Solve : Adding a second internal hard drive.?

Answer»

Hello, I attached a second internal hard drive to my computer with the same RIBBON or connectors as the original hard drive.  When I go into my computer it is not recognizing any second hard drive has been added. Looking for any help on this and what process I should follow from here. I did double check all of the pins were attached properly.  Thank you,

MarcYou need to format it before Explorer (My Computer) can see it. Go to START - RUN - type: diskmgmt.msc (then press ENTER) and find the new drive - it will show as unallocated space. Right click on it and format it.Thank you, I did that and this is what the result is.  Is does not give me the option to format it as format is a grey color which you cannot chose.  Well I tried to do a print screen but that would not work and I could not copy and paste it.  When I right click on it the only options it gives it delete volume...   or help.  It does show it is 100% free.  Any ideas would be wonderful.

Thanks,

Marc

I did attach the screenshot.

[year+ old attachment DELETED by admin]Good evening Frazierface and welcome back

Thank you for the screen shot. But something is not making since. Also you may already know but your "C" drive is 99% full and that is why you are putting in another HD.

That hard drive is only 27.98 gigs? so it maybe a old 30.00 GIG hard drive? the hard drive you put in is smaller that the other one that is already installed? Is this hard drive a old IDE hard drive or is it a sata hard drive.

Just in-case you do not know older hard DRIVES jumpers were not the same on all hard drives from different companies. Example a old western digital 40.00gig hard drive the jumper may have been the 3 jumper on the right and a maxtor one may be the second one on the left of the jumpers when they were set as master. Hopefully that makes since

The next odd part the newer hard drive is listed as drive 0 and you haven't given it a driver letter yet. I would double check the jumpers if your original hard drive that is in the PC is set for cable select then set the new one that you are doing as cable select also (on IDE drives). Sata HD do not require jumpers and only one HD per cable can be used.

You should be able to right click on that drive and delete the partition, then when that is done just right click on that drive and partition it for it's full size than you can format it and give it a drive letter.

Hope this helps, Mike

I would double check the jumpers if the hard drive is IDE  Thanks, I was able to name it J, now can I move some of the C: contents on that or will it just start accepting new data on that drive.  Sorry so many questions, newbie.  I should probably get a big external hard drive, that would help me out  they seem pretty expensive.  Any pointers on a place/company to purchase them?

Thank you,

Marc

Good evening Frazierface and welcome back

I am glad that you got it all set so you can use it.

Once it is partitioned, formatted with a drive letter yes you can start put your data on it.

As far as a good company that would depend on where you live. But my self I love dealing with NewEgg http://www.newegg.com/Store/Category.aspx?Category=15&name=Hard-Drives when you are there just look on the left side. If you want a internal or external etc. The cost are not that bad. If you go to buy another internal hard drive i would not buy a "green Drive label" I only buy "Blue and Black label drives" in my experience green label drives have a very high failure rate.

As far as good companies that make hard-drives I normally buy Western Digital, Seagate and a lot of others have been around along time. Just do your research and when you have a question just ask.

You can buy a good one that is external for about 75+ for a 500 gig HD on up and on some for another 20-25 dollars you can almost double the storage size.

Hope this helps and have a good night, Mike

Solve : Font Deleter?

Answer»

Hi guys!

Say, doany of you know a really good font remover? I have got 'AMP Font Viewer'  and 'Font Explorer Lite' and niether of them are doing a good job with these Windows 7 fonts???          I'd leave the default installed fonts alone...Do you just sit at home and think up these questions? Why do you need to remove fonts? One could conceivably even do the unthinkable and use the built in method for deleting fonts which is to right click them and delete them in the fonts folder, accessible via control panel.

You could even instigate a lot of good times and fun for all by deleting the various system fonts, what considering they are used by the system.

I assume of course that you are deleting the system fonts since you said "windows 7 fonts" which MEANS they were installed with windows 7. There isn't a special "windows 7 font" format, you've got raster fonts (fon, fnt), Truetype (ttf) and OpenType. That's pretty much it. Quote from: patio on September 01, 2010, 11:35:46 AM

I'd leave the default installed fonts alone...

Wait what was he doing to mess them up again? Quote from: johngetter on September 01, 2010, 04:31:30 PM

Hi ya bud, I am not trying to un install any of the system fonts, I know this is not wise, it is the load of other fonts that seem to find their way in that concerns me my friend!   A heck of a lot of programs automatically install fonts without any 'buy your leave' in the matter.    I am a bit of a 'Fonts Buff', if you like and I like to have (with the EXCEPTION of the system fonts) my own choice of them, as much as is possible.  THATS all, no big deal!         See the rubbish here, that need to go!  (Please don't tell me they are ALL system fonts ... there are simply stacks of them here and they are all crap!

Those are all installed by default with windows 7.

Default fonts installed with windows 7

If you really want to delete them, Use the font control panel. I already noted this. It will almost SURELY cause problems with your applications, depending on which ones you use, since a good number of them are used for various UI features. (Some people decided that the Marlett Font was useless and found themselves in a pickle when a good number of UI components were totally screwy.)

Thanks mate!

Nobody wants to mess around with the 'System Fonts', if they have any sense, I know that, but there are a *censored* of a lot of these on my machine right now, along with a stack  that I am sure are not system fonts.

We are told to keep our fonts trim, if we want to have fast loading times,(being that all these fonts have to be read and installed at every boot)!   Every jack program throws a bunch of fonts at you on installation and if you want to keep a FAIR selection of 'decent' fonts, for youself,  as I do, you are well up the creek here and no mistake and I still haven't found a decent font manger yet!

I've got a better idea. Don't sit in front of the system and time every boot. What possible difference does it make how long the boot time is?I havent seen my machine boot in over 2 years...i hit the button and go get my coffee...

To me it's a non-issue...

Well sometimes i'll grab a Pint instead... Quote from: GLOOPS on September 02, 2010, 07:23:07 AM

Just curious, how many fonts do you have installed now?  I have 238 in my Win 7 system.  I've never removed any fonts.Font's only cause problems if you have tens or hundreds of thousands of them installed.Just to let you guys know that 'Advanced Uninstaller' is a great gizmo fella's!     Fonts are no problem with it and it has a great number of multy-funtions. A MUST for anyone cleaning out his (or her) machine.   I recommend it my freinds.!

Solve : Your account has been disabled.. Please see administrator?

Answer»

I have a Sony vaio laptop running windows 7. Recently I restored it to a previous STATE, so I decided to create a password for my admin account. Once I completed the password set up I restarted my computer to see if my password will work. Well it didn't. I Got message "your account has been disabled please see admin" (or something like that). Im completely locked out of my computer. The only accounts pop up at the log in screen is the built in admin account and other user. I've tried putting it in safe mode (same result), I've tried the blank pswrd (same result) I've tried alt+clt+del (NOTHING pops up) and I've tried using my pswrd. Can someone please help?!!Good evening PrincessRaye21 and welcome to CH

One thing to try is RESTART the PC and go into safe mode and hen you are at the options pick repair the computer. Some times this will fix your issue.

Please let us know how you make out, Mike

Edit: Please don't take this the wrong way we here at CH are not allowed to help in bypassing, cracking etc when it comes to gaining passwords on a PC. There are 3RD PARTY tools to do such things. Sorry I am not trying to be a wise guy or a jerk that is not my intention.  http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/enable-disable-windows-administrator-account/

Solve : Vista Only Firefox can connect?

Answer»

Okay. This one has me stumped, I've tried everything I can do without actually getting my hands on the computer in question. My fiancee's laptop, running Vista SP1, has an internet connection issue. For some reason, only Firefox can get to the web. Skype (as you can see in the taskbar), TeamViewer, Google Chrome, Google Talk Plugin - none of them have access to the internet. Hamachi seems to create a relayed VPN tunnel, but then I'm unable to ping her computer via her VPN adapter. Firefox, however, maintains a decent level of access. DNS lookup succeeds, and the DHCP server on her wireless router properly assigns her IP address. When she pinged an IP address that we looked up with DNS and confirmed online, she got a request timeout. We've checked her proxy settings, and that all checks out okay. Her system just will not connect. In Google Chrome, when she makes an attempt to browse to a website using her VPN connection (EVEN the one running on my local IIS 7.5, which I've verified is online, and my firewall's port 80 is open on my VPN address for TCP connections) it shows her a net-102 error: connection refused, as if the port was not being used by a service. If she had tried to connect to my 4463 port, which I only use for a MySQL server which is not currently running, it would show the same thing - but because no service is bound to that port. However, from another computer on the VPN, I connected to and opened my site running on my IIS:80. Originally this led me to think virus, but I don't see any running process in the Task Manager that could be a virus like that - unless one's hidden in the Service Host. I've attached a few screenshots which I think you might find helpful. I've instructed her to reset WinSock using a batch script I sent her, and when she does, I'll post an update and let everyone know. But this is really bugging me, and she uses her laptop a lot. If you need any more information, just ask - please. But please, help! Thanks in advance, and good luck!

Good morning bobsklarservices and welcome to CH

Sorry it was hard to read / see the images they are to small but If I am reading and understanding your post correct. Her PC is NOT configured to use a proxy correct? if she doesn't I would do this

Open Control Panel -> Internet Options; now at the top click the "Connections" tab.

Once clicked, near the bottom is a button labled "LAN settings"; click it. Once clicked, on the page that appears, uncheck ALL checkboxes. Click OK twice to get out of all that stuff. Close all your Internet Browser windows. Then try to get on the Internet again. That should take care of it. This should fix the "it shows her a net-102 error: connection refused"

I also would do a scan with your AV suite (anti virus suite) and malwarebytes http://download.cnet.com/1770-20_4-0.html?query=malwarebytes&platformSelect=Windows&tag=srch%3Ba&searchtype=downloads&filterName=platform%3DWindows&filter=platform%3DWindows

There is also a IE fix that I have used many, many times before that works on IE 7,8 and should work on IE9 http://iefaq.info/index.php?action=artikel&cat=48&id=133&artlang=en this script also fixes tabs that do not want to work etc. But just be for warned it will reset the homepage, delete cookies, IE defaults etc. Please keep one thing in mind I did not write this and is not a MS way to fix IE but all I can say it works. Please use it at your own risk.

Please come back and let us know how you make out, Mike    Thank you for your reply. You are correct, we have her PC configured not to use a proxy. Sorry about the images, they're available in full resolution if you'll right click and open them in a new tab. I'll let her know to run an AVG scan, and send her the Malwarebytes link. We tried configuring her computer to use mine as a proxy through our VPN tunnel, but it didn't work - she couldn't connect to my computer, even with my Fiddler2 running as a proxy on port 2082. As for the IE Fix script, knowing that IE's control panel has a lot of control over the whole system, would the script have any fix for Chrome? Chrome is her default browser, but I know it uses the system's (IE's) settings for some things.

Also, the above images in full resolution:
http://connsocial.com/img/lnk/bamk1.jpg
http://connsocial.com/img/lnk/bamk2.jpgGood efternoon bobsklarservices and welcome back to CH

It is very possible that the fix will help google because yes a lot of the browsers go of of IE settings. Also thank you for the images but I see there is (Symantec service Framework) is this for the old AV or ghost, backup exec? if your current AV is AVG there may be parts of SAV still on the system this may be causing you an issue so I would remove the old AV suite through windows and then go here for Symantec removal tool but DON'T use this if you use any other Symantec products otherwise you will have to re-install them https://www-secure.symantec.com/norton-support/jsp/help-solutions.jsp?docid=20080710133834EN&product=home&pvid=f-home&version=1&lg=english&ct=us I am pretty sure that you know not to run more than 1 active AV at a time.

Please let us know how you make out, Mike  We have actually been running AVG and the Symantec system in tandem for some time, and problems just started recently. Symantec is outdated, and the license is expired, so I don't believe any new updates could be the problem. We were actually PLANNING to remove all antivirus softwares and do a clean reinstall of AVG though, so if I can manage to get the internet working, I'll execute this using Teamviewer - she's not a very advanced user. I'm about to check with her about AVG and Malwarebytes scans, and I'll let you know when I do.You should never have more than one anti virus app installed.Okay, I'm on the phone with her now. She's unable to download the Norton Removal Tool - Firefox won't connect to download it. So what to do? Thinking manual uninstall for a shot.See if you can use the internet with hamachi disabled or removed. If you can use the internet then, it's a problem with Hamachi or the network configuration. Otherwise, some of the proxy configuration may not have been properly reset previously. Now I'm inclined to think it's the proxy settings since Firefox and Java are using independent proxy settings from the rest of the system. But still nothing else works. She can connect to Minecraft, she can connect (albeit limitedly) to Hamachi, and she can connect to the rest of the Internet with Firefox. But I specifically remember seeing her proxy settings are set to No proxy. I'll post screenshots here in a bit. Another thing: Norton 360 would not uninstall. The uninstaller FROZE a good portion of the way through, and just would not continue. AVG crashed when she tried to uninstall it... So we can't uninstall the antivirus suites except maybe to manually delete them, then their registry keys, then their data. But when I get there, I'm going to load her computer with Win7, I already have the DVD and activation key for her. That should resolve any problems. I'm out of town for two more weeks, tops. Any ideas?Good evening bobsklarservices and welcome back

I know that you are coming back but I was just LOOKING at your services try killing the "vprot.exe" service it maybe for AVG web site monitoring / blocking. If that doesn't work try msconfig and go to the start up tab temporarily stopping all startup's and reboot and see if it does any better.

Does she have a smart phone if so tell her to shut off the cell antenna and try connecting to the house's wireless if she can with no issues than that will tell you if it is the PC or the router etc.

Hope to hear from you soon, Mike  We will try terminating AVG's vProtect service. We will also try the MSConfig startup options. As for the smartphone, all the other computers in her house are functioning fine. I'm going to use Teamviewer on mine, hers, and one other in her house to connect to hers using the other as a proxy, if you will. I'm going to do the diagnostic myself, via remote.Okay. What happened when we shut down Hamachi is that Firefox lost connectivity. It seemed that by some strange occurrence, Firefox was connecting via Hamachi, and Hamachi was connecting by some strange thread that wasn't quite broken - Hamachi showed a relayed tunnel to her PC, and I could send chat messages but could not ping and could not connect via Teamviewer (I know the configuration was good, don't worry on that one) IP connection. I'm planning to try the MSConfig thing suggested above, and if that fails, get her important stuff off (pictures with sentimental value, some DOCUMENTS, not much - about 2GB tops) and just wipe and use a clean Win7 install. Vista has always been crap when I've used it, so ever since Win7, I've used that. I would like to know if this could be a virus that is causing it though, and displaying false configuration information in the system proxy configuration dialogue? If this is the case, how would one get rid of it? Malwarebytes didn't show anything - aside from a couple things she downloaded and I told her to quarantine them so they are not there anymore. It's not Vista...
It's not Win7...
It's a combo of Himachi and FireFox not playin well together...probably from not being setup properly.

And it's not infection related if all your scans were run and came up clean.Unfortunately, nothing works now. Back when Hamachi was running, Firefox worked - marginally. Now nothing works, she has no Internet connectivity, no VPN connectivity, and maybe (maybe not) LAN connectivity. We're having difficulties right now so I'm not gonna try and get her to do anything with her PC, but when I get the chance, the first thing I'm telling her to do is the MSConfig - we're going to disable all startup programmes.

Solve : Blue Screen of Death (BSoD) keeps happening and I don't know why...?

Answer»

I have gotten various Blue Screens and I have discovered it was my webcam mic and then my mouse (both Logitech) and reinstalled both and updated drivers but this time I don't know what to do as it is a Windows file:

Code: [Select]A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage
to your computer.

The problem seems to be caused by the following file: rdpencdd.sys

SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED

If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen,
restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow
these steps:

Check to make sure any new hardware or software is properly installed.
If this is a new installation, ask your hardware or software manufacturer
for any Windows updates you might need.

If problems continue, disable or remove any newly installed hardware
or software. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing.
If you need to use safe mode to remove or disable components, restart
your computer, press F8 to select Advanced Startup Options, and then
select Safe Mode.

A number of things to try for that particular error (if you get different errors please post the blue screen view report again):

1) Check for a bios update.

2) Download and install the latest driver for your video card.

3) Check the free space on your hd.

4) To run checkdisk, right-click on a command prompt icon and open as administrator. In the command prompt window type: chkdsk /r  (then press ENTER). You'll be told the disk is in use and asked if you want to run checkdisk on the next BOOT. Say yes, exit the command prompt window, and reboot.

5) To check the ram, download memtest (http://memtest.org/). Burn it to a cd using a dedicated .iso burning utility (http://www.petri.co.il/how_to_write_iso_files_to_cd.htm), make sure the cd drive is at the top of the boot order in bios, then boot to the newly created cd and run the utility.

6) Look in Device Manager - any yellow or red symbols?

Also, I deleted the link in your signature.I got another BSoD just today ... was upsetting .. I was watching a video  and then poof!

The confusing thing is the BSoD said it was lvrs64.sys but after rebooting the program BlueScreenView says it is usbehci.sys

Solve : can't get to start up menu?

Answer»

I have an HP 620 that came loaded with windows 7 home premium. Of course, I didn't make recovery DISKS. The problem first started with msg of 'failed to connect to a windows service' and then the blue screen with msg shutting down to protect COMPUTER. I DOWNLOADED malware removal software and then was instructed to load recovery disk. Since I didn't have one, I used recovery disk from another windows home premium. However that version was a 64 bit and my system is a 32 bit. Now I get msg of media cable error that flashes and goes to black screen with non-system disk or disk error. I have run the tests for the hard disk, memory, battery, etc and all have passed. When I turn on pc, I get the 'hp invent' screen and press escape. In the f10 bios setup, I have restored defaults and saved change. There is no f11 option for system recovery. Is this just a problem of having to get the recovery disks or is it something more serious?

THANKS to anyone to can help.Bad MOVE to install another version on that PC...now your recovery options are gone as the recovery on this ver. will be different.

I would contact the manuf. and order a set of Recovery CD's...
Only way to get back to square one i'm afraid...

Solve : Running "network 4". Where is 1,2 and 3??

Answer»

I'm running W7 32-bit on my desktop.  When my computer boots, an alert pops up above my system tray that says "network 4".  Where in the registry or elsewhere are 1,2 and 3 and can I get rid of the designations?Hi rbdaves,
I think you're talking about the default-assigned network names microsoft SETS up when you connect to a location.
To delete them, open the network and sharing CENTER, then click on the house or bench icon for your network. (It should be LOCATED under the View your active networks).
In the window that appears, click on Merge or delete network locations. Here you can delete all of the networks you don't use. In the future, you can set a network name by clicking on the house icon for your network and assigning a name (instead of the default 'Network').

Solve : HP recovery partition problems vista home premium?

Answer»

I just did a complete win vista home PREMIUM recovery on my daughters HP Pavillion dv6000. I used the recovery method that HP provides from their dedicated partition. My problem is that just before we started the recovery my daughter found some more FILES that she wanted to save to reinstall later. We didn't have any way to back these up so I made a "MY Docs" folder on the partion recovery D:drive and copied everything to this folder, thinking I would be able to copy them back after the recovery. I created this folder directly under the HP recovery D: drive just as the Recovery folder was done. After completing the recovery and also doing SP 1 & 2 I went to this HP Recovery D: drive to retrieve these files.  The folder was not there anymore.  After searching a little I found a new folder "$RECYCLE.BIN" as the first folder shown followed my several other folders with  lavender colored icons in front of each. (Never seen this type of icon before) One of these folders is the folder I made up "MY Docs" When I try and open it up it shows me an HP Icon and a WARNING that this is a recovery partition.  But if I right clik it and clik properties it shows me there are 1337 files and 149 folders just as I copied them there.with the size as 866MB.  This complete Recovery drive is 13G and still has 1G of free space.
Can somebody tell me how I might access this folder to retrieve the files.  Needless to say but my daughter is really pixxxxxxd at me for screwing this up.  I was able to copy this folder to my desktop where I thought I could work on it but all i get is the HP Icon with  the partition warning.Try this.
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c00679369&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&product=18703
I don't know if this article will help, so try This program called FreeCommander. It's kind of like windows explorer, but you can view the data that has been in the recovery partition. http://www.freecommander.com/fc_setup_.zip

CarlosIgnore the warning.  Copy the MY DOCS folder to your new C-Drive.Neither of these allow me to open the folder up. When I try to open up the folder I get the HP Recovery warning. IM still looking for a way to get this folder open.  If I take the properties of this folder it still shows all the files and sub-folders that are part of the main folder I created..
Some how this folder is encrypted with something. Ive tried TAKING ownership of the folder and was succesful but it still would not open up. Ive copied it to another computer but still get the same result.  Please Help.Who encrypted it ...and with what ? ?

It doesn't happen on it's own...

Have your model and serial # handy. Most will ship you Recovery CD's for a nominal shipping cost.isn't there somewhere i can down load them? gosh why did ms quit GIVING us os disks?!! retarded! that's what i need. i could do a recovery right?! i bought a new laptop and i already made my discs! loli called hp. got specific recovery discs per s/n. $11. next DAY air. fingers crossed, i hope they work. thanks for the replyGood News...
Look on the bright side...now you will have them when you need them.
I suggest burning copies and storing them somewhere safe off-site.oh i'll definately do that! it's an old laptop so no biggie. it does have some info i want off of it though. i went and got a new one. 320gb 3gb ram, 2ghz dual core pentium, VISTA and the works. any suggestions for this vista? i've heard there's problems with it. i don't know really. just got it. got norton with it. on my old one, as soon as i put in pc tools spyware program is when it shut down on me. i'm sure it removed some defective drivers i needed. but why wouldn't last known config work? hopefully the recovery discs will restore it. i'm more concerned with my new one though and any suggestions you might have would be appreciated.

thanks Vista is fine...the knocks on it are basically over-rated and numerous...
Why PCTools...did you pay for that ? ?yeah i paid for it. ran the FIRST scan and my cpu locked up with the bsod. they said they couldn't do anything for me except renew my subscription for another year for free. so i'm not using them anymore. got norton now on my new one.

Solve : Windows Update problem? Help??

Answer»

i did the window update and this is updating

Security Update for Microsoft XML Core Services 4.0 Service PACK 2 (KB954430)

i downloaded this like 10x already and still shows up in windows update.

according to evilfantasy i did this

Download Dial-a-Fix by djlizard, save it to the desktop then extract it to it's own folder.

    * Open the folder and run Dial-a-fix.exe
    * 2 windows will open. Close the one in the background labeled Restrictive POLICIES
    * Check the box in section 1, Empty temp folders.
    * Check the box in section 2, Fix Windows Installer.
    * Check the box in section 3, Fix Windows Update.
    * Check the box in section 4, labeled SSL/HTTPS/Cryptography. The 4 boxes under it should be pre-checked
    * Check all boxes in section 5, labeled Registration CENTER.
    * Click Go
    * OK any error messages if received, but write them down and post them here.
    * Restart the computer when done.

.
Now try again

the problem is one error message came up "Invalid floating point OPERATION"

mmcndmgr.dll is registering the problem its takin too long still not done yet been over an hour already so i canceled it.
did i screwed my computer?  Go Start>Run, type in:
regsvr32 %SystemRoot%\system32\mmcndmgr.dll
Click OK.
Restart computer, and try Dial-a-Fix again.
when i put on run this error message came up.

DllRegisterServer in C:\windows\system32\mmcndmgr.dll failed.
  return code was : 0xc0000096
Does it say INVALID_WORK_QUEUE_ITEM?no it doesn't, it SAYS RegSvr32 and inside the box that error message comesGo Start>Run ("Start Search" in Vista), type in:
sfc /scannow
Click OK (hit Enter in Vista).
Have Windows CD/DVD handy.
If System File Checker (sfc) will find any errors, it may ask you for the CD/DVD.
If sfc won't find any errors in Windows XP, it'll simply quit, without any message.

Solve : I believe my work is being sabotaged.?

Answer»

At work, I have a Dell OPTIPLEX 360 with Windows Vista.  It has recently been BROUGHT to my attention that work that I know I did has mysteriously disappeared.  I am being blamed for people not being paid.
First,  I read somewhere that a computer keeps "copies" of each version of a FILE, EVEN when you edit and save.  Does anyone know if this is true?
Second, if it is true, then how do I find the previous versions so that I can find out if part of my work was erased or if perhaps I just didn't do it.
If I didn't input the information, fine, I can live with that and correct it.     But if one of my co-workers is deliberately deleting my work to make me look bad, that's not ok.
One last thing, I networked all 6 of our computers TOGETHER.  The original files are not kept on my computer, they are kept on a co-workers computer and I just have a short cut on my desktop in order to access the files.  It is in written in Excel.
I appreciate any help I can get.
Thank You.
Does that mean that 6 people have access to these files?

If so, do they need to have access to these files?Well, it is really just myself and one other person who use this particular set of files.  The other 4 people have very limited access and these files are not shared with them.  Not saying that they couldn't just come in and use my coworker's computer.  (I keep my computer locked when I'm not here, she doesn't, even though I've recommended that she should.)  Why are the files on the other computer? I would put them on your computer and lock them down. If someone needs to see them give them a copy. Also I would start backing up your work to CD.

Do both of you update the same Excel file or are you the only one who updates it?  If the latter, then I suggest you password protect the file, setting a password to edit, but not to view.  In other words, someone else can open the file and view it without a password, but not edit it.

Solve : Windows Installation Disks from companies?

Answer»

I have run across this with some computer manufactures, that the restoration disk to load windows with does not have the repair option and only allows you to do a clean install of windows. This can be troublesome when I want to do a repair install of Windows. I have a question would it be ok to use a oem version of the operating system to do a repair install? I'm worried that it might not have all the drivers for the motherboards out there ect. If that's true could I then use the original restore disk from the company to install the drivers?

Would that work? No
OEM discs are designed to do one thing and one thing only:
Wipe your data and take the machine back to Day One status.

Describe your machine and what you want to accomplish in more detail and we'll go from there... Quote from: patio on February 26, 2009, 02:21:16 PM

I've used OEM Installation CD's to do a repair install.

I've run into this problem a few times on dell machines and others with their installation cd.

Someone said this: You can download the XP or Vista boot disks from MS and boot off them, then boot into recovery console or pick to repair and it may work off your restore CD. Not sure if it will or not.How have you facilitated a Repair install from an OEM CD ? ?
These instructions would be valuable. Quote from: patio on February 26, 2009, 03:11:32 PM

It wasn't on Dell machines or companies like that. They were on custom machines. And the OEM cd would let me do a repair install on them.

My problem is on some Dell machines and other name brand computers their recovery cd does not have the option to do a repair (or refresh) installation of Windows all it says is would you like toinstall on this parttion. It does not show a PREVIOUS windows install at all. There must be some way around it. Surely Dell and other comapnies wouldn't be that stupid to not allow a refresh or reapair install. I always thought an OEM disk was another name for a generic "install onto anything" full Windows install disk, as opposed to those manufacturer's disks which merely contain a Ghost-type image of a Windows installation, but maybe it's the other way around?
Is there a way of using the Recovery Console and doing a repair install? Quote from: patio on February 26, 2009, 03:11:32 PM

I think that might be what has sparked the confusion.

As an example most 98 disks sold at retail were "upgrade" discs- only the more expensive "OEM" disc was bootable and installable WITHOUT a pre-existing version of windows.

a Manufacturers CD/DVD provide no way to run an actual windows install- they merely write a disc image to the hard drive- after rebooting a small setup program changes some of the settings to conform to the individual model of machine (in general the same image is given for multiple machine models) and the user is "good to go" so to speak.Yes but no one has answered my question, can you use the recovery console to to a repair install of windows? The Recovery Console does not contain the files neccessary to do a Repair Install.
As far as running a repair install from it there would be no reason...to start a Repair install you need to boot to a Windows CD so it detects existing installations of the OS.
Repair Install of XP

As far as the CD's as long as the version and installed Service Packs match any Windows CD will work. In other words if you have XPPro with SP2 installed that is the CD needed.

A Dell HP etc. will not offer this choice on booting to it which is why they can't be used.

There is a method of creating a bootable CD from the image on an OEM CD but that is a totally different procedure... Quote from: patio on February 27, 2009, 06:45:36 AM

So what your saying is it doesn't RECOGNIZE the previous versions of windows because the Service Pack on the computer is different then what is on the cd? Example the the cd has sp3 and the computer has sp2. If that's the case would the company have a sp3 recovery cd if it was originally LOADED sp1 or sp2 but the person downloaded sp3?

I didn't understand what you meant by "A Dell HP etc. will not offer this choice on booting to it which is why they can't be used."Sounds like a bad boot.ini file.  http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/624546

"I renamed my boot.ini to boot.old and ran the install discs. Sure enough, it didn't prompt me to do the repair. This appears to be your problem. You'll need a working boot.ini file at the root of the c:\ drive (assuming your OS is installed in c:\). Here's an example of my boot.ini.

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)PARTITION(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional x64 Edition" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect

Yours should be similar, but may vary slightly. Once that file is there, try the installation and see if you're prompted for a repair."

An OEM CD...that is one that says Dell, HP, Toshiba, or whoever will not work for a Repair Install...A Microsoft Genuine XP CD is needed for this purpose...
The OEM CD's when you boot to them will NOT show a repair option...they will only wipe your hard drive of all data and restore a Ghost image to the machine to take it back to Day One status as if you just bought it...i can't explain this distinction any clearer....

As far as the boot .ini goes i don't know what you're asking...if it had been stated you had issues with the boot.ini then a repair install may not be neccessary as there are ways to repair the boot.ini from the RC.

Let us know where this goes from here... Quote from: patio on February 27, 2009, 02:06:02 PM

I assure you I have a xp home sp2 OEM cd from Microsoft that has the "Repair' option on it. And I have used it a few times to do repair installs on my computer in the past. And it did keep my data on the drive all I had to do was do updates and change some settings after that.

Solve : Triple boot problem.?

Answer» OKAY, i will try and make this as clear as possible.

Okay, well, I had a dual BOOT that was working fine. (XP media CENTER, Vista Ultimate) I decided to do a tri boot which added Xp pro to the list. Well, the problem is, is that when i installed Xp Pro onto the third partition. I did not like it so i uninstalled it. Now it still shows up in boot manager, but i can no longer get to vista.

Any questions, please ask.Why did you even try that?

Didn't you already know that the older
OS has to be done first, then Vista?

XP CDs do not learn. They do not know what the new system is. The old OS has an old version of the loader and will overwrite the new stuff.

Here is a illustration.  Let's say you have an UMBRELLA.  Now you want to push the umbrella up the chimney.  Whatever you do, do not  try to go back down.

You will need to install vista again. Hope you have data backups up to date. Vista and anything after it handles the boot process and menu very differently than in the past...
DLoad and install BCEdit and follow the instructions for the install...
There is an addon app you don't need...it's a Vista Tweaker but you can install it if you like.
Once your done installing POWER down and re-boot...
Then run BCEdit and you will see the options for cleaning up boot items...
Good Luck.

it does say on the system requirements, "DVD-ROM drive"oh, well I don't see this as a problem because i have a dvd drive, hahaRegarding the TOPIC title of this thread: er, let's not go there FOLKS!
The contact INFO for ordering it on CD's as replacement for the DVD's is on the inside tab of the Vista plastic case...
You will need to authenticate it over the phone and give a credit card # for the shipping costs...Ah HA!

see it's a good thing I try to qualify stuff I say with "as far as I know" or an equivalent

Anyway, continuing down this road, there should be a floppy disk version...

"please insert Vista Disk 314"You would need to buy 5 floopy drives just to get to the Welcome to Vista screen.... HA HA HA

Solve : windows microsoft office word 2007?

Answer»

Hello,

We brought an ADVENT laptop as our Vaio blew up and i NEEDED a new one for work. It came with vista but only a trial version of microsoft office word 2007.  Iv done all my paperwork for my bussiness on 2007 but the trial runs out at the end of the month and we CANT afford to BUY the full version just yet.  I noticed when i saved my last document that when i saved it acually COMES up with a propmt that i think allows me to open it with other prorammes (like word) altough the documents may look a little different, but only if i checked the box, which i hadnt done with any of the other documents

Some of the documents are templates.

Is there anyway i can convert them so i can open them with word just until  i can afford the full version.

Any advice in simple terms pls as im a bit COMPUTER thick !!You could DLoad and install Open Office which is Free...
Once you have every document saved in their format it will be backwards compatible with Office '07 just in case...OpenOffice will open normal Word 2007 files, but not Word 2007 templates (file format .dotx).  So, see whether you can either convert those templates to normal Word files, or save the templates as .docx, which is the format for older versions of Word, and which can be read by OpenOffice.

Solve : Vista and don't know what to do?

Answer»

My hard drive died last week and I had to get a new computer.  I now have Windows Vista and had XP.  The guy that does all my computer work built me this new one and tried to get as much info off the old as he could.  Lucky for me he got all my Webshots as that is one of my favorite programs.  I had to download Webshots program again and when I did, all my pictures I had on old computer went right on to Webshots, which I thought was so cool (I am computer stupid, so that amazed me!). However, the problem is that the picture does not show up on the whole screen.  There is a black band at the top and bottom about an inch and a half wide.  I have changed every setting I can find and still cannot get it to show up on the entire screen.  I have not changed monitors, just the computer.  I have Webshots set to fit the screen and I have Vista set to fit the screen.  Does anyone have any solutions?  I know I'm being fussy about this, but I want it to cover the whole screen like it used to.  Thanks in advance for any help.Is the screen resolution on new computer set to the same numbers as on old computer?I don't remember what the old one was set on, but I believe it is the same.  I wish I could tell you more.
OK.
Right click on desktop, click "Personalize", then "Display settings". What resolution is listed?

Open Windows Explorer, navigate to:
C:\Users\your_name\Documents\Webshots Data\album-xxxx
Right click on any picture listed in right pane, click "Properties", then "Details" tab.
What numbers are listed under "Dimensions"?My Display settings is 32-bit

When I went to the Webshots Data and right clicked then clicked on Properties, all I got were four tabs that said General/Sharing/Security/Customize.  The Customize was only to customize a folder.  There was nothing listed called Dimensions.  I right clicked on the Webshots itself, and on the photo, same thing came up.

Quote

Okay - sorry - Display is 1024 by 768 pixels

The other thing you showed me about how to get info off of Webshots Data, I don't have anything that pops up and looks like that.  Just General/Sharing/Security/Customize.  And believe me, I clicked on EVERY Webshots thing I could find and never came up with that.Look at my picture again.
Do NOT right click on Webshot folder, but on ANY PICTURE (!) file in album -xxx folder (RIGHT pane).I did click on a dozen pictures in the right pane and still continued to get the window that said Genera/Sharing/Security/Customize.  Nothing else.  Sorry - my version of Vista doesn't have that.  I have the Basic Edition if that MEANS anything.
ATTACH one of picture file in your next reply. Must be under 256 KB.I don't know how to do an attachment from that file.  I tried with the Additional Options below this posting page and it must not be one of the type that is accepted here.  I'm so sorry - I know I'm frustrating you.  I did tell ya - I'm REAL computer stupid.

Unfortunately I have to leave.  It's 2:15 here in VA and since everybody's got to believe in something, I believe I'll go to bed!  Must get up and go to work in the morning.  (Since I type manuscripts at home, at least I can stop for a quick nap!)

I truly appreciate the help you are giving me and I will check back tomorrow to SEE if you have any "instructions" I can try.

I really, really thank you for trying to help me.

What is the extension of the file, you want to attach? .gif, .jpg, etc...?Hi - Glad you're still willing to help.  The IMAGES are jpg. However, I got on Webshots Support and looked through the questions people have asked and it says the pictures are specially encoded so you cannot use them elsewhere, and it also said that their software is not able to support widescreen.  They stated they did have a stretch feature but discontinued it as it made the pictures distorted.  So maybe having to download the program again caused my problem of the pictures not taking up the whole screen.  And it does seem funny that when I click to download a picture, there is a place to click on for widescreen, which I do.  But they say their program is for standard monitors.  So I guess I just have to deal with it as it is.

I do appreciate your help.  If I missed something in what I read from Webshots and you know of a WAY to make it fit the whole screen, I'll try again.  If not, a million thanks to you.  You were really patient and helpful.

Debby
Yeah, you're right. I didn't think about wide screen issue.
I use Webshots as well, but when I got wide screen LCD monitor, I stopped downloading pictures from Webshots, because of the very same issue.
Instead, I'm using this site: http://interfacelift.com/wallpaper_beta/downloads/date/any/
Beautiful, wide screen wallpapers, and free.

Solve : can you change os without...?

I was wondering can I change my operating system without changing computers?  Do I have to change the circuit board to do this or what?  I need another operating system for business but can't afford to purchase another computer pc laptop.  Thanks. You can change the operating system without changing anything else.
Depending what you have, and are changing to, you can perform an "upgrade install" which should preserve your settings, files and programs.
I recommend you back up all your data first, and ALSO check your computer against the OS's requirements.  Also make sure your programs will work with this new operating system.
Hope this helps.I have Windows Vista, I heard you can partition the hard drive.  Is it hard to do?  I have to backup everything if I change my Vista to XP for example.?Do you need to run XP on your vista computer? Why do you need XP?
Is it for a certain program?
There a few ways to go about this. What are you TRYING to accomplish?I need the xp for some important business and yet I still need my vista at the same time. This may be what you need for that.

Question. Do you have the Windows XP CD and do you have a COA that allows to to go back to a older system? This is more of a legal question, not a technical one.

You said yu can not afford another computer. Is so, you can not afford to buy a legal Retail XP Pro CD with COA.
For much less money you can buy a REAL a business computer with already installed XP, COA and a good warranty. Sometimes people confuse business class computers with game computers, Not the same thing.  Business class means reliable, simple and fully supported. And right now they are cheap, cheap, cheap. And legal. And with solid warranty.  And it works property if you plug in into a wall socket.

And, at the same time, you can play games on the Vista machine next to you.

No I don't have either the windows xp cd or the COA.  I need the windows xp for some on the side business to make a little dough.  That is why I am asking if it would be worth partitioning my hard drive.   If I don't I'll have to find another way of making some. Can anyone tell me where I can download windows xp so I can partition it into my hard drive so I can get the show on the road?  I don't know exactly what I am doing but I need it for my business to make some $$$ and I need the information as soon as possible. Here is a solution that does NOT break rules of the forum or MICROSFT. At this time, you can buy cheap used hardware with a warranty for a fraction of the original cost.  It is a veryu smart business investment.

On the other had, using a pirate XP on a Vista machine is asking for trouble. Not just the legal issue, but it is a pain in *&*^!

What I was trying to say in an earlier post a factory reconditioned hardware comes with a legal XP. And cost less that XP! Do the math!

You buy a naked PC with not mouse, no keyboard, not monitor, even the power cord is missing! But it works! I just got one for $132 and it has XP pro on the 40GB sata drive, has 1GB memory, 8 USB ports, standard VGA output. It is an Intel  P4 at 2.8ghz single core.  An the $132 including shipping inside the USA

No I am not advertising for anybody. Lots of outlets have these. I now find that I could had a DVD drive with it for the same price if I had looked around!

When you are in business, you must have a legal copy of XP! Buy a refurbished factory certified  desktop and you have what you need!

Don't risk trashing you new computer. Buy a good used warranty box that will do the job.

Do the math. It is very hard to get a real retail XP CD that will install on any machine for less that $140.

If you buy a XP CD without the COA tag and product key, you may be getting a stolen or pirate copu. The refurbished PCs from the factory have real legal OEM versions of XP.

to find a refurbished PC vendor, just Google on 'refurbished PC' or pick a brand name or model name.

My choices is 'Optiplex XP'
which brings up great deals on that model with XP installed.

Of course, you need to check out the vendors reputation.

I was of course referring to the explicit reference to "download" a copy of XP. there is no way that "downloading" a copy of XP is legal.

The barebones kit+COA solution is a nice cheap way to get a legal version of XP on your machine.

Another option involves MS's allowance of "downgrading" with the Vista license. Limitation in that case being that you would need to remove Vista.

Solve : reload window?

Answer»

I want to reload the window for my laptop,HOWEVER the dvd ROM cant read when I put the CD in, I want to ask can I save the window to my external hard drive and use it to reload the window? And how I can do it, PLEASE help me on that! Thank you.
This is not straight forward...what Window are you REFERRING to? Are you talking about your background image on your desktop or what....not enough info...This can be perceived as a million different issues..  I think it's fairly clear that the OP means "Windows" with an 's''

Assuming (safely) that the OP means the Windows operating system, that leaves another question:

What version of Windows?  Since the OP did mention DVD, I can probably make an assumption (fairly safe) that it's Vista.

OP:

You need to go into your computer's BIOS and change the boot order so that the computer boots from the DVD-ROM drive first.  Every computer is different in this regard:

Dell computers require pressing F2 during startup to get into the BIOS.
ASUS, MSI, and Gigabyte motherboards require pressing Delete during startup.
Others may require another "F" key (F1-F12), Tab, Esc, or Enter.

Once you're in the BIOS, you have to change the boot sequence.  Your hard drive might be listed first, which is why your computer is not booting from the DVD.  Move the DVD-ROM drive to the top of the LIST, save your changes, and try again.1Nope....2.argh. I cannot decide between the two numbers. 2 is twice what 1 is, but you can't have two without at least 1.this is gonna bug me for ages. Quote from: DaveLembke on January 14, 2009, 03:29:15 PM

Solve : Windows 7 can't find Vista partition??

Answer»

I dual-booted VISTA and 7.

In Vista, the Vista partition appears as C, and the 7 partition is S.
In 7, the 7 partition (which is drive S in Vista) appears as drive C, and the Vista partition is missing??

How can I find this partition in 7?
Thanks. Go to Drive Management and see if you can see the Vista partition.

In Drive Management, be careful not to click anything or TOUCH the partitions. Just see if it's there or not.Mine does not show up either...so far i've yet to find a fix for it.
I' reported it but have not recieved any reply.http://www.neowin.net/forum/lofiversion/index.php/t714774.html Quote from: KristopherWindsor on January 13, 2009, 04:23:45 PM

it's that way by by design...

W7 by default hides access to all other system drives(or partitions) so as to not confuse the end user

but you can add a drive letter to that partition in disk management in W7 so you'll be ABLE to see it...

REF: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en/category/w7itpro/
Good LuckNot showing in Disk Management either...

However that partition was imaged with a newer App i was TESTING for drive images...perhaps that has something to do with it.
It's getting wiped anyways so no biggie.ahh, the famous rule: When your dome with a computer, don't forget to wipe!Actually the Vista UltimateX64 install is the one i am testing...
I'm PURPOSELY letting it run unactivated to see how the cripple features behave.
I've lost some Admin priveledges and 3 different notifications are coming at about 7 minute intervals at this point but i can still get online and run most apps.

Solve : computer continuously reboots?

Answer»

My computer will turn on, Windows XP will load in about 3-5 minutes, 3 error messages come up and Norton attempts to load, then after Windows is loaded for about 2 minutes the computer will restart itself. This happens EVERYTIME I turn the computer on.
The first message says;

message box title:        MemeoLauncher.exe - .NET Framework Initialization Error
message body:             C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727\
                                     mscorwks.dll could not be loaded
second message;

message box title:        reader_sl.exe - Unable To Locate Component
message body:             This application has failed to start because MSVCP71.dll was
not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem.

third message is a Microsoft Windows error report window that says:
The system has recovered from a serious error
A log of this error has been created.
Please TELL Microsoft about this problem.
We have created an error report that you can send to help us inprove Microsoft
Window. We will treat this report as confidential and anonymous.
To see what data this error report contains, click here.

the window that comes up with the data says:
    Error Signature
      BCCode: 1000008e  BCP1: C0000005  BCP2: F5EAB21D  BCP3: F12BD7EC
      BCP4: 00000000  OSVer: 5_1_2600  SP:2_0  Product: 768_1

then there is aot of legal verbage and at the bottom of the window it says:
To view technical INFORMATION about the error report, click here.

that message says:
message box title:       Error Report Contents
message body:           The following files will be included in this report:

  C:\DOCUME~1\COMPAQ~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\WERde48.dir00\Mini011309.06.dmp
C:\DOCUME~1\COMPAQ~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\WERde48.dir00\sysdata.xml

Before I can even close those to data boxes to send the error report, the computer reboots itself.  I have and XP disk that I was going to try tomorrow, if that doesnt work, any suggestions without having to reformat the harddrive would be great. First, do this (in Safe Mode, if necessary):
1. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
2. Click the Advanced tab (Vista: click Advanced system settings).
3. Under Startup and Recovery, click Settings to open the Startup and Recovery dialog box.
4. Clear the Automatically restart check box, and click OK the necessary number of times.
5. Restart your computer for the settings to take effect.

Then...

Download, and install WhoCrashed: http://www.resplendence.com/download/whocrashedSetup.exe
Open it, click Analyze button.
WhoCrashed will create report.
Copy, and paste it into your next reply.

In addition to Broni's advice , bear in mind this simple fact : in a rebooting
mobo the first culprit that should come to mind is a failing power supply.
With cost cutting these days you generally get a smaller wattage PS than
is required. If your processor speed is megahertz  then small wattage
PS will be OK...say 250 . On the other hand if it's a Gigahertz CPU then
450 watts is in order. An extra fan wouldn't hurt. In short check the PSU. Peace !Thank you for your suggestions, but, before I posted I TRIED 2 different power cords, and I unchecked the "Automaticaly restart" box and clicked ok once, but before i could click ok again, the computer restarted itself again.

When I try to start the computer in safe mode, a lot of file paths come up, then it goes to a black screen with "safe mode" in the corners, and "windows xp sp2" at the top. From there, nothing happens.

If anybody knows anything I can do, I will be so grateful! Download Windows Recovery Console: http://www.thecomputerparamedic.com/files/rc.iso
Download, and install free Imgburn: http://www.imgburn.com/index.php?act=download
Using Imgburn, burn rc.iso to a CD.
Boot to the CD...let it finish loading.
When the "Welcome to Setup" screen appears, press R to start the Recovery Console.
Then, follow the steps from here: http://icrontic.com/articles/repair_windows_xp, starting below this picture on page 1:

Solve : I had a little folder mess up?

Answer»

ok so I was clearing HARD drive space off my PC I went into my documents folder and deleted a bunch of old saved games and stuff how ever I guess I deleted 1 WRONG folder I cant remember the name of the 1st folder but I know the one of the folders in it was called roaming. now with that folder deleted a bunch of my programs stoped working like google chrome windows media player. so I am now running a system restore not to sure if its going to work. anyone know ? is there another option if system restore does not work? thanks in advance.hey guys system restore did the trick ive never seen a restore go that quick all good stuff though thanks anyway guys 10 minutes between posts...
Just for future reference your roaming folder is important. They are for when using Roaming USER Profiles, either with or without Active Directory on domains. It allows users to have their own settings whichever computer they log onto. Just leave it, even if you are using a single machine not on a network.

Or, if you're on Vista/Windows 7, where the default "APPLICATION Data" folder is within the Roaming folder (many programs USE the Application Data folder... for, um, data, and saves, and ini files, etc.Quite right.. thanks for the extra 'important' info. Should of seen that coming

Run a anti-virus scan and if  the scan finds virus have them quarantined.

Also check the virus and spyware section (this POST should be there really, this is a virus question, not a Windows question, you'll get more answers that way) , i think there are links to downloads like 'Anti-malware' and 'Super anti-spywareware'. Have a good read at the stickeys at the top of that page. Loads of info.

Solve : cant acess my computer using vista?

Answer»

hi! you know what whenever i have problems in Vista i just check and visit a site that deals with vista and other OS.  i suggests you check this out-  supportrix.com/SUPPORTRIX/Main.php?do=LearnMore.  It might help you resolve your problem. I hope so. Thanks for your help but most of that tech stuff goes on and on to the point where one must have a degree in pc programing to begin to understand. I was finally after a week able to trick the system to allow me to submit the f 11 command upon turning on which it never did before and i was able to put the pc back to in box statis and im now reprograming all my stuff back into it like the printer and all my accounts. The computer command works now and i can see all my disk drives. Im so lad i was able to finally able to restore back to thois level for before it would only go back a few days which wasnt enough. It will take me a whoile to get everything reset but i figured out my hotmail default program which was tricky and all the rest i can handle. What a horrible week i thought i was going to have to install a new program and maby worst. Thanks for careing. 719 361 0114. Just to clarify for any readers who may not know what you're talking about, you discovered that hitting F11 during startup of your computer started the running of the recovery partition on your hard drive, thereby reinstalling Windows and restoring the entire system back to its original configuration.  Right?

By the way, is your computer made by HP?Yes my pc is made by HP.   Yes your statment about what finally enabled me to reset the pc back to in box statis is CORRECT however it is very important for you to know that nothing else mentioned in this forum to help me worked to solve the inability to acess my computer. After all else failed i tried to reset the pc as last resort because of all the work it takes to reinstall everything and pressing f 11 didnt work eighter. It seems i had to try the f11 act about 12 times before it took ahold so its important i guess not to give up trying to reset it that way. All is well now after all night reinstalling everything needed like it was before the reset. Thanks and i hope this tells the whole story in a way that can be understood. Quote from: joemarotta on May 18, 2010, 01:37:41 PM
it is very important for you to know that nothing else mentioned in this forum to help me worked

Why is that important? And why have you posted your phone number?

this was mentioned regarding malwarebytes:
Quote from: joemarotta on May 16, 2010, 01:07:15 PM
It ran sucessfully and it said it repaired 43 problems but everything i download seems to say this same type thing.

malware bytes doesn't state it "repairs" anything- it detects, and attempts to resolve, malware issues but at no point does the program say it "repaired" problems.

Now, a rogue scanner program, on the other hand, would say exactly that. And, since "everything you download seems to say the same thing" It's fully possible that "everything you download" is in fact the same rogue malware, set to redirect all attempts to download.

Of course since it's already been factory restored this is no longer an issue, but it important for to know that your entire problem was caused by a malware infection, not when "some creap changed a setting".

here's an interesting tidbit:

Quote
A friend tried to record a downloaded movie 3 weeks ago but it didnt work so he stopped trying.

This is very interesting! Many things like movies that are downloaded/pirated from the internet can have "gifts" of malware or trojans. Additionally, doing a search for recording software brings up loads of rogue software of that nature, it's possible that it was this attempt to record, or the act of downloading the movie, that caused a malware infection.

Genius. I believe it was you that wanted to be sure it was a viris or similer and not some creap changed my settings. I guess you wernt able to pick out all that happened or maby were just not communicating well with each other. The answer is i dont know because resetting the pc back to in box statis would have re set the setting changed by somebody back to origional when all was well or maby it was a viris that re setting the pc was able to get rid of. I once again truley feel that respect should go to those that call them selves experts in solving pc problems however after being a auto tech for 32 years really leaves me to believe that the whole works of a home computer is changed so OFTEN with up dates and such that there will never be anybody that can understand more then a small degree of whats really going on with computers. That business is made up of opinions and trial and error and perhaps wishful hopes of one being physic to the ability of getting anything done to solve problems in this field. I havent seen more then a half a handfull of pc problems solved through expert help other then resetting things back to a point where somehow everything worked ok. Maby someday ill have another opinion to this matter. Thanks again to all who tried to help me and once again i guess well never have any idea what was cousing my problem in the first place or what action really fixed it. For now the wishing well fixed my problem and i will be more carful what actions are taken on my pc from now on. Im using AVG security and i hope thats ok for most. By and good day.  Joe  Marotta. Have you seen our malware board? the malware fighters seem to know exactly what tehy are doing and very few people that are helped don't finish with a malware-free computer. Besides, I'm sure there are people that would say the exact same thing about auto-repair. Anyway, here's an anecdote I read in one of my computer books quite some time ago.

Let's say somebody who knows little about cars notices that every time they take a sharp turn, there is a DISTINCT rattling sound.

First- Because they don't know much about cars, and they know that they aren't supposed to make that sound, they take it to a mechanic.

After hearing about the problem, the mechanic cannot really think of what could be causing a rattling sound- and wants to hear the sound themselves, so he rides as a passenger with the driver. When the car turns, the distinct rattling sound is heard yet again.

Before the turn completes, the mechanic opens the ashtray and removes a pebble. the sound disappears.

What does this highlight? First: People who aren't familiar with cars tend to be nervous when they encounter something unexpected (such as a strange noise during cornering)

Second: you can describe a problem all you want, but if it's something obvious, it's easy to overlook, regardless of wether we're talking about cars, computers, or rocket fuel. In the same fashion, if somebody says their car won't start, do you first ask them if they have fuel? Not usually- most people are well aware of the fact that cars need fuel. similarly, if somebody says their PC won't power on, we don't instantly ask if it's plugged in- the fact that it needs to be plugged in should be as obvious as a car needing fuel.

The other diagnostics are SIMILAR as well- updates are irrelevant, since each update updates a specific part of the PCs whole setup- for example, drivers might be updated, etc. But regardless of what is updated, if it causes a problem that part can be traced down, and once, say, it is discovered that a sound driver is causing the issue one can look back and find out when it was changed (much as one might view the service history of a car to discover that the faulty alternator was installed a few months ago, etc). Once the cause is found as well as how it came to be (with varying degrees of difficulty) then a solution can be reached.

For example, I can tell you that there is absolutely no "setting" anywhere that can be changed by anybody that would cause Explorer to crash as you've described- in a similar vein, there is no dashboard button that will cause the engine block to fall out of a car.

Troubleshooting PC problems is only a "guessing game" if there aren't enough details being given- much as would be the case trying to troubleshoot the "Rattling" issue on a automobile forum. Thankfully, as would be the case in a thread on such a forum, the "guesses" aren't just wild, but educated guesses, based on the information provided. As far as I can tell, the only really notable thing you presented re: your situation was that explorer was crashing. Since this was pretty much the only symptom you could describe, and there are a lot of different reasons explorer might crash, Allan went with the most likely cause- Malware, Upon running a scan, you note that the problem "repaired 43 problems", as well as a mention elsewhere of somebody downloading movies, and it was only then that it was easy to put the various CLUES together for a more concrete diagnosis of malware. In the meantime, you had solved your problems using a different method, and then you return and say that this is how they always get solved (in your experience) this is similar to if the aforementioned "rattling car" owner had fielded a few questions over the phone and then simply traded it in, and then returned to the mechanic and told them that that was how most car problems got solved. As an auto mechanic yourself I'm sure you can appreciate the feelings that could result from such claims, especially after only a superficial diagnosis based on second hand observation.

Solve : photo disk sharing with vista?

Answer»

using vista home premium i burn photo disks and cannot share them with friends who do not have this operating system - why is that ?
do i need to re configure ANYTHING or is it a case of ' lesser ' systems not being able to work with something produced on higher level ?Sounds like you're not "finalising" the burn sessions...hmmm hear what you say but that cannot be really as the disk always plays on my PC but always other friends cannot get the disk to run on their computers.
i USE a good burning studio and good disks and it always advises me that the disk is finalising  after i have burnt it.
would really appreciate some input to this irritating " you'll have to come round my house to see the photo's then " situation.I'd still TRY a different burning SOFTWARE.  Try CDBurnerXPI'll just have to stop by to see the photo's.....
Kidding.
Try Soybeans suggestion above...BTW what app is that you're using to burn ? ?thanks so far for your SUGGESTIONS gentlemen - will be on the case this weekend to see how it goes - meantime i am using Ashampoo burning studio 9 - which in every other respect performs well - thanks again - keep an eye on me to see how i go !!Will do...

England ? ?

Yes, London and North Eastern Railway Pacific no. 60041 Salmon Trout. A member of the A3 class. All that class except 2 were named after racehorses. Salmon Trout won the 1924 ST Leger horse race.
A beast of a machine i'd say...
Pretty impressive. After World War 2 those smoke deflectors were fitted. (The twin steel plates at the front). I think the A3s looked much better without them. You can see the beautiful shape of the boiler in this shot (actually a MODEL) of Salmon Trout's more famous stable mate, No. 4472 "Flying Scotsman" in original LNER condition.

For a pre-war machine the sleekness surely hides it's power.
The model photo is more detailed and shows it much better...

At any rate you've chosen a Noble namesake for yourself...

Solve : looking for an alphabetizing program?

Where can I FIND a program that alphabetizes a list?  http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&rlz=1T4GGLJ_enUS216US216&ei=dEP5S9KCOYL-8AbPmtHjCg&sa=X&oi=spell&resnum=0&ct=result&cd=1&ved=0CB0QBSgA&q=software+to+alphabetize+a+list&spell=1what do you mean "alphabetize"? Solve : programs not listed under "all programs"?

Answer»

Why is it that some "programs" listed in the "uninstall/change" list don't show up under "all programs" or when I do a search at the start button search box?  One is visual c ++  Isn't this a programming language?  Others appear to be not of a programming nature.   I don't know what they are because I can't find them and don't know if they are essential or not.  Yes, that's normal behavior.
The all programs link on the start menu opens up a list of SHORTCUTS to a number of programs. If you WANT to, you can edit that list to have more or less programs on it. You can change the names of the shortcuts and the order in which they appear. In other words, the all programs is not really a direct map into all the programs found in the programs directory. When a program is installed it creates a shortcut for itself and places it in the list of the selected user, or PERHAPS all users.
Which means that you could edit each user's list of programs. So that some users will not even SEE the programs available. And you can even make shortcuts and put them in the list of programs, and the shortcuts could be something other than REAL programs. And so forth that all non-blah blah blah.
In short, it's only a list of shortcuts.

Solve : Windows Explorer (WE): Column Headers?

Answer»

When using WE, each page has default (1) column headings showing the INFORMATION to be displayed (e.g., Name, Type, Size, etc.) and (2) the view in which the information will be displayed, e.g., List, DETAILS, Tiles, etc.)
How can the defaults for a given page be changed such that whenever I return to that page (be it 5 minutes or 5 months later), the column headings and view will be the ones I selected? Are you saying you want different folders to have different columns?Exactly, and even different views as well.Explorer should remember per-folder changes that you make. Please describe what problem(s) you are experiencing....for example:  I set the headers and views for a particular file to show only
"VIEW: Detail" and "COLUMNS: Name, Date Modified, Size."
When I come back to the file later, especially after a reboot, the file will have gone back to perhaps
"VIEW: List" and "COLUMNS: Name, Date Acquired, Rating" and then I will have to reset the view and columns to what I have an interest in.

For many given files that I frequent, I would like to be able to set each to the different views and headings that are useful to me and not have to reset over and over and over when they've gone back to their default settings.um... that doesn't make sense... I've always use details view- and those folders that I use thumbnails for remember that, as well.

The "list" view doesn't have column headers, either...

If you have something like deepfreeze installed that would of course cause this.My LIST view has columns--I just selected a file at random, changed it to LIST view and the column headers were Name, Album artist, Date modified, and Size.

I don't have "deep freeze" installed (I don't even know what that is.)Okay, well let's try this:

Start/Run/Regedit and Delete these two keys:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ShellNoRoam\BagMRU
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ShellNoRoam\Bags

Then go to the following two dword keys and change the values of both to 000003e8:
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell]
BagMRU Size

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ShellNoRoam]
BagMRU Size Quote from: Rdg on May 23, 2010, 10:41:44 AM

I don't have "deep freeze" installed (I don't even know what that is.)

List view: (note that it has no columns)

Details view:

Now, if I understand your original post correctly- Windows Explorer saving the view setting (details, with columns) but it isn't saving the columns you have selected.

If you want to have a number of folders with customized columns, you're probably out of luck-the storage mechanism only stores 128 folder views (sounds like more then it is) and if you revisit a folder whose settings have been purged it will appear using the defaults. (these settings are stored in the keys Allan just posted, I believe, as well as in hidden desktop.ini files in each folder)

Personally, I set all my defaults to the Details view (folder options, View tab, "Apply to all folders" When in details View). The columns save position and size, and have not changed as far as I've NOTICED, and I use explorer heavily for managing folders and files.

I'd give the bagMRUsize entry a change, as Allan suggested. You'll have to reset your options yet again, but with any luck they will be persistent.

Another possibility is some sort of conflict between different explorer instances if you have "use a separate process for each folder window" option.
If I did this post-with-attachment correctly, please note that my List View does have columns.  Are we looking at/different situations??

[recovering disk space - old attachment deleted by admin]that appears details view. And if it is in in List view then it is probably related to the fact that you aren't actually looking at files but rather at a "searches" namespace. my "searches" namespace only looks as you portray when I place it in "Details" mode. "List" Shows it as I portrayed earlier (the items are listed top to bottom, then left to right).

That being said, if your issue is with saving the view state of your "searches" area I don't believe that you can (it might only save for file system folders, I don't know)Please note that this time my screen shot is of the file named "Documents" rather than the file named "Searches"...and that I've included the window that shows I am in the LIST view...and  that there are four columns showing.
I don't understand why I am talking about oranges and the replies seem to be talking about giraffes??

I think I should back up my registry before I start changing it, don't you?  ...but I don't know how to back it up.  What do you anticipate the changes will do?They will do two things:

1) Clear the cache memory for WE customizations (deleting all current Windows Explorer customizations and reset the views to default) and
2) Increase the view memory of WE to 1,000

By all means, if you aren't used to making registry changes you should back it up:

Here are three options:

1) Click on START - RUN and type: Regedit (press ENTER). On the menu bar click on file, then export, CHOOSE where you want to save it, then enter a name for it in the box titled: File Name. At bottom put a tick in "All", then click on save. If you ever want to restore the saved version, just IMPORT it.

2) System Restore (it should save a COPY daily, but you can always create a restore point manually.

3) The best method, in my opinion, is to download and run ERUNT. It's the best registry backup utility available - and it's free!!!

Of course the REAL best method is to use disc imaging software

Solve : Pop up when computer turns on?

Answer»

Hi. This is my first post, so I am going to try to put as much info as I can.

I recently decided to clean my computers hard disk drive by removing programs I do not use anymore. Now, every time I turn on my computer, this pop up appears.

I do not know if uninstalling programs would do this. So what possibly CAUSED this and how can I remove this?

Manufacturer: Hewlett-Packard
Model: HP Pavilion dv6700 Notebook PC
Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU  T8100 2.10 GHz
Memory (RAM): 3.00 GB
System type: 32-bit OPERATING system
This is also a windows vista laptop.

Thanks Computer_Commando for CORRECTING me about the hard disk drive. This is what happens when you delete something without using Windows "Add-Delete Programs".  BTW, you did not "clean memory".  Memory is RAM and is "CLEANED" every time you turn the computer off.  You "cleaned" the hard disk drive (also known as: disk drive, HDD, etc., but never Memory).I used the add/remove programs in the control panel.Download and run Mike Lin's Startup Control Panel - http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml
Delete any entry RELATED to modicl.dll or the program you deleted

Solve : Windows 7 connection problem?

Answer»

I'm trying to CONNECT a W7 Pro to my office intranet (server is Small Business Server 2000) using a wired connection.

Most of the other NETWORKED computers are running XP Home, and I've got one W7 Home Premium that connected to the Workgroup (not a Domain) without any fuss.

However, I'm replicating the steps I did for Home Prem but there SEEMS to be 2 visible problems:

1) It says it is connected to an "Unidentified Network", which is fine. However, the Network window is empty.

2) I should have been PROMPTED for a Username/Password at some point, because that is necessary to access the network. Never happened.

Any ideas on how to 'force' W7 Pro to prompt for the User/PW? Thanks in advance. No one can help? I think I'm just missing something minor but for the life of me I don't know what~

Solve : Windows 7 search doesn't find files?

Answer»

I am using Windows 7 HOME on a Dell PC. I have indexed everything. When I do a search of a directory by datemodified, certain files do not appear, although others in that same directory modified on the same day *do*. Very puzzling.

If I click on one of those files and look at properties --> details, down near the bottom it has a DATE modified that is completely wrong, often months or years out of date. If I find the file with a different search (like by name) the "date modified" column shows that older date, rather than the correct one.

Since I backup my files daily, using a datemodified search to find the ones that have changed, the inability to be sure I'm finding them all is a problem.

The missing files are always .doc or .xls files, rather than the newer versions, but it *does* find some doc or xls files, even in the same folder, and I'd PREFER not to update everything to the newer version as not everyone can read them.

Anybody else having this problem? From what you describe it would appear that the Windows 7 search feature does not keep an up-to-date index on and why do you use this method instead of some other method have been recently changed.
It would be helpful if you could describe what type of backup system you are using. On the Microsoft website they recommend using a backup program that is part of Windows 7, but no mention is made of backing up files modified on a certain date.
The Windows 7 backup feature backs up files on a schedule. Apparently you are not using that method.
Please describe in a little bit more detail about how you do your backups. Have you used this method before on an earlier Windows operating system? And did it did work as expected?
Sorry I don't have the definite answer for your problem. Many users choose various backup methods. One is to make an image file of an entire partition that contains files of interest. And other method is to synchronize two directories, one on a local machine and one on a network server. Additionally, there are third-party programs that may do a better job than the tools available in Windows 7.

I believe you are correct that there is something buggy about how Windows 7 keeps its index.  On my previous computer (through April 2010!) late each day I would just do a search of my main directory (a large one, with many subdirectories) and tell Windows XP to find all the files and folders that had been modified today. As far as I can tell, it never missed any of them. On a weekly basis, I would tell it to find all the files modified in the previous week. It never missed any of them doing it that way either. This is (or was) a nice simple way to do a daily or weekly backup of my files. Periodically, I still backup the entire main directory onto a CD or DVD, but I still like my daily or weekly flash backups!

If I need to learn about a different method intrinsic to Windows 7, that's not unreasonable, but it isn't the purpose of my post. My post was asking about the search in Windows 7. There are many reasons to want to find *all* the files with a certain characteristic, not just backing them up. If the search doesn't work properly, it's a major bug. I was HOPING there was something I needed to tweak to make it work right!

The only thing they admit to, so far, is that it can not correctly keep Media files up to date. But that is a rather serious problem. Many users want to use Windows 7 to catalog their songs and videos.

Sorry I don't have a clue as to how to fix this.
For what it is wroth here are a few SITES I have looked at, but I  did not find a clear answer to the problem.

This one says he re boots in Vista to do a search.

Solve : Five super-secret features in Windows 7?

Answer» 1. Software that turns normal displays into touchscreens

I don’t know how Microsoft did this. It seems like they would have needed cooperation from the hardware MANUFACTURERS. Nevertheless, it appears that the company has developed its own highly-secret software that can turn any standard LCD screen into a touchscreen. Now users will no longer have to a do a simple click-and-drag to resize photos. Instead they’ll be able to reach up to their screens with both hands and use a set of complicated multi-touch gestures to do the same thing, and it will only take 5-10 seconds longer. Upon further digging, I also discovered that all mouse and keyboard drivers appear to be in a time-bombed phase-out cycle.
2. PC-to-PC version of the Zune ’squirting’ feature

One of the most underused features in the Microsoft Zune platform is squirting, which allows a Zune user to share a song with another Zune user over Wi-Fi (although the squirted song can only be used for three days or three plays). Microsoft thinks this feature is very innovative and deserves much more attention and usage than it has received. Therefore, it has quietly integrated it into Windows 7. This will allow cubical mates to share songs with each other from their massive libraries of Zune Marketplace selections, and laptop users will even be use to shoot songs to each from other across the aisle in the subway, for example. In a surprising move, there is currently no PC-to-Zune or Zune-to-PC option. However, I’ve learned that Palm has also discovered this feature and apparently developed its own module to allow PC-to-Palm Pre squirting and vise-versa.
3. Registry: The Starter Edition

Much like the way Microsoft is offering a crimped version of Windows 7 called “Starter Edition,” I’ve also discovered an alternate version of the Windows Registry. Since this MYSTERIOUS alternate Registry does not have an official name, let’s call it “Registry: The Starter Edition” because it is a greatly simplified and dumbed-down version. In fact, instead of five hives like the standard Registry, this one only has two: HKEY_CLUELESS_USER and HKEY_CRAPPY_MACHINE. I’m still not sure what purpose this alternate Registry will serve. The only thing I can think of is that it is designed to simplify the process of building Windows software for developers who have been writing Windows code for decades but are still too lazy to follow best practices in terms of file organization and user security.
4. Dual-boot software to run Mac OS X, known as ‘Training Camp’

Apple opened the door to more users - especially IT pros - in recent years by building Boot Camp into its Macintosh computers to allow them to run Windows along side Mac OS X in a dual-boot configuration. Not to be outdone, Microsoft as a secret dual-boot loader in Windows 7 that allows it to emulate Mac hardware and configure Mac OS X as an alternative boot option using the standard off-the-shelf Mac boot discs. In a fit of cleverness, Microsoft has decided to name it “Training Camp,” which I found out when I uncovered the Help file. However, I’m not sure what it is training for. If you have any ideas or theories, please post them in the discussion below.

5. The DAVID Pogue spambot

The most puzzling and nefarious bit of code that I discovered in the bowels of Windows 7 was what appeared to be a spambot that could be used to FLOOD the inbox of a targeted user, or even take down the person’s PC. Of course, this could just be next iteration of Windows Live Mail. However, I’m concerned that if this code fell into the wrong hands, it could be used to unfairly target the PERCEIVED enemies of Windows, such as New York Times tech writer David Pogue, who has recently been viciously targeted by the blogosphere as a Mac partisan in the guise of an objective technology journalist.

Have you discovered any hidden features deep within the recesses of Windows 7? Any features you wish you could find if you were really looking? Post in the discussion below i've found this article from the link: http://blogs.techrepublic.com.com/hiner/?p=3120 to now more about follow this link

Solve : Clock wont stay set!?

Answer»

Ok this is killing me, I normally am pretty good at fixing my computer, but this one has me stuck

My clock will not stay on the time I set it,  it JUMPS around during use of my computer.  It never seems to go backwards only forwards.  It also doesn't just jump hours and minutes, often jumps months and years.  Now I custom built the PC about two years ago and have never had trouble.  Recently I did a fresh wipe and installed Windows 7... Now the issue didn't start there, I ran Windows 7 just fine for about over a week and not once did I have an issue with my clock.  Though on an unrelated topic my Frames per second were dropping in certain games, thus I decided to do one more clean wipe and see if that would fix the problem.  Oddly that worked, but now I'm left here, with my clock that RANDOMLY switches to what EVER times it wants.  This time change also takes place in my bios. I would love some help and would give major kudos to anyone who can figure this out...

Things I have already tried
- Resetting Bios via jumper and battery
- Replacing the battery with a new one (did this twice)
- UPDATING the Bios
- Making sure the time in Bios was correct
- In Windows the correct time zone is CHOSEN
- Time sync with time-a.nist.gov, time-b.nist.gov, time.windows.com, time.nist.gov, time-nw.nist.gov (all work at first but time eventually changes)
- Disabling Sync with an Internet Time server
- Disabling adjustment with Daylight savings (getting desperate) You've tried all the obvious things... when did you last check for malware/virus/adware infections? Some malware is known to change system time settings in order to nullify AV protection. You did a fresh install of Windows 7, following which you were OK for a while (Is that right?) but maybe you got reinfected. Another explanation would be defective hardware (motherboard chipset)

My vote is on defective hardware.

What's the make and model of your motherboard?try some of the suggestions listed for this fellow with a similar issue:

Solve : Ipv4 and Ipv6 go from working to limited?

I have a gateway MT3423 using hope premium vista.  When restart my computer the internet works and Ipv4 says it has the internet and IPv6 says local on wireless network connection status.  After a min. or two both  change to Limited.  It does have a connection though.

I have done a ping in command prompt and it can do a loop but everything ELSE either runs out of TIME or does 50%.

did ipconfig /all but cant copy it.

I would love any help I've been trying everything I can find but nothing seems to apply.  Thanks for your time.
Have you gone to Gateway's website to see if there is an updated driver?  At the very least you should go into your device manager and UNINSTALL your WLAN and reboot so it will reinstall a new copy of the driver.  I've seen that fix your issue before.  Additionally, if you KNOW anyone who has one that you could borrow, you could try plugging in a USB wlan to and connecting it to your router and see if the problem persists; it will help you isolate the culprit.

LOL

Save a screenshot of the other icons, crop out the "dickie" and save it as an image. Then set the custom icon in User Accounts.10-9-8-7-.....There is only ONE reason the frog and duck could be missing.

It's obviously a huge conspiracy to eliminate frogs and ducks from the face of the EARTH and replace them with robots.

Solve : Is there something called copy to clipboard??

Answer»

I have a huge list of MP3's all grouped together in ONE FOLDER that I want to separate in the albums that each of the songs belong to.  But, the list is huge and copying(left click and then copy), GOING to a folder(the album name), then pasting is alot of work.  Is there a way to have a button or feature where I can click on a FILE and have it automatically saved to a common location without have to navigate to that location.  Something where, I can pick a file and then hit a button and have it go to some common place, like a clipboard? Are you familiar with Cut, Copy, Paste keys?

Hold down Ctrl-key, select files that go to common location with left mouse button. While still holding down Ctrl-key, press C-key.  Let up Ctrl-key, navigate to destination folder, highlight with left mouse button, hold down Ctrl-key, press V-key.  All files previously highlighted are copied.  To move INSTEAD of copy, press X-key instead of C-key.OOOOOOOOOOOO.

I didn't know you could hold the alt key down and pick each file.  I knew about using the box to highlight a group but the files are not side by side.

That is alot of help.

That does not link to the actual physical PC. I know its possible to remove or bypass the p/w but its risky, so I'd rather wait and see if she can find anything, a receipt maybe call her credit CARD company for receipt , i mentioned it so ill wait to see if she TAKES ACTION lol.
TYVM for UR help tho everyone really appreciate it.So the boot sequence is this.

Solve : Quick Question about HDDs?

Answer»

Hello,

I've heard that it's bad for your hard drive if you turn off your computer suddenly (ie holding down the power button).  Is that true?  If so, why?

Thanks in advance. The reason why you are not supposed to shut down a computer with the power button is that doing this can prevent the OPERATING system (and/or any running programs) from closing files that may be open, or can interrupt the writing of files. These things can corrupt the file system.
Bottom line, if you do a hard shutdown you should follow it up by running chkdsk /R to FIX any file ANOMALIES that may have occurred. QUOTE from: Salmon Trout on May 30, 2010, 05:00:38 AM

...you are not supposed to shut down a computer with the power button...

Even worse would be to just pull the plug out of the wall socket... Sudden power outages while the computer is running are well known causes of FS corruption and worse.
