1 What you need to do is look at DIFFERENT manufacturer's websites, such as Toshiba or Acer or whoever, and see what they have to offer. A lot of this is just minimum specs you've just copied and pasted from AutoCAD's website.

Start with a budget: How much do you want to SPEND on this laptop? Then, as I said, go to the websites and find the one that suits your needs and your budget. Some companies even let you mix and match certain components to get what you need. You've already seen what the minimum specs are obviously, so go from there.

If you see some LAPTOPS and have questions about which specific model might suit your needs better, feel free to ask. As vague as your question is now though, you won't really get any useful answers.Building a laptop ? ?

Solve : IE9 video doesn't go completely full screen?

Answer»

Another post. Yay.

http://i.imgur.com/G63a1.jpg

This is after I hit the full screen button. Nothing except the VIDEO should be showing but this happens for every single video. Any fixes?

I've tried a few other sites like dailymotion and the full screen works there. So, there's something happening between IE9/Youtube or W7/Youtube, or all 3. I don't have another browser, but if anyone else does, and youtube goes full screen properly, then we can safely say the issue is IE9/Youtube. I'm pretty sure this is the case.

I'm not interested in switching browsers. I'll save that as an absolute last resort.Good evening toejamtea and welcome to CH

I went to "YouTube" USING IE8 (I know you are using IE9) and to see if the full screen mode works and it does in IE8 I am assuming it should in IE9 also. When you are viewing a video clip "YouTube ETC" from websites and hit "full screen" the top and bottom bars should disappear a few seconds later but if the MOUSE is moved the bars will come back.

Try disabling "All add-ons" in IE there may be one stopping you from using this function.

If that doesn't work and If you are using a wireless mouse try UN-plugging it and then try view the video clip again.

Please let us know how you make out, Mike Hey hartbeatmr, thanks for all your help. I already had all add-ons disabled, except what was needed for videos. I'm not entirely sure what the problem was but it stopped happening. I didn't restart, clear any data or anything. I literally did nothing and it's fine now. Given that, I think it was youtube/HTML5 related and not IE9.

Thanks again! CH has been very accomodating and useful.Good evening toejamtea

You are very welcome if it ever comes up again, please come back we will help out again.

Sorry I as not able to fix it for you but I am very glad it is fixed, Mike

Solve : Xp compabillity mode in Vista, help!?

Answer»

Hi everyone!

So today I decided to try out my ( now quite old) keyboard from Zboard. However the keyboard itself is working fine just by using it, but in order to be able to use the additional hotkeys I need to run the installation disc for it. But when I run the installation disc i get an error saying that ''Zboard is currently compatiable with the following operation systems: Windows 98/ME/2000/XP. Installation will not proceed.

I know that in vista you are able to run other programs that are already installed on you pc by simply changing the compabillity mode under properties of the PROGRAM.
Now this option does not exist when loading from a CD, is there anyway to get around it and running the CD in XP mode?

All response appreciated! There's a difference between running a program in XP mode or trying to install a driver that isn't designed for the OS. You need to see if the keyboard manufacturer has an updated driver. The problem is they have no updated drivers, the cd is all i got... so there is no way around it? except installing XP?The solution is a new keyboard...good evening Zim0n

There maybe one thing you can try (Please make a restore point FIRST and have a good back up)

IF any of the software did install remove it (including short cuts, program list etc)
Un-plug the keyboard
ReBoot PC and then put the CD in the Drive (don't let it auto run) and close all dialog boxes if any are open.
Then in your doc folder (where ever you want it) make a new folder and copy the whole contents of the CD in put it in that folder, then leave the CD in the drive. Then LOOK for the (setup.exe etc) "right click it" and choose properties, then go to the compatibility tab and "pick run as XP" let it install. Then after the software installs you may have to set that short cut for "XP compatibility mode also.

I don't know if this will work for this but I have done this for older CAD programs, older software etc

Please let us know if this worked for you. Don't forget "create a restore point and have a GOOD back up

Mike There is an updated driver for the Zboard keyboard if you have the USB version. Steelseries bought out Ideazon years ago and now produces the drivers for it. However, if you have the even older PS/2 version, XP drivers are the best you can get.

If it happens that you have the PS/2 version, you get buy the Steelseries SHIFT keyboard ($89.99 retail) and your old keysets will still work with the new keyboard. If you don't want to spend so much on a new keyboard, you can also find a number of them on eBay for various PRICES. The keysets are cross-compatible with the original Ideazon PS/2 and USB keyboards, Steelseries Zboard USB, and Steelseries SHIFT (USB) keyboards.

The Steelseries USB and Zboard USB keyboards are identical except for the rebranding. The Shift version has a slight design change, but is still completely compatible as I said.

You can download updated drivers from Steelseries here:
http://steelseries.com/support/downloads

Just scroll down, select the keyboard you have, then click the download link that will appear at the bottom.

(I know all this because I've had a Zboard for years. Some of the sensors stopped working, but I have many keysets. I'll be replacing it with a Shift board soon.)

Oh, I should add that if you have a PS/2 version, even if you get the driver to install, the keyboard will not work correctly. It must be the USB version if you're using anything after XP. Quote

The OP might try a PS/2 to USB adapter. Much less investment. About $5 or even less. Quote from: Geek-9pm on August 02, 2012, 10:07:07 PM

People have tried that. It won't work with the Zboard PS/2 keyboards. The keyboards require special software for full functionality and the PS/2 won't be recognized correctly on OSes later than XP, even if using an adapter. A problem Ideazon said they wouldn't try to fix and a headache Steelseries decided not to bother with since the PS/2 boards were no longer manufactered and scarcely available.quaxo,

I used to own a PS/2 one and had the same problem when MOVING from XP, that's why I had to get my USB one, which I eventually wore out. Now I've got about 10 keysets and nothing to use them on. Getting a Shift soon though. It's a great gaming keyboard.

Solve : mouse/cursor issues at start up.?

Answer»

I have a Dell COMPUTER about 3 yrs old. Use AVG for virus PROTECTION. Windows Vista.
A few days ago when I start using computer from sleep mode, the mouse arrow is erratic. I MOVE the mouse, but the cursor/arrow is delayed in it's movement. The circle is turning at the arrow/cursor, showing it's in progress. This takes 3-5 mins to before it starts performing correctly.
During this time, I can't activate anything...try clicking on IE if I can get the pointer to land on it, but it takes a long time for anything to start working. After about 5 mins. of this, things start working properly.
I"ve run Spybot, and DOWNLOADED another program to clean my pc (forget the name of it at the moment as I'm not at my home computer). NEITHER has helped. It's very annoying.
Anyone have suggestions? Thank you. 1) Spybot is useless. The current best of breed anti-malware apps are MalwareBytes & SuperAntiSpyware
2) Did you run a full scan with AVG?
3) Download and run a full scan with MalwareBytes
4) I'd like to know what you downloaded and ran to "clean" your pc.
5) What happens in safe mode?

Solve : problem with windows media player?

Answer»

hello,
i m using win 7 64 bit....
while PLAYING 128 bits mp3s, i observed that there is some problem with wmp ascit gives some effect likev PLAY and pause again and again.....actually it usedcto skip some part of music files and plays some........
as if example ........
as long as you love me.........seems to b as lo...as .......lo...me

same files plays well if used with winamp and vlc media player.....
scaned with mse and mbam found nothing......

any help will be appreciated........
thxGood morning namsnice and welcome to CH

If I am understanding your post the music will play (With Winamp / VLC etc) correctly with no "pausing / skipping" there maybe a CORRUPTED codec. A good free codec package that I have used for years is http://www.mediacodec.org/download/ and best of all it's free and if you decide to INSTALL them here is what you need to do.

#1... Look for the 64 bit version and then download and save it (Remember where you downloaded it to )
#2... Close all your browsers
#3... It will install very quick and if you would like to see screen shots of the install just look at this web page first http://www.mediacodec.org/ just scroll down and you will see the set up boxes.

Please come back and let us know how you make out, Mike thanks mike/hatbeatmr,
i got my problem solved..
it seems that the earlier codecs i had, which was the similar one, got corrupted somehow.
thx for ur link and SUPPORT....
thumbs up!Good day namsnice and welcome back

I am very happy you are back in business.

Please let us know if we can help you with anything else, Mike oopz....
i am sorry to inform u mike that after three four playbacks it comes to its original colours and again started to do same...
alternatively i removed those128 bps songs and used the 320 bps version....
those are perfect....
by the way mike thanks for ur kind attention.

1. Right click a drive in Windows Explorer
2. Click on Properties - Tools - Defragment Now - Configure Schedule
3. Click on Select Disks and check that only hard drives are listed, and uncheck new disks
4. Set the scheduled time you want
OK;

done that,

when I clicked to open the "Configure Schedule"

the "another program" was PROBABLY the HP "tune up" util. aka system pre-load bloatware
which I had already turned off on day one of SETUP

good thing I'm not freaked out by dialog boxes
clicked the "remove settings" to set it back to normal

all disks were checked for schedule

- just another example of the newer version isn't always an improvement
too many buried settings to "find" to shut stuff off that shouldn't be on / enabled in the FIRST place
C:\ or the Winders install location should be the only "disk" / partition enabled by default

cheers I've been using Windows 7 for 2 years after having used XP for 8 years, and I would never go back. Just stay with it. It is a vastly better operating system.

Solve : SB Audigy LS MIDI?

Answer»

Hey everyone, I recently upgraded to 7 from XP and have been trying to configure things to my liking. I've run into a problem I can't seem to fix, so I'm hoping someone can help.

I have an SB Audigy LS sound card. It's fairly old, but it does the job for me. Unfortunately, I can't seem change the default MIDI output from "Microsoft GS Wavetable Synth".

To be a little more focused on the exact issue (still W7 related, not the program) I use a program called Guitar Pro to create sheet music and hear what I'm writing. In the programs Options menu there is a "MIDI Outputs" section where, back in XP, I could choose between the Microsoft Synth or the SB Audigy LS MIDI Synth. The SB option is completely gone and I really can't stand the sound of the MS-GS synth. I'm not plugging in any instruments to my computer or transfering the MIDI anywhere. I simply want my computer speakers to play the Audigy LS MIDI Synth.

Any ideas? I've read something about a registry hack, but I've yet to find details on it.Good evening toejamtea and welcome to CH

Your sound card is W7 compatible which is good!

If I am understanding your post the option is "greyed out" or "not there" to change the midi. When you installed the card did you use just the "windows drivers" or did you get software / drivers from http://support.creative.com/Products/ProductDetails.aspx?catID=1&subCatID=205&prodID=10365&prodName=Audigy%20LS%20%28SE%29&subCatName=Audigy&CatName=Sound+Blaster on the link there is (2) separate downloads (1) for drivers and (1) for the software / application.

It is possible you are just missing the software needed to make these changes even KNOWING Windows 7 will install (generic) drivers. Please let us know how you make out, Mike Hey hartbeatmr, you're correct, I let W7 install the Creative drivers on its own. Then I tried uninstalling them and downloading the drivers from the site and ended up with the same result. I figured maybe it needed the software so I uninstalled them again and then used the CD that came with my card, but the setup.exe would tell me that there was no Creative hardware installed. Then I tried installing just the drivers first, then put the CD in to try to get the software, but it still gave me the same No Creative Hardware message.

I tried the programs you linked me to, Alchemy and WaveStudio. They installed fine and work but neither has anything to do with MIDI control. Alchemy is for game sound and WaveStudio is an editing sofware, so ultimately the result is still the same and I'm unable to change the MIDI output in GuitarPro. I didn't notice them on the site when I downloaded the drivers, so it was worth a shot. Thanks for pointing them out. I'm going to look for the EAX software next, though I don't remember that controlling MIDI either, it just added effects to sound such as theatre or stadium sound.

However, with a program called Timidity++ I accomplished a few things. Timidity++ shows up as a second option in the guitarpro MIDI setup options. Unfortunately, it doesn't actually change the sound, it still USES the MS GS default midi. What it does let me do is save guitarpro files as midi and then play them through Timidity++ with with the soundfont of my choosing. But this is more so intercepting the sound data of t he file than actually changing anything. This interception would be useful if it could happen in real time, not just with a saved file. Ultimately this is very inconvenient because it takes away the ability to hear what I'm writing as I'm writing it with the midi soundfont of my choice. I'd have to write a part of a song, then export it, then open Timidity++ to hear it with good MIDI, then go back to guitarpro and repeat. It's going to drastically decrease productivity.

After hours of research the issue seems to be W7 removing the ability for the user to change MIDI output, except through some registry hack. Unfortunately, no one who has mentioned the hack/edit has actually posted steps to do it. Any ideas? I'm very familiar with registry editing, so it's not something I'm worried about screwing up. I'd love to give this a shot if I knew how.

Also, I read somewhere that on W7 the MS GS Synth is located in a .cab file. This should be a .sf2 file then. Is it possible to open said .cab file, delete the MS .sf2 file and replace it with one of my choosing? I've never tried editing a .cab file before.Good evening toejamtea

I am still looking I figured that would have worked but I will be back. But I do have a couple of questions

#1... What model PC is this (HP a810c / Dell E521 etc)
#2... before any drivers are installed on the PC the chipset drivers need to be done first.
#3... Not is matters for your card but for the software it may what bit version of W7 do you have (32 bit or 64 bit Windows 7)
#4... If this is a custom PC what is the model of the MoBo (ms-7104 etc) this is silk screened on the board sometimes they are written in white.

But did you do the drivers from there the software you installed (Alchemy and WaveStudio) is lower down on the page above them is the drivers

Please let us know and either my self or some one else will be back, Mike Good evening toejamtea

I think I found the solution for you it COMES highly rated http://nomoregoatsoup.wordpress.com/2010/03/17/daniel_ks-sb-audigy-support-pack-3-7/

From what I am finding out this fixes "midi connection issues" & "software issues" & "DDL & DTS encoding" etc

Please remember do make "restore point" you should be fine BUT just in-case. Mike Hey again hartbeatmr, thank so much for being so attentive to this issue of mine.

Here's the info you requested:

1. Sony VGC-RB50
2.
3. 32 bit Windows 7 Home Premium SP1
4. It is not a custom PC. CPU-Z says of the Mainboard:

Brand: Intel D915GRO AAC89748-202
Chipset: Intel i915/i915G Rev. B1
Southbridge: Intel 82801FB (ICH6) Rev. 03
LPCIO: SMSC LPC47M182
BIOS: EV91510A.04T.0064.2005.0816.1946
Date: 08/16/2005

I'm going to see if there's a BIOS update available, but I'm fairly certain this is the most up-to-date for my computer.

Yes, I did download and install the drivers from the website when I realized the drivers W7 downloaded on it's own weren't giving me the results I wanted. And yes, I mentioned above that I did install the programs, too, and said that they in no way effect MIDI output. So, from the support.creative.com website, I have the 1st, 3rd, and 4th installed. The 2nd is for XP or Vista. I hope this is clear now.

Also, in XP you could open the speaker icon in the system tray and work your way through the properties to choose your Playback and Recording Devices. In the Playback section, there was a specific selection for MIDI output where it was by default the Microsoft WaveSynth, but it had a drop down list to change it to whatever MIDI soundfonts you had installed. This option is completely gone in W7. I can't even see that MS WaveSynth is the default through W7 itself. The only reason I know it's the one is because I know the sound (it's really that bad, you never forget it) and also guitarpro has it's own MIDI Setup Menu which mirrors the MIDI Playback menu. This menu only lists the MS WaveSynth and the Timid++ that I mentioned last post. So, nothing is greyed out. It's entirely missing. There's no option for adjustment or change of the default MIDI playback.

As for the new link you've provided to the No More Goat Soup website, I have already been there. Unfortunately, the list of cards they mention doesn't include my Audigy LS. And yes, I did try to install it anyway but it crashed the computer. There is a link below the listed cards that mentions my Audigy LS specifically, but the link is only to the Creative forums. I bookmarked the site a few hours ago and was planned to sign up for it after hearing back from you. It seems like the creative forums will be more appropriate and likely to produce some kind of result. Though, I'm pretty certain that W7 has simply blocked the ability to change MIDI output.

Did you happen to have any luck finding the registry hack/edit I mentioned? That's so far the only bit of hope I have for this to work.

You're a god send if you can find that! I'm off to check on the Creative forums and see what happens. I'll post back here when I have a definitive result of either a fix, registry hack/edit, or a big W7 GFYS. At least then it can be archived and in the event some similar situation comes up, the solution will be quickly available.

Again, I appreciate so much all you've been doing! This problem is frustrating as *censored* and I have the computer physically with me. I can only imagine how much it annoys you having to work even less than remotely! Again, Thank you, Mike! Please let me know if you find that registry hack/edit.Good afternoon toejamtea

Sorry on the delay: with everything that you have attempted and have done and still don't have the ability to make the change. I do have a question for you.

Thank you for the system info that you supplied.

Please bear with me there is a reason to my madness

#1... In the info you put in I see that you have a 900 / 910 / 915 series chipset from Intel I do know that the very first time (about 1.5 + years ago) I had installed W7 in that chip set it was very hard to finding the chipset drivers. Windows 7 loads / installs a generic set did you install the chipset drivers. If the correct chipset drivers are not installed the OS will not know how to handle / pass on the "inf" (info that the OS needs to interpret for hardware) for all add-on cards / devices to run / setup. It has been so long since I have installed W7 on a 900 series I don't even remember where I got it from. I still may have it on my external HD but I would have to look

#2... I would (if not done already) install the Chipset drivers (from Intel) then sound card drivers and then the sound card software (Intel does not have them on the site ). I did end up finding them from doing a "Google" search

#3... I would also go into the BIOS and disable the on-board sound card.

#4... I personally don't think in your case a BIOS update would do any good. That is up to you that would be a last resort.

#5... Making this change may be a limitation of W7 like you stated with out doing a reg hack and I have not found that reg mod yet!

There is a program called "Drivermax" Free and paid version. (I have not used it) but gets a a lot of good reviews for finding / updating drivers.

I will still keep on digging. Mike Because of WASAPI and changes to the audio architecture, the capability to choose and change soundfonts from the actual Creative driver itself is not available. Instead, you need to install a separate "Soundfont Bank Manager" program, which I believe performs the appropriate swapping of the actual sound banks.

That said, in my case all programs that support MIDI both have the default Roland (MS GM Synth) as well as a few from my X-Fi sound card (SB X-Fi Synth A and X-Fi Synth B, as well as X-Fi MIDI out (which is a physical MIDI out on the sound card itself). These options were present even without the Soundfont manager program installed. Synth A uses the soundfont bank I choose in the manager; Synth B seems to use the original default soundfont bank (or is an option to change I have not found and still uses the default).

Obviously the two Synths always sound better than the default software synth. I've never seen a way to change the soundfont used by the software synth, though.

Good evening BC_Programmer

Very nice, very nice write up.

I was not aware of those changes. From what I am finding it is a limitation WASAPI. Did MS make this change for quality or security? I do now that even the simple items like changing the start up sound(s) can not be changed with out mod to the dll file. The same holds true for the appearance of WMP that too has to be changed in the reg.

Thanks a learned something new Quote from: hartbeatmr on August 04, 2012, 03:49:46 PM

Did MS make this change for quality or security?
The changes, IMO, where sorely needed. Consider some of the history of Audio in Windows. Originally, it was introduced in Windows 3.1 with the "Multimedia Extensions for Windows". At the time, only one application at a time could play audio, and that was because the original design didn't have support for tracking or mixing of audio streams. This is why some older-designed programs will often give a message that another program is using the device when it encounters and error.

With Windows 95 and NT, the same APIs were "stretched" to 32-bits (for win32 as opposed to the older Win16). But the basic design wasn't changed- only one application could play audio at a time.

Windows 98 actually changed this, and deployed a entirely new audio software design, based on the newer "Windows Driver Model" (WDM). As part of this, they added the ability to mix audio streams- providing, for the first time, the capability to have multiple applications give audio output simultaneously.

Thing is, this basic infrastructure remained all the way through Windows XP. Some might- and I agree- that "well, if it isn't broken, don't fix it", but in many ways, it was broken. One of the big issues was that a lot of the code ran at the highest privilege level in kernel mode. This had two issues- first, it meant that there was a lot of switching to and from kernel mode, and it also meant that a sound-related bug or a bug with a sound driver could take down the entire machine (via a BSOD). Another big problem is that while the audio quality was fine for your "normal" users, pro-audio enthusiasts, sound composers, and music artists were less than happy with the way sound was dealt with. At the time, this made Windows less desirable for things like sound composing and MIDI stuff than Mac OS. Another problem was that the Control panels and other audio related UI was really confusing and Sound issues were often difficult to diagnose. Vista's introduction of "WASAPI" (or rather, a new Windows Audio System) addressed these by first moving the entire audio stack out of kernel mode and into user mode. This IMO actually did a lot for reliability. Programs like FLStudio can easily bluescreen on XP machines due to driver issues or issues with even the software itself, but with Vista those programs crash (and they might cause problems with audio) but the system itself stays up. The second change was to completely rework the UI; a lot of it was rewritten completely; and that isn't to mention the new capabilities such as changing the volumes of individual programs.

Quote
I do now that even the simple items like changing the start up sound(s) can not be changed with out mod to the dll file.
I think this was changed to keep some "brand" to the sound. IMO it's rather dumb but it's also separate from the sound system itself- I mean, this decision is not part of the Audio System but probably made by somebody on the Shell team. Or probably somebody in marketing.

Honestly I didn't even know this was changed- I hadn't even noticed. When I SAW the above quoted text I went to the sound menu to get a screenshot of the "Windows Startup" item that I was sure was there but of course it was not there.

Rather silly that I can change the sound of a breakpoint in Visual Studio in that sound panel but can only set whether the startup sound is on or off.hartbeatmr:

I will give Drivermax a try and see how it goes. The problem is thoroughly frustrating and I've yet to fix it, but I've not been on it the past day or so. I plan to get on it during the week and see what I can do. For now, I'll try Drivermax and see if it can download the Intel Chipset (I doubt it?) or whatever else driver I may need. I'm certain I have all of the proper drivers for my Audigy card, though. As for the Audigy software, only some of it will install for W7. On the Creative site, they state that they've dropped continued support for that card, so there won't be any addition of the few other programs such as EAX for any OS past Vista.

As for disabling the onboard sound card, it's not in use, though not disabled. I'll give it a shot, but the result I'm expecting is either nothing changing or it'll disable the ability to hear even the generic MS MIDI sound.

I'll let you know.

BC_Programmer:

Thanks for the response. I think you may be a bit unclear of my issue, or I'm unclear on your post. My issues isn't switching from Creative soundfonts to something else. The issue is that I cannot switch TO my Creative soundfont. It's stuck on the generic Microsoft GS Wavetable Synth, which as you know sounds terrible.

As well, in my Device Manager, my "PCI Input Device" has the yellow exclamation triangle on it. This happened on WindowsXP as well, but it was fixed by uninstalling all drivers and reinstalling through the CD. Unfortunately, the CD will not install on Windows7. If I force it to, it crashes the computer to BSoD and upon restart, it deletes whatever it did to cause the crash.

How old is your X-Fi card? My Audigy LS is very old. I bought it in 2004/2005, maybe even as early as 2003. It's done everything I needed it to for years and I love the MIDI sound of it. I don't use any external MIDI hardware such as keyboards or anything like that. I use one program called GuitarPro with which I input the notes by hand on my computer keyboard. The program can play back to me what I put in. In XP I had multiple options, but now only the MS Wavetable Synth.

When you say, "I've never seen a way to change the soundfont used by the software synth", are you refering to the "Soundfont Bank Manager", or to any software that plays back MIDI soundfont? Finally found a fix, to a degree.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fTHwxXpHEeY

I'm not running 64-bit, so I stopped when he got to that part. This has allowed me to use the soundfont that I installed to the Timidity++ driver/software. With Timidity I'm able to edit a .cfg file to input whatever .sf2 file I want. With the registry hack in the video, it makes the guitarpro program play back the Timidity++ soundfont rather than the MS Wavesynth soundfont.

So. ALMOST there. Now I just need to find the soundfont files for the SB Audigy cards. My guess is that they're somewhere in the drivers. When I was running XP in about 2009, an update to the driver was released and I got it through Windows Update. After install, my MIDI sound was completely different than what I originally had and I didn't like it, so I had to revert back to the previous driver.

Is there a way to extract the .sf2 files from the driver install files? Finally solved! Considering that CH seems to be the first place to figure this out, perhaps it's worthwhile to sticky this for any person looking for the same solution. As we've painstakingly found out, there's no comprehensive guide, most recommendations simply do not work. Now we have the solution! So, here it is:

___________________________

This may seem like a lot, but it's very easy.

Before starting, you need to download and install 2 programs:
-DosBox
-Timidity++

They're an easy google find. You don't need them running immediately after install.

As well, you need to:
-Have a .mid file on hand for testing
-Make sure your sound card drivers are already completely up to date

Next:

1) Download the driver you think/know has the MIDI Soundfont you desire. If you're unsure, download all drivers you can find for your card. DO NOT INSTALL ANY OF THE DRIVERS YOU DOWNLOAD.

2) Right click on the driver you downloaded and choose, "Extract to XXXX/" (where XXXX is the name of the driver exe file). Do this for each driver you download, being sure to put them all in their own separate folder.

4) Open the folder that the extraction created and use Ctrl-F to find anything called "sf2". There maybe multiple.

5) Move all sf2 files into the "C:\...\...\timidity\Musix" folder or wherever Timidity++ is installed for you. It's fine to rename the soundfonts to anything. Rename any sf2 files that happen to have the same name.

6) In the "Musix" folder, make a copy of, and then open, "timidity.cfg" and erase anything it says, then edit and save to the following:

dir "C:\...\...\Musix" (or whatever the path is to your Musix folder)

soundfont "XXXXX.SF2" (where XXXX is the name of the .sf2 file you want to use)

#extension opt -Od
#extension opt -O0
#extension opt -U
#extension opt -o0
#extension opt -o0

--I struck these out because I don't think you NEED to add them, they should add themselves once you've gotten to step 8. If it doesn't work when you leave it out, try again with them included.

7) In the main Timidity++ folder, open "timw32g.exe".

Open your .mid file in Timidity++ and press play. If this isn't the right soundfont, go back to the timidity.cfg and edit in a new sf2 file name. Once you find the one you want, you can close Timidity++.

___________________________

From here, you can do 2 things. Contine to read this, or go watch this video as it shows everything I'm about to say.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fTHwxXpHEeY&feature=player_detailpage#t=66s
--You don't need to worry about anything he did before the start time of the video. He was just downloading DosBox and the driver and soundfont he wanted.

9) Open DosBox and type in "mixer /listmidi" without the quotes. A list of all MIDI devices will appear. Take note of what # is next to Timidity++.

10) In Start Menu "Search Programs and Files" type in "regedit" and hit enter.

11) Navigate to:

-[HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Microsoft/ActiveMovie/devenum/{4EFE2452-168A-11D1-BC76-00C04FB9453B}]
--Before continung, export "ActiveMovie" in case something goes wrong.

12) Open "Default MidiOut Device". On the right side of regedit, locate and double-click "MidiOutId". Edit the value to the # that was next to Timidity++ in DosBox.

13) On the left side of regedit, locate "Microsoft GS Wavetable Synth" and locate it's "MidiOutId" on the right side and double-click. Edit the value to one number higher than the highest number that showed up in DosBox.

14) 64-bit users will need to repeat steps 12 and 13 in:
-[HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Microsoft/ActiveMovie/devenum 64-bit/{4EFE2452-168A-11D1-BC76-00C04FB9453B}]

15) Restart your computer.

16) Open your program/software that will play back your MIDI and set the default MIDI device to "Timidity++"

You're done!
___________________________

Now any program that plays MIDI back to you should now use the soundfont assoicated with Timidity++ rather than whatever had originally been playing.

I really must extend a thanks to hartbeatmr who spent a lot of time researching this with me. Not many people are willing to really dedicate themselves to others issues, especially not ones that seem so impossible like this one did. Thanks, hartbeatmr!Good day toejamtea and welcome back

I am very happy that you are all set with your issue.

I have not tried your instructions that you wrote up and when I get a chance I will.

Please come back if there is anything else that we can help you with, Mike

Solve : Windows 7 x64 not responding randomly?

Answer»

So I have this problem with computer freezing randomly and recently a lot of programs started not responding once every5-10minutes, thought maybe I had a driver issue so I re-installed my windows and drivers COMPLETELY... Didn't help at all...
I have an Asus x52JE laptop and I installed drivers from the manufacturer site as well as windows update - didn't help as well...
It is utterly irritating when I try to watch youtube videos or play games that ran quite well, only a few days ago I started having these problems which make usage of this laptop completely unbearable...
I had issues with freezing since I bought this computer but they were bearable and now I spend 30minutes watching a 10 minute video or playing a game for 15 minutes... how do I fix this ? I'm tempted to give this computer for warranty service but I'm scared they'll find a way to put this problem on me and charge me for service...Good evening kebubas and welcome

Lets see what we can do for you.

#1... From what you are trying to describe the PC has been an issue from Day 1 correct? if so how long does it take to boot like 3+ min to boot?
#2... Are you or have you gotten any error messages / boxes that have come up?
#3... You are only running 1 "Active AV" (active anti virus suite) fort INSTANCE you dont have Norton AV and like McAfee running at the same time?
#4... What kind of ISP do you have. Like "Cable or DSL, Sat, Dial up etc.
#5... The movies or games that you are playing are they on or from your computer (using CD/DVD etc) or are you trying to watch / play them on-line?
#6... How much memory do you have in the PC? (1 gig or 3 gig's etc)

Most people that I know usually have good luck with Asus product's. Am I safe to assume that the PC has the factory OS Windows 7 and if so is it 32 or 64 bit?

Hope to hear from you soon, Mike #1... it takes less than 2 minutes
#2... not really, except some after installing games and such - but those are understandable
#3... only one - AVG Free
#4... cable to my router and then wirelessly to my laptop
#5... both
#6... bought it with 3gigs originally but a few months BACK (2 or 3, maybe even less) I upgraded to 4 gigs (checked compatibility of my laptop model on the internet)God morning kebubas and welcome back to CH

Thank you so much for supplying the info

It is possible the CODECS on the PC are getting corrupt. When the codecs get corrupt then you get issues you are talking about. But this issue is just normally for movies / clips / you tube videos etc not so much in games if you wish to update the codecs http://www.mediacodec.org/download/ I have been using them for years and never had a issue.
Now if some of the games are from older OS (operating systems) like XP / windows 98 etc there may be a patch / update for them or they will have to be run in compatibility mode or are no longer compatible in W7. If you can give me an example of a game the you play on the PC that is having the issue? (i.e serious sam / wow / halo etc)

I would do the codec pack first and if the youtube videos / movies are better. If they are then continue down the list

#1... The drivers that you installed were they all from Asus or did you use the windows ones? (this is just a question)

#2... What browser are you using for youtube etc. IE 8 or 9 or Firefox 14, Chrome # ? etc there may be a add-on contributing to your issues (this is just a question)

#3... For the AVG (free or paid version) I am assuming that you removed the old AV thru windows "uninstall programs" (i.e like Norton etc) but what was your old AV ?. The only reason I am asking is sometimes the old AV may not remove it self all the way so companies like Norton etc make a separate remove UT that you may want to try. Please let us know what AV you had and we can supply a link for it.

#4... I am assuming that scans on the PC (with your AV) have come up clean minus like cookies and such?

Sorry I am not trying to throw to much at you. Hope to hear from you soon. Mike Hi, thanks for your answer - ATTACKING me with questions is good because it makes it more clear what I should say (I'm not as good at explaining as I'm good at answering questions) they give direction

#1... first I did the windows update and when I saw that some of the drivers were missing (graph card drivers, touch-pad etc) I used ASUS site...
#2... I normally used latest Chrome, now I use the latest Firefox - it did help me a lil bit but I still get not respond from time to time (and videos with pop-up ads are almost certain to crash my flash player o put all my programs into not responding state...

#3... I've always used AVG on this computer and when I confronted a bug (usually the AVG ui went completely bonkers) I downloaded the latest installer, removed AVG through it and then reinstalled AVG through it...

#4... it always came clean

Awaiting your answer, TJA

=EDIT=
game examples: Skyrim, Red Faction Guerrilla (mostly freezes during cutscenes, Mass Effect (all three froze on cutscenes mostly as well, though 2nd froze on starting menu 99% of the time, I had to alt-tab it while it was loading and then alt-tab back when I thought the menu is already loaded - worked every time). Haven't played too many other games... APB reloaded worked fine (lagged ofc because of a weak machine), Blacklight Retribution worked just dandy on low settings, WOW NEVER EVER had an issue, SilkroadR worked fine, GTA 4 lagged but was playable AND never crashed, Oblivion crashed pretty often on loading screens etc but that's probably due to heavy mod list...

Also I just tried to check my GMail - it threw me into not respond again although it was the only tab opened...Try downloading Speccy and then install the program. To post and publish a snapshot of your PC.
. In the Menu bar, click File -> Publish Snapshot
. Click Yes > then Copy to Clipboard
. On your next reply, right-click on a empty space and click Paste on reply box then click Post[/b/].

Download SecurityCheck.exe from Here

. Run SecurityCheck and follow the instruction from inside the code box.
. When the scan is finished, a notepad will automatically open as check.txt
Please copy and paste the contents here on your next reply.

i already gave my computer to warranty service (now whole week without computer yaaaay* sarcasm*) today was the only day free enough to do it...

Solve : Sudden PC sluggishness - Asus, Windows 7?

Answer»

Hi,

Around 1-2 months ago, my PC was downstairs with no known issues. I recently moved it upstairs into my room and I've been getting ridiculous issues that are driving me insane.

In a nutshell, my pc seems a lot more sluggish with random lag-spikes, similar to those you'd get online (although this occurs when I'm using the PC offline). I only noticed this because one day my speakers would cut in and out randomly, and would sometimes stutter and repeat. I tried a ton of different fixes, most of which were physical (like relocating the PC, checking wire connections, etc), since I hadn't changed any software/program before and after moving the computer.

I figured that the spikes were due to the speakers, so I disconnected them altogether, but I'm still getting the spikes, and I'm really confused as to what the underlying ISSUE is. Here's a list of things I've tried:
- Ran Norton360 and MBAM scans, both were negative for viruses/malware
- Did a disk defrag (before the defrag there was only 4% fragments, after defrag the issue still persists)
- Cleared browsing history/cookies (I don't think the issue is internet based but I thought I'd might as well)
- Performed a disk cleanup on both C: and D: drives
- Cleared useless files (such as word docs, no windows files) (Currently the C drive has 11.1GB free of 49.9, and the D drive has 1.29TB free of 1.81, so I don't think its an issue due to too many files)
- Closed all unnecessary running programs (CPU usage is always <30%, and physical memory usage is always <15%)

Some PC specs:
- Asus (not sure of model) running Microsoft Windows 7
- Intel Core i7 CPU 870 2.93GHz, 4 Cores
- 16GB Physical memory

If anyone's able to give me some insight as to what's going on, it would be most appreciated. The only thing left that I can think of is that I've done something to the PC physically (like melted something) or the location of the PC is affecting it, which I doubt.

Again, thanks in advance for any/all the help. Also, I'm not terribly computer snazzy when it comes to troubleshooting, so please bare with me if I ask silly questions like how to open up certain programs, etc .

Patrick. Sorry, I don't know what lag spikes are. Please describe the problem in detail. EXACTLY what is happening and when does it HAPPEN?The PC is sluggish pretty much from startup. Movies stutters/lags, opening programs sometimes fails, opening web pages is slow, pretty much anything has an increased response time.Is this laptop still covered by warranty? My friend had a similar ASUS Core i7 laptop and he gamed with it and it kept having choppy graphics and sound and sometimes would lock up mouse pointer and all for about 3 seconds and then become responsive again soon after. He sent his back RMA and then shipped him a new one. He ended up adding one of those fan platforms that go between the laptop and the tabletop etc to keep the replacement running cooler as for his ASUS was always roasting hot on the bottom side after playing games. So far he has been without issues. Maybe you can send yours back RMA if still covered by warranty. In addition to this I have heard that ASUS has had some quality issues lately with their products, but I have ASUS video cards and a ASUS motherboard and they seem to be running ok.Let's try a clean boot and see what happens.

Open msconfig and on the General tab choose "selective startup" (uncheck all three items) and reboot. Does the problem still occur? If not, start adding items back to msconfig one or two at a time, rebooting after each change, until the problem reappears and you'll have identified the offending process. This is clearly a time consuming procedure, but it is the best way to determine if some process loading with the system is the cause of your problem.

After you've isolated the cause, do not use msconfig to permanently disable the process. Instead, if it is a service go to START - RUN and type: services.msc (then press enter) and disable the service OR, if it a program, you can download & run a simple app such as Mike Lin's Startup Control PANEL (http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml) to enable, disable, or otherwise manage startup programs.
Thanks for all the replies.

My PC is still under warranty but I'm a bit cautious about sending it off right now because I have Uni commitments and access to a PC is absolutely vital. I was hoping it was something minor that I could fix on the spot but it doesn't seem to be.
The main reason I'm posting is that I'm worried it'll break down in the next 4 months...I just need it to last that long so I can finish Uni and send it off.

At the moment (since I've started the PC today) the issue hasn't been present. However, if it happens again later on I'll follow your advice Allen.

Thanks again everyone

WHAT DO I DO IM NO GOOD WITH COMPUTER IM A STUPID IDIOT.Good evening Johnknee3 and welcome to CH

Please don't take this the wrong way I am not trying to be wise guy but your post is hard to understand.

#1... This does happen as some PC's do not like sleep / hibernation "I left my computer to low power state and when i tried turning it own it took longer than it should so i restarted it. Came up with question to continue or delete restoration data." is this laptop or a desktop

#2... If the restoration data is corrupt this can happen but the PC should not just shut off "Came up with question to continue or delete restoration data. Tried continue but my desktop was just dead i could tell because my desktop button turned orange." does it just BAM shut off and not start up at all.

#3... Before this issue happened did you get any errors / BSOD screen's etc "Restarted it again chose start window normally and last known now it loads all the way to the loading screen with a bar with green bars moving through. Waited an hour and nothing happens stuck on loading screen." If the PC will not boot up normally there can be software conflict or a hardware issue.

#4... What model is your PC (i.e HP a6400f etc)
#5... What is your OS
#6...Any new changes hardware / software etc.
#7... Have you run any AV scans (anti VIRUS suite) did it pick anything up

Before this issue came up was the PC running normal or was it running slow etc. Please try to be just as descriptive as possible, Mike (I'm no good with computers)

#1 This is a desktop

#2 It starts up but its forever loading at the windows loading bar screen. (Its still loading after 12 hours)

#3 I'm pretty sure i didn't get any errors before this issue.

#4 I don't know (I don't have box either its been 5 years though all i got is its asus, antec, intel core 2 quad)

#5 Windows

#6 No

#7 Yes (AVG not sure if reliable but it says no virus)

Before this issue PC would start up slow.Good evening Johnknee3 and welcome back to CH

Try pressing F8 repeatedly upon startup of the computer, a screen should appear with some options in white text.
Choose 'safe mode' and tell us whether it now works, or still doesn't load.

Solve : Laptop keeps on turning off and then restarts randomly?

Answer»

For the past few weeks my laptop has been turning off and then rebooting itself randomly. In the begging it would turn off once or twice and then work fine but now it just keeps on turning off and reboots every time I use it in the normal mode (windows 7 64bit). It works in the safe mode but in the normal it doesn't. I tried the many things such as:

Clean boot
checked hard drive and memory
re installed windows 7
set the bios to default
cleaned vents and applied thermal paste
I have a Hitachi hard drive so i did the drives fitness test and repaired the errors

None of these helped... the problem is still there.

Need Help!!!! Download BlueScreenView:
http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/blue_screen_view.html
unzip downloaded file and double click on BlueScreenView.exe to run the program.
when scanning is done, go to EDIT - Select All
Go to FILE - SAVE Selected Items, and save the report as BSOD.txt
Open BSOD.txt in Notepad, copy all of the content, and paste it into your next replythank you for the reply allan I m going to try this right nowhello Allan I tried blue screen view but it does not list any crash...i downloaded the zip file in the safe mode then logged back in the normal mode...then after few mins my laptop turned off and reboots...i logged in the safe mode again, clicked on blue screen view but it does not list any crashes.
Okay. Just wanted to see if it was bsods that were causing the restarts. If it doesn't happen in safe mode it probably isn't a HARDWARE problem. That would lead me to guess (and at this point it's just a guess) that it is either malware or something loading with the system.

1) Have you run full system scans with BOTH your anti virus app as well as MALWAREBYTES? If not, please do.

2) We can try a selective startup. It's a lengthy process, but if the problem is some process loading with Windows this will help you identify it.

Before re installing the windows I did perform full system scan using trend micro housecall (my trend micro titanium does not work in safe mode therefore I Had to use Housecall) and result, there was nothing. I also tried the malwareByte before the re installation of windows but it was not full system scan but it did find two malwares which I deleted. After re installing the windows, I tried the selective startup but again no luck, the problem was still there.

Should I still perform full system scan again with both? There's certainly now harm in doing so, is there? nope... I will do it and let you know once the scanning is finished thx Allan Hey Allen I m back. As u suggested, I did the full system scans with both the housecall and malwarebytes. Their is no virus or malware etc. I also tried the selective startup but when I log in the normal mode it just turns off randomly and then reboots...

One thing I did notice is that when I log in the safe mode during the loading of drivers...my laptop seems to freeze (i mean it does not load as quick as the other drives and this is the LAST thing that happens in the loading). This happens only for few seconds at the classpnp.sys (only for few seconds) then safe mode starts and work fine. I tried the following instructions which found on http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en/w7itprogeneral/thread/566cdd43-ce91-4e64-93e0-8d09d8fc1ea0 :

Try the following resolution:

1. Boot the computer to windows recovery mode.

2. Click Commmad Prompt, type in:

rename c:\windows\system32\drivers\classpnp.sys classpnp.old

Note: I assume that your windows is installed on C drive. I have tested this step, it will not crash your system.

When I performed this instructions using the recovery disk it did not work. Then I tried it in safe mode as administrator and it said access is denied. From here IDK what to do??

Are their any other options to fix my laptop?

We've already established there are no blue screen errors

y2000 - yeah, I've seen the Google results and it appears this is not an uncommon issue. It seems it can be anything from a bad hd or cable to a questionable MS Update to something else. Jut one quick question - please open device manager - are there any yellow or red symbols?

Other than that I'm sorry, but I'm at a loss and I don't want to keep guessing. Let's wait and see if anyone else has any ideas for you short of a new install.Yea there were about 3 yellow marks I disable them but the problem was still there, they were under the other device and when i clicked on them there was no information regrading what kind of driver or device it is... last night I just erased the disk using the Disk fitness by hitachi and checked the disk, my S.M.A.R.T status: GOOD and no errors were found. I also used memtest86 and again no errors were found. (also I don't think that there could be a power supply issue cuz last night, to perform the disk clean up, my laptop was on for the whole night and it did not turn off).

Then Today, I tried to re-install windows but every time when the windows logo shows up my laptop turns off and reboots. But When I press F8 after the brand name of my laptop while the windows installation disk in the CD-ROM. I see the loading bar and then i get the option of safe mode and last good know config, directory...etc. Then, when I choose safe mode the installation of windows works then the computer restarts (normally, no power turn off) to finish the installation. However, when it reboots (in order to complete the installation) it is no longer in the safe mode. And since it is not in safe mode, before the whole installation of windows completes again my laptop turns off and then I have to re-start the installing from the beginning.

I just don't understand what's the REAL problem with my laptop.

What laptop model do you have? Maybe you need to nuke the hard drive or flash the BIOS first before going for another reinstall. You have mentioned of hard drive test with errors repaired. It is a toshiba A305-S6843. Luckly, I was able to install the windows it did not turn off during the installation this time. So, now I have windows 7 64bit installed but it still turns of randomly when I am in the normal mode.

Could it be a bad memory or slot? I have two memory slots with 2gb of ram in each. But when i put rams one by one in each slot. In one of the slots both rams don't work (as soon as i press the on bottom the laptop turns on but then quickly turns off) while in the other slot both rams work I am able log in the normal mode but then after few mins laptop would turn off.

Could this be a indicator of a bad memory or slot? Or something else...Just to be clear y2000...

Is it turning off then sometimes also turning back on or is it restarting?
Your first post is a little vague on it.

When you first downloaded the blue screen viewer did you unzip it & install it then check for reports after the first failure? It won't make a report while it's sitting there zipped up.

Solve : Re: Blue Screen of Death (BSoD) keeps happening and I don't know why...?

Answer»

I'm new and I don't know what to do...Anyways I am having the same issue with the BSOD. Here is a short memo on what is going on with my desktop.Ok, I need help in a bad way. Here is what is going on with my desktop computer. This morning when I went to power it on it took me directly to the screen where it gives you the option to launch startup repair or start windows normally, well when I tried to launch startup repair the blue screen of death appears with two different messages each time I tried this option, first error is Page_Fault_In_Nonpaged_area and the second time this error popped up DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL so I TRY and reboot and once again it takes me back to the first screen so I try start windows normally and the computer reboots and it takes me directly back to this screen again, I have tried safe mode and even to restore computer from last none config and nothing happens but it takes me back to the page where it gives me the option to either start normally or to repair. I have even tried to insert the start up disk that came with my computer and it doesn't even read the disk. I am running out of ideas and I need help, please...I don't know what else to try. Thanks in advance for any help with this matter...Basically my computer won't let me do anything, command prompt or nothing...

idk i have been dealing with the same problem. the more repairs and restore to previous state i made the worse it got. out of sheer desperation i hooked a second hard drive in unisone and viola problem solved.
idk you tell me as long as it works 3rd times a charm. i HOPE it lasts cause this is irritating ha ha
i was told there were many errors in debug and was shown and told it would keep getting worse, it would only cost me $99 no thank you. i've done surface scans on hard drive, reg repair, clean up, house cleaning of junk.
can't tell what is the ultimate solution . i've done 2 re installs guess it's a windows flaw oh well- just live with it.
hope this helps you Good evening newbie2471 and WELCOME to CH

Well in order to help you some information is needed.

What OS (operating system XP / Vista / Windows 7) and what bit version 32 bit or 64?

What model PC (i.e Dell C521 / DV9317CL) or is it a custom PC and if so what model is the motherboard etc

From what you put in your post you cant not even get into safe mode, if so what is the error code (i.e 0x00000D1) etc this is the first group of the error code that is displayed when you get the BSOD.

Is there any new hardware / software

Is there any USB devices plugged into the PC like external Harddrive, USB multi port hub etc. If so please remove them besides the keyboard and mouse

Has your AV suite picked anything up lately?

Your PC MAY not read the repair disk that came with your PC because it is not listed as first boot device in the BIOS.

Please let us know so we can help you further, Mike

Solve : Daryl J Hudson III Facing Window 7 Error?

Answer»
Hello,

I create various new changes today but Support pack 1 for window 7 maintains declining giving me the fault message 80070005. I am using the Windows Up-date software under the start bar, I have window 7 64 Pro.

I have USED 2 times today, it gets to around 98-100% downloadable after which displays the error and the choice to retry.

I'm utilizing an Admin account and also have default Windows options with AVG 2011 Antivirus software installed.

Generally I don't have any issues installing updates.

Any ideas would be valued.

Thanks
Daryl J Hudson IIIGood MORNING daryljhudson and welcome back to CH

I have seen the Windows Update error 80070005. Go to C:Windows and right click the Windows folder and click on Properties and checked "Hidden". You must be logged on with your administrator account. If you see administrator privileges box and clicked Continue. When it says it can't apply to certain files just click "ignore all". LET it run and make all the files in the Windows folder hidden. When that is FINISHED, then immediately uncheck the hidden box and let it do it's thing again, unhiding all the Windows files.

Now you should be able do Windows Update and it should work like a charm. Some times the file attributes get changed for some reason.

Please let us know how you make out, Mike You may also want to try it with AVG sisabled...

Solve : Error re-installing Windows?

Answer»

OK, decided it was time for a clean install of Vista (then upgrade to Win7) on my Dell XPS420 (as I have done many times). The Restore disk claims "it can't find a disk that meets the criteria for installation". I have a ThumbDrive with Win8 Preview on it and it WILL load, until it's time to restart - then I get a "Boot Manager not FOUND" error ["Press CTRL+ALT+DEL"]. I've tried the "BootRec" command in the "install environment" but it hasn't done *poop*. Any ideas where to go from here?

[History: I had 3 1TB HDs. The other two have data that I need to keep (backups, pics, MP3S, etc) so I disconnected them to try to simplify the install. I have done this process several times without issues in the past. The hanging point seems to be the errors listed above. I also tried replacing the 1 TB drive with the original 750GB drive, but the same issues are there.]

My thinking is that if I could get it to "restart" after loading Win8 to complete the install process I could probably work thru it once I have a Windows environment to work with. So, back to the Boot manager issue! As a free test, I'd burn a linux ISO to a CD or DVD and try to perform an install on that HD. If say Ubuntu installs with no problems then your probably dealing with a SATA controller driver missing etc in which you would need to make a slipstream install disc of say Vista and then upgrade to 7 or of 7.

I ran into a similar issue with a Laptop, and to fix for this the SATA controller driver had to be part of slipstream.

If Linux also has issue then you know its most likely a hardware issue somehow, as for I have yet to find Ubuntu not detect a drive controller. On the laptop that had the issues i actually had Linux Ubuntu running perfectly fine on it, and this allowed me to test a few things while I was at it such as the HD for issues.

Ended up using nLite to make a slipstream disc after getting the controller driver that was required.LOL Just what I finished doing. Just restarted and the same error BootMgr is missing.
Good evening digitaldavers and welcome to CH

If I am reading your post correct you are using a non-raid setup?

The OS is on only one drive and then data is on the other disc's. I think you may want to check your BIOS settings it is possible that the stat controllers were changed to ACHI / enhanced and not IDE mode. Plus make sure you do not or have not set sup any raid configurations but if this happened you would have know it but can't hurt to check it.

Also you may want to check that the primary HD is on sata 0 and not 1. But the strange part is windows 7 and windows 8 have native sata controllers so you not being able to install windows 8 is what made me think of checking the BIOS.

Please let us know how you make out, Mike

Thanks Mike - right now I am currently transferring data from one of the secondary drives to the drive I was trying to install to. Then I will switch it to the SATA 0 position. Then I will check my BIOS. I am currently using an 'on-disc' version of LINUX Mint to move files, and try to check it all out. What got me is that it shows a bootmgr file on the disk! It has been MOST frustrating as I have done this process many times before without problems. I will post any/all results here.

David, aka digitaldavers
OK, started fresh this morning. Was able to actually get the Win8 preview loaded and working. The work-around for the 'missing BOOTMGR error' was as it booted to press F12 to select where to boot from and then choosing the HDD with the OS on it. It then did it's expanding, etc. and finished installing. Now for the BIG test, trying to load the Restore DVD for Vista. I am confident I am making progress.

UPDATE:
Well, that didn't go as planned ... the restore process is still saying "the drive doesn't meet criteria for install"! Gonna give it another go with the manual in hand and follow step-by-step directions. I was able to re-install Windows 8 preview using the method explained above.

UPDATE 2:
OK, never thought of this, but am doing the upgrade [downgrade ] to Windows 7 over Win8 instead of installing [factory] Vista and then upgrading. Stand by for the results. It *IS* copying files, etc!

UPDATE 3:
OMG - just saw the Windows 7 logo on the screen after a restart!!! I *DO* think it's working! [peeing profusely!!!]
Good evening digitaldavers and welcome back to CH

I am very happy for you that YOU may be OK .

But I do have a very strong recommendation when it comes to MS OS (operating system and multi booting & if you are going to multi boot) always install the OLDEST OS first to the newest.

i.e install Vista then windows 7 then windows 8 and if you are going to install any flavor of Linux do that last a lot of the people on CH will TELL you the same thing on multi booting.

When you you try install MS OS's backwards it ends up being nothing but an issue. Plus windows 7 & 8 have good boot manager and the Linux boot manager is even better yet.

Please let us know if you need anything else and please come back and let us know how you make out with the final product. Mike

Solve : leor Zahavi: window 7 Problem?

Answer»

Hello friends,

I create numerous new changes today but Guide package 1 for window 7 keeps ignoring me, the error information 80070005. I'm using the Windows Up-date software under the start up bar, I have window 7 64 Pro.

I have utilized Twice today, it GOES to about 98-100% down-loadable after which it shows the BIG mistake along with the option to retry.

I'm UTILIZING an Admin profile and also have default Windows alternatives with AVG 2011 ANTIVIRUS software set up.

Usually I do not have any problems installing updates.

Thanks,
Leor ZahaviGood morning leorzahavi and welcome to CH

#1... your firewall (windows or AVG) may be blocking the installation of the updates so just for the time being either shut them off or disable them. Then try the windows update again.

If that doesn't work you can try this. But if you can not do the steps below then you are not a admin on the PC. Because the windows error you are getting is a permissions error.

To rename the SoftwareDistribution folder, please try below:

1. Log on an account with administrator privileges.

2. CLICK the Start Button, click "All programs", and click "Accessories".

3. Right-click "Command Prompt", and click "Run as administrator".

4. In "Administrator: Command Prompt" window, type in "net stop WuAuServ" (without the quotes) and press Enter.

Note: Please look at the cmd window and make sure it says that it was successfully stopped before we try to rename the folder. However, if it failed, please let me know before performing any further steps and include any error messages you may have received when it failed.

5. Click the Start Button, in the "Start Search" box, type in "%windir%" (without the quotes) and press Enter.

6. In the opened folder, look for the folder named "SoftwareDistribution".

7. Right-click on the folder, select Rename and type "SDold" (without the quotes) to rename this folder.

8. Still in "Administrator: Command Prompt" window, type the command "net start WuAuServ" (without the quotes) in the opened window to restart the Windows Updates service.

Now just go do the windows update again it should work with out an issue, please let us know how you make out. Mike

Solve : Problems regarding Ethernet Adaper??

Answer»

I have an Asus K52F laptop and have currently come across an error with my LAN card.

I would consider myself an experienced computer user but this issue has got the better of me.

I bought my laptop around a few months ago and all was fine. After not using the laptop that much since I bought it I thought it would be a good idea to visit the Asus support site and see if their where any driver/software updates available for my laptop.

I searched for my laptop and model number and was directed to a page with 109 software/hardware updates available.

I looked through the updates and noticed the only updates that supported my particular hardware were a BIOS update, chipset update and a LAN card update. I downloaded these three updates and installed them successfully as well as flashing the BIOS with a utility that was shipped with my laptop called WinFlash.

I restarted the computer and was glad to see there was no problems. I few days later my wireless was being very slow so I took my laptop downstairs to use the wired connection. I connected the cable to Ethernet PORT on my router and to my laptop but there was no connection. Curious I went into Device Manager and noticed that my Ethnernet adapter had a yellow triangle with an black exclamation mark next to it. I went into the properties of the device and under 'Device Status' it said "This device cannot start. Code10.)

I researched online and noticed it could be a driver issue. I then rolled back to the driver that was shipped with my laptop. I installed it, restarted, but still not luck.

I then decided I would reinstall Windows 7 using the backup PARTITION so that I could undo all the changes I had made and hopefully everything would be all right.

I successfully reinstalled Windows and set everything up. I accessed Device Manager and noticed it was STILL the same.

Frustrated and running out of ideas I decided the only other problem could be the BIOS update I had done (Since every other update had been undone with the reinstalltion of Windows).

I visited the Asus website once more and looked at downloading a different BIOS version, preferably the BIOS version I had before I updated it. Unfortunately I didn't write down the BIOS version before I had updated it so I was unsure of which one to download. Desperate to get things working again I download all three versions.

I tried re-flashing the BIOS with all versions but I'm still suffering the problem.

My questions are:

1: How can I resolve this problem?
2: Could the BIOS update of caused my LAN card to stop working?

I have tried everything I can think of and the problem still persists.

I'm pretty certain it can't be a problem with the physical hardware since it was working fine before I applied these updates. (At least it seems that way.

My laptop is still under warranty but the store I purchased it from doesn't have a dedicated team of technicians and therefore it would have to be sent away to Asus which will take FOREVER, which I cannot wait for!

I also researched online that it could be something to do with a Windows registry and that a modification and/or a clean up of the registry could resolve this problem.

My specs are:

Windows 7 x64
Intel Core i3 350 M 2.27GHz
4GB DDR3 1333MHz RAM
JMicron PCI Express Giagbit Ethernet Adapter - Driver version: 6.0.11.10 (This device is suffering the problem)
ASUSTeK Computer Inc K52F version 1 motherboard
BIOS version K52F currently installed, also tried flashing BIOS versions 205 and 210

Thank you very much for your time and I hope you can help me with my issue
i have acer 4430 laptop...

wen i get to 4mat win xp it shows eror and kep displaying blue scren that shows phisical mem dump....
pls help me to fix or should i 4mat 8 in higher version of windows OS. tnxlarz
Please, start your own topic.

This is rather puzzling.
Sure thing, BIOS shouldn't be touched unless you're having some issues, so flashing BIOS was probably a mistake.

Now, in Device Manager, do you still have errors listed in both (wired, wireless) network adapters, even after restoring the computer to factory SETTINGS?In Device Manager I have errors on only the LAN card not the wireless. Never had a problem with the wireless.Did you try to reinstall chipset driver and then LAN driver again?I also get this problem too.

step 1 - go to Device Manager. Press Windows Key + R, type devmgmt.msc.
step 2 - go to JMICRON driver and go to properties
step 3 - click to Details button, you can see Property then find address
step 4 - after you get your address no, keep it and go to Advanced button
step 5 - find network address which is at value box. key in your address no there
step 6 - click OK and see what happen...

I have try this step and it works for me..

sorry for my poor English. I hope this will help you to solve your problemalfarabi88 this thread is 2 years old.--locked

Solve : How to change default install location??

Answer»

Split my hdd into 2 partitions, one for OS another for programs.

But when I install stuff I have to manually say D:/ drive but I want that as default, how do I make it so?
I got all my music, documents etc set on other partition but not programs...

This is a good idea incase there's a software problem and ya need to REINSTALL windows btw, saves your stuffDepending on how the individual installers are written, you may still have to changes some manually. But here's how you can CHANGE the default PATH in the REGISTRY. Be sure to first backup the registry before MAKING changes:

1) Navigate to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion
2) On the right side look for: ProgramFilesDir
3) Change the value for the default path from c:\Program Files to whatever you like
4) RebootRight on,

Solve : Locked out of email in outlook?

Answer»

My Outlook 2007 keeps saying "personal folder not closed properly". It will not open at all. I have attempted to use SCANPST.exe, but I do not know which file to SEARCH. I have tried to follow instructions from several sites, but none of the file names can be used. It has now somehow locked me out of my direct comcast.net email as well. I have been WORKING on this for 3 days!! Please help!!Good evening TraceLogan and welcome to CH

This sounds like the PST's are to large and maybe corrupt if you are locked out of the account.

#1... I would contact comcast and ask them to unlock the account?
#2... Dis able add-on's in outlook
#3... If outlook is not opened / accessed & closed normally you will GET that error.
#4... Verify email account settings. I don't know if you are set for pop, imap etc.
#5... Archive outlook and compact the pst's
#6... Open the mail icon and make your edit's to the account. This can be found most of the time in the control panel.

What OS are you running and what SP?, what SP is on office?

Hope to hear from you soon, Mike

Please explain EXACTLY what it is you want / intend to do.

Please explain what you want or are going to attempt to do. The windows 7 that you want to move up to is a disk from OEM manufacture or are this going to be a upgrade and is it going to be the same version like you are going from windows home premium 7 32bit to windows7 64 bit home premium ETC.

Please try to be as detailed as possible so you can help you, Mike From Microsoft:

If you want to move from a 32-bit version of Windows to a 64-bit version of Windows 7 or vice versa, you'll NEED to back up your files and choose the Custom option during Windows 7 installation. Then, you'll need to restore your files and REINSTALL your programs. For more information about performing a custom installation, see Installing and reinstalling Windows 7‍(http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Installing-and-reinstalling-Windows-7)so i will have to backup files to a hard disk and then re install everything? i will have to start my games all over???Correctand i will lose my beta keys? will my intel core 2 duo and 3.5gb ram be able to handle it?I don't understand your question.Forget about beta keys is there any specific hardware setting required to run a 64 bit OS system? Will I be able to run it with what I have?If it's a 64 bit processor, yes.is intel core 2 duo a 64 bit processor?Good evening XtrGamer and welcome back

Yes that CPU is OK to use on Windows 7 64 bit. You can use this link to see if your hardware / software is APPROVED to use with Windows 7 http://www.microsoft.com/windows/compatibility/windows-7/en-us/default.aspx

[year+ old attachment deleted by admin]I asked you to paste the results in your post, not to use a link. I'll do it for you.

I asked you what is new or different since the last time everything worked properly. Please answer the question.

Please open device manager - are there any yellow or red symbols?

there are no red or yellow symbols

it stopped working when i updated norton security scanner, but i had problems before that because
when it started to make annoying sound like buzz for a minute then it stopped. Please describe where the sound seemed to be coming from and when you heard it (when the system first booted, when you were doing something specific, etc). Please - stop with the one sentence responses and start providing as MUCH background information as you can so we can try to help you. Thank you.the sound seems to be coming from the speakers. the sound started a month ago and it seems to be making sounds when the laptop starts up. when i turn on my laptop my auto speech tool and Skype start. I was about to turn facebook yesterday and it froze and showed the blue screen.Okay. How often do you get the blue screen - does it happen every time you boot up or only once in a while? If it happens all the time, please boot to safe mode and leave it there for a while and let's see if that works normally.the first time i do it it freezes and so i force it to shut down. then i turn it on and it asks me if i want to run on safe mode same mode with networking , stage modw with command prompt or run normally. run normally just freezes. safe mode works well but their is no sound and windows security centre doesn't work. I am using the laptop right now in safe mode with networking. Okay. Let's see if it's something loading with the system that's causing the PROBLEM. This can be time consuming....

Instead, if it is a service go to START - RUN and type: services.msc (then press enter) and disable the service OR, if it a program, you can download & run a simple app such as Mike LIN's Startup Control Panel (http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml) to enable, disable, or otherwise manage startup programs.
i have more than three things that run in start up 40 is it okay if i uncheck all the system config. Please read the instructions again.i can only uncheck 2 boxes when all of them are checked there is no internet connection.

Solve : windows update and black screen?

Answer»

Hello

Two nights ago, my boyfriend was using the computer and said he saw a pop up message (not very computer savvy and not sure what it said) but knows it was something about updating and the computer would shut down in 12 minutes. So he just closed it right then.

In the morning when I got to the computer, it seemed normal. I opened it up, typed in the password and got to the desktop. It then went to blue screen and said windows is now updating do not power down your computer etc. So I kept it open and let it update.

When it restarted, I saw the toshiba logo then a black screen with a white cursor in the top left hand corner then it goes to a all black screen. I left it alone for about 30 minutes thinking it needed to work it self out, but nothing changed. Every time I restart it, the same thing happens....toshiba logo, white cursor then total black screen. The key board still works like cap lock and number lock can be changed. Not sure if that matters. Also, I am unable to go into safe mode, hit f8 to no avail.

additional info:
the laptop is about a year and a half old. It has never been repaired. It's a Toshiba satellite. The virus program used on it is avg and ad-aware. Windows 7 I believe

Any help would be greatly appreciated! Good morning mhpfed and welcome to CH

A couple of things to check if the boot order got changed by mistake and you will be able to tell by doing this.

#1... When you start the PC keep on tapping F12 to change the BIOS boot order when the BOX pops up use the arrow keys to pick the hard drive and then push enter key and it should go to your desktop after the updates finish. If the PC STARTS normal then you will have to change the boot order in the BIOS. To change the boot order in the BIOS just restart the PC and keep on tapping the F2 key and in the boot section just MAKE the hard drive the first device and just make sure you save the changes and you will be good to go.

#2... If there is any devices are plugged into the PC try unplugging them. If there is a USB thumb drive, external hard drive etc. They can stop the PC from starting.

Hope this HELPS, please let us know how you make out, Mike Ok thanks for helping!! Just to clarify, when I go to the boot menu, HDD/SSD is the hard drive right?Hi again

Yes if that is your option than try that one. The HDD means hard disc drive. The SSD mean solid state drive

Good luck Mike Quote from: hartbeatmr on August 19, 2012, 09:03:40 AM

Ok, so I selected the HDD/SSD and it went back to the black screen with no cursor. Do you think it is updating?? I will leave it as this screen for a while and see what happens

Also, there are no devices plugged into the laptop.

Thanks againWelcome back again mhpfed

It may be updating what OS you were thinking it was Windows 7 if it is than windows updates you will see usually something saying progress 30% of 100 etc and you may see white lettering blowing by really fast too. If windows is doing SP1 (service pack 1) it can take an hour or more to complete.

But just to be safe I would save your data using a linux cd from here http://www.geekstogo.com/forum/topic/274691-use-puppy-linux-live-cd-to-recover-your-data/ then see how it goes.

But if you can't get into the PC either in safe or normal mode you will have to your Windows 7 disc to repair the OS. But hopefully you will be OK once the update is done.

Hope this helps, Mike

    Thanks Mike,

there are no flashing words or anything on the screen at all. It did restart itself once, but did the same thing. Toshiba logo and then white cursor and is now back at the black screen. It has been going like this for over an hour

There isn't really anything on the computer worth saving, so I'm not worried about backing it up with a disk. Should we try to re install windows?Good afternoon mhpfed and welcome back to CH

From what I am able to pick up out of your posts it sounds like some of the windows files just got corrupt or maybe the hard drive went bad.

First what model laptop is yours (i.e L500-S5408 etc) this will be on the label on the bottom of the unit. I am not finding any clear CUT instructions for you to follow before you follow the steps below please let me know what your model is first. The I might be able to find some instructions for your model.

#1... As a test you should go the link that was for puppy Linux and see if it boot off it and if you can see any of the contents of the hard drive plus you can get anything that you want at this point and time so long as you have some where it save them on. If you can not see the hard drive or get anything off of it the hard drive may be bad.

#2... If you want you can fix the windows installation that is there by repairing off the restore disc's most Toshiba disc's have this option.

#3... Do a fresh install of windows from the restore disc's

#4... Most Toshiba have a 1 year part warranty "the laptop is about a year and a half old" so if the hard drive is bad do you have a extended plan?

The choice is completely yours on what path you want to do, please let us know how you make out or if you have any more questions, Mike

Solve : Forgive me I'm not 100% sure this is th right place to post?

Answer»

Okay I'm fairly good with computers but I don't know where to go on this one.
My mom recently got a total re-haul on her computer. Upgraded a bunch of things and put windows 7 on it. Now she kept having problems, if it was left on over night the key board and mouse would stop working and sometimes a bios error would show up.

She bought a new computer and gave me this one if I could fix it.

Now I've had it plugged in and turned on for the last 2 days no problems with it all day yesterday but I left it up over night to see if i could begin to find the problem.

When I got up it wouldn't come out of sleep by moving the mouse or typing on the key board (it's a desktop) so i quick hit the power button and all screens were running normally for about 5 min then the key board and mouse stopped work and the computer seized up.

Unable to properly SHUT it down I had to hold down the power button to turn it off. When turned back on was prompted for safe mode or normal windows restart, however the keyboard was still not working to allow me to select a choice. I turned of the computer and turned it back on, same problem. Turned it off un-plugged it and plugged it back in and wham bam thank you ma'am everything worked again, but no sign of the elusive bios error my mom told me about.

So here's my question, where do I start looking for the problem?

And I am sorry this is so little information, I know it's not much to go on and there are probably about 50 BILLION things that this could be I just need a starting point. A place to go to find the first step.New information, was going to go look up some of the specs on the computer to get more detailed information and wasunable to bring the computer out of sleep mode.

When I turned it off and back on a new screen appeared stating the following.

Choose and operating system to start or press tab to select a tool:
(use arrow keys to highlight your choice then press enter)

Windows 7

To specify an advanced option for this choice press F8

Tools:
Windows Memory Diagnostic

At this point the keyboard was frozen and when I turned it back on it returned to the safe mode prompt page but the key board was still not working so i was forced to unplug it again.Title of the Month Finalist...Have you tried another keyboard?

Are the date and time right in BIOS?Good evening Kiti and welcome to CH

OK from what I am able to interpret the PC is a desktop and now has windows 7 am I safe to assume that it maybe had XP? but to help you any further we would need some more info because what is in the post is not enough.

The PC can be freezing from many different reasons this can be a hardware issue or software issue.
#1... What version of windows 7 32 or 64 bit?
#2... If the desktop was overhauled what is the motherboard model most after market MoBo's will have the numbers silk screened around the CPU or the PCI slots (i.e ms-7301 or 845PERL etc)
#3... What model is / was the desktop (i.e Dell C521 or was it always a custom built PC)
#4... If the whole PC was redone inside do you or what errors have you gotten or BSOD (blue screens of death)
#5... Is the keyboard and mouse original / old ones before the PC was redone. If the keyboard is freezing did you try another keyboard I have seen a mouse or keyboard make a PC freeze.

So if at all possible please let us know what parts were replaced.
Motherboard, Memory (how much was INSTALLED), Hard Drive, CD Drive, CPU (central processing unit) (i.e Intel Duel core 2.2 etc)
If you cant get into windows even in safe mode can you get into the BIOS? most aftermarket motherboards you would use the "del" key to get into it while you are booting the PC. When you are in there you will find a lot of the info out. That will be listed in system information or something similar.

Hope to hear from you soon, Mike Quote from: hartbeatmr on August 13, 2012, 10:56:18 PM

Sorry was getting more information when I had to take kid to the dentist. I just honestly wasn't sure where to start. It had XP on it at one point not sure if it was before or after the switched out all the hardware though. It's not showing a previous version under the C drive properties, though I'm not sure if that's what you are looking for.

all i know about the motherboard is that it's an asus M4N68T-M, I'm happy to get more details but I can't find what I'm looking for I have all kinds of windows open regarding hardware properties and performance, but nothing shows specifically. At least to my what I'm beginning to understand as *completely forgotten everything I ever knew about computers eyes.* So if you have direction that it would be great.

It was an HP Pavillion 700 up until 3 years ago but it's been given a total new set of guts.

#4... If the whole PC was redone inside do you or what errors have you gotten or BSOD (blue screens of death)
That's the thing I have not seen thus far anything beyond what I've described above. I've only been told about the problems 3rd hand because my mom lives 300 miles away and i got this computer 3 days ago. I wanted to try and get a head start on figuring things out so that I wouldn't make them worse, but I don't get any errors other than the frozen keyboard and mouse (USB both) and the choose your operating system screen that appeared randomly the one time.

And the Keyboard and mouse don't appear to freeze up if the computer is active only when it is in sleep mode for extended periods of time.

#5... Is the keyboard and mouse original / old ones before the PC was redone. If the keyboard is freezing did you try another keyboard I have seen a mouse or keyboard make a PC freeze.
Different mouses and keyboards have been used but I bought brand new ones when I brought this home because she kept the old ones for her new computer. The problems existed with her old ones, and these newer ones. I did buy them second hand and the keyboard I have was supposed to come with drivers, and didn't I was able to contact the manufacturer and had the drivers sent to me so that I could download them.

Though I did just restart the computer to get the motherboard information I provided and a keyboard error popped up saying load dll failure, so that's completely new, but I just installed the drivers for this keyboard a couple of hours ago.

It's a V7 KN0B1 which they don't even have listed on their website anymore, I had to have the tech center send me the drivers in an email.

If you can bare with me I will go over the specs in the device manager now. I was told it's all new but I don't know enough about it to differentiate b/w the old and the new if that's not accurate.

And I don't currently have the casing opened up right now, and probably won't do it till tomorrow morning, it's to late now but maybe this will give you a starting point.

Title of the Month Finalist...

I am sorry you found it inappropriate. If the problem is coming from sleep mode, then the best solution would be to stop using it. If your computer is capable of running long enough and you have a printer attached to it (or a usb flash drive) then for this and future issues i would suggest that you run a free Everest scan and retain the results for times like this.
http://majorgeeks.com/download4181.html
It will not indicate what WAS in the computer before the overhaul but it will tell you everything that is there now as well as perform certain diagnostics.truenorthI've never been a fan of sleep or hibernation. While they work fine on most systems, there are some that just don't do well with one or the other or both. Instead, I always suggest changing the power options to turn off the hd and display after a defined period of quiet time. It will work well and you should not run into any problems. So funny enough I actually did that last night. When I got up this morning everything was frozen but this time when I restarted the computer I did get a BSD.

It came up I barely had time in my brain to register the Screen was blue and read the words management systems when it shut back down again restarted and windows system repair began.

So I will amend my previous statement and say that it appears to happen after long periods of inactivity. Quote from: truenorth on August 14, 2012, 08:36:17 AM

Thank you so much for taking the time to give the information that you were able to get. Sorry I am not trying to make my post so long I am just trying to write everything down to help you. Most of this post will be just information for you and my questions for you will be on the bottom of this post. Plus did you get the windows disc from your mom when you got the PC. you will need this to fix windows and / or install the OS if needed.

In-case you need it here is your motherboard manual http://www.asus.com/Motherboards/AMD_AM3/M4N68TM/#download and scroll down to the manual section and just pick ENGLISH unless you want a different version. Plus for future use you can also get your drivers for the motherboard from the same link (just remember you want windows 7 32 bit version drivers). Don't worry Asus makes a great product and I have used them for years and from what I am reading / interpreting you may have a software or configuration issue or the BIOS may be miss-configured.

OK the motherboard asus M4N68T-M will work with XP 32 & 64, Vista 32 & 64, W7 32 & 64bit approved.

In my opinion if you end up re-installing the OS (windows) I would do the install as such. Plus I never have any unnecessary equipment plugged in until the drivers are installed and the PC is running normal (i.e printers, external hard drives, scanners etc)
#1... Install windows (operating system)
#2... Install the chipset drivers (these drivers tell the OS how to handle the motherboard hardware)
#3... Install the video drivers
#4... Install the network card drivers
#5... Install the sound card drivers
#6... Now if any other add-on cards / external devices need to be installed now is when I install and set them up.

Now here comes the questions.

#1... But to be safe a would do a scan with your AV suite just to be safe if you can.
#2... If this PC was always acting up even when your mom had it and before she replaced the parts maybe the PS (power supply) is not feeding enough juice to bring it out of sleep / hibernation and maybe it was not replaced when the motherboard was. Do know the part number on the PS it should be on the label. Some cheap aftermarket PS are over rated in the wattage.
#3... Will the PC freeze up if left alone in safe mode?
#4... I don't know if you will know this when windows 7 was installed did they just use the windows drivers or did they use Asus drivers?
#5... Is the date and time correct in the BIOS & windows?
#6... In the BIOS is the hard drive set as first boot device
#7... It is possible that the CMOS battery is going bad and if so the settings in the BIOS will get CHANGED. This one will go hand in hand with #5

Well I ill stop rambling on I am not trying to throw to much at you all at once, sorry Mike

The rest of your questions will have to wait until tomorrow, so that I know with a couple cocktails in me I'm doing everything right. If you get this before i try and stumble into this on my own, can you tell me how to check numbers 5,6 and 7?

If you don't see this first I will either come back to you a lost lamb or will have sufficiently googled the how too. Good morning Kiti and welcome back

Hay I am thirsty where's mine

But to answer your questions for 5, 6 & 7 when you start the PC you can get into the BIOS. Most aftermarket motherboards to get into the BIOS you would keep on tapping the "del" key but yours may be different while booting the PC look on the bottom of the screen it will say something to the effect of to enter setup press ? or to enter BIOS configuration press?

To get & verify the info on the Main page it will have the date / time etc then use the arrow keys to go over to Boot then arrow down to Boot device priority then make sure Hard drive is listed first then hit the "esc" key and now save the settings.

If you have to set the date or time than chances being the CMOS battery is bad. If the battery is bad they can be purchased at just about any place that sells watch batteries the part number is CR2032 and cost about 3-5 $

Plus did the COA (Certificate Of Authenticity) this is a sticker that should have been put on the desktop some where this sticker will have 25 digits (5 groups of 5 letters and numbers) if you ever have to reinstall you will need this number. Now if your mom can't find the windows disc you can borrow one from a friend so long as it is a Windows 7 Home premium disc you would be able to use it.

Hope this helps, Mike

I still am thirsty

Solve : WINDOW 7 DRIVERS?

Answer»

I USED WINDOW XP ON MY PC. LAST SUNDAY I GOT A CD OF WINDOW 7 FROM MY FRIEND AND I INSTALL ON MY PC AND ITS WORKS FINE I GOT NO PROBLEM
BUT MY REAL PROBLEM IS THAT FIRST WHEN I FORMAT MY WINDOW XP AND REINSTALLED WINDOW XP, I ALSO INSTALLED DRIVERS OF WINDOW XP, AUDIO DEVICE DOES NOT WORKS WITHOUT DRIVERS INSTALLED.
BUT IN WINDOW 7 AUDIO VIDEO DEVICE WORKS PROPERLY WITHOUT INSTALLING ANY DRIVERS. I ASK TO MY FRIEND WHO GIVE ME WINDOW 7, HE SAID DRIVERS R IN BUILT IN WINDOW 7. NO NEED TO INSTALL.

PLZ HELP ME, FIRST WAT IS PURPOSE OF DRIVERS ? IS IT ONLY FOR AUDIO VIDEO DEVICES ?

SECOND, I HAVE TO INSTALLED DRIVERS OR NOT IF YES. DID I INSTALL WINDOW XP DRIVERS I HAVE ONLY THAT DRIVERS 1) I'm guessing you have an illegal installation of Windows 7, depending on exactly what your friend gave you.

2) It's very POSSIBLE your system is not designed for Windows 7. You need to check the website of your computer (and various hardware) manufacturers for the correct drivers.

3) Please do not use ALL CAPS. It is the equivalent of SHOUTING on the web. Thank you. The question is kinda hard to comprehend, especially because of all the caps.
15 seconds on Google got me this definition:
Quote

Definition: A driver is a small piece of software that tells the operating system and other software how to communicate with a piece of hardware.
Drivers let the OS (Windows and such) communicate with hardware. For example, Windows usually doesn't know how to use the graphics card in the beginning, but drivers teach Windows how to use the graphics card.
Windows will keep drivers if you upgrade Windows (as opposed to 100% formatting the hard drive and reinstalling Windows.)
Drivers can be available for almost any piece of hardware; some are auto-installing drivers (USB drives, etc) and some require manual downloads or installs (Graphics cards, etc).
If Windows XP was preinstalled on the hard drive of your computer, it originally had all drivers.
You should check by going to Windows Device Manager (Start>Right click Computer>Manage>Device Manager) and check to make sure all drivers are installed. If not, you should manually install them.

1. As Allan stated your copy of Windows 7 sounds dodgy.
2. If its all working, the answer is NO don't install drivers.
3. Drivers are required for EVERY part of the computer, however Windows 7 tends to have much better out-of-the-box driver support than previous Windows Editions.

Unneccessary quoting removed...Thank immental for replying
everything is working fine except my headphone. headphone not working, audio video player working fine. i got no problem in anything while working on win 7 execpt headphone. its works in win xp Do speakers work fine?

Solve : Windows 7 - Nvidia windows kernel mode driver version 301.42 stopped responding?

Answer»

It seems to happen with different cards and seems to be a wide spread PROBLEM. I have a gtx570 card. It happens during various games. The nvidia drivers are up to date.
So far, I've read through a lot of forum posts and tried numerous different things, including; low video settings, disabling all visual upgrades from Windows 7, selecting the video card in 3D settings in Nvidia control panel, and numerous other things. Please come up with a real fix!

Please someone help! What different cards have you tried?
What are your full system specifications?
Have you tried some older drivers?

This problem can be caused by a number of different things, the answers to the above will help narrow down the cause. It seems other people have the very same problem with other cards.
I tried these diver version:
version 304.79.
version 301.42
See attachment
if the fault was here the newer driver version should have fixed it. I think there is an other reason!

[year+ old attachment deleted by admin]Good morning Lemon and welcome back to CH

From reading your posts your video driver is giving you an issue. I also went through the text file that you attached 2x. Nothing is sticking out

All memory is the same speed etc. By the way very nice set up from what I can see going off of the text file;D

But I do have some questions for you.

#1... Who's drivers did you use for the "Intel Chipset drivers" & "Asus Video card drivers" (Windows drivers or Drivers from Asus)
#2... What games are the issue and do you get any error messages / BSOD
#3... For the hard drive in the BIOS is the sata hard drive set as IDE, Sata, AHCI, etc. (I know that you do not have a raid set up)
#4... When windows 7 was installed did the sata controller drivers get installed during windows installation?
#5... Who's PS (power supply) in in the PC and what wattage?
#6... When you are playing a game how smooth is game play. Do you get any ghosting of images, any ripping, taring etc.
#7... Is there any yellow or red devices in the device manager?

Hope to hear from you soon, Mike Hi and thanks

Am I safe to assume that the drivers are from Asus??? the driver numbers cover every MANUFACTURE that makes MOTHERBOARDS & video cards.

Now years ago I used to use strictly only "OMEGA drivers" from way back when ATI had all the driver issues. But you may want to try them. Here is the link if you wish to try them http://www.omegadrivers.net/index.php?option=com_phocadownload&view=section&id=2&Itemid=55 just pick you windows version.

I don't have any more suggestions to give you because in the last post I had put in some questions to try help you but in-order to pin this down more we would need more information.

Hopefully these drivers will help, Mike I downloaded the graphic driver directly from Nvidia
Working on the rest of the answers
omega drivers does have win7 yetHave you tried any older versions of the Nvidia drivers? You said in your first post that this happens with different cards, which have you tried?
The issue is USUALLY down to either a bad driver installation, (rarely) an issue between the card and motherboard, or a faulty graphics card.
When you installed the drivers, did you check the "perform clean installation" box? This can sometimes help, by removing all traces of previous driver versions.

Solve : Did xp have a option to stretch disks like 7??

Answer»

I just saw in WIN7 disk management I can delete my old UBUNTU partition, format it, then stretch my c: drive so it's all one drive again.
That's really cool, did XP have this feature? If I recall correctly, in xp we had to use a 3rd party program to "stretch" the drive to merge unallocated space, and often times this would cause hdd failures.

XP had this feature, but not as part of the MMC Disk Management snap-in. the command-prompt DISKPART program was capable of EXTENDING basic disks in the same manner as Vista/7 allow from the GUI.

Oh boy, your computer is hot.
The max temp for your processor is listed at 60.1° C.
Turn the computer off, clean inside with compressed air.
Turn it on, see, if all fans are running.
Check SpeedFan's reading again.

My oh my...You would not believe the clump of crap I just pulled out. I always spray my pc down with air every 2 weeks or so but what I just noticed on the hard to see side of my Zalman cpu cooler the build up was so enormous that air couldn't KNOCK it out. I discovered it with my finger just poking around. Needless to say my new reading are as follows

Core0 50C
core1 48C

Would you further recommend me to take my Zalman cooler off and add some more arctic silver? The new READINGS are little bit better, but still way too high for idle desktop.
I'd reapply the paste, from the scratch.BTW...you can use a small plastic handled brush to clean out what the air doesn't get...just be careful. Quote from: Broni on March 25, 2009, 11:01:53 PM

Well I got home today and sprayed every square inch of the computer again and knocked a bit more dust out. I also took the cpu cooler off to discover I was in need of ANOTHER shot of artic silver it was wore quite thin. So I applied a good bit of that on. I also changed the 120mm fan to push out hot air rather then pull in air. I noticed it was working against the zalman cpu cooler fan since they are right next to each other. They were just pushing air back and forth and not accomplishing anything. Here are my new readings

Core 0 36C
Core 1 37C

Thanks again for the help! Very appreciated
Those thank goodness are normal...
Fire the Cat...and do the housekeeping about every 2 months.Nice GOING Well im sorry to say this hasn't solved my random rebooting. I just turned on my computer and it has done it again...This is getting discouraging. I really don't know where to look at this point. I have checked my device manager just now for any red or yellow entries and there is nothing of the sort out of place there. Is there any recommendations before I format?
Overheating, definitely WAS one of your problems. I hope, it didn't cause any other damages, but for now...
Did you follow patio's advice from reply #1?

1. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
2. Click the Advanced tab (Vista: click Advanced system settings).
3. Under Startup and Recovery, click Settings to open the Startup and Recovery dialog box.
4. Clear the Automatically restart check box, and click OK the necessary number of times.
5. Restart your computer for the settings to take effect.

If so....

Navigate to: C:\Windows\Minidump folder.
If you see any .dmp files, zip all of them, and attach zipped file to your next reply.

Solve : Should I take Windows 8?

Hi

I notice that WINDOWS 8 is being offered as a free download. Should I take it? If I do download it will it replace the Windows I have now? I have a couple of problems now which I have not taken care of. I was planning on doing a restart using a DVD I have. Should I do the restart before the download or will the download do the same thing?
I am running Windows Vista on an E Machine. Thanks for any info. BobWindows 8? There is no Windows 8.

There's a Microsoft Windows 7, but no 8.He is right there is no windows 8 but there is 7. The free download you are talking about is the BATA and I have it and it is ok. But a warning when the bata testing is done than windows will lock you out and you will have to buy it at full price.

Solve : Windows Update has Stopped Working - Vista?

Answer»

A couple of weeks ago, Windows Update stopped working. I now have an update ICON in my tray that, when I "mouse-over" reads "Windows can't check for updates".

When I try and check manually, a window briefly opens and closes, then - nothing. No error message. I've tried reinstalling Windows Update, but Microsoft doesn't let me, I get an "already installed" message.

Everything ELSE runs OK on my PC.

Do any of you gurus know what the problem might be?

THANKS for your prompt reply JJ 3000. I don't have a Windows CD, my OS was pre-installed. Can I use a borrowed CD for this task?yes - it has to be the same version!

In the Meantime, can you give some more info about your computer?
Did you make any changes to your system before this happened?
What antivirus software do you have?

Disable your firewall (just temporarily) to rule that out as the culprit.OS - Vista Premium SP1
I use Microsoft TotalCare and Spybot SD

I've tried turning off my firewall and disabling my antivirus software.

Solve : T2 > MP3 Converter problem?

Answer»

Hello

I have a Win 7 PC and I have installed the software (and drivers) for a HAND held device whereby you insert an old music tape and then, using a USB cable, it should import the tape onto the PC.

It didn't work. So, I repeated the above using a Win 7 laptop and then another Win 7 PC and that didn't work, either. The device (the one with the tape inserted) has worked before (on an XP PC I no LONGER have).

I get the impression Windows cannot see the device, but would be grateful for any device.

Thanks.

High1Good evening High1 and welcome to CH

Here is the link for updated software / drivers and the FAQ section http://fourcorners.com/t2mp3.html.

Yes it is going off of there web site "I get the impression Windows cannot see the device," Q. What OPERATING systems is this software compatible with?
A. Windows XP, Vista and 7 (official retail release versions only).

Try putting fresh batteries in the unit "It didn't work." Q. A tape is in the player, why doesn't it turn when I press play?
A. Your USB port might not be able to output sufficient power. Try putting batteries in the player.
A. Has it reached the end of the tape? If so, open the player and turn the cassette over.

Hope this helps, please LET us know how you make out. Mike Many thanks for that hartbeatmr

I will try the links and post back.

The batteries are actually fine, because I can hear the tape going round and the voices recorded on the tape.

Cheers.Hello Mike

I have downloaded Audacity and I can tell that it is pulling the audio files in, but I am unable to play the files back even though the speakers work fine. I have repated this on another PC.

I think I might contact Audacity to find out what I am doing wrong.

Thanks again.

High1Good afternoon High1 and welcome back

Depending on what the file extension is you may be missing a codec to hear them playing. You can download a good free codec pack that I have used for years http://www.mediacodec.org/ during the installation just put a check mark in for register these with windows media player.

Hope this helps you, Mike

PS please let us know how you make out I'll try that Mike and let you know.

Thanks again.

Solve : Homegroup?

Answer»

I have successfully installed my printer on my new laptop, operating windows 7 64 bit, and suddenly it is SAYING troubleshoot, which I have done, and it is asking for 'homegroup'. I do not wish to share my printing with anyone. What is the best course of action. Thank you.Good morning dinkie and welcome back

With Windows 7 you can share folders, printers etc. When the PC is asking about homegroup "and it is asking for 'homegroup" it just wants to know if you want to join the network so there is other windows 7 PC's at your location. By joining the group it doesn't MEAN that you have to share anything UNLESS you wish to do so. If at your location you want to share the printer than you can do so if you do not want too then don't. If your printer is the only one you may want to share it but that is up to you.

BTW I don't want to upgrade :LGood evening Sorrowfullz and welcome to CH

If you can't change it back just try using a restore point

Open System Restore by clicking the Start button Picture of the Start button, clicking All Programs, clicking Accessories, clicking System Tools, and then

clicking System Restore.‍ Administrator permission required If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide

confirmation. Just pick one from a few days ago.

Please let us know how you make out, Mike
I tried it keep's making error ;L
thanks for the help though ;cgood morning Sorrowfullz

What error are you getting?

Is the SCREEN resolution the same as you had it before?

Do the desktop Icons look big?

Did you install TF2 Theme

Now these steps should work for you

Right-click on the desktop, choose "Personalization" then "WINDOW Color and Appearance" then click the link "Open classic appearance properties for more color option". Make sure "Windows AERO" is selected and click "OK", If you don't get back the view, try closing some programs. Some programs doesn't support Vistas Aero and will disable it.

Try restarting the computer. if that doesn't work right-click on "Computer" on the start menu and choose "Properties" click on the "Windows Experience Index". If your graphics have a score under 2.0 it can't handle Aero. Try updating the score by clicking the link "Update my score"

It should be there as a link on the bottom of "Window Color and Appearance". Otherwise, open go to the start menu and open "Windows Help and Support", search for "Why are some visual elements being automatically turned off?" and choose the first result. Click on "To change the color scheme to Windows Aero" and then "Click to open Appearance Settings.".

If the steps do not help you it is very possible your video drivers may be corrupt. If it didn't work let us know what model PC you have and we can point you to the correct drivers. You did supply what OS you have but we would need your PC model (i.e Dell C521 etc) and also if you have a aftermarket video card please give that model as WELL.

I searched the exact thing and could not find anything with the nameof To Change The color scheme to windows Aero

Computer INFO
at least what I could find currently

Manufacturer: Dell
Model: Inspiron 530
Rating was 3.3 sorry
Processor: Pentium(R) Dual-Core CPU E5200 2.50GHz 2.50 GHz
Memory (RAM): 3.00 GB
System Type: 32-bit Operating System
Windows Vista Home Basic
Service Pack1

Hope to hear from you soon, sorrowfullzGood afternoon Sorrowfullz and welcome back to CH

I just went to Dell's web site and there is many different configurations for your PC so just go to this link and put in your PC's service tag and search for the drivers http://www.dell.com/support/drivers/us/en/19/DriversHome/NeedProductSelection

Now before you install the drivers I would run a check disk first

1. Open the Start Menu.

2. Click on the Computer button.

3. Right click on your hard drive and click on Properties.

4. Click on the Tools tab.

5. Click on Check Now under the Error checking section.

6. Click on Continue in the UAC prompt.

7. Make sure both options are checked.
NOTE: The Automatically fix file system errors box will be checked by default.

8. Click on the Start button.

9. You will get a pop-up window saying, "Windows can't check this disk while it's use".

10. Click on the Schedule disk check button for chkdsk to run the next time you restart your computer. Then restart the PC.

*****This will take about 20 minutes or so to finish, depending on how big your hard drive is. Do not stop chkdsk once it has started, let it finish. It could cause errors on your hard drive. When you restart to chkdsk, you will only have 10 seconds to press a key to CANCEL chkdsk.****

If you are not able to run check disk don't install the drivers yet. If you cant run it there is another method to run chldsk

If you are not able to run chkdsk please don't do the drivers yet just come back and tell us about it and if there was any errors etc.

When you put in your service tag look for Chipset drivers and Video card drivers. The Chipset drivers will only be one kind just pick the newest one by date. The video drivers & just in-case you don't know which one to get just go into the (Device manager on the your PC) and look for display or display adapter open that and it will tell you what video card you have and just download the newest driver.

Now once you have them just install the Chipset drivers first and if asked reboot then install the video card drivers. Now your PC only has SP1 for your OS I would suggest updating your Vista operating system through windows update. Reason being you are leaving your self wide open for virus plus some of the windows updates are bug fixes / reliability / enhancements.

Hope to hear from you soon, Mike

Hi Mike,
I could not get SP1. to load from windows or disk. Looks LIKE will need to format. Thanks for you for your help. Where was this Win7 obtained from ? ?Good Morning ojas25 and welcome back to CH

The steps below should allow you to install windows updates once again.

Now go back to windows update and it should work if not I do have one more suggestion that may work, Mike

Solve : Dual Sound Cards Versus Single Full Duplex Cards?

Answer»

OK, I'm almost embarrased to ask this but -

I currently use Cakewalk Guitar Studio 2 and Surreal Systems Synth Software for a home recording studio. Old, but comfortable like an old pair of shoes.

Cakewalk GS2 requires the use of W98 with NT4.0 and will work with NEW versions of Windows as long as NT is in there, APPARENTLY it's not with VISTA since I can't EVEN install it using the Compatability Wizard, not sure which Windows versions it will work with after W98, though. Surreal will only use W95 or W98, not certain if it requires NT as well.

I'm comfortable using W98 for this but one of the drawbacks is with using a single duplex soundcard - audio already recorded will not play back when recording new audio tracks. I've checked and checked and while there's full duplex cards out there that allow playback and recording of audio at the same time, none of the newer ones will work with W98.

My question is this - if I just add another single duplex sound card that's compatible with W98 (probably an external card), is it as simple as then choosing one of the sound cards for input/recording and the other for simultaneous playback?

Ideally, I'd love to find a full duplex external sound card that functions under W98 so that's a possibility as well if anyone has any ideas or sources.

Thanks for any help you may be able to give me !

Solve : disc defrag?

Answer»

Scheduled disc defrag does not comply. Schedule says "never". How do I get disc defrag to work as scheduled? How do you want it scheduled ? ?
How often do want it to run ? ?

I would suggest a third party app such as Auslogics Defrag which is very customalisable on top of running way faster then the built in Win defrag...Thanks for your response, but I don't want another app. Windows used to defrag automatically at 3:00 AM on the first Sunday of every month. Now, when I check, the schedule says "never" even though I keep programming a schedule. I'm currently DEFRAGMENTING manually (defrag now) once a month.Good evening unekis and welcome to CH

Please don't take this the wrong way I am not trying to be a wise guy

Thanks for your response, but I don't want another app. Windows used to defrag automatically at 3:00 AM on the first Sunday of every month. Now, when I check, the schedule says "never" even though I keep programming a schedule. I'm currently defragmenting manually (defrag now) once a month.

Is the PC turned on at that time you want it to run disc defrag or do you have the PC waking up so windows can run the defrag.

From reading your post you are familiar with setting up disk defrag but just in case you need it here is MS link to set up the disk defrag http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Improve-performance-by-defragmenting-your-hard-disk

Have you ran a scan with your AV suite just to be on the safe side and to make sure there is not a bug that is affecting it from running. Also some AV suite's will INTERFERE with the MS built in UTILITIES that you may want to use.

If the above doesn't help you may want to consider running SFC there may some files that are partially corrupt.

There maybe a 3rd party application that can be interfering also.

Please let us know if this helps you. Mike Thanks for the responses. I tried the SUGGESTIONS, but to no avail. I am committed to manually defragmenting - which is not a big problem. I just have to remember to do it. I suspect the problem is in a version of something I downloaded in the past few months. I have the same situation with two other laptops.
Thanks to all.

Solve : hp pavilion dv7 windows vista?

Answer»

i got a laptop from a pawn shop and it has a bunch of unnecessary programs, and i was wondering how do i reset it to factory settings? Three ways to recover the PC to the original operating condition

The complete recovery process can take 4 to 6 hours or more to complete. For best results, the computer should be connected to the internet, and it will restart several times during the process. Do not turn off the power or interrupt the recovery process until the prompt to log in to Windows displays.

1. If computer can boot to the Windows desktop, launch the Recovery Manager .

2. If computer cannot boot to the Windows desktop, press f11 to launch Recovery Manager

3. Insert your personalized recovery disc or replacement recovery disc in the optical drive and start the computer .

When the recovery is complete, be sure to run the Microsoft Windows Update and the HP Advisor or HP Support Assistant to install all updated drivers and software.

1. Restore the PC to its original condition with the HP Recovery Manager from within Windows 7 If the PC can be started and opens to the Windows desktop, you can use the HP Recovery Manager on the hard drive to restore the PC to the original factory condition by following the steps below.

Click Start and enter Recovery in the search field. Select Recovery Manager from the list when it becomes available. Allow the action to continue, if prompted. The HP Recovery Manager opens.
Alternately, click Start , All Programs , Recovery Manager , and then Recovery Manager . Allow the action to continue, if prompted. The HP Recovery Manager opens.
Click System recovery . The PC will restart and reopen the Recovery Manager.
When the PC restarts, select the System recovery option and click Next .
Click this bar to view the full image.

If prompted to use the Microsoft System Restore program, click No , and then click Next .
When prompted, if you want to backup your personal files and settings, select the Back up your files first (recommended) option, and then click Next . Follow the on-screen instructions.
When prompted to Recover without backing up your files , please STOP before CLICKING Next .
WARNING:This is the final opportunity to change your mind about recovering the PC and deleting all the files and programs. Once you click Next , the restore process cannot be stopped.
If you are satisfied that you want to begin the recover process, click Next . The PC immediately begins formatting the hard drive and destroying all data.

The recovery process may take up to several hours and will return the PC to its original condition. Any custom settings, drivers, software programs and updates, and/or hardware updates are lost and must be reinstalled.

2. Restore the PC to its original condition using the f11 key if Windows 7 is not accessible

If the PC cannot launch into Windows, it may still be possible to use the HP Recovery Manager on the hard drive to restore the computer to its original operating condition. The Recovery Manager can be launched during the startup process by following the steps below.

Press the Power button to start the PC, and then press the f11 key when the standard BIOS prompts are displayed on the black screen.
NOTE: Pressing the f11 key during startup on a computer with an HP factory image will start the system recovery process even if the prompt is not displayed.
If the HP Recovery Manager can access the recovery partition on the hard drive, a prompt to backup the user files before beginning the recovery is displayed. Follow any on-screen instructions.
If the HP Recovery Manager cannot access the hard drive to fix any system errors, you will need to use the personalized recovery disc that you created to recover the hard drive to its original condition.
If you have not created the personalized recovery disc, or the discs are corrupted, you can order a replacement recovery disc from HP.
When the Recovery Manager starts, follow the step-by-step system recovery instructions shown above.

Resolving a common recovery issue.
If the Recovery Manager cannot be launched from either the desktop, or by pressing the f11 key on startup, you can use the recovery disc to restore the computer to the original operating condition in Windows 7.

3. Restore the PC to its original condition with the recovery discs

If the original operating system is changed to a non-Windows 7 OS, or if the PC cannot access the Windows desktop, or the Recovery Manager cannot be started by selecting the f11 key on startup, you can use either the personalized recovery disc that you created, or you can order a replacement recovery disc from HP to start the PC and restore the hard drive to its original operating condition.
NOTE: Performing the recovery process using the personalized recovery disc that you created may take less than an hour. Using replacement discs ordered directly from HP may take four to six hours and includes several restarts.

If the HP Recovery Manager on the disc can access the hard drive, it will attempt to repair the recovery partition. If successful, a prompt is displayed to continue running the recovery using the Recovery Manager on the hard drive. If the program on the hard drive cannot be repaired, continue using the recovery disc in the optical disc drive.

Use the recovery disc to restore the PC by following the steps below.

Insert the recovery disc in the optical disc drive and start the computer.
If the computer is running, insert the recovery disc and immediately click Start and select Restart to force the computer to start from the recovery disc.
When prompted, Press any key to boot from CD or DVD, press any key on the keyboard.
Allow the recovery disc to start and load the required files while the Microsoft loading screen is displayed. It may take several minutes to load the required files.
When the HP Recovery Manager window displays, click System recovery .
Follow the on-screen instructions and perform the required actions.
NOTE: Do not interrupt the recovery process even though the computer may restart, or the Windows desktop may display, or the process may appear to pause for several minutes at various times.
When prompted, follow the on-screen instructions to back up the user files.
After performing the backup, when prompted, re-insert the recovery disc, and then click Next to continue the recovery process.
A status box is displayed to indicate the status of the recovery and the estimated time remaining.
If you used multiple discs when you created the personalized recovery discs, follow the prompts to remove the first disc and insert any REQUESTED discs.
When prompted to Insert the Supplemental driver disc , take one of the following actions:
If you purchased a replacement recovery disc from HP, and it included a Supplemental driver disc, insert the disc and click OK or Next . The recovery program checks the supplemental disc and installs the specific needed files.
After the Supplemental files are installed, a prompt is displayed to remove the Supplemental disc and insert the original recovery disc.
If you purchased a replacement recovery disc from HP, and it did not include a Supplemental driver disc, click Skip or Cancel . The recovery program will ignore the request and install the next file on the recovery disc.
If you created a personal recovery disc, press Next to continue.
Continue following the on-screen instructions to complete the recovery process.

NOTE: If you have not created a personal recovery disc, or the recovery disc fails or becomes corrupted, see HP Notebook PCs - Order Recovery Discs For Windows 7, Vista, Or XP for additional information.

Solve : Installing different software on a computer?

Answer»

Hello,
My wife's computer has Windows 7 Home PREMIUM on it and she hates it!..smile.. I have the software for Windows XP Small Business and were wondering how difficult it would be to install the XP to use instead of the 7... keeping in mind I am not a expert at such things...

Thank you,
Larry Woller1. Legal. You need to have a valid licence for XP Small Business that would truly cover your wife's computer.
2. Once (1) is checked out, if the computer is a RECENT one there may not be XP drivers for the hardware, for example if it has SATA hard drive. This can be GOT around if the PC or motherboard maker has provided drivers. You can put them on a floppy or CD and install them when prompted during the XP install. Other hardware might be a problem (sound, display, network). Best to say what make and model the PC is and we (or you) can Google for "XXX PC install XP" pages and discussions.
Thanks for your prompt reply and sorry about the delay of answering, been a bit busy here...the software is legal, not a issue... what I was inquiring about is what difficulties one may encounter while trying to download the XP software on a PC that already has Windows 7 software... I have managed to do some brief research in the matter and with being busy at the moment and the possible difficulties I will encounter, have decided to forgo any attempts at this time, perhaps later in the year with winter and more time to experiment..

Again, thanks for the prompt response....

Larry WollerOne thing you may wish to contemplate is to do a dual boot configuration with Win 7 AND XP. That way as win7 becomes more familiar to her she will retain it and be able to transition to it. Better to leave the option to move forward rather than backward. Xp is about to lose all support.truenorthYou can make Win7 desktop look just like WinXP or even Win98. It TOOK me about 2-3 days to figure it out. It's all there, you just have to dig around for it. I have found that MS changed the names of many of the Control Panel items which is why it's hard to find things you are already used to.

Solve : Why my C drive space keep decreasing for no good reason??

Answer»

Okay. At first i saw this brochure for my laptop saying the HDD was 320GB, when i bought it why the max space is only 286gb?? I tried to calculate every way i could but still couldn't get to 320gb.

2nd problem, why is the hdd disk available space keep decreasing for no good reason? its a new laptop so i've not download much things except for msn, itunes and such. it was like 247gb available space i saw few days back but now it is 244gb..and i've looked around and i couldn't find a reason to solve it...can anyone provide workable solutions for the above problems? pls and thanks.

Btw, the C drive's file system is NTFS and i'm using wins vista

Chart courtesy of Western Digital.

Music files will EAT up space rather quickly as will videos. When you work on laptop your NT user file is modified at the same time temp files are generated

which takes your HARD disk space also check temporary internet files.if you have installed any software

it will be load its files in program files folder.

So, in short you have to use disk cleanup utility. to clean unwamted data1. If you never use your computer, the file system will stay the same.
2. When users make this observation, it is mostly a topic for conversation.
(Sort of like talking about the weather of the price of pork bellies.)
3. The NTFS is an improvement on the way DATA were stored in earlier PCs.
4. Using 3GB out 300GB is like one teaspoon out of a quart of beer. hey sadlaptop,

This is a known issue in Vista: Here is the solution for you:

You need to set maximum size limit for the system restore points in Vista:

ISSUE : Hard Disk space is getting reduced on a daily basis in Windows Vista (nearly 1-5 GB per day).

CAUSE: The disk space is used by the System Restore points to store the data.

RESOLUTION:

Disable the System Restore temporarily to get the lost Hard disk space back. On doing that, the System Restore points already CREATED will be lost. To prevent this from happening again, reduce the size of disk space used by the System Restore points. To do that, type the following command at the command prompt:

Click Start, All Programs , accessories and then right-click Command Prompt. Select Run as administrator

At the C:\Windows\System32 command prompt, enter the following:

vssadmin RESIZE ShadowStorage /For=C: /On=C: /Maxsize=3GB

In the above command, 3GB refers to the size used by the Restore point. We can change it accordingly. If all goes well you should see a message saying 'Successfully resized the shadow copy storage association". Your System Restore shadow storage has now been resized. This will solve the issue for sure.

Please refer the web links provided below to find out why this issue is happening and how to solve it:
