Solve : Out of Range Display? |
Answer» My friend's computer displays an "out of RANGE" message on the monitor. It is an Envision LCD with a native resolution of The shop repaired the computer and we now have it at home. Unfortunately, the same problem exists.Did you get a refund?I would TAKE it back to the guy that "fixed" it, and tell him that it is still messed up and demand a refund or a proper fix. Also where a CRT monitor is designed to use several resolutions, an LCD monitor uses only one resolution, called the native resolution, which is the ACTUAL (and fixed) number of pixels built into the monitor. If you want to use a different resolution other than the native resolution select one that uses the same ratio of horizontal pixels to vertical pixels that the native resolution uses.Could be a lot of things ie. corrupted graphics driver that needs reinstalling, etc. Whatever it is you need to take it back to repair shop. You have a warranty and most warranties become void if you try to repair.agreed Is it possible the "refresh" rate is out of range. Boot to Safe Mode, check it, reset it if necessary, and reboot to normal mode. Thanks to those who offered some help on my question. The problem TURNED out to be a 12 ft. VGA extension cable. Removing this cable and connecting the monitor to the computer with the original cable solved the problem.Nice |

Solve : vista login password forgotten? |
Answer» I am in Montreal my daughter is in the UK. She has a Dell Inspiron 1720 laptop and has RECENTLY CHANGED her login password and has now forgotten it! She is in the middle of her University exams and desperate to access her word files. My first time user of this type of service and I would appreciate any help.Hi; there is at least one post a day about forgotten pass words. So far I have not seen anyone try to help with passwords. I am sure yours is legit and you could probably contact Dell and solve the PROBLEM. Good luck. Thanks, she solved it by downloading a commercial programme: it worked like a dream. That's great, I am glad it worked out for you. Yeah, sorry we couldn't be of more help. Typically, none of the MEMBERS will help with this regardless of the STORY. No way to tell who we're helping get back into their own computers and who we're helping to get into someone else's computer. Glad you got it sorted out anyway. |

Solve : Need help downloading antivirus in Windows Vista? |
Answer» I have an eMachines T3616 desktop PC w/ AMD Sempron processor 3600+ that runs Windows Vista Home Basic OS. Lately I have been having problems booting, but then my PC will start as NORMAL, as if nothing has happened. Today I noticed Windows Security Center DETECTED NO anitvirus software. So I began to download AVG Anti-virus Free Edition. On dial-up, it took nearly two hours. Upon completion a message popped onscreen saying the downloaded file may be corrupt and I should reinstall a clean copy. When I attempted to do so and close the window, another message said that a cord was not connected to the local port and that I need to fix that. Should I try a second download of a clean, fresh copy of AVG? What is going on? Help!! Thank you. AVG download is over 34MB. It won't go as an attachment. Why won't your friend burn it for you on a CD? tell your friend to use yousendit.com or to send you the file. He simply download program, upload it to yousendit.com, (and follow any other instructions like entering your email address and whatnot) and you will get a link to download it. Now hopefully it works for you the second time around. But if your friend has a cd burner and can burn the file to a cd, he should to save you some time and you might also ask your friend with the dsl to download other programs you want that are kind of big and burn it to the cd to save you some more time. To Broni and mcxeb52... My friend and I would need to learn how to burn to a CD because we've never done that before. If the AVG download file is too large to send as an attachment we may need to download with my dial-up connection again. It will take far longer but we seem to have no other choice. Unless someone can give us isome good CD burning instructions. Any other advice? I thank you both for your time and patience with me. jandal Burning CD with XP is EASY: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/306524Broni... You said the AVG download file is too large to send as an attachment. What my friend plans to do is download the AVG file on her computer using her DSL connection, then email the AVG installer file as an attachment to my computer with the dial-up connection. Then we'll open and install AVG on my computer. Don't you think this will work? I want to be certain that you're not saying the AVG installer file is too large to send as an attachment. Sorry if I'm such a dunce but I am learning. Thank you and please let me know what you think, Broni. jandal I just checked, and their newest version 8.0 is 45MB in size, and I don't see any installer only download Quote from: jandal on April 24, 2008, 11:36:23 AM Broni... It will work but it's the same as you personally downloading it onto your own computer. Even if she sent you the file as an attachment or something like that, you'd still have to download it to your computer using the dial up which makes no difference than just downloading from your dial up in the first place. Quote It will workIt won't. I'm not aware of any ISP allowing 45MB attachments. Quote Then we'll open and install AVG on my computer. Don't you think this will work? I meant this will work but jandal, the avg installer file IS DEFINITELY TOO LARGE to send as an attachment thru standard email so just ask your friend, to go to www.yousendit.com, follow the directions on the website to send you the file and you receive it that way. OR download the file yourself. You are still going to have to wait the 2 or so hours AFTER she send you the file while the file transfers to your computer so YOU might as well just DOWNLOAD it yourself manually. Having your DSL friend download it for your first doesn't make it any faster the way you are doing it. |

Solve : Windows Vista Password Problem? |
Answer» I've been having trouble logging on to my windows vista admin account on my laptop for a week now. I really miss my laptop Classic Reads like a script for new TV Series. If you google crack windows password, you'll see there are lots and lots of advice and tools to solve this. Since it's your own computer you are cracking, there is no ethical issue. I never tried any of these, though someone I worked with used something to crack the password to an old unused Windows machine that had been lying around the office for too long. Quote from: KenJackson on May 05, 2008, 07:06:48 AM Since it's your own computer you are cracking, there is no ethical issue How do you know that, hotshot? These threads have an unfortunate habit of going in a certain DIRECTION... Quote from: Dias de verano on May 05, 2008, 07:11:26 AM How do you know that, hotshot? Hotshot? Because the operative words were "my laptop". I didn't provide any new information. Everything is already out there. Quote from: KenJackson on May 05, 2008, 07:17:23 AM Because the operative words were "my laptop". But my point was, how do we know that's true? Anyone who has been around forums for a while has seen a squillion "reasons" why laptop passwords get "changed" or "forgotten". The kids, the girlfriend, a relative, the dog. Some may be true, some may not. There is no way to tell. The only sensible option is to advise the questioner to go to either the manufacturer or manufacturer's agent, or a commercial laptop repair company, who should, if they are REPUTABLE, ask for proof of ownership. Quote I didn't provide any new information. Everything is already out there. That doesn't mean we want it on here. Loosing one's password is a common and perfectly legitimate computer problem. It's so legitimate that even SourceForge, an honorable software site that is above reproach, hosts ophcrack which sees 7000 to 10000 downloads per day. He claims to own the laptop. If he is a thief looking for information about how access the laptop he stole, he sure is doing it in a round-about way. In fact, I CONSIDERED that before posting and decided his story is very believable. Ultimately, each person is responsible for his own actions. If someone stole a laptop, the guilt can't be transferred to someone who believes he is giving legitimate help. For the analogy, consider if you lock his keys in your car. It's your car. Do you just abandon it? Or do you get in the same way a thief would? Is it wrong for you to help your neighbor get back into his own car?Reminds me of Forest Gump. The problem isn't that I forgot my password, merely that my password isn't working. I have no idea how this happened, and I've been considering the possibility of getting my computer checked by the Staples store I bought this model from. No, I didn't steal it, I bought it. But I suppose I can't really prove it on a forum on the Internet so you guys can either BELIEVE me or not. I don't want to cause any trouble, I just needed some feedback on if this was a common problem and if it could be solved easily without having to spend the money to see a specialist. I'm going to bring in my computer after all, so thanks all for the help and the skepticism. -Horton Quote from: KenJackson on May 05, 2008, 08:01:08 AM Is it wrong for you to help your neighbor get back into his own car? Poor analogy. You know your neighbour. You know his car. You don't know a stranger on the internet. Quote from: hortonwho on May 05, 2008, 02:36:38 PM No, I didn't steal it, I bought it. You aren't causing a problem. You are simply asking for help for the problem that is afflicting you. You're doing exactly what this forum was setup for. The tension displayed in this thread is ultimately caused by the Microsoft policy of security by obscurity. That is, if there is a way to defeat security on a Microsoft system, everyone is supposed to keep it a secret. Compare that with the free software world, in which if there is a security problem, it is broadcast to all concerned so a secure solution can be coded and promulgated with unmatched haste. Two Items and then I am done. #1. I don't know how it is elsewhere, but in Texas, it doesn't matter, if you were helping someone who you believed, break in a car or a computer that you thought was theirs, you immediately become an accessory and the Judge does not care if you thought you were doing good. #2. I really don't think this forum was set up to help someone break a password or to debate those merits, but then I am not a moderator. |

Solve : Vista Media Center can't detect TV Tuner? |
Answer» I purchased a Gateway Media CENTER running Vista about 4 months ago. I played around with Media Center to get used to it. At the time Media Center was able to detect my Avermedia TV tuner without any problems, although I did not have an antenna to connect to the tuner. Now I have an antenna, but when I go to SET up a signal in Media Center I get the message "No TV Tuner detected". I've reinstalled the tuner driver and made sure it's the latest version. I've also tried a hotfix that specifically addressed some of my symptoms but nothing has worked. Device Manager also indicates that the tuner is working. I would prefer not having to reinstall Vista. Please HELP. Go Start. In Start search, type in: services.msc Hit Enter. There are 4 Windows Media Center services listed. See, if all of them are running. Thanks for the reply. I've found threads about the services status before, but hadn't had much luck. Lets give it another go. Here is what it looks like. Status Startup Type Extender Service Disabled Receiver Service Manual Scheduler Service Started Manual Service Launcher Automatic (delayed start) There is no status listing for 3 of the 4 services. What NEXT? Remember those settings. Now, set all of them to Automatic. Restart computer, and see what happens.I changed them all to automatic and restarted the computer. Before I opened Media Center I checked to see which services had started and the only ones were the Extender and Scheduler Services. I opened Media Center and still have the same error. I then tried right clicking on the Receiver Services and clicking Start. I got an error message that it failed to start the service. Any more ideas? Thanks. Is that card listed in Device Manager without any errors? It says it's working properly.TRY to put it in different slot. Try to uninstall it through Device Manager (not its driver, card itself). Windows will find it again upon reboot. I opened the computer case but the tuner is in the only slot it can fit into.Try to uninstall it. If that doesn't work, the only other advice, I can give you, is to try it on another computer. Maybe, it died.Thanks. |

Solve : Missing Ram, running Vista? |
Answer» Yep, like the title says im missing RAM or i might not know anthing about it. When i got this laptop it came with 1Gig of Ram. But it's only registering 502megs of it now. I think this may have caused my computer to slow down drastically, since i was told by other people that im crazy for running Windows Vista with only 502Megs of Ram. I have just recently Reformatted (my drivers failed and it TOOK a few tries to get windows to actually load completely) and done a few steps to remove some harmful things from my computer (i found a trojan which is removed now). Are you positive it came with 1G of RAM ? ? |

Solve : How to replace Rundll32.exe??? |
Answer» I can no longer open up any of the programs and run them like normal, without the "OPEN WITH" window popping up and asking me which program I want to use to open this application with. Also, I tried going to my Add/Remove program section but it says: You will eventually need an XP CD...sooner would be better than later. Agreed. I just went through this with Vista. I looked in my startup services, and seen two copies of Rundll32.exe, and they were attached to my Nvida drivers for my video card. I deleted them, and went and downloaded the newest drive for my card, and the problem was corrected. I have read on other sites, especially if you google this issue, and they blame Nero. Check it and see. Quote from: Spoiler on April 28, 2008, 08:02:13 AM Getting a copy off another machine should work. At least it has for me. But I agree with patio....you will need a copy of the CD sooner or later. Please elaborate one how you did this. I just inserted the usb stick, and tried simply to copy and paste "rundll32.exe" in the system32 folder, but it says it cannot copy because it's being used by another person/program. I then tried deleting the current rundll32.exe, but it says the same thing (being used by another person/program. I think this is my last resort since I'm almost positive my cd drive will not work. It will have to be done from a command prompt (press F8 at startup, before Windows starts to load). My bet is, if there is a problem with rundll32.exe, more problems on the horizon. Reformat, and reinstall are lurking. Quote from: quaxo on April 28, 2008, 08:15:18 PM It will have to be done from a command prompt (press F8 at startup, before Windows starts to load). Can you explain in details? I actually just tried that.. Went to ask the IT guy at work and he said to do: Start > Run. Type "cmd" and then once the window opens, type "chkdsk /f/v/r" Then type "Y" when it asks, and then reboot. I could only get to the "cmd" part, and then the "Open with" window appeared again asking me to select from the following listed programs to open the file with. So then I followed his next advice: if it doesn't work, can try safe mode with command prompt. I got to the point, where I typed "chkdsk f/v/r" but then it says the drive was locked. And asked if I wanted to do this upon the next restart. I typed yes and then it rebooted. And now I'm here. I just tried opening up SuperAntispyware and the "open with" window showed up again. .......... Broni, is there any other way around this?? I REALLY don't want to have to reformat. What version of XP are you running? Home...pro? Also do you have SP2 installed? Borrow an XP CD from the IT guy... It MUST match your Edition including Service Paks. For example if you are running XP Pro with SP2 installed the CD must be XP Pro w/SP2 Power down and re-boot. Go to Start/Run and type in sfc /scannow and hit Enter... Have the CD ready as it will ask for it. Let it run to completion. Remove the CD. Re-boot. Done. |

Solve : Vista installed on wrong HD.? |
Answer» I had to do a reinstall of Vista Home Premium. I have two HDs, an 80Gb for the OS and a 360Gb of storage and STUFF. The machine was SET up like this from the guy that built it. The HDs are SATA. When I installed Vista last NIGHT, I was frustrated about the problems with Vista and drivers, and wasn't paying attention to where it was loading. Evidently, it took the largest drive for c:/, and made the little one d: Now when it boots up, it seems slow, and it crashes. How do I fix this?Format the drive you don't want it on, reinstall it on the drive you do want it on.The 360 is probably faster than the 80G anyways...why not keep this setup ? ?The reason I didn't keep it was...Vista was loaded on the 320 Gb hd, and the 80Gb was like a storage. originally, the os was on the 80Gb. |

Solve : Computer crashes on boot? |
Answer» Well i have a problem with my PC when i turn it on the bios screen COMES up but then my computer just freezes, I dont know why this has started happening because i have not changed any settings or installed any new hardware in a while ... so any help would be appreciated. Do you get any distinct beep codes when you start the computer? Not just a typical one beep, but like a couple or more? Also, what kind of HD are you using? I'm asking because your computer seems pretty new, so I'm assuming it's going to be a SATA. You might be experiencing the same problem I had with mine. I had Vista installed on a brand new Intel system with a Seagate SATA HD. One day I turned it on and it just crashed. It wouldn't get to the loading screen as you said. I don't know if it was a problem with HD or Vista. Though I did manage to start over and load XP on it, so I don't think it was the HD, but who knows. No there is no beeps on start up and yes it does have a SATA hardrive and your problem sounds similar too the one im having now, also to patio thanks for the advice but i don't fancy taking the cover off and messing around with the insides of the computer ill just use the warranty i got with itGotcha...always best to go that route as most times even opening the case up can Void a warranty... Best of Luck to you. |

Solve : Friend's computer is in endless reboot cycle? |
Answer» He is running Vista home premium. It tries to install an update when it is turning on, and it reboots itself. We've tried all the OPTIONS from the boot menu. Same thing. Google turns up people with the problem, but no FIXES. Boot to safe MODE and remove the last 2 or 3 updates. It tries to install an updateDoes it say what update?I don't know if it says what update because I haven't actually seen it. Safe mode doesn't work, it does the same thing.Never mind, he fixed it. Apparently if you hit F11 it goes right to system restore.Good going |

Solve : Deleting user account? |
Answer» I am using window xp home edition. I want the computer to boot right into window without having to go through a user sign in icon. I have two account and I figured that I could just DELETE one of the account and then uncheck using the WINDOWS welcome screen through the user ACCOUNTS in the control panel. When I did this windows says I can't delete that account as it is logged on. So I logged off and logged on again making sure I was logged onto the account I wanted to keep. It still says that I am logged on and can't delete it. So I switched to the other account and tried to delete the account I wanted but it said I needed to log off it before I could delete it. I am stuck . How do I delete this UNWANTED user account and get windows to start up without a LOGIN? |

Solve : can't play commerical movie in dvd? |
Answer» Hi, I have a new HP computer well actually refurbishedAre you sure you have all of your drivers up to date? You could try VLC player. I have had good luck with it. http://www.videolan.org/vlc/ I have been able to play almost anything with it unless it is copy protected. I can't play any store bought movie. Movies I have copied I can play. the store bought movies will not register as even being a disc in there. When I checked if the dvd player was working properly it says it is. I didn't do anything about drivers....what do I have to do? thanks Quote and I uninstalled NortonI hope you still have some sort of AV program running.I don't know AV but if you mean a security program no I do not at this time since I uninstalled Norton trying to get this thing to run. Quote from: lindalisenby on April 18, 2008, 12:39:01 PM I don't know AV but if you mean a security program no I do not at this time since I uninstalled Norton trying to get this thing to run.AV=Anti-virus. If you don't have one and you're on the internet, you're playing with fire and you will have more problems than not being able to play a DVD. Quote You could try VLC player. I have had good luck with it.I guess I am not making myself clear. It is not a player because it doesn't even register that a disc is in the drive. If I go to my computer and click on D drive it does not show anything there. So is it because a movie you buy is copyright protected but that doesn't make sense than how could you watch a movie on your computer. I am really frustrated by this. I appreciate the answers so far.Try one of these: 1. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060 or... 2. Go to Device Manager, click a "+" sign NEXT to IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers. You'll see two items: - ATA Channel0 (or PRIMARY Channel) - ATA Channel1 (or SECONDARY Channel) Right click on each of them, and click Uninstal. Confirm. Restart Windows. They'll be automatically reinstalled.I am excited I think you are on to something. I tried what you said but it didn't work....but you said there WOULD be 2 things under IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers and I have 5 so maybe that is the problem. I have: ATA channel 0 ATA channel 1 NVIDIA nForce serial ATA Controller 0 NVIDIA nForce serial ATA Controller 1 Standard Dual channel PCI IDE Controller I only uninstalled the first 2 like you said.....now should I do the same to the other 3? I appreciate your help. |

Solve : Bad luck with Vista Recovery!? |
Answer» Alright here's my problem...I tried to do a vista recovery using the built in one, and as it was doing the recovery an ERROR MESSAGE popped up (it was just a bunch of numbers) and so I clicked on cancel and the computer restarted. Now when It boots up, before the windows logo appears, it says 'bootmngr is missing' press alt + ctrl + delete to restart. I did a restart, same thing. Ok so now a friend told me I could install Ubuntu and that way I can still use the computer, atleast for now. So it's installed and the computer automatically starts it up without the cd. I wanted to uninstall it, but I'm not sure how to do that. So the question is this: What are other options i can try to get vista back up, and how can I uninstall Ubuntu? |

Solve : download issue? |
Answer» Can you download Office 2003 professional on a vista operating system. I am trying but I have had no success, please help!!No, Office 2003 is not distributed by download. If you FOUND some place that offers it via download, you're probably buying illegitimate/pirated software. Care to identify the source? What I meant to say is that I have a copy of Office 2003 but I'm having problems downloading the program on to my new computer (Vista operating system). Perhaps I'm doing something wrong or may'be this isn't possible. I don't want to pay for for a new windows program if I already have one.Let's define download to MEAN getting a file from the Internet and TRANSFERRING it to your computer via the Internet. Installing a program from a CD or DVD is not downloading, it's installing. |

Solve : My computer won't recognize a burnt DVD?!?? |
Answer» Please all, bear with me. So I don't have a fancy pants computer at all, but it does have a DVD burner. My friend lent me a burned dvd (not anything thats copyrighted) that i was hoping to make a copy of for myself. This DVD has played without any problems in numerous stand alone DVD players, So I know that it was burned correctly, but whenever i put it into my laptop, it thinks it's a blank disc. I am running Vista and can't seem to get it to work. I have updated drivers, and done everything a somewhat experienced windows user might try, all to no avail. It however has no problems playing store bought dvds, or cd's, and will even play other burned music cd's. What am i missing??? PLEASE HELP ME!!!PS: I have a cheap-o COMPAQ Presario C571NR Laptop. stickers on the front of the cd drive say RW DVD+R DL, Compact Disc ReWritable Ultra Speed, and DVD Multi Recorder. If the DVD plays in standalone players, then I wonder what the format of the file burnt onto the DVD is, and whether it's a format that is recognized by computers?Im not sure what the format is, but im pretty sure he burned it off his computer. I plan on taking it to work today to try on computers there. Hopefully one of them will recognize it, and if so, i will let you know what the file format is.So I went to work and tried it in the computer there (at least a 6 year old HP with DVD-ROM drive) and it worked fine. Explored the disc and found Audio and Video files just like a store bought DVD. Still can't figure out why my laptop reads it as a blank disc?!?!? Also asked my buddy and he did burn it off of his computer, not a stand alone DVD burner. I am at a complete loss.....Do you get the pop-up asking what you want to do with the blank DVD?Yes. and if i go to computer and try to "explore" the disc, it wants me to title it to begin formating it. I havn't let it go past that point, because it is an only copy and i don't want to risk damaging it.Does your laptop read ANY DVD?Yes with no problem. It will read store bought dvd's (I dont have any other burned ones to try) as well as music cd's BOTH store bought AND burned (even tried one I burned like 8 yrs ago... Worked!)Have him burn you another one...TELL him to use the slowest recording speed and not play any RPG games while burning it...I'm beginning to think i may have a defective drive... The original disc I tried to burn, is a Verbatim DVD+R. Borrowed another buddy's laptop, and was able to make copy's no prob. Thinking it may have been a BRAND error, I burned a copy on an Imation DVD+R, still nothing. Burned on the slowest speed and walked away, nothing. SO, this morning, I dug out my ENTIRE DVD colection and tried them all, one by one. ALMOST all of them worked, BUT a few didn't. Noticed that the ones that didn't work were dual sided DVD's (silver on both sides) Has anyone ever heard of a dvd drive not reading a disc without a picture on the front? Or at least not a Dark picture (EXAMPLE recordable dvd's)? I know a cd drive reads via a laser that reflects off the disc, might mine be to powerful and shine RIGHT through it? Doubtful. But if so, why can i play burned music cd's? This is really driving me crazy trying to figure it out... Thanks again and in advance for your guy's help. Quote from: pontiacben on April 09, 2008, 09:22:56 AM why can i play burned music cd's? A DVD/CD drive uses different lasers for CDs and DVDs This is not surprising to me. My one year old Dell E520 with a T(as in Toshiba) SST TS-H493a DVD+RW (no updates offered) will not recognize some burned DVD's that my Pioneer 111D does on an 20.00 (ebay) external enclosure (pata). I would recommend you try your drive on one of those (or installed in) another PC with the disk in question. Commercial DVD's are not burned, but are "replicated;" a very expensive and complex process but 100% compatible. Burned DVD-r's are said to be slightly more compatible than DVD+r disks (which otherwise are a bit better). Lower bit rate as well as bit setting (which some burners allow you to change) also improves compatibility percentages. I must say daniel1212 you have enlightened me and made me feel better, knowing I am not alone in this. Thank you for that. However, now that I have found other discs which ARE "commercial" that my computer won't recognize, I still can't help but think that there may be something else wrong. Especially since I WAS able to read and burn a copy on another COMPAQ, VERY similar to my own. Does anyone know if Compaq uses local authorized warranty repair centers, or just one main place that you have to ship to? Not being sure that there is something physically wrong, I am hesitant to spend the $ to send it off. Not to mention the period of "computer-less boredom" and the anxiety involved in wondering if I'm going to get it back completely intact. I know that it would be foolish to ever ship a computer without PROPER insurance, but in the event that something does happen in-transit, (and with how inexpensive just buying a replacement drive would be) I'm not sure I would want to go through all of the hassle of trying to get it REPLACED. ^I know I kind of contradicted myself there, but if I don't HAVE to spend money to be happy with my computer's performance, I really don't want to.A brand new DVD dual layer burner is about 40 bucks shipped from newegg if you are in the U.S. Only tool needed to replace it is a Phillips screwdriver. Possibly someone you know is familiar with replacing drives. This would be the easiest/cheapest solution by far... |

Solve : Flash-related problem after Automatic Updates ran? |
Answer» I'm running Vista on a Dell VOSTRO 400. My daughter plays on Webkinz world (www.webkinz.com) and has never had trouble logging in. Until Tuesday's batch of AUTOMATIC updates installed. Now we can't login to that site, which uses Flash as part of the login. No problem logging in on our computer that is running Windows XP, so it seems to be a problem related to the last batch of updates. |
