Solve : can Vlite install 3rd party software?

Answer»

Dunno if anyone can HELP me but: I was told that vlite can automatically install 3rd party software before/during/after installing vista. is this true? is so how do i do it?

cheers FBThe BEST source for both nLite andvLite info...you may want to sign up.

Here Ya Go...I don't know if you noticed but the 7th post down is by a guy called Fireballs..... handsome fellow if i do say so myself. Posted the question about two days ago and no-one's got back to me. thought i'd try here instead.

FBSurely didn't...Maybe visit the unattended install section...
What apps are you including in this build ? ?I want to include things like FireFox, launchy etc. but i don't even know if Vlite will let me do that.

FBUnattended install is what you want...but be patient for a RESPONSE to your Post...Thanks patio

FBNo Problem...wish i was better versed in both nLite and vLite.
I've successfully used both but only for slipstreaming...my experiments with including apps went horribly awry.
I can send you the DVD's if you want to screw up a drive/partition if you like...

lol no it's ok i borrowed my friends DVD, ripped it to my HDD. So i can mess the image up as many times as i like. I've already slipstreamed SP1 and stripped out about 1.4GB of bloatware on the install. and got it to boot/install unattended on my virtual PC. it's just the installing of 3rd party software and some more advanced tweaks i needed help with but XML files SEEM to be the answer.

btw my current windows file, which came preloaded from OEM is 12GB, the stripped down version is 4GB. I can't WAIT to get to grips with the answer files and really see what can be achieved!

Answer»

Hi,  I am helping my friend set up his new vista home premium,
we installed the so called yahoo messenger for vista 8.0.1.422 (I believe), it works fine except it will not connect to the pc to pc call computer feature.
Anyone else have this problem and how did you fix it, if you did? ThanksThe yahoo Im should work fine with any program...the yahoo voip system...even computer to computer just plain sucks....get Skype...shouldn't have any problems then with voice calls to ANY computer....just my 2 cents. What about PC-to-phone?  Does that work?  I use Yahoo Phone but I've only used it for PC-to-phone calls.
you said>>>but I've only used it for PC-to-phone calls.
Are you using Vista?I have it installed on a tower PC with Win XP and on a Notebook PC with Vista and have used it for PC-to-phone calls on both.  It seems to work EQUALLY well on both systems. I never tried the phone part, no need for it.  This is a friends pc and he lives in another state, I will not be on his pc for a week or so to see.
But we should be able to get pc to pc with vista on yahoo messenger, but I dont know anyone who has it.
All FORUMS I visit they seem to have the same problem.
If anyone has a new vista home premium and can use the pc to pc on yahoo messenger, please let me know how you got it? ThanksThe person on the intended receiving end has set up the special Phone In number, right?  I see that SERVICE costs $2.49/mo.

And, just as a test, can you call regular phone numbers or not?I have Vista on my laptop and yahoo messenger.  I can view a webcam, SEND a webcam, but if I try to click on the "call" button it will not connect.  I also got a message saying that I didn't have a sound card!?!?  I have not fixed it yet...but glad to know I'm not the only one who has trouble with this...Yeah it seems to be all over the net how people with vista that use yahoo messenger cannot call pc to pc.
I just received an email from yahoo messenger stating they are trying to fix the problem but they dont know when? Quote from: tomshope on January 01, 2008, 03:44:16 PM

Solve : Delegation of Authority to Defrag to Users.?

Answer»

Hi,
I look after a small number of PCs which I wish to keep defragged. However, all of our users have user status. So, even if I use smartdefrag the Windows XP and 2000 PCs won't allow the users to defrag.

Is there any way I can delegate defagability to ordinary users? Then I can set up smartdefrag to keep their PCs in order.

Thanks

Someone may be able to correct me on this, but older versions of windows (especially 2000) have HORRIBLE customization options for things like you're talking about.

My knowledge is limited, but im fairly certain that it requires professional versions of the OS, ALONG with windows based scripting knowledge (for example, when i worked for FedEx ground, the tech manager for our HUB was able to manipulate windows in ways i've never thought possible"

But it was because FedEx had a certain version of windows, etc.

I guess my opinion is that you'll have to manually defrag each machine by using your own personal admin account on them.Thanks. All our PCs have either Windows 2000 Professional or Windows xp Professional. (We do have a couple of laptops with Vista Home Premium installed, but we don't like to talk about them.. The black sheep of the family, you know!). Quote

Windows includes a Disk Defragmenter tool. Although any user can gain access to the Disk Defragmenter console, the ability to analyze or defragment a volume requires administrator privileges.

Source

I am fully aware of this thanks. This is the CORE of my problem. I see no reason why users should not have the ability to defrag the hard drive. In fact, I want smart defrag to do this behind the scenes for them whilst they are logged on. Unfortunately, they are not allow administrator rights as a COMPANY rule.

I would like to delegate the authority to defrag the hard drive to ordinary users logged in as Users.

Is there any way this authority can be delegated?

Thanks

Solve : Setting up the new HP laptop ( Vista 64 )?

Answer»

This is my first computer with Vista: HP Pavillion dv7-1273cl
A Costco deal, so i think it's SET up with hardware and software unique to Costco.
http://www.costco.com/Browse/Product.aspx?Prodid=11333677

With the HP TotalCare monitoring things right out of the box and a problem with the wireless connecting to my router, i've spent well over 6 hours just getting it to be fully updated. It does not come with a restore DVD and recommends making one ( really, just one? ).

So before i get out a few blank DVD's and follow the instructions for making the restore DVD(s) i want to know about the programs that come with this laptop that will expire in 60 or 90 days depending on the program.

60 days with Norton Internet Security version 16.2.0.7     It's been a long time since i purchased Norton anything. Do i keep it for the 60 days then uninstall it ( been told that i have to get an uninstall tool from Norton to do that ) So before too much time passes MAYBE it's a better idea to uninstall it now and use a different set of programs. From what i gathered this Norton program has more to it than just virus protection ( firewall? phishing? pop-up blocker? ) So if that is what's in the program than what are good replacements that are Vista friendly?
On my XP i'm using Avira and Zone Alarm.

90 days on an Office suite with Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote ( which i know nothing about ) Costco happened to have Office Home and Student on sale for about $77.00  That said ( and i purchased it before the discount expired and it went back up to $119.00 ) a few CH experts have told me that the free office program is actually better than the MS suite. Any thoughts on that OpenOffice free program vs the real deal?

Is it a smart move to shut off or disable the HP Total care? It obviously shows things down as it's checking EVERYTHING on boot up and my guess is that it's sucking up resourses as my computer runs. And on that subject can it be a program like that that keeps the hard drive spinning pretty fast all of the time?

It seems to me that not so long ago a hard drive didn't work so hard all of the time just to play free cell or type a letter in notepad or wordpad. If my observation is correct what happened to put a demand on the harddrive; is it Vista?Uninstall Norton NOW: http://service1.symantec.com/Support/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039

Your alternatives:

- Avast! free antivirus: http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html
- Avira free antivirus: http://www.free-av.com/en/download/index.html

- free PC Tools Firewall Plus: http://www.pctools.com/firewall/

- free Comodo Internet Security (firewall + AV): http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com/

If you decide to install Avast, or Avira, make sure, Windows firewall is turned on, or use PC Tools Firewall Plus.
If you decide to install Comodo, make sure, Windows firewall is turned off.

IMPORTANT! Make sure, you use only ONE antivirus, and ONE firewall.

You can get rid of HP Total Care as well. At least disable it as a startup.

Looking around, you'll most likely find more garbage to remove.

Definitely, make those Restore DVDs. Be aware, that the process of making them often fails, like it did on my two HP computers. If that's the case, call HP, and they'll send you a set for free. Thanks B,

As i mentioned i've been using Avira now for years on XP. i've heard good things about avast.

Don't know much about the firwallls you mentioned except i once tried Commando and maybe because it wasn't familiar to me i was overwhelmed with messages that i needed to agree with or not. Got to be too much so i uninstalled it and went back to ZA.

Got the part about windows firewall being on for one and off for the other. But as far as order goes let me tell you what i'd being doing first: download and save the programs i'm going to use, uninstall Norton, install new antivirus, install new firewall, make restore DVD's so they do not contain any Norton info.

After those things are done what do you think about the Office suite i purchased? Install it or download and use openoffice?

Thanks for the tip. i was pretty sure that it's common knowledge mongst CHer's that Norton is a no no.

Since you paid for Home and Student, go ahead and use it.  I have Office 2007 installed on my Compaq Presario notebook PC, and I've been using OpenOffice.org on an PC running Linux uBuntu.  OpenOffice.org is good and is a good option for an office suite for people who don't absolutely NEED Microsoft Office, but OpenOffice.org is not better than Microsoft Office.

I removed numerous HP programs from my Presario notebook PC but I did not remove HP Total Care.  I have it set to not launch when I start my computer.  Actually, I think HP Total Care is an informative tool; that's why I haven't removed it.

Quote from: Kryptonite on March 01, 2009, 05:57:48 AM

make restore DVD's so they do not contain any Norton info.
UNFORTUNATELY, your restore DVD will restore the system to it's original configuration, including all the HP software and Norton.  You can't control what gets put on that restore DVD.  So, if you ever need to use the restore DVD, you'll have to go through this whole process of reconfiguring again.  The only way to avoid this would be to get software such as Acronis TrueImage and create your own version of a restore disk.

Quote
make restore DVD's so they do not contain any Norton info
Unfortunately, this won't happen, because restore DVDs are created from recovery partition, set by your computer maker, and Norton is there. That's a minor issue, though.

I think, the Office for $77 is a good price.

EDIT: Somehow, I didn't notice soybean's reply, when I posted. Thanks Broni and Soy.

After you expained that the restore disk would be made from the partition side of the hard drive it made sense and i PROBABLY should have realized that on my own.

i've heard and read good things about Acronius but the one time i ordered it i got a notice that it was back ordered so i cancelled and never re=ordered.

newegg currently has the best deal on Acronis if you're still interested. Thanks Patio...there seems to be a version 10 and 11 that has ( old version ) in the discription. Newegg's doesn't have a version.
There's also an offer for a free download from Personal Computer World UK. But there's also a note about the site being hacked. Don't have the time this morning to check it but will later today.

Update: i actually has a few minutes to check the free download out further and the link has been removed. Back to opening up the wallet. If it's a DLoad i would only trust Acronis' page for it...
They have a Trial version you could drive around the block for a few weeks if you like...

Solve : Vista will not operate?

Answer»

Hello all, please do not flame this thread. I am a complete newb, but all I am trying to do is seek some advice/help. I have a year old Acer Aspire 5920 Laptop with Vista installed. My computer froze one day and all of a sudden I could not restart the computer(by restart I mean get back into my profile) So I RESTARTED a few times and now the OS is not FOUND? Startup repair promts and says it 'could not detect a problem'
However, there is a lot of problems under the problem detail tab:

Problem event name: StartupRepairV2
Problem Signature 01: AutoFailover
Problem Signature 02: 6.0.6000.16486.0.0.0
Problem Signature 03: 0

Problem Signature 09: unknown
Problem Signature 10: 1168
OS Version: 6.0.6000.1.0.0.156.1
Locale ID: 1033

I am extremely concerned because there are so many important documents and school assignments on here, and I dont understand why this happened. It was running slowly, so I'm asuming a virus, but I really need these files. I wouldn't mind loading them onto another computer or something, it's just paramount that I do not LOSE them.
Is there any way of say, hooking up a usb cable to my windows xp desktop and transferring the files somehow? I really have no idea.
Please if you can, help me out. Thank you in advance,
Jason
Grab one of these from a PC store:

2.5" to IDE connector...about 8 Bucks.
This will enable you to hook up that drive to a desktop machine to retrieve any data on it...
Remember to scan any files and folders first if you suspect an infection...

As to the Vista issue have you installed SP1 for Vista on that machine ? ?
If it is not part of your Vista CD this will happen. The SOLUTION is a bit of work but you will need to slipstream SP1 into the Vista install files to create a new CD/DVD that you can facilitate repairs with so post back if this is the case.

NOTE: If this is a torrent ver. of Vista you're on your own...

Solve : Cant re-burn onto my CD-RW?

Answer»

I erased all the songs on my Maxell CD-RW and put some new songs on from my iTunes. Problem is, i did not choose the Audio CD for the type. I cant remember if i chose Mp3 or Data CD. now, my modem has a hard time reading the CD. I tried erasing the data on the CD but i get an error message saying it cant be done. I tried re-formating but it cant, another error message. Your modem has a cd player? What are the two error messages that you are getting on your machine every time you try to erase the data or format the disk? This info will help in the troubleshooting process. Quote

Your modem has a cd player?
I want one..TROLL.
I have WINDOWS Vista. i right CLICK on the DVD-RW drive to erase what ever is on the CD-RW. I am then taken to the wizard to erase the CD-RW. for a second it seems like it will erase the disk but right at the end a message reading that the wizard could not finish the process and i should try again. if this problem persists, then there might be something wrong with the disk. when i try to format the disk(again by right clicking the DVD-RW drive and selecting format) a message reading that the process that i have chosen can not be completed. when i go on to my iTunes, the program doesnt read the disk.1. CD-RW disks are cheap.
2. They are easy to damage.
3. They don't last forever.
4. Data stored on them is not very secure
5. Use them as TEMPORARY storage only
6. Don't use them as the only storage place for stuff you want to keep.
7. Your CD-RW disk is possibly damaged and unusable.
8. Try it in another PC to make sure.

Why did you write this?

i put it into the CD/DVD drive in the tower.

Have you only got one CD-RW disk? If so, and you use it a lot, this could be the problem, because they are delicate and do not take well to lots of handling. You could try another disk, but I guess maybe the drive could have a problem.
this is actually the FIRST time i tried to re-write on the disk. but yeah, maybe the drive is actin up. i dont know. earlier today, i had to "repair" my iTunes. for some reason, th iTunes wasnt ABLE to burn CDs and the drive wasnt able to  erase the CD-RW. i thought i fixed the problem. after the "repair," i was able to erase the CD-RW and burn songs onto it through iTunes. thing is, I did not choose the "Audio CD" for the type of disk i was using. I think it was Mp3 or Data CD/DVD. i dont know if that had anything to do with it. after all that, im here begging help.So have you tried another disk?
i pretty much wont find out if another CD-RW will work until i find another one. but regular CD are doin just fine.

Solve : Windows Vista Viewing/Sizing Issues?

Answer»

So I just GOT a new Acer Aspire 6920G. It USES Windows Vista Home Premium. The resolution is at its peak, 1920x1080, so everything is very, very tiny. To a point where I can barely read anything.

I have attempted to go through all the basic help suggestions on Vista and tried changing the Appearance and Personalization around myself... but all I have got is some windows, ICONS, Start toolbar resized but in very poor graphic quality. Then when I open things like Internet Explorer or Firefox the window is still very small, the toolbars are at like a 4pt font.

If anyone has any help or suggestions on how I can get this back to the normal vantage point that every laptop typically uses I would greatly appreciate it, my eyes would even more.

Thanks.Shot in the dark but based on the info given it could be driver issue? ? ? Other then that I would say that my best answer to this would have been change your screen resolution.Yeah, I sent a message to Acer to hopefully get some answers but doubtful.

I've tried every possible route with screen resolution and when I get to even a decent size... it leaves everything ridiculously blurry.

I figure I got the runt of the newegg.com litter. MAKES sense why it took a week to get a rush processing/next day shipping order here, heh.If it is that new i would return it for a replacement...I would... but "ironically", as soon as I got this one in NewEgg.com decided to deactivate this item. So I'm pretty much ef'ed.Simple.I would still talk to the folks at newegg...they have an excellent Customer relations staff and may be willing to make good on this...
You won't know til you ask though.Indeed, Monday couldn't come soon enough.

Its such a bizarre issue.

I now have it somewhat normal... however, the toolbars are still ridiculously small and images are in poor quality, since reducing the resolution to get the LAYOUT to the typical defaults on every other computer I've ever seen/bought.

i have installed office 2003 in my vista i got the software from a friend and its been working fine for few MONTHS now its showing me the genuine office msg can i get rid of that?!By buying a genuine licensed copy of Office, I should think.
i already have thatThis is exactly what has happened on my dads COMPUTER.

His Office 03 has been working ever since he got the laptop. Just now, it is saying that it's not genuine.
Strange....The installed Office 2003 may have a blocked Volume Licence Key, (VLK). This may be because the supplier of the computer had not paid Microsoft for sufficient NUMBER of licenses, or at all. In fact they may have been using a VLK that belonged to a different supplier.

Solve : Beep noises upon start up?

Answer»

I am running windows vista 32-bit

I was working on my PC late last night, and when i was done - i shut it down.  Never had a PC PROBLEM with it up to this point aside from the occasional hiccup it would get when trying to boot up (sometimes it'd randomly freeze on boot up)

Well, now.....when i started it back up this morning - there was a huge problem.

It cycles through the hardware information like normal, and gets to the dell screen that shows a loading bar, and 1/2 through - it emits a very loud, long, and non-stop beeping NOISE from the machine its self (think the bios beep, but repeating its self forever) and the PC won't boot.

My PC does not have an A: drive, so i USED my laptop to create a boot CD
But i can't get the PC to boot from CD
I can't get it to enter boot options or setup

I have no idea where to go next to CONTINUE finding out whats wrong with it.

Any ideas?Open the case. Re-seat RAM, and video card (if any).
If that doesn't help, and you have more than 1 RAM stick, try starting the computer with one stick at a time.well - i got home after work today - turned it on and it fired right up.

So once i was in - i quickly updated my BIOS and the drivers for my chipset (along with a few other non-urgent ones)

I ran checkdisk and defragged the HD

all seems to be fine now :|

Solve : Powerpoint attachments won't open from emails?

Answer»

Got a new computer w/ vista home premium. Have done all the updates and compatibility updates as well. I am still unable to open PP attachments that are sent to my via email. It give me the same old message to set the file association. So I RIGHT click on the attachment and it only gives me the option to open, which does not work. I hold down the shift button and right click and it still only gives me the open command, which does not work. If I save the attachments to my docs, then go into that folder it will open it just fine. I cannot get the message "open with."

What am I doing wrong?Chevronman,
It SOUNDS LIKE you have followed the correct procedure.  After you save the file to your PC, point to file, right click and choose open with . . . and follow the steps.  The file association should be established when you choose to have power point viewer to always open the file.

Point to a picture file, right click and see if the open with . . . option is available?

http://forums.devshed.com/windows-help-34/modify-open-with-option-in-windows-vista-542191.html

"In Vista, if you right click an unknown file, you should be presented with an 'Open' option and if clicked, receive the identical box as in XP:
2 radio buttons; 1-stating to the effect, 'Use the web to find a PROGRAM' and 1-stating 'Select from a list of installed programs'....

If it a known file type you should still be presented with the 'Open With...' option (at least I am on my Vista machine right now)"

p.s You might download the PowerPoint Viewer and install again.

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=048dc840-14e1-467d-8dca-19d2a8fd7485&displaylang=en
I'll try to install the viewer again. I thought it was wierd that the powerpoint programs work flawlessly when the file is saved on my computer but when I try to view the file through windows MAIL it won't allow it. Thanks for the hint, when I get back to the other computer I will try that.

Solve : lpksetup.exe??

Answer»

I'm trying to install some adobe updates but it doesn't want me to have any other programs running during the process, so I shut all my programs down.
A little ways into the update installation, it gave me the following error message:

Please shutdown the following applications and click Retry or click Cancel to quit.

lpksetup.exe

Well, I first looked in Task Manager > PROCESSES, but i couldn't find anything by that name. Then I searched my entire computer for that program, and nothing.
Then I googled it. All I could find is that it means Language Pack Setup. I even searched my computer for this. But nothing.

Does ANYONE know what this is and how to turn it off? It's driving me crazy!  lpksetup.exe is located in C:\Windows\System32
It may be hidden file so...
Open Windows EXPLORER. Go TOOLS>Folder Options>View tab, put a checkmark next to Show hidden files, and folders.

I found it!!!

...now what?  Download HijackThis:
http://www.trendsecure.com/portal/en-US/tools/security_tools/hijackthis/download
by clicking on Download HijackThis Installer
Install, and run it.
Post HijackTHis log.

Solve : Installed game now screen is supersize!?

Answer»

Sorry in advance for my lack of proper technical terms - I've just installed a disc of SIMON the SORCERER 2 on my pc - i have windows vista, and the game started but the graphics were all strange coloured so i exited out to find my windows screen looking crazy - it looks as though its been massively magnified so the screen can only display a tiny square of what it normally looks like! Have tried exiting, restarting etc but it won't go back to normal! during the installing a couple of windows appeared which i accepted but i thought this was just so the game would run properly... Help!Boot to safe mode by powering up and tapping F8 repeatedly before you SEE the Windows splash screen...
Let it load fully...it won't look normal either.
Right click an empty spot on the desktop and SELECT Properties.
Choose a CONSERVATIVE resolution such as 1024X768 to start with and save the changes and re-boot.

SOUNDS like you are making progress.  The original HP disk is quite old and might also be damaged.  Since you plan to reformat, a new or more recent XP disk from HP or MS might work better for the new installation of XP. Either way there will be many updates for XP.

Dias de verano  was right about the Dell post. I have removed that post.  I hope that post did not mislead.

Solve : exe files can't open?

Answer»

Ok guys, this is what its all about. Its a Windows Vista, limited account, no access to admin account and I can't open my exe files. I found something on the internet but i can't install it because i have a limited account. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
How come your account is limited??

Is this your computer??It's actually my friend's computer but I asked here for him cause he doesn't have internet. Any help?
Why has your friend got a limited account.

What I'm trying to get at is, If its his own computer, then why is it limited. Computers are usually limited for a reason. Usually so people cannot access certain files. Also, I your first post you state that 'I found something on the internet but i can't download'. Yet in your second post you've said 'I asked here for him cause he doesn't have internet.'

If you have a limited account and no Admin access then I've good reason to believe that this isn't your 'friends' computer.I sent him some "xp_exe_fix.zip" with my Flash drive and he can't open it. It says that the files can't be copied to the registry or something like that. And he has a limited account because he shares the pc with his PARENTS and they have admin privileges. Unfortunately, they are on vacation and phones don't work there. But anyway, what do you need all these stuff? Just try to deal with the problem.
And inside the "xp_exe_fix.zip" there's "xp_exe_fix.reg". Quote from: devil0150 on March 11, 2009, 02:27:53 PM

The problem seems to be you, devil0150. And here I am dealing with it. It is against the policy of this forum to help people with limited accounts to get around security or other restrictions imposed by schools, employers, parents or other people with admin privileges. Your pal will just have to wait till they get back and ASK them. If you don't like that, then "on yer bike" as we say here in England.

Solve : bugcode_usb_driver error with vista?

Answer»

Hi, I'm new and having a problem. I'm using Windows Vista on a laptop.

It will crash every once in a while with a blue SCREEN and the error will be "BUGCODE_USB_DRIVER". It happened since I got a new external hard DRIVE and I thought that was the problem because I read that error comes from external drives, but it happened when it was unplug so now I have no idea where it's coming from. The only other thing that is plugged in is my charger and my internet so I don't know what to do about it? Also, because my computer has been crashing, it's also been freezing a lot more now and I'll have to restart it in safe mode.

This made be unrelated, but I'm also having a problem with iTunes. Sometimes I open it and it will freeze on the pause button and I'll have to close it and open it again for it to work. I haven't found help on itunes forums, but I think it could have something to do with my computer.

Thanks for any help.Navigate to: C:\Windows\Minidump folder.
If you see any .dmp files, zip all of them, and attach zipped file to your next reply.
It says access denied when I try to make a zip file out of them. Copy those files to some other folder, and then try to zip'em.Here it is. I couldn't fit all the files on there, it's just the first couple, but there's like 100 dmp files. Tell me if you need them all uploaded.

[attachment deleted by admin]I can see all those crashes happened on one day, 2/24/09
Does it mean, they didn't happen before, or after?

Just for the reference (after you answer my question), the dump files list following errors:
BUGCODE_USB_DRIVER, and DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE
and the faulting files are: ATSwpDrv.sys, and usbhub.sys.
The first file belongs to AuthenTec Slide Fingerprint Sensor, which I assume, you have on your laptop, right? Built-in, or as an external device?
The second file is regular Windows USB Hub Driver. The crashes are all from that day, but there's a lot more from other days. It just wouldn't let me attach a larger zip file so I just put some of them in the .dmp files in zip file.

I do have Fingerprint Sensor, it's built in to the laptop. I hardly use it THOUGH.

It's not about usage. One of the errors comes from its driver. It doesn't matter, if you use it, or not.
Attach another package of zip files.
Try to give me some recent ones, maybe from DIFFERENT days.
They look like this:
Mini022409-01.dmp
where 022409 is a date - 02-24-09Here's some more recent ones.

edit: It might just be easier to upload all of them and host on a different site:
http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?kivmdwz2dld (pswd: bugcode)

[attachment deleted by admin]I'll take a look, but again, they're from 2/22, and 2/24. ANYTHING more recent?OK.
Go to Device Manager, then USB Controllers, and uninstall all Hub, and Root controllers.
Restart computer, and they'll be automatically reinstalled.

Go to your computer manufacturer site. Download fresh Fingerprint Sensor driver.
Uninstall current one through Device manager.
Install fresh one. Thanks for your help. It didn't seem to do anything though. At first, I thought it might have fixed it, both of them reinstalled fine. It crashed again with the same error. My computer is also just freezing a lot where the mouse doesn't move a couple times a day. Check C:\Windows\Minidump folder again.
See, if you have some more recent .dmp files, say from March.
If so, zip them, and attach.I have a laptop and I have the same problem with this "bugcode_usb_driver". After restart, I usually have my keyboard turned off and USB interface doesn't work if nothing is connected or if you'll disconnect any devices. I also wonder if this dumping error is somehow connected with another problem that I have - my display sometimes shows only white with black stripes screen and I have to reboot to look for my screen working properly. It usually happens if my laptop goes into sleep mode or when it is turned on.
I read previous messages and decided to attach my windows dump files  if they will help.
Thanks in advance.

Solve : Cannot enter Hibernation properly (Vista)?

Answer»

(Specs, if needed are in the left-hand bar)

Running Vista Home Premium 32-bit.
I have enabled the power button both on my case and on my Start menu to enter the PC into Hibernation.

If I use the start menu button, it successfully closes down the computer, then restarts itself i.e. the fan STARTS to whur loudly then the screen is turned back on.

The case button produces the same effect.

I have already entered "powercfg -h on" in CMD and restarted but to no avail.

Has anyone had the same problem as me and has a solution?

Thank you for any helpAhh...  I think I know what is happening here.  I have an hp pavilion a1400e and the mouse is extremely sensitive, so when I told it to hibernate or STANDBY, it would notice even the slightest movement and turn back on before it even had a chance to standby/hibernate.  If you have a laptop, it has to be something different.I think the problem is it restarts instead of going into safe mode.  Mine does the same....safe mode?

im assuming you dont have the same problem as me but a parallel one?
or am i missing something?Boo,

To do this, follow these steps: Open Command Prompt with administrative privileges. In order to do that please follow the "Quickly Open Command Prompt Here in Windows Vista" article. NEXT, type in the following command: powercfg -h on
Note: The powercfg command has many interesting options and can be used to automate the CREATION, deletion and configuration of power plans for your computer. Type powercfg /? for extensive help options.

try a System Restore to a time before the update.
update, i followed the instructions given by billrich, which ESSENTIALLY were the same as i already mentioned...

i forgot that when it restarts after i try to hibernate, the "windows error recovery" screen comes up so i always choose "start windows normally" and it boots with no problem, just without having saved my previous session

If it includes the letters OEM, you have an OEM version of Vista.

Solve : The links to files on my external hard drive are broken...?

Answer»

It's a hard drive I use for music/videos/games etc.  I tried to update my iPod one morning to find that I was unable to update it and when I checked in windows explorer the folder which contained my music had changed it's type to file, and hence windows was no LONGER able to access the mp3's within the folder.

If I select all the files on the hard drive in explorer and right-click to find the size it says there is 929mb on the drive, however If i view how much space is taken up on the drive then it claims to contain 460Gb of DATA, obviously the two figures don't match!  This tells me that the data is still there but I am unable to access it.

So I ran a check disk on the drive on the drive and it returned the message attached.  The gist of this message is that there isn't enough free space on the hard drive to restore these files on the hard disk.

So what I was wondering was would it be possible for me provide another hard drive which contains enough space for the dat to be restored? or am I able to access the data through msdos and move the data onto another hard drive that way?

Also would this problem with space mean that purchasing data recovery software would not be worthwhile?

I am running an HP G70-120EM which is running windows vista.  The hard drive is an elements 500 gb formatted to FAT32.

Guess I learnt to back up the hard way!

thanks for any help you can provide it is greatly appreciated!

[attachment deleted by admin]try and see if you can access the files in command prompt first. if so it should be possible to copy them over that way

its an odd problem i'll give you that!!

sorry im not much help!

andyMs-dos doesn't seem to acknowledge the folder as a directory as I understand it.  it doesn't say next to the folder/file when I type "dir"

(I've NEVER used ms-dos before had to find the language online!)have you tried using the command

cd (insert folder/file name here without brackets)

also it might work if you try and change the PROPERTIES of the file back into a folder somehow in the properties dialog box under the right click menu

it replies that "the directory name is invalid"

The only things I can change in the properties window is the tick boxes in front of "Read Only", "Hidden" & "Archive"i just ran a quick google session there which shed sme light on the situation (i think)

sorry im not much use i've enver seen or heard of this problem before

anyway apparently that folder could possible be a fragment of the files and the folder which where corupted and need to be recovered

unfortunately this is bad news as this file is bigger i take it then half of the hard drive so there is no room for recovery.

if you have another external drive big enough to do it though try and copy the file over and then try and recover it through the disc check for that drive?

this is a complete long shot mind

im REALLY sorry i cant be more help!!!!

andyIs there a command in ms-dos which is equivalent to the mv command in Unix?

in windows i have tried cutting a smaller folder from the drive thats playing up to c and that doesn't seem to affect the size of the drive so i'm not to sure about that idea!

thanks for your help it's really appreciated!REN [drive:][path]old_filename new_filename  for renaming

      MOVE [Source] [Target]

Key
source : The path and filename of the file(s) to move.

target : The path and filename to move file(s) to.

Both Source and Target may be either a folder or a single file.

if i remember mv is move and rename but merged into one really?

if so the above commands are the ones for cmd

It is yeah.

However moving it in dos has no different effect to cutting it in windows unfortunately, not sure what's left to try!

Do you know if any data recovery software would be able to recover the data to another drive if the lack of space on this one would be an issue? The filesystem on the external hard drive has become corrupted. It may or may not be possible to recover any data. It's probably gone to data heaven.

You could try an app called Recuva

http://www.recuva.com/

im sorry man. i have absolutely no idea!!

sorry dude!!

andygiving it a go now, it says that there is a lot of unrecoverable files though, you might be right!

thanks darhblader for all your help you had more ideas than I have!no problem any time. sorry i couldnt help you

Solve : Receiving multiple errors--new ones every day!?

Answer»

Here are some of the errors I have received during the past 2 weeks:

-failed to connect to windows service
-COULD not connect to system, event not in service
-Internet explorer REMOVED from desktop
-bad_pool_header
-vista product key is invalid for activation
-user account control has failed to authenticate the user
-error code OX800700E6
-pipe state is invalid
-Blue screen referencing memory

I have tried googling these errors but most of what I find is very technical and I simply do not understand it.

I have had trouble getting the computer to boot and shut down. I have had the screen go black for about 15 hours until the battery died. My icons are large and now the entire appearance of the computer is different. I changed the screen resolution which made the icons and windows close to normal. I am still unable to get the translucent vista theme to come back up. I am now receiving a message that states that the screen saver cant run because it REQUIRES a newer video card or one that's compatible with Direct3D. My screen saver is one that is preloaded and it worked fine yesterday. I bought the computer in August 08 so I WOULD think the video card is not that old.

I go through periods where I just get blue screens that flash too quickly to read and shut downs. My windows problem log contains over 200 items.

I have not done anything to the computer other that install the updates that I have received from windows. Even when I do this, half of the updates fail. From what i can tell this all happened at random. Here are the SPECS of what I am running:

HP dv6700 notebook PC running vista service pack 1
3.gb ram 32 bit operating system
intel core duo [email protected] GHz
Nvidia graphics card
Trend Micro PC-Cillin
wireless linksys router
verizon DSL modem
no Windows CD or backup CD's

I would appreciate any help with solving these problems and any info on whether these are common issues so I can determine if this is some flaw within HP or Vista or if I just got a lemon.  At this point I am thinking the only resolution would be to completely wipe the system but I wanted to see if there was anything i could try first to try to avoid that.Navigate to: C:\Windows\Minidump folder.
If you see any .dmp files, zip all of them, and attach zipped file to your next reply.

Solve : Some of my icons are going blank?

Answer»

Hi. I've been having this problem recently. I'm on Vista Home Premium 64 bit. For the past couple of days, every time I try updating a program, when the little notification to restart comes up, I'll click restart now or whatever it says, and then 5 or 6 of my desktop shortcuts turn into blank white ICONS with no functionality as well as their counterparts in the start menu along with a few others there too. I have to use system restore to get them back.

I've tried having windows display different sized icons. No dice. I've tried deleting the iconcache.db file in my appdata/local folder and restarting twice. No dice there either. Any help would be greatly appreciated. If I happened to leave anything out just let me know. bump?  usually thats caused by 2 reasons

1. the location of the program the SHORTCUT is pointing to has changed since the update

2. the icon has been updated and moved so the original icon is left without its functionality

what icons are they. regular programs or windows programs

have you moved anything to a custom location or have you kept the files in the same default place?

Solve : Need help with Computer problems?

Answer»

I am having an array of issues with my computer. Most of the time, it will not boot properly. when it does I am getting a variety of errors. Sometimes I get the Blue screen with various errors on them but the screen closes too quickly for me to read what it is saying. I have managed to grasp SOMETHING bad_pool and memory_something?  Other times I receive a message that the Windows activation key is not active and that I need to put a new activation key in. I am receiving errors that Windows is not operational. I am also receiving an error about RUNDLL32? Other times it will start but the icons are huge. It will run and then shut down within a few minutes. Other times it will start with the errors and run FINE. I just allow it to run without shutting it down or putting it in sleep mode until it decides to turn itself off again. I have been propted to do all kinds of checks which have done nothing to correct the problem. I am running Trend Micro and I keep getting messages that I need to update my parental CONTROLS. Sometimes the firewall just gets turned off by itself. I have no idea what is WRONG with the computer or how to fix it. Any help would be appreciated. I am using an HP laptop running Vista.  Most lately it is installing drivers everytime I get the computer to start. Also, it will often go the the black screen and stay like that until the battery dies. At this point the only way that I have figured out how to get on the computer is to let the battery completely DIE and try to restart as I can never get it to shut down properly. It seems like I get a new error every time I try to boot the computer. I am not too computer savvy so I have no idea what any of this means. Thanks! http://w.trendsecure.com/portal/en-US/tools/security_tools/hijackthisww

Solve : Partition Disappeared After Installing Vista 64?

Answer»

I still have the same system specs but I had to RMA several parts including the hard drive, so Vista had to be reinstalled.

I divided my drive into 3 partitions during setup. Of of the partitions and all the space on it is gone.
It said during the setup that it was not an NTFS partition. I don't KNOW how it got that way but it wouldn't let me reformat it. Then when Vista started up it says the partition doesn't exist.

Do I have to install Vista again If you just installed Vista, I would do it again.

Otherwise, you may WANT to see what's in Disk MANAGEMENT.The partition appeared in disk management but it had no NAME. It wouldn't let me name it or format it. I reinstalled Vista and had the same problem. So I threw on an old copy of XP I had and the problem was fixed. I don't get it. Was it ever compressed while runnung XP ? ?
Or encrypted ? ?No it's not compressed or encrypted. I just did a standard XP install.History of what was on the drive and what tool did you partition with ? ?

It may very well have been the manuf. hidden partition that contained Vista and all your recovery software...
But since this is a guessing game we can carry on...It was a brand new drive straight from newegg.com and I used the partitioning tool inside windows installation when it worked. I also tried Disk Manager but that didn't work. Quote

I used the partitioning tool inside windows installation when it worked.

What version of Windows? Quote
What version of Windows?
XP homeUse the drive manuf. utilities to partition and format the drive properly...
Windows is a crapshoot unless you are familiar with FDisk which would be my first choice here...It was an OEM drive and didn't come with a utilities disk. I'll use FDISK if you give me some pointers
What brand of drive is it?  Can you get utilities from the manufacturer's website? My specs are in my specs. It is a Seagate barracuda 1.5 TB drive. I couldn't find any software that had to do with formating or setup on the website, I just found instruction, but that could just be me.Update- I tried reinstalling Vista again. This time I created several partitions 1 MB in SIZE and deleted the bigger ones. Anyway, don't really know how I did it but I got the partitions to the size I wanted and Vista installed.

Solve : CCleaner - "feel good" questions?

it is in no way similar to the old ini file. ini files had sections and values. they didn't have data types. binary blobs, or most importantly, a recursive definition.

The keyword there was similar.  Would you define what you mean by "recursive definition", and perhaps why it is "most important"?

Then don't use the registry cleaning portion of the program. But be warned that every single registry cleaning program is junk. The only positive thing that can be done with the registry is compacting it.

I was hoping some weren't. It seems like a tremendous effort was put forth to create a tool that behaves unreliably.  I was assuming (hoping) there were extenuating factors at play... such as the need to disable "file indexing" (or something similarly PEDESTRIAN) during CC's use.

Darn.

H-U-G-E ... T-H-A-N-K-S ... for the link, GREAT reading!

I don't WANT to come off sounding like a Regy cleaning evangelist. I see my REAL problem was the perception of Regy cleaner tools as an any-person's-point-and-click-solution tool. They aren't. A great tool in the hands of a technologist could be ABSOLUTELY devastating to the point-and-click community.  Know what you're doing!

My "concern" is bloat from useless entries (orphaned entries left behind from uninstalls.)  Admittedly it's an old concern born from the Win9x days when RAM, CPU speed and HDD space were limited.  Those items are in abundance with today's new machines and the need to maintain a clean Regy is reduced.  A good defragger is probably more effective now, in terms of improving operating speed, than anything else.

As long as one pursues a regular maintenance schedule -- of removing "TEMPORARY files", checking msconfig startups, and watching what "services" get loaded, with the addition of a good AV product and learning how to read the HijackThis log -- machines tend to remain healthy.

One of the comments made in that linked discussion caught me eye: (paraphrased) "tools written by computer enthusiasts generally perform better." I'd like to give that an "Amen!"

Thanks again,

Solve : Automatically write user name in my computer icon.?

Dear Team,

it is possible , i saw the same on a pc but i don't know how is it possible.
so please tell me as soon as possible.

Thanks................................. ..............So when you log on to a computer, the My Computer name changes?this will be automatically not manually.I don't know how to do it.

Is this your friend's computer you're talking about?I  believe renaming the My computer icon in each account will store that name for each account, thus making the "My computer" icon have a different label within the separate accounts. That should work but if it didnt use a batch script on startup
something LIKE:  ren "my computer.lnk" %username%.lnkthe "My computer" icon isn't  shortcut...He doesnt say what OS he is using.

He doesnt say what OS he is using.
On my vista My Computer is a shortcut.
Right Click the Desktop and go to Properties.
Click on the Desktop TAB and click Customize Desktop.
Tick the box next to My Computer and press OK.ok that isnt how you do it in vista but i enabled the icon. what is the point of it anyway when it does the same as the shortcut except you can right-click and go to system on the contol panel?Meanwhile...My Computer, Recycle Bin, Network neighborhood/My Network places, are not Shortcuts.

They are Shell NAMESPACES represented via icons. Shortcuts have a shortcut overlay beneath them. My computer only has that when it literally IS a shortcut, in which case it means the shortcut was created after the fact rather then the "official" method Carbon Dudeoxide has posted. the Vista method of doing the same thing is of course to right-click the desktop->Personalize, and select the "Change Desktop icons" task pane link.

This will have the same effect as it does in XP or previous versions, which merely changes the default icons shown within the desktop shell namespace.

Of course- you CAN create shortcuts TO these namespaces, but they act different then the actual namespace icon- for example, there is no LNK shortcut in the FOLDER, which is the leading reason to deduce that it is not a shortcut- additionally, the properties context menu does not show the standard "File Properties" property page, but rather the same dialog present via the WINDOWS key+Break combination.

Solve : What's the best OS for a NEW HTPC??

Answer»

I have a good processor a q6600 and 4GB ram, plus other componets that will make this a NICE system.
The problem is I'm new to Vista and having many problems with the software I want to use. Now I know that there are WAYS to get around most of Vista's annoying things, but should I just stick with XP or go for Home Media center? Because I just feel like I'm READY to throw my COPY of Vista out the window.

What exactly are the advantages Vista has over XP?

Is it graphics, speed, ect?If you already hate Vista there are only 2 choices...
Install XP.
Or give Vista more time.
You could always set up a dual-boot system as WELL...

Personally i like Vista.I will give Vista another try if it has any advantages over XP besides it's interface. What do it do exactly to make your PC perform better?

Solve : missing data from user account?

Answer»

I RECENTLY RESTARTED my computer.  (a laptop, Dell, with Vista)

When it restarted, all my information was gone from my user account.  ICONS I had on the DESKTOP, data in "Documents", etc. etc.   All my old information cannot be found by going to Documents, or any other folder.

However, there are now duplicated folders, such as Documents, in Start/Explore.  One set of folders does not have my information, one set does.

What's the scoop?

Solve : Creating Contact Groups in Windows Mail - Vista?

Answer»

I guess the subject line says it all.  I've been able to do it in Outlook and Outlook Express, but I guess I have a blind spot concerning anything VISTA.  If anyone can help me create Contact Groups (or Email Lists, etc.),  it will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.
Hello and welcome to the forum. Apparently, when you open Contacts, it does not have a New Contact GROUP BUTTON, just as mine also did not until about 3 minutes ago.

See How to Restore the Missing "New Contact" and "New Contact Group" Button in Vista Contacts Folder.  If you follow the procedure there correctly, you will then have a New Contact Group button on your Contacts PANEL menu.I'm not sure, yet, if this is the place for this, but thanks for the help, Soybean.  I didn't look back far enough to find my question answered.  It sure helps to have people, er, uh, vegetables (or is it legumes? ) with a HISTORY here.  Hopefully, in the future, I can help, too.   judiko

Solve : Microsoft Vista Ultimate 64-bit Boot Issue?

Answer»

Hello everyone,

This is my first time posting on these forums and I'm looking for some help regarding a boot issue I'm having. I have already tried searching for my issue and I couldn't find what I was looking for so I decided that I would make a new topic regarding the matter.

Here are my computer specifications:

OS: Microsoft Windows Vista Ultimate 64-bit OEM
Motherboard: Asus Rampage Formula
CPU: Q6600 2.4GHz Quad-Core
RAM: 8GB (4x2GB) DDR2 1066
Storage: 4x 500GB in Raid0 and 1x 750GB all connected via SATA cables
Graphics Card: Nvidia GTX 280 SSC Edition
PSU: 950W

Now for the details...

I downloaded and installed an overclocking utility that corresponds to my motherboard (ASUS AI Suite) and applied the overclocked values. I reboot the computer and it won't even boot up, it just hangs during the testing process. So I reset the computer and notice that it starts to boot up and I see my computer asking me to insert the Vista Installation Disc but before I really thought about it I reset my computer again thinking I could boot into Vista. Then during the boot process my computer tells me overclocking failed, please change your values or something like that. So I go into the BIOS and select "load setup values" which resets my BIOS. I then am able to boot into Vista and use the OS like I normally would. So I decided to REMOVE the overclocking utility, run CCleaner, and reboot my computer. I reboot my computer and then this shows up:

"reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key"

At this point I'm thinking that I have something configured wrong within the BIOS so I decide to press the "clear cmos" button on the back of my machine to completely erase all of the BIOS settings and reset it to the default values. I then go into my BIOS and do the following:

SATA Configuration: Configure SATA as RAID

Boot Device Priority:
1st Device: RAID Intel Volume0
2nd Device: DVD-ROM
3rd Device: 1st Floppy Drive

Hard Disk Drives:
1st Drive: RAID Intel Volume0
2nd Drive: RAID ST750330AS which is the 750GB HDD

I also change my DRAM Frequency from DDR2 800 to DDR2 1066 which is what my RAM is. I apply the settings and reboot the computer. My computer reboots and passes all the tests and I still get:

"reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key"

So then I do some googling and I tried putting in the Vista Installation Disc to run Windows Repair and I have to select an OS but there is no OS listed. I can hit next and run Windows Repair and it'll say that its complete, reboot, but nothing happens after the reboot. My computer just shows a blank screen with the _ blinking. So I do some more googling and I try going through the Vista Installation Disc again to try to fix my MBR. However, if I don't see an OS how can I even use this feature. Again, I hit the next button even though I don't have an OS selected and run Bootrec.exe -> Bootrec/FixMbr and it says complete. I reboot and try to boot into Vista and it still doesn't work.

My friend told me to run Spinrite on my RAID configuration to diagnose the health of my HDD's to see if that may be causing the problem, but I haven't gotten a chance to do that yet and I wanted to see what replies I get first.

Thank you for taking the time to read this and any help would be greatly appreciated.Have you tried just doing a clean install of Vista?

Alan <><  ale52 makes a good point, thats also what i was thinking of.

I also think what may have happened to you is this:
You didnt really install vista completely and when you rebooted and reset the bios the first time then it booted to cd and vista came up as if it were installed but its only because the vista install dvd is in your cdrom. ITs happened to me a few times in win xp, same exact thing when i was doing an install but when the xp install cd was taken out of the cdrom then it wont boot up.

so just do the install again and just make sure your boot order is correct.  I have a lot of experience installing win xp pro and with some bios, especially with HP or Compaq pcs i have had to make only the cd the boot device and make no other boot devices. Some bios will let you do that others wont, depends on what bios and what version and depends on the mobo as well, many variables, mostly its the bios. From my experience its best to have only one boot device, the cdrom. Later, when os is installed you can change it. And dont worry it will boot to the hard drive even when you only have the cdrom as the boot device. All win os love to go to the hard drives.

I have installed win xp pro for others probably 500 times or more.
This install of Vista has been working for almost a month now. I asked some relatives and friends and they said that when I pressed the clear cmos button it may of WIPED my RAID configuration talking with the BIOS. The two things that I can think of is to run Spinrite and to update my BIOS to the latest version and if that doesn't work then I'll have to reload my computer, but only the RAIDED drives and the data on the 750GB will still be there just like the last time when I reloaded.

Any other ideas?I updated my BIOS to the latest version, reconfigured my RAID setup, and reinstalled Vista on the RAID. My computer worked up until I started installing my programs. I installed Alcohol 120%, rebooted, and then I started to have another MBR issue and I noticed that my RAID Utility had an error on one of the drives so I reconfigured the RAID setup and reloaded Vista. My computer worked for about a day and it froze while I was playing Call of DUTY World at War so I had to do a hard reset. I reboot and my computer tells me "disk read error" so now I'm in the process of loading XP on every single drive with only one hard drive plugged in at a time via full format because Vista doesn't support full format, so if I have a faulty drive I can diagnose which one it is. Vista does a quick format automatically when creating a new partition. If I can boot into XP on every drive that was in RAID then the drives are fine and something may be wrong with my BIOS/Motherboard.I decided to format my other drives within XP and if no error comes back then my drives are good and something is wrong with my Bios/Motherboard. This is really getting old. I've gotten burned with Asus motherboards twice.  Once a SERVER in a tax office...at tax time [that was something memorable] and the SECOND on my own computer.  I'm cured of using Asus again.  I wouldn't be surprised if it is indeed the motherboard.

Alan <><  Sorry to hear that Alan. However, I updated my BIOS, RAID controller, and configured my RAID setup as RAID5 because I don't trust the drives atm. I also won't be installing Alcohol 120% considering that is what gave me an issue on my last try at this whole fiasco. I read on the net that Alcohol 120% is known to give Vista issues even though Vista is supported. I also overclocked via BIOS and am running at 3GHz atm by increasing the BIOS from 266 (1066) -> 333 (1333) and changed the DRAM Frequency to DDR2-1066.

So far so good. We'll see what happens. Good luck

Solve : Are Folder Junctions safe for moving C:\* folders to D:\ etc. ??

Answer»

Major static folders that only change every other year are :-

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\My Music
C:\I386
C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles
C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET

I propose moving all the above to a different partition,
and replace them with Folder Junctions (created via xplorer2).
to greatly reduce the time taken to create a system partition C:\ image,
and increase how many images can be held on my external disc.

After limited testing I am satisfied that Folder Junctions :-
fool applications into thinking nothing has moved; and
both FOOLS and NOT fools Windows Explorer,  ! !
With all partition contents selected, Properties includes the Size on Disc of all files on the partition, plus all files in the Folder Junction target,
BUT when the partition is selected, the Used Space excludes the junction target files.

Please advise me :-

Are my proposals safe ?

Will "Windows File Protection" or "Patch Tuesday" etc. punish me ?

Are there any system folders I should refrain from moving ?

Will System Tools such as defraggers, partition imagers, or Partition Managers, go peculiar ?

The Music folder is known as either "My Music" or "Shared Music",
What name should I give to its Music Junction replacement ?

I believe Windows will resist me replacing "Shared Music" -
Should I use Safe Mode and/or TAKE OWNERSHIP of the folder ?

Would it be better to use TweakUI for moving the music folder ?
I've never used junction points but I think, for the Music folder, I would simply move it without using a junction point.  I don't see why a junction point is needed to move it.  To move the standard Windows Music folder, right click on My Music, or Music if using Win Vista, select Properties, select the Location tab, click Move, and proceed.Hi

I cannot see a location Tab.

I am using Windows XP Home with SP3.

Using Windows Explorer in Folders mode (directory tree on left, and files on right) :-
address bar set to "C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents"
The title bar says Shared Documents,
The left side shows I have selected "Shared Documents" with 6 sub-folders
The right side shows the same sub-folder names, plus a few files including desktop.ini
The subfolders are Shared Music; Shared Pictures, Shared Video, microsoft, Regseeker, and snapshot.
When I right click Shared Music etc, at the bottom of a long list properties only offers two Tabs, General and Sharing.
Right click on any of the 3 other folders gives properties with 3 tabs.
The extra Tab is Customize - this also has no Location.

Incidentally, when I open Shared Music, the Title bar agrees, but the address bar is
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\My Music
hence my confusion upon what to call a Folder Junction.

Elsewhere on the Internet I have read that "Shared Music" etc. is some sort of special "Shell Folder", and that Windows Explorer can move most folders by dragging, but these shell folders cannot be moved, but TweakUI can do the job.

If Junction Folders can meet all my needs, I only have one tool to master.
I also prefer to avoid TweakUI because I fear it may fix the registry, and if it involves HKCU then my daughter's profile will lose her shared music until she also runs TweakUI, and that may require me remembering to give her administrator rights.

I could simply copy all the music contents to another partition, and delete all the music from "Shared Music".  I doubt that Windows would give me any grief.  I fear I might get grief from my daughter depending upon how much effort it takes her to adjust her play-lists etc.

I assume the Location Tab is available in Vista, and in XP Professional, but I cannot find it in XP Home.
Please advise me if I am looking in the wrong place.

Regards
Alan

Since the junctions function is to assist moving the folders but letting Windows think they are still there then when you create the image files it is still going to point to the moved data and include it in the created image...saving you no time or space.

There are other approaches to file management that i won't go into great detail on right now but when it comes to Music, Movies and application data that is quite large i never let it wind up anywhere near Docs and Settings.
I treat these categories as seperate entities that i can also backup and/or image to there own CD and are therefore more manageable to restore/organise.

Personally i always thought Docs and Settings was a very bad idea on MS's part as was the Program Files approach as the default location for installing apps.
You wind up with 2 overgrown unmanageable beasts that just make backups and simple file management a mini-nightmare.
When i need to find something i don't want to drill down 7 or 8 layers of nested folders just because they thought it was a great idea at the time.
Course i learned file management practices and techniques from a DOS based app back when drive space, memory and other crucial factors meant you had to stay organised.
But enough of my mini-rant on how MS sees things. Try and suggest to her approaching a simpler file management approach that would alleviate your chores when creating an image.I fully agree that everything on C:\ is a terrible idea.

Unfortunately my daughter bought this as a package deal with XP pre-installed four years ago, and I had no involvement.

Since then I retired, and she gave her laptop to me.  Hence I have many of her music albums in "Shared Music"

Recently she was given an IPOD.  I HATE Apple - I think iPod and iTunes are Apples revenge upon the superior marketing of Windows - I feel another rant coming on.

The good thing is, her new iTunes library is all in a separate partition S:\.

The Junction Folders will save space and time.

FIG. sshot_01 shows all the objects within S:\
Fig. sshot_02 shows the external properties of S:\
The external used space is 10 MB greater than the internal Size on Disk, probably due to overheads such as MFT zones etc.
Fig. sshot_03 and sshot_04 come from R:\ after an image of S:\ was restored to it.
and also a Junction Folder "Shared Music"was then added to target 323 MByte selection I had copied to D:\
Fig. sshot_03 includes the "Shared Music" size within the size on disc,
But Fig. sshot_04 excludes it, it only exceeds sshot_02 by 42 MB because larger partitions have larger overheads ( MFT etc I guess).  sshot_04 is 259 MB smaller than sshot_03.

Hence Windows Explorer has two different ways of measuring a folder that contains a Folder Junction - so I am concerned about possible system collapses.

Acronis imaged a possibly fragmented S:\ as
S_Suzanne.tib   661,335,040

I restored this to R:\, which defragged as it restored, and then Acronis imaged it as
R_S0_.tib   660,797,952

I then added the Folder Junction targeting my 323 MB selection on D:\
and Acronis refrained from capturing the target, the next image was
R_S1_.tib   660,799,488
i.e. it only took an extra 1536 bytes to capture the Junction Folder name and destination, but did not capture anything on D:\

Hence I am certain Folder Junctions will save space with Acronis - but other imaging tools may behave differently.

I am just concerned about the weird and wonderful ways in which Windows Explorer chooses whether to report the size of a target, and whether other aspects of Windows may decide to auto-destruct ! !

I cannot see a location Tab.

I am using Windows XP Home with SP3.

My mistake in saying the Move procedure can be applied directly to your My Music folder. The move procedure is found in Properties for My Documents, not My Music.  But, since My Pictures and My Music are normally under My Documents, moving My Documents also moves My Pictures and My Music.  This should help: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310147
There's also the possibility some of the unexplained space is Acronis overhead in the image that is lessened after it's restored and defragged.
I'm not sure but i think the Disk Properties size reporting in XP and Vista does NOT include restore points where they are included in Explorer...or it's the other way around.

I'll have to try junctions on my next weekly image and see how it behaves on my machine. I was under the impression from the folks at an Acronis support Forum i visit that the data from junction points was included in the image...seems that info is incorrect as you've pointed out.

Acronis Support Forums...just in case you need the link.

Interesting info and thanx for sharing it...i learned something new.
I usually image on Sunday PM so i'll post my results next week.

Thank you.  I was not aware of this.

Unfortunately the Target Tab is very special and rarely available.

Target Tab is not available for anything I have ever seen previously.
I can see, now you have instructed me, that is is available to
My Documents

It is however not available to the identical
C:\Documents and Settings\Dad\My Documents

It is also not available to
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents

Four instances of Windows Explorer show each of the above in fig. sshot_34
At the left, My Documents : properties has 3 tabs, including the elusive target.
The 3 off other instances have properties that exclude the Target tab.

sshot_35 gives a concise overview of the first and fourth locations, i.e.
near the top, designated by the cursor, and indented one level right of Desktop, is the special place that has a Target Tab;
near the bottom, designated by the selection highlight, and indented two levels right of Desktop, is the "All Users\Documents" (Shared Documents),
and this is sadly lacking the Target Tab.

M.$. seem to be more skilled at creating special rules and pitfalls than they are at designing an O.S. that resists malware ! !

I now look back upon the days of DOS as the good old days,
BUT I can remember that at that time I was thoroughly disappointed with I.B.M that for the IBM P.C.they chose the inferior DOS - the alternative competitor was the infinitely superior C.P.M.

Your information does not seem to assist with relocating the monstrous Shared Documents, BUT my daughter's profile is responsible for a large amount of "Used Space" - so the next time she logs in I will ask her how much is taken by her documents.

Windows protects her privacy, and I cannot even see how large her documents folder is.
Question, If her documents are moved to a different partition on the same internal drive, will Windows maintain that privacy (either by default, or by special action) ?

[attachment deleted by admin]hmm, interesting- is a junction point similar to creating a hard link to a folder?Patio

I look forward to seeing your results.

Restore Points and Disk Compression space wastage mysteries ! !

When I do a Disc Cleanup I like to see what is happening.

On the right hand side of Windows Explorer I view the contents of
C:\System Volume Information\_restore{F6EA6CAA-B744-447E-8F9E-B9A9507C7CB4}
This shows me all the Restore Point folders that gobble up the disc.
On the left side I right click C:\ for disk properties, and go for Disk Cleanup.
More options allows me to purge all Restore Points bar the last - and on the right hand side I see them disappear EVEN BEFORE I CLICK APPLY - I only have to click O.K. to close this sub-window and the Restore Points are zapped, and then I get the Disc Properties  again with "Apply" available (not greyed out) - BUT IT HAS ALREADY ZAPPED THE R.P.
Does no-one at M.$. use Windows - do the all have Apples on their desks ! !

As disc cleanup proceeds, I like to see in real time the removal of old R.P., and also observe the accuracy of the space saving predictions by watch Free Space.
When Old Files are compressed it always overestimates space saving - it can even REDUCE FREE SPACE.
This is because Windows does not trust its own NTFS compression, and every exe/dll/etc,etc/ that is considered an important system file is protected by Windows File Protection (W.F.P.)  Every "old" file that is compressed is considered by W.F.P., and if it is important and there is no copy within dllcache it makes an UNCOMPRESSED copy to dllcache, so where there had been only one copy of the file (uncompressed), we now have a compressed version in the original folder plus an uncompressed copy in dllcache.

Another mystery :-
I can create an Acronis image.
Then reboot into safe mode and Disc Cleanup to do NOTHING other than compress old files.
Because I am in Safe mode W.F.P. does not duplicate into dllcache.
Reboot into normal mode and create another Acronis image.

I forget the exact figures, but the second image might be 100 MBytes larger than the first, even though there was zero difference in the amount of information. - the only difference was that the larger Acronis image corresponded to the system Partition with 500 MBytes extra FREE SPACE.
I have since observed that it is not just an Acronis peculiarity - if I copy 500 MBytes of DLL's etc to C:\TEST I then can copy C:\TEST to various folders in D:\ (also NTFS)
I can also compress C:\TEST and again copy it to more folders in D:\
Then I can visit each of these D:\ folders - each of which is uncompressed as it was copied.  Then I can compress some of them.
Then I select all the objects within each folder and inspect properties.
In every case the "size" is consistently exactly correctly what it should be.
For the compressed folders the "size on disk" varies it seems as if identical information is compressed with different efficiencies depending upon where the information came from and its history along the route.
N.B. C:\ and D:\ are both NTFS with identical cluster sizes.
I suspect the "size on disk" may include some special stuff I know almost nothing about ( I am aware of A.D.S. and Metadata - and no doubt there is more ).

My head hurts.
Excuse my whilst I sit in a corner and quietly whimper ! !

BC_Programmer

Yes - similar, perhaps the same.

I knew nothing about these until very recently.

After much Googling, and almost as much forgetting, I have the impression that
"Reparse Points" is a generic term for various redirection objects;
"Hard Links" and "Folder Junctions" and "Symbolic Links" (Symlinks) are slightly different variants;
The Internet is a wonderful source of disinformation,
and "Hard Links" can sometimes be used as a name for Folder Junctions.

I think officially a "Hard Link" is like a crippled Folder junction.
They both do exactly the same if the repository target is on the same partition as this reparse point.
The Folder Junction (but not a Hard Link) is able to access repositories in other partitions.
Folder Junction appears to meet my needs, so I have not yet researched Symlinks, but somewhere I came across a suggestion that it is possible to access partitions on different physical drives.

I use the free version of xplorer2.
Some capabilities are restricted to the professional version,
but Folder Junctions are generously provided.

Useful references upon xplorer2 and Folder Junctions are available at
http://www.zabkat.com/blog/07Oct07.htm
http://www.zabkat.com/blog/19Oct08-redirect-outlook-pst-folder.htm

Internet disinformation :-
I read that a Folder Junction in an NTFS partition can target a FAT32 folder.
Actually it can, but I found that the created Folder junction target was NOT accessible through the Folder Junction.  Total waste of time and effort.
I assume that Windows XP is looking at this "folder" within an NTFS partition,
and goes mental when it finds the "contents" are in FAT32.
I have multiple partitions, both NTFS and FAT32.
I now know that a NTFS to FAT32 BRIDGE collapses.
I will carefully test any NTFS to NTFS bridge if the two partitions have different cluster sizes - if it can go wrong it will - especially if M.$. is involved ! !

Regards
Alan
Actually- the reason "hard links" (junction points and so forth) wouldn't work with FAT32 is quite simple- the filesystem doesn't support it. Hard links are actually part of the Filesystem, so I would suspect that is the reason for it not working under fat32.

Solve : MS VISTA?

Answer»

HOW I BYPAAS MS VISTA SECURITY FEATURES, WHEN I INSTALL ANY APPLICATION ON IT?Say what?

Are you talking about Windows Defender or whatever it's called? You shouldn't need to, if you're the administrator then you just put in the admin password and you're golden. The only reason to 'bypass' the security FEATURE would be to do something that you're not MEANT to be doing.
