Solve : Can't change desktop shortcut Icons.? |
Answer» Hi I just recently installed Windows 7on my computer. I am trying to personalize the desktop and had downloaded a few icons for my shortcuts and changed them with no problem. When I shut down the computer and rebooted the next day these icons were gone and just LEFT the generic ICON . I cannot change them back. When I go into change icon off the properties tab It shows that its changed but on the desktop it is not. Any ideas on the problem and how to fix this. |

Solve : No “properties” when right clicking image in a web page? |
Answer» Hello all, Does View Image Info not do what you want?To some extent. It gives pixels X pixels but not total size or the top link. Being lazy, I like to have that information when cutting and pasting images just by right clicking. kpak, The FF addon did it. It never occurred to me that FF would remove features. I don’t care what anybody sez, you guys are OK. Again, Thanks for your time and effort. Quote from: songdongnigh on April 06, 2010, 05:08:16 PM To some extent. It gives pixels X pixels but not total size or the top link. Being lazy, I like to have that information when cutting and pasting images just by right clicking. The only thing missing out of those for me is the top link; it shows me Location, Type, Size, and Dimensions. It probably doesn't show the link since it's displaying the image info; the link will be shown in the statusbar when you hover over the image. |

Solve : Accidentally Unchecked 'Always Ask Before Opening' in Outlook? |
Answer» This used to be an EASY fix in XP... Seems to me you NEED to spend some time getting this all sorted out in your head first and then try posting again. Your first post here reflects a lack of a clear understanding by by your of your problem. First, while it's possible to send an HTML file as an attachment, it's unusual to do so; more likely, someone would just put the URL to a website in an email message. So, I suspect you've got the facts wrong there. Also, the link you posted to a reference does not pertain to Outlook. It pertains solely to IE. And, I have the impression this is really where your question lies; I suspect your question pertains to downloading with IE and how to make IE, not Outlook, ask you "Always ask before opening this type of file". My head is quite sorted, thank you. I do indeed "have a clear understanding by by my of my problem". I described a specific concern, YET you "suspect" it isn't what I asked, but rather what I said specifically it is NOT? Interesting. Again: I received an email in Outlook with an .html attachment. I accidentally clicked "Always Ask Before Opening", and I don't want that. My search for help - to attempt to solve the problem myself before posting here - only turned up articles about IE, NOT Outlook. I need a suggestion for Outlook. I believe the sentence in my post that read "I found many articles... that tell me how to fix it If I'm using IE, but I'm not - I'm using Outlook" indicated my understanding that the literature I was finding was not helpful to me. So... How can I tell Outlook 2007, in a machine running Windows 7, how to re-confirm NEXT time I receive an .html attachment that I would like to be asked before opening? (Or any type of attachment, for that matter?) (btw, it's NOT unusual for travel companies to send confirmations as .html documents.)Windows Vista and Windows 7 Ask again before opening http://www.msoutlook.info/question/352 You can also try this tip.... http://www.msoutlook.info/question/80 Spoiler: I'd seen that last night, but it seemed that it was the exact OPPOSITE of what I was trying to accomplish - it was for folks who didn't have the option to turn off notification, but wanted to. Salmon (if that IS your real name): I will try that. I hadn't found that exact piece, but I'd seen lots of stuff suggesting regedit, which always worries me. But I will give it a try and let you know. Thanks, both. So that worked, Salmon. Begs the question - was that an Outlook-only solution, or does it affect ALL times I try to launch .html files. That's not that frequently, so no big whoop. Thanks again. Quote from: rjbinney on July 06, 2011, 12:17:44 PM I'd seen that last night, but it seemed that it was the exact OPPOSITE of what I was trying to accomplish - it was for folks who didn't have the option to turn off notification, but wanted to. Yes, I'd noticed that. Quote Salmon (if that IS your real name): No, it isn't. It is the name of a railway locomotive, a Gresley A1 Pacific of the London and North Eastern Railway. It was a member of a class of locomotives mostly named after racehorses. "Salmon Trout" won the 1924 St Leger race in England. Quote I'd seen lots of stuff suggesting regedit, which always worries me. But I will give it a try and let you know. Just follow the instructions exactly and remember you can always cancel and back out if you aren't sure. Quote from: rjbinney on July 06, 2011, 12:28:58 PM So that worked, Salmon. Begs the question - was that an Outlook-only solution, or does it affect ALL times I try to launch .html files. That's not that frequently, so no big whoop. For each registered file type, there is a registry value called "Editflags" which contains 4 BYTES. As far as I can see, the lowest bit of the third byte governs whether permission is asked to open an attachment of that file type. If the bit is a 1 then permission is not asked. if the bit is 0 then it is. It certainly affects Outlook; it might affect any email client which is the default mail handler. |

Solve : My laptop makes a clicking sound on its own? |
Answer» IT sounds like a new web page is opened SAS and Spybot are both antispyware and you should not use them both. Secondly, Spybot is outdated so you should keep SAS and add another anti malware software http://www.malwarebytes.org/products/malwarebytes_free. Make sure to uninstall Spybot then try making a full scan on SAS and Mbam alternately after updating both security softwares. There is absolutely no reason NOT to use multiple anti spyware programs. I'm not a FAN of spybot, but there certainly no reason not to use it along with SAS. And why would you say he can't use two anti malware programs and then tell him to use SAS and MalwareBytes? And what does any of this have to do with the clicking problem? ayuban2 - the current best of breed malware apps are MalwareBytes and Super AntiSpyware. Either or both of those are my recommendation. As for the clicking sound, from where does it sound like it originates?Allan-The sound COMES from the speakers and after i used the MalwareBytes the sound still continues.Exactly when do you hear the sound (what action precipitates the sound)?http://www.winhelponline.com/blog/disable-start-navigation-clicking-sound-in-ie/I'm not sure, but usually when I am connected to the internet and I hear three clicks. You could always undo any settings on the given LINK so its always best to follow it first. Also, please provide as much info. on what particular browser, websites. Are these certain clicks on SITES with many Advertisements posted or being loaded? |

Solve : picasa will not work on windows 7 64 bit computer? |
Answer» I wonder if anyone here has any idea why picasa will not work on windows 7- 64 bit. I copied all the picture folders and put them on the new windows 7 computer. I then opened Picasa thinking it would LOAD all the pictures and nothing happened, it is just blank. Every time I open Picasa on the new computer, it is as if I am installing it again. Then it is just blank. I tried making a new folder on the new computer and copying and PASTING the pics in there thinking it may have something to do with the folders being copied from the old computer, but that didn't help. I have done RESEARCH but can't come up with anything apparantley no one else has had this problem lol.. I don't know what else to check for. Maybe an update??? Not sureWell, Picasa works fine on my 64 bit Windows 7 system. Try uninstalling and then downloading it again and reinstalling it. Possibly you need to take ownership of the picture folders that you copied. |

Solve : Win7 won't boot after motherboard change? |
Answer» Hi, I never experienced this when I have done motherboard changes in the past. Windows XP would just report "new device found" and would load the appropriate drivers. interesting Those other boards might have been very similar to each other enabling one hal driver to work for all, so to speak..What you performed is a Startup Repair...which will only fix issues with the bootloader etc. but not your issues.... Repair Install of Win7 I suggest reading it thru 1st and printing a reference copy before starting. Done properly all your data and apps will be intact.... Good Luck.Considering that the link states that Windows 7 can only be repair-installed from within the OS itself, I don't think this will be an option for jkolak... In general, changing out the motherboard usually will result in a BSOD. The main reason are because of the hard drive controller and motherboard chipset, but other factors certainly do come into play. For those of you who have changed your motherboards out without problems, it's usually because the motherboard's hard disk controller and/or the chipset are the same. Repair-installing was certainly an option with Windows XP if you get a BSOD, as long as: 1) The CD you're repair-installing from has the same edition as your BSOD'd OS (i.e.: if your BSOD'd OS is XP Professional, use an XP Professional disc to repair). 2) The CD you're repair-installing from is at the same Service Pack level or higher. 2) The CD you're repair-installing from has the exact same version of Internet Explorer as your BSOD'd OS (which usually means a slipstream is necessary with a third-party utility like nLite--no official XP disc has IE7 or IE8 integrated). For Windows 7, your best bet is to try and change your hard disk controller driver in Device Manager to a generic one before trying to swap the motherboard. Even then, you may run into problems... Overall, it's not worth repair-installing anymore, as NT6 puts you in a Catch 22 with it anyway (can't get to the OS to run the repair-install!). If Startup Repair doesn't work, and you don't have access to the original motherboard, then your best bet is to back up the data and format. Thanks everyone! What a learning experience this has been! So the death of a motherboard is really a system fatality since Windows cannot launch after repair. I'm really, really surprised that with all the sophisticated recovery tools included in Windows, that they have not developed a provision to recover from this situation. Seems easy enough, just like a fresh install is able to deal with a wide variety of hardware. I think really, they should allow a repair install from the DVD bootup. As it TURNS out, it wasn't as bad as it could have been. I had already redirected My Documents to the second partition, so I only had to copy C:\users to D: (using the Ubuntu live CD). I had forgotten about Windows 7 and drivers. Foxconn must not be very common as the ethernet adaptor and audio were not working when finished. Luckily the old Foxconn drivers worked okay under Windows 7, so the system is up and running now. Now to get on to reinstalling software.... I have exact same problem and motherboard was replaced by exact same model. So I believe the problem lead to Windows 7 copy protection feature. Certain checksum fails so it can't boot. I do not understand why Microsoft doesn't provide simple repair procedure for this case. Unfortunately my original Windows 7 DVD got lost and now I am trapped in the situation. I need to contact PC seller for DVD replacement and it is hard procedure. Why Microsoft can't make things easier? Solve : winrar? |
Answer» OK. Find a RAR file....rite clik it and select Open with....check what app you want associated with it. I think he means Zip files... Just going by what he stated... Quote from: patio on July 09, 2011, 11:13:48 AM Just going by what he stated... I admit this question had me puzzled for a moment (Windows compression? RAR?) until I remembered that WinRAR* can be associated with plenty of other archive types than just its own RAR (Roshal ARrchive) format. It can open and extract from at least 14 types of archive and in addition it can create archives in both RAR and Zip formats. At the end of installing WinRAR the user is presented with the file association option dialog with these extensions ALREADY checked: RAR, Zip, CAB, ARJ, LZH, ACE, 7-Zip, TAR, GZip, UUE, BZ2, Z. If they just click OK then WinRAR will be associated with those archive types, and files with those extensions will be shown in Windows Explorer as files of type e.g. if Zip was left checked then Zip files will show as "WinRAR Zip Archive" in Windows Explorer and will have the WinRAR icon. Windows XP, Vista and W7 compression USES the Zip archive format. To remove the zip association from WinRAR it is merely necessary to uncheck the appropriate box in the WinRAR settings dialog under the "Integration" tab (and then click OK) as seen in the image I posted above. * This is the official spelling! |

Solve : Remote Desktop Connection to Windows Vista Home Premium? |
Answer» 1) Is it true that it's not possible to remote desktop connect to a computer running Windows Vista Home Premium? 2) Is it true that it's not possible to remote desktop connect to a computer running Windows Vista Home Premium, no matter what hacks you use (including the .dll replacement to allow the 'regular remote desktop' on it)? Thanks. What in the name of wild world of sports are you trying to do ? ? Lmao. Doesn't it seem obvious? I'm trying to connect to a Vista Home Premium computer on the network via remote desktop... =P. I just READ on the internet some people used hacked .dll's to fix the RD problem. I don't know if this FIXES the actual 'cannot-remote-desktop-to-vista-home-versions' problem, if there is one. I think it's funny I put an explicit title and I ask explicit, closed QUESTIONS yet instead of firmly ANSWERING them you start asking more questions.. really, do you need to ask those questions, to answer mine? So.. do you know the answers? It's DISABLED in Home...this is by design. |

Solve : How hot is too hot for a laptop? |
Answer» I just wanted to ask the question cause I have noticed my laptop getting really hot depending on what I am doing on it. When I am using it low demand uses (i.e. internet, file browsing etc.) the laptop does get pretty warm (a little but warmer than you would feel under a blanket) but when I am using it for high demand uses (i.e. GAMES and saving movies from Windows Live Movie Maker) if I an not careful about it the laptop can get so hot that it feels like it is starting to burn you. Would this kind of HEAT (mainly high demand uses) damage the computer in anyway as in destroying the graphics card and processor and could this be the reason why I can SEE a visible change in what graphic settings I used to run compared to run now and FPS rates for video games How hot is too hot for a laptopquestion, the maximum internal temp usually ranges anywhere from 140°F to 160°F, but I suppose that changes with each computer... Either way though, sounds to me like the port through which the fan dumps out the hot air might be clogged (or kind of like what reddevilggg said, it's just as probable that the cooler air from the outside is never getting all the way to the inside if the vent/intake is being blocked by... [anything]). Do you have dogs/cats? Lots of times their hair can get sucked in through the intake and end up clogging up the exhaust vent(s)... Just a thought. Good luck! Has been cleaned by some compressed air but never opened up. Been a year and seven months since I got itHere are the readings from what SpeedFan said Low Demand Usage (Cpu usage between 5 and 25 average for test 10) HD0: 38 C Temp1: 50 C Temp2: 47 C Temp3: 53 C Core 0: 42 C Core 1: 41 C High Demand Usage (Cpu Usage above 25 average for test 93.7) HD0: 43 C Temp1: 77 C Temp2: 61 C Temp3: 67 C Core0: 70 C Core1: 76 C The fan speeds and voltages would not SHOW up for some reason. And I did have the Automatic fan speed box checked off while doing so. NOTE: That every one of the Temp and Core either showed a flame or a red arrow pointing up through the whole test except for after I had completed the high demand test with the exception of Temp3 which remained the flame and about 10min after Temp1 is flashing between the green check mark and the red arrow pointing up. NOTE: The HD0 had a green check mark the whole TIME during the test until the very end of the High demand test. Then after the high demand test it stayed the red arrow pointing up the rest of the time i was on my computer It is on a flat, solid surface with the air vent at least 1ft away from all objects around it (other than the table) And the start tempature is about 71 F cause that is what the air temp is in my house. Also with the install of the program will this mess with my fan if I choose to unistall it at a later date The min / max temp ranges for your processor are between 0-105 C Personally, i think Laptops generally get to hot when they're used as desktops. Laptop are meant to be a portable workstation. Maybe try a cooling pad.I really do use this for a work computer mostly for school and surfing the internet. But sometimes in school I have to make a video and I use Windows Live Movie Maker. And when saving a movie on that you CPU usage could get up to 100% But I very rarely play high demand games on my laptop |

Uninstall and Reinstall the .NET framework 4.0.I think I covered that ALREADY Been kind of hectic, sorry for not getting back sooner. Well, the whole thing is moot. Because of the software installed and the confidential nature of the work done on the machine, the DOE has used MUCH stricter security on it that on other administrative machines. It is so strict that I can not even update Adobe Reader because I don't have an administrative account on the main server. Even when logged onto the local machine it asks for an administrative account and password on the main server. Can't uninstall or install anything. So, I called it in to the DOE help desk and the technician will let me know how it GOES. Thanks again.Just give the Tech the advice you have recieved here... Best of Luck... |

Solve : After power outage, desktop computer will lock up after ~5-10 minutes of usage? |
Answer» Greetings everyone, When it freezes, what do you do? Can you immediately restart or do you have to shutdown and wait for some time before starting again? When it is running (before it freezes), does it seem to run normal? When it freezes, I try to see if I can get some kind of response by moving the mouse or pressing keys on the keyboard. Doesn't seem to work. I can immediately restart it. It seems to run perfectly normal right up until it freezes. I was not using a surge protector when the power went off, although my computer seems to be the only plugged in electronic that was remotely affected by the power outtage. I did unplug the power strip that it was using before the power came back on, in case there was some sort of electrical surge when it came on.You should always use a surge protector (not a cheap one), preferably a UPS battery backup unit. Besides the battery back up features all of the name brands have excellent surge protection built in to them. From what I can find out about my power supply, it seems like I bought one of the worst quality power supplies out there. People all over the internet are reporting failures with this power supply. Maybe it was just coincidence that it HAPPENED to go when the power outage occurred. On the subject of UPSes, it is probably necessary that I get one with greater wattage than my power supply, CORRECT?Correct. UPSs last a long time and among other things that will make sure you have enough power for future upgrades or new machines with bigger power supplies. My UPS has outlived a couple of computers. Quote from: rthompson80819 on July 17, 2011, 12:53:49 PM Correct. UPSs last a long time and among other things that will make sure you have enough power for future upgrades or new machines with bigger power supplies. Oh, I thought the batteries on those things never LASTED very long... have you ever needed to replace your battery? If so, how many times? The UPS lasts, but the batteries don't. Try & get one with a 12V battery. I've substituted AGM car batteries for these. I've got 2 old Optima blue tops on this computer. Well, back on the issue at hand, it seems like a new problem has cropped up while I've been testing my computer. When the test OS (KNOPPIX) is booting up in it's usual text mode, the screen will suddenly seize, and random cells will take on different characters or colors, some will even start flashing. Then just now, it halted at my BIOS logo screen, with varios artifacts all over the place. I recently removed my dedicated graphics card in favor of the onboard graphics, in hopes that I could reduce any kind of strain on the power supply so I could atleast boot the system into a usable state. I've been using a multimeter on each charged pin on the ATX 24-pin connector on my motherboard, and all of the voltages seem to be showing up within their own safe ranges, even while the computer is in its "seized" state. Have I somehow made the situation worse, simply by running the computer? I didn't dare turn it back on after the heart attack at the BIOS logo, I had had enough for the night. Should I/can I continue testing? Or should I change the testing environment in some way? Would it be safe to test my components with a different, but functioning power supply? I sent an email to the company of this supposedly malfunctioning power supply, in the hopes that I can milk every last DROP out of my purchase in the form of a replacement. |

Solve : How to save a wordpad?? |
Answer» Hi - Formatting text in WordPadGeek-9pm Computer_Commando Thanks for your reply, however, I am not describing my problem clearly enough. I have written a page in WorkPad. What I need is for someone to tell me where to save it so that I can retrieve it in the future so that I can edit it. I hope this helps. BobSave it as a file...not a Folder... By default it will save to the My Documents folder... Give it a name you can remember. Or you can also save it to the Desktop for easy access...Patio - Thanks for your reply. I have read the help and support panel and have tried what has been suggested but no joy. The WordPad document has 2 different font sizes. I can print it and the 2 different font sizes print correctly. I can save the WordPad document and I can recall it and edit it. Any time I save the document I loose the font differences. From then on everything is the same size. I guess what I want is not possible. Thanks Bob Quote from: Computer_Commando on July 18, 2011, 06:26:26 PM Save file as filename.rtfYou have not replied to this. What format are you choosing when you save your Wordpad file? Are you absolutely sure you're using Wordpad, not Notepad?soybean - Thanks - Yes I have tried using rft. That gave me a file I could not make any sense of. I use text because I can read that, and yes I am using WordPad. I tried Notepad but could not get what I wanted. You must realize I am not very smart with computers. I just try things until I get what I want and I could not get anything to work on this problem. Bob Is there a reason you are using wordpad instead of some of the free word processors in programs like OPENOFFICE or google docs?rthompson - Yes there is a reason. I have learned to use wordpad and I don't know about anything else. It has done what I want to do until now when I wanted to use 2 different font sizes. I can live with only one font size, I just thought it would be nice to have the heading enlarged. Thanks for your though. BobDon't give up. Save it in RTF only. Do not use TXT format. Do not try to look at RTF with notepad. Use Word pad with RTF for all documents when you want persistent control of the font size. When you save a file in TXT, font information is lost.Yeah, save as rtf. Though i suggest you to use a more complex text editor, more like Microsoft Word. Quote from: Bobh on July 19, 2011, 05:26:14 PM until now when I wanted to use 2 different font sizes. I can live with only one font size, I just thought it would be nice to have the heading enlarged.Wordpad definitely will save a file in RTF format with more than one font size. It's a very simple matter. Create your file. Save it in RTF format, which I believe is the default format. Then, whatever you saved, font and all, will be displayed when you open that file. If this isn't working for you, then apparently you don't know how to do this simple task. I don't know what else we can advise that hasn't already been said. If you lose font sizes when saving a file, that indicates you are saving it Text format, not RTF. Yet, you say you are saving in RTF format. That simply makes no sense, so I don't see how we go any further with this. Looks like you'll have to spend the rest of your life with one font size. Edit: I've attached a Wordpad with three font sizes used in it. Save it to your hard DRIVE and then open it. Does it still have the three sizes? [RECOVERING disk space - old attachment deleted by admin]Instead of using wordpad, you can get the libreoffice suite or the Open Office Suite. Both are open source free alternatives to Microsoft Office if you don't already have it.Hi - To all of you that answered, my thanks to you. The people who answer questions in this forum have taught me what little I know and I appreciate help. I have not mixed RTF and text. I have tried both but separately. When I have tried RTF I have saved what I have written and it went to a file in "documents". When I go to "documents" and click on the file then I can open it. When I open it I do not get anything I can read. soybean - I hate to admit it BUT when you say " Save it to your hard drive and then open it" I do not know how to save it to my hard drive. I got your attachment to a file in my "documents" and when I OPENED it I could not read it or understand it. Apparently I am doing something wrong in the way I open it. Your sending an example was a good idea as we now know I don't open it right. Please try again. Bob |

Solve : computer keeps shuting of or sleeping? |
Answer» my computer which is running a windows 7 HOME premium 64 BIT was working fine until 2 weeks or until the windows update now it keeps sleeping or shuting down when i play games and the screen goes shuts off and the computer starts beeping and then i have to close it from the power button and reopen all the time i dont know whats wrong with it i searched the internet and i couldnt find anything and its not because of the power or the automatic SLEEP mode thing i did those things and it still does it can anyone help me out please? Is this a laptop ? ? what do you mean by specs? The computer desktop model/brand and any currently installed, removed or added RAM, Videocard, Soundcard details. The recurring number of beeps it makes would also be helpful. specs = "specifications" --> descriptive information about hardware or software products As you mentioned, your OS is Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit... How much memory do you have? What hard drive do you have? How big is the hard drive? How many free space do you have in your hard drive? What video card do you have? Does the specifications of your computer games are compatible with the specifications of your desktop?the problem is from the display drivers i dont know why but its for sure from there and the computer started to shut off by itself when i dont even play games hard drive theres 371 GB free of 448 GB. when the screen goes black it beeps twice then restarts the computerWhere are you getting these drivers from ? ? I hope you're not using one of those driver update apps... They are Carp.i got them from windows update it was (optional) and then i went to nvidia and i think redownloaded the GeForce GT 320You have not yet posted your Computer model/details as a number of things could come from that issue. It could be overheating and PC needs to be dusted or processor needs to reapply some thermal paste. It could be bad RAM as you need to test one for every booting. Power supply could also cause this. Driver issue is also another factor. |
