Sorry Broni, I was not aware that the use of torrents is considered as stealing,?illegal. my sincere apologies. I am not a hacker myself, by the way. Thanks for all your good advices so far over the forum.Karnac, I would not recommend radarsync personally.  It always has at least one wrong driver.  It is very unreliable so only use it if you know the exact model you are SEARCHING for, unless you might install the wrong one, and a large mess of problems may occur, obviously.  What I would recommend, however, is the filehippo update checker.  It is right for me all the time and is easier to use.

Solve : trouble deleting a file?

Answer»

I encountered a problem I've never had before. There is actually a text file on my computer that a program created and it is 16GB   (yes actually GB). I tried to delete this file, which seems to be CAUSING an issue for the program, and found I got an error message that I could not delete that file because it is "too large". hmm. I have deleted several GB worth of files at once before so this is surprising to me but admittedly I don't think I've had a single file be that large, let alone a text file.

So my question is, how do you delete a file if WINDOWS says it is "too large"?

I have a Dell laptop running Windows 7 64-bit service pack 1

Thanks What is the name of the file?

And you can try an APP such as "Move on Boot" to delete the file on the next boot.the text is a log file from the program. I'm not sure that it's normal for it to be that large. The program had an error and wasn't working properly because it claimed that the file was still in use or something. I was hoping if I deleted the file that it would solve the issue but I think the program may be working okay again. I'm not sure what started the issue in the first place but POSSIBLY it was my attempting to open a file that might have been corrupted.NO text file should ever be that large. Try MoveOnBoot
http://emcosoftware.com/move-on-bootyou could also try Shift-Del.the program seems to have sorted itself out. I checked the folder where the file was and found it is back to a normal size now (only a few kb). That was such a weird thing. It must have happened because of the program's error. I was using Handbrake. After it was able to upload and convert  a different file then the log was changed back to a smaller size. I guess the other files were just corrupted or something and so they didn't convert properly and LEFT off a huge log file.

Solve : frozen pc :-(?

Answer»

Hi, my computer (not the one i am using now)  has completely frozen. I cannot use anything.
It keeps telling me 'Windows explorer is restarting' but it doesnt work. ive tried to run malwarebites through safe mode networking and this has not worked.

it's Windows Vista with up to date Norton (i cannot use) service pack 2.

Any advice on what i can do would be appreciated.

Many thanks

SamanthaI know it is heartless to say, but if it were me I would boot to safe mode, pull whatever files I could save, and then bail out and reinstall the OS from scratch.  It might take a few hours of reinstalling everything, but that's pretty much GUARANTEED to get things working again.

Running a virus scan in safe mode, as well as Malwarebytes is the best idea and normally cures things, so if you tried these and had not luck, you also need to consider how much time and effort you will waste trying to fix it compared to what time it would take to clear your hard drive and reinstall your Windows copy.  You'd probably kick into action whatever was holding you off of SP2, which would make things safer for you in the future.  Service packs are security updates AMONG other things.Hi Samantha,

Here are a couple of options you may wish to try before you do a 'clean install' of vista. If you can access safe mode in your PC http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-vista/Start-your-computer-in-safe-mode try to restore your system to a time before you had issues with it. If that doesn't work you may wish to try a 'repair install' of vista which should protect your current install and settings http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_vista-performance/windows-explorer-has-stopped-working-windows-is/8607105e-5ff5-4b3a-8591-a9258798ff75

The following link also GIVES some information on possible causes to the problem: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/937093 If you are successful and manage to get back into your desktop I recommend you run a full system scan for viruses. I must confess I am not a fan of Norton although it has improved over the years. I would recommend you consider AVAST. There is a free and paid version available. I hope this info helps resolve your problem. Please let me know if it helps.

Solve : How do free up disk space??

Answer»

Yes, hello, I am back. I have a question. When I turn on my computer and get to my desktop, it says at the bottom of the screen that I have low disk space on Drive D. So, when I try to free up disk space, the only thing I can free up is the Recycle Bin which has zero bytes. So I click on that and I still have the same problem. How do I free up disk space? I've tried SYSTEM restore, disk defragmenter etc. and nothing.  You must remove literally some media files or documents to another external storage, that is mostly unused ones. Download Treesize or Windirstat to be ABLE to identify what is eating up all your D drive. You can post them here for an image review. Now, I've downloaded treesize. How does it work?Open Treesize and under scan menu the drive. Post the screenshot only after the scanning is finish.Typically, if you have less than 15% free space on a drive defrag won't work.  And it sounds like you are very low on free disk space.  You may have run defrag but it may have not worked.  You mentioned temp files so I'm guessing you ran disk clean up.  It sounds like you need to start looking for files you don't need, or if you need them, put them on a flash drive.

System Restore uses a lot of disk space, so if you already have little disk space then you are making it worse. Have you preformed a Disk Cleanup ??The OP needs to DETERMINE if D: is his Recovery partition because if it is A) they are normally close to full anyways and B) nothing from there should be moved or Recover won't work when and if he needs it... If D is your recovery partition, as patio mentioned, you should not be using it to store personal files.

Just to clarify a bit, files Jack has put there could, and probably should, be removed, and then avoid putting files on D from henceforth.  Be SURE not to remove anything you did not put there, i.e. files that are part of the Recovery files.  Good clarification soybean...Thanx. Solve : Unwanted sidebar. Why??

Answer»

Just a question please. How did this happen?
Vista HOME premium. Computer running normally. Left it running when I went for a meal.(Not sleep mode)
Returned and livened it. The desktop came up with a vertical sidebar, with an alphabetical list of my C Drive folders. which could be dragged sideways to show more of the folders.
No problems. I did s system restore and all was normal.
But it puzzles me as a non expert how this could happen without any input from me.Could you please EXPLAIN what happened?
Has been operating normally ever since.
Cheers
Hmm...I'm not to sure why it would have happened, but I see why you would be concerned.  I would keep an eye on it over the next couple of DAYS to see if anything else strange happens, and maybe take note of what happened and when.  Otherwise, a system restore has been known to clear up a variety of issues, and could very well have resolved this.

I don't think it was anything like a virus, as a virus tends to be more malicious and major than something like this.  It is more likely you hit the wrong key combination, or a program failed to open or close properly.  If you are really concerned, you may WANT to run a virus scan to make sure nothing is HIDING out on your machine. Thanks for the reply. I neglected to add that I had run several virus scans which did not raise anything significant.
Thanks again. Will watch out.

Solve : Frozen on chkdsk how do I get out??

Answer»

I have an HP and the running program is Windows Vista Business.

I have been having problems with it for the longest, so I tried to do a CHECK disk and correct errors on it to see it that would be the fix.

So the computer RESTARTED and now it's only showing

Checking file on system C:
The type of the file system is NTFS.

It is just frozen there, I've restarted and retried it several times and have been quite patient with this.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

The problem I have been having (let me see if I can EXPLAIN)

It's been going on for a while, when I shut down the computer and turn it back on I get a black screen no lights on the mouse or on keyboard. Then I have to hit the power button to shut it off, then when I restart it, it shows the OPTION to start in safe mode etc, but when I hit start windown normally it usually goes black. I've been told to unplug the computer and clear out all it's power by hitting the power button continuiously, which seems to work but it does take a few times to get it going.

So today I decided to try the check disk thingy hoping it would fix that problem and this is what I got.

There are no lights on the keyboard or mouse.

I would really just like to get out of check disk mode and prefer to just have the computer the way it was instead of this.

Ps. I am a laymen when it comes to computers so please bare with me

Thanks for any HELP in advance. When does it go black? Right when it begins to load Windows? Do you see the HP/BIOS screen at the beginning? Does it give you a POST beep (single beep when turned on)?

Assuming you are seeing the POST screen and getting the beep, it sounds like either a failing hard drive or corrupt OS.

The first thing you should probably try is downloading the drive testing software from the hard drive manufacturer.

If that comes up clean, I would put the drive in another computer and copy whatever files you need to keep off of it, then restore the system to factory condition.

If the problem persists after that, it could point to a deeper issue, but let's start with those things.

Click on Start to bring up the Start menu.  The box right above the Start BUTTON, or Orb, is a search box.  So, for .wav files, you WOULD enter *.wav if you WANT a list of all .wav files. ouch, THAT SIMPLE....am ashamed  and thank you...

Explorer.exe – Bad Image
C:\PROGRA~2\SEARCH~1\Datamngr\x64\datamngr.dll is either not designed to RUN on Windows or it contains an error. Try installing the program again using the original installation media or contact your system administrator or the software vendor for support.

this keeps POPPING up on my laptop screen whenever i click on anything and its getting quite annoying. what can i do to stop it?What's the OS ?  XP, Vista, 7 ?

Can you recall making any software changes before this occurred ?

I would start with some anti virus scans.  Trinity rescue disc has some good ones, if you're up to burning the ISO to CD. Might want to back up your files (if possible) before running scans.

It could be a program or service.  You can also try disabling start up apps and non-ms services.  Are you familiar with that task ?

Does the problem occur in Safe Mode ?  Restart the computer and tap F8 key until you see "advanced boot CONFIGURATION" options.  Select safe mode, LET it boot and try clicking something again. You're infected.

Follow the instructions here.

Then create a new thread here.

The malware experts will help

Datamngr.dll is part of iMesh (an AWFUL, spyware infested p2p tool) as well as the MediaBar malware family. hm, good call

Solve : BSOD and computer auto restore problem?

Answer»

My Computer: Windows 7 ultimate , SP1, 64 bit, 4GB RAM, Intel Core i5, graphics ATI Radeon HD 5800 series,
I currently use ESET Nod 32 security, and this is always on last scan being 9th March 2012, and virus database up to date.

4th May 2012 -  I used my computer since midday, and around 6pm when my younger cousin (5yo) came over i turned a DVD on for her and let her watch on my computer for around 1 hour. When i came back she was still there watching not messing with the computer. When she went home i started using the computer and this is when the first BSOD began.
At this point i realise i cant login to use MSN live messenger also then followed by another 3 BSOD within per 30 minutes. Since then it has been BSODing randomly as far as i can tell.

What I've tried, uninstalling MSN, uninstalling Nod32, INSTALLING YourUninstaller. Ive also saved pictures and WORK file, and empty my Recycle bin.
But after a restart, shutdown or BSOD, everything is back to the way it was (back to 4th may 2012 - as far as i can tell).

What I see on the BSOD is SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION and STOP: 0x0000003B
and another time, something to do with KERNEL

Any help would be appreciated!!Download BlueScreenView:

Solve : Windows Password Mystery?

Answer»

I have Windows 7 on an HP laptop, 64 bit.  After owning it for a couple of years, I finally just yesterday decided to set a Windows password.  After doing so, the computer restarted, and a completely different desktop CONFIGURATION appeared.  My desktop shortcuts are still there, but re-arranged.  The task bar is now blank and cannot be reconfigured.  It can't find a printer.  The DVD player malfunctions.  When I click on Outlook, I get a new user set up screen.  When I try to click on some files, I get a WINDOW that says Explorer is not running.  I have tried to re-start hoping to get a different user or something, but the same desktop keeps coming back.  Upon start up I am NEVER asked for a password.  I have tried a previous restore point, but that doesn't appear to do anything.  I have a feeling my old 'setup' is still in there somewhere and I just want to get back to it.  Can someone GIVE me some ideas to try?  Thank you. What did you set a password for?I'm thinking you ACTUALLY happened to create another User account...this would explain all the settings dissappearing...
Is there more than one account at login ? ?Yeah, sounds like you created a new account and are signing into that for the first time, so things will be set to default settings again.  Under user account settings is there an option to enable the owner account again?  maybe it is just checked off.You can start in Safe mode and see all user accounts by name. Even the built-in administrator.

Lot of different things to check on this issue.  It's not going to be easy.

Bad power supply or battery... Bad power jack

Bad hard drive or drive controller (CONNECTOR on laptop)

..possibly motherboard

Find a volt meter and test the voltage output of the charger...Make sure the reading you get is not under what is specified on the charger.  And Then try booting with battery out with only charger plugged in.

If still doesn't work then:

You can access the hard drive from the BOTTOM from the bottom of the laptop.  Pull it out, re seat it, and try booting again.  It might just have a connection problem

If that doesn't work pull the hard drive out and connect it to another computer, to see if the other computer "sees" it.  If it works on that computer then you can bet the hard drive controller or motherboard has a problem which is pretty much the same thing since the drive controller is on the mother board.  If it doesn't work then the hard drive is probably bad....recovery data from it is another issue.

If you've gotten this far and have to troubleshoot further you'll have to take the laptop apart...Say so if you want help with that, or bring it to a tech. It's a simple fix. First, go into the bios and in the section for the device boot order move the network to the bottom and the hd to the top. Save and exit. Then replace the battery on the motherboard. It should be noted that lack of current flowing to the motherboard (due to faulty battery, charger, or power jack) can cause these things to occur. If there is not sufficient amperage to power the devices errors like this can occur.

I've seen the same error occur on other SYSTEMS (if I remember right) and I never touched the bios settings or cmos to fix.  But we'll see I guess.   i tried another notebook same brand says the same thing operation system not found???I'm a little lost.  What exactly do you mean when you say you tried another notebook ?

Solve : New system slow browsing and downloads?

Answer»

I have an Hp Pavillion m7570n. A new hardrive was installed with Window 7 Service pack 1 and Explorer 9 Intel (R) Pentium (R) D CPU 2.80 GHz Memory 2.00 GB 32 BIT. The first few weeks everything was fine but now I have super slow browsing and downloads. Everything else seems to be working fine. I have run registry cleaners, MALWARE and antivirus. In my DEVICE manager under hidden view/ non-plug and play there is a Null driver not installed. I cannot find a driver or start it. No idea what it is for. That is the only thing that I can find so far. I am on Dial-up but have not experienced this kind of problem before now. I just RAN a reboot from the Windows 7 Cd and I am getting this when I try to repair from the CD. If you have recently attached a device to this computer, such as a camera or portable music player, remove it and restart your computer. If you continue to see this message, contact your system Administrator or computer manufacturer for assistance. I did have a camera but have uninstalled it but there are to items that I cannot uninstall from it.
Thanks in advance
1) How does it run in safe mode?

2) What is new or different since the last time everything worked properly (ie, new hw, new sw, virus, ERROR, etc)?

3) NEVER use registry cleaners - they CAUSE problems, they do not cure anything. It is possible you made things worse when you USED it / them.It runs the same in safemode. The camera that I uninstalled is the only thing new since it ran fine. If I understand correctly the only issue is with browsing & downloads. I'd suggest trying a different browser. If the problem persists, contact your ISP Quote

I am on Dial-up but have not experienced this kind of problem before now.

This is most likely the issue...

Solve : W7 Boot/AutoRepair/Restore Failure - ? Rename drive from Cmd prompt??

Answer» W7 Pro 64 (6.1.7600.2.0.0.0 on HP w c300 128SSD at BOOT drive, - system failed to reboot. W7 start up repair failed; system restore failed. Earlier restore files clearly show the OS  (SSD) as drive c: All drives test AOK including the SSD. I can see the DATA and the OS from command prompt.

The SSD drive - previously C: now is named G:-- c: drive had only temp files - I deleted those, on the theory that the drive lettering is now my problem, perhaps caused by the auto repair program renaming the drives.

I tried to copy the system files from g: to C: with dos commands, including ROBOCOPY but no joy. Access is denied - hyberfil.sys.

I WANT AVOID a new install if I can. Is there any way to copy or move the system files from g: to C: or to rename G: as C:
 (and rd c:)??

I have the command screen available from a W7 install disk.

Any help would be very much appreciated.

Was Win7 originally installed to the SSD ? ?
Is there another OS installed on any of the HDD's ? ?

If no additional OS's are present power down and disconnect all but the SSD...boot to the Win7 DVD and run the Repair Install again.

Solve : Windows Vista Install freezes on a brand new HDD.?

Answer»

Hi, I dropped my laptop (Dell Inspiron 1720) and it died on me. I replaced the HDD afterwards, however after replacing it, and trying to install Windows Vista it always freezes. I have tried every option on the install screens. I've reformatted it and tried over and over again to no avail. I've looked through the FAQ's and haven't found anything about this so if anyone can point me in the RIGHT direction I'd sure appreciate it. Thanks.Have you checked the disc to make sure it's not scratched or smudged ?

It obviously wasn't the hard drive that was DAMAGED when the laptop was dropped (it might have been damaged, but there is SOMETHING else in the system not working too).  Try re-seating the ram (also try the installation with only one ram module installed, and/or one ram module in each slot). The problem could also be just some component or CABLE in the system that jarred loose on impact, but you'd have to disassemble the laptop to re-seat all the internal components...not a quick and easy job.  If it's none of the above, you're probably looking at a MOTHERBOARD replacement.

Just to be thorough, check the voltage output of the charger with a volt meter and try the install without battery installed.

How far do you get into the install before it freezes? What's the last screen you see?

Are you using the disk that came with your computer?

Is this a new or used hard drive?

Solve : Dell Dimension E521 Restore- F8 does not give option to "Repair your computer"?

I am trying to RESTORE a dell back to factory with Windows Vista.  I turn on the computer, push F8, and it brings up a new screen, but that screen does not have the "Repair your computer" option like all of the directions I have been reading say it should.  the FIRST option I have is "Safe mode"  Can someone please tell me how to restore back to factory.

Dell Dimension E521 Manual - http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/dime521/en/OM_EN/PY349A03MR.pdf of Page 57, using Dell PC Restore.
However the detail shows that E521 desktop runs originally in Win XP and you mentioned in Vista. Its possible that an upgrade have wiped the recovery partition. The F8 you mention is specific to other models of Dell and or operating SYSTEM. The manual instructs to press Ctrl + F11 during the early boot process. More info here.

Solve : Customizing the Start Menu (Windows 7)?

Answer» EDIT: (Windows 7)

So, I hate libraries with a passion. I don't mind them existing on my computer, but when I click on a link on my start menu (For example, Music) I do not want it opening the music library. I want it to OPEN the current user's music file (same with documents and pictures).

I would like to change this. If anyone knows a way other than editing the registry, I am all ears.

So far, I've figured out where it is located (HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced) but I am unsure as to how to proceed. I know I need to create NEW DWORD values, and I know it should be something like Start_ShowMusic, but I do not know what the exact value should be.

Anyone have any ideas?I found and briefly tested a potential solution in VirtualBox.  It is a registry file which seems to work but as with any registry edit, be SURE to backup the original keys and use it at your own risk.

Link: How To Disable and Remove Libraries from Windows 7 ExplorerThat did disable libraries, but I would still like to add My Music and such to the start menu. Any ideas?

(Also, thank you)Sorry about that, I mistakenly tested the user folder instead of My Documents or My Music.  Here is another link (this time, I specifically tested the My Music folder).

Solve : Microsoft Excel Error?

Answer»

Hi,

Everytime I launch he Microsoft Excel (part of the office 2007 Home and Student version), I see the following error:

and then office automatically STARTS doing its configuration thing...

This error message only popped up yesterday, have been using excel 2007 WITHOUT any problems for as long as I can REMEMBER otherwise.

The installer I have is the one I downloaded off of the official digitalriver links. Googling the error seems to tell me to either reinstall the suite, which I've attempted already and the problem doesn't go away or to go play with the registry to fix it, but I'm not TOUCHING the registry unless I know EXACTLY what to do.

Thanks for any help on this problem, glad to be back again. UPDATE: I find somebody's solution at the following link:

http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/office/forum/office_2007-office_install/stdole32tlb-file-missing/ba3e940d-d628-4334-ac89-5e8ac9878093

Should I attempt it, 'cuz I see the solution seems to be for windows 7, BUT I am using a vista? The solution should do the trick even though it's for Vista...Still didn't work, I tried the suggestion on this site:

http://4ever7.blogspot.com/2009/06/error-stdole32tlb-solved.html

Now, office 2007 works like it did before without that error message.

Solve : Accidentally deleted ffdshow/Icon Interface problem?

Answer»

First I'd like to say that I am a novice with very little to know computer experience so please bear with me as I try to explain my problem(s).

After having several problems with my ffmpeg in several failed attempts to convert some video files to AVI, I WANTED to delete and reinstall or download another program in the hopes that it would resolve the problem. Unfortunately I inadvertently deleted the FFDshow instead subsequently losing the ability to access or Interface "all" programs on my HDD.

Since I've deleted the ffdshow all of my Icons are blank and when I attempt to access any of them I get an error message "no such interface located" or something to that affect. I tried to do a system restore but can't since no part of my c-drive is accessible. Therefore, if anyone could help me recover the deleted ffdshow I'd appreciate it.

I'm running Win7, 32-bit on a MSI computer.

Thanks,

Archery_Lvrhi Archerylvr,

Are you wanting to view videos or are you wanting to convert videos?

For converting video, try the Freemake Video Convert. Last I tried it, my conversions came out with good RESULTS.

Regarding ffdshow, the FOLLOWING links seem to have information on where to get it again so you can reinstall.

www.free-codecs.com/download/ffdshow.htm
http://www.afterdawn.com/software/audio_video/codecs/ffdshow.cfm

Hope it works out, let us know  Hi 2x3i5x,

Please bear with me because I think you missed the point of my post.   The issue I have having problems with that's paramount pertains to not being able to access any part of my computer due to the "no such interface supported." and not the movie conversion issue.   The movie conversion issue I can address at a later time.

Again, due to my error in deleting ffdshow I can't access any of part of my computer from the c-drive or the desktop Icons.  ie, I can't run any anti-virus software, access WINDOWS restore, control panel, accessories and so on.  This unfortunately happened after I mistakenly deleted the program so I presume that's what caused the problem.  Whatever the case or problem, my ultimate and immediate goal is to be able to once again click on an Icon or a program and it successfully links/interface to whatever program necessary to make it work or function.

Thanks again for any assistance.

So I see now, your problems began after you deleted ffdshow?

See if you can get anything working if you boot into safe mode. YES,

I've tried to correct the problem in safe-mode to no avail.  The Icons are still white and can't be accessed.

Solve : can not download?

We recently lent a computer to a FREIND. We just got it back and were trying to download SW:TOR for my wife to play. We got a message saying ZOOM downloader is not responding then it shut down our download attempt. There are no recovery POINTS, and worse, our freind lost our recovery disc.
Any suggestions on how to fix this?First of all, uninstall Zoom Downloader with the freeware version of REVO Uninstaller http://www.revouninstaller.com/revo_uninstaller_free_download.html that also scans for leftovers and unused registry entries after the uninstallation...

It seems like an unnecessary add-on to use-most browsers already have an integrated download MANAGER. I wouldn't trust any other program managing my downloads for me, too. Your download should work again after the uninstallation...

Solve : Pacer .sys?

Answer»

I have a Dell 8300 XPS , Windows 7 Service Pack 1 64 bit. 16GB Ram, Video Card Nvidia GT 430.  WITHIN the last few day's I have been getting a warning in the Event Viewer that my display driver was restarted. I'm sure there was one of the ballon pop-out's warning me of the situation. (My wife is usually on the computer and probaly paid no attention to them). There has been no BSOD. I found the DMP file not in the Mini Dump File but in the WatchDog file (Don't know what this file is).

I just had two event's today. I used the program blue screen view and they both showed the "pacer.sys file" causing the error. The video card driver is the latest and ALSO the BIOS. I RAN the SFC verify program and it stated that everything is OK.

I attached the file's below. What would be the cause?

[year+ old attachment deleted by admin]Download BlueScreenView:
http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/blue_screen_view.html
unzip downloaded file and double click on BlueScreenView.exe to run the program.
when scanning is done, go to EDIT - Select All
Go to FILE - SAVE Selected Items, and save the report as BSOD.txt
Open BSOD.txt in Notepad, copy all of the content, and paste it into your next replySee Attached

[year+ old attachment deleted by admin]I asked you to please post the results rather than upload a text file, but okay.

Look in Device Manager - are there any yellow or red symbols? And you SAID you had two "events". Please describe those events. There are no yellow or red symbols in device manager. The two event's that I described were in the "Event Viewer" They both were Warning's Source: Display Event ID 4101. Display driver nvlddmkm stopped responding and has successfully recovered. I found both of these event's in the Kernel log file under Watchdog.

Both were listed as DMP files. which is what I attached after the two event's happened.Try re-installing your vid card drivers...or roll them back to the previous version.Ok. For now let's not worry about the event viewer. I'm have a little trouble following everything here - are there any issues with your system? Is it running okay?As far as I know everything is running fine. About 3 month's ago I changed video cards from a ATI?Radeon HD 6450 to the current card Nvidia GT 430 the driver's are the most recent.  I usually run the Dell support Monitor which scan's all the hardware and show's everything is O.K.

For the time being I can roll back the driver's and see what happen's.I guess I don't understand. Why are you doing anything? If the system is running okay leave it alone.I didn't state that correctly. What I meant to say if the problem's keep's coming back that's one of the option's I will try.

Thank you very much for your help!

Solve : Restoring To Factory Settings?????

Answer»

I've only had my computer since the beginning of March and have had all sorts of problems with the computer locking up while trying to do Windows Updates and installing programs.
Every time I think the problems fixed it happens again. I had to pay OFFICE Depot $60 to diagnose the problem last week and the problem came BACK a few days later.
I think I have something wrong my the Windows 7 OPERATING system since the problems I had started immediately but I'm being told to restore my computer back to the factory settings.
They said that this should fix the problem but I don't think it will and I'm paranoid to do this because I think the problem will be worst or start doing the same thing again right away.
Does anyone have any opinions on this?
I would really appreciate it!!!!!

Take advantage of the warranty.Office Depot isn't going to help with the problem because it's software related and it's past 10 days.
If they do anything they are going to charge me.
How can you tell if the operating system is corrupted?
That's what I still believe it is.Are you saying you have a new computer that only come with a 10 day warranty?ONE thing to consider is possibly explaining your problems on this FORUM so that we can give more informed advice.

All we really know is you have a computer you've had for two months that has an issue that you are being told will be fixed by a factory restore. That's not a lot to go on.I think I fixed the problem myself using a program called Advanced SystemCare5.
I still have an issue when trying to reinstall I-Tunes. (see-attached)
Anyone know how to fix this?

[year+ old attachment deleted by admin]Is not "Advanced SystemCare5" able to fix your problem? That didn't fix the I-Tune problems but I think it fixed all my other problems. If you paid for it, they will offer support for a period of time.  Don't know what this program does, it might be the one that has caused the reinstall problem.

Solve : Hard Drive Overusage?

Answer»

My computer has been acting very strangely recently. When restarted , everything appears fine until after about a day of use, when it becomes VERY slow. I pinpointed the problem to the hard disk when I noticed that the hard disk light stayed on continually when it froze. This happens every day, regardless of what I do. I have defragmented, gotten rid of thirty or so unnecessary startup programs but nothing works. Sometimes, after being slow, it spontaneously becOmes fast. I have to be able to use this every day without constantly restarting. Please tell me if you have any tips on how to fix this problem. Quote

Please tell me if you have any tips on how to fix this problem.
You have already done the usual ting.
At this point you must get a spare hard drive,
- if you don 't already have one.
Other things might cause those symptoms.  But never underestimate any symptoms of hard drive failure.
Better safe than sorry.
BTW: Reconditioned Hard Disk Drive is OK from a reputable dealer.

Life expectancy of any HDD is not easy to predict.  Some HDDs will last for years even after being reconditioned.
But when you get any warning - TAKE action! What virus PROTECTION do you have?I have Norton Internet Security.Try this:

Click Start > Computer > Right click the C: drive and select properties. Click on the tools tab. Under error checking click on check now. Make sure "Automatically fix file system ERRORS" and "Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors" are both checked. You will have to restart the computer for the disk check to start. Solve : »|£óÇΘª Weird Code ??

Hi all,

When i click ONE of my backup file FOLDERs...i see weird code like this τÇog+▀k.^Ç√ in the title.

Then...when i double clik it...it says "the filename, directory name, or volume label syntax is incorrect."

I created this FOLDER file by pulling them from my MAIN drive...over to my backup drive (made by Western Digital, which is about 4 yrs old)...USING Windows Explorer.

When i copied the files over...to my Western Digital Drive...they were fine. Later when i checked them...i get codes like «ùb╞₧d*p. e╡

AND THEN...when i try to delete the FOLDER...i get "this is no longer located in e:\filename. Verify the items location and try again."

What is this...anyone know ?

PS. This seems to be happening to ONLY ONE program that i am trying to keep a backup of....which R educational video(s) that play in Cantasia (sic).

THANKS in advance!

Sounds like your Western Digital drive is beginning to suffer from file system corruption. This could be the first sign of disk failure. You should run the CHKDSK command on the drive.

You can give it a try. If the disk is physically failing then nothing you can do will save it. A format might WORK or it might fail, and it would not prevent the type of error you have had.

You can give it a try. If the disk is physically failing then nothing you can do will save it. A format might work or it might fail, and it would not prevent the type of error you have had.
This is an external ? ?

MS does not external HDD's running Windows...

It can be done with a sledgehammer and crowbar but this has been true since WinME... Quote from: jcs on May 14, 2012, 08:50:29 AM
yeah...i just found out too...that this WD portable HD does not support Windows 7.

Why do you say it "does not support" Windows 7? An external hard drive does not know what operating system you are running.

Solve : Winows 7 Disk Imaging?

Answer»

Hi guys!

Not long ago I posted up here with regard to imaging my hard drive.  I got LOTS of help and have now sorted my problem but I think I have gone for overkill! (lol)

By that I mean that I have got hold of two HD imaging programs and I now take at least TWO image backups of my hard drive.  One I use is Windows 7's own imaging program.   Am I overkilling do you guys think?   I am asking, I suppose if Win 7 imaging program can be trusted to do the job, without using my Acronis and Paragon gizmos?

What say you guys???   Of the three you mention..
I con retinue to use Acronis.Having two images is better than one. Quote from: jason2074 on April 23, 2012, 11:43:14 PM

Having two images is better than one.
Yeah Until you have confidence in one, use two.
Notably some users have found the backup system did not work as they thought.

It is useful to have a spare hard drive on hand to verify that the restore process telly works. Do not do a restore when you not need it;. but use a spare hard drive to verify the restore procedure. Acronis can start from a flash drive. Or a CD. See if you can get Acronis to restore to a blank drive from the backup. This will ENSURE you understand the method and the hardware is right.

Look for Acronis Boot Disk in the documentation.
The other programs should have the same features. Quote from: Geek-9pm on April 24, 2012, 12:00:11 AM

Yes I have a couple of 'passports' and an external HD as well.  I have all the CD's that help install the images also.  I have successfully restored from both Acronis AND Windows imaging in the past, so I am farely confident of the restoring procedure.   I guess I am trying to cut my work down to using just one image maker rather than more.  It takes a fair amount of time to image the HD.   Win 7 is the quickest. Acronis and Paragon take forever! (lol)   I image 2 PC's and my benchtest machine every other week...
Once a month i burn the latest image to DVD and store it off site.

Worst case scenario of a fatal crash and i'm 2 weeks back as far as data goes...

Works for me. Quote from: patio on April 24, 2012, 06:13:48 AM

I am asking, I suppose if Win 7 imaging program can be trusted to do the job, without using my Acronis and Paragon gizmos?

Since Win98 days I have been making image backups; I used Norton Ghost 8 right through to XP. 2 years ago I built a Shuttle barebones (AMD Phenom, Windows 7 Professional 64 bit) and I have been using the built in Windows 7 disk imaging tool. I created a bootable CD and I have successfully restored from image 3 times now (when I needed to) and before that a couple of times just to test that I actually could do a restore if I ever needed to. I personally don't see the need to try anything else. I have 2 external hard drives and I alternate them. I never LET either image get more than 7 days old. If I ever need to I can mount an image (which is in VHD format) as a drive letter in Windows and recover selected files without having to do a full image restore.
Only reason i didn't and won't try 7's imaging is when Vista came out i did an image using their built in feature...
2 weeks later when i needed it (new build) it failed miserably...

Good to hear they did some much needed work on it...I would never trust a backup strategy that I have not tested completely on my hardware. I also tried Acronis and I could not get the bootable CD to work. It always froze. Maybe I was just unlucky. , The Windows 7 native imaging tool has never let me down. So we have identical issues with different products...
Interesting.
What i learned years ago is if you rely on any backup app and never test the actual backups you are a victim of a false sense of security...

P.S. It happened years ago when i also used Ghost...i learned the hard way.I have seen on the Web that Acronis boot disk failure has been a KNOWN issue with some motherboard chipsets... the problem I had was it would hang on "Starting Acronis Loader..." - multiple CDs, different burners, from separately downloaded ISOs. I also had a similar problem with Paragon Backup And Recovery 10. The solutions other than Windows have to use a customized/branded Linux boot CD; at the time I first started using my system I found that certain Linux bootable CDs would not boot; the Windows 7 DVD of course boots on my system; this disk also CONTAINS the recovery environment; it seemed like a no-brainer, especially after I had tested the recovery process.

Solve : Computer Updates and Crashing || Windows 7?

Answer»

Hi, I have Windows 7 Home Premium 64 Bit, Service Pack 1 and I've BEGUN to NOTICE a problem since I've got this COMPUTER.

The problem is rare, and barely ever happens, but sometimse it does and I don't know why. What will happen is, I'll shut down my computer for the night but it'll have to install updates. Normally, this is fine beause it's only 3-4 updates. But SOMETIMES it needs 13 updates and I update regularly. So I LET it do its thing but at some point, it stops and won't continue to update. Like last night, it stopped at 8, and no matter how long I waited. My cursor was doing its circle loading and nothing changed. Now, it's done this before, and I've waited hours, I've even gone to sleep for the night and came back to it. And the only way to fix it was to turn my computer off and then on again against directions, which when I did, it started the "windows did not shut down successfully" start up and ended up loading slow.

My question is, why does it do this, and is there anyway to counter it? It's always when I have 13 updates.Go here:

Solve : File access denied?

Answer»

Hi all,

I got a USB HDD which contains a hundred GB data of my old PC which was running windows XP.
When I plugged this USB HDD to windows 7 and tried to copy a document from this HDD, an error message poped up, saying the file could not be accessed because I did not have the permission to do it.
The file name of the document was green in color, but for other FILES that I could access, their file names were black in color.
I have changed to login as administrator in windows 7 but I still could not open the document.
"File Access Denied or Make sure the DISK is not full or write-protected because the file is already in use by other program or user".

Please help if you could.

Thank you

KittyI suspect the key to why the issue is ARISING is due to the fact the file in question was created in XP and now it is being presented in a Win 7 environment . Presuming that so were the other 100gb of the files then as to why it is only effecting that one file will require someone with more in DEPTH knowledge than i on the subject. However doing some research on the subject the site i am going to list seems to present an understanding of the phenomenon that is quite clear and does explain a method to access the file. So give it a look and see if it will help you and report back if you solve it or need additional assistance.

Solve : Outlook uploads and downloads at snail pace?

Answer»

Hi, I have Windows Vista and Outlook 2007 and have had this set up for years.  I have Norton antivirus, as well.

Today, I cannot seem to get the send/recieve button to complete the send/receive process.  It starts and goes through a number of emails and then hangs up and won't finish.  I've deleted messages in out and in basket to try to get it to work but to no avail.  The size of the files is not large - shows 246 KB of 349 KB at the bottom of page.

When I open the progress page for send/recieve it shows 60 seconds remaining but never moves the GREEN line to the right - so it is "hung up."  What to do?POSSIBLY your email server is having problems. Have you checked to see if your internet connection is slow generally?
I checked the SPEED for DSL and it is as fast as always.  Also, I have a smart phone with internet and it is getting lots of emails and sende/receives on the same email address.

I'm running Microsoft Security Essentials....a friend just told me to do that...so, maybe there is a virus on this computer (Dell Laptop).

DonSo, you now have two anti-virus programs running.  Is that correct?  Running two of them at the same time is generally not a good practice.  They can fight with each other and slow down your computer. Your web connection and the mail servers speed are 2 different things as Salmon pointed out...
Contact your provider and see if it's been a complaint from others.

Solve : Slow to connect to the internet?

Hi -
I run Windows Vista Home Basic  32 bit.
Last month I had a problem with getting a black screen for 1 minute and 20 seconds when I tried to log on.  A person  suggestesd I set up a second account and that FIXED the problem.  Now when I turn on my computer I get a background screen picture and after a few seconds the internet icon appears in the lower right corner of the monitor with a red X on it.  Of course this means I am not connected to the internet.  After 1 minute and 45 seconds the red X fades and I am connected to the internet.  It seems that I got rid of the black screen but still have a delay for getting on the internet.
What I have done.  I have RAN all my security programs.  They came back OK.  I have deleted all start up programs except  Avast.
Got ANYTHING else to try?  I can live with the delay but I just like for THINGS to work right.    Thanks for help.     Bob    Hi -

Solve : auto fill in?

I have a new W7 Pro PC just set up. In both IE 8 and IE 9 and Chrome, it has saved my user's name and password which is fine, but everytime I go to that webpage, it fills in the login boxes for me and logs me in! I can not even get their fast enough to change the user's name and it is already loading the next page.
I have uninstalled the IE 9 update, then removed IE 8 and then reinstalled through the control panel. Chrome, I haven't tried anything but remove cookies and history. Still no resolution.
Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks, LAMIs this happening with only one website or does is happen with any website that requires login?

You should NEVER have 2 anti-virus installed......If you clear your cookies using CCleaner the auto login won't happen...I'm not a regular user of IE or Chrome.  Saving passwords in IE has always seemed a bit clumsy to me.  Opera has been my primary browser for months now and I like the way it saves passwords.  I've never experienced the behavior you describe regarding sites requiring login.   We have a Sonicwall installed at the internet router to filter sites and keep our network clean. There is only one antivirus PROGRAM installed on the PC. I have already CLEARED all cookies and temp. files on both browsers. Will try CCleaner asap.

Do you 'log out' of these sites?

Yes, that is the crazy thing. I log out and it brings me to the home page, then fills it in on its own and then logs me in again!  If I close the page and then open again (while no other browsers are open) it autofills the login credentials without any help from me and logs me in as if I hit the enter key.Update to the issue: I installed C Cleaner through IE and ran it. That makes no sense.  You don't install CCleaner through any browser.  It's a program.  You just download it one time, which can be done with any browser, and then install it.  Once installed, CCleaner's temporary Internet FILE and cookie cleanup utility covers all browsers installed.  And, what do you mean by "looping"?Couldn't agree more...That's why I am asking about this here. It doesn't make any sense. I did see that the C Cleaner was cleaning cookies and form information from all the browsers, but I was reaching when I just downloaded it through Chrome because it resolved the IE problem, but not in Chrome. I even unistalled Chrome and when I reinstalled, and start the browser, it still fills in my email address for my gmail and my password and then brings me to my mail with no input at all from me.

I have come to the conclusion that I should reinstall Windows.

this is one for the history books. I will come back and let you know if I am able to find a better resolution.

It seems like google chrome as an auto sign in ?? As stated here -

Solve : Any way to recover clipboard??

Answer»

During normal work I wasn't suddenly able to use copy and paste and some applications gave me a message Cannot open clipboard. Is there any way to MAKE the clipboard functional again without restarting the computer?
It's Windows 7 Professional. Are you using Excel?http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/office/forum/office_2010-excel/cannot-open-clipboard/6a4aa646-72fd-4f1c-9127-c3e12bc9a4b3Thanks for the tips, but my problem had nothing to do with Excel, the message Cannot open clipboard came from TOAD and then it wasn't possible to use the clipboard anywhere, Ctrl+C, Ctrl+V just didn't work even without the error message. Nevertheless, when it happens again I'll try to close IE8 or empty the temp folder or other tricks described in the underlying links.
You might try the Clipboard Manager gadget for Windows 7.  You can get it at http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/downloads/personalize/gadgets.  However, it may be affected by the same glitch you've encountered with the standard clipboard.

The Clipboard Manager gadget RETAINS multiple copy actions.  This happens if a program opens the clipboard, but never closes it. Until the clipboard is closed, no other application will be able to access the clipboard.

The Clipboard API and how applications use it is basically:

the clipboard can only be owned by a single application at a time. Typically, how a program pastes is to open the clipboard, retrieve the data, and insert it into the document. Then it closes the clipboard.

If a bug or other problem occurs that prevents an application from closing the clipboard for any reason- for example, maybe there is corrupted data and it throws an exception or an error occurs or some other logic error- it will keep the clipboard "owned" to itself, and any other application that tries to access it will not be given the clipboard handle.

To fix it, one "simply" needs to FIND out what application balls-up and close it. As PART of the process termination, all open handles- which includes the clipboard handle it accidentally opened- are closed and destroyed.

On that note, I just slapped together a small program that hopefully can be used if the clipboard has this issue to finger the culprit.

Solve : Newbie with a probelm?

Answer»

I have tried searching on the site and I am still more confused than ever.  So I am sorry if I do sound like a broken record LOL.

Tonight, I went I tried to change the display settings on my monitor, the screen went black and when I pressed a button, nothing would happen. I turned everything off and reconfigured my last known settings. I also started microsoft's fix ya to try to correct the probelm; so far the displays will not change for me and it bothers me. I KNOW it's not the monitor (I have a generic flat screen monitor), it WORKS just fine in safe mode. But however I did notice windows saying that I need to update drivers and I did try to update my drivers but the microsoft fix ya thing told me that mine were fine and up to date??

So what is going on with this thing? I normally can fix things on my own but this one has LEFT me baffled. For the record, I have windows vista business, desktop computer not laptop.  Please help if any suggestions if you can. Thank you for any help that you can offer to me. It's difficult to understand what your problem is. First of all, "Windows" never says a driver needs to be updated - so EXACTLY what was the MESSAGE, when did you see it, and what did it look like? Second, The screen went black when you pressed WHAT button? And last, what happens now when you boot to regular mode? - it's unclear what symptom(s) you are experiencing.First of all, I am sorry for not providing more in detail last night. I will try to give more information in future posts.

Second of all, when I boot in "regular mode" (I do this with the hard drive), everything appears just fine but it's hard to still set the display settings/screen resolution.

When I try to set the screen resolution and click apply, the screen goes black for a while. I had to press the space bar to get things to appear on the screen again.

As for the message saying that my driver had to be updated, I don't remember when that happened last night. I do remember searching the web for an answer and most of the answers pointed to updating drivers. So that is why I had to do the fix ya from microsoft, which corrected some problems but not the screen resolution/display settings problems. There was a update (display/monitor) driver thing on the windows vista program (connects to the internet and finds the driver for you) but they said that it was up to date.

I have windows vista business 32 bit.

If you have more suggestions, feel free to post or if you have questions, please feel free to ask. I will try my best to answer them as much as possible.

There was a update (display/monitor) driver thing on the windows vista program (connects to the internet and finds the driver for you) but they said that it was up to date.

If you are talking about Windows Update, you should NEVER download drivers from there. The ONLY place from which you should download ANY driver is the web site of the specific hardware manufacturer.

Please open device manager. Are there any yellow or red symbols? If so, with which devices are they associated? If not, please go ahead and close device manager.

Next - I suggest you go to the website of your video card manufacturer and download and INSTALL the latest driver for your specific card. If you need help with this, post back and we'll try to assist.Well the good news is that there is no yellow or red symbols on the device manager part.

But the bad news is I have gone to the intel site and I have no idea on what to download. What should I download? I have downloaded two things (I think they were accelerators) and they just don't work. For reference, my current video card is Intel(R) Q35 Express Chipset Family. I also noticed that it's drivers for microsoft xp not vista business 32 bit?Sorry - here you go: http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareIndex.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&prodNameId=3459243&prodTypeId=12454&prodSeriesId=3459240&swLang=13&taskId=135&swEnvOID=2096Thanks for the correct link. I am still trying to download the intel driver but I get an error message saying that this driver is not compatible with this system. Any other suggestions? Please go back to device manager, then click on the display adapter entry. What does it say?

Now double-click on the name of the device - on the driver tab what is the date of the driver? It says under display adapter: Intel (R) Q35 Express chipset family
Driver date: 8/24/2007

Download and install the newer chipset driver.Forgive me, but I installed the two recommended programs that you suggested and nothing seems to work. The pop up keeps coming up and saying that the program was not installed correctly? I try again and get the same message.
