Solve : Hello and help !!?

Answer»

Bad way to start my first post. But im serious need of some help and advise on how to resolve this issue. I have had a Raid 5 array running for about a year and have had no problems with it at all untill recently. My old MB went and died on me and i had to replace it with a new one. I had an ASUS P5E3 Deluxe Wi/Fi n running raid 5 with 3 500gb SATA drives on Windows 7 64 bit. Was running great untill i changed to my new Mobo. Bought an ASUS P6T6 WS Revolution and tried to put my raid 5 array back but ended up with a rather serious issue.

Once i installed windows 7 only 2 of my HDD's were visable and those were listed as a RAW file format. I looked in the disk manager and it said the same thing but did show the 3rd drive. They are all listed as RAW format and Windows of course wants me to format the drives so i can use them again. This is something i am trying my best to avoid SINCE i have a LOT of info on them i do not want to lose.

The raid array at post says that everything is normal and nothing is wrong. But once im in Windows its always the same, RAW file format and not available. It wont let me rebuild, wont let me delete cause that would delete all info on the drives, and that would be bad.

Does anyone have any ideas on what to do on this? I really dont want to lose all my data.

Why did you replace the motherboard?  What was the APPARENT problem you were having that convinced you the motherboard was bad?Went to boot up one day and nothing happened. Not sure exactly what went wrong but I couldnt GET power to the system at all. Checked the power supply and it was fine. Even tested the power button switch and it was fine as well. Tried jumping the power pins on the mobo and nothing..... I sent it into ASUS and they said something in the boards power system had failed and could have been from a power surge. I DOUBT it as I have a UPS system and protection, but hey i guess anything is possible.

could the MB be repaired?

Solve : Turn off Advanced boot options menu when startup??

Answer»

Ever since I did a system restore on my computer 3 weeks ago my computer now always asks me to select what boot mode I want. Its really annoying to do that every time I turn on the computer. I GOOGLED for a solution, but all I GOT was how to use the menu, nothing about how to make this menu not appear and have vista START up as it did before, automatically without user INPUT required (until the login screen).

can anyone help me?

Solve : Windows 7 flashplayer problem?

Answer»

I have a HP Pavilion dv4. I bought my laptop back in August and it was working like any COMPUTER, a few snags here and there but no major problems. I got the FREE upgrade to windows 7 when I bought it.

I installed windows 7 a couple weeks back and it SEEMED like it was working fine. Then maybe a day or two later everything that involved the use of a flashplayer made my internet crash. I can still move the arrow around and all but I have to open my task MANAGER and close the internet that way.

The weird thing is that if I restart my computer everything will work just fine. I can go on youtube and other sites no problem. But after about 20 minutes or so it decides to stop working and the little load curser on the video just stops spinning and I get the "not responding" deal.

I've reinstalled adobe flash player and shockwave with the LATEST versions, I've tried using different web browsers but nothing seems to work.

Not completely sure but I do think it has to do with my flash player.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Which version of Flash?
Are you using Fire Fox browser? If so, get the latest Fire Fox and install the latest Flash. Also, Fire Fox lets you disable some plug-ins. So you can see if it is the Flash or something else.
Both Fire Fax and Adobe have made changes in the past few weeks.I have firefox 3.5 and adobe flash player 10. All of the add ons look like they are enabled. I installed both firefox and adobe flash on 12-17. I don't know what to do!

Solve : Question about Windows 7?

Answer»

I read from the news that Windows 7 is a good os and will become just like XP ( I mean by usage )
So I wanted to know if my computer is weak for Windows 7

Specs:

Pentium 4
CPU 3,00Ghz
1,5 Gb RAM
512 Mb ATI RADEON X700 SE

Thanks. Centurion
Minimum 1G CPU...
Minimum 1G RAM...

So with adding some RAM your good.

That vid card may not run Aero though...visual enhancementsYou have 1.5GB of RAM, so you should be good there.  And, I believe that video card is quite adequate to run Aero's visual effects.  I initially tested Win 7 (RC) with a nVidia GEFORCE FX 5200 (128MB) and it displayed Aero, although the Windows Experience Index for Graphics was only 2.0.  So, I can't imagine you'd have any problem whatsoever with those specs.  Whoooops...i mistook the vid RAM for the ONBOARD...
Sorry.Well that's okay. You also mistook your for you're Nah....just tired today.Pinky finger OVERWORKED?  Golf injury..... Haha Nice chat.

Thanks guys Try It Free for 90 Days...If I insall Windows 7 Will I be able to play games too? or those will lagI have Windows 7 and I play golf all I want. Then when I come home I spend some time at the computer.

Sorry - couldn't resist. From everything I read and hear you should have no problem - though it couldn't hurt to add more ram.lol. You're a funny guy. I like you. Well, don't like me too much. I already have more friends than I know what to do with. There's a 2 year waiting list just to get on my Christmas Card list.here's what I say to my friends:

Wow, I was just thinking the same thing.NEVER even thought of that.the reason I thought of it, was although my laptop has a modem jack, it seems rare even in full size laptops like mine; and netbooks are very skimpy little fellows, so I imagine, at the least, a modem WOULD be an option- if even that. You know what? I've never even seen a netbook up close.

Solve : Incredimail spyware??

Answer»

Hi there
My friend recently installed incredemail. Personally I find it useless crap, but more importantly: is it dangerous for your pc?
I googled and HALF of the results claimed that incredemail indeed is spyware, and others say that incredimail is harmless.
Which should I believe? There were some privacy ISSUES in the PAST with Incredimail, but I believe, it's clean now.

Solve : 4 deep blonk sound every 30 sec around while the pc starts up?

Answer»

Dear Sir or madame
My version of pc is an Acer Aspire M5640, intel (R) Core(TM) DUO CPU [email protected], 4GB RAM, NVIDIA GEFORCE *^)) GS Windows vista (TM) Home Premium 32 bit
I did a disk clean up also with the section to get rid of the shadow copies and to have a recent restore point.
Then i restarted the computer and I hear a noise during starting a bonk sound every few seconds for a couple of min. Then it stops. It has been driving me up the wall every time I START the computer. I check the PERFORMANCE section and it said with a pop up " These startup programs are causing Windows to start slowly. File name Disc Space Cleanup Manager for Windows.
I checked with help section and it said to DISABLE this in the startup running programs in windows defender to disable it. I did it several TIMES and it still is making the same sound. I am very tired  trying to fix this. The noise is something like  when you have just pluged in a new hardware you loaded than it continues for over 2 min or so.Going like bonk, bonk, bonk, and bonk.
I checked performans and the new plash player was not PROPERLY installed. So I reinstalled it. uninstalled the printer and installe it back and still the same 4 bonk sounds. I disconected all the usb ports and the monitor with just the plug for the pc vista and still doing the same. Can you help are u infected with anything ?

have u contacted acer about the issueI would like to thank you for responding
I contacted Microsoft because Acer would not help me because my warranty ran out by 3 days and they wanted 99. for a half hour. I contacted Microsoft and they fixed the problem.
The problem was in the device manager under potable devices they all had a yellow triangle with a ! in it so none of the drivers were working. Also they fixed the disk cleanup manager starting up when I start the computer. Finally no more bonk noise. I want to wish you a merry Christmas and Microsoft never chared me anything to fix my computer< YAHOO!!!

Solve : Programs not working, what caused it??

Answer»

I dont know whether this is a software or hardware issue, and apparently neither does DELL after my 2 hour phone adventure which ended with no information gained, and getting transferred about 7 times due to idiocy on their end.

I have two programs which can not connect to the INTERNET.

Mozilla firefox, and Impulse.  Mozilla stopped working after the update yesterday, Impulse was installed within the past 3 days.

I have no firewall running (firefox forum admins scanned my computer with a program to check), IE and FF show no proxy enabled.

I can connect to the internet fine through IE, which I am posting with now.

I have uninstalled, and reinstalled both programs.  I have enabled my firewall, added firefox to the allowed program list, and it didnt work, removed firefox from the allowed program list, still didnt work, RE-added firefox to the allowed program list, still nothing.  I disabled the firewall again.

I have cleared cookies and cache of both IE and firefox.

What part of windows 7 would cause these two programs (and most likely other new ones) to not be able to connect to the internet?

TECHNICAL information which may or may not be helpful is included in the attachments.  I believe startup is the output of a program that impulse sent me to HELP them diagnose the problem, though I cant remember exactly.

Hopefully I can get some help here.

[Saving space, attachment DELETED by admin]Have you run a full scan with BOTH your av utility and MalwareBytes? If not, please do so.Alright, something in the registry popped up with malwarebytes.  Ill POST another reply once my AV scans

Solve : Forced shut down event log?

Answer»

Can anyone tell me if in the event logs or anywhere else this sort of activity is made known, it is possible to distinguish between forced SHUT DOWNS and system FAILURES? So for example...will the EVENTS logs reveal anything different for forced shut downs during start up to those where say the power cord was pulled or if the system cut out because it say began to violently overheat?

I am guessing the events logs will show the same thing...and I'm talking about a cheap Sony Viao here running VistaThe event log will yield the correct error code (Ex. Event 41.) and Microsoft has documented the most probable cause of certain forced shutdown such as this

Solve : Protection against a keylogger!?

Answer»

Today, I found that hacking into SOMEONES account is a child's play when the hacker has installed a keylogger on the victim's computer. There are certain PROGRAMS available that can fight a keylogger but it WOULD be better if someone guides me through some manual steps which can be useful against being a victim of hacking through a keylogger.Practice safe surfing...
Use and setup limited access accounts for other Users...

Other than that just be aware.Any decent anti-virus software will PICK up most keyloggers based of their BEHAVIOR.

What email service are you using? What security do you have installed?

What anti-virus ??  Firewall ?? etcMorning  i am using windows ESSENTIALS for eveything firewall and antivirus .tried others but they all seem to work against each other this is simple. Are you having this problem with both Windows Live Mail and Sky Emails or just one?

With Sky Emails, as far as I can tell they only have a web-based version (accessed through a web browser). Is that what you're using to access it?

With Windows Live Mail, are you using the Windows Live Mail program or Windows Live Mail web-based version (through your browser)?

What browser are you using? Have you checked the security settings within the browser? Have you tried another browser?

You mentioned that you only have this problem with certain attachments, but not all. Is there something common about the affected attachments (same file type (ZIP, EXE, etc.), same sender, something else? Quote from: quaxo on November 21, 2011, 01:16:34 AM

Solve : installer_msi__win_msi wants to unzip and load to....?

Answer»

On my windows 7 Velocity desktop I keep getting a blue/green window that displays on the screen asking me to unzip and install files to a folder in my "C" Drive. The window or unzipper /extractor is presented by a company called: "Files Compressed" and the unzipped program (?) is called: installer_msi__win_msi. I can cancel the unzipping, but in about two hours or so the window will display again. It always displays when I boot. I have Norton Internet Security and have "run" the scanner without the program being removed. No software additions to the comp. excepting  Logitec Webcam Software.
Any ideas? Thank You.Do you have a install disc?
if so, RE-INSTALL!!!!!
p.s. BACK up first
Ignore the above post.

What led up to this (What is new or different since the last time everything worked properly)? And what happens when you boot to safe mode?Allan,
I started the machine in safe mode and the window does not come up. Nothing for 20 min. since boot.
All we have done is installed (plugged in) a Logitec WebCam.
the cam works fine, but of course I went ahead and installed the software that comes with it 'cause I'm curious. To tell you the truth I think the webcam was installed about a monthbefore this blue/green panel showed up.
Went to MSCONFIG to see the services and start prog. but nothing shows in their entries at all to start a "File Installer" prog. I recognize all the programs that are checked to run.
Ran Windows Update and it installed an Office 2007 update and a Serv Pk. 3 update.
Restarted.
I took a screen shot of the window as it shows on the PC if you wish to see it.
Using Image Stack:http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/545/f03bedc51b8546819431989.jpg/Just try to go to task manager and right click the name of the program and then hit Go to Process and then kill the app. Repeat until gone!   Went to MSCONFIG > Sevices turned off...still comes up as a running window looking for a prog. to "open" its files.
Went to Admin> windows prog. left open and turned off Windows installer...still opens and spins looking for a prog. to open.
The prog. is "off" told not to start up and it still keeps coming back. MUST be adware or a spyware prog. that pulls open the WIN. Installer TRYING to get it going so it can unload. So I ran my Spyware Sweeper and it doesn't find the spyware prog.
Task Mgr.? worth a try at this point.ok we might have to connect via remote desktopok use mikogo and session id is 528-310-682As a Forum and a Help Chat we do not support remote desktop to other people's PC's for obvious reasons...

Solve : BSOD during WAIK Customization of WinPE Image?

Answer»

If wrong fourm, please advise.

I'm running Windows Automated Installation Kit (the original 2/13/2007 version) on an up-to-date Windows XP SP3 machine, trying to produce a customized WinPE 2.0 image file to BOOT from CD.  If I MAKE no modifications to the original winpe.wim, (for example, following steps in at http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd799303), I have no problems.

After imagex is used to mount the original winpe.wim, however, ANY reference to the \mount directory (with Windows Explorer, with 'dir' at the WAIK COMMAND PROMPT, or with another WAIK command such as 'peimg /list /image=c:\winpe\mount' from the more comprehensive steps at http://www.svrops.com/svrops/articles/winvistape2.htm) seems to result in the Blue Screen of Death.  (The BSOD says, "STOP 0x00000024..." and mentions ntfs.sys.  And yes, I did disable my virus scanner before doing any of this.)  I get the same results with WAIK for Windows Vista SP1 (4/9/2009 version), which is also supposed to run on XP, although neither version explicitly mentions SP3.

Anybody know what I'm doing wrong?

I have win 7. and I know I can right click on the Desktop and go to Personlize.
Then the Bottum Left go to Desktop.

Then in the Middel of the screen you see 3. Options  Small   Mediume   Large.
If I pick Mediume I don't like it because it moves my Icones up from the Bottum of the screen to far.

And I have a lot of space it leaves as just the Desktop but it want let me put my Icones down close to the Bottum.

Now one THING I changed the windows theme to Clasic LOOK so how can I just change the size of the TEXT just the text on the icones? Quote from: nymph4 on NOVEMBER 25, 2011, 03:49:59 PM

4. Advanced appearance settings
5. In "Item:" dropdown, select Icon
6. Can change Icon Size/Font Name/Font Size/Bold/Italic
7. OK
8. Save Changes
9. Close Personalization
Thank you for your help I just need help understanding on thing?

I now know how to MAKE just Text biger from what you told me but I don't know why one thing happens.

I can make the Text on Icones biger the way you told me and my Icones can be placed very clos to the Bottum of the screen.

But if I Right click Desktop and pick Viue.

Then pick say Mediume Size this will make just the Icones Biger and not the text I get this.

But I wont be able to move the Icones very close to the Bottum of the screen.

Why?? Quote from: nymph4 on November 25, 2011, 09:06:41 PM

But I wont be able to move the Icones very close to the Bottum of the screen.

Why??

Maybe you have checked "Auto Arrange icons" and "Align icons to grid" in View?Sorry it is working now I think it was a Glitch.

Now one more thing it is all working like you told me to just make text biger.

But if I Right Click on Desktop and go to Personolize.

And then click Desktop in the middle of the screen you get 3. options    small...mediume....larg.

This seems to make even the Icones biger or smaller not just the text.

Thios is why I did not like this way am I right that this is what it does this way the Text and Icones togather??Maybe you need to set Customize DPI size for your preference http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/443-dpi-display-size-settings-change.html

Solve : automatic user log in?

Answer»

I am running Windows 7 home Premium. In an attempt to get administrative privileges, I created a new account thinking  I could log on using it . Previously I had had an automatic log on of my user account, no pw or user name. After this CHANGE and trying for an hour to figure it out I DECIDED to go back to my old user log in.
I followed the steps here

http://www.windowspasswordsrecovery.com/automatically-log-on-windows-7.htm

but when I log on now I get a message telling me I have the wrong pw and then giving me a user account with the pw box . I can click though without entering a password and it will take me to my old user account. How can I fix this so I bypass this loging and incorrect pw message?

ThanksDid you already read this?
How can I eliminate password in Windows 7
They say you can not really eliminate it. Almost, but you still need it.
yes I have tried this several time. The box is not checked that requires a password when I get there, so there is nothing to uncheck. The message I get when I boot up windows says I have the wrong password so somewhere it must THINK It needs a pw, very confusingYes. You are not the first not grip about the  Windows 7 password policy. Here is one of the answers from Microsoft:
Quote

Please try to go to Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\User Accounts, click Manager User Accounts; in the users list, select the particular user which you want to remove password, and try to reset the password with a BLANK password to check if it can work.
Still, for some operations you need the password.  Here is a link that might OFFER some help. Or at least explain the problem

That link  is a forum discussion and does not provide a clear answer. For the moment, that is the best I can offer. If you decide to edit the registry, make a registry backup first.

Solve : Screen goes black randomly... but remains backlit??

Answer»

Hey there, i know this is going to sound like a generic problem, but A) I am stubborn and am sure this can be fixed one way or another, and B) The problem has a few differences compared to what i have noticed in other posts.

Basically, for the last month or so, my laptops screen has been freezing...

So far it has three different ways:

Screen goes Black (remains backlit), no sound, no CTRL + ALT + DEL, only way to escape is to manually SHUTDOWN (hold down power button).
Screen goes White, no sound, no CTRL + ALT + DEL, only way to escape is to manually shutdown (hold down power button).
Screen goes a random colour with dark vertical lines going through it, no sound, no CTRL + ALT + DEL, only way to escape is to manually shutdown (hold down power button)

So far, i have cleaned the computer out, replaced drivers, ran multiple VIRUS scans using various scanners (not all installed at the same time lol).

My last attempt to correct this was to uninstall windows completely, and re-install it. (although i did GO from win7 x32 to win7 x64)
For a while it seems to have worked, and i was even able to play games that hadn't worked previously.
Now the problem has started again... so far it only happens after i have played Oblivion for a few minutes, whereas before it was about 5-10 minutes after booting up XD

The problem disappears entirely when i run the PC in safe mode, so have a feeling this is some kind of software problem.

I also considered overheating issues but it doesn't feel physically hot, and as far as i can remember from the last time i checked the temperature readings were within parameters.

My current specs are:

Operating System: Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit (6.1, Build 7601) Service Pack 1 (7601.win7sp1_gdr.110622-1506)
System Manufacturer: Acer
System Model: Aspire 5536
BIOS: Ver 1.00PARTTBL
Processor: AMD Athlon(tm) X2 Dual-Core QL-64 (2 CPUs), ~2.1GHz
Memory: 4096MB RAM
Card name: ATI Radeon HD 3200 Graphics (Onboard)
DirectX Version: DirectX 11
DX Setup Parameters: Not found
DxDiag Version: 6.01.7601.17514 64bit Unicode

If ANYONE has any ideas can you please let me know? Or if i've forgotten any details, again, please let me know lol

Thank you in advance, and sorry if this is posted in the wrong section... wasn't quite sure where to put it ^_^
Does it do this at any particular time? (when watching videos, sitting idle, playing games, etc.)

How long does the computer usually run before the issue comes up?

This is going to sound weird, but TRUST me for a minute. Try uninstalling the graphics driver completely. Reboot, and don't allow Windows to reinstall it. Try running the computer without the driver for a while. Graphically it won't perform very well, but it will help test a theory.

When in safe mode, Windows won't load anything unnecessary, including the graphics driver. If you've done a fresh install of Windows and drivers and you still have an issue, it's possible the graphics chipset is having an issue. If this is the case, in a normal boot without the driver, it will use the graphics chipset much like it does in safe mode.

If it works fine, try reinstalling the driver with a fresh download from the laptop manufacturer's website. If you start having issues again, I would bet the chipset is probably malfunctioning.

Any chance this thing is still under warranty?yeah already tried that a little while ago... runs perfectly fine in safe mode... and in standard vga mode... tried installing from Acer and from ATI but always crashes after playing a game for a while...

I am however just testing something that hadn't occurred to me until a little while ago... so far, i know it sounds weird... but the games that are playing up are 32bit??? ones that are specifically 64bit seem to be running fine so far :S

so for now i am continuing the tests, but there is a possbility that for some reason my pc doesn't like running 32bit software anymore :S

it only seems to happen so far when running games... HD video's, DVD's, all working fine under this 64bit Win 7, when running 32bit win 7 it was black/white/bar screening after about 5 mins of use :S

*EDIT* also from the original clean install... it was working perfectly... its something thats happened in the last day or two... dont ask me what, because i haven't actually installed anything (as far as i know) for about 4-5 days...If it works fine without the driver, but plays up when the driver is installed no matter where you get it from, then it's either overheating or the chipset is damaged/malfunctioning. I can't think of any other thing that would cause it to do that with the driver installed.

What games are you talking about specifically? There are only about 20 games ever made that have 64-bit specific versions (either natively or through an official patch).

Solve : "This computer is not supported by the recovery disks." Error??

Answer»

Hello
I recently Changed the HDD on this computer, because my old one went bad.
I changed it, everything was GOING well. But then when I tried to reinstall windows with the recovery disks, I got a nasty surprise.
I got the ERROR:
Quote

This computer is not supported by the recovery disks.
You will not be able to recover this computer.
OK
Any help wood be grateful.
CarlosIf this is an HP (or even if it is not) you could have a corrupt BIOS. The recovery disk reads an ID string in the BIOS to check if the machine is the correct MAKE and model. You should contact the maker's Technical Support department.
The Problem is that this comp isn't under Warranty, And I don't have a windows CD.
I don't know if I could afford $*** for tech support.
CarlosThere's nothing we can do to help you bypass this. If they are indeed the disks that came with the computer, they should work. If not, you will NEED to contact the manufacturer or check their website for information on what might be the cause.Couldn't have stated it better myself...

Solve : Screen covered with something elastic?

Answer»

some times my laptop screen will be cover with something elastic. I've noticed this kind THINGS for about four time, however one FUNNY THING about it is that, whenever this happen if I just touch / press the screen, it will be normal again.

Please what COULD this be?Perhaps you have a screen protector over your monitor?  Pressing on any air bubbles may take them away for a time.  If there is a film you can peel off, it won't hurt ANYTHING to do so, and you'll fix the problem.

Solve : Screen turning to black - PC not responding?

Answer»

Hi all,

this is my first topic here, so please be nice  Also I do apologize in advance for my approximative English, I'm belgian and speak French, but I will do my best to be clear.

My problem is :

My computer does reboot randomly when playing games (especially BF3) but I don't know if the game is really causing troubles.
I can play 10 minutes or sometimes more 2-3 hours, then my screen goes black (sound freezes) with 'no hdmi signal' message. My pc then keeps turning, but nothing responds (no ctrl alt del), no CPU led. I have to shutdown and then reboot to get everything working back (sometimes it keeps saying no video signal on the screen even if the computer is booting)

I've been searching for 2 weeks on forums and nothing seems to be working for me :
- 6 hours memtest didn't find anything
- CPU/GPU test with OCCT software (stress tests..)
- My bios and drivers are up to date
- I bought a new PSU (antec 600w)
- I did a new clean install

Windows event logs shows only one message '' KERNEL POWER ERROR ID 41 task 63 "

My config :
Windows 7 Ultimate x64
Asrock 770 (new)
AMD Athlon II 6400 quadcore
4Gb Adata DDR3 1333mhz
GTX550 ti 1gb (new)
PSU Antec 600w (new)
2 standard 500gb hard disks (western digital and maxtor, both working fine)

If you have any CLUE, I'd appreciate it a lot, Many PEOPLE are suffering of this and giving many fixes but I can't find mine.
Thx!

Sorry for language mistakes, tell me if you can't catch something I said  Researching this issue on your behalf a common thread of probable cause keeps recurring. I don't know if you have been posting this issue on other tech forums (or just viewing them) under a different name but i have found when searching with this " KERNEL POWER ERROR ID 41 task 63" parameter a single solution keeps arising that does solve the problem.
It is that users having this issue have had more than one sound device (and drivers) installed and once all but one were removed the issue disappeared. Is that possibly your case? Have you investigated if it is what happens if you reduce to only one audio device?truenorthThanks for your quick answer truenorth

Indeed I have multiple audio drivers, the one of my mobo 'High definition audio controller' (4times in the peripherals list) and the one of my Geforce graphic card. I tried to uninstall the motherboard hd audio drivers and disable the integrated audio chipset in the bios, but it comes back everytime.

The Nvidia hd audio driver is uninstalled, but still encountering the problem so far.Hey,

just giving some feedback, I dit what truenorth and Blong told me, and everything has been working fine since my last post.
I hope it's fixed. (It was a driver problem, I disabled all the chipset on my mobo and deleted useless drivers, the only ones left are Nvidia drivers)

Thanks a lot guys Please confirm all your drivers are up to date

Solve : Adios Vista, Hello 7??

Answer»

My emachines EL1300G-01w came with Vista Home Basic 32 bit installed. SP-2 has been installed. It has an AMD Athlon 2650e processor and 2.0 GB RAM. I'm sick of Vista and have heard nothing but good about "7".

First, which version of "7" will give me the most BANG for my BUCK? I, of course, use email & surf the internet, do some photo editing and some desktop publishing.

I'm told that an upgrade to 7 would have to match my version of Vista unless I do a clean install. Anticipating this, I plan to do a backup at Carbonite before reformatting.

Any advise as to how to proceed from here? Quote

Any advise as to how to proceed from here?

Really? The advantage of Windows 7 over Vista is over stated.

Myself, I THINK you should just wait a bit a bu y a new machine with Windows 7 already on it. For general purpose work you will not see a difference unless you also move up to new hardware. Thanks for your reply, although it's not what I expected, I will consider it.Not what you expect?       You said it is a EL1300G-01w, which is the low end model and does not have a piratical upgrade path. Sorry if I hurt your feelings, but that model was a loser from the start.

Microsoft Windows 7 Professional 64-bit  sells for about $189 at some stores. But I don't think it will run on the machine you have.

But the OEM version of Windows 7 Home Premium is now included on naked desktops for under $4000 or less. Use you old monitor, add some memory, then you will have a PC that makes a difference.

See if you can get somebody to buy the old computer.

The computer will run win7 fine, but There really isn't any good reason to upgrade from Vista to 7, and it won't really be worth the cost.I stand corrected. It does run Windows 7.  Thanks to both of you for your input. I knew it was a low end machine when I bought it but it was all I could afford at the time. I have heard many COMMENTS that Vista was not as good of an OS as XP or 7 so thought a change might be in order. I personally don't like Vista, I agree both XP and Windows 7 is better.
If you are just doing Internet based work, and a bit of picture editing viewing etc, then keep your Vista anyway.
Otherwise sell it, and buy an updated computer with Windows 7 OEM already installed (ie Don't purchase Windows 7 separately, too costly) Quote from: fordee9r on November 30, 2011, 03:22:30 AM
I have heard many comments that Vista was not as good of an OS as XP or 7

This is a stance, I've never understood. Vista IS 7. Nothing about 7 directly addresses any of the loud complaints made about Vista. The only real reason it seems faster is because the hardware is faster. There were some improvements here and there, but nothing anybody would possibly perceive. There are certainly a lot of changes to Windows 7, but the number of differences in no way justify the ridiculous disparity in popular opinion between Windows Vista and 7. Some people call Windows 7 a "Service Pack" for Vista, or that "Microsoft was fixing their mistake". Well that's a pretty dumb stance, since 3 years passed between Vista and 7, which was about average for Windows versions  (XP to Vista was the exception to the rule).

I still hold to the opinion that pretty much the sole difference between Vista and 7 has nothing to do with software, but it all boils down to better marketing. An Open Beta that makes people feel they are actually involved; and, the beta's were free, which gave people a taste of Windows 7. A lot of those people had never used Vista and were saying "well it's better than Vista".

Of course, the truth was that "it" was the marketing behind Windows 7, not anything about the OS. Many times I've seen people declare that Windows 7 "fixes" the mistakes Microsoft made with Vista. They can never seem to describe what these mistakes are, or provide even a single, discernable account where "This is a mistake with Windows Vista". But judging from the way they talk about Windows 7, clearly it fixes all these "mistakes". of course with such ill-defined mistakes that you cannot even describe them to a third party I find it HARD to believe they can declare those mistakes "fixed" in Windows 7.

BC is very knowledgeable more than half the time. Like he says, putting time and money into Windows 7 is not a good investment on your budget.

Here is a plan.
1. Sell your old machine for $150
2. Add $120 you would pay for Windows 7
3. And about $50 you would have paid to upgrade the memory.
4. Now you have $320 to buy a new e-machine that performs better.

I was using the program "MagIcDIsc", and I have no idea how it happened, or what I pushed, but quite a few icons on my desktop and all my program FILE icons have changed to the "MagIcDIsc" icon. It's like all the files on my computer are trying to open through MagIcDIsc. It's very irritating.MagicDisc (freeware) http://www.magiciso.com/tutorials/miso-magicdisc-overview.htm

They'll remain that way until they are associated with another program. Associations don't revert themselves.

The association was made by the Original Poster when they chose it in the Open With Dialog. Uninstalling an application will remove associations that the application knows about, such as those it associated with itself, but it would defy the Windows Logo guidelines for an uninstaller to remove associations created by the user.

Solve : Messed up desktop Display settings?

Answer»
So I really messed up here.
It would be great if you guys could help.

I have a Dell Studio XPS with Windows Vista hooked up to a Samsung 32inch 720p HD TV.

I was trying to play Braid. When I booted the game, it briefly showed the game but then my SCREEN went blank and my TV displayed the message (not supported mode)

I figured the resolution was off and tried playing with the display settings to try to fix it. I accidentally upped the refresh rate of my monitor and then my screen went blank and I could not see or change anything.

Booted in safe mode to try to fix it, but then upped the resolution in safe mode and the screen went blank again. Now if I try to boot in safe mode my monitor does not display anything.

I can boot setup, but it SEEMS that it is.
Is there any way to change display settings in setup or any other way to fix this?

Thanks Just boot to 'VGA' mode (also under the F8 menu)
Once the computer starts up, then remove the Video driver from Device Manager, and then restart to Normal Mode.
Allow normal mode to re-install the Video driver, then restart.
All should be good after that Laptopor desktop computer ?
you should also check all leads

Test all leads that attach to your hard drive including ELECTRICAL extensions,IDE,SATA
the leads from your ((motherboard to your hard drive)) make sure they have a secure dust free connections and are not faulty or just replace them they might be faulty

a computer NEEDS its power and data to travel through every working device and to continue its cycle and to have an end so any faulty leads will end up with a computer error
also
you might have to remove your graphics CARD to make sure the socket is clean
restart your computer the reinstall it this should activate found new hardware wizard
if your computer came with a mother board disk the drivers could be on it

click start control panel, display, desktop you can select a different desktop from the drop down list
or a browse button where you can select different pictures this may vary depending on your operating system

also you can change the settings for more or less pixels or from the drop down list pick the appropriate level of color range or troubleshoot also select advanced then general dpi normal size, larger size or custom settings
always click APPLY after making any changes

hope this helps you

You might want to check this out too: http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/battlefield-3-graphics-performance,3063-2.html

This is clearly a very graphics-intensive game. According to http://www.battlefield.com/battlefield3/1/bf3-faq the recommended specs are:

RECOMMENDED SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
OS: WINDOWS 7 64-BIT
PROCESSOR: QUAD-CORE CPU
MEMORY: 4 GB
HARD DRIVE: 20 GB
GRAPHICS CARD: DIRECTX 11 COMPATIBLE WITH 1024 MB RAM (NVIDIA GEFORCE GTX 560 OR ATI RADEON 6950)
SOUND CARD: DIRECTX COMPATIBLE
KEYBOARD AND MOUSE
DVD ROM DRIVE

I have noticed that these requirements are for 1080p and above-if you are looking to play at lower resolutions a HD 5850/6850 may suffice.
Lets look at the HD 6950 for now-http://www.amd.com/us/products/desktop/graphics/amd-radeon-hd-6000/hd-6950/Pages/amd-radeon-hd-6950-overview.aspx#3

You need at least a 500W PSU with 2 75W PCI-E power connectors. I would recommend upgrading your PSU-it has a maximum 500W output and we don't want something to go wrong, such as drops/spikes in line voltage causing damage to your system.
A DECENT Cooler Master 600W PSU:

A Radeon HD 6950 that is customized by Gigabyte for BETTER cooling:

It does not provide the best bang for buck though, if you are not planning to game on EXTREME resolutions, you may want to consider some of the other cards

Solve : Won't boot up. Starts but goes to a blank screen with blinking curser??

Hi.  I have a hp G62-225NR Notebook running windows 7.  I was browsing the internet as usual when the COMPUTER suddenly shut off and restarted itself, then not too long after it restarted itself it shut off again accept this time it only came to a blank screen with the blinking curser at the top.  I've tried troubleshooting online and I went to the BIO and restored default setup and did the hard drive and memory test which both passed.  I can't get to safe mode, or don't know properly how, and when I hit f11 for system recovery it just goes back to the blank screen with the blinking curser.  The computer was working just fine, it seems like there must be a fix for this. For safemode you need to repeatedly tap F8 before the Win splash screen...one tap won't do it...

If that is the case, then I am almost certain that it is the CMOS battery. To Linux711

I removed the cosmos battery and took it and had it tested, he said it showed 3 Volt which is what it should be.
I tried RUINING the bios update again A14 and A15, same error: cannot continua because.. 1 no battery, tried ruining the update as you said, with AC UNPLUGGED, same result.
Dell recommended that I at least update to A14. A15 fixed a problem with Lo Jack which I use,
I meant everthing is running fine AC or not except for the Bios update, except now the broadband manager is not working, so I need to fix it.

Solve : win 7 prob?

Answer»

I have WIN 7 ultimate duo core 2.o my problem is everytime I click to the next window it will either slow down the button and not do anything, I  slowed down the mouse click but it STILL does it ,Also if i go back one it goes back two just checking ....  clicking other open windows past the initial one causes mouse to screw up?The mouse works as it should ,but when I  try to click back (even if I click once) it will either bring me back to the first window or not check off any check boxes, I would have to really slow down over the check boxes to make the box have a check mark for deleting and I notice that when pressing buttons( not mouse button) the buttons on windows are slow to press so I would have to click more than once to even get anywhereHow does it work in safe mode?

What is new or different since the last time everything worked properly (ie, new hw, new sw, virus, error, etc)?Nothing has been added just windows updates. This has been going on for a while I thought this would correct itself by slowing down the mouse clicks but, I still SEE no improvements but it becomes annoying to have to double click to get a response could this be a virus? if so I will have to format the whole thingUninstall the mouse in Control Panel/System and re-boot...Ok did that  but still having slow reactions when pressing buttons on tool bar I am still pressing more than twice to get a reactionDid you consider it may be the toolbar itself ? ?

Unplug it? I really don't know where you heard that.

You reboot and as soon as the system starts you begin tapping the F8 function key. That will take you to the advance boot option screen from which you can choose safe mode. Alternatively, you can do it by selecting the safe mode boot option in msconfg.Ok tried safe mode, but could not use the net, all buttons would work but that includes reg mode, also now what it seems to be only when using menu bar for the net buttons seem to be slow in responding.Try running Windows 7 using Selective startup http://support.microsoft.com/kb/331796Open msconfig and on the General tab choose "selective startup" (UNCHECK all three items) and reboot. Does the problem still occur? If not, start adding items back to msconfig one or two at a time, rebooting after each change, until the problem reappears and you'll have identified the offending process. This is clearly a time consuming procedure, but it is the best way to determine if some process loading with the system is the cause of your problem.

After you've isolated the cause, do not use msconfig to permanently disable the process. Instead, if it is a service go to START - RUN and type: services.msc (then press enter) and disable the service OR, if it a program, you can download & run a simple app such as MIKE Lin's Startup Control Panel (http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml) to enable, disable, or otherwise manage startup programs.
Thanks you have it spot on it seems to be these widgets clock, temp, calender I will stop these little startups

If I am on a website and want to go to another website but be ABLE to come back to the FIRST one I can not do the Minamize window thing like I did with xp.

How do I do this thanks?I think you can still click on the underscore line to minimize the window.  Did you go to the other website with the same browser or open another one.  Tabbed browsing with IE is pretty easy.  To open another tab and stay on your current page just Cntl+T.I did try to open a new Tab but I just get a Blank screen telling me Your Most Resant Websites.

And there are a fue here.

But they don't work or I am not useing it right.

And if I do say go to Google.com and Minamize the window.

The iE Icon on the Taskbar goes away so I can't click on it to open a new window.

The only thing on the Taskbar is the Google.com iE that I minamized.

But I think I may know what is going on but I don't know how to get to it?

There is a setting for let iE have One Instance At A TIME

I get the impression you don't UNDERSTAND the purpose of a tabbed browser.  With a tabbed browser -  which includes all modern browsers, I believe - you don't need to open a separate window for each website.  You can open many websites at the same time in one browser window. You might try reading this.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tab_%28GUI%29OK this will help a lot.

Say I am on TigerDirect.com and I want to go to Google.com and do some searching around and then to to a DVD Store.

Then I want to go back to TigerDirect.com but I don't want to have to type in the address again.

I do not know how to do this??Tabs...
See Here...Patios link is better than mine to answer your questions.  But as an example, I usually use fire fox and generally have 9 tabs open.  Some sites refresh automatically, and some you need to hit the refresh button.  But most sites you can go from tab to tab much faster than retyping in site names.

BC once said he usually has about 60 TAPS open.

Solve : Formatting 690g to FAT32?

Answer»

I am trying to format my D drive (NTFS) into FAT32 format because I heard it would be much better for downloads. The disk manager tool will not let me format the partition so I am wondering if there are any PROGRAMS that could do this? Please keep in mind this is an internal 690gb drive.

Thank you! Whoever told you that was out of his gourd... Quote from: kinoman5 on December 04, 2011, 05:53:51 PM

I heard it would be much better for downloads.Thank you!

This is nonsense as patio says.
I do agree with patio and Salmon Trout but what I am wondering is if you might have heard someone talk about Extended FAT instead of FAT32.  You should be able to do it with Extended FAT.  This would get you past the file size and partition size limits of FAT32.  I don't have any statistics on performance between NTFS vs exFAT.Before Win-7, I've never used NTFS and have had no problem formatting a 500 gig drive in FAT-32.

For a storage partition, not an OS partition, FAT-32 does give you more access and control over the drive, even from a DOS boot disk, if necessary.  If you're working with large video files you may want to have an NTFS partition for those, as a FAT-32 part. will have a file size limit that you might run into.  I keep one NTFS partition just for Video conversions.

But having said all that, Windows XP will run just fine on a FAT-32 partition, but Vista, Win-7 and Win-8 will not.
Regardless of what OS I'm going to PUT on a drive, or even if I'm just setting it up as a backup drive, I always use my DOS Utilities disk (floppy, CD or Flash Drive) to run "FDISK" to set up the one or more partitions, and if I want to format that partition, I just use the DOS Format command.
I use the DOS that came with Windows ME, which is more capable than that which came with Win-98.

I was having all sorts of PROBLEMS getting Win-8/DP installed on an old HD, till I wiped the disk clean with FDISK, creating just one partition on the 200gig drive, and then Win-8 installed without any more problems.

There is always a way, to do what you want with your computer, whether someone calls it nonsense or not.

Happy Holidays!

Windows XP and later will not format a partition larger than 32GB as FAT32. I can't recall if this same limitation applied for Windows 2000, though.

If you are in a situation where you need a DOS boot disk to access the drive, you will probably be FOCUSSED on fixing the machine so it can boot into windows anyway. Additionally, when you can boot any old Linux distro CD and access NTFS drives, I question the wisdom of ever booting into a pure DOS environment for 'diagnostic' purposes on a modern PC, especially since the real reason isn't so much for "diagnostics" as it is to feed nostalgia.

If you really want to format this drive FAT32 then use EASEUS Partition MASTER its free, I've used it.

Solve : Random Windows 7 crashes?

Answer»

Windows 7 Pro 32 bit.
Most of the time things will run fine (as well as POSSIBLE on a pentium iv.)
However, the computer is experiencing random crashes. I recently installed a WD Caviar Blue Pata/IDE 320GB HDD to replace a bad 80GB disk. Windows 7 installed successfully, however random crashes occur, especially with flash player, but sometimes when the pc is idle or near idle. I can't move the keyboard or mouse, and have to HARD reboot. This PC has gone through a lot of cord unpluggings, the cause of the faulty 80GB hdd.

Specs:
1.6 GHZ Pentium 4
2 GB DDR RAM
ATI Radeon HD 4650; 1 GB graphics RAM
aforementioned 320 GB WD Caviar Blue IDE

I know for a fact that the problem does not lie with the simple fact that I am loading win 7 on a pentium 4. The previous HDD was a dual boot between 7 and XP Pro. O/S corruption, maybe, however it was installed less than a month ago.

Why unplug when it "crashes"?  Just hold the power button in for 4 seconds.
I don't unplug, I use the hardware reboot button. What I meant was that it sometimes is accidentally unplugged due to a mediocre 3 to 2 prong converter. When it crashes, or more correctly a freeze, I cannot move the mouse, cannot open Task Manager using ctrl/alt/delete, and cannot trigger the start menu via the windows key. The power supply reads "Model LPJ2"I'm wondering you might have bumped something inside the computer when you replaced the hard drive.  So, I suggest you open the computer and check all cable connections and perhaps remove RAM and re-seat it.  The original hdd was bumped while the system was running, hence the damage. I hope that the other components are still OK. I haven't had a freeze since last night (and the pc was left on with photoshop running overnight), so maybe this was just something that happened for a couple days. I will assure that the cables are firm and re-seat the RAM. Thanks Soybean.Well, after an hour using a flash website (flash seems to trigger the crashes more than anything else), the machine locked up. The Ram Re-seat didn't seem to have an impact. Sometimes it takes an hour or two before a crash. Note: the CPU heatsink fan is really dusty. I don't have any more compressed air, so no go in removing the dust. Help appreciated.I'd get another can of air...
Quote from: patio on December 11, 2011, 08:07:07 AM
I'd get another can of air...

Absolutely.I bought a new compressed air can and dusted my PC. One crash since, again using a flash intensive site. It seems that now my problems are just with flash. Should I try to uninstall then reinstall it? I am at the latest version of Flash Player.

Solve : Computer using more ram the usual?

Answer»

Now I'm not saying like 200MB more, it's using 3,5gig more ram then usual, the only thing that changed was that I installed drivers for AMD card (the catalyst driver pack) and a new keyboard (G19) I disabled most stuff so for like 5-30min when I start the computer I use the RAM I usually use (1,2gig) but then It rise to 6,1gig.

I haven't seen any different processors then the new Z7LcdMonitor.exe, LCDClock.exe, LCDMon.exe, LGDCore.exe and some new Win7 processes I swear I haven't seen before but a Google search says the are fine.

Anyone know what could cause this?

Edit: and yea I tried to kill those processes I mentioned but the RAM didn't fall down.Out of curiosity, I wonder, how much ram does the pc use in safe mode? When it started it used 999MB after 30min in idle it was using 637MB of ram, but I should also mention that when it use around 6gig ram it sometimes just drop it down to 1,2gig in a few minutes, but it's totally random on how much ram it want to use. What is actually using the RAM? I mean aside from "the computer" I don't know, I haven't found anyway to see what is using the RAM, I did some searching but it seemed like you couldn't see what program used how much RAM. If I KNEW what the program was I would have done something about it. When I did the search I mostly found how to LOWER the usage of RAM which I think is totally pointless for me.Right click the Taskbar, select "Start Task Manager"

1. Select the Performance tab, look at the lower part where it says Physical Memory (MB) and post or screengrab what you see there.
2. Click the Processes tab, click the column heading "Memory (Private Working Set) so the figures are SORTED with the largest at the top, and see what the topmost entries are.

1.

2. In the Processes tab I got Image Name, CPU and Description I got no memory tab/column.

Edit, I think I found the problem, I removed WUDfhost.exe, I had to use Unlocker for it but sins I restarted the computer it's around 1,6gig RAM. But if keep it in this level for the day I guess I found the problem.WUDfhost.exe usually runs when you connect or use CERTAIN devices, among others, laptop fingerprint readers, PHONES, media/mp3 players, GPS devices, fancy watches, Bluetooth devices, external disks, etc, and the memory (and possibly CPU) hogging is probably down to a badly written driver that came with one of these.
I got it after I installed the catalyst drivers, so right now I'm killing those "new" processes, but for the most part I have to delete the .exe file because I can't disable it on startup, well I probably could enter the registry end remove them there, but I'm not so into the registry editing part.

Solve : Question about new disk partition on dell laptop?

Answer»

sup guys,

i recently made a new disk partition on my laptop so i can store music/pictures... my question is, if i were to do a factory restore on my computer, would i lose all those FILES? or even the new partition itself?Yes. Don't.
Before you do any factory restore, make such you have a suitable backup. Otherwise all your work will be lost.
There are many FREE backup manages that can copy your stuff to an external media.
Or, you can by a portable media device from Se agate or Western Digital that has the software with it.

ok thank you, what if i used the recovery drive? it was hidden but i added a drive letter and it appears nowThe 2nd partition is untouched when doing a factory restore...provided you do it properly. With my Compaq laptop, I have no control over how the factory restore works and it will remove any partitions I have created.  Once the recovery process is started, it gives the user no CHOICE about leaving user-created partitions untouched during the restore process.  This may not be true with other brands but I think I'd assume they work this way and I'd definitely want to backup all my important files before starting a factory restore.i will test it and give an update a little LATER in the DAY Quote from: drivers on December 11, 2011, 12:02:53 PM

i will test it and give an update a little later in the day
How do you "test it" without actually starting the recovery procedure?  My advice is don't test it, backup on all your important files on external media before pulling the trigger that STARTS a factory system restore.  If you don't take this precautionary approach, you may find yourself in a distressing situation.what i ment was that i was gonna save all my stuff to cds, but i also saved it to the partition that i created and then do a factory restore..the result was that doing a factory restore doesnt effect any partitions that you create, so you can use it to store data, factory restore only makes changes to the c drive OK, then your factory restore does not work the same as mine, which is a good thing for you.

How many of you can actually say that you have read and used a "hovering pop up"? And how many can say that it is a total irritation?
I bet Mac does not do hovering pop UPS just Micrsoft. Think of how much energy is used programing them, and for what?
If you mean the ones on websites that have ads in them, they don't care what OS or hardware you use. If you mean the ones in Windows that POPUP information about files etc, then hardly any "energy" went into programming them. They are part of the UI. I often find them useful.

Well I can say with some certainty that the link I gave above works fine in Linux Mint 10, which to my understanding is not "done" by Microsoft. Nor was the Firefox browser within which it was viewed. Pop-ups advertisements have nothing to do With Internet Explorer or any specific Operating System in use.

Actually, when I first read this I thought maybe it was referring to Tooltips, but that would be SILLY, since all major Operating Systems have had a implementation of Tooltips for over 15 years.

Solve : I need to recover a system without a disc. I do not have password?

Answer»

The computer boots up and ask for PASSWORD, which we do not have. Is there a way to recover a system back to factory state?Purchase restore disk from manufacturer or OS disk.

Any computer tech can remove the old password for you, but you do need to prove that you are the legal owner of the PC and not someone who stole it.

A good FRIEND of mine, just got a laptop PC from his son-in-law, that was password protected.  Of course, my friend did not have the password but I knew he was the now legal owner of the PC, so.....
I pulled out my boot CD with the password remover program on it and in less than five minutes I was into the PC.

A password is like a $.95 PADLOCK....only meant to keep the honest person honest.  They can be easily removed.

Good Luck and Happy Holidays!
Many manufacturers (Samsung, LENOVO, Sony, etc, etc.) now commonly include a separate recovery partition on the primary hard drive, which can be used to factory reset.  If you post make and model of computer, you will receive more specific advice.  Often all you need to do is hit a specific key when booting up (e.g. F4) and then follow a WIZARD.

Solve : Keyboard button not working.?

Answer»

One of my buttons is not working on my keyboard as the title says, but there is nothing WRONG with it, instead there something wrong with the win7 account. When I'm at the log in screen or a test/guest account the button works, but when I log in on my "main" account the button just wont work, the button works if I hold it down, but then it is spamming it.

First i thought there might be something wrong with the registry but the button can work if I'm fast enough I can type it after I log in. There is no unknown startup program, and nor in the processes tab, I don't know what services should be on, so haven't check there.

If I boot in safe mode the button works, but if I turn on Selective start up and uncheck Load system services, Load startup items and Use original boot configuration then the button won't work, I think the computer still boot some of them, It reactivate some items that I can't disable.

Anyone with a guess on what it could be? I got a updated virus program and I have scanned my computer, so the possibility on a virus is small, no strange files that I can see, I even cleaned the registry witch CCleaner, tho I know you shouldn't do it, but it was wort a shot.Which button? It's the "Ö" button. That's very... odd.  I'm not sure what the fix might be, but it sounds like a possible registry corruption is involved.  This may not satisfy you as a solution, but how about creating a new user account on the PC and migrating to that?Well... It's would take a while to get all of my configuration to the new account, but if it now might be a registry corruption can't I just take and export the keys where the keyboard is saved on a other account and import to this account? if so do you possible know where the keys are saved? Can I just say that the things that you press on a keyboard are called 'keys', not 'buttons', in English? (That's why it's called a keyboard.)

By all MEANS say that if you must.  They are, however buttons.    (Also, some of those fancy-schmancy buttonboards have extra keys around, that look more like... buttons... than... keys...)

Meanwhile back on topic - I don't see why copying profile items needs to take that long.  With most programs it's just going to be drag-and-drop.  But the real reason for FOLLOWING my suggestion and creating another profile, is to see if this confirms the theory that it's a registry issue.  If it is, you could be on a hiding to nothing SELECTIVELY fixing it - who knows what else might be screwed up?I agree, just create a temporary profile and see if that fixes the issue with your buttonboard, and if so we can be sure it's a profile-specific issue and work from there.

The Test/guest account is a new profile, and I have "tried" to just copy my User profile but it took to long for all of the files and I had trouble to get access to my main folder from the new account so I kinda gave it up quite fast...

So it is a profile-specific issue. What's your region/language set to?  Are you using any macro tools like AutoHotKey?My region is set to my country and it is right keyboard layout, I have Autohotkey installed but I haven't used it sins I got Win7.Uninstall it...and re-boot.Nope, didn't work.Drawing a blank here.  Something's trapping that key code, I think.  I wonder if you change your keyboard layout in Regional Settings, does that key spring back into life?Well then it works just FINE, so I guess it\s something wrong with the region keyboard layout, I will see if Microsoft have a fix for it on their forum.

Solve : Normally fast laptop hits snag. Programs won't open. Firefox crashing. Help!?!?

Answer»

OK. I’m not sure what is wrong with my PC here. I tried everything I know how, so now I’m asking for your help.

Here’s the SPECS for my laptop:

HP Pavilion dv3510nr – Celeron 2 processor w/ 4 GB RAM running on Vista.

So here’s what happened. A few days ago, I noticed my COMPUTER was really running slowly. I found this to be a little STRANGE, as the Celeron 2 and 4 GB of RAM are usually enough for everyday tasks. However, simple things like using Firefox or trying to load iTunes resulted in a “program not responding” every TIME.

For some reason, some of my virus scanners won’t run. Example – I tried running SPYBOT Search and Destroy, but the program won’t run. When I ctrl+alt+dlt to go into processes, it says Spybot is running. (It doesn’t show up under applications, just under processes). Weird.

I was able to run Advanced System Care. It showed no major problems. I tried running House Call (online virus scanner) but Firefox froze up again. Every time, Firefox just freezes up. Firefox (or IE) won’t run for more than a minute or two without the “program not responding” Not sure what’s going on.

I thought that maybe this meant I should run the Windows update. I thought this might be the problem, as it had been popping up for the past few days. So I ran through that update (which was Vista SP2, I believe) Even after the update, everything is buggy.

I re-checked the Windows site to see if there were any more updates (or to see if SP2 didn’t install properly). However, nothing showed up.

So what should I do? Half of all the applications I click on won’t open. Some show that they are open in processes but the application itself is nowhere to be found. I’m not sure how to approach this, since half of the virus scanners I have don’t work anyway.

Also, I’ve tried restarting/shutting down my laptop many times.
Where do I go from here?
Your system is infected. Go to the malware forum on this site and follow the instructions in the announcement at the top of the page.Thanks. will do.

Dell Inspiron 1545, 4 gb ram,  64 BIT system, naturally no windows 7 install disks, it was on the drive , exchanged my clean hdd with ANOTHER hdd, 320gb, same computer, works fine with this hdd.

I have tried to make a recovery disk from the 329gb hdd to USE on the 750gb but there is no windows operating system.  Looked on the Dell support site for a purchase of the install disks but not found.  Is there any solution to complete a reinstall?

I have a Vista operating system install disk and tried to install this to get some partitions.  System installs but no boot only Microsoft sliding bar appears but is moving.   the Vista is only 32bit, i'm sure the 64 bit conflicts.

Any resolution to this problem....I would to use the 750gb hard drive but there is no operating system.

Thanks for the  help.

Let's start with this. EXACTLY what did you do?Using Spotmau 2011 Bootsuite Gold I formatted the entire hard drive.   When the warning indicated the entire hard drive would be wiped clean I failed to understand the Data Safe portion would be too.

Mea Culpa Mea Culpa obupiperb,

Bobtestdisk (on the Parted Magic distribution, amongst others) can find and  recover deleted partitions under certain circumstances.  Might be worth a shot.

Probably could use more detailed information. What exactly transpired before all this?  What were you trying to do?  Did you notice any problems of any kind prior to this? More information. Two things:

1. Check that the DNS settings are correct on any computer that's slow logging on.  Logon times of 5 to 25 minutes can be cause by name resolution problems.  Your PCs should be using your domain controllers for DNS.

2. Use Group Policy to turn off "fast logon optimization".  Counter-intuitive, I KNOW, but we have found you can run into all SORTS of problems when machines try to log on before the network is fully ready.  Does not increase the overall "time to ready", just moves some delay to before the logon prompt is available. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/305293

In both cases, these steps will probably need to be taken by your domain administrator.

Solve : persistent bootmgr missing on win7 ssd install?

Answer»

Hello,

I just received a new M4600 from dell, with no pre-installed OS, and 2 drives:
-drive 0: HDD, 500 GB
-drive 1: SSD mini-card (on mini-pcie-e port), 128 GB
the SSD is set as first boot drive in the BIOS.
I tried installing windows 7 on the SSD. It already had 2 partitions:
-partition 1: 39 MB, 38MB free, "reserved (OEM)"
-partition 2: 2GB, "OS", system partition
the rest of unallocated space.
Before installing anything, when booting the laptop, it said "no OS installed" and that was all.
So first I tried installing the win 7 on the unallocated space. It installed well, but on reboot it couldn't start, the "no os installed" was still there.
I tried fixMBR, fixboot, the automatic win7 DVD boot repair tool, nothing worked or detected any problem.
So I tried to erase the first install (format it), to extend the existing (factory installed) 2GB system partition. Windows wouldn't do it. And all I knew was that it was not NTFS.

It is only when I resorted to formatting this 2GB system partition to NTFS, and merging it with the unallocated space behind it, that when I installed win7 again, I then got on reboot "Bootmgr missing, pres ctrl+alt+del to reboot". And again, nothing could change that, no fixmbr, nothing that I could find in diskpart. Seemed like this SSD would only understand something said in a typically "special-SSDish" language: on that "OS" 2GB partition, there was SSDish language, on a usual windows partition there is not, no matter how I did it. And the disappearing of the 2GB partition was the only thing the ssd could react to...

There are 2 aggraving circumstances: I am trying to install win7 on a SSD, and not only a ssd, but a mini-card SSD, which I know requires special factory settings in order to be recognized as a bootable drive, because it is mounted on a mini-pci-e port, not made to be booted on. These settings were to be factory-made by Dell. And I may have erased some of these settings by formatting the "OS" partition that I could not extend.
Second bad point: my laptop came with an OBSCURE "beware of 512e hard drives" message (without dell beeing able to TELL me wether I did have a 512e drive or not, just "your computer may have a 512e hard drive"), with something about a lot of compatibility issues, the NEED to install special intel drivers (but how can I install them if I have absolutely no OS installed!) and special windows updates. And in France it is 3 in the morning, and even tomorrow I do not know who I may call in Dell to fix this horribly complicated problem. I just can't understand what's going on with the boot sequence on these weird mini-card ssd drives, and without knowing it, why can't my win7 simply boot!

Any help?

Thanks a lot!I am not sure if I get that you have a new laptop with no pre-installed operating system? I don't SEE anywhere here http://www.dell.com/us/enterprise/p/precision-m4600/pd referring to other storage devices. Is there a particular reason you can't install the OS onto the HDD? If possible, you may want to do that, then go through and get everything set up to boot to the SSD, including drivers and fixes and whatever else is needed, verify that it is bootable, then erase the OS off the HDD so you have all of that space availabe again. It is kind of the long way around the block, but if it works, it's better than having a really expensive boat anchor on your desk.
