Solve : help again !?

Answer»

PLEASE HELP!
i'm hearing WEIRD sounds coming from my LAPTOP speakers. It's music I have never heard of, and it's really CREEPING me out. I did NOT turn on any music programs that would cause it to play.  what does it sound like?it's some kinda song D:It always plays the sound when you log onto your computer as you do normally?

Does it happen when you're in safe mode too? Just wondering, 'cuz safe mode temporarily DISABLES everything on your computer  (until you reboot your computer normally again) except for bare minimum for windows to run so that might tell you if a program is causing your PROBLEM.

Solve : Bugcode_usb_driver?

Answer»

Hi,
I have a Windows Vista 64 bit and it just shut down by itself and gave me a blue screen that says "A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.
Bugcode_Usb_Driver
What can I do? i'd be grateful for any advice.

Thanks1.  More information might be helpful:
     a.  The stop code with its four PARAMETERS; e.g. Technical Information:  STOP: 0X000000FE (0X00000008,0X00000006,0X00000001,0X87BD4930).
     b.  What service pack level are you using?
     c.  When does the error occur, during system startup?
     d.  If you disconnect all of the high-speed USB devices, does error still occur?
     e.  Does it occur if you boot to "Safe Mode"?  (Does Vista even have a safe mode?)

2.  I don't know anything regarding this error other than what "google" tells me.  Here's one of the links:  Blue Screen after Windows Vista SP2 installed on my TouchSmart IQ770Hey,
a. I tried to copy the stop code and got STOP:0X000000FE (0X0000008, 0X0000006, 0X0000001, 0XFFFF...(missing)
b. I'm using Service Pack 2
c. The error occurs randomly when I've been using the computer for a while
d. The only USB's I have are my external hard drive and a mouse and the error still occurs without those PLUGGED in.
e. don't know
The link you gave suggests using a hotfix, though I'm not sure if I should use it SINCE Microsoft says its not well tested.

Any other options?

Solve : Can't change desktop shortcut Icons.?

Answer»

Hi I just recently installed Windows 7on my computer.  I am trying to personalize the desktop and had downloaded a few icons for my shortcuts and changed them with no problem.  When I shut down the computer and rebooted the next day these icons were gone and just LEFT the generic ICON .  I cannot change them back. When I go into change icon off the properties tab It shows that its changed but on the desktop it is not.  Any ideas on the problem and how to fix this.

ThanksAre you clicking "Apply" ? ?Yes I am clicking apply. When you change the icons are you re-freshing the desktop? I doubt this is the issue but we have to START somewhere.the first night I shut down and started up in the morning the icons were gone and I could not even re change them.  The next day I tried again and they WOULD change.  I shut down again that night and they were gone again the next morning but again would change.  the third night I shut down and the next morning they were still there so it LOOKS like whatever the problem was it righted itself but I have no idea what it was.  I will post in a couple of days for an update.

Solve : No “properties” when right clicking image in a web page?

Answer»

Hello all,

Basic specs:
eMachines L1333G, Windows 7 Home Premium pre-installed, 64 bit, 2G RAM.
AVG 9.0.800.Malwarebytes, Spybot S&D, all CURRENT & run.

Problem:
No “properties” when right clicking image in a web PAGE.

In XP, in the sample below, a right click on a web page image would give the following info:

---------------------------
LINK PROPERTIES
Address: (gives link)
Will open in: Same window
Relation: nofollow
----------------------------
ELEMENT PROPERTIES
Location:  (gives link)
Type: JPEG image
Image dimension: 87px X 84px
Size of file: 3.89KB
Alternate text:  Blah blah
-----------------------------
Text language: English
-----------------------------

This FUNCTION seems to have been lost in Windows7.

Is there any way to get the same info in Windows7 with a right click?

Thanx for any input.

Cheers

Note: hovering over an image that is already on the hard drive will give pixels and total image size, as with XP.
What web browser?I’m running Firefox 3.0.15 on my old XP box and Firefox 3.6 on new W7 box.  Can you take a screenshot of what you are doing exactly? Thanks for your help.

Here's a screen grap (I hope) in W7  with Firefox 3.6.  It's the same on XP box with FF 3.6.3.

It looks like this is a Firefox problem.  After your first post I upgraded my XP box to fire fox 3.6.3 and have lost the right click “properties” function there also.

Thanks for jogging what’s left of my brain and hope this helps some other poor pilgrim.

Cheers

It's the exact same with me anyway.

You could try this ADDON for FF: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/14228

To some extent.  It gives pixels X pixels but not total size or the top link.  Being lazy, I like to have that information when cutting and pasting images just by right clicking.

kpak, The FF addon did it.  It never occurred to me that FF would remove features.

I don’t care what anybody sez, you guys are OK.  

The only thing missing out of those for me is the top link; it shows me Location, Type, Size, and Dimensions. It probably doesn't show the link since it's displaying the image info; the link will be shown in the statusbar when you hover over the image.

Solve : Accidentally Unchecked 'Always Ask Before Opening' in Outlook?

Answer»

This used to be an EASY fix in XP...

But after much Googling, I'm sure whatever I will do will screw things up.

I RECEIVED an email in my Outlook 2007 with an .html attachment. When I opened it, I accidentally unchecked the "Always Ask Before Opening..." option.

I'd like to restore it.

In XP, you could to to Folder Options=>File Types, but I'm using 7 now, and that's gone.

Under "Default Programs" in Control Panel, it doesn't seem to give me the option.

I found many articles such as this one that tells me how to fix it in the Registry if I'm using IE, but I'm not - I'm using Outlook, so I'm a titch nervous about screwing with RegEdit if'n I don't have to.

Open for advice. Quote from: rjbinney on July 05, 2011, 11:23:11 PM

Seems to me you NEED to spend some time getting this all sorted out in your head first and then try posting again.  Your first post here reflects a lack of a clear understanding by by your of your problem.  First, while it's possible to send an HTML file as an attachment, it's unusual to do so; more likely, someone would just put the URL to a website in an email message.  So, I suspect you've got the facts wrong there.

Also, the link you posted to a reference does not pertain to Outlook. It pertains solely to IE.  And, I have the impression this is really where your question lies; I suspect your question pertains to downloading with IE and how to make IE, not Outlook, ask you "Always ask before opening this type of file". My head is quite sorted, thank you.

I do indeed "have a clear understanding by by my of my problem". I described a specific concern, YET you "suspect" it isn't what I asked, but rather what I said specifically it is NOT? Interesting.

Again:

I received an email in Outlook with an .html attachment. I accidentally clicked "Always Ask Before Opening", and I don't want that.

My search for help - to attempt to solve the problem myself before posting here - only turned up articles about IE, NOT Outlook. I need a suggestion for Outlook. I believe the sentence in my post that read "I found many articles... that tell me how to fix it If I'm using IE, but I'm not - I'm using Outlook" indicated my understanding that the literature I was finding was not helpful to me.

So... How can I tell Outlook 2007, in a machine running Windows 7, how to re-confirm NEXT time I receive an .html attachment that I would like to be asked before opening? (Or any type of attachment, for that matter?)

(btw, it's NOT unusual for travel companies to send confirmations as .html documents.)Windows Vista and Windows 7

So that worked, Salmon. Begs the question - was that an Outlook-only solution, or does it affect ALL times I try to launch .html files. That's not that frequently, so no big whoop.

For each registered file type, there is a registry value called "Editflags" which contains 4 BYTES.  As far as I can see, the lowest bit of the third byte governs whether permission is asked to open an attachment of that file type. If the bit is a 1 then permission is not asked. if the bit is 0 then it is.  It certainly affects Outlook; it might affect any email client which is the default mail handler.

Solve : my hard drive is unable to defrag?

Answer»

first off information :
 Operating System: Windows 7 Ultimate 32-bit (6.1, Build 7601) Service Pack 1 (7601.win7sp1_gdr.110408-1631)
           Language: ENGLISH (Regional Setting: English)
System Manufacturer: System manufacturer
       System Model: System Product Name
               BIOS: BIOS Date: 11/03/08 16:15:26 Ver: 08.00.14
          Processor: AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 6000+ (2 CPUS), ~3.0GHz
             Memory: 4096MB RAM
Available OS Memory: 3072MB RAM
Page File: 1303MB used, 4837MB available
        Windows Dir: G:\Windows
    DirectX Version: DirectX 11

now to the problem, currently I'm using two hard drives, and wishing to defrag both of them. the first one (which is my spare) WORKED fine, however i cant find my main hard drive in the list. i attempted to use a system restore but it says, windows has found  file system corruption. it comes up with the option to do a system check. saying yes, next time i restart it does the system check but to no success. it cannot run due to an error created from a previous installation.

the hard drive itself is able to function with playing games, its just i wish to do a defrag. To run checkdisk, right-click on a command prompt icon and open as administrator. In the command prompt window type: chkdsk /r (then press ENTER). You'll be told the disk is in use and asked if you want to run checkdisk on the next boot. Say yes, exit the command prompt window, and reboot.

BTW, if the drive designation is not c: then the command should be chkdsk x: /r (where x is the correct drive letter)I attempted that, but it sill says there's an error, as created from a previous instalment, please use system recovery to go BACK to a previous version. And if I try that, it says, windows has found  file system corruption. Please try a system check. And it just keeps going in circleshttp://support.microsoft.com/kb/929833If you got file corruption problems in your Windows 7 then you can try to run the sfc command

Code: [Select]sfc /scannow
It will scan your system for file corruption. Then in order to defrag you got 2 options.

  • Go in safe mode and try the default defrag program from MS Windows (I hate that one)
  • Download   Auslogics Disk Defrag and use that one for defrags

Hope that helps you. Thanks for the help. After all that it STILL didnt work, but the program bigbangnet suggested found it first try, so I'm just going to use that. Thanks Allan for trying but to no success =)

There is absolutely no reason NOT to use multiple anti spyware programs. I'm not a FAN of spybot, but there certainly no reason not to use it along with SAS. And why would you say he can't use two anti malware programs and then tell him to use SAS and MalwareBytes? And what does any of this have to do with the clicking problem?

Solve : picasa will not work on windows 7 64 bit computer?

Answer»

I wonder if anyone here has any idea why picasa will not work on windows 7- 64 bit.  I copied all the picture folders and put them on the new windows 7 computer.  I then opened Picasa thinking it would LOAD all the pictures and nothing happened, it is just blank.  Every time I open Picasa on the new computer, it is as if I am installing it again.  Then it is just blank. I tried making a new folder on the new computer and copying and PASTING the pics in there thinking it may have something to do with the folders being copied from the old computer, but that didn't help.  I have done RESEARCH but can't come up with anything apparantley no one else has had this problem lol.. I don't know what else to check for.  Maybe an update??? Not sureWell, Picasa works fine on my 64 bit Windows 7 system. Try uninstalling and then downloading it again and reinstalling it.  Possibly you need to take ownership of the picture folders that you copied.

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc753659.aspx

Apparantly, I had the wrong path for Picasa to find the picture folders.  I had to put them all in the Picasa folder itself and now it is working fine.  Although, that shouldn't be since Picasa asks if you want it to scan the documents for pictures which is what I had checked.  I still have to FIGURE out why I had to put all the folders into the picasa folder.. Thanks for your help.

Solve : Win7 won't boot after motherboard change?

Answer»

Hi,

For those who followed me on my issues with my Soyo Dragon Ultra KT400+, the motherboard finally failed, putting to rest the mystery over the power supply, RAM, video card, etc. It just kept getting harder to start, and then once started would shut down after increasingly shorter periods of time until it became unusable because it wouldn't stay running for more than a few minutes.

So, hoping to keep my memory, CPU, etc, I replaced it with a Foxconn K75741GXMG-6L. The good news is the computer really likes the new motherboard. The bad news is Windows hates it.

Well, SPECIFICALLY, Windows 7 refuses to start. On initial boot up, it tries to start like normal. Then the screen flashes off and the computer reboots. On reboot, it offers Start Windows Normally or Startup Repair. If I choose to start normally, it stops on a Blue Screen. (Just numbers, no driver named - it won't stop on the screen long ENOUGH to read them anymore).

When I did Startup Repair, it worked really hard and did a lot of things, but in the end the error message said that Windows was unable to repair the computer and suggests that the problem may have been caused by a RECENT change in hardware configuration.

Continuing retries give the same results, except that Startup Repair comes back with the message that it can't fix it much faster now, and the BSOD doesn't stay on screen long enough to read anymore, though it's form factor looks the same.

I never experienced this when I have done motherboard changes in the PAST. Windows XP would just report "new device found" and would load the appropriate drivers.

Isn't there anyway to get Windows 7 to boot so I can change the drivers?

Repair install doesn't work either. It wants me to boot Windows and run the installation from there.Windows 7 has to be reinstalled. Windows installer will detect the hardware configuration and use the appropriate hal driver..

I would slave the drive on another computer to get your files off of it, put the drive back into your new computer/motherboard and reinstall..  A repair install might fix it, but you can't seem to get it to do that...

edit:

Quote

I never experienced this when I have done motherboard changes in the past. Windows XP would just report "new device found" and would load the appropriate drivers.

interesting         Those other boards might have been very similar to each other enabling one hal driver to work for all, so to speak..What you performed is a Startup Repair...which will only fix issues with the bootloader etc. but not your issues....

Repair Install of Win7

I suggest reading it thru 1st and printing a reference copy before starting.
Done properly all your data and apps will be intact....

Good Luck.Considering that the link states that Windows 7 can only be repair-installed from within the OS itself, I don't think this will be an option for jkolak...

In general, changing out the motherboard usually will result in a BSOD.  The main reason are because of the hard drive controller and motherboard chipset, but other factors certainly do come into play.

For those of you who have changed your motherboards out without problems, it's usually because the motherboard's hard disk controller and/or the chipset are the same.

Repair-installing was certainly an option with Windows XP if you get a BSOD, as long as:

1) The CD you're repair-installing from has the same edition as your BSOD'd OS (i.e.: if your BSOD'd OS is XP Professional, use an XP Professional disc to repair).
2) The CD you're repair-installing from is at the same Service Pack level or higher.
2) The CD you're repair-installing from has the exact same version of Internet Explorer as your BSOD'd OS (which usually means a slipstream is necessary with a third-party utility like nLite--no official XP disc has IE7 or IE8 integrated).

For Windows 7, your best bet is to try and change your hard disk controller driver in Device Manager to a generic one before trying to swap the motherboard.  Even then, you may run into problems...

Overall, it's not worth repair-installing anymore, as NT6 puts you in a Catch 22 with it anyway (can't get to the OS to run the repair-install!).  If Startup Repair doesn't work, and you don't have access to the original motherboard, then your best bet is to back up the data and format. Thanks everyone!

What a learning experience this has been!

So the death of a motherboard is really a system fatality since Windows cannot launch after repair.

I'm really, really surprised that with all the sophisticated recovery tools included in Windows, that they have not developed a provision to recover from this situation.

Seems easy enough, just like a fresh install is able to deal with a wide variety of hardware.

I think really, they should allow a repair install from the DVD bootup.

As it TURNS out, it wasn't as bad as it could have been. I had already redirected My Documents to the second partition, so I only had to copy C:\users to D: (using the Ubuntu live CD).

I had forgotten about Windows 7 and drivers. Foxconn must not be very common as the ethernet adaptor and audio were not working when finished.

Luckily the old Foxconn drivers worked okay under Windows 7, so the system is up and running now.

Now to get on to reinstalling software....

I have exact same problem and motherboard was replaced by exact same model. So I believe the problem lead to Windows 7 copy protection feature. Certain checksum fails so it can't boot. I do not understand why Microsoft doesn't provide simple repair procedure for this case. Unfortunately my original Windows 7 DVD got lost and now I am trapped in the situation. I admit this question had me puzzled for a moment (Windows compression? RAR?) until I remembered that WinRAR* can be associated with plenty of other archive types than just its own RAR (Roshal ARrchive) format. It can open and extract from at least 14 types of archive and in addition it can create archives in both RAR and Zip formats.

At the end of installing WinRAR the user is presented with the file association option dialog with these extensions ALREADY checked: RAR, Zip, CAB, ARJ, LZH, ACE, 7-Zip, TAR, GZip, UUE, BZ2, Z. If they just click OK then WinRAR will be associated with those archive types, and files with those extensions will be shown in Windows Explorer as files of type e.g. if Zip was left checked then Zip files will show as "WinRAR Zip Archive" in Windows Explorer and will have the WinRAR icon.

Windows XP, Vista and W7 compression USES the Zip archive format. To remove the zip association from WinRAR it is merely necessary to uncheck the appropriate box in the WinRAR settings dialog under the "Integration" tab (and then click OK) as seen in the image I posted above.

Solve : Media Centre.?

Answer»

Hi.

Running Vista home premium.  Media centre has recently started coming up every time I put a dvd in the drive.  I've disabled it in the default programs menu, but it still keeps coming up, EVER since I re-installed ROXIO easy media creator 10.  I want it to stop coming up, and simply display the autoplay menu as it ALWAYS has done.  Any help would be greatly appreciated here - its driving me NUTS!

Cheers, guys.

Solve : Remote Desktop Connection to Windows Vista Home Premium?

Answer»
1) Is it true that it's not possible to remote desktop connect to a computer running Windows Vista Home Premium?

2) Is it true that it's not possible to remote desktop connect to a computer running Windows Vista Home Premium, no matter what hacks you use (including the .dll replacement to allow the 'regular remote desktop' on it)?

Thanks.
What in the name of wild world of sports are you trying to do ? ?
Lmao.

Doesn't it seem obvious?
I'm trying to connect to a Vista Home Premium computer on the network via remote desktop... =P.
I just READ on the internet some people used hacked .dll's to fix the RD problem. I don't know if this FIXES the actual 'cannot-remote-desktop-to-vista-home-versions' problem, if there is one.

I think it's funny I put an explicit title and I ask explicit, closed QUESTIONS yet instead of firmly ANSWERING them you start asking more questions.. really, do you need to ask those questions, to answer mine?

So.. do you know the answers? It's DISABLED in Home...this is by design.

If you leave the display connected to the integrated video card it will do what you described.

Solve : If I install Windows 7, can I bring back Vista using System Recovery??

Answer»

If I install Windows 7 on my computer which only has 1 hard drive, is it possible to after use System Recovery (press F11 when the computer is starting up) to go back a few days. Will this put my computer back on Windows Vista or no?

P.S. - How can I set-up a dual-boot between Vista and 7?No. When you install Windows 7. all of the parts that made Vista RUN will be removed and replaced by 7. Doing a system restore will not bring you back to Vista.

Here is a good guide to help you set up a dual boot.

http://www.techspot.com/guides/143-dual-boot-windows7/You can, however, CREATE an image of your drive with a utility such as Acronis True Image (or other free options like Paragon). EVERYONE should use disk imaging software. It will take a "snapshot" of your drive and allow you to restore that image any time in the future.what is the MODEL of your pc? i think you have an hp by MENTIONING the F11 thing i maybe wrong.
when you go to "my computer" do you see the recovery drive listed? if yes you can do a system recovery.
i have an hp laptop dual boot vista and 7 and the hp recovery drive is still listed in my computer because i did not format the HDD but if you formated your HDD im sure its gone. You are responding to a post that is 6 months old.

Solve : Size of printing??

Answer»

Hi -
I am writing on Work pad.  I set the font size at 14 for my heading and 12 for the rest of the writing.  However when I print it out the size is 10.  How can I get it to print what I am using to do the writing?  I am using Vista Home Basic   32 bit.
I'm sure the answer is simple but I'm not too good on this computer.   Thanks for help.    BobWhat did you do?
In Word Pad the font only applies to the current selection. You can select the whole document with ctrl-A and change the font. Then go back and sleet just something else. Geek-9pm -
Thanks for the reply.  You helped but I would LIKE to have 2 font sizes.  I would like the HEADINGS to be in 14 size and the body of the writing to be in 12.   Any other suggestions?    BobHighlight the text you WANT to be 14 pt and select 14 pt in the font size drop down. Do likewise for the text you want to be 10 pt and finally CHOOSE Print Preview and confirm it is right.

Hi -
Thanks for both your replies.  I think I can do what I want to now.   Bob

Solve : Dell Studio 1555 laptop battery problem?

Answer»

I have had my laptop for about a year and seven months now and my computer is not recognizing a BATTERY charge. But it will run. When it is charging (with the charger plugged in) it has the charger symbol but with an "X" over the battery with it SAYING there is no charge in it. And when I take the charger out it says the battery is full but it has the flashing "X" like the battery needs to be plugged into the charger because  the battery is running low.

Any suggestions would help and thank you for all that answer Yes, your battery is probably in it's death throes.  Batteries start degrading the day they are made.Knew I was going to need one SOON but still didnt think I would need one for a while. What I first got the computer it had a battery life of about 4hrs under "casual" use. But when I was playing high demand games. 60% processor use or more. The battery would just die within an hour. But when this STARTED happening I stillhad about 2hrs of battery life left in a full charge. If you get 3 years from a laptop battery your in the bonus round...Two friends and I also use roughly the same model of laptop (they all use the same charger, so I assume it's the same one you are using).

Try looking into the following:

1. Try finding another laptop that uses the same charger and/or battery. Try their battery in your computer. If it works then the problem is probably your battery.

1. Look into the end of your charger. Is there a tiny pin in the middle of it? My friends and I haven't quite figured out exactly why, but if the pin is broken, bent, or even completely missing, the laptop doesn't charge the battery properly (probably some safeguard implemented by Dell to prevent people from BUYING other chargers)

2. Does your charger charge the other battery properly?

3. If said laptop also uses the same battery, try putting your battery into the other laptop. Does it charger properly? This might be related to the pin thing, but this time maybe an issue with the motherboard side not accepting the pin.Be sure to check this site before you get a new one... If you "qualify" they'll send you a new one for free: http://www.dellbatteryprogram.com/

Solve : PC multicolour screen crash, Windows 7 or Video Card??

Hey guys,

Ive had a problem with my computer for past few months, tried a fair few things to fix it but so far no solutions. It started with watching videos on my pc, online or offline, but has spread to when i play games or just search the net such as facebook or google. The screen crashes to DIFFERENT coloured vertical lines and freezes up. The colours can vary but there is no way to get out of it. My computer was recently upgraded to Radeon 6950 1gb graphics card and windows 7. I have an OLD ddr2 ram motherboard with 4gb ram as well as amd quad CORE. Any possible solutions would be greatly appreciated!!!!This sounds to me like your over HEATING. Can you PROVIDE full system specs please and also has the computer been cleaned out recently? As in fluff, dust and other stuff.

this happens every startup, startup repair does nothing, system restore wont work,  it gives and error and so does everything else except hard drive tests and mem tests, i coppied all the hard drive files on to another hard drive no problem im 99 percent positive its not a failing hard drive

i booted into hirens 14 and ran combofix as a last rezort, and it detected a rootkit then asks to restart. i have tried a registy restore from a backup i made about 3 days after having the computer, nothing changed, i rest the mbr from command line, nothing. ran multiple antivirus scans in hirens, nothing, mini xp wont run any rootkit detection clients correctly.

and  bluescreen VIEW was my first choice, except there is no BSOD log files, i did however find some sort of driver log in WINDOWS and i think its from the startup and no drivers involved with the chipset are "stopped" or not ready, shophos anti rootkit detected kernel modification as well, and that coupled with the combofix detecting a rootkit. i think its best to just have a new system, im tired of fooling with it and am taking advantage of my 60 day WARRANTY.If your buying from the same Vendor i'd get a longer warranty than 60 dats...most are 1 or 2 years on new PC's.got a 2 YEAR damage, if they wont accept the 60 day, ill just smash it then mail it backWOW plugged an old usb drive into my desktop and it detected Alureon bootkit, in the master boot record backup i had made on the usb drive  when trying to fix the laptop, well thats the cause then, i have no idea where it came from

Good evening guys, my cousin badly need HELP. Upon changing password last NIGHT, she lost it and can't remember. She cannot login to Windows right now.

We are trying to use System Restore... So we boot into the Advanced Boot Options screen and then choose Repair your computer, then after asking what country and language, it asks for the password.

Solve : How hot is too hot for a laptop?

Answer»

I just wanted to ask the question cause I have noticed my laptop getting really hot depending on what I am doing on it. When I am using it low demand uses (i.e. internet, file browsing etc.) the laptop does get pretty warm (a little but warmer than you would feel under a blanket) but when I am using it for high demand uses (i.e. GAMES and saving movies from Windows Live Movie Maker) if I an not careful about it the laptop can get so hot that it feels like it is starting to burn you. Would this kind of HEAT (mainly high demand uses) damage the computer in anyway as in destroying the graphics card and processor and could this be the reason why I can SEE a visible change in what graphic settings I used to run compared to run now and FPS rates for video games

Computer Specs

Dell Studio 1555 running Windows 7 Home Premium Service Pack 1
Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU     P8700 2.53GHz  2.53GHz
Installed Memory (RAM): 6.00GB
System type: 64-bit Operating System

Download and run Speedfan

Post the results.

Also, has it ever been cleaned??   Do you use it on a flat surface, making sure that you do not block the fan vents ??With regard to the actual Quote

How hot is  too hot for a laptop
question, the maximum internal temp usually ranges anywhere from 140°F  to 160°F, but I suppose that changes with each computer... Either way though, sounds to me like the port through which the fan dumps out the hot air might be clogged (or kind of like what reddevilggg said, it's just as probable that the cooler air from the outside is never getting all the way to the inside if the vent/intake is being blocked by... [anything]).

Do you have dogs/cats? Lots of times their hair can get sucked in through the intake and end up clogging up the exhaust vent(s)...

Just a thought. Good luck!  Has been cleaned by some compressed air but never opened up. Been a year and seven months since I got itHere are the readings from what SpeedFan said

Low Demand Usage (Cpu usage between 5 and 25 average for test 10)
HD0: 38 C
Temp1: 50 C
Temp2:  47 C
Temp3: 53 C
Core 0: 42 C
Core 1: 41 C

High Demand Usage (Cpu Usage above 25 average for test 93.7)
HD0: 43 C
Temp1: 77 C
Temp2: 61 C
Temp3: 67 C
Core0: 70 C
Core1: 76 C

The fan speeds and voltages would not SHOW up for some reason. And I did have the Automatic fan speed box checked off while  doing so.

NOTE: That every one of the Temp and Core either showed a flame or a red arrow pointing up through the whole test except for after I had completed the high demand test with the exception of Temp3 which remained the flame and about 10min after Temp1 is flashing between the green check mark and the red arrow pointing up.

NOTE: The HD0 had a green check mark the whole TIME during the test until the very end of the High demand test. Then after the high demand test it stayed the red arrow pointing up the rest of the time i was on my computer

It is on a flat, solid surface with the air vent at least 1ft away from all objects around it (other than the table)

And the start tempature  is about 71 F cause that is what the air temp is in my house.

Also with the install of the program will this mess with my fan if I choose to unistall it at a later date

The min / max temp ranges for your processor are between 0-105 C

Personally, i think Laptops generally get to hot when they're used as desktops. Laptop are meant to be a portable workstation. Maybe try a cooling pad.I really do use this for a work computer mostly for school and surfing the internet. But sometimes in school I have to make a video and I use Windows Live Movie Maker. And when saving a movie on that you CPU usage could get up to 100% But I very rarely play high demand games on my laptop

Solve : asp or .net error message??

Answer»

c:\windows\microsoft.net\framework\v4.030319 mscordacwks.dll is either not designed to run on windows or contains an error.

This is the message a vice PRINCIPAL got when she turned on her computer this morning. I have not seen it before and Google was not exactly forthcoming with answers.

Is there a fix for this? I could call in the DOE tech but if it can be done easily that would save her a couple of days waiting time.

hp desktop running Windows 7, 2gb ram, updated (that I know of) as of June 28.

ThanksI assume you get the message INSIDE Windows not before, yes? You can uninstall .net and reinstall it as a first troubleshooting step (http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=17851).

You can also check your startup apps and see if something is calling .net. Here's a simple app to check and manage startup programs: http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtmlThanks for the quick reply. I have used StartupCPL before and it is great. I looked at the .net page you sent and that looks good too. Luckily the vp in question is pretty fearless when it comes to the computer and should be able to run that on her own. Uninstall and Reinstall the .NET framework 4.0. Uninstall and Reinstall the .NET framework 4.0.
I think I covered that ALREADY Been kind of hectic, sorry for not getting back sooner.

Well, the whole thing is moot. Because of the software installed and the confidential nature of the work done on the machine, the DOE has used MUCH stricter security on it that on other administrative machines. It is so strict that I can not even update Adobe Reader because I don't have an administrative account on the main server. Even when logged onto the local machine it asks for an administrative account and password on the main server.

Can't uninstall or install anything.

So, I called it in to the DOE help desk and the technician will let me know how it GOES.

Thanks again.Just give the Tech the advice you have recieved here...
Best of Luck...

Solve : USB controller?

Answer»

USB controller stoped working on my labtop....Ican't plug and USB devices..need help?
Please provide more info. to your laptop model, OS, history and errors regarding your USB problems. It really doesnt matter on the laptop year or anything. Maybe something went wrong with the eletrical inside. It could be that you or someone using the laptop might have accidently  dropped it and it now has a bad sauter CONNECTION.  Which could lead to it to stop working. You could have also damages the metal pins where you plug the device in which would not give it connection at all. But it could also be the laptop going because most laptops (as well as desktops) have a more than 1 USB PORT. If both of them dont work it could be that your laptop is going also. Or it could be that the power going to them it cut off because of bad sauter connection like I said before. So open up your laptop and make sure none of the sauter fell offf18carNASCAR, that is the longest "I don't know what's wrong with your laptop" post I have ever seen.

Person: My car won't start!
18carNASCAR: Maybe something's wrong with the engine! Maybe something fell offf!

PS This is how you SPELL 'solder'.

OK, I don't know either. The MS documentation says to turn off you computer, unplug l USB devices, turn it back on and wait a bit. Then plug in the USB thing in question. In a bit Windows will find it. If not, try another USB port. Wait a bit.

Mother says you just have to wait!Hi

Can you remember what the last usb device was you plugged in. Most Usb ports have self resetting fuses if to much current is drawn. But you need to remove the battery and power wait for say 3 minutes and then plug everything back in and then TEST the ports again with a going device like a mouse. If you plug a USB mouse in and the light comes on UNDERNEATH but it isn't detected then there is either a driver problem or the USB controller is faulty.

Solve : desktop.ini ???????

Answer»

Hello All
I have a problem. I don't know when it STARTED, but I have noticed that
in almost all of the folders that I open There is a "desktop.ini (Configuration
settings)". I delete it but after I restart the computer it reappears again.
I have no idea what this is or why its in all these FILES.
Any HELP will be apriciated.

Ralphhttp://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc144102(v=vs.85).aspx
What desktop.ini is for.
Please do not delete desktop.ini-it is a configuration file for your folders and files, and is meant to be hidden.Feel free to delete the desktop.ini files if you like - there's no potential HARM. On the other hand, there's no harm in leaving them alone either. Thanks for the replys.

Solve : After power outage, desktop computer will lock up after ~5-10 minutes of usage?

Answer»

Greetings everyone,

My community experienced a power outage the other day while I was using my desktop computer. When the power came back on, that computer will dependably freeze within about 5 to 10 minutes of usage. Usage can range from playing games to simply letting it idle at the desktop.

This computer is running Windows Vista Ultimate x64 SP2. I have an MSI P6NGM-FD motherboard, which holds an Intel Core 2 Duo prcoessor, and two one-GB sticks of memory. Two hard drives are ATTACHED, the first a SATA 250GB hard drive with the system, and the second a SATA data hard drive with 1TB of storage space.

The computer is able to boot into safe mode without any issues, as I was able to complete an sfc /scannow command, which found and replaced one file. No luck after that, though.

Running a check disk found issues, and (I'm assuming at this, no log was made) they're fixed.

Does anyone know what I can do to further diagnose the issue? I'd like to save reinstalling the OS/shelling out money for hardware for last. When it freezes, what do you do?  Can you immediately restart or do you have to shutdown and wait for some time before starting again?  When it is running (before it freezes), does it seem to run normal?

Were you using a surge protector on the computer when the power outage occurred?  Quote from: soybean on July 16, 2011, 07:09:23 PM

When it freezes, I try to see if I can get some kind of response by moving the mouse or pressing keys on the keyboard. Doesn't seem to work. I can immediately restart it. It seems to run perfectly normal right up until it freezes.

I was not using a surge protector when the power went off, although my computer seems to be the only plugged in electronic that was remotely affected by the power outtage. I did unplug the power strip that it was using before the power came back on, in case there was some sort of electrical surge when it came on.You should always use a surge protector (not a cheap one), preferably a UPS battery backup unit.  Besides the battery back up features all of the name brands have excellent surge protection built in to them. From what I can find out about my power supply, it seems like I bought one of the worst quality power supplies out there. People all over the internet are reporting failures with this power supply. Maybe it was just coincidence that it HAPPENED to go when the power outage occurred.

On the subject of UPSes, it is probably necessary that I get one with greater wattage than my power supply, CORRECT?Correct.  UPSs last a long time and among other things that will make sure you have enough power for future upgrades or new machines with bigger power supplies.

My UPS has outlived a couple of computers. Quote from: rthompson80819 on July 17, 2011, 12:53:49 PM
Correct.  UPSs last a long time and among other things that will make sure you have enough power for future upgrades or new machines with bigger power supplies.

My UPS has outlived a couple of computers.

Oh, I thought the batteries on those things never LASTED very long... have you ever needed to replace your battery? If so, how many times? The UPS lasts, but the batteries don't.  Try & get one with a 12V battery.

I've substituted AGM car batteries for these.  I've got 2 old Optima blue tops on this computer.
Well, back on the issue at hand, it seems like a new problem has cropped up while I've been testing my computer. When the test OS (KNOPPIX) is booting up in it's usual text mode, the screen will suddenly seize, and random cells will take on different characters or colors, some will even start flashing. Then just now, it halted at my BIOS logo screen, with varios artifacts all over the place. I recently removed my dedicated graphics card in favor of the onboard graphics, in hopes that I could reduce any kind of strain on the power supply so I could atleast boot the system into a usable state.

I've been using a multimeter on each charged pin on the ATX 24-pin connector on my motherboard, and all of the voltages seem to be showing up within their own safe ranges, even while the computer is in its "seized" state.

Have I somehow made the situation worse, simply by running the computer? I didn't dare turn it back on after the heart attack at the BIOS logo, I had had enough for the night. Should I/can I continue testing? Or should I change the testing environment in some way? Would it be safe to test my components with a different, but functioning power supply?

I sent an email to the company of this supposedly malfunctioning power supply, in the hopes that I can milk every last DROP out of my purchase in the form of a replacement.

Solve : How to save a wordpad??

Answer»

Hi -
I have Vista Home Basic  32 BIT.  I am using WordPad to create a document.  The heading font is 18 and the body font is 12.
When I type the document and print it both sizes stay as typed.  I then want to save the document so that in the future I can edit
it and reprint it.  I save it as a folder in documents.  When I print this the font is the same for the whole document and the margins
are all wrong.  Is there some way that I can save the document and recall it in the same way that I typed it?
Thanks for help.      BobSave file as filename.rtf

Formatting text in WordPad
WordPad is a basic program that you can use to create and edit documents. Unlike Notepad, WordPad enables you to include text with formatting—such as italic, bold, and underline—as well as graphics.

Thanks for your reply, however, I am not describing my problem clearly enough.  I have written a page in WorkPad.  What I need is for someone to tell me where to save it so that I can retrieve it  in the future so that I can edit it.  I hope this helps.    BobSave it as a file...not a Folder...
By default it will save to the My Documents folder...
Give it a name you can remember.

Or you can also save it to the Desktop for easy access...Patio -
Thanks for your reply.  I have read the help and support panel and have tried what has been suggested but no joy.
The WordPad document has 2 different font sizes.  I can print it and the 2 different font sizes print correctly.
I can save the WordPad document and I can recall it and edit it.    Any time I save the document I loose the font differences.
From then on everything is the same size.  I guess what I want is not possible.  Thanks    Bob

You have not replied to this. What format are you choosing when you save your Wordpad file?

Are you absolutely sure you're using Wordpad, not Notepad?soybean -
Thanks  - Yes I have tried using rft.  That gave me a file I could not make any sense of.  I use text because I can read that,  and yes I
am using WordPad.  I tried Notepad but could not get what I wanted.  You must realize I am not very smart with computers.  I just
try things until I get what I want and I could not get anything to work on this problem.      Bob
Is there a reason you are using wordpad instead of some of the free word processors in programs like OPENOFFICE or google docs?rthompson -
Yes there is a reason.  I have learned to use wordpad and I don't know about anything else.  It has done what I want to do
until now when I wanted to use 2 different font sizes.  I can live with only one font size, I just thought it would be nice to have the heading enlarged.   Thanks for your though.       BobDon't give up. Save it in RTF only. Do not use TXT format. Do not try to look at RTF with notepad. Use Word pad with RTF for all documents when you want persistent control of the font size. When you save a file in TXT, font information is lost.Yeah, save as rtf. Though i suggest you to use a more complex text editor, more like Microsoft Word. Wordpad definitely will save a file in RTF format with more than one font size.  It's a very simple matter.  Create your file.  Save it in RTF format, which I believe is the default format.  Then, whatever you saved, font and all, will be displayed when you open that file.  If this isn't working for you, then apparently you don't know how to do this simple task.

I don't know what else we can advise that hasn't already been said.  If you lose font sizes when saving a file, that indicates you are saving it Text format, not RTF.  Yet, you say you are saving in RTF format.  That simply makes no sense, so I don't see how we go any further with this.  Looks like you'll have to spend the rest of your life with one font size.

Edit: I've attached a Wordpad with three font sizes used in it.  Save it to your hard DRIVE and then open it.  Does it still have the three sizes?

[RECOVERING disk space - old attachment deleted by admin]Instead of using wordpad, you can get the libreoffice suite  or the Open Office Suite.

Both are open source free alternatives to Microsoft Office if you don't already have it.
Hi -
To all of you that answered, my thanks to you.  The people who answer questions in this forum have taught me what little I know and I appreciate help.
I have not mixed  RTF and text.  I have tried both but separately.  When I have tried RTF I have saved what I have written and it went to a file in "documents".  When I go to "documents" and click on the file then I can open it.  When I open it I do not get anything I can read.
soybean -
I hate to admit it BUT when you say "  Save it to your hard drive and then open it" I do not know how to save it to my hard drive.
I got your attachment to a file in my "documents"  and when I OPENED it I could not read it or  understand it.  Apparently I am doing something wrong in the way I open it.  Your sending an example was a good idea as we now know I don't open it right.  Please try again.     Bob

Solve : computer keeps shuting of or sleeping?

Answer»

my computer which is running a windows 7 HOME premium 64 BIT was working fine until 2 weeks or until the windows update now it keeps sleeping or shuting down when i play games and the screen goes shuts off and the computer starts beeping and then i have to close it from the power button and reopen all the time i dont know whats wrong with it i searched the internet and i couldnt find anything and its not because of the power or the automatic SLEEP mode thing i did those things and it still does it can anyone help me out please? Is this a laptop ? ?

What else has happened other than Win Updates ? ?
no it is a desktop i dont know i tried restoring it didnt work still the same i tryed the power management thing and the automatic sleep mode i updated nvidia and directx and i dont know what else to doThere's alot more to this story than i can determine right now...
Provide more exact details on what you have done up to this point...for example "restore"... what type of restore was it ? ?Do you see any restart message from Windows Update during this shutdown message you are mentioning in your post?
Try looking at this link -> http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/prevent-windows-update-from-forcibly-rebooting-your-computer/ If the given topic is not the same with your current situation, DO NOT FOLLOW and disregard the solution. There may be other things needed attention but FIRST give more answer to what and when this happens. Is the issue recurring every time you play games?

What specific game is that?

Can you post here also the specs of your computer?Patio: "restore" i restored it to one day before so it changes back everyhting i did that day to the day befoe
jason: its not that
geek hoodlum: yes the issue is recurring everytime i play games it doesnt do it any other time. the games are battlefield play 4 free and combat arms. and what do you mean by specs?
Quote

what do you mean by specs?
The computer desktop model/brand and any currently installed, removed or added RAM, Videocard, Soundcard details. The recurring number of  beeps it makes would also be helpful. specs = "specifications" --> descriptive information about hardware or software products

As you mentioned, your OS is Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit...
How much memory do you have?
What hard drive do you have? How big is the hard drive? How many free space do you have in your hard drive?
What video card do you have?

Does the specifications of your computer games are compatible with the specifications of your desktop?the problem is from the display drivers i dont know why but its for sure from there and the computer started to shut off by itself when i dont even play games
hard drive theres 371 GB free of 448 GB. when the screen goes black it beeps twice then restarts the computerWhere are you getting these drivers from ? ?
I hope you're not using one of those driver update apps...
They are Carp.i got them from windows update it was (optional) and then i went to nvidia and i think redownloaded the GeForce GT 320You have not yet posted your Computer model/details as a number of things could come from that issue. It could be overheating and PC needs to be dusted or processor needs to reapply some thermal paste. It could be bad RAM as you need to test one for every booting. Power supply could also cause this. Driver issue is also another factor.

Solve : copy and wont paste?

Answer»

I copy 20 names highlight them and insert them in my bbc EMAIL and only the first name shows...windows 7 is my operating system
Cheers
DukeNo idea what you're talking about, sorry.Copy only saves 1 item...you MAY have to do it MANUALLY...
Or find a better email app.It really depens how you copy the information and from where you copy it. If it's from multiple fields in your screen or program then it MIGHT be normal that it didn't copy all the data. Giving more information with what your trying to copy EXACT it should help us more with finding a solution. For example, what program where you using ? From what you said it looks like an email program. If so, what are you trying to copy and from where exactly are you trying to copy it from ?

Get that info and type it here so we can give you more insight.I am copying form wordpad and putting in yahoo mail on bbc...I have been doing this for nine years..I send 277 emails out almost daily and send about 70 at a time...I put another mouse on and it does the same thing...
Cheers
DukeI thought bbc is another email provider. Hehe. It is just Blind Carbon Copy

Okay try this, open your Wordpad > then copy all email addresses there by holding CTRL key then tap A key> once highlighted > go to the bbc section of your compose email then hold CTRL key then tap V key

If it doesn't work, try to copy and paste first all the email address from your Wordpad to Notepad, if all are copied in your Notepad, then copy and paste it now to the bbc section of your email Quote from: geek hoodlum on July 20, 2011, 08:34:47 PM

A pedant writes:

The BBC is the British Broadcasting Corporation, a broadcaster; they make Limey TV programs. It is also Brown Boveri Company who make electrical machinery. Bcc is blind carbon copy. To All: My mistake, I overlooked the thread. Its BBC and not BCC. Please disregard my post regarding Blind Carbon Copy (BCC). It will not help. Sorry.

Solve : Error Code in Windows 7 Home Premium?

Answer»

Just purchased my first laptop and am attempting to connect to the internet via a DSL GNET Modem using PPPoE. When I attempt to connect to the internet I get Error Code 651: The modem (or other connecting device) has reported an error. Any ideas on a FIX for this. Odd to get a new system and an error code so soon.

System OVERVIEW:

Toshiba Satellite Notebook
AMD Phenom (tm) II N870 TRIPLE Core Processor
2.30 GHZ
64 Bit OS

Sent via IPADMy very 1st suggestion re your issue would be to contact your ISP and acquaint them with the problem. While there are some things on your end that can cause the problem it is more likely that the problem will be at the ISP end. Even if it is not at their end they should be in a position to WALK you through the process to ESTABLISH where the problem is. If it turns out to be solved via their involvement please post back to tell us what was the cause specifically. truenorth

Solve : Context Menus?

Answer»

Ok im looking for a registry key that will allow me to right click a file and choose the "save as" option.

Windows 7 system
I personally have many entries for win 7 and the save as command but none of them affect the right click context menu...can someone help me out PLEASE?You can always open the file with the program that uses such files, then choose 'save as'. Not sure if there is anything that WOULD do that by simply right clicking on said file. Adding items to the context menu is not easy. See if anything here will help: http://www.tech-recipes.com/rx/1176/how-to-add-menu-items-under-right-click-or-context-menu/I foresee problems. A "Save as..." function is an application-level thing. Save something the application can read as something the application can write. Why should ANYONE EXPECT the OS by itself to know how to save (for example) a jpg file as an MP3? I wrote that on purpose. If you see why it is ridiculous you will also see why the question is a misconceived one.
