Solve : Updating Vista Home Version?

Answer»

I have a desktop running Win XP Basic and a new laptop running Vista Home.  I do not have the laptop connected to the internet (and don't intend to) I want to move one of my older graphic programs over to Vista, but Vista cannot run it and I am told I need to download a file of some KIND to correct that in Vista.  I do know others who have moved this older program to Vista with no problems at all, so I'm not really sure why it won't work for me.

Can I download a file intended for Vista update to my XP desktop?  Does that make SENSE?

Thanks for any help available. What program is it? Most programs can't be MOVED, they have to be reinstalled. Quote from: Broni on May 08, 2008, 05:34:51 PM

What program is it? Most programs can't be MOVED, they have to be reinstalled.

Poor choice of words on my part...I am trying to install on the laptop from the original installation cd.

I was trying to ask if I could download the "fix" (if there is one) to the desktop and then take the file to the laptop VIA cd.

The strange thing about it is, I also have an older VERSION of PSP and it will install on vista perfectly........but I would prefer to run the more current version.

The graphic program is PSP ver. 9.

Thanks for any help you can give or suggest.PSP? Photoshop?Sorry   PSP stands for Paintshop Pro which is now owned by Corel Draw. What happens when you try to install it? Any error messages?I agree with Broni here...you should just try installing in Vista...if there is a patch it can be transfereed from one machine to the laptop via CD or flash drive or whatever...

Interesting Note # 1
This List  which is pretty comprehensive on software that won't run on Vista and/or has issues does NOT list PSP 9.0 as one of them...It is on "The List"  - It is listed as Jasc Paint Shop Pro.

The listing states "(Doesn't run with Aero - Reverts to Windows Basic color scheme)

I don't know what Aero is.  When I installed the program on Vista, it did say something about reverting back to Windows Basic color scheme.

All the files were listed in the windows explorer and the icon was set onto the desktop, but when I tried to open the program I got a message that said something to the effect that Vista could not open it.

Try this...
Find program's .exe file, right click on it, click Properties, then Compatibility tab, and put checkmark in Run this program in compatibility mode for (Windows XP).
Click OK.
Double click on .exe file, and see, if it'll open.I forgot about Jasc and went straight for a "P".......... Quote from: Broni on May 09, 2008, 10:27:01 PM

I will install the program again and give your suggestion above a shot.  Will LET you know it works for me.

Solve : Windows takes way too long to load...?

Answer»

Okay so when I turn my computer on, when it gets to the black screen (on vista) where it says microsoft corporation with the gren loading bar, i can see that where the light flickers/flashes when its loading something... it doesnt start flashing until a minute after the screen comes up.... why?  I have seen on other comps it starts right away..What doesn't start flashing?

Install/run/download anything before this happened? No I didnt, it justs seems to happen.  and truthfully IDK what its CALLED lol its the light that flashes when ur doin somethin lol i guess its the light for the processor or w/e but it seems to take too long.... somebody said maybe the hard drive takes a long time to respond?Ooh, are you talkin about the light on the computer?

When you turn the computer on, does anything come on? (like the manufacturer logo)well it doesnt get to the windows logo... it shows toshiba., then gets to the part with "microsoft corp." and the green loading bar, and theres the little lights like for the battery, power, etc. and the one that blinks when its processing something, doesnt start blinking for like a minute. which im pretty sure it should pretty quickly since all other laptops i sell with it run quite quickSo there is significant lag time before windows boots. I'm not sure why but you could try running a System Defragmenation and see what happens. Not too sound like a jerk, but I ran that, and it didnt seem to make a difference i hope its not a hardware problem I wouldn't think so, but we can't discount any possibilities.

Has the problem been running ever since you got the laptop or just recently?

How much RAM do you have on your computer?Well its got 2GB which isnt BAD, and its quite recent.  I havent REALLY put anything major on it, its been doin it since i pretty much got it.How does it boot to Safe Mode?hmm didnt try that....lemme try now and ill let you know.Ok so it was slow in safe mode as wel.... the last thing it said was loaded was crcdisk.sys and then it stopped for a while(like 30 seconds) then started up againWhen you click ENTER upon choosing Safe Mode, you should see a whole bunch of code.
Then it will pretty much freeze for about 30 seconds and then load Windows.

What do you mean by 'started up again'.
Do you mean it took longer to load as well?ok after it said crcdisk.sys was loaded, the light for the processor stops and it just sits on the screen with all of the loaded files or w/e it is for about 30 seconds before it moves on and starts flashing againHonestly, I really don't have a good picture. I understand, it's probably not easy to describe it.

Solve : improving desktop performance for windows aero?

Answer»

i have a intel core 2 duo t9300 2.50GHz with 3.00 GB of ram, and im running windows vista home premium. i have a NVIDIA quadro nvs 140m video card with 1399MB available graphics memory.

i was running the performance information and tools on vista, and my lowest score is with my desktop performance for windows aero(graphics) score, wihch is at 4.1.  if my gaming graphics score is 4.8, can anybody explain why my graphics score for running the operating SYSTEM is so low?

is there a way to improve this score without shutting off aero?  i am hypothesizing i might need to tweak a setting with my video card to boost this up a notch. The score itself isn't really all that important... the important THING is "Does your computer run properly?"

If it isn't broken, don't try to fix it.Cooling is a factor here. If you have a very good graphics card but it's overheated, it will run worse than an old graphics card.
Also, if you have many running background processes, this will slow down the game performance whether or not you have a good graphics card or not.thank you both for your replies!

my brother always tells me not to screw with the settings.. if its running fine, i DEFINITELY shouldnt mess with it.  i still do though, and thats why i always get myself into trouble!

in response to quaxo, i downloaded this program called 'vista optimizer'.  its not the greatest program in the world, and i only had it for a few hours before i ended up restoring my computer to its original settings, but it had some compelling features that i had no idea were even POSSIBLE.

one setting allowed my computer to run my full l2 cache to capacity, because vista defaults to a lower setting.  im not the most computer savviest, but i definitely bumped this up to the max for my system.

i dont know if the performance test tests this setting, but if i spent all this money on my computer and im not getting the maximum performance, i would do anything to max things out (without breaking anything of course)

while the scores arent that important, would you say that the graphics capabilities of my hardware are maximized to its fullest potential?

in response to carbon dudeoxide; i purchsaed my computer from the lenovo website, and configured it based on what things i could afford/would like on my computer.  are there such instances where computer manufacturers provide options for computers knowing that there may be possible heat issues?

i also used windows defender (thank you vista! =P ) to put hamper some of my background processes, and i don't think that that has an effect on my vista aero score.

thanks again for all of your replies!  i want to maximize the potential of my machine, and i think i have done that so far.  what kills me is that lenovo offers a computer maximization service, as if to say, it can only max out its capabilities if somebody with know how needed to do it!

Solve : 32 bit, 64 bit question?

Answer»

As i go around the forum, trying to learn about different things, and move to
different links for suggested things to look at, i SOMETIMES come ACROSS
downloads which say to download this for a 32-bit and something else for a 64-bit.

I have Windows XP SP2, auto updates fully on
Norton 2008 (yeah i know, you guys don't like it, but its worked for me for over 5
years, no viruses)

Where can i look in my system to know if i have 32 or 64 bit.  I've done some online
searches but it's hard to know where to go when you're not sure the question

Thanks again
Right click "My Computer" and select properties.
Select the General tab.
If it under System: says "Professional x64 Edition" it is the the 64 bit version. If not it is the 32 bit version.
genuine rule of thumb, "if you dont know what version it is, its 32bit."If you had 64Bit Windows you would already know it because 1/2 of your drivers would not be running properly...

If you had 64Bit Windows you would already know it because 1/2 of your drivers would not be running properly...

i have heard the same thing. i really want to get the 64bit version of vista to take advantage of my 4gb of RAM, but at the same time i have to ponder,"is it really worth the headache of dealing with 64bit drivers for that extra 800mb of RAM?"

I read an article recently on Tom's Hardware that stated you need more than 4 GB of RAM to see any advantage from switching to 64 bit. With "only" 4 GB of RAM you may actually see less free RAM available on a 64 bit OS compared to the same system with a 32 bit OS installed. The reason is that 64 bit applications take up more RAM than their 32 bit equivalents because all their variables are 64 bits long.

Thanks for the info, you guys are great. The NEW build when finished will be running Vista Ultimate 64bit and 4G to start with...
The package included Vista Ultimate 32bit so i plan on using an identical SATA drive and using the BIOS to determine the boot...
This should be able to create some real time comparisons.

All i have to do now is finish it...i'm about 4 bills away. Quote from: patio on April 20, 2008, 09:58:51 AM

i look forward to it. does the 64 bit operating system give a better performance boot than the 32 bit operating system (we're talking windows xp or vista here)

just out of curiosity, no intention of switching anytime soon.It will show a performance BOOST on applications that are specifically written to take advantage of the 64bit architecture...ive set my multiple hard drives with different OS's installed

I select (thru BIOS) x64 for everything other than gaming

And i still have xp for dvd ripping burning and editing and games

And yes they are partitioned

but yeah as said b4 its not 4gb needed for x64 its that you wont see all 4gb with x86

I think it is 4.8gb (abouts) for x64

Solve : How do I set up remote access to help a friend straighten out some PC issues??

Answer»

I want to connect remotely to my friend's PC from my PC at home (with his permission, of course) to help him straighten out a few issues he's having (he lives too far away from me to make a trip to his house for this practical).  I looked up how to set up remote access and found this page from Microsoft

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/mobility/getstarted/remoteintro.mspx

Is it really as easy as it's stated there?  If so, since I am wanting to connect to my friend's computer, I enter the full name of his PC when I go to connect, right?  So the only thing he needs to do is to allow remote access and give me his computer's name, correct?

Also, my friend is using Vista (Boooo!) and I have XP Pro, will that be an issue?

If I am wrong about this, please let me know, and if so, please either give me some instructions for how to set this up, or a link to a page that will show me, THANKS!!There could be some issues with bandwidth. See here
http://www.windowsnetworking.com/articles_tutorials/Windows-Vistas-New-Improved-Remote-Assistance.htmlAccording to that article, someone using Vista could help someone using XP, but not the other way around.  That doesn't make sense.   If you can connect one way, why can't you connect the other?PROBABLY the same reason as why a new version of Word will open a file created on an OLDER version but an older version of Word will not open a file created in Word 2007.check this out https://secure.logmein.com/go.asp?page=home&lang=enI haven't downloaded that yet, but I wonder, since it's not a Microsoft product, will it then allow me to connect my XP machine to his Vista machine, and allow me control?Use "Crossloop" a free UTILITY, This is better and it can be used on both pc's. I use it all the time with my
brother. Note: When you FIRST connect to each others pc's it may not complete
the connection on the first try (you will see that your friends screen ONLY partially fills in), just reconnect once more and it will come up great.

Solve : Ugh... very odd problem with Vista!?

Answer» GOOD evening ladies and gentleman, first post here!

This problem I have had for awhile... I TRIED searching for anyone else with it but I could not find anything.

I have had this problem for awhile and it seems to be getting worse... It started about 2 months ago my iTunes just stopped working... I can add music and sync my iPod but it won't let me play music.  It says the music is playing but no sound comes out...  I have installed the newest version of iTunes and still have the same problem.

Windows media player and Quicktime and VLC also have stopped working... it will not play ANY music or videos.  I have installed the latest versions of all of them.  I can watch some streaming videos such as Break.com and Youtube.com.

I am wondering if these is an easy fix I am overlooking?

I would appreciate ANY help!  Thanks!

-RyanBy the way, I am using a laptop if that makes any DIFFERENCE! Quote

Sound only? Sound, and video?
Did you try System Restore? In iTunes it is sound only... I click the song and it just STAYS at 0:00 but says it's playing, but I can play videos (with no audio).

WMP, Quicktime, VLC is no sound/video.

Can I do system restore that far back?

By the way on WMP I get this message: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/player/webhelp/default.aspx?&mpver=11.0.6000.6344&id=C00D11B1&contextid=230&originalid=C00D36B4

I did everything it said and no dice. Quote

See what restore points you have. Try different ones.Earliest ONE I have is 4/10 which is way too late... I just thought updating all of my software and doing every windows update would fix it... it didn't   Any other ideas?  Or things I can check for you to make it easier?Any errors in Device Manager?
Videos on-line have both, video, and sound?
What about DVDs?
Did you try to reinstall VLC?

Solve : Windows ready boost?

Answer»

Has anyone TRIED ready boost? I'm THINKING of installing vista on one of my MACHINES and am wondering how well it WORKS. I am using Eboostr on my XP machine, with a Sandisk Cruzer 4 GB pen DRIVE providing the cache storage, and it has made the machine seem a bit more "zippy", but quite honestly, it was fast enough before.

Solve : 32-bit vs. 64-bit?

Answer»

Hello!

I am most likely going to buy a computer this spring for the upcoming release of Age of Conan. I currently have a 7-year old computer that is clearly showing it's age.

I'd like this new computer to be able to HANDLE the next-gen games for years to come. I get so many mixed reviews about windows 64-bit vs. its 32-bit counterpart. Now I know that Age of Conan is geared towards high-end computers and it even states that it takes advantage of 64-bit processors. But at the same time I want a STABLE system; something that may not be possible with Vista 64-bit right now.

My question is, is it WORTH investing my "future" computer into a 64-bit operating system or am I good to go with 32-bit?

THANKSI doubt there is much difference between the 64 bit and 32 bit VERSIONS.
you are talking about differences that your eyes cannot even see.
i've tried both versions and it all seems to operate the same.

Solve : Vista + move media player?

Answer»

so im looking for a new computer for my sister and we found a nice windows vist for
175 $ works very nice but my sister likes to watch videos and stuff so we just wanted to see if it worked on the vista. We went to fox.com and tryed to watch a video it wanted us to install a plug in (move medio player) so we could watch it and we did... then when it started loading the video, somthing popped up and said the plug in was doing somthing illegal and BLAH blah and then it shut down... we disabled the firewall and it still did it yet when i do it on the computer i am typing on right now it works fine on the only difference is its WIN 2k not vista

does anyone know how to fix this problem??
    PLEASE help

thanks in advanceblah blah error message won't help to help you. Post exact error message, plug-in name, and computer specs.uh OK sorry for that part... lol i don't have the computer at my house atm because he haven't got it yet so im not sure what the exact message was but it was like "error this plug in is doing something illegal and we suggests you shut it down" then a box pops up and says "fire fox is closing down" with a little loading bar then firefox closes out
we tryed it with abc.com and some other site but it does the same thing

the info for the computer is...

AMD Sempron 3200 + CPU
512 MB DDR2-533
80 GB Hard Drive
10/100 fast ethernet network
56k modem
DVD/CD RW combo
6 usb 2.0 ports
Windows Vista Bacic
Open PCI-Ex16 slot
Couple of things I'd do.
Since it's used computer, I'd reformat it, and reinstall Windows.
Secondly, 512MB of RAM won't work well with Vista. You either upgrade it to 2GB of RAM, if you want to stick with Vista, or install different kind of Windows, preferably Windows 2000. If you want to put XP on it, you want to have 1GB of RAM. Other specs look OK.Ok thank you for the info, now we are sure we wont buy it... tehe
we will just keep looking.

Solve : Firefox -v- IE7?

Answer»

Hi guys, been having some CPU usage problems that SEEM to be related to IE7 would you recommend Firefox instead? If so do I delete IE7 first and then download Firefox?

Thanks in advance. Great site!!Is this the first time you've had this problem? If not, did you install or change any settings in Internet Explorer 7?

If you want, you can see if your problem continues with Firefox. In other words, you don't need to uninstall IE7 in order to use Firefox. You can have both installed WITHOUT problems.Yes, I recommend Firefox but not necessarily instead of Internet Explorer 7.  You will probably want to use both.  I've never been successful accessing my "hotmail" email account or Microsoft Windows Update from any browser except Internet Explorer (and for those of you with too much time on your hands, please don't bring up the Internet Explorer plug-in for Firefox). I think the two access examples I gave require active-x (supported by IE browsers) to work.  I prefer Firefox and/or Opera browsers for most web access.

So no, you don't want to permanently remove IE 7, but you might want to "repair" it.  Not sure where the "repair" function is triggered from these days.  Thanks guys,

Carbondudeoxide - Have a clean install of XP Pro and a fresh download of IE7, just seems that IE7 is using a *censored* of a lot of the CPU capicity when it runs. Have virus/spyware software and, according to those, all clear.

dahlabear - I don't have a Hotmail account so that shouldn't be a problem (I hope)

Deerpark - OK I will give it a go, nothing ventured nothing gained!!Both classic Hotmail and Live Hotmail works fine in FF 2 without any plugins btw.
But yes Win Update does not and probably never will work in FF.I have been to other sites that will only work with IE also.  I don't remember what they were though. Deerpark,
Because of your comment, I revisited my attempts to access my "hotmail" email account THRU Firefox 2.  You are correct, it does work.  I had blocked "Java" for untrusted sites in the "NoScript" add-on I'm running within Firefox.  By allowing "Java", I once again have access.

Thank you for the correction.
dahlarbearI would highly recommend FF overIE7, on  both technological and ideological grounds. I find it far more stable than IE,  even on Vista ("IE will have to close.."), and may even  be safer.   It offer far more customization, which reflects out God-given  individuality,  from multitudes of many skins (Outlook blue is my favorite)  to addon's (extensions) like Colorful Tabs, to TabsMixplus, Fireftp, Fullerscreen,  Menu Editor, SaveWithUrl, lto IE. view and IT tab, which let you view a link in IE or open selected sites under IE within Firefox.  You could even write your extensions  if you knew how. Overall this enables users to be part of a community that almost daily offers improvements.

I recommend all the extensions mentioned (though Fireftp may slow it down a bit, and the more extensions, the more memory it uses) ).  However,  right now FF is moving to it's newest edition, Firefox 3, and some of the extensions may not be ready.  Have you noticed certain websites that are a especially bad about causing IE to consume a lot of CPU resources?

Have you tried deleting Browsing history in IE?  Alternatively, might download CCLEANER and run it's Windows scan; be sure to include most of all of the IE items shown in CCleaner's list of items to select for the scan.  Get the Slim version of CCleaner at http://www.ccleaner.com/download/builds

If you install Firefox and try it, compare it to IE.  Maybe there won't be as much difference in CPU Usage as you expect.

Solve : Unable to look for printers?

Answer»

I am running Windows 7 Ultimate 32 bit.  When I click on the control panel and click on "DEVICES and Printers," nothing new comes up.  The green bar at the top shows that something is loading, but nothing ever does.  Also, when I go to print a Microsoft Word document and I select "Find a printer" in the print window, an error comes up saying "The Active Directory Domain Services is currently unavailable."  The strange THING is that I have no problems printing or adding printers, I just have problems with viewing printers, changing default printers, etc.  Does anyone have any advice for me?Is your pc PART of a domain?

If it is there will likely be restrictions in place put there by the systems administrator as to what you have access to, usually the restrictions apply to control panel with shared devices, permissions, software restrictions etc...

If you are the administrator of the domain you will need to log onto the server to view permissions, devices and MAYBE will need to take a look at the MMC console.

No, my PC is not part of a domain.  I think that this is a problem with my computer and not a network.  Does anyone know if the problem is the Active Directory Domain Services?  How do I enable this service?Perhaps this will help: http://blog.taragana.com/index.php/archive/how-to-start-or-disable-services-in-windows-7/Okay, I figured out half of the problem.  The Windows Firewall was blocking this option for some reason.  I added an EXCEPTION for the service.

However, I still cannot select "find a printer" because the service is not running.  I went to "Services" and could not find the "Active Directory Domain Services" on the list.Have you installed all the relevant drivers for the printer? Without these your printer will not be located.. if the printer did not come with a disk then look up there website and check there.. if you are having problems with finding them tell us and we will help you locate them.Yes, I believe that all drivers are installed.  The printer works fine.  I am just asking how to turn on the Active Directory Domain Services.

Solve : Un-Delete User Profile?

Answer»

I have deleted my profile from my computer. I SELECTED "keep files" before the LAST step. I click on the folder that was saved on the desktop. IT WAS EMPTY!!!!!!!!!!
What files were you expecting it to keep? Where were they located before your deleted the profile?

TYPICALLY, the only files that option will keep are files located in the user profile folder before it deletes the folder. That folder is typically located in C:\USERS\Username, where "Username" is your profile name. If the files were located anywhere ELSE, they should still be there. You can try navigating to C:\Users\ and see what users are there and if your files are still there. You should also check C:\Users\Public and see if your files are there, too.

If you still can't find your files and think they might have been deleted, you can try something like Pandora Recovery and see if you can located and recovery the deleted files.

Aside from that, I'm not sure there's much else you can do.

Solve : recovering email?

Answer»

I am going through a divorce and needed some EMAILS that are missing from my folder.  When I tried to log in the other day my password had been changed and I had to reset it, now the emails are missing.  I have two QUESTIONS, one, is there a way to prove someone has gotten into my email account and two, how do I recover the missing emails? What email ? ?it's a hotmail account.  I really need to either recover the emails or prove that he is the one that got into the account and deleted them.  Any thoughts?  I mean, looking back, he knew the answer to my secret questions, so...Really dumb question: did you check the Trash folder?I did check the trash folder.  And was thinking about DOWNLOADING a "free" scan to recover LOST email but that makes me nervous.  I seriously want the emails back, however, proving he did is worth so much more...Only the ISP provider can actually attempt to prove this...altouugh if he used your machine at the time it's now impossible...
Contact Hotmail... i doubt they can do much...
Best of Luck moving on..PS I'd recommend backing up all important data you need off that machine and doing a full format and clean install of Windows...
After that i'd recommend setting up all new email and social contact accounts...He did not use my computer, and I have no idea how to get in touch with hotmail!  Its crazy.  Someone else told me to contact them and see if they can provide something from the day that my password changed and the emails went missing, showing emails deleted from a computer that I have never logged on with?  Does that sense?  And any suggestions finding anyone at hotmail to help me?  I have the date the password was changed and everything...I think you are wasting your time trying to get hotmail to help you. Change your password to something really HARD to guess and then add things like #$% so only you can get into it.

With that said......

Solve : need to use more memory?

Answer»

this question is a two-parter and i don't think the second part belongs here so please forgive me.

So i have 3GB ram and I"m BARELY scratching the surface as far as usage, I was curious if there was a way i could USE more ram without applications as far as a tweak or something. If not what are some memory intensive applications because I'm barely hitting 1GB.

By the way i have windows 7 and my ram is MHz 667 so its not the best.why do you want to use more ram when you don't need? As far as I understand, you only use as much memory as you need.well because i bought the EXTRA 2GB thinking i needed it, but i guess not. i just didn't want to waste money is all. The OS will manage memory usage just fine without any outside interference.with Vista and 7, unless you disable superfetch, you never have more then a few megabytes of "free" RAM. there is plenty available, because superfetch gives it back when needed. more RAM, at the very least, cna translate into better superfetch caching.OK i get What BC_Programmer is saying, plus i did some searching and came to  the conclusion that the task manager isn't as good as I thought it was(but its still handy). what in your personal opinion is the best resource manager? What do you mean the best resource manager? What is it you want to use it for?I think process viewer would be better wording, something like task manager but better. do you understand now?You can try PROCESS EXPLORER
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896653.aspxthanks for the link, process explorer seems perfect

OK I'm content with everything you could probably close this thread now.Glad to help. Threads remain open.

Do I need a OPK,or......what?...Thanks for any aid
Spotmau should be officially classified as malware. What do you mean you have a 32 bit machine? The windows 7 64 oem version at install informed me that the configuration of the hardware was 32...It is using a pentium 4 cpu. I was given a burned 32 bit version of windows to transfer the product key license from the original 64 bit oem version ,from the store that I bought it from...yet it will not recognize the 32 bit disk.  How do I get this to read the 32 bit version?

You need to settle this with the store where you bought it.No,it WAS NOT necessary to go back to the store, for those who were interested in this thread,it was resolved by using trying no less than 3 different drives temporarily PATCHED in until ONE read the disk they supplied. Installation was successful, and that is how it went. Quote from: purejuiced on May 04, 2010, 03:11:13 AM

What kind of drivers? Thanks for all help given, and the welcome, I intend to contribute when able. Solve : blue ray movies?

I have a new sony Vaio laptop running WINDOWS 7.   It has a built in BLUE Ray< Optiarc BD RW BD-573056, Player.
What do I have to do to get it to Play Blue Ray Movies?Put in a Bluray disc?

What are you asking? What program to use?

Either the DVD software that came with the laptop, or with a third-party program such as VLC Media Player.I read this post EARLIER, and was confused by it.  If the laptop came with a blueray player, I would certainly think that the necessary software to play blueray disks would be included.Any application should be able to play the disc.

For example, the evolution from CD to DVD DRIVES - the same media player can be used to play both.
From DVD to Bluray, the same media player will be able to play both.

It's just another storage method:
I store my data on a flash drive, so I need a USB port.
I store my data on a Bluray disc, so I need a bluray drive.
No major difference. Quote from: Carbon Dudeoxide on May 02, 2010, 10:10:42 PM

Any application should be able to play the disc.
No. The application has to explicitly understand the blu-ray FORMAT. it is not the same as a DVD.

Quote
For example, the evolution from CD to DVD drives - the same media player can be used to play both.
Also untrue. I can't use the CD player from Windows 95 to play DVDs- I can't use winamp to play DVDs, but I can use it to play CDs. And so on for many other players. the CD audio format is completely different from DVD.
Quote
From DVD to Bluray, the same media player will be able to play both.
Most Media players can play both, but not all media players can play both. Again- the formats differ, and the file system layouts aren't the same, either. The player has to know this.

It is more then just another storage method. a flash drive uses a file system, and acts as such. a bluray disc uses a filesystem as well, but the blu-ray content is stored in a certain file-system arrangement. You could copy the file system to a flash drive if it was large enough, but that doesn't make your USB drive a blu-ray disc.

Solve : Downgrade from Windows 7 to VIsta?

Answer»

Quote from: talontromper on JUNE 18, 2010, 11:39:26 AM

Well that maybe the case, however the total space used  for XP's windows folder is along the lines of 2 gigs of space that has to be allocated. with WIN 7 its along the lines of 15 gigs.... as far as RAM is concerned xp in its most rudimentary form it only used 150 MBs and 7 uses 1 gig plus of RAM

Oh. He meant disk space. ANYHOW, hard drives and RAM are cheap now. No point in trying to cram a 2010 operating system into 2005 hardware.
Or just as an after thought we stop entertaining this endless argument which suites no purpose.
This is to trolls as Cat-nip is to kittens.

I say we all walk away... but by all means carry on.If you want a really small operating system look at Linux Puppy. It will run on 64MB of ram and is only 98.6MB in size. You can run it from a USB drive and you don't NEED a hard drive. Now that is small. Easy Peasy isn't that small. It is more modern and built to be used on net books. It can also be ran from a 4GB USB drive. Both will surf the net, play DVD, and all the other things that we do with Vista,Seven and XP and they do it in a hole lot less space. I set up one of my computers with Linux Mint, I loaded it with the same pictures and files that I had on it with Vista. Vista took up just under 50GB of space. Linux Mint takes up 7GB with the same files and pictures. The 160 GB HD will never get filled up with Linux Mint. I didn't have to load picture editing software it came with it or antivirus software and such because it isn't needed. It also came with Open office and a bunch of other stuff that if you want in Microsoft what ever it is an add on. Can you tell I have had it with Microsoft? You all have a good day now.More fool me for saying 'Carry on'. Oh the shame. Quote from: Mulreay on June 18, 2010, 01:04:23 PM

A lot of things in life have no point, like cow-tipping and drinking one's own urine, but they're entertaining nonetheless. This discussion is on topic for the most part, so there's no reason for it to end. Heaven forbid anyone should share an opinion, which is what was asked for by the OP.

Downgrading was a significant PORTION of my BUSINESS from the time Vista came out until recently. I have been asked to downgrade a few Windows 7 systems to XP, but that's it.

My grandmother is 80 years old. She's still running an old Pentium that I had years and years ago. It has 256MB RAM and runs Windows 98. Do I need to give her an upgrade to XP, Vista, or 7? Why would I? All she does is email on it (seriously, she only has Juno email, no internet service). She knows exactly how to do the things she needs to do on it and that's all that matters to her. My mother is 84.  Her first computer had Win 98SE.  She's been using Win XP for about 2 years now, as I recall, on a older computer given to her.  And, she's talking about getting a new computer.  When she does, it will, of course, have Win 7, and I have no expectation that she'll be asking for a downgrade of her OS.  Of course, she'll have questions about Win 7 but I think we can work through that.  Her transition from Win 98SE to Win XP was not terribly difficult and I don't expect that a transition to Win 7 will be so either.

Solve : Help with CD burning/CD-ROM drivers!!?

Answer»

I have a Sony Vaio VGN-NR498E using Windows vista. I have installed/uninstalled various programs over the past 2 years. I have always used nothing but Windows Media Player for my media needs and have the current edition.

My comp will not recognized that there is a blank CD-R in the drive, therefor I can no longer burn Cd's. Other disc's can be read just not CD-R's.

I have downloaded every update that Sony eSupport has to offer. I have reinstalled the drivers, made sure recording is enabled, and obviously tried several different blank CD's. I also tried a few H_KEY techniques, NOTHING IS WORKING  My laptop could burn CD's in the past but recently i can not.

I was starting to think that possibly my CD-ROM drive may be missing, or possibly i have mistakenly uninstalled a program that is used to read/write CD-R's.

when looking under "Device Manager" and expand DVD/CD-ROM drives there is only one listed called: "PIONEER DVD-RW DVRKD08 ATA Device" Should there also be some sort of CD-ROM device listed here as WELL?

I am at a complete loss, I sure hope some one out there has the answer!!

Your slightly unclear as in what you can and can't do. You may have burnt out the motor SPEED to burn CD's I'm no guru on this but my optical can play CD's but no longer play or burn DVD's as the drive/motor is over used and to be fair dead.
This sounds more and more like a hardware issue than a software problem the more I think about it.

I may be wrong... Quote from: Mulreay on July 17, 2010, 07:33:06 PM

my optical can play CD's but no longer play or burn DVD's as the drive/motor is over used and to be fair dead.

Surely this is laser problem, not a motor problem. An optical drive may have up to 4 lasers as follows:

CD-ROM: CD read laser
CD-RW: CD read laser, CD write laser
DVD-ROM: CD read laser, DVD read laser
DVD-RW: CD read laser, DVD read laser, CD write laser, DVD write laser

The failure or deterioration of one laser diode would affect the drive's functioning in a certain way that you can easily guess. Note that if a read laser fails a burner can no longer burn that type of disk.

littleady2389, it sounds like either your CD read or write lasers have failed. (If a read laser is failed, you cannot read or write)

The device listed in your Device Manager is a DVD-RW device. This is a DVD burner. They can also burn CDs. So you do not need any other device listed.

Solve : Starting a batch file at first run?

Answer»

I made a small script that silent installs some software for me. I was hoping to slipstream the software along with a WINDOWS 7 installation but that's not an options as vLite failed for me.

So now I made a batch file that does the job. The problem is I need to run it once automatically the FIRST time I log on.

Any ideas?

-Foxhound-What's the app and why do you say VLite failed ? ? Quote from: patio on June 13, 2010, 09:44:53 AM

What's the app and why do you say VLite failed ? ?

There is quite a bit of applications to install, and no I prefer not to use ninite as I don't have interinet CONNECTION at first run and even if I did the bandwidth is way too low to download 20-30 applications that I need. But if you must know:

 *FIREFOX
* PDF reader
*JRE
 *CCleaner
 *Pidgin Messenger
*Tremulous (With backport)
*Notepad ++
 *Ultra ISO
*WinRAR
*uTorrent
*Virtual Box
*Avast Antivirus
*nVidia graphic drivers
lan/ethernet drivers
chipset drivers
HD audio drivers
smart card reader drivers
and a lot of games.

All of this is automated by the batch script, I really just need to figure out how to automatically run it at first start.Sorry but i still don't get it...
The apps should already be DLoaded in order to slipstream them into an install CD/DVD...Well... the problem with that is, I can't make special settings and tweaks on the OS installation, which also comes in the batch file.I'm not 100% if this is still the case but on some older windows versions (win95,98,2000) I believe it's possible to have a batch file start when windows starts by placing it in C:\windows or C:\windows\system32 and calling it "winstart.bat".Is nlite and the like even legal to discuss on this forum? Anyway, I have yet to find a good way to solve the problem. I tried a knockoff project of vLite called RT7Lite but it crashed upon opening.

The EULA forbids reverse engineering, extraction of files, creating custom install disks, etc. I am not saying this is right or good or that I agree with it.
Does the EULA forbid slipstreaming?  Microsoft has documentation for slipstreaming various hotfixes and Service Packs into OS installations anyway.  For the most part, nLite simply does the work for you (granted it allows you to do other things, like remove services and whatnot).

For Windows 7, try RT Seven Lite.  It's basically vLite for Windows 7.

With vLite, as long as you download the Windows Automated Installation Kit, or the "WAIK" (same kit for making Windows PE discs), it's legal.  I would imagine the same thing for RT Seven Lite.

And to answer the question about whether it's possible to start a batch with Windows, there are a few options for doing so:

1) In XP: Copy the batch to C:\Documents and Settings\username (or All Users if you want it to start regardless of who logs in)\Start Menu\Programs\Startup

In Vista and 7: Copy the batch to C:\Users\username\Start Menu\Programs\Startup (or C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup if you want it to start regardless of who logs in).

2) Start -> Run -> gpedit.msc -> User CONFIGURATION -> Windows Settings -> Scripts (Logon/Logoff) -> right-click "Logon" -> Left-click "Properties" -> click "Add" -> click "Browse" -> paste your batch script there and select it.

Of course the drawback to #1 and #2 is that it will run EVERY time you start up/log on.  For what you're looking for--having it run upon first logon after the OS is installed:

3) Add an autounattend.xml file to the sources directory of the Windows 7 DVD and under Settings Pass: OOBESystem - MicrosoftWindows-Shell-Setup, add a FirstLogonCommands line to run your batch script.  The batch script itself would be stored under X:\sources\$oem$\$$ or X:\sources\$oem$\$1\scripts (substitute X with your DVD-ROM drive letter).  Anything under $$ gets copied to \windows\system32 and anything under $1 gets copied to the root of your boot drive (usually drive letter C).

I would imagine RT Seven Lite may have an option for editing your autounattend.xml file before it does its thing with the .wim file.

For the exact syntax of , go here:

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc722150%28WS.10%29.aspx

In a nutshell, it would be something like this:

Code: [Select]<FirstLogonCommands>
   <SynchronousCommand wcm:action="add">
      <CommandLine>c:\batch\installmahschtuff.bat</CommandLine>
      <Description>This will install my schtuff.</Description>
      <Order>1</Order>
   </SynchronousCommand>
</FirstLogonCommands>
This is assuming that your Windows 7 DVD has an installmahschtuff.bat file under X:\sources\$oem$\$1\batch\installmahschtuff.bat (again, replace X with the drive letter of your DVD drive)

If you don't want to create the autounattend.xml file yourself, and RT Seven Lite doesn't do it for you, use Windows System Image Manager.  That comes with the WAIK.

So is it the computer or programs that are performing slowly, or internet navigation? The main thing which is slow is the video on youtube or online stuff. is there a way of checking the performace of the GRAPHIC card? Sounds more like your ISP than your graphics card. What type of internet connection do you have?ok. This laptop is connected via the internal wireless connection that came with the machine.

There is another computer in the house that has a usb wireless connector that works just fine.

Is there a way of testing the laptop?Test your connection speeds here http://www.speedtest.net/  it will show you if your connection is slow.move closer to your wifi router or connect directly to your wifi router with a PATCH cable and see if network performance improves. If it does, then try a different channel on your router or consider repositioning it. Usually a central location in your house or business is ideal. If that doesn't work, check for a driver update your your wifi adapter for your laptop.Hit Ctrl+Alt+Del and look at the task manager. tell me how many processes that it shows are running in the bottom left hand corner.Would be quicker to press ctrl-shift-esc Quote from: Mulreay on May 26, 2010, 02:35:25 AM

Solve : hard drive capacity has vanished & reinstallation of Vista does not complete?

Answer»

Please excuse me if i mess up this is my first time submitting a question.
My HP Media Center PC was running excellently until about 2 weeks ago, the PC is equipped with the Vista OS, it has a 500 GB hard drive. The anti-virus EXPIRED, i uninstalled the anti-virus and foolishly did not replace it (THAT will never happen again). I suspect that the PC is infected. I wiped the hard drive and uninstalled the OS, I did a reinstall from a new set of recovery discs. I performed the reinstall several times, each time after the last CD ejects and the PC is in the process of rebooting it hangs up (blue screen, one of the messages SAYS "don't touch or move the PC while it is rebooting". It never completes the process, one night just to make sure that I was'nt being impatient, I left in on all night, no change). I can remove the blue screen by Ctrl-Alt-Del. From time to time I GET a pop-up saying that the PC is infected. Another problem that I am trying to resolve is the loss of capacity on the hard drive.  HP's Tech Support guided me through a hard drive test, it passed. So the 450 GB have vanished!!!!! I did not know that was possible. The PC now indicates that the "C" drive 48.8 GB & "D" drive 9.76 GB, I don't know what to do to fix either of these problems. Please let me know what you suggest.  ThanksIt does not sound as though you've actually formatted the hard drive before reinstalling the OS.So when i installed WipeDrive it indicated that my Drive 1: 500.11Gb. When i installed recovery disc 1 i thought that one of the steps during the installation process was for the software to partition the HD. If this is wrong how do i FIND the missing partition  capacity? I am not FAMILIAR with  partitioning, what do i need to do? Thanks for your advice and time.

Solve : Cannot boot after install of Windows Vista SP1?

Answer»

Did you try startup repair: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial148.htmltried that. startup repair did not detect a problem. which is strange, it should be able to detect the error occuring during the vista boot.

but it didn't.

and now i'm back to square one.

can anyone direct me further?I'm out of options here.
Try free support: http://support.microsoft.com/oas/default.aspx?prid=11274&gprid=500921It seems like Google is seldom a friend when searching for botched SP1 installations, regardless of which STAGE it HAPPENS.  You'll see a lot of incidents, but seldom any solutions...

Given the time and headache, I'm wondering if it's better just to back up your data, format, then IMMEDIATELY install Vista SP1 afterward.

Granted that doesn't explain WHY it happened, but at least it GETS you back up and running.

I wouldn't try a repair-install at this point.  Your files are on SP1, and repair-installing would cause even more problems trying to bring the OS back to RTM stage.  I agree, Jason.

I can help you with your backing-up process, but I strongly suggest you completely reinstall Vista (like I suggested many times before )

ummmm...errrrr......alright.

Thanks all of you guys for your help and suggestions, appreciated it all.  I have the same problem as you did. Computer lock- up with 0xc01a001d flickering on the screen after loading loading WINDOWS Vista SP1 as recommended by Microsoft.  I did not see a  cure posted for it yet.  What did you have to do to get your computer running again?   -- Thanks- Litch

Just bought a new laptop - (HP 6735s Laptop AMD Turion X2 Dual Core RM-72 2.1Ghz, 4GB 800DDR2, 320GB - with Windows VISTA Home Premium)

There are a few problems which I just cant resolve.

Eg
 - Windows Media Player will not work and I cant reinstall
- TRIED using hp recovery MANAGER - but there is no option to restore factory setting as far as i can see.
- tried installing Real Player, but it just will not install. It downloads the exe to the computer but if you double click, it goes no further than the download window.

I think my best bet is to restore factory settings - is there a way of doing this?new pc/laptops don't come with a windows disc this is so the retailer has CONTROL to fix or ammend a bad install but if as you say the laptop new just take it back for a repair,or just borrow another version of vista or new windows 7 then do a fresh install.... Take it back. If it's having problems right out of the box, you will probably continue having trouble with it.Ditto. Quote from: boffy1970 on May 04, 2009, 12:20:38 PM

Windows disks are licensed to ONE computer so I would advise against "borrowing" any disk unless it is Linux. Quote from: fat_basterd21 on May 04, 2009, 08:39:30 PM

This is innacurate....
The liscensing is tied to the machine that carries the liscense itself...any CD/DVD will work.
You then have to do the online/phone registration and your good to go...
This has been the case since XP was RELEASED.

Solve : Random Pixels in background and freezes when trying to boot normally.?

Answer»

I have looked everywhere and cant find anything on this problem, possibly because its hard to look for in a search engine.

When i boot my computer, i get random pixels everywhere in the background. On the first screen i get lines running vertically. On the second i get big green squares all over. and even right now in safe mode i get little light green squares and half squares all over certain areas like this blue topic thing i am typing in and my scroll bar. The computer randomly froze on me and when i tried restarting this occured, when windows is loading before it loads the users the screen goes black and jst stays there. I can boot into safe mode but the pixels still show. Every once in a blue moon i can boot it and the pixels wont show and my computer works fine for a while until pixels will run diagnally across my screen then it will turn black then i am right back here.

I am running vista currently and i have reformatted my hardrive SEVERAL times and have tried xp as well. Somtimes it wld WORK for a few boots before messing up again, sometimes it wouldnt work at all. I have ran AVG VIRUS scan over and over and nothing. I have ran a registry cleaner nothing. I dont really know what else the problem can be. Are my bios messed up? what and how come it works every once and a while.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, i have backed up what i must have and will do whatever to try and get my computer to work.

- oh yah, i have a Dell Precision M90 laptop. Can you hookup the laptop to an external monitor and see if the problem still exists.

Also have a look in Device manager for problems with your video card.

Seems to be various issues with the model..

http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=124186no, i can go buy a cord and hook it up to my tv and see. but would that stop it from booting up normally?

and i actually just looked at my device manager right before i seen that post, it says its up to date and all, should i try uninstalling the driver and reinstalling it?Corrupt drivers MIGHT cause the problem.....I read all those posts and their are a few things i can try, so thank you. However i uninstalled my video nvidia driver and now when i download and try to install it, it claims i am not using windows... and dont install the driver.

Solve : All-in-One PC: Awesome at your fingertips?

Answer»

It looks like a notebook without a keyboard or a cover and resembles a flat screen with a handle. When I saw it this week I fell in love immediately. I thought it would be great to share it with you guys, so here’s Katty Mann with another techno review, featuring today the all-in-one Shuttle X50. Get ready.

What’s an all-in-one computer?
Simply put, the all-in-one X50 is a PC, a computer that you operate with your fingertips directly on the screen or with a stylus pen, if you wish. Amazing!

This wonder contemplates every imaginable task a teenager or a professional could need. Touch the slim screen and ALMOST instantly you see an intuitive interface with just about any software you may need: office applications, multimedia, photo handling, email, Internet navigation… you name it.

Gather your friends in the living room, place the flat screen on a shelf, flip the handle upside down until it snaps and —voila!— you turned it into a stand like those behind your PORTRAITS. Slightly touch the screen to start a 3D game competition with your friends. ADJUST the angle and watch a cool video with them or just LISTEN to your favorite musical groups.  You can even mount the screen on the wall!

Now, flip the stand upward and take it to the bedroom. Touch and hold the finger (no more right-clicking!) and adjust the volume. Then, smile for the 1.3 megapixel built-in camera, record some words—forget about plugging a mic, the X50 ALREADY has one—and send a video email to your cousins in the other hemisphere. Shuttle included Wi-Fi connectivity to make your Internet life easier.

Besides its 1366 x 768 pixels wide screen, the X50 includes 5 USB ports, LAN port, Ethernet and audio-in and out support. Also, you will find a Kensington Lock slot (to attach a combination lock and prevent theft) and a 4-in-1 memory card reader so you can easily transfer data from any kind of removable media, such as mp3 players, digital cameras or a PDA.

Whisper Quiet!
Slim as a book, it comes with a 160 GB hard drive and an Atom 330 dual- core processor by Intel. Although it comes with Windows XP already loaded, its 1 GB of system memory (DDR, expandable to 2 GB) allows Window Vista.
It also includes GMA950, Intel’s second generation of Graphics Media Accelerators, which means you will have a reasonable performance.  Plus, Shuttle’s innovative I.C.E (Integrated Cooling Engine) provides a noiseless experience. CPU heat is trapped and sent to an array of fins (a radiator) using passive convection, a technology that made Shuttle computers the quietest in the market.

Dimensions: 391 x 327 x 36 mm
Screen: 5.6" 16:9 Wide Panel
Audio: Realtek 5.1 Channel High Definition audio
Disk Drive (SATAII) supports up to 600 GB.

I visited the website.  I truly find the medical articles there to be well written, yet nothing was credited to the above mentioned author, Katty Mann.  Cheap shot of the day:  Perhaps this is a mere oversight by the fine web designers at THE OUTSOURCING COMPANY

The computer itself seems pretty intriguing -- especially if a keyboard can be plugged in when needed.

Solve : Software conflict with Apple Mobile Device Service??

Answer»

I have an Iphone 4 and now Itunes doesn't recognize the phone when i plug it in to the computer. I have window 7 on a Toshiba Satellite T135-S1312 LAPTOP. I have tried to unintall and reinstall both itunes and AMDS but it didn't solve the problem. I also tried to restart AMDS and set it to automatic, but it didn't work either. I noticed that when I play a movie on Media Player Classic and put it to full screen mode, after 10 minutes or so, the screen goes back to its normal size. I saw an error message at the bottom of the screen. The message says "Focus lost to mobile DEVICE service". It's been like this for couple of months already. I couldn't add anymore new song to my phone. I've run out of option try to fix the problem myself, and in desparate need of help. Thank you!Have you talked to an Apple store re this issue? Seems to me that they should be more aware of the problem.truenorthIs the phone fully charged ? ?truenorth: I've tried the apple support forum and they said it's not the phone problem, it might be something wrong with the computer. That's why I am seeking for help here.

Could somebody help me to solve this problem, please.Just so as you do not put all your eggs in the CH "apple" forum. While there does exist a great number of very competent members to assist on most of the CH sub forums. It was my EARLIER OBSERVATION (and i THINK it still remains) there is not the depth of CH members that can give a lot of advice on the "Apple" forum. I do note your comments re the question being posed on an "Apple support forum" however that is not what i had earlier suggested. I believe that you may be better served by either phoning or dropping into an Apple store and pose your issue to them. I did a search to view forums specifically for i Phones and there does appear to be many. Here is but one you may wish to try.

Now, I know I had a topic on here about my browsing history and how I wanted to restore it. This is a little different. All of a sudden, when I check the websites and webpages that I LOOK up, theres nothing there. This started on Saturday. I went to check my browsing history to see what sites Ive been on and there was nothing there. It shows the history from 1,2 and 3 weeks ago fine, that hasnt disappeared yet, all the sites Ive been on are not shown. Can someone please help me?Browser? I uploaded it a couple of weeks ago and it was fine until Saturday.

You uploaded what?I uploaded Internet Explorer 9 a few weeks ago and it was ok until about Saturday where nothing is showing up in my history section. I think you mean you downloaded and installed Internet Explorer 9.

Go to Internet Explorer 9's options, on the General tab, make sure "Delete browsing history on exit" is unchecked.

If that doesn't work, try resetting IE9's settings:

Well, I TRIED to reset IE9's settings by using the LINK you gave me and it didnt work. I lost whatever browsing history I had from 3 weeks ago and when I check to see what websites I have been on today, nothing shows up. What should I do next? Quote from: quaxo on September 13, 2011, 10:52:17 PM

You didn't say if you checked this or not.Delete browsing history is unchecked. Uninstall IE9 and then do a reinstall. It sounds like something maybe corupted.

Well, I have fixed it!!!  I got the browsing history to work. What I did was I clicked on tools, internet options and where it says browsing history, I clicked delete. Then I believe I checked off cookies, history and something else and it WORKED. The only thing is that I wish I was ABLE to get back the history I lost for the past 3 weeks. I tried system restore but it never works for me. Now Im having the same problem with my browsing history again. It just started today. I have a question. Its been about a week since I cleared my browsing history but I have A TON of stuff in browsing history. A lot of youtube videos and a lot of searches from different websites. Could it be that there is way too much stuff on there already after a week?

I have IE 9 and deleted just about everything I could. I deleted my cookies, form data, activeX, etc., my add-ons everything but my browsing history. Do I have to delete the browsing history again? You don't have CCleaner installed to do there is a delete History checkbox in there?Ok, well I deleted my browsing history and it worked. Everything is gone but when I tried my browsing history after I deleted it, it worked. My question is why does it do that? Why do I have to keep deleting my browsing history? Is there anyway I can get around it? Is there anyway I can keep my browsing history w/o deleting it because its a pain because I lose all my sites and files.

Solve : edit index.html at server filezilla chrome file type?

Answer»

When I right click to edit index.html (somehow is a chrome file type) it opens as untouchable browser image.  How can I edit my index.html at the server ? [using Firezilla]Firezilla is just an FTP client, right?  So, it's just a tool to upload and download to/from the server, it's not a tool to edit your HTML files.  To edit your files, you need to either do that on your PC and then upload them to the server or use a web-based editor provided by your web hosting service, where you would LOG in to your account with them and use a tool such as the cPanel provided by many hosting services. Tx, when I was trying CORE ftp le which I gave up on, it appeared I could just click on index.html and change the html... probably fooling myself as the reasdon I gave up was because th servber wasn't responding to my changes !.. In my language I think you are saying keep a library of my html pages in folders on my pc then upload them when changed... I'll try that... still bewildered as to how they become chrome type files.  Nonetheless will try and tx.When you say "chrome file type", do you mean the Chrome web browser, or what?

Quote

That's correct.

As I said in a previous post, you can edit your web pages online via your web browser by using the cPanel interface if your hosting service provides cPanel.  To see how this works, see http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=drPp8_pswV0Filezilla lists the index.html as "Chrome HTML DOCUMENT" under the heading "File type".  I'm not running the Chrome browser or any Chrome products.  Thanks for the you tube tip I'll watch.. for now I just "save as" my notepad html document in my client side of Firezilla, and when i click on firezilla it notices index.html has changed and auto asks me if I want to update at the server (BLESS it)... click ok and its at the server, then click on my website, refresh and its done, all in about 5 seconds.  Never diagnosed why core ftp le LET me down.. is it unreliable with windows OS ? Quote from: haz on February 12, 2012, 03:13:53 AM
Filezilla lists the index.html as "Chrome HTML document" under the heading "File type".  I'm not running the Chrome browser or any Chrome products.

At some time in the past the html file association on your system has been registered to Google Chrome.

Solve : Settings and Files Messed up after Unplug?

Answer»

Hi! So my settings and files get messed up every time I use my computer after unplugging it (unplugging = while computer is off). When I start it up, I get this:

Please ENTER SETUP to recover BIOS setting

Press F1 to run SETUP

Press F2 to load default values and continue

I press F2 (I have no idea what anything in the setup means, I'm an idiot on computers) and I can use it normally except there are a bunch of visual changes (theme, other things) and missing files, or at least I think so; all games I've tried won't start or will start and have many things missing and not work.

After Googling this a bit it seems like my battery is failing and I need to get a new one. I can do that, but meanwhile how do I get back my things? When this has HAPPENED before I just did a system restore, but this time there aren't any restore points so I guess I'm stuck. One time I remember finding something that worked, it was typing something in the command prompt but I can't find how to do that anymore... so I'm  here.

Is there a topic on here showing how to get specs and what to show?

Solve : 3 vista PC can connect to the internet but not to each other?

Answer»

I have 3 PCs on a network (2 wire modem, router, and switch).  All were able to connect to each other and share files with no problems, and now they can connect to the internet but not to each other.  Nothing in the physical network (cabling, router settings, etc.) has changed.

PC1 is Vista Home Premium and hosts our QUICKBOOKS and Xactimate network versions and stores our shared files.
PC2 and PC3 are both Vista Business.

All computers have the same users/passwords configured on them.  All have network discovery, file sharing, public folder sharing, and printer sharing on and password protected sharing and media sharing off.  All have the same workgroup and are set to "private" network.  All can access the internet with no problem.  All have folders shared.

PC1 can access files and folders on PC2 and PC3 without any issue.

Neither PC2 or PC3 can access PC1 unless they are in safe mode with networking support.  I have also tried a "clean boot" using msconfig and neither can connect to PC1.  When attempting to connect from the network map I get a log on box.  When I enter any correct username or password for the accounts that are the same on both machines, I get "logon unsuccessful..."  (Before it would connect without even asking for a username/password since I am logged in using an account that exists on that MACHINE).  When I attempt to connect using the previously MAPPED network drive (which is showing a red x as disconnected) I get a logon prompt as well which says "Unknown username or incorrect password."

I have tried a lot of suggestions that I have found for people having similar issues, including changing the local security settings\local policies\security options\Network Security: LAN Manager Authentication level to "send LM & NTLM - use NTLMv2 session security if negotiated" (done in the registry on the vista home machine).

All 3 PCs have McAfee Security Center installed and I have tried disabling the firewall and McAfee completely with no success.

Any help would be much appreciated.  I really need to get everything in working order again.Did you happen to disable McAffee on all 3 PC's and re-boot them ? ?
It has to be something in the new security settings since you stated it used to work...Yes.  Same thing happens.  I actually did a clean boot with nothing but microsoft services running at startup on all 3 and still can't access PC1 from PC2 or PC3.  It seems like it must be a Vista thing since it keeps saying incorrect username/password, even with a clean boot, but works in safe mode with networking and the vista business computers can't access the vista home computer. If it works OK in safemode with networking then something has changed on 1 of the 3 PC's...
You MAY want to check all 3 and see whats loading at startup...and 1 or more of the 3 may be infacted...
Thats where i'd start at least.Turns out that one of the routers or switch was causing the problem.  I cycled the power on the the 2wire and the router and the switch and now everything works!  It was probably the 2wire because i had reset the other devices previously with no result. Good news INDEED...

Did this issue occur only after you reinstalled Windows on your laptop? If so... Its probably a software issue.

**************I THINK I MAY HAVE FOUND A SOLUTION!****************
I got some help from another user on a different forum.

She told me to check my audio drivers. I had three, TWO ATI High def audio drivers and one VIA High def audio

My conclusion is that the two ATI's were fighting echother for the information causing the crash, I disabled one and it works PERFECTLY(thus far) game used to crash sometimes at loading, 10 seconds into game play no more then 20 seconds.. I've been playing for about 3 hours now on all high settings, changin the resolution a couple times a minute trying to cause the crash. I'm unable to cause the crash.

CHECK YOUR AUDIO DRIVERS IN DEVICE MANAGER! If you have more than one DISABLE ONE AT A TIME AND TRY TO CAUSE THE CRASH!
Try this...Yep, it started happening after I reinstalled Windows. I have 2 audio drivers and I disabled one of them but I still seem to GET the black screen randomlyHave you downloaded the latest audio driver from your manufacturer's site?
Try disabling the other driver.

We might want to eliminate hardware errors at this point.
If you want to stress-test your system to check for errors you might want to use the following programs:
IntelBurnTest for your CPU: http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/Benchmarks/IntelBurnTest.shtml Run it on Standard, 1024MB, for 10 passes. If your system gets unstable in the process it will tell you.
Furmark for your Graphics card: http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/Benchmarks/FurMark.shtml Run the 720p benchmark. If your system gets unstable there will be artifacting on the screen or the picture will freeze.
MemTest86+ for your RAM: http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/Benchmarks/Memtest86-plus.shtml Run it for 10 passes. It will indicate if there is a read/write error if your RAM is faulty.

Solve : Grey Screen during internet surfing windows 7?

Answer»

Aspire x133
I bought an Acer computer about 1 1/2 ago with windows vista installed. It is a small profile desktop where the video card is built into the board.  I received windows 7 by mail as a free upgrade. After upgrading with Windows 7, my computer and especially my internet experience is UNSTABLE.

I will be online for a few minutes, and then get a grey screen. The problem can occur in different programs, but most likely when you are online using firefox or IE or doing something like watching a video clip. When I reboot, the problem reoccurs.

I sent this computer back two times to the manufacturer and they claim it is fine (they find no errors) , but the problem reoccurs. I also sent it to an independent computer repair place last week where they checked the system, reformatted the hard drive, reinstalled all software, but the problem continues. I WOULD like to know what the most likely issue is. In the past, I've personally reformatted the hard drive and tried installing Windows XP, Vista, and Windows 7, but the problem continues.

I'm thinking it may be a conflict between the video and the operating system. The video is an NVIDIA NForce MCP78692BGA. I guess could also be a bad motherboard, bad ram, or bad hard drive, or something else. I'm searching for what would be the most likely way to proceed. If you search on GOOGLE, there are other Acer users with the same computer with similar problems, no one seems to have a clear ANSWER. Can you please provide me with an answer??? The service manual for my PC is online at http://support.acer.com/acerpanam/Manuals/acer/2010/ServiceGuides/SG_Aspire_X1301_BOOK.pdf if that provides any helpful detail as system specs are in the back starting on pg 95.

Thank youThe MCP78 chipset has a GeForce 7025 as its onboard graphics, which is absolutely terrible by today's standards. Has issues with 1080p. I strongly suggest you upgrade it.
It would be ideal if you could get your hands on another working computer and swap out the parts individually to troubleshoot, of course.

Run http://www.memtest.org for 10 passes to check the stability of your RAM.
Run http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?197835-IntelBurnTest-The-new-stress-testing-program Intelburntest on Standard to check for CPU stability. Also works with AMD processors.
You can get a cheap HD 5450 on newegg for testing (and upgrade):
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814125314

Does the entire screen suddenly turn grey? Does it always happen when you are doing something video-intensive?
Windows 7 and its flowery Aero graphics effects will tax an older system like yours.

File: \windows\system32\winload.exe
Status:  Oxc000000f
Info: The selected entry could not be LOADED because the application is missing or corrupt.
Any one have knowledge on how to fix problem?
Help is appreciated.
Many thanks.
Do you have the original install disc? Can you reinstall Windows 7.

I hate to be the barer of bad tidings but if your were to google "Acer Aspire 5532 laptop problems"  You would find you aren't alone. It would SEEM people have had nothing but problems with this model.  I am sure that is not what you want to hear.  I would suggest you google  just that and possibly someone has had the same problem has found the solution.  I don't know how old your laptop is or if it is still under WARRANTY but would maybe try to contact the manufacturer.

Go into Computer>System Properties>Device manager click on Sound, Video and see if there are any red question marks or exclamation marks that might indicate a problem.  Might  Right click and try updating driver.. First of all... Please don't panic.
An easier WAY to get to Device Manager(Click to enlarge the picture)

You can always get drivers from your MANUFACTURER's website, so that shouldn't be a problem.
It is highly unlikely that a computer would have its drivers spontaneously uninstall, though... Can you recall anything you did that may be related to this incident? It Says That Its Running Properly And That It Is Up To Date, No I Cant Recall Doing Anything To Mess My Computer Up But It Might Have Been Someone Else In My House Theres Like 5 Different People Who Use This Home Computer Im Jus Trying To Fix What Someone Broke But It Looks Like Its Not Possible  Question: would a system restore, if it is available for use,  be worth a try in this case? Why capitalise each word ? ?

Have you asked the others what they may have done ? ?

Not that you'll get an HONEST answer but it's worth a try. Quote from: AlexisChaves on December 17, 2011, 11:24:22 AM

Always makes me wonder when someone says it was working fine and now it isn't.  Have you checked all your connections?  Did something get bumped or put in the wrong audio jack somehow? Now for the stupid question.  The volume didn't get turned down? You said speakers so I am assuming some external speakers not monitor speakers. It could be something simple. How Do I Check My Connections ? And No I Have Checked The Volume Over And Over And If The Volume Was Down Plugging In Headphones Shouldnt Mess Up Videos Follow the wire connected to the speaker to the back or front of the computer audio port. The circle around the computer audio port is usually green where it plugs in. I am just going from memory. The only other thing is I think you said you don't have your Setup software for your sound card.  Are you able to tell what brand of sound card you have or is it onboard sound which means it is directly built into the MOTHERBOARD? Might need a new sound card. Quote

I Found What You Were Talking About But I Think Its In The Motherboard

Solve : 2 HDD's on 1 PC?

Answer»

So i've got 2 hard drives/4 partitions. One is 160 gig and the other is 80 gig. I hadn't used the PC in a few months and there were around 60 updates to download and install. The 160 is my main HDD. I went to update and now its stuck in an endless reboot loop. Windows says its configuring Stage 3 of 3, but nothing ever happens. It just reboots its self and goes thru the PROCESS again. I was able to SUCCESSFULLY update the SMALLER HDD. I just did a few at a time with it. Hopefully someone can help me recover this, its somewhat new and has most of my programs and files. ThanksWhat do you MEAN, you "updated" the smaller HDD? Windows is only installed on one HDD, right?

Solve : Question on how to make volume option...?

Answer»

I have a question on how to go about MAKING the volume control option on the taskbar reappear.  Earlier, the computer froze up and I had to restart it.  Everything POPPED up except for the volume (sound) option on the taskbar.  Thank you in advance.http://support.microsoft.com/kb/319095

Method 1: Add the Volume icon

To add the Volume icon to the notification AREA of your computer, follow these steps:Click Start, and then click Run.

Type mmsys.cpl in the Open box, and then click OK:

Click to select the Place volume icon in the taskbar check box.

Click OK.
Perhaps I worded this issue wrong.  How do I place the volume mixer into the taskbar on the bottom RIGHT of the SCREEN?  Thank you in advance.http://www.vista4beginners.com/Volume-Mixer-icon-on-taskbar

Solve : error loading operating system vista?

Thank you also Geek-9PM,
I see that you are referring to D drive (E drive, etc), this is the case indicated on the Seagate website...the D drive is Matshita on mine but was able to run the Seatools for DOS which found no errors. Quote from: jdavidwik on December 11, 2011, 03:10:36 PM

The Seagate test is reliable.
You may have some hardware issue on the motherboard or BIOS. It may or may not be related to your former problem.

But before you give up, make sure THEE is no software issue. Like maybe a malware that HIDES itself until you are not looking.

A good independent AV is is the Alvira rescue disk. It can work even without a Internet connection.

Download Avira AntiVir Rescue System

No guarantee that it will fix your problem. But it is free.Thank you.

The Avira Rescue scan on All Files stops after scanning 260 files, 81 directories.  Internet connectivity should be possible but Avira indicates that it is not (re. updates). No PROBLEMS (0 infected, warnings, SUSPICIOUS) detected. Is this pointing to a bad/missing partition?Ran Avira rescue scan on Boot Sectors Only. This shows two warnings:
[IO error on file]Master boot sector (disk/dev/sr0)
[Error reading file]Boot sector (/dev/sdal)Any opinions on using the Ultimate Boot CD for Windows- PartedMagic application, as it seems a partition issue might be present.Hello!

If the drive passes it's vendors diagnostic tools, perhaps a repair install of vista might be in order? You can do this via the installation CD.

It will keep your data but reload any system files.
