Solve : host of issues!?

Answer»

Ok...
can't even login to chat board on here......
when i TRY to login to aol via WEBMAIL......the username and password are blanck
I can't RESPOND to email on Facebook...and the send and back buttons are inactive
when i try chat rooms on YAHOO...I get in but I am the only one in room...it is blank
I downloaded aol 9.1 last night, (to try and get my mail that way) and now I keep getting some blank pop up screen in the upper left corner....
I checked Java to see if it was enabled and says yes....I even download the update....

this all happened after somehow in trying to unistall kapersky internet protection software, and my computer was suddenly out of almost all memory........i unstalled a ton of files, pictures ect...and reformatted the hard drive.....

Please help!
We still have no idea about what machine or what OS or what happened prior to this to go on...it is a toshiba satellite.....running vista with ie 7.....

prior to the issues I stated...nothing was wrong....this happend all after trying to uninstall Kapersky internet protection....and reforamtting hard driveWhat internet security features (Antivirus, antisyware, pop-up blocker etc.) do you have installed now?I think (but I'm not positive) that this could be a Java issue.  The chat board here uses Ajax (asynchronous JavaScript and XML) and I believe the other issues you are experiencing are also related to Ajax and/or Java.

Try this javatester web page and let US know what you get.

Solve : Blank screen at startup?

Answer»
I am getting a blank screen now at startup on my Dell Latitude 400. I do get the Windows XP screen then when it should display the USERS screen, nothing?Do you have virus protection? Have you installed any new hardware/software lately?

[glb]Flame[/glb]Yes, Norton antivirus.

If you have the OS installation disk you can run the RECOVER console by booting thru the disk to the setup screen and pressing "R".
That will take you to what looks like DOS and can type "Help"
Look for the function called Bootfix (verify the actual file name) then type that and have it replace your system boot up and see if that helps.
goodluckhmm, I can't type the letters Help in. They don't show up at the cursor. Is that why its called a "cursor"?

Geoff[size=16]Curses!  Foiled again![/size]

Well, not yet.  Your keyboard may just be having problems.  Try unplugging and plugging the keyboard back in.  If that doesn't work, try blowing the crumbs out from under the keys with a can of compressed air from an electronics store.  If it still won't work, buy a new keyboard at Wal-Mart for under $10.00, or get one used for under $4.00 at a computer repair shop.  If that doesn't work, purchase a USB keyboard to use instead.

Regards,
Doc

Is the battery flat??use the adapter......It can go into safemode but if I try to load normally it stops right before the User window and the screen is black.
AC is plugged in and battery is charged.Geoffrey, you seem to be having the exact same problem that 'm having.  the screen just stays blank right?  no users screen or desktop, neither show up.  if you fix this problem, please post EXACTLY what you did here (or in my post).
the only new thing that i can recall now is there were UPDATES being installed for xp when i shut it down in the last few days.  but that wouldn't cause this all of a sudden, eh?

edit: Geoff--how long did it take for yours to startup in Safe MODE?  I'm gonna try it again, but mine wouldn't display anything in safe mode either

Geoffrey:

So, are you saying your keyboard works when you boot to Safe Mode but it does *not* work when you boot to the Recovery Console?

Doc

The symtoms is- The computer starts up shows the XP screen then goes Black not blue or grey. the hardrive is running doing something. Dell sent out a new motherboard and installed it. This should fix it they said as the Dell tech couldn't reflash the BIOS.    Nope, same problem.

I have re-installed XP too.oh, some of the keys didnt work while in recovery console. wierd.arh new mobo........check the graphics card is seated PROPERLY......refer to the manual to check it out......I can't figure out how the laptop comes apart.....tried taking all the screws out but I don't want to force it/break it.

Solve : how to fix blank screen?

Answer»

;D ;)Hi everyone i have noticed loads of people on this site have been posting comments on how to get rid of blank screen well i know how to fix and i have signed up on this site specially for people with blank screen and wondering how to get rid .

1. The monitor is turned OFF or the cables are disconnected. This could happen at any time during the lifecycle of the computer. Or maybe the system has gone into power conserving mode. Perform the following checks:

a. Power cycle the monitor (turn OFF and then ON) and wait for a minute or two to see if screen lights up.
b. Wiggle the mouse or press ENTER on the keyboard and watch the display screen.
c. Check the power supply to the monitor and the cables connecting the monitor to the computer.
d. Check that there is a connection between the keyboard and the computer. If the keyboard is not connected or if it has just been hosed, or if the computer restart has not initialized the keyboard before it stopped and gave you the blank screen, then your none of the keys work!
e. After the above checks, restart the computer and see if it is okay.

2. A component in the computer (such as a graphics card) may have overheated. In older computers, the fans were very powerful (remember the loud computers of yesteryears?). Now the manufacturers assume that computers sit in air-conditioned comfort all day. So they have reduced the power of these fans that are used to cool the hardware. Follow these procedures to see if that is the problem.

a. Shut down your computer and monitor.
b. Turn on the air-conditioning and install an additional fan in the room if possible
c. After a pause of 15 – 30 minutes, restart the monitor and then the computer.
d. If it was a problem of overheating, the computer screen should now show the system booting normally.

3. If you have just installed the computer and nothing seems to work, it could a bad monitor or a low power supply.

a. Check if the monitor light is green, orange, yellow or red. Get the manual for the monitor to find out what these colors mean.
b. Swap the monitor with another if you have an extra one at home.
c. Insert a music CD into its drive and check if you can hear audio. This will only happen if the CD is set to Auto Run. If you can hear audio, it means the computer is running ok.
d. Find a different power supply outlet (or power strip) for the monitor and computer and try to reboot the computer again.
e. If the LCD screen on the monitor is dead, then it’s impossible to see if the computer is booting up or to what point it has booted up.
f. Replace your monitor if it’s defective or continue to Step 4 if you still have problems.

4. Recent Hardware Changes. Corrupt drivers for any recently installed hardware can crash the system. To get rid of the corrupted drivers, do the following:

a. Uninstall all recently added hardware.
b. Try to restore the system to a previous restore point
c. Reboot the system and return to a previous stable configuration if possible
d. Remove all external peripherals (PRINTER, cameras, scanners, etc) and connections until the computer returns to normal.

5. Bad video/graphics card. At this point, if your computer is still under warranty, its time to call for help. If not, you can get a computer geek to come to your house (it is cheaper to take your computer to their store) or try to fix the problem yourself.

a. Is AGP/PCI video card compatible with your operating system? If you are experienced with opening up the chassis and resetting cards, reseat the video card, and try again.
b. Check the pins on the cable connectors and see that they are not bent or broken.
c. NEVER attempt to open the monitor. Turn on the monitor and try to reboot the computer again. If this doesn’t work, go to Step 6.

6. BIOS – the Binary Operating System may be corrupted – Use of Safe Mode to boot system.

a. Try starting the computer in the safe mode. Restart the computer and see the point to which it boots up before you get the blank screen.
b. Press F8 as the computer starts to boot. (For HP and Compaq computers with VISTA, use F10, For HP Pavilions with XP or earlier version of OS, use F1). Use the arrow keys to select the safe mode and press Enter. Remember that NUM LOCK should be OFF for the arrow keys to function.
c. If Windows launches before you can choose the safe mode, restart computer and go to step a.
d. You can choose “Safe mode with command prompt” option if you know how to use MS-DOS
e. You can choose “Last known good configuration” to go back to the last known safe shutdown state.
f. If you have added any drivers or corrupted any files the last time you used the computer, the safe mode will help you get back to the state before the changes, when the computer was running smoothly.

7. BIOS – the booting software may be corrupted – Use of Recovery Console to boot system

a. If the recovery console is already installed on the system, one of the options you see while the system is initially booting up will be “Microsoft Windows Recovery Console”. If it’s not already on the system, it can ALSO be accessed through the network during “command prompt with network” option in safe mode.
b. Recovery console can also be installed at the time of need from the CD-ROM. Go to the following link for additional info : http://support.microsoft.com/kb/301645
c. Recovery console helps to Enable or disable services. If Windows informs us during boot up that a file is corrupted or missing, then we can use the Recovery console to copy files from a CD to the computer to repair the corrupted or missing information.
d. You can also recover the system by reconfiguring a service that may be preventing your computer from starting correctly. (FIXMBR, FIXBOOT, etc)
e. For a list of Recovery Console commands, search : http://www.microsoft.com/

8. Corrupted Operating System. – Try an upgrade of the current Operating System.

a. Before you re-install the operating system, check out http://support.microsoft.com/kb/312369/
b. Try to upgrade the current operating system by inserting the CD-ROM and choosing “Upgrade” in the “Installation Type” box and then click next
c. Continue as detailed in http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315341/EN-US/ to complete the upgrade.
d. If there were patches or updates to the previous version of the OS that fixed booting problems or missing files, then the computer should be fixed and good to go. If not, repeat with step e
e. Alternately, to re-install the OS, when the message “Press any key to boot from CD” appears, tap the spacebar.
f. Press ENTER to setup XP on the computer (fresh start- all setting go back to default)
g. On the LICENSE screen, press F8 to agree to the license agreement.
h. Select your current installation and press R to repair the installation.

9. Hard Disk Crash. This is one of the major reasons for black screens. A new computer will run reasonably well for about 2 – 3 years. After that, we’d better take precautions to manage our information in case of a disk crash. Backups are handy in case we need to re-install or replace a hard disk. To check if it’s the hard disk, do the following:

a. Turn the computer on and listen to see if the fan is running.
b. After doing all the checks above to see if the peripherals (especially the monitor) are in good working condition, restart the computer again

10. Motherboard Problems.

a. Open the chassis. Turn the computer on and verify that the CPU fan and the power supply and the fan are running. If not, make sure that the connections are tight and replace the power supply.
b. Shutdown the computer and let it cool down. Unplug all cables from power sources.
c. Closely examine the mother board and see that it is NOT in contact with the computer case.
d. Removed and re-install your DRAM
e. Remove the CPU and re-install it.
f. Reset your BIOS to the default configuration following the motherboard’s manual instructions.
g. Make sure that you have replaced every item that you had removed from the chassis, close it and try to start it up
h.

If none of the above works its either the power supply thats burnt out which it probely wont be whcih i found out ages ago .

I AM SORRY TO SAY EVERYONE IF THE ABOVE DOESNT WORK ITS TIME TO GET A NEW CPU=CENTRAL PROCESSING UNIT.
becouse thats the only thing left you have burnt the cpu out.
you will need to buy a new one but when you get a new one i would reccomend you to get more fans for inside your case to keep the cpu cool incase this happens again.
You can get cheap cpu off amzon,EBAY,pcworld,ewoc.com.
Hope this solves the problem everyone and have a nice day

Copying and Pasting? I'm afraid that's not the way to go.

It would have been better to post that link and get rid of your last paragraph.

Solve : Vista - pictures problem?

Answer»

Yes, I do have Comcast TV Cable. Phone service isn't available in my area.
DFI remember some similar cases from people using Outlook EXPRESS. When they forwarded an email with pictures included, the pictures were not showing in recipient's mail. I don't RECALL any solution, but the workaround only: pictures had to saved to sender's drive, and then re-attached.That's the conclusion I have come to but that's a pain.  Trying to get Comcast to return my call. If I find out anything I will post it. Tnx. DF Quote

So I am waiting, again, for Comcast to call me. Still have the problem. Tnx, all. DixieflashAt least you finally got a live ONE...I can bet $5, nobody will call you.
Call again, and if they give you BS again, ask for person's name, and badge number, then ask for second level support.

Solve : Annoying error message?

Answer»

Hi. Can you tell me how I get rid of this annoying error message that APPEARS everytime I sign into live messenger after booting up. If it helps I downloaded internet explorer 8 beta recently then uninstalled it a few days ago after I started getting the blue screen of death. Since reverting back to IE7 I get that error message everytime I log into messenger after start up and don't get the small web window that usually appears when you start messenger.

Thanks

[Saving space - attachment deleted by admin] Quote

I downloaded internet explorer 8 beta
By now, you know, that running beta programs on main computer is not a good idea.
Try System Restore. My system restore on Vista only goes back to the 26th September - I installed IE8 beta abut 4/5 weeks ago before that. Is there any way to restore to an earlier time after you have already selected 'show resore points older then 5 days' so I can restore to beofre I installed IE8 beta.

ThanksUninstall Messenger:
   1. Click Start -> Run, type control in the dialog box and click Ok
   2. Click Add or Remove Programs
   3. Click Add/Remove Windows Components from the section on the left
   4. Toward the bottom of the list, uncheck Windows Messenger
   5. Click NEXT and follow any additional prompts to complete the uninstall and to remove any traces of the old Microsoft Messenger.

Download fresh copy.

Disable UAC:
   1. Click on Start -> Control Panel -> User Accounts and Family Safety -> User Accounts -> Turn User Account Control On or Off.
   2. Uncheck the box next to “Use User Account Control (UAC) to help PROTECT your computer”
   3. Click on “OK”.
   4. It will say you need to reboot, and it isn’t kidding so GO ahead and reboot.
   5. Once you’ve rebooted into Vista, install Windows Messenger, and then follow the same instructions above, this time placing the check in the box, to re-enable UAC.

didn't work I'm AFRAID. Does anyone else know how to get rid of that annoying error message attached to original post when starting MSN messenger up? It comes up intead of the accompanying web window that opens with messenger at sign in. What does BSOD say?

Solve : What do I need? (Laptop Question)?

Answer»

Hi everyone.

Let me first say I am not technical.

I am a single mom if a toddler. (with a deadbeat ex-husband)  I use Ebay as my way of supporting my self and little girl. Anyway, while I am out & about I FIND things that I think would be good sellers. The problem is I can not check until I get home to my PC. If the item seems to sell often on Ebay, I have to double back to go and buy it. (GAS & TIME WASTER!!)  I would love to get a laptop.

My issue: I DO NOT want/need a laptop for games or music or even movies. I just need something with a decent size screen (over 14"-15" prefered) which is able to get quick internet access while I am out on the road searching for goodies to sell. (WITHOUT spending a big paycheck that I do not have)

Best Buy, Circuit City, Amazon.com etc. all have nice laptops but they do way more than I need. I am terrified of 'Refurbished' great Ebay deals. (But I am Tempted!!!) I do not know much about 'GIGS', 'Ram' & 'Ram' and all that other IMPORTANT stuff either.

I would think the prices have to be high because of what is inside the machine. Can ANYONE out there explain a way or a place that I can get a Laptop for little money which only needs to have the internet access installed on it. (Does this even exist?)      Also, what do you think about refurbs or even excellent used condition on Ebay?? Is there any specific hidden THINGS i must look with these AUCTIONS  or anything to avoid?

MANY THANKS GUYS!!
I can help you with choosing a laptop, but I have a quick question.

Quote

I just need something with a decent size screen (over 14"-15" prefered) which is able....
15" Screen laptop?
My laptop has a 15" screen and it is one of the biggest laptops I have seen in my school.
Are you sure you want something that big for just checking the internet?Hi there,

I really don't know. I just don't want a screen so small that the entire spage will either not fit on the screen without having to scroll left & right etc.  OR  I have to strain to see. If you say 15" is not small, I am open to any help.

THANKS!!!All right.

I would head down to your local computer store and just have a look at the computers on display and see what you like best (so you have an idea what you would like to get and what size you would like it to be).

As for the specifications ("RAM and Gigs and stuff"), Here is a brief run-down on what you may want.

Note: New computer would most likely be Windows Vista. Used computer may be Windows XP.

RAM - Random Access Memory --> Depending on the Operating System, the laptop should have at least 512mb for Windows XP and 1GB for Windows Vista.

Hard Drive --> For what you said you will be doing, you don't need much. My laptop only has an 80GB hard drive and although I would like more, it's plenty. (You may want to consider more than 80GB for Windows Vista)

Processor --> At least 1.6Hz recommended for Windows XP and 2.2GHz for Windows Vista.

That is based on what you said about wanting the laptop just to use the internet.
When you go looking for laptops, there may be more information (like Video Card, Sound Card, CD Drive, Wireless, ect...). Feel free to ask about any of them here.

Example: My laptop http://www.notebookreview.com/default.asp?newsID=3391&review=Lenovo+C200Wow! Good info. Thanks.

I had purchased a mini tower HP with Vista and hated it. I returned it. Will I have a problem or have only a few years of use if I choose XP over Vista??? Or will XP be around for a long time. ??

Also, I was reading Ebay auctions and one looked nice. It had a 'Docking Station". What is that and do I need one?

So many laptops on Ebay state the battery is not guaranteed to hold a charge. What is that about? Are they very costly??

DeeCheck-->Here

You battery is usually so expensive, if you get a used laptop then a battery,
you could have bought a new laptop.Just to answer a few more questions of yours.

Not sure exactly when, but Windows XP support is supposed to stop in 2011 or something, not sure. Don't worry, I don't plan on changing Operating Systems any time soon.
I am sure XP will be around for a long time, the same way people still use Windows 2000.

Quote
Also, I was reading Ebay auctions and one looked nice. It had a 'Docking Station". What is that and do I need one?
Can I see the link please.
Personally, I don't see the need for docking stations. You're probably only going to have it in your house and never move it.
Quote

Not sure. It is true batteries may lose their efficiency, but I don't see that being an issue (at least not for me). Batteries can be pricey though....

2014 actually.

Story HereThanks Patio.You got it.

Solve : VERY strange Internet problem?

Answer»

The only things I see that looks kinda wonky is the proxy section and the auto configure entry. What's up with the strange GARBAGE chars? Oh, also check out the winsock entry. "O10 - Unknown file in Winsock LSP: c:\windows\system32\nwprovau.dll" Hmm...

*edit* nwprovau.dll seems to be related to netware. Don't know if they use netware or not, but my guess is not. Still kinda suspicious of the garbage chars.

THAT DID IT! Saved the reg keys for Proxy and re-set them to defaults and now I have Internet. No wonder, it was looking for a nonexistent proxy with a garbage address. I wonder what caused that in the first place? Also, one would think that would have been changed when I re-set up the connection. Very strange. Oh well, working now. Many thanks Broni!I'm glad, it worked
BTW, nwprovau.dll entry is safe.Yea, figured as much after a little research. I left it alone.

Solve : Computer being very strange...what should I do??

Answer»

Quote from: Broni on November 02, 2008, 12:39:37 PM

It's clean.
Try my previous advice about "sfc".

I just TRIED that, and it asked me to insert the Windows CD. However, when I got out the folder of paperwork that came with my laptop, there was no Windows CD. All that was in there was a card from Dell that says: "Your new computer does not require an opertating system CD or drivers CDs. Instead, if you ever need to reinstall your software, use one of the following methods: Microsoft Windows System Restore or Dell PC Restore."Well, I think, you have two options:
1. GET (buy,  borrow) Windows CD to perform "sfc" command, and eventually Windows repair.
2. Back up your data, and use Dell's Recovery PARTITION to reinstall Windows.

I am sure it is OK.Try Vista CD in ANOTHER computer (see, if you can boot with it).
Run memtest.Yes, I can.
We have a total of three desktops at home with Vista installed. The PROBLEM unit belongs to my son. His brother has the identical Dell desktop unit here sharing the same desk. It is via this unit I am comunicating now with you.
I can try any method to try to fix it as you direct me to.Did you disable Integrated NIC boot in BIOS?
Did you run memtest?
Also, there are some hits on Google about "The amount of system memory has changed" error: http://www.google.com/search?q=The+amount+of+system+memory+has+changed&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-aRun memtest? Please explain how etc.Are you reading my replies?

Is there anything I can do though just for a little more kick from it? There's always something you can do.

Your upgrade possibilities, as I see them, with benefits/drawbacks:

SSD instead of HDD - much faster storage - but, very expensive if you want any sort of capacity.
Faster HDD - faster storage access - but, could be expensive, could also be loud.
Quad core CPU - faster for multiple tasks or MULTI threaded programs, the computer will possibly feel more responsive - but, could be expensive, cooling might not cope, motherboard might not support it, PSU might not be up to it.
Upgraded graphics card - faster 3D performance - but, could work out expensive to get a decent upgrade, cooling PROBABLY wouldn't cope, PSU probably wouldn't cope.
64 bit OS - 64 bit applications will run faster, OS may feel snappier, ability to access more RAM - but, some programs and hardware may be incompatible.
Upgrade RAM - computer may feel smoother - but, probably wouldn't notice any actual performance increase EXCEPT on very demanding apps (e.g. working with massive images in Photoshop whilst encoding a video or something) and you'd need a 64 bit OS to use any more RAM.

Does that help?

Solve : creating shortcut?

Answer»

How do I eliminate the "do you want to CREATE a shortcut to desktop"  YES or no box that appears after clicking "create desktop shortcut" with a right mouse click?
If I didn't want to create the shortcut I wouldn't have selected it in the first place.  Create Desktop Shortcut? Where is this? (or is this Vista?)This is using XP.   You know like when you are on any web page and you want to put a shortcut to that page on the desktop you right click and get the menu.  You select "create shortcut".  But then I get this box I don't want that says "Do you want this shortcut PLACED on the desktop."  How do I eliminate this additional message/question?   Thanks!Ah, you mean in Internet Explorer.

Google didn't help much, and I'm not a regular IE user, so I am afraid I can't be much help here. (HOPEFULLY someone will be along shortly with a definite answer, but I don't think it can be removed)

Does this really bug you? Try doing it a different way...

Click and hold the link you want to save, and drag it onto an open space on the desktop. This should create a shortcut straight away.Unless it's the current page you want to link to, in which case you can drag the Tab to the Desktop.

I have been having a problem with my Gateway T-1616 laptop. I have Vista as my OS. My COMP crashes and the screen gets all messed up looking. I have a picture I took from one time it happened.

here is the pic.

It happened while on the Gateway screen screen before the vista startup that time but it doesn't only occur on startup. It will happen anytime including in safe mode. I have no clue what is causing this problem and would appreciate if anyone could help me find out what is causing the problem and how to fix it.Any hardware changes lately?
What video card? The only change is I upgraded my ram from 1GB to 2gb but I was already having the problem before that.
It has a ATI Radeon X1270  video cardTry hooking up an external monitor on it and see if it does the same thing.
If it does re-install the MBoard and video drivers from the Driver CD that shipped with the laptop.
Has this machine been dropped recently ? ?

If the video chip is going bad it can only be fixed at the shop...sorry.actually it now has took a turn for the worse and WONT even turn on so i am sending it BACK to gateway to hopefully get it fixed. I had already SENT it there for the same problem but they never fixed it. all they did was reformat the hard drive.Best of Luck to you...

Solve : can I drop Windows Mail ???

Answer»

Got a new Compaq notebook with Windows Vista about four months ago....nothing but problems with  Windows mail which seems to be CORRUPTING all other default mail boxes that I attempt to set.

Can I uninstall Windows Mail and still SEND and recieve email with on a default of my choice?  You can't uninstall Windows Mail, but you can always use another mail program. I recommend Thunderbird. Thanks BRONI, but I've already tried it... back in day one when I first turned the computer on.  Frankly I've not heard of anyone having problems with Thunderbird, but it sure didn't perform properly for me, as likewise all others that I've tried. I therefore maintain that Windows Mail is the culprit because it seems to have a constant host of problems all of it's own.

I THINK I'll get rid of the whole clatter and get an Apple system.   It'd be obviously HELPFUL, if you can be more specific what actual problems are, especially with TB, because I'm not familiar with Windows Mail.Thunderbird is probably one of the easiest e-mail apps to set up and use...can you be more specific on what your issues were ? ?

A friend gave me his tower to try and FIX and hopefully someone here can help me. I have not attached my monitor yet, but he plugged it in and pressed the power button on. It begins to power up and then shuts right back off. Anyone have any ideas on what could be CAUSING this and how to fix it. I would like some idea if there are any "F" buttons I need to press as soon as I push the power button on or any other suggestions you may have. This computer is only a few months OLD and is using Vista. THANKS in advance for your help. Most times this is because the CPU is overheating and it's shutting down to prevent frying itself...
Carefully remove a side panel and power up and see if all fans are operating normally and we'll go from there.
You don't want to do this too many times.

Solve : Stuck in a loop on startup?

Answer»

Well I'm glad you called that out because it's a false alarm lol.

It let me get to my desktop once but I went to shutdown my computer and it installed those updates again and tried to restart itself.  Now I've got the same exact problem as before but with a BIGGER taste of defeat.  OK. What exactly did you do after booting with Recovery Disc.
Please, re-read my reply #2 for options.I put in the disc and selected windows and my english KEYBOARD.  Then I clicked "repair your computer".  It recognized the vista on my hard drive and I clicked next.  I was never given the screen with all of the TOOLS, it just scanned and then asked me if I wanted to preform a system restore so I clicked ok. It did all of its work and then I could get onto my desktop.  I was prompted to restart from my desktop and when I did it re-installed/tried to configure this update. Are you saying, that you didn't get this:

and then this:

??I got that first picture with the vista/partition thing but when I clicked next it just starts to do a restore. After it finishes that it says click finish to restart now.  If the repairs were successful it will start normally.  Did it in another post for less quote-modify confusion. Are you getting any date selection with System Restore? Not at all.  It lets me click finish and when it restarts windows seems to work perfectly fine.  It's once that windows update installs on shutdown that the problem starts again.  You see what I mean right?Right now I'm on the computer in question and right next to this windows theres a microsoft windows message saying I must restart to apply these changes: restart now or restart later.  I'm just going to let it sit on my desktop. While in Windows, try System Restore again, and select different date.Alright I did it from the 4th and everything seems to be as it wsa before this update of doom (as I so affectionately refer to it now)
Is this going to stop it from trying to update it again or will it occur in as many days as I just set it back?
Disregard the lack of a restart prompt if you managed to read that, it popped up right after I hit save.I can go into the available updates menu and unselect the update but I'm not sure if that would solve the problem or cause me more harm later.First of all, set new restore point.
Secondly, try to restart, and see, if everything is OK (if something happens, now you know what to do, you have Recovery Disc, and new Restore Point).
Thirdly, updates will keep bothering you. You should switch updates option to "Notify me...", instead of "automatic INSTALL". Then you can try install those updates one-by-one, instead of all of them at the same time.

Post back on progress.I CREATED a restore point for right now and that was successful.  Restarted my computer and it started up with no hitches what so-ever.  Changed the settings to tell me about updates but don't install until given the go ahead.

Seems to be working just as before thanks for the help.  Now I'll know exactly what steps to take in the future when I run into problems.  Glad it worked because I was running out of cd's to burn things onto.

Thanks for your contributions everybody. At least, I can go to bed with peace of my mind....LOL
Good job

Solve : bypassing windows password?

Answer»

i have a dell inspirion 1420 laptop with windows vista that i got from a friend. there is a windows password, but no ONE knows what the password is. also the guest ACCOUNT is not active. whats the easiest way to bypass the password without re-loading windows? Since you just got the computer, it might be a good idea to reformat the computer. It will make it run much faster. NO  Do not reformat a laptop until you have all the things at hand that you need.
And yes, there is a way to remove the password. It can be done by booting up the laptop with a CD that lets you read the files system of the Hard Drive. A Linux 'Live' CD can be used for this. You dig into the files system and find the file that contains the password and just delete it. I have only done this once,  so I will let somebody else tell you how to do it safely. You might want to remove the Hard drive and do it with another computer, a desktop.  [link Removed - Carbon]

Try the software, it's freeware now and it says 100% recovery RATE. I might be wrong here but I thought we weren't supposed to help bypass passwords here on this forum

You are not wrong, the 2 previous POSTERS to you ought to know better, and this thread has been reported.

Thank you Dias.

You two are absolutely right. We are not supposed to help people bypass Windows Password because, for one, we cannot tell if the problem is as ben08817 says it is and two, this information will be posted on a public forum where anyone, including those troublemakers, can find.

Mcxeb52, I'm going to remove your link.We will help to reset passwords, or remove them (actually, I refuse to... but, thats besides the point) but we will not supply programs or methods of finding out what the current/previous password was/is (revealing the password), since that is a huge gigantic security risk that no one here wants to support, unless you are a Unix programmer from 1950. Solve : Getting stuck at the loading screen?

Answer»

I have an Asus laptop, model G1S. Its has wondows vista and ive had it for about 10 months. I was running a computer game and tried to open an internet page in the backround (something ive done many other times) but for some reason it completely froze up and i had to shut it down. Since then i cant GET past my loading screen...in other words, i turn it on and i get the little Asus opening VISUAL. then im taken to  menu that has this message " Windows failed to START. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause." then below that it says " If windows files have been damages or sonfigured incorrectly, Startup Repair can help diagnose and fix the problem. If power was interrupted during startup, choose 'start windows normally' ". Below this i have two option. the first being " Launch Startup Repair (recommended)", when i try this...it does nothing. the screen goes blank for a second or two. then it just brings up the same menu. So im forced to pick the second option, being "start windows normally". After i select this option I am taken a loading page that always comes up when the computer is starting. It usually loads for about 10 seconds thentakes me to the login screen. But instead of doing that it just stays at the loading page.  For hours. After two or three hours i eventually getting the blue "error has occured" screen and it shuts down and i start all over.

I dont think i have any of the disks that came with it. And when i try to restore the computer (by holding F9, which usually brings me to the restoration page after the loading screen) its ignores the command completely..and just keeps "loading".
Im POSTING here because even though geeksquad and the asus Help people have suggested BRINGING it in for a repair...i wasnt able to articulate my problem very well and i dont think they fully understood my problem. If there is any sequence of keys or command i can use to try and restore or just at least get it past the loading screen, i would apprececiate if someone could let me know.
Ive never had this problem before and never heard of it happening to anyone, nor could i find a similair problem online.
Any suggestions?
If my description confused anyone or didnt make sense...or if you need a better visual let me know.
sorrry for any Sp errors dont really wanna go back and check
I will guess you need to recover windows with the CD for windows or whatever was supplied when you bought it. If its under warranty then try that 1st if you have no other way to boot.If it's a laptop and it's 10 months old it is still under warranty...
I'd suggest this route but tell them you would like to save your data if possible.

Solve : Vista won't boot after chkdsk?

Answer»

I wanted to install linux, but when I went to resize the partition it said that there were errors on the drive and I should run chkdsk. I did so and it found some errors and finished. Now, Vista doesn't boot. It "freezes" right before the login screen, however I can still move the mouse and turn NUM lock on and off. I tried safe mode and the same thing happens. I don't have a Vista DVD but I do have the recovery DISKS that came with the computer. I've tried to start task manager but that didn't work. I'd prefer not to use them because I don't want to lose everything...Depends on what flavor of Linux you are experimenting with...
Chances are it installed the GRUB bootloader for this so provide more details...I didn't install linux yet, I was making the partitions for it but I couldn't because Gparted said that there were errors on the drive. I then ran chkdsk from windows and then this happened.

Also, I found this: http://forums.techarena.in/vista-help/747332-2.htm

It seems to me this is the problem I have because when I did the chkdsk it found 2 errors and then it made HUNDREDS of thousands of changes to security descriptors. So fixing this seems kinda hopeless to me... Here's the plan at the moment: I'm gonna find a CD drive, install it, boot up the Ubuntu live CD and burn whatever I need to save like music and docs to DVDs using the drive that's already in there. Then I'll use the recovery CD to restore the computer to factory state and then resize the partition and install Ubuntu alongside the fresh Vista install.OK.Everything is working now, THANKS for the help. Good NEWS indeed.

Have you made any recent CHANGES to the computer - driver updates, installed software, installed hardware, etc?

Turn off the wireless - any change?

Try updating the driver for your Atheros Wireless.I began receiving BSOD around 9/16/2008.  Mostly IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL but sometimes other errors, sometimes no specific error at all, just bluescreen.

They would occur for a day or so and then stop for awhile until Oct. 30 when it started HAPPENING very regularly.  I took the PC to a technican for diagnosis.  They thought it was somehow USB related but couldn't pinpoint the cause.  They suggested making sure all drivers are up-to-date.

Long story short... I have a Belkin Wireless G USB Network Adapter that was updated to use the new driver ATHRUSB.SYS.  The Belkin driver update site stated this was the updated driver for Windows Vista, and many other OS's.  On Nov. 8, I uninstalled & reinstalled the Belkin adapter using the CD that came with the device (driver BLKWGU.SYS) and I have experienced ZERO bluescreens.  I will not be updating the driver for this device.Reever

Solve : Need help. Users problem?

Answer»

I have a problem when i create a new user account. I will log on to that account and it will say preparing desktop, the normal thing it says when a new user is logging on. Once logged on i will add a shortcut to the desktop and it works. When i log off and log back on, it says preparing desktop....as if it was a new user! When logged on, the desktop is empty, only having the starting icons. When i go to the desktop folder for that user, it still has those shortcuts in there, they just aren't on the actual desktop.

Now...for a little background info that might help with an answer.

I was using Vista home edition until recently i got my hands on Vista Ultimate. When installing i did not get the option to just upgrade and keep all my files the same, i had to choose the option of installing like it was a new OS. So it MOVED all my files into Windows.old. When Ultimate was INSTALLED i just copied everything out of Windows.old into the appropriate places in the new folders. Including the users...i figured it might create the users, but it didn't. Once everything was copied over i made new users and now I'm stuck with this problem.

Just a SIDE note, this problem doesn't occur on the main account that was FIRST created when installing Ultimate. Everything works fine on that account, this problem only occurs with newly created accounts.

Any help is appreciated....thanksI can say that windows likes to do most things its way. There are migration tools to do what you wanted to do automatically in regard to users being migrated. All I can say is to stop MANUALLY trying to adjust things and look into it farther before you begin an install. You actually need an upgrade version of the latest windows you installed over the previous one.  I don’t have a fixall answer at this time but wanted to share this with you before you make a similar mistake.

Solve : System Restore Popup is blank?

Answer»

I removed several programs and installed SP3 on my XP computer at the same time. Now the System Restore pop-up is blank so I can’t restore my system to an earlier time This happens when in a normal Windows session or when working in ‘Safe Mode’.

Also my ‘HELP’ doesn't work and ‘search’ window opens but doesn’t have any text. A few of my emails have graphics, but no text.

When I went through the ‘Microsoft’s System Restore Troubleshooting steps’ to check free space ‘run diskmgmt.msc’ the error message ‘Microsoft Management Console has encountered a problem and needs to close’ appeared.

I have reinserted ‘Hypertext Markup Language component (.htc) files to the registry from Microsoft’s Help.

I would just reload my system and be done with it but I am a couple thousand miles from home and my computer only allows me to make one copy of Recovery Disks. I have a legal copy of Windows and Microsoft updates it automatically.

My computer is a HP Pavilion DV8210us with XP home SP3. It has 512MB RAM and 80GB hard drive. I use Windows Defender and PC Tools AnitVirus which are used often.
Do you have Windows CD with you?No. It is at my home. I am a couple thousand miles away for the next few months.Try to uninstall SP3, and see, if it helps.Uninstalled SP3. Popup is still blank.

However before uninstall, I noticed text in Outlook Express cannot be selected and INTERNET Explorer opens but doesn't work. 'Firefox' and 'Opera' work fine.

Later: Microsoft Works won't START (cannot access files needed to run). Reinstalled 'Works' and it still has the same error.

Is there a text generator(?) or program that is common to these Microsoft programs that could have been removed from the Registry?I SUSPECT some serious system file corruption. Can you borrow Windows CD from someone?

Also...
Download HijackThis:
http://www.trendsecure.com/portal/en-US/tools/security_tools/hijackthis/download
Click on Download HijackThis Installer
Post HijackTHis log.OK. Dowloaded and ran HijackThis. The log is attached.

Everyone I know here has Windows Vista, but I'll see if anyone knows anyone who has an XP disk.

I was kind of HOPING it was something that was missing and could be added to the registry. Oh, well.

[Saving space - attachment deleted by admin]I see nothing dangerous there.
Try looking for that XP CD.I can purchase 'Windows XP Boot Disks' on EBay. Will they do the trick? The funny part is a few months ago I gave the Goodwill several computers with Windows XP and their Recovery Disks. One had XP Professional Boot Disks with it.You have to have Windows CD, not boot disks.XP bootdisks by the way are free...but they will not re-install XP...Can't find Windows CD from the few people I know in this small community. Plenty of Installation Disks for specific computers and one Windows XP Pro Installation Disk with the key.

The Boot Disk I was referring to, is supposed to install Windows XP (he says).

I guess the simplest thing to do is reinstall Windows and retain the other files on my computer. Is there any way I can use the Windows Update files I have on my computeryou could try running a chkdsk /r command from the run line..... if thats no good, i would try to get hold of a xp disc and do a repair via the installation... after pressing f8 i think Quote

XP bootdisks by the way are free...but they will not re-install XP...

Solve : Cannot open Regional and Language Settings nor it's displayed.?

Answer»

I got a problem with my Regional and Language Settings. It's not shown on the Control Panel list. I even tried using a software called TWEAKUI to make it appear in the control panel, and it STILL didn't work. I also tried running intl.cpl (exe for regional and language settings) and nothing poped up. Ran a VIRUS scan. no infection detected. Some help woulb be appreciated. :\ try a malware scan and SEE what pops up.  Spybot WORKS good in safe mode or set it to run at boot in the options menulike i said, i ran a scan already. my av also scans for spyware/malware.Go Start>Run ("Start Search" in Vista), type in:
sfc /scannow
Click OK (hit Enter in Vista).
Have Windows CD/DVD handy.
If System File Checker (sfc) will find any errors, it'll ask you for the CD.
If sfc won't find any errors in Windows XP, it'll simply quit, without any message.

Solve : Vista Upgrade due to Computer Upgrade?

Answer»

I am planning to do a major renovation with my computer.
I'll be doing these changes:
Quote

VIA motherboard to ASUS P5Q-PRO
2 DDR 512MB RAM to 2 DDR2 1024MB RAM
Intel P4 2.4Ghz to Intel Core Duo 3.0Ghz
AGP Graphic Card to PCI-E

added on with an extra fan and a change in Power Supply.

Because of the XP (Professional) OEM license restriction, I will have to purchase a Vista ULTIMATE Upgrade.
I need to know when is the right time to do the upgrade. Should I do it before or after the hardware upgrade?
Because I heard that in order for the upgrade to work, I have to have a working and activated operating system before.

So after I do an hardware upgrade, should I reinstall XP anyways and GET the reactivation notification and then upgrade Vista, or just upgrade to Vista right ahead?
Or should I just upgrade now and reactivate again after the hardware upgrade.

I will back up my important files, but please don't ask me wipe out the XP partition and do a clean install. It would take too much of my time to recover the programs I wanted.

All your help is appreciated. I thank you in advance!I would do the upgrade, see if xp needs reactivation or not and then add vista, if I did it your way.

it is best to have your personal files off the computer on an external drive at all times.  I would suggest a clean install of vista on a new drive and dual boot option be in place, think about it...the xp just as it is with no risk of upgrade and vista all clean and ready to rock without a ton of old xp system files LEFT BEHIND to slow it down and tons of extra drive space.

upgrade versions do clean installs just keep the xp DISC handy because vista will ask for it for a few sec's.

Check to see if you did not turn off the WLAN adapter with a switch on your laptop. (Refer to your MANUAL if you are not SURE where this switch may be if it is there at all)

See if the Wireless Zero configuration-service is enabled under START -> Run -> services.msc if you connect to a wireless network USING the Windows configuration menu.

Solve : Adobe Flash Player, latest version?

Answer»

Hi, as I am follower of gas turbine/jet engine technology, I LIKE to view the many demonstration videos that the manufacturers have on their products, describing their operation etc.  Recently, found that a lot of the product videos required that I had to have the above Flash Player installed, (they worked before so maybe I accidentally deleted something),  however, after much trials, I finally MANAGED to get the product to reinstall.  The interactive contents of the above demonstrations now RUN but the video content is poor with juddering of the video and stuttering style speech content.

My system is Windows Vista Home PREMIUM edition on an Acer Aspire 5610Z Laptop with 2GB ram i wonder what browser you are using (firefox, internet explorer .... etc) and provide a link of what you are looking at that's having problems?

Anyhow, for now I would try out uninstalling the adobe flash player completely, then booting to safe mode and reinstalling ?Also the SPEED of your internet connection will affect playback qulity as well.
And the servers feeding you the video as well...what sites ? ?

Solve : Windows vista and strange memory card problem.?

Answer»

hey back again with ANOTHER problem

I have a regular SD card for a camera and one day i decided to stick it in an MP3 player and connect it to my COMPUTER to download the files, like i always do. anyways when i went to explore the drive, windows told me that it needed to be formatted. I viewed the properties of the card and capacity was all messed, so i thought formatting it was the only solution, turns out windows couldn't format it and now the card doesn't work at all and lags any computer i stick it in. and now today my external hard drive had the same problem only i wasn't going to try formatting. i plugged it into my laptop and it ran just fine. is this a RANDOM windows vista error? and how do i fix my camera card now?

Vista is fully updated and camera was working just fine in camera until vista killed it. i don't have the slightest clue as where to start this time. So, you have previously used that SD card in both camera and MP3 player, and downloaded and/or uploaded files between both those devices and the computer without problems, right?

Does the camera have it's own formatting capability?  If so, I'd try that. Ya my external hard drive has worked just fine before too. The Hard Drive works perfectly in my laptop. however the card doesn't work at all anymore. not even recognized by any device except my camera. camera has the ability to format but it says the card is unusable. Laptop has a card reader so it rules out the mp3 player being bad.
-Hard drive operates extremely slowly on desktop. tried checking for errors and it got stuck. The seagate go external hard drive MAKES beeping   noises when connected to my desktop. usually this means lack of power. but this is a new computer and it worked before. no beeping noises on the laptop. I've tried all my other devices such as: PSP, Tom tom,  cell phone, and mp3 players. they work just fine. my vista installation is pretty new. i might just reinstall it as a last call.
- tried SCANNING for bad sectors and errors. the scan froze on my new computer but seems to be scanning just fine on my laptop

laptop: vista not updated
new desktop: vista updated

sorry for any confusionIt sounds like the MP3 player was underpowered and or hiccuped during the transfer...
Whatever errors took place may be making the card unreadable at this point.
Since the errors happened while the card was in the player i would try the following steps :
First try formatting it in the player.
Next try the same in the camera itself.
Finally try the above in the laptop.

If this does not work DLoad install and try Recuva ( FREE ) on it...not so much to retrieve the data but to try and get it back to where you can at least format it and use it...

Last ditch effort try to format it in a dedicated card reader.
Good Luck.

Solve : PnPDriver not found?

Answer»

Toshiba satellite L30-11D/ Vista Basic

My neice has a Laptop that when you now put in a USB sticks detects a new device but ASKS for  driver to be loaded. It asks to go to the internet to find one and ends up with the following message.

Problem signature
Problem Event Name: PnPDriverNotFound
Architecture: x86
PCI\VEN_STICK_DETAILS
OS Version: 6.0.6000.2.0.0.256.1
Locale ID: 2057

It had been previously auto detecting USB sticks and running them. The USB ports work with a USB mouse automatically though so they are working and the Toshiba hardware diagnostics confirm this.

The sticks have been tested in another computer and are fine.

I cannot download a Vista driver for these USB sticks as there are none for them.

I have tried a Vista restore to several weeks back before this problem occured but this doeasn't do it.

Any ideas guys.
Try to uninstall USB controllers. Restart computer, and they'll be reinstalled automatically.I'll give that a SHOT and LET you know. Thanks. Also check and see if these sticks have U3 installed...if so format them after retrieving the data...i have been having the same problem i hook the printer or mp3 player and put install cd in and it tells me to hook printer in and it is hooked up computer says they are working fine but CANT get to work

Solve : Vista 64 Windows Can't start up?

Answer»

I recently installed prince of persia the two thrones on my cyberpower vista 64 bit PC.

When I tried to run it,  a game window pops up trying to recognize my computer and its minimum requirements needed to run prince of persia. It did not recognize my quad core 9850 processor. Even so, I tried RUNNING the game and the computer unfortunately crashes.

When I tried to reboot my computer, it would say an error has occured and do I want to start windows normally, safe mode, etc.

I tried all of the methods but every and everyone of them TAKES me back to the "start windows normally, safe mode, etc" place.

The hint thing on it tells me to insert windows vista disc and try repairing the computer.

I inserted the disc and restarted the computer, but it does not repair, but asks if I want to enter Windows EM2 when i booted from the disc drive. I entered it and it loaded for a while and asked for the product key. Unfortunately, I have both xp and vista discs, but lost the product key for both of them.

Any ways to fix without repairing or formatting? If not, how do I get my product key(s) back?

Thank You. The computer is only 3 month old and my DAD is gonna be pissed at me if I spend more money on it ;-;if windows is running ok, then there is a program on the internet that RETRIEVES the cd key...its called a key finder program....search google for ithttp://magicaljellybean.com/keyfinder/Are there any Windows stickers on the PC? I have a PORTABLE hardisk and i locked some of my private files so only my computer could use it (they turn green).

some time later i formatet my pc...

so when i was trying to move/open my files that i had lock, it just said acess denied.

I have a windows vista

The key to the 'lock' was on the hard drive on your PC and you have wiped that clean. That is why you get no access.

As to how you fix this, I have no idea

Actually, maybe this can help http://www.irongeek.com/i.php?page=security/thumbscrew-software-usb-write-blockerHow were they locked ? ?
If you happened to use a third party utility then it will have to be re-installed on the new drive before you can do anything with those files...
If however you do not have the password you are out of luck altogether. Quote from: Albot on November 15, 2008, 03:06:13 AM

they turn green

They were encrypted using the windows Encrypting File System FEATURE of NTFS.

Since the encryption routine uses the users SID (a GUID generated when the users account is created), as well as the SIDs of those users they have designated as recovery AGENTS to encrypt files, and you've reformatted, you no LONGER have those SIDs. the only way to get the files decrypting again would be to have had a recovery agent, which I'm quite sure you did not, or, the ability to set your SID as well as find out your PREVIOUS SID.

Solve : Uninstall security?

My mom just got a new PC and i've spent the past few days updating everything on it. (was never connected to the net...until now). Anyways, I just went through a WORLD of MESS installing Vista SP1 on own PC. My problems were with my Virus and Spyware protection. I had to completely uninstall both, just to update my PC to SP1. After doing so, my Virus protection program has had a couple of problems. I've already installed the same software on her PC, and I just got the SP1 "available update". Perfect timing huh? I was just wondering if anyone knew of a way to install the update without the possible mess I had previously. Thanks.

Lol. Shows how much i pay attn. Sorry patio. I dont know why i thought i didnt know how to disable it. I've done it many times. I guess my real problem was disabling them in the startup program list. Then I remembered msconfig. So basically I asked for help on an issue I already knew the answer to. Thanks though patio. No problem...
But i would advise in future not using msconfig when starting/stopping/revising any services as it can lead to bootup issues and other problems because it wasn't really designed for this task...and it sometimes has issues remembering changes you may have made which makes diagnosing a real pain...
Instead run services.msc from the command PROMPT. It's cleaner and the issues i mentioned usually don't surface.
Good to hear you're fixed up.

Solve : Windows Vista Premium Themes?

Solve : Vista problem I think:?

Answer»

I have a new laptop. Came with Vista Home Premium.
I attempted to install XP Pro and failed.
I installed Vista Business successfully. Is running GOOD.
I moved all of my stuff from the old machine (XP Pro) to the new machine.
Today, I had my external drive connected which I used to do all the TRANSFERS. Normally I use it for extra storage space.
I ran Ccleaner to empty the recycle bin and I noticed it was deleting files that I know are not in there.
The files appeared to be coming from "  E:\Recycle Bin\$RHQHFKS\... etc.
When I unplug the drive, the CC goes back to only working on the Recycle Bin in C drive as it should.
When I plug the external drive in and check it"s contents, the folders I saw CC deleting are not there.
I restart CC and it begins where it left off  E:.....

I did a Google search and the attempted XP install and the E drive/CCleaner thing seem to be related.
Any THOUGHTS?What exactly do you want to accomplish here with this machine ? ?I want to know how or why Ccleaner was deleting files from my external hard drive when it was supposed to be clearing the recycle bin.
JimThe external drive HAS a recycle bin, which is evidenced by the name "RECYCLE BIN" for the folder on your E: drive. The ext drive is a WD Passport 320 gb. When I open it it's labeled as E Passport.
When it was new and I opened it there were no folders, no nothing. The only ones that show up are the ones I put there.
If it has it's own recycle bin. How do I access it to see what's in it?
Also I found that I had the CC set to secure file delete 3 passes. I unchecked that and the CC quit showing the E Recycle Bin. Where is it?
  JimOK
Maybe I won't get the answer to the above. I moving on. Learning Vista.
I noticed that when I try to "move" files. It makes a copy in the move to place and I still have a copy in the original place that I have to delete.
In XP I could just move stuff. Am I missing SOMETHING?

Solve : Slow Vista - High CPU & Memory Usage?

Answer»

Friend's computer:  Sony VIAO VGN-TZ150N, w/ Vista Business, 1 GB memory.

Vista runs ridiculously (and unacceptably) like molasses.  I know Vista is slow by itself (which is why I use XP) but this is slower than normal.

I've tried the following:
1.  Disabling almost all unnecessary start-up programs.
2.  Cleaning/defragmenting HD, including the prefetch folder.
3.  Checking virtual memory settings.
4.  Disabling many of the "fancy" visual effects and the Aero display settings.
5.  Installing updates from the Sony VAIO page.

Still, the CPU & Memory usage under the Task Manager are running between 40 - 70% even when no applications are running and the processes tab shows nothing running above 2-3%.

Any ideas on what could be taking up those CPU cycles and occupying all that memory?  Is it just Vista by itself?  Services?

Thanks.  Any suggestions would be appreciated.Let's make sure that computer is clean...

A complete erase, reformat, reinstall of computer didn't work.

Computer was ultimately sent back to Sony.  It has so many problems that it's impossible to know what caused what.

Very disappointing that Sony's store (in Tysons Corner Mall, VA) provided so LITTLE help.

In summary, the computer itself probably had a long list of problems (both hardware and software).  Thanks for posting back.
Are they gonna replace it?
