Solve : Help uninstalling program?

Answer»

Hello everyone.  I have a Toshiba Satellite A135-S4427 laptop running Windows Vista Home Premium (Service Pack 2), 32 bit, 4 gig ram, Intel T2250 processor (1.73 ghz) with a 110 gig HD.

I noticed that my hard drive seemed rather full (only 35.8 gig free).  So I ran windows disk cleanup, I ran CCleaner and I ran Wise Disk Cleaner with only minimal success.  So I looked to see if there were any programs that I could remove (that I don't use).  In the add remove I came across "WeightWatchers On-The-Go", an old program of my wife's, and it said that it was 20.5 gigs.  So, after asking the better half (who didn't even remember the program), I tried to uninstall.  I then received this error:

>SetupDLL\SetupDLL.CPP (468
PAPP:Weight Watchers On-the-Go
PVENDOR:WeightWatchers.com, Inc.
PGUID:02ED27A2-8C9B-467B-A219-808F87AD5C7F
$9.1.0.419
Windows  Service Pack 2 (6002) IE 8.0.6001.18904

with an OK button below.  When I click OK, I get this error from InstallShield Wizard:

Please do the following:
  -Close any running programs
  -Empty your temporary folder
-Check your Internet connection (Internet-based Setups)
Then try to run the SETUP again.
Error code:  -5001

I've tried to run it in safe mode also, with no avail.  Any help would be appreciated

[recovering disk space - old attachment deleted by admin]You can either reinstall and then uninstall it, try REVO Uninstaller, or just delete the folder manually (it won't uninstall it, but with a program like that it's no big deal - the files will be gone and the space will be free) and leave the program entries in the registry - no harm done.

Also, either disable and then re-enable system restore (note - all restore points will be deleted IMMEDIATELY) or just disable it completely and start using disc imaging software on a regular basis. This will free up a lot of space. Actually, if you have a 110 GB hard drive with 38.5 GB free, it is not "rather full" at all. It is only 65% full.
Well, I tried Revo and got the same messages.  And I deleted the folders under program files.  After a restart, it still says that there's a 20gig file there that can't be installed.

And I know that a 67% full disk isn't overly full, but it should be only 49% full. Quote from: manco3 on May 30, 2010, 12:33:12 PM

And I know that a 67% full disk isn't overly full, but it should be only 49% full.

Who TOLD you that? A hard disk salesman? Or somebody with Seagate shares? It is nonsense.

Download and run Mike Lin's Startup Control Panel (http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml). Uncheck anything related to the program you uninstalled and reboot. What I meant to say is "but when it SUPPOSED to be only 49% full."  What's bothering me is that there is 20gig of junk on my hard drive that I don't want and can't get rid of.

Allan, I ran the Startup Control Panel and saw nothing there related to this programOkay, then you shouldn't be getting any messages when the OS loads - are you? And if you are saying that there is still something on your drive that is using space and you don't know what it is, download and run treesize (http://www.jam-software.com/freeware/index.shtml) Quote from: manco3 on May 30, 2010, 12:58:32 PM

How do you know there is 20 GB of junk? Where is it located? And how do you know that the disk "should" be 49% full? Maybe if we know how you obtained this figure, we can work out what to do next.

Solve : Easiest & Cheapest Way to Convert from 32 bit Win 7 Hm Prem to 64 bit?

Answer»

I have DETERMINED that my 3 year old quad core machine is 64 bit capable.  I know I can not upgrade from 32 bit to 64 bit (of course I have 3 Win 7 upgrade licenses).  I'd like to move to 64 bit.  Is there an economical way to do this?  Or MUST I simply BUY a full version of whatever flavor of 64 bit Win 7 I'd like?

I will appreciate any ADVICE or suggestions.Which Windows 7 do you have?
The lull retail package comes with both 32 and 64 bit.
If you have a OEM upgrade, you only get one flavor.
I have Win 7 Home Premium.  My interest in switching to 64 bit relates to my belief that, with the 64 bit O/S, my three year old machine may perform somewhat better at VARIOUS functions involved in video editing.  If that were to prove to be correct, I could perhaps hold off one more year before moving to I7 technology.

At this point, it appears I'll have to buy a full 64 bit license, and do a clean install.  I have found no less expensive way to make the switch. That is exactly what you have to do, buy a new install cd and then do a clean or upgrade install.  I to had the same problem and searched for 6 months until i finally gave up and bought the dang cd.

Solve : my screen is appearing really wide after being connected to projector?

Answer»

I have just had my computer connected to a projector, but now it is unplugged and the screen is appearing really wide.

This has happened before but not sure how it was fixed, but I think some number setting had to be changed.

I have gone into the personalize section in the control panel, and that doesn't appear to be the problem.

Yes that is a reasonable screen setting.... but what your not TELLING this GUY is that is standard for a 4:3 monitor, not a laptop aspect RATIO of 16:9.  Also telling patio to "be quiet and that his post is useless" is just plain ignorant on your part. Patio has a broader knowledge base and a deeper working knowledge of computers than you.

What should be told to this person is to set the resolution to default for his machine... how you do that since you said you didn't know how is to right click on the display and select either properties or screen resolution. then select the screen resolution you want and click apply

You both fail math. 1280x1024 isn't 4:3, it's 5:4. 16:9 isn't a "laptop aspect ratio" it's a widescreen ratio. some laptops have widescreen ratios, some don't, and desktop LCDs can be had at 16:10 and 16:9 ratios as well.

Also it's not really that "reasonable"... a "reasonable" setting would be the proper resolution for the LCD- if the monitor is in fact an LCD. for a CRT, 800x600 is the safest bet. Whatever the case, it's easy to fix by fiddling around with the resolution settings.

I wouldn't consider 1280x1024 a "reasonable" resolution to use for me either, since none of my computers would be able to use it. my main desktop is 1440x900, and my laptop is 1080x800 (both widescreen, but neither one "becomes 4:3" just by changing the resolution, especially when the resolution in the x or y direction exceeds the capabilities of the screen. Solve : Windows 7 install headache?

Answer»

Quote from: JJ 3000 on May 09, 2010, 11:01:21 PM

Does the box that the disk came in say say "upgrade" on it?
Is this the 64 bit version of windows 7? Did your client have the 32 bit version of XP?

these three points are not relevant- since you cannot perform an upgrade install of Windows 7 on XP.

The CPU & RAM question is valid though.

Quote
I'd let it sit at that screen for a few hours before I gave up.
I wouldn't. my Windows 7 install took about 20 minutes for the entire operation; 45 minutes on a single, early step is almost certainly a hang.

Quote from: Kando on May 09, 2010, 10:33:35 PM
The .MIG file was created on the computer that I am having the problems with. If we try to reinstall 7 and it does not work the client will probably want to go back to XP. Therefore I need to know if there is another way to import/access the information and get it reloaded into XP.
I already answered this. the same way you made the Mig file, with the settings transfer program. If you used the XP builtin program then you can "extract" the files with the same program.

Since I am having problems with just INSTALLING by the numbers I don't think that forcing the dvd to do anything is what I want to try. After a couple of DOZEN successes, maybe, but not now.
the only issue you've hit so far is the fact that setup seems to hang. the fact that you can't do anything else is because your system is configured to only boot from the hard drive, so you cannot boot from the DVD.

The box says upgrade, which means clean install if using XP which we were. There is 1gb of ram and the cpu is 2.4GHz single core. The package had disks for 32bit and 64bit, we used the 32bit.

Sitting for a few hours might be ok if I was not being paid by the hour or if it was my personal machine.

The boot process sounds very reasonable, and that will be the first thing I check when I return. I still would not feel comfortable playing around with the disk until there were more successful install under my belt.Goto to your trusted local computer shop.  They will charge less than $100.00.

The savings in time is well worth $100.00.

Good LuckSUCCESS!!

Yeah, turns out it was the boot order that was messing with me. Still don't know what hung it up last time.

Changed the boot order to cd first and all is now well. Of course there were bumps in the road, had to delete the Windows.old file to make room and took another hour to restore the data, and another hour to install random programs BUT IT IS FINISHED.

Thanks for all the help

KandoSo, all was supposedly well, until he tried to listen to some music. There was no sound and there was a message saying that there was no audio device attached. The speakers were working before the INSTALLATION and they remained plugged in. I figured it was the UAA and told him to RUN Windows update in the hope that it would install under the Optional Software.

The sound still does not work after Windows update, and I am heading back there this Saturday.

These are simple, 2.1 powered speakers, nothing complicated.

Any ideas on this one?

ThanksDrivers...

Don't trust the Windows ones to work always.
Travel to the manuf. site...
Just to catch up on this, turns out that the sound card itself is the problem. Installed the UAA, installed a Dell fix, installed drivers from the manufacturer's site for Vista and 7 and after all that there is still no sound. Apparently this card just refuses to work with Windows 7. I am sending the user a list of cards that work with 7.I don't know of a single sound card in existence that uses the UAA driver- it's use is limited to the host based processing "audio codec" on board sound.Yeah, tried it all just in case. Can I just ask what Kando's hourly rate is please?Different schools of thought were clashing in this thread.

On one hand, Kando was asking for assistance with utilizing the means to the end, not to the end itself.

On the other hand, as I was told in tech school: "There's the real world way, and there's the Microsoft way."

Yes, it's cleaner to simply back up the existing data (preferably by cloning--Acronis or Ghost), wipe the drive, install the new OS from scratch, and restore (extract relevant data from the clone--Ghost Explorer or Acronis' equivalent).

Kando decided to go the "upgrade" route (yes, it's not a true "upgrade install," but the purpose is still the same--it's a "shortcut").

Bottom line: he was asking for help with the route he was going down.  It's not a "bad" route--just uncomfortable for those with experience that have learned (sometimes the hard way) that it's better to do a clean install than use an upgrade or upgrade-like route.

...and since it turned out that the problem Kando ran into (boot order) would have happened regardless of how he did the install (unless it's by some unattended method from a network share), all that bickering about how he was going about it was for naught.  Quote from: killerb255 on May 26, 2010, 01:50:31 PM

...and since it turned out that the problem Kando ran into (boot order) would have happened regardless of how he did the install..

Looking over the posts...

The main focus of nearly every one was fixing the boot order. After a page and a half of coaxing, they finally did. Either way, if their original attempt at installing hadn't failed, the boot order would have been irrelevant- (AFAIK) performing a clean install from within an OS doesn't reboot to the Disc anyways. Since that original attempt at installing 7 from within XP met with a hang, however, the only course of action was a completely clean install by booting from the disc. Thus the repeated appeals to change the boot order. (which eventually were answered ).

Solve : Vista restore point?

Answer»

I apologize, you're with Vista.
IE8 is treated by Vista as an update.
Go Start>Control Panel>Programs & Features and click on "View installed updates" in LEFT pane.
You'll find IE8 among updates.
Uninstall that update.

"No Windows version has such a feature, since it's physically IMPOSSIBLE.
You're simply confused.
Since there is no restore point other than today, you can't restore computer to any earlier date. PERIOD. "

I must be thinking about something else but I can't imagine what.

Think about it for a moment- creating a restore point means essentially saving the current state of certain files and settings so that you can go back to them later.

It's simply impossible to say "Ok, computer, make a restore point for last week" since there is no way to know what those files and settings were last week to save.
It's odd that you only have one restore point, though. Normally windows creates a new one every time it boots as well as every day, and most program installs cause a restore point to be created (this is what you noticed with XP- being able to choose from a calendar was selecting a restore point that was already created, and going back to it.)

Even computers don't have the ability to time travel

It'll be listed as "Windows Internet Explorer 8"BC, XP would let you go back to earlier settings, voiding the settings you just applied and you could pick it out of a calendar. Whether that's called a restore point or not I don't know. I do know that I accessed it through System Tools and then System Restore.

Am I the only who has ever experienced that??? No one knows what I'm talking about, how frustrating.

But thanks, Broni, I finally have a way to get rid of IE8.

Thanks! Quote from: Vonique on May 31, 2010, 07:40:24 PM

We know exactly what you're talking about. And we're telling you, it fell under the very same limitations. all that has changed is the way it is presented.

Windows XP System restore, welcome page:

It gives you two options. To restore to an earlier time (using an already set restore point) or to create a  restore point (which can be used later for the first option).

selecting to restore to an earlier time gives you this, the calendar you have noted multiple times:

Note that I can only restore to one of the dates SHOWN in bold. There is no way to ever restore to, say, restore to may 4th. I can restore to earlier months were there are restore POINTS, but I cannot "create" a restore point for a past date, for reasons that should be pretty obvious.

Creating a restore point does not show a calendar- all you can do is give it a name:

Solve : !!!Vista Ultimate mem diagnostic tool never finishes!! cant boot now!?

Answer»

My desktop machine is a home-made build (Abit mobo- )and I have had Vista Ultimate as the only OS . I am not sure which situation has caused my problem so I will describe the 2 possibilities: I had a disfunctional usb flash drive that I attempted to rescue ( tried to format, assign a drive letter, etc; using the windows cmd interface...) I ended up throwing the flash drive away.....Windows worked after that until I chose to run the "memory diagnostic tool" at the next boot. I restart the machine and the mem tool starts. It completes and then just starts again.....It never manages to finish and no matter what I try , I cant get it to let the OS load! It's stuck in this loop ! I let that sucker run all day just to see.......
I have tried all the boot fix commands and system recovery from the dvd... I couldn't use system restore because I didnt have a restore point available and if I did a complete PC restore , it would have put me back to July of 2009. ( My mistake to not have kept current on those..) Can someone help me?? I realllly do not want to wipe out my C drive because all my programs and such that are on other partitions will be ruined. You may have faulty RAM... if you have more than one stick, try with each separately.

I did as you suggested , removing one RAM stick, turning machine on... then the other.  STILL, I have the same problem. I believe that the RAM is fine anyways. I may try different Ram sticks and see but I feel like the memory isn't the issue . Something is a miss. The OS never loads because the "windows memory diagnostic tool" continues to run repeatedly, with never any errors found . It just keeps repeating itself.  Is there any type of command that I can use to instruct the tool Not to run??(cmd.exe)
-Thankyou for the help. Do you think it could be that my drive letters somehow got re-assigned or changed when I was messing with the USB flash drive?
I dont know how confusing this will be but below is a list of how my drive letter assignment is on each partition : ( might help ?)

From cmd.exe on Vista Business DVD  I could see list of volumes (only logged in on D: drive) * Makes me think windows might be on D drive now-
---------------------------------------------------
volume0=vista dvd in dvd rom drive*
volume1=letter =C Label =N ntfs 293 GB
volume2=letter =H Label =P ntfs 405 GB
*(volume 1 and 2 are one complete hard drive. The other volumes are a second hard drive )*
volume3=letter =J Label(none) = dvd rom*
volume4=letter =D Label (none) =ntfs  175 GB
volume5=letter =E Label =E ntfs 175 GB
volume6=letter =F Label =F ntfs 175 GB
volume7=letter =G Label =G ntfs 340 GB

It looks like something changed between drive letter and label assignment for drives C,H,and D.
I had a P drive which isn't shown here . It just shows P as being a label of C.......soo weird
-Thankyou for the help.try this

start in safe mode

open command prompt

type this & press Enter

bcdedit /bootsequence {memdiag} /remove

Safe mode does not WORK. I opened cmd.exe from the dvd. The message I receive is: " The boot configuration DATA store could not be opened. The requested system device cannot be found. "
- I tried changing drive letter to see if that made any differece but I kept getting the same message  when you say cmd.exe do you mean the Recovery Console?
In Vista its "system recovery options" - it's similar to recovery console, yes.try this in recovery console

bootrec /fixboot

Solve : copy and email dvd?

Answer»

How do I copy a disc of an MRI image and email it?Hi,
Before you copy a disc please check the size of disc. Because it varies from email provider to email provider the size of attachment files.
If the size of FILE you are trying to attach is less than 10 mb(most of the Email service providers allow this MUCH size) then attach it.

Solve : DESKTOP GREYSCREEN?

Answer»

I'm currently using a HP Pavilion dv3000 with Windows Vista. Everytime i switch on the laptop, it's fine all the WAY until the desktop. There's just a GREY screen with a mouse. The mouse is movable. Ctrl-Alt-Dlt works and so does Task Manager but they are no use for solving the problem. I've tried F8 as well but to no avail. Please HELP me with this problem. What happened between the last time the system booted normally and the first time it did not (new HW, sw, virus, ERROR, etc)?

Solve : USB Memory Sticks?

Answer» Can anyone tell me if I plug a USB Memory STICK into my computer, view files on it, then take it out, does it leave any trace of what I viewed or read on my HARD drive, in my registry, anywhere?Yes, under recent documents viewed, the shortcut will exist.  However once the memory stick is REMOVED, the shortcut is a shortcut to nowhere.Thanx Commando....I have another question, if I May....If I wipe the free space on my hard drive....will it completely delete all old files and recently visited web sites?

Also, If I make a backup disk, and then REFORMAT my HARDDRIVE, will it be as if starting from scratch, with a new computer?
No, "wiping free space" won't delete old files or temp internet files. This can be done either through Windows or your browser's options, although neither method gets everything. A program like CCleaner is a little more effective, but don't use it to clean your registry.

Solve : One disk Per computer rumor?!?

Answer»

Ok So after some thought I decided I wanted to buy the new win 7 but I heard a rumor that said that when you buy win 7 you can only install it on only one computer once you have it registered or windows activation. Is that true that if i try to install it on a diff computer I won't be able to make it work? Quote from: comda on June 03, 2010, 05:46:44 PM

How is a known fact a rumour? You've been told about this on countless occasions.Sorry if this goes off topic.

What parts exactly make a computer?  Is it just the hard disk drive because this is where the program is stored?  What happens when someone has to replace their HDD?  Do you have to get a new registration number for windows? Quote from: Doug on June 03, 2010, 09:44:38 PM
What parts exactly make a computer? Is it just the hard disk drive because this is where the program is stored

That's defined in the EULA as:

Quote
1.1 Installation and use. You may install, use, access, display and run one copy of the Software on a single computer, such as a workstation, terminal or other device ("Workstation Computer"). The Software may not be used by more than one processor at any one time on any single Workstation Computer.

Note that the last portion "may not be used by more then one processor" seems to PRECLUDE use on multiple processor machines. It does- that is actually from the XP Home Edition EULA. The Pro version is more verbose but allows for a lot more:

Quote
Installation and use. You may install, use, access, display and run one copy of the Product on a single computer, such as a workstation, terminal or other device (“Workstation Computer”). The Product may not be used by more than two (2) PROCESSORS at any one time on any single Workstation Computer. You may permit a maximum of ten (10) computers or other electronic devices (each a “Device”) to connect to the Workstation Computer to utilize the services of the Product solely for File and Print services, Internet Information Services, and remote access (including connection sharing and telephony services). The ten connection maximum includes any indirect connections made through “multiplexing” or other software or hardware which pools or aggregates connections. Except as otherwise permitted by the NetMeeting, Remote Assistance, and Remote Desktop features described below, you may not use the Product to permit any Device to use, access, display or run other executable software residing on the Workstation Computer, nor may you permit any Device to use, access, display, or run the Product or Product’s user interface, unless the Device has a separate license for the Product.

This allows for use with 2 processors. Then again, Dual processors (note that dual processors are not the same as a multi-core, whereby two cores reside on the same processor) are not usually seen in consumer oriented designs. In fact, very few consumer motherboards even support multiple CPUs.

Quote
What happens when someone has to replace their HDD?  Do you have to get a new registration number for windows?

No. the Internet Activation might succeed anyways, and if it doesn't you simply perform the phone activation. No idea what a "registration number" is, but if you mean product key then maybe, but if that's required they will give it to you through phone activation.

Long story to the original question, The license says you can only install it on a single computer if you install windows to Computer A, you cannot then install it on Computer B (well, it might be but it's not covered under the License agreement (which, despite peoples claims to the contrary, they agreed to when they checked the box)). You can remove the windows install from the first computer and install it on the second, or you could even have some FREAKY weird setup whereby only one computer can ever be using it at the same time. Any barriers to people exercising these particular abilities are completely fabricated. Some people simply will not perform the phone activation, purely out of stubbornness, and then say that MS is "preventing" them from activating on a new machine, or when they replaced their HDD (which, I might add, will activate fine by the internet on the same hardware anyways).

Long story, short.  You are only authorized to use it on one machine at a time.  You can change HDD's, you can change processors, you can paint it PINK, but the OS is only LICENSED for one machine at a time. Quote from: rthompson80819 on June 03, 2010, 11:11:24 PM
you can paint it pink

Hey, I can paint my computer pink if I want to. I don't believe Microsoft has the right to ask me what color my computer is anymore. Don't ask, don't tell.I believe it only applies to Pink...

And don't try to change your network card. You don't want to know how much red tape is involved, and have you ever tried to find red tape when it's not the holidays? nearly impossible.

Solve : Everything onscreen becomes very LARGE?

Answer»

When I turn on my PC (HP Intel Pentium Dual 4.00 MB...Windows Vista) the size of everything onscreen becomes very large quickly in (3) increments. Most of the icons are offscreen. When I switch to the other screennames, the size is normal. I had successfully used System Restore before but it doesn't work on my screenname now and sometimes makes the other screenname items large also. I don't know how to pick a 'valid' previous restore point without just guessing.
I tried the suggestion here of going to Graphics Properties-Display Settings-Advanced Settings and setting Horizontal size to 0 (from 80) but it keeps reverting to 80.
I changed the Screen Resolution from to 800x60 to 1024x768 and it helps somewhat but it is a little blurry. 1152x720 seems a little better but do I really need to do that?
Sometimes when the cat touches the keyboard the enlargement happens. Is there a key(s) that can cause this? Are there keys that can correct it?
Thank you! DTCIDK maybe u have a graphic prob. Next time keep ur cat of the computer. U dont know wat might happen next. Any chance of getting a screenshot of this? Just hit the screenshot button and paste it into the paint program then SAVE it to desktop the paste it here...Thank you. Actually it's more often something I'm doing to cause this by handling the keyboard maybe. I thought I had solved the problem by going to Graphics Properties, then Display Settings but the option of 1440x90-60Hz is usually not available in the LIST under Screen Resolution. The OPTIONS skip from 1280x1024 to 1400x1050. Set at 1400x1050, a warning comes stating  'Input Signal Out of Range  Change settings to 1440x900-60Hz'. Sometimes that option appears in the drop down menu but usually not. It won't allow setting it manually here. Try to reinstall your VIDEO driver.

Those are your answers RIGHT there:

1) Uninstall Avast and reinstall the most recent version of Avast.
2) Download and install updated Intel Graphics drivers for your computer (either through the manufacturer's website or through http://www.intel.com)You should run in safe mod and search  for a virus.

My specs
Windows Vista
2.8GHZ processor
6 gigs of ram
500Gb harddrive
a basic video card.. nothing special

Please if you can think of something that WOULD help me out.. its really annoying having to restart the whole game when i want to change song or look somehting upHaving a basic video card might be the problem. Have you checked the HARDWARE requirements of the game in reference to the video card NEEDED?Hi,

Please check the below mentioned mininum system requirements for World of Warcrafts:

Minimum System Requirements:

Windows® System XP/XP64/Vista/Vista64/7** OS (with the latest Service Packs or updates):

- Intel Pentium 4 1.3 GHZ or AMD Athlon XP 1500+
- 512 MB or more of RAM (Vista requires 1 GB or more of RAM)
- 3D graphics processor with Hardware Transform and Lighting with 32 MB VRAM, such as an ATI Radeon 7200 or NVIDIA GeForce 2 class card or better

Solve : Black screen, white cursor, nothing else.?

Answer»
New headache for me. A friend turned on his computer and got exactly what the title says. NOTHING new was added, either software or hardware, and he scans regularly. Safe modes, last known..., all get the same thing. He thought it might be the video card, but a new card got the same results. Maybe the monitor? Nope, tried a different monitor and got the same results.

I Googled this and the answers I found all start with being able to boot successfully and all he gets is the black screen.

Ideas?

ThanksCan you get someone with a WORKING computer to make a cd? If so, go to https://help.ubuntu.com/community/LiveCD, make the cd, open terminal window, and run CHKDSK to find any potential problems. Quote from: computerhelpmaryland on May 18, 2010, 11:56:15 AM
make the cd, open terminal window, and run chkdsk to find any potential problems.

Solve : vista user folder?

Answer»

hello
i was trying to move my user folders (pictures and musics) to drive D and that was ok but now i got the WHOLE drive D appears inside my user folder...i dont know how that happen but can someone tell me how to remove it?EXACTLY what did you do and how did you do it?Moving User folders is a quick way to bugger a Windows install anyways...
Was it space issues ? ?Well, it's easy enough to move the MY DOCUMENTS and similar folders but yeah, if you don't know how it's possible to cause some problems.i just went to the location tab, chose the d drive and then move...all the files moved correctly but i dont know how and why the whole drive appears in the user folder...i still see the c and d drives though in the My computer1) I don't know what a "location tab" is
2) You moved d: drive?for each folder (documents, downloads, music, pictures) sepretly i did the following:

right click-proparties-location tab-move then i FOUND the d drive and clicked applyOkay, gotcha. That's the correct way to do it. For now, have you TRIED just moving them back to their original locations using the same method? OR you can TRY system restore.i dont want to move them back

i want to remove the d drive the copied itself inside the user folderI'm just suggesting moving them back for the moment to see if the problem clears. Then we can try to move them one at a time again to see at which point the problem arises. Can you post a screenshot of how it appears in Windows EXPLORER ? ?

Solve : IE8 unchecked, but still functions?

Answer»
Hello all,
Running W7 Home Premium on emachines, updated.

This is a rather obscure question but it's driving me nuts.

I have discovered through using CCLEANER WINDOWS cleanup, that even though I use Firefox, and have unchecked Internet Explorer via "Turn Windows Features on or off", I still get Internet Explorer temp files and cookies.  This happens when I go to Photobucket, and perhaps other sites.

Any ideas why IE8 is still seems to be functioning?

Thanx for any inputits possable that some of your cookies and temp files are SAVED their even though you use firefox Windows Updates. Thanks, for the ideas, but...

"its possable that some of your cookies and temp files are saved their even though you use firefox"

I CLEAR all cookies and temp files with CCleaner every day.

"Windows Updates."

CurrentOK, IE now really seems to be gone.

FYI, I re-installed and removed IE8 again going through the removal steps (third time) and now IE does not leave cookies when I go to Photobucket via Firefox or Windows update via Windows update.

I guess it's just one of those "miseries" of life.

Again, thanks for your time and consideration.Glad you found the SOLUTION

Solve : problem with minimizing game..?

Answer»

so whenever im playing WoW (world of warcraft), and i minimize it to, change SONG, look up quest, etc. I cant get it BACK up.. it stops responding. I have no clue why this would happen, so a response would be greatly appreciated    Thanks in advance, ryanI have had the same issue. Basically there is a background process conflicting with the WoW application. CHECK your apps with ctrl-shift-esc and see what is there that no longer needs to run e.g IE, Firefox or some other program..
It is stalling because something else is taking up memory.
on the task manager, the only thing that would be running is WoW, its WoW and chrome right now cause im on this, which means im going to have to RESTART WoW cause its not gonna be able to maximize. but wow is usually the only thing that i ahve running, unless you think i should start ending processes under the Processes tab.. idkTry alt tab ing back into it This happens to me on Vista. It may be your operating system failing to pull it back up or the game dosnt have that ABILITY. Quote from: +Asking on June 07, 2010, 05:48:15 AM

This happens to me on Vista. It may be your operating system failing to pull it back up or the game dosnt have that ability.

WoW does have that ability, as I do it all the time with no issues on both my XP desktop and Vista laptop. Most likely, something else is interfering but it is impossible to say without knowing what processes are running.Hummm...

Why? Since there are only 26 letters of the alphabet, and since A and B are reserved for floppy disk, and since you might need an optical disk, and possibly a pen drive and/or card reader, I wonder how you think you are going to do this. ALSO, what's wrong with simple arithmetic?

In fact,  since disk manufacturers use powers of 10, a "1 TB" drive will have 1,000,000,000,000 bytes, which makes the arithmetic even simpler than I previously thought.

Why should we stick with just the 26 letters?

Yes, but in an example such as that posed by Geek-9pm, folders may be all that's needed.  I'm a firm believer in creating partitions for different purposes but a very large number of partitions can, in my opinion, get out of hand.   If i were doing it, I'd use a folder for each my little elves  but I'd also have those folders on a separate partition.

Solve : Administrator privileges??

Answer»

I wet to up date my wife's computer and was told that I needed administrator  privileges. Her lap top has Windows 7. How do I get administrator privileges? There is only one account on her lap top and that is hers. Thanks for the help. The easiest way to enable or disable the Windows 7 build in administrator account
is from the command line. Open a command prompt with administrator rights.
This is done by right-clicking on the command prompt icon in the Windows 7 start
menu and selecting Run As Administrator from the available options.

To enable the Windows 7 administrator account:

net user administrator /active:yes

To disable the Windows 7 administrator account:

net user administrator /active:no

To change the password of the Windows 7 administrator account:

Net user administrator password

Next, log off your wife's account and log onto the admin accout.
A word of advice.... after doing this disable the new administrator account this is a hidden account that is not typically needed by most users and pose a security risk if left on without a password. So, when done installing W/e you need to disable the account as stated aboveIf hers is the only account then just boot it up and you'll be the admin.I just up dated every thing with out changing any thing. Then when I finished a box came up from Super Anti spyware that said I needed to up date. When I click on it it tells me,(the update must be done from an administrator privileges. The box closed I bring up Super anti spyware click on up date and it tells me it is up to date. All is WELL with the world. If it keeps giving such I will remove it and reinstall. Thank you much for your time and help. Oh I didn't understand what you meant by right-click on command prompt. Where is the command prompt icon? Are you talking about the start button? Or are you talking about the search box when you click on the start button? Please explain.what he mean was go to the start button and the go to all programs then go to accessories, system tools, command prompt..... then right click, run as admin  Very GOOD. I understand now. According to the computer she is the administrator. Quote from: I Shooter on May 23, 2010, 04:38:48 AM

Windows Vista and 7 sort of changed what it means to have an account that is an administrator.

When you log on, you are given a user token- this basically says what you can and cannot do. With Vista and 7, when you originally log on, it gives you a "stripped down" token, that denies access to a number of things. The "full" token (that is, the one that has all the admin privileges and so forth) is only accessible by either UAC or using the "run as administrator" option.I find this an invaluable utility in W7: http://www.blogsdna.com/2173/add-take-ownership-option-in-right-click-context-menu-of-windows-7.htm Quote from: BC_Programmer on May 23, 2010, 08:35:25 AM

Using the built-in Administrator account, UAC can be set to any level, and you'll never get a single UAC prompt!  Everything runs with admin privileges a la XP.

The same thing is true in Windows Server 2008/2008 R2, even with Active Directory--the built in domain administrator account is disabled as well, and when enabled, no UAC prompts. Quote

You say that LIKE it's a good thing.

There is a reason smart LINUX users never run as root when they can help it.

Besides, you don't need to run as the administrator account to do that. you can simply disable UAC altogether- now, even though your programs will still be running with a stripped token, ELEVATION is as simple as a function call! Now that's security! Quote from: talontromper on May 22, 2010, 02:12:57 AM

True.  In general, it's not a good idea to run as administrator on any OS if one can help it.

However, look at what happened when Microsoft decided to enforce this best practice with Vista (and 7) UAC: annoyed users.  People don't like change and one of the reasons Vista got so much negative flak was because of this.  I guess there really is no such thing as "convenient security"...

Perhaps I should have phrased this as a "last resort" option rather than "Annoyed?  No problem!  Run as the built-in administrator!"  It's definitely not something I would recommend to the average Joe.  Power users, sure, but only with the disclaimer that if something goes wrong, it's on them...

Solve : Vista to Window 7 PROBLEM?

Answer»

Hi all,

I'm attempting to upgrade to Windows 7 Professional from Vista Home Premium (the Custom Installation). When I reach the screen to select where I want to install the new OS, none of my hard drives show up.  Yes, I tried clicking on 'Load Drivers', but that didn't work either. I also noticed that in the 'Disk Management' tool built into Windows, my hard drive is still not showing up. I've tried just about everything. The only other thing I could think of is that some sort of malware is causing the problem. I've performed several virus scans, but the problem still persists.

So in short, why isn't the Windows 7 installer recognizing my C: drive?

*I've attached a couple screenshots showing the problem and another with my full specs.

ThanksI don't see the screenshots you are talking about but that's okay. I think your problem is the version compatibility. Vista Home Premium is the "home" edition of Windows. Windows 7 Professional is the "business" edition of Windows. Since they don't belong to the same edition there isn't a "direct" upgrade path between them. To upgrade to windows 7 professional you would need to have vista business. With your current windows you can only go to windows 7 home premium or ultimate. Here is a link that explains it in a chart type way.

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd772579%28WS.10%29.aspx

However, depending on whether or not you have the full version of windows 7 disc or the upgrade version you may be able to install windows 7 but it would be a clean install, which means it doesn't save any of your previous files. Quote from: kenster89 on May 26, 2010, 10:37:04 AM

Yes, I tried clicking on 'Load Drivers', but that didn't work either.

Where are you loading your drivers from?  A flash drive?  Does the flash drive have proper Windows 7 drivers for your hard drive controller?  Are you using a factory-built PC (i.e.: Dell, HP) or a custom-built?  If custom-built, what's the make and model of your motherboard? Why would you think a flash drive?

...because it's the equivalent of using a floppy in Windows NT/2000/XP/Server 2003 via "Press F6 to install a third party SCSI or RAID driver."  In Vista/7/2008/2008R2, you can copy the mass storage drivers to any kind of storage media that's readable by the installer, and a flash drive is most common.

...but then again, the one thing I didn't think of when posting last was that this is an upgrade install.  The drives "should" show up already in the installer.  Then again, if the Windows 7 installer is ignoring the current Vista HAL (for whatever reason), then loading the mass storage drivers from a flash drive could still be viable...

killerb255,

I tried loading from a Vista Recovery disk I had. But you've got something wrong...technically I am not doing the Upgrade Install but rather the Custom Install (since I'm going from WVHP to W7P) acronyms hahaha Well I have not seen no c drive in disk management before. That is really odd. I did a quick search online and things pointed to a possible malware infection or windows corruption. Before moving any further try the following.

Do you know how to check the drive for errors? Go to "my computer" right click "c" & select "properties". Then go to the "tools" tab & click the button "check now". Tell me if it allows you to run the tool or you get some error message. If it runs fine move to the next step.

What software are you using to scan malware? Go online to "windows one live care" and do a scan with it. Then search for "housecall" by trend and do a scan with it as well.

Once we can determine these are or aren't the problem we can move on. Also from the picture it may seem like you do need drivers to see the drive but I want you to check the above first. Do you have a raid setup? What type of pc do you have? Quote from: BC_Programmer on May 26, 2010, 02:55:21 PM

I'm the kind of person that will admit when I'm wrong, but I'm more likely to do so with a reason why.

So "HAL" is thrown out randomly?  Maybe I'm misunderstanding what the Hardware Abstraction Layer is?A little known secret is with Win7 you can perform a Clean install from the upgrade DVD...

Solve : Black Screen Upon Startup?

Answer»

Hello.

When starting up my computer, I get a black screen just past the loading screen (transparent bar and green blocking moving through). I am able to SEE my cursor and move it but nothing else.

I am USING an HP Pavilion Slimlime with a Dell Monitor (model no. E172FPI). I am running Windows Vista.

I contacted HP Support and we tried "Last Known Good Configuration" and "Safe Mode" to no avail. HP suggested that I do a system RECOVERY. In doing this, I would lose all my files.

My question is this;

a) Is there a way to fix the problem WITHOUT doing a system recovery and reinstalling the OS?
b) If there is no other way, I would at least like to save my files. I have a Seagate FreeAgent external hard drive but again, I can't startup the computer so I'm not sure how I would be able to save it?

Help is very much appreciated.

Solve : Pc Freezes On Start Up?

Answer»

Hi, I'm having trouble with another Pc which is/used to be Vista Home BASIC x64. Last week the Pc  suddenly froze while my sister was using it and we haven't had much luck getting windows to load since then because the Pc freezes as soon as windows starts to load up. I tried to use a recovery cd on it but didn't have any luck because the pc freezes as soon as the cd begins to load up.

After that I moved the HDD from the "bad" Pc to the one I'm currently using and still didn't have much luck getting windows to run with the help of the recovery disk. So I figured that it was all lost and installed Vista ultimate x32 on the "bad" DRIVE and everything is working just fine except that all the files found in the "Program files (x86)" are still there. Is that normal? What should I do with the programs installed in there? Such programs do not show up in the control panel for deletion, so should I just DELETE the folders?

Hmm, I haven't tried to transfer the HDD from the "bad" pc back to it because I was afraid that the freezing was being done by the graphics card and that it would just end up messing the HDD again. I went out, bought a new Graphics card and installed it on this pc and everything worked out just fine. So I decided that it would be safe to move back the HDD from the "bad" pc where it belonged along with the new video card....And yeah it seems like the freezing is not being caused by the graphics card after all. I think that it would  be safe to remove the new graphics and see what happens and if I make it to windows I can just delete the drivers of the new Graphics. (both Pc's came with integrated graphics cards)

Is it possible for the integrated graphics to cause the freezing even if the monitor is plugged into the new graphics card? I didn't disable the integrated card because I was told that it would automatically be shut off by the system if the monitor is attached to the new card. And I have tried to disable it via BIOS now that the new card is installed and the integrated card doesn't show up which probably means that it is off.

The only problem is that I don't know what is causing the freezing and I'm all out of ideas. The way I see it there aren't many options left, it is either the motherboard or the power supply (which I highly doubt). Is it possible for the graphics card to fry the motherboard if it's integrated and it is being overworked?

Like I said I'm all out of ideas and Open to suggestions. Any kind of help or tips will be highly appreciated, Thank you.
3 most common causes of freezing...in no particular order:

RAM issues...
DLoad and run MemTest...let it run at least 2 hours. Any errors at all and you have a bad stik of RAM.

HDD issues...
DLoad and run the drive diagnostics Free from the drive manuf. site. Run the Long test.
This will tell you if it's the drive.

Heat...
DLoad install and run Speedfan. Post your Temps here...Hi Patio! Thanks for the reply. I have have been having internet problems so I haven't had much of a chance to try out your suggestions. And I'm not completely sure that I can do it. I'm just an average Pc user who has OBTAINED little knowledge about hardware malfunctions due to having witnessed some of them myself. So, yeah my software and commands knowledge is not all that good. Anyway, are you sure that even if I managed to obtain those softwares I will be able to use them on the "bad pc" ? (keeping in mind that it freezes right on START up and that I can't even reach windows?)

And I just noticed this the other day...The integrated graphics card doesn't show up on bios at all. I have even taken out the new graphics card and try to disable the on-board one via bios but I can't find it. Think that the old card might be cause? any ideas of how to disable it now?

Solve : Boot up problem with Vista?

Answer»

I'm not SURE if this is the right section for this question ...sorry if not. I have a HP laptop with Win Vista on it , it was working fine last time I used it came home and went to use it and it starts up and goes to the last stage of windows update ...message says configuring UPDATES stage 3 of 3  0% complete Do not turn off your computer , then it just sits there with the lil icon spining around and after a few mins reboots and does same thing I have left it on and thats all it does over and over again any one have any ideas on what I can do to correct this , ThanksHi,

Try to reboot your machine and press F8, You will be presented with different options and one options is "Last Known Good Configuration".
Select "Last Known Good Configuration" and hit Enter.
Your system will restart and those updates will be reverted. You may have to install those updates again later.or try to boot in safe mode You need to boot to a Vista DVD. If you don't have one, you can download a Vista recovery disk here: HTTP://neosmart.net/blog/2008/windows-vista-recovery-disc-download/

Use an image burning program to burn the file to a disk. If you don't have image burning SOFTWARE  ImgBurn is a good program for this task. You can download it here: http://www.imgburn.com/

If you're not sure how to burn the disk, you can find a GUIDE for burning the image here: http://neosmart.net/wiki/display/G/Burning+ISO+Images+with+ImgBurn

Now boot to the disk and choose Command Prompt from the list of recovery options.
At the C prompt type:
cd Windows\WinSXS
and press enter.

Then type:
del pending.xml
and press enter.

Restart the computer and boot to the hard drive. Same problem?

Solve : "Blue screen of death" Please help?

Answer»

sry if i posted this in the wrong section.
i have a xps m1530 windows vista and everytime i turn it on i get the blue SCREEN of death 0x73
iv tried to install a new operating system aswell but it wont work cant go into safe mode either, so i did a bit of research and i think it has something to do with the hard drive, i think its corrupt can someone tell me if its that or something else and also iv thought about buying a new hdd would this one be compatible with XPS M1530:  Seagate OEM 500GB Barracuda 7200.12 INTERNAL Hard Disk Drive (7200RPM, SATA, 16MB Cache)Run hard drive diagnostics: http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=287 (or http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic28744.html)
Make sure, you select tool, which is appropriate for the brand of your hard drive.
Depending on the program, it'll create bootable floppy, or bootable CD.
If downloaded file is of .iso type, use ImgBurn: http://www.imgburn.com/ to burn .iso file to a CD (select "Write IMAGE file to disc" option), and make the CD bootable.

NOTE. If your hard drive is made by Toshiba, unfortunately, you're out of luck, because Toshiba doesn't provide any diagnostic tool. ill do that procedure now thanksso you WANT me to burn the file onto a disk and then put the cd into the XPS m1530 and it will automatically read the disk on startup and fix the problem?Pretty much so. I don't know, if it'll fix anything, but it'll diagnose your drive.
Make sure, the boot order in BIOS is set to read CD drive first.k so ill place fujitsu ata diagnostics tool on a disk and it will work right?

and also if i get a new hard drive then will a     Seagate OEM 500GB Barracuda 7200.12 Internal Hard Disk Drive (7200RPM, SATA, 16MB Cache)      hdd work on XPS M1530?

EDIT: iv also tried to install a new os and it says theres no hdd Quote

so ill place fujitsu ata diagnostics tool on a disk and it will work right?
No. As I said, the tool will check, if there is something wrong with your drive.

I'm not a hardware guy, but, if you need to replace the drive, your best option is to get it from Dell.k thanks ill do it now I had the same problem when I upgraded to Windows7 from XP Professional. My screen was blue and you could see the cursor. Dell worked on this problem for over 4 weeks and never found a solution. I ran into someone that had family that new computers in and out, and fixed the problem in 15 minutes. It was the driver to the video card NVIDIA, just roll the driver back to Vista drivers. If this does not work run a diagnostic on your Video Card to see if you need to buy a new one.  It may be uncompatible to your operating system Reboot and you should have a veiwable screen. Good Luck!    Quote from: Kelgirl on June 12, 2010, 04:17:34 PM

Solve : Desktop Background does not keep the settings specified.?

Answer»

Hey everyone,

Im using HP Pavilion dv6 laptop with Windows 7 Home Premium.

Ive been having this small but annoying problem. I'm trying to change my desktop background to an image of my preference. If i do it using Firefox on the internet (Right click on image > Set as desktop background), it will display a new window saying how would i like it: stretched, centered, TILE. I select Centered and it seems to be fine. However, restart the computer and the background becomes Stretched. I tried going into display settings and ADJUSTING back to Centered. It allows me to select "Centered" but when i click Apply, nothing happens. So i open it again and it still says Stretched. It seems that i cannot select any other setting besides Stretched.

I have also tried saving the image on my hard drive, set it as my background and then changing the settings. Problem REMAINS. I cannot set the setting to be anything besides Stretched. It accepts my change, click apply and nothing changes.

I have searched about this issue and some people advise that this is a problem with Active Desktop. They suggest to disable it through registry. Ive tried using that method but my system does not have the described path when using RegEdit.

Hopefully someone can help me out with this issue.

It also seems to happen in Windows Vista.

Thanks! Quote from: osva on June 11, 2010, 09:49:59 PM

Active Desktop was abandoned after Windows 2000 and was last included with windows XP. This is probably why the "FIX" doesn't work.

More to the POINT- this is a problem with Firefox, I think. It's manually changing options in the registry to change the background image, misses some new keys and values that are used with windows Vista/7, which after you reboot confuses the bejesus out of the desktop, which just defaults to stretched, and then you get the other fun features like only being able to choose stretch.

Best alternative would be to simply download the image manually and set the background that way.

Solve : "Help" window/tab opening automatically and freezing laptop?

Hi guys. I have a problem with my laptop, whenever i press N + j, k, U, y, 7 or 8  in succession whatever window im in will open a help window (in ff case it will open 50+ firefox help tabs) and everything will freeze. I can move the mouse but it wont click. I have to go in to alt+ctrl+del then task manager to exit the program.

Its a HP550 laptop, using Vista and the latest firefox. Also i have done a scan (several actually) with avg and it came back with some minor threats that where deleted.

Any help would be great as this is frustrating the *censored* out of me.

Thanks in advance

Ps. I apologise if this is in the wrong sectionOne would ask why would you press these keys in succession.. have they some meaning? You may want to try posting the topic in the Malware section of the site but I doubt that would help as your symptoms are so innocuous. You seem to have CREATED a very specific problem.. and we will need more info.
Please post your full system and software specs and anything else that could help.. be it error codes, trates or just random faults.
Hope we can help    Sorry i guess i wasnt clear, imeant it say n +j or n + K or n+ u etc.Does your laptop have a "Fn" or "Function" button?  Sometimes the keys on the right side will PERFORM alternative tasks when the "Fn" key is held down (or maybe stuck?).

Solve : Vista freezes at Welcome screen?

Answer»

I have a newish HP Pavilion laptop - AMD Turion2 - 4G ram - 250G HD - absolutely no problems until:

Upgrade of Avira antivirus suite v8 to v9.   Twas supposed to be fully automatic.   On auto reboot after installation (which seemed to take forever) when Vista started to load it got as far as the logon screen, I tapped in my password, the Welcome screen came up and that was that.   After a couple of minutes the screen went black (not blue).   Nothing, but I can open task manager.  It shows no applicatins running at all.   6 processes running etc.

I can run in safe mode (I am using this now)   I think I have managed to delete 99% of the Avira files. (I could not un-install).  this has made no difference.   I have had some help from Avira forum but they are now saying it is a Vista related problem if it still won't work with Avira not running . . .

Hope someone can help . . .  I really do not want to re-install Vista

John Have you tried re-installing Avira 9 again?Deleting Avaria probably didnt help you out much... it is needed since it intergrates with your system.

Try this:
Restart your computer. Right before Windows starts to load, start tapping the F8 key on your keyboard.
SELECT "Last Known Good Configuration"
This >should< bring you back to Avira version eight.
If this works, uninstall Avira, restart twice, and install version 9 again.
Also make sure all other antivirus programs that may be on your computer are uninstalled before installing another scanner, two residential scanners can not run at the same time without crashing your system at startup.

If this doesnt work, restart your computer and TAB F8 at the startup again, and select Safe Mode.
From SafeMode, uninstall Avaira. Sorry . . .    should have said that I have tried system restore (twice) I have also tried to re-install a fresh copy of Avira and it won't run - gives me an error message.  Avira 8 is mostly deleted, and anyway I have disabled it in the Task Manager, Services (local).

i can only do LIMITED things in Safe Mode with Networking . . .

Thanks guys . . .Go Start>Run (Start Search in Vista), type in:
msconfig
Click OK (hit Enter in Vista).

Click on Startup tab.
Click Disable all

Click Services tab.
Put checkmark in Hide all Microsoft services
Click Disable all.

Click OK.
Restart computer in Normal Mode.

NOTE. If you use different firewall, than Windows firewall, turn Windows firewall on, just for this test, since your regular firewall won't be running.
If you use Windows firewall, you're fine.thanks - but nothing changed - still stuck at the welcome screen - think I'm gonna have to re-install Vista . . . . . . Quote

After a couple of minutes the screen went black (not blue).   Nothing, but I can open task manager.
So, this happens in Normal Mode, right?

While in Safe Mode with Networking...

Solve : Is there a way I could remotely control a computer??

Answer»

My mother went to Tx and has trouble even using email.  At work, I know the tech guys do remote stuff because sometimes I will walk by a PC and and it looks like someones using it but no ones there.  The screen and menus are moving and there's typing.

I'm a novice with computers and I know there's remote assistance on my computer but-how could I connect to her in Tx.

What would be a first step?  If there is a way.  What program could I look at?  What info would I need from her or my computer?

Place your mouse on a blank space on the desktop. Click it to focus out of your browser. Now hit the F1 key. This brings you the windows help page.
Look up near the top RIGHT and see these words:

Invite a friend to connect to your computer with Remote Assistance

This works with Windows XP and other recent versions of Windows. First try it with a buddy and learn how it works.

You have evidently never had to help people perform tasks on a computer over the phone.Take a look at www.crossloop.com. It is a free download and very easy to use. I use it for my parents, 76 and 74 in FLORIDA, as well as my genius daughter in college in California. Mom would have to download and install it, but after that it is as easy as double clicking and calling you with the access code.

You don't have to create an account to use it.

That might be awesome.  Even the basic screen share.  Because we can talk on the phone but I will know and be able to guide her to the right place on the screen and tell her what to click and not click on!  It's not so much as I need control but to see what she sees.  It really works wonders. You can watch them or take over and show them how it is done. Glad you like it.Hey!  This is a good idea!  I finally got mom in Tx to install and use it.  I guided her through attaching photos to an email over the telephone.  This is the funny part.  After I told her I can see her screen she goes, "you can see the pictures,"  "do I still have to send them?"  Yes, still send them.  Team VIEWER is ANOTHER free popular remote desktop program.

http://www.teamviewer.com/index.aspxJust wondering, though... there is a way to record a computer's actions remotely? I meant, you tell your mom how it works but she forgets so then all you'd need to do is to tell her to review the video instructions. Quote from: 2x3i5x on June 09, 2010, 06:58:20 PM

I would think FRAPS, SnagIt, or CAMSTUDIO may help.  Not sure if these will choke while trying to record Remote Desktop activity...Of some options mentioned (Remote Desktop Access, CrossLoop, and TeamViewer) here for remote access, none of them provide for recording a user's activity on their PC desktop.  But, you can see what the other person is doing while you are connected to their computer.  At least, I know that's the case with TeamViewer and, as I recall, with the Remote Desktop Access.  I don't know whether that's true for CrossLoop; perhaps they can see what you're doing when connected to their computer but you can't see what they are doing.

TeamViewer is free for personal use; I've used it with my mother.

Solve : Stuck Constantly Zooming In/Out?

Answer»

Hi,

I have a Vista 32-bit with Core 2 DUO and Geforce 8600GT and 2 GB DDR2 RAM, although I'm not sure how important this is for my problem...

My PC had been working fine until a little while ago.  When I got on, I got onto Google Chrome (my main web browser) and everything automatically zoomed as far out as possible.  So I reset it to normal but it did the same thing.  I went to other tabs, made new tabs, and reopened the browser but it kept zooming out automatically whenever I would reset it.  So I go to the desktop, and all the icons automatically resized themselves to smallest possible, even when I reset them to their normal SIZES.  I then opened both IE and Firefox and they both actually automatically zoomed IN whenever I scrolled down.  I opened MICROSOFT Word and it zoomed out to 10% automatically and no matter what size I set it to it would keep going back out.  I have no idea what could be causing this but if you could find a solution that would be great. Thanks

Hey! I wonder if that could be the problem!
[/sarcasm]Since most browsers as well as the desktop use Control+Scrollwheel to zoom in/out it stands to reason that the "control" key problem might be related to the zoom issue.

Solve : Vista slow after switching users?

Answer»

Hi, every time someone uses their account on my vista for a long time(several hours), when i switch USERS to go into my account, the computer slows down. It takes about 30 seconds to switch users, and 10-15 seconds to login, while if nobody has been using the pc it takes about 5.(by "not using" i MEANT it just stayed on the pick user screen) This happens mostly when a user leaves the computer without getting out of their account, and after some time the computer locks the user account automatically, and after that it's slow for me. The SLOWNESS comntinues for some time, like 2-3 minutes, but can be so slow that it takes 20 secs to start IE. I have scanned for viruses, defragged, and used disk cleanup. Any tips to make it faster? Thanks.OK first off if someone leaves an account they should log out of it, not lock it as that means all there processes are still running.
It's always worth a restart if someone has been using the computer for 'hours' so you can clear the cache before starting a new session. REMEMBER a lot of your programmes are shared hence they get slower the more info you give them.

I WOULD say 'personally' restart after every 'user' change.

I may be wrong..

Solve : Impossibility to log on?

Answer»

I have 1 standard and 1 administrator account on my Vista-equiped pc.

The welcome screen hangs after i enter my administrator's password. Thus, i cant run anything requiring elevated permission.

i tried searching for solutions on the web and found some including trying to activate the built-in Administrator using cmd to ...create and delete accounts, but the latter wont work since i need administrator's permission.

Need help with this obviously ...What led up to this (what happened since the last successful logon - new hw, sw, virus, error, etc)?I accessed the properties of Microsoft Office folder and changed its security settings so i can only use it...

After that i wasn't able to access any Office applications. Each application tells me, "the application failed to intialize properly(0xc0150002). Click OK to terminate the application."

After that i used system restore to try and fix the problem. However, i wasn't able to log on to my only administrator account after the system restore.

It is impossible for me to log on to my only administrator account because the welcome screen doesn't go away.

Boot to SAFEMODE and make the appropiate changes to the permissions in Office...I have very basic knowledge about computers.

I wasnt't able to do anything while in safe mode since i need my only administrator's permission.

Everytime i enter the password, the welcome screen hangs even while in safe mode...

I used the repair my computer option and was able to log on with my administrator account.

After that, i used the CMD and was able to set a password for and activate my built-in Administrator.

I created accounts using the Administrator while i was still on the repair my computer.

When i restarted the PC to normal mode, neither the Administrator nor the newly created accounts existed.

Help is appreciatedIt is impossible for me to log on to my only administrator account using Windows normally because the welcome screen doesn't go away.

I wasn't able to do anything while in Safe Mode either since i need my only administrator's permission in Safe Mode yet.

I created accounts using the built-in Administrator while in Repair My Computer.

When i restarted the PC in Normal mode, neither the Administrator nor the newly created accounts existed.

Are there any procedures to get back an accessible administrator account on my NOTEBOOK ?
Just for future reference please don't bump your topic to get it to the top of the threads. Not necessary.

You can always join in your non-admin account and change passwords etc for admin there as long as you have the passwords, you should be able to make it work through the other account. Mulreay,
i wasn't doing what you mentioned and was only trying to give additional information.

Can you please elaborate steps of controling other accounts using my standard account as you said ?

Enter your basic account go into control panel found in the start menu, click on User Accounts and family safety and then go into  Add or Remove user accounts

Then you can either change your normal account to non-admin or work at changing the password to the Admin account.
P.s sorry if I offended you it just seemed you were bumping the topic. My bad and I apologise.  Mulreay,

My topic is Impossibility to log on and i explained in my discussion why. I can't access anything that requires administrator's permission.

Having reitirated that, it should be clear that i can't use your method...
OK you can't boot into Admin or any guest accounts?

Have you still got the Windows CD or did your computer come with a partition with the recovery included?
If you did not get a CD we can assume it came with a partition.

If you have a Windows Vista installation disc, you need to RESTART (boot) your computer using the installation disc. If you do not restart your computer from the disc, the option to repair your computer will not appear.

If you have a Windows Vista installation disc:

INSERT the installation disc.

Restart your computer.

Click the Start button , click the arrow next to the Lock button , and then click Restart.

If prompted, press any key to start Windows from the installation disc.

Note
If your computer is not configured to start from a CD or DVD, check the information that came with your computer. You may need to change your computer's BIOS settings.

Choose your language settings, and then click Next.

Click Repair your computer.
Select the operating system you want to repair, and then click Next.

On the System Recovery Options menu, click Startup Repair. Startup Repair might prompt you to make choices as it tries to fix the problem, and if necessary, it might restart your computer as it makes repairs.

If Startup Repair is a preinstalled recovery option on your computer:

Remove all floppy disks, CDs, and DVDs from your computer, and then restart your computer.

Click the Start button , click the arrow next to the Lock button , and then click Restart.

Do one of the following:

If your computer has a single operating system installed, press and hold the F8 key as your computer restarts. You need to press F8 before the Windows logo appears. If the Windows logo appears, you will need to try again by waiting until the Windows logon prompt appears, and then shutting down and restarting your computer.

If your computer has more than one operating system, use the arrow keys to highlight the operating system you want to repair, and then press and hold F8.

On the Advanced Boot Options screen, use the arrow keys to highlight Repair your computer, and then press ENTER. (If Repair your computer is not listed as an option, then your computer does not include Startup Repair as a preinstalled recovery option.)

Select a keyboard layout, and then click Next.

Select a user name and enter the password, and then click OK.

On the System Recovery Options menu, click Startup Repair. Startup Repair might prompt you to make choices as it tries to fix the problem and, if necessary, it might restart your computer as it makes repairs.

Solve : command line interface issues?

Answer»

How do I fix my Command Line Interface?  My computer has been really SLOW lately and it takes at least 2 minutes it feels LIKE to load a single page.  It just won't go fast anymore.  ALONG with the command line interface issue it also says Internet Explorer has stopped working.  I don't think or I hope there are no viruses in here.  I have done a DISK cleanup on my main drive and deleted browsing history.  Any help would be appreciated thanks.  I have an Acer Notebook 5100 series running Windows Vista Home Premium. Visit our Virus and Spyware section and follow the guide for posting your logs so we can rule that out 1st...

I'm not SURE what you mean exactly

I believe Patio was asking you what burning application (software program) you used to burn the repair disc. I expect he overlooked the PART where you wrote

I used Imgburn.

ImgBurn is a lightweight CD / DVD / HD DVD / Blu-ray burning APPLICATION.
