Solve : How to delete this system-created backup folder?? |
Answer» (XP-SP3 system) you may have to take control of the folder before you can make permissions changes. I tried that but it won't allow that either, not even as Administrator in safe mode. The ownership is with some "S-numbers" account that Vista created in XP during the failed upgrade. I don't KNOW if this will be much help but the other day my friend came to me with a similar problem. He couldn't delete a bunch temporary files beacuse it said he didn't have the right administrative privileges or something like that. All I did was boot into Safe Mode and I could delete them. Quote from: Carbon Dudeoxide on June 12, 2008, 09:06:01 AM I don't know if this will be much help but the other day my friend came to me with a similar problem. He couldn't delete a bunch temporary files beacuse it said he didn't have the right administrative privileges or something like that. As mentioned before, I tried that ... no luckSorry, didn't read the POST properly. I did a small search and found THIS Quote from: Carbon Dudeoxide on June 12, 2008, 09:09:51 AM Sorry, didn't read the post properly. Hey CDu2, this sounds very good and will probably work. I will tomorrow (or next week) visit my friend; give this a try and report back. Thank you!KK, good luck. The problem was solved along the LINES indicated in this FORUM. However, because of the huge number of folders and files in the backup folder that I wanted to delete, I took a different path. I used an XP Live CD to access the system and changed the ownership of the folder. Then made sure that this ownership was transferred to all subfolders. Next, I changed the attributes to give the new owner (me) full control over the folder and its subfolders. Then, FINALLY, I was able to delete the folder. Thanks for all support. Nice Movie! Move! Congratulations. What Movie ? ? I didn't see any movie ? ? Quote from: patio on June 22, 2008, 09:37:21 AM What Movie ? ?Darn. I meant Nice Move!. Where can I download a Firefox Grammer-checker. |

Solve : Vista questions? |
Answer» I have the ability to buy Vista Business for $24 for a DVD, or free DL, but I have learned over time to go with a CD/DVD. I have thought about getting it but I would rather have Home Premium/Ultimate because of the media center. I also was going to use 64-bit version. 32-bit software run O.K. or better in 64-bit (I doubt it)?It pretty much runs the same. Quote Or should I just wait till the next big thing?Peronally, I would go for 'the next big thing', A.K.A. Windows 7. What are you planning on doing on this new Vista? Quote from: Carbon Dudeoxide on June 17, 2008, 07:50:16 AM QuoteVista X64 can run almost all 32 bit software, and any software specifically made for X64 will run faster too. What are you planning on doing on this new Vista? It can recognize more RAM than the X86 versions too which is good for upgradeability. I will however say that not all hardware will work, if you don't have a signed driver then FORGET it if you install SP1 as it will never install. Just make 100% sure. Some games will also run faster under 64-bit - personally I would go for the X64 version, but I know many will disagree. I would also say however that if you're satisfied with XP personally I would stick with it. But then again, I am a Vista-basher - one with reasons however, not just mindless I-hate-MS stuff. The price is right... If you have located EVERY driver for your system then i see no REASON not to go for it. How much and what TYPE memory do you have ? ?...that may need to be boosted. Other than that there is a list of compatible software Compiled Here...I have 4 Gb of OCZ DDR2 PC8500 1066 MHz with 5-5-5-15 timings. Then you're ready...Is there a big difference between Home Premium/Business/Ultimate or are they pretty much the same with minor differences?I found this. Pretty interesting. http://www.winsupersite.com/reviews/winvista_02.asp (scroll down until you see the tables)Thanks, I'm leaning toward Business, but I would like Movie Maker. According to http://www.winsupersite.com/reviews/winvista_02.asp Movie Maker is only on Basic, Premium and Ultimate but according to Wikipedia Movie MAker 2.6 is on every Vista edition. Is that true? I don't need HD and I don't want to pay for better movie makers because I don't use it enough. |

Solve : Recommended Partioning Program? |
Answer» Norton no longer supports PQ Magic. I wanted to buy a new PARTITIONING program that has GOOD technical support and is a quality program. Many times when the computer locks up, and I have to do a HARD power down, I can't recover without taking extreme measures: removing harddrive and disk checking with a second computer, reinstalling windows, wiping the harddrive clean and starting from scratch. Chkdsk works only sometimes. Diskdoctor rarely works. What are the recommend partitioning programs for Windows XP? Also, if a make a DVD backup of the operating system, and reinstall with Norton Ghost, will that guarantee that problems with boot records, and master boot records will be fixed?i personally like Paragon Partition Manager 9.0 |

Solve : Help! My new customized computer won't boot up!? |
Answer» I just received a customized computer and at first it worked fine. Then, after I copied my files from my old computer from an external hard drive onto the new one, it crashed. Now, it won't boot at all. I can only get it to power up by using the on/off switch on the back and it'll run about 2 seconds and die. Nothing. Here are some of the specs: I can only get it to power up by using the on/off switch on the back and it'll run about 2 seconds and die. Nothing. Now if you bought it...and it's still under warranty...why not take it back to where you purchased it from...or call them and explain the situation. It appears you have done nothing wrong...as far as I can tell. Sounds like a hardware failure. Is it still under warranty? Quote I don't know how to copy a second copy of an operating system onto it because it won't boot. How do I do that? My apologies. You do not want to put another copy of an operating system on an external drive! I didn't mean to make you think that. I only asked because some people think you have to have it. You're fine.Thank you! Quote from: misslakay on June 13, 2008, 12:07:11 PM Thank you! Is it okay now? Nope. I've emailed the folks I bought it from to find out what they're going to do about it. We'll see. Thanks for asking. Ahh.. I thought its okay na.. Good luck, Miss Lakay! install again... i mean the Os, try windows xp service pack 2 or much better vista,. it can carry.... your system is so.... power! inggit ako....I wouldn't advise someone with computer problems to install Vista as a solution! (That's not a knock against Vista so much as the idea that if it won't boot at all, it's probably not an operating system problem.) Quote from: dino_cuyag on June 14, 2008, 12:56:56 AM inggit ako.... What's with all this stuff? Can anyone join in? Quote from: misslakay on June 13, 2008, 05:14:59 AM Some programs like Photoshop 3 and other software. After you get your startup problem solved, please be advised that you can't just copy a windows program and have it work. You'll nee to re-install the program - just the way you did on your old computer. Good luck!By the looks of it could be a power supply problem |

What are your computer specs? Quote and i have to reload everything Reload from what? Where did the media come from? Is this a recovery disk or a shiny hologram FILLED disk from Microsoft. As previously mentioned your system specs would help along with your OPERATING system. Seriously, I would need more info too, try and let us know what OS you are using, and what the size of your HARD drive and ram is... not in inches but in Megabytes (MB) and Gigabytes(GB)... Cheers my OS is vista but has been doing this before i put vista on, i have a 150 gb hard drive and 512 ram my processor AMD Athlon 64 processor 3800+ 2.40 GHz and its a 32 bit operating system if you need more let me know Please tell us what happens in detail when you shut your machine down. Solve : ms refuses to give me updates? |
Answer» I can't get updates from MS for my XP Pro. They still say I have counterfeit Win, but I downloaded a FREEBIE that immediately revealed my author. key. At first I just couldn't get an update on the media player, now I can't get ANY updates. I bought my Compaq second hand, and doesn't have disc or sticker. 1-888-571-2048By the sounds of things, you Have an illegitimate version of Windows and have used an activation key generator to generate an activation key. If the system came with XP Preinstalled, I think Microsoft gives you a free copy of the pirated software if you rat out the seller. I bought my pc from a private party, about 8 yrs ago. It was in storage for the last couple yrs, until about 5 mo. ago. When I started having a prob with my audio, I contacted MS. I had been getting updates with no problems, til then. Would be glad to rat seller out, if I knew where she was and remembered her name. I explained it all to MS. Looks like I'm out of luck and too broke to buy any right now. |

Solve : My computer is wierd! Please help!? |
Answer» I am using windows vista. I turned on my computer and it loaded past the green loading bar with the MICROSOFT logo but it stops at a blank screen with a mouse curser shown that I can move around. i think it was a software issue...which was?i have a usb flash drive with 4gb of space, and I don't care if I hae to reformat it. I guess I can get linux onto the flash drive and all will be glory again. At least it runs is all I care. Then I can get windows back on if i wanted to. anything?! I think it was a software issue but that doesn't matter that much if you can't even go to safe mode or at worst command prompt to get rid of it or do a system restore to fix the issue. I think the computer can READ the drive and is trying to boot it but it gets stuck at the empty screen with the mouse and there is no error message or whatnot. Do you have a set of Recovery DVDs? Quote from: Broni on May 30, 2008, 06:59:50 PM Do you have a set of Recovery DVDs? I did say that I did not have any installation media on hand right now. And no, I did not make a recovery dvd. So no installation or recovery at this point. I'm at school right now and I have to wait until two weeks before I go home and be able to borrow the windows installation disk that sits in my pile of disks on my bookshelf. So what can I do in the MEANTIME? I thought there was a way to install linux into a flash drive. I downloaded some files, and ran the boot.bat file to make the stick bootable but it keep on giving me some disk error please press any key to restart problem. For now, I'm just intereted in being able to boot the computer so I can view some pdf files without having to always go to the computer lab or the library. If you want to be able to boot a Linux Distro from a flash drive and have access to your files on the fubar'ed machine it may be best to build that flash drive on another machine instead of the one that has issues... Instructionsis formatting the USB required? When I go to the BIOS, I can see the USB flash drive listed under the the HDD section of the drive booting priority section. If that were the case, I'd just INSERT some windows xp portable package onto the flash drive and then just ask windows to boot from the drive. The school computers are all locked up in limited account mode so that I can't format the drive. Will that work since instructions said I should format and rename usb drive using FAT first and I see that usb drive is already FAT32 type.If you want it to work ...yes i would follow all the steps outlined in the link above. Also your machine needs to support booting to a USB device...check the manual. Quote from: patio on May 31, 2008, 05:11:31 AM If you want it to work ...yes i would follow all the steps outlined in the link above. Yes, my computer can boot up to the usb flash drive. I think I can at least, the bios has that option to select my SanDisk USB drive to boot to instead of regular HDD. All I was wondering is if I was required to format my flash drive before using. If it's already FAT32 you may not have to...but for something that's gonna take 10 seconds and assure a clean slate i would do it...I borrowed my friend's windows anytime upgrade cd and it had repair tool. I used it and it allowed me to use system restore and now I have restored my system to a clean point I made earlier. It works now! No more fubare'd system anymore! |

Solve : 32 bit and 64 bit dual boot? |
Answer» i currently have vista ultimate 32 bit (x86). i am hoping to get a 64 bit (x64) version of vista installed on a different partition. i am about to upgrade my RAM to 4gb and WANT to actually be able to use it, however, i want to be able to keep the 32 bit version in case it goes wrong, and also so that i can transfer the files from the 32 bit version to a laptop, then from the laptop to the 64 bit OS. Vista X64 requires signed drivers, this now cannot be disabled with SP1 so if you have any hardware using unsigned drivers they will NOT install.SP1 wouldnt automatically be installed for x64 i'm guessing, or i could possibly UNINSTALL it.. if you mean there that SP1 disables it but it works if you dont have SP1?There are no hacks, trust me. I've been trying for a while to get Rivatuner to work, and there's no way round it. You'll be able to access both partitions with either OS, all you'll need to do to access, say, My Documents on the 32-bit version from the 64-bit version would be to go to the correct folder. Programs will need installing on the new OS, yes. And look out for 64-bit versions, they can offer better performance. 7-Zip especially showed a big boost for me.Actually if you have the option to select the boot HDD i'd highly suggest seperate HDD's for this setup... For some reason 64bit hated the fact it's smaller cousin was around when i did it on seperate partitions but is happy as Larry SINCE i re-did it on seperate drives... Just an idea.thanks, i'll report back possibly later tonight (its almost 4pm english time) after it's installed (i hope)... got some work to do, i'll install SP1 after that, then vista x64... should give my PC and hard drive a lovely workout... and patio, i'm installing it on my faster SATA drive (over my small and puny IDE which currently has 32 bit) would that be ok?Certainly. I started out with a 160G Seagate IDE that had Vista 32... Then bought a larger SATA for the Vista Ultimate 64 Bit. I'm replacing the IDE with the same SATA and cloning the IDE to it. This BUILD has been a work in progress with a few hiccups along the way but i couldn't be happier at this point. It drove me batty doing it a little at a time because i found out that Brand New un-assembled components sitting in your room will talk to you and harass your sleep functions in the middle of the night. The more expensive they are the louder they get... i had exactly your problem... home built pc... i was just too budget to buy a new PSU... i tried to use a 200w to power a SLI machine... it blew up and buggered my Asus M2N32-SLI Deluxe mobo and my AMD 5000+ CPU... and my GPU at the time (i had 7600GT in SLI) now i only have one 8600GT cause i cant afford to pay for any more stuff yet... i still only have 1gb RAM though... must upgrade!!! aero is bloody slow with 1gb :|I had everything but the mobo set up on my desk, waiting for the replacement to arrive. That 8800GT sure was shouting loud, but the kicker was that it looked all there, monitor and all. It was only when I caught myself pressing the power button longingly that I got a grip. Well . . . not QUITE that far, hehe. Apart from the sentence about the power button it's true.lol btw, SP1 just installed fine i think the start up screen has changed... do 64 bit editions of windows give any advantage? One problem I see is the lack of 64 bit drivers although I heard there was 32 bit program compatibility somewhere for the porgrams and software.64 bit programs on a 64 bit OS will run faster than 32-bit programs. Also, 64-bit operating systems can access far more RAM than 32-bit versions. Almost all 32-bit programs will work on a 64-bit OS, but drivers must be specifically written for a 64 bit OS so they can be hard to find for some hardware. Almost all modern hardware will have 64-bit drivers available. To be completely honest i really had no interest in the 64Bit version...however in order to be able to stay on top of things i had to do it ... I resisted as long as i could but i must say that other than fighting to find proper drivers i am pleasantly suprised... There were a few drivers that OEM's insisted were written for 64Bit but this simply was not true. They would not run and i'm not about to mention names... What people need to understand in this process is MS is not the villian when it comes to new OS's...they released the code for Vista 32 and 64 to OEM's back when it was still Longhorn. If the manuf. didn't get busy and write proper drivers then it's ultimately their fault... As i said i'll not mention names. I plan on doing a full review once the beast is finished on what is good and not so good about Vista 64. Stay Tuned. so that means that it's not big use using 64 bit windows then. and Magic 64-Bit Vista Wonderland seems to have been a good program that allows one to use 64 windows without the compatibility/driver issues. If that is the case, then I'd use 64 bit windows any day. My AMD athlon64 3500+ would be happier If 32Bit Windows won't boot on it i doubt 64Bit would be any better... What happened that got you to that point ? ? Start a new thread with the details and someone will be along shortly... |

Solve : Corrupted File - Computer Crashed.? |
Answer» I've been having some issues with my COMPUTER since I bought it. It came with Vista, but I had put XP back on it. It's been working alright, minus crashing a couple times for a few days - apparently overheating and the such. on the second pictre linki, it is telling you that WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\config\SYSTEM is corrupted. When I turn it on, it's going into a reboot. It'll hit some point and then start over - my monitor went black so I can't see at what point that is. I don't know if the monitor itself is broken or if its because the computer crashed. I personally think it's because the computer crashed, since it was fine before. This is the way I see it... Apparently a HARDWARE issue is causing the problem...specifically the driver for your Netgear router: WPN311 If at all possible, when booting the computer...see if you can select the last known good configuration and attempt to boot into Windows. If you're still having the same issue..you may have to boot from your Windows XP CD and attempt a repair of the selected drive that currently has your Windows XP operating system installed on it. Be warned: Attempting a repair installation may result in the loss of data. So do this at your own risk. Another option would be to use the System Recovery partition (if still available) when booting...and attempt to restore your computer to factory default...in this case Vista. Again...be warned...you will lose any data on your computer, because the System Recovery will reformat the drive during the recovery process and reinstall Vista on that machine. The decision is yours...so, keep us posted. Quote from: stevejohnson1958 on May 27, 2008, 04:42:47 PM This is the way I see it... What do I do in the case that I can't find my Windows CD? ^^; I managed to fiddle my way into SafeMode. I'm staring at (but not touching) the file that says is corrupt. I can also access the drivers for the NetGear adaptor. The driver for your router may not be the correct driver for the operating system... Were you getting the blue screens prior to converting Vista to XP? You may need to uninstall and reinstall your router software and hardware drivers. So...if you can boot into Windows normally, TRY reinstalling the router software. Visit Netgear's website for the correct software. Here's the link for all the info you'll need: WPN311 Quote from: Saviour on May 27, 2008, 08:02:33 PM The driver for your router may not be the correct driver for the operating system... I reinstalled the driver. It was working fine for a couple hours and then crashed again. Same screen, but this time some sort of USB was in the error message. I restarted it, and it worked fine. Crashed again a couple minutes ago - I didn't manage to take a picture of it. Restarted it and got a new, DEPRESSING error screen. I'm thinking at this point, I gotta reformat... The error screen said that a bootable drive was missing, and directed me to Intel's Motherboard Help webpage.Have you attempted a repair installation of XP? Quote The error screen said that a bootable drive was missing, and directed me to Intel's Motherboard Help webpage. This exact error message would be helpful if you could post it...the blue screen message irq is not less than or equal too means generally one thing, faulty ram or ram sockets. Particulary that you could boot into safe mode or normally next time... it smells of faulty ram with intermittent behaviour. Try replacing or removing the ram you have installed and see if you still get the same error. If you dont then you know that was the problem... Solve : Freezing on new build? |
Answer» I built a new computer (my specs are below). I installed Vista 64-bit and once I loaded up windows the screen would freeze up while trying to perform a task. I was trying to download windows updates but the screen would just freeze. Sometimes it would only be for 3-4 minutes other times I would have to reboot. Since this is a new machine I'm not sure what would be the problem...is it in Windows? Did you happen to re-use an existing PSU ? ? Quote Does the RAM match the MBoard specs ? I'm not typing this just for exercise...answers lead to solutions. P.S. Is it This Build ? ? I formatted the drive and re-installed Vista and it seems to be running smoothly now. Thanks for your help. You're welcome if you need anything else just ask.Had a feeling it was an os problemHI Question: Windows freezes or stops responding frequently. Cause: This issue could be caused by any of the below possibilities. Software related issue. Driver related issue. Operating system related issue. Heat related issue. Hardware issue. Serious issue with Windows Hardware failure. Answer: This document contains recommendations on what to do if the computer frequently freezes or completely halts. An easy way to determine if your computer is in this situation is by pressing the Num Lock button on the keyboard and watching the Num Lock led to see if it turns off and/or on. If you're able to get the light to turn off an on, press CTRL + ALT + DEL and attempt to end task the program. Additional information about this can be found on document CHTSR. Otherwise continue reading this document. Software related issue A computer locking up or freezing is often is caused by a software related issue. If you're encountering lockups when the computer is opening a particular program, make sure you have all the latest updates for that program. You can find the latest updates for your software through the software developer or publisher. Driver related issue A computer lock up can also be caused by drivers. For example, if there is an issue that exists with your video drivers a computer could lock up while playing a game or displaying any other type of video. Make sure you have the latest drivers for all major devices in your computer (video, sound, modem, and network). A listing of driver related pages as well as driver related help can be found on our drivers page. Operating system related issue Make sure your operating system has all of the latest updates installed on it. Additional information about updating Windows can be found on document CH000545. Heat related issue If the computer processor is getting too hot it can cause the computer to freeze. If you have heard any abnormal noises coming from your computer recently such as a high squealing, this could indicate a fan may be failing in your computer. You can first start by verifying the fan on the power supply is working by examining the back of the computer and seeing if the fan is moving and moving smoothly. For all other fans in the computer you will need to either open the computer and make sure the fan are working (processor fan and case fan) and/or if your BIOS monitors the RPM of the fans, enter BIOS and make sure the BIOS does not REPORT any errors. Users may also be able to determine how hot their computer is by onboard thermal sensors. If your computer comes equipped with these sensors, make sure your CPU is not running too hot. Additional information about how hot your CPU should be running can be found on document CH000687. Hardware issue In addition to software, hardware can also cause a computer to lock. If you have recently added any new hardware into the computer, try temporarily removing it to make sure it is not the cause of your issue. Before attempting to remove any hardware, make sure you are not encountering this issue because of hardware conflicts by viewing Device Manager for errors. Additional information about Device Manager can be found on our Device Manager page. If you have not recently installed any new hardware into the computer, the next best solution to determining if this is a hardware issue would be remove any hardware on the computer that is not needed. For example, remove your modem, network card, sound card, and any other expansion cards that are not needed for the computer to operate. Run the computer without these cards to see if they are the cause of your issue. Note: When opening the computer, make sure you are aware of ESD and its potential dangers. See our ESD page for additional information. Serious issue with Windows If you have tried all the above recommendations and the computer continues to frequently lock up, its possible that Windows may be seriously corrupt. Try running through the basic troubleshooting steps for your version of Windows on our basic troubleshooting page. If these additional steps do not resolve your issue, we suggest you backup all information and erase and reinstall Windows on your computer. Additional information about how to do this can be found on document CH000186. Hardware failure If after reinstalling your operating system, or during the installation of your operating system, your computer turns off abnormally, it is very likely that other hardware is failing in the computer. Often this is RAM, CPU, Motherboard, and/or Power Supply (in that order). If you have extra available parts or have a friend or co-worker with a similar configuration that is willing to allow you to test their hardware in your computer, try swapping these parts to determine if they are at FAULT. Otherwise, you will need to have the computer SERVICED. Additional information: See our frozen dictionary definition for additional information about this term as well as related terms. See document CH000700 for additional information about what to do if the computer freezes. |

Solve : Should i reformat?? |
Answer» i have a 160gb and a 320gb HDD. the 160gb (the slower one) hasnt been reformatted in about 3-4 years... its had the same windows installation and its getting slower and slower. the 320gb one is much newer (couple of months) and faster (SATA). i have one *censored* of a lot of files on my pc (250 installed programs) so reformatting will be a huge task. if i REINSTALL in the same location, EVERYTHING on Hard Drive A is lost? true or false?True Quote however, i plan to install windows in a different location on my pc. i have one *censored* of a lot of media (200gb+) on a separate partition on the same HD. this wouldnt be effected by the install? If you install Windows on the other partition, the other one won't be affected. It's unclear still what you want to accomplish here...think about it for awhile, consider the info given and Post back with what your goal is...thanks carbon, i think i understand it all now lol. i'll back up everything on my current windows install drive and then have an empty one for the new install. Quote from: Carbon Dudeoxide on May 24, 2008, 09:11:43 AM know that if you install an Operating System over another one it will format the previous one, getting rid of all trace of it. Really? That's news to me, because I installed Win 98 over 95, 98 SE over that, and XP over that. It's called an "upgrade install". I used full install media, not specifically upgrade. Microsoft says: Quote You can upgrade in-place, which means you can install Windows Vista and retain your applications, files, and settings as they were in your previous edition of Windows. If you can see the image below, you will see what upgrade paths are possible. |

Solve : Windows NT Problem...? |
Answer» I have Windows Vista, and I'm having a problem. I have a program that I'm just about desperate to run, but it is not COMPATIBLE with Windows NT. Is there some way to circumvent that? Like a driver that can emulate Windows 95 or something. You can try running it in Compatibility Mode... This worked. The program is letting me run it.. Now I just have a problem with the program itself. You wouldn't happen to know about the details of Lode Runner Online, would you? =PIf you do, by any chance, it tells me that it cannot OPEN this file: c:\users\Tyler\desktop\loderu~2\DirectX\DXsetup.exe That file doesn't exist in any realm of my computer.Lode Runner, eh? That certainly takes me back. Did you move the game's folder after you installed it? That error points to a folder on your desktop. Is there where the Lode Runner folder ACTUALLY resides? If not, then where is it? By the looks of it, something either got moved/deleted or the game may need to be reinstalled. What I did was I took the zipped file, I put it in a seperate file from everything else, I unloaded EVERY file from its archives, and I hit Setup. Maybe it just wasn't meant to be... Thanks anyways. At least now I know how to use older files on newer systems.Do you have a legal copy of the game? If not, that COULD very well be part of the problem. |

Solve : Accidentally Changed SID?-Computer Messed Up? |
Answer» Hello everyone. I wasn't sure where to put this so I put it in this section.... Before I start, forgive me if this post is a bit long, but I feel all information is very important in helping to solve an issue, and I tend to go off on tangents, so please stay with me here. It seems I have run into a bit of an issue that I need help in examining, and hopefully fixing. My hope is that, through advice here I will be able to fix this manually rather than taking it in to some business to get it fixed professional (which also means paying them to fix it). Now I am not terribly knowledgeable about computers as far as the technical side but I know my way about pretty well compared to the average person of my age. As far as this goes, I know that the more information I can give you guys, the better. I am a University student and mostly use my computer for: University work, PC Games (quite a bit), and storage of a multitude of things, and basic activities like internet and etc of course. Lets begin: Computer: Inspiron 1520 Laptop from Dell OS: Vista HOME PREMIUM (I also have a 320GB Western Digital external drive connected to it about 95% of the time) NEWSID System Specs: (I attained this from the System option under Control Panel) Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo CPU T7300 2.00GHz 1.99 GHz Memory (RAM): 2046 MB System type: 32-bit Operating System Problem: Ok, now, lets not get into why, but I ended up trying to use a program that I was told to use called: NewSid v. 4.10 to change my SID (unsure what that is). In retrospect I probably should have found out before using the program, but I didn't. So basically, I am an idiot, this is my own fault, I never should have meddled with it, but now I have a problem, and I need to get it fixed, so lets move on. I used it, it showed my original SID, (I wrote it down on a piece of paper, its on one of the tables somewhere in my house if I need to tell you guys it). It also showed a new SID, the one it would be changing my old one to. So, I start the process. It says its in the process of changing it for about 5 minutes...I wait 5 more minutes...nothing, I wait 5 more minutes...nothing. At this point, I have the feeling something is wrong. I look up this thing on the internet. I find out this program changes your computers' SID so as to fix a problem or something like that. However, I also found out that it does not work for Vista, it is meant for XP. I also read a snippet from some conversation I can't really understand stating that changing the SID can have some bad effects potentially. So, at this point in time, I am more than a little nervous in regards to my situation. I try to wait it out and hope that it resolves itself, but to no avail. My only option was to shut down my computer, since I couldn't exit out of the app or anything like that. So I crossed my fingers, held down the power button on my laptop and immediately shut it off. I turn my computer back on. All is fine. So I think "Ok, thank god, I got lucky, I guess it didn't end up changing the SID or whatever". I was planning on reorganizing my computer a bit that night anyway, so I went to doing that. This was around 7pm. Around 11pm (all things are working fine, it seems like zero things are wrong, just as fast, no errors, nothing), I decide to retire to my bedroom to do some casual internet browsing while watching TV before going to bed. I unplug my Laptop, I unplug my external hard drive. I turn off the computer for the transfer (the normal way, through start menu). I hook them both up in my bedroom and I turn on my computer. I see at the log on screen that there are 2 users on my computer now, instead of just the one, mine. I am thinking this cannot be good. The other user is called: ASP.NET Machine Account It is to the left of my user picture. So I think...ok lets see what happens here.... I log in to my user account. What happens? It is stuck on the little changing circle (the loading icon for vista) for about 30 seconds longer than normal, my computer is pretty fast normally. Then, when it should start SHOWING my desktop and everything, instead, the screen goes completely black. However, my mouse is still there, and I can move it around. I just can't click anything, the screen is 100% black, I can't see anything, ctrl+alt+delete won't work, nor will alt+tab or ESC. Since I am unable to do anything but move my mouse around, I turn off the computer. I turn it back on, the screen comes up saying that it didn't shut down right, and I pick the option to run in safemode. I try and log in to the new user, ASP.NET Machine Account however no passwords will work. So I back out of that, and I log in to my User account. Thankfully, it works. I have no background, so on and so forth, the regular visual effects of safe mode. All of my icons are there, all of my start menu stuff is fine, all of my files are where they should be, and I can access my 320GB hard drive and all of that just fine. So I think "Well, thank god, at least I know all of my files and stuff are safe" ...because frankly...I have a lot. I have a 150GB Hard drive on the computer, about 30GB are left, and my 320GB hard drive has 40GB left (I was going to clean this out a bit). So, I decide to try and use the windows System Restore function. I have limited space apparently set for system restore, so the farthest back I can restore my computer is about 4pm that day, which is about 2 hours or so before I decided to use that SID changing program. It takes awhile to do its thing, and it restarts the computer. I try to enter my user thing (in regular mode, not safe mode of course), and I end up with the same problem. Black screen, but I can see and move my mouse. I think..well crap. I try it again with the system restore option I have on a program I use called TuneUp Utlities 2008. It does the whole process (faster than the normal Windows one funnily enough) and it says that the System Restore failed. So...in a last ditch attempt to see if I can get my computer to fix itself, I use a think called System Doctor or something like that on TuneUp Utlities 2008 that checks for errors and the like on your computer. It found no errors. So...here I am. My files are apparently safe, all stores and useable on safe mode. But naturally, that doesn't do me all that much good. Can I fix this manually? Or do I have to take this in to a professional to fix? I am assuming all of my files will be fine through the process of fixing this issue? Otherwise..I can copy the majority of my personal files (pictures, folders with information, college word documents, job resume, and so on) on to the remaining 40GB of my Hard Drive, although I will have to be somewhat conservative in deciding what to copy and what not to. My games would have to suffer but nothing a simple reinstall of each can't fix. If you think this is a precaution I should take let me know. I hope we can fix this issue through the knowledge of the people on this forum. I appreciate any help or advice you can offer. I also ask that you please try to use lamens terms when directing me on what to do because I won't catch a lot of the tech lingo I am sure. If you need any other information, feel free to ask and I would be happy to get it for you. Sincerely, Unreal030 P.S. - I don't know if this has any relevance to my problem, but as far as I know, I am still on SP1 or whatever it is of Vista. I think they recently came out with SP2 or some other big, main update, the first one for Vista? I, as far as I know, didn't get that. I am not an expert with Vista, at all, but if you were using a program that was written for WinXP to change your SID (Which stands for Security Identifier), the program attempted to modify your registry. Two scenarios come to mind, each as likely as the other. The program could have been in the process of changing your registry as if it were the WinXP registry and failed, leaving garbage or invalid entries in your registry under your user or user group (where the SID is stored), which would cause an abnormal boot. If this is the case, the problem can be fixed by accessing your default Administrator account (if one is present in vista), creating a backup of your My Documents and Desktop folders under your current username, and deleting and recreating your username with the EXACT same password (that is very important). The new 'you' will load properly and your SID will be restored, you will then be able to access the backup copies of your 'desktop' and 'my documents' folders and retreive your documents. (If your default Administrator account is not accessible in vista, you will have to log into your OWN account in safe mode, create an Adminstrator account, and then complete the above steps) The second scenario is that the WinXP and Vista registries are similar enough that the program either succeeded or partially succeeded in changing your SID before it was terminated by an error or by Vista's security controls. SIDs exist for the purpose of managing user rights to computer resources. When a user requests the ability to execute a program (Lets say, Explorer, or whatever shell is being used), Vista will check the user's SID against what is called an ACL to determine whether or not that user has the priveledge to execute that program. If you have an invalid or corrupt SID, or two different SIDs associated with your user or usergroup, you may not have the priveledges necessary to start many of the processes (or any of the processes) critical to running a user environment. I beleive the method PRESCRIBED above will also fix this problem. If this method does not work, you will need to seek some way to repair your registry or access the Recovery Console, and you may have to use some third party program (Like Total Commander) to reclaim your data. A format should not be necessary. How did you go with that process Quote from: programming_pat on May 16, 2008, 06:38:27 AM How did you go with that process What does this bump accomplish ? ? Quote from: PATIO on May 16, 2008, 09:37:04 AM Quote from: programming_pat on May 16, 2008, 06:38:27 AMHow did you go with that process It increases Programming Pat's post count (and nothing else). or you might attempt just doing system restore, which would restore your registries but that's provide you have some restore point that's clean saved. But you might need to reinstall newer programs that existed AFTER a specific restore point so that the registry entries are properly inserted by the programs so they can run properly and no documents should be affected. well..oddly enough. I just tried, for the [bleep] of it to restore the last good boot or whatever it is called in the advanced boot options. (F8). It seems to have worked. I logged into my user account in regular mode (i.e. not safe mode) and it worked perfectly. Nothing seems to be wrong. To DOUBLE check, so I would be sure what happened last time wouldn't happen, I told my computer to restart. Still works fine. So it seems that my computer fixed itself in effect. However, I was curious if it is alright to leave that other user account there. (the ASP.net Machine account one). Will that cause any problems. I don't really mind the small aesthetic deterrent it causes on my login screen if it won't cause any issues. I'd rather not play with fire unless I have to, know what I mean? Be aware that everytime you use Last Known Good Configuration that config is replaced with the new (even if unsuccessful) boot history... Time to start considering a solid backup strategy. I highly suggest Acronis True Image. Quote from: patio on May 16, 2008, 02:09:02 PM Be aware that everytime you use Last Known Good Configuration that config is replaced with the new (even if unsuccessful) boot history... Could you explain to me what this does in lamens terms. I looked it up on wikipedia and the wording just lost me for some reason. It doesn't want to click in my head. I think it was mostly the liberal use of "images" and "discs" Does it make a copy of your hard drive or something? Then can you store it somewhere? and then if your computer messes up, it basically is like reformatting your computer, but you get to keep all your files and the like? If this is the case. What if I don't have enough room to store it anywhere? I mean I have about 30GB left on by hard drive and 40 on my external. I don't exactly want to use that up for backup. Where would you store the copy? Since it would no doubt be quite large in size? I will definitely look into this, and thank you for mentioning it to me. Quote from: unreal030 on May 16, 2008, 03:01:33 PM Does it make a copy of your hard drive or something? Then can you store it somewhere? and then if your computer messes up, it basically is like reformatting your computer, but you get to keep all your files and the like? Yup. Sounds like you got the picture. Quote If this is the case. What if I don't have enough room to store it anywhere? You better make some room, if you value your data. Quote I mean I have about 30GB left on by hard drive and 40 on my external. I don't exactly want to use that up for backup. Why not? Get your priorities right. Quote Where would you store the copy? Since it would no doubt be quite large in size? DVDs? External hard drive? yeah do backup your files. It's important. Acronis Disk Imager helps ... your computer is basically restored to the exact state it was when you created the image. All files, programs, and window STATUS that existed for that time point in which the image is made is all restored. --- But you have an external drive so why not use it to backup important files? Say ... make a small partition in the external drive and just dump files there that you are sure you'd die without?External drives fail also...burning to DVD is the safest bet. |

Solve : Boot and Restore DVD for Vista?? |
Answer» I hate to admit this, but I come from the old school of computers when you always got a restore/boot disk when you got a machine. I RECENTLY got a NEW machine, and have not succeeded yet in making either a boot dvd or a total restore dvd for the OS (Vista Ultimate). After trying unsuccessfully to do this, just wanted to know if there is an especially good, step-by-step, article, post, or sticky that would walk me through both creating a boot dvd and a restore dvd? flipflopjd DVD will let you access Recovery partition, but you still should have Recovery disks for your particular machine. Broni it worked fine on my compaq ,that is the only reseason i suggested it,because TODAY they dont seem to give you them. Not like the old days. Thanks very much everyone. |

Solve : Using Movie Maker to make dvds? |
Answer» I made a slide show on Windows Movie Maker, and CURRENTLY I have no DVD burner hooked up on my computer. I was thinking I could copy it to a flash drive, then bring it up on another computer and burn it to a dvd. Will this WORK, and am I missing any details that you can think of in order to get it to work? I need to know ASAP because it's for a wedding dinner on Thursday.I don't use Windows Movie Maker but if you check in their Help Files to see if you can save a movie to FILE instead of burning it than this would work....all you would need to then do is use WMM on another machine to burn and finalise it. If there is not an option to save it to a file then you may be out of luck.I can save it to a file with a .WMV extension. Will this work?Yes. No problem.I save my movies as wmv files then I use DVD Flick (free) to either burn it directly to a disk or in your case, save it as an ISO file. You can get if off to a flash drive if your flash drive is 4gb or more and then burn the image to a DVD on another machine. DVD Flick encodes the wmv file so that it AUTOMATICALLY plays when you insert the disk in a DVD player. I've been messing around with making movies since Jan./08 and I have found this to be the best method for making a quality movie. it may be easier to save it as a wmv file and use windows movie maker on a computer with a dvd drive to finalize the movie...and make sure, the other computer has Vista, if you want to use WMM to burn DVDs. |

Answer» Hi, I have this irritating problem lately (only started having this problem after changing into Windows Vista & Compaq laptop). I couldn't understand what was going on until I realized that my wrists were hitting the touchpad. |
