Solve : Hard Freeze when running Bit Torrent?

Answer»

Hey guys,

I have Win. Vista Ult. x64 and it freezes when I run bit torrent... Any suggestions, or software recommendations would be appreciated...  Heya.

I know of no specific compatibility problems with BT (the client) and vista, especially 64.

I would suggest trying another client UTORRENT ( http://www.utorrent.com/ ) is very good, it has effectively exactly the same layout as BT, and its smaller. But with utorrent remember to SEED, as if your ratio gets  very low utorrent will slow ur downloads to ENCOURAGE you to seed.

Good luck, hope this helped. Quote from: SN1P3R on April 24, 2009, 11:49:38 AM

Thanks, I did try u torrent and I have the same problem.....Heya, sorry for the slow reply.

Well, then there are other things you can try.

Two things, goto the BT or UT ICON and right click, goto properties then compatibility, then check the box that says ' run in compatibility mode', then pick, 'windows XP sp2 (service pack 2)'. Then click OK.

Try to run the program again.

If it still doesn't work, then right click and click 'run as administrator'

then SEE if it works.

If it still doesn't work then i'm not sure of anything else you can do. Let me know though.uTorrent has been running non-stop on my Vista x64 laptop for over two weeks; no problems.

This might be an issue with your network drivers/hardware.I downloaded Vuze and it works fine.... Weird....Lol, kk, vuze is great, especialy for video. However its not the best bitorrent client ever, but it works. Good luck with ur illegal downloads.

Solve : How can I erase DVDs?

Answer»

I have backed up my computer on DVDs.  I have several of these but only want to save the last one I MADE.  I want to erase the old ones and use them again.
When I put a new DVD in to run a backup a PANEL says that it must be formatted and that will erase every thing on the DVD.  There is nothing on it because it is new.  If I put a DVD in  that has a backup on it, the panel says that there is already a backup on the DVD and refuses to run it.  How can I get it to erase the DVD and leave it clean so that I can use it again?   Thanks    BobAre they DVD-RW's or DVD-R's? Quote from: Carbon Dudeoxide on April 26, 2009, 05:05:55 AM

Are they DVD-RW's or DVD-R's?

A good question!
I forgot to tell you facts.  I am RUNNING Vista Home basic on an E Machine.  The DVD package says  DVD + R.  The computer panel says I am using it in  "DVD RW drive (E:).   Thanks for the replies.   Bob     There's your problem.

The DVD's are DVD-R's or DVD Recordables, not Re-Writable. They cannot be written on a second time, only once.Thank you for the explanation.  I just went into Best Buy and bought what they told me I needed.  No BIG deal.  I don't plan on making a backup very often and the DVDs are not expensive.  I'll just discard the old ones.   Thanks again.   BobAnytime.

Solve : PC will not sleep or hibernate properly?

Answer»

Specs on the left for reference.

I am using VISTA ultimate 64BIT.

I have activated the hibernate function both in the POWER settings and via TYPING a line into CMD.

Whenever i choose hibernate by clicking the power button on my compuetr (set to hibenrate in power settings), the computer powers down then restarts itself just like it would if it was restarting.

Just to check if the sleep function was the same, i tried that and it "slept" for about 20secs then powered on again...

Any ideas?

Any help welcomed

Thank you
BooIf this is desktop, don't even BOTHER...IMHO.As much as I respect your advice Broni, could you please elaborate?Sleep, hibernate, and all other power savings features never worked flawlessly in Windows, and I don't expect them to work well in any predictable future.
What's the reason to use them on desktop anyway?I use my computer alot but it uses rather alot of power and in the current climate i want to turn it off when im not using it but not have to wait ages for it to start up.
When i use XP on another computer, the hibernate function works flawlessly

Solve : no system idle process?

Answer»

Hi,

I've noticed from task manager that there is no system idle process running. Is this a problem and if so how to resolve it?

OS is VistaI just looked Task Manager in my VISTA laptop computer and it also SHOWS no system idle process.  This appears to be a difference between Vista and previous versions of Windows, so I don't think it's a problem.I personally have XP, but my friend has Vista. NORMALLY he can only see processes from his login, but not system processes. He looks for processes from ALL logins and then he can see system processes. It shows on my Vista...

[attachment deleted by admin]DITTO...I now have it, too.  I DISCOVERED that the checkbox for "Show processes from all users" must be checked in order for System Idle Process to be displayed.thanks Quote from: soybean on April 25, 2009, 06:02:06 PM

Solve : audio devices?

Answer»

Hi everyone,i have just OBTAINED a computer with windows vista.I like to record music including voice but i do not know how to find my settings for sterio mix and wave and microphone settings (etc) the audio i have on this computer is realtek high def. Please someone help me with this thank you whoever reads this for your valuable time.Alan.There should be a speaker icon in the system tray (bottom right corner) of your pc. Right-click on that and you'll see options for "Open Volume Mixer", "Playback Devices", "Recording Devices" and "Sounds".  I think that's what you're looking for.

If you don't see the speaker icon in the system tray, then your sound card is not setup or your SPEAKERS are not plugged in - you need to take care of those first.I have found the devices by clicking speaker at bottom right but i still cant OBTAIN sterio mix or microphone wave etc. I need sterio mix in order to play music in the music rooms.Try this...  When you right-click on the speaker, select "Playback Devices".  The window that comes up should show your speakers. Click on them and then click on the "Properties" button NEAR the bottom.  The new windows has a tab called "Levels".  That includes the balance. There are also SEVERAL other tabs.

I'm not an audio expert, but I did the above on my Vista PC. I don't have a microphone hooked up, but it looks like the same for "Recording Devices"

i do not have the original software for vista as it was installed by the company i got it from.

What do you mean? Where did you get this laptop from?

You should have received a Recovery Disc, or your laptop will have a recovery partition.

If it came from a disc, the 'company' should have given you the disc as well as a Windows Vista license if you paid for it.

What model of laptop is this?my ex bought it via the INTERNET, from the company Acer. At the moment I cannot find any DISCS that will help me that were provided with the laptop. I am unsure of the model, I am at work.
i will bring in the model details if you think this will help you to help me???

many thanks

Solve : Windows takes 10 MINUTES to Shutdown?

Answer»

I have Windows XP and it takes 10 MINUTES to SHUTDOWN!

I've been running XP on this laptop for years now and everything's been FINE.  I had to reformat the whole THING and I reinstalled Windows.  Now, it takes 10 minutes to shutdown: the icons go away and the wallpaper shows, then 10 minutes later, it says - shutting down and it turns off.  It never did this before and I am running the same Windows and I have the same programs INSTALLED

Any ideas? This may shed some light on your problems........

http://www.aumha.org/win5/a/shtdwnxp.phpGo Start>Run (Start Search in Vista), type in:
msconfig
Click OK (hit Enter in Vista).

Click on Startup tab.
Click Disable all

Click Services tab.
Put checkmark in Hide all Microsoft services
Click Disable all.

Click OK.
Restart computer in Normal Mode.

NOTE. If you use different firewall, than Windows firewall, turn Windows firewall on, just for this test, since your regular firewall won't be running.
If you use Windows firewall, you're fine.

Same thing?Ok, this is what I have come up with after 4 months:

I have tried the things you guys suggested and no avail.

I figured it must be a driver or something I installed when I tried to get the drivers and software back ONTO my computer.

I viewed the EVENT VIEWER and and kept noticing a error every time I shut down.  It was the WLAN TRAY - I have been having issues with the Dell Wireless Card and drivers.

I then went to MSCONFIG and went to SERVICES and unchecked the WLAN TRAY from the list.

Last, I went to ADD/REMOVE Programs and uninstalled the BROADCOM modem and anything that said BROADCOM.

IT WORKED!!  I don't want to get my hopes up since I have tried things before and it started doing the 10 min. shutdown a few times later.  BUT, I have given it 5 days and it works instantly!!

I think I got it!

I don't know if this can help anyone with the same problem, but I found that installing the DELL drivers (since a lot of PPL with the problem have Dells), that the WLAN TRAY is the problem. One more thing, this may speed it up even more in case you don't already have it:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=1B286E6D-8912-4E18-B570-42470E2F3582&displaylang=en

User Profile Hive Service.
It surely sped my shutdown up.

Solve : Windows Vista -Accidentally shut down during config.file update?

Answer»

There was a BIG message warning me not to shut the computer down during the update of some configuration files.  Apparently my ferrets didn't read the message and they ran across the power cord and the computer shut down.

When I restarted the computer I guess it tried to fix the problem, but a message informed me that it couldn't fix it automatically.  I tried hitting F8, but it still couldn't do a restore.  I tried running through that process several times. No luck.  Just a blue screen...no windows...nothing.

This was a brand new computer and I'm panicking.  Is there anything I can do or try before I have to take it into the shop?  I don't have a lot of money and I'd like to avoid that possibility.

At least I have my old dinosaur computer as a back up...but it's really slow.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.Contain your ferrets when you get updates!!

If it's brand new, it should still be under warranty. Can you take it back?Don't be hard on the ferrets.
Brand new computers have warranties. You can call the manufacture and report this as a problem.

I my opinion, as a consumer, this is not admissible in a brand new computer. A brand new computer should not have to have am Update. At least, not an update that is potentially destructive.

To illustrate the concept here. Suppose you just bought a new motorcycle. The store tells you to bring it back for an update to the engine. Then you pick it up and they say that you have to let the engine run for one hour on the road or something bad will happen. Imagine the uproar if that did happen to 100 new CYCLE owners in one week!

But if you don't make nnoise, they will not care about your problem. Let them know that that was a very bad thing and the blaame should not fall on you.

Window Vista has enough techology built into it thaht this should be preventable. Otherwise, every new Vista PC should have a a label:

       WARNING Warrenty void
If  used in house with Ferrets.

IMHOWell, the computer was a gift from my kids for christmas...I'm hoping that maybe they were smart enough to save the RECEIPT....I'll do my darnest to see if I can get this fixed under warranty.  I'm surprised that I didn't think of that first.  I guess panick can do that. LOL.

Other than that..I'm pretty much screwed though right?  no.

if you just got it, and there isn't very much of your INFORMATION that you want to recover, you might be able to perform a system RECOVERY using the "restore" partition, which most manufacturers put on the drive.

F12 as the computer boots (but before it tries to load windows) will usually bring up a prompt asking which to boot from. Usually, your OS drive, as well as the OS partition will be listed. use the process if elimination to determine which.

Once your in, just follow the prompts to restore the PC to it's FACTORY fresh condition. Note that all data added since you got it, Programs and so forth, will be lost.

Sometimes this will be a Recovery CD or DVD.

Solve : email addresses shown only partially?

Answer»

Trying to figure out why, when someone posts an email address on a forum I belong to, it only shows a partial address, such as: [email protected]
Is this a VISTA thing? Or a security item? Others I've talked with have no problem seeing the whole address.
Also, when SENDING emails, any way to prevent the address from showing up in the "To" line. Now it shows name and email address. When I SEND a group email, some people don't WANT their address posted.
ThanksNot sure about the partial email address thing - I always thought that was done by the forum to stop spam crawlers grabbing the email addresses.
As for the email on the "to" line, DEPENDING on the email client being used, if you create a custom distribution group you can prevent others from seeing the email addresses in that group...

Or just use BCC when adding the names...(blind carbon copy)

Solve : I can't download anything or open any attachments?

Answer»

I found a similar instance of this happening to someone else, but I could complete all of the steps to correct the problem, so maybe you can help.

I am running Windows Vista on my computer and every time that I try to download a program or attachment to my computer it doesn't complete.  It shows the dialogue box showing that the FILE or attachment is downloading, but then after it's completion the file is nowhere to be found.

Please Help!
What browser, version? What email program?Internet Explorer.  I have an e-mail account that I use online.
Did you try Firefox?I just tried to download firefox, but I can't download anything.  It wouldn't LET me complete the installation.Installation, or download?
If download, download it on another computer.I couldn't complete the download.  The dialogue box pops up and the file seems to be transfered, but after the box closes, nothing happens and it doesn't show up anywhere on my computer. As I said, download it on another computer, and use flash drive, CD, etc., to move installation file to THIS computer. That would be great if I had another computerI assume, you don't live in on no-man ISLAND....No SIR, but I am a very busy person who would like to find a solution tonight instead of running to use a computer somewhere else.Unfortunately, I can't run around for you, and trying another browser is the easiest way, I'm aware of, to see, if you have browser problem, or something else.I know that if I had a disk, I can definitely download the material on the disk, but I cannot download from the internet using IE.  it will download to disk regardless- Where are you looking for the file? Did you try selecting "Open" instead of "save"?Maybe someone else will come up with some other advice, but I gave you  mine.

Solve : Having Problems with My Hp Laptop Hoping Someone can help!?

Answer»

Hi Forgive if I'm posting in the wrong place...I'm New to the forum and have a question..
I have a laptop its not that old about 3 years old... I have been having problems with it turning off while I am using it, it turns right back on by itself after with a black screen that says "window error recovery" I contacted HP they had me do a "Power Drain" they also had me turn off my laptop and then turn it back on and press f10 repeatedly to get to the BIOS. I'm not sure if this worked since I just did this a few mins ago... But am hoping if anyone can help with anything else I can do if these steps didn't work.
Thanks in Advance Can you provide some more detail on this "Power Drain" procedure?  Exactly what did they have you do?  And, what did they have you do in the BIOS screens?

Did you computer have Vista on it when new, or was that an upgrade? Thanks you for your reply, Well with the Power Drain they had me take out the Battery and disconnect the laptop from all power supply and press and hold the power button for 30 sec. after they told me to put everything back and turn on and press f10 repeatedly and I did that and a BIOS screen came out, and it said do you want to exit and save all the changes(I had not changed anything at this point) but, since the HP man told me I didn't need to do anything just exit after getting to that BIOS page... He said my problem would be fixed once I reached that stage, So far the Laptop has not turned off on me yet... This is all I have done, I also have Driver Detective and that did a few updates on my laptop as well but it still turned off after those updates so that didn't help.... Get rid of Driver Detective...you are asking for problems. Are you for really I just paid 40 buck on that thing,  Did they rip me off?? Quote from: patio on April 22, 2009, 11:03:25 AM

Get rid of Driver Detective...you are asking for problems.
OK I just went to do something I should have done before getting this driver detective thing!!!! I read the reviews ugh!!!! they TOTALLY ripped me off didn't they? so now what do I do remove it from my laptop asap?? please help I don't want my laptop to crash because of this software, like some of those people on the reviews.... All the stuff I did to my laptop didn't work  It just turn off by itself again and restarted itself... I'm so lost I have no IDEA what it could be... the FANS seem to start to work right before it does this could it be over heating?Heat could be a problem. Look closely into your fan opening; you may need a flash light.  Do see dust in there?  A three YEAR old laptop, if never cleaned inside, is bound to have accumulated some dust.  There are numerous references on CLEANING a laptop.  See: http://www.google.com/#hl=en&q=cleaning+laptop+fan&btnG=Google+Search&aq=2&oq=cleaning+laptop+&fp=_rpp-4zAm3I .  I won't recommend any specific one since I haven't actually removed a laptop keyboard to clean components under the keyboard.  But, keyboard removal seems to be the commonly recommended approach.  If you don't want to try this yourself, perhaps you should search for a computer repair shop in your area.

Solve : HPWAMain Module/computer won't start up?

Answer»

I have searched and searched through the forums and cannot find anything similar to this.

My situation is this:

I came in this morning to find an error message on my laptop (HP G60-125NR, running on Vista, AMD Turion X2 64) saying that the "HPWA Main Module has failed" or something like that.  Asked me if I wanted Windows to find a solution to the problem and I clicked yes.  Then it sat there forever and I had to press and hold the power button.  Now it starts but nothing shows on the screen and there are no processes running as the button never lights up.  Any ideas?  I have tried everything.  This laptop is brand new (bought in November).  Thanks for any and all help!"or something like that" won't help us to help you...we need full, exact message.Unfortunately, the only thing I wrote down was "HPWAMain Module".  I have no other idea as to what else it might have said.HPWAMain.exe is wireless application bundled with HP computers that allows you to control different settings on the computer's wireless devices such as Bluetooth and WLAN.
Did you try to start in Safe Mode?Tried to start in Safe Mode, but nothing happens.  Just a black screen.

Would a problem with HPWAMain.exe CAUSE that?  I don't see how, but then again, I am just a mom, and not savvy in computers. So, when you power the computer up, there are no activity lights whatsoever?
Any sound of fans, hard drive spinning?Fan was running.

I found this link here from the hp website: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c00372748&lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&lang=en&rule=5483&product=3795270

I followed the steps under "Test the AC Adaptor".  And now it is loading in safe mode.  What does this mean?  A problem with the battery?  Or the adaptor? What happens, if you try to start it in Normal Mode?I restarted it and it WENT straight to normal mode.  And it is having no problems whatsoever.  A fluke?  Any way that I can check to see if there is a problem that needs to be fixed? If it happened just once, I wouldn't worry about it.Thanks, Broni.  You rock! You're welcome

Solve : Missing Operating System, Please Help?

Answer»

Ok I was recently trying to do a BIOS update on my ASUS m2n32 Sli-deluxe motherboard and it said to set your BIOS settings to DEFAULT before the update, so I restarted the computer and did that and then saved changes (I am running Vista 32 bit).  Well, the computer then went to reload and after the BIOS screen I am getting the message "missing operating system".  So, I restarted the machine and went into the BIOS to see if anything had changed and it is still detecting my hard drives and the boot order is still CD, HD, other and the message still comes up.  So i booted it with my recovery CD (i only have this from ASUS, not a full Vista disk) and i ran the startup REPAIR EVEN though it could not recognize an operating system and it came back with the response it could not fix the problem and these codes:

Problem event name: Startup Repair V2
Problem Signature 01: External Media
Problem Signature 02: 6.0.6000.16386.0.0.0.0
Problem Signature 03: 5
Problem Signature 04: 65537
Problem Signature 05: unknown
Problem Signature 06: corrupt partition table
Problem Signature 07: 0
Problem Signature 08: 1
Problem Signature 09: FixPartitionTable
Problem Signature 10: 1168
OS Version: 6.0.6000.2.0.

It looks to me like the partition is corrupt but I am not sure, and I am not computer literate enough to know what to do next.  Any advice would be much appreciated, thank you in advance for the help. Why did you flash the BIOS ? ?

ASUS has a BIOS recovery option...did you save the old BIOS ? ?I was having graphics card problems that would freeze my computers display driver with this error called nvdllmkm and updating my graphics drivers was not solving so I wanted to update the BIOS to see if that would help because ppl I talked to said it worked for them.  I honestly made a mistake by doing this on my own because I probably am not comp literate enough to know how to do it correctly, but I went onto the ASUS website and it said to update my bios to download the flash utility and the .bin file and set the settings to default before you do it.  That is when the problem occurred, I never did update the BIOS because the windows will not boot to get to the flash utility, I just set the existing BIOS to its default settings.  I didnt save anything yet because I figured after I set the settings to default I would save the BIOS before the update.  Unfortunately windows will no longer load. For exatly that reason.  thats why i dont mess with this stuff.  You KILLED it nothing much that you can do figure from your first post.

Solve : Computer start trouble?

Answer»

I came home from school TODAY and when I turned on my monitor I was given a very glitchy display with a message in the background that I couldn't make out. The display had tons of small WHITE boxes, random money signs, and lines going acrossed it. When I rebooted, it still had the display error, and wouldnt bring me to where I sign in for Vista. I rebooted yet again and it told me to restore, so I restored. When I did that and reloaded nothing happened. The screen itself works fine, the computer display itself is glitchy. I'm unsure as to how this happened since I'm the only PERSON who uses my computer so from me going to sleep to coming home nothing would have happened and it was working fine last night. If anyone has any ideas as to what may be wrong PLEASE post. Thank you.Swap in another video CARD...

Solve : Vista Task Scheduler (gui) question?

Answer»

I am in the process of familiarizing myself with the Task Scheduler gui feature running under my Windows Vista Home Basic operating system and seem to be able to fire up any program I want having also tried a variety of TRIGGERS.  My question is: Is there a gui way (within Task Scheduler) to “drill down” after a program begins to execute.  For example lets just say I have Task Scheduler start up FREECELL every evening at 7:00pm.  But lets say that I want to play the particular game #47.  If I were using my own fingers that would require pressing “F3” then entering “47” then hitting the “enter” key.  Is there a way to STRING those commands in order?  I’m not quite ready to get into VBScript yet.  THANKS for any help and PLEASE forgive any breaches of etiquette I may have committed.  I’m brand new to forums.

I just got my new laptop pc last week and everything was absolutely fine until TODAY when I restarted my computer after installing IE8 (and foolishly a program meant for 32bit Windows only) and then the worst thing possible happened. I got a black screen telling me that "Windows failed to start. A recent hardwar or software change MIGHT be the cause." And it SAYS it's missing the partmgr.sys file. It tells me to use the Windows installation disc to fix it. However, my PC didn't come with such disc. It only came with recovery discs(it's split into 2 parts). I'm not entirely sure how to use that. My friend told me to simply download the  official Windows Recovery disc from a torrent, burn it and then use it to boot my computer. It's supposed to fix my computer without deleting my HDD. So I did. However, my computer did not boot the CD when I restarted it. Someone told me that it's because I might have to configure my BIOS to boot with the DVD drive first when starting. I have no clue how to do that. And I can't even access Windows at all because Safe Mode doesn't work either. I'm completely lost and very VERY distressed as I really don't have the money to take it to a technician and there are some important files in there that I didn't get the chance to backup yet.

So my questions are:
1) What should be the best thing for my to do? The recovery program I downloaded seems great as a lot of people have had success with it. But my computer won't run it for some reason.
2) If that doesn't work, should I use the two-disc recovery that my manufacturer supplied? I tried that as well. Again, my computer didn't read it when starting.

My computer info:
OS: Windows Vista Premium 64bit
Manufacturer/Model: ASUS N80 Vn-X5 Laptop
CPU: Intel CORE 2 Duo P8600(2.4ghz)
Ram : 4Gb
GPU : Nvidia Geforce 9650M GT

*UPDATE*
Okay, well I figured out how to boot first with the DVD. I tried both startup recovery and system restore. Neither of those two worked for some reason. This is really fustrating and scary for me. I really don't want to do a complete reinstall nor do I think I am capable of doing so. I stink with computers.Reboot to the Recovery Console using the .iso you made...
After it finishes loading type in fixboot and hit Enter...
Remove the DVD and re-boot.
If this doesn't work repeat the above process and type in fixmbr and hit Enter...
Again remove the DVD and re-boot.

What is the full, exact message? Quote from: patio on April 18, 2009, 06:49:14 AM

Ooooops...Vista. Nevermind. Thanks for the suggestions! I've fixed it using the Restore option from the recovery disc. But I'm scared that it might happen again. What could've caused it? The error was due to a missing or corrupted partmgr.sys file.
It happened right after I installed IE8 and restarted. Also, when it was shutting off, Windows Update was installing something. And previously, I've accidently installed a program that was for 32bit Windows, not 64bit. Or could it be a virus/spyware?

someone else told me that it could be the fault of external USB devices. I have an USB mouse plugged in and a lot of times Vista shows a message saying that it's unable to recognize the USB device attached, even though the mouse is working fine. how did you fix it? I have the same problem. I also downloaded the same recovery program but cant get the computer to boot to it. Help!!!PSD
You need to start your own topic.PaperBlack,
In the first post you said you had it just a week. If so, may I ask you his. Why did you not return it to the store and have them repair it under warranty?
IME it is best to take early action if you suspect that a new and expensive product has some defect.

Cheers youngbingostart in safe mode and set your display to a RESOLUTION and refresh rate that your monitor supports.
Restart in safe mode.Tried that but dont see what to change
Thanks youngbingo Quote from: Youngbingo on April 20, 2009, 01:38:45 PM

Thanks youngbingo

Whatever you "did wrong" is where you need to change things. Display settings.

Save mode with VGA.
Or, safe mode with command line.

There's no working way to do what you described and retain all your info that i know of...
There is an option in Vista to save all your data and migrate it into a new install but it doesn't WORK very well...
I theory it's supposed to though.

What does the BSOD say?
Norton may be the culprit. It says Bad_pool_Caller
and then the following error line at te very bottom
0x000000c2 (0x00000007, 00000CD4, 23C0002, 89E26C10).

It conencts just fine through a hard wired connection but not wireless. I cannot disable Norton.Judging from the first parameter (0x00000007), it looks like driver problem.
Navigate to C:\Windows\Minidump, ZIP all .dmp files, and attach zipped file to your next reply. Here you go.
Thnaks for all your help with this issue.

Thanks again, even folks at Lenovo were not able to solve this issue :-)Ha! I knew, we were better here, than some Lenovo!
...just kidding...glad to help Hi, has regards norton, you have to download a removal tool from their web site. If that does not work you have to uninstall it manually by going into the registry. "symantec" regards johnBroni and johny120:  Nice job.  You guys make a pretty good team.

Solve : Vista Help... Can YOU solve the mystery??

Answer»

Hopefully someone can help me.

My parents have this brand new computer, a Dell with Vista.  When they got it, we tried hooking it to the internet and it wouldn't find a connection, turns out, the modem was bad.  So, they got a new modem.  Now they can GET online, but it is very S-L-O-W/hesitant.  It will show certian pages sometimes, and then sometimes, it will say "cannot display" the page another time.  Like, we watched a video on YouTube, and when we tried again, it said, "cannot display page".  Strangely, if you SEARCH from the "Windows Live" toolbar or the address bar, it's S-L-O-W or won't "display", but when searching from Google, it's slightly faster, but still lags.  Comcast thinks it is our security settings, and they had us try and change them, but it still lags.

Funny thing is, when I hook up to the modem with my NOTEBOOK with XP, it runs perfectly o ???n that internet connection.

Comcast also thinks it's McAfee, but my notebook has the exact same McAfee and as I said, I was running fine.

What ELSE could it be? Quote from: XP4Life on April 19, 2009, 09:52:48 AM

Solve : Downloaded programs wont Run or Save!?

Answer»

When trying to download any program off the internet, once it GETS to run or save, it will disappear. I have tried both with the same outcome. This HAPPENS on anything I have tried to download. I have used system recovery and the problem is still there. I'm using internet explorer and Windows Vista. Tried FireFox ? ?

What TYPE of web connection ? ?

In Vista check in User Name/Documents/Downloads...I don't have firefox DOWNLOADED currently so when attempting to download it, the same problem happens. Yeah I have looked everywhere for the files, nothing. You can TRY a windows search for the files.

Solve : Converting 64 bit Vista to 32 bit.....?

Answer»

I've seen here where some don't think there is a compatability issue, but with SOME programs there are!! My wife uses Yahoo Sitebuilder to set up and run her websites, and the NEW HP laptop we just got has the 64 BIT VERSION installed (we didn't KNOW there were 2 versions at the time) and Sitebuilder won't function right on it. Several calls to Yahoo and using thier technogeeks and no solution. However, on MY new desktop, I have Vista 32 bit.... and Sitebuilder functions flawlessly.....
So the QUESTION is..... If I GET a Vista 32 bit version disc, Can I boot from it, and use it to Re-Format the system to do a clean install of Vista32?? If not, how do I Format the drive so I CAN do a new install.... her primary use for it is sitework, and the way it is now, she's got a new system that can't be used for it.
Help?!?!You could do that...however you may want to suggest she just do her sitework on your machine instead of re-doing everything...True, but dragging my desktop around all the time would get old pretty fast!!

Solve : Windows 7 Start Up Error (booting)?

Answer»

Hi all, I know it's probably some conflict with windows of another program/software I installed. But does anyone know why this error is coming up every time windows starts up?

Also I really don't want to restore my pc to an earlier date and I donot want to reinstall windows, there's got to be a reason for this, restoring it is just a quick fix.

thanks....Did this just start? If so, what is new or different since the last time everything worked properly (ie, new hw, new sw, virus, error, etc)? Do you get the same thing with a clean boot? Let's find out:

Open msconfig and on the General tab choose "selective startup" (uncheck all three items) and reboot. Does the problem still occur? If not, start adding items back to msconfig one or two at a time, rebooting after each change, until the problem reappears and you'll have identified the offending process. This is clearly a time consuming procedure, but it is the best way to determine if some process loading with the system is the cause of your problem.

After you've isolated the cause, do not use msconfig to permanently disable the process. Instead, if it is a SERVICE go to START - RUN and type: SERVICES.msc (then press enter) and disable the service OR, if it a program, you can download & run a simple app such as Mike Lin's Startup Control Panel (http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml) to enable, disable, or otherwise manage startup programs.
I was trying to find a good antivirus program I liked. I had COMODO FIREWALL at first uninstalled that, it seemed after I uninstalled that, when the error occurred.  So basically it was uninstalling and installing new antivirus programs (Microsoft security essentials). So I have tried your solutions so far, non has worked I will keep trying your other ones you have on there. If you can't install a new AV you might also want to run an online scan and make sure this isn't malware related
http://housecall.trendmicro.com/Thank you, I'm attempting a registry scan, look at this (Link) reference and that's what it refers me to a corrupted registry file.

http://www.error-scan-tools.com/errors.php?t=0X40000015Good evening Nightjay0044

The suggestions from Allan are dead on but I just wanted to inform you that comodo also has a removal tool that may help you https://forums.comodo.com/install_setup_configuration_help/cleanup_tool_for_comodo_internet_security-t36499.0.html so this can be run after you have removed your old AV / firewall

Some times the removal / un-install process companies make for programs do not always get rid of all registry entries, folders etc. So a lot of companies out there make a manual clean up tool. This link to comodo is a little old and if you decide to run this as well just go to the web site and look for the "This is a batch file for removing left-over files and registry entries. and click on the word "batch" that should start the process.

Hopefully everything go well for you, Mike

NEVER use any registry utilities, scanners, or fixers. They CAUSE problems, they do not cure them.Good advice! Things I've tried so far and nothing is working.

1. COMODO Firewall removal tool
2. MSCONFIG Disable services and also in general tab
3. I did even a restore point to the past day or so ago, no good.

Seems as if I tried it all and it isn't working? Any other advice?Okay this may be a little confusing but try to follow me here. I went back to the MSCONFIG settings to try it again.

STEP 1: Unchecked those 3 BUTTONS.

STEP 2: System restarted and brought me to windows - after unselecting those items it gave me the windows 98 look instead of windows 7, but it made the error go away. And no services or nothing was present, not even internet. Here is the image.

STEP 3: Went back to MSCONFIG and only checked the "LOAD SYSTEM SERVICES" item. That seemed to do the trick, no error came up after I only selected that item. I didn't select start up programs.

So is it something in the start up program. Because I only selected Load system services? Open msconfig and on the General tab choose "selective startup" (uncheck all three items) and reboot. Does the problem still occur? If not, start adding items back to msconfig one or two at a time, rebooting after each change, until the problem reappears and you'll have identified the offending process. Yup, that's why i posted that post, i've isolated the error down to it's a start up menu program/item. Because without the start ups loaded up it doesn't cause the error, my pc works fine. I'll have to check back later to give you results on which one it is.. Quote from: Nightjay0044 on July 23, 2012, 06:24:33 AM

Solve : help recovering files before format?

Answer»

hello everyone

my laptop has stop working and unable to start, there are some IMPORTANT files on C drive, is there a tool that I can install it on a USB driver to boot computer and move my files?
I prefer light tools, not an operating system of 300 M.B and more

thanks Good evening feras and welcome back to CH

Yes you can download and use Linux to retrieve the info from your PC. Here is the LINK http://www.geekstogo.com/forum/topic/274691-use-puppy-linux-live-cd-to-recover-your-data/ this can be done with a blank CD or USB thumb drive. The most common way is too use a CD if you are not sure if your PC can boot from a USB device.

If there is anything else please just LET us know, Mike

Solve : Small icons not what they're supposed to be?

Answer»

This has happened to me after I tried using StyleXP (Genius! Lets use a WinXP program on Windows Vista! *FACEPALM*). I haven't tried too much to fix it yet, I just thought it was rather interesting. Here are some pictures.

As you can see here, the small icons in the list view shows directories as a recycle bin. However, on the bottom left, the larger icon still comes up as a FOLDER. Also, on the left pane there, all the icons (The C: drive being an exception) are incorrect.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Tiles, medium, large, and extra large are all OK though..
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

And for some reason, some files on my desktop have the recycle bin overlaid onto them.

Everything seems to be functioning properly, at least. The only THINGS I've tried to fix this is rebuilding the icon cache, and trying to restore the defaults with Winbubble. Even though I have the registry opened, I haven't tried anything with it yet. If anyone KNOWS exactly how to fix it, don't be afraid to speak up

Solve : Windows 8 First Impressions?

Answer»

Windows 8 recently became available on MSDN/technet so I decided to give Microsoft's latest and much maligned iteration of Windows a whirl. I didn't install to a physical computer, instead opting for a VMWare guest install to give it a look see.

Setup
Setup was surprisingly simple, and somehow asked even fewer questions than Win7, if memory serves. It did provide a bit less feedback, and for some reason you sign in to Windows with a hotmail or other Microsoft account (which could arguably be a problem for people that don't have one) But, when you think about it, this isn't exactly new. You need an account with Apple to work with iTunes and the iTunes store and things. I think you can skip it and not deal with the Windows app store, too.

Metro "The New Windows 8 UI"

This is the part that is getting the most flak as far as Windows 8 is concerned. I've heard a lot of rants about it, but never actually seen it in action myself, so tried to defer judgement for it. I'll admit it's certainly different and could take some getting used to compared to the previous paradigm, but I neither see that as a bad thing, nor do I see this as a bad thing. It takes a look back to see how this is a step forward; We've really been using the taskbar paradigm since Windows 95, and every version of windows since has had that. However, while Windows 95's Taskbar fit the document centric paradigm of the day, it doesn't really work as well when we are talking about social media, network, and internet focussed activities, for which there is little doubt is the center of many peoples computer activities. This new UI will probably work very well with touchscreens, which are poised to become a "thing" on desktop machines, making the cries that "OMG it's for tablets" obsolete as touchscreen monitors slowly replace "output only" monitors like LCDs replaced CRTs.  ClearType was designed just as LCDs started to come down in price, and was pretty pointless on CRT screens, but much like the Win8 style tried to "predict" where things were going.

Windows key still works the same for a given key sequence to search, which is nice. Lack of a START menu in desktop mode doesn't bother me at all, since I never used it (with the exception of search, which still works fine.

Also: I really like some of the touches that were added. When I installed firefox, it instantly DETECTED it and prompted me to ask if I wanted to change my default browser. Hopefully this will remove that INFURIATING prompt by every single bloody browser that complains when it isn't the default. Every time I start IE here, "Oh, hey, I notice you set some other browser as the default. That HAS to be a mistake, do you want to fix that mistake and set me as the default" Same for Chrome, and Opera... This should help since Win8 will recognize new browsers and ask you itself, rather than having every browser ask you every single time it starts.

I also like the overview the "win8 style" gives... (I really don't like the troubles that Metro AG legal trouble is causing...); hotmail inbox, right there. Often used apps, right there. And programs can add new interactive tiles with WinRT, too, which adds a lot of possibilities. Considering the fact that a lot of the "decked out" Windows desktops have pretty much the same crapton of pointless gadgetry that Win8 includes, I'm surprised how many people hate it for that reason.

A lot of the complaints I've heard still don't really echo with me after using win8. one of the common ones I hear is "you can't quit applications!". But when you think about it, isn't that a bit outmoded in some respects? I believe the new model makes sense- applications that are idle for a given period are essentially "hibernated" in that they are told "hey, save your stuff in this propertybag, I'll give it back when you wake up" and that application is terminated. When you go back to that "active" program, it re-reads that data and goes right back to where it was. One could argue that people THINKING that the applications never close is actually evidence of this functionality working perfectly. There really is no reason to think about computing in terms of discrete processes and programs, instead I think the ideal case- and this was first stepped towards on the Windows side with Windows 95- is to think of programs merely as building blocks in a workflow for a given task. Instead of having to think "OK, I have it in that E-Mail. so I'll start my E-mail client, and get the Mail, and close it" You just open the E-mail client and grab the information you need. No need to quit the program, since applications will be "hibernated" when they sit idle or memory runs tight.

One thing I don't like is the dumping of Aero, because I kind of LIKED that look. And I cannot seem to find how or where to customize the Win8 style desktop... thing... aside from the colour chosen during setup, that is. But this is all within the first half-hour.

My plan was to learn WinRT and get some apps on the Windows Store, since that is a better place than my website for advertising, even if I sell for a few dollars. Heck just in using Win8 I thought of a few app ideas- namely, something to customize things like the metro background and stuff, which would likely be possible via tweaks (assuming I didn't simply miss an obvious config dialog, that is).Got to say I totally agree BC, was quite happy to see someone who SHARES my opinion about Windows 8.

I get the impression that tablet PCs with Windows 8 are going to be more common, and desktops with touch-screens less so, however.  Most people have little need for desktops these days, although the artists, gaming enthusiasts and perhaps tech enthusiasts will still keep a market going.

I like Aero but won't miss it, I really don't care too much about the aesthetics of windows, and the Aero functionality will likely be topped by the Windows 8 UI.

I get the impression the 'hibernation'-like feature could cause a lot of bugs, but I'm not too concerned by that.

I do hope, however, there's an easy way to close windows straight away, or to change the system's set-up to allow more traditional program management.  Will all programs automatically 'hibernate' or will it only be a certain type or ones that specify supporting it?

EDIT: This is only a preference really, I'm understanding that it shouldn't cause many real usage issues provided there aren't too many bugs.I totally agree with Veltas and BC, although I thought I might point out some things:

You can move your mouse to the top left corner of the screen to see thumbnails of open apps. From there you can right-click and close them. I believe that this shuts down their process as well (except the social apps, which seemed to be like a windows service now).

And BC: if what you meant in that last sentence (about metro UI customization) was the background style and color, it can be changed after install through the PC settings menu (in metro, go to top right corner, settings, PC settings, and its in one of the things on the left) Quote from: prokhall on August 18, 2012, 12:54:18 AM

So as an advanced user, you'd know that the quickest way to use the start menu, is to open it, type the name of the app you want it and hit enter...and that's on both Win7 and Win8.

Solve : different programs?

I have downloaded a lot of programs (freeware) for my Win7, trying to optimize.  Now I am wondering if they all play well together.  Will one cancel out the other.  I trying to find a really good do-it-all freeware and I ended up with a bunch of them that now I'm not so sure of.  HELP.       RitaGood Evening arf340 and welcome to CH

To start with what programs are you trying or want to use?

MIKE I have 360 Amigo Speedup, JetBoost, Argente Utilities, PC Health Optimizer, MZ Optimizer, Tweak Now power toolws, Kingsoft PC Doctor, CCleaner, Advanced System Care FREE, Wise Disk Cleaner, Wise Registry Cleaner, AVG 2012 FREE, Malwarebytes free   I think that it.  please help.  I just want my computer to run very well.  I am disabled and I need it  thank you.  RitaOther than CCleaner and MBAM everything else i see listed is pure garbage and may be the ROOT CAUSE of your issues...
Just my opinion...others may chime in with differing views...Welcome back arf340 (Rita)

Wow that is a list are you running a AV (antivirus suite) now what I mean is do you have a "Active scanner now".

These questions are better suited fro the folks in the malware / virus section. But I can give you my opinion on some because I do use a couple of them.

I use malwarebytes (free ed) and ccleaner
In my opinion NEVER EVER just or use a registry tools / suites they cause more problems than they cure. (a lot of folks here and around the WWW will tell you the same thing).
Also in my opinion I have lost faith in AVG and have good luck with Avast and Vipre Suite 2012 (again my opinion)
Also in my opinion any internet boosters or optimizers are no good and a waste of money.

Buy are you looking for a good AIO (all in one) Utility for maleware / virus etc. Your list is quite extensive. Am I safe to assume you are OK right now and just looking before something BAD happens

Talk to you soon, Mike    Quote from: patio on July 24, 2012, 07:52:13 PM

I Agree 100%. The purpose of much of the listed software is not to help a PC run better, but to separate people from their money. You should NEVER use any sort of registry utility or cleaner. The best of them do absolutely nothing. The worst of them will leave your system unusable.

Solve : Can I find the address of a serial port??

Answer»

Hi,
I want to buy a USB device which uses a virtual serial port. The driver software assigns the next available serial port to it. How can I find the address of this port?
Regards
GeofflI would consider trying to find it in Computer Management.
What kind of USB Device? A memory stick, mobile device, ect, ect.

Right click on "Computer" and click "Manage", or open up the command line and TYPE in "compmgmt". Under the left plane, expand the "System Tools" tree, and click on "Device Manager". I would IMAGINE that it would come up in "Portable Devices", so expand that and right click on the device and do "Properties".

Hope it helps.System info for Windows will report it i believe...still Free...A USB COM port APPEARS in Device Manager as a COM port, I believe, since the driver basically fakes it's existence to the system. Therefore you can try visiting Device Manager and locating that "virtual" COM port. Right-clicking and choosing properties, you can then look at the resources tab to see any resourced allocated to the device.geoffl,
You could provide some detail as to why you need to use a USB device as a COM port. What OS are you using? What kind of computer?

Are you using n old DOS program that needs to directly get to the serial ports? If so, you may have some trouble.
Hi,
Thank you all for your interest. I haven't got the device yet (snail mail). It is a trigger to open a cash draw using NTVDM under XP. I have one now which connects to a com port. It works fine using a program called porttalk. I give porttalk the address and it gets permission to open the port (Not allowed I know). I think that if I know the address of the virtual port the USB version will work the same. My laptop does not have a com port. I am guessing the virtual port may get the same address as the first com port on any system. On all my work computers this is 03F8. Is this the same on every computer. If so what would be the address of com port 2.
Regards
Geofflgeoffl,
You need to find out from the manufacture if the virtual port MIMICS all or just some of the port elements.
It maybe more feasible to modify the software  you have by a hot patch of the actual low level code.

EDIT: Here is a reference for BASIC programers
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/823179
A real serial port has three output lines a and three to five input lines. Two of the output lines are controlled only via the control port, not the data port.
Has the OP considered using the parallel port?  Lot easier.
http://www.lammertbies.nl/comm/cable/parallel.htmlI'd wait for the device to arrive and read the instruction Manual...Hi,
Finally got the device and it works fine. Device manager shows no resources tab, but it must have the address of the first com port 03f8  because porttalk opens it with that address. Thank you all for your input.
Regards GeofflHey! Don't go away.
That has to be  great device. Please tell us more ABUT it.
A USB adapter that fully mimics a serial port is a great tool!
I had no idea that it would work that well! Who makes it? what does it cost? Web Sire?
Details please. Curious minds need to know!  Hi,
The company is umd.com.au. The product is a serial cash draw trigger model 317. Cost is $AU95 I think. Paul Otto ([email protected]) is a very helpful and knowledgeable person. Thank you for your interest.

Solve : High CPU Usage on HDD videos, choppy playback Help?

Answer»

I have updated all the drivers, I ran Windows MRT, shut down start-up programs and services that were not needed, and cleaned all the dust from inside the computer and all fans work fine. I have Vista Ultimate SP2, 4GB Ram and my processor is AMD sempron 3200+ 1.8 GHz and a NVIDIA Ge Force 6600 card 512MB. Before installing the video card (which I thought was the problem) video from my HDD playback was always choppy due to the very high CPU usage (only AVI files worked and still work smoothly). Although the problem has always occurred with videos from my HDD I decided to check on-line videos. Youtube videos have always worked smoothly but Vimeo videos are choppy like the vids on my HDD. I'm stumped on this one. Is it possible that there is a bug and Windows MRT cannot detect it? I have attached images below.

**I cannot attach image for some reason. The image was to show Task Manager showing 98% CPU usage while the video was on. I also did notice that with Explorer open (video closed) I also had 97% CPU usage.Good evening heatproducer and welcome to CH

#1... Have you have or installed any codec packs, MAYBE one is corrupt it maybe if the drivers were updated that may be the issue
#2... Vista 32 bit or 64 bit?
#3... Is the pc a custom unit or a like a "compaq sr5105" etc

Hope to hear from you soon,Mike

#1, #2- 32-bit, I had installed K-Lite Mega but I removed it and any codec adds before updating drivers, but the problem was there before installing K-Lite (I thought K-Lite would help)
#3- PC is a custom unit.

I'll take a look at it next time. The picture only showed that the media/video player was at or about 100% CPU usage (Divx, WMP, and Media Player Classic, etc.)

Solve : Computer browses slow on any browser?

Answer»

Hi! I've been looking for help with my computer. I'm not the best with computers, but I'm not a geezer either.

For the past few months my computer has been getting very sluggish while browsing the internet. I've ruled out malware, viruses, and registry issues as I've used various cleaners and anti-virus scanners. My regular day-to-day software is Microsoft Security Essentials however I have gone through periods with AVG and Malwarebytes.

Many people have suggested that it may just be Firefox, however Internet Explorer and Safari both proved to be just as slow. People have suggested that certain Add-Ons may lead to the browser slowing, however I have very few and as I mentioned the same went for other browsers.

I thought it may have been a memory issue so I've tried to reduce the amount of memory I use. I have an add-on that reduces the amount of memory Firefox will use in total, as well as using Add-block Plus and an add-on that doesn't activate Flash on a page until I click on the item that needs to use it.

I've ruled out the memory issue though considering I have 3GB of RAM on my Laptop and the only big programs that I usually have running that would TAKE a lot is Firefox and Itunes. However I've seen computers with a lot less memory handle both of those programs and more.

Additionally I've switched many of the visual features of Windows 7 off, for more of a windows classic look. Again, I don't think this is a memory issue so this hasn't done ANYTHING major.

It's not a lack of space for files, I have 88.7 free of 148GB on my C Drive.

I'm running Windows 7 Home Premium 32-bit.

The laptop I'm using is a Dell Inspiron 1545. It's a few years old and has been taken care of for the most part, regularly cleaning the vents and such. I'm wondering if it's just getting old at this point and that's why, but it's only three or four years old so I don't think that can be the reason. Good EVENING Mdmartin101 and welcome to CH

You have been busy and possibly eliminated issues maybe.

I do have a couple of suggestions

#1... Just for testing have you disabled MSE firewall to see if the issue is still present. (please re-enable after testing)
#2... I know you stated this issue is with all browser(s) is there a add-on that is common in the browsers like a filter / secure web browsing sites?
#3... What is your internet connection. Dial-up, Sat, IDSN, Cable, DSL
#4... Restart the PC and before you go on line start the "task manager" this can be done by right clicking in the task bar and look for task manager. Then while that is running open a browser go online and see if the CPU goes high?
$5... are you sure all old AV have been removed.

hope to hear from you soon, Mike  Have you tried both wired and wireless if available on your network setup? What is your connection speed and try running speedtest here -> http://www.speedtest.net/ Please post the RESULTS on both wired and wireless if POSSIBLE.

Solve : Outlook 2007 no matches found, indexing not running, cannot start windows search?

Answer»

Hi,

I was trying to troubleshoot Microsoft Outlook 2007, running on Windows 7. Initially, the problem was whenever i tried to search , this message appears:  "Outlook is currently indexing your items. Search results may be incomplete because items are still being indexed" and does not end.

So I used scanpst to repair the ost file (extension was .ost) but after that, the instant search returned no matches found even though i was search for an email that could be seen in the inbox.

I've checked the indexing options and it says "Indexing is not running", and the modify button is greyed out.

Windows search service is not running. I've tried to start it but got the error 183: Cannot create a file when that file already exists.

After that, i used sfc/scannow (system file checker tool) but got no error there.

Please advise!

Thanks!good EVENING mhk12112 and welcome to CH

I have seen the same error but in this instance the person had office 2003 and then also installed office 2007 and from past experiences after a period of time that is when the error came into play.

If you have office 2003 and office 2007 installed just REMOVE office 2003 and just use office 2007 and if you wondering what if some one send me a say word DOC that was written in 2003. Don't worry office 2007 will read it with out a issue and the same is true for the rest of the office suite.

If you look in your program list if you see (2) office suites (2003 office and office 2007) than they were installed as full versions and not upgrades.

The indexing service has an issue finishing the process because the way they are handled and having different file extensions

Please let us know if this is the case and if office 2007 was a upgrade or full install.

Hope to hear from you soon, Mike  Office 2007 was  a full install so i think it isnt the same case. I suspect that the root cause is that windows search service is not running. But the weird thing is i can still search for files and folders,Welcome back

You also can do this

Windows search should be put into automatic (delayed start) in services. In windows features, Indexing service should be turned OFF. In Taskbar and Start Menu properties, under Start Menu tab, click "Customize...". Under "Search other files and libraries", select Search with (or without) public folders. Check the box that says, "Search programs and Control Panel". In Indexing Options, Select "Advanced", Take a look at where the index is located under "Index Location", and decide if you want to move it or not. Click "Rebuild".

If any of these steps do not work, restart the computer. If they do not work even after this, the problem lies elsewhere.

Please let us know if this helps, Mike Hi again

Last min thought

Have any new firewall UT or AV suites been installed.

But to answer the one question you asked about the "windows search" is different than the "outlook search"

Thanks,Mike I've tried those steps but nothing works.
No new firewall UT or AV suites were installedI am still working on this

But I am assuming you have been using outlook for sometime now. Have you done a scan with your AV suite and if so have you ever used malwarebytes it is a great free tool to help get rid of MALWARE / virus etc. Here is the link just in-case you need / want it http://download.cnet.com/1770-20_4-0.html?query=malwarebytes&platformSelect=Windows&tag=srch&searchtype=downloads&filterName=platform%3DWindows&filter=platform%3DWindows because even if your AV suite comes up clean you would be surprised what MWB finds. Just install it and doing the install they give you a choice for free 15 day trial just pick Free instead.

How long ago did this issue happen like around the same time of a windows update and also are you running SP2 on office?

I am still checking I will be right back. Mike Hi again

Come to think of it do you have "google desktop search" or "windows desktop search" I have had issues on PC with those 2 programs interfering with outlook and other window programs.

Thanks Mike    There doesn't seem to be any programs interfering with outlook and other window programs. I'm actually troubleshooting for someone else do i'm not sure what was done before this happened but it has been a problem for  quite  a while.

Hi again

If this has been a problem for a while another option is to back up there PST's, Address book / contacts / signature's etc. Then re-install office.

With office 2007 if you use windows "uninstall feature" even with out backing up the pst's reboot the PC and re-install office the PST's in the profile will populate outlook automatically. (but to be safe I always back up the PST, contacts etc)

If the PST’s in outlook are to big they will run into functionality / speed issues like, searching, deleting, accessing the calendar etc.

To disable the add-ons

Goto Tools - Trust Center and click the Add-ins tab. There's a GO button at the bottom of the dialog screen, click that button and uncheck (disable or even remove) the Outlook add-ins (like GoogleDesktop, iTunes Add-in, Acrobat PDF Maker, Mindjet Mindmanager, etc) that you no longer use.

[Do not disable the Windows Search Indexing addin]

To run outlook in safe mode for testing

Start Outlook 2007 in Safe Mode

If none of the above TRICKS, try running Outlook 2007 in safe mode (start -> Run dialog and type outlook /safe). The second option is to disable all your email rules and filters. And if Norton antivirus or Zone Alarm is configured with Outlook, disable that association. One of these actions should identify the culprit that's making Outlook to crawl.

Hopefully this will help. Mike

Solve : Win Vista Starts Only When CD in Drive - into Windows Not CD?

Answer»

After a search on that model, it seems there was a recall on them to replace the motherboard, but it's not clear what the issue was. People are also claiming HP has since pulled the recall page.

I haven't been able to find anything through HP on this, so either they're right that HP pulled the page, or there never was really a recall. Who knows. That wouldn't surprise me if there was, I'll have to look into it.  I never did research on recalls, just that issue.  Thanks again for all your help!I've found several pages linking to this document which no longer exists:
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&docname=c01087277

It was supposedly the recall notice for the dv9000 series and has since been deleted.Yeah it looks like that was an overheating and/or hinge problem.  Many complain of hinges broken, and some are talking about their wireless quitting, which is an overheating issue I guess.  MAKES sense, this thing does seem to run the fan quite a bit.  The temps so far have been OK, but it may be a mobo issue, and this issue could be related to the overheating issue.  Thanks again!  Thank you for your response. You persistence and research are admirable. I wound have quit long ago.
The idea that it was a 'lemon' and had to be recalled makes sense. They could recall an item for some reasons without explaining all the reasons.
Well, I'd like to thank everyone again for their help.  I'll just continue to keep a Vista disk in it, and use it while we still can.  The only costs at this point are the hard drive, which I can take out and use in ANOTHER machine later if this one dies.

I have an HP that was purchased new, it was a year old in September.  Around December, the LCD started flashing/flickering, then  about 2 weeks later, just quit. I replaced the LCD Inverter, nothing.  So it doesn't surprise me that another HP would have major issues, our printer we had to take back within a week it was an Office Jet, these are good machines (or should be).  HP's support is one of the worst I've dealt with over the years, sad, because 10 years ago I loved their products.  Thanks again everyone for your help!Sorry we couldn't nail the cause for sure. That seemed the most likely to me, a some of those posts about the recall I found indicated the motherboard had to be replaced because of DAMAGE to the BIOS.Hi Trehahn

I know this post is quite old now, but did you ever find a solution to the problem? I have a Samsung R505 laptop doing exactly the same thing. I have tried several HDD's, different CD Drive, different versions of Windows (originally had Win Vista installed, tried installing Win 7 and get exactly same result.), BIOS updates, swap TESTED RAM, nothing makes any difference, it will only boot to Windows if i leave the Vista, or any other bootable disc, in the drive and ignore the 'Press any key to boot from CD' message.
There are no options to change any relevant settings in BIOS. I have been repairing laptops for over 10 years and this is by far the biggest challenge to date.

If anyone else out there has any other ideas i would gladly try them, having exhausted everything i can think of.

Cheers guys n gals

Tony Please do not resurrect old threads. If you have the same problem you will get much better attention if you start a new thread of your own. Thank you.Ok, Thank you, and sorry. No problem - I'll go ahead and lock this thread to avoid any confusion.

Solve : Reinstall help Window 7 please?

Answer»

Dell Vostro laptop, Dual core CPU, Windows 7 professional, 32 bit OS.  I have a virus that prevents me form loggin in on any user.  Even in safe mode.  Microsoft security essentials found it then it went berserck and took over logins.  I reinstalled Windows 7 from the disc and now when I boot it up I see 2 copies of Windows 7 listed as choices.  The FIRST one is the new one, the second is the evil one.  Can I delete the evil one?  How please.  Is there anyway to get the Office 2003 off clean from evil one as it was not on any of the discs?  I've read the forums for the past week and really can't find this particular question so if I MISSED it please direct me.  I tried Microsofts help sites with no luck.

I'm not really a techie, just not afraid to try stuff.......Start from scratch. Boot to the W7 DVD and choose the option to format before installing.thank you  I will try this today My experience with Windows is whenever you got a virus, the best way to fix it is do what Allan suggested - a clean reinstallation. The reason for that is depends on how vicious the virus is, some of them might install vicious files(codes) deep into the OS, no matter how you try to clean it up, there is no guarantee and no way to tell whether you have all malice files removed thus will CAUSE problems in long run. So make sure you have backed up all your important documents at all time.

The other strategy I suggest to my customers is, if you are somewhat tech savvy, try to buy a barebone external hard drive of the same size as your internal drive, once you do a clean reinstallation, before you even get on the net, make a clone of the boot drive to your new external drive. This way you can preserve all your documents and APPLICATIONS, thus provide you a way to do a rapid recovery without going through the painful process of reinstall all your applications. All you need to do is to swap the external drive with the contaminated internal drive - the boot drive.

Hope this helps.Thank you both.  I reinstalled with the format option which I did not notice the first time around [but it really was the FIRST time I did this!].  I do back up important document to an external hard drive but not programs which would have been extremely helpful here since I have now lost my Microsoft Office completely.  Oh well, at least I don't have to get a new computer.

I am thankful for this forum for learners like me.  Bless those of you who share your knowledge.  I also do this but on a site called Health tap for asking docs about their illnesses and symptoms.  Quote from: kawmd on July 30, 2012, 10:55:30 AM

I do back up important document to an external hard drive but not programs which would have been extremely helpful here since I have now lost my Microsoft Office completely.
It wouldn't have mattered. Programs have to be installed from scratch after a format.i think u must format your laptop both earlier and newer window...and use avast antiviurs...You may safely ignore the above post.Hello kawmd, yes for this time you do need to format your entire drive thus lose all your applications, which is pain in the *censored*. But after you do a clean reinstallation and get all the drivers ready, before you download anything to your clean installation, go to this link download this free until from Western Digital, http://support.wdc.com/product/downloaddetail.asp?swid=119&type=download&lang=en called ACRONIS True Image WD. Although it says WD, it works on any USB external harddrive, very nifty, make an image of your clean drive, so you can recover from any virus attack rapidly and save you from going bald!  And the hits just keep on comin...

Solve : Windows vista stuck on welcome screen?

My laptop is stuck in the welcome screen. Any HELP in what to do. ThanksWhat is new or different since the last time everything WORKED properly (ie, new hw, new sw, virus, error, etc)?

Can you boot to safe mode?

Have you tried booting to the Vista cd and running startup repair options?I had an update for vista service pack 1 and when it reboot it was stuck on the welcome screen.Good afternoon diegofercho21 and welcome to CH

Out of curiosity what model is your PC (i.e HP a810c etc) and what CPU (AMD or Intel) and do you know if the HD (hard DRIVE) and CD drive are IDE or SATA and is windows set / doing "ALL" updates or just "required" ones?

Here are some of the reasons on my questions!

#1...From past experience on some PC's if it has "SATA" controllers some of MS updates will cause a BSOD or freeze on the welcome screen
#2...While booting did you get ANY errors? if yes then that may be why it just stopped at the WS (welcome screen)
#3...Does the PC meet all requirements for Vista?
#4...Is "Vista" 32 or 64 bit?
#5...What is your processor (CPU) AND or Intel
#6...Is there any new hardware / software lately before the MS did it's update.

Solve : Multiple problems ~ laptop not happy!?

Answer»

Hi!
I'm really quite new to all this so please be gentle

My ASUS F5 laptop has been playing up for a while now and I've no idea what's wrong with it. I'm running windows Vista Home Premium with service pack 1.

Couple of months ago my laptop decided to stop switching off. I tried using the power button, changing the settings for the little off button thing on the start menu and all sorts of other random things. The dratted thing just keeps restarting, occasionally it might turn off from the buttons on the login page, more often than not I'd have to hold the power button in until it went off (not good I think).

This was a minor inconvenience.

More recently my internet hasnt been working right, I connect using a huwei E585 or E586 wifi dongle. I found that my internet connection was randomly switching to local only (and then back to normal) despite my dongle still being connected to the internet. Everything is slooooooow, programs take an age to start up and then freeze up randomly.

The last week or 2 firefox has started randomly crashing or freezing up, task manager says my physical memory is 100%. Then today my wireless connection has stopped working altogether, I got a message saying Windows Host stopped working. Now my mouse icon is flicking between an arrow and the little egg timer thing constantly.

I dont know where to start!?! help?Welcome

Just out of curiosity have you done any scans with programs like Malewarebytes? IF your CPU is hitting 100% that sounds like a program / software might have (what can be considered) a memory leak or you may have a bug / virus.

If the laptop is not shutting down by the power button there is an option in the power settings that can set to "shut down" or "sleep" or do "nothing" etc. I would look at those settings to see if that helps you.

Now If the laptop is shutting off on it's own it may be getting too hot. You can try shutting down the laptop and use a can of air to blow out the dust from the vents / heatsink. If this doesn't make since this is what I mean.

Shut down the laptop, and look for the vent section (where the hot air comes out) and put the straw in the canned air and blow the air into the vents and you may see a bunch of dust / dirt come out. The laptop may have an issue breathing.

Now for your issue with the Huwei (I believe they are a MiFi unit) If you got this from your ISP I think you may want to contact them maybe they have a firmware update or will replace the unit for you.

Now for Firefox a lot of times a add-on or extension will cause issue in the browser. Depending on what version of FF you are using go into the add-on's and disable all of them if FF runs normal then re-enable them one at a time until the issue starts again. If you find that a Add-on is the issue just update that plug-in / add-on. Hope this helps on that issue.

As far as windows host issue I would try starting with scanning the PC first to see if there is a bug hanging in back ground causing some of your issues.

If you want please try the above and let us know how you make out.

Good luckHi hartbeatmr, thanks for your reply

I scan the laptop every day with AVG. It hasn't picked anything up in a while, when the internet started going screwy I downloaded SpybotSD and hijack this. Neither of those found anything either :S

I tried shutting down using the power settings thing, didn't make any difference at all, it seems to just work when it feels like it, I did get a warning message once saying that CCC was causing a restart and that my drivers needed updating, which I did, it didn't fix anything. It doesn't shut off by itself but it often freezes up and I get a busy icon on the mouse pointer.

I've been in touch with my ISP (since about November last year!) they've run all sorts of checks on my line and the dongle and couldnt find any faults, they finally replaced the hardware last week, that hasn't made any difference either.

I followed all the instructions on the Firefox website for problems with freezing, crashing, using too much memory, scripts being busy (or not finishing or whatever) Again, that seemed to help very briefly but a day later I'm back to square one.

I had a chat with some guys on the chat help here last night, they suggested resetting the whole computer. I backed everything up (took bleedin' hours, I'm asking Santa for an external hard drive for Christmas!) reset back to the beginning and have spent the day reloading my important stuff. I'll add my less important stuff one thing at a time just in case there's something in there that's screwing it up.

So far *fingers crossed* all seems to be working ok It's definitely much faster than it was and nothing has randomly shut down or frozen. Firefox is working great! CPU usage is back down to under 10% and the Physical memory is sitting at between 20 and 50% (mind you I have a few things running)
Hopefully this will sort it. If not I'll be back Good Morning wickedpixie

I so happy for you that you are back and running.

Sometimes with PC's issues it is just faster and easier to back your stuff up and do a clean install

I know you know but just make sure you update MS and Office etc thru MS update, then get your AV suite up to date and then put your personal files etc back.

That is great news, Mike

  Hello again

Well it was running better, then the windows updates started and now it's back to slow slow slow I dont know what I'm doing wrong. Could there be an issue with one of the updates?

And firefox is now *censored* near ususable, it's freezing up constantly, I'm getting a timer and fuzzies and firefox has stopped responding all the time. I havent even put all three of my addons back yet :/ I can't stand IE it's vile. Any suggestions? There are many issues that can be a the root of your issue (many have already been mentioned). The fact that your AVG is NOT indicating a virus is not necessarily conclusive. This issue can be related to either a hardware and/or a software issue. I suspect you may ultimately be best served by posting your issue on the CH virus/malware forum. However if you are prepared to try a few other items first. Provided you still have internet access download/install/run a malwarebytes scan on the computer (free). Download and install another browser Firefox is known to be currently causing issues. My personal recommendation in the browser field would be Opera. I would also recommend trying another free antivirus program to see if it makes a difference. Here my recommendation would be Avast (free) or Microsoft security. If you do install another virus definition program either disable or uninstall AVG. Never run 2 antivirus programs at the same time. I would 1st do the vent inspection as has been suggested then do each of the items i am suggesting starting with the malwarebytes then one at a time the others. The process over at the virus forum will be lengthy but they are very good at what they do over there and only they NOT other members are permitted to assist. So you will bein capable hands. Please keep us informed as to your progress.truenorth Thanks Truenorth
I did try installing Google Chrome last night, once again it worked fine for an hour or so then my computer crashed completely twice in 15 minutes. I'll give opera a try.

I'll also try a different virus scanner again.

Will let you know how I get on

Quick question ~ Can I run the malwarebytes while Avast is working of do I only have one active at a time? You can run Malwarebytes with your anti virus program active. It occurred to me after my post that this could be related to something else other than presently mentioned. What is the used and available (empty) components of your "C" partition of your hard drive? If you don't know how to check that just ask.truenorth
P.S. Have you tried to run the computer in safe mode to see if it makes a difference?I ran it in safe mode for a while and it was still super slow, it's taking minutes an age for anything to open. I can go make a coffee and have a quick cig while I'm waiting for a browser :/

Have run malware and it didn't find anything. I've just loaded avast, took me 20 minutes to register it, and I'm just waiting for it to update before I scan again.

I've got 2 hard disk drives showing when I go to 'my computer': DATA (D:) 106GB free of 106GB, and VistaOS (C:) 76.3GB free of 116GB.

The laptop's quite old, and probably quite icky inside, I'm too scared to unscrew anything to try and clean it :/Well my concern that you might be low on hard drive RESOURCES has been laid to rest. Both your partitions have tons of free space.I believe that there are certain (limited) things that you can do regarding checking for possible dust inside the computer causing circulation issues (like excessive heat for example). When your computer is running do you notice that the fans seem to be running more noisily than before this happened/ I would suggest that you open all the easily accessible covers on the computer. Those where access is to ram chips and any others that are easily removable so you can examine the interior for dirt.Just make sure that the battery and the charger (in other words all power) are disconnected or removed first. Something else you can try is run a check from Crucial on what RAM is showing in the computer. The reason i suggest this is to compare against what the computer came with installed in case a RAM module has failed.Once you have done the remaining (from previous posts) and what is suggested in this one it may be time to post on the virus CH forum. But endeavor to do ALL the items thus far suggested.truenorthGood afternoon wickedpixie

I am sorry to hear all is not well after doing a fresh install.

I do see that you have 2 HD's and from what you typed on free space that may not be the issue. To have an issue so fast there has to be a reason. I agree with truenorth about using Avast and malwarebytes both are good Utilities and are free. I know you SCANNED and nothing was found.
#1... I see that you were thinking of opening up your laptop to clean it, if you have never done any laptop repairs DON'T DO IT but if you want to get some of the dust out (this is a great idea) here is a quick way not to mention will save you about 2 hrs in time vs R&R the laptop.
when you are looking at this image the fan / heatsink is in the back left of the laptop base just use a can of air with the straw and point the straw so you are blowing from the bottom of the laptop out the vents and also thru the vents into the fan. Here is a pic showing it Another thing if you have a toothpick just put it in the bottom of the laptop to hold the fan still while blowing air in if it can be avoided the fan should NOT be able to spin freely the reason i am saying this is if the fan is allowed to free spin at high speeds for to long of a period (like when using air / compressed air) the fan can be damaged. If the toothpick will not fit in the bottom of the laptop fan slots / grid you can use something else like a paperclip so just insert them just far enough (about 3/8" to 1/2") in most cases to hold the fan still. The toothpick or paperclip is going to be in-between the fan blades.

Now I am not trying to be a wiseguy but you are running just 1 AV (besides MWB) so if you are using Avast your old AV was removed and something that you may not be aware of almost all major AV companies also have a separate removal tools / UT. So for instance after the fresh install say the PC came with Norton AV and then you used the windows UN-install and rebooted in my opinion would run the tool that they offer and if at all possible only get the tool / UT from the COMPANY that made the software like for norton it is here https://www-secure.symantec.com/norton-support/jsp/help-solutions.jsp?docid=kb20080710133834EN_EndUserProfile_en_us&product=home&pvid=f-home&version=1&lg=english&ct=us

Thru your ISP do you know what your speeds should be like down here by me RR the normal speeds are 15mb down and about 1.5 to 5mb out. Also in your "device Manager" is there any yellow ! or an item disabled? Something else when you have the device manager open look up top of that box and click on "view" then pick show "hidden devices" is there anything now in the list with a yellow ! or disabled item?

Besides the laptop being really slow (since fresh install) have you got any errors

Your laptop normally came with 1gig of ram which in my opinion is not that much because vista but still should be running with out to much of an issue and have you run any memory test tools? to see maybe if one of the memory sticks is your issue.

Hopefully this will help you, Mike     Hi Guys

Having no luck at all at the moment. I'm trying to uninstal AVG so I can run Avast and it's crashed 3 times :/ Then it wouldnt switch back on. Managed to get it up again after a tea and calm-down-before-you-lob-it-out-the-window break.

Yes, my fan is super noisy. Where can I get one of those squirty cans from?

And yes, norton was on here, some trial version, I uninstalled it and as far as I could see all the files were gone but I'll definitely run the removal tool just to make sure.

How can I find out how much RAM is on here?
The laptop was a christmas pressie off my mum and she said the guy had put loads of EXTRAS in here so I could use it for my artwork. I'm guessing that was extra memory and whatnot. Quote from: wickedpixie on July 23, 2012, 11:50:58 AM

How can I find out how much RAM is on here?
Right click on Computer and select Properties.  That screen will tell you how much memory is installed.

I had a chat with some guys on the chat help here last night, they suggested resetting the whole computer. I backed everything up (took bleedin' hours, I'm asking Santa for an external hard drive for Christmas!) reset back to the beginning and have spent the day reloading my important stuff.
Exactly what does "reset" mean?  Did that take you back to Vista, pre-Service Pack (SP) 1?  If so, did you then REINSTALL SP1 via Windows Update?  Have you ever installed Service Pack 2 on that computer?  Hi Soybean.

Thanks I have 2GB of RAM.

And yes, I completely reset the whole laptop so it was like when I had it new. Windows found 118 updates when I got my internet working :/ Took all afternoon to load them in and that's when the hastle started again.  Every time I restart it finds more updates, it's just decided I need SP2 but every time I try and download it everything freezes up again.

Finally got AVG off and Avast is busy checking everything now.

Incidentally, now I've removed AVG my internet is working better :SAre you getting SP2 via Windows Update?  You could download it from http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows/downloads/service-packs.  You need to know whether you need the 32-bit or 64-bit version.  I believe right clicking on Computer and selecting Properties will show you whether you have 32-bit or 64-bit version of Vista.

Solve : Install Windows 7 via Flash Drive?

Answer»

I have a Sony VGC-RB50 currently running Windows XP. I have a flash drive with Windows 7 on it and want to install it, as well as remove all currently existing partitions and files.

I have the USB drive plugged in. At startup I press F2 to enter BIOS and change the Boot Order. I set the 1st option to "Removable DEV.", then hit F10 to Save and Restart.

The computer SEEMS to ignore this change and continues to load Windows XP. I have 6 USB PORTS and I've tried all of them. Any ideas?Well, a few questions.
Why not install Windows 7 from your DVD?
And how did you get Windows 7 on a USB?
You may have already read this:
http://www.intowindows.com/how-to-install-windows-7vista-from-usb-drive-detailed-100-working-guide/
this tool from microsoft: http://www.microsoftstore.com/store/msstore/html/pbPage.Help_Win7_usbdvd_dwnTool
the Windows 7 USB/DVD Download Tool, saves a windows 7 (or iso to a USB key or a DVD. if you used a different tool, it might be a better idea to use microsoft's own.

Anyway, if the issue is booting from the key, try pressing F10 to open 'boot menu' when you see the sony logo. The exact key should be displayed near the message to press F2 for setup. If you have this option, it should let you pick USB key to boot and override the BIOS settings, which might not be being saved properly.Hey guys, the issue is resolved. My computer just isn't able to boot from USB because it's pretty old and the FEATURE wasn't used MUCH then, around 7 years ago. I bought a blank DVD and all is fine now. Thanks!

Solve : Computer boots fine into vista but not 7?

Answer»

So i'm building a computer for my friend from spare parts. Just as a preliminary test, we set up an i7 920 stock on a MSI X58 Pro-E motherboard, with 4gb kingston ddr3 1333mhz, and an old geforce 9600GSO. The rig is running off a Maxpower Vortec 750W psu (overkill, i KNOW - but as i said, spare parts).

We connected one of his notebook HARDDRIVES (hitachi 5400RPM 320gb SATA2 i think) with windows 7 installed, but upon the "starting windows" screen it freezes then reboots - indefinitely. Not sure if his is 64-bit or 32, but safe-boot doesn't work either, the computer simply crashes and reboots when loading the files.

Curious, I connected one of my notebook's drives (SEAGATE 160gb SATA2 5400rpm) with windows vista 32-bit installed. The computer booted fine, and after various cpu and gpu stress tests I concluded that the components seem to be working properly and the PSU is not faulty.

I then connected a third notebook drive of mine (not his) that had windows 7 x64 installed, but the exact same crash happened again!

So for some reason, it seems windows vista 32-bit boots fine, but both drives with windows 7 x64-bit crashes indefinitely on boot.

Any ideas? Quote

I'm surprised that worked. You're not supposed to be able to do that. You didn't get any error messages?Good afternoon JXY and welcome to CH

Here is a little info that may help you some just in case you don't know

The laptop HD that you plugged in when it froze that had windows on it. It is possible that the laptop BIOS was set to ACHI instead of IDE and then the desktop BIOS is set to IDE mode and when you tried to start it that would just stop and wouldn't be able to go any further (BSOD). The settings I am talking about is for the HD just like a lot of aftermarket like your MSI

If you go into the MSI BIOS and once you are in there look around for drive settings there should be  something like "IDE or SATA mode" that can affect the way the PC boots the HD that you were testing with.

This would ALSO hold true for older IDE HD's. If the HD jumper is set with "no jumper" so it is master and the OS is installed then say later on you decide add another HD so you have to put a jumper in the master HD and then you try to start the PC in most cases the PC will not start up. But the jumper setting varies from HD manufacture and date of the HD was made.

Sorry i can't remember it exactly on that setting but any who if the OS was installed as sata mode or if the OS was installed in IDE mode for the OS this does make a difference. All thou Windows 7 is better than XP 99% of the time if you have a PC set up with windows and then you transfer that HD to another PC it will blue screen and not run.

But just in-case you don't now if you set up a PC with windows 7 if you are using a 32 bit OS then use 32 drivers and the same holds true for 64 bit.

Hopefully this does help you under stand a little better about how the PC will start up.        Thanks for the responses guys. Yeah i was thinking along the same lines as you hartbeatmr, except digging through the BIOS i just couldn't find drive settings that allowed me to switch from IDE to AHCI or whatnot. I'll keep looking, but i'm almost positive there isn't such an option.

You didn't get any error messages?

Nope, it just booted as you'd expect it to. Strange, isn't it?The only BIOS setting that i found was for RAID arrays, with three options: IDE, RAID and AHCI. I changed it from IDE to AHCI not thinking it was relevant (since i'm not running a RAID array), but it worked! i've now booted into the windows 7 disk.....strange...very strange....

Thanks Hartbeatmr and JJ3000, i really do appreciate the help.Sounds like you might have a hardware driver issue. Have you tried this: install a fresh copy of Win 7 from MS DVD. This is a very generic OS without any hardware specific drivers, it should boot up without problem although the display might look funny and your hardware might not work yet, then go to device manager to find out what devices need driver, your first thing to do is to find out what network driver you need if the Win 7 generic network driver does not work for your network card or onboard network. once you get on the net, you can search for individual driver for your specific hardware such as audio, video wifi printer etc. If you are lucky, Win7 might even find it for you.He solved it if you re-read his Post...
