, how do you know that deleting the oldest folder would resolve the issue of freeing up more than 50 GB on the hard drive? Do you understand that deleting a folder may not free up disk space? Even if the folder was not empty?.
Also, what should the PROGRAM do if there is FAILURE or if something does not go as planned? Should it stop the process? Should WAIT for human to intervene? If a human was available at all times, why even use a batch program to do this?
Sorry, but I don't like the idea of just nuking some folder because it's old and there is a limited amount of disk space. Unless it's done by a human.

Not really but first make sure you have a 64-bit capable processor (almost all are nowadays) and that your other hardware (video card for example) has 64-bit drivers.

64-bit (Windows I assume) can run well with 2GB RAM but you should have more if you want nice performance. 2GB RAM on a 64-bit system is almost like having 1GB-1.5GB on a 32-bit system. Quote

I would wait to switch. There are programs that are not yet available for 64-bit, an example would be Adobe Flash Player. It is true that support for 64-bit has gotten better but it will still continue to get better in the future. I wait about a year or 2 until a larger percent of the market adopts 64-bit and then switch to 64-bit. By then it'll be much better supported.Flash player does not support 64 bit browsers, but works on any 64 bit OS.True but then there is no advantage over using 64 bit, flash player won't be optimized for 64 bit so it won't run any better on a 64 bit system then it would on a 32 bit one. Quite a few programs are like that so I would stick with 32 bit a while longer.

PS: I heard a rumor that Adobe Flash player 64 bit was being released for Linux only.

Not too many probably. It not worth it (in my opinion) to switch to 64 and use mainly 32 bit app.

She may wish to have a simple, direct answer.
Say you have a 64 bit CPU and the right 32 and 64 bit drivers
You have both 32 and 64 bit windows 7
You have 4GB of RAM only.
All the applications programs are 32 bit.
Given that,

Solve : Windows 7 Installation Nightmare?

Answer»

Okay, I have a laptop with Windows Vista and I'm installing Windows 7. Both 64 bit. Laptop didn't really have any data on it I needed so instead of just updating I chose the advanced install option. It worked FINE until it got to 'Completing INSTALLATION' phase where it stalled. I left it on overnight and still nothing. My Windows Vista doesn't work any longer and Windows 7 isn't properly installed either. I'm trying to REINSTALL now hoping it will magically work but I'm not going to be too hopeful and I don't want a useless machine.

Solve : backed up ALL files- restarted computer to factory condition- cant reload files?

Answer»

my computer was running rediculously slow. i got norton, didnt really help. didnt know what to do. then my cpu WENT crazy. bluescreen kept reappearing, then it kept restarting, sometimes going to the safemode SCREEN, sometimes regularly. EVERYTIME i logged in, it repeated the process. so i got on hp help page, or whatever it is, (before windows could load i guess) and backed up all my files, then i restarted my computer back to factory condition. now after going through all the startup processes again, i cant figure out how to reload all my documents and pictures and such. i can find files, but when i open them, they are "corrupt" or i have to find a way to open it -via internet or other program- . is there an way i can get everything back to the way it was?
ALSO, did i screw myself over in someway, or am i just stupid?Hi,

I would like to know the operating system and also the ERROR message  you get when you try to open the files.
Please mention the pre installed operating system installed.

Please reply.ahm files are already corrupted, it did happen also to my laptop but the good thing about acer there's an automatic restore command that even i wasn't able to open my laptop it did automatic back-up the files and i proceeded to reformat it without worries. Well, i suggest you look first to solutions in some sites like- supportrix.com/SUPPORTRIX/Main.php?do=LearnMore. Good luck.

Solve : Internet explorer flys off the screen when I open it.?

Answer»

I am running windows 7.  My computer is brand new and I cant tell you much more.  when I open explorer it flys off to the right of the screen.  when I go to the tool bar at the bottom of the screen it shows that it is open.  Help me please.Define: "flies off the right of the screen". EXACTLY what happens?
Are there any other problems with the SYSTEM?Hi Alan,
When I open explorer it APPEARS to vanish quickly off of the screen to the right.  When I CLICK on the icon on the tool bar at the bottom it comes back across the screen to the icon.  If I just put the cursor on the icon it shows that it is open.  As far as I know I dont have any further problems.Try this and see what happens:
Go to the icon you click on to open Internet Explorer. Right click on the icon, Properties, then change "RUN" to something other than what it's set at (ie, if it reads "maximized" change it to "normal window" or vice versa). Let us know what happens.

Also, I suggest you run a full scan of your system with BOTH your anti virus utility and MalwareBytes.Thank you.  I will see what happens and leet you know.  Thanks again for your help. What's GOING on?  This sounds like an interesting problem. Quote from: Doug on May 16, 2010, 03:31:03 PM

Solve : Blue error screen on newly built computer?

Answer»

Hi, I have recently put together a computer package for the first time and installed Windows 7 64-bit on it. The actual construction and OS installation went flawlessly, but almost immediately a bluescreen error message began coming up periodically. Whe  I restart the computer it works again, but after a while the error message comes up again. I have not really been able to interpret what the problem is but I have checked and there are no drivers missing. I can also add that when the computer is running it works without any problems and I can even play several new games without it hacking.

Picture of error message:
http://i49.tinypic.com/r1ab7b.jpg

EDIT: Now a new error message came up:
http://i50.tinypic.com/hrf1vo.jpg

the computer in question has the following components:
# AMD Athlon X2 II 250, 3.0GHz, AM3, 2MB, 65W, Boxed
# OCZ Value. DDR3 1333MHz 4GB, CL9, Kit w / two matched ValueRAM 2GB DDR3
# GF615M MSI-P33, Socket AM3, m-ATX, GEFORCE 6150se, DDR3, SATAII, GbLAN, PCI-Ex16
# Sapphire Radeon HD 4670 1GB DDR2, 750MHz
# 250 GB HDD
# 500 W PSU

I am very grateful if I can get some help with this so that I can finally start using my new computer without having to fear that it will suddenly stop working.

Thanx1.  BlueScreenView.  Download, unzip, and run Nirsoft's BlueScreenView.  This program will extract information from the minidumps on your system and display them in a format that makes it easier to look for a "pattern" (similarities or differences).  If you're getting different Stop Codes on your BSODs, it might prove useful.  If you're getting the same Stop Code, it will show that also.

Hold off on this for now - but if needed, these procedures "borrowed" from Broni permit you to gather data in format that may be posted to a thread:
Quote

Download BlueScreenView
No installation required.
Double click on BlueScreenView.exe file to run the program.
When scanning is done, go Edit>Select All.
Go File>Save Selected Items, and save the REPORT as BSOD.txt.
Open BSOD.txt in Notepad, copy all content, and paste it into your next reply.

2.  "athrxusb.sys" Driver.  The Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) on your Stop Code "0x000000D1" flagged driver "athrxusb.sys" as the culprit.  If your BSODs consistently finger this driver, you should replace it.  Uninstall and reinstall this driver, download a "fresh" copy, or look for a newer (or different) version.

One website identified this as an Atheros driver for a USB "wireless" adaptor.

3.  Memory Diagnostic.  If your BSODs identify many different Stop Codes and/or culprits, you should test your system RAM.  Even if you don't suspect memory, it's worthwhile to exercise the motherboard, CPU, and memory independent of the Windows software.

Download the "free" diagnostic software at either www.memtest86.com  or www.memtest.org  and create the desired bootable media.  Boot the program and let it run indefinitely ( key to exit).Hi,

Solve : When I start windows, I log in and there is a black screen!?

This morning, I started my computer up like normal, then something popped up at the bottom SAYING to "keep blocking" or "unblock" itunes. I unblocked it cause i thought it was HARMLESS but then my computer started getting really slow then it froze. I restarted my computer and logged in. This took an abnormally long TIME to boot up and while it was logging in, it said "preparing your desktop".

When it finished logging in, there was a black screen and all i could do was see and move the mouse and open task MANAGER. I then restarted it in SAFE mode and ran AVG but while it was scanning, it said that some files were locked and could not be scanned like C:Programfiles/Desktop or something like that. Now i dont know what to do cause i can't get back on regular windows.System Restore.

so i do and then it gos on to the grub screen and no matter what i do i just get error 15:file not found.
i would really like some help please. You will get some better help in just a bit.
Let me be first to say "Welcome."
It sounds like you have tried to install Windows 7 along with a Linux and Windows XP multi-boot.
Windows 7 uses a new method of setting up the Master Boot Record. EARLY versions of Linux use the conventional way of reading and writing the MBR.

Recently I have had problem,s like this. I understand you frustration, Sorry I don't have a quick fix. If you have a "Live" Linux CD, like Ubuntu, you can start it and save you personal data to a USB stick.

Matter of fact, I am on a Ubuntu CD right now.

Yes. You can find it on the Microsoft site.
OR
Windows 7 trial version
(Read the fine print.)
NOTE: It is a trail version. You should install it on a workstation by itself. When it is uninstalled it will may do near permanent changes to the hard drive that can not be fixed easily.

Maybe this is what caused the problem the OP has? Quote

I've never heard this anywhere...
Sorry I misspoke.
I MEANT to say that it does not have an uninstall process that works the way you would perhaps like. Windows 7 makes a change to the hard drive that appears to another OS as some kind of hardware error.
But it is not a real change to the hardware. It is a change to the MBR . The change is compatible within defined limits. You can run Windows XP on a disk that had been altered by Windows 7. But doing uninstall Windows 7 does not reverse the changes made to the MBR. This is similar, but not the same, as a ISSUE with some older Linux fdisk utilities.
After doing the trail and if you no longer want the Windows 7 and if you want to use an older OS, then you have to do a full deletion, creation and format before installing the older OS on a hard drive that hard Windows 7 on it. That is why I recommend you install it on a HDD by itself.

An yes, there can be exceptions. Windows 7 does not force a partition boundary to land on a cylinder boundary. Older OS expect the boundaries to align. It will cause strange behaviors with and without error messages. If the OS part ion and cylinder boundaries just align anyhow, there would be no problem.

I hope this clears up some of the CONFUSION. Just went through the torture of getting my stuff off of my 250GB drive because I could not longer boot it without Windows 7 or a second drive present in the system. Drove me crazy.  So I start babbling a lot. Lost some sleep. Didn't get it fixed until 4 am.so has any one found out how to fix this one yet??Where was the DLoad from ? ?heres the link to the 90 day trail

You can RULE out it being your OS or hard drive corruption.

"IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL" is a MEMORY address error.

Most commonly it is the CPU overheating. A close second would be bad RAM. The first thing I would do if you have this issue is to run the machine till it gives you that error, then immediately reboot it, go into the BIOS and check the CPU temperature. 3/5 times it will be way too hot. You need to clean fans from dust including the CPU, ensure they are all working, getting a good airflow.

This Stop message indicates that a kernel-mode process or driver attempted to access a memory address to which it did not have permission to access.

I would get a memory check tool like Microsoft Windows Memory Diagnostic:
http://oca.microsoft.com/en/windiag.asp

Boot up running a memory test. Test for corrupted/damaged memory. This might take a while, if any issues, remove the memory and test by adding one each time. For safety when opening your computer - Leave it plugged in but turned off at the wall (this gives a ground line), hold the power button to drain excess power in the supply (this prevent power still being in the system). CAREFUL when handling RAM and anti-static yourself by at least touching the metal area of the case. I believe this would be your issue, if not overheating.

Other reasons for that blue screen could be incompatible software used, out-dated BIOS not compatible with the hardware, etc. Update your BIOS and ensure applications are compatible. From your error messages I don't believe this is the case. More than likely it's memory.Actually the most common cause of that error is bad, missing, conflicting, or corrupt drivers. The proper first troubleshooting step is to update all key drivers (video, audio, NIC - even mouse & keyboard if applicable) and check for a bios flash.Well. Thank you Allan   &   Azzaboi   I really need help now

Solve : How can you delete something, that isn't there??

Answer»

I have three FILES on my desktop, that won't delete.

Every time I tried to delete them they wouldn't delete. I tried unlocker assistant and I tried hijackthis but neither worked.

How do I delete these three files?

(here is a desktop capture of the files)
http://img535.imageshack.us/img535/9871/culprit.jpg

can you rename them? if so try naming them so they don't end in a period. You might want to display file extensions when you do this, as well.no I can't rename them.

They were .flv files that I downloaded. whenever I downloaded an .flv movie, it would create the same file but with a period at the end of it (which are the files i'm trying to delete).when you try to delete them, do you get an error message? What is it?the error message is this:

http://img263.imageshack.us/img263/9540/errormessagec.jpg1) Try deleting them in safe MODE
2) Right click on one of the icons - then properties - where does it say it is located?
3) Run a scan with MalwareBytesWhat about the use of programs such as :
File Deleter 1.018 .....etcPlease download SystemLook from one of the links below and save it to your Desktop.
Download Mirror #1
Download Mirror #2

  • Double-click SystemLook.exe to run it.
  • Vista users:: Right click on SystemLook.exe, click Run As Administrator
  • Copy the content of the following box into the main textfield:
Code: [Select]:filefind
tutorial.flv
splattertext
cool_font.flv
  • Click the Look button to start the scan.
  • When finished, a notepad window will open with the results of the scan. Please post this log in your next reply.
Note: The log can also be found on your Desktop entitled SystemLook.txt
You meant that the files will always appear to be there on every boot?

Did you try right clicking the any empty space on the desktop with the mouse and then clicking refresh on the MENU that pops up? Usually when I get the error of file not in the location anymore like you did, I just had to refresh the folder or location for which the file used to exist.Sounds like your trying to Delete something that was already deleted but not succcesfully. If its really that annoying just do s system restore to the latest checkpoint. (when u downloaded it)Look carefully at the message and you will see the dot at the end of the filename.  This problem occurrs when third party software (e.g. a plugin in Mozilla Firefox) creates a file that has a 'dot' at the end without any further file extensions (e.g. 'mozilla_created_file.').

Safe mode, security software, trying to rename the file in command prompt won't work. It seems the file system cannot reach the file by its name. However, it is possible to reach it with wildcards.

Go to the problem folder in command prompt and run:

C:\ProblemFolder> del *.*

Then you should be able to delete the folder any way you want.

Or else if you don't want to delete all the files in that folder,

Start->Run "cmd"
CD to the path that the problem folder or file resides in.
DIR /A /X /P
RENAME (the 8.3 filename for problem file/folder) (a non-problem name)
EXITyep, that's definitely what happened. I suspected the dot at the end had something to do with it, and that the shell was unable to deal with it or stripped it off before trying to find the file (and therefore couldn't find it).

Just confirmed that by creating a file ending with a period with my file library- explorer refuses to delete the file- cmd refuses the delete it when I say "del testfile." Even trying to delete the file with Visual Basic's Built in "kill" statement gave me a file not found error.

Even my library itself is unable to access the file (looks like I'll be checking that out later)

but "del testfile.*" work.

I was able to determine the root cause of the entire problem- the "GetFileAttributes()" API Function returns -1 when passed a file name ending with ".". since "GetFileAttributes() is commonly used to determine file existence, it might be the cause of this issue. I KNOW it's what is causing it in my library.

I was able to make my Internal "fileExists" Function work and detect when the file was found. But when I tried to delete the file using the DeleteFile() API function it crashed, heh.ok well, I fired up CMD and cd'd my desktop, then did DIR A/ X/ P/. Then, once I saw the file names, I just did:

Code: [Select]C:\Users\XXXXX\Desktop>del TUTORI~1

C:\Users\XXXXX\Desktop>del SPLATT~1

C:\Users\XXXXX\Desktop>del COOL_F~1
and voila! now they're gone. Thanks guys

end result: http://img706.imageshack.us/img706/3956/endresult.png

Also SystemLook is a very useful program so i'll definately be using that in the future. Thanks ^^

PS: Do you like my wallpaper I made?
