Solve : Packard Bell Desktop with Intel Dual-Core shuts down immediately?

Answer»

Packard Bell Desktop with Intel Dual-Core shuts down in two three second. CPU fan and PSU fan starts and shuts down  immediately .  Checked with spare PSU with same rating - No change. As advised by one EXPERT this could be a 'heat' issue. I have applied "Ceramique 2" - No change.
Please help.

Additional Info: RAM 2 GB, OS VISTA, No additional Hardware installed, This problem started all of sudden without any hardware software change.

Thanks.Did you have the computer OPEN and do something inside it just before this problem arose?

Do you use a surge protector for your computer?   Nope, I haven't opened computer. I am not using surge protector. Not using a surge protector leaves your computer vulnerable to possible damage from power surges.  The description of your problem would lead me to suspect failure of the PSU or motherboard.  And, since you've tried another PSU, the evidence is leaning toward the motherboard.

Let's WAIT for comments from other members here.Hi. Just fixed a friend’s packard bell laptop with exactly the same problem, it was a dead hard drive.

Try disconnecting the hard drive and see if you can get into bios.

I have a CADDY so it was easy enough to USB the drive to my machine to test it.

Hmm, I have to disagree.  A dead hard drive is not likely to cause CPU fan and PSU fans to shutdown.   Here's reference on 10 early warning symptoms of hard drive failureFully agree with soybean. I have another Desktop from Packard Bell it self only difference it is Celeron. I attached HDD of Dual-Core with this PC and it works perfectly. In other words this not at all problem of HDD. Hi. The way I read the original post was that the machine shuts down, so the fan CPU would shut down along with the machine, maybe I’m interpreting it wrong.

What happened with the laptop was as soon as you switched on the fan and hard drive would start then after 4/5 seconds it would just switch off.

I connected the hard drive to my machine and was able to access the files for about 10 minutes then the hard drive just dropped off of disk manager never to be seen again.

I fitted a new hard drive re installed the o/s and it’s been fine ever since.

Not sure your main point is.  I repeat, a bad hard drive would not cause the CPU fan and PSU fans to shutdown.  If you're still trying to say that, based on your experience, a bad hard drive is the cause of the shutdown, your logic is flawed and your conclusion invalid. When was the last time the CMOS battery replaced? Make sure the heatsink is well planted on the processor. Quote from: soybean on May 15, 2012, 03:32:23 PM

Given the information the OP provided., removing the HDD is  pocketbook procedure. Even if it is not generally likely, the symptoms say it is likely enough to warrant a simple test.

Quote

Whoever said this knows very little. or does not pay attention.   The fist post did not have enough information to justify that kind of conclusion. Later, he said he tested the HDD, which is a basis for making a conclusion. If the fan fails of its own, the CPU will shut down several seconds later. But why would the fan shut down? Which fan? Did he see the fan shut down?  If the PSU fan shut down, then it was the PSU that shut down, not the CPU.

I said it.  Surely, you know that.  And, I know more than "very little" and I was paying some attention to comments in this thread.

So then, you're saying a bad hard drive could be the cause of the behavior stated in the OP: "shuts down in two three second. CPU fan and PSU fan starts and shuts down  immediately."  Is that what you're saying?
OK, it seems that there is a little bit of confusion. Let me put my problem again. PC shuts down immediately. When this symptom arise first time, I opened case and I have seen that after pressing switch, CPU fan starts and PSU fan starts - just after two-three second it stops. Just as we shut down PC. There is no beep or there is no time for the any beep as it shuts down instantly.

As advised by soybean, I removed board from case and started PC with just 24 pin plug. In this situation both of fans are running. When I plugged 12V same problem started.

I tested HDD on other PC with EXACTLY same motherboard. Only difference is, it is Celeron. Based on this result, I believe that there is no problem with HDD.

I hope this clarification would help other expert to understand actual situation.

Waiting for further comments from experts.

Thanks

Hi.    My logic is simple, I had a lap top that kept shutting down almost immediately, I changed the hard drive and now it works.

From the op I wasn’t sure if he meant the fan was shutting down because the machine was shutting down, and I must admit I am still not sure.

So I assume you have tried to enter bios without the hard drive just to rule it out completely, as previously stated a simple test.

Solve : Unable to get Windows Event Log started to get Win7 back online?

Answer»

I have been running win7 Ultimate for about 18 months with no major issues. I was running low on space in partitions, so I cut some corners (in keeping my backup image, and restore points).  I solved the space issue (larger harddisk cloned using Apricorns DRIVEWIRE with no issues, a chkdsk afterwards also no errors this past week). However I have some OS issues.

Short of it is No Network ACCESS. I don't have restore points from before issues started. When I start up, I get message about unable to

FAILED to connect to a windows service
Windows could not connect to the System Event Notification Service service. This problems prevents
standard users from logging on to the system. As an adminstrative user, you can review the System
Event Log for details about why the service did not respond

When I try to start Windows Event Log service (still set to automatic, but not started),

I get an Error 1747: The authentication service is unknown.

I am in as a new administrator logon (same issue under my old ID also as administrator).

Trying to VIEW event log gives me: "Event Log service is unavailable. Verify that the service is running"

SFC /SCANNOW runs (as administrator or from REPAIR on Win7 Install disk CMD window) and says it fixes some issues, but still has issues. I am unable to understand CBS.LOG as to what files it needs (a find on 'missing' yields no results).

I am not clear how to get SFC to run from Windows 7 Install Disk win Repair fully (it runs for a short time and then says it needs to restart to finish, rebooting gives same message).

I removed WD SmartWare (installed accidently when trying to backup all the data).

I am Running Windows 7 ultimate sp1 64bit 8G laptop ASUS 18month old i7
I am trying to avoid having to install all the software and patches for all the applications and configurations. There are many references to this issue on the web. Here is one that provides many possible solutions. I recommend that you read ALL of them before ATTEMPTING any one of them.

Solve : Alt+Enter like action happens when I press Numpad 2??

Answer»

Hi, you know if you're playing a game like GTA San Andreas and you do Alt + Enter, it sends you to like a windowed mode? Well, my computer now does that when I press numpad 2 for some reason. It's kinda annoying because I USE a BIND TOOL so I can do commands easier and it does that to my game. It never did this before so I was wondering if I may be able to turn it off some how?Make two or more user accounts on you computer.
Each account will have the preferences you need for specific applications.Well, I've only ever had one account and it never gave me this problem before. I'm using auto hotkey and randomly, it started doing this. I thought it was because I installed software for my wireless keyboard but it hasn't made a difference.

Solve : Computer (battery) turned off and now my sound doesn't work!!?

Answer»

For about 2 weeks ago my battery on the computer (ASUS Eee PC) got low and the computer turned off. When I turned it on again the SOUND on the computer didn't work, the sound symbole on the right corner on the bottom has a red X sign. I've just recovered my computer to fabric-new and the sound still doesn't work and the red X symbole is still there. I don't know what to do?

PS. When clicking on the sound symbole with the red X on the right corner in the bottom it says "identifying problem..." and then it says that it couldn't identify the problem...PS. My webcam on the computer doesn't work either after that.On control panel it says "no device" and when I deleted RealTek and downloaded it again it still doesn't work!! Pls HELP  Without knowing specifically which model of the EeePC you have, all I could suggest is CHECKING the BIOS and making sure the integrated DEVICES are still enabled. How do I check the BIOS to check if the integrated devices are enabled? It's a ASUS Eee PC 1005PXTap the "F2" key as the computer is booting. That should get you into the BIOS.

Solve : System Protection not creating restore points?

Answer»

Hi.
About three weeks ago I got a 2 TB hard drive. I used EaseUS partition master to cloan my old hard drive which was 320 GB. EaseUS copied the partitions on my old hard drive exactly like it was. So I resized my 298 GB partition to 800 GB. So Until now I've noticed that System Protection is not creating restore points.
I looked at system protection in system property's and found A previous partition called Windows 7 but it said "(missing)" after the name. It was enabled.

What I tried:
I enabled the system partition which was disabled
I tried to change the size on the how much space can restore points USE because it is on 0%. But I got the error (see attached picture below)
I ran SFC /scanno And found no problems.
Any thing else I can try, I don't want to reformat And start from scratch.

Thanks,
Carlos

[year+ old attachment deleted by admin]I'm not a fan of system restore. Sure, it's great when it works, but too often it fails when you need it most. Personally, I disable it on all systems and I always recommend that ALL users should use Disc Imaging software on a regular basis.I don't use it much, because I use comodo backup to make a partition image of my c: drive. I guess I'll leave it disabled.

Carlospersonally i use a great little program called macrium reflect, which is drive imaging software that works like a back-up partition in a factory PC. I simply create a rescue Cd. create my clone using an external drive, when i need it i boot off the Cd retrieve my clone and it does the rest. You can GET a freeware VERSION which has a few features turned off, or pay for the full version. I personally use the freeware cause i DONT need nothing fancy but here have yourself a look. i LOVE it.....

Solve : taskbar not hiding in windows 7?

Answer»

I have discovered that the FIREFOX DOWNLOADS screen (list of recent downloads) is the cause.  by closing this it frees up the task BAR. Quote from: topsy99 on May 25, 2012, 11:40:03 PM

I have discovered that the Firefox downloads screen (list of recent downloads) is the cause.  by closing this it frees up the task bar.
So, you want to use the Auto-hide feature for the taskbar but the taskbar does not hide while the Firefox downloads screen is displayed.  Is that it?

If that's the case, your computer is mis-behaving.  I can enable the taskbar Auto-hide feature and it is not affected by a Firefox download screen being OPEN.

Maybe you should scan for viruses and malware.

Solve : Bluetooth problem: can't receive/send files to/from my laptop??

Answer»

when i click on the bluetooth icon, the only options that are given are: add a device, show bluetooth devices, join a personal area network, open SETTINGS, turn adapter off, remove icon. I can successfully add a device (cell PHONE) and vice versa but sending files from or to my laptop, total fail T_T i don't know what to do. I OPENED the settings to my bluetooth. I checked the ff. boxes :allow bluetooth devices to find this computer, allow bluetooth devices to connect to this computer,
alert me when a new bluetooth device wants to connect, allow remote devices to browse, send, and RECEIVE picture, music, and other files. It would help if you posted both the computer and cellphone models you are using. On some laptops, the wifi and bluetooth are integrated in function by turning on the RADIO button. When either is turned off on both the computer or cellphone, the discovery or auto function when in range is not carried.

Solve : Mp3 On Flash Drive Won't Play?

Answer»

I just copied a bunch of mp3's to my new flash, edited the file by the title of the song so they would be more easily found on the flash. Then copied the flash to the hard drive as a back up COPY, now W7 media player won't play the song, either on the flash or the pc. The Windows player just comes up with an error screen that it can't play the song. These same songs play fine on the pc from various other folders, so I think the mp3 file is OK. So what happened! The flash copies fine and shows to be FAT. And then the flash copy to the hd won't play either. I also tried using VLC player and it too won't play. Both of these players work perfectly on all of my other music and videos. All input is appreciated. Do you still have the original files? Do lithe originals work OK?YES!  I have the originals in the same folder and they all work just fine with either player.  There are 312 songs in this flash which I had edited the song title so they would be alphabetic in their folder.  That's all I did.  RENAMING a file should be harmless. Unless somehow the extension got changed. Also, renaming a file invokes permission issues.

I think you lost the extension when you renamed the files.

Can you provide some more details?  Why did you have to rename the files to build a list? You can make a list of files without actually renaming the files shirtsleeves. In fact, you can have multiple lists of the files by categories. These are called playlists. Or. you can have a folder of shortcuts. Or even shortcuts without a folder. You can rename shortcuts.
Suppose you have a song named:
I Love The Rain, Alice Cooper
In the came folder you could create a number of shortcuts to the same file and rename each.
Shortcut  I Love The Rain, Alice Cooper(1)
Cooper, Alice - I love the tain
Alice cooper, I L Love The Rain
Rain, I love - Alice Cooper

Just a suggestion. Renaming a shortcut does not risk the original file. An it is more versatile.

Hey GEEK - thanks for your help here.  I edited the song names to the title so that I could easily browse the folder (flash or hd) in case I was looking for a particular song for some reason.  Most of them had the artist first, or a track number.  This is my first time doing this with W7 but the process seemed to be no different than when I've done this with XP.  I just edited the MP3 file name for the song title.  I don't know anything about permissions either.  I've done this before in XP and no problems.  I sure would hate to go back again through all of these songs (312) to make a new folder for my flash.  I use the flash in the car radio, or can pull it out and use it in my portable MP3 player with speakers.  By looking at a particular MP3 file, what do I look for to see if, and what might be corrupted?  Your input is appreciated.

JimSelect a song, right click, then select properties.  It should show the type of file. If it is not identified as a MP3 file, you did something bother than change the file name.

Here is the file and it looks OK to me.

[YEAR+ old attachment deleted by admin]That looks good and and it is in your desktop. It plays OK?
Does the file have the same properties when you look in the USB flash drive? Did the properties change?
What error message do you get when you try to play the file in the USB drive with VLC?
Does the USB flash play in your computer but not in your card radio?
Here's an update on this mess.  The flash plays just fine in the MP3 as well as the car radio.  I copied the entire flash files to a temporary file on the desk top and they DO NOT PLAY.  I copied one of the songs from the hd to the temporary file and of course the song played.  So there must be something wrong with the files on the flash that the players don't like.  The files still show MP3 format on the flash.  I guess I'll just copy the entire MP3 folder to the flash and forget about editing the files.  The editing just makes it so much easier to watch for duplicates or to locate a particular song.  I'll hold off a bit in case you have any ideas on this mess.

JimPick 10 songs...

Format the flash drive.

Move those to the flash drive.

Then rename them and see if they play.

Solve : Windows & Professional OS?

Answer»

Can I use [System RESERVED] for backup or file storage? Because Windows 7 won't use it for BitLocker. It's only 100 MB, what would be the point?
Buy another hard drive. Save time. Save you sanity. Its better if you don't. It is an unencrypted portion of the drive, and some programs do not function well with an encrypted volume, so as such, they need a small area reserved to read/write to that is not. This is why you cannot use it for bitlocker.

Its a bit like those hidden "RESTORE" partitions or a swap file. Windows reserves some things for its own uses, and those things are not intended for user level interaction. Messing with them or causing changes in there on your own can cause all kinds of things to act unpredictably or even break all together. Consider it a part of the price that is paid for using windows, if you must.

And, again, as another poster mentioned, its usually a very small space to begin with, you wouldn't gain much by using it for storage. Quote from: seek3r on May 28, 2012, 01:26:57 PM

If it's unencrypted how would there be problems with applications that do not work with encrypted volumes?

[year+ old attachment deleted by admin]The most common cause for that ERROR is faulty RAM. It could be other things though, like a dying power supply for example.

Probably not.

If the error only happened once, I wouldn't worry about it too much. If it happens again, come back and we can tell you how to proceed. A page fault has little or NOTHING to do with your pagefile in most instances...the BSOD hasn't happened again. I'll report back if it ever happens again.

Solve : Please help with batch or VBS file?

Hello folks, I really need some help.  I have been trying a number of ways but do not have ENOUGH experience or knowledge of the code for this.  I am trying to create a BATCH file or VBS file that can change this:

C:\Downloads\Albums\Work Folder\Album - March\Multiple .jpg images
C:\Downloads\Albums\Work Folder\Album - April\Multiple .jpg images

Of course, I am working with WAY more than just 4 folders.  I am looking to basically get rid of the Random Junk Subfolder and move the multiple jpegs up.  Icing on the cake would be to include the deletion of the Random Junk Subfolder if possible.

I have, in the past, created some VERY BASIC .bat files, but I do not know enough knowledge of the code to perform this type of task.  Thank you greatly in advance for any help you can provide.

Solve : Help recovering word document?

Answer»

Hello, I have been working on a master's project in Word and have had various versions going; last night I made all my corrections on one version and saved it, then opened it this AFTERNOON and finished everything and thought I had saved it again before emailing it to my prof, but the emailed version turns out to be from 2 days again and this is now the only version showing up on my computer! Even if I mistook and didn't SAVE TODAY, there should still be last night's version, but it's not there. I have already tried looking through all the other documents and autorecovery files (empty). Does anyone have any other ideas for recovering a DOCUMENT in this situation? If I could even recover last night's version it would save a lot of work.... Thanks!Might you have saved one version is a different folder?  Have you tried a search for all Word files on your hard drive, using *.doc (or *.docx if Office 2007) as the search string?  Did you ever have a flash drive or external drive connected to your computer?  What version of Word do you have?I've been searching in all documents and folders...  in the list of documents theoretically it should come up as the most recently modified document, but I'm not getting anything that was modified yesterday or today. I'm not sure what version of word I have, but my computer is barely a year old so  I imagine it's pretty new...What technique are you using to search?  When you open Word, it initially displays a flash screen which shows Word 2003, Word 2007, etc.   Also, with most versions, you can click on Help, then select About Microsoft Office Word to see the version. What version of Windows are you using?Hmmm, looks like I have Windows Vista and Word 2002... I've been searching by putting .doc in the search field, and then putting them in order by most recently modified but it still just comes up with the same versions from 2 days ago! I know that a version got saved last night... there were two other people who saw the save button get pushed, and it was there this morning... but I'm not finding that one either, which is bizarre. You might try File Search Assistant; you can download it and use it on a trial basis for 30 days; after that, you would need to PAY for it.  I haven't actually used it; I found it via a Google search.  Other than using a third-party search tool such as this, I'm not sure what to suggest.

Solve : Bob-PC (D:) is nearly full. What to do??

Answer»

I am running VISTA Home Basic on an E Machine.  I have been having troubles, including not being able to restore and low space on the D drive.  I tried several things but nothing seems to help.  I decided to get a full factory recovery and start all over.  I did this after which I deleted all the programs I don't use which are quite a lot.  I now have 26 programs.  I have ran Ccleaner and disk cleaner.  I thought this would reduce the space that is being used in D drive.  Not so.  I now have 27.5 MB free of 8.36 GB in Bob-PC (D:).  Needless to say I am getting low space messages.  The only thing that is in the D drive is  "RECOVERY" .  What do I do now?  Thanks for help.   Bobdo you have an external hard disk? if so copy your recovery to that.Potere scuro -
Thanks for your reply but I do not have an external hard drive.  I use the computer for fun.  I play jigsaw puzzles, get news, weather reports, check the stock market, etc.  I have resisted extra things like external DRIVES and such because I don't know to use them and I don't have anybody to teach me.  I have learned a lot from FORUMS like this one.   Bobthey are very easy to use and if you stuck im sure someoneon here would be more than happy to help you.
Do you have important info on this computer? Unfortunately you have a very low hard drive for today's programmes. You seem to be Ice skating up hill.  The more programmes you add to clear the problem the more space you are taking. I'm not exactly clear what it is you want to do?? You need to upgrade plain and simple.Mulreay -
I have not added programs.  I have deleted programs.  I agree that I need to upgrade but how?  I have a page from Gateway (they make E Machines) that tell what to do for low space on drive D but It did not help.  They said get rid of unused programs, which I did.  I am not too smart about computers but I will try to follow any suggestions.  Bob Quote from: potere scuro on June 11, 2009, 12:38:01 PM

Do you have important info on this computer?
Do you realise that deleting a programme does not fully get rid of it? Have you done a 'disk cleanup' and a (de-frag)?Potere Scuro -
What kind of information do you want?  It is  32 bit .  The processor : Intel(R)
Celeron(R) D CPU 3.33GHz   Memory  1.49 GBMulreay -
I did a disk clean up on both the C & D drives.  I started a defag but it ran so long I gave up.  I did delete one temp file from D drive but it was listed as ) bytes so that did no good.     I also have a page titled "Can I repartition my hard disk?" but it uses terms that I don't know what they mean, therefore I can not follow the instructions.  I need a simple way to get more space in my D drive.   BobI have been told that a person should never put anything in D drive.  It is for the recovery and only recovery.   Is this true?  I don't know how things get there.   I suppose when you run a program part of it is in D drive but I have no idea how.  I know that sometimes D drive has more stuff in it than at other times and I never put anything there.  What I need is more space or some way to get rid of some of what is there.   Bob Quote from: Bobh on June 11, 2009, 01:21:53 PM
Mulreay -
I did a disk clean up on both the C & D drives.  I started a defag but it ran so long I gave up.

You gave up? Why would you give up? Disk de-frag is one of the most important things you do on your system atleast once a month. It may take minutes or hours but you let it run. I had a De-frag take 7hrs but it cleared over 12gb of storage. You need to do a disk clean first and de-frag then we will see what your left with. CLEAN-DISK first though. You will get that right next to de-frag. Deleate all the crap you don't need go to accessories then to system tools. You want to run a disk cleanup first 'let it run' then run a defrag. But leave it alone it can take hours. I know it's a pain but it's worth remembering in the future DONT leave it so long!

Once you have done it then let's look at the problem!in the windows disk cleanup tool, did you have it clean out system restore points? That's one place that takes up a lot of space if you have restore points that are really old and therefore not really something you're keeping.2x3i5x -
Yes I deleted all but the last restore points.  Since I did a full factory restore there was no restore points to start .   I got rid of everything I could think of and after that I ran a backup onto a DVD.  It took two DVDs which surprised me.  I haven't tried to use them to run a restore but I will in the next day or two.  Thanks    Bob

Solve : USB storage device?

Answer»

I tried to transfer some files from my storage device to one of my computers running XP Pro. SP2. It just treats the storage device as another disk drive. When I try to open it I get this message; "Disk is not formatted. Do you want to format it?" The device works very well on my other pc and my laptop. Any ideas?I assume you are referring to a plain USB Jump Drive.

Your USB Jump Drive in fact may just not be Formatted, and you got away with that on your PC and Laptop, while your XP Pro will not LET you do that.
That problem exists also with Floppies, older systems will allow this while XP won't.

If there is nothing important on that drive, than just Format it, as it wants you to do. Then PLUG it into your PC and Laptop, and see what happens. If none of your computers are complaining about your Reformatted Jump Drive, than put some file on it and try to load it from one to another.

Also, if you want to save anything that is on it, just put it into a computer that will accept it, take the data off, and then format it, and put the files/data back on.  This may be obvious, maybe not.you cannot store data on an unformatted drive in the first place, there is no "getting away with it" in any OS.

However, Some OS's simply don't RECOGNIZE some formats- if your PC & laptop are running vista, it may be POSSIBLE the Drive is formatted using "exFAT" which XP doesn't recognize.

Determine the file-system by viewing the drive properties on one of the computers that it works on. Let us know the filesystem. The format is Fat.
Edit. I just tried it again and it works. The computer is playing mind games with me.PC's do that when they get bored..... that's why we try to replace them so often- before they wise-up. My Old PC, why, we got along alright for a while, but he KEPT saying he was hot stuff, and I said otherwise, so now when I use it, it'll randomly shoot up to 80 degrees Celsius. It was just after the PC showed me it's proof that 1=0 that I managed to replace it.

Solve : Vista won't update:?

Answer»

I have been working (unsuccessfully) on a friends computer. It's an ACER Aspire M5640 a year or so old. On May 17th it quit being qable to update. The error code from the update site is 80072 EFB. That error code refers to the update site being firewalled. I have taken the steps listed below.

I completely got rid of the non updated, 90 day expired trial version of Norton using add/delete programs, the Norton Uninstaller (twice) and finally ComboFix. I shut off the MS FIREWALL. I reset the MS firewall. I reset the parameters of the MS firewall and finally I uninstalled the MS firewall. No LOVE, so now the computer has a freshly installed MS firewall lol. I performed the following steps from various MS tech help site windowshelp.microsoft.com/Windows/en-US/help/93b6ab71-8b21-4b50-b40e-abb80eba29271033.mspx , support.microsoft.com/?kbid=836941, I don't have the link available, but I installed the latest MS update agent and also ran the system update readiness tool FOUND here: support.microsoft.com/kb/947821. I've tried other things as well but nothing is working. Can anybody help me further?Download WUFix.
Double click on WUFix.bat file to run it.
Vista users: right click on WUFix.bat, and click Run as Administrator.
After successful run, restart computer. Thanks Bruni. I gave the computer back to my friend (unfixed lol) but I will go over sometime this week and try that. I'll let you know if it works or not. You're welcome
That would be Broni Sorry.  As I've gotten old my vision has deteriorated.......It's OK. I had to bug you a little Well I walked my friend through the process over the phone, directing her to here and using the link posted above. She downloaded it to desk top, right clicked it and ran as ADMIN, and rebooted. The computer crashed on restart and went to the repair option where I had her do a restore. While it is possible she did something wrong I can't see how. Have you ever had one crash after using the wufix.bat before?Never.
Maybe some one time glitch.
Try again.

Solve : Catalyst Control Center gone after driver update?

Answer»

I ran a driver update software last night to see what was out of date on my computer. I noticed it said my ATI card NEEDED updated, so I did. Anyway I had Catalyst control center INSTALLED, and shortly after the update it was gone. I have tried about five times to re install it, although every TIME it finishes and SAYS successful install, it's NOWHERE on my computer! I have no idea what's going on, if anyone can help I'd appreciate it. Oh yeah my OS is Vista 64bit

Sorry there is a big difference between needing something changing and just changing for the sake of it.

I just wanted to know why it was deleted, and why I can't get it back. I updated the drivers because my software said to. And for some reason this changed alot of programs, and settings on my computer. I'm not a computer expert, so I just followed what it told me to do. I don't just change things for the sake of it, I followed instructions and this is what happened.Driver updates are not always a good thing. Who told you to update the driver?Try a System Restore. Solve : Standard VGA graphics adapter/NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200 VC conflict?

Answer»

I just replaced my old on board standard VGA graphics adapter with a NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200 Video Card and upgraded to 2 GB of RAM in order to support VISTA. I had no problems with the installation and the computer is much faster. However, we are a non profit and do a lot of Powerpoint (Microsoft Office 2007) presentations for fundraisers and I notice this morning that we've lost some functionality options within the SOFTWARE (fades, wipes, etc.) and the transitions are choppy and poor? I had this function before and the fades were much nicer?

Should I disable the old standard VGA graphics adapter (there's an EXCLAMATION point next to it in Device Manager and Vista can't tell me what's wrong other than in can't load)?

Any thoughts?

JeffYes I would try to disable it. If that doesn't help try to remove any of the old video DRIVERS. My computer wont show the onboard card with my Nvidia card plugged in. So I had to take out the new Nvidia card uninstall all video drivers, put the Nvidia card back in and reinstall the Nvidia drivers.

May not be the cause but good place to start.

Solve : When I shut my computer off it turns itself back on.?

Answer»

My friend's computer (I'm house sitting for her) has a problem.  She is using Windows Vista.  The problem she is having (and now me since Im staying here for the next two weeks) is that her computer turns itself BACK on after being shut down. If you do not unplug the computer after it turns off it just turns back on. There does not seem to be any other problem. This is the only time it turns itself back on. If you plug it back in it does not turn back on automaticlly. What should I check? Any ideas? Thanks for your help.
TanithWhen you power on the computer from being totally off, hit one of these keys:

F1, F2, or delete

This will let you enter CMOS (some BASIC options), where you may be able to change some power options.  If you can, get to where the "POWER" options are and SEE if "Wake on LAN from S5" is Enabled...If it is enabled, highlight it, press enter and change the setting to "disable".

If there is another setting, "wake system from S5", highlight it, press enter and change the setting to "disable"....Once you are done, be sure to save your changes by hitting the F10 key, or going to the EXIT options..

If the problem goes away after adjusting these settings, then problem fixed!
I had a problem when a computer would not completely turn off.  It turned
out to be NOTHING more than a sticking on-off button.  Try shifting the computer case
a little by pushing on a upper corner during the shut down cycle.

Solve : Vista:Sometimes I'm the admin, Sometimes not. ..?

Answer»

I keep running into this problem. I AM the administrator as I have no special password set up, I do have one main account set up that has been the only one I created that I GAVE admin power to. Anyway, sometimes when I go to move a folder into another directory or folder it will stop me & tell me admin ok is needed. so i say yes but I keeps "dinging" & popping back up with the same window message. i look in the properties on the folder see that it is "read only" & unclick this, APPLY, & close. try to move again. Lather , rinse repeat. I look & make sure I have permissions in the proerties of the folder, if not I check the boxes so I do. Apply, close everything up, try again...same thing..I FIND this all weird because I sign in under my name/password (there are no OTHERS) so I assumes this is my admin account to since when I install, or run as admin it RUNS thru the whole need permission thing , "beep" , then lets me. the only time I get trouble is when I try to move or sometimes delete files. Any advice? thank you!Like this?

Solve : Computer freezing at start up...?

Answer»

I have the sager 9860 and it is freezing on STARTUP. In safe mode it freezes at the blue screen where you select which user. On normal start up it freezes at the windows loading screen. I can enter bios WITHOUT any problem. Unfortunately with the 9860 you cannot use the hitachi hard drive test disc. Does any one have any ideas or suggestions on what the issue could be? I am leaning away from it being a hard drive issue because in safe mode it knows the different users so the machine is accessing the hard drive to some degree.

Thanks in advance for any advice y'all may have. what os do you have??XPDoesnt sound good.  You mention it freezes in safe mode at the user selection screen.  Is that before or after you try to login?  Safe mode should really be able to load, somethings got the operating systems messed up good.  you may need to reinstall.  I hope you have backups. freezes the log in screen where you get to choose between you and the admin user.  Tried to use xp recovery disc to do a repair but unfortunately computer is not reading that the disc is in drive.  Went into bios and changed boot order so it would read disc first, still didnt  work. What does it say on this CD ? ?I dont have it in front of me but it says something like " ...for use on medion(sp?) computers only, xp recovery disc..."  Ill check later to confirm (im at work), but it is definately the xp recovery disc.  I have used it on other comps recently.Ok, I have the disk now. Midern Computer Inc. Recovery CD-ROM for Windows XP Home Edition with Service Pack2.  For distribution Only with a New PC.

I'm trying to remember some of the specs on my machine.  It is a Sager 9860-S.  Windows XP operated. 60 Gig hard drive, 2 gigs of ram.  I have the driver disk in case y'all think there is something on there I can use.

I defrag and clean the drive every one to two weeks and run a virus/spyware program at the same time.  Any suggestions will be gladly appreciated because Sager tech wants me to buy a new hard drive and see if that FIXES it.  I would like to make sure that it is the issue before I do it so I'm not stuck with an extra drive if it isn't.mine did the samething on my laptop with vista.  i went to killdisk.com and wipe the hard drive completely and reinstalled and worked great.  hope that helps a littleI defrag and clean the drive every one to two weeks and run a virus/spyware program at the same time.

If you did in fact do this every 1 or 2 Weeks i would find it quite likely that your hard drive is in fact spent

Doing so many Disk intensive things at the same time will shorten the life of any disk.

If i were you id Take the disk out put it in a second computer and try to pull any important FILES off it before it becomes totally unreadable.

and buy a new Drive

The XP CD does not match the machine you are trying to install it on...
Perhaps this is part of the dilemna...Its the one that came with the laptop, and it looks like it lines up with the Microsoft sticker for windows.  Windows XP Home Edition, Midern.  What disk should I be using?OK i misundestood...Sagern was given as the manuf in your 1st post...Midern is probably just a reseller.
If the CD version matches what's installed it should work fine...
Watch closely the next time you restart for a message that says "Press___to enter setup"
Then using that command on re-boot you need to set the CDROM as 1st boot priority in the Advanced Menu screen.
It should then boot to the XP CD...Went into bios and changes the boot order so it would go there first.  I also tried on the second drive and a USB drive.  Tried all 3 with no luck while CHANGING the boot order in bios.   I don't know if that is a sign of something.Did you hit F10 after making the changes to "Save Changes and Exit" ? ?

Solve : 2 video cards on Vista 64 bit?

Answer»

I just bought a third monitor and a new video to run one of my old monitors. I have a 8800 gts, and I bought an 8400 GS to run the other monitor. My motherboard is BIOSTAR NF520-A2.

Windows doesn't even show having TWO video cards in. I tried uninstalling the drivers and reinstalling, but I cannot get it to work.

Any help would be appreciated. Why do you need video cards just to run an extra monitor? What's WRONG with VGA leads?

I have two monitors on the 8800, and I want a third on the 8400. SPLITTERS won't work because I want 3 individual screens.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lnycEPymZF8

I have a 8800 gts, and I bought an 8400 GS
So, that's a PCI-Express card and PCI card, right?Yes, from reading the Microsoft website it should be fine because they will both use the geforce 8 series drivers.Access your BIOS screens and SEE whether it has a setting to do with primary graphics adapter, or similar terminology. If it has such a setting, you may need to select PCI as the primary graphics adapter.  This would allow the PCI-Express card to work but will also allow the system to recognize the PCI card.

If you have manual for your motherboard, it should have some info on this if it applies to your motherboard.I checked that, I set it to PCI slot first, and turned on the vga for the pci slots.

Still nothing.

I was using "get" in capitals, HOWEVER, it's traditional contextual meaning applies in my sentence. it is not some "tool" on the laptop. Quote

I love this answer....LOLAdmin password is usually blank on OEM installs.  Furthermore, the default user is usually in the Administrators group.

Solve : Major Problem With Windows Vista?

Answer»

I have Windows Vista Ultimate x64
I restarted to install Windows updates and now none of my USB devices will work.
This includes my mouse and keyboard (I do not have a PS/2 mouse or keyboard with which to troubleshoot)

The laser on the bottom of the mouse lights up when I am in POST and I am ABLE to MANIPULATE menus on i.e. choosing which OS to boot but when I boot into Vista, the light goes off and nothing works.

I have Windows 7 Installed (RC1) and that works with no problems!
I put in the Vista CD to try and REPAIR the installation but it says that the disc is not the correct version of Windows (which is rubbish, it's the disc I used to install it) and the mouse and keyboard DO work here.

From all this, I deduce that it's definitely Windows that Is the problem (The same problem occurs in Safe Mode!!)

I'm kinda desperate now for any help that you can give me

Thanks
Boo Boot into safe mode and go to device manager. Check under Universal serial bus controllers for errors. As I mentioned, the USB devices won't work in safe mode. I know this is very oddOkay, but are they listed in device manager?
If they are, right click them all individually, and select Uninstall. Then reboot PC in normal mode and they will automatically re-install.The computer boots onto the desktop with no problems.
From there, I cannot move the mouse or use the keyboard let alone opening device manager!

I'm assuming that any changes I make to 7 will have no effect on Vista? If it's hardware related, then I presume they will.

Okay, so if you can't move the mouse, press Start button, type "device manager", press enter. As soon as the window opens, press Tab and then use the down arrow to get to the USBs, then press the right arrow. Move down to one of them, press enter, then press tab three times. Press right arrow twice, press tab three or FOUR times depending on if "Roll back driver" is disabled or not.

After all that, you should be at Uninstall. Are you JOKING?
Without meaning to be rude, I mentioned 3 times that the KEYBOARD AND MOUSE are both not working.
Therefore, I cannot navigate to anything with the keyboard OR mouse.

Oh jeez I am asleep. I'm sorry about that, I wasn't actually trying to be funny.

I think you'll need another keyboard so, you'll have to get one somewhere. Quote

(I do not have a PS/2 mouse or keyboard with which to troubleshoot

Everyone should have a set...even if they sit in the closet most of their lives....
Boo what MBoard and BIOS ver. is this ? ?

Solve : Trying to install on partitioned drive...?

Answer»

A while ago my laptop died on me, but a friend was able to get it up and running again, replacing my old Vista with XP. Runs FASTER, and I've got several partitions on the hard drive.

Problem is, the F drive seems to be set as the main drive where installation files are getting, uh, installed -- and there's only 55MB of 3GB FREE on the drive. My C drive, however, has loads of space free.

I've been able to DIRECT as many setup files as I can to C rather than F, but software like Quicktime and iTunes is causing problems. Even though I'm asking it to INSTALL to C, it apparently still needs 150MB of free space on the F drive as well. No idea why, and there's no way I can change the destination drive from F -- even though I already chose C.

Basically, I need to direct EVERYTHING from F to C -- setup files, installation files, the lot.

I hope that's clear... so, um... help, please?Do you have your windows CD?More info on the size of the drive...how many partitions and why...and REMAINING free space on each partition and someone will be along shortly.
Personally i would back up what i needed...do a wipe and start over.
It sounds as if it wasn't set up properly to begin with and you will most likely continue to have issues from here on.

Broni answered on a similar question 2 days ago , but Idid not try all these things yet. Can the Module be un-and re-installed? Does a stand-alone version exist? Is it an error of a PC or a general Microsoft error?

Solve : Vista Not Booting: Partition Issues?

Answer»

Hiya GUYS,

I've done what i had assumed to be a rather simple procedure which has caused vista to no longer load.

I have a large hard which is allocated into various partitions:
C: NTFS 100GB
D: NTFS 500 GB
E: FAT32 10GB
F: NTFS 30 GB
J: NTFS 80 GB

J did not exist and was unallocated space (was saving for a linux install at a later date). I decided to format it to allow for more storage space on the my system.

I went to to the disc manager and attempted the conversion from there. There an error shows up that this disk is basic and have to be dynamic. I assumed vista was smart enough not to nuke its own active PARTITION tables and that this is nothing serious so I clicked ok.. and it changed all my partitions to dynamic.

The formatting of last allocated space began and finished. The computer was functioning and all the partitions seemed fine, but i instantly could tell something was wrong as there was no longer a "system partition". So on restart my fears were right i was left with the following error:

Booting 'Windows Vista' acpi
Vista Loader 2.1.2 Done!
fallback 1 find --set-root /bootmgr
Error 17: File not found Booting 'Windows NT/2000/XP'
fallback 2 find --set-root /ntldr
Error 17: Booting 'Enter Command LINE' Boot failed!
Press any key to enter command line.

I have tried using the vista recovery cd to repair startup, but alas no luck. I have access to the recovery tools, but not quite sure where to go from here.

I really really would appreciate any help that would allow vista to boot up without me having to reinstall my system as it's very fine tuned for development and would be an incredibly large task of MOVING all the DATA from all the partitions and reinstalling everything again.

Thanks alot in advance!

Solve : tried vista autographics driver update search, pc crashed, screen black.?

Answer»

I turned on my computer last night, and for some reason unknown to me, the icons were massive and the resolution made everything really big.
I tried adjusting screen resolution. but it only gave choice of 800x600 or 1024x768 or something like that, but neither made any difference. I`m on another pc now describing this because the vista only shows a black screen..

I tried system restore points going BACK to a few days, but no difference in restarting, and nothing once again happening when I try to adjust screen resolution in control panel, it used to give me options such as 1200x1600. (I have dual 4gigram, geforce 8800gts graphics card).vista64bit.

So I tried the autosearch feature for a new graphics driver update thinking this may be it, so it started searching then, bang the screen goes black.
I have tried rebooting many times including trying to get into safe mode F8 but the screen stays black showing a "no signal" sign.

I can always hear the windows vista system coming up from the speakers but obviously cannot see the screen to login, I do what I usually do, hit enter to select admin, then my password then enter hoping this logs me on and makes the screen visible but the screen remains black...

The on button at the front of the acer LCD monitor goes green as I turn it on, but then fades to orange again.

All this when I tried to do the driver search.. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! this is killing me, I have so MUCH data on that pc I never backed up either aaaghg!!!.

its impossible to know where I am even if I do press F8 and go to safe mode as I cannot see where I am tabbing to, to get to last good configuration...

.
.....................If the monitor stays black even in Safe Mode, you don't have driver issue.
Bad video card, bad VGA/DVI cable, bad monitor.

Do you have on-board video, or real video card?
Try different monitor, or THIS monitor on another computer.
Try different cable.I dragged it to the repair store,
they said if the video card becomes unstable the system defaults to the motherboard graphics,..or something like that. the guy there was able to start it up in safe mode, don`t know why I couldnt, and then set the settings to 1600x1024 instead of 1600 X 1200 ,saying the higher the resolution the more it taxes the graphics onscreen. . I thought the nvidea geforce 8800 GTS could HANDLE it all, I just use email and word documents.. but then this is vista 64 bit and my lifes been *censored* the last 2 YEARS with it. it is haunted by ghosts of sorts making their own decisions. less unstable with the service pack, but as soon as I can afford a mac i`m movin ship. My bro and sis have no problems on their macs like what i`ve dealt with.
hopefully windows 7, becomes heaven and not my windows *censored*.

I'm glad, you sorted it out.
Thanks for posting back

Solve : Vista Index search not working?

Answer»

Reguardless of what I search, even Program files EXE's or Start menu items, search NEVER FINDS anything I need. I've reindexed the default settings, Indexed the entire C drive, and also indexed only the program files/start menu files. WHAT'S THE FRIGGIN DEAL??Are you searching USING the search box on the Start menu?Yes.I tell you what....Windows search has always sucked.
Turn indexing off, because it does nothing, but hogging your computer resources.
Install 3rd party search.
I use SuperFinder: http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/File-Management/Super-Finder.shtml, which installs itself under RIGHT click menu, works great, and is highly customizable. but of course, if you want the windows startup search, that's up to you. I PERSONALLY didn't find it that terrible THOUGH.

How to Create a Mirror Image of Your Hard Drive

Solve : DVD/CD drive (Drive D:\)?

Answer»

Hello, I am a new member and I come to you with my problem hoping that someone out there will be able to help me. Here it goes:
I got a new computer with Vista Home Premium installed in it. My old computer's OS is Windows 98. I copied nearly all my files from the old computer into my new computer. I logged off for the day. The next day I wanted to copy the remaining files on the old computer to a CD-ROM so that I can transfer them to the new computer. However, when I switched on the old computer to finish the job, I realised that my CD-ROM drive (drive D:\) stopped working. From the messages appearing on the screen at the start of the computer, it appears that the Autoexec.bat file is corrupted. And I believe that this is the reason why the CD ROM drive is not working and displaying the message: D:\ drive is not ready.  Now can you tell me how to repair the autoexec.bat file? I do not know what should there be in it and how to repair it. I hope you can help. Regards.   If you can post a copy of the autoexec.bat file here we can have a look...
Keep in mind also if the drive is old it may have given up the Ghost...
If that's the case we can instruct on how to MOVE the old HDD to the new machine to copy your data without too much effort...
Let us know how you WANT to proceed.Thank you Patio for your quick response. The contents of autoexec.bat looks like gibberish but I will try to copy it tomorrow and post it. It is great that you have a way to copying directly from the HDD to the new computer. Thanks again.  When I turn on the computer, a message with a white background on the top of desktop background appears. The content of the message is as follows:
32-bit DLC VxD
DLCHP.EXE is required to spport 16 bit applications. It must be loaded from AUTOEXEC.BAT

Then, when I click on the OK, the normal operations (except the DVD drive, when clicked on to reveal the contents of the DVD disk in the drive, prompts a message:

D:\ is not accessible
The device is not ready
Retry       Cancel

I LOOKED at the Autoexec.bat file to look at its contents (Start/Run/ msconfig) I found the following contents under the Autoexec.bat:
ban /nc
ndisban
redirall
rem-By windows 98 Network- c:\windows\netstart
arswait
z:login
SET BLASTER=A22017D1 T2
SET SNDSCAPE=C:\WINDOWS

Then, there is 13 lines with gibberish with characters which can only be obtained from symbols file of Windows Word (eg. upside down question mark etc.)
Any help to make me use my DVD drive again or  to shift the files from my old computer with windows 98 to my new computer running Vista Home Premium will be appreciated.
Well an autoexec.bat should all be readable plain text...so something is amiss here..I think so too. Can you help me restoring it? At the moment I cannot connect the old computer to the Internet to download drivers for memory stick. Although I can download it with my new computer, I have no means to load it on to the old computer. I cannot network it with the new computer and I believe the problem of the Autoexec.bat was caused by TRYING to network it with the new computer. So it seems that only way I can get those files from the old computer is to get the disk drive working which I believe is not being turned on by the Autoexec.bat file. I should be grateful for some help.I don't know, if it's gonna fix your CD drive problem, but the only necessary lines in Win 98 autoexec.bat file are:

echo off
SET PATH=C:\Windows;C:\

That's it.How much data do you want to move? Does this machine have network access? Are both machines connected to a switch?

Thanks for the suggestion BRONI but I think there should be more lines to switch on the devices such as the DVD drive etc. Anyway I tried your suggestion but to no avail.

Thanks to you Spoiler too. The data I have to move are about 50MB or so.  As I said in my previous letter, I cannot connect the old computer to a network unfortunately. So only solution is to get the DVD drive working which I believe is due to the  corrupt Autoexec.bat file.

Thank you both of you for your efforts.Any other lines are not needed.
You may see line like this in autoexec. bat:
LH C:\Windows\COMMAND\MSCDEX.EXE /D:MSCD0001
which is responsible for CD drive, but it really doesn't matter, if it's there, or not.Hi Broni. If you read my earlier posting where I said:

When I turn on the computer, a message with a white background on the top of desktop background appears. The content of the message is as follows:
32-bit DLC VxD
DLCHLP.EXE is required to support 16 bit applications. It must be loaded from AUTOEXEC.BAT

Therefore, the executable file DLCHLP.EXE is required to support 16 bit applications and must be downloaded from Autoexec.bat. I am not sure where this file is located.

Thanks again for your interest.
  Now, wait a sec.
Did you make any changes to autoexec.bat?
If so, how does it look now?DLC is a network protocol. however if you don't know what it is chances are you don't need it. The message is simply sayign that 16-bit applications won't be able to use the DLC protocol without that file being loaded.

However- I'd go with Broni's suggested changes. Perhaps you can display your "config.sys" file contents as well?

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/148828Telling the truth, config.sys file is not needed at all in Win 98.

A pool header issue is a problem with Windows memory allocation. Solve : testing the "system recovery options" cd for vista?

Answer»

Hello

I finally got round to creating the "system recovery options " cd for windows vista
But what i am worried about is testing it out.

I know i would have to make sure the CD/DVD drive is listed first in the boot order, but its the options that i am not sure about.

Like what do i do when i get to "repair your computer" not sure about this one as it DOE's not need repairing.

Also when i do get to the "system recovery options" screen what do i click on.
As i am only testing this out, i don't want to be messing it up.

Startup repair
system restore
Windows complete pc restore
windows memory diagnostics tool
Command prompt

completely confused as SOMEONE said, when you create this cd, just test it to see if it works.

Any instructions for this if you just want to test it.....    If you have a spare HS handy and a magic marker I would label the spare HD ""TEST"" and remove your hard drive and place this hard drive in place of it. Then restore and follow the steps to recovery. If successful your all set you can then remove the test drive and put original drive back in, and set the test drive off to the side in case your system crashes and getting it back up and running could be as EASY as SWAPPING hard drives instead of a rebuild from CD or DVD

Being back up and running if just a hard drive data problem would be like a 5 minute process swapping drives on a desktop/tower system usually unless you have a DELL or HP with a burried hard drive.I believe Dave's answer to be right. i search the internet for a little BIT and didn't find anything else.

Hello, DaveLembke

At the moment this is for a new laptop, but anyway i have never really done anything like the above before, so i would not know how to do it anyway.

But as i said in my post, i was following instructions to create a "system recovery options" cd , but that was about it.
It did not tell you how you could test it, but i have just found this artical, which is simaler to what i did, only this tells you how to test it.

Its about a quarter of the way down on the web page, with you having better knowledge than me , can you tell me if this is ok.
And it is quite save  to try this testing myself..

Solve : connection problem vista hp?

Answer»

my friend has an hp pavillion a1737c
and he cant get internet the network status DISPLAYS the message: the dependency service or group failed to start.

does anyone know what this is and how to fix it.. all virus and malware scans CAME up clean alsoDid it ever work?yea it did it just up and stop ONE day system restore didnt fix itWhat is the exact message?
When does it pop-up? While using browser? Which one?
Does the ping work?
Wired, wireless?
Router involved?its not a pop up you only see it when you hover over the network status by the CLOCK: this is the only thing you see the dependency service or group failed to start.

its wired right into the modem totally forgot about ping

im pretty sure this is a windows fail we are PREPARING for a restore but i was just wondering if anyone had any info on this

First of all, check ping to see, if there is connection at all.
Then, check Event Viewer. It may tell you what services failed to start. Network connection depends on number of sub-services.
