Solve : Windows update in limited user mode?

Answer»

That's interesting patio.
Do you know how it is SETUP to do that?Broni,
I can now confirm that the IE windows update does definitely NOT include any updates that are ready to be installed on the computer via automatic updates.

On my second machine, in admin mode, the yellow balloon SHOWED in the system tray after all. I clicked on it and selected the custom install. It showed a security update for IE6. I then launched IE and went to the windows update page and allowed IE to find the needed updates. The only update shown is a windows genuine advantage update - NO security update for IE6!
I know. On my Vista, SOMETIMES, it takes a few hours for the computer to be up on "PATCH Tuesday", for it to let me know, there are some updates.
I often CHECK, and install them, before anything pops-up.Frank
Once you check for updates one way, they won't show up, if you try another way. Thanks broni for all your help.
I'll keep searching the internet for setting up the notification in limited user mode. As Patio has said it works on his computer, so there must be a way.
Good luck, and keep us posted

Solve : How do I delete headings on e-mail that I want to fotrward?

Solve : vista partition?

local  disc c:is 19.5 gb full having a space of 3.37 gb  local disc d: 29.2gb free having a  total space of 36.3 gb. i want to free local disc c: by 10 gb and send the files to disc d: since my computer has BECOME very slow and i constantly need to delete information to CREATE room for new information. pls come to my rescue! Ctrl + X

Ctrl + V

Boom.  Copy done.
Just select the files you want to move, and drag or CTRL+X/CTRL+V them to where you want them.

Seriously, that's all you have to do to copy from one drive to another.

*edit*
I should say that you should only move files that YOU created, as programs and your Operating System will probably freak out if you move their files around.
*edit*

You might try running disk cleanup (Right click on the drive, click properties, click disk cleanup, check every box, click okay).

Also, if you have SP1, you're happy with it, and you have some basic knowledge of the Windows command prompt try this:
Open a command prompt with Administrator PRIVILEGES (Flag key > type "cmd" > HIT CTRL + SHIFT + Enter)
In the command prompt, type "vsp1cln" and hit Enter.
A prompt should ask you if you really want to delete the files (y/n) if you type "y" you will never get those files back.  They're old pre-SP1 files, so not a big deal.  Might net you a gig or more.

If you're still not happy, go back into disk cleanup and click the "more options" tab.
Under "System Restore and Shadow Copies" click "Clean Up..."
This will delete all but your most recent system restore point and all shadow copies you might have laying around.

Here's another one that might net you space, might not.
Open up a command prompt with admin rights again.
Type "powercfg -h off" and hit enter.
that turned hibernation off.  If you use hibernation, I wouldn't recommend doing this.  However, if you don't, this should free up as MUCH HDD space as you have of RAM.

hope this helps.

Solve : 2 Versions of Windows?

Answer»

I purchased my PC with XP on it and just recently upgraded to Vista. I obviously was rushing through the installation process since I now still have both versions on my pc. (Before it starts up, it prompts me to choose which version to run.) Since then my system has been running ridiculously slow (duuuh   )...

Is there an EASY way to remove either version WITHOUT messing anything up? or should I leave this to a pro?

I'd actually like to get rid of the Vista and keep XP...Where was Vista installed to ? ?
Did you CREATE a NEW partition for it ? ?
If so you can delete the Vista install on that partition and then post your boot.ini file here as it will need EDITING to tell it that Vista is no longer there.

Solve : Repartition without losing data (Please read, more complicated than it sounds)?

Answer»

Well, here's my problem:

Here's my CURRENT HDD setup:

HDD0: Partition1 = System, Partition2 = Applications & MyDocuments, Partition3 = More Applications
HDD1: Personal Data
HDD2: DVD Rips

0 is 320GB
1 is 750GB
2 is 1TB

Back when I first got Vista, I only had the one 320GB HDD in my computer.  It worked fine, and I was happy.  However, I wanted to keep my system separate from my data and programs, so that if need be I could wipe the OS and start over without too much hassle.

That said, I didn't do a very good job, so some of my programs are installed in the boot partition and the REST are installed in their own partition.

As you can probably see, after the addition of a larger HDD, I moved my personal stuff to it and let it's old partition become more app space.

Well, now I'm planning on getting a 10,000RPM HDD and another 1TB HDD and I'd like to rearrange the data again.

Here's what I'd like the new setup to look like:

HDD0: Software
HDD1: Personal Data
HDD2: DVD Rips
HDD3: DVD or Video Edit Data
HDD4: System Boot Drive

Where:
HDD0 is my 320GB
HDD1 is my 750GB
HDD2 is my 1TB
HDD3 is my 2nd 1TB
HDD4 is my 10k RPM 300GB

So after all that explaining, here is my problem:

How can I remove the two partitions that are currently on my system drive and separate the OPERATING System onto a different HDD without royally morphing the system into not knowing where ANYTHING is?

I'd like to be able to keep my currently installed software, as there's a lot of it and it's a complete pain in the *censored* to get everything back to status quo.  However, I do understand that it would just be easier to move my personal data off, wipe the drive and start from scratch...but that's just nowhere near as fun.

Also, what are anyone's OPINIONS on running software from the boot drive vs. from a separate drive, and is there a noticeable improvement for software (like editing, gaming, etc.) when they RUN on 10k RPM drives VERSUS 7200RPM?

Thanks!

Solve : my comp says my password is invalid and wont move off of welcome screen?

Answer»

I was wondering if someone could help me out.  I have a COMPAC Presario w/vista and I turned it on this morning and typed in my password as usual and it said that that was invalid.  I don't think I have a password RESET disk that it asked for, and I really need my computer to work.  The only THING different that I did was update my Norton yesterday, but the comp restarted itself and worked fine all day yesterday.  So, now I'm stuck at school using this computer to ask this question.caps lock on? ALSO- ensure a book or other item isn't somehow holding one of the SHIFT keys down.

failing both of those- try another keyboard. This is all under the assumption that your pwd is CORRECT.

spider slow down here- what makes you think it's a root kit? That's an ATI driver file...yeah i followed instructions and posted the logs on spyware forum.

anti malware bytes shows it as a rootkit but anything else brings up nothing. any suggestion wot i should do with it being on an ati driver fileSorry- I wasn't AWARE that it had showed up anywhere.

do you have an ATI graphics CARD? If so, you could try re-installing the drivers, which hopefully
will overwrite your rootkit.

On the other hand, you're be much safer just following the instructions given by one of the malware experts.

You're in safe hands, I assure you. they know what they're doing.as far as i can see i have a sis not a ati graphics card well then! That file most definitely does not belong on your system!

Do not worry- just whatever you do- don't bump your thread in the malware forum- the specialists attend to older posts first.

Solve : Can't get wireless working Vista Business?

Answer»

I just bought a new laptop that came with Vista Home Premium. I INSTALLED Vista BUSINESS and went to the Toshiba website and downloaded all the drivers they had for the Qosmio X305-Q703.
Now when I TRY to connect to wireless network I get this:

      Windows cannot find any networks
There is a diagnose option. That gets me:

This computer does not have a wireless network adapter installed and configured.
Install wireless networking hardware and verify the correct drivers are loaded.

In the device manager it lists  Realtek RTL8168C(P) Family PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet NIC  (NDIS 6.0)

I assume that is the network adapter. When I double click on it, there is a window that has device status.
That says:  This device is working properly
  Any ideas?
  Thanks Jim Nevermind,
 I got it!
Thanks for being here though. You have bailed me out many times before.
JimTry to reinstall driver: http://www.radarsync.com/driver/d275761-realtek_rtl8168c_p_8111c_p_pci_e_gigabit_ethernet_nicDid you see the above? It started working.
Should I install that driver anyway?
The problem was that I just didn't set up the network connection!
JimSorry. I didn't see your reply, when I posted  Broni,
Thanks again for all the support.
I'm curious. I bought that laptop with Vista Home Premium on it. I really don't like Vista and I use it at work. I tried to install XP PRO but it would not install. It said something about it not being compatible and that the XP was older than the Vista. So I gave up and installed Vista Business.
The machine has a Intel 2 core duo 64 bit processor. If the XP Pro is 32 bit, would that have anything to do with it not installing? I wouldn't think so. The Vista Business I installed is 32 bit also, and it works.No...the 32 bit is not making the install go awry...Vista is.
If you really want to do this procedure we can walk you through it.
Start by collecting XP drivers for every component on that machine and POST back. I had to leave the office today and work in the field. Our IT guy got my computer and put the things on it that I need for work so  guess I'm going to leave the Vista on it and learn to work with it. (go along to get along so to speak!)
Thanks again for the input. At least I know now that if I really need to I can go back to XP in the future.
JimWhen you'll get used to Vista, you'll like it.

Solve : Vista IE freezing?

Answer»

Just the past week, I've had to use the three-finger salute  a half dozen times as IE freezes. Haven't had a problem before, changed nothing in the last week. Any ideas? What antivirus protection do you have?

What VERSION of Vista do you have?

How much RAM and free HARD drive space do you have?

One step to TROUBLESHOOT so far without any information:
Click Start, and type: Internet explorer no add ons
Run that version of Internet Explorer. Does it work fine without crashing?
If so, then you are most likely having issues with addons.

Close Internet Explorer without Add Ons, and open the regular Internet Explorer.
Press the ALT key if the Menubar isnt already up. Then Tools> Manage Addons> "Enable or Disable Addons"

Disable anything you dont recognize or that you dont think you need. Things that you should usually keep:
Windows Live Signin (If you use Hotmail or other MSN services)
Shockwave Flash Object, Shockwave, or Adobe Air... or anything like Adobe
Adobe Reader
Java TM
Silverlight

If there is anything in there with a non-English (or non-whatever-your-primary-language-is, as well as non-English) and anything that looks like random numbers letters and characters put together.

Avira AntiVir Personal.
Vista Home Premium
3GB Ram
Acer Aspire M5630
Intel Core2 Duo CPU
32 Bit
HD 228 GB Free Space 161 GB

I disabled some things like Yahoo and Google tool bars, along with some HP printer items (I don't even know what they are for).

Thanks for your help.Does Avira handle spyware and adware?

Also, is it updated, and have you run a scan on your entire drive recently?

Edit:
I suppose I should mention, viewing your running addons would help in the process of stopping adware & viruses from interfering with Internet Explorer, however, some are sneaky, and may not appear on the list, and things like popups and other whatnot may not even be operating directly inside the browser. Avira is a free antivir program. It runs a check a number of times a day. I also have Defender doing it's thing once a day. What kind of antivir do you reccommend for Vista?

Shockwave, Adobe, Sun Java Console, and ACER eData Security are the only add-ons running. I appreciate your help. I am contemplating a downgrade to XP, but only because of things like this. I want to start doing web pages and can't afford constant garbage like this.  I noticed my computer is only using a Service Pack 1.  Are there any upgrades you'd reccomend?Try this:

1. Launch the Internet Explorer window.
2. Select Tools > Internet Options.
3. On the Internet Options pop-up window select the " ADVANCED" tab.
4. Uncheck "Enable third party browser extension".
5. Check the option "Disable Script Debugging(Internet Explorer)" and Uncheck "Display a notification about every script error check "
6. Click  on OK. Close and open Internet Explorer.

Press and hold Windows Key on keyboard and press R. It will open Run Window. Type the following in the open box and click OK

iexplore.exe –extoff

Issue will be solved

Solve : Delete Dir ProgramData\Spybot - Search & Destroy?

Bob
Wethersfield, Ct.Have you tried re-installing Spybot and then un-installing it with their UNINSTALLER ? ?
The directory is probably not empty if it won't delete...Hi. I uninstalled using SPYBOT and there are 127 password protected files in that directory messing up my backups. Thanks for responding.try booting into safemode and delete it from there...are you on the Admin account ? ?I'll try that but it seems like syntax is the problem. Can you give me the command syntax:
Is this right:deltree c:\ProgramData\Spybot - Search & Destroydeltree command doesn't exist in NT based Windows.
It was replaced by rd command.
If folder is not empty, you have to use /s switch.
In your case:
rd c:\ProgramData\Spybot - Search & Destroy /s

If the above doesn't work, use Unlocker: http://ccollomb.free.fr/unlocker/If the directory name has spaces, you will need to use quotes:

rd "c:\ProgramData\Spybot - Search & Destroy" /s

Thanks, Sidewinder Thanks so much Sidewinder. It worked. Have a great Holiday.

Solve : extension .eml?

Answer»

Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 2 (build 2600)
DELL Inc. Dimension 4700, IE7.
Processor a 3.20 gigahertz Intel Pentium 416-KILOBYTE primary memory cache1024 kilobyte secondary memory cache.
DRIVES: 160.03 Gigabytes Usable Hard Drive Capacity
152.59 Gigabytes Hard Drive Free Space

Sometimes I get as forwards with the extension .eml, for example, Puppeteer Extraordinarie.eml (5049KB)

When I download that, which takes me to Outlook Express (which I do not as yet have SET up in my computer.  In the Outlook Express Attach area is the Puppeteer Extraordinarie (3.69-MB).   When I click on that I takes me to:        Do I want to Open This File?   I open it and it opens in Windows Media Player where I wanted it to open in he first place.  So do not understand about the .eml extension.

Does that mean someone is sending it from Outlook Express?   I have a bunch of friends on OE that send me forwards but they usually have the file extension  .pps, .wm, .wmv.

I was just looking through a Special folder in my email where I keep really neat forwards and send them out again at some time.   Some I have had since early 2007, for example, this one; Surfing.eml (2190KB) (only it did not have that extension when I first received it) When I click on the .eml it takes me to Outlook Express where in the Attach: it shows Dog-Surf.wmv (1.60 MB) and if I click on that it opens in Windows Media Player, as it should.

I am wondering why the extension would change from the original .wmv to the .eml.

  Anyone know?  Thanks much.
I have found some info you might be interested in at

http://www.fileinfo.net/extension/eml

it may or may not help but its a start..eml is the file extension for an email message saved as such in OE or Windows (Vista) Mail.  Since OE is the software installed on computer that reads that type, i.e. .eml, of file, OE is going to be launched to open that type of file.  I suspect what's happening is that people who use OE and send mail to you sometimes forward something they've received from someone which contains a  .pps, .wm, .wmv, etc. files as an attachment to the original message.

The only way you can avoid the intervention of OE in this situation is to ask the senders to send you that  .pps, .wm, .wmv, file as an original attachment to the message they send to you.  You could be making a nuisance of yourself by making such REQUESTS, so I'd use discretion here.  I think I'd just accept that these files will have to opened in OE before you can get to the actual attachment you want to open.Hmmm. I didn’t see a Reply button, only a quote button.     Thanks much.   I made a shortcut to my desktop and will look at it tomorrow.

I did this, by using the Backup and Restore Centre
and after reformatting my computer, everything was like when i just brought it, and i tried to restore it through the Backup and Restor Centre.
However, it tells me that there were no previous back ups.
All my BACKED up files are in zip files or something, in my D: drive. i can see it, and there's a lot. but the Restore Files thing can't get it! what do i do? i really need my files.

if someone can help me i will be so so GRATEFUL, i am in the middle of YEAR 12 exams, and really need my files.Exactly how did you format and how are you trying to recover Windows?

Solve : Memory missing (ignore and delete)?

Answer»

Edit: turns out that clicking 'clean disc' cleared up about 20 GB, most of which is vista restore files. Somehow I'm not surprised... everyone always said Vista eats up memory...
------

This is a problem that may not actually be a problem... just something I'm CONFUSED about.

My laptop is divided into 4 drives. The largest of these, C drive, is 53.7 GB. It features the main operating system etc, as well as the user accounts. Currently there is 3.45 GB left, so naturally I want to clear up some SPACE, plus the thing as a whole is getting a bit cluttered. I decided the best thing to do was to see where most of the memory was being used, so checked on FOLDER sizes, getting something like that below;
Windows: 15 GB
Users: 5.23 GB
Program Files: 15.3 GB
All other folders: 195.83 KB (so 0.19 something GB I think. This figure includes the 'hidden' folders as well (like Program Data), or at least as far as I can tell)

Now, I like to think I can add up well, and to me it looks like I am missing about 20 GB of memory somewhere in the C drive. I've had the laptop for about a year now, and have noticed it slowly filling up (though am fairly sure I never had 20 GB free). I use McAfee security software, and as far as I can tell it is all up to date (virus scans etc never find anything) but to me it looks suspicous.

Does anyone have any ideas? I WOULD appreciate any guidance as to where to free up memory space, and if any extra INFO is needed would be happy to provide it, providing I can be told where to look for it.

Thanks in advance,

Avaris

Solve : Moving Windows Installation?

Answer»

i WANT to move my Windows Vista HOME premium installation to a larger HDD. I have tried this in the past using partition software to try and clone the HDD but it didnt work.

if i were to run Ubuntu off a CD and then copy the whole HDD to the new destination, would i bee able to just change the boot priority from the BIOS and run it with no problems or are there extra steps.

please note, NO other hardware will be changedCopying will not work...
The easiest solution for this is to use the new HDD manuf. utilities CD ( ships with the drive) to "clone the old drive to the new drive.
Hook up the new drive as a slave.
Boot to the HDD utility and select the "clone" option
Power down.
Remove the old drive and hook up the new drive as master.
Boot up and you're done.thanks, ill try that
i tired cloning with other programs but it CREATED a partition that was the same size as the original drive but i couldnt expand it to fill the whole drive
im assuming that's what is going to happenDone!
i realised that the reason i couldnt extend the partition was because the HDD had bad SECTORS! i downloaded a free prgram that fixed them then extended the partition... problem solved!

just a quick afternote, is there any problem with deleting the old installation?
im assuming NONE of the old files are being usedi tried to format the HDD but it said that some programs were using it.
how can i find out which programs are using the HDD so i can modify them to use the new one?

Turn off computer. Disconnect router, and modem from power source for 30 seconds.
Power them back on.
Restart computer.

If that doesn't work, bypass router, and connect computer straight to the modem.

If that doesn't work...
Go Start>Run, type in:
cmd
Click OK.

In Command Prompt window, type in following commands, and HIT Enter after each one:
ipconfig /flushdns
ipconfig /registerdns
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew

Restart computer.

If that doesn't work...
Download, install, and run LSP-Fix: http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm
Restart computer, and see, if it helped.
If not...
Download, install, and run WinSockFix: http://www.softpedia.com/get/Tweak/Network-Tweak/WinSockFix.shtml
Restart computer, and check again.

I found these directions on this forum and was wondering if anyone can tell me if it would work for Windows XP - our computer will connect to the internet but most of the time within 10 -15 minutes we get disconnected and may or may not get it to reconnect right away. Quote

Solve : Windows Doesn't Start... At All?

Answer»

I really need some help and I have no idea what to do.

I have a DELL Inspiron 1420 with Windows Vista. It sort of froze up when I was browsing a web page, so I shut it down by pressing and HOLDING the power button. It continued to slow up the next few times, so I continued to shut it down this way, which I know was probably very stupid. I think I SERIOUSLY messed up all of my start-up files. My computer was running CHKDSK but it froze up during it. Now, when I boot up it will go through the DELL screen and then I see a black screen with a little BLINKING white bar at the top (the one where text is inputted)...

I would really appreciate any help. I'm totally clueless.Did you try Safe Mode?
Do you have Vista DVD?When I try to go into Safe Mode, it just bleeps and bleeps no matter how much I try (by pressing F8). I do have the Windows Vista DVD.Try this: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial148.htmlI've done all that, and the computer still won't start. >.< Am I gonna have to reinstall? I mean, I'll get over it... it'll be a pain... but I'll deal with it.

I had a system restore file logged, but it says that I don't, which is stupid.

In the future, is there a way for me to back up all my stuff to a disc, if this happens again? Quote

I've done all that, and the computer still won't start
Are you booting from Vista DVD?Yes... Oh god, and I just made it completely WORSE. I reinstalled, but now it can't even connect to the internet. I f***ed things up royally. I'm so confused and sad. Should I have reinstalled it to be in the OS partition... I don't even know what a partition is! Oh god... What EXACTLY did you do??I'm lost.
First, you say, computer can't start.
Next, somehow, Windows got reinstalled, already.
We need to know what you're doing, if we're to help you.

You need to reinstall motherboard drivers to make some of your computer components work.

Solve : New to Boards - Need help?

Answer»

It says "Windows cannot find "C:\users\TEMP" Quote from: Berti2.0 on December 06, 2008, 11:00:46 PM

Okay so I did that and it says it can't open it. I've tried it lots of times and its just not opening.

EXACT
ERROR message, please?"Windows cannot find "C:\users\TEMP". Make sure you typed the name correctly and then try again"OUCH!  I'm wondering if the temporary profile got deleted.

Do a search one more time for what you were looking for.  If anything shows up, right-click on it, then left-click "Open file location."  Proceed to copy your schtuff back. Okay I tried that and this is what im getting:

"C:\Users\TEMP\Music\Soulseek - Power refers to a location that is unavailable. It could be on a hard drive on this computer, or on a network. Check to make sure that the DISK is properly inserted, or that you are connected to the internet or your network, and then try again. If it still cannot be located, the information might have been moved to a different location."wait a second; could the found files be shortcuts I wonder...Why not do a simple search for the files extension ? ?

*.wma or *.mp3 or whichever they are ? ?

Problem is you will have to be VERY patient as they load if there are 10,000 of them...
Again at this point you need to start considering a backup strategy and some file management ideas.Patio, I just did that and when I clicked on a song to see if it would play, nothing happened. This sucks! Sounds like they really are just shortcuts...So what does that mean? Have I lost my files? You just might have.

Do this, though:

1) Click "Organize" in the upper left hand corner, then "Folder and Search Options."
2) Click the "View" tab.
3) Uncheck the check box called "HIDE file extensions for known file types."
4) Click Apply, then OK.

Do your search again.  Do ALL of the results have .lnk at the end of the name?

If so, then they're all just shortcuts and I'm afraid you may have lost your files...time to consider using an undeleter program at that point (ASSUMING they haven't been OVERWRITTEN a few bazillion times...)

If not, then copy ONLY the ones without .lnk at the end of it to your new profile.

where is this?If you have already formatted the computer and clean installed the Windows Vista on the computer, the issue could be caused by the compatibility between Windows Vista and your hardware; you'd better contact your device manufacturer for more information. It could be only a driver problem and be solved easy doing some updates.

No, I don't know. I don't have any system CD's of any kind.Download, and install Everest: http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4181.html
Open it, click Computer, then Summary.
In upper menu, go Report>Quick Report-Summary
Save it in text FILE, and paste it in your next post.
Don't include anything under line Debug - PCI Ok so after I downloaded the file from nodevice.com, I did an add hardware search and the computer seem to have found hopefully the right driver, and it found the compaq monitor that I'm using. Things seem to be back in order display-wise.

The .dll problem though still exists on the two users, I'll fiddle around with that as soon as I calm down a bit and get some other STUFF done. Also a little scared on restarting.

Its urgent COS i wanna work with it.Thank u 4 helping me.If i remember correctly Autocad2007 requires 2 or 3 re-boots in the installation process...and they all show a prompt.
The first time you restarted the opening prompt should have REQUESTED the AC CD...
Is this what happened ? ?I wasn't dat observant to decode if it requestd for such promptings but whenever i click on the desktop autocad icon it opens a page that says.... Autocad application has stopped working and it also said a problem caused the program to stop working correctly. So what do i do to get it corrected? What OS are you running ? ?

Solve : Some buttons on laptop keyboard have stopped working...?

No problem.

I am starting to believe there MAY be SOMETHING stuck under the keys themselves.

However, one more thing to try; Hold down the FN key while pressing those keys and see if you get anything.hey! i think we should LEAVE this for now as i dont think this is that serious  and we are using the usb keyboard for the time being so i think we should just close this topic for now. thanks for your time so far! All right then.

If you're happy, I'm happy. I have a vey simila poblem.

As you can see, my "r" key on my laptop running Vista doesn't work. This is not due to the keyboard however, since Shift+R works. I get around this problem TWO ways: copying an "r" and just pasting it in everytime I need it, or putting CAPS Lock on,  holding shift, and pressing "r". This leads me to believe that this is not a hardware issue.

I have tried updating my keyboard driver, with no results. Any IDEAS?Start a new topic with more information.

Solve : Need disk D cleaned?

Answer»

I am  running Windows Vista on an E Machines.  I need to clean disk D as I have a lot of systems restore on it .  I have 2.07 GB free out of 8,36 GB on disk D.  When I go to all programs and get "disk clean up" and "drive selection D" I click on "OK".  This brings up a panel which has "more options" which I click on.  A panel comes up which tells me I can delete all but the last restore point.  I click on "clean up" but nothing HAPPENS.  It does not clean disk D.  Can anybody offer suggestions?  ThanksIf they the space is used by system restore you could always shut it off and reboot and than turn it back on. That should flush out all the old restores.

I am a senior who doesn't know much about computers.  How do  I turn off the system restore.  I know how to reboot but after that how do I turn on the system restore?  ThanksTry to look this over....

It isn't very hard to do. I would also suggest USING less of your hard drive to do the system restore. To change that you will see a slide bar below the system restore check box.

Spoiler:
I am running Vista and your suggestions were for Windows XP.  I was afraid to try your suggestions because I was afraid I would mess something up.  E Machines gave me a program which cleaned disk D.  It did not get rid of all the system restart but it did get me a lot of free space in disk D which is what I wanted,  Thanks

Amazing! And here I was thinking it was merely coincidence!Exactly what is on D Drive? How do you know they're system restore points?I don't know what is on disk D.  I though the system restore points were there but APPARENTLY not.  When I used CCleaner it cleared about 4 GB but I still have my system restore points.  The reason I wanted to get rid of my system restore points was to get more free space.  When I ran CCleaner I got the space I wanted so I did not go any farther trying to get rid of my system restore points.I wouldn't get rid of your system restore points. They're there just in case something happens to your computer and you need to restore its settings.

You can turn it off or change how much space it uses if you Right Click My Computer and go to Properties.

Solve : Unable To Make Radio Connection?

I am having difficulty to make a radio connection that I used to be able to get without difficulty.
The station's url is    http://www.y101.fm/

On the upper right area you should click on "LISTEN Live"  This takes you to a short commercial following which a new screen is presented.

On this screen in the upper right a somewhat large BOX is shown which should be clickable and take you to the streaming MUSIC.    In my CASE inside the box all I get is a small square with a small red square, blue triangle and blue dot.

It is non clickable.

Can you suggest why I might be having this problem.  I assume its somewhere in my setup but I've been unable to figure it out.   I'm running VISTA Home Basic on an HP 530 laptop.

Solve : Question Reguarding Slow Boot Up?

Answer»

Hi,
I have an HP desktop (a6142n) I GOT it about a year ago. RECENTLY I updated my Macfee anti virus (it expired) after I did that my computer has had a few issues they are as follows.

1) When I shut down my computer correctly or restart it when it first turns on and you get the the first HP Blue screen where you can press f10 and stuff like that. (sorry not sure what its called) ANYWAYS it takes like 5 mins for it to load once it does this and vista starts up I have no problems. This has never happened before  any ideas

2) my external hard drive its called mybook or something its got the initials WD on it. Is not being  recognized by my computer I have unplugged if for a while and plugged it back in but nothing is happening.

I think these are from when I installed MacFee antivrius on my computer from ComCast. Ideas?HELLO, try doing a check disc. Go to C:\, right click on property>tools>check disc. Select both options and restart, after restart. Once again to C:\ right click on property>tools>defrag. This is a simple troubleshooting STEP, but sometime it works. Let us know the out come.

Solve : How can I get computer to stop continually booting up, so I can troubleshoot??

Answer»

This computer continues to boot up and whether I try to pick "Start Normally" or any of the safe modes it continues to cycle through and never stop. At some point before the big windows XP pops up on the screen, a screen with a blue background and some writing pops up, but it is so quick, you can't make out a single word or hit whatever key it is to stop it there. So I obviously cannot GET any further to troubleshoot this computer, I can only imagine what I'm going to find. Hope this makes sense.
Your are hitting a GPF, I would boot the system off of its OS CD or DVD and use Windows REPAIR utility. If you dont have a disk you can " ahem borrow " ONE from a FRIEND to repair your OS whether it is 2000, XP or Vista.

Boot off the CD and then you will see an option to REPAIR windows.when you boot up can you GO into safe mode by pressing f8? I would try to reinstall windows. It's your software or motherboard. On the advanced start-up screen (safe modes) choose: "Disable Automatic Restarts on System FAILURE". Write down the error message and post back with it.

click to show system restore and choose the restore point.
If you have started your computer several times since the problem it may be showing you a restore point date which will not take you back past the problem.
you need to choose a date which takes you to the nearist time BEFORE your computer 1st had the problem.

then go to control panel /VIEW updates and make a note (write down the numbers and type of updates before removing) then remove the updates which were reported as downloading/installing at the time.

then go back to the MS site and I found the Vista windows auto update normally just replaces the removed updates.
however I have also had to FIX one update by manually clicking on it and it downloaded on its own.

No worries Ella. We encourage other users opinions.

However, your solution will only work if you can boot into Windows.
Slimanus cannot get into Windows.

Hopefully Last Known Configuration will get his computer working though.sorry i got into safe mode when i thought it froze on the update screen.  i tryed GETTING to it that way again and there is no option for last known settings.  just boot normal, safe mode, safe mode with networking, safemode with dos?? i think that was it none of them bring me to anything different.  thanksSo you got into Safe Mode successfully?no i choose safe mode and it goes back to the update screen. thanks

Solve : error at start up?

Answer»

I have a Dell Desktop, with Vista Home BASIC OS.  When I turn the compter on, it opens a black screen, saying Search diskette o failed. Press F1 to continuo or F12 to set up.

When I press F1 there is a blinking line for about 30 secs. And when Windows boots up, I get a message that the Floppy Disk driver was installed succesfully. I do not have al Flopy Disk hardware.

Does anybody know why this is happening? I tried system restore But the same THING is going on.
Thanks in advance.Check BIOS to see if Floppy is enabled and disable so it wont look for it on boot.

Not sure the F-key for Dells BIOS if you already know the key then you should be all set..... if you dont know the key to get in such as it doesnt advertise it at the boot splash screen then try pressing F12 repeatedly at boot of system to see if you can get into BIOS or ESC key, or F10, or DELETE key until the BIOS interface displays options.

Hiya,

Me and my boyfriend got a HP PC LAST week from a friend of ours. It runs on XP i THINK although it has a vista screensaver!!!

On Sunday night my partner decided to turn the computer off without shutting it down properly, when we tried to log on yesterday it won't work, i've tried everything - it comes up with a black screen with start safe mode etc but none of these work, i've tried to find something on the set-up as well but nothing seems to be working!

Any help you could offer would be much appreciated! What exactly happened?

How did he turn it off?He SWITCHED it off at the plug!!!  hi frnd....
when you try to boot in safe mode, it will take some TIME to show the desktop screen. Meanwhile it does'nt show any thing. So , if you did'nt do this, try to wait for few minutes while booting in safe mode.

Solve : Dual boot...?

Answer»

Ok, so dumb question, but I wanted other's opinions.  I just got WINDOWS Vista, and am about to dual boot it with XP.  XP is already installed on one hard drive, and I would like to install Vista on a SECOND one.  The second hard drive is already formatted 100% NTFS.  Should I start installing Vista while in XP, or should I insert the disk, then RESTART and jump dircetly to the disk in BIOS?Here's the short answer...
If you want the boot option from Windows to choose which OS to boot to you install it with the XP HDD still connected...Vista will detect it and ask where you want to install it to.
You can choose the other drive or any existing NTFS partition.

Advantages: When you boot you will have a choice in the Windows boot screen which one you want.
Disadvantages: Vista will need to write certain files to the root of your XP install changing it so that it works. However if you use a disk image program for backups such as Ghost or Acronis the image files need to be wrestled with should the XP install need to be restored.

Method #2:
Temporarily unplug the XP drive and do a clean install of Vista to the other drive.
Advantage:
Imaging and BACKING up will keep both OS's virgin and independent of each other making the whole job easier.
Disadvantages: You need to enter Setup upon boot to choose what OS you want to boot to. ( takes an extra 10 seconds)

I prefer Setup#2 and have been dual-(multi) booting for awhile ...
Any further questions we'll be here.

Important NOTE: Whichever method you choose both OS's will have no problems seeing/transferring files between the 2.
Some Applications because they are stubborn will have to be installed under each OS however i have good luck with most of the apps i use daily running on both OS's even though they MAY be only installed under one OS.
Disclaimer: If this is Vista 64bit all bets are off as i don't have another 20 minutes of typing time left right now....

NOTE #2 I forgot to mention the advantage of having them installed on different drives...HDD's fail.
If one dies the other is still functional.

Solve : Desktop CD used as an external ??

Answer»

Can I use the CD drive in my Desktop COMPUTER as an external drive to load programs on my laptop computer?  If so, how??? or can you REFER me to PRINTED INSTRUCTIONS??  Depends on laptops age and OS... If your laptop is Windows 98 SE * or newer with USB ports you can use a IDE to USB cable to plug your CD Rom into the USB port of the laptop, but you will also need a power source for the drive. It would be easier to not use that drive from the desktop but to buy a new external CD Rom drive for around $40 or so.

* Windows 98 has very limited USB drive interface support.

All newer OS should mount without a problem.

*** If you need to use this drive at boot to install a clean install of OS your BIOS will have to be new enough to support booting via USB.I've had success with enclosures designed for hard drives; main problem is it's not really that neat; I had to disassemble the enclosure and use it while it was open. Not a long term or portable solution. Thanks for the prompt reply... The OS on the laptop is Windows XP Home... the OS on the desktop is Windows Vista Home Premium.....
I will take your advice and JTS get an inexpensive external CD drive....  Thanks again...

Solve : Chronic Crashing?

Answer»

Hey Guys,

I have a problem with my computer where about every hour it will crash, and reboot after giving me the blue screen. Just before it crashes, the fan speed will increase dramatically for about 5-6 seconds. Im pretty it is not something where I will have to buy anything new, as I have had this problem in the past, and fixed it at one point. Unfortunately I can not remember how. I am not quite sure if it is a Vista problem but i'm posting it here just in case. If you need any information, feel free to ask.

                             Thanks in Advance!

1. Please, post some computer info:
- processor type, amount of RAM (hold Windows key, hit Pause/Break key)
- HARD drive size/free space (open "My Computer", right click on hard drive letter, click "Properties")

2. Download, and install SpeedFan: http://www.almico.com/sfdownload.php
Post your computer temperatures:

Provide processor info (hold Windows key, and hit Pause/Break key to find out).

3. What does BSOD say?Processor- Intel Core2 Quad Core 2.4 Ghz
3 gigs RAM
301GB free of 455GB hard drive

 Anything else?

Ill download speedfan and post results when i get them, thanks!
Let's see what SpeedFan will show.
What about my QUESTION #3?Sorry to sound completely ignorant but what is BSOD?
Quote

giving me the blue screen
BSOD = Blue Screen Of Deathoh, it says a lot but it only flashes up for about 3 seconds, any way I can look at it longer?comp just crashed again, DONT know is SpeedFan did anything Quote
any way I can look at it longer?
1. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.

2. Click the Advanced tab (Vista: click Advanced system settings).

3. Under Startup and Recovery, click Settings to open the Startup and Recovery dialog box.

4. Clear the Automatically restart check box, and click OK the necessary number of times.

5. Restart your computer for the settings to take effect.

SpeedFan doesn't fix anything. We want to see what your computer temps are. Here is speedFan, sorry I couldnt get a better pic.

Oh wow, you cant even read that

[Saving space - attachment deleted by admin]Everything hovers from around 30-45COK, Im really sorry about that, BSOD has nothing to do with it, its only because my internet reciever thing is incompatable with vista Quote
Everything hovers from around 30-45C
Keep using the computer, and watch those temps. See, if they go up with the time passing.
Your processor max temp is listed at 62.2C

Solve : Long-winded question, sorry!?

Answer»

Hello

A friend of mine has a Windows (Vista) laptop which does not go beyond the set up page, that is, the page which shows Press to enter BIOS setup, etc.

I am unsure if she has loaded programmes which have changed her settings.

On this setup page she can also access that page (I think by pressing F12)which asks how you want to start Windows: Safe Mode, LAST Known Configuration, an MS-DOS alternative, or Normally.

I have tried Safe Mode with a view to removing any programmes from Control Panel | Add/Remove Programmes, but when I select the Safe Mode option I redirected back to the setup page. The same happens if I choose the start Windows Normally option.

Am I right in saying that as we cannot access Windows or any of its tools (such as System Restore) we need to rely on external files, namely those on the installation CD? I imagine the good files on the CD would then overwrite any O/S files causing these problems.

However, as the laptop cannot see the CD and I can't access My COMPUTER in order to select it, do I have  to change the BIOS boot order so that it SEES the CD before anything else?

If I am on the right lines so far, how would I change the BIOS boot order? At the moment I see a menu with a few items across the screen, such as Advanced, Boot, Exit, etc. Do I use the left<<< and right >>> arrows to access these different menu items, and what then? Is CD one of the options under one of these heading?

And even presuming I do all this, which TOOL do I select on the installation CD?

Many thanks.

SteveEvery BIOS is little BIT different, but in your case, look under Boot.
On every page, there are instructions in right pane, what to do to move entries around.
Make sure CD/DVD drive is listed first.
What CD/DVD do you have? Vista DVD?Hello Broni

Thanks for your reply.

I think she has a Vista CD (mabe 'solutions centre', but will check). What if CD-DVD is not listed under the various options?

Cheers

Solve : [SOLVED] Cannot Boot in Safe Mode and various other problems?

Answer»

Information:

  • DELL Dimension 8400
  • Windows XP Home Edition; Service Pack 3
  • Intel Pentium 4 Processor
  • [Do not have RAM or Hard Drive Info on hand]
  • Security Software: AVG, SpyBot S&D, CCleaner

I'm typing this from my laptop since I can no longer properly use my PC until resolve. I cannot describe my problem in one or several sentences but here are the major events to happen on my computer in the past 2 days:

1. Ran a windows sysinternals SID generator and changed to a custom SID for windowblinds software.
2. Computer rebooted and proceeded to administrator's desktop, but no taskbar or icons appeared nor could I right click with the mouse to bring up options. I could however use the task manager to open programs, browse the internet, etc.
3. Used system restore to 'reroll' to the day before.
4. Taskbar and icons are back, but now denied access to 'My Documents' folder on the hard drive due to permission settings somehow being relocated on an NTFS volume.
5. Rebooted in safe mode, and gained ADMINISTRATIVE ownership of 'My Documents' folder---followed these instructions
6. Rebooted in normal mode and still denied access and at some point ran PC in 'Last good configuration.'
7. Received this message when attempt to log-on on what is now factory default log-on screen: "Windows cannot load the user's profile but has logged you on with the default profile for the system."
8. Reboot in normal mode, but access still denied, and cannot click 'all programs' on start bar, access still denied to 'My Documents, but can use task manager to open what few programs that aren't located in 'My Documents,' and browse the internet.
9. Reboot in safe mode but mouse and keyboard become inactive at factory default log-on screen---every time.
10. Continue to do 8 and 9 in hopes of something changing but same results.

If more system information or any other recollection of events are needed, I will try my best to provide.

Cheers
!

By the way: as I am logged in on windows default profile a message saying something along the lines of 'Cannot find desktop'... user profile is located in 'my documents' which I am denied access to.I don't see one click solution here, since we may have several issues here, or at least we have to eliminate some possibilities.
I can't be sure, how operable your computer is, so let me know, if you have any problems with performing tasks listed below.

1. The log looks clean malware-wise, but I can see some McAfee leftovers (O2 entries). Run McAfee Consumer Product Removal Tool: http://majorgeeks.com/McAfee_Consumer_Product_Removal_Tool_d5420.html

2. Not critical now, but...
You need to update Java:
http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp
Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 10
Uninstall all previous versions of Java through Add\Remove.
Do it only, if you can.

3. Go Start>Run (Start Search in Vista), type in:
msconfig
Click OK (hit Enter in Vista).

Click on Startup tab.
Click Disable all

Click Services tab.
Put checkmark in Hide all Microsoft services
Click Disable all.

Click OK.
Restart computer in Normal Mode.

See, if it changes anything.

The faulty user profile will not let me download anything from the internet so I created another account and downloaded both software and moved startup files to shared folder. Logged back onto the faulty user profile and could not run either startup files. I also followed the rest of your instructions, but just as expected, nothing happened.

I believe this is what we must first focus on in order to fix the underlying problems.
1. Gain access and ownership to main user profile---'David'---which is located in 'documents and settings' on harddrive which was modified as NTFS volume.
2. Run safemode without it failing.Yeah, your old profile may be corrupt.
Operate from new profile, and try to move your data from old profile to new one: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/811151I've already tried that. When I tried to PASTE old profile into new one, I was still denied access. Also, I can't select files excluding Old_profile extensions .dat, .dat.log, and .ini because I can't get into it in the first place----access denied. What about trying same thing from Safe Mode?
I'm aware of:

If so, can you try PS/2 stuff?

Solve : Tips on multi HD's and OS's?

Answer»

Here is my plan...

I soon will have a 500 gig SATA 2 drive and existing 2-40 gig IDE's

System is a Dell 400sc Server, 4 gig of ram

I plan to partition the 500 gig into 2- 250gig's  and I want to put Vista Upgrade CLEAN install on one partition and XP on the other.

on the one 40 gig I plan to put Ubuntu on the other maybe Linux server just for kicks.

I am looking for tips on doing this type of install?

First some tips on the best way to partition the new 500 gig Maxtor and anything else your experience may help me complete this task.

I'm sure I would do just fine on my own but I wanted to see if anyone has a vast experience in this and may possibly have a better way then I would go about it.

Thanks for you time and effort in advance.

I just found this post elsewhere and its some great info about the upgrade clean install...

As many of you are now finding out, in order to upgrade your copy of XP to Vista, you need to have XP currently installed on the computer and the setup program must be run from withing XP. No longer can you boot off of the setup DVD and just insert the MEDIA of older versions that you are upgrading from. What this means is that there is no true way of doing a clean install from a formatted hard drive as when you enter the Vista product key it will tell you the setup must be run from within the previous operating system. Another issue that occurs is that you will invalidate the XP product key that you are upgrading from.

Paul Thurott has discovered from internal Microsoft documents another method that you can use to perform a full install. To do this follow the steps below:

   1. Boot your computer form the Windows Vista Upgrade DVD. When you get to the setup screen, START a new setup of Vista.

   2. When prompted to enter your product key, Do not enter it. Instead click on the Next button and continue with the setup. This will install Vista as a 30-day trial.

   3. When prompted select the edition of Vista which you had purchased. So if you purchase Home Premium, select Home Premium. This is important, so do not pick a version that you did not purchase as it will affect later steps.

   4. Once the setup has completed and you are back at your new Vista desktop, run the setup program from the Vista DVD again from within the new Vista 30-day trial.

   5. Go through the setup, but this time when it asks for your product key, enter in the product key that came with your upgrade.

   6. When asked whether to perform an Upgrade or a Custom (advanced) install, choose the Custom (advanced) option to perform a clean install of Vista. Yes, you are performing a second installation of Vista.

   7. Once setup has completed for the second time you will be able to activate Windows Vista as normal. You are now left with a fresh clean install of Vista and your original Vista install has been renamed C:\Windows.old. You can now delete the Windows.old FOLDER as it is not necessary to be on your computer.

Why does this work? It works because Microsoft let the Vista 30-day trial act as a valid upgrade path for Vista and because you can install the trial to a empty drive. This keeps the process as clean as possible for those who do not own a Full install version of Vista.

Now all I need to do is get past the partition limitation...I'm hoping Vista will do it without any problems..[/font] I hope this Bios is worthy of 250 gig partitions.

I checked that the numbers were identical (I have very limited experience) and decided it was OK to install.
On installation all sorts of problems. Small desktop icons. Application Icons shrunk. Etc. etc. etc

I did a system restore and all is back to normal.

Question, any IDEA what made it go off its nut……and will it have a deleterious effect on my computer not downloading it. Seems to operate all right without it. Just CURIOUS.

Thanks

Small desktop icons. Application Icons shrunk.
Maybe screen resolution got changed.
See, what resolution you have now. Install new driver, and see, if resolution is set to the same value after driver installation.
