Solve : No reaction from my computer?

Answer»

The computer is a Toshiba Satellite A205 running with Vista. It is roughly 14 months old.

When my computer starts, the Toshiba menu shows, it takes me to a black screen with a white flashing line, and then it goes to the "Start Windows normally or Start Error Control."

No matter which one I pick, it takes me to the startup menu with the scrolling green line. Sometimes, it remains on that menu. Other times, it proceeds past the menu and remains on a black screen.

I've TRIED to go through the boot to use the HDD function, NOTHING happens.

I'm not expecting someone on here to give me a step by step solution, but can anyone tell me what they believe is wrong?

Can you boot into Safe Mode? Solve : After SP1 Install,Vista No longer Recognizes HP LaserJet III thru USB Connection?

Answer»

20 years ago, I bought a LaserJet III printer, which has always been my primary and most reliable printer. A year ago, I bought a new PC, which has no parallel port, so I got one of those USB to parallel converters. It worked just fine until a few weeks ago when I installed SP1 for Vista. Now, the connection is seen and responded to, but I get a MESSAGE that one of the USB devices is not functioning correctly, and it is unrecognized. Long story short, I've tried everything (the printer still works when connected directly to a parallel port on older computers), including reinstalling all USB drivers, trying to run scf /scannow, etc. I even contacted the experts at Windows, who say the only remedy is to invoke the dreaded Restore disks process. Before and if I do that - any suggestions from the wise READERS of this forum? By the way - insofar as I can tell, I have zero other issues associated with SP1 (or any other update). My other USB devices continue to work as usual.

Now I know that I should go buy ANOTHER USB to parallel adapter, just to confirm the current adapter is okay - but I haven't done so yet. It's TOUGH to believe that a device with no moving parts, plugged in once and NEVER moved until this issue arose, just decided to give it up when SP1 came along. But I'll do that also before I use the restore disks.See if this does anything for you.

Good luck!

http://www.webtlk.com/2008/05/05/usb-stops-working-after-installing-windows-vista-sp1/drmsucks: Thanks for the tip - but no such luck. The device manager reported that the best driver was already installed. I uninstalled, and reinstalled, but Windows still does not recognize my printer.

Thanks again for your trouble.This?

http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&DEPA=0&Description=parallel+cardI have a Lexmark X75 printer that is not Vista compatible so no matter what I try in Vista it's not going to work. But I'm in the process of setting up my computer for dual boot. I'll have XP and Vista on one computer. From XP I'll be able to use my Lexmark printer that I have a whole lot of ink for. Not cartridges but ink to put in the cartridges. You can save a lot of money that way.

If you partition your hard drive and there's enough free space you could run 2 operating systems and from one of them sucessfully use your HP printer. Not strictly on topic but - my new HP work station came with Vista - and I started trying to live with it, which included moving my email client (Agent) and it's 4.5 Gb database on to it. Thought I'd survive Vista until thought - ''better apply SP1" - bad! Agent would no longer save or read database properly - thus making it useless. I downgraded to (back to) XP pro - my previous norm.

I mention this only because I seem to hear more and more tales of Vista probs and more so since SP1 .... including printer woes such as yours. I agree tho - dual boot may be your only recourse. The problem with dual boot, of course, is that you can't print from the Vista side.I very much appreciate the information and interest shown in the above postings. One significant problem with the dual boot solution is pointed out by drmsucks. Actually, I have a workaround which has dealt rather effectively with the printing problem - I connected the printer to the parallel port of an XP machine, which like my Vista machine, is connected to a LAN and is therefore accessible from any LAN connected computer. But this just begs the question - what caused Vista to cease recognition of the printer thru the USB to parallel adapter? Also, if, as one thread above points to, Microsoft is aware of this problem, why won't they make some sort of announcement relative to the issue, and develop corrective measures? Quote from: veritasffg on July 25, 2008, 07:34:12 PM

Also, if, as one thread above points to, Microsoft is aware of this problem, why won't they make some sort of announcement relative to the issue, and develop corrective measures?

What? Full disclosure and honesty from MS?

What if you try system restore and return your computer to its state before the SP1 update. You could then selectively install the updates one at a time and test your printer after each one and in that way discover which particular update created the problem. There might be more than one update that creates the problem. You could discover which update or updates create a problem and install all other updates but those. SP1 is composed of individual updates that you can individually choose to install or not install if I'm not mistaken. You could go to Control panel, Programs and features, click view installed up-dates and start uninstalling the updates one by one until you get the printer to start working again.

Solve : After Vista System Restore, msvcr80.dll is missing! (Solved)?

Answer»

I had to do a system restore, probably because I was messing around with the registry.

Apparently the system restore deleted some DLLs, including msvcr80.dll.
I know it's missing because a program I made uses a library made in C, which needs this DLL, so my program won't start now.

I do actually have multiple versions of this DLL:

But if I put any of them in the folder with my program, instead of getting a missing dll ERROR, I get an error that it is the wrong version:

So I am not sure what to do. I don't think it is just a missing file anymore, because the program can run on another computer of mine, but that doesn't have any unique dlls. So I think maybe the OS just can't find the DLL or something. Other programs seem to work fine, but I haven't tried them all since the system restore.

I don't want to reset my computer to original factory settings because of one missing file!

I have Vista HP, 32BIT, and a 56K connection. Solve : Problem with Folder Redirection in Windows Vista?

Answer»

Hi guys (and gals),

I've got a problem TRYING to sort out folder redirection with Vista.

We've got a S2k3 DC, with several Windows XP, and a handful of Windows Vista clients.

The problem is, when you log on with your roaming profile to a Vista box, it creates a %username%.V2 folder where the user profiles are kept.

Now I understand why this happens ('cus Vista & XP roaming profiles aren't natively interoperable), but I'm having great difficulties when I try to REDIRECT the folders to the related XP folders so that our users have all thier stuff available instantly regardless of what O/S they're on.

I've followed the offical MS White Paper, and got no where. I've set up the GPO a couple of times and I've had no luck.

I was just wondering if anyone could help me out.

One thing I think might be causing an issue is that we had to install GPMC.MSC onto the Vista box, as it wasn't there...which is appearently the doings of SP1? Maybe there is something else we're missing on this box to get it rocking?

I'd prefer to setup a GPO or something like that, as it will make life easier when we all end up logging onto Vista boxes.

Anyone got any ideas?

Cheers,

SidWe hit this issue when we rolled out a few Vista Business editon systems, and we downgraded them back to XP Pro SP2 until we are ready to move to Vista or the next best OS if years from now we are forced to upgrade.

We also tried the group policy to resolve but it just caused more headaches as for what should work wasnt, so we went back to our original CONFIGURATION. This also helped resolve the problems we were having with users trying to work in the Vista environment and getting lost trying to perform simple tasks because the layout is different than XP.

I am sure there is an answer out there to make this work... and I will be watching this to see what the final solution is in case we have to move to Vista... hopefully someone here will have the answer or point both of us in the right direction to make this work.

I've managed to get it working partially.

I setup a seperate share folder, and redirected the My Docs (and music/pics/vids), Desktop and Start Menu to that folder, which works a treat.

I still come up against a brick wall when trying to share the other folders via GP.

I think the main problem was the fact that the profiles jsut don't want to interoperate when you use the %username% variable.

I think it might be down to Vista thinking that the %username% variable means the ".V2" version when it's available, as I happily have used the % variable for the seperated share folder and both o/s's work absolutely fine.

EDIT:
For some reason, the DC won't let me redirect Application Data...it just comes up with "Access Denied".
Me being an idoit...it tells you why when you change them in Vista...
/EDIT

I have managed to get my own profile sharing across all compatable data (I think?) by MANUALLY redirecting the folders once logged in. I can imagine that could be a ball ache for a large network of non-tech people, but here it might just fly...untill I can find away of doing it autonomously...as we're a small team with a high knowledge...me being the lowest of the pack really.

Anyway, I'm surprised the white paper solution doesn't work...and I'd love to hear from people that have actually got things sharing. Or at very least, a confirmation on why I can't redirect to folders that have already been created by XP.

Hopefully someone somewhere that has got redirection to work might read this...or let me know why it wont work in the GPO, when it works fine manually...

SidI got it working in line with how the white paper says it should!

It was down to NTFS permissions.

However, it played havoc with the Dev teams compiling...so it got scrapped.

I know how to do it now though!!! Woot.

I wouldn't recomend it though. Vista seems to "inject" itself into the XP profile, and if you should want to stop redirection...it's a pain, especially as the folder targets aren't redirected by default. Removing the Dev test went smooth ish, as I haddn't config'd the GPO to re-direct after removal...but removing me, after changing the GPO was a nightmare, I'm just glad I didn't have anything on my profile.

I think the main problem there was the cached profile on the computer was still looking for the targets, which didn't exist. Once I deleted my profile off the computer, not a problem. I did however delete my folders prior to that, so it would recreate them fresh...so not sure if just deleting the cached profile would suffice...

Anyways, if anyone is having problems I'm quite happy to attempt to help you!

Sid

Answer»

My computer just keep's on restarting for no apparent reason and at random times any suggestions What is your operating system, is it a windows xp , or windows vista , win 98... , and when does it usually restart by itself ?it's windows xp professional and the restart is completely at random it could take five minutes or an hour, i could be hearing music with wmediaplayer or just browsing the WEB During the time that you are not using your computer, are you shutting down your system completely.. because this kind of issues usually occurs, if the computer is always running all the time, even if it is not in use.

now if you are shutting down your computer when not in use, did you already try to scan your computer for some possible viruses?yes I do turn off my computer properly, and I have already done 3 virus scan one normal scan and 2 restart scan. I think my computer clean of virus but I might have to do another virus scan to be sureAnd by the way , if you already scanned your computer for possible viruses... check if you have multiple security programs on your computer, that might be conflicting with each other. thanks i'll give it a tryyour WELCOME!! and good luck, by the way you can also try this one http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315265 You don't say what your location is - but is the weather warm where you are. I normally find intermittent restarting can be caused by overheating. Check your fans are working OK and vacuum out any fluff/dust/debris that may be clogging up your airflow
Good LuckI had similar problem once, usually it displayed some distorted COLORS for a moment when it crashed then it restarted or shut down. It started happening after i updated bios. After a while it appeared that the graphic card was damaged and the AGP actually damaged other graphic cards when replaced later the power supply showed up to be fault i beleave that the power supply was the origin of the problem ( i dont think the MB did damage the power supply). However i think the best way to figure what it is is to REPLACE or detach (if possible) hardware components one after another. Have not installed any new programs other than my favorite online game (World of Warcraft, yeah, I know, I'm a gamer geek) and anti-virus/spyware (Spyware Doctor) within those two months.
When it first occurred, the computer had been on, but idle (just desktop visible, no programs running except PC Tools Spyware Doctor, which is always on) I just noticed a blue screen with this message on it when I returned to the computer after about 1 -2 hours of idle. I attempted to restart by cutting power (ctrl-alt-del was not responding). I repeatedly only get the above blue screen.

I followed the directions above, but all it does is bring me back to the screen mentioned above.
I can't even get into safe mode. It starts up, flashes the Gateway logo, goes black with a message "windows is loading files" and pauses for a minute and then goes to the blue screen.

I tried to reinstall using the Windows Vista disc that came with my computer and no dice. Same blue screen. No luck, still blue screen with the above message. As the computer is fairly new still, I do not care about any of the data on it and didn't have anything important on it yet, so saving data is not a concern, I just need the *censored* thing to work again.

Only other thing I can think of was I may have turned off automatic updates a few weeks ago and forgot to turn it back on again, but I'm not entirely sure.

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. If it is only 2 months old i would be taking advantage of the Warranty...Trolling the internet reveals this to be a known issue for Microsoft:
Stop error message when you start a Windows Vista-based computer: "0x0000C1F5"
System won't boot, 0x0000C1F5, KB 946084
Workaround for 0x0000C1F5

Apparently once you format the offending disk and reinstall Vista, you can download and install a hotfix to avoid this issue in the future.

This is above my pay grade so you're on your own unless someone else wants to jump in. Good luck with this. --dahlarbear Quote from: dahlarbear on July 23, 2008, 05:12:32 AM

Trolling the internet reveals this to be a known issue for Microsoft:
Stop error message when you start a Windows Vista-based computer: "0x0000C1F5"
System won't boot, 0x0000C1F5, KB 946084
Workaround for 0x0000C1F5

Apparently once you format the offending disk and reinstall Vista, you can download and install a hotfix to avoid this issue in the future.

This is above my pay grade so you're on your own unless someone else wants to jump in. Good luck with this. --dahlarbear

THANKS so much! Solve : Computer won't download files from internet?

Answer»

Well, I've been working on this all day. Trying everything I can think of to make it work, but I can't, so I'm hoping someone else has solved the issue.

Basically what's happening is when you click on a link to download a file, it will act like it DOWNLOADED the file, but you can't find it. It's only failing when you try to download the file (both save and run options). I tried with a jpg (as another TEST) and when I right clicked the link to it and TOLD it to "Save Target As" the download disappeared, but when I opened the file in IE7 and told it to save image, it worked fine. Beyond that the internet works fine.

Occasionally you would catch the file appearing on the desktop for a second before DISAPPEARING. It's like it's being downloaded and then moved, but it's not in the trash and the only hit when you search the hard drive is the 'Recent Files' directory, and when you double-click that short CUT, it says the file cannot be found.

I'm using Vista SP1. The issue crops up in both IE7 and Firefox 3 (which I just installed tonight). The computer is an Acer Aspire 9410 with a 1.73 GHz Pentium Dual Core with 2GB of RAM.

I've taken a look at running processes, installed software, running services and everything looks good. I've tried turning off the firewalls, security, and UAC, but that didn't solve the problem. I've reset IE's security settings. Then installed Firefox and got the same issue.

Any ideas would be welcomed. I know there was another thread that I'd run across, that's why I'm here. The issue sounds very similar.

I honestly thought if I installed Firefox it would DL and I could peg it as an IE issue, but that was disappointing.

I need to re format my pc, and having to do that have found another problem, with Vista there is no restore disk you do it from the hard drive, alas none of my buttons suggest that it is accessible to me. I have someone look up the makers website and it is under construction! My luck continues. So I asked this person to look up directions on the net and he has found numerous complaints from users and experts alike that the partition file seems to be hidden on this make of pc!
I am not a quitter so I will endeavour untill I get back on the internet again with all m y buddies and back to work also. Will let you all know how I get on and will give thanks that I had a need for some help and discovered this little GEM of a site. Once gain thank you all for trying and a very good lesson learnt here.Ok - hang on a minute! Before you re-install Vista:

I am not familiar with the Windows family safety service which you installed. However, when you installed it, didn't you have to select certain parameters for the program to restrict access? And didn't you provide a password to prevent changes to your parameter selections? Are you certain that you have accessed the program and disabled protection - you would need to enter your password; disabling the program in Msconfig will not work, it will just lock you down, as it did.

I really think that the key to your problem is to disable the protection that YOU ENABLED, from within the program.

Best of luck! Also - try this:

Start>Run>type cmd, enter>type services.msc, enter: look for a service named Safety Service or Family Safety Service or similar. If you find it, right-click on the service, select Properties, change the 'startup' to Automatic. Okay, and exit dialogue box. Re-boot computer.

Post back. katzyin,The link i provided earlier does not require internet access to perform.Only need the access to read and copy the instructions to execute the disable. You do seem to have access via some computer to be doing this dialogue? I also in my research to try and assist you discovered the many problems with this particular program (many in the removal aspect). If i might suggest for future process-- do a google search to ascertain the user comments on any given program that seems to interest you BEFORE downloading and installing it. Better to benefit from others experiences that have problems.goodluck, truenorth

Solve : Certain windows updates will not let Vista connect to the internet?

Answer»

I'm running Vista Home Premium on a Sony Vaio and after I download updates I can no longer connect to the internet (through an ethernet CABLE or wireless). Solve : Video watching and battery life?

Answer»

I was planning on watching a movie on my laptop tonight and I am worried about my comp not having enough battery life. I was wondering what was more energy efficient: watching a movie on a dvd, ripping the movie to my hard drive and watching it or ripping it to a usb drive and watching it. I am running Windows Vista so I also plan to use ReadyBoost with either the same usb drive or another flash memory device I have. THANKS for any advice.mmm...I think running it from the flash drive would be most energy efficient.

Also:

A) Turn off wireless, B) turn screen brightness as low as is consistent with a 'good' viewing experience, C) don't use another Readyboost drive - will take POWER and won't improve the movie viewing.

Good luck!Actually, watching it on the computer would be most energy efficient but I hope this wont be done illegally...

The computer would have the use quite some power to use the Flash Drive but it would be useless if you can copy it from the flash drive to the HD.

Quote from: drmsucks on July 17, 2008, 10:13:18 AM

A) Turn off wireless, B) turn screen brightness as low as is consistent with a 'good' viewing experience, C) don't use another Readyboost drive - will take power and won't improve the movie viewing.

An external monitor/TV/ screen would save power too since it draws power from the mains. Quote
Do you think that running the harddrive requires less power that running a flash drive?
If you don't run the hard drive, how do you run the OS? Quote from: Carbon Dudeoxide on July 18, 2008, 10:56:39 PM
Quote
Do you think that running the harddrive requires less power that running a flash drive?
If you don't run the hard drive, how do you run the OS?

He is going to play a movie on his laptop. The harddrive will 'run' whether or not he 'plays' the movie from the harddrive or the flash drive.

The question becomes, "will the incremental power consumption from playing the movie from the harddrive be equal to, less than or more than the power required to play the movie from the flash drive?" I think that the ANSWER is: more than; therefore, the battery will last longer if he plays the movie from the flash drive.

The HD is already being used so running a movie from the HD won't increase the power usage. Watching from a flash drive means the computer has to supply power to the Flash Drive, right? Quote from: Carbon Dudeoxide on July 19, 2008, 11:07:52 AM

The HD is already being used so running a movie from the HD won't increase the power usage.

Sounds like you think that harddrives consume a fixed amount of power regardless of the drive's activity. That is not the case; each read and write by the drive increases its power consumption over its consumption at idle.

To run the movie from the harddrive will require 'extra' reads from the harddrive to 'play' the movie, plus any extra harddrive activity due to Windows increased 'maintenance' because of playing the movie. The question then becomes the one above.

I'm not certain that the answer is that the flash drive requires less power than the incremental power used by the harddrive - that's just my guess. But it is certain that the harddrive will use more power running the video than not running the video - everything else equal.

Relative to the OP's question re maximizing battery life, I would guess that the difference in battery life running the movie from the hdd v. a flash drive would be 1% - 2% +/-, not important unless the battery goes dead before learning whodunit!Hmmm....Interesting Argument......Since it's a video running from the flash drive will still require some cacheing to the HDD no matter what device it's running from...
Following this logic running it from the HDD would consume the least power.

But renting the movie and watching it on a DVD player on a wide screen TV with surround sound would save the most power on the laptop... Quote
Following this logic running it from the HDD would consume the least power.
Quote from: Carbon Dudeoxide on July 19, 2008, 09:50:19 PM
Quote
Following this logic running it from the HDD would consume the least power.

Perhaps Whether or not you are in idle or playing games, the HD still spins.

Solve : Imaging Vista Machine with Imagex [SOLVED]?

Solve : Delete ldb in startup folder?

Answer»

I have locked down workstation which multiple users use to access a MS Access database. The database automatically starts up when the machine is rebooted. I've done this by placing the databse in the startup folder. The problem is, when I reboot the PC (or if it ever crashes) the .ldb file is still in the startup folder. It then displays an error because it tries to run the .ldb file. Is there ANYWAY of deleting this .ldb file before it runs?

I was thinking of possibly a batch file to run at startup to delete this .ldb file. Question is what should go in the batch file and how do I get the batch file to run before windows tries to open the .ldb file? What version of windows are you running? I know XP has a way to run a batch file on start up and on shut down. I am sure vista can do the same thing.

For XP you can setup a group policy. If your not in a domain than go to the machine and type gpedit.msc from a command prompt. Than open Windows settings and you will see where you can add the scripts.

Hi, It's XP, but I've just REALISED I can put the database in a different folder and put a shortcut to the database in the startup folder. However, I have another little problem:

The PC is part of a domain. When the PC boots up it runs a login script to map to the network drives. Sometimes this runs a bit slower than other times. Because the database has tables on the network, if the login script is running slow the database starts up and errors because it cannot find the backend tables.
Is there any way in a batch file to write in a delay of say 30 seconds then open the database? In this case I can guarantee the login script will have run.In the group policy open admin templates and than system...scripts. Than enable "Run Logon Scripts Synchronously."

This forces the login script to FINISH before the desktop is created.

Yes this seems to work. Thanks.

Unfortunately I've just spotted another problem.
I've used a program someone suggested called KaneBT to hide the start button and taskbar. This does hide the taskbar and start button however if I double CLICK where the start button should be, I still see the options LIKE My Computer etc. I can't allow this to happen. I just want users to see a database front screen (similar to a kiosk user) and not be able to do anything else.

Any ideas?

Solve : Vista & AOL?

Answer»

I have heard that Vista and AOL are not compatible - is that true? We just bought a new computer, and Vista was the only option - couldn't get XP. We have dial up AOL, but now I am wondering if we're going to be able to use it. If this is true, is Vista compatible with Earthlink?I used Earthlink for several years until a change in the local DSL provider necessitated switching to EMBARQ. I never installed Earthlink's TotalAccess software; it was not needed. All I needed was my username and password to access Earthlink WebMail. I also had my Earthlink email account set up in Outlook Express and usually retrieved my mail that way. EVEN if you cannot avoid installing software from them, I can't imagine that it won't WORK with Windows Vista.

I don't know about AOL but I'd GUESS you do need to install their software. But, like Earthilink, I can't imagine that it won't work with Windows Vista. How many customers do you think they'd be willing to lose due to their software being incompatible with Vista? See what I mean? How many customers do you think they'd be willing to lose

Yeah - I guess that's true. Our other computer suddenly died, so we hate to risk something we're not sure about, and Vista is so different! I had read some message boards too about Vist aand AOL, so I thought I'd CHECK this website for answers. Thanks - I wish Embarq offered high speed internet where I LIVE - I'd love to get rid of the dial up! its true with vista &aol ihave anew computer and use adial up system i cannot gain access to the internet i have tried netscape-netzero-aol no luck aol is sending me cd aol9.0-vr they said should work ? there is a 3week backlog ? hp tech people were no help these isps are not equiped to handle dial up users of widows vista system the computer i purchased is going back to seller

Solve : Gmail in OE Convoluted Issue?

Answer»

Ok, I couldn't make the title extremely descriptive, as it's a long problem. I help my mom with computer stuff. Networking, setting up, troubleshooting the works. She and her assistant use two computers, and want the same emails on them. For reference, her main email will be referred to as SCemail. Gmail for the other. I simply set up one regularly, and then made a gmail account on the other that forwarded the SCemail messages to the gmail account on her OE. This works perfectly, except for one thing. When she composes a message on the gmail account in OE, it is sent from the gmail account. However, when she sends it off the gmail site, it sends from the email I set as default, SCemail. Any ideas on how to make composed messages come from SCemail, and not her gmail?
Sorry if this is confusing. Thanks! Why not set up one email account and just give the password to your mom and her assistant?Let's say she gets an email on computer one. She opens it. She then goes to computer two. It's not there. Why wouldnt it be there? It would just show it as "read".it just isn't, never has. I'd assumed it was just an error that happened to everyone. Also, when trying to export messages and contacts from OE, I get the MAPI error. ANYWAY to fix that? Solve : Question about Windows Registry and environment variables?

Answer»

BLUF: I need to build up the actual %TEMP% path for all users
methodically using values in the REGISTRY, and I need to do this both
by the current user AND as a service will do this running as "Local
System." Thus, I can't rely on it always being ...\\Local
Settings\Temp.

I have a service running as Local System, and I need to find each
user's %TEMP% directory. I've found a location in the registry that
is helpful, but not exactly what I am LOOKING for. So, any help is
greatly appreciated.

I need this information, because I need the service to write something
to a particular user's directory, and as evidenced by MSFT's Virtual
PC Images, this is not always how a machine in set up (the user is
`IETester` but the %TEMP% dir is `C:\DOCUME~1\IETest\Local Settings
\Temp" (notice `IETest` instead of `IETester`).

The locations that I found in the registry are:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer
\Shell Folders

HKEY_USERS\S-1-...\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer
\Shell Folders

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer
\DocFolderPaths

Obviously, the CURRENT_USER is useless, because the service (running
as Local System) won't know the current user (and I need all users
anyway). If I use the value in USERS, I'll have to backtrace and find
the value of %USERPROFILE% somewhere. The LOCAL_MACHINE looks like a
reasonable place, but I don't know if it is exactly what I'm looking
for. Another problem with LOCAL_MACHINE (at least, with the registry
key I'm referencing above), is that the "Value" listed is still not
the user name for the current user. (Ex: Value is `IETest` and the
value's data is set to `C:\Documents and Settings\IETest\My
Documents`. HOWEVER, the actual USER NAME is `IETester`.

Sidenote: System.IO.GetTempPath() returns the value "C:\Documents and
Settings\IETest\Local Settings\Temp," so that at least jives with what
I'm seeing in the registry (instead of relying on the actual username
to hardcode paths), but I still can't put everything together.

What is the best way to do this? I'm not sure which values in the
registry get changed if the user changes the default setting/location,
so I don't know exactly where to look. And one last question: Is this
location/forumlation the same between XP and VISTA (ignoring the
Wow6432Node)?

Any help/insite is greatly appreciated!

Solve : the battle of the the OS is over and Vista won?

Answer»

I WILL TAKE REPLACE XP WITH VISTA WHEN THEY PRY MY COLD DEAD FINGEWRS OFF MY KEYBOARD!!!! sound familar???
well Im not dead and I just got done installing vista-64 bit bussiness, after I up graded to dual core with 2 8800gt w/ 512mb of gpu ram and 4 gigs of xms extreme 800 ddr2 and was very dissapointed in the preformance jump so after doing some reading up and finding how widows XP doesnt support more ram over 2 gis and that vista 64 was built with HIGH preformance GAMING in mind I dug even deeper and found that computers with specs very close to mine were getting better scores only diffrence being vista 64 bit it has been almost 2 yrs since the release and i decided it is time to step up if I want preformance. so my next question I know there is a place where I can go that will add a link to the registrey that will allow me to right click a file and give me the option to send or COPY just like XP does, and I also hhave had issues adding flash plug ins is there also a link for that? my networking teacher in school( well college Im 47) has moved on and I have nologer have a mentor so guys you have alwats been great in the past can you help me here also

thx Savvage aka deokatI tried to guide a friend through changing his video resolution. Solve : Partitioning Vista 64 bit....?

Answer»

I want to make my slower drive just one partition for media. it does not contain windows, but it has the C: drive. It appears there is a boot folder on there, is this needed?
i have tried using Paragon Partition Manager 9.0, it tells you to use to RecoveryCD, which i did and there is no way that i could find to resize a partition!
using microsoft's version is complete crap :|
i also need to change around the sizes of some partitions on my SATA drive....
im running vista ultimate 64 bit.
i want to know an easy program to do this, i dont mind booting the pc through CD etc... but Partition Manager didnt have the option to resize (afaik)
Thanksany ideas anyone? If the smaller drive has the C: partition on it wiping it will render the machine unbootable...
Post alot more info on the machine; number of drives; how they were setup etc. and there may be a way out of this dilemna without losing everything.

WARNING: At this point in time i would not be foolin around with partition utilities until we know what's going on here...well, i dont think i have ever had windows on the C drive. yet because windows loves it so much it apparently contains system files. Just to help, here is a screenshot of what appears in disk management.

I PLANNED on having 'Disk 0' as only one partition, all for media (NO BOOT)
I also wanted to expand Vista 64 bit partition by taking off some space from the other partitions, (you can see the Unallocated Space) however it seems i can only take off some data from the partition, then put it back on the same one which is completely pointless.
Tried doing it through command prompt, still no success.
BTW, i have just put the page file on the C drive because i've ran out of space on M lol (it wasnt effecting anything earlier)

i would like it to look something like this---
'Disk 0' Media (Primary Partition, Page File) approx 160gb | Page file to speed up pc |
'Disk 1' Media (Primary Partition) 175gb
Programs (Primary Partition) 65gb
Vista 64-bit (Boot, Page File, Crash Dump, Primary Partition) 60gb

Hope this helpsSuggestions:

Disk 0 = Vista drive + Program files and Swapfile etc. Space = the whole drive.
Disk 1 = Data divided up however you want it.

There's a reason any flavor of Windows writes a certain # of files to the root sector of C:....don't resist it ....GO with the Force.
It's the most trouble-free setup there is.so you recommend reinstalling vista? :S
Disk 0 is IDE, Disk 1 is SATA, that is why i want media etc. on Disk 0 and Vista and programs on Disk 1...
Should i rename M (Vista Drive) C? or something like that?
maybe that could trick windows lol
suggestions?any help?please? lolSorry...been real busy.

First some basics to clarify things which will simplify it.

Any version of Windows HAS to write certain files to the root dir. of C: to function properly.
This is why it makes sense to have it installed there anyways.

Having programs installed on another partition/drive doesn't have many benefits speedwise....other than making things maybe more organised it's not really worth it.

Your SATA drive is probably faster than the IDE.

Keeping all this in mind and following your original parameters for your drive setup here's how i would suggest laying it out:

_______________________________________ _________________

Split the SATA drive in 2 equally....roughly 150G each.

Primary partition: C: = Vista; Programs and pagefile.
2nd partition: D: = Storage and or media work...MUSIC; video etc.

Then wipe your IDE drive after grabbing any important data and use it for additional storage.

This will involve re-installing Vista and your apps but you'll have a neat clean setup and should see a small performance gain.
I've tried to merge/move/expand partitions before and even with the best 3rd party apps out there it has never worked clean enough for me...

A clean start would be best.

Obviously the size paramaters mentioned above can be customised to your liking but you get the general idea here.

Let us know.so you'd recommend putting all my media in a partition on the SATA, completely wiping everything else, then reinstalling Vista?
thing is, i've just installed vista again- taken me quite a while to get it how i want it When you say install all your media i'm not quite sure what you mean by that....
As far as getting it set up how you want you could use the Files and Settings Transfer Wizard to copy your settings.
Info Here

The main problem with what you want to do is your boot info is stored on C: and your installation resides elsewhere...
I've never been successful using any partitioning APP to merge a boot sector to an OS install but if you want to try it OK.
The reason it probably won't work is even if you did merge the 2 successfully the bootloader will be looking in different partitions for your Vista install because this is how it was set up originally...well heres the next problem- how on earth do i find a program that works with 64 bit?
(i dont mind paying) i tried Paragon Partition Manager 9 but in the Recovery CD it doesnt have the resizing function

do you think there is a file i can edit for the path of the boot sector?... im guessing this wouldnt happen because its all linked...
the files and settings transfer seems to want me to have 2 pcs tooParagon does work in Vista 64....
You could try Ranish which is Free but i still don't think the bootloader will operate properly.

Here
is another guide to using FAST...you don't need 2 machines. Simply run it to gather your CURRENT settings and save them to a floppy or USB drive.
Then when you need to migrate them into the new install run it again and point it to the settings file you saved.
I have good luck with partition manager....you could give it a shot....

http://www.paragon-software.com/home/pm-personal/comparison.html

It works with 64 bit vista
yes, i know paragon works with 64 bit.
anyone know where the resize function is in it though? :S
i cant find it :|
