Solve : Not receiving updates? (Help)?

Answer»

Topic.

I have Windows Vista Service Pack 1.

On April 12, 2011, my Windows 7 laptop received 23 important updates. It took awhile, but, I installed them all.

However, my Windows Vista desktop COMPUTER hasn't gotten any Windows Updates for April 2011 at all yet. The last update I got was 4/8/2011 and was DEFINITION Update for Windows Defender - KB915597 (Definition 1.101.1074.0)

My Windows Update settings are FINE. I have it to Install updates automatically (Recommended) Every day at 3:00 AM.

My Vista desktop computer still checks for updates, but doesn't get any updates.

I have no IDEA what the issue is now, but, I'm getting slightly tired of this and it's getting to the point where I might stop caring and just not care if it updates ever again.

I'd really appreciate any help anyone here can give me with this.

Thanks.

P.S.: I do have one update I haven't installed on my Vista desktop computer. However, it's Windows Vista Service Pack 2 (KB948465). I DO NOT want to install this because I have installed it once before and it slowed down my computer significantly. My Vista machine does not show any updates past that date...i'll do some more checking on this.Nevermind.

Updates showed up for me today when I got on a little after 3:00 pm in my area.

23 updates again. Once again, it took awhile, but, I got them all installed.

Hopefully this won't happen again.

If it does, I'll either make another topic or bump this one.

P.S.: Seriously... Vista sucks.  QUOTE from: AlwaysScrewed on April 15, 2011, 03:25:41 PM

I'm confused. How does a larger interval between updates translate to the Operating System sucking?

Solve : Windows Firewall Question - User specific rules?

Answer»

I'd like to ask if I can have different Windows Firewall profiles for different users on the computer.

For example, lets say I have user 1 and I want to configure all access without restrictions.

For use 2, I want to BLOCK all access to 172.*.*.*, both ways.

It seems I am not able to find how I can configure the Windows Firewall this way.  Please let me KNOW if it's possible, or if PEOPLE user a thirdparty APP for something like this.  Thanks.Try this sites

Solve : hp pavilion p6214y hangs?

Im trying to reload the windows 7 os on the computer.  At times, the computer turns on, shows the hp splash screen and then hangs, and at other times it does the whole 'Press a key to boot from the DVD' and then shows the install screen and the AGREEMENT screen, and then hangs.

I THOUGHT initially its BAD RAM that is CAUSING this behavior, but even after trying all the sticks ONE by one, it still does the same thing.

Solve : Help Please microsoft excel and word product key?

Answer»

When someone SENDS me an e-mail attachment thats from excel or word it wont let me print without a product key code. I have excel and word, i can make forms print edit etc. as long as i OPEN it and it's not from my e-mail. How do i print it when someone e-mails it to me. When i bought this computer 2 yrs ago excel and word came with it never had a product key code. where do i find it?  Buy from an authorized reseller.

By the way, how do you print the spreadsheet or document? Can you explain it further here?Computers are often supplied with a trial of word/excel which will expire after about 30-60 days.  After that you will need to buy the software.Without details, it would APPEAR that there is some odd issue here. Do the e-mails come from a trusted place?  Are you able to load the spreadsheet? The product key may be a key for the spreadsheet, not the Excel program. Maybe a co-worker is sending you a spreadsheet that has proprietary data and requires a license to print it. Do you think that may be the case here?
if it was previously installed on your computer then the product should still be on it unless you have reinstalled the operating system

Solve : Help with Partitioning on laptop?

Answer»

Today I installed Windows 7 Ultimate. I had a couple of partitions and I deleted all of them and came out with what showed 1 drive of 690 gb space. I created a NEW 30gb partition and installed windows onto it. Now I open up my COMPUTER to CHECK everything, and all it shows is the 30gb windows partition and not the 660gb other partition.
What did I do wrong and how can I fix this? Please help!

You only created one partition. You can use Disk Management to create another partition in the unallocated space.Just to expand on the above answer, unallocated space will REMAIN "unallocated" until it is formatted. You can either do as suggested above and use Disk Management or you can use a third party app if you prefer (such as Easeus Partition Manager - http://www.partition-tool.com/) to create additional partitions. There's no advantage to one over the other - whatever you're most comfortable with.

Solve : I believe I messed with the registry and now problems.?

Answer»

The AV went in right after SP2 installed.  My immediate problem is that I cannot get the front 3.5 headphone jack working.  The rear one works fine but not the front.  This is kind of a big deal for me.  In properties the driver is working and it's at location 2 but no sound.

I went to SoundMax website but they include Norton cleanup tools with the driver download.  This is the software I think I had before.  Then, I went to CNET and downloaded the SoundMax file but it opens a CNET download application that I don't want.  I check in device manager to see what audio card I have and everything just says windows drivers installed.  I think this is the line from device manager that I need something that works:

PNP Device ID   HDAUDIO\FUNC_01&VEN_11D4&DEV_1882&SUBSYS_80861004&REV_1003\4&327B71E6&0&0201
^^^^^^  Forget all of that post.  ^^^^^

I can get all audio through my monitor, Windows sounds and Youtube, through the back port.  But, through the front jack I only get Windows sounds and no Youtube. This your Motherboard and all specs and drivers. http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/motherboards/desktop-motherboards/desktop-board-dq45ek.html

Computer runs awesome.  Thanks SuperDave and Kimsland.

I think it runs way better then before.  The Windows updates are still coming in.  I didn't research Kimsland's post about that yet because I just got the sound working.  I thought that code purple was the end.  I researched it a little before I posted about it and saw the fixes but had absolutely no idea what to do.  Or how to use the fix advice online.

Well you just decided to go ahead and 'factory reset' it, so it WOULD have been nice if you had announced this to Superdave first, at which time he likely would have advised you of your options. One possibly being that there was no need.

Quote from: Doug on November 28, 2011, 06:44:16 PM
Well.  I had to restore to original factory condition.

Since you went ahead and did this without the support member's advice, then you can see how much was involved in re-setting it back up again. All Windows updates, Antivirus, Java, Printer and other hardware devices, Office?, many other Apps you want re-installed?

What recovery tool should I use?  Start Up repair?  System restore?  Windows complete PC restore?  Windows memory diagnostic tool?  Command prompt?  Recovery Manager?

Edit:  I see you wrote whatever method you choose.

This is where it went a little strange.
Superdave was talking about downloading and running a Rescue CD
You were talking about Windows complete PC restore, which is not part of the Rescue CD linked to.
The options you were speaking of MUST have come from a HP Recovery CD, or a HP Recovery Image?

How exactly did you re-install Windows?

I was just saying thank you.  I try and do what I can on my own(as you can probably incline from how I got myself into this situation).  You guys help with the INFO in the posts in reply to my questions and I search on my own to see what I can learn and do.  I kind of look at replys as which PATHS to follow and get me headed in the right direction.  He posted some info and I did what I could and when I could go no farther I have to ask more questions.  I learn a heck of a lot.  If I would post everytime I don't know how to do something this thread would be so long.  And he did write use what method I wanted and to follow directions.

Specifically, the other options on the CD didn't do anything.  I'll upload the CD I burned somewhere.  There's a line under properties that reads "drweb-livecd-600."  After this maybe the partion did work?  And with the CD I used there was a line, as I posted, -Windows complete PC restore.  I should go back and change the I had to part to I choose to.  Doug that's all fine. Anyway you also said its working better than before now
You don't need to upload the CD, we believe you.

Ultimately, the forum is there to freely help solve members computer issues. However way that happens is all good.

"I believe I messed with the registry and now problems.
Obviously the registry is a critical area and although you used "registry programs from MajorGeeks" (a trusted source) its not something that should be played with.
I will SAY that I have used CCleaner http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner
And also the Registry Cleaner, part of free CCleaner, on thousands of computers and never had an issue not once.
So this may be the best 'user friendly' registry cleaner of them all.

Solve : Partition or not??

Hi guys

I just got myself a new computer OS Windows 7, with a 750 Gb hard drive in one single C drive. I am wondering whether or not i should CREATE a partition? If so, what size should the partition be?

Thank you
Depends on what you would use it for!Partitioning is a personal choice. I like a lot of partitions on my drives, but that's just me. You make the call.I heard somewhere from people more knowledgeable than me that a partition adds speed to your PC. Is that a true statement?NoOk thanks guys.

yep
I'd be interested to know what reasons were given for partitions speeding up an hardrive.Hi again

These are the links to articles in which they mentioned multiple partitions could in deed speed up your PC. Keep in mind that compare to you I am just a layman, so maybe at somepoint I have misunderstood some of their EXPLANATIONS. Anyhow thanks for your help, it comes in pretty handy.

In some cases it can reduce the load time for some programs. But it can also do just the opposite. On average, the advantage is slight. But if you want to win a speed contest with your friends, partitioning is one way to tweak your system to give you a slight advantage. Quote from: Geek-9pm on January 15, 2011, 12:56:35 PM

You are the one that made a broad sweeping statement, not I. The OP has already stated that he found references and you came back and ignored his research with a broad statement that can not possibly be true. It is a gross generalization.
He is a quotation from a respected professional. It is reasonable, does not make broad claims and explains what the issues are and why they could be significant.

Using Windows XP > Computer Setup and Maintenance
Best practices for partitioning a hard disk
Published: June 6, 2005
By Mitch Tulloch

I'm often asked, "What's the best way to partition your hard drive?" Typically, I answer, "What do you mean by 'best'? Are you looking for the best performance? Best reliability? Best usability?" There's no single answer to how you should partition hard disks on a computer running Windows XP. What I can offer are some suggestions BASED on my personal experience.

Depending on your budget and goals, you can choose the solution that works best for your system. In this column, I'll focus on three areas where your partitioning scheme can really make a DIFFERENCE:
• Organizing your work
• Safeguarding your data
• Boosting your computer's performance
He work is found on http://Microsoft.com and many others echo his findings.

Performance is often equated to both CPU speed and disk response time for a given set of operations the would include HDD seek time and read and write completions. The average user perceives performance improvement as a speed improvement. Like saying "My car goes faster on good road, but not as fast on a bad road."
On the contrary, YOU are claiming that multiple partitions will increase speed. Either provide documentation for that claim or accept / acknowledge that you are posting nonsense. Please do not continue arguing unless you can document your claim.

Solve : low Physical memory?

Hi Allan, I was more concerned that this machine appeared to be running slower than I remembered.
I wanted to clean it up , file and program wise, and give it to someone who is unable to buy a laptop.
EXCUSE THE SLOW RESPONSE, TOOK A WHILE TO FIGURE OUT HOW TO REPLY.....

Herb Wipe it out. I think it's the F11 key at boot.If you are giving away the system perhaps you should format and do a clean install.Allan
That might be a bit BEYOND me capabilities............
Not sure that I have the system installation disks like I had on an older Toshiba... that one had several disks that did what you are talking about, formatted the disk and reinstalled to original condition..
I'm game, if I have the software that you might be talking..
I don't want to waste your time with my novice status.. but am willing to try if you suggest...
HerbAnd what happens if you press F11 at boot as suggested above?Usually, you only have to add more memory in ORDER for your computer to speed up. But sometimes, your computer slows down due to bad files in your registry. There might be missing or corrupted registry files that’s why your computer is very slow. The registry is a very important part of your operation system. And each time you install and uninstall a program, your registry gets congested. It also becomes full of errors. You may have thought that you already cleaned your registry well but you may have not. So, it is better if you will get a good software that can clean your registry and free it from corrupted files. Solve : Unable to map Win7 drives from XP...?

Answer»

Hey all, hope everyone is well and had a happy holiday season!  Been a while since I posted...

Have an annoying problem - Googling turns up a about a zillion possible solutions, but none of the ones I have TRIED have worked.  Hoping the geniuses here can assist as usual with a no-nonsense, working solution.

Problem:  I cannot map from XP SP2 to any of my 2 Win7 Home Premium local drives
What: 2 laptops, both on same workgroup

I can successfully map to my XP laptop drives from within Win7 Home Premium.  I just cannot do the reverse, from XP to Win7.

Both machines are current with all MS patches/updates.

This seems to be a common issue but with so many possible solutions I don't know what to try next BEYOND what I have done so far.  No real luck searching here as well...

tia and cheers,
-lestatar

Hi,

Go to http://support.microsoft.com/kb/922120

This is a Microsoft hotfix which must be added to every XP computer on the network. The hotfix only works with SP3. The protocol is called LLTD (Link Layer Topology Discovery).

I installed it on my COMPUTERS and it works fine.Hey durgadurga, thanks for that - I will read up on it more, though yes, I have yet install SP3 on that XP laptop.

More clarification on my problem.

Under XP/Windows Network, I can see the target Win7 machine.  I can also see the 2 shared drives [yes, I am sharing the root of Win7 C: and D:, but I am on protected home network and see no issue with this].

I just cannot map to the Win7 drives.  INSUFFICIENT rights error.

Of course, both laptops are:
- on the same network
- using different user account names from each device
- full sharing and rights and permissions have been assigned to the drives under Win7
- I also believe Win7 firewall is setup properly...

Any more things to try folks?  But I will give that hotfix a shot as well.

Thanks again!
-lestatar
Well, no joy.

Installed the LLTD as suggested [had to do it manually as it turns out my XP netbook already had SP3 installed and there is a known bug with this Hotfix installer].

Installed successfully, made sure LLTD was enabled then rebooted XP.  To correct my post, I actually am able to MAP the target Win7 drives, but clicking on them in Explorer returns this error:

X:\ is not accessible
Access is denied

I have been mapping drives on my home networks for years without issue - until now and target Win7 drives.

Help please!!!
-lestatar

I may be wrong, but at one thine MS was telling people not to map the actual drive. Instead, you make a folder on the drive to  share. The XP machine then can map the folder as a virtual drive.
Also, many new programs do not need a network resource mapped to a drive. Are you using programs that require a network share to present itself as a virtual local drive?

The point I am trying to make is that there maybe an acceptable workaround. Or, in your case, maybe the workaround will not do the job.
Drive mapping problems are a common complaint in windows networking.

Drive-Mapping Problems PcMag

EDIT: Cannot connect to Windows 7 sharesHey Geek, thanks for responding.

Indeed, this appears to be a significant issue.  Yes, I am aware that mapping the root of drives is not always recommended from a security perspective, but I am on a fairly secure internal network - I am the only one in the house.

This is really a pain.  I don't have any apps that need to run across my network from XP calling to Win7 - I just want my XP netbook to be able to fully access both C: and D: drives without having to go to the trouble to map specific folders into a Public Win7 share.  Is this so much to ask?  Also, theoretically, this type of workaround would mean that every time I created a new folder under Win7 that I want my XP boxes to use, I have to remember to drag that new folder into the Public share?

Ridiculous!

I am discovering that under Win7, the roots of drives are protected.  Hey!  Great!  If people need that, awesome.

I don't.  It should be a clearly explained option and I should also be able to fully disable that type of security if I choose to.

This is a major hassle.  Like I said, I understand I can drag folders into the public Win7 share [which does seem to work though I need to test more] but this is so annoying and I guess not so much the point.

Homegroup apparently will only work between Win7 machines.   This Homegroup thing in Win7 seems like a terrible idea - I am sure there are millions of mixed Win OS networks out there, especially personal LANs.

I should be given the option to fully control and access my Win7 machine exactly how I want to do it.

Sorry, this is turning into a rant, but I am so frustrated here.  This is such a basic thing - I have set up numerous XP networks before [even using old, mixes OSe environments like 95, 98SE and ME] and never encountered this sort of roadblock in terms of mapping and allowing full drive access.

Really hoping some networking Win7 wizard can help me out here...

Thanks again and cheers!
-les

EDIT: btw, thanks for the links as well, but I have already tried most if not all the suggestions with no joy.  My frustration knows no bounds here...

I am seriously considering blowing away Win7 Home Premium and going back to XP SP3.

hi lestatar,
I realize that my first post missed the point, I simply did not understand your problem.

I have a workgroup network with one Win7 Professional 64-bit and two Win XP SP3 machines. I have no problem mapping my Win7 C: drive on any of the XP computers. I will provide you with more details of my setup hoping that it may help you figure out your problem:

1. All my computers have accounts with administrator privileges. I read somewhere that if one gets "Access is denied," the first recommendation is to try using an Admin account.

2. I have Panda Internet Security 2010 on all machines (no Windows firewall)

3. Win7 Control Panel > Network and Sharing Center > Advanced sharing settings > Turn On password protected sharing.

4. To enable Win7 C: drive sharing  go to Start > Computer > right click Local Disk (C:) > left click Properties > click Sharing > click Advanced Sharing > tick Share this folder > click OK

5. When mapping from Win XP you will be asked for Win7 User Name and Password.

I hope it may help you somehow. Good LuckHeya durga...No worries and thanks so much for continuing to assist.

Unfortunately, I have already done all of the steps you outlined.  With the exception of your Panda firewall [am using Win firewall on both], I have my stuff setup that way.

Still no joy...

Solve : Freeze- Reboot- Freeze- Same Cycle. :(?

Answer»

So far my computer has done quite fine in the past on gaming and such, well, not really, in the past months now my PC has suddenly started freezing while playing games, the first time would just freeze the app, 'exiting' out temporarily with Ctrl+Alt+Delete and clicking 'Task Manager' and quitting the game, nevertheless, will work, but there will be black bars where shadows/transparency/opaqueness should be on windows, and where the frozen game window would be, somehow seemingly shrunk on the screen to a size of I'd say, 12x12 or something, all covered by black as well, after quitting the Application, re-starting and trying again, just after a few short minutes of gameplay (Managed to snap a pic of it), the computer audio will skip and stutter repeated 1-2 ms of the currently playing audio, the computer will respond to NOTHING, Not even Ctrl+Alt+Delete, I could tell the system had seriously bunked itself, because when Plugging in a USB device or whatnot (Like my Camera), the light would not come on or give me an indication it was being charged in any manner... So at that point this leaves me to click the ACPI Reset button, and force-restart my PC...

Think it's done yet? Let's go further into what happens upon restart.

The system would turn on, all fans, USB/Mice, etc, all OPTIONAL, this would only last about estimated 1 second, and then would instantly power off again, it gives a whirry/whine when it does this, I have yet to see why my Computer does this at all, and upon powering back on, works fine...

This happens quite often, leaving me to believe my PC has some PSU fault, I've checked but this PSU has been good (hopefully) since brought back in '07, this is a custom computer, no warranty, and the place I brought it from closed down, so I can't ask them or whatnot... you know...

Anyways, The least I expect is for someone to atleast give me an answer for why my PC might be doing this?

Checked by Temps with nTune (Nvidia's built-in software fan/clock controlling software), Temps are fine, ranging only to a Max of 72*C, not bad?

So I'm not sure overheating might be an issue, unless I've OVERLOOKED something.

I'm running Windows 7 x64 bit, Nvidia 250 GTS, 4 GB of RAM, and Water-cooled CPU cooling, so CPU shouldn't be a problem- BIOS settings report it at 40*CI'd run Memtest86 on this just to make sure you dont have a memory issue. I had a Pentium 4 2.66Ghz act the same way with two kingston 512MB Ram sticks and found out that one of the sticks had issues with a range between 540MB and 640MB of the 1GB available. Just as you said windows with black boxes and LOTS of freeze ups. I found this using that memtest86. Contacted Kingston and they RMA'd me a new stick and then both sticks worked fine together. I later found out that this was a risk you take in not buying matched pairs 5 years ago. For about $10 more you could get matched pairs that were tested to behave with each other, or you can save money and take chances with unmatched pairs bought individually at the time. I'd run Memtest86 on this just to make sure you dont have a memory issue. It seems Memtest86 on my Machine is messed up or something, upon Memtest executing, when asked to reboot, upon reboot I get the following message:

Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might have caused this problem.

File: Memtest.exe is missing or corrupted.

And I can't run memtest, if I try to manually execute it Windows says it cannot be run in Win32 mode. :/
Help?MemTest should be ran from a bootable CD....not inside Windows. Quote from: patio on January 13, 2011, 04:25:49 PM
MemTest should be ran from a bootable CD....not inside Windows.

Then perhaps I should copy the whole memtest file and it's components, and PUT them on a flash drive and run them on the next BOOT then, eh?
How would I get it to work anyways? Would I have to run it through DOS or something?

Sorry, I don't have the Windows 7 CD and I'd rather not waste time waiting for Windows to load, just to run a Memtest.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but blame Microsoft.
the last Memtest I ran when I was running Linux on my machine said half my memory was bad, and it was brand-new RAM! :/

Of course, running memtest via the dual-boot options while before loading linux or windows, Attempting memtest from there claims 'too small memory in (ex.) 07x0E.  Press any key to continue...'.

Ok, just for the heck of it, ran Memtest, no problems found, this is new RAM anyways, I recently tried USED RAM and that just corrupted the memory Pfn list or whatever windows crud...

any ideas anyone?
Also if this
might be of any use; this freezing of the system so far only happens the most in Fallout New Vegas...
Although, app crashes are on a regular daily basis for me. along with hangers...

Can someone tell me if this may be a hardware issue of some kind?
I know only one time, after a few seconds of my system freezing Ctrl+Alt+Del finally responded and the system came back to life...

Although this is mostly not related, I'll post it anyways... Back when I was young,
my extra HDD I filled with Windows Movie Maker Vids and games, started to go bad. It clicked, and after a few minutes of gameplay it would freeze, a few minutes or 30 secs later, it would resume, but only to dead fault straught back to a BSoD... which I haven't gotten any from my games...yet. Unfortunetly before you asked, my father kicked it hard in the front and smashed the front my old PC inward...

Hope I atleast provided some ADDITIONAL info, if I missed something please don't hesitate to tell me!
Thank You!!

If it was running and now it stopped for no reason there are three principal areas you need to investigate.
Could be:
1. The device has become damaged. to verify, try it on another computer.
OR
2. Some kind of software update failed to install properly.
OR
3. A virus has attacked you system. Not likely, but need to check.

Question. Does you iPod have digital Rights Management?

Solve : Reg Cleaner Program?

Answer»

Hello,

I have switched back to the Mac for the passed 3 years so I am not in touch with the Windows world anymore. Recently, a friend of mine has a lot of problems with her Vista Laptop, I took a look at it and I found out the registry is all MESSED up. I don't trust any of those online registry cleaner stuff, so I am wondering what is a GOOD, trustworth registry cleaner program, it would be a plus if it's free. Any recommendations?

Thanks. What leads you to believe that the registry is "all messed up"?

Most registry cleaners do more harm than good. However, if you want to clean junk files from the registry check out CCleaner. It's a more gentle cleaner than most. It also cleans all of the crap from the hard drive. You can download it here:
http://www.ccleaner.com/Registry cleaners will not fix a registry. They really don't do much at all, in fact, except cause problems. It sounds to me LIKE you don't KNOW what you are doing - so I strongly urge you not to make things worse.

Why not TELL us what the specific problems are and let's see if we can help?

Hello everyone, I am new to this forum but I am not new to a computer.  Lately, for about a week and a few days, my computer has been acting up.  First, I was receiving random pop ups that included silly THINGS such as this:

found looking for pizza
found looking for pizza

looking for pizza!

So I told a friend of mine who is pretty smart when it comes to computers and she told me to download Malware Bytes thing that eventually caused those pop ups to stop, but now, lately, I've been getting these Window Security Alerts saying how my computer is INFECTED, and every time I try to open something that has anything to do with the computer such as PAINT, NOTEPAD, or Microsoft Document, it'll SAY something like "Application cannot be executed.  The file wermgr.exe is infected.  I need help immediately.  Please respond as quickly as possible!Go here and follow the directions exactly and post a new thread there.

Solve : Is there any way for me to create a Vista DVD with backup files ??

Answer»

Hi all,

I installed a fresh Windows Vista SP2 and activated online with retail key. I also backed up 2 files: pkeyconfig.xrm-ms & tokens.dat. Now I'm thinking about the way how to ADD these two files in Vista DVD in order that it will automatically activate off-line in case of re-formatting Windows Vista in the future.

Does anyone who has experiences know how to create a DVD like this please ?

I created the folders OEM\$OEM$\$$\setup\SCRIPTS , put pkeyconfig.xrm-ms & tokens.dat in scripts folder and put OEM folder in sources folder from Vista SP2 DVD.

All I need is a .cmd FILE and where do I put a retail key ?

Thanks in advanceWe do not assist with BYPASSING Copyright safeguards.

You will need to activate each TIME you re-install Vista.

Solve : Retro-compatability?

Answer»

I've got the city building game "Zeus: MASTER of Olympus" on SOLD Out Software (they re-release very POPULAR old titles).

There's an expansion back "Poseidon: Master of Atlantis" which I'd really love to get (it has new buildings, new missions and, best of all: a MISSION editor). This expansion back hasn't been released by Sold Out Software, so only the original Sierra versions from years ago are on sale. I've bought a new laptop with Windows Vista, and of course this wasn't invented back then.

My copy of Zeus says that it works on Windows 95/98/Me/XP, but I've just installed it and PLAYED it on my new Vista laptop; no problem! I've managed to find a bundled copy of Zeus and Poseidon on Ebay, and it says that it runs on Windows 95/98/Me/XP too. (It won't mention Vista because Vista didn't exist when the product was made).

* If Zeus ran on Vista, then would the expansion pack Poseidon run on Vista?

* If Poseidon didn't run, then would there be a Vista compatability patch that I could download?

* If all else fails, then does anyone know where I could get a mission editor for Zeus? Please don't double post  alsmot evreything for XP will work on vista

Solve : How to find out what program you have uninstalled??

Answer»

I wanted to uninstal one program but accidentally uninstalled another program.  Is there any way to find out what that other program was?  My OS is vista home basic.Do a System Restore to the day before the uninstall.

All programs will be restored.

You must then uninstall the program that needs to be uninstalled.

start, All Programs, accessories, sytem tools and click System Restore.

Follow directions.

Good luckSystem Restore only deals with Windows system files so unless i'm mistaken the app will not be restored...you may however see it listed in Add/Remove Programs...
Then you can re-install it...I use XP pro.

System Restore does not uninstall programs but when we restore to a day before the the program was uninstalled,  the program will be there.

Also, any program that was installed after the restore DATE must be installed again.

The above has always worked for me.

Not just system programs are affected but also regular application programs.

It never hurts to run System Restore. Everything can be reversed to where it was before system restorePatio is correct.  I actually uninstalled two programs consecutively.  One was Epson printer software, the other one I do not know.  After a system restore to a time before the 2 uninstallations, Epson printer software is not restored.   So I suppose system restore only deals with Windows system files.  And programs installed after the restore point are still there, like Acronis in my case.

Patio, I only have programs and features in Control Panel and within that there's no add/remove programs.  There's only the option to uninstall/change/repair.  What else can be done? Programs & Features in Vista serves same purpose as Add\Remove in previous Windows versions.
You can try system restore to day before. It won't restore the program, but it'll restore your registry to the day before.
Then, open Registry Editor, navigate to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall
and you'll see list of all programs as of yesterday. There are just too many items in
HKEY_Local_Machine\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall
that I don't know what to make of it.

Is the most recent uninstallation placed on top?   I don't see  Epson printer software.I have recently done product recovery for my computer.  Is that why there are so many items in the registry under uninstall?Or is it the several system restores and undo that I did? What exactly is it that you need to re-install ? ?That is what I want to find out.
I intended to uninstall "Epson printer software" but accidentally uninstalled another program because I had single-click turned on instead of double-click.
I do not know what program it was that I unintentionally uninstalled. If it's so important program, how come, you can't see what's missing?I'm guessing it's between D and F....Broni,  there are too many programs listed in Programs and Features.  Just Epson has 9 items.

Patio,  I think it is anything above E and below B because after selecting Epson printer software by resting on it (single-click being enabled), I moved my pointer upwards to reach the uninstall button.   I must have rested a BIT in between to have caused another program being SELECTED instead.

Can anyone tell me the sequence of uninstalled programs listed in
HKEY_Local_Machine\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall?
Are the most recent uninstallation at the top of the page or at the bottom?  There are no dates listed.

That way I can concentrate my search to a particular area. Quote

Are the most recent uninstallation at the top of the page or at the bottom?

Unfortunately not. They're sorted by CLSID numbers.

You can get better look by running this...

Please download SystemLook from one of the links below and save it to your Desktop.
Download Mirror #1
Download Mirror #2

  • Double-click SystemLook.exe to run it.
  • Vista users:: Right click on SystemLook.exe, click Run As Administrator
  • Copy the content of the following BOX into the main textfield:
Code: [Select]:reg
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall /s
  • Click the Look button to start the scan.
  • When finished, a notepad window will open with the results of the scan.
Note: The log can also be found on your Desktop entitled SystemLook.txt

Solve : Hard drive format without installation CD?

Answer»

I've been trying to format the HARD drive on one of my computers, basically to get rid of all the clutter that has accumulated on it. I've already made back ups of all the data I want to save, but I can't find any of the installation restore CDs that came with it. I think the computer may have come with Windows already installed on it, without any installation CDs. Is it possible for me to format the hard drive without them, and if so how?

Here are my system specifications:

OS: Microsoft Windows XP
Media Centre Edition
Version 2002
Service pack 2
2.80 Ghz 1.00Gb of RAM

My conputer has 2 main drives or disks on it: HP_PAVILON (C:) and HP_RECOVERY(D:)

You probably didn't get any disks. That's why there's a recovery on partition D....so what am I supposed to do? I want to get rid of pretty much all the files and programs I've installed and return the computer to an 'as new' status. Quote

and return the computer to an 'as new' status
Are you not planning to install any OS on it?It came with Windows installed on it. I don't want to get rid of that because I can't reinstall it.I don't understand. How can you reformat hard drive, and leave Windows on, at the same time?I kind of just assumed it was possible.

To be honest I don't even really know what a hard drive is, or what it means to format one. I'm just looking for a way to get rid of *everything* that I've installed on the computer since I bought it. It's currently so slow as to be practically unusable. If you just want to restore your computer back to the state it was when you purchased it you just need to do a recovery from your recovery partition. Just do a search for "recovery" and it should give you the information on how to do it.see here:
 [edit] Recovery partitions
In recent years, bundled recovery CD-ROMs have become less common, as some OEM's are now utilizing hard drive partitions to store the recovery data. Accessing hard drive based system recovery is usually performed by pressing a specific key combination during or after the computer's POST. Partition based recovery systems are usually faster than their disc based counterparts since the data is directly on the hard drive and no disc swapping is needed. They can also be cheaper for the OEM because they do not need to ship recovery CDs with the computer, adding the price of creating them to the cost of the computer.

However, if the hard drive fails, is fully reformatted, or is replaced, the recovery partition will be lost. An application used to burn bootable recovery CDs or DVDs is sometimes offered in order to allow a backup of the recovery data.[4] For computers with Recovery Partitions, these recovery CDs can also sometimes be ordered directly from the OEM. If they are used to recover the system, the recovery partition can sometimes be recreated with the recovery CD as well.
On HP, you can access Recovery Partition by pressing F10 key at computer startup. Thanks for the help. I'll look into that tomorrow.Let us know.I sincerely hope that you're aware that after this procedure all your data abd programs will be gone.... Quote from: patio on August 03, 2008, 06:50:54 PM

Ok, I pressed F10 at setup, and was given 2 choices: either test (recommended) or run a recovery. I clicked on test, and was taken to 'PC-Doctor 5 for Windows PE'

From there I had 4 options:

Main Category - Basic Test
Advanced category - Hard Drive Test
                               - Optical Drive Test
                               - CPU and MEMORY Test

I clicked on Basic Test, and the PROGRAM ran for a few minutes. When it finished, this screen appeared:

Failed                       SMART short self test                         HD521-2W

Whoa - your hard drive just failed it's test. To CONFIRM, go to Samsung's site and look for their hard drive diagnostic software, download and run it. If you have a choice, run a "long" test.

You'll need to burn the .iso image file to a CD. Boot from the CD and follow the directions.

If you need a program to burn the .iso file, use this: http://isorecorder.alexfeinman.com/isorecorder.htmOK, I burned the ESTOOL program onto a CD, then booted from that CD at start up. I ran the full diagnostic. When the test finished, I was told that an error had been found and that I should run ERASE HDD, after making a back up of everything. I had already made backups of all the data I wanted to save, so I ran ERASE HDD.

When that completed, I restarted the computer and went to the boot menu. 3 options appeared:

SM-HL-DT-STDVDRRW GSA-H2OL (I belive this is the CD in the CD drive)
3M-SAMSUNG SP2504C (I think this boots from the main hard drive, like usual)
Ut165 USB2FlashStorage 0.00

When I tried the first 2 options with the ESTOOL CD still in the computer, lots of lines of text went PAST really quickly and then I was taken to the ESTOOL program.

I took the CD out and tried the first 2 options again. They both took me to a blank screen with just a few lines of text:

Disk error
Press any key to restart

(After pressing a key)

Reboot and Select proper Boot device
or Insert Boot Media in
selected Boot device and

Windows = "files and programs."

I am unclear as to the status of the hdd - good or bad? Run the diagnostic again.

Erase probably did delete everything on the hdd - including Windows and the Recovery Partition.

If this were mine, at this point, I would: a) call HP and order recovery disks, b) buy a new hdd, if there is any doubt about its status.I ran the diagnostic again, this time it said there were no errors. I'll use some recovery disks to load Windows OS onto the hard drive. Thanks for all the help. Quote from: tweedytl on August 07, 2008, 02:08:21 PM

Don't think that will work...good luck!Well here it is 2011 and I am having same issue. Glad I found this thread! I have a HP a1310n. Inspired by this thread, I went back to original documents received with desktop. It instructed me to create system recovery discs as follows:

Windows XP: Start > All Programs > PC Help & Tools >HP PC Recovery CD-DVD Creator. It is recommended to use DVD which I happed to have. This requires 2 discs. If CD used, it requires 16.

I am now making recover discs and will report back.

I have no doubt this messed up computer will attempt to report bad hard drive to me but I doubt I have a bad hard drive. It is just a mess!

Ok burned disc 1, HP instructed me to label it disc 1, Recovery.

After burning the discs I will attempt to to do a Full System Recovery on current recovery hard drive. If unsuccessful, I have the discs.

I will start a new thread with this post. Just wanted this info connected with this thread since it came up high when I did a Google search.

Solve : All my desktop data gone after lots of bleeping, please help me get it back!?

Answer»

Hello everyone, several months ago my HP pavillion dv-6 laptop started MAKING bleeping noises as I booted it up. sometimes it would even boot up very slowly.  After a couple of weeks of this bleeping, a found that all my personal data on the desktop was gone after I logged into my user account. and the background picture was changed too. shortcuts to programs remained though. is there any way I can get it all back? I tried doing a system restore for the user account but no luck. maybe I should try it for the whole computer? I just don't want to mess anything up, please help! I had so much valuable information that I need! What personal data on the desktop? Those would all be shortcuts, and that's not unusual with a new account. The data should still be on the hd.there were a few GIF's and microsoft word documents. I tried making a new account and then transferring all the old documents to the new account but the missing desktop documents werent even there, so it was pointless. would a system restore work? There HAS to be a way to get these documents back! The documents would still be in your my documents folder. Just because the desktop shortcuts are missing doesn't mean the data is missing.I tried looking there in the documents folder and I cant find any of it. is it in a different folder possibly? I also heard of a data recovery program called mini tool, would this be of any help?anybody there? SOMEONE else saw my speecy LINK and said my HARDRIVE is failing. i don't think there is too much time left for me to figure this out.. if I dont get instructions soon,  im just going to try the minitool data recovery program.  also should i keep my laptop from updating? it wants to update but im afraid that might make things harder.

Hi

The person who said the hard drive is failing is correct. I wouldn't be doing anything else with the drive except to make a Raw copy to a drive in good condition. Don't try running recovery software on the drive only on the copy. The reason for this from the speccy report   TOSHIBA MK6476GSX SATA Disk

Either send it to a recovery company OR you could using a Blank usb  1 TB drive or larger make a raw copy of the failing drive then run recovery software on the USB drive.

Do you have another computer available you can use to do the copy if not you will need to make a usb pendrive to boot the computer and make the copy.

If you have another computer to attach the drives to you can use disk copy from here https://hddguru.com/software/HDD-Raw-Copy-Tool/
If you need to do it on the laptop then perhaps use ddrescue boot from here http://www.system-rescue-cd.org/

Bottom line..... don't keep using the drive  and if you need data from the drive make a raw copy first and then do the recovery from the copy only.this is caused by hard drive file system error. as a result, the files saved on the desktop are showing up neither on the specified location nor anywhere on the entire computer hard drive. They are completely lost.

please don't try to repair the hard drive, reinstall os or other operations. because use of drive may cause data overwritten issue and you will lose all data.
try a professional data recovery app as soon as possible, like iBoysoft Data Recovery, minitool, or easeus. remember not to download and install them on your c drive.

the bad news is that it's not 100% sure that you will get all lost data back. because your files were stored on the desktop which tend to be written over.thank you so much for your responses guys! I feel like i'm finally coming to a conclusion with this situation, whether it ends good or bad.

as far as my resources are concerned, I have another lower grade laptop, but its much newer. and I also have a desktop. both have CD drives. I also have a 1T external hard drive. Can I use the hard drive? How many gigs of data would I need to back up the laptops hard drive for scanning?Hi

You will need for the 1TB harddrive to be blank. This because a raw copy of the failing drive will use the first 640 GB of the 1 TB hard drive.  Overwriting the data on the drive. Professional recovery software makes an image file 640 gb in size which can then be scanned for deleted/ missing files. The tools i linked earlier will need a blank drive.so i decided to buy a new external hard drive because i have nowhere to put the data on the one I already had. I barely was able to buy one now because it has been raining like crazy the past few days and I only have a motorcycle, not a car, so I had to wait the rain out. anyhow im trying make a raw copy using the HDD raw copy tool 1.10 and it keeps giving me this error message. "NOTE: this tool will NOT copy your boot(OS system). the tool requires absolute exclusive access to the source media. if you want to copy/image your boot hard drive, then you would have to attach it temporarily to another PC and perform the Task on that PC". what do I do?Hi

Then as per my previous post.

If you need to do it on the laptop then perhaps use ddrescue boot from here http://www.system-rescue-cd.org/

you write it to a pen drive or CD and boot the laptop from the media.
sorry I read it wrong. A member in another forum recommended I use clonezilla as well. I did this and im having issues. there were error messages as it booted up and it would let me see my partitions. here are some screenshots. I dont know why they keep loading upside down, i tried to rotate them but its not working. would it be easier if I used system rescue? or is there an underlying problem with my laptop causing these errors?Reading thru the conversion I hope you are not downloading to and using the drive in the laptop when there is data you need to recover . It is very important not to write anything to the drive as it is likely to over write what you want to recover. If you have been using the laptop since the data loss. Then perhaps just load reclaimme it's fast and will only load another 8 mb onto the drive then do the recovery on the drive under windows. This software is not free. https://www.reclaime.com/

This goes against all best practices for data recovery but you are working against time.

The reason I suggested SystemRescueCD is the kernel and software are up to date, the last update was 2020-03-29: so it was more likely to support your hardware. Please don't download it to the laptop use another computer if you want to use this option.
Lisa, thank you so much for reminding me not to download anything straight to the laptop!!!!! So i can download systemrescue on my desktop and then put it on my USB drive, and use that same USB drive to boot systemrescue on the laptop correct?Hi

Sorry after i posted about system rescue I re visited using it, and it doesn't have as easy access to DDrescue as I thought so I would give that disk a miss.

Suggest you cover all possibilities with Hirens Boot disk from here https://www.hirensbootcd.org/

And yes, use your desktop to download and make either a pen drive or CD. Boot and run Recuva to scan the Laptop drive for your files

Solve : Outlook 2010 Emails in inbox for previous days are missing!?

Answer»

I have tried everything I can find to solve my problem with no luck!
Windows 7
Outlook 2010

I have two accounts in Outlook, one is mine and one is my husbands. Server is local internet provider through our telephone company company. I have a business and get a lot of emails daily.....many are left in my inbox so I can go back to them at another TIME. Here is where the problem lies! I can see emails in the morning and when I go back to these later in the day...they are missing. Usually Outlook shows today's emails, the yesterday, then next day, etc. and stay there until deleted. Well, not any more!

A Dell technician has gone through every Outlook setting and cannot find the problem. The strange thing is that my husbands ACCOUNT is working perfectly. This is a huge problem for me, since many of these lost emails are from customers who are waiting for a reply.

I have gone to my webmail, and the missing emails are not showing there either. I hope there is someone here to can help.

Thanks You!
I know this article is for Outlook 2007 but it still applies. Are there any issues mentioned that apply to you?

http://www.techrepublic.com/forum/questions/101-233119/outlook-2007-e-mails-in-inbox-disappearing

I do have two computers using same email address.....

Open outlook
*Click on Tools and then click on ?Account Settings?
*Click on your email account and then click on ?Change? (towards the top)
*Click on ?More Settings?
*Click on the ?Advanced? tab
*At the BOTTOM, you want to make sure that the option to save the emails on the server is selected (this needs to be done on all systems/devices you use to access this email account).

I am having a hard time finding this in 2010.http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/outlook-help/where-does-microsoft-outlook-2010-save-my-information-and-configurations-HP010354943.aspx
http://www.brucebnews.com/2011/04/enable-outlook-2010-search-and-indexing-on-windows-7/
http://www.ehow.com/outlook-pst-file/
The above are 3 links that to one degree or another deal with your issue. Please read them to see if there is something that relates to what you need to do to ensure access to your e-mails. It seems like what windows7/outlook 2010 do with .PST files is at the basis of the issue. While i do use win7 i do NOT use outlook so perhaps someone that uses both may come along and present the solution in a more simple manner than these articles do.truenorthThanks for your help and the info, but my problem isn't solved. Hopefully someone who uses Outlook 2010 will offer more help.

Thanks,
KayeA couple of links...

https://www.google.com/search?source=ig&hl=en&rlz=&q=outlook+2010+emails+disappear

Nothing seems to work! I just don't understand why my account has been affected and my husband's has not.
Maybe the problem could be with the server...do you have an opinion?

Thanks,
KayeIf i am not mistaken from the research i did for you prior to posting my 3 links there was a variety of things that could cause this problem in the combination of win 7 and outlook 2010. It seems to be related primarily to what happens to PST files which i gather is what Outlook creates. By the way it is my impression from pretty well all the articles i saw that in FACT you really have not lost the e-mails. It is only a matter of finding out where they are and how to access them. Have you tried to create another different Outlook account? I know that it could entail some issues that you might not want to have to deal with but what about simply using a different e-mail client. If i find/think of anything else  i'll post again but for the moment my well has gone dry.truenorthCreating another email address would be my last resort because of my business. I have this on too many things!

Thanks so much for your efforts. I really do apppreciate it!

That's not what he said. He suggested using a different email client (program).
Emaline , Your Outlook /win 7 has been bothering me in that there ought to be a simple answer to "where are my e-mails going". So i changed my search parameter to along that line and i found this site which seems to define the precise answer . So have a look at it and see if you are able to find them. If anything in the instructions are not clear to you come back with the source of the confusion and we will see if we can help.
http://www.outlook-tips.net/beginner-user/where-are-outlook-files/
truenorth This was the exact search i used which generated the link plus many others "where do e-mails get stored in outlook 2010".Go down a bit to see the answer as it pertains to Win 7.I've had several users REPORTING similar problems.  In every case, the user has inadvertently hidden the display of emails by some criteria or other.  If your Inbox looks anything like this, all you need to do is click the white "arrows" to expand the sections.  Alternatively, you can right-click on one of the headings (like "Date: Last Week", below) and choose "Expand all groups":

Solve : Factory Reset; good or bad idea to clean computer??

Answer»

1) The to the point Question;  Factory Reset; good or bad idea to clean computer? Would doing a factory reset multiple times over the life of a computer be harmful?

First off, thanks for any response!

2) My history; I am new to the forum. Computer dummy, slow learner, always afraid of messing up my computer. About 8 years ago I paid Dell phone customer service to walk me through a factory restore on an older P.C.

I had to have the hard drive REPLACED a year ago on the laptop in question. Purchased new 2010 Toshiba laptop satellite m645, OS is windows 7, McAfee anti virus.
I can give more info on the laptop if needed. I have backed up all my files to external hard drive. For me it would be worth a whole day of reinstalling programs & MICROSOFT updates to have my computer clean as new again!

3) The not as brief question(s) & explanation; My question stems from the idea of doing this for the sole purpose of cleaning up my computer. I have at least one problem.   I may have other problems that I don't know about.  For me  it seems to be running fine. If I have any virus I am not aware of it.

a) (1 Problem) When I tried to burn a win 7 recovery dvd it gave me error message (0xC0AA0301). So I did an internet search about the error message. I was DIRECTED from a trusted page to a company which I believe sells a form of registry cleaner although they didn't call it that. Next downloading their free software program which did a scan for errors finding 1,000 + errors & if I WANTED it fixed my credit card was then needed. At which point I uninstalled their program.  I read in one of the forums here that registry cleaners are not always good. The reasons make a lot of sense to me.  Besides that I am not a big fan of many of those companies sales tactics. Some give a virus so you will feel forced to buy their product to fix the virus. I learned that from experience. I accidently clicked on a popup that I mistook for my anti virus program.

b) (Fact or Fiction)? "After a couple of factory resets you should buy a new computer." This was a comment on youtube under a HOW to do a factory restore followed by a  web address on where a new p.c. could be purchased, on sale of course.  Anyway, doing the factory reset seems easy enough. Although there were many other comments of people having problems.

c) Do I invite back in any errors when I restore backup files?

d) Lastly, after the completed reset  would you advise a program such as "Ninite" or another to cut down on the spyware and annoying advertisements? I get so weary of it! Or is that a fact of life, get use to it or quit using the computer.

If you made it to the end thank you! Thanks for all help & suggestions!
No, there is no limit on factory restore. The question is only why one would need to so man y restores. And the answer is: The owner likes to experiment.  The factory restore is the way out of a bad experiment.

HDD [Hard Disk Drives] have a re write capability measures in the  tens of thousands on the low end. Or hundreds of thousands on  the upper end. It varies a lot. Aurally, that is a pessimistic guess. High quality hard drives have  MTF [Mean Time to Failure]  near a million hours
A general reference:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hard_disk_failure.
The article above has flaws, but it gives you some orientation.
Mean Time to Failure is very high most of the time. In a few caws, a hard drive can have infant mortality.  Reputable vendors offer a one year warranty.
One year is 8766 hoers.  Amuse only a part of that time is a write operation.Even if write operations have a higher failure, it still would still be a long, long time.

Does that answer your question?

Note: This  is about HDD.
SSD is a can of worms.
Thanks Geek-9PM

What's SSD?  = Solid State

c) Do I invite back in any errors when I restore backup files?

I realize this may be a dumb question but, that's who your helping.

d) Lastly, after the completed reset  would you advise a program such as "Ninite" or another to cut down on the spyware and annoying advertisements? I get so weary of it! Or is that a fact of life, get use to it or quit using the computer.

Thanks Again!Spyware is unlawful. Except if a big company does it. Use of some kind of AV program is now a requirement for all home users. Corporate users may have some other means to protect the workstations. Good Spyware program stop real threats, but allow known companies to interrogate lour PC.

Anti Spyware and Anti Virus may be called different things. Yet some major AV packages include Anti Spyware.

In general, errors on a HDD does  not increase with repeated reads. If anything, it drops. That is hard to prove. The statistics get into very, very low error rates. Like on part in a trillion in in the case of hardware that is good. ECC, error correcting code. is part of many mass storage devices. When you  do a restore on your computer, the HDD electronics will 'repair' flaws in the disk surface by remapping weak sectors. OK, not really a repair, but has the same result.
But if there was a 'hard' error, it will propagate. A 'hard' error is one that can not be corrected and was there from the start. Or was made by a huge disturbance. Lightning strike or nuclear blast. Or fire or flood.
Yes, HDD can fail. But failure of a power supply is more likely for a PC beyond its infancy. Power supplies decline with age faster taht the HDD. On average.

The program you named is a commercial product to help with updates.
http://ninite.com/
I am not knowledgeable about its features.
Thee are some other tools with similar features. A few are free. The Malwrebytes program does its own update checking. So do many AV programs, like Avast.

Asking question is what makes this forum work. 'Seek and ye shall find.'

"Asking questions is what makes this forum work. 'Seek and ye shall find.'

Bless you my son

I am still trying to digest the HDD Wikipedia link & many things you have shared. For me computer is like trying to learn an more important understand a foreign language. It's hard for me to rap my pea-brain around some of the concepts, terms, & acronyms. I need a special dictionary for the acronyms. I will do more RESEARCH on anti spyware, Malwrebytes, Avast, Ninite.

Presently I'm just using McAfee & Windows Defender. I disable cookies I don't recognize until I find something that doesn't work. I also uninstalled Google Chrome & a few others. " to cut down on the spyware and annoying advertisements? I get so weary of it! Or is that a fact of life, get use to it or quit using the computer."

Thanks Again for being willing to help!

Thanks for this web address & for all your help! Not too sure what you mean by factory reset... as I never did one.
As a rule... when I do a new installation on my computer... it last me 4 or 5 years.
It is by that time that I notice that the computer is not as fast as it used to be.

You cannot do a clean installation by using a backup.
Unless you kept your original backup from 5 years ago.
But if you were to use a 5 years old backup... it would only contain your OS and all your programs... but not all the documents and emails you saved since then.
You can get around that by saving all your documents before using the backup.

Using a restore point is only good if you know at what stage the problem occurred. And preferably with 24 or 48 hours. In that case... using the restore point from 24 - 48 hours earlier might solve the problem.

But to have a clean installation... the only way is to format your hard drive and start all over again. And it is a big job if you have lots of programs and hardware to install. I just did mine and it took me a week... doing a few more installations everyday. And solving problems along the way. Plus you have to manually redo all your settings on each program. It is a pain.

Regarding viruses. I have used the free AVG anti-virus for the past 4 years and never had a problem.
The big mistake people make is to think that because they have an anti-virus and a firewall... they are bullet proof. It is not the program which let the virus in... but the people. You go on the internet... and if you did set your security properly... you will get messages asking you "are you sure you want to download this" or "let this program run". And you better be sure. If you are not. DON'T DO IT.

I also noticed during this last installation... that with every free program you download from the internet... they are trying to install 2 or 3 others programs at the same time. Make sure to decline all of them until you get to the last one... which is the one you only wanted. All the others are a form of spyware. And if you are not very careful in reading everything during the download and installation... it is very easy to get caught.

How do I do a factory reset on my laptop computer? It's different for each Manuf...

The full directions will  be at the laptop maker's site...ahern, If you want to be sure that your computer is clean, start a new thread in the malware forum and I can give you some scans to run.

Solve : Laptop Does Not Boot Automatically Unless I Press Any Key?

Answer»

I have an acer laptop model aspire 4741G with corei3 2.4 GHZ processor and 4 gb amount of RAM. I am using windows 7 ultimate 64 bit operating system. Recently I noticed that my laptop doest not boot automatically anymore. It always stops the operation after displaying the press f2 option to enter setup. After that, nothing happens anymore, the display remains black until I have to press any key. Its only then that it continue to boot up and display the OS. I thought it was a software issue so TRIED to format the hard disk and so I did. After formatting the harddisk, the same problem occurs even if I changed the boot priority to the optical drive still it does not continue booting unless I press any key on the keyboard. Another thing that  I noticed was that the cursor on any application such as ms word or ms excel sometimes runs wild that I couldnt control. The cursor always runs on upward movement even if I am pointing my mouse on the desired direction. Please HELP me with this problem. What happens if you unplug your mouse? Have you tried resetting CMOS?I did tried to remove the mouse and restarted the laptop, unfortunately, the same problem happens. I don't know how to reset the cmos of a laptop please tell me how.http://www.ehow.com/how_8350968_reset-cmos-aspire-one-a150s.html
I know its a different model, but the BIOS in your 4741G should be reasonably similar.where can  find the reset for the bios? Quote

Power off your laptop if it is on.
Restart the computer and   repeatedly press "F2" to enter the BIOS menu. Be sure to hit "F2" during   the first few seconds after turning the computer on. If the Windows XP   splash screen appears, restart the computer and  attempt to enter the   BIOS again.
Press the "F9" keyboard button to load the default configuration. Highlight "Yes" and press enter to confirm.
Press the "F10" key to save the BIOS settings and exit. After exiting the BIOS, the computer will boot normally.
From the above website I posted.

Ok I'd tried it and it worked thanks a lot. But I have another problem with the cursor that runs wild. I have discovered the upward navigation arrow is too sensitive that only a very soft touch could effect the movement and if you use it repeatedly, the cursor starts to run wild. Is anything that can be done about it? It works perfectly before but now its annoying me. Quote from: theng on October 06, 2011, 07:50:21 PM

Dirty Keyboard?Might wanna check on your Mouse Properties - Device Settings. http://www.ehow.com/how_7503880_disable-tap-thinkpad.htmlThe ehow did not worked-out. Actually it's only the upward navigational arrow that causes the wild movement of the cursor.Every time I press that arrow the cursor goes on upward movement continously it only stops when I press the downward arrow. I have tried to clean the keyboard but still it didn't help. Is there any way or procedure to remove and put back the navigational key so that I can check if there anything that obstract the operation of the key?please help. http://support.acer.com/product/default.aspx?modelId=2074I'm using Acer Aspire 4741. I'm also have the same problem that it doesn't auto boot unless press any key. I've tried to reset CMOS as above but it does not work in my computer. Could any one suggest me other idea?
ThanksIt may be a mechanical issue. On some Keyboards you can gently remove a key cap and see if there is something under it. Like a broken fingernail. Is there any procedure or guide that I can refer to if I have to remove that upward navigational arrow of my keyboard and see if there's anything that causes the problem? Im not really sure of what to do Im afraid I might break the keyboard. I have found out that this navigational arrow causes the bios to adjust automatically Im not sure but everytime this navigational arrow doesn't react at all then its also the time when my laptop does not load the windows automatically but when the navigational arrows worked I restarted the laptop and reset the bios to the default setting, then it loaded the windows automatically. The last that's remaining on the problem is the wild movement of the upward navigational arrow everytime I use it. Now I am avoiding to use that navigational arrow because I hate to see the cursor run wild. Instead I use the mouse to point on the desired direction. But of course I want to get this problem solved. Please help. This may be of some help.
http://www.laptoprepair101.com/laptop/2007/03/20/key-fell-off-keyboard/
I've tried to disable the quiet boot option. So when the computer check device there are so many beep sounds. But it still can start if I press any key. May be my laptop has some problem in hardware, isn't it? I have just the same problem...
Still looking for the solution...
Disable fast boot on Windows 10, got a normal boot, but still have to press a key to keep going from Dell logo
Sometimes a screen move repeatedly  to up and pressing the up arrow it stops,
Did you try to plug a external keyboard? He's been gone 4 months......and six years Quote

When system comes up if you go into notepad for example do all keys work properly? A hung POST can be a weak CMOS battery and it might not tell you that the battery is borderline. While not a laptop i had a desktop computer act up when battery was borderline, it held the date/time and that why I ignored the CMOS battery, but someone here years ago suggested checking battery and i checked it and it was low and replaced cmos battery and problem was solved.

Solve : java installer error - can't proceed with current internet Connection Settings?

As title implies, trying to update Java, recieving following error ....... installer can't proceed with current internet settings.

I have had this once before on another computer I was using, am sure I altered proxy settings or something, anyway whatever I did last time I can't seem to do it again ...... so typical of me!

Anyway any help with this would be greatfully recieved.

Remove old versions first, using JavaRa.

Download JavaRa to your desktop and unzip it to its own folder

  • Run JavaRa.exe (Vista users! Right click on JavaRa.exe, click Run As Administrator), pick the language of your choice and click Select. Then click Remove Older Versions.
  • Accept any prompts.

Then, go here: http://java.com/en/download/manual.jsp
Download offline version and install it.Thanks again for your response, I am in the middle of doing that now.

I was just wondering if the offline Java version will only work with offline APPLICATIONS.

You see I am trying to use an online backup facility that I signed up to and it is telling me I need latest version of Java installed. Is this going work for that? Quote
if the offline Java version will only work with offline applications
No.
When you opt for online Java installation, it downloads only a small file and it downloads the rest during installation process.
Since you're having some issues, we opted for offline installation.
In that case, you download a whole installation file and install Java online. You don't have to worry about any connection issues anymore, once the file got downloaded.Java installed successfully, Many Thanks for your help.

Kind Regards

Solve : Bios not responding and unable to boot from CD/DVD?

Answer»

Help I am running Vista Premium on my home built PC and if I can chronologically go through how things happened.
1) the PC stopped restarting via the software restart button and I had to hard reboot via the reboot button on the PC.
2) My Computer showed that I had a floppy which I have not and the BIOS also showed first boot disc was floppy and even if I tried to delete from software and changed BIOS to CD it reinstalled on Vista and changed to Floppy in BIOS
3) Now cannot boot from CD so unable to reinstall Vista or any other OS or Bart XP so cannot REFORMAT disc.

I have thought about the problem and the only solution I can think of is to remove the C drive from the PC and put it into a HD enclosure, connect to my XP PC and reformat from XP. Then take out the battery from the Vista PC and short out the mother board, replace battery and reformatted C drive then reinstall Vista. If any one can see another way or can give advice I would only to pleased to here from you. If I have posted in the wrong place sorry but not sure where to post it

Pretty drastic measures at this point...
What happened that caused the Vista install not to boot ? ?

I would power down and remove all power.
Then replace the CMOS battery (which i don't think is the culprit but they're 2 Bucks (.
Then on first boot enter Setup and set the boot order to CDROM then HDD.
Press F10 to "save changes and exit".

Then boot up normally and see where this takes you... ::)Thanks for the reply patio one thing I forgot to mention is that BIOS will not register KEY strokes I am at a loss with this one, it would that somethin has corrupted the BIOS and Vista and I have fire wall anti virus and anti spyware. There are very few BIOS infection agents out there...if any.
Borrow or buy a PS2 keyboard and follow the steps.
Everyone should have one...even if it sits in the closet all year. Thanks I will look in my box of BITS

Solve : All photos lost as well as other docs.?

Answer»

Ok here's the prob. My dippy niece has somehow screwed up her hard drive.
It's a laptop with Vista and somehow it's now been reset back to the factory settings, and all her photos, documents, as well all internet settings are no LONGER there.
I told her to try the old F8 key method and to restore from last known config. but it just fires up to those factory settings still with none of her files there. (and yes, L told her that she should always backup these up to disk!)
She obviously can't access the internet as l was going to suggest DOWNLOADING the Recuva program.
Has anyone got any further suggestions before it goes in to the repair shop?
Thanks in anticipation. If everything was on the same drive / partition there is little hope of recovery - the "factory restore" likely overwrote most, if not all of the files. But if she wants to try recuva there's no reason she has to download it on that computer (and why is it obvious she can't access the internet? Why can't she?)Thanks Allan, and a big thanks for answering.
That's what l'm thinking though. Although it now boots up to a desktop screen, the reason she can't access the internet is because all her settings have been wiped out and l think need reloading.
I didn't tell her to do this just in case more of the disk was overwritten.
Unless there is a miracle cure, which l very much doubt, if she takes it in to a repair shop could they link to the laptops drive somehow to see if there is anything they could copy off?
Thanks again for your assistance
Sure they can look at her drive, but I still don't understand why she can't access the internet. If she's back to default settings, wasn't she able to GO ONLINE when she first got the system? And there's nothing she's going to do now that would cause more damage. As I said, I don't think she's going to have much success with the overwritten files, but she can certainly install recuva and give it a shot. Thanks Allan,
Well who knows? She gets the desktop up, but nothing happens when she clicks to connect to the internet. (it's a bit of the lost in translation/chinese whispers scenario) so l'm going to leave well alone, l think!
I'll suggest she takes it to the repairers, JUST IN CASE they may be able to claw SOME files back, but won't ask her to hold her breath.
When l asked her if she had backed her files up to a cd/dvd disk, she then says what's a backup!!! OMG!
I rest my case, and couldn't answer her question as l had already committed suicide (ha!)
Anyway, thanks for your help, much appreciated as ever.
Regards

right, we used to have windows xp, and now we have vista.
i have 4 children and take loadsssss of PHOTO's, with xp that used to let me keep adding to the same cd TILL it was full, each kid has their own cd for their baby boxes,  vista on the other hand, even though i have unticked 'finalize cd' keeps finalizing the cd and wont let me add anything else to it!!!! how can i get round this? its the same cd's as when we used to have xp so i know its not them, like i say i have unticked finalize cd, and someone advised to use another prog to burn so i downloaded nero.....still the same. my laptop is getting rather full of photo's n i desperatly want them off as i have lost photo's before when laptop broke as i did'nt have chance to put them on a cd, help me plz thanks xI would suggest you go buy a jump drive for each child. They are rather cheap now and are a lot easier to put your pics on plus they will HOLD way more then a cdJust go into windows photo gallery. There is an option to burn to CD.
Click start (the windows logo in the bottom left) click all programmes then click on windows photo gallery at the top you will see the option to burn.
It will give you two options file or video DVD. Choose DVD if you would like to play your photo's back as a slideshow on any DVD player.

Pick out the folder with the pictures in and burn them... not literally
Hope that helps.
Just some info: Unless you are USING Vista's built in burner to burn CDs, it is not necessarily Vista's fault for finalizing the CD. If you are using a program to do your burning, it might not be compatible with Vista, or may need to be run as an Administrator to work.We still do not know what app is being used to burn CD's... No internet problems now, its all just things crashing when I close them.... oh and TrackIR still doesn't work at all.  I've looked through their official website and I've come to the conclusion that its not something on their end.  I think it has to do with whatever is causing the MAD crashing.

[random]Is 2 TB an insane about of space or what?[/random]Is it one hard drive with 2TB or a collection hard drives?

If it is all in one hard drive, the solution to your problems WOULD be to stop using your magic.

Solve : Will computer sleep while batch file is running??

Answer»

I'm trying to set up a batch file that will DEFRAGMENT my computer, create a time log when it finishes, and then shutdown. I'm wondering if my laptop will go to sleep during this process since it is set to sleep after 15 minutes of being IDLE when plugged in. If so, how can I prevent this so that the batch file can complete? This is my CODE so far and I'm running on Vista:

ECHO OFF
REM Defrag C: DRIVE, with full defrag and forced in nec.
START "" /WAIT %SystemRoot%\SYSTEM32\DEFRAG C: -W -F
REM Creating log file of time.
ECHO. |TIME > TIME
COPY LOG +TIME
REM Now shut down, forcing apps closed if necessary
START "" /WAIT %SystemRoot%\SYSTEM32\SHUTDOWN /S /F
:END

(If something doesn't seem right in the code, please let me know).

Thanks in advance!Sleep mode can be a bit unpredictable (and unreliable) at times, so it's hard to say for sure, but I would say that it should still go into sleep mode.  I don't think it'll interfere with your batch, but I suppose it could depending on your settings, so the best way to find out is to simply test it.

Or if you'd rather not go through the trouble, you can disable Sleep/Stand By through the Power Options in your Control Panel. Thanks for the response! I will test it. Be sure to let us know how everything goes.To ANYONE
How do you set up the generated defrag file so you can select it after creating the file. Complete sequence please. I am not to swift on creating app files.

Solve : CD disk "Write Protected"?

Answer»

Quote

Again thanks to you both. And no RUSH; tomorrow or next week or whenever.
Where are you that it's "late"?   I'm in France; now 7:45 pm.
Lets just SAY when I wrote that last message, it was 12:30am

Good LuckIf you are USING PACKET writing, or basic Windows cd writing (it sounds LIKE you are), it may be that the software has decided that the disk has had too many write errors. When the number reaches a certain figure, the disk is marked "write-protected" to safeguard data.

Could be a sign of drive problems, or bad CD-R brand or type.

Solve : Task bar icons are wrong after reboot.?

Answer»

Task bar icons are wrong after reboot.

I rebooted my Win 7 PC yesterday, and all my task bar icons are not what they should be.

In my over 50 years of working the computers(started in '72 on an IBM 360), I've never seen anything like this.

I had 10 task bar pinned programs(with their correct icons)...after the reboot, all 10 pinned programs were still there, except they all had the wrong icons. When I hovered over the icon, the name of the program would appear above it(so I know what program it is).

I was able to 'fix' 5 of them by un-pinning the program, and re-RUNNING it, then pinning it back(with the correct icon).

But, for 5 of the programs, that didn't work. For example my Windows Explorer had a Chrome icon(fixed). The ones I can't seem to fix are:

Windows Media Player shows my burning software icon,

my LView image program shows a Firefox icon,

another version of LView shows a Windows Media Player icon,

my control panel shows a JDownloader icon

my wordpad shows a Nvidia icon

Any ideas of what would have caused this, and how to fix the icons to what they should be?

Thanks!   TRY clearing the icon cache and see if that helps:

1) Manual method: https://www.windowscentral.com/how-reset-icon-cache-database-windows-10

2) Easy method: DOWNLOAD & install Winaero Tweaker (https://winaero.com/download-winaero-tweaker/), on the left SIDE go to "Tools" and then "Reset Icon Cache"Thanks for the fast response. I did that...nothing's changed. Is there a way to 'refresh' the task bar, or do I need to reboot? No, no way to refresh the taskbar. Rebooting is always a good idea when you run into an anomaly such as yours.Rebooted, and a new icon cache file was created...but nothing's changed...task bar icons are still wrong. Do I need to CHANGE each one manually? I tried that before, and it wouldn't 'take'. Two more things to address...not only are my task bar icons not right, they are also wrong in the start menu...BUT, they are correct in Task Mgr. Weird!Well, at this point I'm guessing but I'd suggest running a full scan with BOTH your installed AV and with MalwareBytes.

Hopefully you have a backup disk image recently created that you can restore. If not, shame on you

Solve : Windows Vista, Windows Mail?

Answer»

Hi, had a very good response last I had a query REGARDS my system so here is another one... Those irksome emails that you get that advertise selling/promoting something etc.  They always come with a footer stating, 'if you wish to unsubcribe from future emails, this site etc,  click here'..click where?, as I can't see anywhere to click on, just what to get them of my list as one in particular is a PAIN..

Thanks..
KG  Never click on a link in an email that states "To unsubscribe...click here".  If you do...you've pretty much VALIDATED your email address to the sender, who, in turn, will sell your email address to some other company...thus...more unwanted email.

What you need to do is either report this email as spam to your ISP...or configure your email client to block this sender and have any future emails either automatically deleted or sent to your junk email folder. Thanks for the quick reply.  I already have this particular sender re-routed to my junk email folder.  Apart from the info that you have given me, i.e., is there any other way of cancelling this out, I say this as my ISP being Tiscali, found they are not the easiest crowd to get satisfactorly sense out of any time I've a query with them...let's just say, they can be rather fustrating regards solutions.

KGThe only other alternative is to use a different email client which automatically deletes unwanted email from the server....

Does Tiscali offer a webmail service?  If so...see if you can stop it from downloading there.

Other than that...let it go to your junk mail folder and then delete it.Thanks again, as the saying goes..'a little knowledge goes a long way' this is regards the link scenario.

Final QUESTION for now, I don't get a lot of emails from friends/family etc, but is there a way within Vista whereby I can get some kind of response when an email arrives?  I've SET up the parameters within, (so I think), to inform me with an audible prompt.  Is it possible to be notified visually?  I still don't know unless I actually go into my windows mail whereby a small icon then appears in the taskbar prior to receipt.  My previous work system used to flag up a visual message on the screen when a mail message came in. (I think the system there was XP or Win 2000 Professional but can't be 100% sure).

Incorrect.  Windows XP is not legally downloadable, full stop.
The "final version" of XP is either RTM back in 2001 or SP3 in 2008, depending which way you look at it.  Either way, it's not "Vision XP".

Sounds to me like this pirated version couldn't read disks, are you sure that you can't boot from a disk?  that means boot, not put it in and try to read it under Windows.ok thanks for the reply calum i BOUGHT a new dvd burner now it works fine but prior to format my old dvd burner was working alright.

Solve : Recording Sound?

Answer»

I am currently trying to record the sound that comes out of my speakers. I have HEARD that all you need to do is switch the microphone setting to Stereo Mix, but that doesn't seem to work. It may be because I have a custom built computer, or I could just be making an error some where. The only program I have gotten to record the sound is Replay A/V, but that only records 5 mins at a time and is really buggy. Is there any other program, or setting I can change to make this easier? Any help would be nice. Thanks in Advance. Download and install Audacity:
http://audacity.sourceforge.net/
(Great program for music editing and recording)

See if you can record with it.Already tried that, I MEAN maybe I did the steps wrong, but I really don't think I did. I kinda wish I had, then would be the solution Go to Volume Control (Double click the Speaker Icon in the System Tray (near the clock)
In Volume Control, make sure everything is Not Muted and the SLIDERS all the way up to full.
Now to go Options --> Properties and change the dropdown menu to your Input and press OK.
Do the same and Unmute everything and try again.Change what to input? In audacity or the volume control? Either place I see nothing about changing to input. As for recording in Audacity, all I am getting is the sound my mic hears, not the sound my speakers are giving out, isn't there a way just to record that?In Volume Control.
Start --> Run --> type sndvol32 and press Enter.Okay, I understand that now, but I want to be the input to be what my speakers are hearing, is their any way to chance it to that? the only options I ahve are my #1 mic, my #2 mic, and my normal Mixer, SoundMax HD AUDIO. Is there a way to put speaker sound on this list?Oh, is this Vista or XP?XP and no I am not sticking my tongue out, hehRight.

Are you sure you've got the sliders up and unmuted here? (making sure we're on the same page)

Mine looks a little different then yours, maybe that is important, and yes I know the sliders are down, but even when all the way up they do nothingHave you tried unmuting Stereo Mix?It Isn't Muted, it is SELECTED, Mine works differently it seems, that is why I think is the problem.Oh, Select. I haven't seen that before. Heh.

I'll do some more searching, but what happens if you select all of them or don't select any?Clicking on one moves the check mark, and clicking on the one with the check mark does nothing

Solve : Creating a message window using notepad?

Answer»

Hello all,
I just stumbled across this page looking for instructions on creating batch files. it looks like you guys have a nice community and so i decided to try it out.

my reason for posting is i am trying to create a message window within windows xp with notepad. i used to do it all the time but now i have forgotten the FILE EXTENSION used.

can anyone HELP me out?

Thanks in advance.

-John-Paul

The file extension for a batch file?  .bat. I know the file extention for a batch file, but i could have sworn it was some other type of file.
I will look further into then...

Thanks!.cmd is the other extension for batch files.  That's only for NT-based OSes, though (NT, 2000, XP, 2003, Vista, 2008)ok, I looked it up some and am still not satisfied although thanks for the help thus far.

I figured out how to generate messageboxs but only with .net commands but I have that service turned off and I will not turn it on.

so how do I generate a messagebox without using .net commands?

Thanks again.Messagebox? Something like this?

CODE: [Select]msg * Textgod....

Thank you.
All right. One more question then I will leave this thread alone:

How can I create a message box without having the "message from [username]  [current date & time]" come up in the title bar? Or is this possible?

Thank you so much for your help.Sorry, this topic seems to have slipped.

Anyways, no, I don't think there is any way to change that title.

Just a quick question. Does anyone know of any apps out there that can change all of Vista's DEFAULT fonts to one you choose, all at once? I'm TALKING about the fonts in advanced display settings which are tied to themes. Just want to be able to change them to a single font.Just to make sure we know what you're talking about, you want to change all fonts on the computer to one font?YES. If a COUPLE of fonts can't be cahnged, that's fine, I just want the start menu, window frames, context menus, etc. to be the same font.I found this:
