Solve : Someone lended me a Windows 7 Disc and it said "Good for three activations"?

Answer»

Hi! Someone is lending me a Windows 7 Professional DVD this early. He said it is good for three activations. Does that mean that I can only activate three times or I can install it on three computers at once.Forgive a silly question, but why don't you ask him?He doesn't know what he's TALKING about...
Win7 hasn't been released yet so it's either the Beta or RC...
If it's the BETA and you install it you will have the adventure of it taking a dump and not RUNNING for 2 hours each day til it times out altogether...3 activations most likely means it can be activated 3 times, but only installed on one system.

On the other hand, if it were 3 licenses, then you would be able to install it on 3 systems.

Activations and licenses aren't the same thing. That being said it's not a Win7 DVD...unless the GUY who gave it to you WORKS in Redmond Wash....

Solve : RAM usage reach 80-90%?

Answer»

RAM usage reach 80-90% when installing games, HIGH-end games like NFS the Run, Starcraft 2, Rainbow Six Vegas,
when i install the games my memory usage always reach to very high 80-90 and sometimes 98% and after installing the memory usage doesnt go low, and i have to restart my laptop for my ram to run in normal usage. when i install applications like MSword2007 and microsoft visual studio 2008 my memory usage does'nt reach that high. im using WINDOWS 7 home premium and i'm using Asus k53sv with i5-2430m with 4gb ram.any one know how to fix the INSTALLATION problem? Why is this a problem? Restart you PC after installing significant software. Is it normal when using windows 7?because i think memeory usage should automatically run normal when there is no WORK load process that is being executed and i dont remember experiencing this when i was still using XP?It's normal.  UNUSED memory is useless memory.

Solve : Tune-up program installed now wont go to log in screen?

Answer»

Hi everyone I have just installed Tune-up thinking it was a good idea. WELL I saw a cool feature to CHANGE the logon screen background and startup background and some other background. I cleared out the files when I ran the program or w/e it does and then I restarted it to see the cool new background!

Yes the cool background shows BUT the login bar and little icon where you type your password does not show. WOO cool background but now my comp doesnt work, I have tried to do startup repair and RESTORE from a previous point but I dont have a restore point saved. I was wondering if there is a possible command promt command that I can try to reset all of the backgrounds or files.

I'm running windows vista, Dell XPS, so its a decent computer. I am also a game DEV and have SEVERAL files on there that I need. PLEASE HELP!what happens if you try to boot to safe mode? Can you log in this way?when I boot into safe mode it seems like it is loading fine then it gets stuck on something after crcdisk.sys. I just got an e-mail from their support team and I'm gonna try to see if that works but please feel free to put in any fixes that might help. What type of files are these that you need (you mentioned game dev stuff)?

What computer are you using to type your messages on this forum, if you can get your harddrive connected to the working PC and assuming that pc reads harddrive and its current contents, you could backup your files you need

Assuming your startup repair was initiated from a windows disc, is it a windows upgrade disc, or a factory restore disc, or a full windows install disc?

Solve : Loss of HDD space with Defrag?

Answer»

Hi everyone.

I've HEARD this is normal, but I'm still concerned.

I'm using Piriform's Defraggler to defrag my Hard DRIVE.

It TOOK about 6 hours to complete, and after it completed, I had 9 Gigs less of space on my Hard Drive than I had before I started.

When I started, I had 130GB; but after it finished I had 121GB.

I think this is normal, but is there any way I can get that space back?It is not normal. Have you emptied the recycle bin and TEMPORARY Internet Files Folder? It's possible System Restore created a restore point during that period of time - the biggest user of disk space is System Restore. Also check and empty your temp folder.I have emptied the recycle bin, temp internet files, and temp folder.
I've also deleted all restore points except my most recent one.OKBut I still didn't get my space backhttp://www.jam-software.com/treesize_personal/

Solve : Unrar batch file?

Answer»

Hi!

I'm new to this forum so I hope I'm posting at the right PLACE

I would like some help with creating a .bat file. I unpack a lot of tv series and other STUFF, and I do this with the Command Prompt. Now I got an idea that I can have a script that will help me do this faster

I'll do this step by step.

First when I open the cmd i have to write my winrar INSTALLATION PATH (set path="C:\Program Files (x86)\WinRAR\";%path%)

Then I have to change the directory to where I want the files to extract to.
For example

cd /d D:\Test\Test1

Then I have to write unrar e "D:\files\tvseries\*" -r *.avi

I was wondering if anyone of you guys know if I can get a script to do it in the following way.

set path="C:\Program Files (x86)\WinRAR\";%path% (inserted auto when I open the .bat file)

Then I get a MESSAGE saying "Enter Location:"

And I only have to write D:\Test\Test1 instead of cd /d D:\Test\Test1

Then a message saying "Enter folder"

And I only need to write D:\files\tvseries instead of unrar e "D:\files\tvseries\*" -r *.avi

Thanks in advance

Solve : Windows 7 - BitLocker Questions?

Answer»

I was wondering if BitLocker for WIN7 would be a nightmare if say the Win7 became corrupt?

With normal NTFS drive you can slave the drive or external USB the drive and have access to the data.

If your system is bricked from proper boot and BitLocker enabled... is your data bricked as well with the BitLocker encryption enabled from retrieving important info via slave or external HD method?

"OR" Is there a way to make a clean install on a different drive with same encryption KEY and have a passthrough encryption match between the drive that has the bricked OS to get the data retrieved that way?Maybe.
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/magazine/2008.06.bitlocker.aspxafter struggling with double-space and stacker I no longer ever USE low-level encryption or compression tools.I personally don't and probably never will trust it with my Data...but that is just personal opinion.

The few people i've talked to that have seemed to have no ISSUES but none had the scenario you described above so i can't say.

Solve : ntoskrnl.exe error - no windows disk - polish laptop!?

Answer»

Hi

I've been given a polish Acer 5630 laptop that when I turn on comes up with an ntoskrnl.exe error message. It's not letting me start windows normally or in any other mode and I don't have a Windows Vista disk. How can I restore system and the factory settings?

ALSO translating the error messages from polish to English is quite laborious, is there any way of changing the language settings from the boot up menu?

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated! Thanks! Quote

If you have other version, then, no. You'll need to buy English Vista version.

I can translate from Polish to English for you, though Apologies for the delayed response, I've been on holiday far away from broken laptops!

If you could translate this text than that would be fantastic:

Do you have any idea how to go about resolving this?

Thanks again.Windows failed to start. The reason may be latest hardware or software change. To resolve the problem:
1. Insert Windows installation disk and restart computer.
2. Select language and click Next.
3. Select "Repair".
If you don't have Windows disk, contact the administrator or computer maker.
Info: Windows can't start, because some file is missing or damaged.

I'm not sure though, what exactly you're trying to do.Thanks for that. I'd just like to get back into Windows again but I don't have the installation disk. Is there any way around this?At what point are you STUCK?
What's happening?
Even, if you fix, whatever is broken, what are you going to do with Polish Windows?Nothing's happening at all, but I'd like to be able to get back into Windows. The owner of the laptop is polish but I said I'd have a look at it to try and find a solution to the ntoskrnl.exe problem but it's proving a lot harder than I initially thought! Is there anyway to restore Windows and get rid of the problem without the installation disk? No.
You need an installation CD.
The version and installed Service Packs need to match. You'll need CD anyway, because what are you going to do with Polish Windows...is there any way of GETTING hold of the cd that you can think of without having to pay a fortune? If the laptop has a COA sticker with a serial# on it you can simply borrow a matching XP CD and do a re-install of XP...
Or you can contact Acer and see if they will ship you Recovery CD's...

Solve : Can going from Vista Home Premium OEM to XP Professional Retail void Warrenty??

Answer»

Vista GOT worse now than back in 2006 when I tried the Beta2 release. Home Premium makes me more unproductive. XP Professional supports some FEATURES I will need. I may lose DVD maker and making HD VIDEOS but I am ok without making HD or 16:9 videos UNTILL I get another system. I will also get a preformance gain.
PS: The XP copy is retail. If my PC fails, I can send it in and reinstall it with XP professional.
Worth the downgrade?Contact the manuf.

And make sure beforehand that XP drivers are available for all components...especially the MBoard chipset drivers.

Solve : Completely delete programs (itunes) in Vista?

Answer»

Vista 64 bit Home Prem.

I used Programs and Features to remove what itunes programs and files it listed.  I want to start all over with itunes.

I know there are more itunes programs and files to remove that are not listed in P&F because I DOWNLOADED more; itunes 64 bit v8 and v9.

I don't know why both programs where not listed in P&F.

What is the next proper way to locate everything related to itunes in order to remove them.

Thanks,

Tom Each new version of iTunes uninstalls any previous version it finds before installing. If you uninstalled via Pgms & Features you should be fine.Hm... are you saying you uninstalled iTunes, but found stuff laying around?

This is normal. When you remove iTunes, it leaves behind preference files for your librarys and settings, so when you reinstall it, you can quickly resync. Well I don't know (because all programs were not listed in P&F) what programs I removed and which programs and or files remain.

I just tried to start itunes and get this error messgage:

The file "ituunes Library.itl" cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of itunes.

This err msg started after I downloaded v8 on top of v9.  I obviously should hafe remoed v9 first but I couldn't find it to remove it.

This is why I want to remove everything that is associated with itunes so I can start all over.

Thanks again.

T

I have to leave for work and check BACK in late tonight to see what new idea's you may have about removing all associated programs versions for sure. Well why are you trying to install an earlier version?

Never mind, none of my business. You can just go into the itunes folder and delete all files if you like. It's in \Users\username\music\itunesyup, system restore. Other than that, you would have to go in and manually delete everything iTunes put into the registry yourself.

You can also try install iTunes 9 again, and replace whatever iTunes 8 took out.

If that doesn't work, you might be looking at a clean install dude.I can use that path to remove all files in itunes but I need to remove all programs.

To answer one question from one responder; I first downloaded v9.  I couldn't get it to work.

I figured v9 would do the trick.

I wondered if there was a incompatibility problem with itunes v9 64 bit and an ipod that was about a year old so I downloaded v8 on top of that.

Hense I get the error message and need to MAKE sure I remove all programs from the registry.

Is this my only way and how do I go about safely.  I have no experience (obviously) with 64 B Vista.  Teach me how to delete items from the registry properly and or maybe use HiJackThis to delete registry items.

Then I will start all over after I get advise on how to use itunes and my PC. a thread I started in the apple forum.

Hope I answered all your questions this time.  Thanks again, TomWhat do you mean all programs? Itunes is itunes - one program. And if I were you I'd post on the Apple forum and see why you can't get ver 9 to work before fighting this battle to get v8 installed.Or you could GIVE Revo Uninstaller a try as well...Sir.  What is Revo Uninstaller?Google is your friend: http://www.revouninstaller.com/

Solve : Several problems with computer?

Answer»

Hello. I'm new to the forum and I don't know what the heck I am doing, so please, BEAR with me!

I have an Acer laptop running Vista SP2. It is a 64-bit operating system. I have ZoneAlarm Extreme Security and Windows Defender. I'm not sure what other info to give.

I just have so many problems with it lately. First I tried to update Flash but it failed. Then I kept getting popups from Internet Explorer "Do you want to allow software such as ActiveX controls and plug-ins to run?". (I updated to IE8 but I'm not sure if I did that before or after the problem.)

So I tried Firefox. That worked for awhile. Now I can't use the search bar (I can type but it won't search when I hit enter), there is no history, and I can't bookmark pages. That seemed to start after I tried to play a song on Windows Media Player that was sent from a friend (no problem for anyone else who played it). When I tried to play the song, I got a blue screen (can't remember what it said other than it would restart in seconds) and then my computer restarted. I did have Firefox up while I was using WMP.

And another problem that has arisen. I have tried to download some files (suggested updates, scans, etc.) and they all appear on the desktop as blank white boxes. When I double-click on them I get a box asking me what program I want to use to open it.

I almost forgot that about a month ago I was LOOKING at pics my son had posted on Facebook. When I clicked on one I got a popup saying it was a security warning and I needed to run a scan on my computer. I tried to close it by clicking on the X but it started running anyhow. I immediately closed the browser and ran a full scan which found nothing.

I have no clue what I am doing.
Can anyone help me?
Thank you in advance,
KayMomWelcome to CH, Kaymom!

You might want to take a look at this.

Do not post the logs here. Thanks, Dairyman. But I can't open any files I SAVE to my computer. So I don't know how to proceed.

Thanks,
KayMomPlease tell me you didnt pressed the okay button at the scan pop-up. That would infect your entire pc, Ive been working on a pc from a customer at work, and it took me 2 days to fix it.

about that "ZoneAlarm Extreme Security"  how safe is that software, because I have heard serveral people and read serveral reviews about it and that wasn't really good.... I haven't tested those programs myself so I don't know how good they work. but your problems are somewhat the same as other people have/had with " ZoneAlarm Extreme Security" on there pc.

Please do a software check on your pc, and if you don't trust something.. delete it, if something is in your computer and was added at the same day your problems started or 1-2 days later.. delete it. (unless you know 100% sure it's a safe program)

I hope I'm wrong, but i fear you got malware on your pc.it appears that the registry has been corrupted (or, at least certain associations) wether this is a problem with malware, I'm not sure.

The "Scan" you saw within your browser was not, at that point, dangerous. The idea being that it will "scan" your PC (actually, it doesn't, but rather "pretends" to scan your PC, as it does not have access to your PC from the browser, and was likely just an animated picture). After the "scan" it would then tell you you need to download a program to fix it. However since you closed it it did not even get that FAR . Additionally, since the "Scan" as well as the "popup" are merely images, pressing the "OK" button, specifically, is not possible, and as you've discovered the sneaky buggers simply hotlink the entire image (therefore the X button also takes you there).

I suspect that this new issue is merely a result of corruption of your registry data, and unrelated to your previous issues.

The caveat in this case is the program that might help fix it, System Restore, is- well, a program - and will likely give you the same error. quite the pickle indeed.

Can you run ANY programs? try using "Run as administrator", which executes another program with a parameter, and might succeed. Also, try booting into safe mode, which is achieved by pressing "F8" during startup immediately before the Windows logo appears. (Personally I just repeatedly press it after the initial boot-up screen).

Thank you for the replies!
I can run other programs.

I will try to download and run the scans again.
Thanks for the help.
KayMomVista is pretty buggy. At work we had a huge problem with brand name laptops (hp, dell, acer, gateway, sony).  The problem caused a large amount of laptops to bluescreen at different times. The sony's would crash when you put a usb device in them. The hp's would just bluescreen after five minutes after logging into windows. We fixed this problem by uninstalling an update (KB968389). It was nasty, we definitely had our work cut out for us for a week or so.

We also see a lot of vista machines that have that desktop problem. Some of the computers wont allow anything to be saved to desktop, or even run. We just wiped the OS to save time, but i would assume it was the registry. It s way quicker to just WIPE a system for us.

Solve : Boot loader problems?

Answer»

Greetings everyone,

I'm running "Windows 7 ultimate - 64 bit"

I've been experiencing boot loader issues. My computer works fine but somehow boot loader seems to have gotten a mind of it's own. I can't find it in "msconfig" or in "STARTUP and recovery". Both places say that Windows boots up without any other OS. However when I start windows it gives me a 25 SECOND wait time, Windows 7 at the TOP of the list, and then 3 listings of a Windows Vista server or something like that.

Disk management and dxdiag attached. Hopefully someone has a clue what's going on

With thanks,
Preacher

[year+ old attachment deleted by admin]Describe how you installed W7 and whether there were previous Windows versions installed (list all installed Windows versions in the order they were installed)

Thanks for answering Salmon.

I've never had any other version of windows loaded, but I had to reinstall this version 3 or 4 times due to some problems. The "server listing" I've no idea why is there.  This boot menu just popped up after the latest install.

There was an old install of Windows 7 on another partition (not the SSD) but I've now deleted that partition and combined it with another (old data on the picture). Press Windows Key + R

Solve : background Internet activity?

Answer»

How can I identify what program is downloading or interacting on the Internet, in the background [i.e. without my desire to do so]. Task manager does not seem to tell me OR I do not know what to look for.Let's start at the top, shall we? First, what makes you think anything is accessing the internet? Second, what APPS do you have open? Third, open task manager to the processes tab, sort on the cpu column with highest usage at the top (double click on the title "CPU") and let us know if anything is using the processor. After you provide a little more info we can go from there. Thanks for reply.

While logged on to Internet, Task manager, networking, indicates that something is being up and downloaded yet the applications tab does not identify what

I have looked at the cpu usage and have seen that on some processes it changes but I usually cannot identify which program is associated.

While this is happening, I cannot do any other work on the Internet - WHOLE BANDWIDTH is used [it seems].

Oh, I should mention that I live in the boonies and so am working thru a modem in 200 kpbs rangeOkay, I still don't understand. What do you mean that task manager, networking indicates something is being up and downloaded? How do they indicate that?

And I don't understand why you can't see what process is using the cpu if you did what I told you to and sorted on the cpu column.I need to add that I believe the problem to either be a sneaky virus which is using me as a zombie or one of my programs that is set to download automatically [w/o asking me or telling me -- Adobe has done this to me a couple of times but has eventually told me about it]Okay. Paranoia aside HOW DO YOU KNOW something is using the internet? You still haven't explained that.

And feel free to run full scans with BOTH your AV utility AND either MalwareBytes or Super AntiSpyware
On my task manager, under networking, I can see a graph of activity [downolding stuff to my PC].
I can see what process is using  the cpu but I cannot identify/recognize any of my known programs [software] with the process.AVG antivirus gives my PC a clean bill of health.

The activity at times goes on for 10, 15, 20+ minutes at times and will not let me download anything that I choose.Well what process is it?
And how do you know something is being uploaded or downloaded? That graph simply shows activity (such as an EMAIL program checking for email, or web pages reloading, etc). And what about MalwareBytes or Super AntiSpyware?I do not have the problem at this time so I cannot identify a process for you.

I do believe that there is an upload/download activity because I cannot do anything else on the Internet [or it slows to less than a CRAWL] for minutes on end. When the task manager indicates little or no graph activity, then I can work on the Internet. This is more than just checking for possible email.

I have not done anything about MalwareBytes or AntiSpyware. They are not on my PC [or do they need to be?]Yes - download of them and run it. Also Download Mike Lin's Startup Control Panel - we'll use it later.

Check Scheduled Tasks - is there anything there?

And after you scan with MalwareBytes we'll talk about trying a clean boot to see what happens.Ok let me make this easier to understand.
Your router is in constant communication with your computer and the server. It WILL keep flashing and look like activity. There is no dodgy activity as long as you have a proper WPA key password. The router needs to keep in constant contact with the server so it may look like activity but it's not.
This is nothing to worry about it's not a virus or malware. The uploading and downloading is just usual traffic.
If you have run full system scans and there are no trojans etc, and you have a password WPA in place you have nothing to worry about.I have and am downloading the recommended software.

Other than Task Manager, is there some other software which will show me what program [including Outlook Express, Windows Mail, etc.] are accessing the InternetI'm going to log off soon, so let me tell you what I suggest you do after the MalwareBytes scan.

Using Mike Lin's Startup Control Panel, uncheck all startup items and reboot. Do you still see something accessing the internet (and again, that's all it is I'm sure - I sincerely doubt anything is being uploaded or downloaded)? If not, it's one of the items you unchecked that is making the connection. You can start adding them back one or two at a time, rebooting after each, until you see the activity recur and you'll know which one it is.

Solve : Win7 x64 PC restarting randomly after ~1.5 days of uptime?

Answer»

Hello.

Back in the 22nd Dec. the power supply deiced to quit.
This may or may not have damaged the hardware.

I had to reinstall windows because the old windows installation got corrupt.

I have new psu and the computer seemed to work fine, only started to get random restarts last week.

1/3rd of the restarts is found in the Event Viewer with a message like "The computer has rebooted from a bugcheck. The bugcheck was: 0x0000007e (0xffffffffc0000005, 0xfffff80002faedd3, 0xfffff88002fe78f8, 0xfffff88002fe7150). A dump was saved in: C:\Windows\MEMORY.DMP. Report Id: 011012-33665-01."

I have installed some windows updates before it happened, but i don't think they caused it.

The CPU, Motherboard and RAM was all part of an upgrade package from a good store here in Scandinavia.

The ram sticks are matched, it said on the package, 2x2GB (Corsair Value Select VS2GB1333D4).

Forgot to mention the current psu is 1.5 years old but should as new due it has only been tested since i bought it.

I've run  Memtest86+ from UBCD and it didn't show any errors.

I have also run MHDD v.4.6 on the OS-hdd from same cd with following result:

(Photo taken using a poor mobile camera)Have you tried RESOLVING this by reinstalling on any available driver updates for your hardware components? Video card, chipset, wireless card. That did not work, on the chat someone mentioned a new psu might help.

New psu did help, but then Windows 7 didn't co-operate well with the every-day software installed.

Due to this I wiped it and PUT in XP 32Bit instead. And it works fine now.

Solve : WMP11 and Windows Vista: WMP11 won't open/close properly?

Answer»

This is driving me mad, because I've searched and searched for a solution to this and can't find it. I know how to fix this in XP, but the fix won't work in Vista. This is my laptop I'm talking about here (HP Pavilion dv6700 w\ Vista Home Premium SP2). The problem started after download Windows updates in early August and happened prior to applying SP2, so I don't think that's the issue.

When I open a media file, LET's say an MP3, the file begins to play, but the WMP window never appears. I can control the playback with the media keys on my keyboard, and wmplayer.exe appears in the processes list, but the WMP window never opens and there's no task bar button for it. If I open WMP through its shortcut first, it opens fine. However, when the WMP window is open and I close it (either through the X button in the corner or File menu -> Exit) the WMP window closes, but playback doesn't stop and the process continues to appear in the processes list until I select it and choose 'End Process', then the playback will stop and the process will end.

I tried downloading what Microsoft calls "the latest version" on their website of WMP11, but when I go to install it, I get "There is a more recent version of Windows Media Player (11.0.6002.18065) already installed on your computer. It is not possible to use an older installation package (11.0.5721.5146) to install files or to repair your current version of the Player."

I saw it recommended somewhere on the Microsoft forums to use SFC /SCANNOW to fix issues with WMP in Vista, but SFC came back saying nothing was wrong.

Also, and this may be unrelated, about 1 in 3 times when I minimize WMP to the task bar, it CAUSES Windows Explorer to crash and reset. According to http://support.microsoft.com/kb/944883, I've downloaded and installed the patch, so I'll see if that fixes that.

-=EDIT=-
Nevermind about that patch. Same issue, but says the patch doesn't apply to my system. It's for 11.0.6000.6500.Hmm, very strange, quaxo.  I have a Compaq laptop with same OS, SP, and WMP as you.  I imagine you'd hate to take the extreme measure of REINSTALLING Windows but I don't know what else to suggest.  Hopefully, someone will have some other ideas.I really didn't want to go that far, but I might have to. This computer has been acting very peculiar today. I don't think it's related to the WMP issue, as that's been happening for about a month with no other issues. Anyway, I'll wait and see if anyone else has some opinion on this before I go to the measure of reinstalling.

I think it's stupid that integrated a media player to the point that if it breaks, you have to reinstall your OS.  Does that computer still have a lot of the miscellaneous software that HP installs on new computers?  You might install PC Decrapifier and run it.  And then, I think I'd also run CCleaner, including its Registry scan.  Can you uninstall / reinstall WMP?

I removed all of the crap HP puts on immediately after getting it home the first time.

It's actually run really great for MONTHS until this morning. It seems to have stopped being stupid now, think it was just a hiccup.

Still haven't sorted out this media player thing yet though. I might just not allow WMP to be updated anymore and wait for MS to update their installer to the version I'm using or someday when WMP12 comes out. Not worth reinstalling Windows to get this thing to open & close properly. I'll keep looking for solutions in the meantime.

Alan <><

No. Microsoft MADE it so WMP11 can't be removed from Vista, and their "current" installer for WMP11 is a slightly older version than what I already have, so I'm screwed there as well. WMP11 can be removed from XP, and I know the process for doing so, but that doesn't seem to work in Vista.

Solve : hp windows 7 creating a recovery disc problems?

Answer»

new hp windows 7
I'm trying to create recovery disc and I started it and didn't get the dvdr
in fast enough and it started, you can't stop it once it starts.
So after it copied the partition or tryed to.
I started and put the dvdr in this time but I wonder if I didn't ruin the
part of the drive I need to make the recovery disc.
How can I check to see if the dvdr I had in there has the information
I need in case down the road I need it?
WOULD I just put the dvdr in the COMPUTER and open it at the hard drive?
Maybe see the files there?
I had w-xp before and I had no trouble making recovery disc there.  Start over...
Blank DVD's are cheap....Thanks Patio
How can I check to see if the dvdr I had in there has the information
I need in case down the road I need it?
It took 1/2 hour to copy but I didn't hear the disc running,Maybe it's quiet
I want to check the dvdr I copied to that the info is on there.
Do you know how to do that CHECKING bit?Hi!! What I would do is. Put your CD in your try, Reboot, Press F12 before windows loads. Change the boot from C drive, to boot from CD/DVD.
See if your PC will boot from your rescue CD. I take it RIGHT up to just before the restore, and then I exit.
Your boot sequence may be a LITTLE different, but it should be similar
If not, patio will correct me. patio is right CD's are cheap. You may never need this recovery disk but you never know when that old HD will die. I hope you have created a image of your drive on a external drive. If you need to know what files are on the disk, I can send you a screen shot. It would be better to just test it to see if your PC will boot from it.
I hope this helps and I'm not butting in.Hi! Screen shot as promised!! I would still see if you can boot from the disk!!

Solve : Very internesting memory/graphics issue?

Answer»

So let me start with this.  Ive been playing SWTOR since release.  Randomly the game would just freeze on me but the pc was still functional, so I would alt cntrl del out to end it but then noticed SWTOR.exe was eating up all my memory during the freeze. I would end process all was fine.  Well two days ago I decided to make sure there were no issues with the pc somewhere with a mem leak and ran a ton of tests, all passed.  After that I decided to run some benchmarks to see how they did. I went to run 3d mark and once it was done my desktop gui was off considerable and the PC was UNRESPONSIVE. I alt cntrl deleted out and on the blue screen where you can select options everything was completely responsive, I selected task manager, my memory was maxed again but no proccess were above 42k mem (my guess is scvhost was eating it up).  At this point though the computer became extremely unresonsive (10 min after clicking at task for it to register).  I finally try to log out after an hour of waiting to see if it would clear up and computer completely froze.  I attempted teh benchmark 5 more times all with the same RESULT.  The only thing I did notice is that as soon as the benchmark was over and the GUI became unresponsive if the first thing I did was either log off, restart, or shutdown the PC would do it with no lag at all.

That brings me to tonight, I decided to try a different benchmark program (pathmarks) to see if the same issue would be created and it was.  At this point I decided to try something, turn windows aero off and put on basic, and low and behold no more issue.

So what I know in windows basic 0 issue what so ever in Windows Aero complete shutdown.  Now I've always used Aero and originally benchmarked in Aero and never had a single issue, so this is a new problem for me at least.  So a few questions.

1. Has anyone else seen this before
2. I know there could be a few culprits, (Video card driver, Windows issue, memory issue) (I will say ive stress tested my machine and also ran every memcheck program imaginable as well as video card tests with 0 issues.) But does anyone know any tests I can throw at my pc to lock down the issue.

If anyone wants some hardware or software info Ill be glad to seen it, just given the number of possible issues I didnt want to throw out a bunch of information that could be irrelevant.

Im also attaching a pic I took with my Thunderbolt showing what my windows desktop looked like after the benchmarks.  Just to fill you in that wallpaper is full size not TILED so thats wrong, and my icons are larger than that and go top to bottom the entire left side of my screen and consist of three rows, so those are way off as well.

You can use Everest to provide the forum with a report on your hardware. It is not a diagnostic, it just TELLS what you got  in your system. Without details it is hard to guess what is going on.

If you want to send emails like your doing, the only way I know is to have Windows Mail as default. That's the way mine works. If you just want to email the site owner, copy and paste the link in your email! There are several ways you can copy things and send in emails. Take SCREEN shot then ATTACH it to your mail is just one more way. If your just wanting to send the link to SOMEONE: copy and paste is the fastest way. Hope that helps!!Set Yahoo mail as your default:

Solve : blue screen error showed a few times while in use, now windows won't load.?

Answer»

Hello there =)

A friend of mine built me a computer in September, and its never had a problem before, but over the LAST week or so it kept cutting out. First it cut out into blue screen while PLAYING skyrim. Then it did it just while surfing the internet, and today I left it on the desktop to see if it would do it without running any programmes and it went to blue screen after only 5 minutes.

I tried to BOOT up the PC just now and it didn't even load windows. The computer was on, but my monitor wasn't picking anything up!

The error message said something like 'windows has shut down to protect your computer from further damage', I can't remember exactly what it said, and now I can't even start up the PC to double check!

Any help would be greatly appreciated as I worked my arse off to buy this computer and I was just about to complete skyrim!

Thanks,
ROSIE. Xfew ideas ....

1. have you tried loading to SAFE mode, see if that gets you anywhere.

2. do you have a windows disc?Yeah I loaded to safe mode after the first time it crashed and did a virus scan and it came back clear. And yes, I do have a windows disk floating around somewhere.

Ok,

have a PC with win xp pro. Keep getting blue screen after boot up. REBOOT and it and usually 2nd or 3rd time will load WINDOWS. So I THOUGHT well why not reinstall with Win 7 instead of XP. Have it on my PC so thought this would resolve my PROBLEM. Because cause of corrupt files. But the dam blue screen is back. Same problem as before. Could it be because there is not enough RAM and it is causing me problems? Here the MOBO ASUS P4S8X-MX with 2 gig of RAM. Sorry I don't have the PC in front of me to say what CPU is in it.  Download BlueScreenView:
http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/blue_screen_view.html
unzip downloaded file and double click on BlueScreenView.exe to run the program.
when scanning is done, go to EDIT - Select All
Go to FILE - SAVE SELECTED Items, and save the report as BSOD.txt
Open BSOD.txt in Notepad, copy all of the content, and paste it into your next reply

Solve : windows update error code 80070643?

Answer»

H, can anyone help me to sort out this error code problem. I have discovered that it its to do with MSI software update registration CORRUPTION issues, I entered the error code into Microsofts search facility and have followed the microsoft solution please SEE below:-

1.Close any currently running applications.
2.CLICK Start, and type Uninstall in the Search box and then click Uninstall a program.
3.Double-click Microsoft .NET Framework 4 Client Profile to launch .NET Framework 4 Client Profile Maintenance dialog.
4.Select Repair .NET Framework 4 Client Profile to its original state and click Next.
5.Allow the repair to complete and then click Finish.
6.Click Restart Now to restart your computer.

Unfortunatly this will not complete as it gets almost to the end of the repair and then STOPS and rolls back, so I am now lost as to what to do as I have quite a few security updates to install.

Why not try Google BEFORE you come here. You seem competent enough. I'm sure it would save you time, waiting for replies to post etc. I found this

I can not find Security Center   or  Security Services   or ANYTHING like this?
Have you clicked on Soybeans link ??  That is what you originally asked for. It's CALLED Microsoft Security Essentials...

And interestingly enough it's right there in Soybeans link above...

Solve : Windows 7 An Improvement??

So far, since Windows 98SE I have seen only MARGINAL improvements over each succeeding O.S. Will Windows 7 be a giant leap forward? I doubt it. If you want to start a fire, say anything about Vista.     Same-o same-o?

I guess it's the same ol' complaints about Windows...even though, underneath, it's a different operating system then 98SE...I found 2000 an enormous improvement over 98SE, and I found XP an improvement over 2000. Not so big, maybe, but still better. The switch from the awful DOS-based 9x series to the NT based 2000 and later was the big improvement.
Hey, I'm not flamebaiting. I've had just as many problems with XP as 98SE.

Well, I find that odd since you declare yourself an Experienced user of Windows in your forum profile. Makes me wonder whether you've put yourself in the right category.  With, perhaps, the exception of Windows Millenium Edition, successive versions of Windows have brought significant improvements in SECURITY, stability, and addtional features.  So, frankly, I don't put much stock in your personal experience. yes, especially with the switch to the NT kernel in Consumer-based OS's. So, frankly, I don't put much stock in your personal experience.

Completely agree    I'm not putting Windows down. I'm just saying each succeeding system isn't a quantum leap from the previous.
Windows 95 was the first wide-spread publicly used system and very unstable from what I hear. I never had the opportunity to use it.
Windows 98/98SE was a more stable version of 95, not a bad start.
Windows ME was essentially Windows 95SE with System Restore. Not too bad, either. But a lot of people didn't like it.
Next came Windows 2000 Pro, my favorite of all the systems so far. It's like a scaled-down XP without all the graphics. I cannot figure out why thay left out System Restore. I guess it was because it was used mostly for businesses.
Then came Windows XP, purportedly the most stable version so far. A lot of fancy graphics which didn't add to it's usefulness.
Then came the slower Vista, essentially XP with a lot more eye candy.
What am I expecting from Win 7?  Essentially Windows Vista with a lot of the bugs removed and a lot more eye candy!
Richard Sherman of Smart Computing backs me up:
"Having used it (Win 7) for several months, my feelings remain pretty much the same:
Win 7 is Vista with some new features, most of the bugs removed, and a few aesthetic nips and tucks. It's nice, but not life altering".
Mr. Modem, Smart Computing, 10/09 P. 53.
So what are your CHOICES ? ?
You stated you never used 3 of those OS's and i bet you haven't even seen Vista much less Win7 but everything is wrong with the World ? ?

Sherman is a MS basher from way back and holds absolutely no credibility in my eyes...hasn't for some time...

However if you choose to drink the kool-aid...Windows 7 is amazing (The only systems I haven't tried are Windows 3.1 and 95. Boy, you guys are getting defensive!) Quote from: spock on September 12, 2009, 08:14:21 PM

I think 98 to 2000 and 2000 to XP were great improvements. XP to Vista was great but people complained because it was 'slow' on their slow computers and wasn't compatible. Vista to Windows 7 is just a speed increase with a few extra features.

Solve : Vista Won't Defrag Many Files?

HOW do I DEFRAG the pagefile in Vista, outside of creating a 2nd boot partition that I can boot into in order to move the pagefile to a 3rd logical partition in order to defrag that, and the C: drive? I now have 33% FRAGMENTATION. That should NOT be the case.  I don't care what any GEEK says.  My usual defragger is Defraggler, but I've also tried Auslogics.  I'm not saying they don't do what they say they will do, I'm saying Vista won't let them do what they're supposed to do, or Vista won't let me manage my hard drive so the defraggers can do what they're supposed to do.  What's the solution?

Solve : Picture's that were deleted still show up??

Answer»

Hi I have a windows vista, and for some reason some pictures saved to my C: drive, won't delete, but they were in a long list of folders, so of course seeing this I deleted the one FOLDER within the C drive and thought that that would fix the problem, nope, I now can search the START menu search and still see the pictures within there, but when trying to open they give me the ERROR: Failed to open document or trying to delete them: ERROR: the C:\users\users.. folder does not exist. The file may have been moved or deleted. Then it will ask me if I would like to create the file and if i click yes it'll not be there or it too can't be deleted. Thoughts how I could possible get rid of these pictures? How are you viewing the files? If they're deleted from within the folder they are STORED they should no longer exist. If you're viewing them from a Internet browser or possibly a program that caches the files it's possible that they may be in the cache or TEMPORARY folder of that program and you'll need to empty that programs cache. You may also want to run disk cleanup by clicking Start and in the search for programs box type "clean" and then click on the Disk Cleanup icon. In disk cleanup check download program files, temporarily internet files, recycle bin, THUMBNAILS, and temporary files.

Visual BCD Editor is an advanced GUI version of Windows bcdedit utility. It is the FIRST GUI tool to implement full editing of Windows 7/Vista Boot Configuration Data (BCD) store. Dual-boot Repair tool - automatic one-click repair for dual or multi boot systems based on Windows 7/Vista.
Accompanying Dual-boot Repair tool is part of Visual BCD package and needs .NET FRAMEWORK 2.0 and Windows XP as minimum.

It can repair the MBR, partition boot records (PBR's), Windows BCD store and the disk structure by simple selections and clicks. The tool offers automatic one-click dual-boot repair for non-booting Windows 7/Vista in the scenario of a dual or multi boot system with Windows 7/Vista/XP (and other non-Windows operating systems).
The program WORKS under WinXP, so that's good.

Solve : Need to change the boot settings of my hard drive. (I think)?

Answer»

Information:

Running Windows 7, fully updated.

History:
Problem originally OCCURRED when doing a partition of my main DRIVE.
Partition failed, computer failed to boot.
Attempted cmd fixes, complete system restore.
Found out through more diagnosis that my main HARD drive was set to inactive, somehow.
Set BIOS to load defaults and save changes, computer booted.

The Now:

Every time I start my computer, it fails to boot. If I go into the BIOS and load defaults, it boots without trouble. This normally wouldn't be a big problem, but my keyboard does not work before the computer is loaded (For those interested, Razer Tarantula). Getting another keyboard every time I need to restart is getting old.

So, why are my BIOS reverting to the bad settings on every boot, and how can I change them?

Thank you in advance for your time!Try replacing the CMOS battery on the MBoard...Part # CR2032...available anywhere...

Make sure all power is removed 1st.Will it void my warranty to replace it myself? If it's under warranty i always suggest taking it back...Fair enough. Thank you very much. I hadn't considered it was a HARDWARE problem.

Solve : Drastically reduced computer performance.?

Processor: AMD Phenom II P960 Quad-Core 1.80 GHz
RAM: 6.00 GB
Operating system: WINDOWS 7 Home Premium (64-bit) Service pack 1 (Original, on computer from the start. (Swedish))
GRAPHICS card: AMD Radeon HD 6650M
Hard Drive: 680 GB (388 GB free)
Antivirus: Avast Antivirus
Screens: The laptop monitor and a BenQ GL2750H (27" LED connected via HDMI)

I recently bought an extra screen for my laptop, my old one was kind of small to play games on.
It worked fine for hours but then suddenly my computer couldn't handle any demanding games any more.
In games i previously had a stable framerate i now had around 12 FPS which is very hard to work with.
It also seems to slow down in-game, there is noticeable lag between when i move the mouse and when the cursor actually moves.
Since "the slowdown", Nothing seems to work! I've tried with both screens, only the big one and only the small one, but ALWAYS the same sluggishness.
I'd be happy to provide more information if needed, but, as this is my FIRST post, i don't really know what to include more than what i have already.Edit: My graphics work fine when a youtube video is in the browser, either paused or playing.I don't know if it will have any bearing but i notice your reference to being on SP1. As of today (or within the last 2 days) Win 7 is updated to SP3. You might want to try updating that to start with.truenorth
P.S. I might have thought it was a graphics card issue except you believe that it is not. Also given it was (i assume ) working well before the addition of the larger screen and now it is not when on only the small screen by itself. I assume that when you are trying the small screen you have the large one disconnected? Quote from: truenorth on February 16, 2012, 05:19:59 PM

Did an automatic shutdown and on restart i was given the opportunity to show all the updates that had just been installed. I didn't count them all but i would say easily 50 line items. Mostly security updates but one was stated as SP3.  I'll try and delve more deeply tomorrow and get back to you.truenorth

Solve : Help? Getting lightening when downloading?

Answer»
  Hi you great guys!

I have a Dell Inspiron with 7 Premium.

I'm having a real funny download problem.  I can download just fine, but when I click 'open' or
'run' my screen STARTS shaking with lightening.  It stays that way for about 25 seconds, then
stops and voila - no program downloaded nor opened.

Last week, I thought this problem was confined to one website.  But tonight I tried to download
an ECOMMERCE program from an entirely different site that I want very badly and it's doing
same thing over and over.

Do any of you know of this odd symptom?

THANKS for any help,  Pennie77
Have you tried the same activity in safemode with networking? Desktop or laptop? What CHANGES or issues before the problem at hand?

Solve : Cannot free space on Recovery disk D?

I keep getting a msg saying low on disk space on disk D. When I go to free up space I,m told to empty recycle bin. Opening recycle bin I find it completely empty.  I have tried writing files from D to disk to free space but am told that operation cannot be completed because the disk is full. I am a total beginer and am completely confused. Does anyone have a simple answer. You are referring to the drive as "recovery disk D". Why are you calling it a recovery disk (what exactly is on the disk)? The Recovery partition is not meant to be messed with...
If you need more space get an external HDD or add another internal...

It's always gonna DISPLAY that because it is in fact CLOSE to full...this is by DESIGN.
