Solve : Nothing happens when I try to click on certain links?

Answer»

So no matter what browser I am using (IE, Chrome, Firefox) I can't click on certain links on certain websites. Normally I can browse the internet just fine clicking on whatever I want. My computer recently started doing this but I'm not sure exactly when, and if anything was downloaded onto my computer (I don't really download anything, so I'm not sure if that is RELATED). Anyway, I first discovered it when I tried to click on a page number on a website and nothing happened. My CURSOR turns into a pointing finger, but absolutely nothing happens when I try to click certain links. This is maddening and frustrating, and I haven't been able to figure out any solution. I tried uninstalling Java and re-installing it. I've tried clearing my cache and COOKIES and all that. I know that it's not a pop up blocker, because ctrl-clicking doesn't do anything either. It's as if my computer doesn't even recognize that some links work? I dont know, I'm pretty hopeless when it comes to knowing the technical stuff about computers. Please HELP me!I believe this will answer your question: http://bloodycomputer.blogspot.com/2008/01/keyboard-shortcut-of-week-so-what-is.html.  It does the same thing as right clicking your MOUSE; it brings up the same menu. It's not right clicking that's the problem. It's just the left click

Solve : Netbook and windows 7 ultimate?

Answer»

Hello
i installed windows ultimate and an Asus EEE pc 1001pxd. The netbook has one 1gb of memory installed but as i finished installation it initially took about ten mins to boot. After a few days it will not boot anymore. it shows the windows boot choices and i used "start windows normal". But after several mins it gives me options
1. Restore
2. startup repair
3.memory diagnostic
4. Command prompt (i am just summarizing the names of the 4 choices that it gave me)
i chose startup repair but after almost an hour it can't boot. What OS did the netbook originally ship with? To get your netbook working first you may want to FOLLOW these instructions to access your Recovery Partition to get it working again:
http://support.asus.com/Troubleshooting/detail.aspx?SLanguage=en&p=20&m=Eee%20PC%201001PX&s=1&hashedid=wxAfn..&os=29&no=1718

If you want to stress-test your system to check for hardware errors you might want to USE the following programs:
IntelBurnTest for your CPU: http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/Benchmarks/IntelBurnTest.shtml RUN it on Standard, 1024MB, for 10 passes. If your system gets unstable in the process it will tell you.
MemTest86+ for your RAM: http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/Benchmarks/Memtest86-plus.shtml Run it for 10 passes. It will INDICATE if there is a read/write error if your RAM is faulty.

Can you use clear and precise sentences, maybe even full words, it would help when read it. Not only do you want help, we have to 'work out' your text speak.  1) What is new or different since the last time everything worked properly (ie, new HW, new sw, virus, error, etc)?

2) When the cpu spikes, which process does TASK manager show is using the cycles?Remove one of your AV programs for starters (see your AV thread).yup removed the mse......performance is better....but the program launching times still too long
Your not giving enough information for us to work with.

Are ALL programs taking a while to open, if i open 'Netbeans' it takes longer to open than 'CCleaner' !!

How long is long?  20 SECONDS? 5 minutes?

Please provide as much detail, explained clearly, it will help us both in the long run.

Thanksok....
jst as in my case approx timings are

nokia suit upto 20 sec
DAP9.6 18 sec
vlc 20 sec
windows media player 12 sec
advance system care 15 sec
malware fighter 20 sec
game booster3 14 sec
protected folder 22 sec
and like this....

nd even windows taking 2 to 4 minutes to load nd shutting down...even in case of no updates too.

i think its suffice information for u sir... Quote from: Rob Pomeroy on December 28, 2011, 01:10:55 PM

Solve : Cannot Log Into Laptop (VISTA)?

Answer»

Hello,

First post here - and it's actually for a friend.  Hopefully this is the right section, (and not viruses )

My friend has a Toshiba running MS Vista Home Premium and receives the following MESSAGE when trying to log in:
Quote

The User Profile Service failed the logon. User profile cannot be loaded

I booted it up today in hopes of accessing the Administrator account via Safe MODE, but when booting to safe mode, her account is the only one that appears. She previously took the machine to Best Buy and after looking at it for two minutes, said it was a new virus and they could fix it for $200+

Does anyone have any advice on how to access the PC as an admin to even find out if it's a virus or just Vista being Vista?  She does have the BACKUP CD shipped with the laptop, (not sure if it's just a restore or recovery, etc).

Any help would be greatly appreciated!Go to microsofts website and use their FIXIT program this maybe able to resolve itUnfortunately, the laptop with the issue cannot access anything (ie Windows).  I was able to use the Recovery CD to pull up a CMD prompt and tried enabling the Admin using the CMD lines, but it never seems to appear. This never works.Just an update: I'm able to get into the regedit program via command prompt, but am not sure if I should be looking to create a new user via the program or make changes to an existing user, (ie her name or Administrator in an effort to get it to SHOW up in Safe Mode).Take a look here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947215

Solve : Alt Gr + * and STO client crash = Wndows error??

Answer»

Hi!

A few days ago, my keyboard got disconnected to my pc while it was turned on.
The keyboard was reconnected, but just didn't work.
When I restarted the PC my keyboard once again WORKED, with ONE exeption: All characters appearing through typing Alt Gr + 2 and so on are still unavailible.
My system is a triple BOOT one, and when I boot into Linux my keyboard work just fine.

A few days ago I was going to play Star Trek Online, but as soon as I'd typed in my password and username and pressed "Submit", the client crashed.
I thought this was a internal GAME error and posted a support ticket. The support team couldn't give me an answer.
Today I ran that same install of STO under wine in linux and everything went great. (Ignoring the fact that the patch BUTTON won't work later on.  )

It suddenly crossed my mind that this might not be a coincidense, but that it could actually be a windows error.
Could someone please help me to solve the keyboard error, and maybe that'll solve my STO client prob.

Of course if you know what this is all about, please post that answer

Thx!

Worth saying: Eclipse and the android SDK got installed around that period of time.Forgot to say OS. This problem is windows vista.

Solve : How to turn off user account control in Windows 7??

Answer»

This is on a new laptop I bought to use programming car computers. It will never be USED on the internet or a network. No antivirus/firewall needs to be installed. I remember doing this temporarily on my PC running Vista a few YEARS ago but I don't remember how I did it. Is the proceedure the same in Windows 7?
Thanks for any help!
MikeAbout doing this previously, I MAY be thinking of turning on net user administrator via command prompt. I researched my post history and found out how to do that. Works the same for Windows 7 as it does for Vista (although I won't post the proceedure for the novice users sake).
But the instructions included with my programming software list "Turn Off User Account Control". I must do this in order to run the '.exe' installation files for my software.

That ought to do it. If you're running as admin then you won't get any uac prompts. You will have unrestricted access to everything.

See here if you still want to turn uac off:

Really? You can't just RIGHT click and run as administrator?
Here's a convenient little app. Rather than disable UAC, just run it in quiet mode: http://www.tweak-uac.com/home/ Quote from: JJ 3000 on January 13, 2012, 03:06:20 AM

Solve : restore point in windows 7?

Answer»

How can i manually restore my windows 7 to an earlier TIME if the system did not create any restore point to roll BACK my actions. It looks like manual restore points can only be create for the present time? You can't. The BEST you can do is take your back to "system shipped" status if it has a recovery partition or disc.

This is why I strongly recommend that EVERYONE should use disc imaging software. Systems restore is great - when it works. Disc Images always WORK.

Solve : Not allowed to copy admin profile to standard, right??

Answer»

For Vista.  As up to now I have used one PROFILE to do everything and want to start using a standard profile to browse the web.  When in user profiles I cannot select the profile I want to copy-the copy box is faded and cannot be selected.  So, I CREATED another administrator profile because I read you cannot copy the profile you are using.  When logged into an administrator ACCOUNT, and this is not the one I want to copy, and I select the account in user profile the copy box is still faded.  The two new profiles I have just created both, both standard and admin, the copy to box can be selected for both.  But, still not the one I have always been using that I want to copy.Did you already see any of these?

http://familyinternet.about.com/od/projects/ss/adduservista.htmI'm OK with creating profiles but want to copy one.  The one I want to copy is what I use all the time and have always used but when I try and copy it the "delete" and "copy" boxes are faded.  I'm THINKING I can just FIND the favorites folder and just copy that to the new profile and just set it up the way I like it.

Solve : Windows boot problem. NTLDR is missing.?

Answer»

Last night I used Acronis True Image Home 2012. What I did I wanted to clone my HDD. So I set PROGRAM to run and went to bed. This MORNING when I woke up I noticed some error on the screen:  NTLDR is missing. Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart. So I did a restart one time, second time and again and still same error. Then I tried to start up Windows thru my bootable flash drive with Win7 installation disk (DVD drive is broken on this computer, can't open it up). That still didn't solve the problem.

Googling for my problem I read somewhere that one of some steps to resolve this issue is to disable QUICK Boot Option in BIOS. I can't see such option in BIOS of my computer. Really.

Just very lately I notice that I'm not even able to boot from my flash drive >:(YES, I checked in BIOS that settings are correct to boot from flash drive). Like I MENTION above, I was able to boot flash drive in the morning, now - not even that. Instead of that I get Windows Boot Manager info. Among other things it says there:
File: \Boot\BCD
Status: 0xc0000098
Info: The Windows Boot Configuration Data file does not contain a valid OS entry.

Moreover, I read on some sites that an error "NTLDR is missing" doesn't apply to Win7. Like this error can't happen in Win7. What's the heck ? I'm using Win7 on this computer
I'm pretty frustrated with this problem.

Some piece of advice, please

EDIT: I'd like also to add that no any external hard drive, flash drive, floppy disk or CD/DVD has been inserted since I notice the problem. Only one OS has been used on this computer (Win7).
EDIT2: All this problem concerns my second computer.
HP Slimline
Win7 Ultimate 64bit

Solve : Windows 64bit Restarts - no warning/errors?

Answer»

I had my computer built several months ago and it has worked amazingly well until recently. It has started to randomly restart without warning. It does not freeze or turn off completely - just restarts. I get no blue screen nor error messages. I only get the black screen that tells me windows was not shut down properly and the option to start normally or in Safe Mode. If I tell it to run normally, it will boot up again just fine. Sometimes when it restarts though, it will loop. It will try and boot windows and fail and want to do a repair. I will allow it to do a repair and it will then boot windows once its finished. It has looped indefinitely before and I've had to reinstall windows. I reinstalled windows two days ago and its still restarting, but always manages to reboot or repair and reboot.
I have noticed it to restart when I play games (Star Wars: The Old Republic) and it has restarted twice when I alt tabbed and windowed the game to look up something online. However, it has also restarted on me while I was watching a DVD and while I was just surfing the internet without any other programs running.
I have run eventviewer and only found kernel-power error with bugcheckCodes as 0s. I have also run MEMTEST and my RAM seemed to pass. I've also noticed my speakers make a short static sound when I turn on my computer (like someone brushing over a mircophone). My sound also seems a little off sometimes when I play video games. We recently installed a new dvd drive Blu-ray/dvd burner. The sound issue is a bit more new and do not know if the two symptoms are from the same issue. I've checked my drivers but see no explanation marks and drivers seem to be up to date. This is driving me crazy as well as my much more tech-savvy friends. I will be running more tests, but until then.. help!!

Edit: I've also watched my temperatures and even while running the game, nothing went above 51 Celsius. It has restarted on me while looking for a solution online and nothing was higher than 41 Celsius! Sometimes it reboots after several hours of use, other times it will reboot after only being on for a few minutes.

My specs:

Windows 7 64-bit
AMD Phenom II X4 965 Processor 3.68 GHZ
8 GB RAM (Corsair brand)
AMD Radeon HD 6950 Graphics card
Sabertooth 990FX Motherboard
600-Watt Power Supply (Corsair)
2 TB Hard Drive

And um I dont know what else you'd need. so PLEASE ask lol. I greatly appreciate any input!!I THOUGHT the stock speed for the 965 was 3.4 GHz., so that means you are running an overclocked CPU. (Did you know this?) Have you tried running the CPU at its stock speed and voltage settings? Sure sounds like some kind of CPU / RAM instability issues. When you overclock, you are going outside your hardware specifications and you can run into all kinds of issues to do with e.g. CPU & RAM voltages and RAM type, timings etc. You might get more focussed and savvy help on one of the AMD overclockers forums. I see you had this system built for you. Have you tried asking the person who built it for advice? Have you done the obvious things like making sure the RAM is seated?
I never noticed that before, but you are right. I still have the original box and it says it is a 3.40 GHz, but if I look it up on my computer it says it is a 3.68 GHz

Edit: No I was not aware that it was overclocked nor did I ask anyone to overclock it for me or do I remember anyone telling me they overclocked it. I will have to ask them and find out. Quote from: Restart on January 22, 2012, 02:47:03 AM

I still have the original box and it says it is a 3.40 GHz, but if I look it up on my computer it says it is a 3.68 GHz

Then I expect it's been overclocked. Standard clock is 3.40 GHz but it looks like somebody has gone into the BIOS and tweaked the speed up by an extra 0.28 GHz. This can give a slight performance boost but may lead to instability. This is one possible cause of your issues. If you are not a hardware savvy person I suggest you try to speak to the builder. Or could somebody else have recently tweaked it up, thinking they were "helping" you? (round about just before the trouble started?)

Has anybody, other than yourself, had unsupervised access to the computer, who could be described as a "gamer teen" type of person? My much more tech-savvy friend came over and messed with my BIOS when I first got the computer. As far I knew, he was simply looking at them because he was curious of how they looked on his motherboard. It is possible he overclocked it then. He has also came over to try and fix my computer when it crashed before, but never mentioned an overclocking. I will ask him when I see him next and I hope that will fix it!You may wish to review the motherboard documentation, and consider using the "optimized default" BIOS settings. of course, we may be barking up the wrong tree, you may have some other kind of hardware issue, but personally I would get it back to standard settings and see if it ran OK for a while. A Phenom 965 on the standard 3.40 GHz clock is still going to be a good performer.

I will give it a shot and see how it goes. I'll probably try tomorrow after work since ive spent too much time on this thing already! The IRONY is I had this computer built because my 5yr old factory quadcore started doing the restart thing until it finally refused to start again (now that I know more i think i just killed the power supply lol). To have this computer doing nearly the same thing is making me wanna cry! I'll keep you posted on how things are going and I greatly appreciate the help!I spoke to the person who probably overclocked my BIOS and he says he did it a few days ago - which is not reassuring since my computer has been doing this restart thing for several weeks. Going to give it a try later tonight though.

Solve : computer won't create restore point. hp computer running Vista Ultimate?

Answer»

Hi everyone,
when I try to create a restore point. my computer says that it could not create one. it has also been freezing frequently for the past few weeks and sometimes also says that windows outlook is not responding and 'the programme will be closed'. Which it then does and sometimes it will work fine if I restart it and sometimes it doesn't and then I have to shut down the computer and start it again before  it will work. do you think this is a soft ware or a hardware problem? It has me really confused. Thanks for any help that you cah give me.
Wishing you all a Happy and prosperous New Year.
regards,
barb it may be a software one. check for infections and otherwise repair using recovery console with boot cdDoes the computer tell you anything else when it FAILS to create the restore point? It should give you a reason for the failed restore.

Things to do before you try to create a restore point:

MAKE sure that System Restore is enabled on the drives where you want System Restore enabled.
Make sure that you have sufficient disk space on all the drives where System Restore is enabled.
Try create a System Restore point manually and make a note of the Error MESSAGE you get. If you don't get one, check if one has been      created or not.

You can try:

    Open up the Start Menu
    Right-click on Computer
    select Properties
Click on the Advanced system settings
    Select the System Protection tab
In System Restore section click Create button
Give the name if you want and click Create

That should create a restore point.

If your still having ISSUES:

Type eventvwr.msc /s in Start Menu Search Box & hit Enter to open the Event Viewer. Double-click on Applications & Services Logs and see if you are able to evaluate the event description or the CAUSE of problem.

AND/OR

Type Services in Start Menu Search Box, hit Enter. Make sure that the Volume Shadow Copy Service is Running and set on Automatic. If the Status of System Restore Service is not Started, Start it. Also set it on Automatic if it is not. A reboot may be required. Reconfirm again, and now try.

Reply with what you get.

Hope that helps.

thankyou I will give it a try and get back to you.
thanks,
Barb

Solve : Windows 7 advice?

Answer»

I have been looking at versions of windows 7 on ebay and have a few questions.
1) An OEM version on ebay said it is not as easy to install as a retail version and requires someone with more than average computer knowledge to install.  What does this mean?
2)  I've been wanting to upgrade to a 64 bit OS.  Would I still be able to run 32 bit programs with windows 7-64?
3) What are the known problems so far with installing and operating windows 7?
4)  I usually wait at least a year after an OS comes out to buy one.  Would that be wise concerning windows 7? Quote

Nonsense.

Most applications will work. From what I've seen, it's the smaller, less developed apps that don't work.

Not necessary. Any reason for waiting a year?I've been running windows 7 for about a year now and it is a good os.  Just have a few problems with permissions now and then. You might wanna check this links : http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/products/features/user-account-control

1) An OEM version on ebay said it is not as easy to install as a retail version and requires someone with more than average computer knowledge to install.  What does this mean?

Installing an "OEM" version of Windows can be tricky for a number of reasons because OEM licensing is where the disk is tied to a specific make and model of PC, and legally can only be sold with one computer and installed only on that computer (ever). So buying an OEM disk (only) on Ebay may not get you a legal Windows 7 license. You may find the OEM product key supplied is blocked by Microsoft because of multiple use. Read the Ebay advice page about buying Microsoft products. The "more than average computer knowledge" may mean "knowing how to crack or bypass Windows GENUINE ADVANTAGE", which is (a) illegal (b) not supported in this forum in any way, shape or form, (C) liable to render the OS inoperative when a Microsoft update patches out the crack you had to make.

2)  I've been wanting to upgrade to a 64 bit OS.  Would I still be able to run 32 bit programs with windows 7-64?

In general, yes.

Quote
3) What are the known problems so far with installing and operating windows 7?

One that I can think of is with older hardware or peripherals that have not had drivers written for W7, especially 64-bit.

Quote
4)  I usually wait at least a year after an OS comes out to buy one.  Would that be wise concerning windows 7?

Even if it was "wise" to wait a year, the Windows 7 retail release was in October 2009 which is over 2 years ago. I bought a new MACHINE in January 2010 and specified Windows 7 Professional 64 bit. It has run absolutely fine in all that time.

1. When they wrap a pretty plastic box around an OEM disc, they call it retail.
Don't buy any "upgrade" kits, those are the difficult ones to install.

2. Yes

3. PEBKAC mostly.

4. Meh. You either need Windows 7 or you don't. After 2014, you will need it.

Solve : GNU Unifont not installing?

Answer»

Well, ONE of my friends has Windows 7, and was recently trying to install GNU Unifont, but to no avail. ( http://unifoundry.com/unifont.html )

I  decided to help, so I have them upload the file to my Linux box,

Code: [Select]$ file uni/unifont-5.1.20080907.ttf
uni/unifont-5.1.20080907.ttf: TrueType font data

Then I download it to this XP box, check it in the font viewer, try installing it, it doesn't install here either.
The MD5 of the file is 01a808b76cc0f50e065bc5ddce539d5d

Anything to try? (XP is not concerned with the font right now, FOCUS should be Windows 7)

What I'm told they tried:
* Copy/paste into font folder
* Manual addition of registry keys
* Logout/Login

What is INTERESTING is that they said they renamed some fonts (I don't KNOW if the renaming was as in the filename or internal name), and Windows didn't seem to notice.

Solve : Can't Open wps. Files Written in Windows XP Moved to Windows 7?

Answer»

I moved files from an old computer with Windows XP to a new computer with Windows 7 and I can't open those ENDING in “wps.” When I try to open them the Adobe Reader X page opens and shows a window saying:

“Adobe Reader could not open 'file name.wps' because it is either not a supported file type or because the file has been damaged” etc.

The computer, a Dell XPS 8300 has Microsoft Word Starter preloaded on it but no purchased Word programs. Is there a way I can open these files? I am a complete novice.

This is a 'word works' file. If you have 'word' on the win7 computer you can probably open it by downloading the works converter... looking for link...

You can use Word to open a Works document file (.wps), even if the file has not been converted to Word format (.doc) beforehand, by using the Works 6-9 Converter. FOLLOW these steps to open the Works document by using the Works 6-9 Converter:

    Start Word.

In Word 2000, Word 2002 or Word 2003, click the File menu, and then click Open. In Word 2007 or Word 2010, click Microsoft Office Button, and then click Open.

In the Open DIALOG box, follow these steps:

Change the Look in box to the location of your Works document.

In the Files of type box, click All Files (*.*).

Select the Works document (.wps) that you want to open, and then click Open.

If the document opens correctly, click File, click Save As, and then change the file type to a Microsoft Word document (.doc).
Save the document and you have SUCCESSFULLY converted the file to a Word document.

Thank you. That was very helpful.

if you are talking about the online service than you don't "Uninstall" it since it doesn't get installed in the first place, it's just a website. If you want to stop using it, just stop using it.BC_Programmer -

BC_Programmer -
I checked the add/remove and did not find it so I suppose I never had hot mail.
Well, if you think you had Hotmail, then we have no reason to doubt that you had it.  But, clearly, you're still not understanding that Hotmail would never appear in the Add/Remove Programs (Programs and Features in Windows 7) because it's not a program.  As BC_Programmer, it's just a website.  Websites are not installed on your computer, they are just viewed by you using your web browser. Soybean
Thanks for your explanation.  I went to the page that had my Windows Live account.  At the bottom of the page was a place to click on that would delete Windows Live which also got rid of Hotmail.  I never saw it before but it solved my problem.
One more question if I may.  Is Windows Live just a website?  It seemed that when I gave an address and a password I had Windows Live and then I could use Hotmail.  None of this ever appeared on my desk top, I had to use search to find them.
Thanks for your time.      Bob

On my home page there is a "web search" which is what I used.

Thank you for the link.

Solve : slow file copy many files?

Answer»

Slow file COPY when there are many files from revo drive to usb 3 drives (several usb 3 flash drives brand new). Why? I recieve about 5MB per second when copying 13,000 files to the drive all different size files and the total size transfered is about 7GB. Why do I get 5MB per second?

I get 180MB/sec average from revo to SSD (same files)
I also get 50MB/sec from revo to USB3 Hard drive (not flash drive) (same files)
LASTLY I get 30-50MB/sec from same flash drives when copying a smaller amount of files.
Is it something to do with FAT32 file system on a flash drive with many files?

[year+ old attachment deleted by admin]try the Tera Copy software and see if it does any better for you.nope still 5MB/sec...aroundI think 5MBps is pretty average for a USB stick. Don't expect anything faster unless you bought a high-end model. It is a high end model. it says its read is 54MB/SEC
It says its Write is 20MB/sec

My ACTUAL write is 5MB/sec with that amount of files. My actual write SPEED with one big file is about 40MB/sec the highest.

Why does the speed lower if I have many files? Quote

It says its Write is 20MB/sec

That speed is a theoretical maximum, and probably measured using one large file. Flash memory write speeds will be slower for many small files. The reason is that although flash memory can be read or programmed a byte or a word at a time in a RANDOM access fashion, it can only be erased a "block" at a time. This generally sets all bits in the block to 1. Starting with a freshly erased block, any location within that block can be programmed. However, once a bit has been set to 0, only by erasing the entire block can it be changed back to 1. In other words, flash memory (specifically NOR flash) offers random-access read and programming operations, but cannot offer arbitrary random-access rewrite or erase operations. Transferring multiple small files, especially if many are smaller than the chip-specific block size, could lead to a much lower rate than the maximum rate measured using large files, as you have noticed.

I certainly don't want to START recommending possible solutions that have already failed for your particular problem. It would be a waste of everyone's time. Also, can you tell us if you made any changes to your computer right before this started? Did you install any new programs or download anything, make any changes to the settings at all?Well, I have tried to make user accounts "basic" while I'm on the hidden administration account so basically my windows anytime upgrade disc won't work.  I've also tried deleting registry keys, unlocking hidden administration account, and making new account from control panel but it seems like I cannot get into the control panel as when i click on manage other accounts it does nothing. I tried to format by pressing alt + f11 on start up (i have ac er) but all it says is I get some error CALLED "error 4" but then it says the program will SHUT down this has been happening multiple times.

Solve : Windows Vista - Desktop Computer Freeze (No BSoD)?

Answer»

Well, my desktop computer has been freezing quite often as of late, and I have yet to see the blue screen of death, or any error messages... I searched AROUND the forum but couldn't really find a problem too similar to mine... My general computer knowledge is average at best, so headaches may ensue!

My computer started freezing up about a week ago and other than that it's been fine... I suspect there is a hardware issue, mostly because I've used this computer for about 5 years now, and there have been times I've left it on for over a week...

The screen will randomly freeze, all keyboard and mouse control is lost, and any sound that played at the time of the freeze is repeated like a broken record... I have to hold the power button down until it turns off, then I have to choose whether or not I want to run it in safe mode when I turn it back on... I have not chosen safe mode yet, and I find no error messages or anything like that...

I use Microsoft Security Essentials for protecting my computer, so I updated it and then did a quick scan not long ago... The scan didn't find any problems, and when I attempted a full scan of my computer it froze before the scan could finish... I don't recall visiting any suspicious websites or doing something that might infect my computer when it started freezing, but who knows...

I have also checked Device MANAGER for any red X's or yellow ! signs, and have found no red X's and only one yellow sign... The ! sign is a network adapter and the device status is: "This device cannot start. (Code 10)" I doubt that has anything to do with my problem...

The freezing seems to happen more often when I'm running many programs at once, especially games... I have however had it freeze while LEAVING it on with no windows open... The computer is usually quiet with a humming sound, so I assume at least one fan is working fine... I recently cleaned up the outer parts of the computer with a paper towel to remove all of the dust, which I probably don't do often enough...

I should also mention that I personally opened up my computer to install more RAM a few months ago, and everything seemed to work fine... I visited www.crucial.com to scan my computer for the right choice of RAM to buy, then bought it from the same website...

That about sums it up, I'm willing to try just about anything with my computer to solve this problem, so any and all help is appreciated!

Here is some of my computer information:

Windows Vista Home Premium
Service Pack 2
Dell - Inspiron 530
Intel Core 2 Duo CPU E4400 2.00GHz
3GB of RAM
32-bit OS

My C: hard drive has 97.3GB free out of 288GB.
I use NVIDIA GeForce 8300 GS, version 260.99.
For protection, I use Microsoft Security Essentials.

(I'm not sure if that is enough information so just ask me to post more about something specific if need be.)I've had this issue myself on a number of machines.

Every time, it turned out to be disk problems. Your Mileage May Vary, of course.

1. Start->Run, "cmd"
2. chkdsk C: /r   at the prompt

tell it yes to it's question to unmount, then yes when it says effectively "I can't do it captain" and asks if you want to schedule it when you restart; then reboot.

The scan can take a rather long time so make sure you have something else to do for a few hours. Alright, I did the scan... CMD never asked me to unmount anything, it just said "The type of the file system is NTFS. Cannot lock current drive." Then it asked about scanning when I restart... Do you need info about the scan or something? No, not really. just let it run. It will either find issues (and hopefully resolve them) or not. In the former case with any LUCK it will stop freezing on you.Well nothing has really seemed to change, and my computer did freeze again while running many game clients... I've been using safe mode with networking a bit now and it hasn't frozen yet while in safe mode... Also, the last 3 times I tried to update Microsoft Security Essentials, my computer immediately froze during the update... Is there anything else I could try? (By the way, thanks for the help so far!)well, assuming you used /r with chkdsk, all I can think of (and it working fine in safe mode points to it as well) would be drivers, but I can't think of a good way to determine which one... (although if safe mode with networking works we can probably eliminate the network driver...)Yea I typed "chkdsk C: /r" into CMD... Anyways, I left my computer on doing a full security scan in safe mode with networking and it froze, so I guess safe mode isn't as safe as I thought... I might try to do another disk scan, because I tried to update Security Essentials right after the scan and it froze up, so maybe it didn't even get the chance to do anything? Quote from: Auzama on January 11, 2012, 09:12:09 PM

right after the scan? It did scan after you rebooted though, right?Yes the scan did complete after I rebooted, but my computer only lasted about 5 minutes before freezing again... Quote from: Auzama on January 11, 2012, 09:22:27 PM
Yes the scan did complete after I rebooted, but my computer only lasted about 5 minutes before freezing again...

Oh, OK, I misunderstood

In that case it probably isn't a disk error. That's the only time I've ever had  that happen; that leaves either hardware problems or driver problems.

One thing you could try, is booting onto a Linux or other bootable OS disc, and seeing if that freezes too. Quote from: Auzama on January 10, 2012, 02:28:09 AM

safe mode with networking and it froze

I'm confused.
How many network adapters do you have?
Can you post a screenshot of device manager? Please expand network adapters in the screenshot.

Alright, here it is...

[year+ old attachment deleted by admin]It looks like I solved my problem, I tried a whole bunch of different things until I WENT to my Power Options in the Control Panel... I had set it to High performance, and now I've set it to Power saver... Maybe I was just pushing my computer too far, because it has not frozen once in normal mode in the past 3 days... I also learned a few things from this whole ordeal, so I'm pretty happy... (Thanks for all the help!)

Solve : 1683526.exe? [Jenny, Don't Change Your Number]?

Answer»

Windows 7, 64-bit. All wireless network.

Fine last night, no reboot, no internet today.

Shows connected in system tray, but with that EXCLAMATION mark. Will not connect to wireless router's IP address in browsers.

The other machine on the network - this one - connects just fine.

Rebooted, got "Windows cannot find 1683526.exe'. Make sure you typed the name CORRECTLY, and then try again."

Did a System restore to yesterday morning, same results.

Can't find "1683526.exe" on the Google.

Suggestions?

Routers are behind and under furniture, so haven't tried a wired connection yet.Given there was no reference to it on Google, assume that it is malware.
Can you boot in sage mode?
Has it ever been on the Internet for long periods? Like overnight?
Do you use WEP on any  wireless routers?
Do your neighbors have wireless routers?
Have you ever used any USB device other that a keyboard or mouse that came with the machine?
Are you thee only person that uses this computer? Do you log in with a password? You may have a corrupted registry due to an infection. Please post the logs needed by following the guidelines in the Viruses and Spyware section.Didn't try safe mode yet - (If I could boot in "sage" mode, I wouldn't need you guys, now, would I?)

Wife and I use computer.

Yes on WEP also router is MAC-restricted.

USB Hard drives and sticks occasionally plugged in, but only I have access to the hard drives, and the sticks I've used have been in my control for months.

Didn't have time for Spybot before POSTING, will try that and Safe and see what happens.

Thanks... Didn't know if anyone had ever seen an .exe like that before.Well it's definetely not a Windows file so some other app is making a call tio the OS for it...most likely you are infected...
Update all your protection apps and run the scans overnite...
Post back with a list of which ones you use currently...AVG and Spybot are the residents; I ran a Kaspersky online scan on Monday or Tuesday (but that doesn't HELP with a Friday infection, I know)...Do them all again after updates...
Then Dload install update and run Malwarebytes...let it FIX whatever it finds.Malwarebytes - that's a new one. Will check it out.

Need to get this done before the Giants game!NOTE: There is a Free and paid ver....the Free should be fine for now...

Solve : Acer Crystal Eye Crystal webcam isn't working?

Answer»

I have the Acer Aspire Notebook 5734Z-4725. I have had the black screen with the USB sound going off. I've been getting a pop up saying I can USE a faster port but CLOSE it because I don't know about ports and don't want to screw up my computer and the pop up notice saying the camera is in use. I have deinstalled/reinstalled the driver. I have also done a system restore on the computer which set it back to factory settings that didn't work. As far as I can tell it is the same driver. SOMETIMES it seems to be working fine like the video will work but this is very rare and if I move my computer it puts my webcam back to a black screen. My webcam doesn't work with skype, ooVoo, msn, yahoo nothing.please help i'm so tired of it not working it has been like this over a month i have been on the internet for hours looking for a solution. Do you have a recovery option to reinstall the driver. NOTE : This image is on a Sony Vaio laptop but more likely SIMILAR.

Make sure you choose the similar feature if available and not use the restore to factory default as shown.

Solve : New hard drive installed - having trouble?

Answer»

Hello all!  This trouble may be in the wrong forum area.  I didn't KNOW where to put it.

Well, BAH!  I HAD a great Dell Insperon Tower UNTIL it crashed and I took it to be fixed

They put in a year 2002 hard drive and left me to CONFIGURE and download needed programs!

Of course Adobe products installed nicely - they have that download manager.

I TRIED downloading a download manager and after 10 tries, got it but it doesn't
help me.

In FACT it downloads the program with the developer's name as one of my users!

I'm desperate to download Paint.Net.  I would even go online to use it but I
can't find an online site that has it.

Oh boy!, I'm begging for help!  Thanks for any clues you have! What DLoad manager is this ? ?
If it does that i would NOT recommend it at all...FireFox browser has a solid DLoad manager built in.

As to Paint.net here is the Link

You will have to install the .net framework it asks for the 1st time you use it...

Solve : Bug Check -way over my head?

Answer»

Recently my computer will reboot on its own, even when it is idle. It doesn't happen a lot, but I am concerned about it. I went to the Event Viewer and it seems to be a Bug Check. I googled the debugging message which I didn't understand. I only learned about how over my head problems with dump files are.     My computer has a i7-2600 CPU, 8 gigs of ram, AMD Radeon HD 6770 1 gig ram video card and running Windows 7 Home Premium.

This is the message from the Event Viewer:
The computer has rebooted from a bugcheck.  The bugcheck was: 0x0000007f (0x0000000000000008, 0x0000000080050031, 0x00000000000406f8, 0xfffff88004ab3ec3). A dump was saved in: C:\Windows\MEMORY.DMP. Report Id: 010712-16348-01.

I will appreciate any help I can get in locating the problem causing the computer to reboot. By the way the only memory dump I could find in Windows was minidump and it won't let me access it.

One of three types of problems occurred in kernel-mode: (1) Hardware failures. (2) Software problems. (3) A bound trap (i.e., a condition that the kernel is not allowed to have or intercept). Hardware failures are the most common cause (many dozen KB articles exist for this error referencing specific hardware failures) and, of these, memory hardware failures are the most common.

Courtesy MSDN.

DLoad and run MemTest...let it run at least an hour.
Any errors at all and you have a bad stik of RAM.
No errors then we need to lookat/test other hardware components.I ran the MemTest and it passed with no errors. I connected a new wireless router about the same time this started happening. It seems to be working great, but could this be part of the problem? The router is a Cisco Linksys E-4200 and the firmware has been updated.

ThanksThe errors point to an issue with the display driver and/or direct-x. Download the latest driver for your system from the ATI website (assuming it's a desktop system) and the latest direct-x release. Then UNINSTALL the current ATI driver and the Catalyst Control Center (http://support.amd.com/us/kbarticles/Pages/GPU57RemoveOldGraphicsDrivers.aspx). Reboot. Then reinstall the new driver (and control center, if you so choose) as well as direct-x.Well Allan,  I have done what you have told me to so I guess I may have to wait a few days to know for sure whether drivers were the problem. I ran the dxdiag and it showed no problems. If I have any problems I will be back, otherwise I will check back in a few days to update you and close this POST as resolved! In the mean time, thank you so much for your patience and advise. You provide a great service and it is very much appreciated. Please do post back and let us know. Obviously something caused the problem and there are other diagnostic steps we can take if needed. But there is no doubt your blue screen error messages above clearly point to the display driver and direct-x. Good luck.Well, I left for awhile and came back to see that the computer had rebooted again. The below are a couple of the last items in the Event Viewer at the time of shut down or reboot. I don't know if these will help you or not.

Who else uses this PC ? ?
Someone has been foolin around with readyboost...which is a snake oil approach of using a USB stik to increase performance...
Somehow they have buggered it and it's causing these errors...that is if MemTest gave you a clean bill of health... Quote from: patio on January 08, 2012, 07:44:12 PM

ReadyBoot, not ReadyBoost. While you guys were posting my computer rebooted again. It REBOOTS too fast to read the comments on the blue screen. Anyway, below is the message I received when the computer started back up tell me the computer had recovered from a quick shut down.

I rebooted into safe mode and checked the Device Manager. It showed on my network adapters that my wi-fi was enabled and my Ethernet was disabled, which is the opposite of what I wanted. I enabled the Ethernet and disable the wi-fi as I am connected by an Ethernet cable. Could this be the problem, or part of it?Please run the blue screen viewer again (just post the two or three newest events). Thank you. Quote from: BC_Programmer on January 08, 2012, 08:08:44 PM

What should I do from here?
DISABLE any and all power management (suspend, hibernate, etc) that you have enabled and see if the problem goes away.

Basically the cause is a badly written driver for a USB DEVICE, usually it's caused by such a driver not being properly written to work with power management events. Another thing you could try is not using some of your USB devices; things like MP3 players, cellphones, etc, or trying to correlate which devices you have plugged in with when you get the bugcheck. It's also possible that you have a hardware problem with your USB hub, but that is quite unlikely and the problem is too localized to one SPECIFIC SOFTWARE cause. When I saw the multiple USB things, I figured it had something to do with that.  From what I can recall, it mostly happens when we plug in an iphone... so there is an issue with avoiding plugging that in, because of syncing and software updates from apple.  Do I need to upade the USB driver?  And if so, where do I go to do that?

Solve : Installed Office 2003 on Windows 7 computer and now it wont open?

Answer»

I installed Outlook 2003 on my new Windows 7 COMPUTER

When I opened it, it asked for me to set up the accounts and I made the mistake of closing out of it before finishing.

Now I get two boxes that come up-one says Microsoft OFFICE Outlook has stopped working-A problem caused the program to stop....windows will close the program. and also top box says Configuring Outlook Accounts.  but I have to close it.

I uninstalled, cleaned the cache, restarted computer and reinstalled.  Still no luck.  All other programs on the disc work.  Should I have installed it to the program folder that was not the 64bit?

What do I do?SuzanG, Please provide some more information about your system.  Why did you not FINISH doing the setup as the program requested?

Have you read this?
Windows 7 64 bit & Outlook 2003
If not, please do. You must use compatibly mode. For 2 years I have been running Office 2003 Professional on Windows 7 Professional 64 bit (Access, Powerpoint, Publisher, WORD, Excel, Outlook) and none of them need COMPATIBILITY mode. I have also sucessfully installed Office 2003 Service Pack 3, and I have installed all these without any problems or compatibility issues...

All other programs on the disc work.

The install disk could be damaged, or if it is a "Sharpie" version, that may be where your problem is.

Quote

Not sure what you mean by this. You run the install CD, and it installs the programs in the right folder. 64 bit programs go under C:\Program Files, and 32 bit programs go under C:\Program Files (x86). Office 2003 is a 32 bit set of applications, so on a 64 bit system, therefore, MS Office 2003 goes in C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\OFFICE11. If you install the proper way you don't get to choose to use (or not use) the program folder that is "not the 64 bit", whatever that is, so what did you do exactly?

Solve : Windows 7 freezes at Starting Windows screen?

Answer»

Hello all. This is a friends computer that he has asked me to take a look at. He purchased it at Walmart 13 months ago, and is no longer covered under warranty as I understand it. The problem started a few days after installing Pro Tools. When you started the computer it went through the emachines logo screen, to the windows is starting screen, and right after the first red dot appeared it would freeze. After waiting hours to see if it would move we decided to reformat the drive. That didn't solve anything and was a bad idea in RETROSPECT. So I put the hard drive into my computer and re installed windows 7 using my disc. However, this has not solved the problem and it still occurs in the emachine. I've also tried refitting all the cables and air-dusted around the heatsink and mobo.
If you try to enter in safe mode, use a windows disc, or run Ubuntu off usb it all freezes eventually. So I'm wondering if it's a power issue or perhaps the CPU.

Computer Specs:
eMachines model #EL1850G-42W
Processor: Intel Celeron E3400 2.60GHz
Memory: 2GB DDR3 SDRAM
Hard Drive: 320GB 7200rpm SATA
OP Drive: DVD SuperMulti drive
Graphics: Integrated Intel GMA X4500HD
Power Supply: 220W

Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks.
Yes. formatting the hard drive was a bad idea. The version of Windows 7 on that machine was for just that machine.

... try to enter in safe mode, use a windows disc, or run Ubuntu off usb it all freezes eventually. So I'm wondering if it's a power issue or perhaps the CPU.
Please elaborate. Ubuntu can run from the CD or can be installed on the hard drive. Which did you do?
No, not LIKELY the CPU or Power supply. It is the hard drive. A bad power supply would not even let you run Ubuntu. And a bad heat sink on the CPU would not let you get twenty minutes of use. A bad hard drive can lock the system at anytime. Most often in a few minutes. But to be sure, run some test on the drive in another machine. As a slave drive.

Western Digital and Se agate both have drive diagnostics on  their respective sites.

http://www.seagate.com/www/en-us/support/downloads/seatools/

Well like I said, when I plug his hard drive, a hitachi, and replace it with mine it works just fine. I've also tried putting my WD HDD into his computer, but I ended up having the same freeze at windows starting screen. Except when my hard drive was in it, it went into a reboot loop.

Quote
Please elaborate. Ubuntu can run from the CD or can be installed on the hard drive. Which did you do?
To clarify, I have the latest ubuntu saved on a flash drive. I used the option to run ubuntu from the usb, not install. I was under the impression though that this only uses the RAM for short term storage. What froze in this method was after chosing "Run ubuntu" it goes to a screen with lines of code that freezes after scrolling a few lines down.

Took your advise and ran a diagnostic tool. I used Drive Fitness Test that I found on Hiatchi's website, and it came back with no errors (Disposition Code 0x00). In case it helps here's more information about the hard drive:
Device: ATA
Model: HD5721032CLA362
Serial: HE1DSTAT
Cache: 14112 KB
Capacity: 320.07 GB

ThanksA badly corrupted hard drive will freeze the system. Even with software that does not even depend of the hard drive.
Ubuntu will try to identify the drive. When the drive does not respond normally, it can make the system electrically unstable* .The drive must be replaced. Otherwise, rebuilt  by a company that does that sort of thing. The cost is prohibitive for the average user. So you just buy a new drive.

*Electrically unstable. The electronics on the drive board makes the drive do something very abnormal. It ins a malfunction. Normal software does not anticipate this.Nor should it have to. Quote
we decided to reformat the drive. That didn't solve anything and was a bad idea in retrospect.

Why? What happened?

Quote

Why did you have to swap the hard drive into your computer to install? Does his not have a CD drive?

Did you get any errors during the install?

If you've wiped the recovery partition you can order a recovery disk from Emachines. http://us-store.emachines.com/rcd/

Try this:
Boot to the Ubuntu live USB and hold down the shift key as it's starting. This will bring up more boot options. Choose test memory. This will take a very long time to run. Report back if it finds any errors. Quote from: sjn2009 on January 20, 2012, 10:31:32 PM

220W is definitely at the lower end of the power supply spectrum.  Could possibly be an issue. Quote

I swapped his hard drive into mine because if you put the Windows 7 Installation disc into his pc it freezes at the exact same spot as I've described before.
This even happened if you try any other type of booting for windows. It will always freeze, on his machine.

I did not get any errors during the installation, nor after while opening random processes trying to see if it would freeze/crash.

I believe i ran this test after Ubuntu failed, and I don't remember if any errors came up. So I am running it again now and I will come back with any problems.Just thought I'd post an update on the memory test. After running for 4 hours, it ran 7 tests and found no errors. I still have it running though and will continue to until I notice something.4 Hours is plenty...if zero hours then the RAM is fine...
You can turn it off now.Okay thank you. So I guess the problem is indeed the hard drive then, I'll have to consult with him and see if he's ready to buy a new one. I was hoping I could give him one of my old ones that still work fine, but they're all IDE.For your earlier post you indicate that the drive works in an other PC, but fails test. Therefore the replacement of the drive is need, even though the PSU is wimpy. A bigger power supply is not a cure for a defective drive. The drive should only take about 35 watts.  Or less. Some hard drives will suck current went the go bad. Depends on the type of failure. The hard drive didn't fail any tests though. It just won't work in his computer, but works fine in mine. I hope that's what you were referring to, otherwise please explain.I think I misread your descriptions.

So this error was not in the alternative nPC?  If the drive is clean in the alternative PC then I was giving you wrong advice.
If ,it is not a case of drive failure then a fair guess either Power Supply or Motherboard. You hope it is not the motherboard.
You van try another PSU. May cost you about $35 far a standard 450 watt unit. Hard to believe it was only 220 watts. Make sure it has the cables for your motherboard. But that should not be a problem.

Amway., a spare PSU is always handy thing to have.
Ah that makes a little more sense. Well is there a way I can check the motherboard in the same way I've checked the HDD and RAM? I also dread if this will turn out to be a PSU issue, because the case size is as newegg puts it, "Small FORM Factor". Quote
"Small Form Factor".
What? Why didn't you say that before?
Now I would recommend a daily dose of Prosac.

Solve : Memory issue with Windows 7 64bit?

Answer»

Hello, I have a slight problem with my new upgraded memory. I upgraded my 4GB RAM laptop to 8GB.

As you can see there, my cached option is using ALL my memory, meaning there is no FREE memory left. This is leaving my laptop running like crap/slow.

I have attached a picture of my task manager, on the performance tab.

Here is my spec:

HP G62 laptop
AMD Turion II P520 Dual-Core processor
8 GB RAM
AMD M880G with ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4250
Windows 7 64bit Home Pre.

Thanks

[year+ old attachment deleted by admin]Have you tired going into your "start" menu and disabling all but the essential PROGRAMS running at start-up? After doing this you can reintroduce them one at a time to determine which program is causing the issue. truenorth Hi TrueNorth. I disabled all start-up programs as I factory restored my laptop, deleted all softwares which I will not use and whatnot. No program is using any memory (programs which are installed that is). After doing all this, the memory was fine, I installed AVG free and still fine.

What I can see from this is that windows updates is killing my memory in svchost.exe. So turned it so it checks but doesnt install updates and the memory seems fine.

Basically, Windows updates is the huge problem.

Now, I have another problem. After running memtest86 for around 5-6 hours, it found around over 1 million errors? I researched this and it seems to be that my motherboard is struggling with the max RAM upgrade. However, my question is that if my motherboard is struggling with the RAM upgrade, will this affect RAM performance? In trying to get a handle on your issue i have read quite a number of reviews on your laptop (well what i assume is your laptop). There seem to be a number of models of the G62. I was not able to find any reference to the option to upgrade the ram to 8gb so i assume that you did determine that it could be done before you did the upgrade. I am wondering what it was that prompted you to go from 4-8gb/ What were your desires for changed performance and based on what deficiency that you had been experiencing with 4. The reason i ask that is because it was a common report in ALL the reviews (regardless of the model) that they all suffered from trying to do intensive tasks such as games. It is in my opinion a good idea to change your windows update to manual from auto for a variety of reasons. In what manner (size and number) are the 8 gb of ram installed in? Is it all being displayed as available (subject of course to the demands of hardware components)?
Does this statement reflect  the current situation perhaps as a result of acting upon my earlier suggestion ( what i'm wondering here is has the situation improved since your original post)?"I disabled all start-up programs as I factory restored my laptop, deleted all softwares which I will not use and whatnot. No program is using any memory (programs which are installed that is). After doing all this, the memory was fine, I installed AVG free and still fine." truenorthHi Truenorth, its the g62 - A30SA model. Yes, I looked what the max upgrade was on the laptop before buying.

The reason for upgrading is because the amount of work I am doing, I edit photos, websites, listen to music and much more, so multi-tasking is a big thing here. The performance has been increased with no slow down when several softwares are open.

But the only thing which is annoying me is memtest86 is giving me over 1 million errors. These errors are telling me that my motherboard or PSU is either failing or my RAM is to much to handle.

However, figuring out the memory problem was my main issue and now solved. For the memtest86 errors, I will just ignore them because no errors are found in the O/S.

Thanks anyways.Well it's silly to ignore MemTest because if it reports any errors at all you have a bad STIK(s) of RAM...
Your issues will continue until it's replaced.I totally agree with patio's comments.Which by the way was where i was headed when i was inquiring re the size and disbursement of the ram in the computer. That is to say i was going to have you try and determine which one(s) are causing the issue. If a recently installed ram can be found to be at the root of this then if the purchase was recent it ought to be able to be returned and a replacement procured. So  if you want to go further (which i do recommend you should) then if you know what to do then i urge you to do it. If not we can assist you with that--but again i would NOT ignore it. truenorthMemory allocation looks normal for Win7-64
It also says you have 6GB available.  Free memory does no good unless it's being used.

If MemTest is reporting errors, remove the 1 stick & run again.  then swap sticks to see if 1 is bad & not the other.I will do a memtest86 test on each RAM stick, around 5 passes will do.

I did some other tests and surprisingly it passed on the memory side. My personal option is that as the motherboard has maximum RAM inserted, its struggling with the power, meaning errors on the motherboard. The memtest86 does say it tests memory and motherboard, thats why I used several other programs to determine if its the memory or not.
Also, some people are SAYING the PSU isn't strong enough, I believe they are talking about a desktop and not laptop (people never read).

If it is the motherboard struggling, would you think its best to have a 6GB RAM instead of 8GB?Change size of VIRTUAL Memory to System Managed.
Here's my HP notebook for reference.
I suspect the new memory module is not the same specs as the original.

Solve : Windows 7 32-bit to 64-bit?

Answer»

When I bought my computer, it came with Windows Vista and a free upgrade to Windows 7 - the 64-bit version.

I took my computer in to repair a while ago and, EVER since, my computer has SAID that only 3 GB of my ram was usable out of 6 GB. I've just found out that the repair shop REINSTALLED windows 7 but the 32-bit version and that I need to get my 64-bit version back. So, I got my "upgrade kit" and tried to reinstall windows 7 but it only lets me do phase 3 of the upgrade process (which is to restore files). It won't let me get my 64-bit version (phases 1 and 2).

How do I get my 64-bit version of windows 7 back? If I have the code, can I get it online somewhere? I have 2 CDs: a Packard Bell Upgrade Media and a Microsoft Windows Upgrade Media. I understand that I might lose data, but I can reinstall all my games. I just need my ram back to be able to play them...What do you mean it "came with Vista"? Did it have Vista installed and then you ran a Windows 7 upgrade disk? If so, I think you will have to get it back to its first condition before you can run the upgrade. Did you get a recovery disk? If not, you may have to order one from the computer maker. Calling their customer service number would be a good first step. Also you may have a valid complaint against the repair shop.

Erias is right.
You must complaint to repair shop.
Since the shop FORMATTED the hard drive to install windows 7 32-bit and erase the partition that contain Windows Vista 64-bit your out of luck, with the CD's or DVD's you have.

The only way to get it back to Windows 7 64-bit, is to order the full restore CD's or DVD's from manufacture , since the ones that come with the computer are just the drivers and programs, but it doesn't include the Operating System.
From there just upgrade to Windows 7 64-bit.

But the easiest way to get it back to Windows 7 64-bit is to get the Full Copy of Windows 7 64-bit from somewhere and just install the drivers and programs you want and your done.I disagree...
The Vista Restore partition (hidden) is probably still on the PC...
He can do the Restore...then re-run the Upgrade pack choosing 64Bit in Setup.

Okay sorry, missed that. You're going to want to reformat and reinstall the OS at some point, but I understand you first want to get your data files off the drive. If they are not on the system partition it's easy, but if they are you need to either slave the hd to access and copy the files or you can do a parallel install of the OS (install a second instance of the OS on the same partition) and access the files from there. After that's done, reformat and reinstall.

Solve : Can I upgrade to Windows 7 ??

Answer»

Presently I'm using windows xp media center edition service pack 2. Now I want to install windows 7 on my machine. Can it increase the performance on my machine when comparing to xp ?

My system specifications are....

Acer aspire 4720 notebook

Intel core 2 duo 1.5GHz processor
160 GB HDD
1 GB RAM
Windows 7 is more graphics intensive than Windows XP, so I don't see how INSTALLING it on your laptop will improve the performance of the computer.  Windows 7 will easily install onto your laptop, but I wouldn't expect to see any significant performance IMPROVEMENTS.

According to this, you just barely meet the REQUIREMENTS for the ram, although these specifications may be just recommended because VISTA would work with only a half a gigabyte, and I've used the beta version of Win7 with only a half a Gigabyte.
I think the aero interface is what requires the extra half a gigabyte..

Solve : Migrating from XP to Windows 7?

Answer»

Is it easy to migrate softwares from XP to WINDOWS 7 and what is the procedure?
will it effect on the performance
FYI - check the blogs/forums...

Many people ask about migrating from Windows XP to Windows 7, so I thought I would share an excerpt from the Engineering Windows 7 blog:

There's no change here to the plan as has been discussed on many forums.  We REALIZED at the start of this project that the “upgrade” from XP would not be an experience we think would yield the best results. There are simply too many changes in how PCs have been configured (applets, hardware support, driver model, etc.) that having all of that support carry forth to Windows 7 would not be nearly as high quality as a clean install. This is something many of you know and already practice. We do provide support for moving FILES and settings and will prompt at setup time, but applications will need to be reinstalled. We know that for a set of customers this tradeoff seems less than perfect, but we think the upfront time is well worth it.

If you have any questions about the specifics of performing a clean install (also known as a CUSTOM install) or migrating user settings, please ask your questions in a new thread in this forum.

Sincerely,

-Tony Mann
No upgrade path from XP to 7...
You could try the FAST ( files and settings transfer wizard ) but don't take this as a recommendation.Honestly, I'd just do a clean install. There's no upgrade path from Xp to 7.

Solve : Vista Home + Windows 7?

Answer»

Vista Home + Windows 7 together? No quite.
I ordered Vista home b4 Win7 was official,
LOOK what I got:

I have to upgrade to Win 7 by doing a download.
The magnifier was not INCLUDED. But I need it to read the EULA! Quote

Well of course silly

Windows 7 is not released yet so how can they send you the DISC?

I think you can get them to send you a disc INSTEAD, though.

Solve : Bluetooth KB & Mouse not recognized?

Answer» INSTALLED 7 as a dual boot option this morning. I'm using a Logitech MX5500 BT mouse & KB combination. Windows 7 was able to RECOGNIZE & use both natively immediately after the install. I then installed the latest setpoint sw ( 4.8 ) which is Windows 7 compatible. Everything went smoothly - the mouse & kb were recognized and setup by setpoint. Then I rebooted:

1) After REBOOTING into 7, the mouse & kb do not work. I tried getting setpoint to reinitiate both bluetooth devices, but nothing happens. If I press the "connect" button(s) nothing happens. If I try to do it from within setpoint nothing happens.

2) If I reboot to Vista everything is fine

3) I find this one very odd: When I reboot I get to the OS/boot SELECTION screen. If Vista is highlighted everything is fine. But as soon as I highlight Windows 7, the kb is no longer recognized and does not work. Again, on the boot selector screen everything is fine if Vista is highlighted - but if I use the cursor arrow on the kb to toggle up to the Windows 7 entry the kb immediately stops working and I either have to connect a usb kb or reboot to get out of that screen.

Obviously the bios is set to recognize usb devices on boot (or it wouldn't work at all on the boot screen - not even with Vista). Other than replacing the kb with a wired one (which I'm considering), I'm stumped. Any thoughts?
Any Bluetooth options in BIOS ? ?

If they initially installed and worked properly then failed on re-boot that's where i'd look first.Except that it works fine in Vista AND at the boot screen if Vista is selectedOkay - betterer & betterer

HW isn't my strength so I took your advice and checked the bios - nothing relating to bluetooth at all. Exited bios (w/o saving changes - though I didn't make any) and the kb worked at the boot screen. Booted to 7 and the mouse worked, so I opened setpoint and the kb did not show up. Tried to initiate it and lost use of both the mouse AND the kb. Booted back to Vista and all is good.

Soooo, I'm guessing that there is some sort of incompatibility between 7 and either my BT or my kb & mouse or setpoint. Regardless, I'll probably just get a wired kb and non-bt wireless mouse and then upgrade from Vista to 7. Thanks for your interest patio Pretty strange i say...
Did you try reverting back to the Vista drivers ? ?
Is this 64Bit ? ?32 Bit - I can't use 64 because of a couple of old, proprietary custom apps.

I assume you mean did I try reverting to the Windows 7 driver? I did not, but I know that's an option if I just uninstall setpoint.Well, this morning I did uninstall setpoint from the 7 installation and everything is usable with the native drivers. It's just a test installation anyway, but still......

Solve : windows Vista decryption for XP encryption?

Answer»

I was using my office laptop running XP professional. I CONNECTED my usb drive and the folders got auto encrypted. Since i don't have the work laptop anymore, i'm stuck as i'm unable to decrypt the files. I'm currently using Windows Vista Home Premium, having the full admin privileges. Any ideas on how to decrypt the files now ?Nothing gets "auto-encrypted" without a prompt...
Remember the password or look elsewhere for a solution. Quote from: PATIO on October 19, 2009, 06:57:38 PM

Nothing gets "auto-encrypted" without a prompt...

Well, as i said earlier, its a work computer and they have some kinda security patch where in at every restart the folders/files are applied encryption.

Anyways, LETS not DISCUSS that. The question is, could the files encrypted in Win XP be decrypted in Vista (with admin privileges) ?almost anything encrypted can be decrypted. Even stuff from XP using Vista. The real problem is how to do it.

Now think about this....why did your work encrypt them to begin with? Maybe a reason is so someone who copied the files from work and took them home to try to read couldn't? humm Sounds about right to me.

lol .... I understand what you are SAYING. That is why they have that encryption patch. Anyways, the problem is my personal folders got encrypted too in my usb drive like my timesheet etc .... but then you would say the same stuff about copying work files.

Thanks anyways guys, i'm asking them to give back the same laptop i worked on for a couple minutes so I could decrypt and give them back ... its just a help from them.

Cheers!!

Solve : Playing an Audio File with Batch File?

Answer»

Can someone help me out with this? I don't know what I'm doing wrong.

I put: Quote

mplay32 /play /close c:\Users\Connor\Desktop\abc.wav
into NOTEPAD and name it file.bat

but it's not working. May I suggest something. When ever you have a problem with batch FILES, it helps to simplify things and make them more direct. You should have received some type of error message if the Windows media PLAYER was not available, or could not find the file.
Just now I made a new audio file that I called "test.wav" and after adjusting the volume level and effects, I placed it in an empty directory on the C: drive. I had named the directory WAV so  now the new audio file I just created is in that directory.

So now this is what I do at the command prompt.
C:\WAV>mplay32 /play /close TEST.WAV

Works fine for me.
Can you duplicate this on your system?

Hmmm ok, I put a folder named wav in C, I put my .wav file into it(it's named ABC), I wrote, "C:\WAV>mplay32 /play /close abc.WAV" in wordpad, saved it as wavplay.bat. When I click it it opens a DOS window and closes too fast to read, and it put a file that's not associated with anything on the desktop. The file is named mplay32. I don't know what the problem is.OK. I ran it directly from the command line.
here is a BAT files I make and put in the same directory.
Quote
mplay32 /play /close TEST.WAV

I am using XP. It runs fine in the batch file when i run the file inside of Windows Explorer. It opens a DOS window (Command box) and runs the wmp and at the end of the files it closes.
Note. Make sure any other audio programs are not active.
I'm running a 65bit OS. Would that make a difference in any of this? Quote from: Ravenholm on October 20, 2009, 09:50:56 PM
