Solve : Windows 7 Freeze?

Answer»

Here are my specs first

Windows 7 Ultimate 64-Bit
EVGA 780i SLI mobo
8 GB of RAM
3 Samsung F3 Spinpoint (RAID 0)
Q6600 2.4
Corsair 750W
EVGA GTX 280

So here we go

A few weeks ago i installed windows 7 into my three HARD drives and it worked without a problem and it was lightning fast. Until recently about 5 days ago when i was surfing the WEB and i had youtube open and listening to music. The comp suddenly froze up and the sound went robotic and crazy for about 10 seconds and then it went back to normal for about 10 mins then this would happens again. I thought that is was an audio driver error. So i downloaded the driver with a few freezes in between. then rebooted but that only made things worse. when i logged back in i wanted to also install my video and mobo drivers again, but no luck in normal booting becuase the freezes were so bad that they wont not even let me log in. So i went into safe mode and that ok until about 5 mins into it, it started to freeze up as well. So i said heck with it and wanted to just reinstalled windows 7 again. then in the second step Expanding what EVER. it gives me an error ( i dont have the code with me now but i can post it) So i called EVGA and gave them the code and they said that it was a ram issue or it was a bad CD (Student Cd that i got from college). I ran MemTest86+ for 10 hours with no errors (i am going to test sticks tonight) and i am going to run the samsung ultity for the hard drives also.

if anyone else has any input or help they can give me that would be great

P.s. i have XP on my extra 320 gb (works great no problems)

Solve : Need to get a backup.?

Answer»

Hi -
I have Vista Home Basic  32 BIT.  I don't know much about it but I have had my computer for a couple of years but  I have NEVER gotten a backup on to a DVD that will let me restore.  I have tried Windows but I can't get it to run as a restore.  I have tried Macrium Reflect but I can't get it to run as a restore.  I know that there must be something I'm doing wrong.  Can someone suggest ANOTHER Backup and restore PROGRAM that might be easier to run for someone who is not to smart.    Hopefully this will be a free program.
Thanks for your time.    Bob

Solve : Windows 7 and Java?

Answer» HI,
I have a friend who plays on pogo.com a lot. He just got a windows 7 machine and found that when he TRIES to play pogo things are small. In other words when he spawns a game the popup java applet shows on his screen about 50% smaller then when he was using XP. Anyone know of  a WAY to make the applet/game show bigger on the screen?

Thanks

thanks but that really doesn't do anything for a java applet. The web site gets bigger but when you start the game the popup is the same size.

Solve : Vista on USB flash drive?

Answer»

A friend and I are planning to set up his laptop tonight with his Vista Ultimate disc. But the problem is that his CD drive is broken. Can we install Vista from a USB flash drive? How would we do that?Ok I found these:
http://kurtsh.spaces.live.com/blog/cns!DA410C7F7E038D!1665.entry

They want me to partition the usb disk. Will I be able to repartition it and use it for data storage afterwards? Is there an easier way to install Vista from a flash drive?I was about to say NO.
Then I did a Google.
They  say you can.
Install VISTA with no DVD
http://www.google.com/search?q=Install+VISTA+with+no+DVD

EDIT: MS has a way to do Windows 7 from a USB. It can PUT the ISO file onto a USB device. But I did not see if that can be done with Vista.

I installed windows 7 from a usb driveVista was not designed to be installed from a USB flash drive, but Microsoft designed Win7 to be installed from flash drives. Tell me: How MANY netbooks have you saw running Vista? Microsoft announced that it would be easy to install Win7 on netbooks because with Windows 7 all you had to do was copy the files from the setup DVD to a USB flash drive. With XP and Vista the files need to be built properly for this to work...at least they paid attention with Win7...Ive been trying to re-install vista/7 but BIOS is locked, we've been looking for a way to boot off usb w/o going on bios and changing boot sequence bcos its locked, no luck so far? Any suggestions? Oh, and i have no administration privileges she did but the password is lost somewhere in  her head, she never even knew she set a bios p/w, tried leaving blank, tried safemode... ty

Solve : Keyboard button combinations not working. Fixable and how??

Answer»

If i press and HOLD the KEYS DSG or ASX at the same time, nothing happens. In comparison: If i press and hold ASD I'll get something like asddddddddddddddddddddddddd in e.g. Open Office Word. And that is what should happen when i press and hold dsq but which does not. It's annoying when I play World of Warcraft. I can't trigger an ability that is keybinded to Q, if I'm already holding down S and D.
I've heard that it has nothing to do with the KEYBOARD itself. And I'm playing on a laptop so changing keyboard is not an option I guess.

My question is: Is there a way to fix this? If so, how do I fix it? Quote from: Kubrak on May 14, 2010, 10:55:09 AM

from wikipedia- notably, the second paragraph.
Quote
Some low-quality keyboards suffer problems with rollover (that is, when multiple keys are pressed in quick succession); some types of keyboard circuitry will register a maximum number of keys at one time. This is undesirable for games (designed for multiple keypresses) and undesirable for extremely fast typing (hitting new keys before the fingers can release previous keys). A common side effect of this shortcoming is called "phantom key blocking": on some keyboards, pressing three keys simultaneously sometimes resulted in a 4th keypress being registered.

Modern keyboards prevent this from happening by blocking the 3rd key in certain key combinations, but while this PREVENTS phantom input, it also means that when two keys are depressed simultaneously, MANY of the other keys on the keyboard will not respond until one of the two depressed keys is lifted. With better keyboards designs, this seldom happens in office programs, but it remains a problem in games even on expensive keyboards, due to wildly different and/or configurable key/command layouts in different games.

It's not a problem with the keyboard, it's a problem with gaming on any keyboard. you have to rearrange your bindings so that the type of stuff you would commonly need to use a lot are bound to keys like shift, control, and alt (if it allows alt to be bound).

Solve : Windows 7 - "Consider Replacing Your Battery"?

Answer»

"Consider Replacing Your Battery"
I am using a acer laptop and have recently installed the Windows 7. I was using the Windows vista HB before, and did not have any issues with the battery, but now the battery symbol in the NOTIFICATION bar is crossed out and the exact error message is that "[t]here is a problem with your battery, so your computer might shut down suddenly". The battery I am using is 1 year old, so it may in fact need to be replaced, but as far as I can tell it is functioning properly...

Did anybody else run into this problem, and do you guys think that the battery does in fact need to be replaced?

i have also reffered to the microsoft forums and sevens' have a look at it
it seems to be a bug because a million of peeps got this kind of problem what do you think members??
have a look at these links: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en/w7itprohardware/thread/c6c043e6-eeb1-4e61-870d-896ca2f865d6

http://www.sevenforums.com/general-discussion/18312-consider-replacing-your-battery.html

but microsoft refuses to accept this ::

http://www.engadget.com/2010/02/08/microsoft-says-windows-7-battery-issue-isnt-one/It's a bug. but not with windows. with the ACPI support of some BIOSes.

it's interesting how everybody in that thread you linked is complaining "please fix this microsoft"

"oh Microsoft, why didn't you fix it in the RTM" etc etc. misplaced blame, really.

If I may retell a story I read in "The Old New Thing" regarding Windows 95 support; originally, they used a "HALT" instruction to conserve battery life in some situations on laptop computers. Some specific (and un-named) vendor's laptops froze irretrievably and couldn't be recovered from the HALT. So they took it out.

And then people were complaining that MS didn't use the HALT instruction. "How could they be so stupid" etc.

Anyway- back to the issue at hand, It's a problem with Acer (note that, interestingly enough, even though the original poster in the linked thread has a machine from LG, Acer actually manufactures the hardware for LG... can't be a coincidence.

1 yr. is not very old for a battery, but I'd think you would know whether it was getting near the end of its useful life. How was battery run time before you installed Win 7?

Solve : Increase thumbnail preview size in Vista without using external application??

Answer»

I would like to increase the thumbnail preview size in Windows Vista to something more readable (akin to that in Windows 7, actually).  Here's the rub:

I can not download/install a third-party utility or APPLICATION to do this.

Is there a registry entry I can change or some other software switch built into Vista to do this?  A cursory search with Google and on Microsoft's Support site didn't reveal anything.I'll suggest this:  http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/increase-size-of-windows-vista-taskbar-previews/.  I have not used it but it looks like it will do just what you want. It does indeed.  However, I can not download/install a third-party utility or application to do this. Quote from: The RADDISH on May 11, 2010, 11:57:14 AM

Why?  Is this a work computer?

I believe you have no other option than using a third-party utility since the capability to change the size of preview thumbnails is not is a standard installation of Vista. Why is it assumed that everything has a registry setting?

The size of the thumbnail used in Vista is hard-coded into explorer.exe. It's a registry setting in 7, so they "fixed" it, SORT of. Quote from: BC_Programmer on May 11, 2010, 10:18:08 PM

I guess because so many functions do.  To be FAIR, I did ask if there is a registry entry I can change or some other software switch built into Vista to make the change I was after.

Knowing it is hard coded at least gives me the information not to waste time to pursue this further.  Thanks guys. I know how to do this is XP. but never really Figured out how to do it in vista or 7  Quote from: johngetter on May 12, 2010, 10:11:54 AM

Gadgets put information and fun—like news, pictures, games, and the phases of the moon—right on your desktop.

In Windows Vista, gadgets are lined up on the right side of your desktop. Windows 7 sets them free on the screen, where you can move and resize them as you like.

Solve : Boot Hang?

Answer»

Sometimes, when I turn on my computer, I never get to the BIOS screen. The lights all turn on, and I can hear the components working, but nothing shows up on screen.
I have to hold down the power BUTTON to turn it off, then turn it back on again. This brings up the "Windows failed to start" message, which advises that I run startup repair. I've run that several times and it has not found anything.
In the event viewer, all it says is "Kernel-Power" related ERROR. I've read a little on support sites, and it said that a hot hard drive can cause things to not boot, but my hard drive never really gets that hot. What could be the problem?Hi,
I would like to know if you are using Laptop or Desktop. And I also would like to know the MANUFACTURER of your machine. Because BIOS settings CHANGE from manufacturer to manufacturer. The thread is ALMOST two months old.

Solve : Cannot do a restore, always says it fails?

Answer»

I installed updates for NVidia GForce 6100 yesterday.  After installation, the size of icons, words, web pages, desktop, etc., changed to much, much smaller.  I have been unsuccessful in trying to change it back so decided to do a restore before the update.  I have chosen 3 different restore points and each time it tells me it has failed, choose another restore point.  Any ideas as to what I should do?  THANKS in advance.
Gotta love system restore. It's great - until you need it. That's why I recommend that EVERYONE use a disc imaging utility on a regular basis.

How are you trying to change the resolution size and what happens when you try to make the change?Allan, I do not KNOW how, but I got it changed back to the way it was.  I was changing Display (1200x800 or whatever the numbers) and the sides of my desktop were black, no picture DISPLAYED on the whole screen.  Could not get it to display correctly, but now that I have it back, I wish I knew what I did.  But what is a disc imaging utility?  I'm somewhat computer stupid, so everything needs to be explained.  Thanks!

Apparently, this was a problem of improper resolution setting after installing the new video driver.  Sometimes, resolving such PROBLEMS can be done easier by starting in Safe Mode.

Solve : Windows vista missing network Drivers?

Answer»

I have Toshiba laptop (Satellite U505-S2925BN), upgraded from VISTA to Win7, every thing is working fine except when I checked the drivers on the device manager I found a question mark under other devices and when I open it I found 4 drivers missing: Base system Device (2 times), NETWORK CONTROLLER, and unknown device.
I also noticed that my wireless is not working it is not detecting my router and I can not connect to internet any more. When I click on the question mark I got this message "The drivers for this device are not installed (Code 28)"
I have tried to find these drivers on Toshiba site with no help. All drivers are available except this one...please helpYou need to start by installing the correct chipset driver for Windows 7Hi Allan, I have DONE as per your advice, but the problem still the same. Can I just use me back up CD's and install vista back???The drivers are on your laptop Driver CD...not in Vista.
Sometimes the generic ones work...but it doesn't seem it's the case this time.
Travel to Toshiba's site and enter your model/serial # to find the correct ones...Patio I don't have dreivers CD's on my Lap top. I went to Toshiba site and downloaded the driver  wirless LAN for win 7 (Driver wi fi Atheros) this one solved 2 problems . I am still having problem with one driver missing, my wi fi still not working and when I downloaded the wi fi driver and try to installe it I got the message "Driver_wi_Fi_realtek_0s2010081a_exe is not a valid win32 application"The Atheros driver should have worked ...and possibly is working.
Have you tried to set up your wireless network from scratch in Control Panel ? ?The problem, I am still having a question mark under the NETWORK CONTROLLER. So I guess I have a driver missing which I can not locate it on the Toshiba website???Post a screenshot of Device Manager...http://www.mypicx.com/04252010/computer/
See the link above the first picture is for the device manager when Vista was installed and the second one is the latest one after win7 with a question mark under the network controllerI see no ? in the 2nd one...

I have more or less the same problem as this guy here had:

http://h30434.www3.hp.com/psg/board/message?message.uid=110975

At first I couldn't log in, now I can after 30 minutes of waiting...which doesn't help much as CPU usage is constantly at 100%, so I can't do ANYTHING (but open the Task Manager). Nothing suspicious is opened that uses a lot of CPU.

In Safe Mode I could see that the Consumer IR devices wouldn't load.
While googling I found the above thread, which suggests:

Quote

"You do not have a problem with your IR device and its driver is perfectly fine, what you have a problem with is a Microsoft Vista update published on the 26/08/09 and called KB973879."

However I couldn't find this KB973879 update =/
I tried to uninstall all recent Vista updates, but I couldn't prevent the reinstallation when restarting because I can't open "Windows Update" in Safe Mode somehow.

Help is appreciated a lot =)Open Task Manager to the Processes Tab and sort on the CPU column. Which process is eating the cycles? You mean which one is the process using that much CPU?
They are all normal, one or two fluctuating between 00 and 05, but that's it...I'm not sure how that's possible. If the cpu is at 100%, at least one process has to be churning away.I know =/ I can check again just to be sure, but the first thing I verified was the CPU usage of the processes and they were all normal.
I might be BACK in an hour when Windows finally loaded and I got back in Safe Mode lol.

Do you have any idea if any other update may be causing this? As I said I didn't find KB973879. You sure it's not the "CPU idle process" ? ?Do you mean the "System Idle Process"?
If yes, then no it's not under the list of running processes...Just checking.

You can DLoad and install Process Explorer which will give you a bit more info than Task Manager. The problem was resolved by using the "System Configuration" tool in Control Panel-->ADMINISTRATIVE Tools.  I used the "Diagnostic startup" option and restarted a few times.

I still think it was because of a Vista update and I'm now very reluctant to these "8 important updates" Vista wants me to install again  -.- .

Edit:

False hope, same problem again as I switched on my laptop today.... Quote from: Amlung on October 10, 2009, 07:46:56 AM
Do you mean the "System Idle Process"?
If yes, then no it's not under the list of running processes...
Wait a second. System Idle process HAS to be listed. Now I'm confused. Please do as I suggested above - open task manager to the Processes tab. Sort on the cpu column with highest usage at the to (double-click on the "cpu" title). System Idle Process should be the TOP ITEM you see because it show show highest cpu "usage" (not that it's actually "using" the cpu).

Now, if the cpu starts spiking one of the processes at the top of the list will also spike. Which one is it? i have the same problem with him with the same laptop also....how can i possibly fix this one....regarding consumer ir devices issues?.....any effective advice....because my computer hangs all the time ,,,pls, pls, pls,,,,,im desperate....thanks in advance guys,,,,

Thank you so much for replying. Unfortunately, I have tried all the solutions list on the link you posted, but it still hasn't fixed the problem. I even tried the system restore, but it still hasn't fixed it.  Quote from: bftly on May 09, 2010, 12:23:40 AM

A possible work around until you fix the problem:

C:\test>md newfolder

C:\test>ren newfolder  myfolder

C:\test>dir *folder
Volume in drive C has no label.
 Volume Serial Number is 0652-E41D

 Directory of C:\test

05/09/2010  07:20 PM              myfolder
               0 File(s)              0 bytes
               1 Dir(s)  296,608,641,024 bytes free

C:\test>
p.s. If newfolder has a space  ( new folder ) use quotes  for the ren command:
ren "new folder"  myfolder Quote from: bftly on May 09, 2010, 12:23:40 AM

The steps above could have been more clear, let me clarify:

To ADD to my information above the appdata folder location is located here: C:\users\"YOUR LOGGED IN USER NAME"\Appdata

The easiest way to navigate there would be by double clicking on "My Computer" and then your main hard drive, which is usually C:

Are you there ? Ok.

1) You won't see the folder unless you have hidden folders showing. Here is how to set that:

1.  Open Folder Options by clicking the Start button (or Ctrl-Esc), clicking Control Panel, clicking Appearance and Personalization, and then clicking Folder Options.

2.  Click the View tab.

3.  Under Advanced settings, click Show hidden files and folders, and then click OK.

Changing Folder Permissions

2) Here is how you would grant full control permission to this folder:

1.Right Click on the Folder you wish to change properties on

2.Select “Properties”

3.In the Properties window go to the Security tab and click on Edit.

4.If the your user account is not on the list of users or groups that have permissions defined, you should click on add. Now you need to type the user name or the group of users for which you want to change the permissions.

5.After adding your account, Click Check Names and then click OK.

6.In the Security window, select the user/group you just added and then click in the first check box under Allow which is “Full Control” and then click OK.

This should be a more clear walk through. So, let us know how this works out."

This won't help you but: Why would you want to uninstall SP1? Pre-SP1 Vista had many problems.Yes I am having problems with the service pack...This may help: How to uninstall Windows Vista service packs as a troubleshooting step

What problems are you having?  I'm wondering whether installing SP2, WITHOUT first uninstalling SP1 and then reinstalling SP1, might be a solution to your problems but I can say for sure whether that would hold true.  But, if I were you, I think, if I uninstalled SP1, I would do so with the intention of reinstalling SP1 and then installing SP2.  If you are having problems they CERTAINLY need to be addressed, but uninstalling service packs is rarely a good idea. Solve : Nasty W7 surprise...?

Answer»

Have a PC and a laptop and on both this MORNING I got a warning from MS that I was using counterfit non-genuine W7 software!!!!
I bloody WELL paid for both OS's!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Anyone else who got this sick joke when W7 started up?? Up to yesterday no complaints from MS.... Did you buy the retail version or did it come with new computers?

If you bought the retail version phone MS, and if it came with new computers phone the manufacturer.  They can get it straightened out for you. What type of warning (how did you get it and exactly what did it say)?Normal upstart and before the flowerscreen came up with the usual W7 Welcome, the black screen stayed a bit too long and then the warning came up: Microsoft Message: the system discovered you are running counterfeit software. Please use genuine Microsoft Software....than 2 options: how to obtain genuine software and the other cancel, which I of course used after having TOLD Uncle Billy what I thought of him and his former COMPANY.....in PLAIN Dutch...hahahahahahaha...yesterday nothing was "wrong"...PC and Laptop checked for 3 days ago and no security breaches....so no hackers nor spyware....and the event happened during the start-up sequence with no Internet connection.

Bought the retail UK ENGLISH version(so not the norwegian one...), have the receipt...lol... Quote from: Peterwolfe on May 06, 2010, 09:42:40 AM

Were there any security seals on the package?

I definitely recommend phoning MS though, that's something they can fix for you. Quote from: Peterwolfe on May 06, 2010, 09:45:15 AM

Or that he is pi..off that I only have freeware on this W7......only MS= W7...lol...It's malware.Nope. No Malware. Machines were checked the day before and declared clean and were not used until this event occurred. Even more: 2 of my pals had the same experience.... Solve : MSN kills my internet??

Answer» OKAY so. I have a WINDOWS Vista Compaq laptop. When I first got the COMPUTER, Windows Live Messenger came with it, and worked peachy keen. But a few months into it, MSN stopped WORKING. I would sign in, it would work for around 30 seconds, then it would completely kill my internet connection, and sign me out of MSN. I have HughesNet, which isn't as fast as DSL but it works. I just would like to be able to use my messenger again, without it disconnecting me. Any idea what COULD be wrong, or how to fix it?I would like to recommend you an alternative.

Use Digsby or Pidgin (I think digsby is better) instant messengers. You can use them to chat with all your MSN contact and also Yahoo & Facebook (digsby) ones if you like. They are easy to setup and use and will work much faster then Windows Live Messenger.

Solve : processes?

Answer»

I have 73 processes running is task manager. What ones are safe to end, and can you START it again if needed?
I believe they are slowing down my computer. I"m running vista. Thank's for any helpYou can disable any process you like. If you turn off one that your system needs (like explorer.exe) then just hold down the power button for 7 seconds (faster seconds) and your computer will shut down. Once you boot BACK up that process will start again. Experiment, you can't damage your computer by stopping processes. Quote

Turning off processes is not harmful or dangerous?
Turning off services is but not processes.True, but you can't permanently turn off processes without turning off services.
What would be a reason to turn off processes?I don't know, maybe to SEE if they were needed or not.
But only a very experienced user should attempt stuff like modifying services.

Solve : Computer freezes and won't reboot properly?

Answer»

Hey anyone that is willing to help please do.

I have an acer 5640 desktop on a windows vista OS. yesterday my computer froze after being idle for about 10 minutes. I wasn't ACTUALLY using the computer at the time so i don't know when/how/why the computer froze. The mouse and keyboard were not responding so i POWERED off the computer using the power button. when i went to reboot the computer i got an error message saying that windows was shut down to prevent damage to the computer. I have tried and tried again to get the computer booted up and occasionally it will work but then freeze after maybe about 2 minutes tops (usually it only works for 30 seconds) I have tried to use the computer through safe mode and run chkdsk but the computer will not FUNCTION long enough for the all the files to be downloaded. I also tried using a repair disc and running that first by pressing F12 and the cd will load and  the files will be read but then the computer will freeze before i can actually use the disc. The common error messages i get are "windows did not load properly this could be due to hardware problems... would you like to run windows repair or start windows normally" (in this instance i selected the repair mode but the computer would freeze before anything could happen and all i saw was a black screen) i also get the BSOD and the code i get is stop:0x00000078 (that 8 might be a B i'm not sure) with numerous other codes after it. Occasionally when i try something new i can get the computer to load completely but it will eventually freeze again.

Sorry this is such a long post but please any advice would be great. I would prefer to not have to buy anything or replace the hard drive where all my files would be lost.

Thanks in advance for all your helpCheck your power brick. Could be falling over. If on battery when this has happend, try on full power. Could be battery with an intermittent problem.can you tell me what a power brick is? or explain in more detail what you're talking aboutOops, wrong forum post to wrong post.

Looked at that error code you listed and from what I read, it would be difficult to determine what the cause is.

Could be driver related or something you have installed recently or your Hard disk or even PSU. First things first, try a system restore at a user defined save point or last KNOWN good config. That is the usual process to follow first.

As for the following errors or any others, keep a notepad so you can list them. If you do need to get a new HD, it may still be possible to recover critical stuff that you have.Well I haven't installed anything in the recent past.

I have tried to get the computer to do a system restore but it would freeze before anything could happen. I also tried the last good configuration and got that to boot all the way to the desktop but after using the computer for a while and trying to use chkdsk, the computer froze. When I tried to do last good configuration again, the computer wouldn't load to completion.

During bootup my computer will stop just before the windows logo appears, so it seems like somethings PREVENTING windows from starting up. And sometimes I'll get a message saying that windows was purposely stopped from loading to prevent damage.

Solve : Vista freezes at login screen?

Answer»

I've had this problem for a few day now, tried all manner of things but no luck. When it started I was just using my computer normally, I had MSN, iTunes and Firefox running, when my computer just froze suddenly. After leaving it a few mins I eventually TURNED it off. When it restarted, it came up with the option to go to Windows Startup Repair which it said was recommended, so thats what I did. It eventually restarted, went to the login screen and when I typed in my password it loaded but the screen was just BLACK. I could see bits of the taskbar and my mouse cursor but that was all. I turned it off and back on again and from then on the same thing would happen, except the screen would be COMPLETELY black, none of the taskbar was visible, though the mouse cursor was still there. Now it wont even load the black screen though. I type in password, it comes up with "welcome" and then doesn't change. The mouse cursor is visible and shows the 'loading' icon, HOWEVER I cannot move it. I can't access task manager as I have read elsewhere with people having a SIMILIAR problem, and safe mode does not work. I can however access command prompt from the startup repair utility. I have run dskchk which did not find any errors and only once of the many times I have tried logging in did it come up with an error that said

"The file or directory \Windows\System32\en-US\imageres.dll.mui is corupt and unreadable.

Please run the Chkdsk utility."

However I have run Chkdsk since, which found no errors as mentioned, so I am officially out of ideas. The only option I haven't tried is to reinstall windows, however this would mean I would lose all the data on my laptop, which I would obviously rather not do since I dont have backups of most of it. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks.Go to Start/Run and at the prompt type in sfc /scannow and hit Enter...
Have your XP CD handy as it will ask for it.
Let it COMPLETE...remove the CD and re-boot.Thanks for your reply, however I can't access the start menu as I can't get passed the welcome screen.. In addition, I don't have a windows CD as it was pre-installed on the laptop when I bought it.Will it boot to safemode ? ?
Repeatedly tap F8 when the machine is started and before you see the Windows splash screen...Before when I tried to start in safe mode, the login screen would come up however the screen would begin to flash between login sceen and a black screen (the screen flashes black but it is still on, as I have a crack in my screen so can tell when the backlight is on) and trying to type the password when this was happening didn't work.

I have just tied it again after you asked however, and this did not happen, it allowed me to enter my password, but it just went to a black screen... I can see and move the mouse cursor, but the screen is black. I have tried ctrl + alt + del/esc but neither are working, and right-clicking the mouse also does nothing... I would see if you can locate and borrow a Vista CD to do a Repair Install...
With a Repair Install if done corrrect all your data and apps are intact.

If you can't find one then i'm afraid you would need to hook up the drive as a slave on another working machine...retrieve your data and do a clean install of Vista.Well hopefully I can find another way, otherwise i'll have to try that. I take it I will need some kind of adapter to use my hard drive from my other laptop as a slave drive? Thanks for your help.

About 8 Bucks at any PC store...
Laptop 2.5" HDD to IDE connector. Allows you to connect that drive to any working desktop machine. What about connecting it to another laptop? As I don't have a desktop PC I can use. I saw on youtube a video where someone used the casing for an external harddrive (which I do have) and connecting it to that using the adapter you mentioned above. Is that what I will have to do as well I take it? Yes...if the external case is built for regular size HDD's...One more question, the latop that is broken is running windows Vista, however the one im using now is XP SP3, will that cause any problems or will it not matter? No.
It won't matter...XP will see the Vista data fine.

Solve : Windows 7 security?

Answer»

Hi, I recently moved from Xp to win 7 32bit home premium. Because I missed the move to vista first I found win7 a little daunting at first, but I now believe it is definately a move upwards from xp, and it flies on my newly built machine. 2 things I hate about 7 is the UAC which ive disabled, I READ it is better than vista, god that must have been awful. The SECOND thing I want some help with is how to make my user account which is supposed to have admin priveliges have full access to EVERYTHING on my computer. An example is if I want to view some pictures in irfanview it gives an error saying I dont have admin priveliges. To me that is a red rag to a bull, its my machine, I want it do do what I want and when I want it. I have looke at folder properties and security and it says that everyone has full access. Sorry but my question is: IS there a way to give my account full control over everything, in other words no security for anybody who uses this machine. Anybody using this machine does so with my consent and as such are fully trusted. Can I turn security off somehow?

Sorry I forgot to mention i installed take ownership

Not really. I've run into ownership anomalies with Windows 7 that I've never seen on other OS's. It can happen for some reason. The subinacl tool will make sure all pertinent registry hives & keys have proper ownership REGISTRATION. Quote from: Allan on May 06, 2010, 09:37:56 AM

Thanks Allan
I read with interest on the subinacl link that a lot of ANGST seems to occur when using homegroup, makes me curious because I have this win7 machine networked with about half a dozen xp machines which I couldnt do with homegroup, I just simply configured the network as per the older xp machines. I will report back after ive TRIED subinacl, I would do it now but wish to do complete backup before I do. I have previously tried to do a system restore but it failed due to an error with a win file?

What i did notice is the subinacl msi is written for win 2000 and xp???

Solve : Outlook 2010?

Answer»

I have been using outlook 2007 business contact manager on my computer and not my server without any problems for awhile now and have decided to upgrade. Before I upgraded I had exported all my contacts and saved them on my computer so I could import them back in once I have finished upgrading. I have run into some problems now that I have upgrade I have NOTICED that I must run business contact manager 2010 on a server I was wondering if there was any WAY around this like 2007? and I was wondering how hard it is to install it on the a server?

I was also wondering if anyone also knew if there was a add on which would allow me to have multiple contacts under one contact for ex. under the COMPANY Safeway I would like to use Safeway as the contact name and list the manager and assistant managers all under that contact. I would recommend that you switch to Mozilla Thunderbird. I did and it was so much better then Outlook and it was free and has many add ons available. The only problem with that would be we are CURRENTLY RUNNING our company email through outlook which is all setup on our server already with multiple users... I am not sure if thunderbird is capable of taking that over but I could be wrong...I would like to stay with outlook if it is possible

Solve : Can SuperAntispyware run all t he time??

Answer»

Hi -
I have VISTA Home Basic  32 bit.  I have Avast Anti Virus which runs all the time and keeps virus out of my computer (at least I have never had one that I know of).  I have SuperAntispyware listed as one of my programs.  As far as I know I have to RUN it to get rid of spyware.  Is there a way for it to run all the time so that spyware will be kept out of my computer as avast Antivirus does for virus?  I hope I have made clear what I want to do.
Thanks for your time.   BobYes, but only the paid version can run resident. Although I have the paid version I do not KEEP it resdident - I only run it once a month (along with MalwareBytes) to scan. I keep my AV (Kaspersky) resident at all times. Keep an eye out for evilfantasy....sometimes he RAFFLES a lifetime key for the pro version.
He hasn't had one with a while though.Allan -
Thank you for your reply.  I  have the professional SuperAntispyware which I run about once a week.  I general get 100 plus tracking cookies.  I guess I am doing OK but I was just checking.   Thanks   BOB  You're welcome Bob. And I'm not saying you should not keep it resident, just that I don't feel the need to do so.

i was wonderen if some 1 out there might have any other way or ideals ,thanks in advance alotUnless you are experienced with computers I would advise you not to flash your BIOS I assume that's what your trying to do.You could do unrepairable damage. If you MUST flash the BIOS take it to a reputable engineer who knows what they are doing. I am an engineer and have had so many units in where customers have done what you are trying to do.
If you are just trying to update the software that should not be a problem. Download the zip files into a folder and open them find the install files on each and  CLICK them and follow the instructions. Just make sure you have the right download for your model

Good LuckAre you sure you got the right update? To me f.52a suggests a fith gen BIOS. Seriously agree with mrrigga, take to a repair shop. One bad flash can render your mobo inopperable

Solve : Folders missing?

Answer»

Few days ago i used a USB DRIVE and after that all my folders have turned into .exe files and not opening by double clicking although i can open them from run box and from address bar. When i double click on them to open i get message its not a valid Win32 application. Surprisingly all my C drive folders are opening properly. I posted this issue in the Computer viruses and spyware forum and on guidance from the specialist all the threats and viruses have been removed  and my system is clean now and all the folders of the root directory are back but folders from the sub-directory are still missing. I have been told to post the issue in this forum so please suggest what needs to be done. Thanks

[RECOVERING disk space - old attachment deleted by admin]               Legend, some folders or files with .exe does not mean it can run or be open by just clicking on it. Which means Windows cannot open or read such files. As you can see from the properties, the file does'nt seem to have or contain anything base on the size. I'm weary though with that year 2020... MORE INFORMATION PLZ.Hi,
It seems your machine is been attacked by virus and virus has renamed most of the real folder (Containing Data) and has hide them.

To find your folders open My Computer:
1). Goto "Tools" and select "Folder Options"
2). Now select "Show all hidden files and folders" under the available list.
3). Click on "Apply" and then click on "OK".

This will show you all hidden folders, however you need to remove the virus. I would like to suggest you to download MalwareBytes from below link:

http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php

Install it and run to check and remove MALWARE from your computer...

**Please reply with the results.**
Thanks for the reply. Yes my system was infected by virus and virus has renamed most of the real folder (Containing Data) and has hide them and i have removed all the threats from my system by using various tools including MALWAREBYTE on the guidance of a specialist from virus removal forum.

However i am not able to view my folders back. The Show all hidden files and folders option is not working for hidden folders. Even a system RESTORE is not working. If i create a new folder i can hide and view it back through Show all hidden files and folders but it is not working on old folders.

I can view my hidden folders through external applications such as total commander but i dont know how to view them back on windows explorer without reinstalling windows 7.Have you solved the folders missing? Have you tried system restoration? You may have installed a new program that made it change some or most of your data. I have experienced some changes in my folders when i installed musicbox. And all my music files change to its type. But they still are usable. Or your antivirus may be out-of-date. Or your antivirus settings may be a conflict to your OS.

Solve : Core i7 overclock?

Answer»

My computer came with a stock speed core i7 920. It also came with an Intel Extreme Tuning program which claims it can auto-clock my processor to a safe speed. The OPTION I am looking at specifically says: "Staying within manufacturer's limits".

My question is: Will I notice a difference in performance when overclocking, and will it really be safe to overclock the processor? (I want this rig to last for at least five years, hopefully more...)Why the heck anyone would want to attempt overclocking 1 of the fastest CPU's on the market is beyond me...
That pretty much disqualifies me from this.Core i7 920 is only 2.66 GHZ. I don't know about you, but compared to the core i7-980X with 3.33 GHZ, that is pretty paltry in comparison. The reason I want to know about overclocking is because my system is running pretty cool, and I want the most performance while still having a long lifespan. Quote from: you878 on May 02, 2010, 06:22:03 PM

that is pretty paltry in comparison.

You SOUND like a teen boy. You won't notice much difference. Overclocking won't make your RAM, hard drive or display card any faster.

I'll differ from the crowd and say go for it. If you ever use heavy CPU intensive apps, such as video renderers, some games, etc., then you certainly COULD see a benefit. It's free performance, and if you know what you're doing, it's a fairly quick process.

1) Read-up and understand what you are doing. You should be able to do this manually or not at all. Understand the risk. Make sure you have sufficient cooling.
2) I would recommend against voltage increases. If at all, do an overclock using the stock voltage. Voltage increases can shorten the life of the CPU.
3) IntelBurnTest is the best thing I know to check that your max temps will always be within a safe range. If you don't have adequate cooling and if you don't know what your safe range is, then you should repeat #1. Quote from: you878 on May 02, 2010, 03:34:47 PM

Overclocking is a great way to reach this goal.

If you want a 3.33Ghz i7, BUY a 3.33 Ghz i7.

And don't believe the nonsense that the longer you have a CPU overclocked, the more "used to" being overclocked it becomes. While it's logical to say that for a sentient entity last time a checked a CPU was not sentient and it doesn't get "used" to being overclocked, and the chance of failure doesn't decrease the longer it's overclocked, it increases.

The only reason Overclocking is even possible is because the CPU(and, for GPU overclocking, the GPU) chips are made in batches- and they test a select sample of processors from that batch to determine the maximum stable speed. If you get a chip that they used in the test overclocking in any usable amount will fail and cause stability problems and even processor failure in a rather short time. If you're not unlucky and got a processor that wasn't tested, there is a chance it can handle the new specifications. But the chances go down considerably the higher you overclock, after all, the samples they tested in that batch could only work properly at a given speed, so the other processors in the batch aren't going to differ by much.Adding to gregory's helpful post:

An overclocking program?  Stay away from those.

Quote

In some situations, yes.  In others, no.

Quote
and will it really be safe to overclock the processor?
If you ensure you know what you are doing and you stay within manufacturer's guidelines regarding voltages and temperatures, yes.

Before you begin overclocking, my golden rule is "never CHANGE anything unless you know exactly what it does, what else it affects, and what to set it to".  If you don't know, research it, never change things you are at all unsure about.  Research on the web first, and then ask someone that knows.  I'm a lot more cautious than most when it comes to overclocking so you will get different advice from others.
No offence to anyone posting in this thread, or the forum in general, but overclocking tends to be frowned upon by many (not myself) here, for various reasons, so you may not find this forum all that much help to be honest.
Do feel free to ask for help with it though once you have researched further, I for one will be happy to help and there are others around too, such as gregory.Burn it up i say....go for the Gusto... Quote from: BC_Programmer on May 03, 2010, 11:13:55 AM
Overclocking is a great way to <not> reach this goal.
I fully agree with BC. Overclocking can (no will but can) decrease the lifespan of your CPU significantly. Maybe so it won't last 5 years. But you i7 should still be a decent speed CPU in 5 years anyway. My current PC has a Pentium 4 CPU from 2005 and it still preforms well. Quote
Intel Extreme Tuning program which claims it can auto-clock my processor to a safe speed.
Can you identify this program?
Are you sure it recommends overclocking? One place says it  does some things to make it possible to overclock with lessor chance of something going real ad. Now that is not same as saying  overclocking is safe.

It is kind of like the radar detector some people used to put in their automobiles. Did not make speeding safer, just less likely to get caught.
technically, it is hard to argue angainst any of the above. Would add one thing about temps and ways to minimise as possible these operating temps. Airflow. Get this right, and you aid yourself in any type of build. In an OC'ed Rig, this is one of the things that is first on the list before Case choice.

Anyway, not convinced that you are comfy with the idea of overclocking. That Intel app would only add a modest OC I would think. If you want to join the Dark Arts, BIOS OC is the way. Just an opinion here. Would hate to see you fry an I7.

Solve : Steam on Vista X64?

Answer»

Hi. I downloaded a copy of FM2010 after having bought a boxed version. Thought I would try that INSTALL method over the DVD. This however was after I experianced problems with the patching system.

The thing is though, I ultimately decided to stick with the boxed ver. Since then though, the load time of Vista's SYS tray has increased from the GUI portion of the boot. Getting past the POST is not a problem but still slower after password logon. Has Steam corrupted SOMETHING at any level or what else could be the cause? Any ideas. ThanxYou can try running msconfig (start, run, msconfig, enter) Try disabling the steam items from start-up and services tab, and see if your log-on is then quicker.

A combination of disabling different options should help you discover which ones are causing it to slow downBlimey, did not know I posted this. Must have a had a few.

I determined that Steam had caused some lag (for want of a better term) so I did end the process. That helpled. Thing is that Messenger appeared to do the same. Updated that and it loads to the logon screen quicker.

However, something is still causing the systray to kind of half stall, then reignite and vroom vroom if you know what I mean. NEXT target was AVG. I disconnected my Hub and turned off WiFi function on reboot and no real tangible difference on the eye or clock. I'm thinking that something is resident that is looping commands or something, I have a Ram problem or Vista 64 is slow because it just happens to be slow on my lappy.

THANX for the reply BTW.DLoad install and run StartupCPL from Mike Lin...
It will give you a comprehensive list of all startup items and background apps...

Don't disable anything if you don't know what it is.
The app is low on resources and will add a Startup icon to Control Panel where it xan be launched from...Your steam is updating your game...

Downloaded game will already be mostly updated and just need patches.

Boxed Games will need way more updating.

Steam defaults to annoyingly automatic updating, if it's a huge update and you have a slow connection it will seem to freeze after logging in. You should disable steam from running at startup as this can be fustrating if doing other stuff or using the net as well.

Leave it running to update when no one else is using the net after a while it should display a percent progress bar, ensure it fully updates the game before attempting to play.

If you think the game is corrupted, right-click the game in steam, check and verify this game. It will re-download any corrupted files.

If you think steam is corrupted:
Exit Steam
Open a ‘Command Prompt’ (cmd.exe if you are using ‘Run…’ from the start menu)
Run: “c:\Program Files\Steam\bin\SteamService.exe” /repair
Note: Change “c:\Program Files” to wherever you have steam installed. For a 64 bit OS the default would be: “c:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\bin\SteamService.exe” /repair
Start Steam

Note:
You can also simply delete most the files and it will redownload them all again.

Solve : Should I upgrade to Windows 7??

Answer»

My current desktop is a Dell Vostro 200 running Windows Vista Home Basic SP2 32-bit, with an Intel Pentium Dual CPU E2160 1.80GHz, 2.99GB RAM, and a Intel G33/G31 Express Chipset Family GRAPHICS card.

Should I UPGRADE to Windows 7? I ran the upgrade advisor, and it said I was good to go, but I still wanted to know if it's a good idea to go up to Windows 7, or stick with Vista, based on my computer's specifications. Personal choice...
Hard to say.Vista and 7 have pretty much the same system requirements, so your hardware won't make a difference. Windows 7 does run a bit faster especially on older hardware but yours is not old at all. Basically you have to decide whether or not it is worth it to pay to get 7 or not. Seven is only an improved Vista. That said, if you happy with Vista I would not recommend upgrading to 7, all you would gain is a new taskbar and a bit faster system. Quote from: Cityscape on May 04, 2010, 11:55:08 PM

all you would gain is a new taskbar and a bit faster system.
And jumplists, and a better windows search, better touch, speech, and handwriting recognition, built in support for Virtual Hard disks (which is useful if you use XP Mode), faster BOOT time, better performance in multi-core processors, kernel improvements, improved support for themes, "library" Virtual folders, progress bars and overlay icons on application buttons on the taskbar (something that I found rather interesting), storage space bars that are only shown for hard disks in Vista are now shown for removable drives as well, redesigned notification area, Aero Peek, Snap, and Shake, new Windows key shortcuts for the new window management functions, MUCH improved font management, faster Desktop Window Manager, support for 30-bit and 48-bit colour depths, DPI settings are per-user rather then per-machine, better superfetch and readyboost, increased performance with SSDs, built in support for biometrics (no more crappy manufacturer applets for those), improved applets, ISO burning built into the OS, Applications crashing twice causes 7 to automatically try to apply a shim, and if that fails it automatically asks questions about the programs desired environment, ability to use windows search to search for text in TIFF files (for scanned documents) Windows XP Mode, and so on.

Aside from that though, there really is no good reason.

I have used desktop Windows of each version since Windows 3.1 came out in 1992 and I think Windows 7 is the best yet. It is much more than Vista with the bugs taken out.

That is pretty much what it is. I was a better tester and I like a few of the new features but a lot of the stuff BC mention may not be needed or wanted by the average Joe. I would say it's an improved Vista with bugs removed a some new features added.

Yet you don't remember how to spell "beta"? The Windows 7 kernel has undergone significant changes, including major scalability improvements; the user interface has been revamped and the initial desktop experience is completely different; the fundamental Windows applications have a different look and feel. Windows 7 is another version further on from Vista.

Wow, major typo. I can't believe I did that.

The kernel difference is only .1, Vista is 6.0 and Seven is 6.1. Fair enough though. I do agree that Win7 is like no other Windows operating system, and I've used everything since 3.1. The user interface has had HUGE improvements. Still I don't think its worth (to me) $100+ upgrade. Quote from: Cityscape on May 05, 2010, 02:10:01 PM

what are you talking about? that's the windows version number. has very little to do with kernel changes.

Windows 3.1 had a good portion of it's kernel and user mode code rewritten to take advantage of the fact that Real mode was no LONGER supported, compared to 3.0. But it still was just windows 3.1, not windows 4.

Additionally, MS released a Kernel update package for Windows 95 that introduced changes to much of the kernel- and it didn't change the version number at all.

What about windows updates? they change portions of built-in drivers and kernel code sometimes. should updates change the version number of the system?

Solve : Vista Product Key - OEM for OEM?

Answer»

If I install an OEM version of Vista I purchased, can the OEM PRODUCT Key that came with the machine be used for activation?

Thanks all.Seems like a loaded question...

If the OEM install DVD / CDs match... technically yes.

Which terms if any, of the EULA might be violated I can't say, and you could also end up with a Microsoft piracy alert.

Often machines that come with an OEM preinstall of an operating system offer replacement disks for a fraction of the cost. I would make enquiries with the PC manufacturer first, I've heard of restore disks being offered for as little as $5.

If you want to use the key from one machine to install the OEM OS and use on another machine would be a definite breach of the agreement. I'll be more specific. I'm talking about using a legally purchased System Builder OEM disc with a Manufacturer OEM(Dell, HP, etc.) product key.

Thanks. The key is what gives Ownership...you can use any CD to install no matter where it came from...Yes, that sounds right. It is the product key that is sure proof of ownership.
Let's review what happened here. Was it something like the following?

Number 1.  A user somehow acquired a used computer made by one of the major manufacturers. It has a product key on the back panel that indicates it had a Vista installation .

Number 2.  There was no installation DVD in the transaction of the computer to the new owner.

Number 3. the new owner buys a  copy of the DVD used to install the OS on this brand of computer. He uses the given product key and everything is okay.

WAIT! What did he say?
Purchased System Builder OEM disc.

Nor sure. You may have to call Microsoft.

Edit: Here is a link. http://oem.microsoft.com/
Search for 'System Builder'
Results vary by region.

Man, I really hate having to call somebody.

The user/owner of the machine is someone I know who needs a fresh install, however, as Geek-9pm guessed, does not have the disc that came with the pre-owned machine. The System Builder copy is actually mine. To me, as long as I use their product key, not mine, and the versions are the same, then this is "morally" correct. It was just a matter of --technically can this be done. Microsoft has been far from simple, when it comes to product KEYS and the 47 versions of each Windows release. The phone call ...if needed at all should be no more than 2-3 minutes...
Go ahead with the install you may not even need it.....so it works, couldn't use online activation, had to use the automated phone system thingy. No big deal.

Solve : How do I shrink Flash videos onto a dvd to watch on tv??

After reading over your question very carefully it becomes clear that the key is to hear is the ABILITY to play the DVD on a standard player.
Check the documentation on your DVD player and see what formats are permitted. If the documentation is not clear, or if you wish to have it work on almost any DVD player, then the only option is to create a DVD movie.
In general, these are the steps you would have to take asphalt:
1. Convert the files to a format that is usual by your movie editor.
2. Place the files into a new folder. If necessary do some edits on the files.
3. Using a suitable DVD movie maker program and all the files that you can fit into a standard DVD and start the burn process.

The key issue here is this, a DVD movie has to be burnt all at once. There is no effective way to burn different portions and then go back and add something else. It just doesn't work that way.
There are a number of really good programs out there that will burn a collection of videos to a DVD as a movie that is broken into segments. But they are all burnt at the same time. Perhaps some others here can make recommendations as to their favorite file format CONVERSION programs and DVD movie burner programs.
Thank you all for your help

The videos I want are from youtube. I'd really like to watch my fav series from my DVD player than sitting in front of the computer, that's what started all of this. I've gotten the videos onto a DVD, and it works in my DVD player, but the quality is crap; I can barely see the picture. The picture is so stretched it's blurry. I have to convert the video from Flash to WMV with RealPlayer Converter to burn it to a DVD using Windows Movie Maker (to string the pieces together)and Windows Media Center(to burn it). This takes me hours. I've tried converting the video to different formats, but they won't work with the programs I've got. Ideally I'd like to keep the videos as Flash, maybe the quality would be better, but I can't burn it to a disk. I also want to be able to fit the 180 min worth. Is this even possible, or have I just been wasting my time?Youtube videos are low resolution and will look really bad on a TV, especially a large screen one.

Is there nothing I can do to fix it, to improve the quality, or shrink the video size on the tv? That's the only place I can get the videos in english...There is nothing you can do to improve the quality of Youtube videos, well maybe if you bought a super computer and spent a lot of time and effort working on them.  They pretty much are what they are.  Maybe over time they will improve.Until then..

YouTube is starting to add various resolutions on the videos.

The thing to watch is that resolution is not being reduced by the conversion programs.

DVD is pretty much an MPEG-2 format, so file sizes are large. Most of my digitized Hollywood movies from VHS tapes are over the 4.7 GB size LIMIT for single layer DVDs, so for that reason I have switched to a Blu-Ray player that does H.264. This gets me file sizes anywhere from 1/4 to 1/2 the size of the original MPEG-2 file. Quote

Yup. Lotsa H.264 movies on 1 disk. Even without blu-ray I can get 10 to 12 MPEG-4 (DivX) encoded movies on a DVDR-DL disk; especially if I use mp3 audio. Many DVD players these days costing $20-$30 can play these. Mine even has a USB socket for a pen drive, so no burning required.

Sorry I wasn't clear.

I take the ~8GB, 2 hour MPEG-2 file from my VHS digitizer and run it through Handbrake to produce a ~3GB H.264 file.

I don't have a Blu-Ray burner, so I use another program to prep a micro-SD card for play on a Blu-Ray player.

Solve : Typing text and jumping away?

Answer»

I have Vista on my computer. When I am typing text it will suddenly jump to another section of the page and enter part of SOMETHING I have typed. It will even enter it in the same font that previous text in that area has used. How can I fix that?First step is to rule out malware. Run a full scan on your system with both your anti virus utility and MalwareBytes.Well to rule out the simple first...

If using a wireless mouse and/or keyboard, check the batteries. When the batteries run low, this causes the mouse pointer to act erratic and the keyboard to lose connection. It fails slowly on some however, so can be really annoying, jumpy and your questioning what's wrong at first.

If using a laptop ensure your palms are hovering the mouse touchpad while typing.
I know it sounds stupid, but easy to do and overlook, lots of people do it. You could use FreezeTouch to prevent this:
http://code.google.com/p/touchfreeze/downloads/list

Now if it's not the simple things - are you using an USB or PS/2 keyboard and mouse. Is it wired or wireless?

Are the drivers (Microsoft so helpfully picked with it's plug n pray feature) incompatible with the device?

Are you using sticky keys or keyboard shortcuts?

Rule out some of the basic, then you can freak out about malware like Allan suggests. Quote from: irted11 on April 29, 2010, 11:40:59 AM

Are you using a word processor when the strange MOVEMENT of text occurs?  Do you use MS Word  or notepad?
How many programs are using ram?  Do you have enough free ram?  Look at your Task Manager

Try a different word processor or compose an email with your email program.  The problem might be only one program.  Uninstall that program and then  reinstall a new copy of the program.

Also, Clean your machine with ccleaner or similar programs.

Good luckSomething like his behavior also happens when entering text into a blog or forum like this one. The browser can make  the page refresh and lose your place in the document. Especially if you are on low RESOLUTION and you have the zoom SET for large text. Happens to me all the time.  Quote from: irted11 on April 29, 2010, 11:40:59 AM

Take your hand off the Touchpad.

Cause:
This issue could be caused by any of the below possibilities.

Touching the touchpad without realizing it
Driver related issue
Dirty touchpad
Bad hardware
Tip: Some laptops may have a button around the touchpad or a icon in the Systray that enables you to temporarily disable the touchpad.

I'm new to Win 7 and I have discovered that our login may indicate we have System Administrator privileges but many tasks require we become the System Administrator.

One way to assume the role of System Administrator is:

CLICK start, All Programs, right click the Command Prompt icon and choose the System Administrator role.

Good Luck
p.s. I'm sure there are other methodsOK, you need to enable the admin account.

Go to start and type cmd. Right click on cmd (the result) and click Run as administrator (ironically). Click continue.
Then type this command as it is typed (caps and everything):
net users enable Administrator
Then hit enter, log out and into the Admin account (the new one) and voila! There you go.

-S1L3NTSN1P3R-

P.S. If you are asked for a p/w I have another solution.the answer is PRETTY close to what Billrich said- start the program as an administrator (right-click and choose "Run as Administrator") Quote from: tamra747 on April 25, 2010, 07:43:59 AM

Even though when your account was created and you were given Administrator Privileges, You must choose the role of System Administrator to run certain programs.

One method to choose the role of System Administrator is:

Click start, All Programs, Accessories, right click the Command Prompt and choose run as System Administrator.

If you don't mind losing all data and have the original Vista disc just boot to it, format, and reinstall. Quote from: pinkado on April 07, 2010, 06:22:16 AM

Have you LOST a password?Get a Linux CD e.g Ubuntu and boot into it but don't install it (run Ubuntu of the disc.) You should be able to access your hardrive through Ubuntu, back up all the files to an external hardrive or NEW partition. Now get the OS you wish to permanently run (preferably a Windows OS.) Run and install your desired OS and when installing make sure you format the hardrive that had the information that you have already backed up (most likely the C: drive.) Boom! You have a working laptop that you can log into.Tried dowloading and making Ultimate Boot CD? It has a p/w resetter.

Solve : CPU change?

Answer»

I was cheap and bought HP with E-5300 Intel chip. Now ,becouse I want to do High definition video additing i think i need to apgrade to faster chip. How high can i go whith this on original motherboard and power supply? Can i install new I7 quad core chip ?Any  compatability issues will be?I need 3,0GHz or better,do I need Quad core or Dual core is enough?Budget and which MBoard this actually is would DETERMINE that...
iNtel socket 775 chips go from $350.00 down...depending on if the board supports them. How and were can i get this information. If i find out what matherboard i have how to find if that spicific chip will be compatable with it?Your current CPU is a socket 775...
Newegg for example shows 24 of them...
See Here...

You would still have to check the MBoard specs...What if to replace motherboard to new H55HC motherboard with i5 -661 chip.would that work?Would i need to replace something else with that exchange?Sure that would work...you could re-use all existing components.
Only ONE that comes to mind may be your power supply...how many watts is it rated at ?I don`t know. This is relatively new computor, about 6 month old.I will definetly LOOK a little later tonight.Thanks.You came up with the ideas...i'm just answering inqueries...My power supply is 300w,but i m going to install blu ray drive to burn blu ray dvd.Do you think new chip will INCREASE power consumption?may be not significant? What happens  if power supply will be over loaded? Will it burn?Or slow working? You'd be better off just buying a whole new computer. The cost of a new motherboard and cpu and psu and optical drive would probably be as much if not more than a new computer. Plus you have the added comfort of knowing that all of the parts are compatible and work properly. But, if you would like to build your own then we can help you out with that too.thanks a lot.A new machine with a 300W PSU ? ?

What's the model # of this PC ? ?My Shuttle has a 300w psu, but then it is a mini-pc

It`s Hp 6250 I think ,if i remember correctly. But it is 300W LiteOn.Isit too small?how much power consumption of Blu ray burner?I could not find that.Well,450W PSU is not expensive(20-40 bucks). If you are planning on running a Quad Core chip and a Bluray burner you should get at least 500w as it will give you some extra headroom. Also avoid cheap brand ones as they are not as RELIABLE or efficient.

Solve : 0x000000c2?

Hi, I recently was checking my computer's reliability monitor and I noticed there was one windows failure listed... this was listed under 'Failure Detail' : 0x00000c2 (0x000000b, 0x873b4800,0x00020004, 0x873b4818)  I don't know what this means, and as I wasn't around at the time I don't know if I got a Blue Screen Of Death or not. It also says the OS stopped working. Three times that day the computer did not shut down properly... This was on the 19th, by the way.

I am running Windows Vista Home Premium,32 bit,  service pack 1, 1917MB Ram, Intel Premium DUAL CPU E2180 2.00GHz

I've attached a JPG to show you the screen I am describing.. (don't worry about the application failures- all the same program, recently removed..., and the install failures are all one particular  windows update)  So, I was wondering what this was. It isn't a problem at the moment, but I just need to put my mind at ease in case it was something serious.

Thanks in advance.

Stop 0xC2 or BAD_POOL_CALLER
The Stop 0xC2 message indicates that a kernel-mode process or driver incorrectly attempted to perform memory operations in the following ways:
• By allocating a memory pool size of zero bytes.
• By allocating a memory pool that does not exist.
• By attempting to free a memory pool that is already free.
• By allocating or freeing a memory pool at an IRQL that was too high.  This Stop message is typically due to a faulty driver or software.
Possible Resolutions:
• A Stop 0xC2 messages might occur after installing a faulty device driver, system service, or firmware. If a Stop message lists a driver by name, disable, remove, or roll back the driver to correct the problem. If disabling or removing drivers resolves the issues, contact the manufacturer about a possible update. Using updated software is especially important for multimedia applications, antivirus scanners, DVD playback, and CD mastering tools.
• A Stop 0xC2 messages might also be due to failing or defective hardware. If a Stop message points to a category of devices (such as disk controllers, for example), try removing or replacing the hardware to determine if it is causing the problem.
• If you encounter a Stop 0xC2 message while upgrading to Windows XP, the problem might be due to an INCOMPATIBLE driver, system service, VIRUS scanner, or BACKUP. To avoid problems while upgrading, simplify your hardware configuration and remove all third-party device drivers and system services (including virus scanners) prior to running setup. After you have successfully installed Windows XP, contact the hardware manufacturer to obtain compatible updates.

Solve : freezing, heating up, ram problems?

Answer»

I'm having all sorts of miscellaneous problems with my toshiba laptop (satellite a305), and I can't put my finger on the source. I've solved some of the problems, of which I don't now whether some were COINCIDENCES or part of the same whole. For example, I have a C: drive and a D: drive. My C: drive had a massive amount of occupied space that I knew I wasn't using. I traced the problem to a Vuze file on the C: drive that had 40GB+ of, absolutely nothing basically. Add to that the FACT that I set my Vuze downloads to drive D: (I uninstalled, erased this, and re-installed). To a lesser degree this had happened to me with this program, but it all coincides with some problems I haven't solved yet.

The latters are varied. The most symptomatic problem I'm having is with winamp. It opens usually after several tries. Sometimes it crashes and I'm NOTIFIED, sometimes it just doesn't open. When the second happens, it's the most troubling. On the task manager, the program doesn't run on applications, but it continues to run on processes (using from 50%, to 100% of the CPU. Certainly 100% if I try to open it more than once). The program also crashes frequently after it's open. I had to look into it to find out this was the reason my computer continued to crash so many times.

Other than that the computer is slow in general. The explorer freezing, etc. (and consider I haven't been running that many things lately, like games, or DVD's, and the few times I've done it it can get very, very slow, eventually crashing). The one thing I've noticed is that the RAM, on the task manager, shows to be using 1.30GB, give or take, without anything running. I have 3GB of RAM. I don't know if that's what Windows Vista uses commonly, but it just doesn't sound right.

Help. PLEASE.

*I forgot to add that the computer is heating up a Lot (heating up meaning to the point that it shuts off). I have a stand fan next to the laptop, at full speed. I don't know if it's hot in my room. But this didn't happen so often. To me, this seems like a RAM/Cooling problem? Try running a RAM test by using Windows Memory Diagnostics (after the Toshiba screen, but before Windows starts booting) hit F8, Esc, TAB, enter. You should see the tool on a blue screen running. Let me know if it finds errors. Let it run for a couple of passes on Extended mode. Use F10 to change these options. How many old topics are you going to revive ? ?

Solve : Best remote computer access software?

Answer»

Hi
I want to start accessing my home computer from my laptop. Does anyone know what the best software out there is and what  the security risks are with using this kind of software? Thanks for any help.
Before we could even begin to make a recommendation we will NEED more information.I don't know what the "best" one is, but LogMeIn is good.  I like Crossloop.

I don't know what the "best" one is, but LogMeIn is good.

I also like logmein. To add to the suggestions above, I quite like UltraVNC.I'll no doubt get shot down by others for this, but if you are running either windows Xp Pro, Vista Business,Ultimate or Win 7 Pro/ultimate. Then i WOULD use the remote desktop software that is inbuilt and therefore free. This would inevitably REQUIRE you to setup port forwarding on your router mind.I'm using windows 7 64bit. with comcast as internet provider on a gaming computer if that matters. Then why not just set up an encrypted VPN?

The link that I provided is by no means the only option available, in fact there may be more software available that will work better for your purposes.  I only include it as an option. TeamViewer is by far the best.Hi,
There are different Desktop Remote Accessing softwares which have encryption enabled, few of them are:
1). Team Viewer.
2). VNC.
3). NTR Connect.
4). Any Place Control.
5). DameWare.

All the softwares have different features and facilities available. Please check them according to your comfort and need.
