Answer»

helloi recentley installed windows 7 beta but due to compatibility issues i decided i did not want it. The recovery manager used to RESTORE the system to its original factory condition and INSTALL vista again would not work so i looked on the internet and found another method this method was to set the recovery partition as the ACTIVE booter. so i set the recovery partition to active and then restarted the system. when it started it showed the usuall F9 ,F10 and the other commans but then it displayed a message saying " remove disks or other media press any key to restart " no discs or card or anything were inserted so i restarted only to be displayed the same message. i dont know what to do and no idont have any recovery discs . please HELP!!

i have a HP pavillion DV6000 laptop

Have a look here,

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/812492thanks, but ithat would only work if the recovery FILES wrere on a separate hdd not a partition

Solve : hp shutdown problem?

Answer»

I have a hp w19e computer with Windows XP 2005, and when I click start/shutdown I get an hourglass and no shutdown.  I have to shut it down by the power switch, and then when I restart it and try to shut it down via start/shutdown, it will shut down but not if I've use the computer for a while.  After the computer's been used awhile, it freezes up on start/shutdown.  Is there a remedy to this problem?  I'm not very computer savy, so please be as SIMPLISTIC in your explanation as possible.   Go Start>Run (Start Search in Vista), type in:
msconfig
Click OK (hit Enter in Vista).

Click on Startup tab.
Click DISABLE all

Click Services tab.
Put checkmark in Hide all Microsoft services
Click Disable all.

Click OK.
Restart computer in Normal Mode.

NOTE. If you use different firewall, than Windows firewall, turn Windows firewall on, just for this test, since your regular firewall won't be running.
If you use Windows firewall, you're fine.

Same problem with the shutdown?Hi and thanks for your suggestion, but this didn't seem to work.  I followed the steps you suggested, but when I RESTARTED the computer, I was prompted to select "Normal start up".  When I tried to shut down, I had the same problem--hourglass with no shutdown.  Is there anything else I can try?  Thanks for any help you can give me.Download HijackThis:

Hope this helps and thanks for any help you can give me with this problem.I don't see anything malicious, but....
...what do you mean by:
Quote

when I restarted the computer, I was prompted to select "Normal start up"
I have seen this before, since the msconfig file was changed, and certain things were disabled, Windows wants to know if you want to start with the altered configuration or with the normal (start everything) configuration. One solid reason msconfig should NOT be used to turn off/on services....So should you or should you not use msconfig, from what I gather Broni says yes and Patio says no  Not saying Broni is right or wrong...
However services.msc is the proper way to do it.
You can render a machine un-bootable using msconfig.so pretty much, it really doesn't matter, as long as you know what you're doing and your CAREFULLObviously everyone has different experience, but speaking from my own...
The only case, which is dangerous, in my opinion, is when you try to force Windows Safe Mode through msconfig. Then, there is a good chance for the computer being stuck in Safe Mode.
Also, keep in mind, I suggested turning off only non-Micro$oft services, and this should be safe.
Only recently, I was forced to do it, because it was the only way for me to install Vista's SP2.
I had no time to investigate, but some non-Micro$oft service was preventing SP from being installed.

In this case, if puterfix selected "Normal" startup, then no test was done.

The above procedure is called Safe Boot. It's not my invention, and I recommended it to many people for testing purposes. So far, I didn't have single complain. So, now I'm more confused than ever.  What should I do?  I have heard there is some sort of patch to fix this problem.  Is anyone aware of something like a patch?  Any other suggestions?  Is this happening to anybody else?  Please help!
Broni, isn't this an issue in the log?

Solve : Upload Photos?

Answer»

I am new to having a PC although I have been surfing the internet for years at cafes. I use Windows Vista.I have a digital camera and I can load photos from the camera into my computer. I can't figure-out how to send the photos to various sites so they can be posted together with my comments. When you post a comment look just below the txt box where it say's 'additional options' click on that then browse for the photo you want.
Job's a good'enStill confused. Do I browse on my camera for the photo I want to upload or must the photo already be loaded into my PC? I am afraid I won't succeed. You can probably browse for it straight from the camera, if when BROWSING you can find the file on Documents that holds the pictures. But it MAY be easier to upload the pics directly to your computer in a file that you will easily be able to find then upload them from there. When your browsing for them the files are generally easy to find as long as you KNOW what file you put them in.
Let me know how you get on.I'll mention the other way to do this.  You can use a photo HOSTING website such as http://photobucket.com/ , upload your photos or images to a free account you've created with that website, and then include a link to an image there in your forum post.  For example, this image comes from my Photobucket.com account:
That's an awfully sporty image there Soybean....

Sorry couldn't resist.I know res 2x2 not much to get the WIFE and kids in!

Solve : Computer boots to desktop, then reboots by itself?

Answer»

The computer boots up to my desktop (I can see all my icons and everything looks normal, but my mouse and keyboard wont work.  After a few minutes the computer SHUTS down.  It keeps doing this.

I was able to get into safe mode without it rebooting itself, but my mouse and keyboard are frozen while in Safe mode also.  I cannot click on anything to even begin finding the problem.

any help?  I called Dell since my computer is still under warranty, and they could not help.. He only suggested to wipe my hard drive clean and start all over.  Since I dont have all my files backed up , I really want to avoid this option.

Im using Windows Vista 32 bit.Your still under warranty and they said 'start again'? How's about you phone them back and say that is the worst customer service you have ever had and take the computer away and fix it NOW or I'll sue the *censored* off you.what the make/model of the computer? Quote from: blockHEAD on June 05, 2009, 09:40:30 PM

what the make/model of the computer?

It's still under Warranty!!It is a Dell XPS 700 with a Intel CORE 2 Duo processor.Yes its under warranty until Dec 2010.

Im in the middle of trying to RESTORE it via the DISK dell sent me when I bought it.  It said restore was successful, and that i needed to restart.  I pushed restart, and now I have a black screen with a blinking cursor in the top left hand corner.....Something is not right 'obviously' you need DELL to take a look. You should not have to use your time looking for answers when it's DELL's problem. The more you mess with it the more you put your warranty at risk.OH MY GOSH, the restore actually worked!!!!!!

No thanks to Dell I might add.  The guy didnt help at all, then at the end of the call he asked me if he had answered all my questions.  I was so shocked I wasnt sure what to say, so I said, Since my computers not working I GUESS not.Great that you sorted it out mate. Any more problems give us a nod.

Quote

i downloaded Windows XP SP3
You downloaded it??yesSince you changed the Boot order you might want to have a Closer Look in your Bios and make sure that CD Rom is still the first entry. Even if theres a Broken Boot loader on your HDD it may be found and attempt to Start which would stop it from Trying the CD Rom

After all that swapping and changing i would recommend that you Format your Disks as wellThere is no legal way to download Windows, and this TOPIC should be closed. If one has a licence for Vista and they Chose to use XP on said machine instead of Vista you are covered for the use Of XP under Microsofts Terms of Service

And Downloading XPs not illegal.

with out knowing what Licences he Possesses we do not know weather he has done anything illegal or not There are no Judges here.

Since when?
I'm sorry, I must have missed some news... Quote
If one has a licence for Vista and they Chose to use XP on said machine instead of Vista you are covered for the use Of XP under Microsofts Terms of Service

I was not aware that licenses were "backward compatible."  I did not think that a license for XP would cover Windows 2000, for example. They are and this is Off-topic

Now you have learned SOMETHING new Downloading service packs is fine - but service packs are add-ons to the established operating system.  They do not contain the operating system, itself. Quote

The poster has opened by stating he has downloaded Windows XP Service Pack 3.  If this is not what he meant, than he should state what he means.

I, too, would like to see a source which explains "backward compatibility" of licensing in the Windows world.

This isn't Linux.I'm argumentative so I get off Topic sometimes. Ish why i stoped Posting here way back when

Regardless Were not here to Judge people just to help them , Said poster never said he didn't have a Windows Xp Licence Also he never said he had a Vista one either

Solve : Transferring files?

Answer»

Hi - I am new to this site.  I have a Gateway Notebook w/Windows VISTA.  I WANT to transfer my MicroSoft Office Word 2007 files to a Thumb drive.  I have always in the past put the flash drive in a USB port and wait until I get a message that says it is installed.  Then I click on the entire document, with all the files, and Right Click "SEND TO" and choose the new drive (usually F for me).  Then I get a screen that shows my files transferring with the usual message if you want to replace the file etc.

This time I followed the exact procedure as outlined above (tried it several times in fact), but no files transfer to the thumb drive.  I get a message saying "this file is no longer located in this c/......  Verify item location.
Of course the item is there.  I can open it from that file.  I even tried transferring one file at a time and got that same message.

What am I doing wrong???  How can I get the entire document (with all the folders)  to transfer on the flash drive.   THANK YOU.Try booting into SAFE MODE and following the same procedure.

Restart your computer and tap the F8 key, when you enter the Advanced Options menu, select Safe Mode.

When it boots up into safe mode, try it again...

If it works, then this is an indication that a driver, application, or virus is interfering with it, while in normal mode....

In fact, you should probably, update your anti-virus definitions and run a scan, asap

edit: you could also try USING the command prompt to copy the files....Go into "my computer" and click on the C drive...Then right-click in the window (white area) and click "new", and then click "folder"....Name the folder "microsoft office STUFF" (WITHOUT the quotes)
Next, move all of the files you wish to copy to the thumb drive into the new folder you  just made...  Next, open a command prompt:  Click START (the pearl in the bottom left corner), type RUN into the search box, when it appears in the menu, click on it and type:  cmd   in the box and click OK...At the prompt, type:

copy c:\"microsoft office stuff" f:\     (Include the quotes here!!)

Press enter and it should copy all the microsoft files from the "microsoft office stuff" folder to your thumb drive.............just be SURE the thumb drive is using the DRIVE letter "F" like you said earlier

post back if there are any problems

Solve : Service Pack 2--should I download? What about verification??

Answer»

Hello,

On a site that I visit, I have been asked to download SERVICE Pack 2 so that I can view some online classes. Is this Service Pack something I need and should I trust MicroSoft (I don't really). Also, if I DO download it, will my files be protected in that nothing will be mysteriously deleted? Thank you so much.

On that same TOPIC, MS is asking me to click to verify that my copy of Windows is authentic. You know the one I mean. I always by-pass it because, again, I don't truly trust MS and am wondering what they are up to. It is not that I am unreasonably paranoid (only reasonably?) but from past experience, I have found that MS just seems to want to ##R%W us. I think they are already doing so, because ever SINCE I have been bypassing their silly request, it seems that small applications keep failing.

Hmm. Your help, as always from this wonderful site, will be truly appreciated.
JoseeWhat Operating System is this? XP? Vista?OH sorry...XP

And thanks, very much. Wow.Service Pack 2 is an absolute MUST!

There are many security issues and vulnerabilities, not to mention bugs.

Service Pack 2 or 3 is highly recommended.Okay. I'll take your word for it. Thank you. Should I GO for Service Pack 3? Or is 2 more recommended?

What about those pesky 'verification' issues and my mistrust of MS?

Josee, very appreciativeLike you said, you're just being paranoid. MS is trying to verify you have a legit copy of Windows. Nothing more.Alright then, but you know what I mean (well, maybe not). They just seem to be all over us all the time.

Again, thank you so much. You have been really great.

I will go with Service Pack 2.

Be well. You too, and good luck.

Solve : Are you now using Windows 7 RC for free??

Answer»

I got it and am going to upgrade this machine to dual boot XP and Windows 7 RC.
So far it looks pretty good. But ALREADY I am tired of the fish that does not move.
What about you?
I use Windows 7 RC to. I really enjoy it! And it's free! Well in 2010 it will shut off every two hours.

I love how it looks like Vista & Works like XP!

It's AWESOME!haven't tried it YET. I like my vista laptop as it is, but I might buy Windows 7 when it comes out, delete my XP partitions (never use them) and install windows 7 alongside Vista.Topic is unrealted to thread.Stay on Topic!!!  Another forum rule?

Well, to strictly stay on topic....... YES, I'm using Windows 7 RC1 for FREE.

Off Topic.....
Yes I ALSO like it and like in any other MS OS, you can change the desktop wall-paper.

Shadow  interesting how they have to Windows Se7en logo like that with the 7 in the middle, kinda looks like one of the old Mac OS logos...

But no I have not used Windows 7, even though I've heard that everyone like the beta, I would like to wait until its officially released and see how it is(MS might change it or add-on a lot of crapware to it, but that is usual for a new computer, has a lot of trialware)Well, that's the sheer beauty of the RC1.............NO CRAPWARE included.
And, you can run it for almost a year for FREE.It's the manufacturer's, not MS, that add the crapware. Thanks for the correction, usually say at Best Buy with all the computers set up for show; If you look on the desktop, they usually have all the crapware.

I don't think this applies to computers you buy direct from the manufacturer(of course if the OS is pre-installed on there, there probably is some crapware)

But back on topic...I have spotted a problem...

Windows 7 has some Crapware, and yet didn't come with some ineedthisware! It doesn't include Windows Movie MAKER! What is this? A conspiracy? Just Kidding... but really it doesn't include WMM.

How can a Topic be unrelated to a thread ? ?
They are one and the same... Quote from: milesman on May 25, 2009, 05:49:51 PM

yes it does. And M$ is only really kicking off the software so you have to download them yourself. Still it's free if you have windows 7 and it's all cuz people were whining that M$ is a monopoly cuz of IE. windows media player and all the other stuff that M$ includes.

But really, how can you surf the internet without IE already being there on a windows machine?

I am using windows 7 RC right now, pretty good. Maybe I'll get windows 7 RTM, you supposedly can upgrade from RC to RTM with a little change of numbers in a install check file. the sad thing is that I still dont have my copy yet, I'm like at 30% but with the mass being off the other day KIND of cut into the download time.  Not sure if I will be able to get it till this weekend but I got other matters.July 1st the BETA for Win7 will start timing out 2 hours a day....August 1st it takes a full dump. That bites, its probably a good thing I didnt get it may have had security leaks.

Solve : No Signal To Monitor After Update (Updated 12:17am June 1)?

Answer»

I have searched the web a bit and only found topics from 2007.

I have a nvidia geforce 9800 gtx (and windows VISTA 64x)and I just installed a bunch of updates using the windows updater thing. Now I trust windows to give me updates that aren't going to mess things up, since I haven't had problems before, but this morning when I got up and turned my PC on I decided to go ahead an update/install all the updates I have ben ignoring windows/other hardware/software. There was a list of things. I let it do the ones it recommended and everything downloaded and installed fine...HOWEVER...

When it asked me to restart my computer like always I clicked yes, my computer restarted and booted back up, but I recieve no signal to the monitor anymore, however, I can hear that windows has started up because I hear the sound it makes when it boots up. I did notice there was a nvidia update in the list but didn't pay much attention to it because I didn't believe it would mess everything up.

I am using the DVI display port, and I have tried changing to the VGA port to no avail.

I am wondering how I am going to get this fixed when I can't see anything because my montor stays off. I am pretty sure this is a software problem but since I can't see the screen there is really NOTHING I can do I think?

Any suggestions would be appreciated as I am about to take it to best buy and they charge like 70$ just to look at it I believe and this best buy, which is the only one near and they have tried to rip me off in the past by selling me a new hard drive to fix a freezing problem with a different computer and then tried to charge me over 100$ to reinstall XP (again this was with a different PC I don't use anymore). I didn't have them reinstall XP cause I know how to reinstall XP and when I got it home to reinstall with the new HD they sold me it froze 2 minutes after booting it up to install windows (yah I was angry cause they had it for over a week)

So please, any suggestions would be wonderful.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                                                                        -----UPDATE-------

Ok so best buy is saying the monitor is broken so they kept the monitor and are going to send it out (2-4 weeks to fix...under factory warranty). I get home and plug in my old NEC MultiSync 95 (which still works great, I keep it around for just such problems) and everything boots up fine UNTIL I try to launch something that requires a bit of graphics power. I tried to launch WoW, went through the launcher and when it starts up red lines squiggle across the screen for a second and the monitor poofs to a black screen.

I unplugged the monitor and tower in frustration and after a couple minutes plugged them back in. The monitor got a signal but everything was all RED. I switched to the secondary DVI port and I have color and everything runs fine unless I try to run anything that requires graphical power.

I am thinking graphics card? I attached a dxdiag to this post now.

Could the graphics card have fried my other monitor somehow? All this is just very frustrating to me atm! Any more help/suggestions would be much appreciated.

PS When I brought the PC to best buy they plugged the monitor into another PC the monitor didn't work with the other PC. I am thinking my computer is messing up the monitors somehow? As long as I don't run anything that requires graphics this older monitor runs fine so far, anything with graphics and I lose signal to the monitor after squiggly red lines appear for a second.

That's the lesson, everyone should learn. Never, EVER update ANYTHING through Windows updates, which doesn't concern Windows itself.
Unfortunately, Micro$oft often doesn't know what it's doing.

Now, did you try to start in Safe MODE?No, I didn't. I just got back from brining it to best buy. They hooked my PC up to a different monitor and it worked, then I brought my monitor in from the car to see if it worked and it didn't.

They say it's the monitor but the monitor is only a little over half a year old and it just seems awefuly coincidental that the monitor would fail hardware wise after installing an update when it was working fine before I restarted the PC and they say it's going to take 2-4 weeks.

I am actually going back over there to tell them to hook the monitor back up to a different PC to see if it works because that completely slipped my mind at the time.

If the monitor works with a different PC I'm going to be pretty upset with them because then it is def software related like I thought and they don't know what they are doing I think, heh (neither do I really but I am not completely stupid about computers, I can install hardware in the case and stuff).bump for people to read the updated post

Solve : overprinting of some web page articles?

Answer»

I notice that on some web pages some of the copy is overprinted. I am using Vista but problem was also there prior to vista. When doing a print out copy is perfect. Anyone know the reason?Try decreasing the "text" size your browser displays.  From Firefox browser, with a web page displayed, try "View -> Zoom -> Zoom Out". Lets try that answer again. What browser are you using?Use Print Preview to resize things as neccessary... Quote from: Mulreay on May 28, 2009, 05:53:46 PM

Lets try that answer again. What browser are you using?
I'm Using Internet Explorer
OK...  Which version of Internet Explorer?

Have you TRIED to adjust the "text size" from within Internet Explorer?

For Internet Explorer 7, try "View -> Text Size -> Medium, SMALLER, or Smallest"checked view - text size. had it on medium will try setting on smaller. This problem does not show on every web page just some. Will check on the other settings and thank you for your suggestions. You might check the "DPI" setting of Display Properties.  Setting it to normal or a smaller size solved an "overprint" problem I had on some web pages with an older HP computer (a few years back).  I don't recall whether my problem occurred on Internet Explorer (IE), Firefox, or both browsers.

Within Display Properties you should find the DPI setting at:  Settings tab -> ADVANCED button -> General tab -> DPI settings of Display subsection.

To access "Display Properties", RIGHT click on blank area of desktop and then left click on "Properties" in the resulting context menu.

This solution (and OTHERS) is discussed by "TomdKat" toward the bottom of the following link: Solved: Text Overwrite in Firefox .  Yes, I know you're using Internet Explorer.
Thanks Dahlabear - Think problem now solved since reduced text sizing. Appreciate your help . Looked at link you suggested nice to know I wasn't only one with this problem.

Solve : Computer hanging/freezing?

Answer»

I purchased a new laptop (Compaq Presario CQ60) in January.  It came with VISTA (32-Bit).

About 2 months ago it started freezing/hanging for 3-5 seconds every few minutes, no matter what I am doing........USING word, opening the documents folder, browsing, ETC.  All programs stop responding for a few seconds and then start working again, but there doesn't seem to be a rhyme or reason behind it.

I believe it started when I INSTALLED all of my printer programs and drivers (taken directly from the HP website), so I uninstalled everything that the printer needed......but there was NO change.  I have since then installed everything again, as I need to USE the printer.

I am running Norton AV, nothing has been found as far as virus/maleware is concerned....not sure what to do from here.

Computer Specs:
Window Vista Home Basic (32-bit)
Service Pack 1
2GB RAM
Processor: Intel CPU 585 2.16GHz

Auto Update is on, so everything should be updated for VistaSuggest you start by using System Restore to go back to a point before these symptoms appeared.before I do that.....would it serve me better to just save the work I have on the computer to our external HD and just do a clean install of the computer?

or should I just try the restore point?Restore point would be a lot quicker and no loss of data.newbie question alert........

when I do the system restore, I assume I lose everything that I have done between then and now?also, i just looked into the system restore point......and there is only 1 restore point listed, and it is from yesterday when windows was updated.......anyone know an answer to my (possibly) silly questions above?

The only thing I could do is shutdown using the button. This way I lose all my important data. Was just wondering if any one could help me troubleshoot it. Is it a harware problem or Windows problem or some deadly virus that my anti-virus doesnt detects???

Thanks for the reply. The ram of my laptop is 4 GB and is quite latest in the series. I have performed *censored* checks and anti virus scans but there wasnt any problem with that I guess. Solve : Cannot play video?

Answer»

Hello,

Currently, when I turn on my laptop, I receive NUMEROUS shlwapi.dll windows that pop up. I have Windows XP. When I try to open Internet Explorer, I only get a blank screen...

I'm able to open FIREFOX, however when I type in a web address, the individual LETTERS appear very slowly. And when I go to youtube, or any site that plays video, there is just a blank screen where the video should play...

I researched this QUITE a bit. I reloaded flash player, but it didn't HELP. I also downloaded the RegCure application to correct the shlwapi.dll problem, but when I attempted to run it, I get the shlwapi.dll error and it never runs. Firefox will run faster in Safe Mode (Networking), but I still cannot play any video. System Restore did not work either. I removed my Eset antivirus program, but this also did nothing...

I NEED to be able to run video ASAP, and would also like to have this shlwapi.dll error resolved...

Thank you!May I know the exact error message that you're getting from "shlwapi.dll"?Sure. It says:

firefox.exe

The PROCEDURE entry point SHRegGetValueW could not be located in the dynamic link library SHLWAPI.dll.Actually, I guess that "firefox.exe" heading is irrelevant. I get the same error message with an "explorer.exe" heading.do you have a windows xp install cd?

The problem can be by booting within windows cd, and starting windows in repair mode, so you can get the windows system file protection system and then you replace corrupted file within simple dos commands del and copy.

seems that SHLWAPI.dll file is corrupted on your computer and you need to replace it with a good copy of the file which is on the cd.Click Start then Run and type in: sfc /scannow and press enter.
Have your Windows CD handy, it will ask for it.I don't seem to have that CD. Could I download the files? Quote from: rocky7 on May 27, 2009, 05:36:45 PM

try the download from here. http://www.dll-files.com/dllindex/dll-files.shtml?shlwapiThat didn't work either, but thanks. It's that same RegCure application. When I attempt to run RegCure, I get the same dll error and it won't run...Is my best bet to download the Windows XP Recovery CD, and if so, which web site is best?

Can I pick up that CD somewhere?Is SHLWAPI.dll present in C:\Windows\System32 ?yes, it is.Go Start>Run, type in;
cmd
Click OK.

At command prompt, type in:
regsvr32 SHLWAPI.dll
Hit Enter.

Restart computer. After I type in regsvr32 SHLWAPI.dll and hit enter, I receive an error message that says:

"SHLWAPI.dll was loaded, but the DllRegisterServer entry point was not found.

This file can not be registered." Quote from: rocky7 on May 27, 2009, 09:02:21 PM

make a backup of that file

Then try overwriting it with the new dlll you download, and retry the cmd command broni mentioned. maybe that would work. I think the original dll on your computer is corrupted so registering won't work.

Solve : Laptop screen stays black for 25 min after startup - please help?

Answer»

Hi-

About three weeks ago, my Gateway model MA7 (MT6821) laptop with Windows Vista Home premium began loading the taskbar at the bottom of the screen, Skype and Yahoo Messenger as usual... but the desktop and the files on it were not visible for 10 minutes - just a black screen.  Now it's a 25 min delay, and I can't ACCESS any files or start taskbar programs until the desktop & files appear. (I can, however, tell Vista to accept Skype & Yahoo Messenger access on popup windows that appear before the full startup - The sidebar with a clock also starts quickly)

The font on my desktop files also appears to have changed and gotten slightly thinner.

I've downloaded several video editing programs during this time and before, so not sure if that's a factor. I'd be glad to eliminate some. I've attached a screenshot of the processes that run at startup (see below), in hopes someone reading this may recognize one that's causing a conflicton other pcs. Also have a long list of services running that I can mlist in case that may give anyone a clue.

I bought my pc the first month Vista was released (Feb 07). I downloaded IE8
two weeks ago, but the problem was happening before I updated from IE7.

Have an Intel Core2 cpu T5200 160GHz processor with 2GB ram and a 32-bit OS. 112 GB hard drive, most of which is filled with video and audio files, etc. I've run AVG and Ad-Aware scans but it hasn't fixed the problem.

Thanks for your help,
Jeff

[attachment deleted by admin]Are those all of the processes?Try deleting some unnecessary files, e.g. whatever you don't use regularly. Chances are, your hard drive is bogged down. I've had it happen to me.

How much space is left on your hard drive? Thanks - those are all the processes that appear at startup. I'd be glad to eliminate any unnecessary ones.

I don't have a lot of hard drive space left. Since I download a lot of video files, I'll get to no space left at times and have to delete files. on average I have 750MB-1GB available. You need to keep like 15% of your hard drive free depending on what OS you're using. Make it 15Gb and you'll PROBABLY see a HUGE performance jump.I'll definitely try that, but since it was never a problem before, is there anything I can remove (programs, processes, etc) that also might help?Well, you can make all the programs that start up when you boot your computer to be set to NOT boot up when you do so. Have shortcuts on your desktop for them so your computer doesn't have the extra burden of loading them when you start your computer. If you don't increase hard drive free space, one day, your computer won't boot at all, and your only option will be to format, and reinstall Windows.Try downloading ATF Cleaner
Save it to your Desktop.

Please locate ATF

  • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
  • Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browser[/b], do this also:
  • Click Firefox at the top and choose Select All from the list.
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
  • NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browser[/b], do this also:
  • Click Opera at the top and choose Select All from the list.
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
  • NOTE: : If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Also, please tell us how much space it has freed. Thanks for all your replies! Downloaded and ran the ATF program, which removed 150kb. I'd already been clearing IE and Firefox caches to free space, but this is quicker.

Stopped Skype, Yahoo IM, Windows Media Ctr network sharing svce config app, iTunes, GoogleTalk, Adobe Acrobat and Realplayer from starting automatically at startup. Also tried dumping some files - 5gb out of 111gb are now free. I'm still trying to get to 15-17gb total free, but have sooooo many files.

The window still stays black after startup, but now it's only 2 minutes vs. 25 minutes.  Still, the 2 min. delay (and font change) worries me. Is there any more troubleshooting I can do besides DEFRAGMENTING?

Can I/should I suspend any of these other programs still running at startup? Are any known to cause trouble? They are: three Intel Common User Interface programs (igfxtray.exe, hkcmd.exe and igfxpers.exe) and Intel's RAID Event Monitor (Iaanotif.exe), QuickTime (QTTask.exe), Java polatform SE 6 U11 (jusched.exe), GoogleToolbarNotifier.exe and GoogleUpdate.exe.  Thanks again! Quote

This is your main goal, for now.
We'll worry about unnecessary startups later.

Disable Hibernate in Windows Vista: http://www.helpwithwindows.com/WindowsVista/Disable_Hibernate_in_Windows_Vista.html (this will save you couple gigs)
All good advice, but a quick question about disabling hibernation:

When I click Vista's Start button, there is no "Start Search" box - maybe because I use the classic view of the desktop?

When I do a file search for cmd.exe, three cmd.exe files (each with corresponding cmdkey32 and cmdkey files) SHOW up with identical icons:  one set is in the System32, the 2nd set is in the SysWOW64 folder, and the third set is in this folder: (C:\USWV64PR\Windows\winsxs\amd64_microsoft-windows-commandprompt...)

Which of these cmd.exe files should I use the command on to disable hibernation, or is there another way?  The one in system32.
Change from "classic" to "default". It's much easier to use. More options.

Solve : dynamic disk, import failed?

Answer»

Hello,

One of my disks has disappeared. It is a dynamic disk that nether XP nor Vista can activate. I'm not sure how it happened. Under Vista it SAYS "import failed." I have TRIED to look online but EVERYWHERE says to convert to a basic disc but if I do that I will loose all of my data.

I would LIKE to know how to REACTIVATE it or read it so I can transfer my files off then convert it to a basic disk. Thanks.

Please if you can double check the error message codes...Unmountable Boot Volume may indicate bad hard drive.

Run hard drive diagnostics: http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=287
Make sure, you select tool, which is appropriate for the brand of your hard drive.
Depending on the program, it'll create bootable floppy, or bootable CD.
If downloaded file is of .iso type, use ImgBurn: http://www.imgburn.com/ to burn .iso file to a CD, and make the CD bootable.

NOTE. If your hard drive is made by Toshiba, which is not listed, try using Hitachi, or Seagate tools.
Just found out YESTERDAY SeaTools will not run on a Toshiba drive....
Did i mention i HATE working on laptops yet ? ?Did you have to spoil my Mother's Day? BTW, working on any Toshiba usually is a pain...At the end of this Month i plan on sending out a newsletter to my Customer BASE stating i no LONGER do laptops.

They are like Bic lighters...when they run out of gas you should pitch 'em and get a new one.Good timing. They're dirt cheap nowadays BTW how you liking your new one ? ?
STILL happy ?Yep. It's Compaq though. There was also a Toshiba with slightly bigger screen, at the same price, but I don't want to deal with any Toshiba anymore. I had one, I worked on few others. No more.Model # ? ?Presario CQ60

Thanks for the reply Mulreay, do you know the specific driver so I can go update it manually....I have the latest MS updates and the only thing I seen in the device manager was a warning next to the 6TO4 adapter Can you give me your full system specs and I'll have a look around for you mate. From John Bartlett:

The System File Checker is an important application which scans the integrity of all the protected system files on your PC. Should it locate an incorrect version of a specific protected file SFC automatically replaces it with the correct Microsoft version.

To check your Windows protected files, proceed as follows:

1/ CLICK the Start button

2/ From the Start Menu, Click All programs followed by Accessories

3/ In the Accessories menu, Right Click on the Command Prompt option

4/ From the drop down menu that appears, Click on the 'Run as administrator' option

5/ If you have the User Account Control (UAC) enabled you will be asked for authorisation prior to the command prompt opening. You may simply need to press the Continue button if you are the administrator or insert the administrator password etc.

6/ In the Command Prompt window, type: sfc /scannow and then press Enter

7/ A message will appear stating that 'the system scan will begin'

8/ Be PATIENT because the scan may take some time

9/ If any files require replacing SFC will replace them. You may be asked to insert your Vista DVD for this process to continue

10/ If everything is okay you should, after the scan, see the following message "Windows resource protection did not find any integrity violations"

11/ After the scan has completed, Close the command prompt window

Solve : LOST Operating system?

Answer»

A year ago, staff member Broni was a complete and huge help with a virus problem.  Now my girlfriend has a lost OS.
she has a Hewlett Packard Pavilion a1023c Desktop computer from 2004. It came with XP, but she loaded her old windows 2000 into it in the beginning and has used that ever since. Today, she set up a new HP Officejet printer, incl running the starter Cd to install it. The next time she turned on the computer, she got a blue screen that gave her options of booting, recovery, or help. she chose Recovery. (Big mistake, i think) From then on, she has the original XP desktop screen and icons and files, as if starting out new - not even an ISP chosen yet.. There is no sign of all the settings and files and 2000 OS that she had! I came over and went to system restore and it only had one restore point, the download of the printer drivers today.. probably because it was the unused XP restore data. That didn't help.
SO HOW do we find her LOST 2000 operating system, files, and her whole life for the past 4 years? I'll bet there is an easy fix, but I can't find it.Depends on if she did a full restore or if it was just a install, either one though is going to be hard on the files she is missing. You may still recover most of your documents and other things stored in that folfer. It depends. First step is to take the HDD out of the computer and stop trying to recover things.
You need to slave it in another computer.
Next use a special forensic level recovery tool.
Not the common sort of thong.

Here is a phone number of a company in California.
1 800 882 8178
Here is another: 1  877-624-7206

The phone call is free. But do NOT make  any deal with anybody until you know your options.
re reply #2 from "geek"  -  wow, it's that difficult to retrieve?  just by clicking on "recovery" at the wrong time?
we don't have expertise to remove hard drives or use recovery tools that are not the usual "thong" ()   i guess we'll take the whole tower down to Office Depot or Best Buy computer help teams.Call the 800 numbers. Talk to SOMEBODY that does this for a living. It is very costly. That's what happens when backup is not a habit.

In Windows, restore and recovery and not the same as eternal media backup.not really so much you can try an use recuva but It's easier if you probably took it to a local repair shop.lovetodance
Please, disregard Geek-9pm's posts.
Simply because those services CHARGE hundreds of DOLLARS, and I don't think any private party has any data so precious.
What happened here, when your girlfriend used recovery option, the computer was reset to 2004 state.
Some existing data surely got overwritten, but some may still exist.
Recovery chances are slim, but why not to give it a shot, free shot...
The less you use that computer, the better, so no new files are written over the old ones.
Here: http://www.raymond.cc/blog/archives/2008/01/24/top-10-free-data-recovery-software/ is a whole bunch of free file recovery tools, you can try.
Start with Recuva.I see I was good to recommened it.Oh, OK, I didn't see it. Credits go to squall_01 some what and what do you mean by that?  I was just hoping that it wasnt one of those things that pushed to be a good program.  Like Vista.Broni, thanks for the guidance on this (and last year's very good/successful help for which i am forever grateful)
.  i understand the importance of not downloading the recovery software and the RECOVERED files onto the problem hard drive (because they might overwrite the "lost data") - BUT where do i download the recovery software (like Recuva) and then how do i apply it to the problem hard drive?  and  where/how do i put the recovered files?
I don't think, you're gonna do too much extra damage by installing just Recuva on the computer in question.
I'm not sure, if it's gonna run from USB stick, but you may give it a try. That would be the best option. Save recovered files on the same stick, on CD, DVD, external hard drive. Lot of choices. Quote

I don't think, you're gonna do too much extra damage by installing just Recuva on the computer in question.
Broni, This would indicate you do not know what you are TALKING about. And you have not read their documentation and you have not used the product. I have. They tell right up front not to install on the same media. And if you have large files, like photos, you can not recovery with the free trial product.

Quote
They tell right up front not to install on the same media
You're correct here. My bad.
Trial version? As far, as I'm aware, Recuva is totally free. Here is what they say.
Notice there is a need to buy the software if you find large finds you need.
Free to try. Follow the directions. Worth a shot.
Do the slave drive thing as Patio posted somewhere recently.

Hello broni,  its a new laptop, i have already unchecked quite a few in msconfig, and to the best of my knowledge, there either user choices or not needed.

But if you want i can enable them all again and post back, which i think would be a better option
Anyway here's what running at startup at the moment, which is not that much really

The only thing:
TOSCDSPD (toscdspd.exe) - Used to provide an acoustic silencer for the CD drive. If you are playing a music CD, or installing software, and the CD player vibrates noisily, due to a poorly balanced CD, you can INVOKE this program from the task bar and slow down the player. This RESULTS in less or no vibration and therefore less or no noise.
Up to you.

Thanks broni, i spent an hour or two working that one out this afternoon, i had downloaded "autoruns.exe" and disabled it.
getting the hang of this a bit now, as to what programs or processes actually do, rather than just leave them alone.

Yes, get rid of McAfee. Very clever decission.
Use Add\Remove as normal, and then this: http://majorgeeks.com/McAfee_Consumer_Product_Removal_Tool_d5420.html

Forget AVG. The newest version has been having problems....

- free Comodo INTERNET Security (firewall + AV): http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com/
NOTE. During installation, Comodo will also allow you to install AV only, or firewall only, if you prefer to combine one Comodo product with some other product.

If you decide to install Avast, or Avira, make sure, Windows firewall is turned on, or use PC Tools Firewall Plus.

Great broni,  printed all that out, i will do that in a day or two.

When you say "use add\remove as normal"  do you mean click on the uninstall tab, and then go to the majorgeeks site for the removal tool.

Why i mentioned this, is i had McAfee a few years back, and when i clicked on uninstall , it woulden't do anything until i disabled it first Quote

Solve : Password????

How can i add password in my control panel and recycle BIN? I'm using Pentium Dual Core/Windows Vista. tnx!Add password to the Bin and Control Panel or add a password to Windows?

I know you can set the group policy to have it DENY access to Control Panel, but I'm not the Recycle Bin.

Why?Not meaning to step on your toes Carbon but I ALSO must ask the question. Why the recycle bin? What reason would you ever have to protect your rubbish?...Precisely. Quote from: czAr on May 08, 2009, 10:00:32 AM

Sorry I don't understand the question??It would be a perfect place to hide stuff if someone were checking up on you. LOLThat's why you put a password on Windows. Comrade Czar,U may be having some reason to lock up ur recycle bin from others, unfortunately u dont have any option available in Windows.I'm really amazed that there isn't some way to "password recycle bin" that a person could find by typing something (I can't THINK what) into a search engine (I can't think which one). Still, not to worry. In Soviet Russia the Recycle Bin passwords you! (etc)

Solve : "Favorites" not available?

Answer»

Internet Explorer can not find my"Favorites" file.  I've read a posting in this forum that sounded similar, but after following the instructions the problem was not solved.

When I click on the "Favorites star icon I get a message that says, "Location not available"  C:\users\kathi\appdata\roaming\earthlink\6.0\[email protected]\Favorit...\Favorites refers to a location etc., etc.

I can find my Favorites file in my computer, but the web cannot. If you say you can find the favorites FOLDER just select Import Favorites from the Tool menu in IE and select Import...
Point it to the correct location on your drive and you should be good to go...
I usually re-boot after this but it may not be neccessary.

It's under File/Import/Export...Thank you, but after an afternoon of agada, my husband and I worked it out.  Somehow a double "Favorites" file had been created... one empty, one with my links.  Niether were in the correct path for Internet Explorer to find them.  I had been fighting with this problem for four weeks now and had been through the hoops with Microsoft, Earthlink and Comcast... live CHAT, e-mails and phone calls (Did I mention that I have Vista?).  It was a 'by chance' that we discovered the solution.

I will, however, continue to seek answers at this forum since the other sources have proven to be dead ends.

Again "Thank You"

Daiza Diva Glad to hear you are fixed up and stop by anytime !I only wish this lady would have shared where she found the "second location" that had her favorites! I have not been able to see my favorites or ADD new ones for weeks!  I am having the exact problem she described. Can anyone help?OK...I have now found my favorites, but can't get them moved back to the "star" (favorites location) on IE.okay just got it. this is how to get the favorites in the star. first try to RESET your internet explorer from the control panel in internet options under the advanced tab. then try going here if it doesn't work.

Solve : any suggestions?

Answer»

I am running xp home on with an older desktop, I recently wiped all the users and left one with an ADMINISTRATOR password. On a reboot, it asks for the administrator info, then takes me to a screen with xp professional and asks me for a password where the user name is "Owner".  Now I can get into the computer using safe mode and Ive tried to tweak the user settings, but they are only for administrator, not for xp pro.
To make things worse, I tried to to wipe my HARD drive and start over, Its PROBABLY time for that anyway, When I put in the xp home disk, it starts the process, I accept it and then it tells me it cant read the disk and to put a windows disk in the drive, Ive tried 2 xp home disk and a newer vista disk, trying to wipe the hard drive. My question is... Is there any other way to format my hard drive? my disks arent working. Are you doing it right? Booting from the CDs?

There should be no problem formatting the drive via the Windows Setup.I accept the terms with f8, it acts like it is loading something, and then tells me my disk isnt a windows disk. Ive tried it a number of times, I actually have 2 xp home editions, and a NEW vista disk. I get the same thing with all. Is there not another way to format? maybe with a zip drive?
And where are these Windows CD's from ? ?
It should ask you to wipe/create partititon on bootup...
Some of the Sharpie versions of Windows will skip this important step.

Solve : Want to try Win 7 x64 on separate hard drive - How to??

Answer»

I just bought and installed Vista Home Premium 64 bit OS on my WD Velociraptor 150GB hard drive and I like it but I suspect that windows 7 will BECOME the OS to have as Vista will eventually become non supported. I'd like to try 7 and START becoming familiar with it but I don't have the room for it on this HD. I'd like to install it on a 465GB partition of my Seagate Barracuda 1TB hard drive. Then I'll need the option at boot to select which OS I want to run at that time.
So how do I get this file to install on the 2nd hard drive set to "Healthy Primary Partition". The WD Velociraptor drive is set to "Healthy (System, Boot, Page File, Active, Crash Dump, Primary Partition"?
Will the install give me the option to install the Win 7 OS on the 465GB partition without setting it to "System" therefore removing my present drive as "System"?
What other obstacles should I expect to run into?

Alan <><  Ok thanks ale52 . When I get both OS's installed, will I have to select which drive to boot from in the start-up screen before it automatically loads windows or will it wait for my command before booting from the drive set as first in the BIOS drive boot sequence? I guess what I'm wanting to do is have the choice without having to make that choice within the given time frame during the start-up sequence, (which is only a few seconds).Well I changed my mind about installing Win7 'release candidate' on this computer. I installed the 32 bit version Win 7 RC build 7100 on my Dell backup PC 2 days ago and it has crashed a few times already when trying to scan my system with my internet security program (which is the same as what I use on this PC). Seeing as how I just built this machine last month at a COST of over $1500 I don't want to be crashing it quite yet.
I'm not trying to say anything bad about Win 7 RC. So far, after only using it for a couple of days, I am very excited about it. It looks like it's going to be a great OS. The problems I've had so far have likely been due in part to my inexperience, and the RC version I'm using is not a final release. Windows clearly warns that this RC software should not be run on a daily used primary PC:

  Quote

Things you need to have before you start:
Dedicated test PC: Please don’t test the RC on your primary home or business PC

So I'll test it on the ole Dell for a while then fire up Win 7 64 bit on here at a later date.

Thanks ale52. I'll refer to this post again when I get ready to install Win 7 on my 'big kahuna'.

You know, I have been running Windows 7 for the past... ummm 4 months, atleast since the first beta was released, and I would have to say I have not had any issues with Crashing.
I think that right now, windows 7 does not like laptops, because my friend has had a similar problem, but that was with 7100 and 6959 builds, not the 7000 release I gave him.
Either way, if you want to try dual booting install vista and let Win7 handle the Dual boot procedure, its integrated into 7...

Solve : An email that won't delete?

Answer»

I have a desktop running Vista
I received an email from WEB MD that I believe is a legal site.
It won't open and it won't delete.
It resists all other commands in Window's mail.
It doesn't cause any difficulty but I want to make it go away,

Any suggestions appreciated.have you tried click move and move it to a folder and then delete the folder , harryDelete it in safemode...Thanks for your replies.
Neither approach would work.
It returned the message: An error has OCCUR ed."sorry for asking but did you put a tick at it before you tried to move it  , if you did tick it and TRY and send it to spamThanks for your response.

Yes I selected it. It won't move.
I have done everything I can think of to delete it or move it. It won't open or move.I stumbled upon the SOLUTION to this apparently common problem.

There was a HotFix for it on the MS site.

I down loaded it and 'wallah'... It SURE felt good not to have to look at that mail...

I'm thinking now: 'If it works, don't update.'

Thanks to those that tried to help me.
Ivan Copasglad to here its away

Solve : Antivirus Program?

Answer»

Quick, stupid question. If I have 2 partitions, one with Vista, one with 7, do I need an antivirus on both partitions? On my other machine, which has vista and xp, I had downloaded an antivirus on both partitions. Am I correct in doing this?

Note: I do not have a seperate partition for the data, I basically have 2 partitions with each one having differents OSs. The A/V app should be ABLE to SCAN the other partition without regard to the OS ...
I have XP/Vista/Win7 all on one machine and i can run defrag/diskclean and all my protection apps on all partitions from the XP install and it works fine...
Hope this helps...This is an interesting question.
I think, you should have two separate AV programs installed.
The main issue here is real-time protection, which you want to have running, when you're using particular OS.
Let's say, you have OS1, and OS2.
Your AV is installed on OS1, so I assume, when you boot to OS2, the real-time protection is gone.
Obviously on-demand scan will work for any partition, but real-time protection will not.

On my Vista, I have 4 other OSes installed on virtual partitions, and all of them have their own firewall, and AV.Thank you Both. Broni, I have the same thing with my other machine. I figured SINCE it as on another partition it wasnt PROVIDING real-time protection. I just didn't want it to interfere with the other (though I guess the other one isn't running anyways). Thank you! They won't interfere because they're not active at the same time.Whose real time protection is worth it ? ?What?...LOL

Solve : Local Area Connection icon missing?

Answer»

I have windows XP 32 bit and in the network connections folder both my local area connections are MISSING. I'm not really sure when this started..I just noticed it last weekend. The thing is my ethernet ports still work...they work perfectly fine. I can disable and re-enable them from device manager, I am getting the proper IP address I should be getting, and I can get on the internet and do everything just fine. I work at an ISP as a Network IT and Internet Tech..I have been fixing computers for about 6-7 years but this one has me stumped. I have tried everything I could think of...I uninstalled both ports and reinstalled them...that didn't work. So I looked it up on microsofts website to find out other things I could do such as making sure the 3 net.dll files were registered, I checked in the registry for a certain value it existed and was configured as it should be, I ran some other commands that microsoft recommended but still having the same problem. The only other thing I can think to do is wipe and start over...its not that big of problem because I have everything saved on my external but I would like to fix it without having to do that because it just time consuming. So if anyone has any suggestions or have had this problem yourself, I would really appreciate the help. Thanks!!Wow your an expert already.  . Are you saying that when you go to network places you can't find the icon there, or you want the icon to be seen in the systray?Go into your network connections, right click Local Area Connection and go to Properties.

Make sure the CHECK BOX is checked.Heh...see thats the problem...I know how to make the icon appear in the system tray. The local area connection icon doesn't EVEN appear in the network connections folder (>Start>My network places>View Network Connections) This is where the local area connections, any pppoe connections or other broadband, dialup, vpn connections are seen. My local area connection isn't here for me to right click it and go to properties or anything like that. I've made sure the services that involve this are all running and they are.
This article describes your issue http://support.microsoft.com/kb/894543, but I find it unlikely that you would have that hotfix installed... Still, might be worth looking at.Thnx...that link helped a lot but unfortunatley the hotfix is only for SP2 and I have SP3...I even tried uninstalling SP3 but that still didn't work...still kept saying that the service pack I was running was newer than the fix I was trying to do.Try doing a system RESTORE to before the problem started.

If that doesn't work run the sfc /scannow command.tried both of those too but still no luck. I might see if I can't get that hotfix to work. If that doesn't work i've been wanting to go ahead and upgrade to vista so I guess this is a good as time as any.

Solve : Vista Started Running Slow?

Answer»

Hello,
A friend referred me to this website, hope you guys can help me out!

I'm running on Windows Vista and just the other day it started giving me trouble, running really slow.  It happened after I uploaded a few gb's of videos to my computer from my camera.  I have 16GB's free of the 109GB's so running low on space isn't the problem.  I ran lavasoft's ad-aware scanner, did a full computer scan for viruses a couple times, I defragged, I ran a hijack this log and found a few things I needed to delete, I also used CCleaner and cleaned things up a bit.  However I'm still having problems.  I turned everything off at startup in case something was slowing it down.  As soon as I start up, my CPU is running at 30% and spikes up to 50, 70, 90%.  In firefox, if I just let it sit here it runs at around 30%-60% until I start scrolling and clicking on other tabs it spikes up to 70%+ and lags my computer a bit.

I checked out my processes and now I see a lot of svchost.exe's, one in particular was taking up a lot of my CPU  so I just ended it and my taskbar is the old fashion windows XP style, except for the start button.  If you have any ideas please let me know!

Windows likes approx. 15% free for comfort so 16G free on 109 is close. The log has a header missing, but appears to be clean.
I'd definitely go with patio's advice, and get some more free space.
How MUCH RAM do you have?
I don't like that svchost.exe using 49% of CPU cycles.

Download Process Explorer: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896653.aspx
Unzip ProcessExplorer.zip, and double click on procexp.exe to run the program.
Click on View > Select Colunms.
In addition to already pre-selected options, make sure, the Command Line is selected, and press OK.
Go File>Save As, and save the report as Procexp.txt.
Attach the file to your next reply. Not to hijack op's post, but I am wondering how much minimum free space would you recommend that I save on the pc? I know that too little free space can make your pc slow .... Quote

oh the minimum required for the built in windows defragmenter to work without that "disk space too low, please clean up or delete some files on computer to increase disk space" type message appears. It seems to be running a little bit easier, but still lags a bit and spikes up to 80-90% when I open a folder or click between tabs in firefox.  Just typing fast in this reply box causes it to lag.  Here is that log you asked for.

I also just deleted some stuff and now I have 21.6GB's of 109 free.  This laptop has 2GB's of ram and has a 2.2GHz dual core.  I've had the space down to just a couple of GB's free and it was faster than it is now.  That svchost that was taking up a lot of the CPU I ended it and restarted and it's not taking up that amount of CPU anymore.  I'm so confused now with why it's running so slow.  Just typing here, every several seconds it freezes up and takes a second to catch up with what I'm typing.  Arg, this is frustrating lol.Firefox is using over 64% of your CPU cycles, which is not normal.
You're not opening any new pages, while running Process Explorer?

Did you try to free some HD space?
You never said, how much RAM you have.

Do this.
Close Firefox. Wait a few moments, because sometimes it takes some time to close FF process.
Post new PE log.

Go Start>All Programs>Mozilla Firefox, click on Mozilla Firefox (safe mode).
Post new PE log.I did as you said, when I closed firefox my CPU cycles went down to 5-10%, I am running firefox in safemode now and it seems a whole lot better.  No lag so far.  It does spike up to 60-70% sometimes, but this is much better.  It is steadily running at around 30% which is pretty smooth.  So does this mean one of my plugins or scripts is lagging my laptop?  My specs are at the bottom of my previous post, I was modifying it while you wrote your last response.  Thanks for your help so far!

30% is better, but still HIGH. My FF never uses more than 2-3% of CPU at the most.

Go Start>Run (Start Search in Vista), type in:
msconfig
Click OK (hit Enter in Vista).

Click on Startup tab.
Click Disable all

Click Services tab.
Put checkmark in Hide all Microsoft services
Click Disable all.

Click OK.
Restart computer in Normal Mode.

NOTE. If you use different firewall, than Windows firewall, turn Windows firewall on, just for this test, since your regular firewall won't be running.
If you use Windows firewall, you're fine.

Run FF with no-adds, and post new PE log.

P. S. I'll be gone for couple of hours...
Sorry it's taken so long.  I did as you said and this is the PE log when I'm running firefox in safemode.

Get rid of Norton, using this: http://service1.symantec.com/Support/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039

Replace it with one of these:

- Avast! free antivirus: http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html
- Avira free antivirus: http://www.free-av.com/en/download/index.html

- free PC Tools Firewall Plus: http://www.pctools.com/firewall/

- free Comodo Internet Security (firewall + AV): http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com/
NOTE. During installation, Comodo will also allow you to install AV only, or firewall only, if you prefer to combine one Comodo product with some other product.

If you decide to install Avast, or Avira, make sure, Windows firewall is turned on, or use PC Tools Firewall Plus.
If you decide to install Comodo, make sure, Windows firewall is turned off.

IMPORTANT! Make sure, you use only ONE antivirus, and ONE firewall.

Solve : HELP! New Desktop freezes, whats wrong?!?

Answer»

Dear CH:

I recently bought a new desktop from Frys, here are the specs:

Gateway FX 6800-01e
Intel I7 quad core 2.66Ghz
3 GB DDR3
Windows Vista 64bits

I have just noticed that it freeze up sometimes (frequently) when I am doing multiple things with multiple windows or game opened at once, and it freezes completely, not even the mouse can move; so I have to do a force shut down.

I have also noticed that sometimes right after the Vista logo pops (not the vista loading bar), and the music ends, the screen suddenly changes into blank with the ending music frozen there. I have noticed that sometimes it's blank screen or sometimes its blue'ish vertical bars along with white/blue, just like if the screen color has been distorted. I have to force shut down and if I choose to "Start Windows Normally" from the selection screen after I reboot it, it will freeze again at the same POINT. Everytime I need to choose going on to safe mode first and then restart it to solve that issue and GET into windows normally.

Does that has to do with my hardware? or is it the Vista? I don't know whats wrong with it, it's a brand new branded Computer (not even custom-built) and its giving me troubles, I hope is not something really bad cuz I hate dealing with returns/exchange with customer support.

Please HELP me DAL and many many thanks in advance! One computer board should do: http://www.d-a-l.com/help/windows-vista-help/59696-help-new-desktop-freezes-whats.html#post188031 Quote

If you bought it locally, why not TAKE it back?

With UAC on, not that I KNOW of.

It's on by default if UAC is turned off.Yes, I am aware of that but i thought there might be a way round it.... Oh well, thanks anyway Quote from: boo on April 27, 2009, 03:59:42 AM

It's quite possible that there is a way around it by editing the registry. I don't recommend doing that if you don't know what you're doing when editing the registry.
The How-To Geek web site has a couple articles about that subject. The process involves creating a scheduled task that runs with administrator RIGHTS. There is no registry editing required. Here is a link to the main article. There is a second link at the end of the article.

Solve : Computer Restarts on its own?

Answer»

Topic. My XP just randomly restarted on it's on. Like a power surge. But I checked with my FAMILY and they didn't notice the surge. I didn't even notice. The light didn't dim or anything.

It IS working, since I am typing from it right now. It restarted around...12:50 P.M. today. So I don't know if that means anything.

So why is it doing this? A virus on my computer? Power supply malfunctioning? (That's impossible, I replaced it half a year ago). Quote from: Candora on April 25, 2009, 12:41:31 PM

So why is it doing this? A virus on my computer? Power supply malfunctioning? (That's impossible, I replaced it half a year ago).

There are so many things that could do that, one could only guess.1. DISABLE "Restart on error" feature...

1. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
2. Click the Advanced tab (Vista: click Advanced system settings).
3. Under Startup and Recovery, click Settings to open the Startup and Recovery dialog box.
4. Clear the Automatically restart check box, and click OK the necessary number of times.
5. Restart your computer for the settings to take effect.

If you see any error, let us know what it says.

2. Are you doing anything in particular, when computer restarts?

3. Navigate to: C:\Windows\Minidump folder.
If you see any .dmp files, zip all of them, and attach zipped file to your next reply.

4. Download, and install SpeedFan: http://www.almico.com/sfdownload.php
Post your computer temperatures:

Provide processor info (hold Windows logo key, and hit Pause/Break key to find out). For the record, this temp is probably because I left the computer on last night virus scanning with Avast! (And nothing)

http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l202/Candora_Authes/skee.jpg

[attachment deleted by admin]The temps are high. It shouldn't matter, if the computer is on for 5 minutes, or 5 HOURS. Temps should stay steady, unless, you're using some demanding program.
You didn't provide processor info.
I'm not sure yet, which temp is which, so...
Download, and install Everest: http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4181.html
Open it.
In left pane expand Computer folder.
Click once on Sensor.
What temps are listed there?

Quote
2. Are you doing anything in particular, when computer restarts?

Did you perform step 1?

You have two ERRORS...
One is from sunkfilt.sys file, which comes from Alcor Micro Corp Reader. Rings the bell?
The other one comes from afd.sys, which is Windows file, a driver for Winsock.
Let's wait with addressing these errors until we clear overheating issue. The processor info is in the picture I posted. On the left side. That window came up when I pressed the Windows logo and Pause/Break on the keyboard.

Motherboard with 37 C
CPU with 51 C
Seagate ST380011A with 37 C

I'm not sure. I don't remember doing anything particular when it happened. Maybe one of my programs was updating? Nothing specific is causing it to restart. At least, nothing I do

Just restarted

Not sure what Alcor Micro Corp Reader is. But the company seems legit when I Google'd it. Don't know what that or Winsock does eitherWhen was the last time, you cleaned inside the case?Half a month ago as wellSee, 51C for desktop CPU while idle is definitely too hot. Your processor max temp is listed at 70C.
I'd clean the inside, using compressed air, one more time. Check, if all fans are running.
With the case open, get household fan, and point it toward the open case.
See, if temps will go lower.

You may have some other issues, as well, as I stated above, but we can't try to fix two things at the same time. You might really have to get under that fan over the heat sink/cpu, if you unclip the fan and find a miniature hockey puck of compressed dirt you'll have found the problem.....I recently saw a pc go from 55C down to 15C after the wad of compressed dirt was removed.Thermal Paste Guide

See here if you do remove the heatsink/fan...So what you all are saying is that the reason my computer restarts by itself is because of overheating? Okay...
Any other possible reasons, seeing as how I posted a minidump as Broni askedAt this point it LOOKS like you're over heating. Which is a BIG problem with computers. You may even consider adding a second fan. From what I can tell, you only have 1 in there, and it doesn't look that great.

For the record, a PC with good cooling won't stay warm for long after it's done working on a heavy load. It should only take about 5 minutes at MOST to get the temperature down to normal.

Right now my hottest temp is 50C, and I have 7 programs open (not including background junk) Quote
Any other possible reasons, seeing as how I posted a minidump as Broni asked
We can't go there until one problem is eliminated.

Solve : gateway laptop supposed to have built in wireless?

Answer»

Its a gateway series M1617 laptop running win Vista (32 bit).  This laptop is supposed to have built in wireless capability (its got the wireless on off switch on the side).  However I cant connect to the INTERNET wirelessly.  When I go to the device manager, I dont see any entry that says wireless adapter, should I see something like that?

Also I have two entries, one is for ethernet controller, which says "No drivers installed'.  I click on update driver and choose search the internet, but it just stays searching and looks like its unable to FIND the driver

The other entry is STD vga adapter.  This one says drivers are installed, but says device cannot start.  What does that mean?
First, make sure the wireless switch is tured on on the side( DUH lol)
Secondly, in the  bottom right of the computer you should see in the taskbar an icon that looks like 2 little computers, probably with a red "x" on it. CLick it once and click "conncet to network". Do any wireless networks show up?I got it working.  All I needed was to let the computer search online for the drivers for ethernet controller.  I had no idea that ethernet controller would also include the wireless driver.  There was no other entry in device manager that said wireless adapter.

So I am still at a LOSS to understand how the driver installation enabled the wireless even though there is no wireless card listed as hardware in device manager.  It cant all be software, there has to be hardware right?
Onboard wireless setups normally reside all on one chip...therefore installing the Ethernet drivers enabled both wireless and wired connections...

Solve : Wireless disconnecting often?

Answer»

Hi, I am new here and a familiar user. The problem I am having is that my Dell Inspiron 1521 disconnects from my wireless internet every 10 minutes or so. It goes to "Local Only" when I diagnose the problem sometimes i have to reset the IP address and that works or reset the network. Also I can usually wait and the connection will come back up on its own. It is usually down for 3 to 5 minutes. My specs are listed below... Also I have two other laptops that don't experience these problems as often (Maybe once or twice an hour). Any help is appreciated. Thanks

Dell Inspiron 1521
Vista Home Basic
SP1
4 GB Ram, 32 bit Operating System
AMD Athlon 64 x 2 Dual Core TK -53 1.70GHz
Dell Wireless 1490 Dual Band WLan Mini-Card

My Router is a...
Linksys Wireless-N Broadband Router
Model Number WRT160N
One of the things that can cause this problem is RFI interference, the biggest culpret is cordless telephones, but it can be caused from a broad range of things  including garage DOOR OPENERS to thermostats to touch lamps. I would suggest changing the channel on your wireless router to another channel and see if that helps. Thats worked for me and many others. Good Luck and let us know if that helps. Please post your network settings for the comp in QUESTION and explain the settings on the router also.Probably the ISP...what type of connection ?
The router firmware may be an issue also.

Linksys is my least fav router...Netgear solved all my linksys problems.

the channel change is solid advice.I am not sure how to post my network settings. I use comcast Cable Internet and I am also not sure how to change the channel on my router unless you mean switch the ethernet cable in the back from port 1 to port say 3 or so. I did that! Thanks for all the help so far Ill keep you all POSTED on my progress.

You can access the router with a internet browser. If you have a manual for it you can follow instructions to change the wireless channel.

If you don't have a manual please post the make and model of the router and we can help with instructions. The make and model number of the router is listed in my original post. I do not have a mannual so any help is appreciated.

Thanks.ok the info guides are at this link..look for the PDF file link under ''more info'' heading

Solve : I have a problem shutting down vista?

Answer»

I have a problem shutting down Vista home premium after a sleep session. I can shut the computer down with no PROBLEMS at all unless it has gone to sleep and then been awaken. Even if I accidentally put the computer to sleep and then right away try to shut it down it just hangs at the "shutting Down" page. This is a 3 month old HP pavilion m9717c and has done this since new.
You may want to contact HP about this problem since its probably under warranty.

I just turn those problem modes off and run 'always on' myself or 1st lessen the severity of the mode to see if that helps.Don't use "sleep" FEATURE. M$ was never able to make it 100% flawless.Sleep and Hibernate, both, are the Kiss of Death.

When you're done with your computer, shut it down.
That's one thing in Windows that usually works.

It will work even better if you use this shortcut to facilitate a quicker SHUTDOWN.

%windir%\System32\shutdown.exe -s -t 00 -f

I've been using this Quick Shutdown shortcut, on hundreds of PC's, since XP was first released.
This shortcut also works on Vista and Windows 7.

Give it a GO, Mate!

Shadow

Solve : Okay please help me!?

Answer»

Okay,

I live in a basement suite and i share wireless internet with my land lord up stairs.
he says there is nothing wrong with his router.

a couple of months ago i got a labtop from my SCHOOL.
well the internet was working fine and then a couple of days ago it wont connect to the internet.
i have tried to reset the passwords and i EVEN got my landlord to turn off the
router and all that jazz, and nothing will help.

my boss says that its vista and they have updates or SOMETHING that screws up the network card...

i dont know but i really need help because i need the internet for school...

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE HELP MEEE

ITS SO STUPIED!Try doing a system restore to before the PROBLEM started.how do i do that and what are the consequences??You won't lose any data. It will just restore your computer to the way it was, before the problem started. All of your music and pictures etc.. will remain intact.

To perform a system restore in vista:
http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/using-windows-vista-system-restore/okay well i tryed to do it but there isnt a date long enough from when it started...
and when i try to find out how to make one i can find out how.How long has this been happening?um okay i know i said a couple of days ago,
but actually it was LIKE 2-3 weeks ago... LOL Quote

Sometimes, such details make a difference.

A lot can happen in a few weeks.

Did you install any programs or download anything right before this started?nopeeeeShould check that your wireless card is fully compatible with vista too

Solve : Internet Claims Connected, but no internet?

My mom has a brand new laptop, with Vista Home Premium.

She tries to diagnose the problems with wireless internet, but it just brings a little picture like this (except with icons):

Computer - - - - - (Green Check) - - - - - Router - - - - - (Red X) - - - - - Internet

The router shouldn't be the problem, because I can access it on my Desktop Computer (wired).1. CLICK Start>Run (Start>"Start search" in Vista).

2. Type in (or copy and paste):

          cmd /c ping google.com>%temp%\$.$&notepad %temp%\$.$

      and press Enter.

3. Notepad will open.

4. Copy all text in Notepad ([Ctrl-A], then [Ctrl-C]), and then post it (paste = [Ctrl-V]) in your next reply.

Solve : Windows Vista startup issue?

Answer»

My specs are on the left if you need.

The problem is that startup has become intolerably slow. The problem is not that there are too many programs starting up as i have trimmed them down in msconfig, the problem is that the programs that SHOULD startup are not being executed quickly enough.

When the computer starts up, i can open task manager easily enough and i can see that there are large gaps (2-3mins sometime) when the CPU is at 2-3% load - I cannot open e.g. Chrome whilst this is going on as it acts as if the CPU is RUNNING at full load.

Can anyone suggest a possible cause a solution for my problem - Any replies very welcome

Thank you
BooDownload, install, and run Whats Running.
Click on Take snapshot in the left pane.
New pop-up window will open.
Click on Save snapshot, and save the file as snap (.xml extension will be added automatically) to know location.

Zip the file, and attach it to your next reply.i installed the aforementioned software but was unable to start it - "unable to find PSInfo.dll which need to be in the same directory as Whatsrunning.exe"oh and the file is actually in the FOLDER mentioned in the error message
Is it 64-bit Vista?yep - i noticed no mention of compatibility on their website Post HJT log then.
Was the startup always slow?
Any connection to overclocking the video card? Thanks for reminding me - as i got only a small improvement in the performance from it and i want to sell the computer soon anyway, i clocked it back to the default

i will post a HJT log thenHere's the file

[attachment deleted by admin]Unless you willingly installed Kontiki Player....
Go Start&GT;Control Panel>Add\Remove ("Programs and Features" in Vista), and uninstall Sky Anytime (if present).
Download, and run KClean.exe: http://static.sky.com/kclean/KClean.exe to remove Kontiki from your computer.
NOTE: Kontiki is know resource hog.

Do you have any idea about these:
- O4 - Startup: kill.bat
- O4 - Startup: mel.bat222430.bat
- O4 - Startup: StartupFaster
- O4 - Global Startup: BumpTop.lnk = C:\Program Files (x86)\BumpTop\BumpTop.exe Quote from: Broni on April 25, 2009, 07:54:54 PM

Ok so Kontiki unfortunately is the download manager for 4OD - something i use alot and i cant stop it from starting up - ive tried removing it from the msconfig but it WORMS it's way back in there

Bumptop is legit
Startup faster is something i tried but it was crap and has been uninstalled and is not in the startup menu so I'm not sure why it's in that list

I'll look into the rest as they look "interesting"

Ha!

anyway, this is a screenshot that i took of the startup list - the two dodgy looking ones arent explained apart from their location....

[attachment deleted by admin]i navigated the the directory that the 2 files were in and could only see them when i unchecked "hide operating system files"......

They just sound ominous.. Quote

It sure does, because it's running its service at the startup:
O23 - Service: KService - Kontiki Inc. - C:\Program Files (x86)\Kontiki\KService.exe

For testing purposes, uninstall it, using my steps, and see, if it makes any difference.
You can always reinstall it.

Solve : How do I remove read only attribute??

Answer»

Hi everyone,

How do I remove read only attribute in Vista and make my drive and folders to write? Is it possible to do it? How can it be done? Thank you everyone.

You can CLICK right while mouse over a FILE and choose properties and SEE the read only check box.

I recommend you only do it to personal files and not system files.

here is some info on problems with read only files:
