Solve : Batch Print *.rtf files with Word? |
Answer» Hi, I don't know how to issue a "Click No" command from a command prompt. Is this possible?I don't know. Hopefully, someone else will have an answer. I just did this with a file called document.rtf and Word opened the file, printed it, and quit without asking me if I wanted to save it. Code: [Select]"C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\OFFICE11\WINWORD.EXE" Document.rtf /q /n /mFilePrintDefault /mFileExit Obviously I had to adapt the path to WINWORD.EXE for my system, so the question arises why does Word bring up (I presume) the Save As dialog?. This can happen from the Word Print button if the printer is not configured correctly, so I would check that out. Did you try with the /x switch? Quote from: Salmon Trout on December 13, 2011, 11:51:25 AM I just did this with a file called document.rtf and Word opened the file, printed it, and quit without asking me if I wanted to save it.That Worked for me as well. Hoping the above works, but if not, an AutoIt script would do the trick (it could click on any buttons as needed). http://www.autoitscript.com/site/autoit/Well color me embarrassed...i read rtf to be PDF... Sorry///my bad.You must be poonished. Hi, Thanks for all of the tips. I tried the /x switch. It seemed to work the same way as before. It brings up the same "Saves changes" dialogue box, just like before. I think my rtf file might have something different in it that is causing Word to modify it when I print it. Checking out the print settings seems like a good idea. Unfortunately, I'm such a NEWBIE for things like this that I don't know what I'm looking for. I'll check out AutoIT. Glenn What version of Word are you using? There could be some unseen NUANCES between different Word versions that could be causing this issue. |

Welcome to the CH FORUMS. Unfortunately i cannot VIEW clearly the 2 web sites shown in your post.It does APPEAR that your 1st displayed site is another forum than CH.I cannot determine if the 2nd one is also a different site than CH. It may be that before you can post on a site that you need to "login". You would be able to view the posts but not contribute unless you signed in (you can opt to remain "ALWAYS" signed in on many sites) but unless this is allowed then you would have to sign in each time you visit the site. Solve : Win 7 MAC problems? |
Answer» So I am on a network with port security and I was made aware a little while ago that there was a known issue with Win 7 having a hard wired "spoof" that it did with the MAC address that tripped port security. Well, I let one of the younger techs take the lead on it, and for the better part of a year now, we have had no issues. However we just installed a new Cisco switch to GIVE us some additional capacity, and there were a few different systems that were moved around during the install, but everything was well documented and put back where it came from. Now, however, port security has tripped on a lot of these systems, on my bosses 3 seperate times (which is why I'm now in charge of taking care of this.) CURRENTLY I've disabled port security to allow everyone to work, but that is not a viable permanent solution. My question is, does ANYONE here know how to fix the underlying cause of the issue in that Win 7 likes to send out SPOOFED MAC addresses?Perhaps this will help: http://www.oxid.it/ca_um/topics/configuration.htm |

Solve : loud noise then computer shuts off............?? |
Answer» Hello. Problem: Today morning turned comp on 1st time, LOUD fan(?) noise, got all the way to opening Interent Explorer then just shut down. 2nd try, loud noise, got to Windows startup SCREEN, then just shut down. Comp seemed to always have memory usage spikes up to 70-100%, just with internet Explorer on.Do you really mean memory usage or do you mean CPU usage? Is that with only one tab OPEN in IE? What is your home page? Does your home page use Flash? If you open IE and then wait a minute or LONGER, does the CPU usage eventually drop to a much lower level? Do you have any other browsers installed?Fan speeds don't make any sense at all. Try www.hwinfo.com Download & install hwinfo32 from the "blue bar" at the top. |

Solve : Screen brightness randomly changes (Windows 7)? |
Answer» I installed Windows 7 last week (which has been great except for this one problem) and have had one issue arise. The screen brightness randomly darkens every couple of hours. This never happened when using Vista, so this MUST be some sort of Windows 7 problem. Has anyone else has this issue and does anyone know how to fix it? how I would check it on another monitor without keeping it attached throughout the day.I think, you'll have to put one day aside and do it. That's the only way to find out, if there is something wrong with your laptop's display, or with the laptop itself (video chip). Are you sure it isnt a power setting to dim the display after X amount of time of inactivity? To check, click the little icon of the battery on the taskbar on the bottom of your computer, and click "more power options"(I think this is what it is calld" and see how many minutes it says it will dim/turn off your monitor.Acer sometimes mirrors what Fujitsu does, is there a setting in the BIOS for what screen brightness does? Quote from: iamtonsoffun247 on November 09, 2009, 06:27:30 PM Are you sure it isnt a power setting to dim the display after X amount of time of inactivity? To check, click the little icon of the battery on the taskbar on the bottom of your computer, and click "more power options"(I think this is what it is calld" and see how many minutes it says it will dim/turn off your monitor. I double checked that today and changed it to a LONGER time than before, but the screen still randomly GETS darker. |

Solve : swap vista for xp? |

Answer» i have a dell desk top with windows vista operating system. does microsoft allow me to go to xp without paying for another version? i have a dell desk top with windows vista operating system. does microsoft allow me to go to xp without paying for another version? No Quote from: JJ 3000 on January 01, 2012, 06:16:38 AM No False. Quote from: reddevilggg on January 01, 2012, 06:09:00 AM If you want to go from Vista to XP, you'll have to buy a version XP. Not necessarily. References: http://superuser.com/questions/7479/legally-downgrade-windows-vista-home-oem-license#39252 http://www.microsoft.com/oem/en/licensing/sblicensing/pages/what_to_do_downgrade_rights.aspxThe OEM versions of Windows Vista Business and Windows Vista Ultimate include downgrade rights to: Microsoft Windows XP Professional Microsoft Windows XP Professional x64 Edition Microsoft Windows XP Tablet PC Edition. No downgrade rights are included in other Windows Vista products. If you can't live with Vista, why not buy a Windows 7 upgrade disk rather than go backward to XP? Quote from: soybean on January 01, 2012, 09:11:21 AM If you can't live with Vista, why not buy a Windows 7 upgrade disk rather than go backward to XP? I agree, i've never understood downgrading, Windows 7 is excellent. Some people just prefer XP because it's what they are comfortable with...but i agree as well. Quote from: reddevilggg on January 02, 2012, 06:20:04 AM I agree, i've never understood downgrading, Windows 7 is excellent.Personally, while I can't claim that Win7 is not better than Vista, Because it does make improvements, as one ought to expect from each software iteration, I also think Vista got a lot of ill-deserved flak, mostly as a result of both an initial "It's different, so it sucks" idea and mob-think and RUMOURS. Primarily, I think it's computer manufacturers fault for scraping the bottom of the barrel for system components and passing it off as a usable machine running Vista, when it wasn't. The common thought to many is that Windows 7 is "Windows Vista done right" Aside from a few minor things, I'm hard-pressed to see exactly what is "fixed" in Windows 7 that was "Broken" in Vista. Sure, UAC is less INTRUSIVE now, and they added some whimsical mouse gestures and improved Aero-based features, but none of those were broken in the Vista implementation. If anything was broken in XP, Vista, and 7, it would be the laughable implementation of security on XP; not so much that the system is not securable but rather that so much of the default configuration is designed first for compatibility, and security is something of an afterthought; working with Limited User Accounts is a gigantic pain on XP, so nobody does it, and it's not the default so most people have no idea that their systems are WIDE open, because they are essentially running "as root". Anybody familiar with Unix/Linux knows that, on those systems, running as the root user is not and has never been regarded as a good practice, and as linux slowly gains market penetration, we are going to see more and more malware targeted towards it and that will undoubtedly pick up countless security issues in their implementations, not running applications as a root user helps mitigate the threat of privilege escalation say running a ssh shell as root, if a buffer overflow allows a remote user to execute a shell, they'd have root access to the entire system since that shell would have the same rights as the parent process). In many ways Vista is an example of the "damned if you do, damned if you don't" idea. People(and particularly *nix snobs) had been poking fun at windows default security settings for years. Microsoft started to pay serious attention to security with XP, particularly Service Pack 2, but in many ways all their efforts were almost moot, because many services ran under the "LOCAL SYSTEM" account, which can be equated to the root user. A lot of the flaws and hot-fixes they had to release over XP's service life wouldn't have been the huge deal they were had XP's default security setup been more restrictive. But, at the same time, had they done that, people would have issued the same complaints they did with UAC "It says I don't have permission to copy the file, It's my computer!", and UAC was a fairly streamlined implementation. This brings to the fore the common misconception; with, say, UAC, when UAC is requesting elevation, it's not so much requesting that you elevate your privileges, but it's more along the lines of "hey, this program want's administrator rights, should I give them to it?" It's about the permissions of the application not yourself. Even with Windows Explorer. It's not trying to protect you from yourself, as many claim. That said, I think we can all agree there are inherent flaws in the implementation of UAC, just as their are inherent flaws in the implementation of Graphical sudo; specifically, the fact is, UAC (and gksudo and variants) work by way of a dialog box. So this already presents us with something of an issue, since when it comes to dialog boxes, the first thing people typically think when they appear, is "how do I get rid of this thing". If you are in the middle of Task A (which could be file management, maybe working in word, or excel, or whatever) and suddenly out of nowhere, A Dialog box appears, it doesn't really matter what the content of that dialog box is, the most important thing for you at that time is "e how do I make this go away and go back to Task A?". To those of us who use computers on a daily basis, we might pay a bit more attention to dialog boxes, but the overriding theme is still there- we want them to go away. They are still interruptions, after all. This may sound weird, but UAC in many ways reminds me of the Setup program for Windows 95. When you installed Windows 95 and there was already an existing OS- say, another windows 95 install and you were reinstalling, setup would check to see if the file it was copying already existed, and if it did, it would see if the existing version was newer. If it was, then the setup program would ask the user "do you want to replace this file? the one you have is newer". I imagine this stems from a popular programmer mentality- "Well, I don't know what to do, so I'll ask the user", which seems sensible. But your typical user isn't going to know any more than the software does what to do. All they see in that dialog box is "problem blah blah blah". Users don't like problems. So, your typical user sees that dialog, and they go "uhh... well I guess I'll keep the newer one". few seconds later, they get another one; so they click yes again. Then they get another, and eventually all these prompts start to make them nervous. Why is it asking all these questions? did you answer them wrong? After all, to most users, questions like that only appear when you've done something wrong and the computer us giving you one last chance before something happens that you'll both regret. So they might change their answer, and what you end up with is mixed versions and This dialog, and this type of dialog, reminds me of UAC, because fundamentally, the user doesn't care. They are being asked a question that in the average case they are ill-equipped to answer. How do you know whether to allow the program to elevate? What connotations does elevation have? From a security perspective it's much better, because it provides that "last chance before something horrible happens" if you run a trojan or something, whereas before you could often get infected merely by browsing the web. But it doesn't really provide much of a benefit to the end user, they just want the dialog to go away, and you typically have people simply disabling UAC altogether, which pretty much rolls back the security model to a "run everything as an administrator" unless you take special steps to create Limited User Accounts, but then you have to switch users to install software or run things as an administrator, and your average user doesn't care about the security implications, since if they did, they wouldn't have disabled UAC in the first place. Vista does seem to have ALOT of 'haters' and can never understand why. Each OS is better than the last. Though i agree with BC's statement Quote I think it's computer manufacturers fault for scraping the bottom of the barrel for system components, because i've seen that alot. Anyway, I've heard that XP will be an abandonware in less than three years. Updates ends in 2014. Quote from: maxum on January 02, 2012, 09:36:24 AM Anyway, I've heard that XP will be an abandonware in less than three years."abandonware" doesn't exist as a legal classification of software. It's a term made up by people who pirate the software in order for them to pretend that they aren't. Quote from: maxum on January 02, 2012, 09:36:24 AM Anyway, I've heard that XP will be an abandonware in less than three years.Updates ends in 2014. I don't think any Microsoft product has ever become "abandonware" in the sense of becoming copyright-free, if that is what you meant. Solve : Windows 7 - Extremely slow to shutdown? |
Answer» Hi All, Something else I've found, is that both are horrible about having processes still starting-up minutes after the "desktop is ready for use" . . . could this be an issue with shut-down times if one had just restarted their computer? That's superfetch. It monitors your system and your startup, learning with each boot. It then manages the loading of your processes and apps, prioritizing them so the most important load first. Low priority processes will load last.Go Start>Run (Start Search in Vista), type in: msconfig Click OK (hit Enter in Vista). Click on Startup tab. Click Disable all IMPORTANT! In case of laptop, make sure, you do NOT disable any keyboard, or touchpad entries. Click Services tab. Put checkmark in Hide all Microsoft services Click Disable all. Click OK. Restart computer in Normal Mode. NOTE. If you use different firewall, than Windows firewall, turn Windows firewall on, just for this test, since your regular firewall won't be running. If you use Windows firewall, you're fine. Same problem?Nothing help me what is posted here. my windows 7 still shutting down for ever. i need to switch off MANUALLY. hdd led is on all the time when is shutting down. has someone more ideas what is wrong. thank youhi , i sorted the problem. i mist one of your post 1) Make sure "clear pagefile at shutdown" is not enabled: start - run - regedit [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management] Set ClearPageFileAtShutdown value to 0 that thing help me. thank you so muchI'm glad you got it sorted out. Solve : How do I verify my version of OS from the recovery console shell? |
Answer» Ok. Been working all day to repair my OS. I cannot do a fresh install because I need the data on there. I want to do an in place repair install. So here is the problem. I am an msdn user. I installed some version of Win 7 on my system back in 2009. Not sure which one. My CD rom is not working so I have been USING WintoFlash to create a bootable image on my usb drive. Everytime I go to the repair it says, "This is not COMPATIBLE with this version of Windows. Find a compatible version and try again." So it is Home Premium but there are a lot of different versions. If my system is all up to date then it should be the one with SP1 on it correct?I would think so. Quote think it is x86 but is there a way to tell if it is 64 bit from the command prompt? if a C:\Program Files (x86) folder exists, it is 64-bit. otherwise it is 32-bit. All - Found the version (Win 7 Home Premium 64 bit) and the repair did not work so I went with flash boot of UBUNTU and moved my critical files over and a fresh install of Win 7 Home Premium! Thanks for the help. |

Solve : Laptop shut down issue? |
Answer» I have an ASUS laptop, running Windows 7, and recently I've started having a minor problem closing my laptop. As far as I recall, it started out of NOWHERE. I have my power settings configured so my laptop is supposed to sleep when I close it, but instead it shuts all the way down. When I start it back up again, I get that message telling me there was an UNEXPECTED shutdown. Does anyone know what's up with this?Lately, I have been googling a lot about the sleep functions with Windows 7. And what I have discovered isn't very promising. I have changed various sleep settings to get my computer to "stay" asleep until I wake it up and haven't figured out how yet. It randomly wakes up in the middle of the night and has nothing to do with updates. One post on this forum, person has windows 7 going to sleep and she has it set to never go to sleep. So unless SOMEONE posts who has won this battle I guess we will just hope for the best. Sounds like it is a glitch with WIN 7 sleep functions. One option is to look in your BIOS settings Usually, you must press a key (such as F2, F12, Delete, or Esc) or a key combination immediately after you turn on your computer before Windows starts. For more information, check the information that came with your computer or go to the computer manufacturer's website. When in BIOS change your 'suspend ACPI options'. If it's set to S1 and S3 or just S1 then change it to S3 only. You can also try to change the settings in control panel Control panel - Power options - change when computer sleeps - advanced power settings and set the following options Allow hybrid Sleep > Turn off Allow wake timers > turn on/turn off try both settings USB selective suspend > Turn on let us know how you get on. |

Solve : DEP closes Windows Vista 64? |

Answer» Hi, I need advice. I am running IE9 on Windows VISTA 64 Bit. I have Comcast Xfinity high SPEED internet service. For the past month, Windows routinely stops working and closes and I get the Data Error Prevention notification, message saying it will search for solution and then it reopens the page I had been looking at. This happens repeatedly when I am on the Internet regardless of what site I am at. I never had this problem when I used Comcast Xfinity high speed internet in Georgia but now I am in Florida it is a constant and annoying problem. I would appreciate any suggestions. Thank you. Solve : Should I have a page file with 8GB of RAM?? |
Answer» I'm currently using 8GB RAM on my desktop and I was wondering if I need a page file more than 400MB to allow my PC to run optimally. IG should be more than adequate...System managed. Setting a maximum size just keeps the pagefile from expanding when it needs to.We can argue til the cows come home... If your convinced thats better than OK. Solve : formatting, erasing, or wiping my hard drives? |
Answer» I have an hp pavilion g7-1219wm. It was a good computer. Key word: was. I have been having all kinds of problems lately, too numerous to describe. Plus, I do not know much about computers. I have decided to return this computer for a full refund and just get a new one. I have about a week to do this before I can no longer return it. What I would like to do is totally FORMAT/erase/wipe my hard drives and memory before I turn it in. I googled it and a few sites came up that offer this service for free. What I would like to know from you professionals is what is the best free program to use to do this? Currently, I have CC Cleaner on my computer and have used that to supposedly clean up the problem I was having, but it didn't work. A few weeks ago, I was getting a blue screen. Now today when I went to restore my computer to an earlier time, I got the error: 0x80070005. I think something is really wrong with my computer. It's not just those errors, but I think my secondary email account (not the one I use for this site) may have been compromised. I just want to totally erase everything from here and return it. Please help. Thank you. Please keep in mind that I am a total beginner and require step by step instructions. Peace.Boot to your Windows disc and format.I hate to contradict Allan, but typically an O/S installation disk will not securely erase the contents of a hard drive. Personally, I would run DBAN first: http://www.dban.org/Rob, no problem - but the word "securely" does not appear in the original post. The QUESTION was how to format / erase the drive. And of course as you know, there is NOTHING short of a hammer that will insure the data cannot be recovered. And of course as you know, there is NOTHING short of a hammer that will insure the data cannot be recovered. NAH, I've yet to hear any convincing evidence that a randomised magnetic platter has any sort of recoverable "memory" of old data. There was a report doing the rounds a while ago that some sort of electron microscopy could retrieve it, but that was subsequently debunked. Recoverable memory of old data? All data is still there, it's simply overwritten by newer data. Theres LOTS of software that can dig down and retrieve old data. And law enforcement agencies (especially federal) have software sophisticated enough to retrieve data at virtually any level. Whether or not you've heard of it, it exists. Nah, you can prevent people recovering it, funnily enough using the very method mentioned here: Quote from: Rob Pomeroy on January 04, 2012, 10:29:27 AM Nah, I've yet to hear any convincing evidence that a randomised magnetic platter has any sort of recoverable "memory" of old data. I would think they wouldn't take such measures without having just cause to protect sensitive data.... I'm quite sure they know alot more about computer forensics than the average User... Quote from: patio on January 04, 2012, 11:11:53 AM A DOD wipe (Department of Defense) is 7 passes of a format and zero writes to the entire HDD... The DoD method is based on an out-dated and essentially debunked paper that was based around older recording methods, particularly those used in floppies. Modern Hard Drives work completely differently. Here is a quote from a (sorry for the length, this forum needs "spoiler" tags or something equivalent) paper on the subject. Quote The basis of this belief is a presupposition is that when a one (1) is written to disk the actual effect is closer to obtaining a 0.95 when a zero (0) is overwritten with one(1), and a 1.05 when one (1) is overwritten with one (1). Ths is false and in fact, there is a distribution based on the density plots that supports the contention that the differential in write patterns is too great to allow for the recovery of overwritten data. The argument arises from the statement that "each track contains an image of everything ever written to it, but that the contribution from each "layer" gets progressively smaller the further back it was made". This is a misunderstanding of the physics of drive functions and magneto-resonance. There is in fact no time component and the image is not layered. It is rather a density plot. This is of prime importance to forensic analysts and security personel. The time needed to run a single wipe of a hard drive is economically expensive. The requirements to have up to 35 wipes [12] of a hard drive before disposal become all the more costly when considering large organisations with tens of thousands of hosts. With a single wipe process taking up to a day to run per host through software and around an hour with dedicated EQUIPMENT, the use of multiple wipes has created a situation where many organisations ignore the issue all together – resulting in data leaks and loss. Basically, a single pass is enough. Though I firmly hold that if you need to securely delete anything you're either paranoid or a criminal, or an LY (Linux Youth). Possibly both. Why? Well, for one thing- the person who cares the most about your data is you. Not some random person out there in the wild. Nobody grabs used hard drives and goes "I think I'll use a recovery tool to try to reconstruct the data that used to be on this drive for my EVIL SCHEMES.". the second case speaks for itself, if your computer has illegal material on it, you're going to be paranoid that some random person rebuilding your data will find that illegal content and report you! The answer to this is to, well, not put the illegal content there to begin with. (pirated software btw is a common thing I see people cite "well I copied XYZ and I don't want to be reported". That's stupid. Nobody would waste their time to rebuild a disk structure just to find if the person before them used pirated software, and it's not really that easy to tell if they did anyway. That, and it's not strictly illegal depending on the actual action taken. The third one comprises those bushy-tailed youngsters who, as leet haxxors, want to protect their stupid xchat scripts from being stolen, because MicroShaft is out to steal their ideas. So they of course will use a fully encrypted disk to store their data, under the false impression that they couldn't just have the password beaten out of them if they wanted it. But nobody does, they just delude themselves. And usually, at least in my experience, encrypting your stuff just makes it harder for you to access. In the Original Poster's case, I don't think it's important to wipe the drive at all, especially since it's purpose is to keep unscrupulous people from private data, since unscrupulous people Already have that data. (and nobody would bother to rebuild a disk structure to find that data anyway). Quote from: BC_Programmer on January 04, 2012, 12:06:29 PM Though I firmly hold that if you need to securely delete anything you're either paranoid or a criminal, or an LY (Linux Youth). Possibly both. Or a company trying to make sure info is removed securely to stop criminals stealing sensitive employee information. Or actually quite a few very genuine and legal reasons to be worried.Ask any law enforcement technologist if you're right. You're not.No matter the length...nor the technical jargon used in the lengthy quote i know it can be done...and has been done for all of computing time... To think otherwise is foolish. |

Solve : 'Finding' USB Drives Plugged into a Hub? |
Answer» Win 7, both 32 and 64 bit machines. Is there a good alternative? That is, higher priced=better quality?I agree with rthompson80819, I've seen many USB multiport HUBS breakdown (whatever the price) I think if you want to use these things to save wires or other ports on your computer, you should just use them for Keyboard; MOUSE and those types of low powered things. The amount of power required for multiple hard drives plus the fact that they really should be using their own USB port (ideally in the back of your computer), leans me against a USB hub altogether. And here I thought I was being clever. (And, yeah, the whole point is to have external drives, not internal)You can still have external (USB) drives, plugged into the back of your computer, not a hub. It's a problem with the hub. I have three USB hubs. I filled each one with USB thumb drives and plugged them in. They all DETECTED every drive within about 15 seconds. The one with 6 ports gave me the "USB Hub Power Exceeded" message when I tried to do that without being powered, though, which makes sense. Is the OP talking about thumb drives? Not if one is 2TB...i'd say no.Good point. Therefore I say don't use a USB hub for this. Quote from: kimsland on November 30, 2011, 09:41:26 AM Is the OP talking about thumb drives?Doesn't really matter. Thumb drives will draw more from the USB port than an external drive, by virtue of requiring that power, while External drives are just STANDARD Hard drives in an enclosure, which require far more than 500mA of power and that is why they have their own power adapters. Plugging most enclosures/external drives in without them being powered on results in nothing. unpowered USB hubs, I would agree. More trouble than they are worth. But when talking about a powered hub, if there are issues with the devices being detected it's an issue with the hub, not the computer or some intrinsic indescribable mystery about USB hubs. Your first reply still holds true. It is a problem with the product, not how it is being used.So - bottom line: It should take as long for the drive to appear when plugged into the hub as when plugged directly into the machine, +- 1 second or so? Quote from: rjbinney on November 30, 2011, 01:04:32 PM So - bottom line: It should take as long for the drive to appear when plugged into the hub as when plugged directly into the machine, +- 1 second or so? well, cumulatively. If you have say 5 drives plugged in, and plug in the hub, usually the Computer will find them one after the other, rather than "all at once". |

Solve : Computer Owner Issue? |
Answer» Hello all. Is it possible to have it re-install MS Word without the keys and the disks, without getting some hacked version? I don't do the hacked thing, so please don't post links to them.It depends. You can try going to add/remove and use the "change" option for Word, which should allow you to repair the installation. If it doesn't work(that is, requires a disk or something) you should be able to cancel out of it with no ill effects. I do not understand why you edited the registry to edit the user name. Can't that be changed in the add/change user in control panel? I believe Word gets the name from the account user not the windows registration. The obvious solution to me would be to create a new user (making sure it has administrator rights). And then delete the old user account. This would be beneficial in many ways. It wont uninstall any programs though I' believe it will delete the My Documents folder as well as anything on the Desktop for that user ect... I would first create a new user account and MOVE any important files just in case. |

Solve : Compact Flash Manufacturers? |
Answer» Hi, I need to be able to establish without any doubt the manufacturer of compact flash cards to avoid purchasing fakes. A lot fakes can be established just by looking at the labels, however, some are getting rather good and I understand that the TRUE manufacturer is stated in the root directory. How do I read this in win 7? Thanks for any help Quote I understand that the true manufacturer is stated in the root directory. Source ? ?Even if it was true, which it isn't, why wouldn't the maker of a fake flash card put the ID of a genuine manufacturer there? And how do you check the "root directory" of an unformatted card? Thanks to you both. My source was simply that was what somebody told me. I don't understand how these things work but I really do need to try and find this information as I've sold cards that I thought were genuine only to be told they weren't and the manufacturer was so and so and not the one on the labels. There is no substitute for LEARNING what you need to know, by doing the necessary research. If you are reselling flash memory devices, you should definitely be doing the necessary diligence. There are many web sites with tips on how to spot fakes, and how to TEST devices. One program that gets mentioned a lot is h2testw Thanks, I use H2TestW and it is extremely good at rooting out certain types of fakes. Anything over 2GB will fall over under it's system if it's a fake. Unfortunately, anything below 2GB will pass muster and as the fakes often have a reasonable to good read/write speed H2TestW reports these speeds and it doesn't make you think you've got a fake. I can tell most of them on sight, but they are getting better, hence my difficulty. Then don't SELL any under 2G's... The other thing to consider if you are going to be a re-seller is to research your sources and find out what exactly your providers are selling you... Other than that i can't suggest anything else... If i were going into business doing this that's the approach i would take... Quote from: patio on February 18, 2012, 01:30:48 PM Then don't sell any under 2G's... Yes Quote if you are going to be a re-seller ... research your sources and find out what exactly your providers are selling you... Yes again. Making MONEY out of people who trust you brings moral reponsibilities and also, more importantly, legal ones. Quote If i were going into business doing this that's the approach i would take... Three times yes! Anyhow, I always buy my flash memory from Staples, not some guy on the web that I never heard of, for reasons which should (by now) be obvious. |
