Solve : Deleated a tool bar.?

Answer»

My wife has a new computer and it is full of tool bars and other stuff that we were trying to get rid of. I took out the tool bar that has all the tool bars in it. How do I get that back? What tool bar that has all the tool bars on it? Don't REALLY know what you are talking about.I don't know what you call it but it is the one that you go to to turn off other tool bars. It scrolls down and has checks next to the tool bars that are on. I took out the wrong check and I can't get to it now because it isn't there because I goofed. I think it was called tools before I unchecked the wrong toolbar.what program is/was this toolbar in? or are you talking about the taskbar's right-click->Toolbars menu? Are we talking about INTERNET Explorer? If we are, you should see an icon on the tab bar (or just above it in the address bar) that says TOOLS. Click on that and enable the Menu Bar.Yes it is in Internet Explorer. I can't click on tools because the tool bar it was in is the one I turned off. There is no longer a tool box to click on to get to the tool bars.Right Click on the address bar box (where you ENTER the url). Then click on "menu bar"Thank you, that worked. I am getting to old. I should have remembered that. I know I have DUN it before. Thank you much for your time.No problem - that's what we're here for.

Solve : pc keeps on freezing?

Answer»

hello i hope somebody can help my pc is only 4months old and it keeps on freezing on me but it doesn't do this to my wife, i will be running facebook an music and it just freezes but the music will keep on playing until the current song ends it is doing it more often and its getting really painfull would be gratefull if someone could help

ThankyouDid you GET a warranty with the computer ?

Post your computer make/model..

I'd say you've got either a virus or too many programs/services running..

Click start, in the search box type RUN, open up RUN when you see it in the menu... Type: msconfig click OK

On the start tab, click disable ALL, click apply, click OK, restart the computer... Log onto facebook... do what you do normally and see if the problem is corrected..In order to get out of freeze issue follow the given steps:
You should run fewer programs at a time.
Update your drivers
clean the registry of corrupted files
Do a scan of your computer with a top flight registry repair program Quote from: kristain on April 16, 2010, 04:46:33 AM

This is a computer right out of the factory and likely has too many trial programs installed, which need to be dealt with..

I've seen registry cleaners do LITTLE for the performance of PCs.. Corrupt registry entries are likely not the culprit here...

That should not be necessary - but it's a good troubleshooting step

Update your drivers

Only if needed. Drivers should NEVER be updated unless there is a need to do so. It is possible the sound drive does need to be updated in this particular case.

clean the registry of corrupted files

Nonsense

Do a scan of your computer with a top flight registry repair program

More nonsense --- DO NOT use registry utilities. They can not help and as often as not they cause problems
Okay, now LET's talk about what to do.

Does this happen only when playing music? If so, with all apps you use to play music or only one? What happens in safe MODE (please TRY)? Quote from: Allan on April 16, 2010, 06:23:10 AM

Try this:
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-vista/Fix-a-corrupted-user-profilei tried those last 2 entries and they did not do anythingWell, Safe Mode with Networking would not be useful since no sound driver is loaded, and we need sound to determine if your problem is fixed..

Run the defragmentor and then download Malwarebytes and Spybot Search and Destroy, install, update them, and run scans... They are free and excellent

When you install spybot, do not install the "tea timer" as an option, during the installation

Solve : To much stuff on my computer?

Answer»

hello
Please help
I have an acer aspire with 40 gb of hard drive
i took off all documents pictures and songs, ( 4 gb)
and i installed the w 7 ( i diddnt have enough space to install so thats why i started this little adventure)
so the hard drive is showing 20 gb used but i dont have anything on it!
how can i find it and delete it?
i am somewhat familiar i just need a starting point on the path?
if i partition the hard drive and erase all what should i save for a reboot? and os?
i have the w 7 on a jump and i have all the word and all th other programs i want to keep
please help
fLet's start at the beginning. Do you want to completely erase your hd and install Windows 7, install it as a dual boot option, or UPGRADE your current installation?i would RATHER not erase but if i have to i guess its a must?
i have all the disks for teh word and all that
but its showing 20gb being used? i cant imagine that thats any good..
it was an 'open box' COMPUTER....Go to System Properties - system restore and disable system restore. Then go to INTERNET Properties and clear the Temporary Internet Files Folder. Check your TEMP folder and delete everything you see in it. Then empty the recycle bin and see how much free space you have.

Again - if you do not want to do a clean install do you want to dual boot or upgrade your OSi had to install service pack 1 and 2 last night before i installed w 7
maybe i should just clean and start over?
i emptied recycle bin
went thru windows explorer and deleted all the files and temp stuff
still 20 gb showing:(Did you disable system restore and empty the TIF as I suggested above?please explain the complete path again
and instructions

system restore?
under ?
control panel, system and security?
then system restore? to an earlier time? ( hasnt been done ever and it has not been set up by windows)
is that ur talking about?
ive emptied and deleted
actually i am sorry its showing 32 gb used:(Look - please FOLLOW instructions.

Go to Control Panel - System Properties - System Restore. If system restore is enabled on any drive, DISABLE it. That will immediately free up a lot of space.

If you are unable to follow these instructions then download treesize (http://www.jam-software.com/freeware/index.shtml) and it will show you what is using the spaceim trying but i get lost on the "system properties" i dont see that
it hasnt been restored ever
so i guess it thats what your talking aboutgot the tree size

Solve : no admin?

OK i have no admin literally
i did everything possible
No idea what you are talking about. Litereally.http://windows7news.com/2009/02/03/enable-or-disable-the-windows-7-administrator-account/

Enable Or Disable The Windows 7 Administrator Account

A word of caution at the beginning. It is generally not ADVISED to tamper around with the built in
administrator account of Windows 7. If you do not need it or do not know why you would need it, then don’t.

Here is a QUICK rundown on how to enable or disable the Windows 7 administrator account.

The EASIEST way to enable or disable the Windows 7 build in administrator account
is from the command line. Open a command prompt with administrator rights.
This is done by right-clicking on the command prompt icon in the Windows 7 start
menu and selecting Run As Administrator from the available options.

To enable the Windows 7 administrator account:

net user administrator /active:yes

To disable the Windows 7 administrator account:

net user administrator /active:no

To change the password of the Windows 7 administrator account:

Net user administrator password

An alternative would be to enable or disable the Windows 7 administrator account using the Local Security Policy option. You can open the Local Security Policy by launching secpol.msc from the run box.

You find the option under Local Policies-> Security Options. Just change the SETTING Accounts: Administrator account by double-clicking the entry

Solve : Windows Vista and 7 Connectivity Problem...?

Answer»
I can't ACCESS internet in our domain using Windows Vista or Windows 7 OS. My unit says "Local Access Only". Wired or wireless, I've got the same issue. I have tried to google the issue but I only found 1 answer which is fixing the registry of the concerned unit by manually editing the Registry or running the "fix it tool" of Microsoft; unfortunately the fix it tool of Microsoft can not complete the process and produce only error in deployment. The error is DUE to DHCP Broadcast Flag which is not set to certain values the way it should be. My question is how can I fix the problem... what if we migrated completely to Windows Vista or 7,,, should change all the units one by one or there should be a configuration in my Windows 2000 Server to formally ADDRESS the issue at once.

Looking forward for your help... THANKS in advance.. Quote
change all the units one by one or there should be a configuration in my Windows 2000 Server to formally address the issue at once.
You may have answered your own question.
Wait, there is a know issue with Vista.
Quote
Consider the following scenario:
    * You connect a Windows Vista-based computer to a network.
    * A router or other DEVICE that is configured as a Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) server is configured on the network.
    * The router or the other device does not support the DHCP BROADCAST flag.
In this scenario, Windows Vista cannot obtain an IP address.
Windows Vista cannot obtain an IP address from certain routers or from certain non-Microsoft DHCP servers

This might apply to you.Windows Vista cannot obtain an IP address from certain routers or from certain non-Microsoft DHCP servers

that's the issue I'm talking about... it should not be on our server because were using the ones from Microsoft... and for the router, were using linksys'... the same router that other branch have...

I can't even manage to join it on our domain... I haven't tried this step provided by microsoft yet... the manual one

Solve : Live mail and att.net setup?

Answer»

I shot my pc and bought a HP laptop with windows 7 Home Premium. I use At&t.net for my e-mail. Up till now I always used Outlook Express with no problems. I am having no LUCK with Live Mail accepting my att. (Yahoo) setup with incoming or outgoing mail.

As usual and HELP will be appreciated

Just kidding about shooting my pc. Using it now to send this. Are the POP3 and SMTP settings correct ? ?
I may be wrong but i don't think LiveMail will work on Yahoo accounts without tweaking...Yes, I have checked and rechecked. I think you are right about the tweaking. I checked the port nos. and they are set at the recommended numbers. I went to the att.net WEBSITE and they still use the numbers for pop3 etc.Is this what you have?: What are the POP email settings for ATT email?Yes, they are the settings that att still recommends.I suggest you export your email account from Outlook Express, since your email account works in OE. It will be saved as a file with the extension, .iaf. Copy that file to a flash drive and then import it into Windows Live Mail ATT, Yahoo, SBC, DSL email settings

   1. Change the POP server to pop.att.yahoo.com.
   2. Change the SMTP server to smtp.att.yahoo.com.
   3. Check the option labeled Use an ENCRYPTED connection (SSL) and change the SMTP port to 465.
   4. Check the option labeled Use an encrypted connection (SSL) and change the POP3 port to 995.
Quote from: cyborg3 on April 21, 2010, 12:20:19 PM

Yes, they are the settings that att still recommends.
Actually, that reference was not a good one since it has several conflicting comments on the correct settings. So, what do you mean by "Yes, they are the settings that att still recommends."?Might try Thunderbird. I use it am very happy with it.

http://www.mozillamessaging.com/en-US/thunderbird/

Alan <>< Creating an email in WLM can be very easy, at least with some ISP's. As http://www.freeemailtutorials.com/windowsLiveMail/setupEmailAccounts/ says, "Windows Live Mail only requires three fields of information to try to automatically setup an email account for you:". The three fields are email address, password, and Display Name. By just entering those three elements in the new email account setup wizard, WLM will attempt to collect and test your email account information.

I created an account in WLM this way. It couldn't be easier. I don't know what I did but I got it to work. I went back and started from scratch using the settings that at&t had on their support pages. I must of had a mistake in something I put a check mark in or left one out where there should have been one. I also did it when I wasn't tired.

I am going to copy and paste what you suggested on this post just so I will have a record of what to do the next time.

As always, thank you for your help. Your suggestions made me think. Getting old ain't for wimps.

Solve : One particular website pages loading slowly or not at all?

Answer»

I have for the past 8 to 10 years been a member of a particular website forum. I currently have a fairly new Dell with Window 7, IE8, duel processors and 4GB of RAM. On the website forum I'm speaking of, the pages will load perfectly from 4:00 a.m. to about 9:00 a.m. When the site starts getting busy the pages will not load at all some time and other times will load very slowly.

Most everyone that comment on the site state that it's a browser issue and if I changed to Firefox browser the problem will go away. I don't know much about internet systems but if it were a browser issue then I would have the problem all of the time. It seems more like a bandwidth issue than a browser problem. Other site I frequent do not have the same problem. Can anyone SHED some light on this topic? Why don't you tell us (1) your time zone (2) what the forum is. Then maybe we can have a try. Have you tested with another browser or not? I suggest you do this, even though your reasoning appears to indicate it is not a browser issue.

Sure! The site I spend the most time on is www.hdforums.com/forum/index.php
I am in the Central US time zone.

I would not be at all surprised to find out an ISP may have something to do with these TYPE issues. Is that at all possible? Do Internet Service Providers have band width restraints that could have an affect on things like I'm having issues with?

All things said and done there isn't much I can do about it with any possible outside controlling factors. We have very limited choices with ISP's.WELL, I just tried it from England (Europe) where the time is 17:29 British Summer Time (16:29 UTC) and it seemed OK.

Well, I just tried it from England (Europe) where the time is 17:29 British Summer Time (16:29 UTC) and it seemed OK.

You are correct. It's working for me as well right now. That's what I can’t figure out. I DOUBT there is a factor that's any more constant than my OS. Most of the variables are the cables, servers, modems at server to the internet and of course the website and their ISP. So there are lots of variables.

I've actually talked with 2 or 3 different people from other parts of the country almost simultaneously and each one of them can get significantly different results. From the info GIVEN i doubt it's a browser issue...sounds like it's on their end.

Solve : Desktop Shadows on Windows 7?

Answer»

I loaded 7 at the START and like it but it now has developed shadows on the desktop. I have followed various instructions unchecking show shadows under windows and use drop shadows under icons but I still get HORRIBLE horizontal shadows to the right of the icons. Opening up Documents and other windows the text is very faint, web page text is faint too. All this comes and goes - sometimes when I switch on it is fine, few shadows and good depth of text colour then all of a sudden it all goes shadowy and faint - is it my graphics card? It's either your graphics card, monitor, or graphics card driver. (Personally I'd suspect the FORMER two).

best WAY to isolate the real cause is to try ANOTHER monitor- if the issue persists, it's your graphics card or it's driver (the latter you can eliminate/confirm by installing a newer version), otherwise, it's the monitor. Right Click My Computer

Select Advanced System Settings from the Left Pane

Select Settings under Performance

Under Visual Effects , remove the check from 'Use Drop Shadows for Icon Labels on the Desktop '.

Solve : How to Install Windows 7 Language Pack?

Answer»

Follow the given instructions for installing the Windows 7 Language Pack:
STEP 1: You can access the Control Panel through the Start Menu.
STEP 2: Then select Change Display language under the Clock, Language, and Region Box. If you’re in Classic View, select Regional and Language Options.
STEP 3: MAKE sure you’re on the keyboards and Languages tab and click on Install/Uninstall Languages.
STEP 4: Select the 2nd option and locate to your DVD drive or where you had previously extracted the ISO. You only need to move to the directory in which the windows 7 language pack is in. For some reason, the ISO doesn’t show up as a selectable option. (Microsoft may offer these language packs as optional updates in the near future).
STEP 5: Click Open and Windows will automatically search the language pack. You need to ACCEPT the End User License Agreement (EULA) and Install the Language Pack. This may take several minutes.
STEP 6: Once you’re completed, you’ll be PROMPTED if you want to switch to the installed language pack.
Whenever you change language packs, you will have to log off and log back in for the changes to take into effect. In the future when you want to change language packs that have already been installed, go back to the “Keyboards and Languages” tab under Regional and Language Options and you should be able to select from a menu of different language packs.
And why did you post this all over the net?

Solve : Vista Boot Loop?

Answer»

Howdy:

I'm working on an hp laptop running vista. Windows updates were being downloaded when it lost power. Now when it is powered on, the os boots and it goes directly to the "downloading updates" where it left off and runs for a moment and reboots. I tried "Last Known Good Configuration" with no luck and now I'm running AVIRA rescue boot av. Meanwhile, I'm writing this and wondering what you might try next?

Thanks,
Scott Quote from: McGuire on April 19, 2010, 07:35:17 PM

Howdy:
Windows updates were being downloaded when it lost power.

Was it unplugged by accident ? Battery run out ? Storm ?

http://www.memtest86.com/download.html

Download memtest86 (using a different computer of course) Get the Windows ISO zip file. Then download/install Image Burn (it's free). Run Image Burn and select "Burn Image To Disc" Put a new CD in the laptop and select the ISO file you just downloaded and burn the ISO image. Boot off the disc and let it run for a couple of hours. If it reports and "errors" then you've got some bad ram...Before you use memtest86, go back to the Advanced Boot Options menu (where you selected "last known good...") and select "disable automatic restart on system failure", let the computer REBOOT. If by some chance your computer is blue-screening, instead of restarting, it will display a message with a bunch of gibberish. If this is the case, post what the gibberish says on your next post, if not, proceed to the memory test...Thanks a bunch EEVIAC. I did download memtest86 and ran it from boot. There were two 1GB sticks in this laptop; the first test showed errors so I ran tests on each stick separately and only one is bad.

This is a friend's laptop and I keep forgetting to ask how it lost power while doing the windows updates, I assume it was the battery?

Anyway, I left the one good ram in and tried it and it is still has the same problem. The windows LOGO comes up and then it goes right to the "downloadind updates" screen and runs for a few minutes and then shuts off and reboots. I tried running in safe mode and get the same thing. I'm not sure what to try next ... any thoughts?Boot the laptop into Safe Mode and see if you can get it to do a system restore..

If that doesn't do you any good, boot up your installation DVD and do a repair installation..

If that doesn't work, post the make/model of your laptop so we can proceed to hard drive diagnostics...

I tried a system restore but there was no restore point (strange). I did a repair from the install disc and it said it did not need repair. Now, I have the hd connected to my desktop with a usb hd adapter and doing a chkdsk /r and defrag ... I don't EXPECT it will fix anything THOUGH. The hd is a Toshiba 120GB and toshiba has no hd diagnostics.

The laptop is an hp dv9233cl. Right when it is loading the os, the windows update (... "installing update 3 of 3" ... or something like that) comes up, runs for a minute and reboots.

Sure appreciate your help eeviac, any other thoughts are welcome.

Scotthttp://iso.linuxquestions.org/knoppix/knoppix-5.1.1/

download this Linux ISO file and burn it with Image Burn..(select burn image to disc)

Boot off the disc and press "enter" to allow the computer to boot into linux.. If it boots up without problems, then the problem is with your hard drive, if it doesn't boot up, then the problem is something other than your hard drive (motherboard maybe)

Despite the outcome, you've got yourself a good Linux disc, now.. Knoppix did work, so did Avira rescue boot and BartPE. So I guess that only leaves the hd.

The only other thing I thought to try is a clean install of Vista. Do you think that would be a waste of time?

Thanks again for your help…
Are you able to access files and stuff on the drive when its connected to the other computer ? If so, the drive may not be bad. It may just be a software issue..

Try running a Malwarebytes scan on the drive, when it's hooked up to the other computer.. Get your important files off the drive, while you're at it.. Put them on a thumb drive or the computer..

If we can avoid reinstalling, you may like this better..Thanks ... yeah, I can access files and have already backed up. I've run Avira and AVG av already with no infections.

If malware comes up clean, I'm not sure where to go next. It's something about that Win Update app? Who knows, maybe it'll work when I put the hd back in?

I'll have to work on it a little later now as I have to take off for a few. I guess just try reinstalling, if you're backed up... good luckPut the hard drive back into the laptop.

Boot to your vista cd.

Choose command prompt from the list of options.

At the C prompt type:
cd Windows\WinSXS
and press enter.

Then type:
del pending.xml
and press enter

Restart the computer and boot to the hard drive.
Same problem?I ended up reinstalling vista and it kept the old files so all is well.

I sure appreciate all the help I got here...It would have been interesting to see what happened with JJ's suggestion... oh, well

glad you got it working

Solve : Building a Computer for a Programmer C#?

Answer»

Hey,
I have to build a virtual computer for a programmer that WOULD use C # and pick out all the hardware, software and things I would need for if I was actually building it. Can anyone help me out and GIVE me some advice.
Thanks,
TyIt may be just me but i do not understand the question...There are no special hardware REQUIREMENTS for a programmer, aside from those of the development environment, but even then, you could PROGRAM in C# using NOTEPAD and compile using the command line, which would work on any XP capable machine.

Solve : OS won't boot?

Answer»

Hi, I built a system and used it for a year before this problem came up. When I turn it on it doesn't go to the DESKTOP. I get the BIOS screen and then the screen that shows the PCI Device Listings and then the Windows Error Recovery screen. When I hit Start Windows Normally it goes to a black screen that says Microsoft Corp. and has a green bar that is scrolling. then it shows a LINE that says
!! 0xc0000034 !! 3600/53049 (x86_microsoft-windows-smartcardsubsystem_...)
this screen blinks and nothing more happens. I have to hold the power BUTTON to get it to shut down. Any help would be appreciated.
My components are:
EVGA nForce 680i LT SLI mb
Intel Core 2 Quad cpu
Ultra X2 550w PS
4Gb Crucial Ram
XFX 8600 GTS video card
Soundblaster X-Fi soundcard
Maxtor 200Gb HDOpen up the case, leaving it plugged in..

Power on the computer and check if all fans are spinning, and listen for any weird sounds... awkward clicks, squealing sounds, and such..

If anything is unusual, post back with that info.

If not, power off the computer, leaving the case open... Reseat the ram modules, video card and all PSU CONNECTORS and reboot the computer... Is there improvement ?In your next post, COULD you please include the VERY LONG part # of the ram modules you're using... For example: Crucial BL2KIT12864AL804

edit: be sure you unplug the computer, before you reseat everything!

Solve : Could this be a Bios error??

Answer»

Hi All!, I'm unable to (re)load Win 7 onto my PC. I get as far as entering the Prod. Code then am told it is not the correct code. I know it is, but M/S says not. It is exactly the same PC AS i originally installed this Op Sys on (except for a change of DVD drive). It is a retail copy. What's wrong, am I doing something wrong here? I have tried to install XP ((twice again retail) & get 'Error loading Operating System' each time. I have run Memtest twice with no errors. Every time I restart POST says 'Overclock failed, set defaults'. I have not overclocked anything & the boot order has changed back to Floppy 1st. I am now at a loss as to what to do. Specs as per 'Specs' Alexma A part of the problem could be a BIOS configuration error.

Is this a desktop pc that you are having these problems with?

If you have never messed with RAM and CPU timings and voltages, and don't have hardware RAID configured it will be safe to reset the BIOS back to defaults. You can do this by either removing the CMOS battery for a few minutes or there may be a jumper beside the CMOS chip you can use.

You will bebable to tell if the reset has succeeded because your date and time will be out. These will need to be reset.

One big problem people have had in the past with Microsofts product key is differentiating between the number 8 and the letter B. I myself toiled with a product key for hours a few yeare ago before I realised I was misreading the code. Power down the machine and remove all power sources...
Open a side panel and remove the CMOS battery for 10 minutes...

Replace the battery re-plug and power up and try the install again.
NOTE: If it fails the 2nd time replace the CMOS battery...Part # CR2032 ,,,available anywhere,Thanks Patio, but I have already done that (renewed battery) reset time & date etc. During install it gets a far as the second restart, then crashes & tries to start win. At the moment it is saying ''Replacing invalid security id with default security id for file####' and scrolling thru all the files. I will leave it to do this for a while. alexma,

You haven't described the configuration of your system and exactly what you are trying to do.

Is the system a DUAL boot XP & Windows 7?

Are there multiple HDDs? Or is it one partitioned to accomodate 2 OSs?

The reason I ask is I recently performed a malware repair on a PC which was giving out a system configuration error which had nothing to do with the power on self test, but appeared before the operating system fully loaded. I performed a repair install of the OS then some system recovery and the PC was good as gold.

I'm not suggesting the symptoms are identical, but it will help to remedy the problem if more info is supplied.

Do you have data you need to preserve?Hi All, Sorry about the delay in ANSWERING. I changed the DVD drive as it would not respond to any 'Auto run' settings nor would it load the driver/utility for my sound card, also if I tried to instal Ms Office Pro, would immediatly get a BSOD. I also assumed this to be the reason Win 7 would not load. During several attempts to install W7 I got a Checkdisc should be run request. This I did 4 times. S.M.A.R.T. reported all ok. As I do'nt have a spare SATA drive I hooked up a 80Gb EIDE drive & tried that. Win 7 loaded perfectly!!I have ordered a new 500Gb HDD (SATA) which has just arrived and am loading Win on it now. OK, it installed with no problems except that now, when I enter the prod. key it says The S'ware Licencing Service determined that this specified Prod. Key can only be used for UPGRADING, not for clean installations. I originally did a clean install & yet another yesterday on another HDD (as prev. mentioned) Anyone know how I can proceed from here? Thanks in advance, AlexmaOK, All is working now. It must have been a faulty HDD causing all the trouble. This drive is just over 1 year old (Seagate), & I'm wondering if there is any warranty left? Anyone know? Best wishes to all and thank you. AlexmaSeagates are normally 5 years warranty...
That's why i buy basically theirs and Western Digitals....Thanks Patio, If I d/load & run the Seagate tool, will it tell me if it is faulty? Is there any other way it can be tested before I RMA it? Can HDDs cause a Blue Screen, because if so this could have been the cause of many of my previous problems? Regards AlexmaYes.
Seatools will do this...FREE.
Follow the guide for creating a bootable CD...
It's more accurate than running it from Windows. Please excuse me, but is the answer 'Yes' to both questions I asked? ie the Blue Screen andthe Seatools? SeaTools will tell you if the drive is bad or iffy...

BSOD's can be caused by hundreds of issues...

Sorry i didn't CLARIFY that.

ok. so a few weeks ago my computer wouldnt start in normal mode, only in safe mode. it is still under warranty so i CALLED and sent in my laptop to get fixed. I get it back and they say they had to replace a "board". it worked for about 4 days and then STARTED doing the same problem. It starts and gets to a loading screen with a TIMER bar and then the screen goes black and then the screen turns off. so i call the warranty place again and they tell me to do a system restore. this worked for about 2-3 weeks and now its doing the same thing as before. i tried doing a system restore again and it still doesnt work. so now IM clueless, cityassure sucks and will do anything to keep from replacing my laptop. so now im looking for help elsewhere.

Solve : installing Centos in vista using vitual machine?

Answer»

hi i WANT to USE centos in vista os using virtual machine.
i install VM. when i want to install centos it shows boot failure . do we have to do any thing in the storage field of the vm setting.

You don't really have to do anything in the storage field, it should create the virtual disk in the Centos folder that you downloaded and saved and should boot just FINE. Maybe you can download the OS again and OPEN the VM Player (i assume that is what you are using) Don't open Centos from the folder, open it from the VM Player. Have you TRIED Ubuntu in VM? It is much better than Centos.

These days I don't know what is safe to delete without it messing with anything else.

Thanks for you help. Download & run Mike Lin's Startup Control PANEL (http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml). Uncheck any ITEMS you don't want starting with the system.okay after you have booted up your computer and windows live messenger is on, open the window, click tools, options, then the sign in tab, uncheck the start up options, if you want to delete it, go to the control panel and PROGRAM removal area and find windows live and remove it, it shouldnt harm anything at all

Solve : windows 7 notification area?

Answer»

Hi, can someone help me with trying to get rid of a program listing in the notification area. There is no icon but the program is listed under the options dialogue box. The program documentation stated the program does not install, and can run as a portable app. The program was "arsclip" a clipboard replacement I wanted to try.

There is a couple of references to what sounds like my issue on the net and one suggestion was to remove 2 registry keys at
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\Local Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\TrayNotify
bu my registry doesnt have the keys mentioned.

Any Ideas? Its win7 home premium 32 BIT
REVO uninstaller should do the trick...If it was a portable app it may not have left pointers for an uninstall function, these programs should perform a clean-up on the removal of the portable media.

I would look at performing a system restore to before you run the application. This will at least reset any registry changes the software made. Quote from: licoriceallsorts on April 17, 2010, 01:05:59 AM

The Windows 7 notification area dialog box lists all programs that have ever showed an icon in that area, even programs you do not have any more. From what I can gather, to reset the notification area icons, you need to ADD that registry key if it is not already PRESENT, and 2 SUB keys with specific values

Absolutely right.

In ADDITION, if you do succeed (Hackintosh) it is against the Apple Mac EULA to run Mac on non Apple hardware. You have to have a real Mac (or emulate Mac, which MAY break the EULA as well, not sure on that) to run the Mac operating system.
But, Windows can be installed on Macs. Per http://www.apple.com/macosx/compatibility/, "Every new Mac lets you install Windows XP and VISTA and run them at native speeds, using a built-in utility called Boot Camp." Doesn't quite seem fair, does it?

Solve : MS Updates on Vista?

Answer»

Sorry peeps, but l'm STILL an avid XP user.
However a friend of mine is using Vista (not sure what sp version) and she says that every time an MS update comes along it reboots the system.
Is that true for Vista as it doesn't seem to happen in XP. Is there something in XP that is different than Vista?
ThanksSome UPDATES require a reboot, some don't. It's the same for ALL Microsoft OS's.Thanks Allan,
Yes l know that (so sorry Allan, that sound really flippant)
I think l've encountered a re-boot once or twice in XP as far as l can recall, but l believe it gave me the option of a restart now or later. Normally it seems to update when l close the computer down.
From the garbled message l got from my friend, it seemed that she was getting reboots lots of times whislt she was doing other things on the system. Can't see that somehow?
I just wondered whether anything was different between XP and VistaNope, not with updates. Vista also offers the option to restart immediately after the updates or to postpone. Same with W7I always re-boot...force of habit from the old days...I am unable to install a security update for Vista. This one is the only one not installing...After a restart it simply tells me that it failed to work and it is reverting back...I realize this is a very general question but what are some common reasons I am having difficulty? Thanks QUOTE from: PHILIP on April 15, 2010, 09:06:34 PM

Not that I know of. You'll need to boot off of a CD, so you can access the entire drive..

You really could just boot up your installation DVD and delete all the existing partitions and start over. There isn't really any performance "+" using Deriks Nuke and Boot... But do whatever you want..

Download and burn it on another computer, if necessary..

Solve : The one that solves this is legendary?

Answer»

ok, i'm using Vista

The program icons in my taskbar are showing up really SMALL

How do I fix it?

Here is the image of my DESKTOP explaining the problem (you MIGHT want to open the image in a new tab)

Right click an empty area of the taskbar, and select Properties.

Uncheck "use small icons" on the "taskbar" tab, and click Apply.Uhhhhhhh....

Where is it?

oh, you're using Vista, I missed that.

In that case, use regedit and NAVIGATE to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\ControlPanel\Desktop\WindowMetrics, and delete the "MinWidth" value.still the same...

You have to reboot for it to take effect.oh ok thanks

I'll reboot now

Solve : Upgrade xp to 7 and transfer program files?

Answer»

Howdy:

Maybe you can help me connect-the-dots?

I am upgrading 32-bit xp to 64-bit 7. If I backup program FILES, then install 7, then restore the program files onto 7, why won't the programs work? (I'm sure it hasn't something to do with the registry and, or drivers?)

I did find Microsoft's "Easy Transfer" utility which I will use, or just reinstall the programs; but mainly, I'm just trying to understand why a simple backup and restore wouldn't work?

Thanks.Almost all programs install certain settings into the registry (sometimes just a couple of entries, sometimes - as in the CASE of MS Office - literally hundreds of entries). Those registry entries are required for the programs to START and run. If you do an in place OS upgrade then in most CASES the programs will run. But if you are doing a clean install then you need to reinstall all programs. Thanks Allen.

I am doing a clean install. Are you familiar with "Windows Easy Transfer?" I wonder if I'll still have to reinstall programs or if that utility will do it for me?Windows Easy Transfer will allow you to migrate files and settings, but you can not transfer programs. You will need to reinstall all apps - which frankly you want to do anyway with a new install. Here you go: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-vista/features/easy-transfer.aspxThanks again! You're WELCOME. Good luck with the install and enjoy W7

Solve : Winows 7 always hangs on install?

Answer»

Hello, this is my first post so here goes.

This is a simple machine with only the CPU,vid card, two stick memory on Mobo. Here is a snapshot of the machine:

Low Cost homebrew Computer:sort of a copy of a Maximum PC Mags
economy build.

Hard Drive: Western Dig 1 tb 7k 64m sataIII

Sony Optical drive/DVD Burner

CPU:AMD Phenom 2 X3 720 Black Edition
Heka 2.8 GHz 3x512 kb L2 Cache 6MB L3 Cache
Socket AM3 95W Triple-Core Processor-OEM

MoBo:MSI 790X- G45 AM3 socket

Vid Card: g-GeForce 8800GT 512MB DDR3

Memory: Corsair 2 x 2GB Modules : DDR3 1600mz

PSU: Corsair 550 W

Monitor: Samsung Syncmaster 932b

Antec 300 case.

Windows Vista 64 bit hanging in there.

CPU,Mobo,PSU,HD are new and the rest of the stuff was
Laying about the house.

I originally tried to install a new OEM 64 bit copy of Windows 7 Home Premium on this new computer and it would go along and load all the files and then hang on the installing updates. So I would try it again and it would freeze up right at the beginning and so on but never getting past installing updates. You know, when the twirly blue thing stops moving.
So just for the heck of it I tried and was successful in installing a copy of vista 64 bit home premium on this machine so at least I know that my build does work . I am already using this copy of Vista on my other machine so I can't keep it there for long. So I figured that now that I
have Vista on this machine maybe it's smoothed out a little bit and I would be able to install 7 over Vista, like Upgrade,NOT. Windows 7 still buggy.
Any suggestions from all you fine computer experts out there. I have had stuff like this happen before and I have always ended up getting the problem solved but am hoping you guys can speed up the process.

               Thanks-Chris

What exactly do you mean by "oem" ?

You cannot use an INSTALLATION disk that came with a store-bought computer to install on a custom build.

Thanks for the reply. OEM means Original Equipment Manufacturer and is used by system builders to load into new machines. I buy it because it's cheaper than the full VERSION. It works just the same but you do not get fancy packaging and little support. In addition I believe you cannot transfer an OEM copy to another machine.

Sorry if I was not clear on my computer,it is a new computer that I am trying to install a new copy of windows 7 on.
Some of the components are not brand new but the build is and the heart of it is being the CPU,motherboard and hard drive.

I installed a copy of Vista Home Premium 64 bit just to see if it would work and it did but my goal is still to get Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit on board. Possibly the 32 bit version would install just fine, I don't know.
I must add that the copy of Vista that I installed on my new build is already being used on another computer that I have and so I have not connected with Microsoft for the latest updates because they would inform me that I am using a copy of Vista already registered to another computer.

Thanks for asking

ChrisI know what OEM is.. I was wondering what YOU meant by it.

Where did you get the disk from?http://www.msi.com/uploads/test_report/TR10_1916.pdf

It could be a memory compatibility issue.

This is the supported memory list for the board..

Corsair is listed, but only in a 1 Gigabyte module Quote from: EEVIAC on April 01, 2010, 05:59:22 AM

Where did you get the disk from?

Not relevant, as the ChrisG clarified what he meant by an OEM disc.

They can be bought from local computer stores, Newegg, Micro Center, Fry's, etc.

In any case, there could be a number of possibilities:
1) Bad disc.
2) Bad optical drive (unlikely, as other discs work, and genuine Vista and 7 discs are DVDs)
3) Bad SATA drivers (i.e.: if your motherboard's SATA mode is AHCI, and 7's drivers may be giving you grief--try loading the manufacturer's drivers from a thumb drive during install...or just switch SATA to legacy mode if you want to do that...)
4) As EEVIAC said, memory compatibility. You may want to flash the BIOS to address this one.
5) Bad RAM altogether. Download MEMTEST86+ (Google it), burn the ISO to a CD, and boot from the resulting CD. I'm with eeviac on this one... Quote from: killerb255 on April 01, 2010, 10:56:15 AM

Duh Thanks anyway, for setting me straight Quote from: patio on April 01, 2010, 11:46:26 AM
I'm with eeviac on this one...

As far as the RAM being the main suspect...i should have clarified that...You know, you guys are great, it's like having an encounter with the KRELL except I don't think I would live through the boost.

I purchased the Windows 7 OEM disk at Newegg.

I was considering going with 32bit as that may install without hardware hassles and I really don't need more than 6 gigs anyway. But that does not mean that I will ignore the memory issue. Should I just buy four 1gig sticks of DDR3? Some of the solutions are new to me but will enjoy trying this stuff out. Certainly getting deep into the bios will be SOMETHING new.

Thanks -Killerb 255,Patio and EEVIAC for your help.

I will keep you informed.
Chris

Since your board supports overclocking, go with DDR3 800 MHz. You can probably find some faster DDR3 memory that's not supported in the JEDEC standard, but it's up to you. Refer to the board manual for proper configuration of memory for dual channel setup. Generally that means you should buy modules of equal capacity, and install them into the correct "channels" on the board...

I'm not necessarily encouraging you to overclock your system, but it's always good to leave some room..

I suppose a bios update could help with compatibility but don't get your hopes up. Your bios M-Flash utility will provide a virtually risk-free method of updating the bios. Incase the update fails the bios can be booted from a thumb drive.Just a reminder.. remember to refer to the qualified memory list when making your selection. I didn't emphasize that in my previous post..Just remembered i've seen this before with Viata and 7...try the install again with only 1 stick of RAM and add the other later.lol I think I remember what thread you're taking about. It was a 6 pager....

Solve : Computer freezing at startup?

Answer»

Hi,

At work we have a computer that is starting to play up when booting. It's a high spec Acer with 4gb DDR3 RAM and Core 2 Duo processor and we've had it for about four months. We rarely use it and we booted it up this morning - fine, until we get to the desktop where it just becomes unresponsive. An issue with Windows Explorer it seems? We left it for an hour and still no luck in terms of accessing files - it just SAYS on all the windows, 'not responding'. I personally rarely use the PC, so it could be a virus infection. I've downloaded an AVG rescue disk, which I started, but never had time to get finished (so I don't know the results!). I did try safe mode (with no networking or command prompt) and it is still unresponsive at the desktop there.

Is this a common problem with vista that requires an easy fix, or does it sound LIKE a virus? If it sounds like a virus, then I'll start the scan again when i get in on tuesday. P.S. It looks as if Norton 360 and McAfee are both installed (which could be the cause), but I couldn't access any files, let alone control panel.

Any ideas? A quick reply would be appreciated. THANKS!anyone? QUOTE

'not responding'.
Sometimes programs and viruses can cause that . Other times, it might be hardware.

YES, having two anti-virus programs installed, with both being resident in memory at the same time, can have a negative impact on computer performance. Try disabling, or completely removing, one of them.

Solve : Purple lines. New computer :'(?

Answer»

Hai.

I have recently bought a new COMPUTER and within about half an hour of setting up the display suddenly froze and cut off into about 8 sections with vertical purple/black/white lines going across every other SECTION I have reinstalled my monitor, my wireless mouse and keyboard, windows live and then finally Windows 7.

I called Zoostorm about my problem and they told me they'd get back to me on Monday. He said something about a driver but trailed off.

My old computer was very old and it just gave out one day. I have been looking forward to using brand spanking new OS and general computer with more than 50 GB SPACE on the hard drive. This has completely crashed all my hopes. Could anyone suggest a solution?

Processor : Intel(R) Celeron(R) CPU E3300 2.50Ghz
Installed Memory (RAM) : 2.00 GB
System type : 64-bit Operating system.

Please help? I feel as if some cruel trick is being played. I'd return it... But in the mean time, we may be able to conjure something up for you..

What's the make/model of the computer ?

Is it using a video card or does it have video built into the motherboard ?Zoostorm Dual Core E3300 79104209

I'm very unimpressed by the support I've had from Zoostorm. Glad I bought that warranty. Quote from: Sladen on April 09, 2010, 06:10:36 AM

I'm very unimpressed by the support I've had from Zoostorm.

It's typical of some companies.

I was going to suggest re seating the video card, but yours is internal.

Do you have another monitor you can attach to the computer ? It would help determine whether the problem is your monitor OR motherboard/power supply. Trying another monitor CABLE might do the trick, if another monitor doesn't cut it..

You can also open the computer and disconnect/reconnect the power connectors that attach to the motherboard..

While your inside the computer, pull your ram out and re seat it, as well.

By the way, how many ram modules are installed ?  Your make/model description was a little vague.  You listed the Make, and then the processor model..Plugged in my ancient monitor. Usually it happens if I open Windows Live or Browse too quickly. Hasn't done it yet. > <;

You're a genius. I'm going to swap the wires over and see if me new monitor works with me old monitor cable.

Excuse my stupidity but does this mean there's something wrong with my monitor/monitor cable so I've been on the phone to the wrong company? Quote from: Sladen on April 09, 2010, 06:36:21 AM

ahhh, don't mention it.

Not too sure how to find out those things.

Went to swap the monitor cables only to find my previous monitor so old it's connected internally. xD

I have RECONNECTED my new monitor to my computer and checked everything is connected properly in hope I didn't connect them properly the first time. Fingers crossed.

Thanks for all your help. Quote from: Sladen on April 09, 2010, 07:01:18 AM

don't worry about it, now. It's not relevant.

You're welcome Quote

I think it mght be now.

New monitor had the same problem. Called the manufacturer and they're sending me a new one.
I plugged in my old one and began using that only for it to happen to that too. Joy.

Back to the drawing board. I wouldn't mess with it anymore. It just occurred to me that if you open the computer case it could void the warranty..

Solve : "Not responding" - What happened??

Answer» EVERY once and awhile I'll click on something and Internet Explorer will stop and freeze and I get the message "not responding." How do I find out what is happening or happened? Is something not working like it should?Quite clearly something is not working as it should. When you see that message try CLOSING the message box by CLICKING on the "x" in the top right corner - very often Explorer does not really need to close. Meanwhile, try to take note of what you are clicking on next time it happens (is it something USING flash, JAVA, etc) and post back. Can we forget about the not responding problem because that hardly ever happens anyway. But I do have a new problem.

My snipping tool has disappeared. I had it on my desktop as a shortcut and when I click on it I get an error box. I tried look for it on the computer in the accesories section but could not find it.

Solve : Whirring Noise?

Answer»

I have read the thread on the possibility of this issue being a dirty fan. I have cleaned the whole fan area & all other areas that I am able to do so in. I have also tightened any screws which may have been loose in conjunction with this issue. The whirring SOUND is not always present. Many times it will take 15 to 20 MINUTES for it to begin. As a test, I have laid the UNIT on it's side when the whirring noise OCCURS. When I do this, the noise ceases. This is not my primary computer but I use it as a backup to my windows 7. It is a Dell, E521 with the following:

AMD Athlon Processor- 3500 2.2gh
958 MB Ram
32 Bit Operating System
Windows Vista

I am hoping someone can give me a definitive answer as to whether this is definitely a fan issue or could be something ELSE. Any help will be greatly appreciated.Run the system with the cover off and see if you can identify the location of the noise. Be careful not to touch anything inside while it is plugged in to power. Is there a cable near a fan? It may be coming into contact with the fan, and when you move the computer it then breaks contact.
It could also be a fan that's in need of replacing.
