Solve : No reaction from my computer? |
|
Answer» The computer is a Toshiba Satellite A205 running with Vista. It is roughly 14 months old. Too long. Explain to me how to execute this process. Is it Hard Drive related or is something wrong with Vista? And yes, I do believe I have the Vista CD. Quote from: MikeySocal8 on July 25, 2008, 04:26:17 PM Quote from: drmsucks on July 25, 2008, 04:18:38 PMToo long. To re-seat memory, check your manual. From what you have said, I don't see any reason to suspect the hdd. Do you think that the problem may be the hdd? If so, why? If you have a true (not an OEM Recovery Disk) Vista disk, you can try a repair install of Vista. This will MOST LIKELY leave your programs and data files INTACT. If you only have the OEM Recovery disk, you can do a 'destructive' re-install which will completely overwrite all files on the hdd and 'restore' your computer to the way it was when you purchased it. Did I miss something? Quote from: MikeySocal8 on July 25, 2008, 05:18:56 PM
I messed up - check now! Quote from: drmsucks on July 25, 2008, 05:14:32 PM To re-seat memory, check your manual. I tried the disk that came with the computer in order to restore the original settings. It loaded the files, went through the starup menu, and the screen went black. When this first started, my computer froze while I was USING it. I restarted it and after the Toshiba screen, the screen went black and read something about a "disk error." After I RAN the disk in order to restore the default settings, I stopped getting the disk error, but I now get a black screen with nothing on it. Quote from: MikeySocal8 on July 25, 2008, 05:35:45 PM Quote from: drmsucks on July 25, 2008, 05:14:32 PMTo re-seat memory, check your manual. Okay - I was hoping to give you choices and have you decide what you wanted to do. Sounds like you have the OEM Recovery Disk, and want to restore the computer to its original condition, right? This procedure WILL WIPE OUT ALL OF YOUR DATA AND PROGRAMS. You'll need to set the computer to boot from the DVD. Immediately after you re-boot, look for a message about boot order and immediately press the indicated key (might be F10 on your machine). Set the DVD as the first boot device. Let it boot from the DVD and follow the instructions. You may want to visit Toshiba's website and read about Recovery before you start. Let us know how you make out. |

Solve : After SP1 Install,Vista No longer Recognizes HP LaserJet III thru USB Connection? |
|
Answer» 20 years ago, I bought a LaserJet III printer, which has always been my primary and most reliable printer. A year ago, I bought a new PC, which has no parallel port, so I got one of those USB to parallel converters. It worked just fine until a few weeks ago when I installed SP1 for Vista. Now, the connection is seen and responded to, but I get a MESSAGE that one of the USB devices is not functioning correctly, and it is unrecognized. Long story short, I've tried everything (the printer still works when connected directly to a parallel port on older computers), including reinstalling all USB drivers, trying to run scf /scannow, etc. I even contacted the experts at Windows, who say the only remedy is to invoke the dreaded Restore disks process. Before and if I do that - any suggestions from the wise READERS of this forum? By the way - insofar as I can tell, I have zero other issues associated with SP1 (or any other update). My other USB devices continue to work as usual. Also, if, as one thread above points to, Microsoft is aware of this problem, why won't they make some sort of announcement relative to the issue, and develop corrective measures? What? Full disclosure and honesty from MS? What if you try system restore and return your computer to its state before the SP1 update. You could then selectively install the updates one at a time and test your printer after each one and in that way discover which particular update created the problem. There might be more than one update that creates the problem. You could discover which update or updates create a problem and install all other updates but those. SP1 is composed of individual updates that you can individually choose to install or not install if I'm not mistaken. You could go to Control panel, Programs and features, click view installed up-dates and start uninstalling the updates one by one until you get the printer to start working again. |

Solve : After Vista System Restore, msvcr80.dll is missing! (Solved)? |
|
Answer» I had to do a system restore, probably because I was messing around with the registry. I did a search online and apparently you can get it here: Been there, done that. I have tried all 6 versions of the DLL from 2 of my computers, as well as that one, and they aren't the right version, or Windows actually isn't reporting the correct error. :/Hmmm....Does it only happen when you run Breakout? Can you reinstall it? Quote from: Carbon Dudeoxide on July 23, 2008, 02:28:39 PM Hmmm....Does it only happen when you run Breakout? Word, WMP, Fx3, FileZilla and such are all working fine; I don't know if they use the DLL. I can't reinstall Breakout because I made it; I never installed it. If VISTA has the sfc utility, try running sfc /scannow. Have your VISTA CD available. Just my 2¢ Why is everyone saying 'my 2¢' Quote from: Carbon Dudeoxide on July 23, 2008, 03:09:52 PM Why is everyone saying 'my 2¢' Who is everybody? Sidewinder is one poster and considering the recession the US is in, yesterday's nickel is worth 2 cents today.....you just have to pay a dime for it My only Vista CD is the anytime upgrade; that is all HP gave me. (?) Anyway, I ran that program: Code: [Select]C:\Users\Kristopher>sfc /scannow Beginning system scan. This process will take some time. Beginning verification phase of system scan. Verification 98% complete.Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but wa s unable to fix some of them. Details are included in the CBS.Log windir\Logs\CBS\CBS.log. For example C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log I don't know what this MEANS, but at least maybe this explains the bug a bit better. http://rafb.net/p/l4yrXm58.html (last ~1,000 lines from C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log)Couldn't find anything in the listing that related directly to MSVCR80.DLL. I would think going forward, DLL's are backward compatible. They may have new functionality but all the old function remains. I would put the most current version of MSVCR80 into the system32 directory and rebuild your BREAKOUT project. Is that possible? With all the versions of the DLL, it's HARD to tell which one was installed when your project was originally built. It's still not working, although FWIW, the library that is using the DLL is a .a file; I didn't compile that .a file myself. I still think it is something other can a missing file; mismanagement of them maybe... Quote from: Sidewinder on July 23, 2008, 03:26:43 PM considering the recession the US is in, yesterday's nickel is worth 2 cents today.....you just have to pay a dime for it Well done! lol!Why not just reinstall the .NET framework, I believe that includes a version of MSVCR80.dll. I could try that; exactly which version should I install?well, I'd just go for the latest one. I think it's up to 3.0 or something. not sure. |

Solve : Certain windows updates will not let Vista connect to the internet? |
|
Answer» I'm running Vista Home Premium on a Sony Vaio and after I download updates I can no longer connect to the internet (through an ethernet CABLE or wireless). I had uninstalled a security update (I don't remember the specific one though) and it let me connect but the internet was really slow. I reformatted the hard drive and before I installed any updates I could connect to the internet without a problem. After installing updates I couldn't connect until I deleted Update for .NET Framework 3.0 (KB942371) and I've had no problems since. I just thought that I'd figure out which one was the cause of the problem by uninstalling them one by one and reinstall the updates as I ruled them out as being a problem. This happened to be the first one I tried (KB942371) after reformatting the HD but I have 30 more updates to download and install. No I'm not running Zone Alarm. As far as antivirus etc., I have and Webroot with Antivirus. Norton Firewall is on, windows firewall is disabled. Suggest that you disable one of the AV's. |

Solve : Video watching and battery life? |
|
Answer» I was planning on watching a movie on my laptop tonight and I am worried about my comp not having enough battery life. I was wondering what was more energy efficient: watching a movie on a dvd, ripping the movie to my hard drive and watching it or ripping it to a usb drive and watching it. I am running Windows Vista so I also plan to use ReadyBoost with either the same usb drive or another flash memory device I have. THANKS for any advice.mmm...I think running it from the flash drive would be most energy efficient. A) Turn off wireless, B) turn screen brightness as low as is consistent with a 'good' viewing experience, C) don't use another Readyboost drive - will take power and won't improve the movie viewing. An external monitor/TV/ screen would save power too since it draws power from the mains. Quote from: Carbon Dudeoxide on July 18, 2008, 09:13:11 PM Actually, watching it on the computer would be most energy efficient but I hope this wont be done illegally... Not sure that I understand your first points, but, with reference to the external monitor, yes, that would save power, he could turn off the laptop screen; but, he said that he wanted to watch the movie on his laptop. Quote Not sure that I understand your first points, In other words, why put it on your flash drive when you can put it on your hard disk? His original question was, which is more energy efficient, running the movie from: a) harddrive, b) DVD, or c) flash drive. I answered that I thought the flash drive would be most efficient, i.e., use less power. Do you think that running the harddrive requires less power that running a flash drive? Quote Do you think that running the harddrive requires less power that running a flash drive? If you don't run the hard drive, how do you run the OS? Quote from: Carbon Dudeoxide on July 18, 2008, 10:56:39 PM QuoteDo you think that running the harddrive requires less power that running a flash drive? If you don't run the hard drive, how do you run the OS? He is going to play a movie on his laptop. The harddrive will 'run' whether or not he 'plays' the movie from the harddrive or the flash drive. The question becomes, "will the incremental power consumption from playing the movie from the harddrive be equal to, less than or more than the power required to play the movie from the flash drive?" I think that the ANSWER is: more than; therefore, the battery will last longer if he plays the movie from the flash drive. The HD is already being used so running a movie from the HD won't increase the power usage. Watching from a flash drive means the computer has to supply power to the Flash Drive, right? Quote from: Carbon Dudeoxide on July 19, 2008, 11:07:52 AM
Sounds like you think that harddrives consume a fixed amount of power regardless of the drive's activity. That is not the case; each read and write by the drive increases its power consumption over its consumption at idle. To run the movie from the harddrive will require 'extra' reads from the harddrive to 'play' the movie, plus any extra harddrive activity due to Windows increased 'maintenance' because of playing the movie. The question then becomes the one above. I'm not certain that the answer is that the flash drive requires less power than the incremental power used by the harddrive - that's just my guess. But it is certain that the harddrive will use more power running the video than not running the video - everything else equal. Relative to the OP's question re maximizing battery life, I would guess that the difference in battery life running the movie from the hdd v. a flash drive would be 1% - 2% +/-, not important unless the battery goes dead before learning whodunit!Hmmm....Interesting Argument......Since it's a video running from the flash drive will still require some cacheing to the HDD no matter what device it's running from... Following this logic running it from the HDD would consume the least power. But renting the movie and watching it on a DVD player on a wide screen TV with surround sound would save the most power on the laptop... Quote Following this logic running it from the HDD would consume the least power.Quote from: Carbon Dudeoxide on July 19, 2008, 09:50:19 PM QuoteFollowing this logic running it from the HDD would consume the least power. Perhaps Whether or not you are in idle or playing games, the HD still spins. |

Solve : relocating page file slow down the system performance? |

Answer» I've currently changed the page file(virtual MEMORY) from C drive to D drive intending to get the system performance improved. 'cause I know that virtual memory should be leased in the drive which is not accessed frequently. from C drive to D drive intending to get the system performance improved. 'cause I know that virtual memory should be leased in the drive which is not accessed frequently. This may not be the case here because, unless you know there are two hard disks in your computer, Drives C and D are different Partitions on the same Hard Disk. I would bring it back to C drive so it wont have to keep accessing the D partition to save the Swap files. If Carbon is correct and you only have one physical hdd, leave the swap file on C:. If you have two harddrives, place the swap file on the faster, least used drive. If you place the swap file on a non system drive (PROBABLY your D:), I have read that you should leave a small swap file on the system drive. Answer» Hey guys, Vista wants 2GB of RAM.I believe you mean it needs 2GB of RAM. Quote from: Broni on July 19, 2008, 10:39:57 PM What was the reason for driver update? Driver update was to accommodate games that required an up to date graphics card. I'm not sure if it's on-board video or real. All I know is that it is integrated. Would it tell you on AMD's website if it's real or on-board? I'm sorry just not familiar with the terms. Solve : Vista & AOL? |

I never installed Earthlink's TotalAccess software; it was not needed. All I needed was my username and password to access Earthlink WebMail. I also had my Earthlink email account set up in Outlook Express and usually retrieved my mail that way. EVEN if you cannot avoid installing software from them, I can't imagine that it won't WORK with Windows Vista. |

Solve : "Recommand Mode 1280x1024" ????? |

Answer» i have a compaq presario pc and windows vista on it, and a flat screen monitor that is not part of the compaq tower, it is a diff screen and diff tower, when i first bought the computer i was having a problem starting windows up normaly,.. everything was connected right, double chekced everything, and when i use 2 start the computer, the only thing i would see when i start it is the loading bar on the bottom and below that says microsoft windows corp etc etc.. and then after it would load that the screen would just turn blank and a blue/grey box will pop up and say "recommand mode 1280x1024" the blue/grey box would stay up for about 5 seconds and then the screen turns black after.. i can hear the computer turn on regulary through the speakers but thru the screen it wont show.. so i called how 2 fix it, and they showed me how ,this was about a year and half ago, and i got it fixed but recently about a week ago. i had the same thing happen again, but i have a good feeling of what it was. and about every other week or so when the computer would start up a "HP UPDATE" asked if i wanted 2 update the computer, i always clicked "LATER" and after that it was fine , just last week i clicked "INSTALL" to see wat will really happen with the updates and while the updates were loading half ways through the screen turn black and said "Recommand mode 1280x1024" so the problem happened again, im guessing the "HP UPDATE" updated drivers on my computer or somthing and pretty much reseted the settings i had from before when i had the problem fixed , the only WAY i can start my computer with the scree showing is "SAFE MODE" , how can i start windows up normaly with the screen showing normal. i know its nothing wit the screen cuz its working perfectly fine right now just when windows starts normaly it will always bring up the blue/grey box , & in safe mode, starts up perfectly. if n E one can please help me out, & if they know n e thing about the HP UPDATES and how 2 uninstall the updates or how 2 change the setting back 2 how i had it on i first had the problem fixd. really appreciate this..thanxIt's the monitor. Solve : No administrator account on Vista? |
|
Answer» The administrator account got deleted on a Vista LAPTOP, and the other user does not have administrator privileges. How do you get in to create a new adminstrator account? Did you try GOING into safe mode? Usually if you go into safe mode, there is an account simply named "administrator". Go into it and create a new one. Are you sure all other accounts dont have admin privelages? In Vista real administrator account can't be deleted, because it's HIDDEN. |

Solve : Network Bridging proble? |
|
Answer» Hey guys, recently i bought a new computer with vista. And i'm enjoying it. But the problem is i have a laptop with Vista (Which i'm on now) and i want to bridge a connection via wireless through an ethernet cable connected to the ethernet port on the back of my desktop. I have tryed setting up a network inbetween the two. But the desktop does not have a INTERNET connection at all. Any ideas or suggestions on how to get it working? Thanks. Clipper34. Quote and i want to bridge a connection via wireless through an ethernet cable connected to the ethernet port on the back of my desktop. How is the laptop getting it's signal? So you want an ad hoc network? You will have to Enable Internet Connection Sharing. To enable ICS, on your host computer (your laptop): 1. Open Network Connections by clicking the START button , clicking Control Panel, clicking Network and Internet, clicking Network and Sharing Center, and then clicking Manage network connections. 2. Right-click the connection that you want to share, and then click Properties. If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation. 3. Click the Sharing tab, and then select the Allow other network users to connect through this computer’s Internet connection check box. Note: The Sharing tab will not be AVAILABLE if you have only one network connection. 4. If desired, you can also select the Allow other network users to control or disable the shared Internet connection check box. 5. Optionally, to allow other network users to use services running on your network, click Settings and select the services you want to allow. When you enable ICS, your local area network (LAN) connection gets a new static IP address and configuration, so you'll need to reestablish any TCP/IP connections between your host computer and the other network computers. To test your network and Internet connection, see if you can share files between computers and make sure each computer can REACH a website. If you do not use a hub/switch between your laptop and desktop you will need a cross-over cable. A network using Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) |

Solve : How do i get vista off my sata drive?? |
|
Answer» I have an Acer Aspire 5315-2290 Laptop with the following specs.: Not true I have a gaming pc that uses such drives an have xp installed on to it. what you probably need to do is disconnect an reconnect the drives. Not sure if this is a reference to my post or not; I'm not referring to SATA drivers, but, rather, chipset drivers, onboard video drivers, LAN drivers, etc. I am assuming from the original post that he wants to replace the Vista OS with XP, often XP drivers are not AVAILABLE for Vista pre-loaded machines. Quote from: TANGFIRMER on July 03, 2008, 05:51:06 PM I boot from the xp cd and follow the usual steps but before i get to the part where your given the option to delete the partition the computer displays a message saying (not the exact same words) no hard drive detected. His post Quote from: squall_01 on July 03, 2008, 06:29:39 PM His post Got it - and you are perfectly correct; but XP doesn't have native support for SATA drives, he'll need to load SATA drivers when Setup asks for them.I never had too. Quote from: squall_01 on July 03, 2008, 06:42:11 PM I never had too. OK.But these where maxtor drives, so that mite be the reason. Quote from: squall_01 on July 04, 2008, 04:43:46 AM But these where maxtor drives, so that mite be the reason. This makes no sense whatsoever.Tangfirmer...very early on in the setup process you will see a message at the bottom of the screen saying "Press F6 to install RAID/SATA drivers" do so and then insert the laptops Driver CD and hit Enter. If there a laptop drives yes, however I was meaning desktop. They dont pay me enough to do this stuff. Quote from: squall_01 on July 04, 2008, 08:39:30 AM If there a laptop drives yes, however I was meaning desktop. Irrelevant. |

Solve : Did a restore and lost everything? |
|
Answer» Ok so I have a computer where some Woman did a restore on her computer (thinking she had a virus) and it took her back to when she first bought the computer in time. Now I'm not sure if undoing the restore will bring everything back? Is there a program that will find and bring those files and programs back? You may inadvertently restore Windows XP to a previous configuration that you do not want. To undo the restoration: 1. Log on to Windows as Administrator. 2. Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click System Restore. System Restore starts. 3. On the Welcome to System Restore page, click Undo my last restoration, and then click Next. A System Restore message may APPEAR that lists configuration changes that System Restore will make. Click OK. 4. On the Confirm Restoration Undo page, click Next. System Restore restores the original Windows XP configuration, and then restarts the computer. 5. Log on to the computer as Administrator. The System Restore Undo Complete page appears. 6. Click OK. Quote from: mektek on July 01, 2008, 01:54:00 AM You may inadvertently restore Windows XP to a previous configuration that you do not want. To undo the restoration: How do you log on as the Administrator? The only way I know is to GO though safe mode.Log onto the Administrator account (which MIGHT be the only account on the computer).I haven't seen the computer yet. I'm not sure if it's xp home or pro or vista. How do you log on as administrator for them? The Administrator Account is the main user account. Basically go back to System Restore and there is an option to undo it. Right I know that. The only way I know how to log in is to go through safe mode to do it. And that was on xp home. Can you get onto Windows the normal way? Note: When you start up the computer, when it says 'Welcome', you are logging onto Windows. If you log on without having to click on another account, you are logging into the Administrator account.Yes I can. So then it should be no PROBLEM then. I'll see if I can get it to undo the restore. This method will not work as it's not a System Restore that was done but a Recovery installation.....they are 2 very different things and i wouldn't get her hopes up as her DATA is already long gone. |

Solve : Annoying feature in MS? |

Answer» Whenever I open Windows Explorer in any version the first thing that opens up is "My Documents" That's not where I want to GO. Is there any way to disable this and automatically open the C: drive instead?By default, Windows Explorer always opens with My Documents. You can customize it by CHANGING the properties for the Windows Explorer icon and replace the Target field with: %SystemRoot%\explorer.exe /e, c:\yourfolder
Where in place of path above you should enter the actual path to the directory you want open by default. For example C:\Windows, or C:\Documents and Settings, etc. To have My Computer listed as the default selection, type explorer.exe /e, Thanks, but I can't get it to change. I must be doing something wrong. What do you mean? It's not saving your settings? Does it give you an error? What are you TYPING in the box?I just added /c after the existing path and it opens to the C: drive on this computer using XP but on my LAPTOP with Vista, it just won't change anything. Edit: that should read e |

Solve : Gmail in OE Convoluted Issue? |
|
Answer» Ok, I couldn't make the title extremely descriptive, as it's a long problem. I help my mom with computer stuff. Networking, setting up, troubleshooting the works. I'm pretty proficient at this, but LATELY, I've come across a problem. She and her assistant use two computers, and want the same emails on them. For reference, her main email will be referred to as SCemail. Gmail for the other. I simply set up one regularly, and then made a gmail account on the other that forwarded the SCemail messages to the gmail account on her OE. This works perfectly, except for one thing. When she composes a message on the gmail account in OE, it is sent from the gmail account. However, when she sends it off the gmail site, it sends from the email I set as default, SCemail. Any ideas on how to make composed messages come from SCemail, and not her gmail? If I reset up the other Outlook, would this solve this problem?Yes it should solve it. Post back if it doesnt. Quote Also, when trying to export messages and contacts from OE, I get the MAPI error. Anyway to fix that?Im not sure about that one. Try Gmail help. Quote Thanks for all the great help, I'll probably be lurking around.Thats no problem and do stick around. Heh, thanks a lot. Oh, and I screwed gmail, there's no point in keeping it if I don't have to do the forwarding stuff. I found this on the MAPI issue, I'll try it and tell you if it didn't work. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/179637 Quote from: jcm4 on JUNE 24, 2008, 12:33:51 PM Oh, and I screwed gmail. Okay, Im not 100% sure but I dont think you should have done that. How are people supposed to email you now? What email address will they send it to? |

Hi I am new at all this and seem to be having a problem, thought I would see if I can fix it myself before I pay someone else to do it. My condolences you have Vista..... Do you have an anti-virus program? If so scan your system if it will let you. It almost sounds like Explorer is having a melt down. If the A/V scan comes out clean then I suggest just turning the machine off via the power button. Many systems require you to hold the power button in for 10 or 20 SECONDS to be sure it hadn't been accidentally pushed. Wait about 20 seconds then re-start the computer. If it was just a rouge application all should be good now. |

Solve : Vista startup problem? |

Answer» HELLO everybody, I badly need help on my computer. Every time I turn it on it tells me "Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software CHANGE might be the cause". It gives the options to run safe mode, use older setting, and to run windows regularly, but then in a couple of seconds it just freezes and shuts off after. Any help is appreciated. What Operating System? Did you make any changes before this happened?Vista I don't know any change that I know of. I'll ask around to see if anyone messed with the computer. If you have the Windows CD, you might WANT to try a Repair Install.Ok, I now know how it GOT messed up. A stupid friend of mine tried to connect an internal hdd adapter kit, but said it made a weird noise when he used it to connect his laptop hd to the computer. I would try to repair it with the windows cd, but the other problem is that the computer freezes in a couple seconds when it starts up.I don't think it will freeze when you boot from the Windows CD. Try it and tell us what happens. The BIOS COULD be looking for this other HDD that was connected which could be causing windows errors |
