Solve : click on links on internet explorer does not work? |
Answer» I cannot open links unless I right click and open. I can't close im boxes on FB because clicking does not work I have run stinger and avg and I did disk cleanup I don't know why but this has been going on for a couple of weeks. Is the pop-up blocker on? Sometimes it prevents you from opening a link. Try going to Tools>Pop-Up blocker, and see if its on or off. If its on try turning it off. This HAPPENED to me, but i DONT know why you can't close boxes on facebook. Thats a bit odd for pop-up blocker.wait ... you USING internet explorer?Pop up blocker is turned off and yes I am using Internet Explorertry resetting internet explorer IE8 on Vista and WINDOWS 7 has a new security restriction that is turned on by default for ALL zones on the security tab. Not sure if it's the same with XPI tried Mulreay suggestions and finally got Java to run on my computer. I always get that Java is not installed on my computer. But, I check at Java.com and it aways says I have the latest version installed. And, whenever I would go to a certain tab in the Java menus internet explorer was not able to be checked-I could not put a check in the box but could do so for FireFox. Did Microsoft do this because of alot of security problems with Java?Yes they did. Glad you sorted it. Quote from: Mulreay on July 17, 2010, 07:59:38 PM Yes they did. Actually, no. It has nothing to do with Java. I actually just deleted my user profile and set up a new one everythings works good now but I don't know how to get my files that were kept in windows before I deleted the user profile. Solve : PDF files, cannot read or create them.? |
Answer» Whenever I either try and read a PDF file from a website or try to create one from within WORD, a message appears telling me that Acrobat 8.1.0 cannot be launched until a program from the Abobe suite is launched, such as PhotoShop. Uninstall all adobe products and start over.I hope you did not do this. Adobe Acrobat is not free; it's rather pricey software. And, if you uninstall it, you'll lose the ability to create PDF's unless you find other tools to do it with. Microsoft Office 2007 has the capability to Save As PDF; older version of Office do not have that feature. Still, I hate to lose Adobe Acrobat since it's the PREMIER PDF creation software. Adobe Reader is the free PDF reader. Let's be very clear here. We're talking about two different Adobe products. Again, Adobe Acrobat is a PDF creation program and is not free. Adobe Reader is just a PDF reader and is free. So, as far as I know, having both Adobe Acrobat and Adobe Reader installed should cause no problem, and they need not be the same version #. Quote from: Autumn on April 25, 2010, 06:17:52 AM I seem to have been able to create PDF files without having a subscription. (Maybe it was included on my laptop). My system is Vista. How does one get this pricey software without knowing how they got it? Apparently, you have a valid software licence since you updated the Acrobat software. But, are you referring to Adobe Acrobat or Adobe Reader? So, I have been able to create PDF documents from within WORD, because it is a tool of the version I have. (Why would I buy it then?). Anyway, I understand the roles of the two different programs now, soybean, but why have both stopped working? Simultaneously they both stopped working; I can no longer use the Adobe Reader to read PDF files, or the PDF creator option from within WORD. Any ideas? - I am stumped, having updated both programs and looked at the settings and so forth. Autumn Quote from: Autumn on April 27, 2010, 02:57:06 AM I have been creating PDF files of notes for my students and emailing them, for some time. I simply click on an icon on a toolbar when in WORD and the pages are printed electronically to a PDF document. This sounds like an icon added to Word by the installation of Acrobat, not a standard Word icon/feature. So, I'm guessing Acrobat was, indeed, the software that was converting your Word files to PDF. To use the PDF conversion feature built-in to Word 2007, select Save As, and then select PDF or XPS. At the next screen, it may have XPS shown as the save format. If so, click the drop down arrow and select PDF. Regarding the non-functioning of Adobe Reader in your computer, I suggest you uninstall Adobe Reader and reinstall it. You can download version 9.3 or 8.2 from http://get.adobe.com/reader/otherversions/. Alternatively, you could get Foxit Reader, a popular, light-weight (meaning much smaller download file size) PDF reader. Can read an create pdf files? Quote from: marvinengland on May 01, 2010, 09:46:09 AM Can read an create pdf files?Quote from: soybean on April 27, 2010, 08:02:51 AM This sounds like an icon added to Word by the installation of Acrobat, not a standard Word icon/feature. So, I'm guessing Acrobat was, indeed, the software that was converting your Word files to PDF. When you install Acrobat, it actually adds a whole new tab to Office 2007 programs, not just an icon. [recovering disk space - old attachment deleted by admin] Quote from: quaxo on May 01, 2010, 10:41:47 PM When you install Acrobat, it actually adds a whole new tab to Office 2007 programs, not just an icon. So, quaxo, do you think she has that Acrobat tab in her Office 2007 programs? If not, then what's your interpretation of this?: Quote from: Autumn on April 27, 2010, 02:57:06 AM I simply click on an icon on a toolbar when in WORD and the pages are printed electronically to a PDF document.Actually, I just kind of assumed it is 2007. I don't think the OP ever said. I haven't used pre-2007 versions of Office is so long, I can't REMEMBER if it installs the toolbar in those as well. I would assume, given the information provided so far, that the Acrobat installation is somehow corrupted. It's installation should be completely separate from Adobe Reader, and you don't need one to use the other. When you install Acrobat, it sets itself as the default reader over Adobe Reader. My suggestion: 1. Uninstall both Adobe Reader and Adobe Acrobat. 2. Reinstall Acrobat only. (Installing Reader is unnecessary if you have Acrobat.) Even if Acrobat was included with the laptop, there should be an installer for it somewhere. Make sure you locate its installer before you remove the program. It, and other bundled programs, can usually be installed from the recovery CD that came with the computer, from the restoration partition, or from a folder that's on drive C: (depending on the manufacturer). If you can't find the software in any of those locations, contact the laptop manufacturer and inquire as to how they expect it to be reinstalled.I sort of agree with quaxo to a degree, but I would first just uninstall reader, not acrobat, and see what happens. It sounds like Acrobat was preinstalled on your laptop (which is unusual, maybe it was a limited time trial) and you don't have any original disks. And like mentioned several times it is not a cheap program. Adobe programs seem to have a number of quirks and bugs, and one could be interfering with another. If reader was installed after acrobat then it's clear that reader has taken over quite a few functions of the full version. Additionally, it might even register objects with the same CLSID, in which case Office is trying to use reader as a Office add-in but it doesn't implement the correct Categories so it just ignores it (therefore the tab or whatever else the OP had with their version for saving as a PDF is gone). Of course that is pure conjecture. |

Solve : Webcams!? |
Answer» How do you connect with another computer so you can communicate through the webcams? Are there certain websites? How do you find the other private computer.Hello Doug, How do you connect with another computer so you can communicate through the webcams? Are there certain websites? How do you find the other private computer. You mean share camera views with one other PERSON, right? I have the impression you're not talking about streaming your webcam onto a web page. Am I right? To share camera views with one other person, I believe this is usually done using instant messaging (IM) software. The IM program I'm most familiar with is Yahoo! Messenger. But, I believe most or all IM programs support webcam viewing. You said it much better than me.. Another quality video streaming program is Skype. I use this quite frequently and have little to no problems at allwebcams, pah. back in my day, we didn't have webcams. we had to post each other hand drawn images of ourselves, and we had to DRAW with rusty nails, and we had to sit on broken glass. It was a simpler time. Anyway, as EVERYBODY says, an IM program is your best bet and also the easiest. |

Answer» I've got an HP Pavilion Media Center PC m8100n with Windows Vista. We've had it for several months now but a few days ago it suddenly just stopped recognizing any of the USB ports in both the front and the BACK. I have no idea what happened but I can't access any of my files in my external drive, flash drives, my printer, or HOOK up my iPod. It doesn't SAY that there are any problems with them when I go to my DEVICE MANAGER. Any suggestions on what I should do or what the problem is? Thanks!Try this: Go to Device Manager, remove all USB Root Hubs and reboot the PC. Windows will 'find' the USB hubs and re-install the drivers. |

Solve : Any FREE anti-virus software out there?? |
Answer» As for AVG, you guys can argue until blue, but I simply know the facts, because I've been working with COMPUTERS for over 20 years, and I was actually using AVG for many years until the version 8.0. Last time I cheeked spy ware is every were and it slows done your computerFirst of all, Spybot is NOT antivirus program, and it CAN NOT replace real AV program. Secondly, Spybot is rather over its best days. If you disagree, I'd like to know, how much experience you have with dealing with computer security issues.if you really wanted a paid antispyware software, you can get Webroot Spy Sweeper. But else for free, get the programs recommended here, namely Malwarebyte Antimalware. In any case, if you got AVAST, it's got an antispyware component to it I believe and there's also windows defender, which I see Microsoft constantly updating Please do not mix antispyware programs, like Malwarebytes with AV programs. The poster will get confused.Would that be a pobbile reason my pc is dragging lately? I have a brand new hard drive so I know space is not an issue. (I am not technical so go easy on me guys) THANKS, shelby_vn You need to start your own topic. Quote from: Broni on April 27, 2009, 09:35:07 PM Please do not mix antispyware programs, like Malwarebytes with AV programs. ok sorry, one thing at a time I guess. Get Avast or Avira installed on computer then we go from thereon. Firewall probably is second on the list, then third is MALWARE protection Quote from: Broni on April 28, 2009, 09:32:28 PM shelby_vn Holy Moly. I am so lost!!! I know you guys are all pc knowledgeable but remember...some of us (ME) are just regular people who only use the internet for simple things. (Email, web surfing, etc.) I think I removed AVG and I think I now have AVAST since I see the 'A' icon by my clock. Now what do I need? BRONI.........you awake?? I neeeeeeeed you. DENISEright click it and go to update and do both of them after one is done. That way it will have the latest defs for protection. Its so powerful that it even see's conflicer which was the major scare in April. It was supposeably a trojan and a KEYLOGGER. Takes personal info.mum you have avast , go to broni's post no 28 above and do a complete removal of avg do it 2 or 3 times , harryI think that its gone as she isnt haveing conflic's with it. Do what I have said tooooo.....MomNEEDShelp How is your computer doing with Avast installed, vs. AVG? I recommend, you get 3 more tools (you may have some of them already): - Download, and install CCleaner: http://www.ccleaner.com/download/builds. Get "Slim" version. Read CCleaner instruction here: http://www.jahewi.nl/ccleaner/ccleaner.html, and run CCleaner. Run it weekly. It'll clean your computer of temporary files, leftovers, and all kind of garbage - SUPERAntiSpyware Free Edition: http://www.superantispyware.com/download.html - Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (trial version is fully functionable): http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php The two above, are antispyware tools. Run them on occasion (monthly, or if your computer misbehave) You should be all good to go. Now, I'd like to make sure AVG is totally gone, so.... Download HijackThis: http://www.trendsecure.com/portal/en-US/tools/security_tools/hijackthis/download by clicking on Download HijackThis Installer Install, and run it. Post HijackTHis log. Do NOT attempt to fix anything! NOTE. If you're using Vista, right click on HijackThis, and click Run as Administrator |

Solve : Whats with the MS Nag screen?? |
Answer» Well that i cannot advise on...if you're not legit you need to get legit. Once infected, the virus registers itself as a new system driver service named "wgavn" and has the public display name of "Windows GENUINE Advantage Validation Notification." That's not what it says on that screen photo. Sounds like the recent (April 09) WGA Notification update to me. So what you are saying then is that if I dont reply and I have a pirated copy, eventually I will lesser and lesser performance from my machine to the point of standstill. And that if I have a legit copy and dont reply I will get lesser and lesser performance to the point of standstill. |

Solve : windows vista black screen? |
Answer» OKAY so a friend of mine has a laptop with vista (of COURSE). She's had it for two years, and she hasn't had many issues besides her fan acting funny (not sure if she means her cooling pad or the actual fan in the computer.) The last time she shut it down, she put it on hibernate, and when she tried to BRING it up, nothing happens. There's just a black screen though the computer is clearly on. The only real recent issue she had was with some computer trying to access hers, but that was resolved. Any ideas on how to fix this?Ok basics first please... has she turned the laptop LCD onto an external Monitor? On my laptop I can press Fn button and F4 to change from laptop screen to an external monitor. Is there anything at all on the screen? Does the screen glow which means brighter than black (dead)? Does the screen show anything at all? Do you get the normal start up sounds on the laptop you would expect inc the window's start up tune?well first off, I'm not completely sure how to hook it up to another monitor, and she isn't either, and as far as I can tell, she can hear everything working/lights come on and whatnot, but it's completely black (at first it was 'lit up' and black, but then it was completely dead. She didn't say anything about the start up tune, but as far as I can tell she doesn't get it.Ok sorry to confuse you. You don't need to have an external monitor to switch your laptop over to it.. you just press the right buttons and then your laptop thinks you have got one. Generally it will STILL show the screen on the laptop anyway but I was just testing the water. Have you got any backup disks? Can you use a friends monitor and link it up with a VGA lead just to see if it's the screen? There should be a 15 point port in the back that will accept a VGA lead. |

Solve : I bought a new Dell with McAfee on it? |
Answer» McAfee ran OK for about 2 weeks and now it has stopped updating and asks me to reinstall the system. Nothing I've done seems to work to get it to update the most recent files. Usually new computers only come with a trial of antivirus. Sounds like yours has expired. I dont like Mcafee anyways. Try either Avast! or Avira. Its better to go with avast! Its free, too. Download here: The system comes with 15 months free of McAfee. I also have a free subscription to McAfee through my company. I can go with something else, but the last time I did so the system crashed.Trust us. McAfee is next to worthless program.I'll try what is suggested, I just was going to go with what is available and free to me. I'm on the road right now so it will be a few days before I can give it a try.All free: - Avast! free antivirus: http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html - Avira free antivirus: http://www.free-av.com/en/download/index.html - free PC Tools Firewall Plus: http://www.pctools.com/firewall/ - free Comodo Internet Security (firewall + AV): http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com/ NOTE. During installation, Comodo will also allow you to install AV only, or firewall only, if you prefer to combine one Comodo product with some other product. If you decide to install Avast, or Avira, make sure, Windows firewall is turned on, or use PC Tools Firewall Plus. If you decide to install Comodo, make sure, Windows firewall is turned off. IMPORTANT! Make sure, you use only ONE antivirus, and ONE firewall. Quote Trust us. McAfee is next to worthless program. Some more information please. Worthless? Why? Quote from: Geek-9pm on May 04, 2009, 11:56:17 PM Some more information please. Because he said so...and so do I. Mcafee came with my new HP Mini. It was absolutely...... hmmm what's the word.....CRAP. Completely bogged down the system, and it wouldn't allow itself to be removed through conventional means and prevented other antivirus products from being installed on the computer. I had to use the removal tool to remove it.McAfee has also very low detecting RATE. |

Solve : Lost iTunes Music? |
Answer» I recently purchased a NEW Sony Vaio laptop. I successfully transferred over 2500 music files from my old laptop via USB cable. All was fine until the other day when I opened up iTunes and the library was empty. Using Vista's search feature, I looked for the files, but according to Vista they didn't exist. Then I click on "Computer" then the C drive, and there they were?! I dragged them all back over to iTunes and yesterday they disappeared again. My e-mails to Sony and Apple have failed to provide a solution. Any ideas? What Operating System? Vista? Then I click on "Computer" then the C drive, and there they were?! I dragged them all back over to iTunes and yesterday they disappeared again. My e-mails to Sony and Apple have failed to provide a solution. Any ideas? Are you trying to drag files on to Itunes instead of telling Itunes to add a file/folder to the library. In Itunes click on "File" then Click "Add Folder to Library" this should bring up a window that will let you select a folder to have all its contents added to your library. No this was a straight transfer from a previous laptop using a USB and a program called "Windows Easy Transfer". I just did that again and everything is back, but I'm afraid it might happen again. No one seems to have an answer. We don't know enough to give an answer.I think you should brush up on file management skills...unless that app is that crappy it should not happen...Hey, If You Bought The Music From iTunes, All You Do Is Click Login>LOGIN TO YOUR ACCOUNT> Then It Should Say Somthing LIKE "iTunes Found Purchased ITEMS Want To Import"? Solve : Can I get to DOS?? |
Answer» Helpmeh wrote "CMD is not emulated dos...DosBox is emulated Dos. MS-DOS is real Dos...CMD is not DOS. We don't define anything by listing what it is not. "CMD is not emulated Dos" It makes no difference to the user if the command is from "Real Dos" or the XP Windows Dos like commands. The distinction is not needed and does not help the user.aside from them wondering why they can use set /a, for switches, and so forth under Windows 3.1, DOS 6.2, Windows 95,98,98SE, and ME, but it works alright under NT/XP/Vista. has nothing to do with them being different since as you say they are all DOS. Except they aren't. DOS is an Operating System. CMD.EXE is not an operating system. if a user is adept enough to USE the command prompt then I'm not sure what they WON'T gain by knowing the difference. Also, any command can depend on DOS version and revision to work properly. just try set /a in DOS 6. Works in CMD, but not in command. THAT is the difference. the USER will be using commands. obviously it's best to know which commands will work and which won't work. by understanding the differences between pure DOS and the NT command interpreter, one saves themselves troubleshooting to figure out, for example, why there is no /L switch in DOS 6; or why they can, or shouldn't, use certain commands, such as subst and join. ignoring these differences, as you appear to profess does not gain the user anything but further confusion, a state you allege occurs when we state that pure DOS and the command interpreter are different. a Fact which nobody can refute. Well put BC and good on you... But if we're dealing with a BIOS password than all BET's are off. First wayward laptop of the Month Award goes to the OP... BC, Thanks BC for taking time to explain the difference between a Disk Operating System and a Command Interpreter. However, I'm still confused; I thought MS DOS had a command Interpreter called command.com? _______________________________________ _______ The following is a related problem for me: Can we return to windows from cmd.exe with an exit command? Can we return to windows from command.com with an exit command? p.s I understand command.com is LOADED on XP to help run old MS DOS programs? C:\WINDOWS\system32\command.com Quote from: billrich on May 02, 2009, 08:40:15 PM Can we return to windows from cmd.exe with an exit command? 1. Yes 2. Yes 3. Yes but it's not as good as MS-DOS, or a DOS EMU... 4. Or just command.com Quote from: billrich on May 02, 2009, 08:40:15 PM BC, Sigh. MS-DOS has a command interpreter. Command.com. command.com is the MS-DOS Command interpreter cmd.exe s the Windows NT Command interpreter. Guess what! Linux has a Command interpreter too! So I guess it doesn't matter wether the user is using command.com, cmd.exe, or a linux terminal. why would they need to know? Oh wait- they would! commands are different! Hmm, sounds similar. While cmd tries to remain compatible with the QUIRKS of command.com it is still a 32-bit program. It adds new things that DOS 6 and other implementations of command.com simply cannot handle. Another important distinction is the replacement of deltree with rmdir /s, as well as the ability to use the asterisk to change directories without typing out the full folder name. This doesn't work in Pure DOS. Quote The following is a related problem for me: we're not talking about command.com and cmd.exe both running on an XP system. command.com on an NT/XP system is actually a stub loader for cmd.exe that disables certain extensions such as the use of long filenames. Either way, I was referring to the pure command.com as found on windows ME and prior systems. additionally, one might add that "exit" will ALWAYS return you to windows from a command prompt- exit in command.com will not return to windows if windows isn't running. (this distinction obviously created because cmd.exe cannot run at all without a 32-bit windows subsystem running, as created by windows during boot. MS-DOS is a operating system. is HAS a command interpreter called command.com. that is completely irrelevant since the original PROPOSITION was that the fact that certain features don't work in pure DOS was not worth mentioning. They are. the changes introduced in the NT command interpreter are vast and a LOT of batch files use the new functionality. trying to run these batch files in DOS 6, windows 95, windows 98, etc will fail because such extensions do not exist in those versions. going back now to differences on a single OS, windows XP, command.com cannot change to directory names with spaces that are also longer then 8 characters. Since this can easily affect any batch file dealing with files or folders, I don't see such a difference as moot or irelevant. Especially since a 5 page thread exists here because of this very issue- the fact that the OP was running command.com as opposed to cmd.exe.And Billrich, sorry for my correction |

Solve : Blue Screens? |

Answer» I have had 4 BSODs in an hour whilst trying to do an AV scan (Kasp.) I hope the sreenshot will enable you to point me in the right direction. This is poss conected to a previous post last week (although in 'Hardware') So now I have a spare good 250gb drive! Unless I am missing something here, what you have is a 250GB drive that has a red flag fluttering over its reliability, if Seatools had to fix 47 errors on it. Salmon Trout, Thank you for your input. Are you saying this HDD is bad? It is only 18mths or so old, so is still under warranty. As Seatools now says it is 'Healthy' would they reject an RMA? I am now using it as a second drive (Local Disk E) for backup, with no further problems. Your views please. AlexmaWell, other people's views may differ, but personally if that happened to me I would be make a warranty claim. 4 BSODs and 47 repaired errors would stop me trusting that drive. |

Solve : reinstalling w7 frm backup image? |
Answer» hi i had created windowsimge backup in a driv on my pc, then due to a virs had to format c drive, though i have xp now but how do i get w7 back from the imgebackupDepends on the imaging software you used. In most cases you would boot to the recovery cd created with the imaging software, navigate to the backup IMAGE in the "restore" option of that sofware, and restore it.i didnt use a software for that, i did it by using w7's basic facility of creating backup, it is saved on my hard drive spacing more than 6 gb, You will need a Windows 7 install disk or a repair disk. If you don't have an install disk or a repair disk, you will need to make one. what shud i do with the image backup saved in my harddrive Do whatever you want to do with it. It's yours. Whatever you THINK will make you happy, do that. Quote from: alchemist on July 19, 2012, 01:14:58 AM what shud i do with the image backup saved in my harddrive You can legally buy a Windows 7 recovery disk image for $9.75 from Neosmart, and burn it and use that to boot the computer and then restore the image that you previously saved, or you can borrow a Windows 7 install disk and legally boot to the recovery environment and do the same THING. Check that you have the right version (32 or 64 bit) JJ3000 already told you this, more or less. Read his post. Hi alchemist Did you have any success yet. I can help you but i would need some info. How did you put XP back on. Was this from a hidden restore partition on your HD (ie LIKE Dell, HP etc have) or did you use a cd/dvd and format the HD clean. So to help you i would would need some answers to better help you. Manufacture of PC and how you re-installed XP etc. Did you make the restore CD/DVD when you saved the W7 image on your hard drive. Please let me know so i can help you. Since you didn't create the system repair disc when you were told to during the Image Backup you can still easily create one if you can just find someone with a Windows 7 computer. But I bet since you didn't have an install disc the System Recovery boot was probably sitting on a small hidden partition that you could access during bootup. I really hate it when I see people selling the system recovery discs online because they are charging way too much for something that most people can make themselves for the price of a CD. People did that on ebay years ago when Windows 98 came out as well. They would sell simple floppy discs as Windows boot disc and people would buy the stuff when you could easily make it yourself. Microsoft has forced websites to take down the free download of the ISO image of the disc yet you still see people selling it on eBay and Amazon. apologies for the late response, hartbeatmr i installed xp by using a boot cd(formatting only c drive) and i got the pc assembled , it says Intel core i3 CPU 540 3.07GHz 3.06gGHz in the processor tab , not sure if this infor is enough , and certainly i didnt make the restore cd when i created the backupimage(reason for all the troubles :-)) Squashman , thanks for the valuable information, one question though , wud it be okay if i use somebodyelse's computer to make w7's recovery disc and then use it on my pc to get w7 back on, becuz as far as i know, u cant have same version of w7 running on two pcs , they wud ask for the key wudn't they? pls answer, p.s. , this website is of great help Quote from: alchemist on July 25, 2012, 06:17:50 AM wud it be okay if i use somebodyelse's computer to make w7's recovery disc Yes. If you will go back and read my post, I mention that. Let me clear it up for you. You can use ANY computer running windows 7 to create a system repair disk. It doesn't matter if it's Ultimate, Professional, or Home edition. ANY of those can create a Windows 7 system repair disk. Quote from: JJ 3000 on July 17, 2012, 09:27:41 AM If the computer you're repairing is 32 bit Windows 7 you will have to create the disk from a computer running 32 bit Windows 7, if it is 64 bit you will have to create a the disk from a computer running 64 bit windows 7. You cannot use a 32 bit installation to create a disk that will repair 64 bit windows and vice versa. Let me state again: You can use any computer that has windows 7 to create that disk. This is not an install disk, it only has the system repair options that are part of the full install disk. It's just a repair disk. Refer to my post above for instructions on making the disk. Good evening alchemist and welcome back to CH OK all the nice folks here are 100% correct about making the "Windows 7 repair disk" Hopefully this will make since to you (and I am not trying to be a wise guy) . On your PC do you have (1) harddrive with (1) partition? or do you have (2) harddrives etc. This may give you an idea of what I mean as a partitioned harddrive if you have (2) physical harddrives in your PC will look something like this I know you bought this PC but is it a desktop or a laptop the reason I am asking is related to the items below. If it is a laptop more than likely you only have (1) harddrive but if you have a desktop you can and may have (2) or more harddrives. If you have a desktop please shut down the PC (unplug ac cord) and open the case and look inside. The confusing part to this is (just in-case you don't know) you can have a "C" drive and say a "D" drive and they maybe (1) psychical harddrive split into (2) partitions if you are not sure open the case and look inside if this is a laptop you can't do this . The reason for this is that if you have (1) harddrive with (1) partition and you formatted and installed windows xp onto this you may not have the "windows 7 image" any more. But if the "windows 7 image" was saved onto another partition or (2nd) harddrive then if you follow the instructions from "jj3000" you can have windows 7 restored back onto your pc once again. But if I am understanding you correct you had XP, then installed Windows 7 and then at some point you made the "windows back up Image" which is good but if you saved that "windows image" to your only harddrive / partition" it very well may be gone. Hopefully this helps you some more, please come back and let us know how things are going. Mike PS just like "jj3000" said if you had windows 7 32 bit on your computer the repair disk must be made on windows 7 32 bit PC (even if the pc you are making the disk from is not your PC that's fine. But if you had Windows 7 64 bit the disk must be made from a windows 7 64 bit PC (even knowing the disk being made is not from your PC that's fine it is just a repair disk) But here is the bad again just so you know if that windows 7 image you saved was saved on your only harddrive / partition & from formatting the hardrive you will need your original windows 7 disk and COA (25 digit key) to install windows 7 again. hello again and good evening nice folks!:-) to answer your question Hartbeatmr , my pc is a desktop and i only have one harddisk currently, i have two slots of harddisk as shown in the image, and previously I had two harddisks in them, later i removed one of them as it didnt wrk for me, it was only 80 GB, so i rather unplugged it , and now with only one harddisk that is partitioned into 3harddrives , C D and E , and when i had w7 i saved the imagebackup in the drive E, though it gave me a sortof warning , "that the destination whr u r saving the backup is on the same physical disk, frm whr the backup is being created, " , but i overlooked it considering the fact that , when i had to reinstall another OS w7 or xp, it's only the c drive that gets affected, the rest of the drives remain as they are , so when i installed xp , the backup is still saved in the drive E i can see, so now i am planning to follow the your instructions jj3000, lets ask a friend who can let me make a repair disc, i know it's very easy for me , :-) regards, |

Solve : Win 7 log on issue? |

Answer» Greetings all, if it died from a virus fine. Hard drives don't "die from viruses". They aren't alive. A computer virus is a piece of malicious code (software) that disrupts or alters other software (operating system, settings, programs). Quote If it was due to internal mechanical failure it really irks me to think that as long as WD has been making hard drives, a 2yr life expectancy for a modern 1TB Hard Drive is just considered acceptable ? It happens. It is not considered acceptable. You were unlucky. By "died" I meant failed due to corrupted files, but thanks ! - I was going to give the new hard drive vitamins so that it wouldn't get sick, now I can save that money. Quote from: glathem40 on March 06, 2012, 07:06:02 PM By "died" I meant failed due to corrupted files, but thanks ! - I was going to give the new hard drive vitamins so that it wouldn't get sick, now I can save that money. I know you meant that, and that's why I wrote what I did, but it seems I made it too jokey and you failed to understand. You don't seem to understand that hard drives cannot, and do not, "fail" permanently because of a virus or "corrupted files". An installation of Windows or one or more software applications or data files might become unusable because of a virus, or user error, or file system damage, but unless the hard drive is actually failing (or has failed) mechanically you can just format it and use it again. I posted in this thread again for 2 reasons. The first - I want to thank you Salmon Trout in your persistence in making your point. I had a hard drive failure on another computer yrs ago and received S.M.A.R.T. warnings that the drive was failing before any operational problems appeared. Though I had read that, if your drive became so unrecoverably infected one could reformat and install an os, I have never been through the process myself (There is a difference between reading about wrestling a bear and wrestling a bear). I went back and read Transfusions first link and where it stated [Bad sectors are areas of the hard drive that do not maintain data integrity. They are automatically masked by the operating system and thus hard to identify]. ALSO where he stated [Looking at your first post... a "major crash" followed by data corruption to the point where you can't load your Windows account signaled the threat of a Hard Drive failure.] I now have a better understanding of what a hard drive failure may look like. 2nd reason - I have most of my critical data (pictures, documents) backed up on an external drive. I have ordered a Win 7 recovery disc set from HP and a new HD on the way. The main bit of data on the old drive that I am concerned about is a program (Sony Vegas Pro video editing) that I had purchased and downloaded on that drive. (my daughter lives for creating, editing videos). If I were able to access the old drive. is it possible to retrieve and install a program such as that. or should I wait until I have the computer up and running again and contact the company for help ? Thx to all at CH. Quote from: glathem40 on March 11, 2012, 12:58:12 AM The main bit of data on the old drive that I am concerned about is a program (Sony Vegas Pro video editing) that I had purchased and downloaded on that drive. (my daughter lives for creating, editing videos). If I were able to access the old drive. is it possible to retrieve and install a program such as that. or should I wait until I have the computer up and running again and contact the company for help ? If you replace the hard drive with a new one, and use an HP recovery disk or a Microsoft Windows install disk to get an operating system on it, you would have to re-install Vegas Pro from scratch. This applies to most if not all software packages. You cannot just transfer the files from an existing installation. If you obtained Vegas Pro by downloading a 30 day trial version and paying to unlock it, then download it again, and refer to the email you got from Sony for the unlocking code. So I finally got a new HD (seagate 1Tb). BIOS recognizes it. Installed revovery disc 1. "loading widows" with the bar along the bottom ran for about 10 min then windows boot manager error 0xc00000e9 - "This error can be caused by unplugging removable storage or by faulty hardware such as HD or CD ROM. I ran a SMART status check from BIOS and got "HD failure imminent" (is this a valid test on an unformatted drive ?). This same result is what ultimately lead me to believe the original hard drive failed. |

Solve : Windws 7 preexcisting OS reinstalling.? |

Answer» So a long time ago, i had Windows XP and i wanted Windows 7 and i bought an Windows 7 Preexcisting OS CD. http://lmgtfy.com/?q=upgrade+windows+xp+to+windows+7 Your link is insignificant...i didn't say it can't be done...i stated there is no upgrade path which basically means an XP Key means nothing to Win7A Google search shows this for the upgrade from windows XP Quote Windows 7 Home Premium But the same package also is sold for about $120. Without reference to XP. It is an Upgrade, because Windows 7 if better that XP. Now... what was the OPs question? Quote from: Geek-9pm on July 20, 2012, 09:09:03 PM A Google search shows this for the upgrade from windows XPExactly what do you mean by "upgrade"? As patio said: Quote from: patio on July 20, 2012, 09:34:25 AM There is no upgrade path from XP to Win7 so something is fishy here...So, I think "upgrade" needs to be clearly DEFINED here if you're saying there is an upgrade path. Quote from: soybean on July 21, 2012, 08:57:44 AM Exactly what do you mean by "upgrade"? I think you're causing some confusion here unless you clarify. As patio said:So, I think "upgrade" needs to be clearly defined here if you're saying there is an upgrade path.I believe what patio meant to say is there is no DIRECT upgrade path from XP to W7 Quote from: Allan on July 21, 2012, 11:07:59 AM I believe what patio meant to say is there is no DIRECT upgrade path from XP to W7 I think people may be getting caught between two slightly different meanings of the word 'upgrade'. In ordinary English, to upgrade means to choose to improve something or bring it up to date. You might upgrade a cable TV package to a level with more channels, or an airline ticket from tourist to business, or upgrade the comfort level of a hotel room you have booked, or you might decide to upgrade from a 14 inch CRT to a 42 inch plasma TV. Or indeed to replace an old version of software with a newer one, or go from a free version to a premium one. Very often the software supplier will make a new version cheaper or free for owners of previous versions. With operating systems this may involve nuking the earlier version and completely replacing it with the new one, or sometimes (and here comes the other meaning of the word) with some Microsoft Windows versions, it is possible to transform an installation of an earlier or lower level version to a later or higher level one, leaving some or all installed programs, user files (documents, pictures, music, whatever) and some settings and stuff (e.g. bookmarks) intact. If you pay the lower price for an upgrade license the installer wants to see proof that you own the 'qualifying product'. Either it is there on the hard drive or it will ask to see the original OS CD or DVD. Microsoft does not make this type of 'upgrade' AVAILABLE to users of every version. There is a list of supported (and unsupported) upgrades with Windows 7 as the target here: http://technet.microsoft.com/library/dd772579.aspx If an upgrade of this type is supported, there is said to be an 'upgrade path' in existence. For example there are paths from Vista Business to Windows 7 Professional, Enterprise or Ultimate, and from Vista Enterprise to Windows 7 Enterprise (only). There is no 'upgrade path' - using the Microsoft meaning - to any version of Windows 7 from any version of Windows XP. Of course that does not mean you can't put Windows 7 on a PC that is already running Windows XP. It just means that you can't buy a cheaper W7 license and keep all your installed apps in place. Hence people's curiosity about the "preexcisting OS disk". (I wonder if it was titled thus?) There is an Easy Transfer Wizard on the Windows 7 DVD that can look for non-program data in your old XP installation and shove the stuff you choose to keep into a .MIG file on an external hard drive so you can get at it after the Windows 7 installation is complete. Or you can do it manually first. I do feel that using LMGTFY links should be done very sparingly; it can so easily seem like annoying sarcasm and a put-down, and is hardly likely to encourage a flood of help.Wooow some people got way to offtopic!! there is no upgrade from xp to windows 7? i had windows XP professional and now windows 7 professional USING the preexcisting OS CD. In fact it is part of the fact that they are stamped that it would be so expensive The logistical implications would be excessive. Currently, the keys are generated using some undocumented (for good reason) algorithm, probably involving encryption and base64 or base-32 or something to that accord. Entering a key it merely ensures it is valid by "reversing" it in a sense. Actually, one could use the same logic for phones. "Phone numbers are just a big annoyance. You would think phone companies would just burn the phone number into the BOTTOM of the phone". Quote from: Salmon Trout on July 24, 2012, 12:14:36 PM Have you thought what would do to the cost of producing the disks?Yes, less than the hologram they print on it. Quote from: Geek-9pm Yes, less than the hologram they print on it. No. It would probably double or even triple the costs involved. Each disc is not "burned". They are duplicated via disc stamping. having different information on each disc would require the creation of a new stamp master for each disc. Either that, or they would have to manually burn every single copy using a DVD-writer, which would be both silly and uneconomical. The holograms are all the same on every single disc. The cost per unit price decreases as more duplicates are made, because you only make the original once, and the only additional cost is for materials, which are cheap, particularly when purchased in bulk. Your suggestion would mean the elimination of this built in reduction of per-unit cost of production. Solve : Font Settings Help? |

Answer» I bought my laptop off a FRIEND and everything is fine but for some reason on some text boxes the default font is Impact, too small and hurts my eyes to read. Here is a screenshot of what I'm talking about. I have no idea how to change it? I've tried changing themes, I even tried changing it the 'regedit' way I found online. Wondered if any of you guys would know? PS. I use Google CHROME as a browser and have tried changing the fonts via advanced settings in that. Graphics Properties opens up Intel(R) Graphics and Media Control Panel and I can't figure out how to change it there. If this is Windows 7, when you right click the desktop you should get a menu which contains an item "Personalize". If you click this you should get a window titled "Personalization". At the bottom is a row of icons, one of which will be titled "Window Color". If you click this you get a window titled "Window Color and Appearance". The lowest item is a clickable link "Advanced appearance settings...". Click this and you finally get this dialog in which you can access most of the visual elements of the Windows GUI. The "Item" dropdown is the key. The other way to get to the Personalization dialog is the Display control panel applet - in the Display dialog look for "See also" in the bottom left corner, under that is a link name "Personalization". I have Windows Vista, I forgot to mention sorry. When I click Personalisation, this is what I find. I cannot seem to find "Item" in the dropdown... If the screenshot is too small just click it and then view it larger on imgbucket sorry for the hassle. I'm in a rush Quote from: Smorement on August 10, 2012, 03:34:40 AM I cannot seem to find "Item" in the dropdown... Item: is the LABEL of the dropdown. It contains items. You can alter the settings of these items. You can see the names of the items in the list that drops down. (This is why it is called a "drop-down".) Oh yeah haha. I'm so stupid. All the one's that I can change are set to TAHOMA. Yet the text is still Impact in some places... :S Quote from: Smorement on August 11, 2012, 11:45:05 AM Oh yeah haha. I'm so stupid. Solve : Briefcase Not Syncing, Appears as 'File Folder'? |
Answer» Win 7, Dell laptop This kind of problem was considered on a MS forum.+1 here But with in Windows 7 I don't know if you are aware of this windows 7 has a back up feature you can do folders that MS thinks you want or the ones you choose. This link may help you just in-case you don't know of it http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/products/features/backup-and-restore I've had success with Briefcase in 7, as LONG as the case itself stays below a certain size limit. (Don't know what that is, exactly - it has worked for 1-ish GB folders, it doesn't with 20GB itunes libraries...) Sorry for the late follow up. I'm only home (where my Briefcase backs up) on weekends. Two reboots (not ONE, two), and everything's back to normal. So, UM, thanks! Must have been an ID-ten-T error. (And, Geek, for better or worse, I TEND to look for "systemic" help here... Access and Word help, I go to MS' boards, and Excel I go to MrExcel... But if Windows or hardware CONFOUNDS me...It's straight to CH!) |

Solve : HP 610C "error" in Vista? |
Answer» Connect old HP 610C PRINTER via the usb and parallel cable to notebook running on Windows Vista. The spool file shows the PRINTING as "error". Connect old HP 610C printer via the usb and parallel cable to notebook running on Windows Vista. Did you connect (EDIT: both cables) at the same time? If so, no, no, no. Use USB and look here: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c00808543&lc=en&cc=us&lang=en&dlc=en&product=58708 Good luck! That printer does not have Vista drivers... Sorry. Quote from: patio on July 13, 2008, 09:36:40 AM That printer does not have Vista drivers... The referenced HP link in my post says that Vista contains drivers for the 610C which provide basic functionality - is that incorrect? The reference hp website indicates 610C printer driver is provided in Vista. When manual installing the printer - able to install the printer but when printing the spool file indicates "error" FOLLOWED the reference hp PROCEDURE of (1) switch on the printer (2) connect the printer parallel port and (3) connect the usb to the notebook. Then the message indicates something like unrecognised or not compatible usb. Lession learned - if buying usb with printer parallel port cable for vista's use - make sure it is vista certified (certified upto xp may not work with vista). Thanks for all the suggestions. Quote from: Hu on July 13, 2008, 06:27:08 PM Followed the reference hp procedure of (1) switch on the printer (2) connect the printer parallel port and (3) connect the usb to the notebook. Then the message indicates something like unrecognised or not compatible usb. I am confused - where does HP say to connect the USB cable AND the parallel cable? This is what HP says in the link that I provided: "The driver solution for this product is included in your Windows Vista operating system and is already on your computer. There is no need to download anything . Follow the steps below to quickly and easily get your product working with Windows Vista. Installing the printer driver 1. Verify that the printer is turned on. 2. Connect the Universal Serial Bus (USB) cable to the printer and to the computer. 3. A Your devices are ready to use window might display on the screen. If the window displays and does not close automatically, close the window. 4. Print a test page to verify that the printer is working correctly." Solve : Scanner message "fail load"? |
Answer» I have a Mustek 600 III EP Plus PARALLEL port scanner that I am trying to install to a Dell Optiplex GX260. The scanner was working fine on my "old" computer. I have researched and read several suggestions; none of which helped. I have checked and ECP mode is enabled. When I try to use it, I get the MESSAGE " fail load". When I go to scanners and cameras, it does not appear there. It shows no scanner at all. I have REINSTALLED it 3 times. I hope some one has the solution to this. I also downloaded a new driver. What OS are you running? Have you got the right drivers for that OS? Is it the same OS as on the old computer? In particular, have you moved from Windows 98/ME to Windows 2000/XP/Vista? parallel port scanners are pretty old nowadays, I had an Agfa one about 7 years ago, it never worked properly with XP, kept vanishing. I think you may have to bite the bullet and get a modern scanner. That Mustek was a new model some time around 1996! |

Click the Display Tab and Test your DirectX features.its windows vista home premium Quote from: Carbon Dudeoxide on September 07, 2008, 02:58:03 AM Quotetried going through the compatibility settings, the game originally used EITHER windows 95 or nt 4.0. it didn't seem to make any difference, tried opening it as a admin, still no difference, running the game from dos, changing the resalution, window size, and checked the dxdiag,I found this on Google:ive tried everything i can think ofWhat have you done? right click on your desktop to get into your display properties click on the settings tab, and click on the advanced button in the NEW window, click on the TROUBLESHOOT tab now, move the slider for Hardware Acceleration down, one setting click all the Ok buttons to get out of it, then try running diablo... if it doesn't work, go back in and take the slider down another notch, keep doing that until it works.... Solve : I need help BAD!!!!? |
Answer» First off, I'm not great with computers. Here's my problem: I thought it would be a great idea to download windows vista from limewire. Turns out it was just a trial version that is now over and asking me to activate it. I no longer have a running operating system and can only access the internet. I need to find a way to get my XP back, which I think is still somewhere in there trying to get out! I FOUND a way to get to my files by right clicking on a picture and clicking on "go to my pictures". How can i get rid of this stupid vista trial and back to my xp??? Please help me. I"m pretty desperate. This is sort of a gray area because what you tried to do is illegal, but you didn't succeeded and you are INSTEAD left with a useless OS. So, with that in mind, I will at the very least, POINT you in the right direction... |

Solve : Computer shutting down when playing a game? |
Answer» My computer is shutting down by its self when I start up a game. I can play it for about 5 mins or so then the computer shuts down. I know it is not a over heating issue cause I can have the computer idle for hours. I know it is not a over heating issue cause I can have the computer idle for hours. there is a huge difference in temperature between running idle and running under load. download coretemp found here and download prime95 found here. coretemp will let you know your CPU temp and prime 95 will place your CPU under a huge load. i dont know how well the 64bit version of prime 95 handles, i have never used it, so you may need to do some reading to find out how to test all 4 of your cores at the same time. please post back with your idle temps and with your load temps.Well I don't know if it good or bad. The temp would get up to 125c on all 4 cpu's, then after awhile of high activity the computer shut off. I checked all fans they are all working. I have 1 cpu fan on the processor one next to it blowing on it. then I have 2 other extra fans to blow air through the case. I have a 800W power supply. So in all with the fans I have is about 8 fans blowing in the case. (video card, power supply, 2 CPU fans, and 2 extra fans) I went in to BIOS to see the percentage of the fan speed they are at 100%. What is the next step? Quote The temp would get up to 125c on all 4 cpu's,If this were true they would have melted by now... Please re-read Homer's Post and follow the steps and links outlined... Quote The temp would get up to 125c on all 4 cpu's are you sure?? as patio has stated that temperature is extremely high. is your CPU overclocked? please give us more info... Quote please post back with your idle temps and with your load temps. Quote So in all with the fans I have is about 8 fans blowing in the case.Quote (video card, power supply, 2 CPU fans, and 2 extra fans) it sounds like you have six. how many fans do you have and are they all placed correctly? do they promote linear airflow or do they impede it? At idle and they stay consistant. TJ. Max 105 c Core #0 77 Core #1 77 Core #2 73 Core #3 73 When I ran Prime95 all CPU's fluctuated between 73 c to 125 c. I have not over clocked my CPu unless it was preset that way. I will check to see if it is. Fan 1: I have a fan in the front bottom of my computer that flows to the front out Fan 2: In Back that Flows out from back. Fan 3: This fan sits at the bottom of the CPU pushing air upwards CPU Fan 1: On top of CPU those temperatures are extremely high. i recommend checking the CPU heatsink fan to MAKE sure it is securely attached to the motherboard. did you use thermal paste when you installed the heatsink? fan 1 should be pushing air towards the back of the case. fan 3 should be removed. Well I was able to get the temp down 1 66 c 2 66 c 3 63 c 4 63 c Thats for Idle With Prime95 I seen temps as high as 77 c thats all. What is the goal temp? What else do I need to do? those temperatures seem a little more bearable. i am not familiar with q9300 temps, but the main rule of thumb is to get the temps as low as possible. if you correctly mounted the heatsink and used the correct amount of thermal paste and you are still getting high temps, the only thing left to do would be to purchase an aftermarket CPU heatsink. just an added note, when you place fans inside of the case remember to try and keep the airflow linear. the front and side (if applicable) fan(s) should be the intakes and the rear and top (if applicable) fan(s) should be the exhaust. try and setup that third fan in a manner that aids in keeping the air moving in one direction. |
